Trek Superfly 100 AL Elite 29er review

Long-legged, big-wheeled trail cruiser

Arguably the most significant feature of Trek’s Superfly 100 AL Elite is tucked away behind the seat tube. It’s a Gary Fisher signature decal, signifying that this bike is, in genesis at least, the inspiration of one of mountain biking’s founding fathers – and the inventor of the 29er concept.

The AL Elite props up the bottom of the five-strong, 29in-wheeled Superfly 100 range, offering a trail-worthy spec at a price that just creeps over the magic £2k barrier. Great handling, sorted suspension performance, decent components and epic mud clearance make for big-wheeled trail fun. The Trek looks a tiny bit pricey compared to some of the competition, though.

Ride & handling: Fast rolling, great handling trail machine that’ll tackle anything you can throw at it

Big wheels only really look in proportion when they’re connected to a big frame. So our 17.5in test bike, in common with most 29ers around this size, has that slightly disconcerting effect of looking… well, not quite right at first glance. It’s only because we’re all used to smaller wheels, and we only mention it because that ‘not quite right’ feeling disappears the moment you climb aboard the Trek and turn the pedals.

From just-so weight distribution to a wheelbase that’s pretty much the identical twin of 26in-wheeled competitors and a front wheel that goes where you want it to, the Superfly 100 will have uninitiated riders forgetting about the big wheels within the first few minutes. Which is, when you think about it, about the biggest compliment we can pay it. Get on, ride, and enjoy the easy-rolling nature of 29er wheels.

Fox shocks with a high compression damping tune can make a bike feel constipated over small bumps. Not here. The big wheels certainly help, but the Superfly’s suspension remains supple and controlled on everything from technical climbs to flat-out descents. If we were to split hairs, we’d suggest that the front end is a tiny bit slower to respond in fast-changing situations, but that’s the laws of physics for you – more rotating mass, further from the centre of the wheel. There’s nothing anyone – not even Gary Fisher himself – can do about that.

Big wheels with 100mm of travel translate into fast, efficient and comfortable mile-munching. We’ve known that for a while, but what the Superfly 100 does so well is to iron out all the little niggles that have beset earlier attempts at big wheeled full-suspension nirvana. The geometry works, the handling is excellent, the weight is reasonable in an unexceptional kind of a way and there’s even decent mud clearance. Is it the best 29er full-susser available? No. But it’s well worth putting on your shortlist.

Frame & equipment: We wish the frame finish was a bit neater, particularly around the welded areas

Cramming big wheels into a bike offering 100mm of travel at each end isn’t straightforward. There’s less space for most components, a greater need to pay attention to geometry and a number of stiffness-related issues to deal with. Trek’s design team have been sweating the details, resulting in a frame that’s bristling with mostly subtle design solutions.

Fitting the frame tubes into the available space is arguably one of their less successful achievements, the conjoined top and down tubes necessitating large – and, it has to be said, not particularly tidy – welds. Never mind that, though, because all the functional stuff has been taken care of.

Trek’s Active Braking Point (ABP) pivot – which places the chainstay pivot around the hub’s rear axle – is here in versatile ‘Convert’ form, meaning that the standard 135x5mm rear axle can be switched to a stiffer, lighter 142x12mm design at a later date. A Bontrager-designed hub with widened, bigger diameter flanges and larger dropout contact area performs the same job up front.

The Superfly 100’s fork uses a crown with increased offset, which reduces trail (the distance between the front tyre’s contact point on the ground and the point where a straight line through the centre of the head tube also meets the ground) and sharpens steering responses, countering the 29er tendency to be slow-handling in the turns. Carefully shaped stays wrap cleverly around the rear tyre, giving this bike the best mud clearance we’ve yet seen on a big wheeled machine.

In common with many full-suspension designs the Superfly 100 struggles to accommodate a pair of standard bottle cage bosses. There’s one set in the usual place on top of the down tube but the second set has been shunted into a position right in line with the spray off the front wheel, under the down tube. You could put a bottle there, but you probably wouldn’t want to.

A Fox Float RP2 shock matches the fork nicely and clip-on sag indicators make the job of getting the right air pressure front and rear straightforward. Predominantly Shimano SLX-based components work well and should prove reliable and Bontrager finishing kit is all top-notch, although we’d swap the tyres for something with more grip if you ride a lot in wet conditions.

Trek Supercaliber

Forget about the hardtail vs. full-suspension debate. The Supercaliber has 100mm up front and 60mm at the rear for the perfect balance between race pace and shock absorption.

The Top Fuel is a short-travel 29er that hits the sweet spot between trail bike and cross-country racer. This model is ideal for riders that shred the mountain in both directions— the Top Fuel climbs better than a trail bike and outperforms standard XC machines on the rough stuff.

The lightweight full-suspension setup preserves snappy handling so you can go fast with confidence. The updated Top Fuel model is more capable on the downhills than its predecessor and has adjustable geometry via a flip chip. The latest generation comes with Knock Block 2.0 to protect the top tube in the event of a crash— now removable and with a wider turning radius.

The all-new Top Fuel has a 66° head tube angle that's 1.5° slacker than the previous generation and has 10mm more reach, a killer combo for a more stable ride at high speeds. Toggle between High and Low frame geometry settings on the go with the Mino Link.

Pair a rear shock to a standard-travel XC fork and you’ve got an all-mountain beast that stays nimble and efficient. The high anti-squat maintains snappy pedaling for great acceleration on the climbs.

Now all Top Fuel models— both alloy and carbon— come with a built-in storage solution inside the downtube to easily carry tools or snacks. Riders can use the compatible Bontrager BITS tool bag for additional organization.

Trek Fuel EX

One of Trek’s most popular models, the Fuel EX is a do-it-all-well trail bike that’s designed to go anywhere. The mid-length travel is plenty capable on the rough stuff and isn’t overkill on the more moderate routes. This workhorse is perfect for riders that traverse a variety of terrain and want an all-mountain companion. The Fuel EX runs 29” wheels on the larger frames and has 27.5” hoops on XS and S sizes and the carbon models come with a neat storage compartment in the downtube.

RE:aktiv is Trek’s exclusive rear shock that responds differently to pedal strokes and bumpy terrain to optimize suspension out on the trail. Select Fuel EX models come with the higher-end RE:aktiv Thru Shaft shock.

The Fuel EX comes as a 29er on larger frame sizes and runs 27.5” wheels on XS and S frames. No matter your height, there’s a tuned geometry that’s right for you.

The Active Braking Pivot retains suspension performance under braking and the Mino Link lets riders alter frame geometry with a flick of a switch. Knock Block protects the frame in the case of a crash.

Trek Remedy

The Remedy is your one-stop-shop when it comes to a long-travel trail bike for aggressive riding. This model is light on its feet thanks to agile 27.5” wheels so you can whip around technical terrain and smash tight corners. There’s no lack of travel here with 160mm at the front and 150mm in the back. The Remedy has similar suspension specs as the 29er Slash, but provides sharper handling that transforms any mountain into a playground. If you’ve got a soft spot for tricky descents, this bike is a sure bet.

Conquer the wildest terrain with this long-travel 29er enduro bike. The Slash is built for enduro racing, but it’s fearless on the chunkier bumps and jumps of downhill parks, too. Beauty meets beast with this eye-catching MTB with its serious suspension package— 160mm of travel up front and 150mm in the rear. The lively frame is available in carbon or aluminum versions and stays damage-free thanks to Knock Block 2.0 technology.

Engineers from Trek and RockShox collaborated on the enduro-tuned rear suspension that responds to trail inputs rather than rider pedal strokes for more accurate compression on the roughest terrain.

The most recent Slash includes 10mm of extra travel front and rear and improved geometry specs to match. The frame is now longer and slacker for additional stability in steep-and-chunky terrain, even at high speeds.

Who said electric mountain bikes couldn’t be lightweight? The all-new Trek E-Caliber fits full-suspension and a powerful Fazua motor into a slim setup. The sleek E-Caliber provides extra watts on XC circuits so you can ride longer and close the gap to stronger riders. There are three assist modes to match any conditions and optimize battery range. Big things can come in small packages and this supercharged XC model knows no limits.

The Powerfly electric mountain bike features serious horsepower and a plush suspension setup to take your adventures to the next level. Cranked out: The Trek Superfly FS 9

Primed For Adventure Or The Podium

Being at the forefront of the 29er movement, Trek’s Superfly FS was one of the first full-suspension, cross-country, 29-inch bikes that just felt right. While it has continued to evolve, we wondered if our initial love for the Superfly FS would be reignited with the FS 9.

WHO IS IT MADE FOR? The FS 9 is Trek’s top-tier aluminum offering in the Superfly FS family. As such, it’s designed for cross-country riders and racers looking for a bike that’s ready to pin it straight out of the box, without jumping wallet-first into the world of carbon fiber.

WHAT IS IT MADE FROM? Trek uses its Alpha Platinum aluminum for the Superfly FS’s front and rear triangles. The frame features Trek’s E2 tapered headtube, 142-millimeter rear thru-axle design, PressFit bottom bracket, and internal cable routing.

The Superfly FS rides on 3.9 inches of Trek’s Active Braking Pivot (ABP) suspension, which uses a concentric pivot at the rear axle to keep the suspension active under braking forces.

WHICH COMPONENTS STAND OUT? Trek plays it smart with the FS 9 by spec’ing Shimano XT components throughout. From the brakes to the 2×10 drivetrain featuring the Shadow Plus rear derailleur, Shimano XT provides superb performance for a group of any price.

RockShox has the suspension spec covered with a SID RL fork up front and a Monarch RL rear shock. Both have external rebound adjustments, and the fork has a handlebar-mounted lockout remote lever.

HOW DOES IT PERFORM? Set Up: Getting the suspension sag dialed-in on the Superfly is a quick process thanks to RockShox’s patented sag gradients right on the fork stanchion and shock body. For a balanced cross-country feel, we settled on a firm-ish 25-percent sag.

Ergonomics: We’ve always seemed to feel right at home on Trek’s Superfly models from the moment we swung a leg over the top tube. The FS 9 was no exception. The Superfly features a fairly aggressive rider position without feeling uncomfortably weighted over the handlebars. While the top tube feels fairly short for a large frame, Trek spec’s a long enough stem to allow some room in the cockpit.

Pedaling: The shock features two damping settings: locked and unlocked. With the shock unlocked, there is minimal movement under pedaling forces, and while a racer may look for a firmer platform, we appreciated the small amount of movement to help soak up bumps and keep the rear wheel tracking over loose sections of trail. We only found ourselves using the lockout lever on the road to and from the trail and on long fire road climbs.

Climbing: For an aluminum, full-suspension bike, the Superfly FS is a snappy climber thanks to a relatively low weight and fast-rolling Bontrager XR-1 tires. While we rarely use fork lockouts, during out-of-the-saddle efforts on smooth climbs, the remote fork lockout was quite useful and convenient.

Cornering: Trek has long talked about its G2 29er-specific geometry–and for good reason. The Superfly feels confident through fast, sweeping corners while still maintaining a quick feel around tight switchbacks—an ability many 29ers can’t claim. The low-profile tires that help the Superfly rocket up climbs require some restraint??? when trail conditions are especially loose.

Descending: Trek’s ABP suspension does a great job of getting the most out of the bike’s 3.9-inches of travel, and the bike’s G2 geometry helps it tackle descents with more confidence than many bikes in its class. The RockShox SID fork did a good job eating up small and large bumps alike and felt very balanced with the rear suspension—a trait we’ve come to expect from Trek.

Braking: As advertised, Trek’s ABP suspension design is one of the best when it comes to isolating suspension performance from braking forces. When paired with Shimano’s XT brakes, it’s a perfect match.

TRICKS, UPGRADES OR TIPS? After a flat tire on the first ride out, we were quickly reminded why we’re such big advocates for going tubeless. While many cross-country riders may still prefer narrower handlebars, we think something in the 28-inch range—not much wider than stock—would improve the overall feel of the bike.

BUYING ADVICE Trek’s Superfly FS is a bike that has always seemed to work for us. Whether you’re a cross-country racer or a trail rider looking for a fast and agile bike, the Superfly’s balanced ride characteristics will likely suit you. With a parts spec that leaves nothing to be desired, the FS 9 is ready for an all-day epic or the podium, right out of the box.

‍ One of the best entry-level bikes that Trek ever made was the Alpha 1.1. Even though Trek no longer produces this gem, the bike still has plenty to offer.

Made from 2011 - 2017, the Trek Alpha 1.1 sought to attract a new generation of riders to the love of cycling. The Alpha was the least expensive of the Trek lineup, which helped it achieve a reputation for being a great value. The bike was known for being lightweight, fast, and very durable.

Battling years of negative press, Trek Bicycle Corporation found itself in full-blown damage control in early 2010. Their alleged involvement in doping plagued them (which their team leader, Lance Armstrong, admitted to using a couple of years later), coupled with a very public lawsuit over the leadership of Lemond Cycles had left a sour taste in the hearts of the public. To counter its tarnished public image, Trek introduced an entry-level bicycle to try and attract new riders. Their mission was to produce a higher quality road racer without the expensive price tag. So, to accomplish this task, Trek applied its research data and design experience to the task and worked with its far eastern counterparts to produce a lightweight, durable bike that could go very fast.

‍ What’s So Special about the Trek Alpha 1.1?

The Trek Alpha is now only available used, mainly on eBay or with some bike dealers who have a good consignment program.

The Alpha 1.1 was a Quality Build.

Even though the 1.1 was designed at Waterloo, Wisc (where Trek headquarters are located), the bike was not assembled inside the US. While many Americans prefer items produced in the good old US of A, the fact that Trek continued to use its factories in China and elsewhere isn’t necessarily wrong.

For years, Trek had depended on these builders to consistently produce many high-end premium road racers. Using these same workers meant that the bikes would likely show a high degree of excellence, precisely what Trek needed to combat an increasingly agitated riding community.

The frame was made from aluminum tubing with an attractive glossy finish. Even though carbon fiber was becoming all the rage for high-end performance bicycles, aluminum was a much cheaper resource. The primary benefit of an aluminum frame is that it provides excellent strength qualities while at the same time costing less, meaning that the bicycle price can be contained. Trek used its extensive racing research to push the aluminum frame to the limit, keeping the weight down while still holding onto the structural rigidity needed for most riders.

The folks at Trek must have felt pretty good about the frame because they offered a lifetime warranty with every purchase, which was virtually unheard of at the time.

The Trek Alpha 1.1 utilized the traditional H2 top-tube sloping, which is supposed to be the optimal riding position (according to Trek’s research). The steep upright angle of the tube enhances the rider's overall comfort, making it easier for cyclists to stay on task and enjoy the ride. The designers knew that the more comfortable the ride, the longer a cyclist would stay on their bike, which is precisely what the company wanted. The design shows how committed Trek folks were to fashioning a bike to appeal to a wide range of buyers.

Shimano Claris shifters and derailleurs provide the effective movement of gears when needed. Most bike reviews indicate the ride is soft, with no issues moving up and down hills through the gear ratios. While the eight gears might have been less than a professional racer would use, it is more than adequate for normal cycling. (The aluminum frame adds extra weight that might create issues for riders attacking inclines).

The wheels are Bontrager AT-750 double-walled alloy rims with 700c x 25 tires. The narrow tires lend themselves to increased speed and reliable handling when navigating corners.

Interestingly enough, the Bontrager is Trek’s primary tire supplier, and the tire is manufactured in Waterloo, Wisc. The Alpha 1.1 also has room for wider tires for additional grip on wet or muddy surfaces. There is also room for a rear rack or mudguards should their installation be necessary.

The shifter and rear brake cables are run alongside the downtube and provide effective braking and shifting. Most professional bikes run the cables inside the center tube to minimize wind drag and increase aerodynamics. However, the Alpha 1.1 seems content to run the brakes alongside the tubing rather than inside. (My preference is inside the tubing, as an integrated cable system, but this requires additional attention during the manufacturing process and increases the cost). Trek went with a parallel cable system to save dollars during the manufacturing process, and this is a win for the casual rider, who isn’t worried about shaving second off a stage time.

The seat is also a Bontrager Affinity which is soft enough to add comfort without discomfort on longer rides.

The Alpha 1.1 was the Least Expensive Bike Trek Made.

When it was introduced, the Alpha 1.1 was offered as the best value in bikes. Trek saw a need to create a market for new riders. By keeping the manufacturing costs to a minimum (including cheaper labor costs overseas), the company decided to pass those savings along to potential buyers.

The bike was priced well below the $500 mark, which made it easily affordable for most families. Now, the average American who felt the urge to channel their inner Lance Armstrong could have a bike similar to the Trek-Segafredo pro team used.

The Alpa 1.1 Performed Very Well

It didn’t take long for the researcher of the Alpha to discover that those who purchased the bike and rode it loved it. The reviews recognize that the short wheelbase made for a bike that was quick enough to chew up the pavement, handle well while cornering, and stay in control on the wet or less-than-perfect pavement.

The earliest renditions of the Alpha 1.1 had an aluminum fork and frame that tended not to dampen the bumps and jolts of imperfect road surfaces. While carbon forks and frames do a better job smoothing out the pavement, this complaint was not enough to make riders consider other models or take the Alpha off their list. However, the later model year Alpha (2017) shows a Trek carbon fork, which helped with some of the complaints about the ride. (Again, my preference here is to have an adjustable fork that allows the rider to quickly switch to suspension settings to handle rougher terrain, but this was something the folks at Trek were unwilling to do on their early road racers).

There have been some complaints as to the weight of the bike, but these were primarily complaints by riders who were used to riding a carbon-fiber frame. For these riders, the bike’s ride might seem chunky, particularly on steep inclines, where the additional weight can quickly come into play. Even though the bike may be harder to move uphill than other competing road bikes, the ride is just about what you might expect for its price point.

Why Did Trek Stop Making the Alpha 1.1?

For several years, the Trek Alpha 1.1 was a trendy bike for the company. Still, unfortunately, after the initial excitement for the bike wore off, Trek realized that buyers were flocking to other competitors producing better bikes. The emergence of smaller bike companies pushed Trek to drop Alpha 1.1 in favor of other lines, such as the FX series or the Emonda lineup.

At about the same time, Trek and Segafredo partnered to sponsor an International Racing Team. In 2022, the team has over 31 riders on the men’s side and 14 riders on the women's. The teams dominate the racing circuit and are almost always on the leaderboards.

Where Can I Purchase an Alpha 1.1?

Even though Trek still carries an image of the 1.1 on its website, the bike is not available to be shipped from the company. The only way to secure an Alpha 1.1 is through eBay, or another online site selling used bikes.

Even though Trek no longer produces the Alpha 1.1, the company still has a wide selection of bicycles for every discipline. The company makes a Marlin series, an excellent beginner bike for mountain and trail riding. Trek suggests the Edmonda series or the FX-1 for an entry-level bike for road riding. Trek also has a large selection of electric bikes. The FX+ is priced at around $2500, while the Domaine+ SLR retails for around $8500. which are not cheap but are great rides nonetheless. The following section will cover some of the most important things to consider when choosing. Remember, you can purchase a bike that almost fits your requirements and make changes to the build kit to enhance or modify performance. 

The Type of Riding You Do and Your Technical Abilities

The type of trails and terrain you intend on riding is the most important consideration when choosing a full-suspension mountain bike. Selecting a model that doesn’t leave you feeling under or over-biked is crucial. 

Dual-suspension bikes fall into five broad categories that match the difficulty and characteristics of the trails. Of course, your technical mountain biking skills should also influence your decision. Which Wheels Should I Choose?

Wheels have a massive impact on how a MTB rides. Variable like wheel size, material, and design influence the ride feel. For example, you can choose a bike with 26″, 27.5″, or 29″ wheels, each of which has different characteristics.

The bigger a wheel is, the more speed it can gain and maintain. In addition, you get more traction and stability on larger wheels. In contrast, smaller wheels accelerate faster, are more maneuverable, and are lighter.

Steel, aluminum, and carbon wheels also have different properties, carbon being the lightest and stiffest but also the most expensive. On the other hand, aluminum wheels are cheaper but aren’t as light or stiff.

Finally, rim width is another consideration. Wider rims allow you to run wider tires or get more traction from your current tires. 

Which Tires Should I Choose?

Tires are the most influential component that you can change quickly and easily. Riders can choose different widths, tread depths and patterns, material thicknesses and characteristics, and between tubeless and tubed tires (if the wheels are tubeless-ready).

Frame Materials Explained

Almost all full-suspension mountain bicycles are carbon fiber or aluminum. Carbon is undoubtedly the best frame material if the price isn’t an issue. Getting to grips with 2018 Trek mountain bikes

If you pop over to Trek’s website and click on ‘mountain bikes’ more than 120 bikes appear in front of you. It’s rather daunting. Choice is good but can be bewildering. So we’ve boiled Trek’s MTB range down to the basics to get you started.

What type of bike do you want?

We think it’s best to split the whole range into three categories and then go from there: hardtail , full suspension and electric .

What type of riding will you be doing?

Once you’ve chosen one of the three categories you can refine it to the type of riding you want to do: cross-country, trail or downhill.

With those two category types chosen you’ll be left with a much smaller pool of Trek models to consider.

We’re going to assume that you already know the type of mountain bike you want. We’re not going to go into any debates or theorising (hardtail vs full suspension, 27.5 vs 29 , Plus vs Fat etc etc).

Trek hardtails

There are five hardtail models in Trek’s range: Marlin, X-Caliber, Roscoe, Procaliber and Stache.

Trek use their own proprietary frame materials. Their aluminium stuff is called Alpha. Their carbon stuff is called OCLV.

Some of their high end hardtails have the ‘IsoSpeed Decoupler’ configuration where the seat tube is designed to flex for compliance.

The Trek Marlin is an entry level cross-country focussed hardtail ranging from £370 up to £550. Thee are four models in total (the Marlin 4, 5, 6 and 7). The frame is Trek’s ‘Silver Alpha’ aluminium.

The Trek X-Caliber cross-country range starts from £650 and tops out at £1,150. The frame is Trek’s ‘Gold Alpha’ aluminium. The frames have internal routing for stealth dropper seatposts. The components are of a higher quality than the Marlins.

The Trek Roscoe range of Plus-tyred trail hardtails running from £800 to £ 1,250. The frame has internal routing for dropper posts and is made from Trek’s ‘Alpha Gold’ aluminium.

The £1,300 to £6,500(!) Trek Procaliber cross-country race bike range can look a a bit confusing; there are aluminium Procalibers, OCLV carbon Procalibers and Super Light OCLV Procalibers. Although the frame material varies the intent of Procalibers is the same: xc racing. The geometry remains the same. All Procalibers have the ‘IsoSpeed Decoupler’ feature of deliberate flex.

The Trek Stache bikes are rather unique in that they are 29er Plus bikes. They roll on some seriously large rubber! Monster trucking hardtails. Price: £1,300 to £3,500.

Trek full suspension bikes

There are five Trek full susser types: Fuel EX, Remedy, Top Fuel, Slash and Session.

All Trek full sus bikes use a version of the ‘ABP’ suspension design. ABP stands for Active Braking Pivot. The rear wheel axle is also the rear pivot. The idea is to prevent the suspension from locking up during rear braking.

Fuel EX, Remedy and Top Fuel bikes also have RE:aktiv rear shock damping. This damping design claims to ‘know’ which forces are coming from the pedals/rider and which forces are coming from the trail, and it reacts accordingly.

The Trek Fuel EX 130mm travel, full sus, all-rounder, trail bikes come as either 29er or as 27.5 Plus. They can be run with either wheel size but are initially purchased with one or the other. Starting from £1,800 for aluminium versions they top out at £6,500 for the top end carbon version.

The Trek Remedy is the 150mm travel trail-cum-enduro bike. Prices range from £2,300 to £6,000. There are aluminium Remedy models and carbon fibre Remedy models. For 2018 they are all 27.5in wheel.

The Trek Top Fuel bikes are full suspension XC race machines. 100mm of travel at either end. Begins with the aluminium Top Fuel 8 for £2,400 and goes up to the £7,800 carbon Top Fuel 9.9 RSL.

The 160mm travel enduro racing Trek Slash range is all 29in wheels and carbon only for 2018. It’s a bold move by Trek but one that makes the Slash arguably the most defined model in their range.

The Trek Session is the downhill bike. Aluminium or carbon. And now available as a frameset as a 29er with 190mm of travel. Complete build Sessions are all 27.5in wheel and deliver 210mm of rear travel.

There are three electric mountain bike types: Powerfly, Powerfly FS and Powerfly LT Plus.

The Trek Powerfly hardtails start at £2,300 and go up to £3,300. Aluminium frames with 100mm travel forks up front. The motors come from Bosch. There is also a £4,200 Powerfly Plus with 2.8in tyres.

On the Trek Powerfly FS bikes the ‘FS’ stands for Full Suspension, 130mm of suspension to be precise. The Powerfly FS bikes are aimed at cross-country riding with a bit of rougher stuff every now and then. All but the entry level £3,500 Powerfly 5 FS come with Plus tyres.

The Trek Powerfly LT Plus models have more travel (150mm) and fatter tyres (2.8in Plus tyres). These e-bikes are up for a bit more aggro riding and technical trails. Prices: £4,200 to £5,250.

Trek Women’s mountain bikes

Even as stalwarts of the whole Women’s Specific Design thang, Trek (along with most other bike brands) are now seemingly moving away from design theories that assume that women’s body proportions are different to men’s.

Bikes fit humans, not genders. Rider height is the only thing you should really be factoring in when choosing a bike. It really is only saddles that need to be a bit different to men’s.

It’s fine to opt for a supposedly ‘men’s’ Trek model if it fits your height. Get the saddle swapped out for a ladies saddle at time of purchase. Sorted.

Having said that, if you want a Women’s bike because you prefer the different colourway and decals, fair enough.

Climbs like a mountain goat, scary fast flat out

Bontrager chain rings, XL frame broke (replaced), stock wheels braking surface seems weak, the single bolt seatpost was worthless-replaced with Raceface

I love this bike. I am 6'4" 215 pounds. The frame cracked in two places like many of the other XL frames. It was replaced and rebuilt by my LBS in less than two weeks. Great service Trek and Bike Rack! This bike is very fast. I can keep up with guys on road bikes for a few miles if I really try. There is just no wasted motion with pedal bob if you pedal smoothly. Even if you mash it up hills, you just don't feel much bob at all. I am still trying to figure out what stem I need to get fit correctly to the bike. I am a little tall for the current set up and find that my arms and hands get numb after about 1.5 hours of riding. I don't have the problem when I lower the seat down a little but then I don't get the same leg extension. I loved the fork when I first got the bike (Manitou SX-R). I did change the spring out to the stiffest one they make. I am starting to think it is a little too soft for my weight but it is still OK. It soaks up big bumps really well but is a little squirly on fast, bumpy downhill. I used the Fox tuning manual to set up the fork but maybe it still just needs some tuning. It is quite adjustable. If I had $500 to blow, I would put a Fox fork on it. I will live with this one for a few more years anyway. The only real problem I had with the bike was the front chainrings. I thought that they just did not shift well at all. I had the bike tuned up a couple of times at the LBS and it would shift fine on the stand but just stunk when I was on the bike. I put on the 180mm XTR crankset with an XTR front derailleur and now it shifts flawlessly. I find that I actually use all three front gears now. I can heartily recommend this combination. I have two wheelsets now. The Rolf Satellites are plenty strong. I ran flat on, straight into a tree once and did not knock the wheel out of true at all. I could not believe it. I had a few pretty spectacular wrecks last season and did no damage at all to the wheels. Anyway, I left the Bontrager Jones AC's on those wheels and use them for paved trail and crushed limestone riding. Those tires are awesome for hardpack and trail riding. I do not understand why they get bashed so badly by everyone on this site. They do pack up in mud, but so do most tires. They are fantastically fast. My other wheelset is Hugi 240's with Sun Rhynolite rims. These are my offroad wheelset with Panaracer FireXC Pro's. They are a little heavier but are very stiff. The tires are much better for general offroad riding. Don't get me wrong, the Jones AC's are fine on hardpack and damp surface dirt. They just aren't much good when it is wet, sandy or muddy. The Fire XC Pros are much better for those conditions. They suck on paved trails and make an incredible amount of noise. Run the air pressure pretty high and you still get excellent traction. I guess this is a pretty long bottom line. In the end, I can tell you that for me - 6'4" 215 pounds, this bike rocks. It is not made for beating hard on. Get a Liquid Fuel, a Jekyll or something heavier duty for that. This is a race bike. It climbs very well and is really fast. It corners well but not as well as smaller bikes. My friends can pull away from me in the winding sections of track but I can always catch up on the uphills and flat sections. I think when I finish fitting myself properly to the bike, it will corner better also. I don't think you can go wrong with this bike.

Awesome climbing machine. I find climbing with this bike to be easy. Quite often forget I am. Since changing over to disc I've been a little more aggresive. 3 to 4 foot drops pretty big for an old guy. I have blown the seal on my Judy C twice now and lost my front brake because of the leaking oil. Piece of crap. I have since packed it with grease its ok. Saving for a Mars or a Sid ??? If you ride alot a new seat is a must. I ride 150 km week min. and almost died with old seat. Some upgrades are a must but Crane rear shock is wicked. It took me awhile to find my sweeeeet spot but when I did it was like a new bike. take the time to try it at all different settings.With a few more upgrades this is going to be one sweeet ride. Stock its great for beginners and casual riders with upgrades the sky's the limit.(except for those crazy 10 ft plus drop guys)

Rides like a hardtail. No bob.

It is the loudest bike on the planet. It pops, rattles, creeks and snaps. Literally It feels like the thing is falling apart right out from under you. The frame cracked on me right above the top beed weld on he seat tube and i wasn't taking any five foot drops. I am currently dealing with trek to fix the situation. I will guide you during our travels with this particular issue.

I Baught a santa cruz superlight and will probably never go back. If you want a bike that rides like a hardtail, buy a hardtail. If you want a good feeling full suspension bike, I dont recomend the trek fuel. Trek fuel only has 3inchs of rear travel, It has alot of pivots, (that have to be maintained) The frame size runs big. Make sure you have set on one before you buy it. And last but not least. I was in the specialized spring classic race event and there was alot of trek fuels and lot of everything else. The fuels weren't doing the winning.

very responsive climber, just enough to take the edge off the bumps

I had a YSL200, I am 220lbs, without locking out the suspension, climbing was lame. I got tired of my buddy blowing me away on climbs with his Sugar1. The handling is quick, well balanced, suspension is great, has lockouts, but really do not need them at all. My 2nd front SID, getting tired of trying to find the sweet spot, but overall very happy with performance. I see a tremendous difference in climbing, the single largest advantage over the old Y. I was really on the fence with the fuel or sugar, the fuel set up fit me a bit better. Overall, I am still amazed at the difference in performance every time I get on it. This is a great XC bike!!

The main triangle broke after only 7 weeks of riding. Trek replaced it and the LBS was quite cooperative (charging me nothing) Tonight the swing arm broke. I hope Trek is as good about the swing arm. In the first year I have had to: 1. Rebuild rear wheel with thicker spokes on nondrive side after many, many broken spokes. 2. Have headset replaced. (warrantied with a WTB which seems cheaper than the Cane Creek S6 that came with it.) 3. Have the Bantrager re5 pedals replaced. (They replaced the $105 pedals with Shimano 515's :( 4. XT Cassette replaced 5. Wheels trued frequently. (Design seems weak but light) 6. Both parts of frame replaced (or need replaced) 7. Rocker arm bolts replaced after one fell out during a ride.

Fun to ride but not real reliable.

Soooo smooooth....just sooo smooooth. Makes me smile just thinking about how this bike feels when Im hauling a little ass. Also, best seat my ass has ever hit.

I cant describe how much I am impressed by this bike. The geometry is a little strange, Im still working out the steep climbs...but thats my issue, not the bikes. No cracks, squeaks, or snaps (knock on wood) yet. Im not the fastest climber, but I really push it on the downhills...performs much better than I expected from an XC bike. Only drawback is the crackset. It needs to be switched...I had some issues with chainsuck when I first got the bike. This problem has not been fixed, I just have learned how/when to switch to the granny gear to keep this from happening. I will replace the cranks and rings this season. Alos, kill the shimano pedals. If you ride in any conditions other than dry pavement, Time is the only way to go. Bottom line, buy the bike if you want to spend $13-1700 on a XC FS bike. Noone makes a better one. Can I give this more than 5 Flamers??
