Since it's not the newest model, it's usually on sale.

It's best for entertainment rather than intense productivity.

Some planes aren't equipped with built-in in-flight entertainment systems, which means you should probably bring a tablet on your next trip . We're partial to the Apple iPad, specifically, not the latest model for one simple reason: it's usually on sale. Unless you plan on working from your iPad, in which case you'd probably want to upgrade to something more powerful or even a laptop, this one will do just fine for things like watching movies and shows. It'll still work for other tasks where a screen larger than a phone comes in handy, like sending email, making notes, and even taking photos.

And, for travelers, it's fairly lightweight for a DSLR, and it has a long battery life. Just know that it’s on the more expensive side if you’re just dabbling and the price does not include any lenses.

Never mind that having all of this organized makes skating through security more seamless, too.

If you're shopping for a tech case for travel, there are a few things to think about, such as which devices you need to store, how much space you have in your personal item or luggage, price points, and the kinds of features you're focused on, like waterproofing and padding. Are you looking for something that can protect your gear in the great outdoors or look sleek in a business setting? Do you need to store a hard drive, an external battery, or a tablet? Should you get a full-on backpack or a smaller travel case just to harness your cords?

You shouldn't wash, dry clean, or tumble dry the pouch; instead, you can scrub it with a soft brush and warm water.

Taking your laptop on your next trip? Don’t forget the extras! We’re not just talking about the power cord, especially if you’re headed overseas — computer accessories you may need to pack include converters, adapters, wireless Internet cards, Ethernet cables, surge protectors and, of course, a sturdy carrying case.

This list may seem overwhelming, but most of these laptop accessories serve one of two purposes: to provide a power supply for your computer or to connect it to the Internet. Which of these accessories will you need? Read on to find out.

1. Electrical Converters and Adapters If you’re traveling overseas, you’ll need to consider international differences in voltage, and then deal with the different sizes and shapes of the plugs. The United States and Canada use 110-volt electricity, while most of the rest of the world runs 220 – 240 volts. While this is an issue for many appliances such as hair driers or camera chargers, most modern laptops are capable of running on both 110- and 220-volt currents. Check the label and/or owner’s manual on your computer to be sure. If your computer only runs on 110 volts, you’ll need to purchase a converter to prevent damage to your machine.

Even if you don’t need a converter, you will most likely need an adapter to enable your plug to fit into the local outlet. Almost every country has one or more adapters that may be unique or that it shares with a few close neighbors. 2. Connecting at Your Hotel: Wireless Notebook Cards to Ethernet Cables Most hotels geared toward business travelers offer some form of Internet access, whether it’s high-speed or wireless. Call ahead to determine what will be available so that you know what equipment you’ll need to bring with you. Here’s a rundown of the options:

Wireless Internet: Often called Wi-Fi, wireless Internet access is growing increasingly common around the world, especially in hotels that cater to business travelers. If you have a relatively new laptop, you may not need to bring any equipment at all — practically all modern machines have wireless network adapters already built in, so all you have to do is plug your computer in and it will search out the nearest wireless signal. (Most hotels will require a password to access their signal — ask at the front desk.)

If your laptop doesn’t have an internal wireless network adapter, you can buy a wireless notebook card from any computer supplier, such as Best Buy or CompUSA.

High-Speed Internet: Some hotels require you to plug into their high-speed Internet connection using an Ethernet cable. We recommend bringing your own cable just in case, as the hotel may or may not able to supply one for you. To connect to a high-speed network, you’ll need a network interface card (NIC), which most laptops have already installed. If yours doesn’t, you can purchase one from your local computer supplier.

3. Connecting on the Road: Mobile Broadband Card If you’re equipped for wireless Internet, you’re in luck — you can find Wi-Fi hot spots in airports, coffee shops, libraries and many other facilities around the world. While you’ll usually have to pay for this service, sometimes you’ll luck out and find a free hot spot. For more information, read How to Find Better Travel Wi-Fi .

If you’re traveling within the U.S., you may be able to connect to the Internet through your cell phone provider’s network — you just slide a mobile broadband card into your laptop and then you can surf the Web from anywhere your cell phone provider has service. There’s usually a monthly charge, and you’ll have to purchase the card from your cell phone provider. Plans are available from most major cell phone providers, including AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon.

4. Surge Protection You have a surge protection electrical strip on your desktop computer; you should have the same for your portable. In countries where electrical delivery is less reliable, this is all the more important. You’ll need one for whichever voltage you’ll be using; surge protectors for 110- and 220-volt currents are not interchangeable.

5. Carrying Case No matter how careful you are carrying your computer around, it’s going to take a few hits while you scurry around airports, hop in and out of airport shuttle buses, pile stuff into overhead bins, or fall asleep slumped over your work on the plane. A sturdy padded carrying case can save you a lot of aggravation and even more money.

6. Optional Extras It’s a good idea to bring along a device onto which you can back up your work, just in case your hard drive crashes while you’re away. We like flash drives, which are smaller than a finger and plug directly into your USB port, but you can also back up your work onto CD’s as long as your computer has a CD burner.

Many people like to pack a mouse and portable keyboard to make long-term work on a laptop more comfortable. It may also be worth packing an extra laptop battery just in case you find yourself away from a power source for a long period of time.

The anti-shake, one-axis stabilizer allows you to capture smooth videos and crisp photos of your travels without having to think about keeping your hands perfectly still and balanced. One perk of this particular stabilizer is that it doesn’t have a corresponding app that you need to use to make the device work, so you can just pop your phone onto the handle and go. Beyond simply picking out a carrier that fits the device , be sure to also look at the materials used to support the outside and inside, the ease of carry , and the shock absorption of the accessory.

While there are similarities between the carriage of a PC tower and the other components that come with computing, sometimes the needs and capabilities to do so are different. When these differences are significant enough, this guide will highlight those differences.

Materials — Inside & Out

The exterior of PC travel accessory bags is usually a soft, water-resistant material that is built tough to resist wear and snags. This soft material will help avoid pain from repeatedly bumping into the skin. Sometimes, smaller accessories skip this part and simply provide a harder exterior. This is because these carrying cases are meant to be put in a backpack or other carrying case and aren't so focused on protecting from the harshest outdoor elements.

Some cases have a hard layer to protect the device from crushing damage. This is more typical for smaller cases made for gamers' favorite mechanical gaming keyboard or mouse. Where PC towers already have a hard exterior shell, letter keys, and mouse buttons are more likely to take damage in transit.

The interiors are typically made up of nylon , a lightweight but strong material that is often used in luggage. Nylon is non-conductive , so it is often used in electronics products but can have some static issues. As a result, users may wish to carry their hard drives in a special carrying case .

There are several carrying styles used by PC travel accessories. Factor in stature, strength, and predicted walking distances when evaluating a carry style for PC accessories. Also, if traveling with other stuff (clothes, etc.), don't zero in so much on carrying a PC that the essentials like clothes are forgotten. In any event, here are the likely things most gamers will encounter and what to know about each one:

• Handle: The most basic style of carriage. Since the materials in a carrying case are usually quite light, that won't be an issue, but the PC tower on the inside might add quite a lot of weight. Be sure the handle is made of a comfortable material.
• Backpack Loops: Backpack style carriage is nice for saving a hand, but can have other issues. Typical school backpacks push the books down, keeping a low center of gravity, where PC tower backpacks tend to go high and raise the center of gravity. Shorter, lightweight people may struggle with this type of case.
• Handle and Wheels: The best carrying style for avoiding dealing with heavier weights. If traveling over gravel or uneven surfaces, it is still advised to carry off the ground to avoid unnecessary jostling.

Shock Absorption

The final piece of the puzzle is shock absorption. The soft interior takes care of part of it, but that doesn't account for the whole story.

Interior shock absorption is aided by straps, tightening belts, and (if the travel accessory is meant to hold multiple components) having separate compartments for each component. Foam inserts and choosing a carrying case that fits snuggly around a PC tower further help. We have mixed thoughts on AirTags, but if you have an iPhone, they are among the best ways to keep a digital eye on your bags. These trackers utilize the sheer number of iPhones and Apple devices out there to regularly report their location back to your device. Even if you don't plan on checking your bag, you might end up having to gate-check it on crowded flights. Drop an AirTag into an interior pocket to make sure you and your luggage are reunited at your destination.

AirTags don't work with Android devices, so if you use an Android phone , our recommendation is the Chipolo One ($25) . We have more details about it in our Best Trackers guide , but the setup is simple, and you can even get alerts if you leave the house without it.

Catch Some Z’s

I've never been one to fall asleep on a plane. It's not that the audience bothers me—I'll never see these people again—but rather that it’s impossible to fall asleep in a near-vertical seat. The Travelrest ( 9/10, WIRED Recommends ) is the ultimate neck pillow because it remedied this problem. Thanks to its high, contoured sides and a flat back that keeps it square against the seat, I can reliably nod off on any flight. Some countries have less reliable electrical infrastructure, and you never know how well-wired that discount hotel's outlets are. I haven't had to test that aspect of it, but the two USB-A ports are convenient when I've had to charge earbuds, battery banks, and other accessories.

A Better Pillow

Hotel pillows tend to have all the firmness and support of a wet roll of toilet paper that's been stomped on for 30 minutes. That tends to mean that vacation memories are accompanied by a stiff neck. Side sleepers like me need a firm yet poofy pillow. I've caught more good nights of sleep on this Therm-a-Rest than I can count. It rolls up into an integrated pouch, and a cinch compresses it into the size of a large water bottle for storage.

Tip the Scales

A scale is handy to have when you're packing a heavy bag for an upcoming trip. Avoid those enormous surcharges and make sure your bag is under the airlines’ weight limits before you arrive at the check-in counter. International airlines are sticklers for carry-on weight, and even US airlines will be unforgiving about the weight of checked bags. I've used this scale for years, and I prefer the simplicity of not needing any batteries. It's accurate, easy to read the gauge, and the strap is strong enough in the long term to handle some seriously heavy luggage without fraying or breaking.

Travel through enough airports without a case and it’s only a matter of time before a bare laptop or tablet picks up nasty scratches and dents. In much of the world, mosquitoes aren't just pests. They carry life-threatening diseases such as malaria, dengue fever, and Japanese encephalitis. Even in hotel rooms in certain places, you're not safe from them. When I traveled through Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos last year, I brought this mosquito bed net with me. It's large enough for most two-person mattresses, and an elastic rim tucks underneath the mattress so that there are no gaps for critters to sneak through. The World Health Organization says a minimum of 156 holes per square inch are needed to keep mosquitoes out. This model has 500 tiny holes per square inch, making it that much more secure.

A Good Book, or 20

There's nothing like tackling a long ride on a train or plane with a good old book. But if you're a voracious reader or traveling on a long trip, a few books can take up a lot of room in your luggage. More of us are taking our four-legged pals with us on our journeys these days, but the trials of travel are no easier on them than they are on us. WIRED senior reviews editor Julian Chokkattu loves this pet carrier for how stable and soft its base is. He says the straps are thicker than most competing bags, and they stayed on his shoulder securely. You can clip a leash to the built-in carabiner, and there's a small stash pocket for poo bags. The best part is how well-ventilated it is, and there are multiple ways to open the bag and check on your pet. It's compliant with most major airlines’ policies.

Make Yourself Understood

It's tough to learn a new language, especially if it's just for a vacation booked a few months in advance. But you really should know the basics of conversation to be a good guest. WIRED contributor Christopher Null reviewed the Pocketalk Plus Voice Translator ( 7/10, WIRED Review ), which translates conversations between different languages in real time. He praised how reasonably quickly it provided translations, its intuitive interface, and the number of supported languages. This kind of device makes sense only if you're traveling to multiple destinations in a year. Otherwise, you can probably get by with Google Translate.

Connect the Unconnected

Love your wireless earbuds but hate that you can't connect them to the screen embedded in the airplane seat in front of you? The AirFly is a Bluetooth adapter that plugs into a standard headphone jack and connects to your wireless buds. I used the AirFly SE model, and I found no noticeable change in audio quality, at least from a few feet away when I took it on a flight. You get volume control buttons so you don't have to tap on the screen, and a double-tap mutes the audio too. Twelve South claims 20 hours of battery life, and although battery life can differ based on usage, it felt like a pretty accurate estimate in my experience watching movies and listening to music on the plane.

For Chilly Flights and Nights

You can't count on your hotel being as warm as you might like, and don't get me started on how cold they keep airplane cabins. Forget the scratchy blankets they sell on board and bring this lightweight, packable travel blanket if you're prone to the chills. I like how my feet fit in the “leg pockets,” my hands in the hand warmers, and how securely it stays around my neck with the button snap. The zippered pocket was perfectly sized for my AirPod case and for at least a few of those free snacks I felt like saving for later. It's also a great blanket to bring for road trips, in case you plan on sleeping in the car.

Don't Forget the Toothpaste

Consider this alternative to conventional toothpaste, especially if you find yourself butting up against the TSA's 3-1-1 rule . WIRED reviewer Medea Giordano enjoyed these toothpaste tablets while she was running tests for her Best Electric Toothbrushes guide. You just bite down on them and start brushing. You also get bonus points for reducing the amount of plastic waste you'd otherwise generate via toothpaste tubes—the packaging here is all glass bottles and compostable pouches.

Stay Hydrated

Travel, especially air travel, puts you in a bit of a bind when it comes to cutting down on your usage of single-use plastics. While you can't show up at the airport with your own drinks, you can do your part after you've passed through security. In my search for the best travel mugs , this Hydro Flask Coffee Mug came out on top. It's insulated, so it'll keep your coffee warm for longer than any flight. It's narrow enough to fit any cupholder, and no matter how much I banged it around, the tough powder-coated metal showed neither a scratch nor a dent. Unlike many water bottle manufacturers who use lead in their bottle construction , Hydro Flask has been lead-free since 2013.

Get Steamed

Hotels often have an iron and ironing board available, but I find it quicker and easier to steam my clothes. WIRED reviewer Medea Giordano and I both have been using Urpowers for years. For a tiny thing, it's powerful and effective at steaming practically anything in a minute or two. You just need to refill it often; one reservior is enough for one or two garments, at most. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you.
