The best travel coffee presses for when you really need caffeine

Lens, Camera lens, Lens cap, Product, Camera accessory, Cameras & optics, Teleconverter, Photography, Optical instrument,

If you're particular about your coffee cup this travel press can be placed on top of  your favourite mug and freshly pressed coffee is filtered directly into it.

Your cup has to be placed on a sturdy surface and depending on the type of mug used you have to be careful it’s not overfilled, but on the other hand the AeroPress is very simple to use.

Presse by Bobble

Product, Cylinder, Filter, Silver, Vacuum flask, Steel, Drinkware, Metal,

In three minutes you can have great tasting coffee which stays hot for a long time.

In fact, out of the three travel presses we tested, this one lost the least heat within the hour – 13.2 degrees.

It is very simple to use and the plunger glides down with no issues. The only drawback is the rubber lid which feels a bit flimsy and features three small holes, which results in some leakage if not held upright, which could pose an issue if being used on your daily commute.

Presse by Bobble , £27.99

Bodum travel press

The Bodum travel press was very simple and easy to use, it's also beautifully designed.

We found that the plunger wasn’t too stiff and it pushed down effortlessly, producing great coffee each time we tested.

Over the hour, the cup lost about 15 degrees, which was the most heat lost out of all the three travel presses we tested.

Bodum Travel Press , £15

Mini Presso GR

This is another travel press which filters coffee directly into a mug, however this comes with a handy attached travel cup large enough for a barista style expresso.

To filter the coffee six pumps are needed, then to fill a full cup it took 21 pumps.

The pump itself is quite stiff so both hands are needed to operate, so a sturdy surface for your cup is necessary.

Also, we found the press to be quite fiddly as it comes with a lot of parts to screw on and off.

Mini Presso GR , £47.99

Espro Coffee Travel Press

This is a beautifully designed travel press that is not only stylish but also produces a good brew.

Yet again, the concept is simple, however the plunger is a little stiffer to push down than others.

Also, the lid is a little difficult to remove if it is over tightened and coffee can gather in the lid, which can result in spillage.

Espro Coffee Travel Press , £32.50

Cafflano Klassic

This portable grinder creates freshly ground coffee by grinding down coffee beans using the hand wound mill, hot water is then poured out of the drip kettle into the filter, which drips out fresh coffee straight into the insulated mug.

The process is simple and the idea is innovative. However, the grinder isn’t as smooth at grinding down the beans as expected and it would have been beneficial if there was the addition of a handle to grip onto, as the combination of holding onto the mug and the mill makes for a slight hand ache.

Also, the lid does not screw on the mug, it is just placed on top, and there is no sipping hole which does pose some leakage issues if using it on the go.

Cafflano Klassic , £79.99

Cafflano Kompact

The Cafflano Kompact is a travel coffee press which can either be placed on a mug and pushed or held and squeezed.

It comes in a handy hard case which makes it very convenient for travelling.

It is very straightforward to use and has been designed with convenience in mind. This works best when the mug is placed on a sturdy surface to avoid any spillages or accidents.

Q&a's (4), filters 1 answer.

Wondering if the filter sizes are the same between original and go? Would like something akin to the Able Disk reusable filter rather than paper, but have no idea if the size is right for Go?

G'day Tyson, The Aeropress & Aeropress Go have exactly the same end cap, so the stainless steel reusable disk will work with both. Hope that helps!

Best coffee grind 1 answer

Hey there Ben What's the best coffee grind to use? Coarser or finer grind?

The official word from Aeropress is to use an Espresso grind, which is generally fairly fine, this is best suited to the standard press method. Generally, with the inversion method, you'd use a Medium-Fine or Medium grind and leave it to brew for a few minutes before pressing. Personally, I use the inversion method with a Medium-Fine grind most of the time.

Does it makes less than the original? 1 answer

Does this new version have a smaller capacity than the original? ie does it hold less hot water?

Yes the Aeropress Go has a slightly smaller capacity, it has three quarters of the capacity, and goes to the number 3 on the chamber, the original goes up to the number 4.

Why is the lady pouring water the other way? Is it recommended 1 answer

I am curious to know why in the picture the lady is pouring the water the other way.

She is making coffee using the 'inverted' method, Sushovan. This is a commonly used method but Aeropress don't recommend it as the unit becomes top-heavy and there is an increased risk of spilling hot water.

You can use this inverted method if you have a stable spot to stand the unit, and using this method can make a stronger coffee as the water does not immediately start to filter through. Instead, you are getting full immersion of the coffee grounds for as long as you want, so you can make a strong brew.

The engineers at Espro have broken another record with the Espro Ultralight FrenchPress. Weighing just 210g and featuring double stainless steel walls, dual filters, and the ability to make three distinct drinks, it’s the perfect fit for the lightest of coffee-loving travellers.

The Ultralight’s main distinction is the 210g weight, making it the lightest double-walled, insulated tumbler and coffee brewer in the world. It’s a no-brainer for super space savers and minimalist packers. But the light weight doesn’t mean it’s low on features—in fact, it’s a powerful 3-in-1 brewer and can hold up to 470ml of coffee!

French Press Coffee

The dual filtration system allows you to brew rich frenchpress coffee without having to deal with the usual grit at the bottom of the mug. And when you press down, the brewing stops completely, so the last sip tastes just like the first and you don’t have to worry about over extraction.

Pour Over Style Coffee

Add in an Espro paper filter to make a cleaner, brighter cup of pour over style coffee. It’s still rich and crisp, but lacks that heavy body and makes for a smoother mug.

Loose Leaf Tea

Drop in your favorite loose leaf tea and brew like normal. Once you press down the filter, the tea leaves become separated entirely, so even if the water’s still hot, the leaves won’t keep extracting.

The leak-proof lid adds another layer of security, since you don’t have to worry about drips or spills when the Ultralight is on its side (or upside down). And thanks to the double stainless steel walls, your coffee can stay hot for hours (or iced coffee cold for hours).  *Please note the Tea Filter is sold separately and not included.

Espro Ultralight French Press Features

World’s Lightest Insulated Tumbler — No travel mug or brewer competes with the Ultralight’s 210g weight, making it the world’s lightest’.

3-In-1 Travel Brewer — Brews delicious french press coffee, pour over style coffee with when you add a paper filter, or loose leaf tea.

Dual Filtration — Fine double filters ensure there’s no grit in your coffee and stop the brewing completely so that the first sip tastes just like the last one.

Leak-Proof Lid — Toss it in your bag without fear of drips or spills.

Double-Walled Design — Stainless steel insulated walls keep your coffee hot or your iced coffee cold for hours.

This product includes:

  • 1 x Espro Ultralight French Press

Don’t have time to read my entire portable coffee maker travel guide and just want to hear my recommendation?

When Is A Travel Coffee Machine Handy?

If you’re reading this guide, no doubt you’ve found yourself in plenty of situations where there was no coffee shop for miles and you wished you had a small portable coffee pot on hand so you could brew yourself a cuppa.

We mentioned going on holidays in the intro as being the prime example of when a portable coffee brewer comes in handy. But the reality is if you had one there are oodles of situations you could use it for.

Here are some situations where a portable all in one coffee maker would be perfect :

As mentioned holidays are the ideal time. You’re away from home and hotels and AirBnBs don’t always provide a coffee machine. A small travel coffee maker for hotel trips would be great.

Camping trips – with the best portable coffee maker for camping you’ll no longer have to endure instant coffee or the mediocre coffee the camp kiosk sells.

If the boss is too stingy to put a quality coffee machine in the office, then you can have great coffee all day long in the office.

Perhaps you’re always on the go for work, so having a portable coffee maker will mean you’ll never have to forgo a good cuppa again.

For backpacking or road trips, having your own coffee maker is the best start to the day.

Below I cover some considerations when choosing the best travel coffee machine, but if you know what you need, click here to skip straight to the reviews .

Things To Consider When Buying The Best Travel Coffee Maker

These days there are some excellent options on the market when it comes to the best compact coffee maker for travel.

However, in order to purchase something perfect for you, it is recommended that you consider the following factors.

Type of Coffee Maker

We all have our favourite coffee brewing method and you don’t need to settle even when it comes to a portable coffee maker.

No matter what your brewing method preference, there is the perfect type of coffee maker for you.

Let’s briefly look at the different types of portable coffee makers available:

For those that want café / barista style coffee even while out and about you’ll want to look at a portable espresso coffee maker.

Similar to a full size espresso machine , the best travel espresso maker brews coffee by forcing a small amount of hot water through finely ground coffee.

While they won’t work as well as their full size counterparts – they do a pretty good job even with no electricity.

An immersion brewer is great when away from home.  As the same suggests, an immersion brewer works by submerging the coffee grounds completely in water.

Once the coffee is ready, it is poured through a filter to remove the grounds from the coffee.

The downside with immersion brewers is they do tend to be a little on the large size in terms of portable coffee brewers.

Travel Coffee Press on boot of car

French Press

Similar to an immersion brewer, a french press portable coffee maker has the coffee grounds totally submerged in the water.

The main difference is when the coffee is ready, the plunger is pushed through the coffee and the coffee is poured through the filter in the plunger to ensure the grounds don’t reach your mug.

French press coffee makers are great for car camping, caravans and RVs.

Capsule/Pod

Another great option for a travel coffee maker is a portable pod coffee machine.  In fact, some standard size pod machines are so small you could probably take them with you when you go away on holidays.

However, if you want something super compact, there are some great portable pod coffee maker options on the market.

Like their full size counterparts, a portable capsule coffee maker works by way of premade or reusable pods or capsules which are prefilled with just the right amount of ground coffee.

All you need to do is pop them into the machine, press a button or two and the machine takes care of the rest.

A stovetop coffee maker also called a Moka pot, is a method of brewing coffee on the stovetop.  The way a stovetop coffee maker works is by passing boiling water pressurised by steam through the ground coffee.

While there aren’t really any specific travel stovetop coffee makers around, a standard stovetop makes a good portable coffee maker. They are reasonably compact if you get a small one and they are lightweight too.

You’ll just need access to a stovetop though which is ideal if you’re camping or stay in self contained apartments or hotel rooms.

I have a Bialetti moka pot packed in my camper trailer and it is my go to camping coffee maker for road trips in the camper.

Bialetti moka pot on camp stove next to collapsible kettle and coffee mug.

There are cold brew coffee makers on the market, but most immersion or french press coffee plungers can work great for a cold brew coffee too.

Just use cold water instead of water and give the coffee grounds longer to brew.

Just as when you buy a coffee maker for home, when you’re buying one for taking away with you, you’ll need to give some thought to how much coffee you plan on drinking at any given time.

Plus consider how many people are drinking coffee at the same time.

Most portable coffee makers just brew a single serve at the one time. However, it is possible to get larger portable coffee brewers.

Just keep in mind the larger it is, the more difficult it will be to pack. Often just going for a portable single serve coffee maker is best if you can accept you’ll need to brew coffee multiple times.  Alternatively buy each coffee drinker their own.

While the weight of a coffee maker is never usually that important it is super important when it comes to a travel coffee maker.

This is particularly true if you want to take your coffee maker on a plane with you.  Or even for those that want a portable coffee maker in their caravan or camper trailer and are limited by how much weight they can tow.

To help you make the best choice for you when it comes to choosing a portable travel coffee maker we’ve included the weights of each of the coffee makers reviewed in this guide in the table at the beginning of the article.

small portable coffee maker aeropress

As mentioned above, everyone has a preference when it comes to how they like their coffee brewed.  As you can see from the different types of portable coffee makers available, there really is no need to compromise when it comes to your brewing preference.

So if you like an espresso each morning to get you started – go for the best portable espresso machine.  Likewise, if you’re more of a drip coffee drinker – then look for the best compact drip coffee maker.

Ease to Clean

While having a coffee maker that is easy to clean is important at home, it’s even more critical while you’re away from your home.  Chances are you won’t have access to a dishwasher or any cleaning tools so the easier to clean the better.

Look for portable coffee makers with minimum parts, without any tiny crevices where grounds or coffee can get stuck and dishwasher safe parts are best.

Even if you don’t have a dishwasher while you’re away at least, you can still give it a proper clean in the dishwasher when you get home.

All the portable coffee brewers on our list are simple to rinse and clean on the go.

Best for: Whether you’re looking for the best camp coffee maker or even just the best office coffee maker – because you’re not keen on what the boss likes to drink – this incredibly compact and affordable AeroPress is definitely worth checking out.

Best for: If you’re an espresso drinker and like the idea of using the machine as either a portable coffee capsule machine or using your favourite ground coffee beans, the Staresso manual coffee machine is certainly a great option to consider.

This portable one cup coffee maker is the perfect solution for people on the go.

5. Roccar Paperless Pour Over Kit Review

Best hiking coffee maker

Roccar Pour Over Coffee Dripper, Reusable Stainless Steel Pour Over Coffee Filter, Slow Drip Black Coffee Maker With Cup Stand and Brush, For Chemex and Most Coffee Pot, Tumbler, Mug

  • Dimensions : 10 x 10.5 x 13 cm
  • Weight : 150g
  • Coffee Type: Pour Over
  • Capacity : 1-4 cups

The Roccar Paperless Pour Over Kit is a top rated product. It is lightweight and very cheap so perfect for those not wanting to spend a small fortune on their portable coffee maker.

This portable pour over coffee maker is also capable of making 1-4 cups at any given time which is great if travelling with other coffee drinkers.

The Roccar is a stainless steel mesh coffee cone and stand that can be placed on top of a mug or even a larger carafe.  Given it’s made with stainless steel, it’s a durable little unit and will withstand a few knocks and bumps which can be expected when travelling.

The filter is made of a double layer of fine stainless steel mesh and is blockage resistant to ensure only full flavoured coffee is passed through and bean grinds stay put.

Plus the heat resistant silicone rings ensure the filter stays firmly put and reduces the risk of any accidental spills or burns.

The Roccar portable drip coffee maker is super easy to use with the pour over method .  All you need to do is add ground coffee, wet the coffee and wait while it blooms, then slowly pour the water through until you have your desired amount of coffee.

This portable coffee dripper is even easier to clean, just requiring a quick rinse, plus its dishwasher safe too.

  • Lightweight and portable
  • Reusable filter – no paper waste
  • An awkward shape for packing in a bag

Best for: If the pour over method is your brewing preference then this stainless steel Roccar filter is the ideal choice.  Cheap and lightweight – this portable filter coffee maker is perfect if you’re after the best pour over coffee maker for camping or while on the road.

6. Bialetti Moka Express Review

Best Camp Coffee Maker

Bialetti 1164 Moka Express Coffee Maker, 4 Cup, Aluminum, CM435

  • Dimensions : 15 x 20 x 25 cm
  • Weight : 580g
  • Capacity : 4 cups

If you’re looking for a stovetop coffee maker for camping or for the times you have access to a stovetop in an apartment, then the Bialetti Moka Express is another one to consider.

While not as compact as some of the others listed in these reviews, the Bialetti is perfect when there are multiple coffee drinkers.

The Bialetti brews rich, authentic Italian espresso in minutes!  The way it works is you add water to the bottom section and then ground coffee to the filter in the middle.  Then put the unit on the stovetop.

Once the water starts to boil, the coffee will begin to move into the top pot.  Once the pot is full, give your coffee a quick stir before it is ready for drinking.

Of course, you will need access to a stovetop with the Bialetti – so do keep that in mind.

However, if you camp with a little stovetop or tend to stay in self contained hotel rooms, this shouldn’t be a problem. The standard Moka Express isn’t compatible with induction stovetops, but there are models that are compatible.

The good thing about the Bialetti is you can choose your size as it comes in a 2, 4, 6, 12 or 18 cup – although probably 4 or 6 is best for those after a portable coffee maker.

Made from aluminium, these coffee makers are lightweight and durable, so they are a good option for putting in your suitcase.  Plus they are easy to clean in hot soapy water.

  • Espresso like coffee strength
  • Robust and easy to clean
  • Heavier than other options
  • Requires a stovetop to work

Best for: While not necessarily designed to be a portable travel coffee maker, due to its lightweight and reasonably compact design, the Bialetti Moka Express is a great alternative when it comes to brewing coffee camping and on the go.

Made to make rich flavoured Italian espresso, with the Bialetti you certainly won’t be compromising on flavour while travelling and in my opinion it is the best camping coffee maker on our list.

7. Wacaco Pipamoka Review

WACACO Pipamoka

  • Dimensions : 8 x 8 x 20 cm
  • Weight : 425g
  • Coffee type: Immersion
  • Capacity : 300 ml

The Wacaco Pipamoka is another immersion style coffee maker, which is reasonably compact and lightweight.  It is an all in one coffee brewer, so perfect for the coffee drinker wanting a device they can brew the coffee in as well as drink from.

This compact coffee brewer works with an interesting technique.  Simply fill the chamber with water, add the ground coffee to the basket and place inside letting the basket sink right to the bottom.

Then twist the ring at the top, which in turns creates a vacuum pressure which through a suction force, draws the water down through the grounds.

The end result is a full flavoured cuppa in just minutes. To drink your coffee, you just need to swap the brewing lid over for the drinking lid.  Your coffee will stay piping hot in the thermos for hours.  So no more cold wasted coffee with the Wacaco Pipamoka.

The Wacaco Pipamoka is made with quality materials, featuring a stainless steel micro filter as well as a stainless steel 300ml mug.

  • Robust and easy to use
  • Produces a high quality brew
  • Small volume – not great for groups
  • Rotating the press can be challenging for some

Best for: If you love french press style coffee but want to keep if hot for longer, the Wacaco Pipamoka with built in mug is a great option to consider.

8. Stanley Adventure All In One French Press Review

Stanley 10-02345-008 Adventure All-in-One Boil + Brew Camping French Press, 32 oz, Silver

  • Dimensions : 11 x 11 x 20 cm
  • Weight : 440 g
  • Capacity : 940 ml

For those looking for a top quality and durable french press to take out and about, then the Stanley Adventure All In One Boil And Brew French Press is the perfect choice.

You can actually pack any stainless steel coffee plunger when you travel, but this one is specifically designed for lightweight backpack and hiking trips.

The Stanley Adventure All In One French Press is made from a quality 18/8 stainless steel pot and BPA free plastic plunger.  It has a locking handle that folds away for easy packing.

The plastic tube press has a double fine mesh filter that works well. The exterior steel compartment can actually be used as a pot too and you can boil water for your coffee directly in the pot.

The Stanley plunger is dishwasher safe and makes around 500ml of coffee (you can’t fill it all the way to the top as the tub press takes a lot of space). But this is still not bad when you’re travelling with other coffee drinkers.

It doesn’t have double wall insulation like other french presses, so it won’t keep your coffee hot.

  • Good capacity perfect for small groups
  • Lightweight and multi-functional
  • Foldaway handle
  • The tube press reduces the total capacity of the press
  • Lid doesn’t seal on pot when plunger not in place
  • Won’t keep coffee hot

Best for: This best travel coffee press plunger is perfect for taking camping with you, thanks to its sturdy design, or likewise take it to the office or building site to brew your cuppa.

Bellman CX25P Stovetop Coffee Maker.

This stove top espresso maker is capable of making either 3, 6 or 9 cups of coffee in a single brew.

So perfect for a camping trip with friends! Then once your coffee is extracted, use the steam to froth your milk with the attached steamer.

  • Cafe quality espresso and milk
  • Makes enough coffee for a group
  • Takes practice to get the most out of it
  • Premium price point

Best for: The Bellman CX-25P is a great one to consider if you’re after a portable espresso maker that can steam milk too. It has a large capacity, is lightweight and produces excellent quality espresso and microfoam.

10. Presto MyJo Single Cup Coffee Maker Review

Presto 02835 MyJo® Single Cup Coffee Maker, Black

  • Dimensions : 10.5 x 10.5 x 23 cm
  • Weight : 397g
  • Coffee type: Pod
  • Capacity : 1 cup

If you enjoy your pod coffee, then you’ll be completely surprised by this single cup coffee maker – particularly its extremely low cost price tag!  The Presto MyJo is incredibly lightweight and compact, making it perfect for those on the go.

With the Presto MyJo coffee maker, you have the option of using pods or ground coffee.  Just put either in the base, fill the tank with hot water and then attach to the base and place over your mug.

Then with a bit of elbow grease pump the top to brew.  The compressed air inside the water tank pushes the hot water through the pod and in doing so creates rich, smooth coffee.  The coffee makes it’s way down, straight into your mug.

The coffee maker is made from plastic which makes it easy to clean – just a quick rinse is all that is required.  It also features slip and heat resistant silicone grips to make it safe to handle.

  • Lightweight capsule coffee maker
  • Value price point
  • Takes a few long hard pushes to extract
  • Plastic components not made for longevity

Best for: The Presto MyJo is perfect for those that love their pod coffee and can’t bear to go without while travelling.

This coffee maker is super compact, light and comes with an unbelievably low price.  This is certainly a great option of those after a budget portable manual coffee maker.

Best Portable Coffee Makers For Camping And Travel

For us coffee lovers, travel can sometimes be a problem. If you’re lucky enough to be heading on your holidays to somewhere with a great coffee culture, then you’re in luck. But if you’re heading out on your travels with work, you don’t want to be stuck with the hotel coffee machine. And if you’re going out into nature you might think that instant (yuck) is your only hope of getting coffee on the road.

Handpresso Domepod Case

Because we know coffee lovers have very particular tastes, and that there’s more than one way to travel, we’ve tried to break this guide down so you can find what works best for you.

Best Portable Coffee Makers

Of course there are alternatives to taking a brewer on the road - you could pre batch enough cold brew to last for example, or bite the bullet and drink coffee like a cowboy. Or you could go with a dedicated and portable coffee maker. We think we know what you'd prefer, so here are a few of the best portable coffee makers.

Handpresso Auto Black E.S.E.

Handpresso Auto Black E.S.E.

However, if you have a portable coffee machine, if you’re moving around the country in your car or truck, then there’s no need for the coffee lover to miss out. The Handpresso Auto Black E.S.E. could well be the travel coffee maker you've been praying for.

This little handheld wonder only needs to be plugged into the 12v cigarette lighter in your car and you can brew your own espresso wherever you’re heading. All you need is water and coffee, and you have a portable espresso machine. The Handpresso is designed for use with any 7g E.S.E pod, meaning your espresso is consistently delicious, and the clean up is super easy: just dispose of the pod. E. S. E. pods (Easy Serving Espresso pods) are similar to those used in Nespresso portable coffee makers and just as convenient.

You don’t even need to add hot water: it also has the ability to heat cold water in its mini-boiler and generate up to 16 bars of pressure, which is not far from the pressure found in commercial machines. Lightweight at 880g, and compact enough to fit into your car's cup holder, this portable coffee maker is the perfect for travel.

But that’s not all - the Handpresso outdoor case comes with a thermos and four unbreakable glasses so you have everything you could possibly need in one stylish package.

Rok Espresso Maker

All well and good if you have the motor with you. But if you’re off camping espresso would be nice too right? What about coffee makers for campers? If you’re going properly off-grid, you can still make proper espresso as you go. In fact, it’s even more authentic this way, as the Rok Espresso Maker uses the same principles as the early espresso machines.

ROK Espresso Maker

The levers are used to apply pressure manually and force the water through the coffee, meaning that with the Rok Espresso maker you can make espresso without the need for a power outlet. The lever system generates between 5 and 10 bars of pressure, and the double spout portafilter means you can brew for you and a friend at the same time.

Built from engine grade aluminium, the Rok is both lightweight and extremely hard-wearing, and comes with a 10-year guarantee just to make the point. All you need is coffee and hot water and your very own espresso machine is good to go.

Flair Espresso Maker

Flair Espresso Maker

Unsurprisingly, this also means the Flair makes strong, creamy and crema topped espresso just as you would expect from your local barista.

And it’s easy to use whether you’ve made espresso before or not. Simply fill the basket with freshly ground coffee, reattach the head, and fill with hot water. Press down on the handle, and within 25-45 seconds, your espresso will be ready.

Bellman Espresso Steamer CX-25p

Bellman Espresso Steamer

The coffee is brewed in a similar manner to a moka pot or other stove top espresso maker. What makes the Bellman unique though, is that it also generates steam for frothing milk. And with the ability to make up to 9 shots at once, you can make campside coffee for all the family or your friends in one hit.

Just place the water in the chamber and coffee in the basket, reattach the top and place on the stove. You’ll know when the pressure is high enough to brew as the green indicator will turn on to let you know. At this point all you need to do is open the tap and your espresso will be released.

What's The Difference Between Nanopresso And Minipresso?

MiniPresso Case

Well, as the name suggests, it is a little smaller, roughly 2cm shorter than the original. Despite this, the capacity of the water chamber was increased, to 80ml. It is also 26 grams lighter than the original. So, in terms of portability and ease of travel, the Nanopresso is a decent improvement on the original.

But of course, size isn’t everything. What really stood out about the Minipresso was the quality of espresso it was able to produce. This was partly to do with the amount of pressure applied to the water as it was forced through the coffee grounds. So it’s undoubtedly a big plus that the Nanopresso is capable of producing up to 18 bars of pressure, which puts it right alongside a commercial coffee machine.

Providing an already impressive 16 bars of pressure (232 PSI), the Minipresso required the user to apply a force equal to 13.6 kg (30 lbs). Compared with the Nanopresso, which only requires a force of 11.6 kg, that’s a 2 kg difference.

Portable Nespresso Machine With Nespresso Capsules

Nanopresso NS Adaptor

The Nanopresso already does everything the Nespresso machine does. And they’ve made the Nanopresso NS Adaptor so that you can fit your Nespresso pods directly into the machine, so you can enjoy your favourite coffee wherever you are with your very own Nespresso travel machine.

Camping Coffee Makers

If you're the designated camp coffee maker, then you need the right tools. Luckily there are a variety of other options if none of the above took your fancy so you can find your perfect camping coffee maker.

Aeropress Go Coffee Maker

The Aeropress Go

The lightweight and ultra-durable design mean the Aeropress is perfect for packing up. The plastic construction means this innovative coffee maker won’t shatter or break when it’s packed tightly. Aeropress coffee is also thick and rich like espresso, which is why many espresso lovers opt for this when on the road. The other major plus of the Aeropress is its affordability. Not surprising, when you consider that the Aeropress is basically two plastic tubes. The lack of moving parts means this is super cheap to produce, but it also means there’s really nothing that can easily break.

The Aeropress also has the magical ability to self-clean, which is useful if you find yourself far from a running tap or faucet! To use the Aeropress when camping, all you need is coffee, water, and a stove to heat.

Camping Coffee Percolator

Fellow Clyde Stovetop Kettle

All you need to do is add the water to the lower chamber, and then place the basket containing the coffee on top of this. Screw on the top chamber and place on a low heat. If you pop the lid, you can watch the coffee as it begins to bubble up into the upper chamber. If it’s too quick, lower the heat. As soon as the upper chamber is close to full, remove from the heat and pour. See our moka pot coffee brewing guide for more great tips.

11 Best Travel Coffee Makers (Portable Espresso, French Press & Cold Brew)

There’s nothing worse to waking up in an Airbnb to find they don’t have a decent coffee maker that they described in their listing. First off, let me just admit I’m a total caffeine addict, I really need a good cup of joe to get me started. I’m not particularly fussy about the method used to make the coffee, although I love cappuccino in Rome or cafe con leche when I’m in Spain as long as its good quality coffee I’m happy. I’m just as satisftied by a cup good “cowboy” style boiled coffee when I am backpacking.

According to Forbes , drinking coffee may lower your risk of early death so you certainly don’t want to skimp on your coffee intake while on holiday or travelling for work! Not all coffee makers are made equal, so let’s first look at a few criteria to find the best ones for travel.

Best Travel Coffee Makers

A Moka Espresso Maker is a good option if you quickly want to make more than one cup of coffee. It can be a bit bulky in your suitcase and the brewing method is more laborious than for instance a French Press. But the delicious coffee is worth the hassle. Add a touch of home to your travel experience with the stove operated Moka espresso maker.

Presto MyJo Single Cup Coffee Maker

You don’t have to compromise on the quality of your coffee while travelling. This coffee maker is compatible with K-cups or another brand of your choice. Before starting, you can choose the cup size that you want (6, 8, or 10-ounce options) Insert the K-cup or coffee grounds, fill the reservoir with water, attach it, and start brewing your delicious cup of morning coffee.

Kuissential Collapsible Silicone Coffee Dripper

The silicone is a great material that doesn’t affect the taste of the coffee. And it’s more durable than a plastic or porcelain dripper. Kuissential Coffee Dripper is also very easy to clean and pack away. It is great value for money, and perfect for travelling. If a pour over coffee is your brewing method of choice, this travel coffee maker is your best option.

Primula Single Serve Coffee Brew Buddy

This single server will fit almost any size mug or cup. And it’s small enough to easily fit into your handbag or backpack. It is the ideal travelling accessory for a solo traveller who enjoys a regular coffee fix.

How to Select the Best Travel Coffee Maker

travel coffee press australia

Firstly, you want a coffee maker that will save you time while travelling. Try to find a coffee maker that brews in maximum five minutes. Also, pick a coffee maker that is easy to clean.

Next, decide what size coffee maker you want to travel with. Some travel coffee makers are so compact, they can fit in your handbag or backpack which often make great travel gifts .

Another important question to ask yourself is whether you want a powered or powerless coffee maker. Rather select a battery-operated or manual coffee maker if you are unsure of what kind of access you will have to a power source while travelling.

Lastly, you need to choose the type of coffee maker you prefer, for instance, espresso or pour-over. A French Press is one of the most convenient brewing methods for travel.

Whether you are looking for something to perk up your morning commute or want to sip a hot cup of joe on a mountain top in the middle of nowhere, a portable coffee maker is an absolute game-changer.

From single cup heaters to coffee makers you can share with friends, a portable coffee maker is a travel must-have for those who never want to miss a coffee fix, wherever they are headed.

Convenient Coffee Maker

Sure, you could nip into the nearest Starbucks (or other coffee shops available) and grab a paper cup on the go. But being able to brew your favorite hot beverage is far more satisfying and much more cost-effective.

Portable coffee makers are, among other things:

An automatic coffee maker can brew up a cup at the touch of a button. Your morning cup can be just as tasty as it is at home, even on the road.

Fancy lattes and other brews can be expensive. Nice for the occasional treat, but buying 1 every day can soon add up. Making your own will save you money from the get-go.

Compact, discreet, and easy to take with you, a portable coffee maker can fit in your carry-on bag and be produced for a brew whenever you need it.

Blendable To Suit Your Tastes

Once you get used to using your coffee maker, you will soon be brewing like a barista as you mix blends and flavors to create your perfect cup.

Because not all coffee makers are the same, they offer varying ways to brew your coffee on the go.

The most common types of coffee makers include:

Pour-over Coffee Makers

Possibly the best option for longer journeys, pour-over coffee makers are compact and light as a feather. Carry just a few grams of your favorite blend and voilà — a perfect coffee on the go. The only downside to these types of coffee makers is that you may have to wait a few minutes for your brew.

French Press

French press coffee makers work by immersing all of the coffee in hot water to capture more of its natural flavor, resulting in a rich, strong cup of coffee. While the coffee may be better, the cleaning processes take longer, and some French press coffee makers are more portable than others.

Espresso Makers

If you like your coffee dark, a portable espresso maker will give you big flavors on the go. As the machine applies pressure to the beans, the maximum flavor and oils spill out, giving the same result as bigger coffee machines, but in a compact and completely portable format. These models are the most expensive but will be a big hit with true coffee connoisseurs.

Hot Tip: Check out our favorite travel mugs to go with your travel coffee maker.

When choosing your perfect portable coffee maker, consider the following:

Portability

Portable Coffee Maker

One of the most important features of a portable coffee maker is that it needs to be “portable” — the clue is in the title. Some types of coffee makers are far larger and bulkier than others, so look for one that suits your needs.

Whichever type of coffee maker you favor, it needs to be easy to carry and not take up too much space. Otherwise, you may as well leave it back at home.

Hot Tip: Look for lightweight materials like silicone, and consider coffee makers that are complete and without the need for lots of other fancy accessories.

Coffee Maker Durability

Traveling can take its toll on your possessions, and you need to make sure that you buy appliances and devices that will go the distance. Stay clear of delicate glass coffee makers and opt instead for reinforced materials such as plastic, silicone, or even aluminum for guaranteed durability.

Brewing Time

A portable coffee maker is almost pointless if you have to wait half of your journey time for it to brew. Choose appliances that take between 30 seconds to 5 minutes to brew, and you can enjoy speedy coffee on the go.

Ease of Cleaning

Easy to clean coffee maker

Dirty coffee is not good coffee. Consider where you are headed and how easy the coffee maker will be to clean when you get there. If you are hotel-based or have an apartment, you can enjoy the luxuries of a hot tap and maybe even a dishwasher, but if you are camping in the middle of nowhere, you should choose a coffee maker that is easy to clean, with minimal components.

Coffee Maker Volume

Coffee for 1? 2? Or maybe more than a few? The size of your coffee maker could determine how grumpy your fellow travelers will be in the morning. You can be the chief coffee maker for as many as you want, but remember that the larger the capacity of the appliance, the bigger and bulkier it is likely to be.

Nearly every appliance or device you take with you will eventually need charging or require some form of power to make it work. Your portable coffee maker will be no different, but you need to be sure how you need to power it before you go.

Those that don’t run on elbow grease alone will run on electricity or batteries. To ensure your charging needs match your destination, read the instructions and reviews before you buy.

I have a weird superstition. It feels like the quality of my morning coffee is a portent for the kind of day I'm going to have. It's not only the dose of caffeine that does the trick, although that does help. It's also the ritual that surrounds it—the smell, the sound, and even the wait are all a part of how coffee sets me up for the day ahead.

It's easy to feel lost without that morning ritual, especially when you're already uprooted and far from home. Whether you're out camping, on a business trip, or visiting friends and family, getting that little taste of home can help you feel grounded and ready to face the day. We've rounded up the best portable coffee makers to brew while traveling. Some of these options are also great for people who aren't working from home , since office kitchens are likely closed.

Best Overall

The AeroPress is one of the most popular coffee brewers on the market for a reason: It makes a damn fine cup of coffee. The AeroPress Go produces the same great results but in a smaller, travel-friendly package. The Go is barely bigger than a coffee mug, incredibly lightweight, and entirely self-contained. All you need to add is coffee.

A part of the reason for the AeroPress' success is that the brewing method is infinitely customizable to your tastes. Take the three ingredients—coffee, water, and pressure—and start experimenting until you find what suits your taste. There is no wrong way to brew with an Aeropress. I do suggest starting with the method the company endorses, which you'll find included in the box, but once you've mastered it there are plenty of other ways to do it. (Try all the winning recipes from AeroPress' annual competitions .)

The AeroPress is also very forgiving; it's almost difficult to make a bad cup of coffee. You don't have to use some involved process. On those chilly October mornings of a late-season camping trip, you can just throw in some grounds, give it a stir, plunge, and you've got a great, hot cup of joe to warm your bones. I like the AeroPress Go for its compact, all-in-one design, but the original AeroPress ($40) is still quite portable and is another option to consider.

Best All-in-One

The Cafflano Klassic is everything you need to brew in a single, compact, relatively lightweight package. It combines a hand-mill grinder, drip kettle, and metal pour-over filter, as well as an insulated mug, in a single tumbler-shaped package. You can grind your beans, brew, and drink your coffee without needing anything but a way to boil water.

The resulting brew is some of the best pour-over coffee I've made. Getting the right grind is key, but the adjustable grinder allows you to experiment until you find something you enjoy. If even the compact design of the Klassic is too much, you can also do what I've been doing when I travel: Just bring the pour-over filter. It's made of stiff plastic and metal and has so far held up well in my carry-on bag.

Best Super Simple Coffee

Dripkit's disposable pour-over coffee packets are the simplest, best-tasting pour-over coffee you're going to get on the road. Tear open the packet, set it atop your mug (or hotel room cup), and pour over boiling water. The company's own coffee wasn't strong enough for my tastes, but Dripkit partners with Portland's Stumptown Coffee Roaster to make a pour-over kit that brews an excellent cup of joe. The packets are disposable, so use these sparingly.

We've linked to the 5-pack below, but you can also opt for a 10-pack or go the subscription route and save some dough. It can get pricey, but when you want to travel light without sacrificing taste, this is the way to go.

Best for Endless Possibilities

The Delter Press bears some resemblance to the AeroPress, but it adds something to the equation: pressure. The Delter Press is not an espresso maker, but it does, in my experience, brew stronger than the AeroPress. I also found it possible to control the strength (taste-wise) to an almost infinite degree by varying the grind, the amount of coffee, and the amount of water. One thing I like better with the Delter is the ability to add more water without starting a new brew, something that's not possible with the AeroPress.

Delter suggests starting with a medium to fine grind, but I got enjoyable results even with a very fine espresso grind. To me, this is the best part of the Delter—it offers a wide variety of brewing possibilities, making it easy to tailor the results to your individual tastes.

KitchenAid’s New Espresso Machine Won’t Wake Up Your Roommates

Best Portable French Press

The Espro Ultralight Press is the simplest and lightest French press I tested. It also produces the least amount of sediment, a common problem in French press brewing that leaves a gritty mouthfeel every time you drink. This didn't happen with the Ultralight Press. It's double-walled and vacuum insulated, which means it will keep your hot coffee hot and iced coffee cold (about three hours on hot and five on cold in my testing). One of my favorite parts of the Espro is that with a quick rinse it can double as a water bottle when you're done with your coffee.

Palmpress coffee brewer device

Best Compact Design

The Palmpress is a press-to-brew solution that packs up small and is pretty lightweight as well. One of the nice things about it is there's nothing extra needed: no filters and no cleaning brushes. It's simple to brew, and once I got the ground dialed in (a finer ground works best, but it's worth experimenting), the result is a clean, bright flavor with almost no bitterness. This was especially true with medium roasts, which I found to be the best choice for the Palmpress. My only concern is that it does require pressure, so you'll need a sturdy mug. Flimsy hotel cups won't work.

Ovrlndr french press

Best Camp Brewer

Planetary Design appears to have run out of vowels, but that's OK because it has managed to turn out a great French press for when you're at camp. The Ovrlndr is solid, if a bit heavy, and unlike every other French press I've used, it's super easy to clean. Unscrew the bottom, dump the grounds in the compost, rinse, and you're done. As with other Planetary Design presses, the Ovrlndr features the Brü-Stop filter system. It consists of an extra-fine screen and silicone ring that creates a tight seal against the side of the mug to prevent grounds from escaping into your coffee. I still also like our former Planetary Design pick, the Double Shot 3.0 mug ($42) , but I prefer the larger capacity and easier cleaning of the Ovrlndr.

Pipamoka portable coffee maker

Best for Mild Coffee

This Wacaco gadget has the most unusual brewing method out of all the testing I've done. It's a vacuum-pressure brewer that works by twisting. You fill a brewing chamber with coffee, and the insulated container with water, and then you drop the coffee chamber into the water and let it settle to the bottom. Once the air bubbles are out, you begin twisting the brewing mechanism up and out of the mug portion (which doubles as a mug, keeping the coffee hot for hours). I highly recommend watching the video to get a better sense of how it works. It may be odd, but the results are great. I found it works especially well with milder coffees, picking up the subtlety of lighter roasts.

GSI collapsable portable coffee maker

Best for Backpacking

When you want to go ultra-light and ultra-compact but still want to brew quality coffee, GSI's collapsible pour-over coffee maker is your best choice. It weighs a mere 5 ounces and collapses down to about the size of the lid of an old coffee tin. It's also made of durable silicone.

When extended, it's around the height of your standard drip cone filter. Technically it takes #4 filters, though in a pinch you can use just about any filter (you'll need to be more careful with smaller filters). The bottom has a series of rings that mean the GSI balances well on any container, including wide-mouth water bottles, Jet-Boil pots , your standard cheap insulated camping mugs, and even my favorite drip-free, spill-free Contigo mug ($17) . This version includes a handy hand-grinder, too.

Primula Moka portable coffee maker

Best for Frustrated Espresso Lovers

I have tried several dozen different ways of making coffee, and I always come back to the Moka pot. The classic Moka pot is the Bialetti 6-cup model , which you'll find in nearly every house in Italy, but I prefer this stainless steel version. A Moka pot is not quite espresso. The pressure is generally about 2 to 3 bar—to qualify as espresso you need to hit 9 bar—but it's less effort and easier to clean up. It's not the most portable way to make coffee, which is why it's not my top pick. Still, nine times out of 10, this is what you'll find me using at home, at campgrounds, and even in hotel rooms with a portable camp stove. (Yes, I'm that guy, please don't tell the hotel manager.)

Brewing Secrets

There are three basic, vital coffee brewing tips I'll impart.

Find good, fresh beans: Great coffee starts with high-quality beans. Quality beans can make even cheap brewing equipment shine. High quality means fresh. Find a local coffee roaster in your area. For testing, I used beans from Jittery Joe's Roasting Company in Athens, Georgia, specifically the Wake-n-Bake blend . (Disclosure: I worked for Jittery Joe's for many years, it's a favorite of mine.)

If you don't have a coffee roaster nearby, you can order beans online from reputable sellers like Blue Bottle Coffee or try a wide variety through a coffee subscription service like Atlas Coffee Club or my new favorite, Trade Coffee , which works directly with local roasters. I also recently tested a low-acid coffee from Trucup . It's made especially for people who have trouble with the acidity of regular coffee.

Get a quality grinder: Once you have good, freshly-roasted beans you need to grind them. You'll want a burr grinder, which grinds your beans evenly rather than chopping them like a blade grinder. I upgraded to a Hario Skerton Pro ($38) hand grinder, but if you want to go electric I recommend the Baratza Encore ($179) . If you're not sure which is right for you, be sure to read through our Best Coffee Grinders guide.

Experiment: Pick one of these coffee makers and start experimenting with it at home. If you want to have reproducible results, make sure you weigh out your beans and water using a good scale like the Apexstone scale with timer so you can track your pour-over pace, and take notes. It may sound nerdy, and it is, but after experimenting for a few days you'll likely find something you love. If you have notes, then you'll know how to make your perfect cup of coffee every time—no matter where you are.

Travel Coffee Maker

Best Portable Coffee Makers for Travel

Last updated: April 7, 2024 . Written by Laurence Norah - 14 Comments

We, like many people, love coffee. It’s a staple of our morning routine, whether we’re on a road trip, on a camping adventure, or just hanging out at home.

Of course, there’s a world of variety when it comes to coffee, and not every coffee drink is created equally. When we’re at home it’s easy for us to make a great cup of coffee, but when we’re travelling, it’s not always so simple. And as full-time travel bloggers and photographers, we find ourselves on the road a lot. So finding the best travel coffee maker was something we were keen to do!

Whether you are trying to escape the instant coffee in hotel rooms or the bad diner coffee, trying to fuel your espresso addition in the wilderness, or trying to save money on buying expensive coffee at places like Starbucks, we think that making your own coffee with a portable coffee maker may be the way to go.

You can make your own coffee to your own liking for much less than you’d spend if you bought it from a coffee shop. Making your own coffee can also be a more environmentally friendly option as well.

With this in mind, we wanted to share a list of the best travel coffee makers on the market. With one of these devices, you’ll be able to make great coffee wherever you are in the world – be that on a hiking trip, in an RV, or at a hotel.

As well as our list of the best coffee makers for travel, we’re also going to share everything you need to know when looking to buy a coffee maker. So even if you don’t go for one of our options, you’ll know exactly what to look for when purchasing a travel coffee machine.

Things to Consider When Buying a Portable Coffee Maker for Travel

Before you buy a coffee maker for travel, there are a few things you will want to consider. There’s a huge range of different types of coffee makers on the market, and the style of coffee they make also varies.

So it’s important before you buy that you know what to look out for. Here are some of the key things to consider when shopping for a travel coffee maker.

Brewing Method & Type of Coffee

As you are likely already aware, there are a variety of ways that you can brew coffee. These include French Press style coffee, drip coffee (also known as filter coffee), Turkish style coffee, pour over coffee, and espresso coffee. The latter can be used to make a range of other coffee drinks like Americanos, cappuccinos, and lattes, with the addition of ingredients like hot water or steamed milk.

You probably already have a style of coffee you enjoy, which will come with an associated brewing method. It’s important to pick a travel coffee maker that can make your preferred style of coffee, especially as no one travel coffee maker has the ability to make every type of coffee.

Espresso in particular is more challenging to make on the go, as it requires hot water to be pushed through very fine coffee beans at between 7 and 10 bars of pressure. These types of systems tend to be heavier and more expensive.

The options listed below offer different methods of brewing coffee, so it’s important to choose the right one for your needs.

AeroPress Travel Coffee Maker

Dimensions & Weight

This is one of the most important factors when deciding which travel coffee maker is the right choice for you. The first thing you need to consider is the overall size of your luggage, and how much space you are willing to allot to your coffee maker.

Some of the options below have the ability to fold up, while others are lightweight and easily squeezed into the corner of your suitcase or popped in your hand luggage.

On the other hand, some of the coffee makers we mention in this list are much heavier and may only be suitable if you are traveling via car or RV. But they are probably too bulky for air travel.

Deciding on the ideal dimensions and weight all depends on your method of transportation, the size of your luggage, and the weight allowance of the airline you may be travelling with.

Volume of Coffee It Makes

Most travel coffee makers are designed for making quite a small amount of coffee, usually enough for only one or two people. It’s definitely worth checking before you buy to make sure the device you buy will make you enough coffee.

For example, if you are used to drinking a 12 oz mug of coffee every morning, you probably don’t want a system that will only make you 6 oz at a time.

Travel Coffee

Power Source

Some of the travel coffee makers on the market work by hand, while others require batteries, electric outlets, or solar power. If you are buying something for backwoods camping or boating, the options that work by electricity are not going to be ideal for you.

However, if you are staying in accommodation with access to plugs, you may wish to go for something electric or that can be charged for later use. If it needs to be plugged in, you want to be sure that it works in all the countries you plan to visit – the US for example has a 110v supply, whilst the UK has a 240v supply.

Also consider that most coffee makers require hot water to make coffee. If the coffee maker you buy doesn’t have a way to heat the coffee via a power source, you’re going to need something that will. If you’re camping, you’ll likely have a portable stove or access to a fire to heat water, so this might not be an issue.

Time to Brew Coffee

Sometimes you want a cup of coffee, fast! No fuss, no waiting around, just smooth, flavorful coffee on the go. How much fuss are you willing to go through for your morning cup, and how much time does it take to brew a cup or pot of coffee? This is something to bear in mind when searching for your next travel coffee maker.

All of the machines we mention in this list take varying amounts of time to make a cup, and also differing measures of coffee they can make at once. If you are traveling as a group of 4 or more for example, you may want a different solution than a solo traveler. Always consider the time per cup when calculating how long it takes to brew.

JoGo CoffeeStraw

Ease of Cleaning

The last thing you want to worry about while you travel is how you’re going to clean the nooks and crannies of your coffee maker, so we definitely recommend looking into how easy the product is to clean before purchasing.

Some can be cleaned with a simple rinse, while others may have more finicky components that need to be cleaned after use. You will also find that certain coffee makers are dishwasher friendly, which is always an added bonus for when you have access to a dishwasher.

Environmental Impact

We are delighted to see more and more travelers opting for more environmentally friendly and reusable products lately.

In relation to coffee and coffee makers, it’s important to consider that coffee grinds are compostable, while single-use filters or pods might not be. Keep an eye out for recyclable or compostable options, it will do a world of good for the environment!

Travel Coffee Maker

Additional Features like a Coffee Bean Grinder or Milk Frother

If you are a bit of a coffee connoisseur, you may require additional features to create your perfect cup of coffee, like a whole coffee bean grinder or milk frother . Some coffee makers have these built in, whilst others will require you to purchase additional accessories and add to the weight and cost of your final coffee making setup.

Versatility

Versatility is a big bonus when it comes to travel coffee machines, as you end up getting much more bang for your buck. While most machines only work with one type of coffee, others allow you to use a variety, from whole bean and fine ground, to K cups and instant coffee.

The same can be said for the types of coffee they can produce, for example, espresso, Americano, drip-style, and so on.

Another benefit is if the coffee maker can double up as a coffee mug so that you don’t need to carry both, or if it can also be used for tea, hot chocolate, smoothies, hot soup, or noodles. Some coffee makers even have the ability to keep your drinks cold as well as hot, or to make cold brew coffee as well as hot coffee.

This provides far more value to you in the long run than a regular coffee machine.

Lastly, take into consideration whether or not the product will also be useful in other situations other than just travel. Can you see yourself using it at home, work, hiking, or on a picnic at a local park? The more versatile the coffee maker, the more opportunities you will have to use it.

Travel Coffee

This isn’t something you usually need to think about when you are purchasing a coffee maker for your home, but if you are planning on taking it on the road, it is going to need to be able to withstand the wear and tear of travel.

Take a look at the key components that ensure long-lasting quality, such as the materials used and the warranty provided. Is it made from plastic vs stainless steel, and are there any extra parts that might be easily breakable?

We’ve searched for the highest quality products for every budget, but only you will know the level of durability required for your next travel adventure, so bear this in mind before you buy.

Prices can vary between USD $5.00 to over $100 depending on the level of functionality and durability that you are searching for. I always recommend seeking the best quality travel coffee maker for your budget. The better the quality, the longer is will last when you’re using it on your travels.

We have searched the internet to find the highest quality products at every price point so that there is something to suit everyone’s budget, as well as of course including our favorite travel coffee makers that we know and love.

Travel coffee maker

Here’s our list of the best travel coffee makers on the market. They cover a wide range of budgets and styles of coffee, and we hope it helps you find the perfect option for your coffee on the go.

At just 1.6oz / 45g, it is by far the lightest option on this list as the eco-friendly and reusable lid simply fits on top of most mugs. This coffee maker is small but mighty. It’s designed to be used over a single cup, but you could use it over a flask and make more coffee.

We love that it is so easy to wash with a quick rinse and there is no battery or power required. Although this is one of the more affordable and lightweight (136 g) options on this list, don’t forget that you will need to bring another cup or container for the coffee, and you will need to have access to hot water.

While the mug is BPA free and dishwasher friendly, the body of this coffee maker is made from plastic, which means it isn’t quite as eco-friendly and durable as some of the other options on this list.

Coffee Gator

We’re big fans of the Coffee Gator motto “Bring the coffee house home”. They created the Coffee Gator Thermal Travel Cup with the aim of being able to make and drink incredible, barista-quality coffee at home or on the go.

travel coffee press australia

The focus with this travel coffee maker is on high quality components. In their words, “Inferior metal makes drinks taste like licking a battery” and we couldn’t agree more. Which is why this is made from military grade stainless steel.

The dual layers of premium stainless steel create a vacuum that reduces heat transfer, so you are guaranteed the perfect temperature coffee for longer. In fact, it keeps coffee hot for 6 hours, or cold for 20 hours.

It comes with a stainless-steel filter for making pour over coffee, and it doubles up as a stylish insulated travel coffee mug too.

Coffee Gator

When used with the pour over system it can make 12oz / 340ml of coffee, whilst the cup on its own can hold 20oz / 568ml. Enough to wake anyone up we think!

The lid slips on and off in a flash, rinses in seconds, and is dishwasher safe. The icing on top of the cake is their total satisfaction promise, which covers everything they sell (they had nearly 10,000 positive reviews last year).

We travel with this coffee system and we also use this at home for a quick cup. It makes a great travel coffee mug in general, and it makes good coffee quickly and easily. We’d say it’s between this and the AeroPress Go for us in terms of our favorite travel coffee options.

Capacity: 12oz / 340ml Weight: 10oz / 400g Type: Pour over Requires power? No Requires hot water? Yes Price: Check latest price on Amazon here

JoGo CoffeeStraw

If portability is a critical factor in your decision making, then you should definitely consider the JoGo CoffeeStraw.

This innovative little device is basically a cross between a metal straw and a French Press. At one end of the stainless steel straw you’ll find a BPA free heat regulated silicone tip for drinking through. At the other end is a fine micron-mesh filter made from stainless steel.

travel coffee press australia

Using the straw couldn’t be simpler. Just add ground coffee to any cup, pour in hot water, then wait a couple of minutes for it to steep (and the water to cool down!). Once brewed, you just drink through the straw. As you drink the coffee passes through the filter, giving you a coffee that is similar in style to a French Press.

Obviously, there is no pressure involved in the extraction, so the coffee produced isn’t espresso style. However, we find it to produce very tasty and smooth coffee, and it is incredibly easy to use. It’s also very small and lightweight.

JoGo CoffeeStraw

In terms of cleaning, the filter unscrews for easy rinsing. The straw also comes with a bottle cleaner style brush so you can clean the inside, and it is also dishwasher safe.

The other good thing about this straw is that its use is not just restricted to coffee. You can also use it for loose leaf tea, fresh juice with seeds, or any other drink where you want to use a more environmentally friendly straw. It can also be used to drink cold brew coffee.

Of course, there are some drawbacks. You need to supply your own hot water and mug, and there’s no way to control the brew strength other than by adjusting the initial amount of coffee. As the coffee grounds (or tea leaves) stay in the mug, it will continue to brew as you drink.

We haven’t found this to be a problem, but if you are someone who likes to savour a cup over a prolonged time this is something to consider. The best option is to try and drink it consistently rather than slowly as otherwise the drink may become bitter or over brewed.

From an environmental perspective it saves on plastic straws as well as paper filters and single use coffee pods. It’s a unique product, and definitely one to consider for ultra-portable coffee making on the go!

Capacity: 1 cup Weight: 1oz / 23g Type: French Press Requires power? No Requires hot water? Yes Price: Check latest price on Amazon here and direct from JoGo here .

GROSCHE Milano Moka Pot

When I travelled across Australia for a year, primarily camping out of my four-wheel drive vehicle in remote locations, my coffee maker of choice was a Moka Pot.

travel coffee press australia

This is one of the most popular ways to make coffee at home in Italy. Basically, it’s a metal pot with two parts. – the hot water goes in the bottom container below the ground coffee, and you place it directly on a heat source like a stove top or gas burner. The water boils and is pushed through the coffee grounds and up into the upper pot.

Moka pots make espresso style coffee quickly and easily. The model we’ve chosen is available in 1, 3, 6 and 9 cup sizes, so you can brew from 1.5oz up to 15.2oz of coffee depending on your preferences.  You can either drink this as espresso, or use it as the base for longer drinks like an Americano or latte.

At 1.35lbs / 612g this isn’t the lightest coffee maker in our list, but it is definitely a durable and easy to use option. Just be aware it’s not dishwasher safe.

Capacity: 10oz / 295ml Weight: 1.8lb / 612g Type: espresso Requires power? No, just a heat source Requires hot water? No Price: Check latest price on Amazon here

Stanley Camp Pour Over Coffee Set

Stanley are well known for their all-steel vacuum flask which they have been making since 1913. However, they also make a number of other camp and travel focused products, including some portable coffee makers.

travel coffee press australia

We’re recommending the Stanley Camp Pour Over Coffee Set, which comes, as the name suggests, as a set with a cup and a stainless steel pour over filter.

You can also buy just the pour over part of the set if you already have a mug or cup you want to use.

The pour over filter and mug are both made from 18/8 stainless steel and is BPA free. It’s also dishwasher safe. The mug itself has a drink-through lid as well as double-wall vacuum insulation which can keep your drink hot for up to 1.5hours.

The mug has a capacity of 12oz and the pour over filter has a capacity of 20oz. The pour over has a built-in easy clean stainless-steel filter, so you don’t need any disposable filters.

It’s a very solid and sturdy device which is built to withstand the rigors of a camping trip. It also has an excellent guarantee. Just be aware that it is a little heavy due to the solid build.

Stanley also make a range of other products , including a portable French Press . Definitely worth checking out if you want a sturdy, well-made solution for your travel coffee needs.

Capacity: 12oz / 340ml (mug) Weight: 9.6oz / 272g (filter), 11.2oz / 317g (mug) Type: Pour over Requires power? No Requires hot water? Yes Price: Check latest price on Amazon here

AeroPress Espresso & Coffee Maker

If you are looking for something quick and simple that brews smooth ground-free coffee every time, this AeroPress might be a fantastic option for you. AeroPress basically created a new type of portable coffee extraction method, known as the AeroPress brewing system.

travel coffee press australia

The AeroPress brewing system results in uniform extraction for a full coffee flavor. It includes a micro filter for grit free coffee and guarantees a 20 second ‘press time’ – just add your coffee and water. The end result is up to an 8oz coffee drink which is similar to but not quite as strong as espresso, to which you can add water to create a 10 oz sized Americano if you wish.

The AeroPress kit comes with 350 disposable filters, a scoop, funnel and stirrer. However, we recommend picking up a metal filter instead of the disposable filters so you don’t have to bring loads of filters with you when you travel, and also to avoid waste. You might also consider the flow control filter cap for more brewing control.

An added bonus is that there are no fiddly parts that are hard to get to when washing, so the cleanup is relatively simple. That said, in our experience no coffee system is ever that easy to clean as coffee grinds have a habit of getting everywhere!

The AeroPress also comes with a tote bag to keep your coffee maker tucked away neat and tidy on your travels.

Overall, this is a relatively lightweight and portable system that makes great coffee, and which is perfect for throwing in your backpack for your next camping trip or holiday. It’s designed to be simple to use, and you don’t have to worry about grind size or getting coffee grit in your finished drink, plus you can make both espresso style coffee and Americano style coffee by just adding hot water.

We have a complete AeroPress review if you’d like to learn more, which also compares the original against the AeroPress Go, so you can decide which might suit your needs better.

In addition, if you’re looking for a coffee maker made in the USA, then this is a great option, as AeroPress manufacturers all their coffee systems in the United States. As an aside, if you’re looking for more US made products, check out our guide to the best gifts made in the USA .

Capacity: 10oz / 296ml Weight: 8oz / 226g Type: AeroPress Requires power? No Requires hot water? Yes Price: Check latest price on Amazon  here

AeroPress Go

AeroPress also make the AeroPress Go . This has the same brewing system as the original, but it includes a 15oz (444ml) cup which fits all the accessories when not in use, and is slightly more compact. We have one of these and love it for the coffee it produces as well as for how portable it is.

travel coffee press australia

It also comes with 350 disposable filters, but we’d recommend picking up a metal filter instead of the disposable filters so you don’t have to bring loads of filters with you when you travel, and also to avoid waste. You also get a coffee scoop.

It is obviously slightly heavier overall than the original AeroPress because of the mug, and it can only brew 8oz instead of 10oz as it’s slightly smaller. Otherwise you’re going to get the same great coffee.

The AeroPress Go is one of our most recommended systems for travelers, especially for campers and hikers where weight and simple cleaning is important – we’ve enjoyed it when exploring the outdoors of Scotland. See our complete AeroPress review for more on our experiences using this when traveling.

Capacity: 8oz / 220ml Weight: 11.2oz / 317g Type: AeroPress Requires power? No Requires hot water? Yes Price: Check latest price on Amazon here

Soulhand 5 in 1 Electric Coffee Maker & Grinder

If you are a bit of a coffee connoisseur, you probably like to do everything yourself, including grinding your beans. From a travel perspective, whole bean coffee usually stays fresher than ground coffee, so having a way to grind your beans on demand makes logical travel sense too.

This travel coffee maker from Soulhand takes on-the-go coffee making to the next level. You can grind your own beans with the built-in battery powered electric burr grinder. Then, you just add hot water and allow the coffee to pour through the reusable stainless steel filter dripper into the insulated thermos mug.

The grinder is powered by a built-in lithium-ion battery which holds enough charge to do 7 – 8 grinds. It’s chargeable by USB, meaning you can use a wide variety of chargers to top it off. A full charge takes around 3 hours.

It measures 11.1 x 4.7 x 4.7 inches, which is compact enough to travel with. The cup will also fit in most car cup holders for your next road trip.

This high-quality coffee maker and cup has a handy split design, making the cleaning process simple and quick. You can also use it with ground coffee of course if you prefer.

Chulux travel coffee maker

Although this travel coffee maker is one of the heaviest on our list, weighing 2.2lbs / 1kg, we wanted to include it for those of you wanting coffee when traveling via car or RV. Despite the weight, it’s still fairly compact.

It’s a single cup design which fits most coffee capsules, or you can use your own ground coffee, so you have plenty of options to make drip coffee. It’s quite similar to the drip coffee makers you find in many hotel rooms across the world.

travel coffee press australia

The Chulux travel coffee maker includes a 12oz / 340ml water tank and a removable drip tray, which ensures that your daily coffee demand is met, mess free. It’s also quite quick, producing a 12oz cup of coffee in around 3 minutes, and it has an automatic shut off function after brewing for safety.

Cleaning is simple, with a quick wipe of the coffee outlets, and the detachable accessories are dishwasher safe. However you may find that you need to use a small sharp item such as a paper clip to really clear out the outlets every now and again for longer lasting maintenance. It is also easy to clean and store. It supports standard sized or larger cups (up to 5.3“ tall), and you can adjust the drip tray to fit your cup.

To top it off, the product comes with quality assurance and a one year warranty. It is also made from BPA-free material and it is UL & FDA certified, for safety guaranteed.

Bodum Travel Press

This French Press travel coffee maker allows you to brew coffee on the go and drink from the same container when it’s ready to go. It couldn’t be more simple to use, simply add your ground coffee and hot water and seal the lid for a delicious, freshly pressed cup in just 4 minutes.

travel coffee press australia

The body is made of vacuum-sealed, double-wall construction stainless steel, keeping your beverages hot or cold for several hours. It also features a spill resistant lid, built-in plunger and silicone, non-slip grip for easy use on the go.

The travel mug itself without the press can hold 15oz / 420ml of coffee, however when you use it to brew coffee the grounds take up some of the space so expect around a 12oz / 340ml serving. It is dishwasher safe for easy cleaning. It weighs 14.4 oz / 410grams, but if you are looking for something a little smaller and lighter, you can always opt for the smaller version which weighs just 8.8oz / 250 grams.

For those that prefer loose leaf tea, the Bodum Travel Press works equally as well for brewing a cuppa, giving it extra points for versatility!

Wacaco Portable Espresso Maker

Famous among the hiking community, the Wacaco Portable Espresso Maker is designed to be the smallest, lightest and most versatile handheld espresso machine. Space and weight are major factors when selecting the right travel coffee maker and this model is portable, compact and functional!

travel coffee press australia

With its innovative design, the Minipresso is easy to use, with no battery or electric power needed. You just need to add ground coffee and hot water. For a shorter trip you can even add boiling water to its tank so you don’t need to worry about heating it up while you’re out.

With the help of the semi-automatic piston, the water is pushed through the coffee at 8 bars, and after just a few pushes, your espresso is ready to be extracted. Water tanks of different capacities are also available so you can enjoy multiple espresso types, ranging from ristretto to caffè lungo.

Considering the body of the machine is made from stainless steel, it isn’t very heavy, weighing just 360g. A quick simple wash will do wonders, but keep an eye on the indentations in the filter chamber to ensure that it continues to seal nice and tight.

You can buy it from Amazon, as well as directly from Wacaco here . It’s worth checking out the Wacaco website as they have a number of other products you might like too.

CONQUECO Portable Espresso Machine

The Conqueco Portable Espresso machine is a one-stop-shop for coffee on the go, with support for Nespresso pods and L’OR capsules. It’s also one of the few options on the market that has a built in battery which allows you to heat your water on the go – although this can take a while, so using pre-heated water is quicker.

Operated by a rechargeable lithium battery, this machine can heat water up to 194F/90C and the coffee it produces is at 158F/70C. You will need to use the supplied car or wall adapter to charge the battery pack prior to use.

If you use the built-in battery to heat the water from room temperature, it will be able to make three cups of espresso. If you use preheated water, it can make 200 cups!

travel coffee press australia

With a 50 ml water tank capacity, you can create a standard 40-45ml single espresso shot very quickly from hot water – in seconds in fact. The 15 bar high-pressure pump helps to unlock the delicate flavor and premium aromas of your coffee capsule during the brewing process. Once you are done, it has a self-cleaning process.

With all of this functionality, it is understandable that this option is higher up on the scale in terms of weight, coming in at 31oz / 880g. It is also important to note that this coffee maker was designed and tested for Nespresso capsules only, so it does not work with Nespresso compatible capsules or ground coffee.

Capacity: 1.6oz / 45ml Weight: 31oz / 880g Type: Nespresso pods Requires power?  No, except to charge Requires hot water? No, but can be used with hot water if available Price: Check latest price on Amazon here

Bripe – Coffee Brew Pipe Kit

If you’re looking for something a bit different for your coffee making needs, then check out the Bripe Coffee Brew Pipe. As the name suggests this is kind of like a drinking pipe for coffee lovers.

travel coffee press australia

The “bowl” of the pipe serves as the brewing and heating area, whilst the stem is where the coffee is filtered as you drink it. The kit includes a quad-jet torch which you can use to heat the water in the bowl of the pipe before you suck it through the stem, meaning you don’t need to worry about power.

There’s also a thermometer so you can check the water temperature is perfect for your brew, and the filter is stainless steel and reusable. The only waste is the ground coffee. In terms of brew time, you’re generally looking at around a minute to heat the water up, and a couple more minutes for it to cool down to a drinkable temperature.

It makes around 2oz of coffee at a time, and only weighs 337g. It’s definitely a unique portable coffee making device!

Capacity: 2oz / 57ml Weight: 11.9oz / 337g Type: Coffee pipe Requires power?  No Requires hot water? No, but can be used with hot water if available Price: Check latest price on Amazon here

Handpresso Wild Hybrid

This simple, lightweight and elegant travel coffee maker is the latest portable espresso maker from Handpresso. You can use the Wild Hybrid with either E.S.E. pods or ground espresso coffee.

travel coffee press australia

This espresso maker works a bit like a bicycle pump. To use, you generate up to 16-bars of pressure with the hand pump, add hot water (from a kettle or a thermo flask), espresso coffee (ground coffee or E.S.E. pods), and then let the machine prepare high quality espresso with the push of a button! As it’s hand operated there’s no battery or electricity required: making this a great option for espresso in the back country. It’s also relatively lightweight at 17oz / 480g.

This compact travel option can also come as part of a beautiful outdoor kit , which is the perfect gift for any coffee lover in your life. Complete with a hard travel case for ultimate protection, 4 unbreakable cups and a new thermo flask with integrated thermometer.

Capacity: 1.76oz / 50ml Weight: 17oz / 480g Type: e spresso Requires power? No Requires hot water? Yes Price: Check latest price on Amazon here

Pakt Coffee Kit

The Pakt Coffee Kit aims to provide nearly everything you need to create coffee on a go, in a portable and travel friendly package.

travel coffee press australia

The device includes an electric kettle with dual voltage support for worldwide travel, a 12oz double walled stainless steel travel mug with lid, a stainless-steel reusable mesh filter, a coffee ground scooper and storage for your ground coffee. All of these elements pack away neatly inside the kettle element for easy travel, and it comes with a neat travel sleeve to keep it all safe. It also all comes in planet friendly plastic-free packaging.

You will need access to power to heat the water up obviously, or hot water if you just want to use the pour over filter and cup.

The only real downsides are the weight, as this is quite heavy for a travel item, although it is reassuringly solid and well built. It’s also at a fairly premium price point.

Capacity: 12oz / 340ml Weight: 3.76lbz / 1.7kg Type: pour over / filter Requires power? Yes Requires hot water? No Price: Check latest price on Amazon here

Uniterra Nomad Espresso Machine

Although this coffee maker is the heaviest option on this list (2.6lbs/1.18 kg), it is famous among the travel community for its innovation and spectacular tasting coffee! With optimized pressure, flow and temperature characteristics the Nomad produces a full rich crema that rivals even the best commercial machines.

travel coffee press australia

Here’s how it works; The seesaw motion of the small lever operates two tiny piston water pumps, building up pressure over a few strokes. That means you have got the ideal 8 to 10 bars of brewing pressure at your fingertips. You can pull a perfect shot each and every time with the help of the True Crema Valve.

You can adjust the pumping speed to produce optimal brewing pressure, giving you total control. It functions like a true lever machine while simplifying the operation and increasing the success rate of what’s involved in pulling a shot of great espresso.

This travel coffee maker is outdoor and environmentally friendly and it produces minimum waste. You will need to carry your own mug though, so bear in mind that this travel coffee maker might be more suitable for road trips and for making coffee in an RV rather than for air travel and extended back country trips, as the weight is quite high.

Capacity: 10oz / 300ml Weight: 2.6lbs/1.18 kg Type: Espresso Requires power? No Requires hot water? Yes Price: Check latest price on Amazon here

Which Travel Coffee Maker Would You Recommend?

The answer to this will vary depending on your preference for coffee style. For us, we think that the AeroPress Go or Coffee Gator pour over travel cup are our favourite options. They’re both relatively inexpensive, easy to use, portable, and easy to clean. They also make great coffee!

If price and portability are your main criteria, then check out the Primula Single Serve Coffee Brew Buddy or JoGo CoffeeStraw . The latter in particular is super easy to use and only weighs an ounce!

If you absolutely must have espresso coffee on the go, then the Wacaco espresso maker is an excellent choice.

You can see the majority of the portable coffee makers and accessories in one place on Amazon here for easy comparison.

Coffee Accessories for Travel

Now you have your coffee maker all figured out, you might need some accessories to go with it. Your needs will vary depending on the coffee maker you purchase, but here are some options to consider.

Travel Coffee Mug: Contigo Stainless Steel Travel Mug

The Contigo is the ideal travel flask to keep your coffee hot while you enjoy your travels. The body is made from stainless steel for maximum durability, while the silicone band adds extra comfort while holding.

travel coffee press australia

It can hold up to 16oz / 450 ml, which I think is more than enough to keep you going on your next adventure. It also includes a clever lid technology to ensure that the product is leak-proof for on-the-go activities and it can keep your drinks hot up to 5 hours or cold up to 12 with vacuum insulation.

If you are planning on taking a road trip, the Contigo travel mug fits most car cup holders. In terms of washing, the lid is dishwasher-safe, however the body is hand-wash-only.

Travel Coffee Grinder: JavaPresse Manual Coffee Grinder

Finding the perfect coffee grinder is no easy task. If you want the perfect cup of coffee, you need high quality materials, durability, and functionality in one.

travel coffee press australia

Thankfully the JavaPresse Manual Coffee Grinder is built to last, featuring a stainless steel body, a durable ceramic burr, and an adjustable grind selector for optimal results. This portable coffee grinder can be used anywhere, be it hiking, camping, backpacking or out on the open road.

It features a built-in adjustable grind selector so you can fine-tune it to get the coarseness you want.

Travel Milk Frother: Café Casa Milk Frother

This lightweight, hand-held, battery-operated device is designed specifically to produce perfect frothy milk in 15 seconds or less. It can be used to froth all types of milk, including cow, soya, rice, almond, coconut, UHT, and powdered milk, so you are guaranteed smooth, frothy coffee no matter what your taste.

travel coffee press australia

The head and shaft are both made from robust stainless steel. It is also easy to clean and maintain.

Travel Sized Kettle: Travel Foldable Electric Kettle

Travel coffee mugs aren’t the only foldable products on the market these days, now you can get collapsible kettles! This travel kettle provides readily accessible hot water on any continent, with support for both the US 110v standard and the European 240v standard.

travel coffee press australia

It is perfectly safe to use, with boil dry protection, and a sturdy lid lock to ensure scorch-free usage, while the concealed heating element eliminates those rusty metal coils.

Travel Water Heater

If you would like a way to heat water but don’t want to carry a whole kettle, consider an immersion heater. These basically take the heating element from a kettle, which you them immerse into the water you are heating up.

travel coffee press australia

The one we recommend is designed for travel, and supports both 120v and 240v supplies, making it ideal for world travel. It’s small and compact, and all you need is a power outlet and something like a mug for heating.

When using a device like this it is obviously important to carefully read and follow the directions for safety.

There’s no use having all of this equipment if you don’t have any actual coffee! There’s a huge range of coffee available today from all around the world, which comes in different formats depending on your requirements.

We recommend checking what type of coffee your coffee maker manufacturer recommends. Usually there will be a specific grind size for your coffee maker, or if it takes pods, a specific type of pod it is compatible with. Here are some quick links to different types of coffee to get you started:

  • Ground Coffee
  • Coffee Pods
  • Whole Coffee Beans

Finally, don’t discount instant coffee for those situations where you just don’t have any alternatives. We’ve had good results with the Starbucks Via range when road tripping and hiking – they are really lightweight, the coffee is good, and they even dissolve in cold water if you don’t have a stove or other heat source. Some of the Via range is specifically designed to make cold brew coffee.

Thank you very much for this compilation. I use the following alternatives for field trips: 1) Staresso portable coffee maker to prepare espresso; 2) PRESSE by Bobble French Coffee Press by Gamila Company; 3) Rivers brand reversible silicone coffee dripper cave. Greetings from the North of Chile.

When we travel, I use a small, cheap Black& Decker 5 cup drip coffee machine. I have found it even easier than a French press + cleaner is better.

Thanks for your input Fred, glad to hear your device works well for you and I hope your tip helps others as well!

Have you tried (and have comments on) the ESPRO Ultralight Travel Coffee Press?

5th April 2021 at 11:42 am

Hi Kathleen – I haven’t tried it and so don’t have personal experience. It has largely positive reviews and running the brand through Fakespot the reviews also appear genuine. So if you are after a French press style mug coffee maker it certainly looks like a good option. If you do purchase it I’d be happy to hear your opinion!

Hi there, great review of travel coffee makers. Do you know if the moka pot you recommend would work on a camp stove induction burner? Thanx!

29th April 2020 at 10:12 pm

Hi Juliette,

Thanks very much! According to the manufacturer it should work on an induction stove. There are some reviews suggesting it doesn’t, but the manufacturer says that that was an older model, and the new version which is on sale now is induction compatible. I have a number of CoffeeGator products, and they have always been very quick to respond to any questions when I’ve messaged them, so I would say that if for some reason it doesn’t work for you, I am sure they would help out 🙂

Let me know how it goes if you decide to go for it 🙂

We’ve provided the above travel coffee maker reviews to help you in your search for the perfect coffee maker, but if you want to keep shopping around, here are some things to know and pointers on how to choose the best travel coffee maker.

travel coffee maker

The first question to ask yourself is: how much coffee do I need? Second question: how many people do I need to provide coffee for? If you’re a solo traveler, getting a large travel coffee maker likely isn’t necessary. If you’re traveling in a big group – and everyone wants to enjoy their cup of coffee at relatively the same time – a small coffee maker won’t cut it. Brewing multiple batches to accommodate everyone will quickly become cumbersome and annoying.

Consider not just the size of the coffee maker itself but also the brewing capacity and weight. Obviously, the larger the contraption, the more it will weigh and the bulkier it will be to pack away. For a backpacker, this weight and space make a considerable difference. Whereas, for car camping, the weight of a medium-to-large travel coffee maker that has greater brewing capacity won’t be as big of a deterrent.

travel coffee maker

When choosing the best travel coffee maker for you, it’s important to consider how picky you are about the taste and quality of your coffee. Drip units, espresso makers and French press produce a cup of coffee that tastes different – even if you use the same type of coffee. The quality of the beans matter too, but not all coffee makers yield the same results.

Typically, a drip unit makes a more basic, less-intense cup of joe. French press and espresso machines usually result in a tastier and overall better quality cup of coffee. Consider what you prefer and what you’re used to and choose your coffee maker style accordingly.

Toughness

best travel coffee maker

How well is the device going to do after long-term abuse on the road? Consider how long you want (and need) your travel coffee maker to last and what you’re using it for. More economical coffee makers are usually plastic or include plastic parts – and are less durable. While stainless steel units are tougher and will last longer.

If you’re a backpacker that needs a coffee-making unit that will fold down and won’t break the bank, expect to get a plastic device that will do the trick for that trip. Whether or not it survives the abuse on the road can’t be guaranteed. For camping nomads that enjoy regular and frequent camping trips, investing in a tough, durable stainless steel travel coffee maker is probably the better way to go.

Parts vs Simplicity

travel coffee maker

Also consider this question: does the device have a lot of parts that could break? If so, can they be easily replaced? The more parts, the more likely your chances of losing or breaking a piece while on your travels.

If you’re really attached to your travel coffee maker – and finding replacement parts is fairly quick and simple – then the extra hassle of multiple parts could be worth it. But, if your travel style tends to be less organized and rugged, you should consider getting a simple device with as few extra parts as possible.

Eco-Friendly

rei half dome 2 tent

Does the device require filters? Many espresso units do not require filters and some coffee presses have a silicone filter built-in – however – some do require paper filters. Be sure to know what the requirements are. Take the opportunity to bash the Keurig/Nespresso pods as an extreme environmental danger.

The more dependence your unit has on paper filters, the more wasteful and less eco-friendly it is. A device that has a reusable filter – or doesn’t require a filter at all – is much better for the environment. As a nature-loving nomad, leaving the smallest carbon footprint possible is always more ideal.

Price

How often will you use your travel coffee maker? If the answer is often, then buying a high-quality one – or the one you really want – will be worth splashing out a little extra cash for. Most travel units aren’t that expensive to begin with, and getting the quality cup of java you need to kickstart your travel days the right way will be worth it.

Also, think about the money you save by making your own coffee while traveling versus buying individual cups at cafes. With extended and frequent use, the unit will eventually pay for itself.

Power vs No Power

best tents for backpacking

Typically, one should always go for a travel coffee maker that does not require electricity – that is why there are no powered coffee makers on our list. This is especially true for backcountry campers or backpackers who enjoy spending time the most remote places possible. Not having to find or bring along an extra source of electricity to power up your coffee machine will save a lot of hassle.

There are plenty of good travel coffee makers that produce delicious, high-quality coffee that don’t require power. We highly recommend sticking to those when making your final selection.

Still have some questions? No problem! We’ve listed and answered the most commonly asked questions below. Here’s what people usually want to know:

Is the AeroPress the best coffee maker?

The AeroPress is a great coffee maker for one cup of coffee, but we’re big fans of the GSI Outdoors Java Press . They both offer great value, but the Java press has a bigger capacity.

What do you need to consider when choosing a coffee maker?

Keep these key features in mind: 1. Size, Quality and Toughness 2. Parts and Simplicity 3. Price

What is the best travel coffee maker for solo travellers?

Since a single person won’t need endless ounces of coffee (at least it’s not recommended), the AeroPress Go Travel Coffee Press is the perfect choice for solo travellers.

What is the best travel coffee maker for large groups?

When travelling with your friends, opt for the GSI Outdoors Glacier Stainless Steel 14-Cup Percolator . It’s got a liquid capacity of 112 fl.oz. which is plenty enough for multiple backpackers.

I Lived Out of a Backpack for 2 Years on Working Holidays, and These Are the 17 Items I Relied on — From $8

They come everywhere with me now.

Travel + Leisure / Madison Woiten

Working holiday visas allow travelers between the ages of 18 and 35 to dip a toe into life abroad by spending a year or more in a foreign country — and even earning a paycheck while they’re at it. For me, this was the only way that I could afford to travel in my 20s. I quit my corporate job, found someone to take over my lease in West Los Angeles, packed some necessities into a 70-liter backpack, and booked a one-way flight to New Zealand .

Naturally, I clung to the few items that I took with me — things that gave me comfort or served an essential purpose like keeping my phone charged and my travel photos safeguarded — during the two-year period that I was abroad. The experience was filled with life-altering challenges and adventures, and in true nomad fashion, I bounced from job to job as I made my way from Auckland to the ski bum villages and remote rainforests of the South Island, up to Sydney, around the Australian Outback, down to Tasmania, and back up to the hipster neighborhoods of Melbourne; I worked as a farmhand, a housekeeper, and even as a painter, all while living out of a backpack and traveling around in a camper van .

From my favorite pair of shorts to a packable coffee maker that I couldn't have functioned without, here are the 17 things that I’m glad I had with me on my working holidays in New Zealand and Australia.

Osprey Aura AG 65 Pack

I didn’t have an Osprey pack when I started traveling, and boy, did I suffer the consequences. My original bag quickly started falling apart, ripping at the seams, and losing its shape. So, I switched to this classic Osprey bag and — *big sigh of relief* — life got easier. These packs help keep your things stacked up on your hips with their weight-distributing waist strap instead of weighing on your back, and my Osprey Aura AG 65 is one of the most comfortable bags I’ve tried. It's also equipped with tons of useful pockets and compartments, so it's basically a Mary Poppins bag for backpackers.

Mregb Solar Power Bank

Between jobs, I squeezed in as much time in the great Australasian wild as possible — with no way to charge my devices but a portable solar power bank. All you have to do is leave this thing in the sun (and rest assured, there’s plenty of sun down under), and it’ll keep the juice flowing to your phone, headphones, tablet, and other electronics for as long as you want to stay out there. What's more, it also has a built-in flashlight and it's waterproof.

Hydro Flask 32-ounce Water Bottle

A durable water bottle is a must for exploring the arid Outback and working on farms in one of the hottest, driest places on Earth. Find one that you love and won’t forget in the seat-back pocket of the plane or on the floor of a long-tail boat in Thailand (guilty), and you're good to go. My Hydro Flask kept liquids surprisingly cold and made me actually, for the first time ever, want to drink water. And, it's spill-proof, which was a welcomed feature for someone on the move.

Merrell Moab 3 Hiking Shoes

I traveled for three years straight with these trusty Merrell hiking shoes — the original Moab style, now on its third iteration — and they never failed me. They stood up against damp, fern-flanked trails in the New Zealand rainforest, on snowy and icy peaks in the Southern Alps, and on the sandy land of Uluru in Australia’s Red Center. I also worked in them almost daily without any pain or discomfort. Whether you're on a working holiday or tackling a local trail, these shoes are up for any adventure.

Epicka Universal Travel Power Adapter

Having a universal power adapter kept me from juggling too many small accessories and was especially helpful for traveling to Southeast Asia and Europe directly from Australia. This one plug fits into any socket, no matter where you are, and can charge up to six devices at once with its all-in-one design. Plus, it hardly takes up any space in your pack.

Prana Salt Kissed Crop Rash Guard

Okay, a rash guard is the one thing that I didn’t bring, but desperately wish that I had. The ozone layer over Australia and New Zealand is especially thin, which means that more UV rays can reach your skin — even though the sun feels the same as it always does. This combined with the beach culture down under means that Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world. In addition to piling on the sunscreen, I recommend covering up with a rash guard like this one by Prana; it offers UPF 50+ sun protection and is comfortable to wear on the shore and in the water.

RuMe Foldable Reusable Shopping Tote

Both New Zealand and Australia are famously against single-use plastic bags. Almost everyone brings their own totes to the grocery store (it's the best practice no matter where you go), so I had to come prepared with my own reusable bag. True, you can buy one when you arrive at your destination, but you might not find one as lightweight and packable as this Amazon-loved one; it only weighs 4 ounces and folds down to 5.5 inches by 2 inches so it doesn't take up too much space in your bag. When I wasn't grocery shopping, it was good to have handy when I needed a makeshift tote, wet bag, laundry bag, and so on.

Sea to Summit X Brew Collapsible Coffee Dripper

A quality cup of joe was not easy to come by on the rural farms that I’ve worked on — or even in the hostels. Call me crazy, but because of my working holidays, I now travel with my own kit so I'm never without my precious morning java. After trying lots of different coffee makers on the road, from mini percolators to portable presses, I’ve found that a collapsible dripper is the easiest, cleanest, and most packable option. This one comes with a reusable stainless-steel mesh filter, and shoppers say that it " collapses down to almost nothing " and is " absolutely the best way to brew coffee on the trail ."

Patagonia Outdoor Everyday Shorts

You never really know what kind of job you’re going to end up with as a backpacker, or what you’ll need to wear while doing it. These Patagonia shorts were good for almost anything that the road could have thrown at me. They’re much more durable and work-ready than your average athletic shorts, and they dry quickly, have lots of pockets, and can be worn casually when there's downtime; I’ve worn them straight from a morning of vineyard work onto a hiking trail.

Seagate Portable External Hard Drive

If you plan to travel with electronics — I brought my laptop and a point-and-shoot camera — it’s a good idea to back up your data in case anything happens to your devices while you’re abroad. Things can get stolen or broken, and you don't want these circumstances to be why you lose all of your precious travel photos and important documents. Or, if you’re like me and your storage is perpetually full, you also won’t have to spend so much time offloading. Enter: the Seagate Portable External Hard Drive; it comes in four sizes, is able to store 1 to 5 terabytes of data, and is super compact for easy packing.

Spinbrush Pro Clean Battery-powered Toothbrush

Here's a PSA to all electric toothbrush users: Even if you buy a toothbrush that’s compatible with local outlets, you will certainly not always have a place to charge it. That being said, I now travel with this battery-powered toothbrush and plenty of head replacements; it’s not as bulky as a full electric toothbrush setup and still gets the job done. Not to mention that it's easy to replace if I forget it or misplace it.

REI Co-op Ruckpack 18 Recycled Daypack

A small daypack is handy for flights and short hikes. This 18-liter one by REI Co-op has held up to years of wear and tear — it’s seen the wet bottoms of kayaks, multiple major sunscreen and bug spray spills, and too many trails to count. The recycled ripstop nylon is surprisingly durable, and the padded straps are comfortable on my shoulders for long periods of time. I'm also a fan of the hip strap that equally distributes the weight of the backpack to alleviate pressure on my bag.

Lena Sensitive Menstrual Cup

Packing a reusable menstrual cup is an absolute must for anyone with a period traveling long-term. When I started traveling, there was only one main menstrual cup brand, but shoppers now have dozens upon dozens to choose from. My only advice: find one you like before you go traveling. I'm a fan of this one from Lena, which is leak-proof for up to 12 hours, sensation-free (meaning that you can't feel it once it's inserted), and specially designed for those who struggle with bladder sensitivities, cramps, and more.

Revolut Multi-currency Card

I'll admit that I am a negligent financial planner when it comes to travel rewards and multi-currency cards, but this (free!) Revolut card saved me from a boatload of transaction fees. You can hold, transfer, and convert your money into up to 140 currencies, keeping multiple currencies on your card at once. It’s free to transfer to other Revolut accounts, and I found the conversion fees to be reasonable (they're usually under 1 percent).

Patagonia Lightweight Synchilla Snap-T Fleece Pullover

This pullover is possibly the warmest thing that I own. It saved me from traveling to cooler climates with super-bulky coats and sacrificing precious luggage space to them. I loved my first one so much that I now have it in three different colors. It’s made with ultra-light recycled polyester fleece and has a snap-button collar. The breast pocket is tiny — it has a more fashionable purpose than a functional one — but gives the pullover a cute pop of color and a crisp look to wear all around town.

Laundry Detergent Sheets

One of the best hacks that I have for long-term travel is to pack some laundry detergent sheets so you don’t have to purchase those overpriced mini boxes of detergent at the laundromat. Buying a full-sized jug of detergent is simply out of the question when you're backpacking, and as a bonus, these Tru Earth laundry strips are much better for the environment. A pack of 32 is good for 64 loads of laundry — a standard cycle takes only half a strip!

Ubeesize Portable Phone Tripod

Unless you bring a full camera setup, you’ll probably be documenting your travels with your phone. It can be tough to get pictures of yourself when you’re alone, but I was able to easily get the shot with this portable tripod. Its flexible legs are good for balancing on uneven surfaces and it's easy to use; once you get it set up and in the right spot, just set the delay timer on your phone camera and strike a pose.

Travel French Press  Buyer’s Guide

Below are important things to consider to help you choose the ideal companion for your on-the-go caffeine needs.

Size and Capacity

The first thing to consider when buying a travel French press is the size and capacity. Travel French presses come in different sizes ranging from small (8 oz) to large (34 oz) capacities.

Consider how many cups of coffee you want to brew at once and choose a size accordingly. Remember that a larger capacity also means a bigger and heavier French press, which may not be ideal for traveling.

Using Travel French Press

Material and Durability

As you gear up for your travel adventures, it’s also wise to have a safety net in place with travel insurance.

Now, turning our attention back to the French press itself, the material and durability are crucial considerations.

Most travel French presses are made of stainless steel or BPA-free plastic. Stainless steel is a great choice as it is lightweight, durable, and retains heat well.

BPA-free plastic may be a good option if you’re looking for a lighter and more budget-friendly option, but it may not have the same durability as stainless steel. Consider your personal preferences and choose a material that suits your needs.

Insulation and Heat Retention

If you like your coffee to stay hot for longer, consider a travel French press with insulation. Double-wall insulation helps to retain heat and keep your coffee warm for hours.

Some models even come with additional features like vacuum insulation, which provides even better heat retention.

Insulation is vital for outdoor enthusiasts who want to enjoy hot coffee during camping or hiking trips.

Filter Design

Travel French Press tips

The filter design of a travel French press is another factor to consider.

Most travel French presses use a stainless steel mesh filter that allows the natural oils in the coffee to pass through, resulting in a fuller-bodied and flavorful cup of coffee.

However, some models may have a finer mesh or additional layers of filters to prevent any coffee grounds from escaping into your cup. Consider your preference for sediment in your coffee and choose a filter design accordingly.

Portability and Ease of Use

One of the primary purposes of a travel French press is its portability, so consider how easy and convenient it is to carry around.

Look for features like a compact size, detachable parts for easy cleaning and packing, and a secure lid to prevent any spills or leaks during transportation.

Some models also include additional features like a built-in mug or a storage compartment for extra coffee grounds, which can enhance the overall portability and ease of use.

Final thoughts

Whether you’re a seasoned outdoor enthusiast or a casual camper, these travel French presses will ensure that every sunrise brings with it the aroma and taste of a perfect brew right in the heart of the wilderness.

So, grab your gear, pack your sense of adventure, and bring one of these top-rated presses for a rich and satisfying cup of coffee on your travels.

Moscow and St. Petersburg present a new tourist pass

travel coffee press australia

Russia has introduced a new tourist pass called PassCity , which will be of use not only to foreign travelers who have come to Russia for a few days, but also to students from overseas and expatriates whose stay extends to a few months and more. PassCity has apps available for Android and iOS with free audio guides in English and Chinese.

PassCity has become Russia's first pass which is valid in two cities at once and covers all the major museums of Moscow and St. Petersburg. The price for a tourist pass for 3/5/7/10 days varies from $80 (1 person, 3 days - 5190 rubles ) to $230 (2 people, 10 days - 14,390 rubles ). A 90/180/360-day pass costs from $ 64 (1 person, 90 days -  3990 rubles  ) to $160  (2 people, 360 days - 9990 rubles ).  The package for several days was designed for tourists and includes an unlimited number of museum visits per day, as well as public transit. The 3/6/12-month card is meant for temporary residents of the cities and covers one museum visit a day, without access to public transit.

Apart from admission to museums, the pass gets you free coffee in the DoubleB chain of coffee shops , several trips on the airport express in Moscow, and subway rides in St. Petersburg or by taxi ordered through the Yandex.Taxi service.

For the practical and the cautious

The Voxxter team spent more than two years developing the pass; while working on it, they established partnerships with Mastercard, Yandex.Money , Yandex.Taxi (a Russian taxi service similar to Uber ), and DoubleB , a popular chain of coffee shops in St. Petersburg and Moscow.

PassCity is as easy to use as a regular credit card: It uses the Mastercard payment system, and the chosen package of services is activated upon purchase. You can deposit money on the card and use it to pay for other goods and services: Using an extra credit card instead of your primary card when traveling is a sensible security measure.

Cards are delivered through a system that has recently gained popularity among Internet banks. "You can order the pass online or through the app, and our courier will deliver it where and when you decide, for instance, your hotel, or the railway station where the airport express arrives. Our customers have confirmed that this is a lot more convenient than having to look for a sales office in an unknown city," explains Maksim Ivlev, Voxxter CEO.

Voxxter believes the pass could be useful for tourists who come to Russia to watch upcoming sporting events, including the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

American influencer apologises for ‘offending’ Australia with hilarious Milo incident

An American social media star promises he is a Milo pro now after being absolutely roasted by Aussies for making this hilarious mistake.

An TikTok star from the United States has hilariously apologised for “offending the entire country of Australia” by the way he opened a tin of Milo.

Colt Paulsen wanted to share his reaction to trying a Tim Tam slam for the first time but made the huge mistake of innocently taking a can opener to his Milo tin – horrifying Australian viewers.

Paulsen did not realise he had done anything wrong until Aussies flooded the comments of his video declaring their souls left their bodies and that it was painful to watch.

“Genuinely, I thought I was getting trolled because all of the comments saying ‘I cannot believe you just opened a Milo with a can opener’,” he told news.com.au.

“Because in my mind, it’s the same size as a can of soup and it’s metal, like, I wouldn’t have expected to open it any other way.”

Paulsen then posted a follow-up video pleading for an explanation.

“I could not wrap my head around how I was doing anything incorrect,” he said.

“And now I am so embarrassed of documenting my biggest blonde moment ever. I don’t think I will be able to ever do a Tim Tam slam again without being triggered.”

He followed that up with a video apologising to “the entire country of Australia and New Zealand, and any neighbouring continent” for his actions.

Paulsen, whose online moniker ‘Gay Man with a Spray Tan’ has more than 1 million TikTok followers, assured news.com.au he quickly became well-versed in the world of Milo.

“I feel like I offended the entire continent all while bringing everyone together,” he said.

“Thanks to the thousands of people that stitched my video showing me the correct way to open a Milo.

“I feel like I’m a Milo pro! I’m ready to make the Milo sandwich. I’ve even been eating Milo straight out of the tin with just a spoon.”

He went as far as putting his hand up for Milo ambassador.

Just days after rubbing shoulders with Kylie and Kris Jenner last month, Paulsen – who has a partnership with Australian born company Bondi Sands as ‘Chief Tanning Officer’ – flew to Australia for the first time.

Despite having to take the longest flight he had ever been on, Paulsen said he had the time of his life in Melbourne.

“It surprisingly reminded me of New York City but cleaner and tanner,” he said.

It wasn’t just Milo he tried for the first time either.

“I’m obsessed with the V energy drinks. My favourite snacks are (Arnott’s) Shapes. They are so addictive, and I can’t get enough of all the Caramilk chocolates. Like, I tried a candy bar with pop rocks. I was so shook,” he said.

Of course, he also tried Melbourne’s famous coffee.

“It’s so good and the baristas are so much hotter,” he said. “Our coffee doesn’t even compare. It’s so watered down.”

He added: “Vegemite is still on my list of Australian delicacies to try. But, before I do that, I’m not having a repeat and will be doing my research.”

Paulsen couldn’t understand what he had done wrong when he saw all the comments at first, and vows do his research before trying vegemite. Picture: TikTok / @gaymanwithaspraytan

Paulsen, who is from Los Angeles, said the most surprising part of his trip Down Under was realising there were not kangaroos just jumping through Melbourne, and he had to visit Melbourne Zoo to see them.

He was also taken aback by the our different names for things.

“The different slang I think was my favourite part realising like a parking garage is called a car park or trash cans are called bins,” he said.

“What’s really confusing is that in the word Melbourne, Australians don’t pronounce the ‘r’ but when it comes to saying the word no they add an ‘r’ so it sounds like ‘naur’. It’s my favourite thing.”

Paulsen said now that he had accidentally managed to reach millions of Aussies, he wants them to know he is “obsessed” and can’t wait to come back.

“ … and I hope you can forgive me. I LOVE YOU MATE!” he said.

A restaurant chain has left many baffled over the way it greets its customers — and on top of that, they’re also demanding tips.

An American man shared his unusual way of opening a Milo tin, causing Aussies to erupt in fury.

An Aussie couple were “absolutely shocked” when they realised how much they had forked out for two burgers and chips at their hotel.

People travel to Oklahoma for eclipse from as far as Australia and India

IDABEL, Okla. ( KSLA /Gray News) — People from all parts of the globe came to the southeast Oklahoma town of Idabel to experience the Great American Eclipse’s path of totality.

Retired science teacher and eclipse expert Glenn Hughes, of Sydney, Australia, was originally planning to watch from Dallas, but came to Idabel at the last minute due to the fog.

“It’s going to be mind blowing. It’s like someone goes, ‘Bang!’, and the lights turn off. The cars will have to turn their headlights on, streetlights are going to come on, and if it’s cloudy, it’s going to be even darker than usual,” Hughes, who’s seen eight eclipses in his lifetime, said before Monday’s event.

He’s been interested in eclipses since he was 8 years old in Australia.

“You have to wait to see it if you’ve never seen one. It’s just amazing how the lights go out,” Hughes added.

Hughes’ grandsons, Freddy and Zack Beck, also of Sydney, Australia, were with him.

“A long journey. There was quite a bit of panic in the car from Dallas, where we were visiting our grandparents,” Freddy Beck said.

“I’m looking forward to when it’s totality,” Zach Beck said.

One man came to Idabel from India, via San Diego and Dallas.

“I’m from a farmer’s family, and the ranches and the houses are so beautiful here,” he remarked. “My daughter was asking me to purchase something!”

He said he has seen both solar and lunar eclipses throughout his lifetime.

“The total atmosphere is totally enchanted by this eclipse. So many cars, and families and small children. And there are very big binoculars and machinery they’re using to cover the eclipse,” he said. “This is very encouraging to me, also. I have taken a few clips and I’m going to show the eclipse to my friends so that they can also get encouragement.”

Malin, another visitor from India, landed in Dallas on Sunday, but wound up in Idabel. He’s seen many eclipses across the world and gathered information on this one for eight years.

“I am expecting people literally cheering. They go crazy,” Malin said.

“The temperature drops at least 10 to 15 degrees Fahrenheit. I have seen it. It drops. Birds start chirping, going back to the nest, something like that.”
