Trek Verve 2 Disc Review

Today we are going to take a look at Trek Verve 2 which is a budget hybrid bike. It is the second of the Verve series, Trek’s take at recreational hybrid bikes which are built for comfort and versatility. Trek Verve series has three bikes to offer,

The Trek Verve 1 which retails at $530, Verve 2 retailing at $670, and finally Verve 3 retailing at around $820.

I choose to review Trek Verve 2 Disc first, mainly because I think this is a bike many would come to love at the price point. Don’t get me wrong, Verve 1 is already a great bike for what its worth. But for just another $140 you will be getting a lot more of a bike than the base model.

This is a comprehensive rundown of all the features you would expect when getting a Trek Verve 2 and if you are looking for a specific component of the bike use the table of contents below to quickly navigate around the review.

Trek Verve 2 Frame

The frame makes for around 70 percent look and feel of the bike in my opinion and should be a major consideration when you are thinking of getting a bike. Trek Verve 2 comes with an Alpha Gold Aluminum frame, which is top of the line aluminum technology for treks bikes.

The frame ensures a strong ride while still feeling very light and forgiving during the rides. This is something you will quickly come to appreciate the first time you test ride this bike.

The frame is designed for comfort as its priority, as a result the bike as a shorter reach than other traditional fitness bikes. This also ensures that are in a more upright position while riding this thing which is compatible if you have had any issues with your back, neck, or shoulders.

The upright position also makes it easy for you to look around while switching lanes or crossing streets.

Trek Verve 2 is offered in two variants,

  • A standard high-step model which has the diamond frame
  • A low step model which is designed for more clearance and convenience

This bike can also be a good commuter as the frame comes with mounts for racks and fenders. So if you want to stay dry during the rain or carry some extra cargo with you, this bike can handle it pretty well.

Some of the good features of this Verve 2 frame are that you get internal cable routing which keeps the cables away from your sight. This gives the bike a very clean and minimalist look but also offers extra protection to the cables when using a trunk mount or something similar.

This sounds like nitpicking but if you are going to carry your bike up the stairs by hand, your hands will appreciate if the cables are not harassing them every time you carry it by the top-tube. And aluminum won’t rust on contact with moisture so don’t worry about that.

Another good addition, which you won’t see a lot these days is the amount for one of those traditional wheel locks. Trust me when I say that this lock gives you that peace of mind when you have to quickly go into a store and don’t want to bother locking your bike.

Trek Verve 2 frame also has Integrated DuoTrap S digital sensor compatibility which you can use to wirelessly track your ride data directly from your bike to any ANT+ and Bluetooth enabled phone.

The fork on this bike is made of Verve alloy and threaded steerer tubes made of steel which gives great handling. Another thing that came as a surprise to me is that the frame comes with a ThruSkew axle. This means your front wheel will never drop out during rides and enables quick and easy access to your front wheel.

One of the choices I didn’t agree with this new model is the lack of a suspension. As a front suspension is something you’d expect on a comfort hybrid bike like this one. But turns out, the suspension on a bike like this doesn’t add that much to comfort as you’d think.

As this is a hybrid, you won’t be expected to do jumps or ride on trails, at least not as often, and riding in an upright position means your weight is more towards the back of the bike. And to get considerable benefits of a front suspension, you would need to ride more aggressively and have your weight more forward faced and this is not in the interest of a comfort bike.

But if you are looking for something to act as a double for trails and regular commute, Trek Marlin 5 will be a great choice at this price.

And by removing a front suspension, you also get some weight off the bike for a lighter and relaxed ride. And with adjustable suspension seat post and a taller stack, this fork offers you won’t feel any large shocks as long as you stick to well-paved roads and ground limestone.

Trek Verve 2 Drivetrain

The drivetrain of Trek Verve 2 consists of

  • Shimano Altus M315 8×3 shifters
  • Forged alloy 3 speed 48/38/28 crank with a Shimano Tourney TY710 front derailleur
  • 8 speed 11-32 Shimano HG31 cassette with a Shimano Altus M310 read derailleur

This bike comes with all Shimano components for the drivetrain as you can see. This is good because this eliminates the need for extra tuning and other compatibility issues that come with using different brands. To give you peace of mind If you are new to cycling, Shimano is considered the best for drivetrain components and is both used and loved by the top of athletes all around the world.

The 8×3 setup means you will be having a lot of speeds you can choose from for any gradient. Easier gears are suitable for people who are away from bikes for a long time or riders who are trying to rehabilitate and recover from leg injuries as they allow a complete stroke.

Handlebar and Stem

Verve 2 Handlebar

The handlebar on this hybrid bike is a 620mm/660mm wide alloy handlebar from Trek’s in-house brand Bontrager whose products are very reputable and you’ll be seeing a lot of components made by Bontrager hereinafter. This particular handlebar has a comfort sweep which gives the handlebar a subtle ‘M’ shape which you normally see on a comfort cruiser.

The stem part is a little bit special because it comes with a Bontrager alloy quill which essentially means you can adjust the rise of the handlebar into any of the 64 degrees it permits. The stem is also longer, 85mm or 105mm depending on the size you are getting, which is a considered a norm for road and commute oriented bikes as you have more clearance for making turns.

Seatpost and Saddle

Trek Verve 2 comes with an alloy made Seatpost with adjustable suspension which plays an important role in adding the extra bit of comfort while riding in an upright position. This has an adjustable range of up to 27mm to absorb those shocks and bumps along your way.

This along with the Bontrager Boulevard comfort saddle, the ride quality is immaculate and easily one of the most appreciated features on the bike. It has a lot of cushioning and stays very comfy during longer rides.

Trek Verve 2 Disc

You are lucky in this aspect as Trek Verve 2 only rim brakes until a few years ago and Trek made a great choice of switching to Tektro HD-M275 hydraulic disc brakes, Hence the name Trek Verve 2 Disc. Which are far more reliable and better in every aspect. They work flawlessly in any weather condition including damp conditions where rims brakes are scary to work with.

And they also offer the highest stopping power which comes in real handy when you are carrying more weight. Another pro of getting Hydraulic disc brakes as opposed to mechanical ones is that they are really easy to apply and maintain over time.

Verve 2 Rims

Both front and back hubs are made of Formula DC 6-bolt alloy (DC-20 in the front and DC-22 in the Back). Rims are Bontrager Connection which is double-walled and made of aluminum alloy for stiffer ride and strength of the wheels overall.

The stock tires which come with this bike are Bontrager H5 Comps, 700x45c which are wider than what you’d see on a road bike but not as much as a mountain bike. They roll pretty well on well-paved roads and gravel which is mostly the case for commuting and recreational riding.

The lack of front suspension doesn’t show due to these wider tires. Getting rid of the suspension allows for better energy transmission on the road as there are no power losses during pedaling.

Trek Verve 2 weighs in at 30.26 lbs or 13.73 kg for a size medium and has a total weight limit (weight of rider+cargo+bike) of 300 pounds or around 136 kg.

Frame review.

According to me, the frame accounts for roughly 70% of the bike’s appearance and feel, so it should be taken into account when making a purchase decision. The Alpha Gold Aluminum frame on the Trek Verve 2 represents the pinnacle of aluminum engineering for Trek bicycles.

The frame guarantees a solid ride while still feeling very light and forgiving while riding. The first time you test-ride this bike, you’ll quickly realize how important this is.

The bike has a shorter reach than other traditional fitness bikes because the comfort of the rider is given top priority when designing the frame. This also makes sure that you are riding this thing in a more upright position, which is suitable if you have ever experienced back, neck, or shoulder problems.

Fork Review

The absence of a suspension is one of the choices in this new model with which I disagree. As a front suspension is something you would anticipate on a comfort hybrid bike like this one. Since this is a hybrid, you won’t be required to perform jumps or ride on trails as frequently, and riding upright means your weight is distributed more toward the back of the bike. Additionally, in order to significantly benefit from a front suspension, you would need to ride more aggressively and shift your weight forward, which is not in the best interest of a comfort bike.

But at this price, the Trek Marlin 5 will be a great option if you’re looking for something that can be used for both regular commutes and trail runs.

You will have a wide range of speeds to choose from for any gradient thanks to the 8×3 setup. As they allow a full stroke, easier gears are ideal for riders who have been away from bikes for a long time or for those who are attempting to recover from leg injuries.

Handlebar And Stem Review

Trek made a wise decision to upgrade to hydraulic disc brakes from Tektro HD-M275, giving rise to the name Trek Verve 2 Disc. which are much better in every way and more trustworthy. Even in wet conditions, where rim brakes are dangerous to operate, they function flawlessly.

Additionally, they have the highest stopping power, which is extremely helpful when you are carrying more weight. Hydraulic disc brakes have the added benefit of being very simple to use and maintain over time, which is another advantage over mechanical ones.

Wheels Review

The front and rear hubs are both made of Formula DC 6-bolt alloy (DC-20 in the front and DC-22 in the back). For a stiffer ride and greater overall strength of the wheels, Bontrager Connection rims are double-walled and made of aluminum alloy.

Excellent bike.

In my early 20s and throughout graduate school, I was an avid rider. After that, I became preoccupied with other tasks, and my bike washed up on the side. I was anxious to start riding again because I wasn’t certain that it would be comfortable or that I would still enjoy it as much as I did in the past. I chose the Verve 2 bike after doing some research and don’t regret it. The bike is enjoyable and comfortable to ride. I wish I hadn’t waited so long and am looking forward to my time spent hiking. But the real test is: Would I buy another bike if this one broke tomorrow? Yes, right away. I am incredibly pleased with the purchase, and the Bicycle Garage’s staff in Bloomington was wonderful. fantastic overall experience

The Best Bike I Have Ever Owned Is This One.

I’ve switched between a road bike, mountain bike, hybrid bike, and now the Verve 2 Disk. I have discovered the ideal fusion of comfort and speed at the age of 66. At the end of a 26-mile ride, I can get off the bike pain-free thanks to the upright position and simple gear transition. I now want to ride again because that truly makes a difference. This bike will accompany me until dusk. PS: I got lucky that Gateway Cycle in North Saint Paul had this Verve 2 Disc in Gray in stock. I rode it for a short distance as a test drive before bringing it home.

I Adore This Bike Utterly…

I just picked up my new Verve 2 Disc this morning and went for a 6 mile ride. I love it so much! I have been riding a recumbent exercise bike ever since this whole Covid thing started, so I made the decision to get another bike and enjoy the summer. I’m a 58-year-old man who is currently trying to get back in shape. I’ve had issues with various other styles of bikes in the past, but this bike is comfortable on my knees and shoulders. Despite having a factory saddle, the bike is surprisingly comfortable, light, and agile. If you’re looking for a comfortable and casual form of exercise, stop right here! I’m hoping you’ll adore yours too!

Does Not Age Well

To go along with a Specualized Sirrus that I had bought in 2013, I bought this bike in early 2021. I rode both of them over the past year (roughly the same distances and terrain). The Verve is beginning to tremble, and the frame feels less sturdy than the Sirrus, who is nine years old. The Verve appears to have deteriorated more in a year than the Sirrus did in nine years, given the same circumstances and care. I want to trade my Verve in for a new Sirrus. Who knows though; perhaps the design of simple bikes was more advanced ten years ago….we shall see…

Is The Trek Verve 2 An Excellent Bicycle?

If you’re after a hybrid bike with fantastic braking power thanks to the hydraulic disc brakes, great reviews, and lots of features – the Verve 2 is a fantastic option!

If you’re looking for a drawback, I’d say the pedals need to be upgraded. It’s not a big deal to me, though, because I can’t recall ever using the pedals that came with a new bike instead of my own.

It also boasts an alpha gold aluminum frame that keeps the kgs down to a very respectable and desirable 13kg!

How Do Trek Verve 1 And 2 Differ From One Another?

The disc brakes make a significant distinction. The disc brakes on the Verve 2 Disc bicycles are hydraulic. The Trek Verve 1 has mechanical disc brakes.

This is significant because, when it comes to cycling, hydraulic disc brakes are more dependable and easier to maintain.

The brakes and gearing will both matter if you like to travel at high speeds…

The Verve 2 disc also benefits from a Shimano drivetrain . SunRace cassette is available for the Trek Verve 1.

Does it really matter?

Your shifters’ responsiveness may be impacted by the various materials these derailleurs are made of.

Ideally, the derailleurs will react immediately when you shift gears on your shifters.

Each Verve comes with an aluminum alloy frame, which is impressive considering some of the price points!

The Verve 2 Disc scores higher in terms of versatility because it offers a wider variety of gears!

The Trek Verve 2’s Weight Is How Much?

One of the features I love about the Trek Verve 2 disc is how lightweight it is as a bike. It weighs 13.2kg.

That is impressive for a hybrid bike with hydraulic disc brakes.

Then when you factor in that you get a load of extras such as the puncture protection tires , which yes, do weigh more but we’re talking grams and These tires, in my opinion, are worth the added weight.

Let’s not forget the rack, fender, and lights that are all included!

It is a lightweight bicycle overall.

Is A Trek Bike Value For The Money?

Verve Main Features

Let me now explain the most important features of the Trek Verve bikes and compare them.

Frame and Geometry

All Verve bikes come with an aluminum frame and are available in S-XL sizes but with forks made of either steel or aluminum.

They have a very relaxed geometry (more than the Trek FX family ), so you can sit upright and have an excellent view of your surroundings. This is particularly helpful in traffic.

Moreover, with the Verve’s upright geometry, you shouldn’t experience much pressure on your neck and lower back.

However, the bike’s upright position is unsuitable for quickly riding longer distances because it is less aerodynamic and requires more pedaling.

Lastly, it’s worth mentioning that Verve bikes also come in a lowstep version suitable for women.

Wheels and Tires

The wheel size on Verve bikes is the same as that of most hybrid bikes—700c—but with wider tires than those found on road bikes—45mm, which is also the maximum tire clearance.

Verve’s high-volume tires make them better at absorbing bumps and road vibrations, providing a more comfortable ride. They also allow you to tackle off-road terrain.

However, the tires have higher rolling resistance , so you won’t be able to reach the same high speeds on paved roads as you would with road bikes.

It’s essential to note that only the Verve 3 Disc has tubeless-ready wheels but doesn’t come with tubeless-ready tires . Therefore, you may need to swap them later if you wish.

The Verve family of bikes offers a wide gear range thanks to their 2X and 3X drivetrains. However, I prefer the simplicity and lower weight of the 2X drivetrains.

The 3X drivetrains are outdated and have a higher risk of cross-chaining, especially for beginners who may not be familiar with a proper shifting technique.

All Verve bikes come with reliable and relatively precise entry-level Shimano groupsets, such as Tourney, Alivio, Altus, and Acera.

If you decide to purchase a bike with a 3X drivetrain, use all gears depending on the terrain you are riding on. This will help evenly distribute wear on the components and prolong their lifespan.

Verve bikes have different types of brakes depending on the model. The entry-level Verve 1 has mechanical disc brakes, while other models have hydraulic brakes from Tektro or Shimano.

I believe the Trek Verve 2 provides the best value for the money. This is due to its use of hydraulic disc brakes and its lighter than Verve 1 and 3. You can also easily replace the grips for a more comfortable ride for just a few bucks, and the tubeless wheels on the Verve 3 may not be worth the extra money.

Trek Verve+ 2 Review: Everything You Need To Know

When my wife and I went e-bike shopping we knew we wanted a mid-drive e-bike with a step-through, or low step, option. We needed an e-bike that would be fun for guests can use when they visit, and something my wife can use to keep up on longer rides. Usually the altitude limits our visitors ability to go on bike rides, but viewing the City from the trail system is too amazing to miss. This Trek Verve+ 2 review will explain how this bike perfectly fit our needs.

This bike is a perfect fit for our family, but it is not perfect straight out of the box. In fact, there was one upgrade we made before we even left the bike shop. I’m going to share all of those problems, as well as everything we love about this bike.

Trek Verve+ 2 Problems

We haven’t had any serious problems with the Trek Verve+ 2. It probably doesn’t feel like a Trek Verve+ 2 review if I don’t bash on something, but this is a really well thought out bike. There is a quick release on the seat post to adjust saddle height, a rack already included, an adjustable stem and fenders to keep riders clean

Even though we haven’t had any problems, we have made a few modifications. The first modification we made was to the tires. The trail systems we ride most often are a combination of pavement and gravel. Some of the gravel sections can be a tad chunky and loose. The Bontrager H5 tires that come on the bike are excellent for commuting around town on pavement, but they felt a little loose at higher speeds on gravel.

Best Verve+ Upgrades

We ended up making the upgrade to a 700×50 gravel tire. According to the Trek Bikes website , this is the largest tire size they recommend for the Verve+ 2. My wife loved the look of tan sidewall tires and we ordered the first available pair. I also bought thorn resistant tubes. The shop installed the tubes and tires before we picked up the bike. The upgrade was easy and it totally transformed this bike.

One other modification we made was to the rear taillight. Rather than try to replace the light, we simply added a second that provides an additional level of functionality.

If you’ve followed me for a while you know I am a huge advocate of the Garmin Varia RTL515 radar tail light. ( Read my Varia RTL515 Review here .)

We ended up adding the taillight and have been using the app on my wife’s iPhone for the display. I love the way it displays on my Garmin computer, but another Edge is not something we need right now and the app works great.

What Is The Trek Verve+ 2 Range?

The range of this e-bike is relative to loads of different variables. The short and quick answer is you should get 30-80 miles on a full charge. That range is so broad is because range varies by fitness level, terrain, level of assist used, rider weight, and even a strong headwind will impact range. Our personal average has been just over 40 miles. That is riding mixed terrain with two riders of mixed fitness levels sharing the bike.

There are four different modes of assist: Eco, Tour, Sport, and Turbo. As the name implies, Eco will use the least amount of battery, while Turbo will use the most. If you hold down the minus(-) on your control pad it will change the display settings. The default is speed and odometer, but the second option shows your estimated range.

The normal display shows the traditional battery with illuminated bars indicating life. The range is nice because it converts that “bars” display into a mileage reading.

When riding the bike in Eco mode on flat surfaces we get a range of just over 80 miles. It’s hard to find such a flat stretch here in Colorado.

When climbing up hills in turbo mode the range is under 30 miles. We do have stretches of road with 30 mile climbs nearby. Thankfully you can double your mileage by simply turning around to go downhill.

Does the Verve+ 2 Have Suspension?

Yes, this bike comes with a seatpost suspension system offering 40mm of travel. Again, we take our Verve+ on gravel and it is incredibly comfortable. The slightly wider tires we upgraded also help smooth out the ride.

This suspension is not good enough to take this bike on a mountain bike trail. The riding posture is not ideal for aggressive trail riding either. The handlebars are adjustable to lay flat or stand upright. Even in the most aggressive position the bike feels more like a cruiser hybrid mix.

My question is how did I handle Those hills. I have read that the verve 2+ is underpowered and doesn’t do well on hills. We have a few in our neighborhood so this is a big issue for me

Power is all relative. The torque doesn’t have as many newton meters as others in this price range. If you are in shape and cycle already the assist offers plenty of power. If someone is getting into it to get in shape they will probably feel it is underpowered on steep inclines. I think it’s a great bike in terms of battery life, reliability and durability. It’s definitely not a peak performance machine.

Is there a way you can quick charge the battery? Charging the battery takes for every.I live in a hilly area and would like to increase the range of the bike. I really like to ride about 75 miles. I am 81 years old and need the help.

The Trek Verve+ is an e-bicycle that was built with the idea of giving the rider the most enjoyable and convenient commute.

A solid aluminum frame offers great convenience as you can ride fast enough to reduce commute time significantly.

On the cost side, I believe it is an affordable electric bike , even though it has superior components.

For this reason, most users love it because it still comes with many features that make it excellent value for money.

However, would you think the same?

The above question helped the brand to work on many improvements. As a result, they recently launched a new model with the Trek Verve+ 2. Read our review to see what changes were made .

– Excellent frame design comes in three (3) color options.

– Comfortable thanks to its ergonomic saddle.

– It has good maneuverability as the handlebar curves towards the rider’s body.

– Lights are always on for the rider’s safety, including daytime.

– Available in a variety of sizes, from 15 to 17″ frame , therefore for 154 cm to 187 cm people tall.

THINGS THAT CAN BE CONSIDERED

– It has no front suspension.

– The headlight is mounted on the frame (steering tube), and thus it only illuminates straight ahead.

– The control display is a bit too small, so it may be hard to read some of its metrics.

– The battery may drain faster with the lights on all the time.

– Despite having an aluminum frame, it is still considered heavy at 23 kg .

Pedal Assist System

This electric bike is classed among Pedelecs, as its power assist is limited to 15 mph (25 km/h) . This is where the motor stops providing power, therefore, it is within the electric bike legislation for all countries. Of course, this doesn’t limit you from riding faster, especially if you’re going downhill.

I was very satisfied with their assistance efficiency of the motor when using PAS 1. I was not expecting less, of course, because Bosch has always pride in their motor efficiency and torque power. In addition, it felt like a smooth push after having the first tyre spin when the motor was activated. There was not much of a difference when using PAS 5, but considering its speed limitation, I don’t think you need such a massive difference between pedal levels.

One of the significant features of the Verve + is its power system, which is fitted with a 250W mid-drive motor built by Bosch.

Mid-drive motors have a significant advantage, as they provide a good balance and usually tremendous torque to go uphill.

A lthough the Bosch Active Line motor is smaller than the average, it still performs efficiently. 

I have to say that the motor may not be the latest built by the brand, so it will be heavier than newer versions.

Despite the above, its efficiency provides very smooth rides and sufficient support with a torque of 40 Nm . I’m surprised that this motor is sitting on the lower range for torque performance however, it was good enough when ride riding on flat terrain.

Unfortunately, this torque rating is not gonna be the best when climbing hills, so if this is the case, then the Trek Super Commuter +9 would be a better fit for you.

Bosch Li-Ion Battery

Another vital part of the power system is the Bosch lithium-ion battery. Lithium-ion batteries are superior because they have a long lifespan, with 1000+ cycles before they need replacement.

The 300Wh battery found in this Trek model is not the highest one on the market either, but it is decent enough to last for a few years.

A thing to consider here is the battery not being waterproof . This could be potentially an issue if you live in a region where there is constant rain.

On the design side, it sits on the down tube, which doesn’t make it look like the most beautiful model, but it has a lot of conveniences to detach it from the frame.

But not everything is bad about this battery; it actually charges between three and four hours from fully empty. That is actually convenient if you don’t have enough time but need enough power for your next ride.

Remember that the headlights were configured to be on constantly, so ensure the battery has enough energy for the entire trip. Lastly, it can provide a range between 70 and 80 km if you use PAS 1.

The Controller System

Bosch has also reliable controllers to operate electric bikes. In this case, the Verve+ is controlled by the Purion version, which is a minimal device providing basic metrics. Although it comes from a good manufacturer, I believe the controller is a little bit smaller than I would like making it hard to read some of the parameters .

Even though that is my personal opinion, it shows an essential metric, and that is the battery range.

The brakes and drivetrain

The Trek Verve+ is fitted with quality Shimano hydraulic disc brakes. Even though the rotors are 160 mm, this is more than enough power for a bike that is not going to travel too fast, and it is in the mid-range weight. Though this is the case I was expecting a little bit better from the brand.

A great feature of the Verve plus is the lighting system designed to guarantee safety during the day and night.

This bike was configured so that the light would switch on automatically.  From what we know, it happens when the motor is engaged. In addition, the lights were designed to stay on continuously when you are riding. The difference between them is that the front headlight constantly illuminates, whereas the rear light flashes.

Trek designed the lights to be on throughout, including in the daytime, for the rider’s safety.

Design and Comfort

For the liking of many potential buyers, Trek customized the frame suitable for men and women. When compared to other commuter electric bikes like the Vyron Cumulus Pro , I think it is much more appealing and statically pleasing.

As a commuter e-bike, the tires needed to provide good grip and great rolling features. For this reason, the manufacturer decided to use the quality of Bontrager tires. In this case, 27″ by 2.1″ tires were used.

Looking at the inside elements, a puncture protective layer helps to reduce the occurrence of flat tires during cycling, however, this one fully prevents this issue.

The only thing that I would’ve loved from Trek was having a slightly stronger rear rim as it looked a little bit thin, which makes it looks a bit weak.

Electric bikes make riding not only convenient but also so much fun. This model can work perfectly for you if you are looking for a durable, smooth-running, and efficient machine.

What I like most about it is the inclusion of the suspension in the seat post. I don’t think it is the best quality, but there is something there, at least.

On the upside, the motor, the battery, and the controller were built by reliable manufacturers.

Although it comes with almost all the gadgets, you might have to make a few additions, such as getting a rear rack to carry stuff.

I have a Trek Verve + which I love, but I don’t love that the headlight is always on. Is there a way to turn it off in the daytime?

Hi Sue, thanks for your question.

Unfortunately, the Trek Verve+ front and rear lights were configured to stay on once you start using the ebike. Having said that, it is not possible to turn it off (unless you run out of battery). I know could be a bummer but Trek also sees this feature as a safety measurement. Regards, Matt.

We are seniors and find the access to charging port extremely difficult. You have to lean down, or lie on floor, to hold flap with one hand and insert a plug which is difficult to see/orient for insertion.

I am an engineer and could have designed far better ergonomics for charging. Shame…I thought e-bikes of this power/range would be ideal for older people… in this one thing you failed.

Just remove the battery and you can charge it any place you like. It doesn’t have to be charged while on the Trek. I charge mine on a counter top. I’m 70.

My husband decided to buy a Trek Super Commuter 8 for work. He encouraged me to look at the Verve+, saying if I had an e-bike we’d be able to do long rides together on trails and all over our hilly town. Reading reviews from people in my age group is what convinced me that this is exactly when I need to enjoy riding more and no longer dread falling way behind. Well, was thrilled and amazed when we made a trip to Boise, Idaho, and brought our bikes to ride on the Greenbelt! We rode longer and further than ever! All the slight uphill sections on trails that you encounter in an underpass no longer slowed me down! Riding into the wind is no longer a problem. And I am excited to do local rides on our trails here in Moscow, Idaho, which I have avoided because of hills or riding into the wind. I still ride my commuter bike to exercise classes three mornings a week because it’s a flat and short ride, plus I love my other bike (my retirement gift). Now I have two wonderful step-through bikes that I alternate between, depending on my destination, and I plan to ride for many, many years!

An e-bike is indeed a great alternative if you are encountering some difficulties while riding on standard bikes. I have an e-bike and a standard one, which I alternate depending on where I need to go.

The Trek Verve+ 250W Bosch active line mid-motor is powerful enough to carry up to 300 lb (136 kg total weight). Based on the details you provided, the motor should be able to carry the full weight (I’m also including an average dog cart weight of 28 lbs). Now, the more weight you have to carry with your e bike, the more effort the motor has to do, which translates into a long term torque reduction and motor wear. In addition, the motor will have to use more power out of the battery, which will reduce the lifetime of the battery in the long term.

SUSPENSION SEATPOST ON MY NCM MOSCOW

Hi, If anyone has been wanting a smoother ride ,especially Off Road then I can recommend the Suntour NCX Suspesion Seatpost. There is a big difference between this and the standard seat post. Ebay Uk currently have them for sale around £60, there are sellers also asking £150+ They are all selling so I guess other people rate them.

I added them to each of my bikes, and they are good value for the money, But I'd add 2 notes for folks considering them: 1. They are the tallest suspension seatpost option, so you need 4" of available height. If you can't measure very close to 4" between your seat post clamp and the rails on your seat in it's current setting, you won't have enough clearance to add one. 2. They sell 3x springs for them, and come stock with the middle strength spring. Lighter riders will want to order the light spring, and heavier riders the heavy one. Makes a noticeable difference in sensitivity if you match the right spring. There are other options if you don't have the clearance for the Suntour.

I’ve got one of these on my Moscow . Agree with all the above - it greatly improves the overall suspension and feel of the bike over rough tracks - it easily manages surfaces / gradients now that were unrideable before , in terms of both comfort and handling .

Bike Makes a Clicking Noise When Pedaling: Fix (Step by Step)

Bike noises are unpredictable. There is nothing more worrying than hearing a clicking sound while on your bike ride. It’s worse when you do not know where the noises are coming from because your bike may have serious mechanical issues. Instead of taking your bike back on the road, it would be better to find the source of the sound and fix it. Taking out the bike for a ride might result to something breaking or result to some sort of accident whether small or big.

Here is why your bike makes clicking noises when you are pedaling and how to fix it.

The Derailleur Hanger

Pedals and shoes (cleats), unsteady brake pads, bottom bracket, shifter cables, poorly lubricated parts, creaking and squeaking sounds, clunking or rattling noises, keep your bike regularly maintained, bike parts that cause creaks, squeaks, and clicks.

It is important to inspect your bike before every ride. If you notice that bike is clicking you should find the source of the clicking sound and fix it before raiding. Making sure that bolts on your bike are tightened and there are no squeaking sounds can prevent injuries and any damage to a bike. Lets take a look at most common bike parts that can cause bike to creaks, squeaks and clicks.

A misaligned or bent derailleur hanger will cause bike clicking sound when pedaling. Regardless of the size of the bend on the hanger, it will still throw off shifting and cause the bike clicking noises. In other instances, the clicking sounds occur when the hanger rubs against the bike frame.

– How to fix bike derailleur hanger clicking :

In the case where the hanger is rubbing against the frame you can try following to fix it

  • Detach the hanger and clean up all components.
  • Make sure you oil the surfaces to reduce any friction.
  • Repair the hanger if you need to before re-installing it back.
  • Remove them pulleys and oil/grease them before putting them back up.

One easy way to diagnose the clicking sound on your bike is to listen to its rhythm. If the pedals are the issue , you will notice the clicking noise when you pedal after every single pedal stroke. Clicking and squeaking with every stroke or rotation can also be as a result of faulty cleats. 

– How to fix bike pedal clicking noise:

Remove the pedals from the bike and grease them. Make sure the crank arm, washers and pedal are intact when re-installing them. Lubing the pedal springs every now and will help you prevent squeaky bike noises.

If your shoes get noisy during pedaling it’s a sign that you need to clean and lubricate them.

When the brake pads rub against the rims of the bike pedal while you are pedaling they can cause a clicking noise.

– How to fix bike brakes knocking noise :

First, make sure that the brake pads are toes in and in optimum condition. The front pads should only make contact with the rear part of the bike.

If the sound is not coming from your drivetrain and pedals, then the bottom bracket is definitely your culprit. Parts of your bike like the bottom brackets can be loose, causing annoying clicking sounds when you pedal.

– How to fix bottom bracket clicking sounds :

Check to see if the bottom brackets are tight. To reduce the clicking sounds, you have to tighten the bottom bracket cups. If your bike has a pre—fit bottom bracket you and you don’t have the tools to fix them, it would be better to take the bike to the bike shop for a quick repair.

Constant clicking sounds in certain gears means there is an issue with your shifter cables. If the shifter cable stretch, they can pull the derailleur out of alignment. This causes the chain to rub against the derailleur cage ride between the gears, making a constant clicking sound.

– How to fix shifter cables rubbing noises:

If your derailleur hanger is not bent and the derailleur is aligned, then the next solution is to tune the tension on the derailleur. If this does not fix the clicking sounds on your bike then you will need to replace the shifter cables.

Difficulty pedaling the bike, followed by a clicking and nocking sound while you are pedaling is a clear indication that you are  working with poorly lubricated bike.

Without lubrication, the chain won’t give you guaranteed performance while cycling. When it’s not well maintained, the chain will not accommodate the energy received during cycling.

– How to fix poorly lubricated bike:

The solution here is as simple as lubricating the bike. Use a lubricant lube or spray on the rollers to avoid the clicking and knocking sounds. Applying lube on your bike every two weeks should work out fine.

Other Bike Noises and How to Fix Them

While it’s uncommon, defective bike frames can be the cause of persistent creaking noise while you are pedaling hard. 

– How to fix bike frame creaking noise:

Unfortunately, bike frame malfunctions can be hard to diagnose. Frame defects like hairline cracks are hard to find if you are not a professional. The main solution is to take the bike to your local bike shop for diagnosis and fixing.

Quick Release or Thru Axle

The quick release will cause a squeaking noise when loose or dirty.  

– How to fix quick release squeaking noise:

To fix this, you need to tighten the quick release or thru acle and make sure it is not cracked or broken on which case will need fixing. Otherwise, make sure to remove, clean and grease the thru axle for a better riding experience.

Loose Chain 

If you hear a clunking or rattling noise while riding your bike, it could be due to a loose bike chain. A loose chain can cause the links to bounce around and hit the adjacent gears, causing a clunking noise.

Loose chain can also produce a rattling noise when the chain slaps against the chainstay or derailleur. Make sure to inspect your bike chain regularly in order to prevent any problems.

– How to fix loose chain rattling noise:

To fix this issue, chain will need to be tightened. 

  • The first step is to shift the chain to the smallest chainring and sprocket, so that there is less tension on the chain.
  • Then, use a chain tool to loosen the bolt that attaches the chain to the derailleur.
  • Pull the chain taut by lifting the rear wheel off the ground and rotating the cranks.
  • Once the chain is sufficiently tight, reattach the bolt to the derailleur.

Be sure not to over-tighten the chain, as this can cause damage to your bike’s gears or derailleur. With a properly tightened chain, you can enjoy a smooth and quiet ride. .

Loose Headset

If you hear clunking or rattling sounds from the front end of the bike while pedaling, the problem could be a lose headset. To check if this is the issue, you choose grab the front brake lever and rock it from front to back. You will hear the clunking sound and feel movement if you have a loose headset.

– How to fix loose headset rattling sounds:

To fix this, you should tighten the bolds in your headset. Start by loosening the stem bolts, tightening your headset then securing the stem bolts to make sure everything is fixed in tightly.

Loose Bottle Cage

Once common causes for rattling sounds while on the road is a loose bottle cage.

– How to fix loose bottle cage noise:

This is an easy fix: check the bolts that attach the bottle cage to your bike frame. Tighten all loose bolts to the manufacture’s specifications especially when you are dealing with carbon parts.

Too Many Wires

Too many cables at the front of the bike could cause consistent rattling sounds while you are riding. One of the main reasons for this is poor wire set-up or having excessive wires on the front end of the bike. The cables click against the frame or each other, causing a rattling sound. Internal cable routing will cause even launder rattling sounds

– How to fix rattling caused by cables:

The best way to fix this would be by rerouting or replacing the brake and shifter cables. You would be better off taking the bike to your local bike shop if you lack the tools and skills to repair it.

Maintaining your bike is crucial to ensure optimal performance and longevity. Neglecting your bike’s maintenance can lead to more severe problems down the line that will cost more money to fix. Therefore, it’s in your best interest to service your bike regularly.

Regular bike maintenance ensures that small issues are caught before they become bigger problems, meaning you can catch and eliminate any potential noise problems before they turn into something worse.

When your bike needs maintenance or repair, it is best to take it to a reputable bike repair shop. Experienced bike technicians will know exactly how to diagnose and repair any issues with your bike.

Powertube battery stuck in frame, key not turning.

I've got a new issue on my Mondraker Level ? My powertube battery is currently stuck in the frame. I can insert the key, but it won't turn to unlock the battery. I noticed the lock now isn't quite central to the hole in the frame, and there is a little bit of play so I can insert the key and move the lock barrel 2-3mm towards or away from the battery, it's always had this bit of play but guess this is not normal? Anyone have an idea of how I can get it out? There is a pair of allen bolts externally for both battery mounts but I'm not sure this will help if the battery is already stuck. Shop I bought the bike from are a few hours drive away so would like to avoid if possible. I do have a Bosch service centre nearby if needed (bike is in warranty). Thanks

Sometimes I have to wiggle the battery at the same time as turning the key to get mine out. Or push the battery in slightly to activate the latching mechanism as I'm turning the key.

See if pushing down on the battery (as if you were re fitting) while gently turning the key helps. A squirt of WD40/GT85 into the lock may help as well.

How does the lock usually work? Does unlocking it turn a barrel or does it release a barrel outwards? The fact you can fully insert the key means the key is lifting the pins in the lock barrel OK so it is rotation of the barrel that is stuck. Applying lube inside the lock is not going to help therefore. Lube..or preferably wd40 needs to be applied to the external barrel. I suggest you squirt some wd 40 between the lock and the frame and also gently repeatedly tap that area to dislodge what is probably dust or grit causing it to stick.

Just a quick point .. NEVER ! EVER EVER squirt wd40 in locks, clocks or anything else with intricate small moving parts. Whilst WD40 is great for freeing up rusty crappy stuck stuff, it leaves behind a sticky residue. Small particles stick to this and build up turning it into a mix of sandpaper and grinding paste, eventually wearing away all the delicate bits. A silicone or teflon (ptfe) lube would be more appropriate.  

Update - It's out! ? Didn't end up spraying anything, but pushing the battery into the frame and wiggling the barrel up and down a bit while turning the key it hit a spot where the key would turn easily and out it popped. Weird, I spent 10 mins trying the same yesterday... Since the barrel isn't lined up with the hole in the frame, I'm wondering whether it's worth trying to adjust the mounts at either end of the battery in the frame to set them up right. I'm not sure if there is any adjustment or whether they are fixed in place though. Off to go look for some diagrams/ youtube vids...  

Just out of interest was there a change in ambient temperature since you first tried to get the battery out. My LBS mentioned to me last year that they had a couple of bikes with sticky batteries when the Power Tube batteries first came out. Their theory was that the battery was expanding slightly, so if there was a temp rise since the battery was installed, it was causing the battery to jam in the frame due to very tight clearance. Never heard mention of it on any forum since, so not certain if that theory is correct.

@Gigha - I tried taking the battery out mid-ride to swap for my spare. It was 10-11degC ambient at the time. I then tried again yesterday when it was 7-8degC and failed. This morning it was a bit cooler 3-4degC and the battery popped out with some wiggling. I've been swapping batteries fairly regularly before this without any issues.

I’ve just had a similar problem, in fact the lock has been getting more and more reluctant for a few weeks. It had got to a “one of us won’t survive this” stage ? I took the assembly apart which is quite simple. That made clear it was the lock barrel and not the catch/lever which I had thought it might be. I cleaned the lock, put it back together and it’s pretty smooth now opening every time, first time. I think a new lock isn’t expensive, 20-25 euros I think. I’m not much impressed with the quality of it, it’s made by Abus and not up to their usual standard I’d say.

I’ve had a similar issue on a Trek Rail where I got the key stuck and the battery jammed in position. I also spent a while trying to push and pull various things, with eventually the battery coming out. There are various causes, but generally a bracket alignment issue. I found the screws holding my bottom battery bracket were loose, which allowed the bottom bracket to tilt and jam the battery. These screws (for both the top and bottom brackets) can be tightened from the outside of the frame, so worth a check if your battery gets stuck. Once you get the battery out, follow the battery alignment guidelines to get the brackets in the correct position again.

Fitting your bicycle

When your bike fits well (seat height, handlebar height, seat angle, etc.), you’ll have more fun riding. And when you have fun riding, you’ll ride more often – which is good for everybody. If you’re having trouble getting just the right fit, stop by a Trek bike shop for help. We want to make sure you love the way your bike feels. How you position yourself on your bike is largely a matter of personal preference—it’s a blend of comfort, efficiency, and balance. There’s no hard and fast rule for how to sit on a bicycle, and there are a number of different riding positions and preferences. For example, a more upright position is generally more comfortable for casual riding around town. For racing, an aerodynamic position bent deeply over the handlebars helps a rider increase speed. Regardless of the kind of riding you do, you should be comfortable. If you haven’t ridden a bicycle for some time, it’s normal to have a break-in period as you get used to the muscular demands of pedaling and to the pressure of pedals, handlebar, and saddle. But after this period, a bicycle should be comfortable and not cause aches, pains, or numbness. Check the sizing & fit charts at the bottom of each bicycle’s product page on trekbikes.com for detailed sizing and frame geometry specifics.

Handlebar height

Generally, most of a rider's weight should be on the saddle. The handlebar should be within a few inches higher or lower than the saddle. A lower handlebar position is better for speed, a higher one is better for comfort or balance.

Handlebar angle

Rotate the handlebar in the stem to change the angle of your hands and wrists. Your hands should be comfortable while you ride. You should be able to easily operate all controls (brakes, shifter, seat dropper, etc.) without needing to stretch, or having to move your hands too far from your normal riding position.

Seat height

There are two methods for finding the right seat height. Whichever you use, start with the pedal in the 6:00 position.

Without shoes

⚠ WARNING — Extended riding with a poorly adjusted seat, or one that does not properly support your pelvic area, can cause injury to your nerves and blood vessels. If your seat causes pain or numbness, adjust the seat position. If after adjustment, your seat still causes pain or numbness, consult your bike shop about adjustments or replacing the seat with one that fits you better.

Seat fore-aft adjustment

Slide the seat on the seatpost or rails to adjust it fore and aft. This adjustment changes how far you have to reach to grasp your handlebars, and it shifts your weight distribution on the bicycle, both of which affect how your bike handles. As the seat position is changed, the angle of the hip rotation also changes. This may put more stress on your lower back.

Carbon seat rails

⚠ WARNING — Only use a Bontrager seatpost that has 7x10 rail clamps or has two seatclamp bolts. Non- approved rail clamps can cause the saddle rails to break, which could cause a loss of control resulting in serious injury or death.

Position of your feet on the pedals

The way you position your feet on your pedals determines the efficiency and power of your pedal stroke. Find a comfortable position with the ball of your foot directly over the pedal axle.
