Interesting app

Most map apps such as citymapper and google maps bring similar functionality, but the tfl developers have indeed done a good job of providing a well designed and simplified experience with a focus on public transport in London and accessibility (both in the app and in finding accessible transport options). I am particularly impressed with the consistent design style that reflects the tfl brand really well. I would be curious to find out what technologies you used when building out the screens and interactive map 😁! Of course there are always tradeoffs when designing a whole navigation app around the london tube map seeing as those unfamiliar with the london tube may find it unintuitive, as geographical distances and locations in london aren’t conveyed like they are on an ordinary map. In addition, the amount of text on the map and text on the main option buttons at the bottom may make the main app screen slightly less accessible to certain people. However, given the constraints of working off the tfl map, the design is still impressive. To make the app better, it would be good to add some more disambiguation for places vs stations. Eg: High Barnet may refer to the tube station or the centre of the area.

Developer Response ,

Hi Nina. Thank you so much for your very detailed review and amazing rating! We are thrilled to learn you have such a positive opinion! We appreciate your point on those who may be unfamiliar with london and the underground map, however, the app is designed to plan a journey from the app users current location, which will negate the need to know where you'll be starting your journey from - although this is also something you can do in the app! Damien

I have had countless apps for TFL - none as good as this!

Third party apps have all gone down the drain imo mostly due to ads subscription fees and the info is just late and then I found out TFL have their very own app now so I thought that wouldn’t be good as they’re not devs but they have got good devs and built a brilliant app that has everything you want & more! It’s up to date information and will even let you know when lifts are down on certain platforms. The UI is nice and smooth and the map as you’d expect from the very people who run it. This is right up there in my favourite travel apps now. Finally deleted old apps like movit - citymapper and all the countless others. Download it - it’s the best! 😎👍

Platform numbers would be helpful when using the planner part

The end user still does not have the information given about what platform number the train is departing from. For example. I planned a journey from Paddington to heathrow at 04:42 it says walk to platform london Paddington. For me it's clear it's the national rail station for otherswho are foreign will not see any difference. I know first westbound services depart from the main line station and elizabeth line ststion at Paddington does not open till 0528hrs. It would be helpful if you could PLEASE put the platform numbers as when it is available. This will help a lot of people who are using the app know which platform to go to. Another example I can show is if someone was to go to Gatwick Airport from paddington it just says go to platform. I really needs to tell the user at Paddington use elizabeth line train from platform A to Farringdon from Farringdon go to platform 3. TFL really needs to acknowledge this because it's frtrsting for me to tell you guys the basics the app needs to have.

C an you tell me more about the incident?

A track circuit failure is disrupting trains travelling northbound between London Blackfriars and London St Pancras International.

This part of the network uses track circuits to detect the position of trains. These are electrical systems which monitor whether a train is on a section of track. They operate as part of the signalling system, which is designed to be "fail safe".

When a track circuit fails, the signalling system will interpret this as a train remaining in place, even though there may not be a train present at all, or the previous service may have long since left the area.

As a result, further trains cannot be automatically allowed onto the relevant section of track. Train drivers will be stopped by red signals on approach. They will then get verbal permission from the signaller so that they can proceed, and will run at a heavily-reduced speed as far as the next signal. This is so that the drivers will stop safely if they see anything ahead of them.

In some areas, the sections between signals can be several miles long, so this can result in delays building up. Even with shorter sections of track affected, there would still be a delay of at least a few minutes to each journey.

Track circuit faults can be caused by a number of different issues, including electronic faults or obstructions on the track. Network Rail manage the signalling system, including track circuits, and their staff are investigating the fault as a matter of urgency.

Check before you travel:

You can check your journey using the National Rail Enquiries real-time Journey Planner .

 Compensation:

You may be entitled to compensation if you experience a delay in completing your journey today. Please keep your train ticket and make a note of your journey, as both will be required to support any claim.

Tree on the line in the Strood area  - affected Southeastern services may delay Thameslink services through the area

Trespasser between Rochester and Gillingham  - All trains are now on the move, although it will take some time for the service to recover back to it's advertised timetable

Tree on the line between Charlton and London Bridge , diverting between the two stations.

Four Tube lines still delayed

Multiple Tube lines and the Overground have been hit with multiple delays throughout today.

There is still disruption to the following lines: District, Piccadilly, Central and District.

Bakerloo line now minor

There are currently minor delays between Stonebridge Park and Harrow & Wealdstone due to a signal failure at Harrow & Wealdstone.

That concludes the Evening Standard’s coverage of London travel for today.

TfL finally updates travel app and station signs to make London Underground and Overground closures clearer

The updates will ensure commuters can access 'a more accurate view of the network'

  • 20:14, 30 JUL 2023

Tube customers walking down escalators at Canary Wharf station

Transport for London (TfL) has updated its free TfL Go travel app and digital displays in its stations which, officials say, makes it easier for users to see whether their journey will be impacted by disruption on the Tube and other rail services.

The application now greys out sections of the live network map that are closed due to engineering works or unplanned disruption. It also highlights sections of the live rail map that are experiencing minor or severe delays .

In addition, bosses say that step-free information on TfL’s in-station Underground status displays has recently been improved "to make it easier for customers to see when there is no step-free access at stations". The information is now provided at a line, direction and platform level, 'providing a more accurate view of the network and allowing customers to make better journey planning decisions'.

Screengrab of the TfL Go app

A spokesperson for the authority said: "The free TfL Go app is the easiest way to plan your journey around London while on the move. The app, which has been downloaded more than four million times since it launched, was developed in-house by TfL and provides real-time information for buses, trams, Tube and TfL rail services in a mobile-friendly way, as well as offering walking and cycling options across London.

"The app was designed with accessibility top-of-mind, and shows not only the live step-free status of stations but also where accessible journeys can be made within stations to specific platforms, including interchanging between lines. Customers can also use iOS and Android voiceover and dynamic typing to navigate the app.

Earlier this year, TfL added fares information into the journey planner feature within TfL Go. Last year, TfL added ‘widgets’, which can be added to the home or lock screen of any iPhone or Android device, and customised by customers for a line that they wish to see live status for, or see the service status on all TfL services.

Commuters on the London Underground

The spokesperson said: "In summer 2021, TfL also added real-time information on how busy London Underground stations were at any particular point of the day, using aggregated and depersonalised data from TfL’s WiFi network. Historically, TfL has used ticketing data to understand travel patterns on the network, with quiet times data in TfL Go based largely on data from TfL’s Oyster and contactless ticketing system , which records entry and exits at stations.

"This innovative update allowed TfL to factor in how busy platforms and interchange points are to overall crowding within a station, which is displayed both when users tap on a specific station, or shown when planning a journey.

"TfL also continues to deliver 4G and 5G coverage within stations and tunnels across the London Underground, with more than 10 per cent of stations with platforms that are underground, and therefore usually unable to get a mobile signal, now having high-speed mobile coverage.

"Coverage is already live on the eastern section of the Jubilee line between Westminster and Canning Town, between Archway and Camden Town on the Northern line and between Holland Park and Queensway on the Central line, with more stations and tunnels across Central London set to be connected in the coming months."

Ben Gammon, Head of Digital at TfL, said: “These latest updates to the TfL Go app and our in-station digital displays will further help customers see more easily if there are any delays on Tube or TfL rail services. By providing up-to-date information on journeys, as well as detailed accessibility information, we can help make it easier for customers to move around the city.”

What is London TravelWatch?

London TravelWatch is the statutory transport watchdog for London, representing the interests of people who travel around the city and surrounding commuter belt. We advocate on behalf of the public to improve the travelling experiences of people who move around the capital – whether that’s through applying pressure behind the scenes, calling out issues that Londoners let us know about, or through our campaign work such as our #FreeTheBus, #DigitalExclusion and #PersonalSecurity campaigns.

We’re also the appeals body for complaints made against Transport for London, Eurostar and some rail services. We work closely with the Rail Ombudsman who handle appeals for most rail companies in the country and deal with appeals that don’t fall within their remit.

London Underground on marathon day

The  London Underground , London Overground and Docklands Light Railway are running extra services throughout marathon day and are recommended as the best way to get around to keep up with the race action.

Due to the nature of the day, expect services to be busy with crowds of spectators along the route.

Stops near the Marathon route are likely to be very busy, especially the Jubilee, Circle and District lines, and the DLR.
