To compare a local sale to an eBay sale, you should add the cost of shipping to the eBay price. A low value bike can be hard to sell on eBay for top dollar if the bike is to be shipped, as that can add $50 or more to the price.

Craigslist.org can provide some information about current prices. However, these are asking prices, not the actual price for which the bike was sold. One can search by region on the Craigslist.org site. One can search for an item on Craigslist overall (not just by region). Use a search engine (Google or Yahoo etc.) and include "Craigslist" as the first keyword. Follow this by what you are looking for. For example "Craigslist Trek 760".

A very rough measure of current selling price is to multiply the original selling price by a percentage. See the price information above for prices of many Treks when new. For bikes 1976 to about 1983, one can use a range of 40% to 70% for a bike. For bikes from about 1984 to 1990, one can use 33% to 50% of the original selling price. This is for bikes with good to excellent paint and in good to excellent overall condition. Condition is very important. A bike in mint condition will sell well above these ranges, perhaps at or above the original price when new. A bike in poor condition, especially one with significant rust inside and out, has little value.

The percentage for selling frames is higher than for bikes because the frames are less outdated than old components. For frames 1976 to 1983, one can use a range of 40% to 100%. For frames from about 1984 to 1990, one can use 33% to 80% of the original selling price. This is for frames in good to excellent overall condition.

The bike values above are useful only if the potential buyer is a person who appreciates a vintage lightweight or specifically, a vintage Trek. A vintage road bike offered at a garage sale might never be sold, even for a ridiculously low price, because it is unlikely the right buyer will come along. Value can vary by season . Road bikes typically sell for more money and more quickly in the Spring and early Summer. An exception is for local sales in regions that don't have cold or rainy Fall and Winter seasons. Another exception is high end collector bikes, which tend to be season independent.

SMALL VINTAGE LIGHTWEIGHT BIKES SELL FOR LESS?

Smaller vintage road frames/bikes often do not sell for as much as a larger version of the same frame. This is true of the 21” (54cm) size and especially the 19” (48cm) frames. Nineteen inch frames/bikes can sell at a discount of up to 40% over their larger brethren. The lesser value is easily demonstrated; for example, by looking at eBay selling prices. (An exception to this general rule is for classic French and Italian bikes, which are highly valued by [older] Japanese collectors.)

Why would this be? Certainly Trek sold bikes of these sizes to willing buyers in the late 1970s and early to mid 1980s at the same price as for larger bikes. There must have been the right number of smaller men, women and kids to buy them. Are Americans that much bigger now? A recent scientific study says no. Certainly most kids, as they grow up and need larger bikes, will pass through these size ranges.

I believe older bikes are bought and kept by people interested in fixing or working on them. These owners need a bit of expertise to get the bikes properly back on the road or keep them on the road (or even just to keep them in a collection). It also takes effort and knowledge to locate replacement parts. New riders tend to buy new bikes and only slowly (if at all) learn how to repair them. For parents to buy a used bike for their (smaller) children, requires that the parents be bike savvy, which eliminates lots of potential small bike users. Bike repair and maintenance generally do not interest women (there are major exceptions to this rule), who are a major fraction of people who would use the smaller bikes.

Even if a person wanted to have a shop maintain their classic Nuovo Record, Super Record, or SunTour Superbe-equipped bike, the shops with that knowledge are rare and the parts cannot be bought from their typical suppliers.

The good news, for those of us built close to the ground, is that we can buy vintage lightweight bikes at favorable prices.

The bike is super reliable. The only issue we have ever had is the brakes need adjusting, and maybe the rims, but that is to be expected on a 25 year old bike.

The v brake setup needs to be adjusted because they will slowly move back and forth and sometimes rub on the rim.

Our Trek Antelope 800 was a wedding gift that my parents purchased when they got married, they got it as a Christmas present. Our 1993 Antelope 800 has over 6,000 miles on it, and is still rolling. Trek bicycles are built for quality and reliability, and I will be keeping my Antelope 800 for years to come. I am purchasing an 820 in December, and I am so excited for the matte black color. By the way, the green on the Antelope is awesome!

My grandfather bought this bike new in 96' gave it to me in 98' to take to college. I have been riding it ever since. The only thing I have ever replaced are tubes and tires. I changed out the old knobby tires for some smooth road tires. Always shifts smooth and rides straight. I have always kept it in a garage or basment. No rust at all. I just took it into the trek store for its first ever tune up, cleaning and lube in 15 years. It now looks and rides like it is brand new. I thought about upgrading to a new Trek FX 7.1, but this bike just rides so nice I cant do it and after 15 years I have become a little attached. Best Bike i have ever owned. It would have to be destroyed or stolen for me to get a new one. This is a very solid well built bike. Thanks for the 15 years of fun Trek, looking forward to 15 more.

I like my Trek Antelope 800. It was bought in 1991 and now it's 2012. The bike frame is tough and many people who know about bikes have all commented on the excellent welding job and how it's not visible. My bike has endured a house fire and all the rubber and plastic pieces had to be replaced. I live in Montreal Canada and i ride all year round, summer and winter. In 1991, the store was saying the bike usually sells for $800. but we bought two because they were having a sale and were selling each bike for half price at $400. This bike has been to hell and back. I wore out the derailleur and front crank twice. I am on my third chain. I wore out the hand grips twice. Both wheels had to be replaced because the bearings were finished and the wheels got warped after years of hard riding. I bought higher handle bars because i dislike the high-seat low-handle bars idea. I put fenders on the bike and a rack in the back for saddle-bag and i use it for shopping and everything.

The only weakness i can think off were the forks that had to be changed once. What had happened is i saw a cute woman and i was not looking where i was riding and a i hit a car bumper waiting at a red light. I wasn't going fast at all but the result was that my front tire was touching the frame after the hit. Another time, the goose neck cracked inside. But these two incidents happened only after i had the bike for year and years. The gear changer for the crack side of the gears just recently lost it's 1 2 3 dial, but the gears still change alright. The bike is much lighter than most CCM and Supercycle bikes.

Great bike for 1991.I am sure there are better bike nowadays but i see the welding is very noticeable on most bikes i look at these days.

Strong Frame, Good Quality Components, Nimble Handling

No Suspension

I bought this bike in 1997 and got a discount off of the MSRP. I rode the S?$# out of this bike on the forest preserve trails for 5 years, and then stored it for 8 in my unheated garage. When I pulled it out to start getting some exersise again, all it needed was a good cleaning, air in the tires, and some minor adjustments. Wanted a suspension bike since I am getting older (50) and picked up a 1997 Y5 cheap. Gave the 800 Sport to my sister and she is still riding it.

nvm moscow throttle

Finding my (electric) wheels

hi everyone, im new to the forum and have come with a question about the ncm moscow, i have owned the bike for over a year now and seen that the moscow plus has a throttle fitted to it, does anyone know if its possible to fit one to the normal moscow and if so where to purchase what i need in the uk as i cannot find anything about it at all. thank you

i will get some pictures tomorrow, i know its a sealed unit and one wire goes to the pedal crank and another goes away inside the frame

All I see is a BB shell with two cables running under it.

its a sealed unit fixed to the frame, there is no way of getting into it i dont think

In that case then a throttle can't be retrofitted if there isn't an unused three wire connection.

The Oxygen ST uses a similar frame which is likely a generic China/Taiwan frame utilised by other companies with different components and motor kits, the Oxygen is throttle capable.

Kommunikation zwischen C7 Display und Motorkontroller NCM Venice+ Das-Kit

An lcd won't enable you to fit a throttle, you need a controller with the wired out put for one as well as the PAS out put. One can't be used for the other.
