Highway Weather was born of necessity.

It began in late 2012 with a simple problem: The app founder, Devan Stormont, was trying to visit family for the winter holidays. The drive was about 7 hours through "middle-of-nowhere" rural country with limited road and cell services. A series of rolling snowstorms were moving in a way that it wasn't clear whether the trip could be made without getting trapped in a storm. Existing apps and websites were not helpful in resolving the problem.

For the sake of safety, the trip was cancelled. Out of frustration, the first version of Highway Weather was created over the following weeks (and originally called Weather Route ).

At first, it was a hobby/personal app used to solve a personal problem and updates were made to fix personal annoyances. Over time, it became popularly adopted by many travelers and commercial users.

Since 2013, it's been our mission to ensure everyone can arrive at their destination safely.

Where is the data from?

The weather data is collected from stations across the world by NOAA (the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration). Our data genius grabbed the last few decades of weather data and combined them to show averages. Remember that the map is not a forecast, but it is a very accurate representation of average weather. If you’re planning several months in advance, this tool is for you. If you’re planning to travel next week consider using a standard weather forecast instead.

Why did you put it together?

We love to travel across the world, but cold weather isn’t our thing. We wanted to not only put a resource together that would show us where to travel at any given time . If you already know where you want to go we’ve also put a lot of work into making pages that will tell you when to travel there . See, for example, this page on Ireland . Use the search box above if you already know where you want to take a trip.

How is rain -1?

-1 is the value we use when areas don’t report on rain. This helps differentiate places with no rain reported (ever) from places where there was actually no rain for the week you select.

Can I use this on my site?

You may use images of the map above or the embedded map as long as you add an attribution link back to this site. Get the embed code by clicking the “share” button above.

What if I want more detailed stats on a place?

We strongly recommend looking up our “best time to visit” pages for each tourist destination. Use the search box above. You can also try to find it on the map above and click the button, but you will have to find a week that matches the filters on the right. These pages include more data on things like snow, wind, rain, temperature, and humidity.

BEST MULTI-STATE TRAVEL APP EVER!!!

DriveWeather is a game changer for planning road trips! For 30+ years I spent hours checking multiple sources when planning a interstate trip, and using the DriveWeather app in less than FIVE MINUTES I have all that information (and more)!! If you travel by RV or car (or you’re a truck driver), DriveWeather really will be your new favorite app. If you are planning travel through multiple states, this app is exceptional and the user support is exceptional too. Using DriveWeather I can easily see weather, wind speed, temperatures and precipitation for the entire trip. I can adjust the start day or time and see what the weather forecast will be for the entire trip at the time I’ll be in a specific location!! (I upgraded to the paid version on my first trip for $10/year, and received more than $10 in value the first time I used DriveWeather). *I sent the developer a question, and in less than 30 minutes I received a very polite detailed personal response* I have never had a developer respond to a question, and if I had downloaded the latest update to the app I wouldn’t have needed to ask the question.

Best tool for planning drives!!!

What a fantastic app for looking at weather during a drive and planning! It is simple enough for determining drive time for short drives and robust enough with customizations for planning long drives. I recently completed a cross-country trip. This app allowed me to figure out where to stop and when to depart each day to dodge weather events throughout the trip. Examples: I got through one area just as it started snowing before it got bad enough to hinder driving. It allowed me to bypass a hail storm in an area and miss some major thunderstorms in another area. It also allowed me to get to my destination before a winter storm set in which is expected to dump 6” of snow. Now, I know that weather events can’t always be avoided, but I also see the advantage of this app is that you can at least know what to expect during the drive. If you drive, I highly recommend adding this app!

Major Glitches

I am so anxious to find an app that does what this app claims to do, but this one isn’t there. After several times, deleting and reconfiguring a road trip I have already planned on another app, I am not going to waste any more time on this. Each time I tried, stop number 4 could not get the times right, and therefore threw off the entire trip beyond that. I can’t possibly leave a stop at 6AM, make another stop, 50 miles away, and stay there 4 hrs (leave here at 10:48AM), drive another 50 miles, and get to my next stop at 7:58AM. Especially since the route is going east across time zones, not the opposite. I really tried to get that stop fixed, including changing locations, just adding the time there, to the time at the previous stop, and deleting and re adding it multiple times. Each time, the stop 4 made the same timed error. There are other things that make the app not so user friendly, like not having a location for Death Valley, a National Park, and not allowing you to add a waypoint off the designated route. Sometimes diversions are part of a trip, and I am looking for a travel app with weather, that allows you to set your own trip. This is not that. It is a fun app to play with but, it isn’t as functional as I would like when planning a trip across country.

Weather Channel’s road trip planner helps predict the forecast along your drive

Road trips are one of the ultimate summer activities, but it takes a lot of planning especially if you aim to head across the country. While you can map out exactly where you’ll eat and stay and what to go see, plans can change if you come across unexpected weather. Instead of rolling with the punches, you can now attempt to make plan B if you get hit with bad weather by making use of a new The Weather Channel travel planner. In collaboration with Stamen Design, the road trip planner will show you the weather forecast for each stop you make along the drive to help you prepare or choose a new route entirely.

The road trip planner can be especially helpful if there are several different routes you can take from one city to another. “So let’s say you’re driving from New York to San Francisco, and you’re trying to decide whether to go straight across or loop up or down a bit,” the Stamen Design blog post reads. “This will give you a sense for whether it’s going to be rainy or sunny when you plan to be in the middle of Nebraska.”

To get started, simply type in your starting and ending cities. Click the plus bubble to add stops and the app will generate the predicted weather of that general location. You can also go into the details of each city to note what day and time you plan to leave to get the most accurate forecast. However, since weather predictions are not made for more than a week at a time, things can be a bit limited in that regard.

While the map won’t tell you the best recommended route, it can help with knowing exactly what to bring on the trip. Still, like most weather forecasts, you can’t always expect the predictions to be entirely correct. But for a free app that provides a useful insight, we don’t see a reason not to use The Weather Channel travel planner. Unless, of course, you like the feeling of uncertainty or driving in a storm. COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — Good Friday morning! Grab the umbrella and keep it handy for today, this weekend, and next week.

We have a stationary front parked over the region. This will act like a conveyor belt and we will have waves of disturbances ride along that stationary front that will bring us waves of rain from time to time. We will have a good chance of rain today and this weekend with a 70% to 60% chance of rain each day. The chance of rain drops to a 40% chance of Monday. Then Tuesday and the rest of next week the chance of rain goes back up to 60%. The rain could happen anytime day or night, but the best chance each day will be during the afternoons or early evenings when we will warm to around 80 each day. Rainfall totals will vary greatly from location to location because the rain will be spotty across Ohio, but on average it looks like we could see 2”-3”+ of rain over the next 10 days. The good news is that none of the rain appears to be a washout lasting all day, but just be prepared to get caught in rain from time to time. The chance of severe weather is unlikely, but this is still a great time to use our free “Ohio WX” app to see where the rain is located, plus there is a handy futurecast to help you plan out the next few hours if you are at an outdoor event.

As far as temperatures go, we will remain around 10 degrees above normal. We hit 87 for the high yesterday, for the hottest day of the year so far. Today we will have a high around 81 and our normal high temperature today is 70. 78 for the high on Saturday then 80 on Sunday. Morning low temps in the lower 60s. It will also be a tad humid to make it feel a couple degrees warmer. Monday’s high of 76 will be the coolest day on the 7-day forecast and our lowest chance of rain, 40%. We warm back into the lower 80s for Tuesday through later next week. So staying very warm, humid, with some hit or miss rain for the next 7 days. Winds will remain rather light most of the time for the weekend and next week.

It does appear we will get a stronger cold front heading into next weekend (Mother's Day) to give us a lower chance of rain and slightly cooler temperatures next weekend. At this point, frost looks unlikely for the rest of spring. I would still hold off planting the garden or flowers if your soil is very wet, next week. You want to wait until the soil is drier to plant. If you plant in very wet soil then it will dry out very hard and the roots will have a hard time spreading into that hard-packed soil. Plus if you plant in wet soil then the roots will not spread out to get established because there is plenty of water right there at the roots. When you get a dry spell in the summer then the roots have not spread out to search for water when it needs it the most. Wait until the soil dries out for a stronger plant for the months ahead. UK weather: Met Office warning extended after UK hit by thunderstorms and heavy rain

Large parts of southern England, as well as parts of South Wales, have been hit by thunderstorms and heavy rain overnight - and the Met Office has extended one of the two warnings it had in place.

The first yellow weather alert came into force at 8pm on Wednesday and covered an area stretching from Portsmouth to Plymouth, and northwards to South Wales.

The Met Office warned of difficult driving conditions and some flooding under its alert, which is in place until 8am this morning.

The second warning kicked in at 11pm last night and covered nearly all of southeast England, stretching as far north as Oxford and including London.

It was meant to be in force until 6am this morning, but has now been extended until 10am.

"Thunderstorms are expected through the morning, before gradually clearing from the east. Some travel disruption and flooding possible," said the Met Office.

Around 2cm to 4cm of rain was forecast to fall overnight, with 5cm possible in some places.

Met Office meteorologist Alex Deakin said: "You may well get woken up tonight by a rumble of thunder, or some flashes of lightning across parts of the South.

"A lot of heavy rain falling in a short space of time as well."

He said it could create a lot of spray and surface water on the roads for commuters on Thursday morning.

Elsewhere, it will stay dry with temperatures mostly holding up in double figures across England and Wales, or staying at around 8C to 9C in towns and cities further north.

Mr Deakin said: "A cloudy start then to Thursday one way or another, still some heavy bursts of rain early on across the South West.

"That should tend to clear away, but always the likelihood of further showers across southern parts of England, Mid and South Wales."

He added: "Parts of northwest Scotland, Northern Ireland, northwest England, much of the Midlands down towards East Anglia should have a fine and sunny day tomorrow."
