8 apps that will help track your travel expenses

Keeping track of travel expenses can be challenging. With paper receipts, email receipts and not being handed any receipt at times, it's important to be organized for both the business and leisure traveler.

Fortunately, for those who are not the best at having a good grasp on their expenses, there are many apps that can simplify your life. These apps help with expense reports, budgeting purposes, tax preparation and splitting expenses among friends.

With something for everyone, here are the best apps to help you keep track of your expenses.

TrabeePocket

TrabeePocket is a straightforward app that allows you to keep track of your expenses for a given trip. Before you even start your trip you can add all prepaid expenses to the "preparing" tab. This allows you to account for your flights and any tours you might have booked in advance. Once your trip begins you can easily add all additional travel expenses. You can categorize your expenses into eight different categories, but with the paid version, you can add as many additional categories as you want if you have very specific expenses you want to track. The free version also only allows you to track one currency per trip, but the paid version allows you to track multiple currencies in one trip file.

Not only will TrabeePocket serve as a place to file your expenses, it also helps you on the budgeting front as well. You can set a monthly budget and have your expenses track against that overall number. If you are earning income during your travel, you can also enter income to a specific trip expense.

One neat feature of this app is that you can take pictures and tie it to a specific expense. This is great for the backpacker or family traveler who wants to remember exactly what the expense was used for, or to keep track of trip suggestions. Business travelers can also use this feature by taking a picture of a receipt if it is needed for a corporate expense report.

Cost: Free; Upgraded version is $1.99 and includes some additional options (i.e., multiple currencies, additional categories, view and export expense report)

Trail Wallet

Trail Wallet is very similar to TrabeePocket, but unfortunately is not available to Android users. With this app, you can add as many categories as you want to separate expenses and everything is color coded to make the app more visually appealing. (Unlike TrabeePocket, you do not need to pay for an upgraded version to add more categories).

When you enter your travel expenses, you'll tie it to both a trip and a date. This allows you to view your expenses at a Month View or Trip View. You can also spread expenses across multiple dates so you can see your daily expenses for a certain trip. This is handy if you are on a daily budget to ensure you're not exceeding the amount you can spend on a particular day.

One nice feature of this app is that you can add as many currencies as you'd like within a certain trip. This comes in handy if you are paying in multiple currencies — for example, flight and hotel costs in USD, but food expenses in euros.

This app caters more toward individual or family travel as you cannot invite friends to add expenses. You can, however, take pictures of receipts and tie them to a specific expense, and then export the images — perfect for keeping all receipts or for business travelers for expense purposes.

Cost: Free for the first 25 expense items added to a single trip; Upgraded version is $4.99 which allows you to enter an unlimited number of expenses per trip.

Concur is one of the top expense programs for business travel. This app is definitely more involved then some of the others on the list, but it has all the bells and whistles for keeping your expenses fully organized. If you work for a large corporation, you might already find that this is the required app to use for your business expenses.

Expenses from corporate credit cards will automatically be uploaded and you can also manually add out-of-pocket expenses. For manually entered expenses, employees can take a picture of their receipt which will be included in their expense report. For the business traveler with many paper receipts during the week, this app helps ensure that all expenses are reimbursed properly.

If you run a small-business, this is a great platform for you and your employees to use as it allows you to manage expenses and prepare expense reports. When I worked for a large consulting company, I used this program on a weekly basis. Being able to keep track of my work expenses to ensure I was reimbursed with every amount paid out of pocket was huge. For solo and group travelers, this is not the app I suggest using as there is no need to pay the monthly fee as there are many other free apps available.

Cost: Fee depends on number of users and account type.

Tripcoin is a very simple app to use that will track all of your expenses against a particular trip. You can tie each expense to a specific category, enter a city location and a defined date and time. You can also include notes and a screen shot to keep better track of every purchase you make.

This app has an atheistically pleasing filter capability, where you can look at expenses between a given date, within a certain category, a type of payment method or within a particular country. There is also a real-time currency converter or you can set custom currency exchange rates if needed.

Best of all, you can automatically back up all of your data by enabling the Dropbox integration. With many of the other apps listed here, if you lose your phone or if your data gets wiped out, you will lose all of the expenses entered. If this does happen, with this specific app, all of your expenses are saved and can be re-imported.

Unfortunately, this app is only available for iPhone users.

SplitWise is one of my personal favorites and an app I've been using for years. If you are traveling in a group , this is the app for you. The best, and unique feature, is that you can have friends or family members join a group and everyone can enter all expenses incurred for the joint trip. The app will then itemize expenses and tell each individual how much they owe to make things equal. You can even designate which expenses should be split among certain individuals. Like most of the other apps, you can also take include a picture and notes for every expense entered.

I have used the app for friend and sibling trips, including bachelorette parties, group ski trips and even just day trips. Aside from travel expenses, you can even use it to split up expenses among roommates or just everyday purchases with friends.

Cost: Free; Upgraded version is $2.99/month ($29.99/year) which includes receipt scanning, currency conversion and more.

Tricount is a simple app, but a great choice for group travel . It works very similar to SplitWise where you can split expenses among multiple travelers in your group. Everyone can add their own expenses and designate the specific amount (or percentage) for each individual within the group. At the end of the trip, you'll then receive a breakdown of what everyone owes each other.

The app supports multiple currencies and allows you to take pictures of images or receipts to go along with every expense entered.

Cost: Free; Upgraded version is $0.99 and allows you to have an ad-free experience.

If keeping track of receipts is high on your priority list, then the Foreceipt app will be perfect for your needs. You can attach a receipt with all expenses entered and all images will automatically be saved to your Google Drive account. Additionally, all email receipts can be tracked as well by forwarding them directly to Foreceipt email address and including your unique ID.

Other features include the capability to batch upload bank transactions and downloading excel reports for tax return purposes — perfect for those who need to write off travel expenses.

Within the app, Foreceipt allows you to enter your income, bills and travel expenses to track against your overall budget. You can also tie all travel expenses to one of many pre-populated categories.

With these more involved capabilities, business travelers and those who own small businesses will probably find this app more useful than solo or group travelers.

Cost: Free; Upgraded version is $3.99/month ($38.99/year) and includes more receipts scans per month, email receipts and expense reports.

Expensify caters toward both individual and group travelers traveling primarily for business. This app allows you to complete all the simple tasks such as documenting your expenses and taking a picture of your receipt, but goes one step further where you can submit your expenses to your manager or accountant (or really whomever you'd like).

For those who need to keep track of mileage driven, this app allows you to not only manually enter your information but also has a GPS calculator which you can turn on to track your distance. You can also enter your time worked, which helps those needing to track billable hours.

The app also features more than just a place to submit your expenses, as you can keep track of business operations and even set expense policies.

On the feel good front, Expensify will also donate $2 for every $1,000 in expenses to Expensify.org. These donations are given to a broad range of campaigns to help organizations around the world.

Cost: Free up to five scans a month; Upgraded version is $4.99/month per user giving you unlimited scans and additional automatic capabilities.

Bottom Line

With many apps to keep track of your expenses, it helps to find one that fits your needs. Whether you are traveling for business or pleasure, with a group or on your own, there are many apps out there that work well depending on your needs.

We’re in the height of summer travel season, and that means you’ll likely spend more on booking hotels, airfare and other travel necessities. At the same time, more than 1 in 3 (36 percent)  people planning a summer vacation in 2024 are considering taking on debt to cover the costs , according to Bankrate’s Summer Travel Survey . Even if you’re using one of today’s best travel credit cards to offset some of the costs, it’s important to set a budget for your travel expenses.

Whether you’re traveling alone or with a group, tracking your vacation spending with one of the best travel budget apps can help you avoid overspending and even split expenses equally between your travel partners. Find out which of the top travel budget apps you should be using for your next trip.

Best travel budget apps

With so many great travel budget apps on the market, you might be wondering which one to get. It really comes down to your travel style and needs. Are you traveling solo or with a group? Do you need a simple budget tracker or do you want planning tools? There’s something out there for everyone, but here are the best options:

Work travel budget apps

Managing your expenses when you’re traveling for work can be challenging. Expensify lets you track your travel expenses easily. Instead of ransacking your luggage for that missing dinner receipt, just snap a picture of the receipt with the Smart Scan feature, and share it with your accounting team for reimbursement.

If you’re merely tracking expenses for tax purposes, Expensify offers several handy tools. The GPS calculator automatically tracks your eligible mileage for you, so you don’t have to enter it manually. This work travel budget app also lets you create expense reports by scanning receipts or entering time worked, for billing purposes.

Sign-up is super easy. All you have to do is provide your email address to set up an Expensify account. You can start using the app immediately, which is free for most users. A “Collect” account, which includes accounting and payroll tools, costs $5 per month. Meanwhile, a “Control” account costs $9 per month and allows for multiple approvers, setting expense policies and custom reporting tools.

When you sign up for Expensify, you can get a seven-day free trial of the Collect and Control memberships.

If you use Expensify regularly for work travel, look into the Expensify Card, which simplifies the process of importing business transactions. You can also import card transactions into Expensify directly.

If you’re a seasoned business traveler, you may already be familiar with the Concur suite (and in some cases, you may be required by your employer to use it). If you aren’t, get ready to meet one of the most robust, full-featured business travel solutions available today.

Within the SAP Concur suite, you’ll find separate modules for managing travel plans and submitting reimbursement requests for travel-related expenses. Concur Expense’s ExpenseIt app for travel expenses makes it easy to take pictures of your paper receipts and automatically categorize them to submit as expense reports. Meanwhile, Concur Travel lets you book your own business travel or make arrangements with your company’s preselected airline carriers , hotels, and other providers.

SAP Concur offers travel management solutions for organizations of all sizes — from small businesses to enterprise leaders. Business owners and managers can try Concur Expense and Concur Travel for free; individual users who have access to these tools through their employer can download the iOS or Google Play app to get started.

Solo travel budget apps

Pocketguard.

PocketGuard markets itself as the “#1 budgeting app for college students and overspenders,” but it’s actually a great vacation budget planner as well. That’s because the app uses the “in my pocket” feature to calculate how much disposable income you have available. You can then allocate this towards your travel budget.

All you have to do is provide your income and spending information. PocketGuard will calculate your disposable income accordingly. If you’re one of the 36 percent of summer vacationers who are willing to go into debt to travel this summer, according to Bankrate, then PocketGuard might be able to help with that too. This impromptu travel budget app will recommend a strategy for paying off debt in the most efficient way. You can use PocketGuard to set financial goals, save money and plan for future travel as a reward.

Trabee Pocket

The Trabee Pocket app provides both travel budgeting and expense tracking in a user-friendly interface. Trabee lets you set a vacation budget and then enter your expenses to track how much you’re spending in different categories. The app also provides currency conversion, so you can get an accurate sense of your spending.

At the end of your trip, you can even export your expense data to a PDF or CSV file for future budgeting and tax purposes. Overall, this is a solid vacation budget planner app if you’re looking for a free option. Trabee is available on iOS and the Google Play store.

The great thing about Tripcoin is that you can use it without an internet connection, which is especially important if you’re traveling through remote areas. The app’s Dropbox integration also makes it possible to back up your data in case you lose your phone.

Tripcoin’s user-friendly interface makes it easy to set up a trip and break down your spending each day by expense category. You can find out how much you’re spending on transportation, meals, activities and other travel expenses, making it a great way to stay accountable and on top of your budget at each destination.

Tripcoin supports over 150 currencies, converging your spending automatically based on current exchange rates. This ensures accuracy in your budget tracking and ensures you don’t have to perform this tedious task yourself.

Group travel budget apps

If you’re traveling with a group, it’s not always practical for each person to pay for their own expenses. Pulling out multiple credit cards to cover the group dinner bill is possible, but booking group tours and even airfare can be a hassle when done individually.

That’s where Splitwise comes in. The app lets users track shared expenses and the balance owed by each person. This transparency can make it much easier to determine who owes what at the end of a group trip. Frequent traveler and UX Specialist, Christian Castillo has used Splitwise across multiple group vacations to split expenses evenly with friends.

“The app makes it easy to input expenses as they occur and I’m able to send it to the group that I’m traveling with all at once,” says Castillo. “So no miscommunication has been had because with ferry rides, dinners, and excursions, we all agree to split the cost evenly.”

He touts Splitwise’s ability to load expenses as you go and even scan receipts with the paid pro version of the app. One of the biggest advantages he shares is having everything on one platform.

“Splitwise connects to your Paypal, Venmo, or bank account where you can pay back your friends quickly. It doesn’t stop you from adding a gaggle of people. Create the group, add expenses — it’s all tracked in one area. You’re also able to remove people just as easily if one of your friends decided they did not want coffee that day, but everyone else did.” — Christian Castillo Frequent traveler and UX Specialist

The one downside Castillo shares about using the Splitwise app is the limited capability of the free version,

“One downfall about Splitwise is that you do get capped on how many expenses you can input in one day unless you have the pro version.”

Even without spending $4.99 per month on the pro version, this travel budget app is still highly useful. If you’re planning a group trip and need a way to split expenses without the hassle, simply download the free app, add group members and seamlessly settle up at the end of the trip.

Check out Splitwise’s “simplify debts” feature, which balances debts across group members to minimize the total number of payments needed to settle up. It doesn’t change the amount each person owes, but it does make it easier to pay everyone back across the group.

This one is for the planners. Planning bachelor or bachelorette parties are notoriously challenging on both budget and group logistics. But the Batch app simplifies things with budgeting and planning tools designed to make a variety of parties and vacations less stressful. Users can budget, plan and book all activities for a dinner party, group trip, birthday or bachelorette party. You can even add your friends to the app to communicate and make planning decisions easier, as well as divide up expenses in the app.

While Batch is primarily marketed around bachelorette parties, you can use it to book any type of group activity in participating cities. Although you can do just about all of your trip planning through this app, this one doesn’t handle payments. It only helps track group expenses through its Ledger feature, so you can see who owes what. The Batch app is free to use, though there is a processing fee when you book events.

TravelSpend

In my own experience, one of the best travel budget apps is TravelSpend . It’s simple to use, automatically converts spending to your home currency and lets you add friends so you can track expenses together. Plus it gives you a breakdown of which categories you’re doing most of your spending in. I recently used it to track expenses on a trip to Toronto, and it helped me stay within my budget.

TravelSpend, a travel budget app

It took no time at all to enter my spending as it occurred and it was immediately deducted from my set budget for the trip so I could see how much was left to spend at a glance. It was also nice to see what categories I did most of my spending in which would come in handy for those using a rotating category credit card .

Viewing your spent amounts by categories

You can also export your spending to a csv or excel file to integrate it with your other budgeting methods. With the premium version (which costs $4.99 per month) you get added functionality such as:

  • Creating custom categories
  • Attaching GPS locations to your costs
  • Adding income
  • Creating your own exchange rate
  • Seeing and settling debts

Even without the added features of the premium version, using TravelSpend for free is powerful on its own. The primary drawback for me is that even though you can track shared expenses, there are no payment integrations within the app. So you’ll have to switch over to Venmo, Paypal or Zelle once it’s time to settle up, and then switch back to TravelSpend to mark the debts as paid.

The bottom line

With the summer travel season on the upswing, having a travel budget app is more important than ever. Sticking to a budget at home can be challenging in itself, but once you add the thrill of a vacation, budgeting can quickly snowball if you don’t have the right tools or apps to help you reign it in. By utilizing one of the best travel budget apps, you can stay on budget, cut down on unnecessary expenses and plan your travels more efficiently .

If you're in business, one of the trickiest issues can be managing your accounts effectively. However, using the power of the best expense trackers on the market can streamline how you record your income, expenditure and more.

Even with the use of accounting software , it's one thing to keep up with your billing and invoicing , but another to manage irregular expenses such as store receipts and travel tickets.

Worse still is that those small expense receipts can become easily misplaced, not least by getting mixed up with your files of normal invoices and end up in the wrong date range, or even thrown away in the trash.

Luckily, there are a number of software and apps available for managing your expenses, and we've picked the best expense tracker apps here.

Some of these are cloud-based, and allow you to use an app on your smartphone or other mobile device to  not only enter the amount but also scan the receipt to create a digital image. This makes it much easier to keep a copy and file it away in case it's needed by your accountant or even someone from your tax office, plus in just using your phone you can do this on the move.

Additionally, the ease by which document scanning can now be done by an app means that you can keep on top of deductible expenses, helping ensure you bank the profit due to you and pay less on taxes.

This becomes an essential concern the more employees a business has, as lost receipts are literally money thrown away. Software that allows businesses to keep a proper record of expenses isn't just more efficient, it's also more profitable.

So read on to see our list of the best expense tracker apps and software to help manage your expenses.

We've also highlighted the best tax software .

10 best expense tracker apps for Android

Mint best expense tracker apps for Android

Expense tracking is an important life skill. Self-employed people especially need to keep track of expenses for tax season. Even normal people can benefit from a good budget. Luckily, there’s nearly an endless number of ways to track your expenses. Your bank app can help, but there are other apps specifically for this purpose. Whether it’s keeping the IRS off your back or just trying to save up, here are the best expense tracking apps for Android to help.

The best expense tracker apps for Android

Everydollar.

  • Microsoft Excel

Money Lover

Your banking app.

Price: Free / $3.99

AndroMoney is an excellent, albeit simple expense tracker. You can keep tabs on multiple accounts, backup your stuff over the cloud, and various ways to view your spending statistics. The app keeps it simple by not having a lot of extra stuff that people generally don’t use. You input your accounts, add in your expenditures, and see what you spent money on over the course of a year.

We also like that the premium version is a single price and not a subscription, a boon to people trying to spend less money.

Price: Free / $129.99 per year

Every Dollar is another decent budgeting and expense tracker app. The app lets you create custom monthly budgets, track your expenditures, set custom reminders to pay your bills, and do various things like that. The app has a simple layout that’s mostly easy to use, at least after you get everything set up.

It leans a bit more toward budgeting rather than expenditures, but it’s certainly helpful if you’re keeping track of the books for independent contractors.

Price: Free / $5-$9 per user per month

Expensify is another excellent app for managing business expenses specifically. The app includes multiple ways to track your business spending, good basic features like receipt scanning, and other stuff like that. It was recently updated in 2021 with some fresh UI elements, although long-time users do say it’s a little more difficult to get around the app. Regardless, the app was custom-built for expense tracking.

The free version should work fine for most folks. The premium subscription is mostly for enterprise use.

Price: Free

Fuelio screenshot 2020

A lot of folks drive for work and Fuelio can help with that. It’s a gas and mileage log where you can easily input how far you drove and how much gas it cost you. It can also help you find nearby gas stations and cheaper gas. The app uses GPS to keep track of your distance traveled. It also works with bi-fuel vehicles.

You can back up your data on Dropbox or Google Drive, get reminders for things like odometer counts, and more. Drivers should definitely check this one out.

Microsoft Excel (or similar apps)

Price: Free / $6.99 per month / $69.99 per year

Microsoft Excel screenshot

Those looking for something simple can use the good old spreadsheet approach. You simply configure your spreadsheet and add all of the various items you need. I personally use a method like this for my business expenditures as a tech blogger and it works fairly well as long as you remember to keep up with it.

We linked Microsoft Excel because it’s the most recognizable one, but Google Drive’s Sheets function works just as well in most cases. You can store both in the cloud and edit them there so you never need to worry about losing your data. For the most part, both options are free.

Price: Free / $0.99

Mint screenshot 2021

Mint is one of the biggest names in expense tracking and budgeting. The app lets you track your transactions across all of your accounts, monitor your expenses, and even keep track of your investment accounts. There’s also support for cryptocurrency. It’s a decent all-in-one spot for all of those things.

The one downside is how Mint keeps changing its UI. It’s very clunky to use even after you get used to it. The pros outweigh the cons, but the continued complexity added to the app keeps it from being the slam dunk offering it once was.

Price: Free / $2.49

Monefy is another financial organizer app that works quite well. It takes a more manual approach where you add records every time you spend money. Thus, you can more easily keep track of only some types of expenses if you want to go that route.

Some other features include Google Drive and Dropbox support, multi-currency support, a decent budget tracker, and the ability to collaborate with another person. It’s simple enough to be effective, but powerful enough to be useful.

Price: Free / $34.99

Money Lover is a budgeting app with some powerful features. You can connect your various accounts to the app, connect your bills to the app, and then automate your bill paying. That makes life easier just on the face of it. Some other features include an expense tracker with a nifty pie chart, categories so you can keep track of business stuff, and a decently simple UI.

The premium version unlocks a bunch of stuff and is rather pricy, but it does got on sale fairly frequently so we’d recommend waiting for a sale.

Wallet is a good finance manager. It’s built to help people save money, manage expenses, and plan for the future. The premise of this one is to get a lot of the extras out of the way, so you can set clear goals in regard to your finances. The app connects to your bank and automatically syncs with it.

You can create budgets, view reports, check out planned payments, and share the account with other people. It can also track receipts and export to CSV, XLS, and PDF so it’s also perfectly usable, come tax time.

Chase Bank screenshot 2021

Your banking app may have the features you’re looking for depending on the bank. It obviously shows you how much money you have, your recent transactions, and you’ll need bank statements for a variety of things like car loans. Some banks include things like daily insights into your spending, budget tracking, and you can even track expenses on some apps.

Your bank probably won’t do it as well as one of the others listed, but if your needs are simple and your bank is equipped to help, it’s worth checking first to save yourself time and money.

top-travel-budget-apps- track-trip-expenses

Traveling can be wonderful only if you can enjoy every moment of your trip, starting from planning to getting home safe and sound, and not broke of course. This is why it’s really important to think about your travel budget and here it comes some travel budget apps you can use to manage your expenses and enjoy your travels.

Every travel has it’s own budgeting tips, plans and a way of spending. In order to calculate and track travel expenses, I’m suggesting those budget-tracking apps to help you plan your trip, or let’s say plan the way you’re spending your savings.

Budget travelers (frugal travelers) and backpackers don’t travel the same way as those travelers who enjoy luxury hotels and rent a Lamborghini while on a trip. But all of them need a spending plan to track every penny while on the road.

To enjoy the best of your trip, you need to know some basics about managing your spendings, get away from overspending and stop stressing over money. You can do all of this by creating a travel budget.

That’s the beauty of the listed travel budget apps below. You don’t have to make the budget manually, you’ll save time and focus on having fun.

Other features that travel budgeting apps offer is to make it easy packing, navigate your destination , and most of all help you plan your trip by booking good hotels and flights based on your budget to make the vacation stress-free.

Which Travel Budget Apps should I use?

We did check more than 50 travel managing apps before writing this article. The list above contains the best travel budget apps, based on several factors like:

  • App size : Some apps need more than 100mb storage space. This list includes only expense apps with less than 10mb size.
  • Privacy : All apps respect your privacy when connected to your bank account.
  • App score : Every app has at least 4/5 customers and user reviews.
  • Functionalities : All apps work offline, and don’t require registration or payment.
  • App Price : The best apps aren’t free. Those who provide true help to travelers can be smaller apps with limited features but still provide great results.
  • App Compatibility : Some apps don’t work on all devices. We made sure to include those working on major devices and on both iOS and Android systems.

Trabee Pocket

One of the best travel expense apps available in the market; offers great features to help you manage your overall spending habits, you can set a trip budget , share budget reports and organize your expenses by categories.

Trabee Pocket lets you see how much money you spent, and how much you still have in your pocket or bank account. You can also set a budget and make sure not to encounter any financial emergency while abroad.

This app is a true travel budget manager and tracker. It supports multiple currencies and a real-time converter to check the price in your local currency.

With the predefined categories that Trabee Pocket provides. You can make multiple budget reports like how much you spent on public transportation, food & restaurants, souvenirs, museums and much more.

The app offers a great option to export the budget reports into CSV and XML files, an easy way to share and save you reports for a better understanding of your spending habits.

A great option offered by Trabee Pocket is taking pictures , recipes photos, add notes about the spending you made, all of this to easily manage your expenses without blowing your budget.

Pictures can be for a cup of coffee and where you got it from, or even a picture of a souvenir to remind yourself how much you spent on the road.

Get Trabee Pocket on Google Play or App Store .

The app isn’t just a travel expense tracker app, it’ also a travel planning app . It includes some features that help you a lot while planning your trip , by making a saving plan or defining your travel budget before hitting the road.

Card payment will be available once you connect the app with your bank/card account. So you don’t have to add the expenses manually every time, even if the manual option is available on the app.

Also, Spendee provides a good feature to help you save money by tracking your income and managing expenses before you go on a trip. It helps a lot when planning your travels.

Another great feature is the option to add multiple users to manage expenses on one account. They call it  shared wallets , a great way to track your spending while traveling in groups or with family.

The app has its own  currency exchange system . The feature requires an internet connection and you can add expenses in multiple currencies. Suitable for those traveling to a foreign country while using a local credit card .

By using Spendee you can set an overall budget for your entire trip and stick on it, the app will send you notifications if you reach your daily budget.

Get Spendee on Google Play or App Store .

Trip Expense Manager

The app is 100% Travel related , track every penny while traveling solo or in groups. The app developer said, “I searched Google Play and didn’t find any good travel expenses app that fulfills travelers requirements”. So he/she decided to create an app that is perfect for group and solo travelers .

Some of the features making Trip Expense Manager one of the best budget apps ; are creating multiple trips and managing expenses on one account.

You can also add places and destinations (sort of a travel bucket list ) and write some descriptions or notes for a future visit.

For group travelers, it’s important to have the possibility to split the bill and calculate travel costs. With Trip Expense Manager it’s possible and you can also share the budget reports with other travel companions.

The app also provides categories, charts and a currency converter. While the multiple currencies option requires an internet connection to fully work. It can be a very helpful option when visiting multiple countries.

Get Trip Expense Manager on Google Play .

Another travel-related app is TripBudget, some of the outstanding features are the option to plan a trip based on a fixed budget . You can make trip budget plans before traveling, and track trip expenses when you start your trip.

A great option offered by TripBudget is the possibility to compare the estimated budget on the same trip by making several versions of a single trip. One of the best features I love about TripBudget while planning any trip or multiple trips at once.

After you create your trip budget (Plan Mode) you can switch directly to the Spending Mode once your trip begins. Start tracking expenses in real-time and compare with the Budget Plan you already made.

The app also provides the group travel option , share, split bills and make trip budgets for multiple travels. It can be done on the Plan Mode or while traveling via the Pending Mode by adding other travelers to the group.

TripBudget automatically (requires internet connection) converts expenses into/from your local currency. But a good feature with this app is the possibility to fix currency rates for every trip budget.

Another good feature is that you can add Discounts and Taxes. Those are usually hidden expenses that can ruin your trip budget.

The best features that TripBudget provides is the GPS localization , used to track expenses from specific locations and destinations. A great feature for travel foodies and those travelers who enjoy exploring new places.

The TripBudget is totally Free , doesn’t contain ads , and no in-app purchase is required. Even if it’s a Beta version but the functionalities are above expectations and really a must-have app on any traveler’s phone.

Get TripBudget on Google Play .

Toshl Finance

The app isn’t just a Travel budget app, Toshl Finance is a complete Financial app with a lot of features. Some of them are travel-related and those are the options I’m going to cover regarding this app.

A great option in Toshl Finance is the possibility to import past transactions , from different financial services (Banks, Cards, Digital Currency). A good feature to check your past trip’s expenses and make sure to prepare an even better budget plan for the next trip.

With Toshl Finance you’ll be able to access your expenses reports from various platforms using the Toshl web app . As I already said, it’s a complete financial app with various options to choose from.

The option to connect multiple bank accounts, credit cards, and other financial services is a good feature too. But the best thing is the possibility to connect PayPal and Crypto-Currencies as well.

The Toshl Finance app is free , but not totally , you’ll get only 2 financial accounts and 2 budgets with the free version, also no photos if you’re not paying for a subscription.

The app offers two subscriptions to get unlimited budgets and accounts, also to take pictures (receipts, locations…) and to import transactions from your banking accounts. (Check if your country is supported before downloading the app)

What makes Toshl Finance the last app on my list, it requires an internet connection for every task, some of the features doesn’t load at all if you’re working offline, not the best feature for travelers.

Get Toshl Finance on Google Play or App Store .

Other Travel Expense Apps you may consider:

I already picked the best travel expense apps I feel more comfortable with, I do travel in Europe and Asia mostly, so for those traveling in the USA and other destinations you can check the above list.

Those apps aren’t free , contains ads and some of them get very bad reviews when it comes to Privacy Policy (especially when connecting bank accounts) so be careful before using or purchasing any of those travel-related apps:

In order to manage funds, the Goodbudget app is using the envelopes’ concept . First, you’ll have to create a category (envelope) and assign a budget, the category can be for flight tickets, hotel booking or even a package.

The app is free and gives only 20 envelopes without the subscription, for more, you’ll need to pay for it.

Goodbudget is available for iOS and Android .

The best thing about Travel Budget Tracker is the option to work offline in all conditions, very useful for those travelers willing to enjoy a trip without the internet ; and only looking to spend their savings without blowing the budget in one day.

With Travel Budget Tracker you can also create categories, assign a budget and export budgeting reports.

Travel Budget Tracker is available for iOS and Android .

Spent is an ordinary expense-tracking and budgeting tool . It comes with many features like receipts’ scanning , multiple categories, banking features, and the best feature is the easy interface.

Another great feature is the cashback program when you make purchases. Still, this option is limited to some countries and a small list of companies to use with.

Spent is available for iOS and Android .

This app works as a money management tool, can be sync with your bank account to track your income and expenses as well. The manual option is also available in the Mint app.

Mint app is free , but you’ll have to watch ads , a lot of ads. Also, keep in mind that Mint App works only in the US and Canada .

Mint is available for iOS and Android .

The Wally app doesn’t have the option to connect to your bank account, so you’ll have to perform all actions manually and enter every single transaction.

Other good features that come with Wally are location tracking , taking pictures , and of course the currency exchange .

Wally is available on iOS and Android .

What’s the best travel app for Business Travelers?

If you’re traveling for business and you need to justify the business expenses I’d recommend using  Toshl Finance , but better using the paid subscription and connecting your bank accounts with the app to get the best of it.

By using Toshl Finance you’ll be able to take receipts’ pictures, extracting financial data from the bank into the app, and also making spending reports for your business trip .

Travel budget apps for Group Travel

When traveling in groups, it’s mandatory to check your budget and the group’s budget, split bills and make sure every member of the team is paying. For this kind of trip, I’d recommend either TripBudget or  Trip Expense Manager .

The first one is more suitable when traveling in groups and planning the trip ahead , the second app will be more helpful if you’re making a one-time group journey between friends or family.

The most reliable travel app for Currency Exchange

Any travel budget apps list can’t be complete without talking about the most used and reliable app for currency exchange , I’ll have to add XE to the list because it’s a focused app that gives exact exchange rates in real-time .

The XE Currency Converter & Exchange Rate Calculator is a free and very trusted app, it provides accurate foreign exchange rates (requires internet connection) in charts and graphs, with options to monitor currencies and get rate alerts.

XE Currency apps are available on iOS devices, iPad,  Android , and even on BlackBerry .

When using XE it’s better to create an account (Free or Paid) to monitor currencies and get the best mid-market rate when planning your budget trip, you can also use the app offline (saves the last exchange rate) or create a widget on your phone for fast access and live view .

Bonus : XE provides a Travel App called XE Travel  it works like other travel budget apps, but some of the features are missing, I didn’t try it myself on any of my trips.

What is your favorite travel budget app?

Travel is about freedom, but it can’t be if you’re spending too much on things that don’t bring so much fun to the trip.

Also, you don’t have to sacrifice freedom and fun by avoiding things and activities that you’ll enjoy, use one of those apps as expenses tracker to stay on track and make sure every activity has a priority.

We’d like to know which expenses tracker you like, head over to the comment and share your experience or ask questions and will try our best to help you.

The best travel apps for Android

Save yourself time, headaches, and even money with these standout android apps for business travel..

city skyline wraps around the globe

For all the ways travel is different these days, one thing hasn’t changed: Moving from one place to another can be a massive hassle. There’s plenty of room for inconvenience and error, and a journey rarely goes according to plan.

But while there’s not much you can do about the late departures, the surly gate attendants, or the smelly fella somehow always seated right next to you (a factor where your mask may come in extra handy, incidentally), there are some tech-centric steps you can take to make your next business trip a little less unpleasant.

Android’s travel app selection has really taken off over the past few years, and the Google Play Store now boasts an impressive array of genuinely useful titles for the traveling professional. After putting numerous standout candidates to the test, these are the apps I’d recommend stowing on your smartphone and keeping at arm’s reach whenever your work next has you hitting the road or flying the (allegedly) friendly skies.

(All apps are free unless otherwise specified.)

Planning and preparing

Organize your packing process.

PackPoint is a travel organization genie. You simply tell it where you’re going, when, and what you’ll be doing — and the app generates a detailed checklist of suggested items for your suitcase.

You can add your own items to the list, as needed, and then use it as a guide to make sure you remember everything, every time.

android travel apps packpoint 2021

PackPoint takes some of the pain out of packing for a trip.

PackPoint is free, with an optional one-time $3 upgrade that removes ads and gives you the ability to create your own custom packing templates. The paid version of the app also integrates with TripIt (more on that in a moment), which means it can import your travel plans automatically and create packing lists before you even ask.

Prepare for local navigation

Yeah, yeah, I know: You’re well aware of Google Maps . But what you might not realize — or maybe have just forgotten — is that with a teensy bit of planning, you can download all the data you need for a trip directly into Maps in advance. That way, you can navigate to your heart’s content, even in areas without strong mobile data signals, and you can avoid burning through mobile data unnecessarily on the road.

Here’s the trick: While you’re still in the comfort of your home or office, open up Maps on your phone and search for the city you’ll be visiting. Tap the city’s name within the search interface, then tap its name a second time when it appears in a box at the bottom of the screen.

At that point, you should be taken to a full-screen info page about the city — and within a row of circular icons, you should see one icon with a downward-facing arrow and the word “Download” beneath it. Tap that, then tap “Download” on the confirmation screen that appears. Once the download finishes, you’ll be able to access maps and directions within your destination without the need for an active connection.

Repeat as needed for any additional places on your agenda, then rest easy knowing your navigational guide will be there and waiting — no matter what sort of conditions you encounter.

Manage your air travel

TripIt is an all-around air travel management companion, and it’ll make your life easier in some meaningful ways — especially if you do a fair amount of flying.

At its core, TripIt allows you to forward flight itineraries and other travel-related emails to a special address — or, if you want, to grant it direct access to your inbox so it can find and process such emails on its own — and it then extracts all the relevant details and organizes them into clean and easy-to-follow master itineraries.

Where TripIt really shines, though, is with its optional $49-a-year TripIt Pro service (which you can try out via a free 30-day trial). That service gives you real-time flight updates all throughout your trip — often beating notifications by airlines’ own apps, in my experience, as well as updates to the monitors in the terminal.

android travel apps tripit

Once you travel with TripIt — and specifically its TripIt Pro service — you won’t want to fly without it.

Beyond that, TripIt Pro makes it dead simple to find alternate flights at any point in your adventure. If a connection is canceled or delayed, all it takes is a couple of taps to see what other flights are available — even down to the specific open seats — on your current airline or on another. That’s helped me stay a step ahead of the gate agent on multiple occasions when late departures have put connecting flights in jeopardy.

TripIt Pro comes with a few other perks, too, such as a four-month free trial of the CLEAR expedited airport access program and then a $30 discount on that service’s ongoing annual fee. But the notifications and alternate flight finder are what really make the app invaluable. And while services like App in the Air offer similar sorts of features, no other app has been as consistently helpful, reliable, and easy to use as TripIt in my real-world travel testing. It’s the gold standard of travel organization and a must-have for any frequent flier or business traveler.

Find the best flights

Forget all the clunky, upsell-infested flight-finding services and instead, open up your Chrome Android browser and navigate to Google Flights . All right — so technically, it isn’t an Android app , but Google’s flight-searching system makes it super-easy to find and book flights across all airlines. You can save or share potential itineraries, monitor flights and get notified by email as soon as a specific fare goes up or down, and then buy your tickets directly with whatever airline (or airlines) you choose.

Pro tip: If you want to make the app easier to access, tap Chrome’s three-dot menu icon while viewing the website and select “Add to home screen.” That’ll give you a more traditional mobile-app-like icon that can then pull up the tool with a single tap.

One other utility that might be worth keeping handy is Hopper — but there’s a very specific purpose and also an important asterisk involved. Hopper watches flight prices over long periods of time in order to track trends and show you how fares are likely to fluctuate based on when you fly and when you make your purchase. If you’re booking your own travel and either footing the bill yourself or trying to stay within a limited company budget, that knowledge can be incredibly helpful to have.

android travel apps hopper

Hopper’s airfare-tracking system can give you valuable flight price knowledge.

But Hopper’s ultimate goal is to get you to book your tickets through its service, and that doesn’t necessarily seem like the most advisable thing to do. User reviews on the Play Store mention difficulty changing itineraries once they’re booked with Hopper and challenges getting through to the company’s customer service.

So what I’d suggest is treating Hopper as a resource and not a ticket-purchasing portal: Use it to research optimal travel dates and purchasing windows, if you need to, and then take the info it gives you and plug it directly into either Google Flights or the appropriate airline’s website to buy the tickets directly from the source — and without the potentially problematic middleman.

Speed up your border entry

If you’re traveling internationally — and have a valid passport from the U.S. or Canada — the Mobile Passport app can save you precious time when you enter the U.S. by allowing you to submit your passport info and customs declaration form through the app upon landing and then skip the regular line on your way through border patrol.

Despite its name, the app does not replace your passport; you still need to carry that with you. And not to worry: It’s authorized by the U.S. Customs and Border Protections agency and totally legit .

Track your mileage

If you drive your own car for business, Microsoft’s MileIQ makes it easy as can be to keep track of all your mileage for later reimbursement. Once you set up the app on your phone and activate its “Drive Detection” feature, you don’t have to do a thing: It’ll automatically detect when you’re driving and then log all your miles in the background. It even uses current IRS-mandated reimbursement rates to calculate what you’re owed.

The app has some interesting advanced options, too, such as the ability to set specific work hours and then ignore any drives that occur outside of those times.

MileIQ is free to use for up to 40 drives per month. For unlimited access, you’ll have to pony up $6 a month or $60 for a full year of service.

Pay less for gas

Why pay top dollar for top-offs when you can drive an extra minute from the highway and save yourself (or your company) some money? GasBuddy gives you the insight you need to find fuel that won’t break the bank: You just open up the app, tap the option to find gas near you, and then either look through a list of nearby gas stations and how much they’re currently charging or switch to a map view to see prices plotted out around your present location.

android travel apps gasbuddy 2021

GasBuddy relies on user reports to provide up-to-date info on gas prices in your area.

GasBuddy has a bunch of other features you probably won’t want to mess with, but the app’s price searching ability is worth every penny (particularly since the app is free and thus costs you precisely zero pennies to use).

At your destination

Track your travel expenses.

When it comes to more general expense-tracking, Expensify is the app to have in your arsenal. Expensify lets you simply take photos of receipts with your phone — or forward invoices and receipts via email — and it then extracts the relevant details and organizes them into reports. The app is available on the web as well, and it offers direct-export integrations with QuickBooks, Xero, and other accounting services.

android travel apps expensify 2021

Snap a photo of a receipt — or forward it in via email — and then forget about it with Expensify.

Expensify costs either $5 or $9 per person per month for businesses, depending on your needs. You can try the app out with a free individual plan, too, though that limits you to just 25 imports per month and lacks many of the service’s advanced expense reporting and integration options.

Find a place to stay on short notice

The next time you find yourself unexpectedly stuck somewhere — be it due to a cancelled flight or a road trip gone awry — don’t panic. Instead, snag the free and easy to use HotelTonight app. HotelTonight searches around your current location to find hotels with open and available rooms, but that’s not all: It also scores you legitimate savings on the rates, by way of an apparent deal wherein hotels let the service sell rooms at a discount in order to fill last-minute vacancies. I spot-checked a handful of the app’s recommendations, and the savings were absolutely real.

android travel apps hoteltonight

HotelTonight provides an easy way to find last-minute rooms at discounted rates.

HotelTonight has handy details and ratings for all the hotels it recommends. And once you find something suitable, all it takes is a few taps within the app to book your room and be ready to roll.

Find Wi-Fi anywhere

Why waste money on mobile data when Wi-Fi is all around you and waiting for the taking? Just open WiFi Map to see an interactive map showing available Wi-Fi networks in your area (or any other area you want to search). The app lists out speed information and even provides user-submitted passwords to secured public networks in some instances.

Just note: When you first open WiFi Map, you’ll be pressed to upgrade to a $40-a-year premium subscription. That allows you to eliminate some rather aggressive ads within the app and also gives you the ability to download information in advance for offline viewing. You don’t have to make the upgrade, though (and arguably shouldn’t bother); if you want to use the app for free, just tap the “Continue without subscription” text when the upgrade prompt appears.

Also, when searching for available networks, be sure to tap the three-line menu icon at the top of the results list and change the setting from “Show All” to “Recently Connected.” That’ll weed out old (and thus likely to be inaccurate) info from the list and show you only networks that have been confirmed to work by other users within the last 90 days.

Convert and translate anything

For your next border-crossing journey, let XE Currency Converter convert currency for you without the usual headache. Once you tell the app your home country’s currency and select which foreign currencies you want to convert into, all you have to do is type in a dollar amount to get an instant glimpse at the exact equivalent based on up-to-the-minute conversion rates.

And when language translation is what you require, the aptly named Google Translate app is the tool you want. It’s jam-packed with practical features, such as the ability to translate text instantly from an image you capture with your camera and a “conversation mode” that lets you have a (somewhat awkward) back-and-forth dialog, in real time, with someone speaking a different tongue.

Stay fit wherever you go

Who says you have to stay sedentary just because you’re traveling? Skip the underwhelming hotel “exercise facility” and turn to RunGo to find and navigate popular running trails wherever you are. It’s free to use, with an optional $2-a-month or $15-a-year premium upgrade that gives you a variety of extra features you probably won’t need (unless you really want to sync the app with a Strava activity tracker).

If you’d rather get your heart pumping from the privacy of your own room, snag the Nike Training Club app. It’s filled with easy-to-follow workouts, ranging from the intense and Crossfit-reminiscent “Bodyweight Only Benchmark” to the simple and stretch-oriented “Run Ready Yoga.”

android travel apps nike training club 2021

The Nike Training Club app has tons of workouts you can do almost anywhere.

You can find workouts for practically any amount of time you want — as little as five minutes, even! — and you can browse specifically through “no-equipment workouts,” assuming you don’t carry your entire collection of kettlebells with you every time you travel. And best of all? The app is completely free to use.

The only thing you’ll be missing is an excuse.

Top Budgeting App Reviews

Budgeting looks different for everyone, so we selected four picks for budgeting apps. We selected a well-rounded budgeting app, one designed for couples, another that's appealing for setting goals, and lastly one with more detailed budgeting features.

We have a mix of free budgeting apps and ones that have premium plans with subscription fees, so you can choose an option based on your financial needs and priorities.

Best Overall: Rocket Money

Rocket Money (previously known as TrueBill) is our best budgeting app overall because it has a variety of tools to help you save and limit spending.

Rocket Money has both a free plan and a premium plan. With the free plan, you'll be able to link bank accounts, credit cards, and investment accounts to track spending and you'll also be able to create a budget .

The premium plan includes concierge services, which review your bills and subscriptions to help you cancel or get refunds for these services on your behalf. It also includes premium customer chat, unlimited budgets, customizable budget categories, a savings account, real-time updated syncing, and a credit score report.

The app's standout feature is Bill Negotiation. You'll upload a copy of your bill, and Rocket Money will determine whether you can get the same service with the company for a lower price. Rocket Money may also help you get refunds if you're charged bank overdraft fees or late fees.

When Rocket Money negotiates a bill, you'll have to pay a percentage (you may choose any amount from 30% to 60%) of whatever it will save you for the year. If you plan to change your internet, cable, phone, or wireless provider in the next year, you could end up losing money, though.

Pricing: You may choose how much to pay each month through a sliding scale. Rocket Money has a free plan that's $0. The Premium plan has a 7-day free trial; after the free trial, you'll have to pay around $6 to $12 per month (the lower-price plans are billed annually instead of monthly).

If you would like an additional place to store money for a common goal, like a holiday budget or a couple's vacation.

You won't be able to access Honeydue through your computer; it's only available through a mobile app. Some of our other top picks have both online and mobile platforms for more convenience.

Regular Pricing: Free

Best for Saving for Financial Goals: Monarch Money

Monarch Money may be worthwhile if you are looking for a budgeting app that helps you save for financial goals and create a budget. It's also become one of the most hyped-up Mint alternatives among Redditor users since Mint shut down.

Through Monarch Money, you'll be able to make unlimited personalized savings goals . You can customize goals, organize them by order of importance, and link them to bank accounts. The app also helps you create a zero-based budget, track your net worth, and analyze your cash flow.

Monarch Money doesn't have a free plan. You can try out a 7-day free trial. However, after that, you'll need to pay a subscription fee. If you do not want to pay a subscription fee for a budgeting app, you'll want to consider one of our other picks.

Rocket Money has a B rating due to a high volume of customer complaints.

Honeydue has an F rating because it hasn't responded to three customer complaints and it hasn't been in operation for a long time.

Intuit does have some public issues surrounding its tax-filing software, TurboTax.

Introduction to Budgeting Apps

Why use a budgeting app.

A budgeting app can help you understand where you spend your money. It's also useful for building and maintaining an effective budget.

The top budgeting apps let you create a monthly budget using customizable categories.

Many also help you save money effectively . For example, budgeting apps use your transaction history to make charts and graphs. You can use this information to analyze your spending patterns and figure out where to make adjustments in your budget.

Key Benefits of Budgeting Apps

The primary benefit of using a budgeting app is that it gives you a big-picture view of your financial situation.

Many budgeting apps let you link different types of bank accounts, investment accounts, credit cards , and loans. You'll be able to see all your accounts in one place and see how you're spending versus saving.

Budgeting apps also help you build better money habits. If you've struggled to maintain a budget in the past, it might be easier to track your spending on an app than completely on your own. Budgeting apps do the work for you by syncing all your accounts — you just need to make sure everything is synced correctly and make small adjustments when they aren't.

Features to Look for in a Budgeting App

User-friendly interface.

A good budgeting app has a design format that's easy to use. The app should load quickly and make it easy to get started. You should be able to create a budget on your own without much help. If you encounter technical difficulties, you should also easily be able to contact a customer representative through the app.

Syncing with Bank Account

Many easy-to-use budgeting apps for beginners allow you to sync savings accounts, checking accounts , investment accounts, or credit cards.

Apps often use Plaid to link bank accounts. Plaid can connect more than 11,000 U.S. banks and credit unions, including the best banks .

Expense Tracking

Once bank accounts are linked, your spending will be updated on the app so you have up-to-date information. A strong budgeting app will provide updates frequently, and during the same day so you can stay on top of your budget.

Customizable Budgeting Categories

Many budgeting apps allow you to create a zero-balance budget. With a zero-balance budget, you're figuring out where every dollar of your income is going. You can create budget categories for every expense. You can also create savings goals if you're setting aside money for a specific purpose, like a down payment on a home or a future vacation.

A good budgeting app allows you to make customizable budgeting categories rather than pre-set categories. That way, you can make a budget that's tailored to your life and make categories as broad or specific as you want.

Charts and Visual Analysis Features

A top budgeting app analyzes your habits so you can see how you manage your money over time. Some apps provide charts of your monthly budget so you can see how your categories compare to one another. Others might have visuals to indicate how much money you have left to spend in a certain category for that month.

Several budgeting apps also provide reports for broader areas of your finances. For example, you might be able to view your cash flow balance over several months or how your money in your retirement plans has grown over time.

How to Choose the Best Budgeting App for You

To find the right budgeting app, you need to know what features you're looking for. Are you looking for ways to cut back on spending? Do you want a free plan or a subscription plan for your budgeting app? Do you want a detailed breakdown of your finances or more of a general overview? Knowing the answers to these questions can help narrow down your options.

If you have your eye on a few budgeting apps, you can try out the free trials or free versions of each before settling on the right one. That way, you can see if the interface is also user-friendly and manageable for the long-term.

Setting Up and Using a Budgeting App

Step-by-step guide to setting up your budgeting app.

To use a budgeting app, you'll have to download it through the Android or Apple store. To set up most budgeting apps, you'll enter your name and email address. If the app charges a subscription fee, it will prompt you to sign up for a plan or free trial.

The best budgeting apps will walk you through the app's different features and help you get started. You'll typically be prompted to link accounts. Then, you can create a budget or set savings goals.

Tips for Effective Budgeting with the Apps

If you're new to budgeting apps, it may be helpful to start off with some structure.

For example, you could use a popular savings method like the 50/30/20 rule or pay-yourself-first strategy.

The 50/30/20 rule breaks down your budgeting, so 50% goes to needs, 30% goes to wants, and 20% goes to debt or savings. The pay-yourself-first strategy focuses on savings — you'll automatically transfer money from your paycheck to some of your savings and then distribute what's left over to your expenses.

Another tip for effective budgeting is to look at your expenses to see if they reflect your financial goals and values. If you have certain goals that are of higher priority than others, find ways to reduce spending in categories that aren't a priority for you. That might mean waiting before making a purchase, creating a meal plan or grocery list to limit spending on food, or auditing your subscriptions to see if there are any you can cancel.

Common Mistakes to Avoid on Budgeting Apps

Experts recommend trying out a budgeting app's free plan or free trial before committing to an annual plan.

There are many budgeting apps out there, so you want to try to find the one that best aligns with your financial needs. Testing a few apps can help you decide the best one, and it also keeps you from paying too much for a budgeting app that you won't end up using.

Pros and Cons of Budgeting Apps

Alternatives to budgeting apps, budgeting apps vs. spreadsheet or diy budgeting methods.

You may prefer building a spreadsheet budget if you don't want to link all of your bank accounts or credit cards in a mobile app. However, setting up and maintaining your budget will primarily hinge on how much work you're willing to put into it.

A budgeting app does the tracking for you. With a spreadsheet, you'll have to either start from scratch or use a template. Either way, a budgeting app still offers more comprehensive features.

Budgeting Apps vs. Personal Finance Software

Budgeting apps and personal finance software share the same features. The best option for you will depend on whether you have preferences on the tool's accessibility.

A budgeting app is primarily designed for mobile experiences. Some apps also have an online dashboard which you can access through your computer, but it is always something that's offered.

Meanwhile, personal finance software is designed for computer access. You'll either download the software to a desktop or use an online platform. Some will also have apps, but some features might not be available.

Budgeting Apps vs. Savings Accounts with Goals Features

Some of the best online banks have added unique features to their savings accounts to help customers with goal-setting.

If you're specifically looking for a way to save for goals, it may benefit you to get a savings account with buckets . Buckets are customizable tools that separate your savings so you can save for specific goals. Since they are an integrated bank account feature, they also might be easier to manage than a budgeting app.

If you would rather have more robust budgeting tools, a budgeting app will likely still stand out to you. Budgeting apps also connect investment accounts, credit cards, and loans, so you'll be able to see everything in one place.

Budgeting App FAQs

A budgeting app is beneficial for tracking expenses and sticking to a budget. It can also help you save for financial goals and prevent lifestyle creep .

To choose the best budgeting app for your needs, consider what your financial goals are and how a budgeting app can best help you achieve them. If you need help cutting back on expenses, you might consider a budgeting app with bill negotiation features. If you need help with savings, you might prioritize an app that helps with goal-setting features.

Most budgeting apps have encryption to store data, making them secure to use if you're linking your accounts. To keep your username and password safe, budgeting apps might also have multi-factor authentication so they can verify your identity when you're logging in.

A budgeting app can help you understand your financial situation so you can create a budget that saves you money over time. These apps can help you find areas where you can reduce your spending. Some also offer a bill negotiation feature so you can see if you can save money on subscriptions.

Yes, there are free budgeting apps available in the Apple and Android stores, though they typically have more limited features than apps with paid subscriptions. The best free budgeting app is Honeydue, which is specifically for couples.

Mint shut down in March 2024. You'll have to switch to Credit Karma if you want to continue using an Intuit personal finance platform, or you can switch to an alternative budgeting app.

In most cases, the best budgeting app for beginners will be one that makes budgeting easy — this means it has an easy-to-use interface and links to your accounts, so you don't have to enter every transaction manually. It can also be good to have an app that teaches you about money.

Rocket Money is our best budgeting app overall, and it has a free plan. If you're in a couple, our top pick is Honeydue which is also free to download.

Why You Should Trust Us: Experts' Advice on the Best Budgeting Apps

We consulted banking and financial planning experts to inform these picks and provide their advice on finding the budgeting app for your needs.

  • Sophia Acevedo, banking editor, Business Insider
  • Mykail James, MBA, certified financial education instructor, BoujieBudgets.com

Here's what they had to say about budgeting apps. (Some text may be lightly edited for clarity.)

What should I look for in a budgeting app?

Mykail James, MBA, certified financial education instructor, BoujieBudgets.com :

"My best tip for people who are looking to start using a budgeting app is to figure out what you're missing in your financial system. For example, if you are a person who knows that you want to stick to a zero-based budget, and you've been doing that manually, but you need maybe a little bit more help with the organization, then you can center your focus on searching for apps specifically solve your problem."

Sophia Acevedo, banking editor, Business Insider :

"I would look for features that would help me with my goals. Like if I'm trying to curb spending, I would look for a budgeting app that helps me minimize payments in certain spending areas."

How do I know if a budgeting app is right for me?

Mykail James, MBA, CFEI:

"Give it time. Every budgeting app is going to feel uncomfortable during the first month. Give it at least three months before deciding if it's not something for you. Actively try and use it before considering a switch."

Sophia Acevedo, CEPF:

"I would first try out the free version and see how it works. Some budgeting apps are entirely free, while others have different plans or trials at a variety of price points."

Methodology: How Did We Choose the Best Budgeting Apps?

At Business Insider, we aim to help smart people make the best decisions with their money. We understand that "best" is often subjective, so in addition to highlighting the clear benefits of a financial product, we outline the limitations, too.

First, we compiled a list of 18 popular budgeting apps available in both the Google Play Store and Apple Store.

Then, we reviewed each budgeting app for a week. To determine our top picks, we reviewed the initial sign-up process, pricing, budgeting tools, and user experience. We also considered whether each app accomplished everything it advertised, and how regular users reviewed the product on the Apple and Google Play store.

5 Android Apps You Need To Have Installed If You Like To Travel

I n this day and age, a smartphone is practically a must-bring on trips. After all, how else can you effortlessly and conveniently take photos and videos of your favorite moments? However, there's actually more to your mobile device than simply capturing pictures and recording videos — you can use it to plan and enhance every aspect of your trip, too. That's thanks to the myriad of travel apps available in the market today, transforming your phone into a powerful virtual travel companion that fits in your pocket.

These travel apps come in all sorts of forms. There are some for creating a comprehensive travel plan, while a few help you book transportation and accommodation. If you're an avid traveler in search of the perfect apps to use for your next getaway, you've come to the right place. We've compiled five of the essential Android apps that provide functionalities ranging from itinerary building to language translation.

For Organizing Your Trip: Travel Life

There are two types of travelers in this world. One just wings it, and the other plans even the most minor details. If you're the second type, you'll want to have a trip planner app like Travel Life installed on your phone. Travel Life serves as the centralized location for all your travel essentials and information. You can build your itinerary here, with each entry complete with the location name, description of what you'll do or see, exact address of the location, and start and end times you'll be. If you don't have any specific attractions or landmarks in mind, Travel Life's itinerary builder can suggest popular places and experiences for you to try out.

Another handy feature you can find in the app is the expense tracker, where you can keep an eye on both your personal expenses and those of your group. It can even conveniently display how much you owe a person or how much someone else owes you. Additionally, the app includes sections for your accommodation and transportation bookings, packing list, things to do before the trip, and loose notes you'd like to be mindful of.

In addition, you can manage your documents within Travel Life. Just upload a file or take a photo of your travel document, whether that's your passport, flight itinerary, or ID. All personal documents imported into the app won't be saved to the cloud nor shared with the public, ensuring your data is safe.

For Navigation: Maps.me

The last thing you'd want to do on your trip is to get lost. Yes, it's true that being lost in a new city may be an adventure in itself, as you could stumble upon excellent restaurants and shops that you otherwise would have missed. Still, getting lost is the worst possible thing if you're in a rush to make it to a dinner reservation or a booked yacht cruise. To prevent such incidents on your next trip, it's a good idea to have Maps.me  on your phone. Maps.me is an offline navigation app , so you can rely on it when you're somewhere without Wi-Fi or cell coverage. You just need to download the map of the area you'll be visiting in advance, and you're good to go.

Just like any other navigation app, Maps.me allows you to search for whatever location you want to go to. You can type the location name in the search bar or tap on one of the pre-made categories (e.g., where to eat, hotel, groceries, sights, gas) to automatically look up those establishments in your area. The app will then tell you how far the location is and how long it will take for you to reach it. You can also add as many stops to your route as you want for easier navigation. All of your favorite locations can be bookmarked for later use (which will also show on your map), eliminating the need to search for them again.

For Translation: Microsoft Translator

Unless you're a superhuman who speaks all 7,000+ languages across the world or you exclusively visit cities speaking the same language as you, you'll always need a tool to help you communicate with the locals. One of the leading translator apps in the market to consider is Microsoft Translator . It supports at least 100 languages, from mainstream ones like Spanish, French, and German to less spoken ones, such as Inuinnaqtun, Upper Sorbian, and Yucatec Maya.

To translate from one language to the next, you can use one of the three accepted input options: text, photo, and voice. For the text input, simply choose the language pair and type the phrase or sentence you wish to translate. In the case of the photo input, you'll be prompted to either take a picture using the in-app camera or upload one from your gallery. Finally, you have the voice input. Start by picking your original language and the language you want to translate to. Then, tap on the mic icon, start speaking, and listen to the translated phrase or sentence.

If you're talking to someone and want to have a more seamless conversation, you can switch the voice input to "split" mode. This displays two microphones at the same time and eliminates the need to switch the original language every time one of you talks. Microsoft Translator also includes a phrasebook featuring everyday phrases and sentences typically used when traveling. It's categorized into sections like Dining, Lodging, and Travel and Directions, so you can find what you need right away.

For Booking Accommodations And Things To Do: Airbnb

While staying in fancy hotels with breakfast buffets and Olympic-sized pools is a dream, there are always those travels where you're on a budget or you simply prefer to stay in cozy, home-like places. On such occasions, Airbnb is your best friend.

Airbnb is one of the most popular accommodation booking apps out there, and for good reason. You can find a variety of listings here that can be filtered into categories like beachfront, tiny homes, tropical, and amazing views. The listings are complete with all the details you'd need to know about the guesthouses, from the in-room amenities to the house rules. If you'd like to know something that's not mentioned in the listing, you can use the app to message the host directly.

Airbnb is also great for researching potential lodging well in advance of your trip. Say you're traveling to Bali in 18 months. It's too soon to reserve your accommodation, but you can still get a feel of the rooms available. Just browse through the Airbnb listings and tap on the heart icon to save those places in your account. That way, you can start limiting your options and spare yourself from the hassle of picking out one of the thousands of rooms weeks before your trip. You can simply go to your curated favorites and choose from there. Beyond accommodation options, Airbnb lets you book experiences, too. This can range from city walking tours to art workshops.

For Journaling Your Adventures: Travel Diaries

Traveling is one of the best ways to make unforgettable memories, but you shouldn't let your photos just sit in your gallery and gather digital dust. Instead, keep them in a stylish travel journal app such as Travel Diaries . True to its name, Travel Diaries works just like your typical digital diary, but it's specifically designed for journaling your travels.

Each of your trips serves as an individual diary, and within one diary, you can create multiple entries (referred to as chapters) where you can write about your experiences. If your trip spans multiple days, each day can have its own chapter. For a more detailed approach, you can add separate chapters for each location or city you visit instead. Aside from documenting your thoughts and experiences in words, Travel Diaries lets you upload photos of your key moments to each chapter too. Just change the layout of the chapter into one of the many options available, and you'll be able to add up to four images to each chapter.

After finishing the diary, you can then convert it to a physical copy for you to enjoy. Travel Diaries offers two ways to do so. You can go the DIY route and download your diary as a PDF that you can print out yourself. However, this feature is only available to premium users. Alternatively, you can opt to order a physical copy directly from the app. This allows you to choose the format, whether it's a hardcover book, a softcover edition, or in the style of a magazine.
