How to Plan the Perfect Colorado Springs Getaway — at Any Time of Year

Here's what you need to know before visiting Colorado Springs, including what to do, where to stay, and more.

travel to colorado springs

Colorado Springs is a place best described as the Goldilocks of travel destinations. It’s Colorado’s second-largest city but by no means feels crowded. It’s far enough away from the state’s central hub in Denver but isn’t inaccessible. It’s got plenty of green spaces but also has an urban center where you’ll find luxe accommodations and restaurants worthy of your reservation. Colorado Springs is a place where you can do it all, with something for every kind of traveler. It’s also a place filled with immense beauty, making it little surprise that poet Katharine Lee Bates wrote “America the Beautiful” while vacationing in Colorado Springs in 1883. Here’s what you need to know to plan your own awe-inspiring getaway to Colorado Springs.

What to Know About Colorado Springs

Colorado Springs is one hour south of Denver, at the eastern foot of the Rocky Mountains, and the city sits at an elevation of 6,035 feet.

The weather in Colorado Springs can vary greatly depending on the season. According to WeatherSpark , the warm season in Colorado Springs is typically between early June to mid-September, when the average daily high hits about or above 76°F. The hottest month is July, with an average high of 84°F.

In contrast, WeatherSpark reports that the cold season is typically experienced from late November to early March when the average daily high rarely hits past 51°F. The coldest month is December.

When visiting Colorado Springs, it’s a good idea to rent a car. The entire city is 195 square miles, and some of its most well-known attractions are only accessible by car. Enterprise, Budget, Avis, and several other car rental companies operate in the area, making finding a ride a snap.

When to Go to Colorado Springs

The best time to go to Colorado Springs depends on what kind of fun you’re after. The spring offers visitors the chance to check out the rebirth of the destination. As the snow melts, it gives way to verdant landscapes and a few wildflowers poking out of the earth. Summer offers warmer temperatures that make for ideal days spent on the hiking and mountain biking trails, while fall provides visitors the opportunity to go leaf peeping in some of the best fall foliage landscapes in America. And in winter, visitors can plan trips to nearby ski resorts, with several world-class destinations like Breckenridge and Winter Park within a two-hour drive.

The town also hosts several stellar festivals and races throughout the year, including the Pikes Peak Marathon in September and the Cripple Creek Ice Festival in the winter, when ice sculptors come out in droves to show off their coolest creations for the whole town to see. So really, there’s no bad time to visit. Just times that may be better for you and your travel desires.

Things to Do in Colorado Springs

See the U.S. Air Force Academy and Chapel

The chapel is closed for renovations through at least 2027. However, we wanted to still note the attraction for both your future trips and its importance to the area. The chapel is a stunning architectural treat soaring some 150 feet into the air. The all-faith chapel serves every religion to ensure the cadets at the academy can all come to worship. Designed by Walter A. Netsch Jr. of Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill of Chicago, the chapel is made of aluminum, glass, and steel and features 17 spires. The chapel website notes that there is “no significance to this number,” but rather that the original designs were too expensive. Thus the number of spires fell to 17 to keep the cost to a minimum. Come catch a glimpse of it from the outside, and stay tuned to its website for opening date details .

Hike Pikes Peak

Get your heart racing in more ways than one with a hike up Pikes Peak. The 13.5-mile Barr Trail will take you to the top of the peak, which clocks out at 14,115 feet in elevation. Though difficult, the hike rewards those who make it to the top with a view that just won’t quit. Not feeling the hike? You can still reach the summit by driving up the 19-mile Pikes Peak Highway , making the vista accessible to everyone.

Ride the Broadmoor Cog Railway Train

One more way to experience the gorgeous Pikes Peak area is by hopping aboard the Broadmoor Cog Railway Train . The train takes guests on a nine-mile journey more than 14,000 feet above sea level through Ruxton Creek in Englemann Canyon and Deer Park, with views of Minnehaha Falls along the way. The best part is that every seat is the best seat on the train, thanks to the massive picture windows that allow guests to soak it all in. Grab a snack — like a glazed donut in the winter or a popsicle in the summer — at the depot before the ride up.

Explore Garden of the Gods Park

Hang on, we aren’t done talking about the great outdoors in Colorado Springs just yet. During your stay, take a little time to visit Garden of the Gods Park , which comes with 15 miles of varied hiking trails, including the 1.5-mile Perkins Central Garden Trail, a paved trail ideal for those utilizing wheelchairs or strollers. Guests here really are spoiled with choice when it comes to how they see the park, including via Jeep tours, e-bike excursions, and even horseback. Visitors can also get a bird’s eye view by taking a rock climbing lesson with a local outfitter. While hanging off the side of a cliff, try to spot a few of the park's famed birds , including the red-tailed hawk, prairie falcon, and broad-tailed hummingbird.

The Broadmoor

Treat yourself to something special with a luxury stay at The Broadmoor . The more than 100-year-old property is like a mini city with several cafes and restaurants to choose from, two world-class golf courses to play, a full-service spa, and accommodations ranging from traditional hotel rooms to suites, cottages, an estate house, and brownstones that are large enough for entire extended families and even boast their own three-car garages. The hotel also offers a range of wilderness accommodations, including its Ranch at Emerald Valley , an all-inclusive getaway that has 13 perfectly appointed cabins surrounded by miles of hiking and biking trails.

Garden of the Gods Resort and Club

As the Garden of the Gods Resort and Club website boldly states, here, “recreation and relaxation reign supreme.” The resort’s 56 rooms all offer some of the most stunning views in Colorado Springs — including views of Pikes Peak and Garden of the Gods. The resort also offers a comprehensive wellness program, including health assessments and wellness concierge treatments, alongside more traditional spa services like massages and facials.

The Mining Exchange, A Wyndham Grand Hotel

Want a more centrally located stay? Check into The Mining Exchange, A Wyndham Grand Hotel located in the center of downtown Colorado Springs. The granite building was originally built as the stock exchange for local mining companies and pays homage to its past with little touches like its antique piano in the lobby and its leather-clad meeting spaces, which guests can use for their next corporate event. The hotel also has a spacious spa so guests can choose to unwind their way after a long day of either work or play.

How to Get to Colorado Springs

Getting to Colorado Springs is relatively easy. Visitors can fly into Denver International Airport and rent a car from here for the 90-minute drive. The town also has a regional airport , serviced by Southwest and United, which both offer non-stop service to and from destinations like Los Angeles, San Diego, Chicago, Dallas, Phoenix, and Salt Lake City.

Best Times To Visit Colorado Springs

The best times to visit Colorado Springs are from March to May and from September to October. That's when you'll find slightly cooler (yet still comfortable) temperatures as well as fewer crowds and bargain rates. Another perk for fall visitors: the foliage. Expect to see the surrounding mountains speckled with bright reds, oranges and yellows. Warm summer weather draws visitors in droves, leading to price hikes at hotels and congested attractions .

The outdoors beckons in the fall, and other great tips for when to visit Colorado Springs

In Colorado Springs , beautiful mountain vistas, awesome outdoor adventures and interesting cultural experiences are available year round . The visitors center at the Garden of the Gods offers an interactive way to see a 365-day time lapse of the famous rock formations. Whether you choose to visit in the summer when the landscapes are green, in the fall when the foliage is at its prime, or in the winter when everything is under a blanket of snow, you won’t be disappointed.

Visiting  Colorado is always in season, but here are our tips on when to go to Colorado Springs.

High Season: June - August

Best time for festivals

During the high season, you’ll enjoy scenic green landscapes and wildflowers during the long days of summer. You’ll also join plenty of tourists on a similar mission. Avoid the crowds at popular attractions by adventuring early in the day and late in the afternoon. The temperatures are milder and the sunlight is better for photos at those times. There are a handful of festive events to attend Memorial Day through Labor Day, so plan accordingly.

Shoulder Season: September - October

Best time for leaf peepin’

Fall is a favorite time for exploring outdoors. The weather is comfortable, the crowds are considerably less, and the scenery is stunning. Take a drive and admire the fall colors on the way to Royal Gorge Canyon or while cruising up Pikes Peak . Or take a hike to see the foliage up close. Note the timing varies slightly from year to year, especially at different elevations, so keep an eye on the fall color forecast .

The US Olympic and Paralympic Museum

Low Season: November to February

Best time for museums and indoor fun

The quietest months for tourism are usually after the holidays, in January and February. There are plenty of interesting museums and a few castles to explore to keep warm indoors, including the Pioneers Museum , the United States Olympic & Paralympic Museum , and the ProRodeo Hall of Fame . But if you think it’s too cold to do anything outside, think again. Locals and visitors still enjoy the outdoors, even when there is snow on the ground, because of the abundant sunshine and mild temps. Most attractions in Colorado Springs are open all year – including the drive to Pikes Peak, weather permitting.

Shoulder Season: March - May

Best time to have the place to yourself

Things start to ramp up again as families arrive for spring break during various weeks in March. The warmer weather makes outdoor activities more enjoyable, and the budding flowers and green leaves give the city and scenery more charm. The crowds are less of a concern during the shoulder season.

The crowds start to thin out as the holidays wind down. But what do we do with all that leftover fruitcake? Manitou Springs has an entire festival where it’s OK to let the fruitcake fly. Competitions at the festival are judged based on distance, accuracy, speed and balance. Temperatures are usually their lowest this time of year, around 18℉ - 45℉, but this fest will surely warm you up.  Hotel prices are generally at their  lowest as well.

Key event: The Great Fruitcake Toss

Cripple Creek Ice Festival

Visitors will find plenty of museums to enjoy as a respite from the winter chill. January, February and March are generally the snowiest months of the year. A major event in February is the Cripple Creek Ice Festival, where ice carvers break out their chainsaws to make large blocks into art; it’s the perfect celebration of the season. Meanwhile, in Manitou Springs, you can get into the spirit of Carnivale and sample homemade gumbo for just 75 cents.

Key events: Cripple Creek Ice Festival , Bighorn Sheep Day , Mumbo Jumbo Gumbo Cook-Off & Carnivale parade

As the weather warms up to the 50s with still occasional snowstorms, families return to town to celebrate spring break and attend the Saint Patrick’s Day Parade downtown. And Taste of Pikes Peak gets underway with over 80 restaurants and vendors coming together to serve up yummy bites.

Key events: Taste of Pikes Peak , St. Patrick’s Day Festival

First Friday Art Walks resume in Old Colorado City, offering visitors an opportunity to browse the galleries and meet the artists. Pikes Peak Restaurant Week is also a great excuse to try new restaurants with fixed-price discounted menus.

Key events: Art Walks in Old Colorado City  (April - December), Spring Wine Extravaganza , Pikes Peak Restaurant Week

Spring is a beautiful time, as we enjoy May flowers - though there has been an occasional blizzard. Temps are generally in the 40s - 70s, with the cheapest hotel prices about 17% less than average. Late May, the town kicks off summer early with Territory Days in Old Colorado City Memorial Day Weekend, known as Colorado’s largest street fair for more than 40 years.

Key events: Territory Days , Cañon City Music & Blossom Festival , Pikes Peak Birding & Nature Festival , MeadowGrass Music Festival

Pikes Peak International Hill Climb

June is generally a busy month in Colorado Springs, as visitor numbers climb and hotel prices soar - an average of 53%, the highest prices all year. While local events like the Old Colorado City Farmers Market get underway, a major event comes to town: the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. Racers speed their vehicles to the top as fast as they can. (The record is under eight minutes!) Spectators can grab a ticket and camping permit to get close to all the action.

Key events: Pikes Peak International Hill Climb , Starlight Spectacular ,  Top of the World Rodeo , Colorado Springs Western Street Breakfast ,  Woodland Music Series , Old Colorado City Farmers Market

With summer in full swing, the 4th of July Symphony in the Park draws crowds to Memorial Park, along with several other community events. July tends to be the hottest month, with the average temps around 56℉ - 86℉, so cool down and go whitewater rafting in Cañon City. Stop by the Whitewater Festival, which promises boats, bands and beer.

Key events: 4th of July Symphony in the Park , Pikes Peak Or Bust Rodeo , Royal Gorge Whitewater Festival , Rocky Mountain State Games

If auto racing up Pikes Peak Highway wasn’t enough for you in June, how about running to the top? In August, the Pikes Peak Marathon + Ascent challenges runners to go 13.1 miles to the top of Barr Trail then descend to the start. Or maybe watching donkey races at Derby Days in Cripple Creek might be more your speed.

Key events: Donkey Derby Days , Ride for the Brand , Vino & Notes Wine Festival , Hot Rod Rock & Rumble , Mountain Arts Festival , Pikes Peak Marathon , Manitou Springs Colorado Wine Festival , La Vida

Labor Day Lift Off

The summer season ends with a bang when over 70 hot-air balloons launch from Memorial Park as part of the Labor Day Lift Off. Temperatures start to drop and so do the crowds. Photographers will enjoy snapping pretty scenery as the mountains turn from green to gold.

Key events: Labor Day Lift Off , Pikes Peak Airstrip Attack , Oktoberfest , Royal 50 MTB Bike Race

October temps are generally in the upper 60s and as the month winds down, there are plenty of festivities to celebrate Halloween. To warm up, you can watch teams race coffins – yes, coffins – down the mountain in Manitou Springs at the Emma Crawford Coffin Races. You gotta see it to believe it. Families will enjoy trick-or-treating and activities at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo and Royal Gorge Bridge.

Key events: Emma Crawford Coffin Races and Festival , Arts Month , Boo at the Zoo , Boo at the Bridge

While the weather is cool but not cold yet, November is a great time to take a breather and enjoy year-round attractions before the holidays. Or put on a bear suit for a 5k or 3K Bear Run through Bear Creek Regional Park.  Then, get a head start on holiday shopping on Small Business Saturday in Manitou Springs, which is filled with mom and pop shops.

Key event: Bear Creek Bear Run

December tends to be one of the coldest months of the year, with temps around 18℉ - 47℉. Hotel prices are generally low as well, though the holidays draw in a crowd. Families come to explore The North Pole - Santa’s Workshop , a vintage amusement park, and see the animals at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo’s Electric Safari. There are also special light displays at the Broadmoor hotel and Seven Falls, including a mega gingerbread display to get you in the holiday spirit.

Key events: Electric Safari , Holidays at the Broadmoor

Top 5 airlines flying to colorado springs.

Delta is one of the best airlines I have flown

Made the Atlanta to Pittsburgh trip many times, with Delta no issues

I always fly with Delta. My friends tell me their horror stories of flying with other airlines. I just smile and say, “You should fly Delta”

I'm a larger, athletic guy (6'2", 260lbs powerlifter) and I found the seats incredibly uncomfortable with minimal leg room, especially in a window seat. Now, I full understand that being smaller may change my view but even if I was 80lbs less, my legs would be the same size and I was sandwiched between my seat and the seat in front of me.

Horrible. This was not first class. This was a connecting flight whi h was late. My original flight never came. I hated the fact that delta gave me a connecting flight from New York to Orlando Florida. No meals and the television screens were not working. There wasn't even any power to charge your phones. This is NOT FIRST CLASS DELTA!!! Do better next time!

This flight was ridiculous. I had to have a connecting flight from New York to orlando Florida??? The flight left late and because it was a short flight there was no first class amenities. I had one alcohol drink. The flight crew was fine, but it sure did not feel like first class. Delta to me dropped the ball by giving me a connecting flight. By the time we got to Raleigh we would have missed the next flight. Lucky for me the flight never came so now I was stuck waiting for a later flight that came in late also.

Our flight was delayed in Atlanta. The staff could have gave us an explanation for the delay and how long it would be.

I liked the ease of checking in, luggage check in, wheel chair assistance, boarding and flight.

On my way home I had a layover. The flight from ATL to CLT was amended 5x while I was waiting. I could have driven home sooner. Overall from Dallas, Tx to Charlotte, NC I started my trip at 4:30pm, I didn’t get home until past midnight. I know things happen, but 5x to make me run back and forth in an airport from different terminals is excessive. I also upgraded to comfort + , I didn’t feel it was worth it. There was no benefit

Tight fit in middle seat but OK for short flight. Crew was more interested in talking to each other than helping passengers - strickingly dissappointing. DAB is a great airport. New Haven sucks! Excellent value for the .

Avelo is definitely a budget airline and you get what you pay for. The plane was packed and the seats were not particularly comfortable. Staff was very nice and both of our flights were on time. The one thing I wish I had known was that the staff does not show up at the airport desk to check your bags until two hours before the flight. We had a 4:30 flight and had to check out of our hotel at noon. Since we have lounge passes we planned to check our bag, go through security and hang out at the lounge until we had to board. But because we could not check our bag until 2:30, when the staff showed up, we could not go through security and access the lounge. Passengers with boarding passes and carry on luggage would not have this issue. I might fly Avelo again but would only do carry on or plan to get to the airport no sooner than two hours before check in. And I would not recommend a long flight on Avelo since there is no food or entertainment and the seats are not comfortable.

No food or entertainment, but flight very comfortable and on time.

Baggage claim was barbaric at Wilmington. I realize that this is a startup airline but if they hope to grow or even survive they need to upgrade this airport. There is no automated luggage carousel and at times you are not only fighting your fellow passengers to get to your bags but also passengers coming in from other flights who cross right in front of you

No frills, i.e., no drinks or snacks. One is charged for everything. The cost really adds up. The crew and flight attendants were excellent and very pleasant.

I always walk by a pallet of Avelo branded mini bottles of water on the tarmac, but I’ve never seen them in flight. Yup, not even water offered on a 3 hour flight. No wi-fi onboard. We just watch the flight crew on their phone for 3 hours every flight. At least a mid-flight trash pickup would be great. Better than my last flight, but they only could have gone up from there. Don’t use for business or ticketed vacation like Disney… too unreliable.

You get what you pay for. The plane was dirty and the seats were awful.

Nightmare airline. Avoid Avelo. Understaffed at check-in with long, slow lines. Inexplicably had two flights and only one plane. Not weather or maintenance related apparently. One was supposed to go to Myrtle Beach and one to Orlando. I imagine someone thought it would be better to fly the available plane to Myrtle Beach and back and then go to Orlando since that round-trip was shorter. This didn’t account for the human factor of an end-of-week Orlando flight being 85% Disney passengers and putting the flight on a six-hour delay in New Haven airport… which, if you’ve been there, is tiny and has nothing to do for 50 kids excited to get to Disney. This delay was announced at the time of departure. No one realized before the time of departure there was no plane on the ground? And no one thought… hey I think the Myrtle Beach crowd might be a better one to have wait if we’re going to make a choice here (mind you the initial inbound plane was coming from Orlando and supposed to be out aircraft… they literally said let just grab this plane because it’s here to get this other group out at the last second). There is/was zero customer service desk for Avelo in HVN and there were no updates/announcements throughout the day. Plane still gets back late and we finally leave. No wi-fi on these planes, no snack or even water. I know this is budget airline, but expected at least a water after 8 hours of travel day. This should have been offered in terminal too. We land… hooray. Would you believe there is no ground crew to get the plane in to the gate… for 27 minutes. 27 minutes!!! At this point the rental car center is closing in 10 minutes, kids on the plane are crying again, and everyone is talking about how they’re never flying Avelo again. Finally get off. Bags are out at baggage claim right away (finally something right?), but they’ve stopped the carousel immediately and there is no baggage service rep. People are climbing over the carousel to get to the far side (if you’ve ever been to MCO you’ve seen it) because obviously they just stopped it immediately once all the bags were out. This airline is a dumpster fire. Icing on the cake was that while everyone was stuck in HVN, they were setting up for a celebration of their millionth passenger tomorrow. I bet 995,000 of those will never fly the airline again. Don’t fly Avelo. You’ve been warned.

Airline was the only available airline during the Southwest cancellation. It was easy to book. Lowest available fair. Convenient airports. Everything was great. Problem was, they didn’t release what gate flight was departing. The woman at the ticket booth didn’t know which terminal they were boarding and wanted me to wait in 30+ minute line versus telling me to look for flight kiosk. Burbank gate was packed. Otherwise the flight was perfect!!

Barely room for the tray table to come down. Clearly a budget airline that overcharges for every additional service.

Positive: Entertainment via phone on the short was great and my first time. Good food and wine and head phones for free. Negative: Seat hardly reclined on the long flight. Breakfast was an egg with a bun. No egg choices and rather have something sweet like bun/jam and Youghurt.

They did get us booked on a later flight, but it made us miss our connecting flight. So, we had to stay and another state overnight with no luggage or clothes. Because they kept our luggage at airport for next flight on the next day.

Flight was on time. Staff were friendly. I paid for Economy Plus but was required to check my standard carry-on luggage due to lack of space on the aircraft. This cost me 30 minutes, unexpectedly, in waiting at the baggage claim. This experience did not meet my expectations.

Crew is way too many times on the intercom re explaining the same thing

Amazing comfortable chairs great snacks super friendly staff pilots did excellent job. Smooth sailing all the way. Definitely be flying United more.

We waited too long to get water while the plane was on the Tarmac awaiting de-icing.

Easy peasy. Crew was great. Take-off and landing nice anc chill (good job by the pilot). Thank you UA!

The plane was delayed coming in and on the tarmac. I was coming from another flight so it made for a very long day. The stewardess kept trying to slam the overhead bins closed and I was worried that she had damaged my new luggage. They ran out of snacks and lccdsddd me a hummus box which was nice. It took them a very long time to pick up the garbage so I could not go to the washroom and had little time. To prepare for disbarment. The TV system was hard to control from the armrest and picture wasn’t clear. The crew did apologize several times for the lateness. It took the Denver airport an unusually long time to de-ice the plane.

By in large it was a good experience. The flight crew was great and that's the most important to me. Boarding was fine.

It was fine. Everything ran on time, crew was great.

This flight is frequently delayed. The connections seemingly are more frequently delayed. I’ve missed connections as a result twice on the same route to charlotte then Charleston. Final destination arrival has been the next day, twice in a row. No pilots, no crew. Too many excuses. Unfortunately, my days with American are over.

Entertainment was okay not because anything was wrong but it is a short flight so having no wifi is annoying but understandable. Crew was outstanding as usual

Those seats were way too narrow. I had the middle seat, one person was a very skinny person and we still couldn’t avoid touching each other anytime one of us moved. The other person was larger and we were basically sitting in each others lap the entire flight. There was zero entertainment. The flight was long enough to justify tvs, but no. Gotta sit there in your infant seat and twiddle your thumbs.

The Flight attendant had an attitude and didn't allow anyone any time to prepare for landing despite being absent throughout the entire trip

Flight boarded without pilots. Sat on plane for 3 hrs. after over an hour late boarding. Plane never took off. Had to deplane near midnight. Line for rebooking was 3 hours + long. I had to leave.

The flight was great but board was a nightmare. The gate was changed 4 times during the layover period

The experience was great and much better than the flight going out. of course I was in first class but the service was excellent

Cold air blew constantly on my legs almost making me numb.

Missed the flight because of them and up geting a rental car

Delayd flight out of atl as always miss my conection in dfw no flight untill next day

A flight attendant appeared to not be in a good mood that served us; felt she was being short. Overhead announcements were very loud compared to other airlines and the message was not friendly and was a little confusing. This flight was particularly over all was not satisfying compared to previous Sun Country flights.

Airlines should have to add their fees to their fares

I am upset with the hidden fees for bringing on an overhead carryon onto flight and also having to pay for my seat selection. This should all be part of the original price of the ticket. Very poor customer service

Sun country Wi-Fi was not working. Flight was overbooked by two people. Had to pay extra for carryons day before flight and I don’t like hidden fees like that.

WiFi did not work. Woman flight attendant in the rear of the plane was moody.

Flight delayed over 3 hrs due to unexplained issue. No text message to notify.

Well we did not realize at first it was a ground transfer, but we really enjoyed it and would definitely recommend to friends and family. Our driver was awesome and the ride was wonderful. A bathroom on board would have been nice, but at least we were warned that there wasn't one so we went ahead of time.

We were on a fairly long flight and they offered nothing for a snack (unless you paid) and then quickly gave you a drink and were never to be seen again. I would have loved a refill on my water but that was not an option. The flight attendants were standing on ther phone when we boarded and left and never even greeted us. Any other flight I have been on they would have welcomed us on the plane and again greeted us as we got off. Our landline transfer from MSP to Rochester on the other hand was FANTASTIC! We would highly recommend!

Took forever to get the plane loaded and unloaded. Longest I have ever had. I was in the middle of the plane and it almost took a hour after landing to get off of the plane.

Our flight was delayed and there was no communication at the airport.

I-25 Travel from Colorado Springs to Denver

How to Get From Denver to Colorado Springs and Vice-Versa

April 14, 2021 By //  by  Samantha Ripley

Traveling between Denver and Colorado Springs can be a bit of a trek, but luckily there’s more than one way to make this relatively short journey if you’re flexible. From driving yourself on a number of routes, to taking a bus or flying from airport to airport, let’s go over the best methods for how to get from city to city.

Many out-of-state visitors start their adventure at Denver International Airport, some opting to head straight to the state’s 2nd most populated city, Colorado Springs. With so many things to do in both Denver and Colorado Springs , it’s no wonder that so many tourists and locals alike travel through the I-25 gap to experience what these cities have to offer.

Whether you’re in town for a few days or you’re just looking for a different route for your commute, in addition to the most used I-25, there a are a few other ways to go the between cities, at cost, time and scenery. We’ve put together a thorough guide to help you pick the right transportation for how to get from Denver to Colorado Springs, or Colorado Springs to Denver.

Let’s dive deeper into the best ways to  travel between Colorado Springs and Denver:

Fly from Denver Airport to Colorado Springs Airport

Colorado Springs Airport Mountains

Although it may seem quicker than making the trip by car and is certainly faster once in the air, once you account for the time spent going to/from and waiting in the airports, it’s most certainly a longer experience. Perhaps during peak rush hour traffic though, or with terrible snow or road construction, you might save real time, and certainly less stress than driving. It’s especially an efficient option if you’ve just arrived at either airport and just need to connect to the other city.

Flying between Colorado Springs and Denver is a bit more costly than you would think for two cities being less than 100 miles apart. It’s around 70 miles to either fly or drive. The flight time is around 45 minutes, versus 1.5 hour by car. For airport to airport travel, estimate at least $150 per flight, more at the last minute. And with the security lines to bypass at Denver International Airport (D.I.A.), it may not take much less time than driving unless you’ve caught a connecting flight and therefore already through security.

To make things a bit easier for you, flying directly into the Colorado Springs Airport is your best bet. While you may end up paying more for your flight, there are a number of airports that offer direct flights to Colorado Springs for much cheaper than an extra $150 per trip. Plus the time saved is great for those who are only looking to visit the Pikes Peak Region.

For example, there are direct flights from Houston and Las Vegas to the Colorado Springs Airport, which can be found for around $200 depending upon the time of year. Check your favorite booking site to see if your city is one of the few. If not, there are a few other ways to get down to the Springs, even if you fly into D.I.A.

Rent Car/Drive I-25 from Denver to Colorado Springs

Colorado Springs Highway I-25

Perhaps the easiest option for traveling between Colorado Springs and Denver is to drive yourself. It’s simple enough to secure a rental car at D.I.A. for around $30 a day and take the fastest route to The Springs, Interstate-25. On a day without too much traffic, the trip can be made in about an hour and a half, but those who commute daily know that with traffic, it can be a two to three hour drive.

Be warned that if you’re driving yourself: Denver traffic can not only be heavy during rush hour, but winter storms can sometimes come out of nowhere, causing dangerous conditions on the road. Even if you’re visiting in the spring months of March, April, and May, be on the lookout for fast-moving storms that may pour down a combination of hail and snow. If traveling during these months, spend a little more on your rental to ensure you have an adequate vehicle, tires and 4WD.

Another consideration to take into account is the current construction and road expansion on I-25 between Monument and Castle Rock, which has made much of the gap between Colorado Springs and Denver very narrow and a bit bumpy to drive on. Be careful just north of Monument where the construction begins, as there are many twists and turns that make the road difficult to navigate at typical highway speeds.

Parallel Plains Route Hwy 83 – If you’d like to try a relatively parellel route to I-25 that’s along the Great Plains plus 30-60 minutes, you can take this back country route to around Monument or beyond, before meeting back up with I-25. Unfortunately, you’ll still need to put up with the brunt of traffic through Denver until the detour.

Take I-25 south from Denver to the edge of the main metropolitan area at at Lone Tree, exit 195. Go east to Parker on Lincoln Avenue. You can also exit one mile earlier on I-25 at 196, for E-470 east (pay small toll) to Parker Rd.

Meet up with a commercial street Parker Road/State Highway 83, turning right onto it, heading south past Franktown . You can join back west to I-25 at Monument , or a few other places. This way receives less traffic than I-25 and adds nearly an hour to the drive.

There’ll be some traffic lights on this country back route. It’s one for the sightseers and those looking for a different scenario than I-25 during rush traffic, weekends included now. If you’re Take a hike at Castlewood Canyon State Park if you got the time.

Parallel Plains Route Highway US-85/CO-105 – This route starts on I-25 very briefly in Denver. You’ll take I-25 just  south of Downtown Denve r to the exit for Santa Fe Dr/US-85 S. Follow it south all the way to Sedalia . If you’re feeling hungry, swing by Bud’s Cafe & Bar on Manhart Ave. They serve up locally famous hamburgers.

In Sedalia meet up with CO-67 S, which you’ll stay on for less than half a mile before turning left on CO-105 E. Follow that heading south to Palmer Lake , where you can explore its artsy little downtown area and front range views. From this town follow CO-105 the rest of the short way to Monument and I-25 S. Take south to Colorado Springs.

Alternative Mountain Back Route CO-67

Highway CO-67 Mountain Views North of Woodland Park

Nearly all folks driving between Colorado Springs and Denver take I-25. It’s the most straight, direct route to either city. However, if you duck west into the mountains a bit from either city, you take CO-67 for most of the route. It adds about an hour onto your drive on average – going from 1.5 hours to 2.5 hours. It’s a much more scenic trip though with much less traffic.

The alpine drive on CO-67 passes by gorgeous forest and mountain landscapes. Part of the hillsides have scars from a previous forest fire. You can see the dramatic scenery of this unique section of Colorado’s front range. There are a few points for commerce on the way, but plenty more nature and a few outstanding overlooks.

Coming from the Mile High – You’ll drive southwest out of Denver on Highway 285 until you reach Pine Junction . From here you’ll take a left heading south on Pine Valley Road, which meets up with CO-67 at Deckers. This blink-your-eye-and-you’ll-miss-it fishing community is home to the South Platte River and excellent fly fishing.

You can also take Highway 85 south from CO-470 in Denver and join CO-67 earlier at Sedalia . This is a bit more of backwoods route, but boats incredibly stunning creekside rocks early on. It adds only 10 minutes or so to the Highway 285 directions. CO-67 continues south at Deckers, passing some historic structures and secluded residences on the way to Woodland Park at Highway 24. Here you’ll make another left heading east for about 30 minutes to Colorado Springs. Reverse the directions to go the other way.

Uber/Lyft from Denver to Colorado Springs

Ride Sharing Lyft Car Denver Union Station

While pricey, it’s certainly possible to hire an Uber , Lyft , or other ride-share transportation service for your travels between Denver and The Springs. Budget at least $100 for the trip if you decide upon this route–even more if you’re looking for a nicer vehicle.

You’ll probably have to search for quite a while to find a driver who is willing to make the trip. We suggest a nice tip for your driver, as the roads can be a bit dicey depending upon the time of year and the aforementioned construction can be a nightmare to navigate during heavy traffic.

Taking an Uber or Lyft may not be the cheapest option, but if you’re used to traveling in the care of a local driver, it might be a good choice for you. If that sounds a little bit too precious for your budget, check out the bus shuttle services we’ve listed below.

Bus Shuttles from Denver to Colorado Springs

Bustang Bus Travel Colorado Springs to Denver

There are a few different types of bus shuttles that you can take when busing between Colorado Springs and Denver, depending upon your desired destination. Whether you’re just looking for the best shuttle between the cities or you need transportation from the airport, we’ve got you covered.

City to City Buses

The easiest and cheapest way to travel between Denver and Colorado Springs is to take the shuttle known as the Bustang . These distinct purple busses are comfortable, clean, and offer Wi-Fi and bathrooms, making them an excellent choice for everyone. If you’re looking to avoid driving the traffic on I-25 yourself and get some work done on the roughly two-hour ride, the Bustang is your best option. It departs multiple times daily from Denver’s Union Station .

Not only does this bus service offer $13 rides between the two cities, it also offers connections to other parts of Colorado as well, including as far south as Alamosa and as far west as Grand Junction. It’s also quite easy to connect from the Bustang to Denver and Colorado Springs’ public transportation, allowing you to get just about anywhere in the cities from your initial destination. In Denver that’s the RTD Bus and Light Rail , and Colorado Springs has the Mountain Metropolitan Transit .

If you’re looking to explore Colorado Springs’ downtown area, schedule your stop at the Downtown Terminal. From there, it’s easy to walk around and find interesting attractions , like the Pioneer Museum or just enjoying the Art on the Streets. The Bustang also stops at the Tejon/Nevada Park and Ride if you’re looking for a more convenient place to park your car or to meet friends and family than the Downtown Terminal.

Colorado Springs Tejon Park and Ride

Airport to City Buses

Are you trying to find a way to get to your destination straight from Denver International? There are a few different transportation companies that offer direct routes from D.I.A. to Colorado Springs.

One of the most popular and least expensive is Groome Transportation , which offers a $50 fare for shuttles between the Denver Airport and The Springs. With 16 roundtrip departures 7 days a week, Groome is a reliable option for travelers looking for a direct shuttle without having to shell out hundreds of dollars.

A less expensive but more time consuming option is to utilize public transportation via the A Line Train to get to Denver Union Station from the airport. From there, the aforementioned Bustang is only a $13 ticket to take the shuttle down to Colorado Springs. Add in $10.50 for the trip on the Denver Airport Train. Be aware that once you get down into The Springs, public transportation won’t be as wide-reaching, so finding your way around to out-of-the-way destinations might be more difficult than in Denver. But there’s always ride sharing apps, like Uber and Lyft to utilize locally for that.

Is There A Train from Denver to Colorado Springs?

Train Railroad Tracks Between Colorado Springs and Denver

Unfortunately, there is not currently a passenger train from Denver to Colorado Springs. Most of the trains that come through the The Springs are freight trains, so you won’t have any luck finding a passenger car to hop into. Although there has been some interest in adding a train line to Colorado Springs, including a proposed bullet train called the “Hyperloop” in 2017, it doesn’t seem like there will be any way to ride the rails to The Springs from Denver in the next decade or so.

If you’re looking for a scenic train ride in the Pikes Peak area, check out the Narrow Gauge Railroad in Cripple Creek or the Royal Gorge Railroad to get your fill. Or if you’re planning a trip in 2021, the Pikes Peak Cog Railway is set to reopen, which will take you to the top of  a 14,000 foot mountain.. While none of these railroads is meant purely for transportation, they do offer incredible views of the Rockies and are a great way to explore the scenic beauty of the Pikes Peak region.

What To Do While in Colorado Springs

Colorado Springs Downtown City Center Sign

No matter which way you’ve decided to transport yourself between Colorado’s two largest cities, we hope you are safe in your travels.

To make your stay in The Springs even more enjoyable, check out the incredible hiking trails that dot the city or take a tour of the best steakhouses in the area. If you’re looking for an interesting place to stay while you’re in town, there’s a lot to choose from. Colorado Springs also offers a wide variety of unique hotel accommodations to suite every budget and style.

Frequently asked questions

  • Get your trip off to a wonderful start by being well prepared. Pack your passport, travel documents and any medications you need first. After that, think about downloading the latest TV series on your tablet or phone for a guilt-free binge session. Or, bring that bestseller you’ve been saving for a rainy day. Lastly, a snack or two to nibble on and a quality neck pillow will go a long way to making the journey as comfortable as possible.
  • Don’t forget there’s also a list of prohibited items for your hand luggage which can differ between airlines. As a general rule, avoid bringing anything flammable, sharp or explosive. This includes things like box cutters, razor blades, aerosol cans and flares. Sports equipment like baseball bats, tennis rackets and objects that could harm passengers, such as swords and batons, are also banned from the cabin.
  • The aisles of a plane aren’t the place for a fashion parade. Layer up with comfy clothes and bring a sweater since it can get cool in the cabin on long-haul flights. Sneakers or enclosed, flat shoes are perfect for longer journeys.
  • Lessen your risk of developing deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clotting condition which can be caused by sitting for long periods of time, by regularly walking around the cabin. Otherwise, do some lower limb exercises in your seat. If you’re at higher risk of developing DVT, consider wearing compression socks or tights.
