6 Travel Scams to Avoid

Aarp's fraud watch team warns you of cons that could ruin your getaway plans.

Airbnb app showing traditional courtyard home for rent in Beijing China

Sari Harrar,

Patricia Frolander, 78, walked into the Rapid City, South Dakota, Regional Airport last year with a ticket to St. George, Utah. She was on her way to visit a dear friend — but never got there. An airline employee broke the bad news: Her $398 ticket was for a nonexistent flight.

"I booked my trip through a travel agency website that looked legitimate,” Frolander says. The only red flag: fine print on Page 5 of her ticket saying she couldn't contest the reservation once purchased. “When my granddaughter checked online, she traced the website to a travel agency with a very bad history with the Better Business Bureau,” Frolander says. Her credit card company investigated and agreed to refund her money.

Scammers are constantly looking for ways to part people from their money, and, unfortunately, have found lucrative targets among travelers .

Here's how experts say you can avoid six current travel scams.

1. Free or rock-bottom deals

Phone calls, emails and postcards with enticing travel offers are tempting, but a deal that's way under the value of a trip — like five nights in a hotel plus airfare to Maui for $200 — means it's probably a scam, says Amy Nofziger, AARP's anti-fraud expert.

Avoid this scam: Simply walk away from any deal that seems too good to be true. And if a company asks you to pay with a prepaid gift card instead of a credit card or debit card, it's a scam, Nofziger says. Always work with a trusted travel agency or company that has a long, proven history of offering travel opportunities, she says.

2. Rental-car cons

Scammers set up phony customer service numbers online that look just like those of major rental-car companies. When you call, they take your money and personal information, then leave you stranded.

AARP® Dental Insurance Plan administered by Delta Dental Insurance Company

Dental insurance plans for members and their families

Avoid this scam: Before you call or click to reserve a car, verify that you're calling the real customer service department, or that you're on a legitimate company website.

3. Third-party websites for TSA PreCheck  and Global Entry programs

Look-alike websites are popping up and claiming to be able to help you renew or enroll in the  U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) PreCheck or the U.S. Customs and Border Protection's Global Entry program , which speed you through airport security for a fee. But these sites are trying to con you out of money and personal information.

Avoid this scam:  Travelers interested in enrolling in or renewing TSA PreCheck should start the process by going to the official government website, tsa.gov .

4. Disappearing vacation rentals

Scammers capitalize on the popularity of vacation properties rented out on legit sites like Airbnb and Vrbo (Vacation Rentals by Owner) by offering — online or via social media — properties that don't exist, don't belong to them or don't measure up to the gorgeous photos.

Avoid this scam:  Keep all of your interactions with a vacation property's owners on the website of legitimate companies. A request to take your conversation off the site is a sign of a likely scam. If a property has few reviews or seems too good to be true, search the address online, or check it on Google Maps.

5. Airport and hotel Wi-Fi hacks

Connecting to public Wi-Fi gives savvy hackers easy access to your personal information.

Avoid this scam:  Use your smartphone's hot spot to connect to the internet more securely. Or invest in a virtual private network (VPN), a service that encrypts your data to keep unscrupulous hackers from stealing sensitive information online. A VPN costs about $30 to $100 per year.

6. Tourist visa scams

Popular destinations (Australia, India, Vietnam, for instance) require visas from American visitors, and scammers have stepped in, creating third-party websites promising to get tourists their visas quickly, for a fee. They not only request money to expedite your visa, they request personal information valuable to criminals for identity theft. Some travelers who’ve used these sites have ended up with a fake visa — or no visa at all.

Avoid this scam : Get your tourist visa directly from the website of your destination country. (You’ll find links at https://travel.state.gov .) Many countries have turnaround times as short as one day for electronic visas, and some even allow visitors to procure them upon arrival at the airport or border crossing.

Traveling can be exciting but also comes with uncertainties and risks. But if you’ve covered your trip with travel insurance, you’ve got a lifeline in your pocket: the travel insurance company’s 24-hour travel assistance hotline.

Whether you’re just planning your trip or already at your destination, a travel insurance 24/7 assistance hotline can offer support and peace of mind wherever you are and at all hours. From offering destination information and local emergency services contacts to coordinating medical evacuations and keeping your loved ones updated, you can get help from the hotline for various travel needs.

Let’s explore how 24-hour travel assistance hotlines can help with your safety and well-being on your next trip.

A 24/7 travel assistance hotline is a service travel insurance companies provide to support travelers. You can get around-the-clock help wherever you are , and support is available whether you’re in the planning stages, on your trip, or after you’ve come back home.

You can use a 24-hour travel assistance hotline for travel-related information and support, including destination information and travel advisories, local emergency services contacts, and assistance with travel arrangements and changes.

As you plan your trip, you can get visa and passport information from the hotline, travel vaccination recommendations, or information about traveling with special needs or pets. And you can get immediate help for emergencies on your trip by contacting the assistance hotline.

Travel can be unpredictable, and getting support any time of day or night can be helpful if plans go awry. Traveling exposes you to risks and uncertainties, including medical emergencies, accidents, lost belongings, or travel disruptions. A 24-hour safety net can save the day.

Emergencies can happen at any time, and with 24/7 travel support, you can get immediate assistance when you need it most. Timing is particularly important when on international trips, as you’re likely traveling in a different time zone than where your home is located. With 24/7 support, you can get service around the clock regardless of location and time zone differences.

If you experience a medical emergency during travel, a 24/7 customer service hotline from your travel insurance company can play a vital role in assistance and support by promptly contacting local emergency services for you. You can get guidance and transportation to nearby medical facilities, along with support for admittance and payments.

Women traveler experiencing stomach pain

The hotline can also coordinate medical evacuations when necessary by working closely with medical professionals and handling the transportation logistics. Finally, the hotline can keep your family informed every step of the way.

Take advantage of multilingual services if you’re traveling to a country where you’re not fluent in the local language. The 24/7 hotline can help you communicate with local authorities or medical personnel.

You can use the 24/7 travel assistance hotline for multiple services, including:

  • Communication: If you run into trouble on your trip, the 24-hour travel hotline can facilitate communication and updates to your family and friends so you don’t have to manage it while facing challenges with travel and time zones.
  • Concierge Services: Some travel insurance plans offer concierge services, such as event ticketing, restaurant reservations, and ground transportation coordination.
  • Destination Information and Advisories: Get information about your destination, including local customs, cultural norms, weather conditions, safety advisories, and travel alerts or warnings issued by authorities.
  • Document Assistance: If your important documents (such as a passport) are lost or stolen, a 24-hour travel assistance hotline can help you report the loss and obtain replacement documents. They can walk you through the procedures and offer details on reaching the nearest embassy or consulate where you can get help.
  • Emergency Cash Advance: You may get access to emergency funds or financial assistance if your wallet or credit cards are lost or stolen.
  • Emergency Evacuation and Repatriation: If you need to be repatriated due to a medical emergency or other critical situation, the travel assistance hotline can arrange for medical evacuation and transportation.
  • Language and Cultural Barriers: You may find it challenging to seek local assistance if you don’t understand your destination’s language or cultural norms. Your 24-hour travel assistance hotline may offer multilingual support so you can communicate effectively and get the help you need in your preferred language.
  • Legal and Consular Support: Travel assistance hotlines can offer guidance on legal resources and point you to the nearest embassy or consulate.
  • Local Emergency Services Contacts: Obtain contact information for local emergency services, including phone numbers for police, hospitals, ambulances, and other emergency responders so you can get local help quickly.
  • Medical Assistance: A 24-hour travel assistance hotline can help you connect with health care providers, arrange a medical evacuation, and communicate with your emergency contacts and family.
  • Policy Guidance: If you have questions about your coverage or claims, you can use 24/7 customer service to get clarification.
  • Pre-Trip Assistance and Planning: With travel assistance, you can get information about visa and passport validity, including visa applications and entry requirements, so you’re prepared for your trip. You can also find out about travel vaccination recommendations and health precautions. And if you’re traveling with a pet or a traveler who needs special accommodations, you can get guidance from travel assistance on airline policies, pet regulations, and accessible travel options.
  • Prescription Replacement: If you lose medication or glasses, the 24/7 assistance hotline could help you get a refill or replacement.
  • Travel Disruptions: Whether you need to rebook flights or reschedule accommodations, a 24-hour travel assistance line can help you alter your itinerary with minimal disruption if unforeseen circumstances arise.

It’s important to know what you’re covered for. Before you travel, review your travel insurance policy to understand coverage limits, exclusions, and requirements for making claims.

Examples of 24/7 Customer Service Hotline Assistance

passport on US map

Let’s explore some scenarios in which your travel insurance’s 24/7 hotline can help (though coverage and benefits may depend on your specific policy):

Say you’re traveling in Southeast Asia and break a leg. You require immediate medical attention but face language barriers and have limited access to quality health care. A 24/7 travel insurance representative can contact local medical facilities and arrange for an ambulance to transport you to the nearest hospital. They can also keep your family at home up to date on your condition. The representative should also be able to detail the travel insurance policy’s coverage for ambulance transportation and medical care.

You arrive at the airport ready to catch a flight home from a foreign country and discover that your bag with your passport and other travel documents is missing. You can call the 24/7 travel insurance hotline to get help reporting the loss to the local authorities and get connected with the embassy so you can get temporary travel documents. The insurance company can also help rebook you on a different flight once you receive the proper documentation.

Your Caribbean vacation is derailed by a severe hurricane that closes the airport. Unable to return home, you have to ride out the storm. You contact the 24/7 hotline from your travel insurance company, and a representative advises you on a safe evacuation zone with emergency accommodations while keeping your family at home updated. After the storm, the travel insurance company organizes your rescheduled flights and covers your additional accommodation expenses.

While hiking in a remote area of South America, you suffer a serious fall and are admitted to a local hospital. The medical facilities are limited, and your needed treatment isn’t available. Your travel insurance company’s 24/7 customer service hotline works with the attending medical professionals to assess your condition and arranges for an air ambulance with medical personnel to transport you safely back home. The travel insurance company covers your emergency medical care in South America and the cost of emergency medical repatriation.

Most travel assistance hotlines are available through phone, email, and chat , so you can seek help wherever and whenever needed. First, save the hotline’s contact information on your phone and write it down in case you lose your phone.

Call the 24/7 travel assistance hotline in an emergency to connect with a representative who can help immediately. For non-urgent help, you can use email or chat support.

Dealing with language barriers? Often, 24/7 travel assistance hotlines provide multilingual support . The hotline’s multilingual representatives can help you communicate with local authorities or medical care so your needs are clearly understood.

Whenever you contact the 24/7 travel assistance hotline, share as much relevant information as possible . For example, provide your location, specific issue, and important travel itinerary details. These details can help the customer service team assess your situation accurately and offer appropriate assistance. You should report all incidents promptly and accurately, particularly theft, accidents, or illness.

While a 24/7 travel assistance hotline can be a lifeline in a travel emergency, understand there are limitations to its services. You may not have access to immediate on-the-ground help, like during a severe medical emergency, but the assistance hotline will direct you to the right place for help or attempt to connect you with local emergency services.

Save emergency contacts offline in case your phone runs out of battery or gets lost.

Before you travel, review your travel insurance policy to understand your coverage and how it works. Travel assistance services can vary depending on the provider and plan, so knowing the details is good.

Understand the limits and exclusions of your policy. For example, you might be covered for an injury from a walk in the park but not for a challenging hike up a mountain. Or, your medical expenses may exceed the limit covered by your policy.

These are the phone numbers of 24/7 hotlines for popular travel insurance companies:

A 24-hour travel assistance hotline is a crucial asset for any traveler, offering help just a tap or phone call away no matter where you are or at what time you’re calling. You can get a wide range of services from your travel insurance company’s 24/7 hotline, including emergency support, destination information, and help with travel disruptions. And it’s especially helpful when traveling in unfamiliar areas where you may face a language barrier.

Too Good to be true? It isn't true !!

Wish there was a zero or a negative stars to use. I have received at least 5 calls from this same company each week. I've listened to their 'speil' because I'm amused at how they proport how I got the points (never took a time share tour nor have I ever owned a timeshare...but I have $1500 worth of points. Just now I googled their reviews and saw that there were few positive reviews from people who have dealt with them. I suspect that the few that were good were from paid reviewers. There is no way that they could give me 2 free 7 day, 6 night vacations plus air fair 4 days and 3 nights PLUS a 7 day cruise with air fare for $399 per person.

Vivian was Great!

Vivian was able to quickly help with a trip that was booked and immediately needed to be cancelled due to a sick friend that could no longer attend. I had originally read a bad review and was so concerned I wouldn’t be able to get a refund for a ticket that was just booked. Vivian was very patient and able to help refund the ticket that had only been booked an hour before. So thankful for their quick action and ability to help. Would recommend Vivian to anyone working with this company!

A total scam

Somehow when you try to call airlines or third party travel agents people from this entity reply. I bought my tickets through Smart Fares - maybe they are the same people. We were asked to change our booking ( to another longer flight) because according to them the original flight was not confirmed. They charged $100 extra for this change. When I later checked the rebooked flight was $100 cheaper than the rebooked flight. I wanted to cancel the booking all together but I was told I would loose $200 in fees. In retrospect i should have called the airline directly....

Date of experience : February 15, 2023

Absolute scam. Don't book with these swindlers!

Absolute scam. Don't book with these swindlers! They will tell you that you will receive your ticket within 2 hours. Then the next day they tell you the ticket price got more expensive during the booking process and they couldn't issue the ticket. But if you pay a little extra you will have your ticket within 2 hours, guaranteed. Spoiler alert: You won't. Can't believe I fell for this twice. In the end I even got a cheaper fare by calling the airline directly. Waiting for a refund now (supposedly within a week).

Zero stars should be an option

Zero stars should be an option. Bunch of scammers. Claiming they will refund and saying they will escalate claims, meanwhile almost two years later no refund, just auto responses that my claim has been escalated and will be looked into.

They will steal your card information. They are fraud please save your self a head ache and do not use this company. They are scam.

Scam site. Absolute nightmare- essentially took £150 for a booking they didn't honour. No matter how much you think you're going to save, it absolutely is not worth it- just read these reviews. Thieves and scammers.

Total scam don’t book ur flight from them .

The worse travel agency I ever deal with took my $11,000 from my bank and never issued me flight and I been calling them so many times and everytime they and answer and explained to them about what happened they hang up on me totally disrespectful. They said they will give me refund within 5 days and I been waiting for months no answer at all . I called my credit card company and disputed the charge which it will take 90 days to get refund . I got scammed from there please don’t fall what they say , I rather you guys get ticket from actual airline and pay more than dealing with this stupid people . Most of the employees are from India .

Date of experience : August 17, 2022

I had a bad experience with the…

I had a bad experience with the company,I bought a ticket just with one connection and they sold me something very different. I was trying to connect with them and they never responded to me. I won’t recommend buy flight tickets with them.

Date of experience : March 15, 2023

never buy tickets from them they are scammers! they first offer and sell you tickets at the same price, then after a while they say that the airline canceled the flight and extort you to pay another half of the cost. At the same time, no one will notify you of the changes and they will refuse to return the money to you, speaking arrogantly, they will manipulate and offer a discount just to deceive you again. I returned my money through the bank, but they still have the audacity to write why I made a refund and continue to agree to their fraud!! never deal with this fake company.

Date of experience : June 20, 2022

I wish that I did my research before…

I wish that I did my research before booking tickets on this website. I thought that SmartFare would be a reputable company since they were advertised on Kayak.com. However, after booking my airline tickets and waiting for a confirmation to fly the next day, I realize that this company was fraudulent. They have the worst customer service representatives. Each time I asked questions about my itinerary, the representative would hang up the phone on me. Why are they able to continue to run this scam on people? How haven’t they been shut down? I am so disappointed that this could even happen to me. Wow!! I pray that they will be punished for preying on people. This is a real scam that should not go unnoticed. Please do your research before purchasing anything.

Date of experience : August 13, 2022

Warning If you don't want to loose your money. Don't buy flight ticket ever from 'traveler help desk'. Completly Scam! I talked to a representative named Sebastian who need to give me refund Never answerd my emails. So be very careful, do not deal with this SCAM company!

Date of experience : August 02, 2021

Do not recommend

Do not recommend, better to buy directly from Air Canada or other airline. Travelerhelpdesk will make sure they take your money for any change. Every change will cost you minimum 100$-200$ usd per person unless you ask for a discount and the manager offers 50$ off the scam fare change fee given (even though its covid period and airlines waived fees). They say the fare difference is covered by their travel insurance offered, but read the insurance fine print and it states that it is not covered under government travel restrictions. Anyway, never again, you may pay a bit more by booking with Air Canada directly but if you need to cancel or change, you are sure they will act with professionalism. Update: After writting this review, a manager from Travelerhelpdesk did a good job and reimbursed the charges. I appreciated the effort.

This company's customer service provided me with wrongful information. They sold me an extension of one year to postpone my travel after the covid19 pandemic, because I was unable to travel to the US and to use the tickets that I bought in 2020 (the border of my country being closed, it was impossible to do it). This company asked me for a huge sum of money for an en extension. It turns out that what I was sold was not true: I lost my ticket, they refused to refund me the money that I paid for a non-existant credit. In other words: I got scammed.

Worst company to deal with.

Worst company to deal with. I booked my tickets via Aeroflot airline using Travelerhelpdesk but had to cancel the flight in the last minute. The tickets were non-refundable but Travelhelpdesk offered an option to pay extra $320 to keep the ticket credit available for future trips and issued the 'future credit' amounting to USD 413 per passanger. However, when I called them to book a new ticket (which costs $293 on the airline website) using my 'future credit', they told me to pay $254 more to cover the 'fare change' fee and the rebooking fee. It's nonsense!

I hope this helps some of you

I hope this helps some of you. If you have been scammed by this company or SmartFares.com, make sure you do not complete the cancellation process. They will charge you and deduct "fees" at an exorbitant rate. File a complaint with Better Business Bureau. I did and it helped. I got a full refund.

The company is not reliable after…

The company is not reliable after buying a ticket they tell you to wait within 24hrs for you to get the confirmation ticket,.. But not really it is been another day 24hrs has gone but no confirmation the final confirmation and the service itself that says working 24/7 s a lie they don't work for that much. Everything they tell you is all lies.!!!!

The worst company ever

The worst company ever. Do not buy from them ever. I repeat DO NOT BUY FROM THEM! I had purchased a ticket costing up to $1500, but the flight got cancelled due to covid. The airlines were not flying and I explained the situation to them. I was not given an email or notification of the cancelled flight and ended up having to call up multiple companies. The staff on call were rude, distrustful and did not offer any assistance proceeding to just hang up on me and not giving a refund. Never have i ever dealt with a company this unprofessional. Straight up a scam company and surprised they have not been flagged for fraudulent claims. If I could give 0/5 I would......

Traveler Help Desk Sucks

Worst ever travel company to ever exist. I had credit with them that was set to expire after a year. The credit has now lapsed and now I cant use it at all. It's all gone. A courtesy reminder would of been great as it has been a whole year since these fares were looked at so that I can organise to pay to renew it again. But no, not a single email, communication or peep, such a stupid business that doesnt care for there customers. Such an absolute waste of time and money this company!!!!

I had a good experience

I actually had a good experience with Travelerhelpdesk.com I booked a flight in a rush after a family emergency before doing the research I usually do on companies I have not used before. After booking the flight through Travelerhelpdesk (THD) - (who had the best prices by over $100), I looked them up and saw scathing reviews on multiple websites and forums. I thought I had been scammed. I called my credit card company, but they could not do anything because the charge had not gone through yet. I then booked directly with the airline for the same flight, but much higher price because I needed to get on that flight. I also called the airline regarding the THD booking, and they confirmed that a reservation hold had been placed, but no payment had been made. I planned to dispute the charges from THD with my credit card company when they came through, or when THD called me the next day to tell me the prices had gone up and they were not able to lock in my flight. However, my flight was ticketed through THD, as verified by a call to the airlines, and I was able to cancel the flight I booked directly through the airlines. So in my case, THD got me the best deal, and they were very professional and helpful over the phone the two times I called. Maybe I got lucky, or they are trying to change their reputation.

A travel management platform is a software solution designed to help businesses and organizations manage their corporate travel, expenses, and bookings. It is a comprehensive tool that enables travel managers and employees to streamline travel processes, control costs, and enhance overall travel experiences.

A travel management platform integrates various functionalities such as travel booking, expense management, itinerary management, and travel risk management into a single platform. It allows businesses to automate travel processes, track expenses, manage bookings, and provide real-time updates and reimbursements to travelers.

Using a travel management platform offers several benefits, including efficient travel booking processes, cost control, and savings, improved visibility into travel spend, policy compliance, enhanced traveler safety, and simplified expense management. It empowers travel managers with the tools they need to effectively manage corporate travel and achieve optimal outcomes.

A good travel management platform should have features such as online booking tools, itinerary management, expense tracking, real-time updates, travel risk management capabilities, mobile app accessibility, and integration with other travel-related systems. It should also offer customizable travel policies, reporting, and analytics, and provide support for business travelers on the go.

A travel management platform can benefit a business by reducing manual tasks, saving time and effort, improving cost control, ensuring policy compliance, enhancing travel management efficiency, increasing traveler satisfaction, and providing valuable data and insights for decision-making purposes. It can also help businesses negotiate better deals with travel vendors and streamline the travel booking process.

Corporate travel managers are responsible for ensuring that their company's travel program is defined, implemented, and complied with. Travel managers may be involved with creating a corporate travel policy, and help ensure that employees book travel that is compliant with that policy. Once employees hit the road, travel managers help with travel safety and the submission of travel expense data.

A corporate travel program allows employees to travel on behalf of the company. This may be to close more businesses, serve existing customers, develop partnerships, or expand market coverage. When developing a travel program, your company should define how business travel will align with your existing business strategy.

Travel management companies (TMCs) may make money through a commission earned on travel bookings or by charging a booking fee. Some even charge their customers a fee for speaking to customer support. Fortunately, a great TMC saves clients money through negotiated discounts and a reduction in the time it takes to book and reschedule. This should more than cover the cost of using a TMC.

Corporate travel is typically booked through a business travel management platform that allows business travelers to search for flights, hotels, rental cars, and more. It's ad hassle-free way to book travel for business because the company travel policies and exclusive corporate travel rates are already built in.

Travel agents are ready to assist you with travel bookings, changes, and cancellations. They can search inventory across multiple suppliers through a global distribution system (GDS), allowing them to find the best business travel options quickly. Travel agents typically field support requests via phone, email, and in-app chat. They can also pull up airline and hotel policies to clarify the options when a traveler is considering changing their business travel itinerary.
