Travelling Light creates outstanding theatre for and with young people that inspires their thinking, engages their emotions and fires their imaginations.  Since 1984 we have sparked the creative journey of over one million children and young people in our locality of Barton Hill , throughout Bristol and beyond.

We create award winning professional touring theatre to allow children, young people and their families equal access to artistic excellence. Our productions tour to theatres, arts centres, festivals, community venues and schools and for many of our audiences seeing one of our shows is their first experience of theatre and can inspire a lifetime’s enjoyment. Our work is nationally and internationally facing, while remaining embedded within our  local community.

Our participation programme offers creative experiences to children and young people in Barton Hill and across Bristol. We believe in every child’s entitlement to creativity and imagination and proactively engage with children and young people who would otherwise have little or no access to arts and cultural activities. Our work includes youth theatre, creative learning projects and family and community engagement.

I Wish | Co-Production between the egg & the TLTC

Georgia Winstone-Cooper  reviews I Wish I Was a Mountain , a co-production between the egg and the Travelling Light Theatre Company , and presented for the tour in Wales by Theatr Iolo.

Who am I? Am I my body? Am I my mind? What about my voice? And why do we all exist? These kinds of questions are difficult for any adult to comprehend and I Wish I Was a Mountain poses them to young children, yet it expects no answer. Written and performed by Toby Thompson, I Wish I Was a Mountain is a poetic, musical, and beautifully delicate reimagining of Herman Hesse’s fairytale which encourages children to continue asking the most complicated, vague, and abstract questions they can fathom, but also to think beyond the question and come up with their own answers.

The production begins with some gentle audience interaction; Thompson encourages curiosity and inclusivity amongst those viewing his play. A true highlight of the production is its attitude to children; Thompson’s tone and the plot of the piece is simple enough for those as young as seven to understand, yet it is never condescending nor overly explanatory. I Wish I Was a Mountain treats children as the curious, thoughtful, and intelligent young beings they are. Whilst the language is at times perhaps too advanced for the youngest in the age category, the inquisitive nature which the piece encourages would result in any child simply wishing to find out more about the things they didn’t understand, rather than cause them any confusion or make them feel excluded.

The accessible nature of the production is a real highlight. The lighting is soft and gentle and the music is calm; Thompson finds no need for bright colours and loud noises to attract the attention of his young audience. Indeed, the colours of the set are muted and primarily a pale brown; the set, which has the atmosphere of Thompson’s own sitting room, is littered with wooden houses of various sizes, record players, and a piano. There is enough to draw the eye to wander and wander, yet not so much that it distracts from the plot itself. The inclusion of deaf poet Donna Williams’s live interpretation adds a further layer of magic and curiosity. Williams is not simply relegated to the side of the stage to provide translation, but is included in the very movement and rhythm of the piece; she plays with the set, touches the speakers to feel the music being played, and dresses up alongside Thompson and is an integral part of the delightful whimsy of the play. Williams’ presence is a necessity to make the production accessible, yet the way in which she is included adds further beauty and joy to a truly wonderful piece.

The primary focus is a retelling of Hesse’s fairytale, yet the style in which Thompson introduces and explores the narrative, providing his own thoughts and questions, encourages the young audience to analyse the story and question it further themselves, rather than simply enjoy the story. The entire production is still, however, immensely enjoyable, magical, and filled with wonder; it does not have the intention of relaying some barely hidden message to the children in the audience, rather it presents them with a story and an idea, questions it and then encourages the children’s own curiosity.

Travelling Light Theatre Company – Light Up School Learning

  • Travelling Light Theatre Company – Light Up School Learning

As Travelling Light Theatre Company’s Teacher Development Fund programme enters its final months, programme lead Lizzy Stephens reflects on the learning to date and shares the company’s plans to embed the work across the participating schools.

Travelling Light Theatre Company has been working with five Bristol schools to support teachers to explore how drama-based learning can develop oracy, and emotional literacy and support wellbeing. The aim is to develop a skills-based curriculum offer, expanding teachers’ practice and embedding drama into the wider curriculum. Our activity has predominantly involved regular weekly sessions with artists supporting teachers to deliver curriculum-based drama activity within their existing lessons. The variable between our partner schools is how long each staff member is involved. This ranges from one term to a full year, or in one case, the two full years of the project.

travelling light theatre company

In year two we have introduced additional planning time for teachers and artists, so a clear transition takes place between artists modelling and teachers leading. We have also added three staff meetings for all of Key Stage 1 & 2, to strengthen a “whole school” approach to embedding practice. The relationships and commitment from our schools and artists have felt solid and a real success. The addition of the staff meetings and additional planning time has been noted by all involved as invaluable.

travelling light theatre company

When looking at the outcomes so far, there is broad agreement and anecdotal evidence that there has been a positive impact on pupil oracy, self-confidence and emotional literacy. We are interested in reviewing the impact over the short or long-term depending on the model we have used. Teachers agree that the CPDL feels relevant, adaptable and useful.

This film highlights the impact of Travelling Light Theatre Company’s Teacher Development Fund project and shows how the arts can bring the curriculum to life for pupils and teachers alike.

There have understandably been some challenges throughout – including the impact of Covid and largely the ongoing unpredictability of staffing in schools. This includes one-off staff absences, to changing teachers. In three of our five partner schools, a large change in leadership has occurred with a new Headteacher. Artists have remained adaptable throughout.

We are pleased to see that some whole school creative strategies introduced have been trialled and adopted in schools. Creative activities that were modelled in sessions have also been developed and trialled as assessment tools. Through the evaluation, we have evidence that teachers are continuing to use ideas and strategies learnt through the CPD sessions outside of the time they are working with our artists. This is true for both teachers that participated in year one and those working with us in year two. Practice has begun to be embedded and there is the impact of teachers further sharing learning/co-teaching with staff that haven’t been directly involved with focused CPDL work. For example, a participating teacher from year one shaping schemes of work for their new year group, to include creative approaches. It is great that some dissemination of learning is already taking place. Senior leadership has noted that teacher confidence has improved – both in terms of using drama as part of everyday teaching and, for early career teachers, improved confidence in teaching more broadly.

In terms of blended approaches, the majority of drama-based activity has taken place and been more successful in person. However, the use of online learning for elements of evaluation, planning and resources has been key.

As we come to the final stages of the project, we are now in the process of creating physical and digital resources for teachers to continue using. Additional reflection and planning between teachers and artists will further embed work beyond the project period. We are forming a plan around the dissemination of learning, which is likely to include further video documentation, an impact report and possibly an event to share with the sector.
