Training your cat to use a leash requires a sturdy, lightweight cat harness that fits well. Cat collars aren’t a good attachment point for leashes, especially breakaway collars, for safety reasons—feline necks can easily slip out of a collar, or get injured by excessive pulling. To inform our cat harness research, we spoke with animal advocate Jackson Galaxy, a cat expert and host of Animal Planet's show “My Cat From Hell,” about what features to look for in a cat harness.

"There are people who will stand behind a lot of different types of harnesses. The kind that I go for are the ones that are more like vests, that cover the top part of a cat’s chest," Galaxy told The Spruce Pets.

What to Look for in a Cat Harness

When choosing a cat harness that’s right for you and your kitties, be sure to consider style and materials, sizing and fit and closures.

Sizing & Fit

Each manufacturer will have their own recommendations on how and where to measure your cat, but most are based on a chest and neck measurement. Then you’ll reference a sizing chart or table to get the right size for your cat. Most offer from two to six size choices giving you the best chance for a perfect fit. And fit is perhaps the most important feature because without the right fit, your cat can slip out of the harness and risk getting lost or injured.

Some are adjustable while others are not, so take that into consideration when measuring your cat. Measure twice to avoid errors in size selection and search reviews about fit to see if you should round up or down when you’re on the edge between two sizes.

The six most common types of cat harnesses are Vest, Step-In, H-Style, Roman, Jacket, and Figure Eight, but terms are often used interchangeably by manufactures or to reflect designs that are a combination.

Vest Harness: This style of harness has a chest piece (often made out of breathable mesh) that is connected to two adjustable straps on one side that will join the opposite side with buckles. “The most secure styles are vests or jackets, but some cats will only tolerate H-style harnesses–also called a figure-eight style–which consist of more minimal straps and loops,” explains Galaxy. Those called “step-in” mean that your cat’s paws must go through holes in the harness so avoid this style if your cat isn’t cooperative. Instead choose a clip on minimalist harness like the PetSafe Gentle Leader Come with Me Kitty Harness and Bungee Leash Set .

Some cats need full coverage to stay in their harness while others prefer one that’s “barely-there.” If your cat is a puller and/or tolerates bandanas, bow ties or Halloween costumes, then opt for a vest or jacket.

Polyester fabric and nylon webbing is the most common option available because it is stain and water resistant, inexpensive and durable. Those that use polyester or nylon mesh are more breathable and so a good option for warmer climates and seasons. If your cat will walk in the rain, avoid cotton that absorbs liquids and takes longer to dry than polyester fabrics.

Denim, canvas and other cotton fabrics are breathable and offer more options with regard to cute colors, prints and patterns, but not all offer the same durability and stain resistance, so choose carefully.

You want to find the balance of a secure closure method to ensure the clasp won’t accidentally become undone but also quick-release enough to come undone if the harness becomes snagged on a fence or shrub.

You also want something that is easy for you to open and close to make the process stress-free for you both. Many have one or two quick release plastic buckles. Make sure the buckles are sturdy and on the top or sides where you can see them easily. And check their condition regularly since breakage is common when they’re used frequently.

Other harnesses rely on secure and adjustable hook-and-loop closures. While most hook-and-loop can be super sturdy, some can become less effective over repeated use and if fur gets in the closure. So keep the hook-and-loop free of hair and debris for optimal performance.

Several of the best harnesses use a dual system of hook-and-loop and a plastic buckle, like the Little Kitty Co. Step-in Harness and the Rabbitgoo Harnesses . These offer peace of mind and added safety.

To determine your cat’s harness size, you’ll need use two key measurements: neck circumference and chest girth. Using a flexible measuring tape (the kind a tailor uses), take these two measurements sung to the cat’s body. Measure the cat’s chest girth right behind the front legs. If you have a particularly fluffy cat, you’ll want to gently press their fur. Then check these numbers against the manufacturers’ size guide, and see if they have any sizing additional tips specific to their product.

It takes lots of patience to get a cat used to a harness, so introduce it slowly in a comfortable and calm environment. Galaxy says you want to establish a strong a positive association between the harness and the treat. He recommends picking a particularly special treat to use only when training.

Start by putting the harness on and adjusting the fit. “It’s OK for them to do the falling over on their side thing, or backing up out of it,” he says. “Try to keep it on them for at least five minutes before you take it off and give them their treat.” Don’t attach the leash at first. “It’s another source of weight, it’s another weird feeling on their back.”

In your next sessions, slowly increase the amount of time your cat has the harness on. “The second step is taking a step,” says Galaxy. “You want them to start feeling it and feeling what it’s like to walk in this thing. That’s when you use your treat again.” Once your cat is comfortable wearing the harness by itself, then introduce the leash inside.

Once your cat is comfortable walking around the house while wearing both the harness and the leash, you’re ready to venture out into the world.

Galaxy says it’s very important to keep in mind that going outside is not suited for every cat. If you get to the point where your cat is comfortable with the harness and leash, but once outside is frozen or showing signs of distress, don’t force it. Yes, some cat owners have success using harnesses marketed for small dogs on their cats. “I have a cat that’s bigger than a dog, and one of the dog vests fits her better,” says Jackson Galaxy. “But you’ve got to be very careful.”

He explains that dog harnesses may have larger leg openings than those designed for cats: “If they can get a leg out, it’s not even a matter of them escaping, it’s a matter of them hurting themselves if they freak out.”

Overall I have really enjoyed my experience with Travel Cat, I had browsed their website before but never purchased anything. The navigator backpack

This is my 3rd backpack I’ve bought for all my cats

"Fat Cat" Backpack For The Win!

I have the "Fat Cat" Backpack for my 13 lbs cat Maverick and it's purrfect for him! There's not many cat backpacks on the market big enough for cats over 10 lbs. but this one is. He's comfortable inside it, it retains it's shape, and it's easy to use. I've had mine for about 5 years now and it still looks almost brand new. I highly recommend this backpack for the larger kitties out there!

The Navigator and The Boop Coop

We bought The Navigator and The Boop Coop. Both really well made products. As soon as you open them you can tell that it’s been made well and they’re both very sturdy. The navigator is great for carrying one of our cats on a walk, and the Boop Coop is perfect for vet trips (so our two boys can stay together for moral support). I found it so hard to find a carrier that fits two cats, but the Boop Coop is the perfect fit. It’s also nice and tall, which gives them enough space to sit up if they want to. It also has attachments for their harnesses. We’ve even had comments on how good it looks in the vet waiting room!

Great Company and Great Products

I have a couple of products I've bought from them ranging from their harnesses to backpacks to collars. I have also talked to their customer support on a couple items and they've been nothing but informative and helpful. Their products are great quality and have been able to handle my cats even biting at them when they first started wearing them. The backpack I have that can hold two cats has many wonderful features that I've enjoyed for hiking or even taking them to the vet. customer service goes above and beyond with a quick and courteous response. they were able to solve my issue extremely conveniently leaving me very satisfied with the results. the staff truly seems to love and care about cats. the harnesses are superior to all other harnesses i’ve tried. definitely worth the money to make sure your kitty is comfortable and secured in. the backpack… i have the airy outdoors backpack for camping/hiking and let me tell you my cat LOVES it. he uses it in the car, the house, stores, on walks, camping, everything. i’ve never used to sideways as a carrier to the vet but the vet staff seems to like the backpack better as well! he doesn’t get jerked around as much as in a side carrier. he loves to be strapped in and have the back screen fully open to he can look out at everything. 10/10 would recommend for anyone wanting to take their fur babies out safely and comfortably! 🧡 not to mention, they partnered with jackson galaxy so they must have his seal of approval!

Navigator review

I've been using the navigator cat backpack for a week now and both myself and my cat are loving it. Storage for a couple water bottles (or coffee and water 🙂). More storage on the other side and inside. I also found a good spot to mount an action camera for in bag footage of our travels. My 5 month old kitten Naya did manage to jump out and dangle one or twice from her harness but I think she's learned already not to do that. With both the top and front mesh open Naya gets to look at the world and sometimes reach out and touch things. The only minor issue is inside leash length. I wish the two leashes were in different spots (one at the top and one at bottom of inside the bag). Just so you have more variation with leash lengths. I also have the fat cat backpack but have yet to try it. Will probably be hard to decide between the two on which one to keep.

BEWARE: NO MONEY BACK

I purchased several cat harnesses after reading lots of reviews, but when they came and we tried them on it wasn't a good fit. I went to make a return and get my money back only to find out this company doesn't offer true returns, only store credit. Not to mention I accidently ordered two sets of their cat beds. So now I'm stuck with hundreds of dollars of store credit that I don't know if I'll be using. It's absolutely ridiculous.

Khan can get out of most harnesses

Khan can get out of most harnesses we have tried. I had to put 2 different kinds on him so he couldn’t easily escape. This one is light enough for our 90 degree weather yet he hasn’t tried to get out of it!

Ordered a back ordered 150$ backpack

Ordered a back ordered 150$ backpack. Waited 3 months to get it. Well fedex delivered the backpack to the wrong house and I know because they took a pic of the wrong porch. Called fedex they said they can't do anything and to get ahold of the shipper to file a claim. Its been 3 weeks I've messaged them multiple times to get it resolved. There not answering me so I guess I'm screwed out of 150$ I wouldn't recommend anybody ordering from this place there a scam.

I have a very bad feeling about this company. Placed an order on August 2nd and was sent a tracking number and it has still not been tendered to FedEx. And I am obligated to Afterpay because I used them to pay and if I don't receive it I will be messed up all the way around because Afterpay doesn't fully refund. Love the Fat Cat Backpacks!

We have been customers of Travel Cat backpacks for many years. Quite surprised to read all these negative reviews as we have had only positive interactions with the company. We currently own a couple of Fat cat backpacks. They are a great size for our cats who are about 10lbs. There is plenty of room inside, with great ventilation. Our backpacks have traveled with us on hikes, boats, cars, canoes, floats etc. The quality is great as they have withstood some rough handling. As with any product, you need to be mindful or how you use it. The bubble is plastic so obviously if you hit it against something hard, it will crack... our bubble has some scratches from our many travels but is yet to see any major damage. The company is great with exceptional customer service. They are kind, receptive and helpful. We would highly recommend the fat cat backpack. It's is a very safe travel companion of your kitties.

While Simpson uses a 4-foot leash on her adventure kitty Maeby, Calder pointed out that some cats may be less anxious on a longer leash that provides them more freedom. Olewski Klassen sometimes uses a retractable leash with her kitty Gibson, but says that many cat explorers don't like using them because the long tether makes it harder to keep your cat safe.

Fit is important in a cat harness. If it's too loose, a determined kitty can wiggle free. If it's too tight, it may rub uncomfortably or restrict movement.

Simpson recommends measuring your cat before purchasing a harness. Most manufacturers provide measurements for both the circumference of the neck and the circumference of the chest. Wrap a flexible measuring tape around the widest part of your cat's neck just above the shoulders and the widest part of their chest just behind the front legs, then compare the figures with the available options. If your cat falls in between sizes, go with the larger one.

Gradually expose them to the outdoors.

Either during the period that you introduce your cat to the harness and leash or after they are comfortable with it, you can gradually expose them to the outdoors. Introducing a cat to a harness isn’t quite as simple as a collar and lead on dogs. As those of us who own a cat know, felines aren’t renowned for their amenable acceptance of new things. So, while taking your cat for a walk can work wonders for their waistline and help prevent boredom, you should never try to force a cat to use a harness. This may cause stress for a cat – and result in injury for you!

What sort of harness should i choose for my cat.

You might think that you can just buy a collar and lead for your cat that’s a smaller version of the type worn by dogs. However, this isn’t a great option for a feline. A collar and lead puts a lot of strain on a cat’s neck. In addition, your cat could easily slip its head out of a collar, which could be a disaster when you’re out and about.

For safety and comfort, you’re better opting for a full harness that fits around your cat’s body, and there are two main types available. An H-style harness (so named because the pieces of the harness form a letter “H” on a cat’s back) is often preferred by cats, since there’s less material in contact with their bodies; but these aren’t as secure as vest-style harnesses. The latter is like a fitted coat that wraps right around the cat’s body, and doesn’t create pressure points in specific areas, so won’t rub or dig into your cat’s back or belly. Regardless of which of the two styles you prefer, your choice may well depend on which style of harness your cat is prepared to tolerate!

You should also consider your cat’s personality when making your choice of cat harness. If your feline is super-confident then an H-style harness may be enough for them. But if they’re nervous or prone to wriggling then a vest-style option will prove more secure. You can also buy escape-proof harnesses – although do note that nothing can be guaranteed as be so when it comes to cats. Always test a harness indoors first, and make sure you measure your cat and follow the size guide to achieve the best fit possible.

How do I train my cat to use a harness?

First and foremost: don’t rush things with your cat. You can repeat these steps as often as needed.

Place the harness in your bed for a couple of days to give it a familiar smell or, if you don’t fancy sleeping with it, rub a cloth round your cat’s cheeks and transfer their scent onto the harness. The key is to ensure that it doesn’t smell of packaging or a shop.

Place your cat’s favourite treats on the floor in front of your cat. While they’re eating, position the harness on their back. Do not attempt to do it up at this point; just get your cat used to having it on. If this freaks out your cat, hold the harness up so the cat can see it and feed them treats through the harness. You want them to associate it with good things.

Once your cat is relaxed with the harness on its back, try doing up the straps. Start with the neck, then add the chest. If the harness has a buckle around the neck, do this up last. Take the harness straight off if your cat shows signs of discomfort or is struggling to get out of it. You can try again on another day.

When your cat is comfortable with the harness on, let them walk around indoors with it on; here, you can also check that they can’t wriggle out of it.

Finally, when your cat is comfortable with the harness, you can attach the lead and carry them outside. The hope is that all the new sights and smells will distract them from the fact they’re wearing a harness.

Be aware that some cats may never get used to a harness. Don’t judge your cat or yourself too harshly if this is the case.
