Today you will explore another city in the surroundings of Madrid in an 8-hour full-day tour. Just 50 minutes outside Madrid there is the medieval capital of Spain: Toledo, which should not be missed. Although it is now a place for tourists to come and see, five hundred years ago it was the bustling city center of Spain for centuries.

Toledo1

Given the honor of a World Heritage city, Toledo is as important as any other place in Spain and equally beautiful. The old city walls border Toledo and its winding, stone roads and picturesque buildings.

Toledo has been populated for thousands of years by almost every major empire to conquer what is now central Europe. Because of this, there are remains of each dynasty sprinkled throughout the city. When you are in this city you are truly in the middle of history.

The city is famous for being the main place of co-existence for Jews, Christians, and Muslims from seven hundred A.D. until fourteen hundred A.D. Many different religious monuments and buildings stood next to one another and people were free to practice whatever religion they wanted to. During the 16th Century, it was home to the Spanish monarchy and was the capital city.

The first thing you see when entering Toledo is the Puerta Bisagra, the main entrance to the fortified city. When you pass through this gate you are passing through fifteen hundred years of history!

Alcazar

Alcazar is a spectacular castle, but was once a fortress and because of that has been rebuilt numerous times due to conflict and fires. There are many old cathedrals, mosques, synagogues, and monasteries all over the city. Other highlights include an assortment of interesting museums, a walk along the river Tajo, and if you are lucky some amazing Fiestas.

After this excursion, the bus will drive you back to the hotel and you can enjoy your free time during the rest of the day. Of course, there are also some options, which can be added if you wish:

1. Visit to Santiago Bernabeu Stadium

Santiago Bernabeu Stadium

Real Madrid is famous for being the richest football club in Spain. Estadio Santiago Bernabeu Stadium is the home to Real Madrid and has been since 1947. It is one of the largest football stadiums in the world holding over eighty-five thousand people at one time.

2. Visit to the Prado Museum

There is no better place in the world to see Spanish art than the Museo del Prado. It is the largest and most well-known art museum in Spain, which was originally built in the 1700s in the Neo-Classical style. Some of the paintings found here date back over nine hundred years ago and are still on display today.

Prado Museum 2

The Prado is considered one of the most impressive art galleries and museums in the world, ranked seventh in Europe, and is the most visited gallery in Europe besides those in London and Paris.

In the evening you can enjoy your free time and explore Madrid on your own. You can use it to do some shopping in the famous street Gran Via, take a delicious cocktail in an insider bar, or walk along the streets – just enjoy the charm of this city.

After the refreshment at the buffet breakfast on your Madrid and Barcelona 6 days and 5 nights journey, the day unfolds with a half-day trip (5 hours) to the incredible city surrounding Madrid: Segovia, renowned for its Alcazar and captivating medieval charm.

The excursion, a significant part of your Madrid and Barcelona 6 days and 5 nights experience, kickstarts with a tour to Segovia, one of the nine prominent towns constituting the state of Castile and Leon. Earning the honor of being named a UNESCO World Heritage City in 1985, Segovia boasts two particularly breathtaking landmarks.

Segovia

Firstly, there’s the Aqueduct. Dating back to approximately 100 A.D., this masterpiece of Roman engineering stands as a testament to ancient architectural prowess. As an integral part of the Madrid and Barcelona 6-days 5-nights itinerary, the Aqueduct, with its 818-meter span and over twenty-five thousand granite blocks, offers a picturesque view from various city corners, though it predominantly graces the Plaza del Azoguejo.

Secondly, the Madrid and Barcelona 6-days 5-nights adventure introduces travelers to the Segovia Cathedral, Spain’s last gothic masterpiece. Towering over the city with its 90-meter high bell tower, this over four-century-old marvel was once Spain’s tallest structure, further amplifying the charm of Segovia.

While these architectural wonders are the highlights of the Madrid and Barcelona Barcelona 6-days 5-nights tour, Segovia’s offerings don’t end there. The Alcazar, a millennia-old royal palace, accompanied by its stunning gardens, adds to the city’s allure. Museums, arches, churches, and numerous other attractions ensure that this part of the Madrid and Barcelona Barcelona 6-days 5-nights journey remains etched in memory.

After soaking in Segovia’s magnificence, the bus escorts you back to your hotel, allowing for some relaxation before your onward journey. As a continuation of your Madrid and Barcelona 6 days and 5 nights experience, the afternoon sees you boarding a flight or high-speed train bound for Barcelona. Upon reaching this coastal gem, a private shuttle transfers you to your 3* Hotel.

The concluding part of this segment of your Madrid and Barcelona 6-days 5-nights adventure invites you to explore Barcelona at your own pace. Savor tapas, stroll through the historic old town, or simply unwind, gearing up for the adventures of the coming days.

The day begins with a buffet breakfast in your hotel. Afterward, our guide and bus will pick you up for a full-day excursion to the highlights of Barcelona.

Barcelona 6-days 5-nights

The awe-inspiring architecture of Antoni Gaudi will be our starting point. Admire the UNESCO heritage buildings of Casa Mila and Casa Batllo in the picturesque Eixample quarter before we approach Barcelona’s most famous landmark, the cathedral of Sagrada Familia: this still unfinished gem of modernism architecture was begun in 1882 and the completion is planned for 2026, the 100th anniversary of the death of Antoní Gaudí.

We will continue to the upper city and the slopes of the Sierra de Collserola mountain range to reach Parc Güell. Your guide will take you for a short walk through this fairy-tale garden with its beautiful mosaics and amazing views up to the Mediterranean Sea.

Sierra De Collserola Mountain

Take a short break on its terrace for a picture of the famous curved benches.

After this refreshing break, we will continue with the bus to the Olympic facilities on Montjuic. This mountain between the historic center and the port has already been part of sports history for decades as Barcelona’s old Formula 1 track. For the 1992 Olympic Games, it was reformed as the central venue and 80% of the competitions took place over there. We will visit the beautiful plaza and the Olympic stadium before reaching the castle on the top of the mountain with its 360-degree views of Barcelona and its shoreline.

Making our way down from Montjuic our next stop will be the ancient heart of Barcelona. Step deep into history and explore the foundations of Barcelona as a Roman colony 2000 years ago. Our guide will tell you the rise and fall of the ruling empires over the centuries on a walking tour from the world-famous Las Ramblas through the narrow lanes of the Gothic quarter. On the way to Barcelona’s greatest medieval icon, the cathedral of La Seu you will also explore the indoors of the Roman Augustus’ Temple, the palatine chapel of Santa Àgata, and the cloister of the cathedral.

Cathedral Of La Seu Spain

Now you will hop on your bus again to pass the old port and the former fishermen’s district of Barceloneta to reach the lively beach promenade. We will then enter modern Barcelona with the Olympic Port and the futuristic Forum area. On our way back to the hotel the tour will finish with the oddly shaped Torre Agbar, the icon of modern Barcelona in the new business district.

Side Of Torre Glories Agbar Tower 1

After this extensive tour get some rest in the hotel or take a look at Barcelona’s extensive shopping opportunities along fashionable Passeig de Gracia or discover hidden boutiques in the Born district.

Start into the day with another great breakfast. Today you will go on a trip to Girona and Figueres in northern Catalonia.

It will be a one-hour drive from Barcelona to the historic city of Girona. Founded by the Romans, it was a melting pot of cultures for centuries. Along winding medieval streets our guide will take you up the hill from the riverbank to the cathedral. On the way down we will pass through the narrow lanes of the Jewish quarter, walk along the Roman wall that surrounds the old town, and discover the Arab baths.

Afterward, you will have some spare time for shopping, a coffee break or just wandering around the picturesque old town on your own.

Another half an hour on the bus and we will reach Figueres, the home and workplace of world-famous surrealist, painter, and sculptor Salvador Dali.

Theatre Museum Of Dali 1

We will get in touch with his fascinating world and visit the Theatre Museum of Dali. Almost completely created by Dalí himself, it is undoubtedly the best and largest collection of surrealism in the world. He wanted visitors to see his massive collection as a whole work, and for this reason, he refused to have his works placed in any order. Step in and get lost in this surrealistic world of fantasy mixed with architecture, paintings, and sculptures.

After this exciting day, the bus will bring you back to the hotel around 18.00 hrs.

In the evening you will enjoy a delicious farewell dinner in a Spanish restaurant. The dinner will include a three-course meal, wine water, and coffee.

According to the departure of your cruise ship, we will pick you up from the hotel and bring you to your cruise terminal. With a lot of impressions, you will be hopefully already thinking about when you will return to our beautiful city. Optional: If your cruise check-in will only open late in the afternoon, we can add another half-day tour in Barcelona.

Optionally, we are happy to include the following activities in your program:

  • The inside of Sagrada Familia with VIP-Entrance : Explore Gaudi’s masterpiece with your guide and no queuing – 19€ per person

Welcome to Spain

When you travel to Spain with Tauck, you'll feel the passion of this sun-blessed country come to life in every destination visited – a fiesta where everyone seems to be invited.

Madrid, spain, art, history and so much more in spain's extraordinary capital city, madrid.

Founded more that a millennium ago as a Muslim fortress town, Spain's capital city, Madrid, is a cosmopolitan metropolis known for its incredible art collections, inventive cuisine, and lively nightlife. Visiting the city with Tauck, you'll discover grand avenues such as Gran Via and Castellana, and El Parque del Buen Retiro; walk with a local guide through Plaza Mayor and the Mercado de San Miguel; enjoy a guided visit to the Royal Palace (Palacio de Oriente); and tour one of the greatest museums of them all – the Museo del Prado, which opened its doors in 1819, created by King Ferdinand VII to promote Spanish art and display the Royal Collection. Today, the Prado is home to one of the finest collections of European art anywhere, including works by Goya, Velázquez, El Greco, Bosch, Rubens, Titian and others… and with Tauck, you'll explore it all with an art expert.

Cordoba, Spain

Explore the moorish influences and multicultural heritage of córdoba.

It may have begun life as a Roman settlement, but the Spanish city of Córdoba – in the southern province of Andalucia – first reached greatness as a Muslim stronghold and the capital of a Caliphate, and many of its Moorish influences remain to the day. Reclaimed by the Christian world during the 13th-century Spanish Reconquista, Cordoba has long been known as a multicultural melting pot and a center of Spanish intellectual life. Discover it with Tauck on a walking tour through its Jewish Quarter and a guided visit to the 8th-century Mezquita de Córdoba (La Mezquita) – once one of the world's largest mosques, and now a Roman Catholic cathedral. More than 1,200 years old, it's an iconic symbol of the city and its multicultural heritage.

El Palace Barcelona

A 20th-century classic reborn for the 21st.

Nearly a century after it opened in the heart of Barcelona near Las Ramblas – and soon became one of Spain's leading luxury hotels – the El Palace Barcelona emerges from an ambitious and comprehensive refurbishment designed to recapture the classic style and splendor of its greatest years. The hotel's public areas, presidential suites and standard rooms have been carefully restored with handmade carpets, restored antiques and exact replicas of objects such as lamps and curtains... and on the 7th floor, the romantic new Diana Garden sports more than fifty species of plants, fountains, pergolas and a pool, all inspired by the Barcelona of the 1920s.

Pintxos tasting tours

Sampling pintxos in bilbao and san sebastián.

Pintxos – the traditional tasty treats typically enjoyed as appetizers or snacks in bars throughout northern Spain and the Basque country – are so named for the "spike" (a skewer or a toothpick) that holds their ingredients to a slice of bread, and distinguishes them from their tapas cousins. You'll have opportunities to sample some of the best pintxos in town on tasting tours with local experts in Bilbao and San Sebastián.

"Traveling with Tauck was an incredible experience that truly exceeded our expectations. The hotels, food, wine, tour director and local guides were all terrific and we loved all the places we visited. You were right – San Sebastían was definitely a highlight of the trip! We were very fortunate to have sunny, comfortable weather and we really enjoyed meeting the people in our group and spending time with them. I felt so pampered and indulged and hope to go on another Tauck trip sometime in the near future. • In order to enter Spain, U.S. and Canadian citizens need a valid passport with an expiration date extending at least six months beyond the date of reentry.
  • We recommend having at least one blank passport page for entry stamps.
  • Beginning in 2025, U.S. and Canadian passport holders must register for an ETIAS travel authorization in order to enter many European countries.
  • Passport holders from over 60 visa-exempt countries (including the U.S. and Canada) will need to apply for an ETIAS travel authorization in order to visit 30 European countries. That means that even if you’ve previously traveled to any of these European countries without a visa, starting in 2025, you’ll need to get ETIAS authorization to visit them again. If you’re traveling to multiple countries with this requirement, you only need to complete the form once. All Go Ahead travelers are responsible for obtaining their own ETIAS travel authorization before departure. For more details, please visit our Help Center .
  • If you are not a U.S. or Canadian citizen, you must contact your destination country’s consulate for your specific entry requirements.
  • You can see the most up-to-date entry requirements for the destination(s) you’ll visit on tour by going to goaheadtours.com/entry-requirements and searching the code SMB.

  • In Spain, breakfast like a local with just a pastry and coffee. Then, tuck into a three-course lunch featuring a Spanish staple like savory seafood paella or grilled meat and fried potatoes. Dinner is less hearty than lunch and is served late, between 9pm and midnight. Snack on small plates called tapas any time of day.
  • Catalan cuisine, which can be found in Barcelona, is markedly different from food in other parts of Spain. Nearly every restaurant will offer pa amb tomàquet —toasted bread with tomato and olive oil. Fresh seafood, hearty meat dishes, cheeses, and locally grown vegetables, such as wild mushrooms, are culinary mainstays.
  • Cuisine in Spain's southern Andalusia region is heavily influenced by surrounding countries, and has many Arabic elements. Kebabs are popular, and desserts are often prepared with almonds, honey and cinnamon. Be sure to try Serrano ham, which is considered a regional delicacy, as well as the famous chilled soup known as gazpacho .
  • Spain operates on the European standard 220-240 volts and uses Types C, E, or F plugs with two small, round pins.
  • We recommend packing a universal adapter, as well as a voltage converter if you plan on using your own hairdryer or other device without a built-in converter.
  • The strength of the air conditioning in European hotels is often not as strong or as cool as what you might be used to in the U.S. or Canada. When air conditioning is available, it is usually regulated seasonally and controlled centrally by the hotel.
  • Your hotels may provide hairdryers, irons, and other small appliances. However, these amenities cannot be guaranteed.
  • Wi-Fi is available in most hotels, though some charges may apply.
  • There is no Wi-Fi on any of the motor coaches.

  • When it’s noon in New York, it’s 6pm on tour.
  • You will use the euro on this tour.
  • Better rates of exchange are usually available overseas, although it’s worth ordering some currency from your local bank to use when you first arrive.
  • We strongly advise that you take debit/bank cards and credit cards, which can be used to withdraw cash at local banks as needed.
  • You can use most debit/credit cards at ATMs on the international networks Cirrus and Plus, but make sure to check with your home bank about withdrawal fees.
  • Inform your bank and credit card company of your travel plans so that they won’t confuse your international purchases for fraudulent charges.
  • International banks and businesses primarily accept debit and credit cards that work with the EMV chip system. If you do not already have at least one debit or credit card with a chip in it, we strongly recommend requesting one from your bank prior to your tour.
  • At the conclusion of your tour, it’s customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity in local currency. Please keep current exchange rates in mind.
  • We recommend tipping the equivalent of $10USD to $12USD per person per day for your Tour Director and the equivalent of $3USD per person per day for your driver.
  • If applicable, we also recommend the equivalent of $2USD per local guide.
  • Tips can only be paid in cash.
  • Most optional excursions will be available for purchase while you are on tour.
  • Your Tour Director will only accept cash (in USD only), Visa, or MasterCard as payment for excursions.

Customizable Itinerary

Barcelona - arrive in vibrant barcelona.

Barcelona will show its vibrant culture and colorful architecture when your flight lands at El Prat Airport. Your private transfer will meet you at customs and escort you to your luxurious accommodation in the heart of the city. The remainder of the day will be at your leisure to enjoy the remarkable ambiance of the Mediterranean city. The Sagrada Familia Basilica adorns the skyline with spires reaching 566 feet tall. The historical atmosphere of the Gothic Quarter will combine the stunning architecture of the medieval past with the contemporary sounds of lively cafes.

What's Included:

Barcelona - Follow Gaudi’s Legacy

Your guide will meet you at the hotel after breakfast eager to lead you on a private tour of Barcelona’s legacy. Construction on the Sagrada Familia Basilica began in the 1880s, and the 18 spindly towers dominate the surrounding structures. Lavish sculptures on the facade shift between the themes that have been dedicated to representations of the Passion. The interior will possess a central tower adorned with stalactites. You will continue to La Boqueria market, where the aromas of fresh local cuisine like potato croquettes and bread with seasoned garlic and tomato sauce fill the air.

Barcelona - Discover the Gothic Quarter and Picasso

The majestic ambiance of the city will offer you alluring beauty as you explore the Gothic Quarter with your guide. The unique neighborhood retains secrets that date back centuries and that have been scattered along the cobblestone streets and preserved archways. The 14th-century Santa Agata Chapel was built over a former Roman town wall and acted as the chapel to the Royal Palace. You can visit the Picasso Museum, which is hidden on an atmospheric street occupied by medieval palaces. The 15th-century Gothic architecture juxtaposes the extensive collection of paintings and drawings that make up Picasso’s early work. The collection includes the enormous work, Science and Charity.

The Alhambra is an imposing figure that towers above the antique heart of Granada at 2,066 feet above sea level. The dreamy hilltop setting dates back to the 13th century and embodies a masterwork of Moorish art and architecture. The preserved ambiance of Toledo stems from the dazzling array of synagogues, mosques, palaces, and churches behind the defensive walls. Cobblestone streets lead to hidden shops where aristas continue to model traditional crafts, from metalworking swords to shaping the almond-scented air with handmade marzipan. Colored ceramic tiles pave the streets of the Jewish quarter beneath graceful windows and inorwork balustrades.

Madrid - Depart for Home

For my first tour. I really enjoyed the tour. Ofelia was our tour guide and she was with us the whole time if we needed anything. It was nice having someone there with us. We really enjoyed the places that were in the itinerary and the overall experience. I would highly recommend this tour. I felt the hotels at each location were good. I would recommend doing the flamenco shows. Con: The only thing that could have been better was the food, but all the activities and accommodations were great, which made up for it.

Before I arrived on this tour I thought my highlights would be Barcelona and San Sebastian but honestly, I enjoyed every moment of the holiday! The food and drink in this region is excellent and relatively cheap compared to the UK. You don't spend much time on the tour at the start in Barcelona or at the end in Madrid so I would recommend booking at least an extra night pre/post tour to be able to both great cities. Pamplona has a nice historical old town with some nice walks. San Sebastian is just the place to go to for foodies but is also a nice place in its own right! Logrono is the capital of the La Rioja region so you know you'll get to taste some good wine. I will definitely be coming back to this region! For the tour overall, I felt that we didn't really need 2 nights in Logrono and could have done with either an extra night in San Sebastian to visit Bilbao or a night in Bilbao itself. And that's taking into account the included evening tour of Logrono and the winery tour activities. Beware the 4hr + coach journey from Logrono to Madrid. Our tour leader, Maria Christina did a great job considering that she had to take over at short notice. She organised all our public transport and organised the optional meals, selecting some very decent restaurants. I definitely think she made the trip more enjoyable! I had great fun on this trip and hopefully have made some good friends for life!

What people love about barcelona tours.

The itinerary was good; liked the fact that we had a lot of time on our own and that we had the same hotel at least 2 nights in a row. Did not like the fact that we had to take a public bus to our hotel with luggage in tow, and that we had to drag our luggage to various pick-up stops. We have not experienced that on prior tours. The day in Cordoba was poorly planned, leaving us no time to tour the city on our own as was promised. Otherwise everything was fine.
Had a wonderful time, the tour guide was very helpful and the hotels were of good standard.
Well organized. Tour guide Maria spoke three languages for our small group. Eduardo was a very safe driver. Hotels were clean. Maps and suggestions for free time were provided. Would definitely recommend.

I'm a female solo traveller... here are THREE European cities I wished I'd skipped

  • Food and travel blogger Sooyeun, 22, backpacked from Porto to Paris to Prague
  • A year on, she shared which three of the 17 cities she would not visit again
  • Though she stressed this was just opinion, she was not let off in the replies

A female solo traveller has revealed the three European countries she wished she had skipped.

Food and travel blogger Sooyeon, who goes by @soos.foods  online, travelled to 17 different cities - backpacking from Porto to Prague and Seville to Salzburg.

But some of the biggest cities on her whistle-stop tour left her disappointed

Her list began with Spain 's capital: 'First is Madrid - the main reason is because I went to both Madrid and Barcelona on the same trip and I feel like Madrid didn't have as many things to do, for me at least, other than the palace and museums.

'If I were to do this trip again, I would probably skip Madrid and spend more time in Barcelona.'

Second on Sooyeun's list was he Sicilian city of Catania.

'I went into it hoping it would be a nice Italian vacation,' she recalled, 'but the city just felt a little run down and not the safest.'

The 22-year-old traveller explained she was stared at by locals and it made her feel uncomfortable.

Finally, and possibly most divisively, was Berlin, where she admitted she 'would love to live'.

Sooyeun was particularly impressed by the 'cool cafes, shops and roads', however, she was put off the city by its abundance of museums - especially history - relative to other tourist opportunities.

She also admitted that at this stage of her European tour she was 'getting severe museum fatigue'.

The other issue the food blogger had with Germany's capital was its lack of 'authentic local food options' compared to a burgeoning international food scene.

Sooyeun was documenting what she ate in many of the cities in seperate vlogs, so had focused on sticking to traditional cuisine.

One comment suggested that 'if you didn't like Berlin it means you didn't know where to go', while someone else said it was a 'must see'.

Others insisted: 'Berlin has so much more than history museums.

'Skip Berlin? You have got to be joking it is one of the best cities in Europe, so much to do.'

'Berlin? There is so much to do and see and I didn't spend all my time at the museum. I feel like you missed a lot!'

The backpacker did reply to say that while she knew Berlin was supposed to have excellent night life, she did not try it out as, being a lone female tourist, she felt unsafe going out late clubbing.

There were also plenty out in the comments coming to the defence of Madrid, with the mention of Barcelona seemingly rattling a few nerves too.

'Madrid is so much better than Barcelona, there is so much to do!'

'Madrid is way better than Barcelona people are just not ready for it.'

'Barcelona better than Madrid?'

Fewer people came to the defence of Catania, perhaps just as it is a smaller place and a less popular tourist hotspot than the other two.

However, one comment joked: 'Never been to Catania, but adding it straight to the top of my list if you don’t like Berlin and Madrid.'
