Mindanao, the massive island at the foot of the Philippine archipelago, is in many ways the cultural heart of the country, a place where Indigenous people still farm their ancient homelands and Christians live alongside Muslims who first settled here in the fourteenth century. Due to anti-government insurgencies, terrorist attacks and tourist kidnappings, caution is advised against travel anywhere on the island with the exception of the islands of Siargao and Camiguin, one of the country’s most appealing tourist spots and an island with more volcanoes per square mile than anywhere else in the world.

North Mindanao, which sees the most tourist activity, is comparatively safe and accessible, most visitors make a beeline for the pint-sized island of Camiguin.

Elsewhere, northeast Mindanao is rich in ecotourism potential and offshore islands. Highlights include the ancient wooden boat discovered at Butuan, the spellbinding Enchanted River and the surfing and backpacker hotspot of Siargao.

The southeast is home to Mindanao’s largest city, Davao, a diverse and friendly place best known for its fresh fruit. Davao is also the gateway to Mount Apo, the nation’s highest peak and a magnet for trekkers and climbers.

The countryside nearby Davao and coast offer plenty of attractions, from Samal Island to the Philippine Eagle Center.

Much of western Mindanao is part of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), an area of huge tourism potential, but where the security situation is in a state of flux. Check the current security situation before considering a visit.

Whether you want to sunbathe and surf or experience something more adventurous, there are plenty of things to do in Mindanao. These are the best:

#1 Go whitewater rafting on the Cagayan de Oro River

Whitewater rafting along the fourteen major rapids of the Cagayan de Oro River gained popularity after former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo took a ride here in 2002.

The jumping-off point is at the barangay of Mambuaya, a thirty- to forty-minute ride from the city proper. The wet months (Sept and Oct) are best for intermediate and professional levels (when the rapids range from class 3 to 4), while the rest of the year is more suitable for beginners.

#2 Get a taste of lanzones in Camiguin

Visit this dazzling little island in October, when the colourful four-day Lanzones festival is held. Held in the fourth week of October, revellers dressed only in lanzones leaves (a tropical fruit) stomp and dance in the streets as a tribute to the humble fruit, one of the island’s major sources of income. It's a vibrant and good-natured outdoor party.

Find oud more about Camiguin

#3 Be wowed by the Enchanted River

This magical, remote lagoon is a deep cove of crystalline water crammed with colourful tropical fish – a visual delight. Swimming in the Enchanted River is one of the highlights of a trip to Mindanao.

The accessible part of the river is more like a narrow saltwater lagoon that ends at an underwater cave and ravine crammed with all sorts of tropical fish that get fed every day at noon.

The colours are mesmerizing; the water glows like liquid sapphire, surrounded by dense jungle and karst outcrops. The site is managed as a small park, but it’s well off the beaten path, and few foreign tourists make it this far.

#4 Check out the backpacking scene on Siargao Island

Off the northeastern tip of Mindanao lies the teardrop-shaped island of Siargao, on of the most beautiful islands in the Philippines . It's a largely undeveloped backwater with languid beaches, dramatic coves and lagoons battered by the Pacific Ocean.

Some of the first tourists here were surfers, who discovered a Pacific reef break at Tuason Point – so good, they called it Cloud 9. Though old-timers now dub it “Crowd 9” because of its popularity, there is a friendly, welcoming surfing scene here.

Siargao gives Malapascua and Panglao a run for their money as the backpacker capital of the southern Philippines .

The annual Surfing Cup, usually held in late September or early October, attracts international competitors from Australia, the US and Europe, as well as from around the Philippines

#5 Get clued up at the Museum of Three Cultures

The Museum of Three Cultures is devoted to the Christians, Muslims and seven Indigenous traditions (or “Lumad”) of northern Mindanao.

The first gallery is dedicated to this history, with exhibits on the Huluga Caves, early trade with China and the Butuan boats.

The most interesting section is dedicated to the M’ranao 9 of Marawi, an area at the heart of the Moro dispute. Exhibits cover Islamic brass work, giant ceremonial swords and traditional torogan-style houses.

#6 Get your thrills at Dahilayan Adventure Park

Billed as Mindanao’s most extreme playground, the Dahilayan Adventure Park makes for an entertaining day out, primarily for its long zipline and refreshingly cool alpine location, in the hills some 1370m above sea level.

The Dahilayan Zip Zone comprises three ziplines: an exhilarating 320m section, a tamer 150m segment, and the 840m finale, where you are chained into a full-body harness before hurtling down the mountain at 90km/hour. There’s also whitewater rafting – either come with a group or call in advance and they should be able to place you in a boat (minimum six).

#7 Gawp at Maria Cristina Falls

The most impressive cascade in the region, and located within the NPC Nature Park, the Maria Cristina Falls serves as the main source of power for much of Mindanao.

The twin falls (named after two heartbroken girls who are supposed to have jumped from the top), plunge 100m into the torrential Agus River, and are at their best on Saturday and Sunday at 11am, when the Agus VI Hydroelectric Plant upstream releases the most water. There is a zipline here, too.

#8 Sunbathe on White Island

About halfway between Mambajao and Bonbon, off the island’s northwest coast, lies one of Camiguin’s most popular attractions, White Island, a dazzling serpentine ribbon of sand only visible at low tide and easily reached by bangka from Yumbing.

The views and the water are gorgeous, but there’s no shade, so make sure that you take lots of sunblock.

#9 Surf Cloud 9 (Tuason Point)

Sleep, eat, surf: that’s the mantra 2km further north from GL at Cloud 9, the world-renowned break at Tuason Point. On most days, from sunrise to sundown, you’ll find surfers in action: beach bums previously watched from the multi-storey wooden viewing pavilion in front of the break, and will no doubt do so again once it is rebuilt following its destruction in Typhoon Odette.

The peak surf season is September and October before things slow down at the end of the year; beginners will find the weaker surf in June and July more manageable.

Both Camiguin and Siargao have an array of different options, from quality hostels and identikit business hotels to luxurious beachside resorts. For an authentic night's kip, book a rural homestay. There are the best places to stay in Mindanao.

Cagayan de Oro and around

Full of identikit downtown hotels, cheapie business stays and some half-decent midrange options . The high-end hotels tend to be newer here.

Iligan and around

Kitschy complexes with pools and reliable national chains. There are decently priced, if unimaginative, hotels in and around Iligan. It’s unlikely to be the standout accommodation of your trip.

Camiguin Island

Most of the seaside accommodation in Camiguin is west of Mambajao on the beaches between the small towns of Bug-ong and Naasag. Resorts near the town of Agoho, a little west of Bug-ong, remain popular due to their easy access to White Island. East of Mambajao, around the village of Balgabon, you’ll find more resorts, although the beach here isn’t as good as at Agoho, Yumbing or Naasag.

Surigao City

There's a bit of luxury here with the Almont which offers good rooms with sensational views of the bay. Else it's smart modern business hotels, a couple of boutique options, and some okay B&Bs.

Siargao Island

Siargao accommodation ranges from low-budget surf lodges to upmarket tropical resorts. Most places are a short distance from GL or Cloud 9, and the best can help arrange motorbike rentals, bangka trips and all kinds of tours.

From the gleaming, multi-storey hotels to 1950s-era heritage houses, Davao has the lot. There are some great upmarket hotels here as well as value-for-money a/c backpacker dorms in hostels.

Away from the cities, expect to have decent pizzas, curries, burgers and the like served at your resort. In Davao and Cagayan de Oro, though, there are endless opportunities to eat out.

Cagayan de Oro

Head to the Rosario Arcade or the Ayala Centrio Mall for a vast selection of restaurants and takeaway food. As well as Filipino classics, there are numerous Western outlets in the city too.

Eating on Camiguin is mostly limited to the resorts, but a few new standout restaurants have opened in recent years. Like everywhere else in the Philippines, there’s an inexplicable number of Italian pizzerias and restaurants, while in Mambajao, there’s a cluster of cheap places to eat around the market area.

Burgers, pizzas, curries and seafood are all available throughout this busy city with the best food generally serve on the seafront. There are some great places to try Filipino food too.

Most of the best places to eat and drink are in the resorts, but a number of independent places have opened over the past few years. Everywhere is lively during peak season, particularly during the Surfing Cup, when various places on Cloud 9 put on live music.

Davao’s best restaurants are scattered all over the city, but the safest bet for a cheap meal are the food courts located in or around the shopping malls. Durian fruit is a big deal in Davao, and is available in every form, from durian ice cream to durian-flavoured cappuccino. The best season for the fruit is Sept–Dec.

Guerrera, Camiguin The street-food craze has reached Camiguin, and the location of this first-rate restaurant, set beside a beautiful rice paddy and organic garden, instantly transports you to rural Vietnam or Laos. Dishes such as pad thai, Vietnamese noodle salads and bánh xèo (savoury crispy pancakes) are all knockouts.

The best way to get to Mindanao is by flying into Cagayan de Oro, which has domestic and international flights.

Laguindingan International Airport is 33km northwest of Cagayan de Oro – about an hour’s drive. The airport is accessible by jeepney (first to the Laguindingan turnoff, then take the shuttle to the airport), but the most convenient transfers are with LAX Shuttle, which picks up at the Centrio Ayala Mall, or with Magnum Express, which leaves from Magnum Radio in CM Recto.

The Eastbound bus terminal is near the Limketkai Center, 3km east of the centre (off Recto Ave), while the Westbound Bus and Jeepney Station lie 6km west of the centre on the Iligan road.

Find out the best way to get to the Philippines .

If you want to explore the entire island, you may need several weeks in Mindanao, or even a month. However, if you have limited time, it's possible to experience some of the highlights in around two weeks.

This would include Davao, tackling Mount Apo, the highest peak in the Philippines, and stopping in at the Philippine Eagle Center. It would also mean surfing and sunbathing in Siargao Island, seeing the waterfalls, hot springs, and historical landmarks of Camiguin and going white-water rafting in Bukidnon.

Most locals use tricycles in the larger cities, but there are a number of ways to get around Mindanao, which are affordable and easy. Note that choices for getting around Siargao are fairly limited.

By tricycle

Most locals use tricycles to get around the cities like C AND D (6am–10pm). Tricycles will often quote high charges to tourists.

Jeepneys are easy to pick up and typically run back and forth along all major thoroughfares in cities with their destinations pasted on the side – it’s just a question of flagging one down and hopping on.

A/C taxis can take you around town or on tours to most local sights. There are also non-a/c “PU” taxis which run fixed routes for a set rate. They are both cheap and easy to use. Hail them in the street and check the meter is turned on.

By habal-habal

Most locals use the habal-habals, good for up to two people and light luggage; the vehicles are customized with retro-fitted carry racks for long- and shortboards. Rates are fixed, so you shouldn’t need to negotiate.

By motorbike rental

If you intend to do a lot of roaming around, having your own wheels is definitely recommended. Ask your accommodation about renting a motorcycle.

The best time to visit Mindanao is during the dry season, which runs from December to April. During these months, the weather is generally warm and sunny, making it an ideal time for beach activities, hiking, and other outdoor adventures. However, it's worth noting that this is also the peak tourist season, so expect higher prices and larger crowds.

The months of May to November mark the rainy season in Mindanao, and while the rainfall may not be constant throughout these months, it's best to avoid visiting during this time. The wet season can lead to landslides and flooding, making it difficult to travel around and enjoy the island's attractions fully.

Overall, the best time to visit Mindanao is during the dry season from December to April. However, if you're looking for a more budget-friendly trip with fewer crowds, visiting during the shoulder season months of May and November can still offer a great experience with the added bonus of lush, green landscapes.

Mindanao travel guide

Mindanao, the large island in the Philippines' far south, has long been associated with insurgency, but this appears to be a thing of the past –  a major breakthrough in 2012 should signal the arrival of this beautiful island as a tourist destination. Highlights include Mt Apo , the loftiest peak in the country, the tropical beaches of Samal Island near Davao , and the towering Aliwagwag waterfall. The island has exceptional hiking and trekking opportunities, scuba diving and white-water action not far from the booming city of Davao.

Indigenous tribes range across Mindanao, occupying huts that stand on stilts above the ground, where wild animals may otherwise attack, or over the water in seafaring regions. Some indigenous groups follow Islam and mosques may outnumber Catholic churches in southwestern towns as locals adhere to the religion introduced about 800 years ago, before the Spanish arrived.

Places to see in Mindanao

This city of 1.5 million people, in the northernmost part of Davao del Sur Province, is booming with hotels, malls, and housing projects. Downtown, compact compared to its peers Manila and Cebu, is a pedestrian-friendly mix of malls, university buildings, and street-side diners.

In verdant hills, just 15 minutes from town, is the regionally famous Davao Crocodile Park ( www.davaocrocodilepark.com ). Several sizeable enclosures show the reptile in different stages of growth, including dozens of 60cm (2ft) -long juveniles sunning themselves en masse in the heavily fenced compound replete with a variety of palms offering cool shade. Pangil, a 6-meter (19ft) -long crocodile is the star of the mini zoo that also comes with tigers, toucans, native deer, and a civet. Buloy, a 3.3-meter (11ft) -long albino Indian python is tame enough to put on one’s shoulders for photographs.

Aliwagwag Falls

Near the town of Cateel on Mindanao's east coast are the towering Aliwagwag Falls. At 340 meters (1,110ft) high and 20 meters (65ft) wide, these are the highest falls in the country, comprising a series of 84 falls appearing like a stairway, with each step ranging from 2–34 meters (6–110ft).

In the depths of Mindanao soars Mount Apo, the highest Philippine peak, challenging outdoor enthusiasts to scale its full 2,956 meters (9,700ft).

Now a national park, the massif encompasses a 72,800-hectare (180,000-acre) base of lush tropical rainforest, boiling mineral springs, sulfur vents, lakes, and waterfalls. The only recorded eruption was in 1640. All physical indications, however, point to continuing volcanic activity deep below.

A trail from the launch point follows the Marbel River canyon. Trekkers have a chance of seeing monkeys, wild pigs, and the endangered Philippine eagle as they hike through the jungles past Lake Venado. Another route, the Kidapawan Trail, jumps off at the continuously boiling Lake Agco, passing through a part of the Marbel river, the Mainit Hot Spring, and Malou Shi Waterfalls. Atop awaits an unobstructed panoramic view of the whole of Mindanao.

A guide is required. The guides, who may also work as porters, run three-day and four-day trips from Davao to the summit. Trekkers – or their outfitters – should bring tents, stoves, and hiking poles.

Camiguin Island

Off the north central coast of Mindanao, the small island of Camiguin is home to laid-back resorts and white sand beaches, steep volcanoes, jungles, waterfalls, and natural springs both hot and cold..

Rent a motorcycle or scooter to explore. The 64km (40-mile) loop road and all of the roads that lead off it offer unlimited potential for exploring an area with the highest number of volcanoes per square kilometer of any island on the planet.

Head south along the highway to see the ruins of Gui-ob Church. Loll about on the grassy area where the church pews would have been: thick stone walls are now the church’s only remnants from the same eruption.

Toward the eastern side of Camiguin is pretty Mantigue Island. For a small fee, partake of the daily catch while learning about the life for the local fishing community. It is also possible to head out to Kabila Beach, where rare taklobo (giant clams) are being bred. Ask local private boat operators about rates and schedules.

To cool off, rappel down the 76-meter (250ft) Katibawasan Falls to a pool surrounded by orchids and ferns, or trek along a rocky riverbank to reach Tuasan Falls.

Traveller's Guide To Mindanao, Philippines

Mount Apo Summit

Majestic and breathtaking – that’s how travelers describe Mindanao’s top nature spots and hidden gems. Being the second largest island group next to Luzon , Mindanao has been dubbed the country’s ‘Land of Promise’ for its untapped, promising natural resources. It has become globally known for being home to the surf capital of the country, a famous highly-urbanized city, and jaw-dropping beaches.

Brief history and culture.

Mindanao is known to have the largest Muslim community and diverse native ethnic groups in the country. Because the area is near to the countries of Malaysia and Indonesia, historical accounts mention that Muslim, Hindu and Buddhism influence were very prominent during the early times of Mindanao because of neighboring migrants. The term ‘ Mindanao ‘ was coined after the largest group which settled in the area – ‘ Maguindanaos.’ While Sultanates were among the first to establish their presence, they were soon converted into Islam because of the Muslim migrants who displaced the non-Muslim natives.

Apart from Muslims, Malaysians and Indonesians, some inhabitants of Mindanao are also of Indian, Arab, or Chinese descent. It won’t be sufficient to pinpoint a prevailing culture because the island is rich in diversity and various origins, temperaments and religions are present. There are remnants of Spanish settlement in the northwestern peninsula, whereas Sultanates are found in the southwestern part, for instance.

While the Visayans ‘ Cebuano language is widely-spoken in Mindanao, there are also dialects spoken in other areas such as Chavacano, Hiligaynon, and Illonggo. There are also ethnic minority groups such as T’boli, Maranao, Bagobo, and Manobo living in the area.

Natural features and climate

Mainly characterized by narrow coastal plains, peninsulas, and faulted mountains, Mindanao has a range of tropical rainforests and great biodiversity. Some of the world’s largest pineapples, bananas, and pomelos are grown here. There are also abundant mineral resources and the area takes pride in its rich variety of fish, corals, and pearls, wherein the finest pearls are found in Sulu City in Mindanao.

The best time to travel to Mindanao is during the months of March to May, where it’s generally summertime in the country.

Must-see destinations in Mindanao

Among the three main island groups of the Philippines , Mindanao seems to be the least visited despite its spectacular beaches and fine-looking tourist attractions. The tourism industry in Mindanao has been plagued by terrorism threats. However, there are notable areas which have won the hearts of adventure-seekers and travelers. These are:

Surigao del Norte and Surigao del Sur

Enchanted River in Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur

Both the provinces of Surigao del Norte and Surigao del Sur have become part of the bucket list for most first-time travelers in Mindanao. The teardrop-shaped island of Siargao , popular to surfers, is found in Surigao del Norte whereas adventure-seekers are being drawn to the majestically blue river called Enchanted River in Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur. Get ready to immerse yourself in the wonders of nature and be rewarded with a relaxing atmosphere in these two destinations!

Davao Region

Samal Island in Davao

Davao Region has become famous for having one of the most highly-urbanized cities of the country, marvelous beach escapades, and being home to the endangered Philippine eagle species. Davao City is said to be among the safest cities in the world, being known to enforce strict laws to its citizens. Within the region, you can also visit Mindanao’s most sought-after beaches of Samal Island. The Philippine Eagle Center, the breeding facility of the critically-endangered species, is also found in the Davao Region.

Camiguin Island

Renowned for its long stretch of white sand and clear turquoise waters, it’s expected that the pear-shaped island of Camiguin will soon become an enormous tourist spot. That’s because it’s a natural paradise of unspoiled beaches, waterfalls, cold and hot springs, and historical treasures. Easily reached from neighboring island Cebu , this amazing island will surely satisfy the wanderlust!

Camiguin

For mountain climbers and nature lovers, you shouldn’t skip to visit the highest peak in the country, Mount Apo. Situated in between Davao Region and Cotabato province, the active stratovolcano is surrounded by rivers, boulders, and forests rich in flora and fauna, making the climbing and trek experience an extraordinary and challenging one.

Mount Apo

Cagayan de Oro

And, for anyone looking to have an ultimate adventure travel in the Philippines, it’s never complete without visiting the country’s white water rafting adventure capital, which is also in the island of Mindanao. The Cagayan River or Rio Grande de Cagayan has wild, unlimited rapids perfect for an adrenaline-filled experience. This fast-paced, extreme outdoor activity will surely test your nerves!

Cagayan de Oro River

Mindanao Travel Guide

In a nutshell.

Mindanao Island is a large island in the southern region of the Philippines best known for its beautiful beaches, incredible forests, rich history and tropical fruit trade. It’s the second largest island in the country.

Where to go in Mindanao

Davao City is the largest city on the island. Davao is best known for its fruit and orchid trade . It’s most famed for the durian, the King of Fruits, which is so stinky that it’s banned from hotels and other public places. Davao is so well known for durian that there are statues of the spiky fruit all over the town. But in addition to durian, Davao also grows many other fruits including mangosteen, rambutan, longan and lychee, for example. The fruit phenomenon is so great that people come from all over the road just for fruit season, which takes place in the summer. You can tour the orchards where the fruits are grown and can also take tours of orchid farms, and purchase the beautiful flowers to take home, if you’re confident that you can keep them in one piece in your luggage!

Zamboanga City is another major population centre on Mindanao. As a port city, Zamboanga is a perfect place for history buffs . Because traders from all lands have come through Zamboanga to ply their wares, it’s rich with history and influences from many different places. It’s a good place to see architecture from all the eras and rulers of the Philippines. Zamboanga is full of churches, forts, and other various buildings that are worth checking out.

Cagayan de Oro City is a city in the northern part of the island. Home to nearly half a million inhabitants, the city is growing at a rapid pace to accommodate its expanding population. Cayagan de Oro is yet another example of a Filipino city that seamlessly blends history and culture with natural beauty to ensure that every type of visitor will find something to enjoy.

Historically-inclined visitors to Cagayan de Oro shouldn’t miss the San Augustin Cathedral, the MacArthur Memorial Marker, or Macahambus Hill. The cathedral is centuries old, features beautiful stained glass windows and was built in the Gothic style; the MacArthur Memorial commemorates American General Douglas MacArthur; and Macahambus Hill was the site of a major battle during the Philippines American War in 1900.

The Museo de Oro is a museum that features Fili[ino artifacts that were found in the region, and is a nice air-conditioned stop for travellers that need to cool off a little bit in the middle of the hot day. For those who want to get out of town and see some nature, Catanico Falls, surrounded by boulders and tropical rainforests (also a great place for swimming) is a great option for a day trip out of the city. The same can be said for Monigue Cave, where visitors are able to enjoy the cavernous depths and an underground stream that runs through the cave.

Because of its size and its popularity as a tourist destination, Cagayan has both local and Western food options as well as many lodging options for budgets of all types.

General Santos City is an urban city in the south of Mindanao Island best known as the home of boxer Manny Pacquiao and also for its tuna fishing industry. There are no beaches, waterfalls, or other objects of natural beautify in General Santos (known by locals as Gen San) so visitors should expect to be doing “city” things when they go. For those with a hankering for shopping, KCC Mall with a good blend of local and international stores should satisfy their need. Plaza General Santos is an urban park dedicated to the Spanish general for whom the city was named.

And of course, as the city makes lots of money off fishing, tuna fishing in particular, visitors should try and eat some fish at a restaurant during their visit. It will likely be both tastier and less expensive than in other places in the Philippines.

If you’re interested in seeing where your meal came from, an interesting tourist site in the city is the General Santos City Fish Port Complex. You’ll be able to see freshly caught yellow fin tuna, albacore tuna, and skipjack tuna being offloaded, cleaned and sold to be shipped all over the world.

Mindanao is also home to the largest population of Muslims in the country , so it’s a good place to appreciate the architecture of beautiful and ornately built Filipino mosques.

When to go to Mindanao

Weather is perfect in Mindanao year-round. Temperature only fluctuates a few degrees throughout the year and in most locations, the precipitation throughout the year is spread out so that there is no dedicated rainy season.

How to get to and from Mindanao

The Davao Airport is the largest airport on the island and flights to and from Manila and Cebu are cheap, short and frequent as well.

You can also take boats from Mindanao Island to other smaller islands in the region, but it’s not a recommended method for getting there in the first place.

Is Mindanao a safe place to visit?

While Mindanao Island is an incredible tourist destination with many things for travellers of all stripes to enjoy, it’s currently not the sagest destination you could choose and many governments strongly warn against their citizens visiting the island .

For example, the United States State Department in a recent travel warning, advised to “exercise extreme caution when traveling to the island of Mindanao, due to continued terrorist threats, insurgent activities and kidnappings.” In 2016, there were 16 kidnappings involving foreigners and in September 2016, there was a coming in Davao City which killed 15 people and wounded 69 people.

If you’re a tourist who is familiar to travelling in countries and regions afflicted by terrorism, then there's a good chance that you will feel perfectly comfortable in Mindanao. Remember that the vast majority of tourists who visit Mindanao enjoy their time there and don’t have any issues. Statistically there is a much better chance of being killed in a traffic accident than in a terrorist attack!

Let me take you to the best places.

White island of Camiguin in Misamis Oriental

Travel to the small island of Camiguin and find out why it's one of the top destinations in Mindanao and in the Philippines. Read on to find out what you need to know when traveling to the Island Born of Fire.

Camiguin is a small and peaceful island province in the Philippines located in the Bohol Sea off the northern coast of Mindanao. It may be the smallest island in Mindanao and the second smallest province in the Philippines, but it has surprisingly a lot of tourist spots to offer.

  • Find tours in Cagayan de Oro , the usual entry point to Camiguin if you're not flying directly here

Dubbed the “Island Born of Fire,” Camiguin is home to seven volcanoes that continue to shape and reshape its unique landscape.

The interior forest reserves known as Mount Hibok-Hibok Protected Landscape have been declared an ASEAN Heritage Park. But for beach lovers, it’s the water-based attractions that make Camiguin special.

This compact island also hides numerous waterfalls, natural springs, unspoiled beaches and diving spots that will please adventurous travelers. Camiguin is home to a mysterious Sunken Cemetery which continues to fascinate travelers from all over the world.

For history buffs, there are interesting Camiguin tourist spots you can visit including several well-preserved ancestral houses, Spanish-era churches and heritage sites scattered around the island.

Camiguin is also famous for its sweet lanzones fruits for which an annual festival is dedicated.

Geographically part of Region 10 or Northern Mindanao, Camiguin was formerly a part of the Misamis Oriental. This province is tiny compared to neighboring provinces in the mainland region and it maintains the same laidback beach vibe similar to top island-hopping destinations in the Philippines such as Bohol and Siquijor.

  • Check out other destinations where you can experience island hopping in the Philippines

It may not have the vibrant party scene and nightlife found in other bigger island destinations like Boracay and Siargao , but Camiguin offers a very safe and peaceful getaway. It’s still a bit off-the-beaten-path for travelers, but first-time travelers will enjoy the unspoiled sights and local hospitality.

While traveling around Mindanao, be sure to include a Camiguin tour in your itinerary. Here are just some of the best tourist spots in the province you can visit.

Diving in Mantigue, Camiguin

You can join half-day or whole day tours to the top tourist spots around Camiguin . Most of the tours are inclusive of transportation, and guides. Solo travelers or backpackers also have the option to hire or rent a motorcycle or tricycle for the day to visit the famous top spots.

  • Book Camiguin tours

Visit the Sunken Cemetery

Camiguin sunken cemetery

Much of the island province of Camiguin was formed through earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Camiguin’s most iconic landmark is the Sunken Cemetery, a graveyard under the sea marked by a huge cross.

This fascinating site was formed in the 1870s when Mt. Vulcan erupted causing the cemetery along with the capital city and old town of Catarman to sink below sea level.

The looming cross that stands today serves as a commemorative marker for those who lost their lives. Though the cross is visible from a platform on the main coastal road, travelers can take a short boat ride to step onto the platform and cross itself.

Those who want a unique experience can also go snorkeling and scuba diving to see the cemetery which was driven underwater when the volcano erupted. According to locals, tombstones encrusted by corals beneath the cross can still be seen by snorkelers and scuba divers.

The eruption of Mt. Vulcan also left behind the ruins of a church and bell tower, known as the Old Church Ruins. Be sure to visit this peaceful and serene site during your Camiguin tour.

Bask on White Island’s Beautiful Sandbar

White Island in Camiguin

The Philippines has its share of beautiful beaches and Camiguin has one of the best. White Island is a scenic white sandbar with powdery fine sand located just 1.4 km off the northern shore of Mambajao that offers a picturesque spot for swimming and picnics.

Small boats can be hired from any of the beachfront resorts that face the island to get here. The best time to enjoy the beach here in the morning. For a hassle-free trip, you may book a  Camiguin White Island & countryside tour .

Since there are no trees or shelter of any kind on the island, it can get very hot at noon and early afternoon. Look out for the sea urchins being sold by local vendors as snacks to visitors.

Visit Mantigue Island Nature Park

Mantigue Island Nature Park in Camiguin

A fishing village is located on the northern side of the island, while on the other side is a white sand beach with powdery coral sand and corals offshore. This small island is located about 3.5 kilometers or a 25-30 minute boat ride off the coast of  Brgy. San Roque in the town of Mahinog.

Those who want a workout can rent a stand-up paddleboard and paddle around the island’s pristine waters near the shores. The Marine Sanctuary here is one of the diving spots in the Philippines.

Take a Dip in Ardent Hibok-Hibok Hot Spring

Ardent Hibok-Hibok hot spring

As a volcanic island, Camiguin has numerous hot and cold volcanic springs, popular with locals and international travelers.

One of the most popular is Ardent Hot Springs, which has several pools with fresh and hot sulfuric waters heated by Hibok-Hibok Volcano ranging from 33°C to 40°C. The water comes right out of the forest and gets mixed with colder water into the separate pools arranged in cascades.

Chill in Sto. Nino Cold Springs

Those who want to cool down can head to the Sto. Nino Cold Spring, a large pool with a refreshingly chill 20°C temperature. This natural cold spring flows down from Mt. Mambajao and is filtered by layers of minerals from the mountain, making it is naturally clean and crystal clear.

The main pool is quite large and deep, ranging from 4 ft to 8 ft. The water here flows into a smaller pool built for children. Locals believe that bathing in this spring for an hour or more has beneficial effects on the skin, saying it makes the skin feel smoother and look younger.

Fizz out in a Soda Water Park

Soda waterpark in Camiguin

One of the more unique natural springs in Camiguin is a Soda Pool known for having natural streaming soda water, which locals claim has a fizzy taste. Visitors can try drinking soda water directly from a drinking fountain nearby.

While time has degraded the natural soda underwater and changed the taste of the soda water to freshwater, this is a scenic and refreshing place to take a dip. The Soda Swimming Pool is surrounded by lush greenery of trees and flowering bushes, making it a pleasant stop for picnics.

Visit Waterfalls

Camiguin has its share of waterfalls, though only a few of them are relatively accessible and have developed for visitors.

The most popular and one of the tallest is Katibawasan Falls, which stands 76 meters high and streams down from the mountainside located in the middle of the forest. You can take a dip in the small basin at the base of the falls.

Tuawasan Falls is a bit smaller and more set apart from the tourist resorts in Agoho and Yumbing. Getting here involves a plesant30 minute hike following the river bed.

What to Eat in Camiguin

Camiguin is well-known for having the sweetest lanzones, a sweet tropical fruit that grows abundantly on the island.

Lanzones is a ttropical fruit abundantly available in Camiguin island

Camiguin also has its share of unique snacks made with local ingredients. Kiping is a thin, crispy wafer shaped like a plate that’s made from dried sweet potatoes, mixed with water then fried and drizzled with latik, a sweet caramelized coconut sauce.

Sinaging is a mixture of banana (saba), sugar, ground mixed rice, condensed milk, and coconut wrapped in puso, packets made of woven coconut leaves. Koter is coconut wine mixed with ground cacao, evaporated milk and beaten chicken eggs.

Meat eaters will want to sample the Lechon de Camiguin, a local version of the much-beloved roasted suckling pig found everywhere in the country. Their lechon has perfectly crispy skin, soft tender meat with just the right amount of fat that has soaked up the flavors of the herbs and secret spices.

For a unique local meal, head to J & A Fishpen Resort and Restaurant, which offers seafood and Filipino specialties like grilled tuna, crabs, pancit, squid adobo and sinigang with a refreshing view of the sea. Formerly a fishpond, J & A Fishpen was eventually converted to a floating restaurant for travelers.

What's nice about the place is that you know the fish you eat is fresh. You can even go fishing in the fishpens nearby and have your catch cooked any way you want.

Where to Stay in Camiguin

Para Beach Resort in Camiguin

More humble options and dormitory rooms for groups are available in resorts like Ardent Hibok-Hibok Spring and Resort and J & A Fishpen Resort and Apartelle.

For those who prefer artistic accommodations, check out Enigmata Treehouse Ecolodge Art Camp, an environment-friendly homestay-style accommodation on the island.

The Tinuy-an Falls is comparable to the Niagara Falls of the United States. Believe me, as you watch the majestic flow of water as it hits the ground along with the sound that it creates, you will feel nothing but peace and refreshing.

One of the tourist spots in Mindanao is the City of Zamboanga. Being here will make one feel that the Spanish influence still runs in the blood, culture, and environment of the people and the place. For natural areas, the Pink Beach in Sta. Cruz of this town is also beautiful.

Travel Tips When Visiting Various Tourist Spots in Mindanao

Many are scared they heard Mindanao. Mindanao is relatively safe. I had visited numerous tourist spots in Mindanao, and I didn’t experience any problems for each of my travels. Of course, every traveler must exercise the necessary precautions when visiting a new place, including all places in the world.

In line with the above, we recommend the following if you plan to visit any tourist spots in Mindanao.

  • Research. Before your trip, it is imperative to research the place before hitting the road. You should know if there is a pending advisory at the place. Learn the bus schedules, especially the last trip, etc. Many daring tourists meet some accidents because they miss the last bus and are forced to sleep on the street or at the terminal.
  • Contact the Local Tourism Office. This office will give you sound advice on where to go or whether to go in certain seasons.
  • Avail the services of accredited tour operators. Let’s face it: you need a guide in some places, and you cannot do it alone.
  • Get some travel insurance. Just a few more bucks will surely save you from any unforeseen accidents.
  • Check and recheck the information you get online. Not all travel bloggers who wrote about the place have been there. This is one of the reasons why I put my pics on my blog pages as much as possible to show the readers researching that I had been in the place.
  • Ask. Try to be friendly and talk to the locals when you reach the place. They can provide you with priceless pieces of information and tips.

12 Days Northeast Mindanao Itinerary – Surigao, Camiguin, Cagayan de Oro, Iligan, Bukidnon DIY Solo

My visit to Northeastern Mindanao was one of those trips that always gets me excited whenever I get reminded of the places that I’ve visited in the 12 days that I’ve spent in this part of Southern Philippines. I can’t get enough of it! Every time I review my photos or read about it online, it never fails to revive my love for travel. My trip to Northeastern Mindanao was my last major travel for the year (kind of a “last hurrah” thing) and my third-time visit to Mindanao. I wanted to see as many places as I can in a relatively short time. I actually think I pushed myself (and budget) a bit too far in this particular trip … I just couldn’t resist the wanderlust. For 12 days, I was able to visit different places (almost all for the first time) spread across the vast northeastern corner of Mindanao Island: from Iligan City, Cagayan de Oro City (Misamis Oriental), Camiguin Island, over to Butuan City, Bislig City (Surigao del Sur), Surigao City, and finally the islands of Bucas Grande and Siargao in Surigao del Norte.

Day 1: Tinuy-an Falls in Bislig City (Surigao del Sur)

My journey started with a connecting flight to Butuan City via Cebu. I wanted to head first to Bislig City (Surigao del Sur) on my first day since it’s the destination that was the farthest from my planned route. I was curious to see the Tinuy-an Falls, the widest waterfalls in the Philippines at 95 meters from end to end. It’s no Niagara but it’s very beautiful nonetheless.

Day 2: Butuan City (Agusan del Norte) Overnight Stop-over

Day 3: camiguin island circuit tour.

Camiguin was very hard to pass off. I spent 3 days and two nights to visit a couple of sights around the island. Literally “around the island,” since I was able to encircle the entire length of its circumferential road by habal-habal (single motorcycle). At first, my experience in Camiguin started to feel like an overrated tourist trap. Thank goodness my visit to Tuason Falls and the Giant Clam Sanctuary saved the day. I was also ecstatic to have met like-minded travelers during my stay at Enigmata Treehouse. The early morning visit to white island with new found friends was very memorable.

Day 4: Habal-habal tour around Camiguin Island

Day 6: malaybalay city and manolo fortich, bukidnon.

I was actually planning to visit Bukidnon because I was curious to taste its infamous pineapple-fed cattle. I ended up making a worthwhile tour of Malaybalay City also.

Cagayan de Oro, Misamis Oriental

Day 7: iligan city, day 8: surigao city (surigao del norte), day 9: sea travel to bucas grande island.

Spent the entire day just for the sea travel to Socorro town in Bucas Grande Island. The inland salt-water lagoon and caves (Sohoton Cave particularly) of Bucas Grande Island were actually my main destination. I’ve seen photos of it online and I knew I just had to go there! It’s accessible from General Luna (famous for Cloud9 surf spot) in Siargao Island but boat rentals from there were very steep. I decided to push my luck at spending the night at Socorro in Bucas Grande Island itself since it’s nearer (and cheaper to get) to the Sohoton Caves National Park from there. From Surigao City, I took the 3-hour ferry to Dapa Port, Siargao and another 1.5-hour ferry to Socorro. There was a power outage when I arrived (actually during my WHOLE stay in the islands). I was alone in an already sleepy and unfamiliar remote island. It was one of my scariest travel experiences. Thankfully, I lived through it and was able to take a morning tour of Sohoton Caves the day after.

Day 10: Sohoton Caves and Siargao Island

Along with El Nido Palawan, Sohoton Caves National Park in Bucas Grande Island is the most beautiful place I’ve been in the Philippines! Getting there is so worth the effort. It seems so mysterious since you have to pass through a cave to get to the lagoon. Upon entering I was awed by the magnificent view of the super clear emerald green waters and lush hills surrounding the lagoon. The scene is so exotic and beautiful! There’s even a colorful bed of corals at the seafloor and the steep “cliff-like” walls bordering the hills. The boatmen took me to Hagupan and Magkuku-ob cave, which were also interesting places to visit. I wasn’t able to spend enough time to fully appreciate the hidden lagoons, which is why I’m still craving to come back. I also wasn’t able to see the famed non-sting jellyfish since they weren’t in season, another big reason to return!

Day 10: Cloud9, Siargao Island

When I arrived in Cloud9, I was disappointed to find out the power outage also persisted there. Some of the more budget-friendly resorts closed down because of it. All of the cheaper rooms at the resorts that were still open were fully occupied. I was in trouble since I had already spent a hefty portion of my budget for the Sohoton Caves tour. The cheapest place I found was Jungle Reef Resort at the far end of Cloud 9.

Day 11: General Luna Poblacion Walking Tour

During my second day in Siargao, I spent my time going around the town proper or poblacion of General Luna. The town has one of the most beautiful poblacion settings I’ve seen. It totally embodies what I imagine a typical tropical coastal town would look like.

Cloud9 was filled with surfers when I returned. I was looking forward to try out Surfing for the first time. Unfortunately, I didn’t have enough money left for the surfboard rental and lessons (thanks to the unexpected expenses that I’ve made so far). Total bummer!

Day 12: Flight layover in Cebu via Surigao Airport

I spent my last day for the connecting flight back home from Surigao Airport.

I had around 5 hours between flights, which I spent on a quick tour of Cebu. I’ve always wanted to experience riding the ferry from Mactan Island to Cebu City. It isn’t popular for tourists since the two bridges connecting both islands have long been in existence. Locals frequent this transport alternative to avoid to heavy traffic on the Old Mactan-Cebu Bridge (the ferries used to be the only means of crossing the Mactan Channel). It’s also faster to go by this route if coming from Cebu Downtown and going to Lapu-lapu City center. For me, taking the ferry was an interesting way to get a nice panoramic view of Cebu City’s growing skyline.

Can’t wait to return to Northeastern Mindanao again. There are so many places that I still want to visit in the area and places that I want to re-visit!

Don’t leave yet. There’s more!

August … me and my friends are planning a trip to the islands of Concepcion, Iloilo this August 2-4. We want to spend 3D/2N in Pan de Azucar Island, do a bit of island hopping, and hopefully scale Mt. Manaphag (Mt. Pan de Azucar). I appreciate your sharing of travel photos. Mindanao is so beautiful, my trip there was a memorable experience, too. I didn’t get to see Del Monte farm and Ma. cristina falls because they require permits. but I was able to see the childhood home of pres. Gloria Arroyo beside a resort in Iligan.

July 23, 2011 at 6:21 pm

Ahh… nice.. Didn’t go to Del Monte Farm either but next time I’m so gonna get on the “Flying Habal-habal.” There’s no permit needed for Ma. Cristina Falls nowadays since it’s open to the public.

wow! i am so happy knowing that you visited my beloved place- surigao city.

renting cottages in General Luna is quite expensive. good for me, i have a good native Siargaonon friend lives in GL. everytime i visit GL, i stayed in her place. so nakakatipid ako sa gastusin. try also to visit del carmen in siargao esp the sugba lagoon.

August 24, 2011 at 10:19 pm

August 25, 2011 at 10:58 pm

Yep traveling solo in the Philippines can be expensive especially when having to rent out a whole boat to go island hopping. Even just Surigao City is beautiful already … would like to explore more of Surigao del Norte. Gusto ko bumalik this summer para ma experience ko din ang non-sting jelly fish!

November 5, 2011 at 11:20 pm

whoah! nice! :) I am planning to go to Surigao (Bucas Grande) this december and would like to have a side trip either in Butuan for Tinuy-an or Iligan for Ma Cristina and Tinago falls. Which one would you recommend? How did you go from Iligan to Surigao? Thanks!

November 11, 2011 at 6:58 pm

It depends … if Bucas Grande were my main destination … I’d go to destinations in that corner of Mindanao first … Tinuy-an falls would be what I would choose … and then reserve Iligan on another trip, which would include other spots nearby as well like Camiguin, CDO, and Bukidnon.

There are buses going to Cagayan de Oro from Surigao City (via Butuan) … you’d have to switch to the West-bound terminal in Bulua, CDO to catch the bus headed to Iligan.

hello! i’m a big fan of your blog…and it really gives me the inspiration to travel…i have a plan to travel on my birthday to siargao…but i saw your pics on bucas grande island and oh boy they made me so excited….just wanted to ask if how much is the cost to tour around siargao and bucas grande island?

February 2, 2013 at 9:28 pm

My budget was around P1,000 per day. It could get more expensive especially if you’re renting a whole boat to yourself.

  • What to include in a travel brochure?

How to make a travel brochure?

Final thoughts.

Widely preferred by travel agencies and businesses, the travel trifold brochure template is a compact, yet effective means to showcase travel destinations with finesse and clarity. This tri-fold brochure design, meticulously crafted by graphic designers, is an art of balancing minimal text, colorful images, and strategic placement of details to captivate the potential customer.

Creative Travel Brochure Template

The beauty of the trifold design lies in its structure. With three distinct panels, it allows a business to segregate information efficiently, dedicating space for highlighting specific travel destinations, detailing travel insurance options, and even showcasing enticing beach getaways or outdoor activities.

Creating an effective trifold travel brochure requires more than just filling in a template. It involves understanding the target audience, selecting images that resonate, and providing helpful information without overwhelming the reader.

Vacation Tours Travel Tri Fold Brochure Template

Travel guide brochures serve as a comprehensive roadmap for tourists, encapsulating the essence of a destination. These brochures, often crafted by skilled graphic designers, emphasize not just the beauty of travel destinations but also offer helpful information to potential tourists.

Such brochures not only highlight the picturesque landscapes and popular spots but delve deeper into the local culture, hidden gems, and off-the-beaten-path treasures that make every trip memorable.

Tokyo Gradient Professional Travel Tri Fold Brochure Template

Travel agencies recognize this and invest in high-quality brochure designs, often leveraging free travel brochure templates to kick-start the creative process. Such brochures can easily be customized with one’s own photos, brand assets, and unique design elements to resonate with the target audience.

Simple Vacation Travel Tri Fold Brochure Template

For businesses, the travel guide brochure also doubles as a marketing tool. An effective brochure, which is more than just a compilation of images and minimal text, encourages visitors to explore the destination, engage with local businesses, and soak in the experiences offered.

Adventure travel brochures are designed to ignite the spirit of adventure in potential travelers. Unlike regular travel brochures, these focus on adrenaline-pumping activities, remote locations, and experiences that push boundaries.

Each page aims to evoke a sense of thrill, showcasing activities like wildlife watching, mountaineering, deep-sea diving, or exploring rugged terrains. It’s not just about the destination; it’s about the journey and the challenges that come with it.

Knowing that the reader is seeking thrills, the brochure design prioritizes showcasing outdoor activities, perhaps offering details on off-season perks or travel insurance tailored to adventure sports.

Every element, from the photos to text boxes, is strategically placed to offer the reader just enough information to pique their curiosity, but not too much to give everything away.

After all, adventure is about the unknown, and a well-designed brochure ensures the potential customer is eager to embark on that journey of discovery.

Cruise travel brochures serve as a beacon to those seeking luxurious adventures on the high seas. These beautifully curated pieces often give potential travelers a glimpse into the grandeur of life aboard a majestic liner.

With pictures of expansive sun decks, gourmet dining experiences, and panoramic ocean views, the cruise travel brochure is designed to captivate. Additionally, detailed itineraries often accompany these images, showcasing the various ports of call, on-shore excursions, and cultural events passengers can partake in.

Moreover, the brochure provides insights into the various amenities on board, be it rejuvenating spas, entertainment options, or themed nights. For many, the allure of a cruise lies in the harmonious blend of relaxation and exploration, and a well-designed brochure ensures that this balance is perfectly conveyed.

Beach travel brochures are an invitation to a world of sun, sand, and serenity. Evoking the rhythmic sounds of crashing waves and the gentle warmth of golden sands, these brochures are crafted to transport readers to idyllic coastal paradises.

Vivid photographs of palm-fringed shores, azure waters, and sun-drenched landscapes take center stage, promising a retreat from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Beyond the natural beauty, these brochures delve into the experiences that beach destinations offer.

From thrilling water sports and beachside activities to local seafood feasts and tropical nightlife, readers are given a comprehensive overview of what awaits.

A well-constructed beach travel brochure doesn’t just showcase a destination; it encapsulates the very essence of a beach holiday, offering both tranquility and excitement in equal measure.

Vintage travel brochures harken back to an era of classic adventures, romanticizing travel in a way that’s nostalgic and deeply evocative. With designs reminiscent of the golden age of travel, these brochures showcase destinations using sepia tones, retro fonts, and artistic illustrations.

Beyond the visuals, vintage brochures transport readers through time, recapturing the charm of old-world journeys, steam trains, and early air travel.

These travel brochures, often sought after by collectors and history enthusiasts, serve as a beautiful reminder of how travel used to be, making them not just informative pieces but also treasured keepsakes.

Minimalist travel brochures are the epitome of the adage “less is more.” Rooted in clean lines, muted color palettes, and uncluttered design, these brochures present travel information in a straightforward yet impactful manner.

Gone are the excessive embellishments; instead, every element, from images to text boxes, is thoughtfully curated and placed.

Such a design approach prioritizes clarity, ensuring that the potential customer isn’t overwhelmed but is instead drawn into the essential aspects of the travel offering.

Minimalist brochures resonate particularly well with a target audience that appreciates simplicity, elegance, and the sheer beauty of unadulterated visuals.

Modern travel brochures embody the zeitgeist of contemporary design. They are vibrant, dynamic, and often interactive, reflecting the ever-evolving nature of today’s travel trends.

What to include in a travel brochure?

Crafting an effective travel brochure requires the amalgamation of essential information, captivating visuals, and purposeful design.

Whether you’re a seasoned travel agency or just trying your hand at travel brochure design, having a checklist of indispensable elements can help in creating an impactful brochure that appeals to your target audience. Let’s delve into the key components to include:

  • Destination name : Clearly mention the travel destination to set expectations for potential tourists.
  • Eye-catching cover photo : Use a colorful image or a collage of images that captures the essence of the destination, ensuring it takes center stage on the brochure cover.
  • Brief description : Give a succinct overview of the destination, highlighting its unique selling points and major attractions.
  • Map : Include a map to highlight key attractions, accommodations, and transportation options.
  • Travel itinerary : Detail day-to-day activities, sites to visit, and recommended spending time at each location.
  • Accommodation options : Provide a list of recommended places to stay, catering to a range of budgets.
  • Local attractions : Spotlight on main tourist spots, wildlife watching areas, outdoor activities, and lesser-known hidden gems.
  • Travel tips : Offer helpful information about local customs, necessary travel insurance, off-season travel benefits, and other points of interest.

  • Testimonials : Include positive feedback from previous customers to build trust and encourage visitors.
  • Contact information : Detail the travel agency’s contact information, including website link, phone number, and physical address.
  • Call to action : Encourage potential clients to reach out, book a trip, or visit the agency’s website for more information.
  • Customizable templates : If offering free travel brochure templates for potential clients or graphic designers, ensure they can easily customize them with their own photos or brand assets.

Creating an engaging travel brochure is both an art and science, capturing the essence of a destination while ensuring practicality. From enticing travelers with stunning visuals to offering valuable details that assist in planning their journey, a well-crafted travel brochure is a fundamental tool for every travel business. Let’s delve into the intricacies of designing a brochure that stands out.

Understanding the target audience

Every destination has its unique allure, captivating a distinct set of travelers. While some might be in search of adrenaline-pumping adventures, others could be seeking a serene beach getaway.

Recognizing the target audience’s preferences is pivotal in crafting a brochure that resonates with them. Analyzing feedback from previous clients, surveying potential customers, and studying travel trends can provide insights.

These insights inform not only the content but also the overall design, ensuring the travel brochure effectively engages its intended readers.

Selecting the optimal format

Travel brochures come in various formats, each serving a specific purpose. For a concise snapshot of a destination, the tri fold brochure is a popular choice among travel agencies.

On the other hand, a more extensive booklet format allows for an in-depth exploration of the travel destination, perfect for those offering a range of experiences or a comprehensive guide to a region.

Use a color scheme

The power of color in evoking emotions and setting the mood cannot be understated. The colors chosen for the travel brochure can transport readers, offering a glimpse of the destination’s ambiance. For example, earthy tones might suggest wildlife watching adventures, while cool blues could evoke images of serene beach getaways.

Moreover, the color scheme should complement the images and align with the brand assets of the travel business. Working with a graphic designer can help in selecting a palette that both represents the destination and appeals to the target audience.

Integrating practical information

While captivating visuals and narratives are vital, the functionality of a travel brochure is equally crucial. A well-designed map highlighting essential attractions, transportation hubs, and recommended accommodations aids travelers in their journey.

Additionally, crucial details like travel insurance options, off-season benefits, and links to associated travel agencies enhance the brochure’s utility. Equally essential is the inclusion of contact details right on the cover, ensuring potential clients can reach out with ease.

Comprehensive directions, both within the brochure and via digital means like QR codes or website links, further support travelers in their planning phase.

Embracing modern design elements

Today’s travelers expect a blend of traditional and digital touchpoints. Incorporating QR codes, which lead to immersive video tours or detailed websites, can seamlessly bridge this gap.

Furthermore, ensuring the brochure’s design is optimized for both print and digital ensures a broader reach, catering to varying preferences of tourists.

Use a pre-designed template

For those not looking to start from scratch, utilizing pre-designed travel brochure templates, like those offered by platforms such as Venngage , can be a time-saving choice. These templates, crafted by professional designers, ensure that the brochure design is visually appealing.

They can then be customized with their own photos, details, and branding, creating a professional travel brochure with ease.
