trekology trek z 2.0 cork review

As a full-time commercial outdoor photographer, I consider three things when choosing a trekking pole for my outdoor pursuits: price, weight, and adjustability. The Trekology Trek-Z 2.0 Trekking Poles stand out as reliable pieces of kit that won’t break your bank account and can be stored away in a small package for easy travel.

When I’m in the field scouting remote locations or simply traveling light through a busy airport, having a pair of trekking poles that can be stowed inside a small backpack is invaluable.

Soon after I received these poles, I traveled to Oregon for a photo project and found myself hiking along steep and remote cliffsides. The poles deployed quickly and helped me navigate the tricky landscape, and once I returned to flat ground, I easily broke the poles down and stowed them inside my backpack. All for less than $50 — not bad in my book.

In short: The Trekology Trek-Z 2.0 poles are affordable and comfortable trekking poles with lots of functionality. The ability to fold these poles to a mere 15 inches makes traveling with them a breeze. While these poles are ready for adventure, the aluminum construction comes with significant weight penalties. If you are an average user who spends their time on trail but would like a pole for the occasional off-route scramble mission, these poles offer great value in that respect.

The Trek-Z 2.0 poles recently received our Best Budget award. To see how they compare to the rest of the market, check out GearJunkie’s Best Trekking Poles Buyer’s Guide .

Trekology Trek-Z 2.0 Trekking Poles: Review

Trekology Trek-Z 2.0 Poles in Action While Hiking

Whether a seasoned adventurer or a casual hiker, trekking poles are invaluable companions that can significantly enhance your comfort and performance on the trail. Personally, I have three separate pairs of trekking poles I use across a wide variety of disciplines, such as thru-hiking, trail running, and general travel. The Trekology Trek-Z 2.0 trekking poles perfectly fit that third category.

My work involves frequent travel through airports and along backcountry trails. Having a pair of affordable trekking poles that pack away small and wouldn’t be missed if I left them in a rental car or a hotel room is great peace of mind.

These poles aren’t just about convenience; they’re about performance. My travels through Oregon took me on steep grassy cliffs along the Pacific Coast. The attached wrist straps and a sharp carbide tip cutting into the soil helped my stability.

Later on, I moved inland and went for a short hike within Mt. Saint Helens National Monument. Here, a rainy day produced a wet and muddy trail to follow, so I secured my mud stops to the tips and proceeded to have a beautiful hike through the volcanic landscape.

Who Is Trekology?

A trekking pole plunges into the mud beside a hiker's boot

Built in the Pacific Northwest, Trekology was founded by a tight-knit group of passionate Ph.D. engineers fueled by their love for nature and a vision of crafting high-quality products accessible to all. From the outset, they’ve remained true to their mission, developing a wide array of in-house-designed products that uphold their commitment to delivering top-notch outdoor gear at affordable prices.

First Impressions: No Lightweight

There is no getting around it — these poles are hefty. While this won’t be a deal-breaker to some, those who watch the ounces and grams we carry will notice the overbuilt nature of these poles. The 100-120cm length poles weigh 19 ounces, while the longer 110-135cm poles tip the scales at 22 ounces. For comparison, the pair of Black Diamond poles I used on my PCT thru-hike weighed 12 ounces.

At more than twice the weight of some lightweight poles on the market, experienced users will certainly notice the added weight — and alpinists or trail runners, whose mission it is to move quickly and light, will want to look elsewhere.

During the photo scout in Oregon, I carried between 15 and 25 pounds of camera equipment on my back as I hiked over rough terrain. For the moments when I was utilizing the poles for their purpose, they performed beautifully, helping me navigate the grassy hillsides and densely wooded forests of the PNW coast. However, when I folded them up and stowed them in my bag alongside the camera gear, I definitely noticed the added weight to an already heavy load.

Build Quality and Features

Trekology Trek-Z 2.0 Poles — Detail EVA Foam handles and Wrist Straps

Some may think heavy gear means it’s over-engineered and built to last. These poles certainly don’t scream cheap or low quality, but the materials are budget-friendly, and it shows after use.

For long days on the trail, I prefer cork grips over EVA foam. In warm climates, sweaty hands grip better to cork, and the all-day comfort holds up well.

It should be noted that Trekology does offer a version of these trekking poles with a cork handle; however, the version I tested came with EVA foam. While using these Trek-Z poles during testing, I noticed the EVA foam grips were a touch too large for my hands and after many miles of hiking, my grip began to feel strained.

Included with each set is a full suite of tips tailored for various terrains, ensuring you’re equipped to handle whatever terrain you may encounter. While in Oregon, I used the mud stop during a wet and muddy hike, the rubber feet while on a slick rock trail, and the carbine tip for steep coastline travel. The application to secure these tips on and off was easy and secure.

A detail image of trekking pole locking mechanisms

A highlight of these poles is the robust metal flip-lock mechanisms. This offers swift and secure height adjustments, allowing you to customize their length to your preference. The mechanism has a solid feel to the touch and is easy to use while on the move for micro-adjustments.

You can immediately confirm your poles are locked in place with the flip-lock mechanism, unlike a twist-lock pole. Trekology offers these poles in two sizes: either 100-120 cm for users under 5’9”, or 115-135 cm for those taller than 5’9”.

Despite their weight, the Trek-Z 2.0 poles show strong durability and construction quality. The wrist straps are comfortable and easy to adjust. While contributing to the weight, the aluminum shafts ensure sturdy support on varied terrain. However, the budget-friendly materials, though resilient, may not match the premium feel of higher-priced alternatives such as carbon fiber.

Easy to Travel With

The compact design of the Trek-Z 2.0 poles is undoubtedly their greatest asset. Folding down to a mere 15 inches, they fit seamlessly into backpacks or luggage, making them ideal companions for travelers and adventurers alike.

On my recent scouting trip along the Oregon coast, these poles folded and fit effortlessly in my backpack along with my camera gear. While the TSA does not allow trekking poles to fly with you inside the airplane cabin, these poles fold and fit easily in most standard rolling bags or backpacks you would normally gate-check.

Room for Improvement

When it comes to trekking poles, the Goldilocks pair is hard to find. Trekology has designed a great set of utilitarian poles with the Trek-Z 2.0s that will help you travel across a wide range of terrain.

If I had a seat at the designers’ table, I might have tried to work the grip into a more comfortable size and whittled the weight down. At the end of the day, when using these trekking poles on short hikes and front-country trails, I doubt most users will find either issue to be a deal-breaker at this price point.

For nearly triple the price, the Black Diamond Pursuit FLZ Trekking Poles are a close competitor to the Trek-Z 2.0s. These poles feature an all-aluminum construction and collapsible system, along with a real cork grip, and they weigh just 18 ounces.

In comparison, the similarly sized Trek-Z poles weigh 22 ounces. For the money, however, it’s tough to argue with the value the Trek-Z poles bring to the table.

Trekology Trek-Z 2.0: Conclusion

A hiker uses the Trekology Trek-Z poles in the rain while hiking in Oregon

The Trekology Trek-Z 2.0 Trekking Poles strike a commendable balance between affordability, portability, and functionality. These may not be the first poles I grab from my gear closet when I am setting out on a multiday backpacking trip or an afternoon trail run.

However, they definitely have a place on trips like my most recent one to Oregon, where their compact design and durable nature lend themselves to the ever-changing needs and surfaces I may experience.

Despite minor drawbacks such as grip size and weight, these poles excel in providing stability and support on diverse terrain types, making them worthy companions for your next adventure.

Trekology Trek-Z 2.0 Pole

The best value trekking poles of 2021..

We’ve broken our fair share of budget poles, some seemingly right out of the box. But the foldable, three-section aluminum Trek-Z 2.0 has been by our side for five months without a hitch. With an extended foam grip topped by a comfy handle and 8 inches of adjustability, the pole offered comfort and versatility to choke up when we made the 1,000-foot ascent up the Willow Creek Trail in Montana. The Trek-Z 2.0 also breaks down to 15 inches long, making it convenient to stash inside or on a daypack. There are some tradeoffs for the low price, however: The pole needs an extra step to lock the internal cord after folding, the single metal adjustment flick-lock mechanism requires tightening after traversing steep terrain, and the straps are thin and scratchy.

Trekology TREK-Z Walking Poles Review

The Trekology TREK-Z poles are a very keenly priced option with a lot to recommend them. They offer a folding walking pole that packs down small at a price that few can match.

Table of Contents

Pros / Reasons to Buy

  • Excellent price
  • Very compact when folded

Cons / Reasons to Avoid

  • The heaviest poles in our round up
  • Spare and replacement parts are not available

These are very keenly priced poles with a lot to recommend them: they are sturdy, fold down to an exceptionally compact size and come with a range of accessories that other manufacturers will charge extra for.

Trekology will be an unknown brand to many potential buyers and, as always, there will be those who would rather buy from a well-known brand who offer their reputation and replacement parts should anything go wrong.

However, you’ll always pay a premium for this – sometimes quite a large one too – and if you’re willing to take a chance on a lesser-known brand, then these folding aluminum poles offer a lot for your money. They are far from the lightest option, but when considered against the rest of their feature set – and especially their very low price – you may be willing to look past this negative point.

Analysis and Test Results

The Trekology TREK-Z Walking Poles are a very interesting product from a relatively unknown (to us, at least) brand who specialize in making affordable outdoors and fitness gear.

The poles come in at a very attractive price point and they are the second least expensive poles in this round up. These folding poles pack down very small, offer a good adjustment range when extended and come with a comprehensive accessory pack.

On the surface, there’s a lot to like about these poles, but the downside is that they are also the heaviest poles in our round up by a long way, and this should be factored into any purchase decision.

Performance Comparison

These poles feature an ergonomic, high density foam handgrip. From a distance, it may look like the upper section is cork, but on closer inspection, you’ll see its actually all foam.

Whilst some users will certainly prefer the qualities of cork grips and will be happy to pay the premium it normally attracts, we’ve always been more than happy with foam grips, so we don’t see this as an issue.

As you’d expect, there’s an adjustable wrist strap integrated into the grips, but it’s also worth noting that there’s no specific shock absorbing technology integrated into these poles – they’re fully rigid. Some users may see this as a disadvantage, but there’s also plenty who will welcome this as the rigid pole may well be preferable for them if they regularly put their full weight onto the pole.

The Trekology TREK-Z Walking poles weigh in at 612g/1lb 6oz for a pair. That makes them the heaviest poles in our round up. The Leki Sherpa is the only other pole in our round up that comes close to this weight, but, as we discuss in our review of that product, it’s a specialized product and that weight can be justified.

Given that the Trekology TREK-Z is more of a general purpose hiking pole, this high weight is a definite negative point and is certainly something that those who want to carry the lightest gear possible will need to consider.

However, in practice, the weight difference between these poles and a competitor that’s within, say, 100g/a few oz per pair is unlikely to be noticed by many hikers and when you consider the attractive price point of these poles have, that weight becomes less of a problem.

Shaft Materials

The Trekology TREK-Z walking poles have fully aluminum shafts – and indeed, beyond the pole shafts, many other parts of these poles are made from metal. This gives a great sense of solidness and durability.

However, this does come with a weight penalty and, as mentioned above, at 612g/1lb 6oz per pair, these are by far the heaviest poles in our round up. Whilst the weight of these poles is undoubtedly one of their key weaknesses, aluminum does have some key advantages over carbon fiber as a material choice: for starters, it’s cheaper, and its use is surely a key factor in the low price of these poles.

Second, whereas carbon fiber cracks or at worst shatters when pushed past its limits, aluminum bends, so it can be seen as a better choice for those who use their poles in the most demanding environments (though, we’re talking about very extreme conditions here, so this is unlikely to be a factor in most people’s purchasing decisions).

Packed Size

The Trekology TREK-Z Walking Poles utilize a folding design, which means they can pack down to a very compact 38cm/15in. That’s very compact indeed and the only pole in our round up that packs down smaller is the Black Diamond Distance Carbon FLZ which packs down 1cm – less than an inch – shorter, has a shorter maximum extended length and is several orders of magnitude more expensive.

We think this is a very impressive showing from this budget brand and, if packed size is important for you, then these poles are well worth a look. However, as we’ve seen, these poles are also very heavy and that goes some way towards making the small packed size less attractive.

Pole Adjustment Mechanism

The Trekology TREK-Z Walking Poles utilize a folding design and they are adjusted in a similar way to the other folding pole sin our round up: The three sections are connected by a sturdy cable. You loosely thread them together, then, a section is extended to a spring-loaded stop point to tension everything and bring rigidity to the pole.

After this, the working length can be adjusted with a single telescopic section with a graduated scale, for quick length adjustment, and a chunky flip lock. Trekology use a heavy-duty metal flip lock that seems extra sturdy – though it surely does add some weight to the product. As you’d expect, the flip lock has a small adjustment nut that can be used to fine-tune the tension of the lock in the field.

Basket Size

The Trekology TREK-Z Walking poles come with an extensive accessory kit comprising a regular, smaller trekking basket, plus a larger snow basket plus a variety of different rubber feet that can be used as an alternative to the hard tip. It’s good to have this range of accessories included – you’d have to buy each of these separately from most other manufacturers – but we do also think that most users will be swapping these around less than they might think.

Still, it’s good to have the options provided and they certainly add further good value to a set of poles that’s already at a great price.

Grip Ergonomics and Material

The ergonomic grip of the Trekology TREK-Z poles is made from high density foam. From a distance, the upper part looks like cork, but on closer inspection, this is purely cosmetic.

As is common, the grip extends down the shaft of the pole to offer a better grip surface when you’re using the poles on steep ascents.

At the time of writing, the Trekology TREK-Z poles cost $42.99/£31.99, making them the second cheapest poles in our round up and the least expensive option that’s available in the US. This is a very aggressive price point for a pole that’s sturdily built and, on paper at least, very well featured in every way apart from its weight.

The included accessory pack adds further to the value proposition of this product. If you’re on a tight budget, just want to test the water to see if you like hiking with poles or simply don’t want to spend a lot of money on this accessory, then we think these poles are an excellent choice.

The second cheapest poles in our round up, the Trekology TREK-Z poles offer a solid and well-featured option. They are a great choice for those who might prefer a folding pole over the more conventional telescopic design you normally find in budget-friendly walking poles.

However, we can’t look past the fact that they are heavy – substantially more so than some (admittedly far more expensive) options we’ve also assessed. Still, the low price point is very attractive, and we think that many potential buyers will see the weight penalty an acceptable trade-off for the very keen price.

Best Trekking Poles of 2024

If you’re getting serious about hiking, you need a great pair of trekking poles in your hands. Also known as hiking poles, walking poles, or, less often, hiking sticks, trekking poles are lightweight, sturdy, and adjustable poles that offer you added balance and stability on all sorts of terrain. They take some of the effort off your legs by letting your hands and arms help propel you down the trail.

U.S. News & World Report contributor Steven John is an avid hiker and mountaineer, and has used trekking poles everywhere from the jungles and mountains of South America to the Swiss Alps. He drew upon his personal experience and that of several outdoor professionals to curate a list of the best trekking poles. With a pair of these, your outdoor adventures will be more fun, safer, and easier on your legs and lower back.

Trekology Trek-Z 2.0 Trekking Poles  »

Trekology Trek-Z 2.0 Trekking Poles

7.8-inch adjustment range

10.8 ounces per pole

Good price point

Assembly takes a while to master

Tips can’t be replaced after wearing down

You'll love these affordable and capable trekking poles, which are our top pick. Setting them up takes a few minutes, but the effort is well worth it. They're light at just 10.8 ounces per pole; they're sturdy yet have a bit of give when impacting against hard materials; and they come with multiple accessories that make them suitable for varied terrain and conditions.

The primary grips are a lightweight and absorbent cork, but you can also grasp the textured EVA foam placed right below the cork, adjusting the poles to be taller if that’s your preferred material. And when you’re done with your trek – or just done with your poles for the moment – the Trek-Z 2.0 poles fold up into a package measuring just 15 inches long, so they can tuck into even a smaller daypack or strap to the outside of your bag. That small folded size also makes for easy storage at home when the adventure is over.

Cascade Mountain Tech Lightweight Aluminum Trekking Poles  »

Cascade Mountain Tech Lightweight Aluminum Trekking Poles

Great price point

Huge adjustment range

Easy adjustment

Long even when collapsed

Twist locks occasionally fail

A pair of Cascade Mountain Tech Lightweight Aluminum Trekking Poles costs less than $25, making them far and away the least expensive poles we reviewed, but they're surprisingly good given the price. With aluminum shafts and molded foam grips, these trekking poles are light but sturdy and can be used on snow, mud, rocks, or dirt thanks to the many accessories that come with them. Plus, they can be used by people of varied heights, too, as they can adjust from being as short as 26 inches to as tall as 54 inches, which is suitable for someone 6 feet 2 inches or even a bit taller.

That range is great for users of all heights and terrain of varied steepness. However, 26 inches is also as small as these poles get, meaning they’re pretty long even when fully collapsed. They won’t fit into any smaller packs and will stick off your back a fair way when slung, and they won’t fit into most drawers, either. But the important thing is performance during use, and here we have an affordable set of hiking poles that comes with plenty of accessories to meet the conditions and that are light and easy to use.

Leki Black Series Carbon Trekking Poles  »

Leki Black Series Carbon Trekking Poles

Very lightweight

Easily adjusted wrist straps

Secure speed lock mechanisms

Some poles have mismarked heights

When you’re thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail or making a summit push on Kilimanjaro, every ounce of gear weight matters. And as weight can matter on less extreme adventures, too, anyone concerned with having the lightest overall trekking kit should consider the Leki Black Series Carbon Trekking Poles. Each pole here weighs just a hair over 8 ounces, meaning the pair only adds a pound of overall weight to your gear. That light weight is thanks to a mix of aluminum and carbon fiber in the shaft and lightweight cork grips. Set above those grips is an easily adjusted strap that lets you secure your poles to your wrist with maximum freedom of movement yet the knowledge the poles won’t be lost if dropped.

These are the most expensive trekking poles we reviewed, and even so, some individual poles come with inaccurate height markings; make sure you adjust them based on feel, not the numbers on the shaft. But that's about it for negatives. Dialed in, these lightweight trekking poles are great for multiday treks, mountaineering, or anyone who needs very light poles due to upper body strength issues. John has tested several pairs of Leki trekking poles, including Black Series poles, and found them easy to adjust and stable.

Kelty Upslope 2.0 Trekking Poles  »

Kelty Upslope 2.0 Trekking Poles

Rugged and reliable

Easy to adjust height

Minimal accessories included

A pair of Kelty Upslope 2.0 Trekking Poles will last for years of adventuring. Steven John knows that firsthand, having used Kelty trekking poles for more than six years now without any failures. They can be quickly adjusted via twisting ring locks to between 25.5 and 53 inches, and the tough tungsten carbide tips bite into softer materials like dirt or roots and can take a stable hold on rock or ice thanks to the tip’s texturing.

Were they a bit lighter and shorter, these may well have been our top choice. But at more than 9.3 ounces per pole, they're a bit heavy. They're also on the long side, even when fully collapsed. However, these affordable and reliable trekking poles are a great choice for when you’re not sure what type of terrain may lie ahead.

Black Diamond Trail Trekking Poles  »

Black Diamond Trail Trekking Poles

Easy to adjust even wearing gloves

Dual-density foam grips

A bit pricey

Only comes with trekking baskets

The Black Diamond Trail Trekking Poles are great any time of year. That’s because they're light enough to bring along for multiday warm-weather treks but durable enough for ice or snow, or even to pinch-hit as ski poles. They also have external lever locks for adjusting the shaft length, which you can use while wearing heavy gloves. Just note that if you're going to use these poles in the snow, you should buy a pair of snow baskets for the trekking pole tips.

Adding accessories of course raises the price of these already rather expensive hiking poles, but their suitability for so many conditions helps take away the sting. They adjust from 15 to 55 inches and should serve hikers up to about 6 feet 2 inches adroitly. And at just 8.05 ounces per pole, they certainly won’t weigh you down.

REI Co-op Tarn Kids’ Trekking Poles  »

REI Co-op Tarn Kids’ Trekking Poles

Perfect size for young trekkers

Lightweight

Easy-to-use external lever lock

Rubber grips not absorbent

The REI Co-op Tarn Kids’ Trekking Poles have a function extension range of 43.25 inches down to 35 inches, making them the perfect size for kids. They're also suitable for any hiker 5 feet 7 inches or shorter, and they weigh just 7.6 ounces per pole. That said, they're still 26 inches long when fully collapsed, so they take up more room than some notably larger hiking poles.

The length of the durable aluminum shaft is controlled by an easy-to-use lever lock, and the shaft is capped by a sturdy rubber grip. The grip isn't ideal in warmer, humid weather, though, as it lacks the sweat and moisture absorption of a cork or EVA foam material. All told, these are great hiking poles for younger users at a decent price.

MSR DynaLock Ascent Carbon Backcountry Poles  »

MSR DynaLock Ascent Carbon Backcountry Poles

Ideal for snowy conditions

Compact collapsed length

Kevlar-reinforced carbon fiber

Very expensive

Limited height adjustment range

The MSR DynaLock Ascent Carbon Backcountry Poles were specifically designed for winter activities like snowshoeing, splitboarding, or mountaineering on glaciers or snowpack. They're tough enough to take the abuse as you bomb down back bowls or skin up steep slopes thanks to the Kevlar reinforcing their carbon fiber shafts. They come with broad winter baskets as well as narrower summer baskets, because while they are ideal for snowbound use, they work fine on rocks and roots, too.

And while rugged and reliable, these trekking poles are also lightweight and they collapse down small, measuring just 17.5 inches when fully folded down. That makes them perfect for use when you need to stow your poles and use your hands. The poles only have an 8-inch adjustment range, but they come in two different length options.

The Bottom Line

The Trekology Trek-Z 2.0 Trekking Poles are our pick for the best trekking poles overall because they pack down to just 15 inches in length and weigh just 10.4 ounces per pole, yet they’re still a great price per pair. Those and other positive attributes aside, each of the pairs of poles we covered have plenty going for them. A different set of hiking poles may be your best bet based on things like durability, size, or price, so choose wisely.

Things To Consider When Buying Trekking Poles

Adjustability: Arguably the most important feature of your trekking poles is their adjustability range, also known simply as their length. You want your trekking poles to be at a height such that your elbows are bent 90 degrees when you hold your poles on level ground, and you want to be able to shorten the poles for uphill ascents and lengthen them for the downclimb. Make sure any trekking poles you consider can meet these length adjustment requirements relative to your height.

Weight: The second most important factor to weigh when you are shopping for trekking poles is weight, and this is especially true if you will be going on a day-long or multi-day trek and/or if you are going to be dealing with a lot of altitude gain, as hiking uphill is markedly harder than level ground treks. Every ounce of gear weight adds up, so consider spending the extra money for lighter poles if you are going on longer expeditions. But also know that tougher terrain calls for tougher poles, and these are often not the lightest.

Shaft and Grip Materials: When it comes to trekking pole shafts, carbon fiber is lighter than aluminum but tends to be much more expensive, so the cost-benefit analysis is literally a matter of cost. In some ways, though, trekking pole materials are a matter of choice, not of better or worse or of price. For example, Josanna Yelle, an avid outdoorswoman and founder of the site Adventuresome Jo , says: “I prefer trekking poles with EVA foam grips. These grips offer many benefits, including rapid drying properties, exceptional comfort, and retaining their shape even after prolonged use in diverse weather conditions.” Other hikers prefer cork grips, though, which rapidly wick sweat from the hands and are very lightweight.

Shock Absorption: Telescoping poles tend to have the best shock absorption, as each joint has a bit of give. Also consider the construction of the grips and the options for trekking pole tips when it comes to shock absorption, which lets you put more of the overall effort of hiking on your upper body. “When [using poles], not only are you engaging your upper body and exerting your arm muscles, you’re taking an immense amount of strain off of your knees, which allows you to hike longer without aching joints,” says freelance outdoor writer Paige Triola .

Locking Mechanisms: Collapsible trekking poles use a twist-lock that lets segments slide into one another for length adjustment or full collapse and storage, hinging sections that unlock and swing shut, or a combination of both. Pick which type of lock is easier for you to use, and know you may be wearing gloves as you work with your poles. Also, think about how you'll need to store and transport your poles. “Telescopic poles are the most practical choice for me,” says Yelle. “Their collapsible nature allows for convenient stowage in my backpack when not in use, enhancing portability and versatility during my outdoor excursions.”

Tip Material and Accessories: Most trekking poles feature tips made of a material called tungsten carbide. It is tough and lightweight and won’t crack when jammed against rocks. But it’s not the best tip for use on snow or in mud, so look for trekking poles that come with tip accessories like snow baskets and rubber caps, which can convert the end of your hiking poles to suit the terrain and conditions you encounter.

How We Chose The Best Trekking Poles

Our contributor Steven John is a dedicated outdoorsman who loves hiking, climbing, mountaineering, and more. He has trekked up numerous mountains and logged thousands of miles on trails with the help of hiking poles, of which he owns five pairs. John’s firsthand experience with several excellent trekking pole brands did much to inform this article.

John also reached out to other outdoor product experts. These included Josanna Yelle, an avid outdoorswoman and founder of Adventuresome Jo , and freelance outdoor writer Paige Triola . Yelle and Triola offered tips on making the best use of trekking poles and also provided specific brand and product recommendations.

WHY YOU SHOULD TRUST US

Steven John has more than a dozen years of product testing and reviewing experience, and more than two dozen years of experience rambling through the wilderness. He has climbed the highest mountain in the continental U.S. four times, run a marathon in the Alps, and spent many nights in a tent. He also has logged a lot of miles on trails with trekking poles in his hands. In addition to writing for U.S. News & World Report, John also contributes to a number of other major publications, including Insider, New York Magazine, Dad Gear Review, Forbes, Architectural Digest, and more.

Length and weight are always the primary factors to consider when choosing trekking poles, with length adjustment a major issue if you’ll be heading up and down hills and mountains. But also consider what Yelle calls “performance and durability in changing environments,” and look for trekking poles that come with accessories like snow baskets and rubber caps. These can help you convert the functionality of your trekking poles to meet the conditions you encounter.

Any decent trekking pole should hold up well even if it's banged around for mile after mile of trail, so choosing a locking mechanism is primarily a matter of choice. Folding poles are usually lighter and more packable than telescoping poles, but they're a bit less durable. If you’re a trail runner or thru-hiker and weight really matters, folding poles are usually better. If you’re headed out for an overnighter in rugged terrain, telescoping poles may be your best bet. Just make sure your poles can indeed be easily adjusted as needed. “I appreciate trekking poles most on uphill hikes when I lean into them to practically vault myself upward, saving my burning leg muscles from doing all of the work,” says Triola.

Carbon fiber is lighter than aluminum and stronger on a pound-for-pound basis, but it’s a good deal more expensive. Which you choose will depend largely on your budget and how important weight is to you.

Grip material and texture don’t matter much if you’ll be trekking in gloves, but in warmer weather, they play a big role. Cork is great for absorbing sweat on muggy days. Foam grips are often made of EVA (ethylene-vinyl acetate) and have more give, provide a firm hold, and offer the best support on trying terrain.

To see how they compare to the rest of the market, check out GearJunkies Best Trekking Poles Buyers Guide.

Collapsible, Cheap, and Tough Enough Traction: Trekology Trek-Z 2.0 Trekking Poles Review2

I tested these trekking poles in muck, slick rock, and volcanic cinders — with great success; (photo/Samuel Martin) Whether a seasoned adventurer or a casual hiker, trekking poles are invaluable companions that can significantly enhance your comfort and performance on the trail.

These poles aren’t just about convenience; theyre about performance.

Collapsible, Cheap, and Tough Enough Traction: Trekology Trek-Z 2.0 Trekking Poles Review3

A good mud basket is essential for keeping your trekking poles from sinking in; (photo/Samuel Martin) Built in the Pacific Northwest, Trekology was founded by a tight-knit group of passionate Ph.D. engineers fueled by their love for nature and a vision of crafting high-quality products accessible to all. From the outset, theyve remained true to their mission, developing a wide array of in-house-designed products that uphold their commitment to delivering top-notch outdoor gear at affordable prices.

First Impressions: No Lightweight There is no getting around it — these poles are hefty.

Collapsible, Cheap, and Tough Enough Traction: Trekology Trek-Z 2.0 Trekking Poles Review4

The EVA foam grips werent a favorite, but they will last for a long time; (photo/Samuel Martin) Some may think heavy gear means it’s over-engineered and built to last.

Included with each set is a full suite of tips tailored for various terrains, ensuring youre equipped to handle whatever terrain you may encounter. While in Oregon, I used the mud stop during a wet and muddy hike, the rubber feet while on a slick rock trail, and the carbine tip for steep coastline travel. The application to secure these tips on and off was easy and secure.

Collapsible, Cheap, and Tough Enough Traction: Trekology Trek-Z 2.0 Trekking Poles Review5

The flip-lock mechs on these poles are no joke, and they clamp and hold tightly; (photo/Samuel Martin) A highlight of these poles is the robust metal flip-lock mechanisms.

Easy to Travel With The compact design of the Trek-Z 2.0 poles is undoubtedly their greatest asset.

Collapsible, Cheap, and Tough Enough Traction: Trekology Trek-Z 2.0 Trekking Poles Review7

The collapsible functionality of these poles make them ideal for traveling; (photo/Samuel Martin) Room for Improvement When it comes to trekking poles, the Goldilocks pair is hard to find. Trekology has designed a great set of utilitarian poles with the Trek-Z 2.0s that will help you travel across a wide range of terrain.

If I had a seat at the designers table, I might have tried to work the grip into a more comfortable size and whittled the weight down.

For the money, however, its tough to argue with the value the Trek-Z poles bring to the table.

  Trekology Trek-Z 2.0: Conclusion

Collapsible, Cheap, and Tough Enough Traction: Trekology Trek-Z 2.0 Trekking Poles Review8

For less than $50, theres not much I can complain about on the Trek-Z poles; (photo/Samuel Martin) The Trekology Trek-Z 2.0 Trekking Poles strike a commendable balance between affordability, portability, and functionality.
