Is The Trek 2000 A Good Road Bike?

Table of Contents

Trek road bikes have always been a popular brand in road bike racing. Following the first generation of the Trek 2000 road bike in 1999, there were different versions of the Trek 2000 in 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2003.

Trek 2000

The Trek 2000, which was entirely hand-built, also competed in a few races at the time. This is a comprehensive review of the Trek 2000 road bike. Is the star model still a good road bike after 15 years?

I recently purchased a used Trek road bike. After a period of riding,We gained some practical experience.

Below we’ll take a look at the Trek 2000’s road performance, as well as its track performance, key components and specs, and its other versions. Finally, we also compare some of the road bikes for sale today to the Trek 2000.

If you’re on a budget, you can check out our Top 9 Best Road Bikes Under 500 [Review] to choose the best road bike.

Road Performance

You’d be correct if you expected more from this “old” road bike. Standard 700C tires, slim 25C tires for fast tarmac speeds. The carbon fiber fork is extremely strong and unbreakable.

Although the road edge section does not provide much shock absorption, it has a very high power transmission ratio when accelerating the ride. On the uphill section of the road, the 3X9 drivetrain makes the rider feel very comfortable.

The steep head tube angle forces the rider out of their comfort zone on downhills and necessitates a different acceleration position to gain a better grip on balance. It takes some getting used to.

It’s a little uncomfortable, but the Trek 2000 is still a good choice when the corner isn’t violent, and it’s still a good choice if you live in the neighborhood.

Track Performance

Even with an expensive race-specific road bike, if it’s just a flat road ride. When compared to the Trek 2000, the difference is only noticeable on longer rides.

On hill rides, the steep head tube angle of the Trek 2000 allows the rider to climb faster. Going downhill increases traction by compressing the body and lowering the center of gravity.

Especially the park’s plastic roads, which are one of my favorite places to ride. The Trek 2000 has a good power transfer ratio and 27 different speeds, allowing the rider to get used to it over a longer period of time, making it a mid-range road bike rather than a pure entry-level road bike.

The track performance is 4.5 out of 5 and is comparable to modern road bikes in the same price range.

Trek 2000 main components and specifications

Aluminum frame.

2003 Trek 2000 WSD

One of the features that distinguish the Trek 2000 bike as an entry-level race road bike is the use of Alpha SL aluminum.

The cost of construction is slightly higher than that of a steel frame, but it is lighter in weight. It maintains the frame’s rigidity.

The body is blue/silver. Standard Trek insignia. The head tube angle is aggressive.

The Trek 2000 frame design is a very classic race-type frame that can be used for not only road racing but also some triathlons.

The Trek 2000 has a Bontrager Race full carbon fork, which contributes significantly to the Trek 2000’s weight savings.

It is well known that the cheaper the bike, the heavier it is, and the Trek 2000 frame design is still very traditional compared to modern road bikes, with no quick-release hubs, a stiff thru-axle, and a stable front wheel for fast travel on flat roads during fast rides.

3X9 drivetrain

The Trek 2000’s 3X9 flywheel has a much higher gear count for flat road riding than the current 2X flywheel. And having more gears means having more gearing options.

This is fantastic for flat tracks. However, if you’re a beginner, having more gears means having a faster shift reaction time. And the three chainrings in the front section aren’t ideal for time trials.

Of course, for casual riding, the 3X9 drivetrain is a godsend, and who can resist a road bike with more gears?

700Cx25C Tires

The 700 x 25c Bontrager Select is a great tool for accelerated riding despite its lack of tread.

When riding on the road, it can accelerate the ride and accommodate up to 28C rims, which are one of the accessories that can be replaced if you want a more comfortable ride.

There is no attempt to achieve extreme lightness in tire weight, and some riders may prefer the thinner 23C tires, but that will be a great test of your riding skills.

It is extremely easy to fall down when going through corners quickly without enough sidewall, especially when going through corners quickly.

However, the thin tires of the 23C appeal to me for the challenge of faster riding speeds.

Other versions of Trek 2000

Trek 2000 wsd.

The Trek 2000 WSD is the perfect road bike for women riders. The 2000 version of the 2000 WSD still had a 3X8 drivetrain.

The 2000 version of the WSD had a 3X8 drivetrain, but the 2001 and later Trek 2000 WSDs all had a 3X9 drivetrain.

The paint colors were light blue and dark blue. The aluminum micro-adjusted seat post is also different from the Trek 2000.

2006 Trek 2000

The number of rear gears has been increased by 10 speeds, but the other changes are not too big.

Trek 2000 Specs

Trek 2000: what do we like.

  • Quality Shimano accessories that will support the bike for years of use
  • Durable, maintenance-free aluminum frame
  • Carbon brazed dimensional fork
  • Standard 700C tires for faster riding
  • Multiple frame sizes to fit riders of all heights

What we don’t like?

  • Hard saddle
  • Pedals need to be upgraded to ride faster

Related Questions

  • How much does the Trek 2000 weigh?

19.3 lbs, which is already relatively light for a road bike with an aluminum frame.

  • How much does the Trek 2000 cost?

The price of the Trek 2000 varies from version to version. However, the official guide price is $1090-$1500.

  • What is the price of a used Trek 2000 bike?

If you are willing to trade in your old bike for a new one, then the price is expected to be around $120.

But at used bike length, it is expected to double. 240 USD is the selling price. This is just the data before release and can be used as a reference.

Comparison Table

Competition, trek domane al 2 vs 2000.

Trek Domane AL 2

In terms of price, aluminum frame, front, and rear rim brakes, light transmission angle, and carbon fork, the Trek Domane AL 2 is similar to the Trek 2000.

However, there is still a speed disparity. The Trek Domane AL 2 has a 2X8 drivetrain, which is not suitable for a competitive bike, and the compact body design is slightly narrower than the Trek 2000.

As a result, the Trek Domane AL 2 is well-suited to the needs of short commuter riders, which explains why they were able to reserve rack holes at the rear end of the frame, as well as front and rear mudguard mounts.

If you’re thinking about the possibility of racing, then consider the Trek Domane AL 4 Disc, which is more suitable than the Trek Domane AL 2.

But if you’re more of a fast commuter, the Trek Domane AL 2 is available at a very affordable price.

Trek Domane AL 4 Disc vs Trek 2000

Trek Domane AL 4 Disc

Although the Trek Domane AL 4 Disc road bike is a little more expensive to purchase, the Trek Domane AL 4 Disc is better for the rider in terms of the quality of its accessories, and a more sensible way of braking when it comes to racing.

The Trek Domane AL 4 Disc is still made of aluminum, but the overall frame weighs about 4 pounds more than the Trek 2000, making it suitable for endurance races and shorter distances.

The 2X10 drivetrain will give riders a wide enough shift range, and while there is a large flywheel gap compared to the Trek 2000, I don’t believe the 2X10 gears are insufficient. I don’t believe the gears on the 2X10 are sufficient.

Front and rear forcible hydraulic disc brakes allow for faster descents followed by quick braking, allowing you to gain valuable time on downhill trails and corners.

If you enjoy gravel sections and trail riding, you’ll be pleased with the Trek Domane AL 4 Disc’s configuration.

RIDLEY Fenix Road Bike vs Trek 2000

RIDLEY Fenix Road Bike

The RIDLEY Fenix Road Bike is the strongest competitor to the Trek 2000 in the list.

A competitive road bike that combines sports aesthetics and cycling, the Gravel Road Bike will see the light of day.

If you own the RIDLEY Fenix you get, carbon fiber frame, carbon fiber fork, 2X11 drivetrain, hydraulic disc brakes, and Vittoria Rubino Pro Tires to keep you rolling on gravel roads.

The RIDLEY Fenix Road Bike has a lighter weight than 2000: around 17 pounds, a clean and tidy look, a steep fork, and the climbing ability to crush the Trek 2000. These are what make the RIDLEY Fenix Road Bike a worthy all-around carbon racing and training bike.

The price point is medium in competitive bikes, not extremely light, but all the performance is up to about 95% of a pro-level road bike, making it a very cost-effective competitive bike.

Schwinn Phocus 1600 vs Trek 2000

Schwinn Phocus 1600

The Schwinn Phocus 1600, which is half the price of the Trek 2000, does not appear to satisfy competitive riders.

The Schwinn Phocus 1600 is an aluminum frame with a carbon fiber fork, but it’s a great alternative to the Trek 2000 for first-time riders looking for a more affordable road bike.

This looks a lot like the Trek 2000. The gearing, however, has been compromised, with a 2X8 drivetrain and no it wide-range gearing.

As a result, the Schwinn Phocus 1600 is only available to riders who commute to ride or go out for exercise.

Final Verdict

With its lightweight, durable aluminum frame and ultra-wide gear range, the Trek 2000 is still a mid-range race road bike that has a lot to offer compared to modern new road bikes.

But if you’re not looking for a used road bike, consider the options in our comparison table.

The Trek 2000, with a stable ride and a configuration that allows for fast and accelerated riding, ultimately we think it’s a good road bike and worth buying.

Bike test – trek 2000.

These days it seems you can’t go anywhere without seeing a Trek being ridden by a rider of any age. Winning seven tours has made a big difference. Lance’s victories have certainly been good for the Wisconsin based company. He’s been made an ‘executive’ of Trek to salute his input into the company – that’s how much they value his input.

But there was a time when Trek road bikes (and to some extent bikes from other big US giants) weren’t that highly regarded as quality bikes, at least in the European cycling world. They’d built their reputation in the Mountain bike boom years. Back in the early nineties if anyone had suggested a Trek, Cannondale, Specialized or Scott would be a recognised ‘pro-peloton’ bike you’d be met with fits of laughter. Now though, that has all changed. Trek has worked closely with the Discovery team (and before that US Postal) to deliver bikes that are faster than the competition. And all this rapid development has been great for the consumer, as the technology has gradually worked down to the cheaper models.

Frame and Fork The 2000 sits bang in the middle of Trek’s impressively large road bike range. When first setting eyes on the blue/black/silver paintjob, you’ll either like it, or loathe it. But love or hate it, the paint hides an impressive frame. Trek has continued to develop their own aluminium tubing, ZR9000, which is used for all the main tubes except the seat stays. Here, a pair of fat OCLV carbon seatstays provides a nice amount of seated resilience. The main tubes of the frame are fat and chunky, and neat and smooth welding looks business-like and is really well executed.

Up front a Bontrager Race full carbon fork slides into the integrated headset. A nice touch is how the mainframe paintjob is extended seamlessly to the forks. The 2000 uses traditional non-compact geometry, with a 73.8° head angle and 73° seat angle, this has a familiar feel and the fork certainly tracks and smoothes the road ahead.

Most of the kit on the 2000 comes with a Bontrager label, much of it is functional and lightweight, if a little repetetive (all the components are Bonty’s). But the Race wheels didn’t disappoint. They might be low down in the overall range, but they worked great and are very strong. They’re not particularly light though, 1070g for the rear and 760g for the front. We found the Bontrager 23mm Race Lite tyres fast and comfortable, though we slashed the sidewall within the first few rides (it was wet), so long-term durability maybe an issue, but at least they’re wearing reasonably slowly. Overall the DT hubs and tight build made for a very sure set of hoops and they look the nuts.

A complete Shimano Ultegra groupset works faultlessly, in fact there isn’t much more that can be said that hasn’t be said already – so I won’t. The Hollowtech II chainset/bottom bracket is super stiff and matches the stiffness of the frame perfectly, it also has smooth lines that echo the intergated front end and the overall look is very pleasing, in an almost sculptural way. Bontrager also supplies the 44.5cm wide handlebars, with an ergo shape. Bar shape is a personal thing so we can’t really fault them [I can! – ed]. An 115m stem keeps the steering tight, and the now standard carbon seatpost provides some additional comfort and looks great. The Bonty saddle wasn’t too popular and those who rode it swapped it for a more familiar perch pretty quickly.

Conclusion Seeing as the 2000 is Trek’s somewhere-in-the-middle-of-the-range race bike, its doesn’t excite like some bikes further up the range, Lance doesn’t ride one for starters. But it is the kind of bike that anybody can jump on and straight away feel at home. The handling is very stable, very reliable and very predictable. Limits can safely be explored, and the bike issues so much confidence you can feel safe about hooning around back lanes, congested city streets or the race track with the assured feeling any good bike should endow you with.

The marriage of 6061 aluminium and Trek’s properierty carbon, OCLV, provides a resilient and lively ride. Compared to the all carbon Pilot the 2000 feels more alive. We tested the Trek Pilot earlier this year and concluded that it is a fantastic Etape/Audax bike. Well if you want to make the step up to racing you could consider the 2000 instead. it’s certainly less sedate and a triple option could offer you both Etape gearing and race performance.

The Pilot is excellent at dampening every little road bumpiness though, and this is nice, but it does kind of feel a little dead in direct comparison, like you’re riding along on a cushion of air. On the 2000 the combination of the aluminium main tubes and carbon seatstays, and carbon fork, relays just enough road surface through to the controls, giving you more feel of what the tyres are rolling over. It makes for a more involved ride, far more suited to whipping up a sprint at the head of a road race bunch.

The 2000 is a fast looking bike for sure, but does it ride fast? Well, yes it does, but in a reassuringly safe way. It doesn’t scare you when pushing it hard, instead remaining well poised and stable under all conditions, and it’s this fact that makes it a pleasure to ride. We’d describe the bike as having a somewhat split personality; on the one side it’s devastatingly fast, but on the other it’s happy and comfortable to just cruise along… It does what it says on the tin, which is probably how Trek intended it to be.

road race & triathlon, Shimano 105 components, ICON Air Rail fork

  • USER REVIEWS

light weight frame, the Rolf Vectors were great, smooth roling wheels(but they arnt as light as my team ti's) 105 works great, never a problem with this bike

other than Its owner, The Alum Frame is a little harch on chip and seal roads, but the ti spokes and carbon seatpost help alot

Id like to say Ive been kind to this bike but I havent.in the last 4000 miles, Its flipped out of my truck bed, crashed a few times, once it did an endo into a ditch, but this is one tough frame, tougher than me.

Similar Products Used:

My other bike is a 30 yr old 531 lugged Crescent, Great for its day but similar, not

Stiff, light frame. Fast and very comfortable for long rides. Handles beautifully and is nicely stable even during occasional 40 mph downhills. The Rolf wheels are amazing - light but very tough, needing only very slight truing despite >1200 miles per year. Excellent value, with high performance without a stunning price tag.

Replaced the stock seat with a Mens Lib Ti - much more comfortable. Also broke one of the pedal clips while far from home, and had to walk miles in cleats. Shimano 105 deraileurs require a little tinkering to keep shifting smoothly. Flashy red color is obnoxious to me, but some might prefer to show off.

Just to add my homage regarding this bike to other folk's glowing reviews. This was my first really good bike, and I loved it from the first ride three years ago to the most recent just this morning. 5500 miles and counting. Can't wait to ride again tomorrow. Nice and light, very responsive, comfortable ride, rolls and corners faster than friends' boutique bikes. Thank you, Trek. Hope your recent models are as good as this one.

Old Japanese steel bike ("Eldorado") for commuting to grad school. No comparison.

The bike is lightweight, and handles very well. The triple chain ring is very useful for me when riding around the hills of Austin. Some days the headwind is so strong in Austin that I need the largest ring even on the semi-flat areas.

None that I have yet noticed regarding the bike itself, except perhaps that the aluminum frame allows bumps to be felt more intensely. The only real weaknesses are related to my own physiology---I get a numb lower back and numb right hand after riding only about 45 minutes. I never had the back numbness problem with my mountain bike where I am seated more vertically.

The 2000 version of the Trek 2200 is an excellent bike. I bought it brand new off the shelf in May of 2002. It is hard to believe it had not sold over the 2000 or 2001 seasons. But because of its age, a 25% discount was offered, resulting in the before-tax price of $1,229.

I test rode bikes that were 2 or 3 times more expensive, including Look and LeMond. But for the price, I am completely happy with the Trek 2200.

This is a light, fast, and comfortable bike. The gearing took some practice, but is terrific. The ROLF wheels are superb, and wouldn''t have any other kind now.

Very poor tires. I had to replace both at 1500 miles.

First road bike, after having ridden a hybrid, greatly modified, for over 18 months. The 2200 initial set-up was difficult for me. I changed the saddle immediately, and had to raise the handlebars about one inch to preclude dead hands, arms, shoulders.

I feel good riding this bike. Componentry performs well. This is my first road bike in my adult life, I wanted to stay under a $1k but after test riding this bike a few times I had to have it!!

None that I have found.....there a few creeks here or there (or is that my body?)

Excellent bike for the price. I feel you are getting a quality bike with very good components that performs well for under $1500, granted I did buy new as last year's model. The 2001 model has the same setup and would recommend it. I also have to Thank Alan for turning me onto this ride....

Test rode Lemond Buenos Aries, Specialized Allez Sport, Bianci model?? - all these bikes felt good, the Trek felt/performed as good as all the others, plus the price was right

Light Frame. Very responsive. Great acceleration capabilities.

Hard to fit a frame pump on, so I carry CO2. Other than that, can't pick on it too much.

If I had to make a decision all over again I would get this exact same bike. It's carried me thousands of miles and the quality components are so easy to maintain. For the price- it can't be beat.

Own Trek 830 hardtail mountain bike. Trek is great!

Great feel. Super strength and integrity in the ride. It is very responsive. If you're new to aluminum, it might seem a little electric at first. That's because it so light. Very fast.

I did not like the clips that came stock.

I wanted a bike that would make me competitive. This did. I love the ride. I love the bike and my Triathlon work has show the results. I'm finishing in the top 5 in age group now and moving up. It's a rocket! I would recommend it to anyone wanting a fast, responsive road bike that can race, too. Put it this way, you could spend a lot more for a bike and get much less. This a great value. It just feels good to ride.

The frame only weights 2.9 pounds. The carbon fiber fork helps to cushion front shocks. Shimano 105 gears have worked flawlessly in the last 600+ miles. The Rolf Vector wheels have had no problem with my 250+ pounds. I added the Shimano Flight Deck computer that has also worked flawlessly.

The single sided SPD clipless pedals had to go. I could not get used to having to look to turn the pedals over to be able to clip in. Shifting gears on the front sproket took some getting used to.

Afte riding this bike for the first hundred miles or so I knew it would be a while before I would be able to take full advantage of what this bike is capable of. Shifting is a click and a snap. The computer even shows the gear (2-5) second ring, fifth gear and the gear ratio 2:21. My wife got the WSD (womens specific design) and just loves it. I tested several bikes and the Trek 2200 was by far the best for the price. I will be using this bike for single day rides of 20-50 miles and on the STP (Seattle to Portland) and we will be doing multiday tours. If you want a bike that will serve for all kinds of road riding, the Trek 2200 is for you.

This is my first road bike.

Great bike. Nice color (red), Shimano105 parts work great. Rolf Vector wheels are nice, bike responds well..smooth shifting, quick acceleration. Feels much better than my old steel bike. Dealer gave me a perfect fit, so no neck, back problems...

Did not keep saddle or pedals.

Graet bike. I love it, would not trade it in for any other bike ( well, maybe a titanium frame. I looked at other bikes, best bang for your buck with Trek. Same price range in other manufacturers had some part that was a home brand. No sneaky tricks with the Trek. It was all very upfront and clear.

Steve Bauer cromoly

At 6'2" and 200lbs it has to be the strong frame, it is very stiff when climbing and sprinting but supple enough to soak up the undulations in the road.

Very few, at that price it would have been nice to get an A-head set though.

Fantastic for the price an absolute steal. Better than any other £1000-£1200 bike I can find on the British market. Strong frame coupled to great easy maintenance groupset make an excellent package, well done TREK. As a keen recreational cyclist I strongly recommend this frame in any one of its guises 2000, 2200 and 2300 models, no excuse as to why an amatuer racer cannot compete strongly on this product.

Trek 2000 VRX 200 Full Suspension Bike

trek 2000 review

mountain bike, front & rear suspension, Mountain Mix components, Rock Shox Judy XC, 2.5"-4.0" adjustable travel fork

  • USER REVIEWS

This bike has held up through a lot! Front end of the frame is bombproof.

Rear end of the frame isn't so bombproof. I cracked it in a few places, from doing an 11 foot drop. I'm not sure really if the bike is made for that though.

This bike is made for more XC style riding than free-riding, but it can easily take the free riding. Even the XC wheels stood up to 6 foot flat drops, and 11 feet to tranny. I'm not sure what Trek was thinking with a flat bar, weak pedals with toe clips, and no name v-brakes. But once you up-grade these few things you have a nice bike. Also, the Cane Creek shocks suck, I blew out 2 of them in less than a month but then the bike shop gave me a Fox coil shock. :) only 4 chillis for overall, because of the few weak components.

Similar Products Used:

Bontrager Jones tires, good for street - riding, good components, well - shaped frame, good rear suspension, good saddle, handlebar and stem also.

It is a really good bycicles for the people that like doing strong Cross Country riding or freeriding, also Downhill, nice looking bycicle (style), very comfortable and safe, also good for the people that like to go to the streets to make some jumps or that kinds of things. I´m very happy with my bicycle, I like it a lot and Iñm gonna like it more when I put the 2002 Hayes Mechanical Disk Brakes and Shimano XT hubs, also a coil suspension (4.75 inches travel)(Fox Vanilla R).

lots of downhill bikes, freeride and Cross Country.

The frame is nice and the bike handels pretty well ive been thoring some 6 footers at it its been holding up great.I gess the Judy xc is pretty good.

The reer shok is a sad pieace of crap the peedels and cranks suck

This bike is a very good buy for the money it eats up 6 fott drops and relly tuff terrin on the north shpre u can upgrade it very easily Its a sweet bike

Very good starting platform, bike can be set up to do just about any extreme riding.

Specialized Cannondale GT

Good components (important parts being Deore XT stuff), Judy XC Shock, relatively light weight,... nearly everything (Yes, and it of course looks fine, even more over here in Germany, where serious biking is really nearly non-existant, a real eye-catcher :-])

Yea, ya know it... the drink bottle mounting position is ridiculous. Nobody will ever know what made Trek to engineer it that way... I circumvented that problem by fitting some generic bottle holder on top of the frame by using two stainless steel hose clamps (? not sure that they are called that way), and protecting the frame with fabric tape below them. No name brakes, but not really a problem so far

Would buy it again. Best ride I ever had.

Giant DS-100, DS-200 (the first being nearly not cheaper, but with crap components, the latter being a lot cheaper, but equipped with even crappier components)

Flys like a Rocket down hill, single track and long STEEP climbs.

Weight, possion of water bottle mounts (like any deul suspension, and the crank sucks soooo much and the front shock weighs 4.5lbs.

After my friend got his Mantra the other day and i got my new bike we went for a 2 hour ride. we were both amazed that we still felt just as good as when we left. the bike is sooooo fast

Mantra 1999 VRX 200 2000 VRX 300 Stinky Dee-Lux

strengths........?

Horrible suspension bob, toe clip peals on a bike in this price range give me a break!, cc shock has horrible rebound, no name poor performing brakes and pitiful tires. poor frame design and funky shock movement and placement of pivot points.

If you are looking at f/s bikes.....do your self a favor and do not purchase this bike. You are much better off with a kona, cannondale, or specialized. I might buy this bike for $500, but at its price it just cant keep up with todays fast moving budget f/s bikes

Frame and Rear Suspension Linkage Rock! Wheel Set looks cool and has stood up to everything that I can dish out to it.

Factory suspension, breaks and levers, are low end! I replaced the Cane Creek AD-5 with a Cane Creek AD-10. Upgraded the Judy XC to a Rox Shox PsyloXC (125mm of travel for 250$ sick deal). I also upgraded to XTR V-Brakes and Levers. When you upgrade all that you have a sick slalom machine!!!!!

If You can afford to upgrade and swap at the shop then the VRX 200 is a sick bike for X-Country riding, Shore Style and Downhilling!

DBR X6, Trek Y-3, Trek VRX 400

Excellent in all conditions. Strong and smooth.

A bit heavy

I've riddin many bikes in my time, and this is one of the best. In terms of cost value it is the best.Could not be more pleased.

GT, Klien, Shwinn

Really nice suspension for 1000$. Durable and not vewry complex. Sweet cross country bike. I ride dirt jumps and freeride on it and it holds up well. VERY lightweight which is good for urban assult riding

I dunno if other riders have had this but the fron deriller hasnt worked well since i bought. Also -the bike comes with factoryt messed up can creek rear shock so it blows in 4 month or so. the good thing is they send you a new and improved model for free.

It's OK but i suggest you get something else unless you really want this bike for some reason

Are theer any tandem riders out there? I'm trying to find info. on the trek t2000 tandem. . Does anyone know anything about the ZR 9000 frame? I'm trying to choose between Burley Tirazza and Santana Sovereign, and the trek. They are similarily equiped, I'd like to get a weight on the T2000. All the trek info I can find doesn't include any weight information. The Burley and Santana publish there weights at 32-34 lbs. Is the trek heavier?

The T2000 is definitely in the ballpark with the Santana and the Burley. Bang for the buck, the T2000 is the way to go. The Santana is very nice but, I believe, significantly more expensive. And Burley is now out of the bike business (a shame) and will concentrate on the trailer market.

Just a quick note. I got a T1000 for my brother, which shares the T2000 frame but with a lower component spec. He and his wife love it. No question the Santana is a first class ride (as is Co-Motion). But for the price, I think you'd be hard pressed to beat the Trek. P.S. Despite the fact that I work for a Trek dealer, I don't own one and am not a shill for them. I still ride steel!

Anyone out there know the following, please for a 2005 T2000: - 9 or 10speed cassette as standard? - c-to-c distance between bottom brackets -recommended carbon fork upgrade? My T2000 is in England and I want to do stuff to it when I go there in June but I can't remember if it's 9 or 10 speed. Thanks in advance.

Review: Trek Fetch+ 2

One of the things that can be intimidating about buying a cargo ebike is how unfamiliar they feel. Whether a bike is designed with weird geometry and wheel sizes or odd features for heavy hauling, every ride can feel unfamiliar.

For traditional cyclists who want to haul a grocery store trip’s worth of groceries home but don’t want to mess with technology they’re unfamiliar with, the Trek Fetch+ 2 is a decent option. It’s more expensive than some of our favorite alternatives, but it has an easy-to-ride step-through design, well-made components, and great plastic buckets (and other accessories) for storage.

There are bikes with more advanced features for the money, but even after I spent a summer riding the Fetch+ 2, it barely needed a tune-up. For a modern cargo ebike with a classic cargo bike maintenance schedule, it might be worth spending a bit more cash.

On the Road

The Fetch+ 2 is the smaller of Trek’s two latest cargo ebikes, which includes the box-fronted Fetch+ 4 ($8,500) , which is more oriented toward toting around dogs and children in between groceries and beer.

The Fetch+ 2 instead is a more traditional step-through cargo bike that employs a myriad of attachments, most notably two plastic panniers that hang off an extended rack on the rear. You can get a padded seat cover for the rear to let friends hold on and ride, or mount a couple kids’ seats behind you, but I’d still probably use this bike more for errands than transporting little ones.

Side view of black and silver bike with 2 containers attached near the rear wheel and 2 containers attached near the...

As an objet d’art , the bike is simple and unassuming, which is ideal for a bike this expensive. The battery is integrated into the frame, but a sizable bulge means nobody will fail to notice it's an ebike. You can get it in three colors. I liked the black of our review unit, but the bright blue would probably be my choice if I was buying one.

While much of the bike will be familiar to anyone who has ever seen or contemplated a cargo bike, Trek really gets the geometry and style of this bike correct as far as making it very usable for many tasks. Even the dual-sided kickstand pops up and down with remarkable ease (shockingly rare on other large ebikes I've used). I particularly enjoyed using the rear panniers for hauling flats of berries and other easily squished items that tend to rattle around in softer panniers.

The panniers fit a ton of stuff; I was able to get four full-size grocery bags spread between the two black plastic totes. I like that they had little plugs in the bottom that you could feasibly use a plastic bag to cover and then fill them with ice and drinks.

I spent a couple months using the Fetch+ 2 as my primary bike, and came away much more impressed than anticipated, given the specs and the price.

On paper, this is an expensive ebike to have pretty standard mid-drive cargo bike specs. The 85 Nm Bosch motor and 500-wH battery are good for 20-plus miles a day loaded down in any city, but they’re not better than models like the larger Xtracycle Stoker, which has the same torque and a 630-wH battery for $4,999. The Trek also doesn’t have a carbon belt drive and variable transmission, which we consider the best (and easiest to maintain) shifting mechanism for cargo bikes.

Overhead view of bike handlebars

The more traditional chain-and-gears drivetrain and no suspension make this a less comfortable and more difficult-to-maintain bike than favorites like the Tern GSD ( 8/10, WIRED Recommends ), which costs about the same. I have to say, I was expecting the difference in riding experience to be more severe. The fatter-than-usual 20 x 2.35-inch tires of the Trek absorbed potholes better than other suspensionless bikes. It also stopped just as well as its competitors, thanks to hydraulic disc brakes.

Mid-drive cargo bikes are much better than their rear-hub counterparts, especially when toting larger items or smaller humans, because they allow you to get more torque to the wheels, and provide a more traditional riding experience. I never found myself lacking for power, though I did crunch through the gears a bit when starting on a hill.

The Fetch+ 2 rides really well, with a solid frame and no creaks or sketchiness of any kind (as picked up from my local Trek dealer, another plus of ordering from the brand), and I really liked how bright the built-in lights were when riding home from soccer games and band practices at night. The fat wheels were easy to turn, giving this a turning radius similar to a non-extended ebike when I was making U-turns in the city. It also has a built-in phone mount with a wireless charger, which makes it really nice for using a map app to cruise to unfamiliar places.

Side view of grey and black bike with small rack over the rear tire

It’s not a fun bike to ride in the traditional sense; it’s not the fastest or the most comfortable, but it is satisfyingly robust and confidence-inducing. In my months of riding, I never had a single issue with the bike. That’s unusual given the state of some of the roads I often took the Fetch+ 2 on the side of, and a testament to Trek's great build quality.

If I was a longtime Trek owner and interested in getting into cargo ebikes, I’d certainly give this line a look, with the understanding that I might find something I like better from Tern, Xtracycle, or another brand for the same price—or something from Rad Power Bikes or another more affordable direct-to-consumer manufacturer for less. It’s a well-made bike that does what it claims to do, but it’s on the spendy side.

It is a bit hard to come by, at least in bike shops around my hometown of Portland, Oregon. If you’re interested in this one for your treks around town, I’d make sure to call ahead for a test ride. If you want a familiar-feeling bike with all the frills of electrification, it’s worth a spin.
