The 22 Best Instagram Travel Accounts To Inspire You

instagram travel accounts to follow

Instagram is simple, it’s visual and it creates a quick emotional impact! It’s also a great way to discover new places around the world. No wonder I’m always seeking the best Instagram travel accounts to follow!

Even though I despise the direction Instagram is going, with self-proclaimed influencers spreading like wildfire ( beautypreneurs is a thing now…) I confess I do spend a significant amount of time there .

Sometimes double tapping cat videos. Sometimes stalking my friends. But I’m especially interested in new travel inspiration. And now I’m sharing them with you (the travel content, not the cats).

Best Instagram Travel Accounts to Follow >>

For this list, I tried to avoid hollow influencers who only use travel as a way of getting new backdrops for their own photos. The world needs valuable content, interesting things to learn and see and especially people who truly love to travel.

With no particular order, these are my favorite Instagram travel bloggers to feed your wanderlust (list updated May 2019). They are travel bloggers, Youtube stars, journalists or simple amateurs sharing real, honest, and interesting content.

Let’s get inspired!

1 @paulodelvalle

Paulo’s was one of the first accounts I followed in Instagram. He’s a Brazilian travel photographer, but mostly a storyteller. His amazing photos in the most varied landscapes inspired me to follow my own wanderlust dream.

Estou muito impressionado com a beleza dos templos e santuários japoneses. Cada um mais bonito que o outro! 😍 I’m really impressed with the beauty of the japanese temples and shrines. Each one prettier than the other! 😍 Tokyo, Japan. 🇯🇵 w/ @marlonduque A post shared by Paulo del Valle (@paulodelvalle) on Jan 3, 2016 at 6:11am PST

2 @youngadventuress

Liz is one of my favorite travel bloggers out there and Young Adventuress is a BIG SUCCESS in the travel blog world. What I particularly enjoy about her is how down-to-earth and unpretentious she is.

Her gallery in Instagram has bits and bobs from everywhere in the world, but mostly from the awe-inspiring New Zealand outdoors.

4 @Tourist2Townie

I’ve been a follower of Gareth’s videos on Tourist2Townie’s Youtube channel for quite some time. I’ve always been a fan of the very down-to-earth and humble way he approaches travel, still managing to be informative and truly helpful.

His his Instagram “is secondary” (his words, not mine), but still very much worth it if you ask me.

Daniel is a landscape photographer who shoots STUNNING pictures in remote places like Japan , Russia or Norway .

I’m going to be honest: I don’t know much about whoever is behind this account. In fact, I know nothing.

All I know is that the pictures here are breathtaking and make me want to go places. Apart from the visual element, there are also several inspiring descriptions. So Andy , whoever you are, you are awesome!

View this post on Instagram It was so normal in Myanmar to pass groups of young monks or nuns on the street or in temples….I even got cut off in traffic by monks on motor scooters! On my last night in Mandalay, I had just left the Sandamuni Pagoda when I came across these young Buddhist nuns draped in pink. I climbed Mandalay Hill into the sunset and who knows where they ended up. It is amazing how such disparate lives can pass in a flash…and how we smile at each other in our shared humanity. Thank you, Myanmar, for being friendly, welcoming, beautiful, and mysterious. I’ll be back and I hope that whatever changes as the country is opened to the world, that it doesn’t take the joy from the spirit of the beautiful Myanmar people. // #FujifilmX_US @FujifilmX_US @bhphoto #mywinteraway #FujifilmXT1 #Fujifilm @NatGeoCreative @NatGeoTravel A post shared by Krista Rossow (@kristarossow) on Mar 5, 2016 at 8:32pm PST

[2023 GUIDE] How to Start a Travel Instagram – 8 Tips from a Travel Influencer

*POST SUMMARY: How do you use Instagram for travel ? Tips from a travel influencer who has worked with international tourism boards and luxury hotels – read below!

Starting a travel Instagram has opened my opportunities for travel influencers to travel the world while making money online . But the question still remains, do travel Instagram pages still make money in 2022? The answer is YES! Who would’ve thought like ten years ago that a platform like Instagram could eventually lead people to pursue their passion, such as traveling while earning a full-time income ? The content creators, who have some of the best travel pages on Instagram , generate their income mostly from tourism and brand sponsored content. Today, tourism boards hire Influencers with a trendsetting travel Instagram accounts to promote their country’s tourism spots.

According to a  National Geographic  report, travel influencers provide an incredible amount of investment when it comes to promoting tourism.  As a result, influencers with a big following and an aspirational travel Instagram pages get hired sometimes on a monthly basis, raking in full-time income while traveling the world. It’s a lifestyle that every aspiring digital nomad wants to achieve.  Considering the opportunities in the travel Instagram space, every wanderluster wants to emulate travel influencers who get to pay a lot of money and travel for free.  Unfortunately, many fail to realize that becoming an ‘influencer’ and having a trendsetting travel Instagram page takes a lot of work and requires a certain level of professionalism to turn this passion into a full-time career through Instagram.

In this article, I will give eight simple tips to help position yourself to become a travel influencer and turn your Instagram into a full-time career.

Table of Contents

How to Become an Influencer on Instagram? Find Your Travel Instagram Niche

travel page instagram

If you’ve ever wondered how to become a travel influencer , your travel Instagram needs to hone and focus on a specific niche to establish yourself as a thought leader and an authority in that subject.  Traveling is a huge niche with so many sub-niches you can focus on. The different types of travel niches are adventure travel, luxury travel, health and wellness travel, gastro tourism, themed cruises, tropical/island travel, hiking, winter destinations, and so on. Picking one (or if you can blend a couple of other sub-niches through your content), can help you establish authority over the subject.

An example of a travel Instagrammer in the adventure sub-niche would be posting content related to exploring mostly wild, outdoor, and exotic locations that requires a bit of adrenaline. The images and videos in adventure travel give a high focus on non-touristy places, destinations that are still unknown to the masses. Trolltunga, the now popular site in Norway, reported an increase in their tourism from 500 to 40,000 between 2009 and 2014. The spike in tourism credits the rise of Instagram between this period.  Another example of a sub-niche in the travel niche is luxury travel. To be regarded as a go-to influencer in this sub-niche, your travel Instagram would have to be filled with luxury travel content. Examples would be pictures or videos flying in first class, or staying in luxury hotels, or traveling in style that people aspire to achieve someday.

Build Your Instagram Brand

how to start a travel instagram

Digital branding is key to helping your travel Instagram page stand out from the many other successful travel influencers. Many creative travel influencers have spectacular content through their stunning travel photography and inspirational videos. With the number of travel influencers out there today, you need something more than great content to stand out. With that said, digital branding gives you that extra edge to compete with other travel Instagrammers vying for travel campaigns via Instagram sponsorship .  Building a digital brand is part of a travel influencer becoming an aspiration and inspiration.

Perhaps loyalty is the most significant advantage and benefit of creating an aspiring and inspiring digital brand. When you have a loyal following, they are more likely to engage and interact with your content, which is critical if you want to grow the followers of your travel Instagram page. A way to create an inspiring and aspiring brand for your travel Instagram page is to post visually striking images or videos consistently. If your content doesn’t capture your followers’ attention, they will just scroll past your post and be buried among the rest.  Another strategy to create an Instagram brand is through your voice. Do your captions tell a meaningful story that engages your audience to think, and inspire them to join the conversation? We spend quite a lot of time ensuring that our captions on each of our posts reflect our brand and represent our voice.

Take Great Photos

how to become an influencer on instagram

Instagram is a visual platform, so it should not be a surprise that taking great photos is a massive part of becoming a travel influencer. But don’t think you need to be a professional photographer to create visually striking imagery to inspire your followers about your travels. It’s about knowing the simple tips and tricks of creating a beautiful image and finding your style of photography. Once again, being a travel influencer doesn’t require you to invest money to study photography. However, it does require you to study the basic rules of photography and find a style that works for you. For example, every travel influencer I know is familiar with the rule of thirds, where the basic idea is NOT to place your subject and focus on the center of the image.

Another photography basics are lighting, where travel influencers mostly shoot during a specific time of day (mostly in the early morning) to have the softest lighting possible.  Apart from learning the basics of photography , many travel influencers use Presets to improve their pictures. These days, it’s pretty rare for a travel influencer not to have a preset of their own that they sell so that you can easily copy their feed. If you prefer not to spend money on presets, you can still improve your pictures by knowing some tips and tricks on how to improve  Instagram filters .  Lastly, taking exceptional photos also doesn’t mean having the fanciest and most expensive equipment. For us, we do use a professional camera that helps us create some of our best content. However, there are also moments where a picture looks just as great as using an iPhone.

Take Great Videos

Mastering Videos is another medium that travel Instagrammers need to master. We especially like to take videos on our travels and make it a point to post on our feed. Videos allow us to capture our experience on our travels better than images can. Editing is one of the necessary skills in creating a powerful Instagram travel video. Great editing would quickly tell a story and draw your viewers to keep watching the video. Focus using some of your best shots on the first five to ten seconds of your video to ensure you captivate your audience’s attention.  Consider using video editing apps such as Adobe Premiere Pro , or edit videos directly on your phone with apps such as Videorama . Both of these editing apps are user friendly and easy to follow and master.

After you’ve mastered the editing portion, the next step is selecting the right music that goes along well with your travel videos.  Some of the equipment to use to build our Instagram travel pages are drones, a professional camera, and an iPhone. We especially love drone shots because it allows us to capture certain angles that would otherwise be impossible. Professional cameras can capture quality videos as well and are high on the ground level. Lastly, iPhones are also excellent quality for capturing videos for stories.

Travel Instagram Stories

how to become a travel influencer

Instagram stories are, without a doubt, one of the platform’s popular outlet.  Considering that editing photos and videos take time, posting on Instagram stories about your travels allows you to give a preview of what’s to come. For us, we rarely post our content on our feed immediately following our travels. The amount of time it takes to edit a video and photograph just takes too long.

As a result, content creators use Instagram stories to share their content immediately. The posts are typically instantaneous and don’t require editing effort. Instagram stories also allow their followers to get an instant glimpse of their travels, and allow content creators to document everything that is happening during their travels and share them with their followers. It’s fun and a great way to interact with your followers. Instagram stories are such a powerful medium to take your travel Instagram to the next level because it allows you to go off-brand. Regardless of being a travel influencer, posting content not related to travel is entirely acceptable and won’t be seen as ‘weird.’ Posting content not related to your niche allows you to show off a little bit about yourself and other things that your followers can relate to.

Use Hashtags

Travel Instagrammers who get hired for paid travel campaigns, the use of hashtags in almost always part of the deal of the job. It means that for every post we make about the travel campaign, we have to use that specific hashtag related to that campaign.  Using hashtags can make a difference in getting your content discovered and ultimately land on the explorer page. The hashtag allows Instagram to identify people who are not following you but may be interested in your topic. In other words, you could be gaining a lot more followers if you use hashtags correctly.  So use hashtags effectively, whether on your feed posts or stories, chances are your content will reach a new audience you’ve never had before!

Collaborate with Other Travel Influencers

travel instagram niche

Part of the job of travel Instagrammers is to network off Instagram.  Not many realize that part of the hustle is to meet other travel Instagrammers and collaborate on creating content. They tend to tag each other on stories and on static posts, which creates an opportunity to be introduced to a brand new set of audiences and grow their accounts.  For us, the best part of meeting other travel Instagrammers is getting an opportunity to be invited to other travel campaigns. If a travel campaign is looking for 15 other content creators, you can potentially get an invite your new travel Instagrammer friend endorses you to be part of the campaign.  Collaborating with other travel influencers also allows you to learn from each other. There are so many creative strategies and knowledge that influencers can share with each other – from little tricks on taking pictures, or how to edit videos, or possibly learning the business side of having a travel Instagram page – networking with other influencers is a crucial part of their growth in the business.

Starting a Travel Instagram Hub Account

Many might be surprised to know that you can still start a travel Instagram account even if you don’t have a lot of personal travel content to post.  You might have just said ‘How?!’ Many Instagram travel pages are created to repost other travel content creators. It’s a curated travel page where they repost other travel pictures or videos while giving credit to the original poster. It’s a great strategy to build your travel content and followers in the beginning if you don’t have a lot of travel-related content to post yet.  Some of the Instagram accounts that are travel hub accounts that you should check out our @theglobewanderer , @welivetoexplore , @beautifuldestinations , and @earthpix to name a few.  The travel hub accounts mentioned amassed followers in the millions, and followed by some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry, both in the US and abroad.

Final Word To Start Your Travel Instagram

There you have it!  Traveling while getting paid is possible with Instagram. It’s a dream that many wanderlusters aspire to have given the freedom to pursue your passion for traveling while getting paid to do it.  It’s totally doable, but it seriously takes a lot of hustle, consistency, and dedication to achieve the lifestyle of traveling the world while getting paid.  It’s also important to add that a certain level of professionalism is required to achieve success in the business. Besides creating content, travel influencers have to become business savvy and know how to pitch and negotiate when it comes to paid Instagram sponsorships – it’s all part of the game!

How to Become a Travel Instagram Influencer: 7 Secrets for Success

Travel instagram accounts have inspired people from all over the globe to set out on adventures and explore new cultures.

These nomadic influencers partner with brands in an infinite number of ways. They travel the world and create gorgeous content in exchange for free gear, trips and once-in-a-lifetime experiences. In fact, influencers are collaborating with many of those brands right here on Perlu !

Seems like a dream job, right? That’s why so many people want to know how to become a travel blogger on instagram.

To help you get started, we’ll reveal some inside tips from top travel influencers so you, too, can earn a living while working with fun brands and exploring the world! Read on to discover 7 tips to start your own travel Instagram account with a splash.

1. Start with a Smart Username

Don’t get too fancy here. Avoid using confusing symbols or spellings in your username. We suggest either use your actual name (for authenticity) or a travel-inspired moniker.

Whatever username you select, keep it short and sweet. And if you’re on other social media platforms or have a blog or website, be sure your username is consistent throughout your brand touchpoints. Users will jump from your Instagram to your blog to your Facebook group and back again, so consistency is key.

If you can make your username and/or brand memorable and “ownable,” that is gold.

For example, travel blogger Lesley Murphy was able to tie-in her name and her favorite topic of discussion with “ The Road Les Traveled .” (Get it, “Les?”) Her website is TheRoadLesTraveled.com (“ownable”) and her Instagram account is her actual name (authenticity).

Make it real, authentic and ownable.

2. Find Your Focus + Your Voice

You aren’t the world’s first travel Instagram influencer, but don’t let that intimidate you. There are plenty of ways to stand out in your niche , no matter how oversaturated it feels.

travel foodie influencer taking photo of food

What makes you unlike any other travel Instagram influencer is, well…you. You have your own voice, your own personality, your own likes and dislikes.

Christina Kantzavelos of BuenQamino

Better yet, if you have hobbies outside of travel, cross-pollinate your passions to make your Instagram account truly unique. Anthony Bourdain, chef and travel documentarian, combined his three favorite passions: food, travel, and meeting new people. This cross-pollination made him one of the most beloved and influential celebrities in the travel world.

So what else do you love? Fashion? Sustainability? Food? Numchucks table tennis ? (Yes, it’s a thing.)

Christina Kantzavelos of BuenQamino loves travel and food – and she has celiac disease. Instead of letting her food allergies stop her from traveling the world, she created a “gluten-free, dairy-free, autoimmune-friendly travel and lifestyle blog” that inspires others to travel despite similar limitations.

Find your loves, combine them and, above all else, be authentic.

3. Learn to Take Good Photos

Since Instagram is a visual platform, good photos are essential. Notice we said “good” photos, not “professional” photos. You’re not Thomas Havel , professional outdoor and adventure photographer – and that’s okay!

There’s no need to drop thousands of dollars on a camera. You probably have the perfect camera in your hand already – on your smartphone. Instead, why not spend significantly less $$$ on an iPhone photography course ? Or better yet, hit up YouTube for some free pointers.

travel influencers taking selfie

One thing you’ll notice about a lot of successful travel Instagrammers is that they have a solid aesthetic – in other words, their Instagram has a theme that makes their feed look beautifully coordinated.

A theme isn’t necessary, but if you want one, start figuring out what kind of aesthetic you’re going for. Light and summery? Dark and moody? Earthy and neutral? Bright and minimal?

“I also utilized a theme, either a color palette or a place or something that when people looked at my entire account versus just one photo, that it looked interesting and pleasing,” says Perlu member Cacinda Maloney of Points and Travel . “Many IGers put the same filter on all their photos, which works for some, but I don’t do this, as I like bright photos for some themes and less for others depending on the location.”

Start researching the best editing apps such as Lightroom, VSCO and Snapseed. Test them all out until you find the one that works best for you. If you find yourself struggling to create filters and presets you love or a consistent feed, check out sites like Creative Market , where Instagrammers and photography experts alike create packs of presets for people just like you! And ask other travel Instagrammers what their favorite tools and resources are.

Travel Influencer Dr. Cacinda Maloney Horseback on Beach

“Everyone knows how important it is to use great quality photographs on a travel Instagram account,” says Perlu member Dana Freeman of Dana Freeman Travels . “The old adage ‘a picture is worth a thousand words’ has never been truer. However, these days, with so many travel Instagram accounts it is more important than ever you post authentic photos. Followers want to be inspired to travel to the destination that you are sharing. They won’t be able to do that if they can’t actually picture themselves there.”

No matter how much or how little you edit your photos, remember that authenticity is key. The majority of your time should be spent finding and telling stories and interacting with your audience.

4. Engage Your Audience!

“Engagement is key,” says Christina of BuenQamino. “Responding and interacting with your audience through comments, stories, messages, etc. is quite impactful. It lets us know you’re not a bot, or a person hired to just post and do the bare minimum.”

travel instagrammer engaging with her audience

Engagement makes you appear approachable and authentic. When you aren’t creating stories or telling stories, take time out of your day—every day—to interact with your audience.

Better yet, set aside time during each day for your audience. Half an hour may be all you need. It will pay dividends faster than most any other technique you can implement.

Reply to comments and DMs (even the negative ones, if you want). Ask your audience questions. However, don’t be a “askhole: a person who asks for advice, yet always does the opposite of what they were told.” Involve your audience and let them participate. For example, you could use the Q&A feature on Instagram to ask your audience where you should travel next.

“Engage, engage, engage,” Christina says. “Did I mention engagement?”

To create an even stronger connection, give your audience more than they expect. Not only should you show great photos – give them travel tips.

How do you find cheap flights? What airlines are the best? How do you find your rooms – hotels? Airbnbs? Word of mouth? What are your favorite travel apps? What are your best budget tips?

Your content tells your story, yes, but the more you help your followers, the more loyal they will become.

“You also need to engage, comment and like, other photos within your genre,” says Cacinda of Points and Travel. One great way to do that is with Perlu ! Head over to the profiles of fellow travel influencers, give them a follow, and then head to their Instagram profiles and follow them there, too. This sets you up for amazing collaboration opportunities.

5. Use Relevant Travel Hashtags

This tip may seem like a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised at the mistakes even veterans make.

100 million photos and videos are shared on Instagram every day, most of them using hashtags, and that number is conservative. So choose your hashtags wisely. Find a happy medium with hashtags that are popular enough that people are actually searching for them, but not so popular that your photo quickly gets pushed down by other posts.

travel instagram influencer choosing hashtags

Obviously, #travel is No. 1, but that means millions of people are using that hashtag. You won’t stand out. You may get found by a few people via that hashtag, but the chances of really growing your followers through #travel are slim.

So research other travel-related hashtags. Check out the hashtags Travel + Leisure and Conde Nast Traveler use. Piggyback their hashtags to grab their eyeballs. Some companies such as Atalanta create branded hashtags (#atalantaworld) that travel instagram accounts can use for the chance to get featured on their Instagram. Talk about a sweet way to grow your audience fast.

#blogtravel, #culturetrip, #travelwriter are all gathering thousands of followers, while at the same time appealing to a narrower audience. A family going to Disney World could use #travel, which is useless if you’re, say, an international travel writer. #travelwriter may be a better option.

Consider using location-specific posts, too. And while you’re at it – geotags!

Instagram allows users to search by location, so when they search for places you’ve visited, BOOM – they find you.

Activity-specific posts help too. And regional-specific hashtags. The better you define the content, the more likely you are to receive the perfect set of eyeballs. You could even tag restaurants, hotels and businesses you visit on your trip. Who knows – they may pay you to come back!

travel instagram influencer in hotel room with luggage

Our final word of advice: create your very own travel-related hashtag. Make one that is specific to you – one that defines you and helps your followers find you. Then, use that hashtag consistently so your followers come to expect it. They may even start using it, thus leading their followers back to you.

6. Use Instagram Stories + Instagram Live

You have many tools at your disposal. The trick is to amplify your brand as efficiently – and cost-effectively – as possible without getting lost in the crowd.

Here’s a great start: utilize Instagram Stories and Instagram Live to the very best of your abilities like Stephanie White of Stephanie White Travels .

“On Instagram stories, I love to promote my blog posts and latest Instagram posts to increase my engagement,” Stephanie says.

Instagram newbies are often so excited about entering the social space, they clutter their feed with post after post. But remember – quality trumps quantity. So there’s no reason to exhaust yourself by editing 5 photos and writing 5 captions every day. One really good, authentic post a day (or even just a few a week) can have a greater impact than multiple mediocre posts a day.

“When I first started on IG in 2014, I was posting photos four times a day starting at 9 AM,” says Cacinda of Points and Travel. “Once I reached 20K followers, I slowed down to one time a day at 9 am EST.”

On the other hand, when you’re traveling, there are a ton of sites and experiences you’ll probably want to post about. If you’re visiting Cairo, you may be tempted to post a photo of the pyramids and the Nile and the inside the pyramids and the Airbnb you’re staying at and your stroll through the local markets and…well, everything.

But that could lead to dozens of photos. That’s where Instagram Stories comes in.

Instagram stories allows you to post more content without overwhelming your audience’s feed. You can even utilize polls and Q&As within Instagram Stories.

Another cool IG feature? Instagram Live.

travel Instagram influencer using Instagram live

Instagram Live lets your audience follow your adventures as they happen. Instead of posting a blurry photo of the inside of a dark pharaoh’s tomb, you can just livestream it! It doesn’t get much more authentic – or mesmerizing – than live-streaming. Your audience gets to see you at your most authentic and exciting and interact with you in real time via comments.

7. Meet Other Travel Instagrammers

Influencers are a friendly bunch. Yes, they’re competitive and want to grow their brands, but the best influencers have found that when they play nice and collaborate with others, that’s when they really see growth.

Right now, on Perlu, you can find other travel influencers like Meg Jerrard and Kavita Favelle . Some travel together and share their content. Some co-host giveaways and contests. Others brainstorm video content, consult and co-write blogs together.

“I also like to partner with other Instagrammers and have both of us shout out the other on Instagram stories to build both of our followings,” says Stephanie of Stephanie White Travels.

It’s a crazy, growing, exciting, fantastic world out there on Instagram. In fact, there are more than 1 billion users .

Get out there and share your stories with the world. As they say, you only get one chance to make a first impression, so be sure to start the right way. Learn from others, help others and tell great stories. Next thing you know, you’ll build a killer following.

Lauren focuses on solo female travel – she has been EVERYWHERE and has the pics to prove it!

Favourite travel memory: I was recently solo travelling in Peru, and took a day trip from Cusco to Rainbow Mountain. I was so nervous for the high altitude hike, finishing off at an elevation of just over 17,000 feet, but I managed to make it on foot instead of taking the horses they offer along the way. It was challenging, rewarding, and the views of Rainbow Mountain itself were absolutely stunning.

Sshh!... This is a secret

Yvonne, 28, from Germany, just returned from a round the world trip – her New Zealand pics are particularly awe-inspiring!

Favourite travel memory: Realising that overcoming your own fears is the best moment ever. Jumping in the sea to swim with a whale shark, jumping out of a plane or hiking in the mountains for three days – priceless.

Favourite destination: Since I did an exchange year, which made the country part of me, it will always be New Zealand. Open minded, friendly people, breath-taking countryside and countless memories.

3. jetsetchristina

Luxury travel blogger Christina has been to 55 countries. Think tanned skin, beaches, and crystal clear water – you’ll want to book a trip to paradise ASAP.

Favourite travel memory: If I could combine a few of my favourite travel memories into one perfect day, it would be waking up to a seaside breakfast on the cliffs of Bali, snorkelling in Brazil, walking with lions in Mauritius, hiking Cinque Terre in Italy, soaking up the sun in Saint Tropez, sipping on painkillers at Soggy Dollar bar in the BVI, having dinner in the Eiffel Tower, and dancing all night in the Gili Islands.

Favourite destination: Cape Town and Italy. Cape Town, South Africa blew me away. It has everything. A vibrant African, British and Dutch influenced culture, majestic landscapes at the edge of the Atlantic and Indian oceans, wildlife like no other place in the world, unbelievable beaches (some with penguins roaming around), and an incredible wine country. Italy is pure magic. It’s no question why it’s the world’s most popular tourist destination. Italy is so perfect that it doesn’t even feel real. Walking in Venice feels like you’re walking in a dream. Boating in Lake Como feels like you’ve swapped lives with George Clooney. Jumping off the rocks of the Amalfi Coast feels like you’re diving head first into the best day of your life. Listening to accordions play “that’s amore” feels like you’re starring in an old Hollywood romance. Walking the streets of the Vatican feels like you’re living in a Renaissance painting. And drinking wine in Tuscany feels a little like falling in love.

4. heartmybackpack

Silvia chose Norway as her country after travelling the world and focuses on solo female travel, with beautifully themed feed from snowy mountains to colourful cities to beaches.

Followers: 52.3k

Favourite travel memory: I loved hitchhiking along the Pamir Highway in Tajikistan. The landscape is stunning, and the people there were just so kind. One of the days my friends and I caught a ride with a truck driver who drove us for about 10 hours, stopping in each village we drove through to pick up local delicacies like pears and bags of boiled meat for us to try.

Favourite destination: It’s so hard to choose! I’ve fallen in love with most every country I’ve travelled through, but I guess Norway will always hold the top spot in my heart, as this is the place I’ve chosen to call my home. But I also really love Central Asia, the Caucasus, Iran, and Siberia.

5. saltyluxe

Travel Instagram - saltyluxe

Sarah focuses on adventure and solo female travel – think soft filters, palm trees, and oodles of wanderlust.

Favourite travel memory: Cruising the Californian coast in our vintage Kombi Van. We were on the road for 6 weeks, met the most amazing people & experienced scenery that blew us away like Joshua tree National Park, Big Sur, Yosemite & the surf coast of San Diego! We still laugh about our time spent in our trusty van, sleeping out the front of peoples mansions in Malibu, mechanical breakdowns in the desert & no showers for a week. This to me is real travel, rich in memories & good vibes to cherish forever!

Favourite destination: Belize (no doubt in my mind the best place I’ve ever been!) I could talk about this endlessly!

6. thisbatteredsuitcase

Travel Instagram - thisbatteredsuitcase

Canadian Brenna has been to 93 countries – she focuses on solo female travel with bright bold colours and an endless diversity of locations – you’ll never get bored scrolling through her feed.

Followers: 15.3k

Favourite travel memory: I’ve been very fortunate to have made some incredible memories over 11 years of travelling, but one of my favourites is also one of my most recent. Although I travel solo most of the time, I recently travelled around East Africa with my mother for six weeks. Visiting that part of the world had been my number one travel dream since I was a little girl, and we were lucky enough to see lions, cheetahs, rhinos, giraffes, leopards, and more. I’ll never forget how to felt to be surrounded by a hundred elephants as they grazed in Tanzania’s Tarangire National Park, especially with my mum by my side. It was one of the most special moments of my life so far.

Favourite destination : Picking one favourite destination is always going to be a difficult task, but the fact that I keep wanting to go back to Italy must mean something. I’ve been about a dozen times now and I never seem to run out of places I want to go, things I want to do, and food I want to eat! I love how geographically diverse the country is – from mountains to cities to the sea – as well as how deep-rooted the history and culture are. Not only that, I’ve always had an amazing time with the people I meet while there. And really, any country where it’s acceptable (or maybe expected) for me to eat pasta and drink wine all day is always going to come out on top.

7. earthexpedition

8. wearekingingit

Favourite travel memory: Swimming with whale sharks on the Philippines – it was breath taking, it was scary and it was the most exciting time of our travels to date.

Favourite destination: Definitely Iceland, you can’t compare it to anywhere on earth, it has waterfalls, geysers, mountains lakes and whales!

9. explorista

Travel Instagram - explorista

Milou says she is “scared of everything but doesn’t let it stop her”. She showcases gorgeous city shots that make travel seem a possibility closer to home.

Followers: 5.9k

Favourite travel memory: One of my favourite travel memories was when I surprised my parents by popping up in California. They had been in the US on a road trip for two weeks, and were going to California to meet family who lives there. What they didn’t know is that I booked a flight, got on a train, traveled for over 24 hours, and was waiting behind the wall in the kitchen to surprise them when they showed up. I still smile when I think about the look on my dads face when I tapped on his shoulder and he turned around.

Favourite destination: London! I was lucky enough to live there for seven months and I just keep going back. I’ll take any excuse! It’s the place in the world where I feel most at home. London has anything you could ever want, whether you are in the mood for a party, some great food or a visit to some world class museums… it’s all there. And the vibe is just so vibrant and accepting that it was very easy for me to blend right in. I’m really hoping I’ll have another stint there in the future.

10. the_globbers

Travel Instagram - the_globbers

Gay travel couple Luca and Ale’s feed is filled with gorgeous filters in some of the world’s most stunning places, all shot with a fantastic camera.

Favourite travel memory: Climbing the Poem Mountain to see Halong Bay from the top. One of the most exciting adventures we took during our 7 month journey around SEA.

Favourite destination: Bali. Something about this destination gives us a feeling of great peace, freedom and serenity that is very hard to find here in Western countries. That’s why we choose Bali as our home now.

11. florabaker

British writer and traveller Flora explores solo female and off-the-beaten track travel, including visiting Syria.

Followers: 11.4k

Favourite travel memory: It’s hard to pinpoint, as it changes with each destination! But a recent fave was when I was walking through Longyearbyen (in Svalbard, Arctic Norway) last summer. It was past midnight but the sun was still shining bright: I was walking down the centre of the empty main road, keeping a vague eye out for rogue polar bears, and suddenly couldn’t believe how lucky I was to be in such an inaccessible and surreal place. That feeling of happiness and ‘right’ness is definitely a memory to hold onto.

Favourite destination: Has to be Colombia. It’s such a beautiful and diverse country, but the best part for me is how generous and friendly the people are – after my first visit I made such immediate close friendships with Colombians that I ended up returning at least three times over the course of the next year!

Koby is a photographer, so as expected, her shots are AMAZING. We won’t lie, the envy is strong on this one!

Followers: 53.7k

Favourite travel memory: Looking forward to free bowls of guacamole, salsa & corn chips every time you sit down to eat in Mexico! Is it just me or is food one of the best parts of travelling?!

Favourite destination: Cuba was a highlight, such a challenge & cultural experience especially having had no Spanish lessons! Having a lot of the tourist attractions and scenes all to yourself, with such a beautiful variety of countryside, beach & city! Plus who doesn’t love a pink convertible?!

13. pausethemoment

Favourite travel memory: Each year I join a Greek Island voyage with a company called Sun Fun You and we cruise around the lesser known Greek Islands in the east on a custom built Turkish gulet. It has been the highlight of my year since 2015.

Favourite destination: Mexico (I call it my home base and I simply can’t get enough of it).

Favourite destination: South Africa – so much to see, affordable and beautiful.

15. tourist2townie

Travel Instagram - tourist2townie

Gareth likes to travel slowly and deeply to understand the people & cultures of a country – it definitely reflects in his stunning snaps.

Followers: 26.5k

Favourite travel memory: I lived in Brazil for a year around 2014, and my primary goal was to somehow, some way find a job at the World Cup. Long story short, I managed to join an Australian tour company, shooting daily videos over the course of 21 days during the tournament and was able to attend five World Cup matches. It was a dream come true.

Favourite destination: While it is fresh in my mind, my most recent “Travel Deeper” adventure in Japan was as eye-opening as it was life-changing. Culture, food, intrigue – Japan is an explorer’s paradise.

16. everysteph

Favourite travel memory: Aaah so hard to choose! My recent favourite one is when I took a mountain flight in Nepal and flew over Mt. Everest. I felt goosebumps and I felt so small in front of the magnificence of the nature.

Favourite destination: Thailand – people are so friendly, the non-touristy islands still idyllic, and I feel just at home there!

17. adventuresofsophh

Travel Instagram - adventuresofsophh

Sophie has one of the fewest followings in our list but is one of our faves. You can’t help but ‘like’ all her shots – every pic is simply gorgeous and makes you think ‘I HAVE to be there’.

Followers: 2.2k

Favourite travel memory: Would take me back to the first solo trip I did to Thailand back in 2014 when I was 19. I had just arrived in Bangkok after a long flight full of turbulence and was planning on catching a train straight to Chiang Mai. After getting to the Bangkok train station at 11pm, I was told that there were no tickets left for the next train, leaving me stuck by myself, completely clueless in the middle of the night in a foreign place. I made the decision to catch a taxi into Bangkok city, where I spent the next hour walking around the streets with my backpack trying to find a spare bed. At 1am, I found a hostel, where I spent that night in complete awe of what had just happened. Although it was one of the scariest memories I’ve had travelling, it was the moment that I realised just how capable I am of achieving things on my own, and that feeling is something that cannot be beaten.

Favourite destination: Slovenia captured all of my senses and definitely filled a gap in my heart. From the exquisite scenery to the friendly faces, there wasn’t a time spent in Slovenia where I was looking for more or was unsatisfied with my decisions. I also loved that there was a lack of tourists, especially when compared to the surrounding Mediterranean countries.

Travel Instagram - aga_amatteroftaste

Followers: 5k

Favourite travel memory: Being invited by Sri Lankan fishermen (we were on a beach walk & it was very spontaneous) to help them pull a giant fish net from the ocean. It’s a tremendously hard job that lasts about an hour and takes a village (literally!). Learning that they do it 3 times a day was very humbling.

Favourite destination: Hands down Japan – I love everything about it, from the people and food to the culture, rural areas and big cities.

20. christianlongnecker

Travel Instagram - christianlongnecker

Christian’s shots are seriously epic – adventurous, breathtaking and picturesque all at once.

Followers: 15.9k

Favourite travel memory: Went on a 18 day road trip going from NY to La. Best memory of that trip was the unreal and surreal feeling bombing this hill at monument valley on my Penny skateboard during one of the most beautiful sunsets I’ve ever seen. It was me and three other people and we luckily had the entire place to ourselves.

Favourite destination: All time top favourite is Kauai Hawaii – one of the prettiest landscapes I’ve ever seen, in my opinion better than Bali, Aus, Europe, and North America. Absolutely stunning on the NaPali Coast!

21. alongdustyroads

Favourite travel memory: We travelled Latin America for two years and, from that trip alone, we have travel memories to last a lifetime! The fun part is trying to create a new favourite memory on all the adventures which are yet to happen.

Favourite destination: Mexico vs. Colombia. If food is to be the tie-breaker, then Mexico wins.

22. wewanderasia

Travel Instagram - wewanderasia

Hugo & Noemie, from Canada and the Netherlands, showcase perfect pics that reflect the true beauty in this world, using different angles and objects to really tell a story.

Favourite travel memory: We haven’t got one certain favourite travel memory as we’ve seen so many amazing things, for us the feeling of being together on a scooter somewhere on the edge of the world is truly our favourite memory – again and again – as it makes us feel more free than anything else in this world

Favourite travel destination: Sri Lanka

Favourite travel memory: In August 2015, I quit a career in marketing, sold everything I owned, and left Texas on a one way flight to Spain. One month later, I was volunteering at a vineyard in Tuscany, staying in a villa, eating real Italian food and drinking Italian wine from the vineyard. The experience of working with my hands and stepping into a new role, if only for 2 weeks was an incredible and life changing experience.

Favourite destination: Picking a favourite destination is impossible, but I loved the 7 months I spent in New Zealand bungy jumping, helihiking, swimming with dolphins and enjoying the gorgeous scenery!

27. twins_that_travel

British twins Claire and Laura showcase the cosiest of pics as well as stunning countryside – it’ll make you feel like you don’t need to travel halfway across the world to see beautiful destinations.

Followers: 56.8k

Favourite travel memory: Searching for fairies on the Isle of Skye amongst their pink and purple waterfalls.

Favourite destination: Although we’re identical twins, our tastes are very different when it comes to travel. Laura’s favourite countries are Sweden and Norway for their landscapes, mountains and cosy evenings. Claire’s favourite countries are Spain and Italy for their bustling cities, nightlight and balmy evenings.

28. globetrottergirls

Travel Instagram - globetrottergirls

Dani’s fascinating, gritty shots aren’t all picture postcard perfect, but that’s what makes them so good – she gives a real insight into the culture of each place she visits.

Followers: 20.8k

My favourite travel memory: My favourite travel memory? It’s hard to pick only one after 7.5 years of full-time travel but one trip that stands out is my trip to Cuba earlier this year. The country is fascinating, some of the towns feel like they’re stuck in a time warp, and while it was initially frustrating not to have internet access because of how limited it is by the government, in the end I embraced the involuntary digital detox, because it allowed me to be more present during the trip, to take it all in, instead of wasting time on Facebook or trying to get the perfect Instagram shot. What I loved about Cuba was how friendly the people were, how colourful the towns were, how life takes place in the streets instead of behind closed doors and windows, and the simplicity of life there. The beaches were divine and the scenery was spectacular – I highly recommend visiting Cuba.

Favourite destination: I always say that I have several favourite destinations – which include Italy, Guatemala and Cambodia – but the one country I keep going back to is Mexico, so I guess that’s my No 1 destination! I love the pristine beaches on the Caribbean coast, the Spanish-colonial towns, the diverse landscapes which range from desert in the north to jungles in the south, with plenty of mountains and volcanoes in between, I love the people and the food, of course! I don’t think I’ll ever tire of visiting Mexico and finding new gems there. As for cities, my absolute favourite city in the world is New York City.

These days, Instagram is the go-to destination for travel inspiration. There's an endless amount of travel accounts that'll make you want to jump on the next flight. These accounts will leave you with a serious case of wanderlust, but you're not complaining. Instagram is a great resource to discover new destinations and even learn what to wear on your long-haul flight. It's an exciting platform to consume travel content, but what happens when you want to be a creator? Here are some of the best tips to starting a successful travel Instagram from someone who has been there, done that.

I started my travel Instagram page almost five years ago, and I've loved every minute. I've grown a community of nearly 35,000 followers, and I couldn't be prouder. I feel lucky to be able to share my experiences around the world with people who are just as obsessed with travel as I am. I've dedicated a lot of time and effort into creating travel content that will inspire people to take action beyond double tapping a photo.

As a result, I've been able to turn Instagram friends into real-life friends and collaborate with a variety of well-known brands. I've learned so much along the way, and I have some tips for anyone who wants to start a travel Instagram in 2019.

Gaining travel experience is the most important step to starting a successful travel Instagram. I spent several years saving up to make travel a reality in my life — traveling on a budget, being a digital nomad, and planning my own trips. Now, I have the knowledge and expertise to provide information and inspiration in each area.

Instead of focusing on creating content, I lived in the moment and traveled authentically. These experiences left me with plenty of unique stories to tell and a lot of advice to share.

You may be worried that you don't have the time or budget to travel frequently, but that isn't necessary. You can take advantage of weekends, use the time off that you do have to plan trips, and can even plan staycations. Find unique ways to showcase restaurants, sights, and activities in your hometown or a nearby destination.

Do you want to share your spontaneous adventures with your followers, or would you rather showcase your fashion on-the-go? There are so many travel-related topics that you can discuss and it helps to find a niche. For example, I spent two years traveling solo, so I share tips that empower women to adventure alone.

Finding a niche will help you establish your voice. If you can establish yourself as an expert in a few areas, then your audience will know what to expect. They will come to trust you to provide more information and inspiration. When they need inspiration about how to plan their first solo trip or what to wear to their beach vacation, they'll know exactly where to look.

Instagram is a visual platform, first and foremost. You don't necessarily need to be a professional, but it certainly helps to have eye-catching photos and a cohesive feed.

Scroll through your favorite Instagram pages to gain photo inspiration. You can watch YouTube videos to learn about photography basics such as the rule of thirds and golden hour. You can quickly edit your photos with cool apps like VSCO and the Lightroom mobile app .

If you truly enjoy taking travel photos, then it may be helpful to invest in quality camera gear to up your game. It will take a significant amount of time to learn photography basics, but it will be worth the effort when you create your very own dreamy Insta feed .

Creating a successful travel Instagram isn't as simple as posting cool photos. People need to be able to discover you in order to follow along.

You can implement relevant hashtags and use location tagging so that people can find your feed. When you use hashtags like #wearetravelgirls and #passionpassport, there's a chance that your photos will be asked to be reposted to large travel accounts for more exposure. You can also create a community by showing love to other likeminded travelers, and making an effort to engage with the people who are already following you.

Use other social media sites and blogs to direct people to your Instagram page, so that they can follow along with your journey. Craft an Instagram bio that captures your personality and tells people what they can expect when they follow your page.

So, why do you want to create a travel Instagram? It's important to know the purpose behind the feed.

Do you want to inspire others with your scenic photography? Do you want to encourage others to plan their own trips? Do you want to connect with likeminded people? Having a "why" will help you establish a vision, spread your wings, and fly.

I've had my Instagram for five years. I'm reminded of my "why" every time I receive a message from someone who says that I inspired them to book their first solo trip.

A travel Instagram can bring so much more creativity and community into your life, so what are you waiting for?

How to Choose A Cool Travel Blog Instagram Name: 3 Steps

Choosing a creative Instagram page name can be a big decision, so it’s important to consider a few things before coming to that conclusion.

Step 1: Choose a name that is easy to remember

Your Instagram handle should be easy to remember, easy to spell, and look clean.

  • Avoid using any symbols or characters in your Instagram username.
  • Try not to pick something too limiting. If you diversify your product or brand down the road, you don’t want to be in the position where you have to change your travel blog Instagram handle.
  • Your username should be catchy, unique, and most importantly simple.
  • Keep your Instagram username short and sweet!

Step 2: Keep your Instagram account name relevant to your business or brand

When creating your Instagram name, try building it around your content strategy and your target audience.

If your exact business name is available for your Instagram username, you should immediately secure that handle. This makes it easier than ever for your customers to find you.

If your business name is not available, try to pick something around the product you are selling or the image you are looking to portray.

Step 3: Make sure your Instagram username is memorable

There are over one billion Instagram users , which also makes it harder to find a good and available username.

There are a few different ways to find a good username that is both available, memorable, and easily recognizable:

  • If your exact business name is taken, be sure to put your business name in the first and the last name when setting up your profile. This will ensure that customers can still easily search and find you.
  • Try using a play on words to create an iconic Instagram username.
  • Start your username with well-known phrases such as “the”, “this is”, “we are”

Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos posing together

Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos are taking fans inside their luxurious getaway to Tangier, Morocco.

The “Live with Kelly and Mark” stars, both 53, took to social media over the weekend to share pics from their relaxing vacation and luxurious accommodations at the Villa Mabrouka .

“Scenes from a magical weekend,” Ripa wrote via her Instagram Stories, sharing a stunning view of the ocean, flowers and palm trees.

Ripa also included plenty of pics from the luxury hotel they stayed at, which starts at $530 per night . One of the snaps showcased the entryway with its black-and-white checkered floors and a gorgeous stained glass chandelier hanging from the grand white ceiling.

The longtime television personality was even able to sneak in a mirror selfie in the entryway that showed her smiling while wearing in a casual athleisure outfit.

Of course, Ripa’s posts also included plenty of pictures of her and her husband of 28 years enjoying their escape from reality.

When the duo weren’t staying at the hotel, they ventured to the Tangier American Legation –– America’s “oldest diplomatic property” and museum.

Consuelos appeared to also be taking photos while walking around the garden and taking in the stunning views.

After exploring during the day, the couple got all dolled up to attend a party at the hotel’s terrace restaurant, L’Orangerie.

Ripa wore an ivory blazer over a white dress, while Consuelos opted for a long white T-shirt under a tan blazer and tan pants.

The long white dining table at the bash seemed to be set for around 50 guests and had small table lamps and vases with white flowers running down the center.

The Villa Mabrouka opened its doors last spring and has just 12 rooms in the entire property, which once belonged to famed fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent.

The hotel includes views of the Mediterranean Sea, two crystalline swimming pools, three restaurants and access to garden pavilions where you are “transported immediately into the feeling of paradise,” according to their website.

Ripa made it back in time for Monday’s live taping of “Live with Kelly and Mark.” However, Andy Cohen filled in for Consuelos, who hopped on a different flight to visit Italian soccer team Campobasso 1919 in Molise, Italy.

The co-hosts are no strangers to sharing social media posts from their extravagant vacations over the years. In September, the “All My Children” alums took their three children –– Michael, 26, Lola, 22, and Joaquin, 21 –– to a tropical destination to celebrate the end of summer.

Key statistics

  • The monthly CPI indicator rose 3.5% in the 12 months to March.
  • The most significant price rises were Housing (+5.2%), Food and non-alcoholic beverages (+3.5%), Transport (+4.5%) and Alcohol and tobacco (+6.1%).

What's new this month

Design of a complete monthly cpi.

At the end of 2023, the ABS undertook a public consultation on the proposed complete monthly CPI publication design. The public consultation sought formal submissions on this proposed design covering key areas such as release timing, data requirements, publication specifics, and methodologies. A summary of submissions and the complete monthly CPI design are available on the ‘ We asked, You said, We did ’ page of the Consultation Hub.

Private rent inflation: capital cities vs regions

The ABS has published an article called Private rent inflation: capital cities vs regions . This article updates some of the information about the private Australian rental market previously published in April 2023 in the New insights into the rental market information paper.

Main features

** = Volatile items are Fruit and vegetables and Automotive fuel

Monthly overview

The monthly CPI indicator rose 3.5% in the 12 months to March, following a 3.4% rise in the 12 months to February.

The annual movement for the monthly CPI indicator excluding volatile items and holiday travel was 4.1% in March, up from the rise of 3.9% in February. This series excludes Fruit and vegetables, Automotive fuel, and Holiday travel and accommodation.

Annual trimmed mean inflation was 4.0% in March, up slightly from 3.9% in February.

New dwellings and Rents

New dwelling prices rose 5.1% in the 12 months to March. The increase in New dwelling prices reflects builders continuing to pass on higher costs for labour and materials. The rate of price growth has remained around 5% annually over recent periods, down from the highs of over 20% recorded during 2022.

Rental prices increased 7.7% in the 12 months to March, which continues to reflect strong demand for rental properties and tight rental markets.

In monthly terms, rental prices rose 0.6% in March. Commonwealth Rent Assistance (CRA) increased from 20 March 2024 due to the usual biannual indexation. An increase in CRA reduces the out-of-pocket rental cost for CRA recipients. The monthly result includes a partial impact of this CRA change. Excluding the CRA increase, Rents would have risen by 0.7% over the month. The remaining impact of the CRA increase will be reflected in April.

Electricity and Gas

Electricity prices rose 5.2% in the 12 months to March, up from a rise of 0.3% to February. The rise was driven by the unwinding of Energy Bill Relief Fund rebates which have moderated the increase in electricity bills for households following annual price reviews in July 2023.

Gas prices fell 2.9% in the 12 months to March, the third consecutive month of annual deflation and down from the peak of 27.2% to May 2023.

In monthly terms, Electricity prices rose 4.8%. The rise was driven by households in Perth using up the second instalment of the Energy Bill Relief Fund rebates.

Energy Bill Relief Fund rebates introduced from July 2023 have moderated the increase in electricity bills for households across Australia.

Excluding the Energy Bill Relief Fund rebates, Electricity prices would have increased 14.8% in the 12 months to March 2024.

The following graph shows the Electricity series including and excluding government electricity rebates.

Food and non-alcoholic beverages

Food and non-alcoholic beverage prices rose 3.5% in the 12 months to March, down slightly from a rise of 3.6% to February. The main contributors were Meals out and takeaway foods (+5.4%), Bread and cereal products (+7.3%) and Food products n.e.c. (+4.0%). Meat and seafood (-0.9%) and Fruit and vegetable (-1.2%) prices fell compared to 12 months ago.

Automotive fuel

Automotive fuel prices rose 8.1% in the 12 months to March, up from a rise of 4.1% to February. The rise was driven by higher wholesale fuel prices.

In monthly terms, Automotive fuel prices rose 1.5% in March, following a rise of 5.1% in February.

Holiday travel and accommodation

Holiday travel and accommodation prices fell 3.9% in the 12 months to March, following a fall of 1.3% to February.

In monthly terms, Holiday travel and accommodation prices fell 1.2% in March, as prices for airfares and accommodation continued to ease due to lower demand following the end of the school holiday period. Increased demand for domestic accommodation for the Easter break partially offset the fall.

About the monthly CPI indicator

What is the monthly cpi indicator.

The monthly Consumer Price Index (CPI) indicator was developed to provide inflation data at a higher frequency for use by governments, economists and the wider community. The quarterly CPI remains the principal measure of household inflation.

Monthly CPI Indicator coverage

The monthly CPI indicator is derived using available data from the quarterly CPI. The ABS collects prices for the CPI in a range of frequencies including monthly, quarterly, and annual. The frequency of price collection is determined by how often prices change. Where price change occurs frequently, such as for food and petrol, monthly price data is collected. Where price change is less frequent, such as for restaurant meals and hairdressers, price data is available quarterly. In some cases, prices are collected once per year where it is known prices only change annually. This is the case for some education fees, property rates and private health insurance.

For this reason, the composition of the monthly CPI basket varies across the three months of the quarter, details of the monthly coverage composition are detailed in Table 1 below.

Introducing monthly indicators of underlying inflation

The December 2022 release of the monthly CPI indicator stated

"The release of the monthly CPI indicator includes a Trimmed mean series which was intended to provide additional analytical insights into inflation on a monthly basis. The ABS has identified that the Trimmed mean series is not, however, providing a reliable indicator for the principal measure of trimmed mean inflation published in the quarterly CPI publication. The ABS will suspend the publication of the monthly Trimmed mean series while we investigate."

Since this decision the ABS has investigated the monthly trimmed mean measure and assessed alternative measures of underlying inflation.

Investigation of monthly Trimmed mean

The investigation found there was a downward bias in the monthly Trimmed mean when compared to the quarterly Trimmed mean, which is considered the principal measure of underlying inflation. The bias was evident during a period of rising inflation caused by the use of carry forward imputation for some monthly data. Details on the carry forward imputation approach are provided in Introducing a monthly CPI indicator . Carry forward imputation is not used in the quarterly CPI and therefore does not affect the quarterly Trimmed mean.

Alternative measures of underlying inflation

The ABS assessed variations of established measures of underlying inflation. Two alternatives were found to be a reasonable indicator of annual movements of the quarterly Trimmed mean:

  • Annual trimmed mean. This measure uses a similar method to the quarterly trimmed mean. The key difference is rather than use the quarterly movements in the trimming process, the annual movements are used. In this case, each month the annual movements of the 87 CPI series are ranked from lowest to highest. The top and bottom 15% of annual movements are removed, with the average is taken from the middle 70% of annual movements. For more details on the Trimmed mean method see Underlying Inflation Measures: Explaining the Trimmed Mean .
  • CPI excluding volatile items and holiday travel. CPI exclusion based measures are used by many countries to provide different insights into CPI inflation by removing the effects of certain items. Typically, the price change for these items tend to be volatile and often not reflective of the underlying inflationary trends. This new measure builds on the existing 'CPI excluding volatile items' series and also excludes holiday travel. Volatile items are fruit, vegetables and automotive fuel.

For holiday travel, it has been shown that events such as Christmas and Easter, as well as school holidays, have a significant impact on airfare and accommodation prices. This sees monthly movements for holiday travel as quite volatile. By calculating a series that excludes the monthly movements of holiday travel and the other volatile items, the monthly movements at the aggregate CPI level provide a reasonable insight of underlying inflation.

Measuring Rents in the CPI

New data source

  • As outlined in the ABS’ information paper Introducing a monthly CPI indicator for Australia , from July 2022 the ABS has incorporated a new data source to measure the Rents series in the monthly CPI indicator and the quarterly CPI.
  • The Rents series prior to July 2022 was measured on a quarterly basis using a survey of approximately 4,000 rental properties collected directly from real estate agents.
  • The new dataset obtained by the ABS is updated monthly and includes approximately 480,000 rental properties that are used to produce the CPI Rents series across all capital cities.

What the CPI Rents series measures

  • The CPI measures the prices being paid by households for the goods and services that they consume during a particular measurement period (e.g. month or quarter).  In the case of rents, this means that the CPI measures the current ‘price’ being paid by all types of households that rent including new and existing renters who are renting privately or from the government.
  • Measures of rental inflation that are based on newly advertised rental properties only measure changes in the asking or advertised price of rental properties for new tenancies. At any given time, newly advertised tenancies represent a relatively small proportion of properties being rented in Australia. The Rents series used for the CPI measures actual rents paid rather than advertised prices.
  • Advertised rents tend to reflect the dynamic end of the rental market where the price change for new tenancies can be more volatile than that being experienced by renters with existing tenancy agreements.
  • Price changes observed in advertised rents series are expected to eventually flow through to the CPI Rents series. However, the small share of rental properties leased to new tenants each quarter means that it takes some time for changes in advertised rents to impact price change observed in the CPI Rents series.
  • A useful analogy is to think about a bathtub of water. The water in the tub represents all rents being paid by households, while the water entering the tub from the tap represents new rental agreements. The CPI series is measuring the overall temperature of the bathtub whereas an advertised rents series measures the temperature of the water flowing into the tub. It will take some time for the flow of water to change the overall temperature of the water in the bathtub.

Using price indexes

Price indexes published by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) provide summary measures of the movements in various categories of prices over time. They are published primarily for use in Government economic analysis.

Consistent with existing policy, the ABS does not comment on the use (or otherwise) of the price indexes we publish. However, it should be noted that the monthly CPI indicator may be routinely subject to revision, in contrast to the quarterly CPI which is only revised in exceptional circumstances.

Use of Price Indexes in Contracts  sets out a range of issues that should be taken into account by parties considering including an Indexation Clause in a contract using an ABS published price index.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) specific to the monthly CPI indicator can be found in the Information paper:  Introducing a monthly CPI indicator for Australia FAQs

In addition, the Frequently Asked Questions page has answers to a number of common questions to do with price indexes and the quarterly Consumer Price Index in particular.

Methodology

The monthly CPI indicator is a general measure of price change for goods and services purchased by Australian households.

Monthly data is published at the national level, derived as a weighted average of the eight capital cities.

Prices are collected for a range of goods and services (the CPI basket) from a variety of retailers across the eight capital cities.

Collection method

Prices are collected in a range of frequencies including monthly, quarterly, and annually using:

  • web-scraping
  • online and telephone collections from retailers
  • administrative data, including supermarket scanner data.

Concepts, sources and methods

Information about the data sources and methods used to compile the CPI is contained in the  Consumer Price Index: Concepts, Sources and Methods .

History of changes

  • Annual update of CPI weights January 2024.
  • Partial update of CPI weights July 2023.
  • Monthly Gas series included June 2023.
