Best time to visit australia.

Being such a large place, Australia has a wide range of climates, so all year round, there is somewhere great to visit. 

Summer (December to February) can get very hot but is perfect for beach-going and other outdoor activities. In the far north, it is also the wet season, which can get quite humid, and some beaches may be closed due to jellyfish or 'stingers'.

Winter (June to August) is pleasant and dry in the north but can get quite cold in the south, especially in Tasmania and Victoria, where snowfall is common.

Spring and autumn are great times to visit Australia as the weather is milder but still warm enough for swimming in northern areas. 

Regardless of daytime temperatures, nights can get very cold in the desert areas of Central and Western Australia, so prepare accordingly.

The main school holiday period is from Christmas to late January and is considered the peak travel time within Australia; expect popular tourist spots to be crowded during this time.

From large malls and boutique shopping strips to weekend arts and crafts markets and vintage shops, Australia is a top place to shop. Shopping in Australia may not be cheap, but there are plenty of unique finds and original souvenirs to bring home. Before heading home, check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to import certain items back into your home country. New Zealand, for example, has strict quarantine laws.

Geography and environment

The continent of Australia is known for being one of the flattest, hottest, and driest places on earth, but despite this, there is an astounding variety of terrains and environments on this island nation. Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

What's the weather like in Australia?

The weather in Australia varies depending on where in the country you are. For example, winter in Victoria and Tasmania tends to be very cold (around the 50 °F -60 °F mark), whereas, if you head further north to the Northern Territory and Queensland, temperatures in the winter months are much nicer (usually around 65 °F -77 °F ).

This pattern also applies to summer, where the southern states tend to experience lower temperatures (but still warm), while the northern and western states are warmer, with temperatures reaching as high as 100 °F +.

Do I need a visa to travel to Australia?

All foreign nationals require a visa to enter Australia – excluding passport holders from  New Zealand  who can enter Australia without a visa.

Passport holders from 34 countries are eligible to apply for the Electronic Travel Authority (ETA/601), which permits multiple entry to Australia for up to three months within a 12-month period. 

All other foreign nationals will need to apply for a visitor visa (600). This permits stays of up to 12 months with the option to apply for single or multiple entry.

Is tipping customary in Australia?

Tipping isn’t mandatory in Australia; however, rounding up the bill or leaving spare change is common practice. Restaurant staff, taxi drivers and other service workers welcome tips for good service.

What is the internet access like in Australia?

Internet access is widely available in most parts of Australia, with internet cafes and Wi-Fi hot spots commonly found in urban areas. Please note that internet access won’t be available in Outback and remote areas.

Can I use my cell phone while in Australia?

Cell phone coverage is excellent in most parts of Australia, especially in large cities and urban areas. Remote, rural and mountainous places may have limited to no coverage, so be aware of this before venturing away from the city. Ensure global roaming is activated before leaving your home country if you want to use your cell phone, or you can purchase a sim card when you arrive. The provider that will have coverage in the majority of Australia is Telstra, secondly Optus and then Vodafone. A hot tip – when you are in remote areas and don’t have cell phone signal, turn your phone to flight mode which will conserve battery and prevent your phone from using data trying to search for internet signal.

What are the toilets like in Australia?

Western-style flushable toilets are the norm in Australia, and many of our campsites have proper facilities with flushing toilets. In remote areas such as the Kimberley, there is no established plumbing and therefore we have installed ‘drop toilets’. Some campsites we use are managed by the National Parks and have either eco-toilets or drop toilets, most of which are maintained regularly.

Can I drink the water in Australia?

Drinking water from taps in Australia is considered safe, unless otherwise marked. For environmental reasons, try to use a refillable water bottle rather than buying bottled water.

Are credit cards accepted widely in Australia?

Credit cards are widely accepted by shops, restaurants and cafes in Australia. Smaller establishments may only accept cash or require a minimum purchase for credit card use, so be sure to carry enough cash for smaller purchases.

What is ATM access like in Australia?

ATMs are commonly found in large cities and regional towns in Australia. ATM access will be very limited in remote areas so be aware of this before heading into national parks or the Outback.

Who are the First Nations people of Australia?

There are two distinct groups of First Nations peoples in Australia - Aboriginal Australians and Torres Strait Islander people - both of which have lived on this land for centuries. While there are only two Indigenous groups, there's actually a wide range of language and location communities that are made up of Aboriginal Australians and Torres Strait Islander people including the Adnyamathanha people of the Flinders Ranges (Aboriginal Australians) and the Badu people from the Near Western Group (Torres Strait Islander people).

Australia is a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers thanks to its anti-discrimination laws, diverse population and welcoming culture. There are many LGBTQIA+ friendly neighborhoods and establishments across the country, as well as a wide variety of Pride events. 

What's the transport like in Australia?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators and are heaps more fun. Depending on which trip you're on while in Australia, you may even find yourself traveling overland.

Our lodge accommodation is located outside major cities, such as near the entrance to a National Park, and has its own amenities such as a restaurant or dining room. Lodges are comfortable places to stay and offer a good night's rest after a day spent exploring the natural beauty of Australia. 

Permanent Tented Campsite

There's no need to put up your tent when you spend the night in a Permanent Tented Campsite. You'll have a roof over your head and will bunk down on sleeper mats on the ground or stretcher (camp) beds, with access to a toilet/shower block. Tent sizes can vary depending on the trip you're on and the location you're visiting. Some of our permanent tented campsites are a little bit fancy, others are very simple. Sometimes you'll be sharing a tent with others in your group. 

Our bush camping experiences are as diverse as Australia itself. Some offer swag camping under cover or under the twinkling stars. You could be sleeping in a tent with access to simple toilet or shower amenities or you might not have access to a shower at all. However, the scenery at these magical spots makes it worth going without a bath for a day or so. Sometimes a trip has participatory camping where everyone pitches in to help. Other times, a staff member is on hand to look after things like cooking. 

We provide accommodation at a wide variety of hotels around Australia. Some are quite upmarket, others less so, but all of them offer a comfortable stay and ensuite facilities. 

We use hostels on some trips which means your bed could be in a twin room or a shared dorm room. Some of these rooms come with their own facilities while others have share facilities.

This PCF  can be engaged for any individual/Company/Business/Government department or any other entity that requires the professional expertise, experience, contacts and forensic researching of Max Najar to assist or advise. These fees are payable in advance via a negotiated initial deposit and thereafter Invoiced to be paid as may be required and may have other costs or fees payable by the engaged party(ies)  for other entities to support the case in hand. Any additional-if any costs-will always be advised prior to any commitment being made and added to the PCF costs required.  Unlike other professions, an estimation of costs will be provided prior to any required case (“challenge”) PCF being agreed upon between all relevant parties. Fees are non-refundable but tax deductible in most cases.

For all clients , “PRIORITY PORTFOLIO TRAVEL” ™© excels in methodical planning of Itineraries, mature advice from Travel Industry accredited professionals who use their expansive toolkit of skills, experience and training to efficiently and effectively complete a simple travel booking or spend extra time to construct complex but chronologically logical travel itineraries, whilst giving clients relevant travel options.

The PPT “SUCCESS FEE”:   PPT travel, led by Max Najar was instigated in 1990. This “ Success Fee” is designed on the basis that a client can forward  a detailed travel component that requires a quote to be provided by PPT or Axis Travel Centre which we regard as a “challenge”.

The travel component that a client request that suits the “” Success Fee” concept should be of high financial or value-added value to be a worthwhile “challenge” for all parties, especially as our agency will invest time, research, checking, availability and suitability in each travel component.

After consideration by PPT or Axis Travel Centre, a response will be forwarded to either accept or deny this challenge with an estimation from us as to the final cost involved that we may be able to secure of the travel component(s) to be quoted against plus a simple “ Success Fee”.

This fee is payable in advance of us performing any work, planning, research, or bookings but is fully refundable should we not succeed in this “challenge”:

We have noted that in many cases the additional value-added travel items or services that we can offer in return outweighs the initial travel component cost to be quoted against, but the client(s) will always have the final say in acceptance or not .

To compliment this “challenge” the quoted agency “” Success Fee” is payable in addition to the final travel component cost forwarded. We will freely quote any “ Success Fee” after we receive the details of what we are quoting against that are bonafide and verifiable.  This fee is set at a minimum of $110 per travel component challenge to a maximum of $3,000 per file, not per person. A file is one booking with as many as 7 persons per booking file on exact same Flights/Cruise/Package/Tour/Accommodation stay or Vehicle rental  and not via separate bookings.

EXAMPLE 1: AIRLINE QUOTE: If we are asked to provide a quote against a Business Class Airticket for 2 persons and the fare is $11,000 pp, equal to $22,000 and we can secure same flights/routes/dats for $8,000 pp , being $16,000,- a client saving of $6,000 we will request a “ Success Fee” of $1,500 in addition to the $8,000 fare payable per person with conditions/fees applicable. We prefer to focus on exact same data as best we can and may also provide alternative Airlines etc if that is what client requests.

EXAMPLE 2: CRUISE QUOTE: If we are asked to provide a quote against a Cruise cabin , as maybe an oceanview cabin quoted by client to us at $5,000 for 2 persons and we can secure a similar cabin on same deck or better, with better views and positioning for $5,400 in a superior location, better positioning with $300 onboard spending money included, a “ Success Fee” of  $220 will be levied and payable, noting client acceptance of the value-added items against costs were better value.

EXAMPLE 3: HOTEL or RESORT STAY: If an accommodation cost is required and a quote in the same Hotel or Resort or a similar standard and location is requested by client that they quoted us at $6,000 for the entire stay period room, we would apply a $110 “ Success Fee” per accommodation booking stay if we were to deliver the same hotel or resort room or a client accepted similar place of stay  with more inclusions such as a larger room size, better refurbished quality beddings, larger bathroom, Club floor facility, included breakfasts, gym inclusions, room upgrades, free car parking or any other value added item that is accepted by client. The $6,000 would be payable plus the $110 “ Success Fee” towards exact same place of stay or a similar client accepted place of stay as exampled above.

If accepted by clients(s) , we will secure what was promised at the price we have quoted and/or the extra value-added items or services that we can secure but only after the “ Success Fee” is paid that remains non-refundable and added to the travel component cost.

It is encumbered and the full responsibility of  clients and not our Agency to check the conditions, availability and risks taken on what we may be asked to quote against as many travel “deals’ have very strict conditions and fees with limited availability let alone clients may be risking their monies, hoping to receive quality support mechanisms with possible manipulation or the compromising of their card and/or passport and/or personal data with other levels of risks.

Our challenge will be not only to exceed what is expected in this “ Success Fee”  but to also default in us only  entrusting accredited suppliers that we have dedicated client travel towards. We do all we can to be the solo human contact point and minimize clients risks.

Maps of the April 2024 Total Solar Eclipse

On April 8, the moon will slip between the Earth and the sun, casting a shadow across a swath of North America: a total solar eclipse.

By cosmic coincidence, the moon and the sun appear roughly the same size in the sky. When the moon blocks the glare of the sun, the sun’s outer atmosphere, or corona, will be briefly visible.

Below are several maps of the eclipse’s path as well as images of what you might experience during the event.

Where Can I See the Total Eclipse?

The eclipse will begin at sunrise over the Pacific Ocean, then cut through Mexico and cross the United States from Texas to Maine. Most of North America will see a partial eclipse, but viewers within the deepest shadow — a band sliding from Mazatlán, Mexico, to the Newfoundland coast near Gander, Canada — will experience a total solar eclipse.

Viewers inside the path of the total eclipse may notice a drop in temperature , a lull or shift in the wind , the appearance of bright planets in the sky, and the quieting of birds and other wildlife.

Many cities lie inside the path of the total eclipse, as shown below, the width of which varies from 108 miles to 122 miles.

If the sky is clear, viewers in the path of the total eclipse should see a “diamond ring” effect a few seconds before and after the total eclipse, as the edge of the sun slips in and out of view.

The sun’s outer atmosphere, or corona, is normally hidden by the sun’s glare. These tendrils and sheets of gas, heated to a million degrees Fahrenheit or more, are in constant motion and shaped by the sun’s swirling magnetic field.

The sun is relatively active this year and is nearing the expected peak of its 11-year solar cycle . Researchers at Predictive Science are using data about the sun’s magnetic field to predict and model a dramatic corona for the April eclipse.

What Colors Should I Wear?

As the sky darkens, light-sensitive cells in human eyes become more sensitive to blue and green hues than to reds and oranges. This shift in color perception is known as the Purkinje effect , after a 19th-century Czech scientist, and is typically seen at twilight.

To take advantage of the Purkinje effect, wear green clothes or a contrasting combination of greens and reds. Blue-green colors (shorter wavelengths) will appear brighter, while red colors (longer wavelengths) will appear to recede into the darkness.

What If I Miss It?

The next two total solar eclipses in the United States won’t occur until 2044 and 2045 . But eclipse chasers might catch one in 2026 in Greenland, Iceland and Spain; 2027 along the coast of Northern Africa; 2028 in Australia and New Zealand; or 2030 across Southern Africa and Australia.
