What do actor Raveena Tandon, businessman Sanjay Hinduja, influencer Diipa Khosla, and Reliance industry scion Isha Ambani have in common? They all said ‘I Do’ to the same wedding destination : Udaipur, India. The city in Rajasthan is often dubbed as the most romantic in the subcontinent. And as it turns out, it is also likely one of the most expensive wedding destinations in the world. But industry experts will tell you that there is a good reason why the City of Lakes commands its price. 

Ringed by the gentle Aravallis and dotted with lakes, Udaipur, India provides a beautiful natural ambience for a wedding. Add to this, the city’s rich heritage and world-class hospitality and you have the perfect setting for the Big Day. 

Rituraj Khanna, CEO of Q Events , is a specialist in Udaipur weddings. Having planned the weddings of Padmaja Kumari Parmar and her brother Lakshyaraj Singh Mewar, both of the House of Mewar, the former royal house of Udaipur. “When we started planning weddings in Udaipur 15 years ago, there were limited choices—HRH Group of Hotels, Radisson Udaipur, and a local property. It’s a very different scenario now, with many more options,” he says. 

The wedding-scape in the city changed with the arrival of The Oberoi Udaivilas Udaipur in 2007 and The Leela Palace Udaipur in 2009, both on the banks of Lake Pichola. Together with the iconic Taj Lake Palace in the heart of Pichola, it is the Holy Trinity of wedding venues. Then there is the Shiv Niwas Palace by HRH Group of Hotels and Taj Fateh Prakash Palace within the City Palace complex on the banks of the lake. Trident Udaipur is internally connected to The Oberoi Udaivilas, making it easy to combine both hotels for a larger guest list. Raffles Udaipur, which sits on its own island on the Udai Sagar Lake , is the newest entrant, and when the 450-key JW Marriott comes up in the coming years, it could be the largest hotel in the city. With these ultra-luxury additions, it makes sense that Udaipur has become the hot ticket for weddings in the subcontinent. 

What does a destination wedding in Udaipur cost?

When in Udaipur, it’s all about the lake. Unsurprisingly, the cost of your wedding seems to be directly proportional to your venue’s proximity to Lake Pichola. A lakeside venue is the real flex of getting married here. And it can cost you a pretty penny. 

“Real estate around the lake is very expensive. Considering the kind of hotels we’re talking about, the room rate for a minimum buyout can easily average $900 per room per night during peak season. Hiring hotel Jag Mandir for an event alone can cost you about $30,000 to $40,000 for a night,” says Aditya Motwane, director of Motwane Entertainment and Weddings . He approximates an average spend per guest including accommodation, décor, entertainment, and F&B for a three-day wedding to be at least $35,000 in the thick of the wedding season. In the shoulder or off-season, this can come down to about $18,000. “You can also budget by having all your functions under one roof. And as you move to hotels away from the lake or on the outskirts, Udaipur becomes more affordable,” Motwane says.

While all these costs are indicative, these numbers show that Udaipur 30% more expensive in comparison to Jaipur and Jaisalmer.  WedMeGood.com found that the average cost of a destination wedding (calculated per plate, after polling over 1,100 wedding industry professionals for their annual survey) in Udaipur is 10-20 precent higher compared to elsewhere in the country. The cost is said to be at par, or sometimes higher, than a wedding in Thailand or parts of Europe; with international airfare and visa being the only added expenses. 

Sometimes, guests are required to buy out the hotel for an extra day to allow for set-ups in the middle of back-to-back buyouts. Or in order to execute it at minimal disturbance to their other guests. While Udaipur has a domestic airport, connectivity is somewhat limited. So, many who marry here are known to charter flights for the sake of convenience. All these logistical factors increase the cost. 

And then there’s the question of entertainment, catering, décor, and overall experience matching the grandeur of your destination too. (Fun fact: stars like Jennifer Lopez, Beyoncé, and Shakira have performed at weddings in Udaipur.) “When you are already spending big, then another $20,000 is not a big deal for many of these families. Which is why only the moneyed come to Udaipur,” states Khanna.

Is it worth the price?

Experts tell us that Udaipur’s wedding industry functions like well-oiled machinery. Here’s a city that has identified an opportunity and really upped its game over the last decade to earn this top spot. “The infrastructure is simply the best,” declares Mohan. “There was a time when we had to ship most of what we needed from Mumbai and New Delhi. But today, the rise in local entrepreneurship ensures we can source a lot more locally.” This includes everything from local performers and gift items to salon services, make-up artists, DJs, percussionists, and chefs.

Khanna reveals that a lot of wedding industry professionals from around the world are now making Udaipur their home base, particularly during peak wedding season, simply owing to the demand for their services. “All the weddings we’ve worked on here are executed at a very international standard. And the hospitality is unmatched anywhere else in the world,” adds Patel. 

Motwane, who has executed over 30 big-budget weddings in Udaipur in the last decade, says: “Udaipur is more than just a sheer visual delight. It’s the epitome of luxury too. And that comes at an expense.” Jaipur-based couple Prashasti Goyal, founder of clothing label Auruhfy, and her emerald trader husband Dhruv Sonkia agree. They chose the city for their 500-guest wedding in July last year. Their main functions were hosted at Trident, Udaipur with a carnival at Hotel Lakend that is on the shore of Fateh Sagar Lake. Chunda Palace was enlisted to house some guests too. “We did consider Jaisalmer and venues on the outskirts of Jaipur, but Udaipur proved to be the most seamless choice,” says Goyal. The couple worked with local vendors for planning, décor, and food which she describes as a seamless experience. “Yes, it was more expensive than the other cities we considered for the wedding. But we did not have to stress about anything here. It was the right decision,” attests Goyal. 

The bride reveals this was her dream after watching the Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone-starrer  Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013), in which the film’s wedding sequence was shot at The Oberoi Udaivilas. “Even though we are from Jaipur, the royal aesthetic of a wedding in Udaipur really has its own unmatched vibe.”

Hosted at the beguiling lake-front property of Taj Fateh Prakash Palace in Udaipur, Harsh’s proposal to Shreenal was simply surreal. From a photo wall documenting their story of love to live music amidst an abundance of rose petals followed by perfectly timed fireworks, the stunning moment planned by WeddingSutra Favorite – Desert Pearl Entertainment was high on splendor.

How they met Shreenal Badiani & Harsh Jain’s first interaction had been all the way back in 2014, when they were introduced by a mutual friend in London. Although it was in 2018 that they went out on their first date in India when they felt an instant connection, and they just knew that they were meant for each other.

The Proposal Planned and conceptualized with the help of Desert Pearl Entertainment , Harsh pulled off a dreamy proposal for Shreenal at the undeniably royal venue of Taj Fateh Prakash Palace in Udaipur. He shares, “Shreenal loves waterfronts and sunsets. What could have been a better location than the royal city of lakes itself? The regal yet serene ambience of the heritage palace property was an obvious choice to make the moment unforgettable. Needless to say, the hospitality and service of the hotel was amazing.”

Set with bohemian elements like flowers and lanterns, the dreamy waterfront setup was flush with romance. A red carpet walkway scattered with rose petals and flanked by flower vases and lanterns led to the cozy candle lit date setup of plush cushions, a white teepee, dreamcatchers and more. An adorable photo wall full of the couple’s happy memories added a special touch to the evening. A huge marquee light with the words ‘Marry me’ glowed boldly aside while fireworks went off at Sunset even as Harsh went down on one knee on a heart-shaped bed of roses to pop the question to Shreenal. Serenaded by a live singer, the couple basked in the joy of the moment.

Looking back at his experience of working with Desert Pearl Entertainment , he shares, “Everything was flawless. Working with their team was the best decision I could have taken. From the perfect sunset to the beautifully executed decor, the occasion was everything I had imagined. The impeccable coordination with the photographer, live singer, fireworks and even the hotel for the perfect timing and set up made it one of the best moments we have shared together, and I cannot thank them enough”.

Wedding industry on upward trend

The Travel Wedding Show held in Udaipur covered a range of topics creating a platform for collaboration. The Indian wedding market size has grown to around US$50 billion.

The eighth edition of Travel Wedding Show in Udaipur was a resounding success, boasting more than 2,000 productive meetings. The two-day event welcomed wedding planners, hotels, airlines, and global tourism boards, creating an engaging platform for collaboration.

The panel discussion was moderated by Rajeev Jain, Founder and MD, Rashi Entertainment. The panellists included Elisa Maria Robles Fraga, Director (India), Spain Tourism Board, Kamilia Hani Abdul Halim, Deputy Director, Tourism Malaysia, and Aishvarya Guhagarkar, Director, M!CE, Switzerland Convention Bureau. Their valuable insights added depth to the discussion.

Highlighting the growth of Indian wedding industry, Jain said, “The wedding sector accounts for US$50 billion (` 5,00,000 crores) post-COVID. From small intimate weddings to extravagant celebrations costing ` 100 crores, the industry offers a range of options.”

He emphasized that India boasts the largest growth rate in the wedding business. “With a growth of 30 per cent following the COVID challenges, India has outperformed other nations. The USA has experienced a decline of 2 per cent, while China and the UK have witnessed growth rates of 10 per cent and 30 per cent, respectively,” he said.

Hotel pricing challenges

Expressed concern about issues of pricing with Indian hotels, he revealed, “Hotels in India tend to charge exorbitant rates for wedding events, which is becoming an obstacle for wedding agencies. The hotels should consider reasonable pricing to support global partners and cater to the growing Indian wedding market.” Incentivization should be based on total billing, fair pricing policies must be adopted, the hotels must stop overcharging their clients, he added.

Elisa Maria Robles Fraga highlighting Spain’s potential as a prime wedding destination, shared a few aspects that make Spain stand out, such as the pleasant Mediterranean climate, rich cultural heritage, glorious castles and monasteries, and diverse natural landscapes. Responding to Jain’s concerns about visa processing delays for Indian weddings in Europe, Fraga said, “The visa application process has improved significantly. The Spanish Consulate in Mumbai has streamlined procedures for big groups, including weddings, with a quick turnaround time for visas.”

Popular tourism destination

Kamilia Hani Abdul Halim revealed Malaysia is well acquainted with Indian travellers. Kuala Lumpur, Penang, and Langkawi have become prominent attractions not only for Indian tourists but also for travellers from other nations. As a multicultural country, Malaysia embraces diverse customs and traditions, including those of the local Indian communities. This cultural richness is one of the reasons why these locations are favoured by Indian tourists.  Also, Malaysia offers a wide array of culinary delights, allowing individuals to easily find their preferred Indian cuisine,” shared Halim.

“Many hotels, particularly five-star ones, have hosted Indian weddings in the past. These hotels have the necessary infrastructure to accommodate Indian weddings, handling a guest count of around 300-400 people with ease. As the competition intensifies, these properties strive to provide exceptional wedding experiences,” Halim asserted.

Malaysia’s temperate climate allows weddings throughout the year, except for the monsoon season on the East Coast, which lasts from September to February. Advising that this period should be avoided, she recommended March to August as the most suitable months for destination weddings in Malaysia.

To support Indian wedding planners, Halim averred, the Malaysia government has improved visa facilitation, offering assistance for groups with specific requirements, including special treatment and direct flights to destinations with no direct access to Malaysia.

Wedding packages

Switzerland offers many opportunities to enhance the wedding experience with tailored activities and excursions, said Aishvarya Guhagarkar. “Switzerland offers a range of wedding packages to cater to the specific needs and desires of Indian couples. These packages often include traditional Indian ceremonies, such as mehndi and sangeet, combined with Swiss-inspired elements to create a unique fusion of cultures,” highlighted Guhagarkar.

Emphasizing Switzerland’s efficient visa services and its role in making Switzerland a dream destination for extravagant weddings, Guhagarkar said, “Switzerland is the lone country having 13 VFS centers. We have done the maximum number of visas this year until June. We have issued close to 30 per cent more visas than those issued in 2019,” she said.

Elaborating on the cooperation with the Switzerland Embassy, she said, “We work closely with the embassy. We tell them well in advance as to which M!CE groups are going. The  tour operators are including Switzerland in their programmes, and also inform them about the weddings that are takimng place in Switzerland.”

Guhagarkar further said, “If we are informed around 3-4 months in advance, we can intimate the Swiss embassy, and they will then prepare the roadmap for these weddings in Switzerland. This proactive approach by the Swiss authorities ensures a smooth and efficient visa application process for the couples and the wedding guests alike.”

Catering to Indian palate

Switzerland takes pride in catering to culinary preferences, and Indian cuisine is no exception. He shared, “Availability of Indian food is no

issue for us. We have one of the biggest suppliers of ingredients, and he has outlets in at least four different parts of Switzerland. So, ingredients are not an issue, Indian chefs are not an issue. They are all based here in different regions. Couples and their guests can indulge in the flavours of home, while enjoying Switzerland.”

4. Ahar Museum

Ahar Museum is all about the rich past of the city and its rulers. It is one of the ancient museums in Udaipur known for its old-age charm. The museum is all about diving into the intricacies of the Ahar civilisation. You can find ancient utensils, weapons and clothing in the exhibits. 

Even a lot of decorative items are available for viewing. Iconic sculptures, photographs and pottery items take you back to the civilisation that once existed. What’s more? There are a number of cenotaphs located super close to the museum. 

The cenotaphs trace back to the rulers of Mewar. The tomb-like structures were built in honour of kings and queens. Interestingly, there are 19 such cenotaphs (chattris) representing the cremation of 19 maharajas of Mewar. Architecture and construction style talk a lot about the Mewar dynasty.

6. Hall of Heroes Museum 

Popularly known as the Moti Magri Museum, the Hall of Heroes has to be on your list. Located close to the Maharana Pratap Smarak, it is one of the famous museums in Udaipur. The museum tells you a lot about the history and life of Maharana Pratap. 

Historical equipment and displays of armoured clothing elevates your time. What’s more? Beautiful paintings throughout the museum talk about the role of important men in the history of Udaipur. You can witness life-size statues of folk men carved out of stone.

7. Bhartiya Lok Kala Mandal

Udaipur is all about the ethnic traditions and culture of Rajasthan. That’s when Bhartiya Lok Kala Mandal adds a touch of spark to it! This museum is famous for preserving the rich heritage of festivals and cultural practices. Not only Rajasthan, you can find information about other states too.

Udaipur surprises you in more ways than you can imagine. Step into the world of crystal where all you see is the illumination of these precious stones. Crystal Gallery is located inside the Fateh Prakash Palace and is open to the public.

It is believed that it has the largest collection of varied crystals here. Moreover, the crystals are collected from different corners of the globe. Such an elegant place attracts hundreds of tourists looking for a unique experience. 

While it is one of the most expensive museums in Udaipur, it is surely worth a visit. From mirrors and table tops to crystal-embedded carpets, everything speaks of royalty!
