Product Q&A

How is the Travel Safety Carrier secured for safety?

All carriers are secured in 2 areas: by a strap that wraps around the headrest and on the bottom by any seat belt.

What are the door dimensions for the Travel Safety Carrier?

Here are the door dimensions for all 3 sizes:

  • Side doors - 6.5" wide, 10" high
  • Front door - 12" wide, 9" high

It’s easiest to install this item in the vehicle prior to placing your pet inside. If you’re looking for something to transport your pet between the house and the car, we recommend the Mod Capsule .

Do you sell replacement pads for this carrier?

Unfortunately, we do not sell replacement pads for the Travel Safety Carrier. However, the pad can be washed on the gentle cycle with cold water and then line dried.

5 Best Dog Car Barriers for Safe Travel

What Are Dog Car Barriers?

A car barrier for dogs is among those items that we don’t usually realize we’re going to need as we’re getting a dog, only to later find out them to be much more than just a luxury item. In fact, dog car barriers are an essential item for any dog owner who has to frequently drive together with a dog, be it to the vet, to work, to the park, or anywhere else.

There are other pet supplies that can serve a similar function as a car barrier, such as dog travel crates and carriers, seat belts, car harnesses , and booster seats , but they're not exactly the same thing. In this article, we’ll focus on car barriers specifically, how they differ, and how and when you may need them instead of other alternatives. We’ll go over the main characteristics of a good dog car barrier and how to choose and use one. We’ll wrap things up with our list of the five best dog car barriers on the market right now.

Dog car barriers are exactly what their name implies – a barrier designed to be placed between the front and back seats of a car or behind the back seats in order to restrict the movement of dogs and other pets within the vehicle.

This is what a car barrier for dogs looks like:

This is what a car barrier for dogs looks like

These barriers can be made out of different materials: metal, plastic, cloth net or a combination of two or all three. Depending on its exact materials and design, a dog car barrier can be easier or harder to install. It can also fit in a wider array of vehicle types or in a more specific and narrower vehicle type depending again on its design and materials.

Metal dog car barriers are typically sturdier, more durable and offer more security. Net dog car barriers are easier to install, fit in more vehicle types, and are softer for the dog in the case of an impact. Which one is better for your situation depends on many factors, which we'll talk about below.

Currently, the best dog car barriers to choose from are these five:

Why You Need a Car Barrier for Dogs

Let's consider some data first. American Automobile Association says that over 80% of dog owners do not restrain their pets when traveling in a car and only about 20% of them actually use restraints ( source ). As a result, about 60% of them are driving while distracted by their pets in a variety of ways – petting, letting the dog sit on their lap, feeding, etc.

Generally, if you're already utilizing any other dog car safety items (booster seats, crates, carriers, seat belts, or harnesses), then it's possible you may not need a car barrier. However, there are times when you might want to use a combination of the two. Dog car barriers serve two general purposes .

Pet owners are often tempted to interact with their dogs during a long car ride, stroking their ears and petting or simply trying to calm them down. However, the reality is that such behavior is extremely dangerous and brings too much risk to be worth it.

  • Interacting with a dog can distract us, which can be just as dangerous – if not more – than chatting on a phone while driving. Data shows that distracted driving is one of the major causes of vehicle crashes in the United States.
  • Should a dog fall into a panic for whatever reason during a ride it can obstruct our movements and driving in a myriad of ways. We all think we know our canine pals well enough but you never really know if something isn’t going to scare off your pooch and cause an accident.
  • Rowdy and misbehaving dogs should be restricted at all times anyway. If they are big, they can be dangerous by themselves, and if they are small, they can easily get in the way of the pedals, the wheel, the gear, and so on.

The purpose of car barriers for dogs

For the very same reason that we wear seat belts, dogs need at least some protection and restraint as well. In the event of a crash, a dog can be thrown towards the front window with massive force just as easily as a human. This, in turn, can be deadly for both the dog, for you, and for the rest of the passengers in the car.

Small dogs may not be dangerous projectiles to their owners, but their own lives will be a much more significant risk due to their small size. Big dogs are more likely to survive car crashes, but they can also become lethal projectiles if they get in the air in the event of a crash and are thrown at the people in the vehicle. A dog barrier protects you from such an event and can also soften the blow for the dog.

Regardless of what you need it for, a dog barrier for cars should always fit well into the space it's intended for, should be well-attached to the vehicle's fixtures, and should be sturdy enough to withstand both the constant pressure from a potentially hyperactive dog, as well as the pressure from its body in the case of an accident. To ensure this, you'll need to pay close attention to the barrier's measurements, design, and materials.

In most cases, a car barrier should protect you from the dog entirely – if the pooch is small, the barrier should cover all small spaces between the seats and the car so that the dog can’t get through. For bigger dogs, this isn’t that much of a concern as they can’t fit through small openings, although they can still attempt to lick, bite or scratch you through them and thereby distract you from driving.

How to use these barriers effectively

Depending on the size of your dog, a car dog barrier should offer sufficient protection from any potentially distracting interaction. Some car barriers intentionally leave spaces large enough for a human hand so that you can reach through if you want. Others have pockets for treats and food in them, but these are all mostly luxury items. Ideally, you should NOT turn to, touch, play with, or interact with a dog while driving – leave this for when you stop the car.

In the above table and below reviews, we've listed the five best car barriers for dogs that are likely to fit most pet owners' needs and their vehicles in the United States. When you're shopping for this item, the key to choosing the right car barrier for dogs that fits your vehicle properly is determined by what type of barrier you want .

Here are the main considerations to keep in mind:

• Placement . Do you need a barrier between the front and back seats or a barrier behind the back seats? These two types of vehicle pet barriers are quite different in design, mainly because the latter tends to cover only the upper part of your vehicle’s width. If you place this type of vehicle barrier between the front and back seats, it will leave plenty of space beneath it for dogs to pass through, which isn't good.

• Spaces to cover . Do you need a full-width barrier or just a barrier to cover a specific small space between the seats? The latter variants tend to leave spaces on the sides of the car seats, which could be a problem for smaller dogs that can fit through there. If your pooch is big enough, however, it’s possible that these spaces don’t need a barrier anyway.

• Sturdiness . Do you need a metal or a strong plastic barrier to stop rowdy dogs, as well as to offer extra protection in case of crashes? Or do you instead want a softer net barrier to keep your pets simply restricted and to offer medium protection in case of an accident? Keep in mind that while the standard net barrier isn’t as strong as a full-metal one, it’s also softer and – as long as it holds during an accident – it will hurt your dog much less.

• Size . What size area in your vehicle do you want to cover, and what size dog car barrier do you need? One of the most common problems for most customers is buying a car barrier that doesn’t fit their vehicle. Whenever you choose a pet barrier , look into its precise dimensions as well as the locations of its straps or hooks. After that, measure the interior of your vehicle and make sure that the barrier will fit perfectly inside and will be easy to attach to its fixtures.

The 5 Best Dog Car Barriers

To better illustrate how to shop for a good vehicle barrier for pets, here are the five best car barriers for dogs that our editorial team liked and how we've picked and ranked them. You can either pick one of these items or use these reviews as a dog car barrier buying guide when you're shopping by yourself.

The Bushwhacker dog barrier is designed for CUV and mid-sized SUV vehicles. It has dimensions of 47” width and 21” height. Designed to almost fully divide the back seat area of the car from the front, this net mesh pet screen is scratch and tear resistant for extra security and longevity. It’s held in place by a half inch lightweight metal tubing that both keeps it steady and prevents dogs from squeezing under, over or around the barrier.

With its sturdy metal frame design, generally easy setup process, durability, and security, this Bushwhacker barrier is likely to be the most fitting option for the majority of pet owners and their vehicles who are looking for a “serious” barrier.

  • The sturdy design and metal frame make this a very secure option.
  • The net mesh screen is very durable and scratch-resistant.
  • The Bushwhacker dog barrier is very easy to install.
  • Because of its metal frame, the Bushwhacker barrier will fit well only in certain vehicles.

For a soft net barrier that’s a bit more budget-friendly as well as more universal in its design, the SCENEREAL pet vehicle barrier has dimensions of 33.86” height and 32.68” width. It doesn’t have a sturdy outside frame and instead can be attached to your vehicle directly with its adjustable straps on the top and bottom of the net. This allows it to easily fit into most cars, trucks, SUVs, etc.

Made out of a durable elastic mesh and Oxford cloth, this net barrier has a relatively durable design without obstructing your rear view. Lightweight and easy to install, a net dog barrier like this one gives some additional security for an affordable price and without costing you any convenience.

  • The adjustable straps allow it to fit in most vehicles.
  • The durable net mesh offers a lot of protection without sacrificing convenience or obstructing your field of view.
  • It’s lightweight and easy to install.
  • The lack of a secure frame leaves open spaces on the sides of the seats and over the net. This can allow an extra-rowdy dog to cause some troubles.

For something minimalistic and less obstructive, this Eackrola dog barrier net is designed to cover only the space between the two front seats of the vehicle. With dimensions of 12.6” height and 11” width, it perfectly fits most cars, SUVs, trucks, jeeps, and other vehicles. It attaches easily with the 4 hooks on its corners and is fairly adjustable. It will not obstruct your field of view, seatbelts, or movements in any way and is designed to simply keep pets and kids from getting directly between the two front seats and disturbing you while driving.

Dog Barrier Safety Pet Barrier Car Net Stretchy...

It's important to note that this net barrier will not do anything to prevent pets from jumping over or sneaking through the outside of the car seats, nor will it protect them from a severe crash – it’s not designed for that. It does work perfectly as a simple low barrier, but if you're looking for protection, this isn't a recommended option.

  • Very easy to install and universally fitting.
  • Doesn’t obstruct your driving in any way.
  • Will keep kids and pets from reaching between the two front seats.
  • This is not a full-size barrier and doesn’t offer complete protection against rowdy dogs or crashes. It’s designed to only lightly obstruct pets and kids from reaching between the seats.

Back to something larger, this NAC&ZAC dog barrier for car has a height of 37” and a width of 46”. It will cover almost the entire width of most SUVs and vehicles. It also has multiple adjustable straps which allow it to easily fit in different types of vehicles. There are also extra strips at the central bottom part of the net to offer additional protection for the console area of the car.

Made out of durable mesh, this net is somewhere between a metal/plastic barrier and regular soft net barrier. It will offer you durable and convenient protection at a budget price. It's very easy to install and remove so that you can do this on a regular basis.

  • Easy to install and adjustable to fit different vehicle types.
  • Offers extra protection at the console area of the car.
  • Offers a good deal of protection with its durable net mesh.
  • The lack of an outside metal frame makes it less sturdy.
  • Rowdy dogs might be able to get through the seats outside.

For a full-metal option, this Jumbl Pet dog barrier can offer your SUV, jeep, or car complete protection against rowdy dogs or for crashes. The wide wire mesh makes sure that your rearview won’t be obstructed while still being more than secure enough to keep your pet where you need him or her to be. With a height of the main body of 16.5” and width of 35.5” plus dimensions of the side panels of 10.5” height and 12” width, this barrier will only cover the upper part of your vehicle’s width. This means that you’ll need a different type of obstruction below the barrier.

This is by far one of the most durable car barriers for dogs available, but it's not very flexible and is likely to leave spaces. It will work with large dogs but is unlikely to be good at keeping small dogs out of your front seats or back seats. If that's not an issue, then this is a safe choice for anyone looking for a durable wire mesh and metal design.

  • The side panels can be adjusted in relation to the main one. This allows the barrier to fit in most cars, SUVs, and other vehicles.
  • The strong wire mesh will give you complete security when dealing with even the wildest dogs.
  • Despite its full-metal design, the barrier is very easy to install.
  • This barrier will only cover the upper part of a vehicle’s width. This makes it great for restricting dogs behind the back seats, but you will need an additional net if you want to keep your dog on the back seat and restrict him or her from reaching the front.

Dog car barriers are an essential tool in the arsenal of any dog owners that frequently travel with their canine companions in their cars and are great at keeping dogs away from the front seats, as well as giving an extra level of protection for both the dogs and other passengers in case of a crash. That said, they are not a replacement for other dog car restraints, such as seat belts or harnesses, and it's best to utilize both.

Car barriers for dogs serve two main functions: 1) they keep dogs from distracting you while driving and getting in the way, and 2) they offer both us and our dogs extra protection in the case of an accident. If neither of these is a problem for you, then you likely do not need a vehicle barrier for your pets.

Buying a pet barrier depends on several factors, and primarily on the type of vehicle and the type of dog(s) you have. As both vehicles and dogs can vary a lot in size, however, finding a good dog car barrier that fits your car can be a challenge sometimes. Durability, security, convenience, and price are other factors to consider but once you find the right barrier for your vehicle it’s more than worth it.

Why Throwing Sticks for Your Dog Could Be Dangerous

Best Dog Car Barriers

Angela Vuckovic

Dog car barriers keep curious pets safely away from the front of the car and eliminate cute but dangerous distractions while you drive. This nifty car accessory is a must for proper pet travel safety – read on to learn more about them and how to choose the right one for your needs!

For many pet owners, traveling without their pets is not an option. And why would it be? With more and more pet-friendly places we get to share with our four-legged besties, there’s a ton of options for adventures and relaxation with our pets right by our side. Naturally, this also means that you have to think about your pet’s safety as well as the safety of others. There are many risks that come with pet travel, especially when you’re driving. Whether it’s a long road trip or a short vacation, or just driving to visit the vet’s office, when your dog is with you in the car, you will have to take necessary safety precautions. Not only that you have to think about protecting your pooch in case of an accident, but you also have to prevent your pet from causing a ruckus inside the car and potentially causing an accident himself, and one of the essential tools for this is a dog car barrier.

Sometimes, pet owners prefer using a travel crate, car booster seat or car harnesses for dogs to safely restrain their pets while they drive but these travel accessories are not the most convenient solution for every dog. Your pet might be anxious in a crate (or it can’t fit in your car), and tethering your pooch could be insufficient to keep them from being mischievous while you drive. That’s where car barriers for pets come in handy. Dog car barriers are meant to separate the front part of the car from the back (where the pooch is). This prevents your pet from climbing over to the front of the car or distracting you while you drive. At the same time, a dog car barrier is designed so it doesn’t obstruct your view of the back – essential for driving safety. In addition to preventing your pet from accessing the front of the car and possibly cause an accident, a car barrier can provide some protection in case you are in one, too. If your pet is not tethered in the moment of impact, a car barrier would prevent them from being propelled forward or through the windshield.

Naturally, there are differences between types of dog car barriers – from the materials used to the design, not every model will suit your car and your pet. To help you find the right match in no time, we’ve rounded up the best dog car barriers on the market – you can’t go wrong with any on our list. Read on to learn how to make car drives much safer for your pooch and yourself!

1. Bushwhacker Deluxe Dog Barrier

travel safety pet barrier

This sturdy and tough dog car barrier combines the best of both worlds to provide optimal safety. The frame of the barrier is made from lightweight aluminum tubes that help the barrier retain its shape at all times (regardless of your pet’s efforts to shift it). The mesh fabric of the screen is scratch-resistant and tear-resistant – it gives good visibility, optimal airflow, but prevents your pet from accessing the front of the car. The Bushwhacker Deluxe Dog Barrier is 50 inches wide tapering to 42 inches at the top, which fits most cars and small SUVs.

2. Kurgo Backseat Bridge

travel safety pet barrier

One challenge that many dog owners face when trying to get their dogs situated for a long road trip is providing enough space on the back seat for them to comfortably lay down and relax while still buckled in. This is largely due to the gap that exists between the back seat and the front seat. Sure, that area serves as important legroom when it’s a human sitting there, but it’s nothing but a nuisance for our dogs! Not only does the Kurgo Dog Backseat Bridge solve this problem, but it also provides a barrier to keep the pet away from the front seat AND creates valuable luggage space when travelling.

The backseat extender sits on the back seat, creating a ‘bridge’ across the gap that can support up to 100lbs. It can also be folded to allow for sharing of the backseat with another passenger. In the back of the seat divider between the front seats, you will find a cup holder and a pocket for extra storage. Additionally, the space below the extender can also be used for storage. The reversible black and Hampton sand colors will help the bridge to match any vehicle interior.

3. Jumbl Pet Dog Barrier for SUV’s

travel safety pet barrier

Designed to keep your pet safe in the cargo area of the car, this steel wire dog car barrier is a perfect match for SUVs, hatchbacks, and most cars – as it has adjustable side panels. The sides can be lengthened and shortened with a simple turn of the knob and the whole construction attaches to the headrest, so the barrier is not difficult to set up. The design of this car barrier makes it a good choice for pets that would tear a mesh-style barrier and require something sturdier.

4. Solvit Front Seat Net Pet Barrier

travel safety pet barrier

If your pooch is generally well-behaved in a car and you want to have a barrier just in case of unexpected situations, this mesh car barrier is a solid choice. It is made from micro-mesh that’s easy to see through, but also easy to rip if your doggo is naughty. The design covers only the center front part of the car (in between the headrests and seats) so if your dog is keen on putting his head in the front, he can do it from the sides- another word of caution for pawrents with mischievous pets!

5. PetSafe Happy Ride Metal Dog Barrier

travel safety pet barrier

Your pet’s safety during car drives- as well as your own- should be your primary concern and any distractions should be decreased to an absolute minimum. To help prevent a particularly rowdy pet from jumping in front of the car while you drive, you’ll need a barrier that’s reliable, tough, and offers good coverage- and that’s precisely what PetSafe Happy Ride Metal Dog Barrier provides. The tubular design of this dog car barrier makes it lightweight and sturdy at the same time- it will stay in place no matter how much your pooch tries to change that.

This barrier uses clasps to attach to the car and boasts rubberized top and bottom caps that not only make sure that the barrier doesn’t move an inch, but it also ensures that there are no rattling sounds when you hit a bump on the road. Additionally, PetSafe Happy Ride Metal Dog Barrier is manufactured with lightweight rattle-free metal, so not even your pet’s attempts to reach the front of the car will distract you from watching the road. This barrier is adjustable so it will fit most cars and SUVs – it can be used to section off the back seat or cargo area.

6. AUTOWN Car Dog Barrier

travel safety pet barrier

If your pet is not too strong or doesn’t aggressively try to climb in the front seat, but you still want something in between the front and the back, this lightweight net barrier is a good choice. While it won’t deter a big, rowdy pooch determined to ride shotgun, it will do the job for a small or medium-size dog. The net is made from thickened polyester fiber that’s stretchy to boot – so it doubles as a storage space for your pet’s toys or other travel necessities. AUTOWN Car Dog Barrier attaches to the front seats with hooks and it’s a match for most car makes and models.

7. rabbitgoo Dog Car Barrier

travel safety pet barrier

Traveling with your doggo can be a dream- but it can be a nightmare, too. To keep everything under control and to prevent your pup from disturbing you while you drive, you can rely on a sturdy and efficient dog barrier. The rabbitgoo Dog Car Barrier design leaves no margin for error and covers all the bases. Made with steel bars, this wire mesh barrier features an adjustable design that makes fitting a breeze. With one main panel and two smaller, adjustable side panels, you can fit this barrier into any SUV or a passenger car.

One of the many great features of this design is the no-tool attachment style. With the help of strong straps and buckles, the barrier is attached to the car seats and stays in place at all times. Depending on the type of your vehicle, you can opt to leave the two side panels attached or removed. A simple screw knob helps you remove them altogether if you need to. This adjustability is one of the major advantages of this reliable design.

8. Honest Luxury Quilted Dog Car Seat Cover

travel safety pet barrier

Why not get two travel necessities with one purchase? This high-quality quilted waterproof car seat cover will keep your seats spotless and protected and make sure that your pet can’t climb in the front at the same time. The anti-slip cover will envelop the whole back seat and the sides, too, and the front flap restricts access to the front, acting as a barrier. Made from Oxford cloth in four layers, this car seat cover is not just functional but comfortable as well! Due to the design and dimensions, it will fit most cars with bench back seats.

9. Wellbro Dog Car Backseat Barrier

travel safety pet barrier

Not all dogs act like Tasmanian devils as soon as you hit the road- and it’s those moderately curious pooches that this car barrier is meant for. In case your pet isn’t the type to try and jump over the barrier or go crazy clawing at chewing at it, this nylon mesh barricade will do the trick. Wellbro Dog Car Backseat Barrier is made from durable nylon fabric and soft EVA interlayer, with a sturdy net in the center- this will allow your pooch to see what’s happening in the front but prevent them from reaching that area of the vehicle.

The adjustable straps with swivel hooks make this dog car barrier effortless to install and versatile, as well- this barrier fits a range of vehicles, from regular cars to SUVs and trucks. The dimensions of the barrier are 24” by 24” so it is large enough to fit any gap between seats with ease.

10. High Road Dog Car Barrier

travel safety pet barrier

With a budget-friendly price tag, quality materials, and clever design, this car barrier offers great value for money. This car barrier is adjustable and easy to attach but with multiple connecting points, it’s actually sturdy and stays in place regardless of your pet’s antics. The coated mesh screen sits firmly on the cushioned steel frame and allows your pet to see what’s up in the front while keeping them safely in the back. The dimensions of the High Road Dog Car Barrier make it a universal fit.

What are car barriers and how to properly use them

As we’ve mentioned above, dog car barriers are designed to keep your pet from climbing over to the front of the car. The barrier is usually attached to the front seats for stability and made from materials that allow good visibility to ensure road safety. In most cases, the choice is either breathable mesh fabric or plastic or aluminum bars (or mesh) design. Alternatively, the material can also be tough, solid fabric – but only for those barriers that don’t go all the way up and won’t restrict your view of the back. This type of barrier is usually a 2-in-1 car seat cover that can restrict access to the front area to some degree, and it’s meant for tethered dogs. As they can’t jump over to the front, you won’t need as much coverage – a car seat cover that can be attached to the front will somewhat limit their access and can be a good choice.

The setup of dog car barriers is simple as most of them require a few minutes of time and basic skills – usually, all you’ll have to do is loop the attachments around the front seat headrest, and you’ll be all set. In the case of tougher barriers that are made from metal or plastic, the process might be a bit more complex than that but still nothing that requires tools or hassle.

Even though the main goal is for the barrier to be sturdy enough to keep your pet from wiggling his way to you while you drive and it’s important that it can stay in place – but you will have to be realistic. If your dog jumps constantly or scratches at the barrier throughout the trip, it can come apart or shift in place, so if you have a pet that’s not well behaved during car rides, a car harness in combination with a barrier would be a better choice. Also, in case your pet is an aggressive chewer, no mesh fabric can hold him restricted, so opt for materials that are more durable.

What to look for in dog car barriers

Your pet’s safety should always be your primary concern – choose the barrier with care. Not all dog car barriers are made alike, and, unfortunately, not all of them do what they promise, so it’s important to choose those that are durable, convenient, and a good match for your unique needs (car model, pet size, pet behavior, etc.). Here are some important things to consider when buying dog car barriers – to make sure you’ll get the best bang for your buck.

This is one of the first things to consider when buying a dog car barrier – will it fit your vehicle make and model? Luckily, most dog car barriers are a universal fit, but it still pays to check before buying. Choosing a barrier whose dimensions or fastening design don’t suit your car can damage your seats and it will be insecure for you to use it even if you somehow manage to attach it.

There are two main types of dog car barriers, based on the placement. First, the standard car barrier that goes behind the front seats to prevent access from the back seat. The second type are dog car barriers that are meant to be installed behind the back seat of the car to make sure that your pet can’t pass to the cargo space- or climb from it to the inside of the car. The second type is usually meant for SUVs and vans, and the first can be used on all types of cars. Regardless of the placement, though, you should make sure that the barrier you chose really covers all the areas that could allow access to the restricted area in question – especially if you have a small dog.

Let’s face it- not all dogs are well-behaved in the car and will be sitting quietly so the barrier is there just in case of unexpected scenarios. Some doggos are rowdy and curious and will scratch and paw at the barrier, so it’s best to opt for those that are made from materials resistant to wear and tear expected with pet use.

The amount of coverage you need will depend on different factors, but mostly the size of your dog and their behavior. Bigger dogs and those more likely to misbehave need barriers that cover the passage between the front and the back completely or almost completely. In case they are petite or super crafty, be sure to pay attention to the small openings on the bottom or sides where they could exploit the design flaw to wiggle their way through. Of course, for smaller pets and dogs that are not too rowdy, something that goes halfway up (like car seat covers or smaller car barriers) will do just fine.

There are various materials used to make dog car barriers – but you can split them into two categories: soft and hard. Soft dog car barriers are usually made from intertwined ropes or tough mesh fabric which allows visibility and keeps dogs restricted to the back seat. They are easy to install, store and use- and they are budget-friendly. However, if you know your dog is going to test the limits of the barrier once you’re on the road and you don’t plan on tethering them, you might want something a bit more difficult to destroy or shift around. Hence the hard car barriers for pets! They are made from plastic or lightweight metals in form of bars or wire and will stand up well to pawing and mischievous pooch trying to demolish it. Of course, there are some potential downsides – they are not as easy to attach and remove when you please (they are removable and easy to install, the process is just not as effortless as it is with soft barriers).

Dog Who Spent 900 Days in a Shelter Returned 1 Day After Being Adopted

Dog Who Spent 900 Days in a Shelter Returned 1 Day After Being Adopted

The staff at the Valley Animal Center in Fresno, California was joyous when a Labrador retriever pit bull mix named Sora was finally adopted. Sora, who was the shelter’s longest resident, has waited 900 days to be adopted into a loving, furever home.Sadly, less than 24 hours after the adoption, the poor pooch was returned to the shelter. The Valley Animal Center in Fresno, the largest no-kill shelter in California’s Central Valley, welcomed Sora nearly 4 years ago after the pup’s previous owners surrendered the pet. Since then, Sora hasn’t garnered much attention from prospective adopters, which is shocking to shelter staff who know the pooch well. “Sora is a high-energy dog who loves to play and gets super excited anytime she gets to go on walks,” said Sim Kaur from Valley Animal Center to Newsweek. According to Kaur, Sora loves to walk and hike and will make an amazing travel companion to an outdoorsy person. The sweet pooch also loves playing with tennis balls and is always in the mood for a game of fetch. Sora has tested well with children over the age of five and is affectionate and lovable with adults.Despite being overlooked for so many years, this cute pup recently caught the attention of a potential adopter. After a few meetings, the person decided to adopt Sora, giving this pooch the happy ending she deserved. Then, the worst possible thing happened! Just 24 hours later, the new owner called the shelter to say they would be returning the pup. Sora arrived at the shelter heartbroken and looked particularly sad to be back in the same kennel she called home for so many years. This turn of events shocked Kaur, who believed Sora’s adopters should have given her more time to decompress and settle in her new home before deciding to return the pet to the shelter.“Being in a shelter for many years affects the mental health of our adoptables and it is no different for Sora,” she added. “Sora did not get enough time to decompress in her new home and was introduced to new family members too quickly.”Sora’s sad story was posted on TikTok and has received more than 1.6 million views, leaving doggy lovers around the world in tears. Sharing the video of Sora with another pooch, Eros, who was also returned quickly after adoption, the shelter wrote: “Their tails wagging with hope as they were welcomed into their new home. However, after a short period of time, these shelter dogs found themselves back in their kennels. They are still hopeful that somewhere out there is their furever home where they will be cherished as they deserve.”One day is not enough time for a shelter dog to adjust to its new home. Especially, if the dog in question has spent more than 900 days stuck inside a shelter. Unfortunately, staff at animal shelters see this happen often. Some people who adopt shelter dogs simply don’t give them the time they need to adjust to a new home, and all the unfamiliar sights, smells, and people. It comes as no surprise, to most people, that any dog that has spent any time in a shelter, much less 900 days, will need some time to adapt to its new life and recover from the stress they have experienced. Hopefully, the next person who adopts Sora will understand her and give her the time she needs to adjust to her new home. This adorable pooch is still looking for her furever home. If you think Sora will fit right into your family, submit an adoption application here. Join the PetGuide community. Scientists Finally Know Why Cats Love Tuna So Much

Scientists Finally Know Why Cats Love Tuna So Much

No food is more synonymous with cats than tuna. Even the pickiest of cats can’t resist the tuna’s fishy flavor. Finally, scientists have learned why cats love tuna so much. In the study published in the journal Chemical Sense, scientists report that cats, like humans, have receptors needed to detect umami flavor. Along with sweet, sour, bitter, and salty, umami is one of the five basic tastes.Umami seems to be the cats’ favorite flavor. Considering that umami gives food a deep and savory meaty aroma, it’s no surprise that an obligate carnivore like a cat would prefer it over all other flavors. The research team also found that cats’ taste receptors bind to two chemicals found in high concentrations in tuna. These chemicals boost the umami flavor, making cats obsessed with tuna. “This is an important study that will help us better understand the preferences of our familiar pers,” says Yasuka Toda, a molecular biologist at Meiji University. According to Toda, this study could help cat food manufacturers create healthier food and more palatable medication for cats. Previous studies showed that cats have a unique palate. Cats can’t taste sugar, because their sweet receptor gene is dysfunctional. Scientists believe that felines lose the ability to taste sweeteners and carbs because they don’t need these macronutrients to survive. Cats also have fewer bitter flavor receptors than humans. This trait is commonly seen in obligated carnivores. “Since discovering that cats don’t have a functional sweet taste receptor, we did wonder what they would respond to instead,” study lead author Scott McGrane, a sensory science expert at Waltham Petcare Science Institute, told Live Science. Humans and other animals possess two genes - Tas1r1 and Tas1r3 that work together to detect umami flavor. Previous research has shown that cats express the umami-related Tas1r3 gene in their taste buds, but it was unclear whether they possess both genes needed to detect umami flavor. The research team led by McGrane discovered that cats expressed both Tas1r1 and Tas1r3 genes in their taste buds. To learn this, the scientist biopsied the tongue of a six-year-old male cat that had been euthanized for health reasons unrelated to this study. However, a closer look at the protein sequences encoded by these genes showed that they are very different from human genes. As it turned out, the main amino acids that activate umami flavor in people - glutamic and aspartic acid - were mutated in cats. “So I began thinking, maybe cats can’t taste umami,” said McGrane. But, as it turned out, amino acids don’t bind to the cat umami receptor alone. Nucleotides, which are common in meat and yeast, bind to the cat receptor and glutamic and aspartic acid then have an enhancing effect. “That’s the exact opposite of what we see in people,” explained McGrane. Cats love tuna because it contains the nucleotide inosine monophosphate. Tuna also contains large quantities of L-histidine, an essential amino acid for cats, that enhances umami flavor. “The L-histidine content of tuna is much higher than of other fish species and meat sources.”These new findings could be used for the development of tastier cat food and pharmaceuticals. Although cat food manufacturers already knew that cats prefer meaty flavors, they now have much more details about the compounds they can start working with. It’s essential for manufacturers to ensure that animals want to eat the food they formulate and find it appealing. “I think umami is as important for cats as sweet is for humans,” said Toda. Dogs, she explained, can taste both sweet and umami, which may explain why they’re not such fussy eaters. Join the PetGuide community. The Latest Pet Industry Trends from Global Pet Expo 2024

The Latest Pet Industry Trends from Global Pet Expo 2024

On March 20-22, 2024, pet industry professionals from across the globe gathered at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida, for the Global Pet Expo. Presented by the American Pet Products Association (APPA) and the Pet Industry Distributors Association (PIDA), the exhibit floor showcased 1,100+ companies, including 300 first-time exhibitors. This included 1,000+ product launches, the latest pet industry news, a packed New Products Showcase, and more! But what did we discover while attending the show? Here are some of the hottest trends in the industry, as seen at this year’s show: Mind the BudgetIn the last decade, we have seen a growing interest in spoiling our pets regardless of the cost. However, following the events of 2020, many pet parents are feeling the pinch that is society’s current financial state. So, how do we reconcile the two? Many brands came into this year’s show with a focus on providing high-quality pet care with a budget-friendly mindset. This included two distinct approaches. Some companies focused on finding ways to keep the price point low. This included changes to production, simplified designs, and sourcing quality supplies at a fraction of the cost. They then transferred these savings directly to the consumer, allowing you to spoil your pets without breaking the bank. The other trend we saw was to create premium products that, while requiring an upfront investment, are designed to last for years to come. By not having to replace them repeatedly, you will save money over the product's lifespan. Overall, we were excited to see so many ways pet parents can improve their pet’s quality of life, even when finances are tight. Sustainability for the Future A growing understanding of the impact of our pets on the environment has put pressure on the pet industry to find ways to prioritize sustainability. Some experts say that caring for a medium-sized dog can have a similar carbon footprint to driving a large SUV. How do we address this without giving up our pets? We saw several brands rising to the challenge! There was a growing number of companies creating adorable and functional toys from recycled materials. Snugarooz had a wide assortment of brightly colored, crinkly, and squeaky plush toys made from recycled water bottles. WestPaw added more products to their popular Seaflex line of 100% recyclable toys made with recycled ocean-bound plastic. We also saw a focus on sustainability in pet food and treats. One company that really stood out was Arch Pet Food. The company previously demonstrated their commitment to eco-friendly pet ownership by introducing alternative proteins in their food and treats. One product that we found very impressive was the Dehydrated Copi treats, made from an invasive species in our waterways. Other shifts towards sustainability included changes in packaging to reduce unnecessary plastics, the use of hemp-based bedding for small animals, and more sustainable decisions being made during production.

Can Cats Suffer From Depression?

Can Cats Suffer From Depression?

Does your otherwise playful and friendly cat no longer seem interested in their favorite toys? It’s natural to worry when you notice a change in your best friend’s behavior. Changes in your cat’s mood or activity level may signal that something more serious is happening. We often watch for the warning signs of physical illness, but what about depression? Did you know that your cat can also struggle with their mental health? This article will examine the very real risk of feline depression, including the warning signs, what to do if you suspect your cat may be struggling, and prevention tips. Discover helpful strategies to boost your cat’s mental health and help them get back to their usual playful, purring self today. Can Cats Get Depressed? Cats are known for their independence and aloof attitude, but this doesn’t mean they don’t feel things – sometimes very intensely. Just like people, your cat can suffer from mental health challenges, including anxiety and depression. Not only does depression impact them mentally and emotionally, but it can also affect their physical health and well-being. This is why it’s important for us to acknowledge the risks, identify signs that something is “off,” and seek help for our cats when needed. How Can I Tell if My Cat is Depressed? We all know cats are masters of hiding when they aren’t feeling well. This is why physical illnesses and sicknesses can be so difficult to spot. The same is true for cats who are facing challenges with their mental health. The signs are often subtle, meaning we, as cat parents, must be hyper-vigilant. Some of the more common warning signs to watch out for include: Increased vocalization (constant meowing, yowling)Loss of appetite Unexplained weight loss Sleeping more than usual or at times they’d typically be active Loss of interest in activities they once enjoyedDecreased grooming or attention to hygieneDull, matted coat No longer seeking attention or interaction Out-of-character aggression or irritability Hiding or isolating themselves Many of these signs can also be associated with physical illnesses or diseases. If you notice any of these changes, make an appointment with your veterinarian. They will run tests to rule out any physical health problems before discussing recommendations to help manage your cat’s mental health.

Enigmatic Respiratory Illness Targets Dogs – These Are The Symptoms

Enigmatic Respiratory Illness Targets Dogs – These Are The Symptoms

A mysterious and seemingly quite dangerous dog respiratory illness is spreading across the United States– and has veterinarians perplexed. This illness is compared to pneumonia, as it starts with coughing and gradually worsens. To make matters even worse, the illness seems to be resistant to common antibiotics.Officials are now releasing  statements that say dogs are most likely to contract this enigmatic illness directly through contact with other dogs. What this means is that the danger lurks in dog parks, grooming salons, kennels, and any other place where a lot of dogs can be found. While there are some enigmatic aspects to the disease, there are ways, luckily, to recognize it quickly. The most common symptoms to keep an eye out for are coughing, trouble breathing, wheezing, sneezing, nasal and eye discharge, fatigue, lethargy, and so on. According to the Oregon Department of Agriculture, dogs who exhibit these symptoms may also test negative for common causes of respiratory illnesses. Needless to say, owners who spot these symptoms in their dogs should go to the vet immediately. In the meantime, vets are advising owners to avoid places with a lot of dogs for the time being, and also to make sure that their pets are “up to date” with all the necessary vaccinations. And although it is a new illness, officials at the Oregon Department of Agriculture have said that three main categories of cases can already be observed.Chronic mild-moderate tracheobronchitis with a prolonged duration (6 to 8 weeks or longer) that is minimally or not responsive to antibiotics. Chronic pneumonia that is minimally or not responsive to antibiotics.Acute pneumonia rapidly becomes severe and often leads to poor outcomes in as little as 24-36 hours.Checkups are advised, of course, and vets urge owners to schedule visits before exposing their dogs to potentially dangerous environments. According to officials, the illness had been reported in the following U.S. states: Washington, Idaho, Illinois, California, Indiana, Florida, Georgia, Colorado, Oregon, and New Hampshire.“Reduce contact with large numbers of unknown dogs.” the officials advise. “Just like with other respiratory pathogens, the more contacts your dog has, the greater the risk of encountering a dog that’s infectious.”While experts advise dog owners to be careful, but not to worry too much without a reason. Needless to say, you should avoid contact with dogs that look sick or exhibit symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, or runny nose and eyes. Do your best to keep your dog away from them. Another thing to avoid is communal water sources from which many dogs drink. And if your four-legged friend exhibits these symptoms, make sure to keep them at home in order to keep other dogs safe – and of course contact a vet to make sure they get the right treatment on time.

Dog Gets Bitten in the Face to Save His Owner From a Venomous Snake

Dog Gets Bitten in the Face to Save His Owner From a Venomous Snake

A dog from Colorado Springs is being called a hero after stepping between his owner and a rattlesnake, saving her from a venomous bite. The pup’s name is Rizzo. The loyal and brave lab-mix has a wonderful personality and has been an essential part of his owner’s life, bringing emotional support and company. On Monday morning, Rizzo and his owner, Carrisa Welch, were hiking when a rattlesnake, lying in wait in the middle of the hiking trail, struck. “I heard the rattle, turned around, and instantly yanked him,” Rizzo’s owner told KRDO. Unfortunately, she pulled Rizzo too late, and he was bitten in the face. The poor pooch ended up spending a day and a half in the emergency room.“I wasn’t wearing my boots. Those were my trail running shoes - if he had not taken the bite I feel like it would have been me,” said Welch.Welch’s brother-in-law, Joshua Randall, has launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover the cost of Rizzo’s treatment, which has created substantial expenses for his owner. According to the GoFundMe page, Rizzo has been an integral part of his owner’s life, bringing joy and companionship into Welsh’s everyday life. “His bravery and loyalty deserve recognition, and your contribution will ensure he receives the care he needs to heal and thrive once again,” wrote Randall in the campaign. Speaking with the local news outlet, Welch explained how Rizzo was there for her when she was dealing with mental health struggles in the past and that there’s no amount of money she wouldn’t pay to save her pup’s life. Rizzo is now home after racking up a few thousand dollars in vet bills. He has bald spots on the legs where the treatment was administered but is expected to make a full recovery.“I’m grateful and blessed to have him,” Welch said.Although only a few snake bites prove fatal before the dog receives emergency veterinary help, Rizzo was lucky to survive after being bitten in the face. The severity of the snakebite depends on several factors including, the dog’s size, the type and size of the snake, the amount of venom delivered, and the location of the bite wound. American Kennel Club advises owners to call their veterinarian or an emergency clinic immediately if a snake bites their dog. Owners should also inquire whether the vet or clinic carries the antivenom. Antivenom is the best treatment for snakebite and is the most effective when given immediately, but it will also work if administered hours or even days after a bite. Other possible treatments for snakebite in dogs include an opioid injection for the pain. Some veterinarians may attempt to treat snakebite on a dog using other methods, most of which are ineffective. Studies have shown that sucking out venom, antihistamines, ice, corticosteroids, antibiotics, and NSAIDs aren’t effective for treating venomous snakebites on dogs. Don’t take your dog to a vet who advocates the use of any of these methods for treating snakebites. This type of treatment won’t help your dog get better and you’ll also end up spending thousands of dollars for nothing. Eventually, when you decide to take your dog to another vet, you may not be able to afford the effective treatment your pooch needs to recover fully. If your dog gets bitten by a snake, try not to panic and always call the vet to ensure they have a proper treatment plan for venomous snakebites in place. Join the PetGuide community. Why Is My Dog Licking and Chewing His Paws?

Why Is My Dog Licking and Chewing His Paws?

You might think it’s gross, but your pooch certainly doesn’t – canines are known to lick themselves as a way of grooming. While your dog might lick their body thoroughly to keep it clean, sometimes, their self-grooming can be abnormal. If you notice that your pet is licking or even chewing their paws obsessively, it should raise concern. This type of behavior might indicate an underlying medical issue, so here’s what you need to know before you phone your vet.Is It Normal for Dogs to Lick and Chew Their Paws? While some licking of their paws after they get dirty can be perfectly normal, constant licking or chewing of the paws is certainly not usual behavior. There could be several reasons behind this, and it could indicate that your attention and even intervention are needed. Here are some of the most common reasons why dogs lick and chew their paws.Allergies:  Allergies, including food allergies, environmental allergies (such as pollen or dust mites), and contact allergies (for example, from cleaning products or lawn chemicals), can lead to itching and discomfort in dogs. Paw licking and chewing can be a response to this itching. If you suspect that an allergy might be in question, don’t hesitate to visit your vet.Skin irritation or infection: If your dog's paws are red, swollen, or have an unpleasant odor, it may indicate a  skin infection or irritation. Bacterial or fungal infections, as well as foreign objects like splinters or thorns, can lead to serious issues down the road. Again, if you notice any of the above, it’s time to visit the vet.Dry or cracked paw pads: Dry or cracked paw pads can be uncomfortable for dogs. Licking and chewing may be their way of trying to soothe the discomfort. This happens to many dogs, and can be caused by their environment, the surface on which they walk, and many other things. Luckily, you can prevent this with paw wax that will create a barrier between the pads and the walking surface, or treat existing issues with paw butter that soothes and repairs the pads. This particular  2-in-1 paw butter and wax is a favorite of mine because it is made from all-natural ingredients and heals cracked paws in no time – while simultaneously preventing future irritation and dryness.

Sleeping With Pets: Here's What Experts Have to Say

Sleeping With Pets: Here's What Experts Have to Say

Pet parents adore their four-legged companions so much that they choose to sleep with them at night. Research shows that more than half of pet owners sleep with their pets. Most pet owners consider their pets part of the family, so it is no surprise that they will go out of their way to ensure their furry companions’ comfort. However, with an increasing focus on our sleep health, pet parents are starting to wonder about the potential disadvantages of sleeping with pets. In fact, sharing a bed with a pet is the subject of controversy among pet parents.Various studies suggest that there are many benefits to sleeping with pets. And experts tend to agree. According to Audrey Wells, MD, a board-certified sleep medicine physician, a pet can provide an emotional connection and reduce anxiety and stress levels, therefore promoting sleep. “Some people may consider their pets an added layer of security, dependable to alert them to unexpected noises or lights.”Another benefit of sleeping with your pet is that they can keep you nice and warm during the night. People who get chilled easily might enjoy cuddling with a furry companion during frigid winter nights.“Pets are sensitive to routine, and they can help enforce a regular bedtime and better sleep quality for their owner,” explained Dr. Wells. “Similarly, pets can signal wake-up time in the morning and even prompt some time outside for a walk and daylight exposure.”If you enjoy sleeping with your pet and find it beneficial for your sleep, the science agrees with you. According to Amanda Farah, National Training and Behavioral Coordinator at Best Friends Animal Society, studies have found that some people sleep more soundly when their dog is sleeping next to them. “If you and your dog both sleep well together, you’ll enjoy the health benefits that come with a good night’s sleep, such as improved mental clarity, lower blood pressure, reduced stress, and a stronger immune system,” explained Farah.According to Teddy Cralle, Ms, RN, certified clinical sleep educator, some people sleep better when their pet is in the bed, but some don’t. If there’s a chance that you won't get a good night’s rest while sleeping with your pet you shouldn't sleep with them in the first place. For example, if you’re a light sleeper and your dog likes to change positions during the night, sleeping with your pooch may wake you more often, resulting in low-quality sleep. Also, some pups like to claim the entire bed for themselves, leading to a sleepless night and a backache. “Sacrificing your sleep means sacrificing your health, well-being, and quality of life - and that is not a sacrifice to make,” Cralle added.Sharing a bed with a pet may not be the best idea if you’re an asthma or allergy sufferer. Although some dog breeds shed less than others, no dog is truly hypoallergenic because it’s their dander and not hair that triggers an allergic reaction. Zoonotic diseases are another downside of sleeping with pets. Research has confirmed that sharing a bed with a pet can increase the exposure rate to pathogens that might be present. Although no one wants to think about it, pets can bring unwanted guests to your bed. Fleas and ticks are the most active during the warmer months, but the truth is they can infest your pet all year long. If the downsides of sleeping with your pet have made you reconsider your sleeping arrangement don’t fret - you can still have your pooch close by while you sleep. A crate or a cozy dog bed next to your bed will help everyone get a good night’s rest. Join the PetGuide community. Are Hamsters Good Pets for Kids?

Are Hamsters Good Pets for Kids?

Final Thoughts: Hamsters and ChildrenAre hamsters good pets for kids? The short answer is, “maybe.” There are several key factors to consider when deciding if a hamster will be an excellent addition to your family, including the space needed for their habitat, their independent personalities, your child’s interest in a bet, the work (and finances) required to care for your new hamster, and the availability of a veterinarian that will accept small animals. If your child is ready for a pet, but a hamster doesn’t quite check all the boxes on your new pet wishlist, there are many other options, including guinea pigs, cats, dogs, and some species of birds. Don’t rush this decision. Take time to research and find the best fit for your family before committing to your future furry (or feathered) family member.Join the PetGuide community. Dog Ran A Mile to Her Doggy Daycare Center for Help After A Car Crash

Dog Ran A Mile to Her Doggy Daycare Center for Help After A Car Crash

A frightened dog ran a mile through heavy traffic to its doggy daycare to get help after she and her owner were in a car crash. Melisa Fickel, the dog’s owner, said that Aries, a three-year-old pit bull mix has always been a smart pooch. The pup, who was adopted in 2020, learns tricks quickly and loves to play in the park. Aries recently got a chance to show exactly how smart she is. The pooch and her owner were heeded to a local park in Detroit, Michigan when another car hit them from behind. Luckily, no one was injured, and both vehicles sustained only minor damages. However, the car accident spooked Aries, prompting her to jump out of the car’s window and run off into traffic. “I had the windows down because Aries likes to hang her head out,” said Fickel to a local TV station. “As soon as there was that smack, as soon as I felt and heard it, almost instantaneously, she was out the window.”Fearing the worst, Fickel was concerned about her pup’s safety. While dealing with the police and her insurance company, her mind was preoccupied with all the ways Aries could be in danger,“I can’t really think about it because so many things could have happened,” she added. What Fickel didn’t know is that Aries ran about a mile down the road, to the safest place she could be in - the Hounds Town Metro Detroid, the doggy daycare she frequently visits. Security footage recorded at the daycare showed Aries arriving at the center during the staff’s noon break when employees usually shut down the lobby to clean and catch up with other tasks. According to Dominic Pace, the daycare’s general manager, he and another employee were in the lobby when they saw something outside. “We noticed something dart past the front door,” said Pace. “It was like a black blur that just went past.”Thinking that they might have seen a dog, Pace went outside and found Aries standing by the sidewalk leading to the daycare’s front door. The pooch was panting and looked scared. Once inside the daycare, Aries has calmed down. Pace thought the dog looked familiar, so he called Travis Odgen, the daycare’s owner. At first, Odgen thought that it might be a stray dog, but as he got a better look, he instantly recognized Aries. “I was like, ‘Oh, that looks like Aries’ and then she walks closer and I’m like ‘That is Aries!’” he said. “I start to pet her and she gives me kisses, and she rolls over for me, recognizing me.”Although happy to see Aries, Odgen was confused to see the pooch without her owner. He immediately called Fickel to find out what was happening and to tell her that her dog was in the daycare.Everything made sense once Odgen learned about the fender bender and Aries’ escape. He assured the pup’s owner that she was safe and sound, minus a small cut on her paw. The staff promised to look after the pup until her owner sorted out everything and was able to pick her up.According to Pace, Aries is a very friendly and sweet dog who loves to flop on her back, expecting belly rubs from anyone nearby. “Dogs do have an intuition of knowing where they are and where they can be safe,” he said. “She knows that she’s safe here, that she has people here that will take care of her and dogs are pretty intuitive when it comes to that kind of thing.”Join the PetGuide community. More And More Pets Are Having Allergies, Trupanion Reports

More And More Pets Are Having Allergies, Trupanion Reports

The time when spring blooms and summer comes to the doorstep is an idyllic period for most, but a lot of people dread this time of the year because of seasonal allergies that cause s lot of sneezing, headaches, and all-around discomfort. Now, it seems, it’s not just us humans that can experience nasty spring allergies – data indicates that our four-legged best friends are also affected by them. Dogs, in particular, are very susceptible to  spring allergies and are increasingly treated for their symptoms, such as itchy skin. Are All Dogs At Risk for Spring Allergies? It is important to be aware that the trees and flowers that bloom in spring can be a source of allergies for your pet. Not only are spring allergies very uncomfortable for dogs, but they can potentially lead to many secondary issues, the most dangerous of which is a skin infection. And if you think that chances for a spring allergy affecting your dog are low, consider a recent report issued by the pet insurance company Trupanion. They claim that there was a 45% increase in allergy claims for insured pets over the course of four years since 2019. This means that allergies are on the rise, both for pets and their owners. In fact, as  Axios reports, according to the insurer Nationwide, spring allergies are at the top of the list of health conditions that end in vet visits. Another key fact is related to allergy drugs. Since two of the major allergy drugs were released in 2013 and 2018, more than 20 million dogs have been treated by them, in an effort to battle spring allergy effects. Of course, if you suspect that your pet is suffering from a spring allergy, it is key to visit your vet as soon as possible. Depending on the effects, your vet can prescribe topical, injectable, or chewable treatments that help reduce  itchiness and other issues. And, considering that such allergies are seasonal, be ready for them with the arrival of spring and the blooming of trees. Learn to spot the symptoms such as itchiness, and to react quickly!

A Six-legged Abandoned Dog Has Surgery to Remove Extra Limbs

A Six-legged Abandoned Dog Has Surgery to Remove Extra Limbs

A six-legged cocker spaniel found abandoned in a supermarket parking lot in Wales has had surgery to remove her extra limbs. The pooch was named Ariel, after the Little Mermaid, because her extra limbs were fused together, resembling a mermaid’s tail. Greenacres Rescue, a non-profit group from Haverfordwest in Pembrokeshire, Wales, took Ariel in, arranged her surgery, and found her a foster family.  Ariel, who was born with multiple birth defects, was operated on at Langford Vets Small Animal Referral Hospital. Surgeon Aaron Lutchman performed the surgery and managed to save all four limbs amid fears that one hind leg might have to be amputated. “She’s doing really well, she’s bounced back and she’s a happy little dog and we’re hoping she’s going to go on to lead a fabulous little life,” said Lutchman. “She’s got her own little character and even though she’s had a tough start in life she really has done well to come through this as she has… if we can do what we can to help then that’s just absolutely brilliant.” According to Mikey Lawlor, founder and manager of Greenacres Rescue, Ariel was skinny and distressed when she was rescued. “The vet who initially assessed Ariel noted that, in addition to her two surplus back legs, she also had an additional vulva,” said Lawlor. A CT scan later revealed that Ariel was born with only one kidney, which increased the complexity of the medical treatment she required. Unfortunately, the pup’s pelvis never formed properly because she had two hip joints on one side of the body. As a result, Ariel’s normal hind leg had no muscle tone, so there was a chance that that leg had to be amputated as well. “Thankfully, that wasn’t the case though as it’s shown signs of having strengthened a lot in recent months,” Lawlor added.Ariel is recovering nicely after her surgery, having lots of love and fuss from the nursing team. Now that the surgery is behind her, everyone is hoping that she’ll have an easy and quick recovery.“There were two procedures which lasted about two hours, but both went fine. The next day she was up, walking around and eating and drinking.”“Now we just need to keep our fingers crossed she doesn’t get any infections, but she really is in the best of hands,” added Lawlor according to BBC. The brave pooch was discharged over the weekend and has already returned home to her foster family in Wales. According to her vet, Ariel has to rest for the next two weeks to recover completely. The founder of Greenacres Rescue hopes that the organization will be able to find a forever home for Ariel after she completes physiotherapy and recovery. “The response we had to Ariel’s story so far, including calls and emails from as far away as New York and Australia, has been incredible - so I’ve no doubt she’ll be snapped up,” said Lawlor.“I just can’t say enough of a thank you to everyone who’s contributed to helping her.” The organization raised around $19,000 for Ariel’s life-changing surgery thanks to donations from people all over the world.“Ariel was a complicated little dog whose care required close collaboration across a number of our specialist teams, including orthopedics, soft tissue surgery, anesthesia, and radiology,” said Vicki Black, the director of Langford Vets’ Hospital. “As part of the University of Bristol, we are a center committed to career-long learning and are proud to innovate and treat pets like Ariel. We are delighted such a lovely animal has recovered well from her surgery.”Join the PetGuide community. Get the latest pet news and product recommendations by subscribing to our newsletter here.

42% of Pet Parents Feel Caring for Pets is More Stressful Than Kids!

42% of Pet Parents Feel Caring for Pets is More Stressful Than Kids!

Pets can be an incredible addition to any family, but they can also come with a bit of stress. In fact, a recent study revealed that nearly half of pet parents shared that caring for their pet was more stressful than caring for their partner or even their children! What is it about our pets that worries us the most? That was the goal of the recent survey conducted by OnePoll and ElleVet Sciences. They polled 2000 pet owners, asking them questions about their relationships, their pets, and the stress that they experience in their role. The answers revealed that the top three sources of stress in most people’s lives include their finances (54%), their job or career (49%), and their ability to care for their pets (42%). The survey went on to discuss reasons for being stressed about our pets, and there was one concern that the majority of respondents shared – as pet parents, we worry about our ability to provide the care our pets will need in their senior years. As our pets get older, their needs often change. We can see this in the way they act and the activities they engage in. A once hyperactive, high-energy dog may start to slow down and sleep more. A dog that easily jumped onto the couch most of their lives now requires stairs or a ramp to get up for cuddle time. Not all changes that come with aging are inherently bad, but 68% of parents say watching their pet age and suffer would be more hurtful to them than losing their job (61%) or breaking up with their partner (61%). “Supporting your pet through all stages of life can minimize their stress, allowing you to create more happy memories together,” shared Amanda Howland, co-founder and CCO of ElleVet Sciences. “As your pet gets older, it’s important to be proactive in identifying the signs of aging, such as difficulty moving, trouble sleeping, and social isolation. It’s all about more time, and more quality time with your pet, and for them, aging and stress are intertwined so taking care of discomfort-related aging and cognitive decline can reduce their stress significantly.” The concern shared by the survey respondents (and other pet parents nationwide) clearly illustrates how important our pets are in our lives. While 73% of those surveyed described their pet as their “protector,” they serve many other vital roles in our lives – our best friends, sounding boards, cheerleaders, motivators, and companions. Your senior pet may require some changes around the home. Throw rugs can be used to provide traction on slippery floors. Safety gates are key for blocking off unsafe areas like staircases that could lead to injury. Caring for our senior pets may be stressful, but it’s also an opportunity to repay our pets for everything they have given us throughout their lives. Even just setting aside time in your schedule each day for a walk around the block followed by a short cuddle on the couch can positively impact their lives, reducing stress and promoting better health. “Just like us, pets’ needs can change as they age, so their daily routines, diet, and exercise may need to be adjusted to improve their quality of life, as well as adding high-quality supplements,” Howland explained. “Small adjustments can ensure your pet’s golden years are less stressful for both themselves and their human companion.”

Is A Wet Dog's Nose Good or Bad?

Is A Wet Dog's Nose Good or Bad?

A dog’s nose is their tool for discovering the world around them through scent, but dog noses are important for much more than sniffing – the state of your pet’s nose can sometimes be indicative of their health. It can be dry and flaky or wet and soft, so what is better? Is a dry nose a bad sign? Or a wet one? Or are they both normal? These are the questions that are often proving to be troubling for dog owners. So let’s try and answer them once and for all!Is A Wet Dog's Nose Good or Bad?A wet dog's nose is usually a sign of good health. Most often, the nose is wet because the doggo is licking it! They do this frequently in order to keep them clean and to enhance their sense of smell. In fact, a moist nose helps them trap scent particles more effectively. The moisture on their nose captures scent molecules from the air, allowing them to better identify and track smells. This ability is crucial for tasks such as hunting, tracking, and even detecting certain medical conditions in humans.

Wheelchair Travel

Moscow Public Transportation

The public transportation system in Moscow is moderately accessible, much to the surprise of many. Use of this transportation network will require some planning for disabled travelers, especially those in wheelchairs. An ability to understand and recognize the Cyrillic alphabet will also make its use much easier for travelers of all abilities. The city’s subway system is not accessible to wheelchairs. The vast majority of city buses and trolley buses offer step-free access.

Metro Subway

The Moscow Metro Subway is spread across 12 lines and serves 196 stations throughout the city. While some stations have recently had elevators installed, the system cannot be considered wheelchair accessible. Large gaps of up to 6 inches exist between the subway train and station platforms. Trains are often not level with the platform and require a step up of a similar distance.

Stations without elevators require travelers to ascend or descend long flights of stairs. I strongly recommend that you use the accessible city bus network and avoid the subway.

City Bus and Trolleybus System

Moscow is served by an increasingly modern city bus system with hundreds of routes/lines. Every major city street is served by at least one bus line. Busses are numbered and lettered with route information. The network consists of normal, gas-powered city buses and the largest electricity-powered trolleybus system in the world.

The majority of city buses and trolleybuses now have lowered floors and are wheelchair accessible. The door at the center of the bus is equipped with a manual ramp which the bus operator will extend for wheelchair users. These ramps can be quite steep, but the bus operator can assist with pushing the wheelchair up the ramp. Wheelchair accessible buses are equipped with a securement space for wheelchairs with tie downs/straps and a seatbelt. Priority reserved seating is available for seniors and persons with disabilities.

All wheelchair accessible buses are marked with the international symbol of access (the wheelchair icon) at the center door or on the front of the vehicle. Wheelchair entry is possible only through the center door, where the retractable or fold out ramp is located. Wheelchair travelers ride the city bus and trolleybus free of charge. You should flag down the approaching bus if wish to ride, so that the operator can maneuver the bus close to the curb for ramp deployment.

On-street rail trams

The City of Moscow is served by 44 on street tram lines, which run on recessed rails and are powered by electricity. All trams require riders to climb several steps in order to access the passenger cabin. There are no implements which make wheelchair access possible. Disabled travelers should plan to avoid any routes which require the use of a tram. City buses adequately serve all parts of the city in which the trams operate.

City Sightseeing Moscow Hop-on/off Tour Bus

Although it is not managed by the city, the City Sightseeing Moscow tour bus travels to all of the major sights in Moscow and allows patrons to hop-on and hop-off at nearly 40 stops. The bus stops at or near all of the sights I have reviewed on this website. The next bus is available 30-40 minutes after the one before and the entire route circle takes 60 minutes to complete. Buses are wheelchair accessible, with fold-out ramps at the rear doors. One dedicated wheelchair space is available on each bus.

Passengers are provided with a set of headphones which can be plugged in to the at-seat ports. An audio guide is available in multiple languages, including English. Tickets for adults, good for 24 hours from the time of purchase, are available for 700 RUB. They can be purchased online with credit card, or onboard the bus with cash.  Tickets are provided free of charge to wheelchair users and for other persons with proof of disability. Discounts are also available to seniors with identification. For additional information on the Moscow City Sightseeing Bus or to download route maps, visit  city-sightseeing.com .

Moscow Travel Guide: Best Things to Do + More [2023]

· everything to know about visiting moscow, including the best things to do and how to get around. ·.

the red st basils church in moscow on a white winters day

Moscow is Russia’s vibrant capital city, and it also happens to be the largest city in all of Europe. The city’s long and infamous history makes it one of the most unique places we have ever visited.

The architecture ranges from centuries-old palaces to uniform, gray concrete buildings. The people range from cold and private to warm and welcoming. Moscow is a city is strong juxtapositions, and we learned a lot during our time there.

This post will break down all you need to know about visiting Moscow, including the best things to do, how to get there, how to get around, and more.

The Best Things to Do in Moscow

1. explore the red square.

The Red Square is the heart of Moscow. Most of the city’s top attractions can be found here, including just about everything on this list. The Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral, and Lenin’s Mausoleum are all located here, and the State Historical Museum and GUM are not far from here, either.

The Red Square is a common home for parades, protests, and seasonal celebrations. There are massive Christmas celebrations here, with food vendors and carnival rides set up in numbers.

2. Check Out the Ziferblat

The Ziferblat is a café in Moscow that is unlike any café we have ever been to. While most cafes charge you for your drinks and food, the Ziferblat charges you for your time.

Upon arrival, you are given a clock. When you leave, the barista calculates how much time you spent in the café and charges you accordingly. This concept was created to help visitors to be more intentional with their time, and the cafe itself is incredibly charming.

For a detailed look at everything you need to know before you visit, make sure you read my post about visiting the Ziferblat Cafe in Moscow .

3. Marvel at St. Basil’s Cathedral

St. Basil’s Cathedral is one of the most iconic churches in the world, and it was the single thing we were most excited to see while in Moscow. Built almost 500 years ago, St. Basil’s Cathedral is recognized by its colorful domes and whimsical style. The church is of the Russian Orthodox faith, and the inside is just as wondrous as the outside.

St. Basil’s Cathedral is located on the edge of the Red Square, making it incredibly convenient to visit. Entrance for non-worshippers costs 800 rubles, and tickets can be bought at the church

4. Explore the Kremlin

The Kremlin is the largest active fortress in Europe, and it is the site of most of Russia’s government affairs. In addition to government buildings, the Kremlin Complex is filled with courtyards, towers, and museums that are open to the public. If you have the time, you could spend a couple of days fully exploring all that there is to see in the Kremlin.

5. Walk Through Lenin’s Mausoleum

Vladimir Lenin is one of the most important figures in Russian history, and his body is located perfectly embalmed in a mausoleum in the Red Square. The Mausoleum is open to the public to visit, and as long as you are willing to go through a few security checks, it is easily one of the best things to do in Moscow. Its convenient location in the Red Square makes it a can’t miss attraction.

There is absolutely no photography allowed inside the Mausoleum. Do not test this rule.

6. Wander Along Arbat Street

The Arbat is a very popular street in Moscow that is lined with stores, cafes, and other touristy attractions. It is one of the oldest streets in the city, dating back to the 1400s. This street is both quaint and trendy, and there are many walking tours that introduce tourists to the neighborhood’s wonders and highlights.

7. Catch a Show at the Bolshoi Theatre

As a lover of the arts, it is hard to think of Moscow and not think of ballet. Russia has always been a top dog in the world of fine arts, and Bolshoi Theater is one of the best places to catch a performance. We were lucky enough to attend an Opera here, and it is a venue that you don’t want to miss out on if you enjoy opera, ballet, or orchestral performances.

8. Visit the State Historical Museum

The State Historical Museum is one of the most respected museums in Moscow. Despite its name, it is not really focused on the history of Russia as a nation. Rather, it contains a collection of artifacts from all throughout Russia’s history.

The museum’s collection is very broad in nature. It houses some items from indigenous tribes that used to occupy the region, pieces collected by the Romanov family, and more.

9. Wander Around GUM

GUM is an absolutely massive mall within walking distance of the Red Square. It isn’t just the size that draws visitors here; it’s the sense of luxury. The mall is so beautiful inside, much like the metro stations.

While visiting a mall might not sound like it belongs on a bucket list, this mall does. You will not want to miss out on visiting GUM while in Moscow.

10. Admire the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour

While St. Basil’s Cathedral is the most iconic church in Moscow, it isn’t the only one. The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour is absolutely stunning, with massive golden domes. It is the tallest Orthodox church in the world, and it is the seat of the Orthodox Patriarch of Moscow.

It is located just about a mile from the Red Square, just south of the Kremlin Complex. You can walk to it from the Red Square in about 20 minutes.

How to Get to Moscow

Flying to moscow.

Moscow has three major international airports: Sheremetyevo (SVO) , Domodedovo (DMO) , and Vnukovo (VKO) . All three of them are directly connected to downtown Moscow by the Aeroexpress trains, which leave every 30 minutes throughout the day. By Aeroexpress train, you can expect to get to the city center in 25-45 minutes depending on the airport that you fly into.

Sheremetyevo is the biggest and busiest of the three airports, and it is the one you are most likely to fly into – especially if you are coming from outside of Europe or the Caucus region. We flew into Sheremetyevo on a direct flight from New York City.

I usually provide backup airport options, because flying right into the city isn’t always the cheapest way to get where you’re going. Unfortunately, when it comes to Moscow, don’t really have a choice other than to fly right into Moscow. It is a very remote city, and it is usually the cheapest place to fly into in Russia as a whole.

Since Sheremetyevo is so busy, you will probably find a great flight option anyway. I wrote in  my post about finding cheap flights  that using hub airports will lead to more affordable airfare, and the same logic applies here. Even though Russia’s national airline, Aeroflot, is no longer a member of the SkyTeam Alliance, Moscow is still a major hub connecting passengers from all over the world.

Train or Bus to Moscow

Trains and buses are one of the most popular ways to get around Europe. However, they’re of very little use when you’re trying to get to Moscow.

Moscow is hundreds of miles from the nearest major cities. The only major European city that can even be reached within 8 hours on the ground is St. Petersburg, and even the Baltic capitals of Riga, Vilnius, and Tallinn are over 12 hours away.

If you want to get to Moscow, the best option is almost always to fly. While the train routes to Moscow are scenic, they simply take forever.

How to Get Around Moscow

METRO | TROLLEYS | TRAMS | BUSES

Moscow has one of the most memorable metro systems in the world. Its metro lines are very deep underground, and the stations are absolutely stunning. Each station has its own unique style, but all of them contain escalators that seem to go on forever.

turned-on chandelier on ceiling of moscow metro

The system was built in an effort to showcase the power of the Soviet Union and its bright future. The plans were a form of propaganda, but they resulted in what is still one of the most visually appealing subway systems on earth.

Moscow’s metro system isn’t just pretty. It is also very useful and accessible. The system has 17 lines that connect the city and its surrounding area.

But wait; there’s more!

The Moscow metro system is also incredibly affordable, with each ride costing less than a dollar. The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow, as it is almost impossible to beat the connection times and the low cost to ride.

Tickets can be bought at electronic, English-speaking kiosks in stations, or directly from ticket counters at certain larger stations. There are also day passes available, which are a very solid option if you plan on riding the metro several times per day.

The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow.

In addition to the metro system, Moscow also has a network of buses, trams, and trolleys. This system is nowhere near as convenient or well-connected as the metro, though, and is likely of little use to you during your trip. There is no Uber in Moscow, but a similar app named Yandex is available if you need a ride in a pinch.

How Many Days Do You Need in Moscow?

Moscow is the biggest city in all of Europe, and it is absolutely loaded with things to do. You could spend weeks in Moscow and still find new things to do. Of course, most travelers don’t have that kind of time to spend in one place!

I recommend spending no less than three full days in Moscow, and ideally closer to five or seven.

Moscow is very spread out, and it can take some time to get from one major point to another. There are also so many places that are nice to just sit back and relax, which is hard to do when you’re in a hurry trying to cram activities into just a few days.

If you only have a week to visit Russia, I’d advise spending all of the time in one city. If you decide to split your time between Moscow and St. Petersburg, I recommend not trying to squeeze in any day trips beyond those two cities.

When Is the Best Time of the Year to Visit Moscow?

There are two different ways to approach this question. Personally, I think the best time to visit Moscow is around Christmas and New Year’s Day. While the weather will be absolutely freezing, Moscow is a surreal winter wonderland in December and January.

We were in Moscow right before Christmas. While it was very cold, you can always bundle up. Exploring the Christmas markets and pop-up ice skating rinks throughout Moscow is one of my favorite memories from anywhere I’ve traveled, and I dream of going back to do it again.

If you aren’t fond of the cold, Moscow is beautiful in the summer. It tends to get pretty cold in the shoulder seasons, so if you want warm weather, you should plan to visit in the summer. Moscow actually gets pretty warm in July and August, and there are a bunch of fantastic places to soak up the sun within the city.

The best time to visit Moscow is either around Christmas or from late May to August.

Is Moscow Safe to Visit?

While Moscow is a truly wonderful city, there’s no denying that visiting Russia comes with risks. As the country is run by an infamous communist dictator, concerns about visiting are valid. While we didn’t experience any sort of threat or negative treatment during our time in Moscow, we visited in a peaceful time.

In our experience, Russia doesn’t seem to detain normal Americans or Westerners to use as pawns. As a regular person, as long as you don’t commit any crimes, there is a slim chance you will run into any issues. However, Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

To make matters worse, Russia has a bad reputation for gang violence. While the Russian mafia has very little interest in normal Western tourists, they won’t hesitate to pick a fight with anyone who ventures into their sphere of influence. If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

Finally, since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, things are all very different. Russia is currently at war, and there are battles raging within 8 hours of Moscow. While it is still relatively safe to visit, that could change at any time as the war with Ukraine continues.

Is Moscow Worth Visiting?

Without a doubt, Moscow is worth visiting. It is one of the most unique major cities we have ever visited, and we hope to make it back one day. The Russian Orthodox churches are stunning, the city’s history is unlike any other, and the food is to die for.

While many visitors prefer St. Petersburg to Moscow, I think Moscow deserves a lot of hype of its own. Moscow is the beating heart of Russian culture and history, and it’s a place I highly recommend checking out if you have the chance.
