South America’s JetSmart to adopt American’s AAdvantage loyalty program

Edward Russell

American Airlines' AAdvantage loyalty program is about to get a little bit bigger with the addition of South American budget carrier JetSmart.

The Chilean airline will adopt AAdvantage as its own loyalty program later this year, JetSmart CEO Estuardo Ortiz said Tuesday at the Routes Americas conference in Bogota, Colombia. Once complete, any traveler on JetSmart's flights will be able to accrue or redeem AAdvantage miles.

"We think, for a certain segment, it's going to be pretty valuable," Ortiz said of the plan, which he called "pioneering."

Want more airline-specific news? Sign up for TPG's free biweekly Aviation newsletter .

The airlines are still determining if JetSmart flights will be eligible for AAdvantage tier status, he added.

JetSmart's adoption of AAdvantage comes three years after the airlines unveiled a wide-ranging partnership . The unique deal saw American, a full-service carrier, take an equity stake in ultra-low-cost carrier JetSmart with plans for future codeshare and loyalty tie-ups.

The deal followed American's loss of longtime partner LATAM to Delta Air Lines in 2019. LATAM and Delta subsequently launched a joint venture covering U.S.-South America flights in late 2022. The partnership allows LATAM and Delta to legally coordinate flights, fares and other commercial activities.

American — which also forged a new partnership with Brazilian airline Gol after losing LATAM — completed its purchase of a 35.4% stake in JetSmart in late 2022. The airlines implemented codeshares on the discounter's flights in Chile and Peru last year. Codeshares in Argentina and Colombia, where JetSmart launched domestic flights earlier in March, are set to begin later this year.

One airline adopting another's loyalty program is unusual, but not unheard of, in global air travel. Finnair adopted Avios as its loyalty currency earlier in March, joining the likes of Aer Lingus, British Airways, Iberia and Qatar Airways. Avios is owned by International Airlines Group. Also, Copa Airlines used United Airlines' MileagePlus program for its loyalty needs until launching its own program, ConnectMiles, in 2015.

For JetSmart, Ortiz sees adopting AAdvantage as a boost to the rapidly growing budget airline's business. Some selling points are that AAdvantage is the largest airline loyalty program in the world and one of the largest in Latin America.

"I think we're evolving in a manner that we really didn't expect but it's definitely welcome," he said. "It's more passengers, [and] it's higher yields."

American executives have previously described the partnership as expanding the utility of AAdvantage in South America. That could subsequently boost membership in the program — which is highly lucrative for American — and get more people on the airline's flights into and out of the region.

JetSmart operates 35 aircraft across four countries: Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Peru. It has orders for another 73 Airbus A320neo-family planes and likely more from majority owner Indigo Partners, according to the latest orders and deliveries data from Airbus.

Asked about JetSmart's growth plans, Ortiz declined to provide specifics but said the focus for the next few years is to further develop its network in the four countries where it already operates.

Ortiz was mum on any plans to serve the U.S.

Flybondi vs. jetsmart: analyzing the argentine low-cost giants.

What sets apart these two low-cost Argentinian players?

Over the past eight years, the low-cost market in Argentina has grown rapidly, and along with it, domestic tourism and travel have exploded. Getting around the South American nation has never been more affordable, and there are two young ultra-low-cost carriers to thank for this.

First, Flybondi took to the skies in 2018 and has grown to serve 21 destinations. JetSmart Argentina, a subsidiary of Indigo Partners-backed JetSmart, commenced operations a year later in 2019 and operates at 13 airports across the country and in neighboring Brazil and Chile.

But what sets these two carriers apart? And which of these two young airlines is likely to have an edge as Argentina's aviation market continues to develop in the coming years?

Flybondi background

Launched in 2018, Flybondi was Argentina's first ultra-low-cost carrier, and the company's slogan, "the freedom of flying," accurately speaks for the carrier's business model and goals.

Find the latest South American aviation news here

Using a fleet of 10 737-800 aircraft, Flybondi helped bring air travel to the masses in Argentina, allowing many to visit destinations they never had before, thanks to the carrier's rock-bottom prices.

Operating from a base at Buenos Aires' Aeroparque Jorge Newbery (AEP), Flybondi serves destinations up and down Argentina in addition to Rio de Janeiro (GIG) and São Paulo (GRU). Seasonal service also features flights to Florianopolis (FLN) and Punta del Este (PDP) in Uruguay.

The company has undergone rapid development within the past year alone, with the carrier expanding its fleet by 1/3 before the start of 2023 .

JetSmart Argentina background

The story of JetSmart Argentina begins in 2016 when the company was founded as Alas del Sur Lineas Aereas, a carrier aiming to operate not just short-haul service within Argentina but also long-haul service to the United States.

However, after the airline failed to commence flight operations by its target date, American Private Equity firm Indigo Partners, which also maintains a controlling interest in Frontier Airlines , acquired the fledgling carrier via its Chilean subsidiary JetSmart. In 2019, the airline expanded further by acquiring Norwegian Air Argentina .

Today, JetSmart Argentina operates a fleet of 8 Airbus A320 aircraft and serves 13 cities nationwide, alongside international destinations Rio de Janeiro (GIG) and Santiago (SCL).

The bottom line

Across the board, both Flybondi and JetSmart Argentina are in strong positions to expand going into the second half of the 2020s. The aviation market in Argentina continues to grow, and so will the demand for low-cost travel.

JetSmart Argentina, due to its integration with the rest of the JetSmart and Indigo Partners network, will likely be in a better position for international expansion and development.

Flybondi, however, is likely in a better position to react rapidly to any changes in the market due to its detachment from a parent company. Furthermore, with its major competitor JetSmart being owned by a firm in the United States, the carrier may benefit from an increasing trend towards supporting Argentine-owned companies within the nation.

The future of low-cost aviation is bright in Argentina, with two capable carriers leading the charge and helping connect people from across the South American nation.

The Moscow Metro is the third most intensive subway system in the world after Tokyo and Seoul subways. The first line was opened on May 15, 1935. Since 1955, the metro has the name of V.I. Lenin.

The system consists of 12 lines with a total length of 305.7 km. Forty four stations are recognized cultural heritage. The largest passenger traffic is in rush hours from 8:00 to 9:00 and from 18:00 to 19:00.

Cellular communication is available on most of the stations of the Moscow Metro. In March 2012, a free Wi-Fi appeared in the Circle Line train. The Moscow Metro is open to passengers from 5:20 to 01:00. The average interval between trains is 2.5 minutes.

The fare is paid by using contactless tickets and contactless smart cards, the passes to the stations are controlled by automatic turnstiles. Ticket offices and ticket vending machines can be found in station vestibules.

Already planning to see the next solar eclipse in 2026? What travelers need to know.

Umbraphiles feeling the post-eclipse blues should start checking the expiration date on their passports.

The next total solar eclipse is set to happen on Aug. 12, 2026, over Greenland, Iceland, Spain, Russia and a small part of Portugal, according to NASA .

In North America, only a partial eclipse will be visible, so if April’s event made you an eclipse chaser and you want to see totality, you’ll need to head overseas.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

Here’s what you’ll need to know before packing your bags:

Do you need a passport or visa for the best destination?

The path of totality for the 2026 eclipse mostly goes through places Americans can travel visa-free with their passport, so long as they’re planning to stay for less than 90 days.

Spain, Portugal, Iceland and Greenland all allow visa-free tourist travel for U.S. passport holders.

Spain, Portugal and Iceland are also members of the Schengen Area, which allows for visa-free travel in much of Europe, meaning if you decide to make a multi-country trip out of your eclipse adventure, you won’t need to clear customs if you’re coming from much of the rest of Europe, either.

One major change for travelers to Europe from the U.S., however, is that electronic preauthorization will become a requirement beginning in mid-2025. The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) requirement will apply to all four open countries in the path of totality.

Depending on the state of the Ukraine war, travel to Russia may or may not be an option for most Americans by 2026, so it’s unclear what the paperwork requirements will be by then.

Is it better to see it from the beach?

Beaches can be a great place to see the eclipse because there are few natural obstacles blocking observers’ views of the sky. The 2026 path of totality passes over beaches on Spain’s northern and southeastern coasts, as well as over islands in the Mediterranean Sea including Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza. The eclipse will also pass over coastal areas in Greenland and Iceland, according to the National Solar Observatory .

Cruising Altitude: What it was like to see the eclipse from a plane

Will there be eclipse cruises or flights?

Almost certainly, although most operators have not announced specific plans yet.

Cruise lines will also offer more viewing opportunities. Princess Cruises “has created a bespoke itinerary aboard Sky Princess to position the ship near Spain on that date,” according to a spokesperson for the line. The cruise will open for bookings on Princess’s website on May 23.

Cunard Line has sailings on its Queen Mary 2 , Queen Victoria and Queen Anne vessels that will put passengers in prime spots to watch .

'The ship can move': Why you should watch next solar eclipses from a cruise ship

Holland America Line is also planning multiple sailings around the event, though details are still to be announced. “Guests have reacted positively to our 2024 eclipse cruises and with the next full eclipse in 2026 we plan to have three sailings in Europe that will align with the path of the eclipse,” Paul Grigsby, the line's vice president of Deployment & Itinerary Planning, previously told USA TODAY in an email.

This article originally appeared on USA TODAY: Already planning to see the next solar eclipse in 2026? What travelers need to know.

You Can Help Migrating Fish Traverse a Dutch Canal By Ringing This Digital ‘Doorbell’

The live stream from the Netherlands, which lets viewers notify a boat lock operator when fish need to be let through, has become a popular pastime for people around the world

Aaron Boorstein

Staff Contributor

a fish appears on the live stream underwater

In 2020, ecologist Mark van Heukelum was strolling through Utrecht in the Netherlands, when he noticed that fish had congregated in a canal on one side of a 200-year-old boat lock, writes the New York Times ’ Callie Holtermann. Since boats do not usually travel through the city’s canals in the spring, the lock hadn’t been opened, and the creatures were trapped behind it.

“In the early spring, when the water gets warmer, some fish species migrate to shallower water, and they swim right through the center of Utrecht looking for a place to spawn and reproduce,” ecologist Anne Nijs tells BBC Wildlife ’s Melissa Hobson.

But the lock cuts off the animals’ progress—and waiting near it puts fish in a life-threatening position. When fish are stuck in the canal, predators like grebes and cormorants can more easily snatch them.

To help fish migrate safely during the canal’s quiet season, Nijs and van Heukelum came up with an innovative solution: the fish doorbell (or de Visdeurbel in Dutch). Launched in spring 2021, the webpage features a live stream from an underwater camera, allowing viewers worldwide to check for fish waiting at the closed lock—then, they click a pink button on the site when the animals appear on screen.

Each time a user “rings” the doorbell, the service snaps a picture of the fish and sends it to a team of ecologists. After enough fish are waiting, they notify the lock’s operator that the gate should be opened.

Nijs and van Heukelum worked with Utrecht’s government and local water authorities to establish the doorbell strategy.

“We live in a country which is partly below sea level. And we build a lot of dams and dykes and locks, which is great, because it keeps our feet dry. But at the same time, we create many, many obstacles for fish,” van Heukelum tells NPR’s Weekend Edition Saturday .

YouTube Logo

Now in its fourth year of operation, the doorbell usually runs between March and late June . With predators more active during the daytime, the website recommends visiting the live stream at night to spot fish swimming in the safety of darkness.

When the doorbell first launched on March 29, 2021, many Utrecht residents thought it was an April Fools’ joke. But now, it has become widely popular. This year, the fish doorbell has had roughly 1.2 million unique users since March 1, and its viewers have rung the doorbell more than 40,000 times.

“Some people are obsessed by it, and we receive a lot of fan mail,” Nijs tells BBC Wildlife .

While tuning in from the website is ideal, as that is the only place viewers can click the doorbell, the stream is also available on YouTube. The website can only host about 950 streamers at once, so any additional viewers get directed to the YouTube video.

Wildlife live streams, from cheetah births to beluga whale migrations , are often popular online for their educational and entertainment value—and the fish doorbell is no different.

“Somebody who had been very depressed and anxious reached out to me and said that the fish doorbell was the only thing that … could make her feel calm and distract her from difficult thoughts,” Nijs tells Scientific American ’s Riis Williams. “It really is so special for people to knowingly watch something with 900 other people around the world at the same time.”

Watching animals online can lead people to care more for wildlife, according to a 2018 study published in the Journal of Ecotourism . A pair of researchers investigated whether viewing live streams of brown bears at Alaska’s Katmai National Park and Preserve yielded positive environmental sentiment. They wrote that “the ability of online viewing to generate a positive emotional connection to bears was observed.”

With the doorbell in particular, people around the world can have a direct impact on the wildlife they see in the live stream—which is a large part of its success, Lisa Brideau , a climate policy specialist in Canada, tells the New York Times . But with the live stream’s legion of existing users, she suggests that people look for other ways to help wildlife closer to home.

“The doorbell is covered,” she tells the publication. “Where else can we put this energy?”

Travel + Leisure

Given just how many miles they log in the air day after day, flight attendants are the undisputed experts when it comes to travel gear expertise. So we listen up when they share their favorite products for a day in the life on the job.

But we’re equally interested to know what keeps them going when they’re not at work, rather traveling off-duty in between flights with the rest of us civilians. Here, flight attendants have shared their must-haves for their off-duty travels with Travel + Leisure, including everything from a genius tote bag to tech must-haves to beach sandals and more. Conveniently, these flight attendant-loved products are all offered on Amazon right now, and available with fast, free shipping so you can stock up like the pros ahead of your next trip.

Aloha Collection Tote

“This company was actually started by a flight attendant,” notes Southern California-based flight attendant Hannah Bickert — so you know it has a smart design. “The super-cute waterproof bags and pouches are incredibly packable and designed to contain your wet swimsuit so you can take one last dip in the pool or quick surf before your flight and not have to wait for it to dry,” she says, calling them great for poolside phones or electronics that you don’t want to risk getting wet. “They’re also durable and washable!” Each features an interior zip pocket for organization plus an outside zipper pocket for small essentials. And they’re available in a range of 24 patterns.

TKEES Women's Serena Slide Sandal

These simple flat sandals are ultra-streamlined and lightweight (perfect for slipping into a tote), with a stylish, goes-with-everything look. The black slide features five parallel bands that form a single strap that encircles the base of the toes. “Packing light is my forté, so I love a basic slide that can be for walking around town, grabbing brunch, or dressing up for the evening,” Bickert says — and this versatile, compact slide is her top pick.

Boodlab Sleep Headphones

Taylor Swift may think jet lag is a choice . But most mere mortals — even flight attendants — do experience it and look for ways to combat it whether they’re working or traveling off duty. “Being a flight attendant means crazy hours and sometimes some serious jet lag,” says San Francisco-based flight attendant TJ Kizuka . So when off duty, he says, “I pop on my Bluetooth sleep mask and listen to sounds of the ocean to get some much-needed relaxation.”

Amazon Echo Show 5

“Traveling all around the world does have its perks — flight attendants have lots of stories to tell and even more pictures to share,” Kizuka says. “I love my Amazon Echo because not only can I check on my apartment when I’m away, [but] I can also share pictures from my latest adventures when I am home.” The latest model of Echo, this one has deeper bass and better voice clarity, an additional mic for a faster Alexa response, a faster processor, and a better screen for nighttime viewing.

Elefor Massage Gun

“Living in a household of flight attendants, this is a popular thing to have on hand,” Kizuka says. “Pushing heavy beverage carts and traversing across airports with heavy luggage can put a lot of stress on your body, and this massage gun helps with those flight attendant-related aches and pains.” This affordable massage gun has 10 different massage heads and a powerful motor that can bring up to 3,200 strikes per minute, and at 8 inches long and 1.8 pounds, it’s packable for working out the kinks that travel invariably triggers whether on the job or off duty.

Owala FreeSip Stainless Steel Water Bottle

A reusable water bottle is a must-have for travel — not to mention everyday use — to support both hydration and sustainability. This one comes in 22 color combinations that Bickert calls “darling,” and she loves that it has both a straw for sipping and an opening for gulping on the go.

Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask

Dehydrating plane air is a major concern for flight attendants whether they’re on the clock or off-duty traveling. And this leave-on lip mask works while you sleep to banish chafing and maximize hydration. The formulation includes vitamin C, a berry mix complex rich in antioxidants, plus coconut oil, shea butter, and murumuru seed butter for major moisture. “Replenishing moisture is my No. 1 goal with beauty in the sky, and this lip sleeping mask is a favorite,” Bickert says. “Waking up to hydrated lips is a luxury.”

Coslus Electric Face Scrubber

“You would be surprised how a pressurized airplane cabin can wreak havoc on your skin,” Kizuka says. To keep mine fresh and blemish-free when I’m off duty, I use my battery-powered facial cleansing brush to exfoliate and give my skin some extra TLC.” This popular version has more than 10,000 Amazon ratings and comes with seven brush heads for a thoroughly clean and exfoliated routine.

Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray

Bickert swears by this fan-favorite hair product for effortlessly zhushing up her look amid off-duty travels (and on-duty trips, too). “This dry shampoo meets texture spray is essential for a midday refresh,” she says. The formulation is invisible, and at 2.2 ounces, the travel-size version easily clears TSA restrictions.

Lume Acidified Deodorant Wipes (Pack of 3)

Travel can be taxing and unglamorous, but these deodorant wipes help forgive a lot: They’re clinically proven to control body odor for 24 hours. And, developed by a gynecologist, they’re aluminum-free, hypoallergenic, and safe for any odor-prone areas. “Throw these in your bag and you can seamlessly transition from a busy flight to the summer heat and on to dinner or a night out without skipping a beat,” Bickert says. This ample set comes with three 45-wipe packs.

Touchland Glow Mist Hand Sanitizer

Bickert explains that all flight attendants have hand sanitizer in their aprons to keep germs at bay while at work — and they stay stocked up for off-duty travels, too. Bickert says, “there’s no going back” after she tried this elevated version of a compact hand sanitizer spray, which both “sanitizes and revitalizes” in heavenly scents.

St.Tropez Gradual Tan Firming Lotion

Bickert says this lotion keeps her glowing look “alive and well in the most natural-looking way.” Plus, it smells great and feels good on: “I love anything with firming properties at this stage of life,” she says as an on-the-go mom of three small kids. To use it, apply daily or as desired in place of regular body moisturizer. (Just don’t forget to wash your hands after use.)
