Your ultimate guide to egypt – the land of pharaohs, pyramids and more.

Egypt, a country located in the northeastern corner of Africa, is one of the oldest places on Earth. Rich in history and culture, it has been on almost every traveller’s bucket list. Maybe that's why Egypt tour packages are so popular amongst tourists.

And why wouldn’t it be so popular? From natural attractions to age-old monuments that are still shrouded in mystery, Egypt tour packages tend to give travellers a glimpse of this fascinating country we have read about in books. This African country is home to awe-inspiring pyramids and temples that are a part of most of the Egypt holiday packages and have stood up to the expectations of the travellers and made their Egypt trip unforgettable.

Famous for Red Sea Coast which is home to coral reefs and beach resorts and Sahara leading to refreshing oasis, Egypt holiday packages are something you should definitely look out for. In recent years, Egypt tourism has become very fashionable with the younger crowds. As a result, Egypt tour packages have started to offer more than they used to. It is, however, advisable to research about the country to ensure you have everything you want while browsing Egypt tour packages. We have listed down some information you need to know before you start planning your Egypt trip.

Egypt Tourism: Best Time to Visit

Major parts of Egypt are covered by desert and, as a result, it is warm all year round even in winters. Yet the best time to plan your Egypt tour is during the winter months – October to February. During this time, the temperature varies from 11 to 25 degrees. So, plan your Egypt tour in the months that suit you the best and check out the great deals on Egypt tour packages .

Egypt Tourism: Visa for Indians

Indians who are planning their Egypt tour need to apply for a visa from the Egypt Embassy or the Consulate of India. It is necessary to meet the visa requirements and submit the required documents in order to obtain a visa from India for their Egypt tour. Some Egypt tour packages might just offer visa assistance to help you get the document at the earliest.

Egypt Tourism: Best Places to Visit

Remember the movie ‘The Mummy’? Then you must remember Cairo too. Most Egypt tour packages include Cairo – the fascinating capital of Egypt, rich in history and culture. Your trip to the land of Pharaohs will be incomplete if you miss visiting this magnificent city. This city is the starting point for most Nile cruises and pyramid explorations. So include it in the Egypt holiday packages.

If you have pyramids on your mind, then a trip to Giza should be the next destination on your Egypt tour. It is one of the must-visit places in most of the Egypt tour packages . Giza plateau, which is a part of all the Egypt packages and situated in the immediate vicinity of Cairo, is home to some of the iconic Egyptian monuments. Hence, it is included in most of the Egypt holiday packages. The ultimate highlight of the city is the Pyramid of Giza, one of the seven wonders of the world and the Great Sphinx of Giza. A tour of these two monuments are included in almost all the Egypt packages available.

While going through the Egypt packages, check if Aswan is included or not. Located on the River Nile, it's more calm as compared to Cairo. So, it deserves to be the next destination on your Egypt tour and included in the Egypt tour packages. One can prefer taking a ferry ride on the Elephantine Island or wander in the vibrant streets which will make you relax for the rest of your Egypt trip. Egypt tourism has been a boon for this city as it has become the starting point for excursions to various temples, included in many Egypt holiday packages. So, checkout the Egypt tour packages and ensure Aswan is included in it.

Another city to be added in the Egypt tour packages is Luxor, which sits on River Nile in the east. This city is home to many famous temples like Temple of Karnak, Temple of Hatshepsut and more which are already a part of many Egypt holiday packages. So, spending a few days in this city, admiring colorful tombs and temples should be included in the itineraries of most of the Egypt tour packages .

Checkout for Hurghada in the Egypt tour packages as this is a resort town located next to the Red Sea. If you love diving, then you should definitely look for it in the Egypt holiday packages. This is one of the most visited tourist destinations in the country, with a plethora of hotels along the shore offering a relaxing getaway to the travellers. Ideal Egypt packages would definitely be inclusive of these above listed places.

Egypt Tourism: Local Dishes to Try

The country's national meal is kushari – a blend of rice, macaroni, lentils, and spiced tomato sauce, seasoned with chickpeas and onions. You can’t leave the country without trying this at least once on your Egypt tour. The best place to introduce this dish to your taste buds is Koshary El Tahrir, a restaurant in Cairo. So, while planning your itinerary, make sure to add this place to your day’s itinerary as most Egypt tour packages will include Cairo.

Ful Medames

Ful medames – a blend of crushed fava beans cooked in lemon juice, parsley, garlic, onion, and chilli pepper – is Egypt's second most popular dish and a must try on your Egypt tour. It's served with bread, which acts as a gamosa (or utensil) for eating. The dish is especially popular in Cairo and Giza, which are already a part of many Egypt packages.

Shawarma, a cone filled with pressed chicken or lamb and grilled in flame, is one of the traditional dishes of Egypt and a must try on your Egypt tour. It is usually served with sliced tomato or onion and rolled off in a foil paper. Semsema, which is famous for its juicy shawarmas, is the best place to eat this dish. So, with Cairo included in most of the Egypt tour packages , you should skip this place.

Tamiya, also known as Falafel, is a common street food, made of fava beans and parsley in a flat disc shape. It is usually eaten with salad. Felfela, a restaurant in Cairo, offers the best Tamiya. So, what are you waiting for? Don’t forget to add this place in the Egypt holiday packages and try the best Tamiya in town.

Things to Do on Your Egypt Trip

Sail on the river nile.

Sailing on the River Nile with your better half or your family is one such activity you cannot miss on your Egypt tour. So it’s a must have in the itinerary of the Egypt holiday packages. Felluca, a wooden sailboat, is where you can relax on the deck, enjoy cocktails and food on board, swim down the riverbed or party with the crew members. Sounds great? So, checkout the Egypt tour packages now and get ready for a cozy experience.

Explore Mummies at Mummification Museum

Egypt has always been known for its pyramids and mummies. So, here is a chance to check out the mummification process at the Mummification Museum in Luxor, which is a part of almost all the Egypt packages. It has a mummy room that has most of the famous royal mummies. For a very unique experience, look for this museum in Luxor while browsing Egypt tour packages.

Quad Bike Ride at Giza

Most of the holiday packages should include this. So, hurry up! Checkout the Egypt tour packages and make your way up and down the sand dunes of Giza.

Watch Sunset at Mount Sinai

Nothing could be more romantic than spending some private time watching a sunset at Mount Sinai with your partner. So, honeymooners should add this place in the Egypt packages. One can either climb up the hill or just take a camel ride. Tourists can also enjoy various cafes and restaurants on the way. Even if you come with your family or friends, Mount Sinai deserves a place in the Egypt tour packages .

Scuba Diving at Hurghada

Divers and marine lovers can opt for scuba diving at Hurghada as this place is located next to the Red Sea. Enjoy underwater photography, beautiful colorful fish and coral reefs while diving. So, don’t forget to look out for Hurghada in the Egypt packages and add this activity in your bucket list.

Egypt Tourism: Souvenirs to Look for

You can buy plenty of things from Egypt as souvenirs. Visit El-Khalili market in Cairo, which is a part of most of the Egypt packages, and shop to your heart’s satisfaction. So, while coming back from Egypt don’t forget to look out for mini pyramids, papyrus- dried banana leaf with Egyptian prints on it, Egyptian perfumes, brass and copper wares, smoking sheesha pipes and more.

Frequently asked questions about egypt tour packages, ques. how can i go to egypt from india.

Ans. Taking the air route is the best way to reach Egypt from India. Flights to Cairo are available from major cities in India. Indians must apply for a visa to enter Egypt and must apply for it in person. Online visas are not available for Indians. You can apply for a visa at the Egypt Consulate in Mumbai. You can choose one of the Egypt tour packages offered by MakeMyTrip which includes a visa to make the process simpler. The visa inclusive tour package costs around INR 58,000 per person. Moreover, most of the Egypt tour packages include flight bookings as well.

Ques. How much does an Egypt trip cost?

Ans. The Egypt tour packages from MakeMyTrip cost anywhere between INR 12,222 to INR 1,04,600 per person. The price depends on the days spent, the number of cities included, and the type of hotel. You will find budget-friendly packages that are suitable for couples and those for families. Visas are not part of most of the tour packages so you will have the visa cost added to the overall expense. Food and other transportation at the destination may not be part of the package. The shortest tour is for 4 nights and 5 days while the longest package has 6 nights and 7 days. They also have the respective cheapest and most expensive prices. The other packages have 5 nights and 6 days. The packages mainly include hotel booking. The other assorted inclusions in these tour packages are flights, transfers from the airport and to and from other cities, activities to do in each city.

Ques. Which Egypt tour packages are the best for couples?

Ans. MakeMyTrip offers many Egypt tour packages for couples. These packages generally have the duration of 6 nights and 7 days but have different cities and activities available. Visas are not included in these packages. But the flights, hotels, and activities will be taken care of. Here are two of the top packages available: Yellow Sands & Blue Waters - Hurghada Special: This is the economical package. The stay will be comfortable and at least one activity of the day is included in the price. The highlights of this trip include attractions in and around Cairo for 4 nights and a two-night stay in Hurghada. Soulmate Special - Cairo & Sharm El Sheikh: This is one of the luxury Egypt tour packages where you get to stay in 4-star hotels and see all the major shows and attractions in Cairo and Sharm El Sheikh. Desert safari and bike rides are the highlights of this trip. You will get to spend 3 nights each in these cities.

Ques. Do the Egypt tour packages cover only Cairo?

Ans. No, the Egypt tour packages at MakeMyTrip include three cities altogether. Most packages have only Cairo included. But three packages include either Sharm El Sheikh or Hurghada in it. While the Hurghada package is available for 6 nights and 7 days only, the Sharm El Sheikh is available for 5 nights and 6 days as well. Sharm El Sheikh is famous for the desert safari on camels and the quad bike safari through the sand. You must have tickets for both of these and they will be included in the packages. The transfer from the hotel to the location and back is also part of the package cost. Hurghada is known for its resorts and beaches. The stark contrast of golden sand against the blue sea is a spectacular view. You can enjoy the rides to other islands, diving, snorkelling, desert safaris on quad bikes, etc.

Ques. How much does it cost to see the pyramids?

Ans. Needless to say that the main attraction in Cairo is the three pyramids. They stand regally as symbols of the ancient marvels and have survived to prove it. The pyramids are open to the public and you can even go inside these tombs. All of these will need entry tickets. The day tour to the pyramids costs around INR 5,700 per person and the cost for the light and sound show is INR 3,070. A visit to these pyramids of Giza is part of the Egypt tour packages with the necessary transportation to and from the hotel. If you are wondering if photography is allowed in these Egyptian monuments, the answer is yes, it is allowed with no fees. You just need to get rid of the flash while taking the pictures. What makes the tour packages worthwhile is the grand light and sound show at these pyramids where they light up for the night. Their regular shows narrate the history in English.

Ques. How to spend 5 days in Egypt?

Ans. 5 days is the shortest period you need in Egypt. Here is a glimpse of a 5-day travel itinerary for Egypt tour packages.

  • Day 1: Arrive in Cairo, transfer to the hotel and check-in. Check-in is usually in the afternoon. You can relax for the rest of the day or go out to the city for the night.
  • Day 2: Have breakfast at the hotel and visit the pyramids of Giza. It takes about 3 hours. You could also visit the light and sound show in the evening. Tickets for each of these will either be part of the tour package or you can buy them in addition.
  • Day 3: Visit the ancient city of Alexandria. There you will see the Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa, Citadel of Qaitbay, Pompey’s Pillar, Roman amphitheatre, Serapeum, and the Bibliotheca Alexandrina. It will be a whole day tour.
  • Day 4: You can explore the city of Cairo for the day and do some shopping to find souvenirs. Day 5: Take the flight back home.

Ques. How many days should you spend in Egypt?

Ans. 7 to 14 days is the ideal duration for Egypt tour packages. If you are looking for Egypt tour packages for a quick vacation and want to cover the major places in Cairo, 5 days should be enough. The first day will be your arrival, which will take much time and the final will be your departure day when you will be busy packing up. It leaves you with 3 entire days to explore the pyramids and the Egyptian Museum, visit Alexandria, and explore the city day and night. You can also leave 1-2 days to visit Luxor and explore its attractions.

Ques. What is the best month to go to Egypt?

Ans. Egypt tour packages are available for any month of the year. But you need to choose them according to the weather conditions to help you enjoy the trip. The cooler months in Egypt are from October to April which is also the peak season. If you like to avoid crowds, choose the month before and after the season. The winter season has a temperature range of 21-33 degrees and the other months are much hotter. It is better to avoid the summer season from June to August when the temperatures could go to 36 degrees or higher. You will need some good sunscreen to protect your skin, regardless of the months you visit. If you choose the winter season, make sure that you have reservations and carry some light jackets since the night will be cooler.

Ques. What can you wear and not wear in Egypt?

Ans. The one thing you need to understand while booking any of the Egypt tour packages is the dress code so that you are neither underdressed nor unnecessarily overdressed. While there is no specific dress code for the tourists, there are a few things to keep in mind. Formal clothes are necessary only if you are invited to someone’s home. For men, short pants and sleeveless tops are not allowed inside mosques. Women should make sure to wear appropriate clothes that cover them well including their knees and shoulders. But to enter a mosque they should have their head, hands and legs covered properly.

Ques. How do I travel from Cairo to other cities in Egypt?

Ans. When you book any of the Egypt tour packages with MakeMyTrip, you can add the safe and secure airport transfer for your arrival and departure. As for the transportation to the various tourist sites, you will be getting it if they are part of the travel plan or if you have opted for the same. Otherwise, to travel to the various tourist places, you can get taxis or take the metro. Taxis may be slightly expensive. Buses are not a recommended way of transportation and trains can be crowded.

Egypt Tour Packages from India

Temple of Queen Hatshepsut, the female Pharaoh, on the west bank of the Nile at Luxor, Thebes.

Despite the recent political crisis, our Egypt trip packages  have remained popular. We believe that one of the main reasons for this is the fact that we’ve been in this business for nearly 60 years. This vast amount of “hands-on” experience has allowed us to design and fine tune package tours that represent excellent value for money, while at the same time being exceptionally safe and as enjoyable as ever. For example, some of our Nile cruise holidays  cost a fraction of what other tour operators are charging for standard Cairo; Aswan or Luxor tours.

When people book our Egypt tour packages from India, they have complete peace of mind in know that their holiday wishes are in good hands. To make our tours as convenient and as comfortable as possible, we’ve designed them with Cairo being the starting point.

Nobody wants to get off a plane after a long flight and immediately begin visiting tourist attractions . For this reason, you always get to spend at least one night relaxing in your luxury hotel before the real action begins.

While we do offer stand-alone Cairo tours , we have also made sure all our tours include a tour of the best sights in and around this enchanting city. Every first time visitor to Egypt wants to see the Great Pyramids of Giza and the iconic Sphinx, but if you’ve already seen these attractions, then there are still many other tours to choose from, and if you still don’t find the ideal package, then you can take advantage of our ever popular custom Egypt tours  which we tailor to your specified requirements.

If you opt for this option, please remember to give us as much information as possible, including things like your preferred duration; most desirable attractions, and your budget. The more information you give us, the easier it will be for us to structure a tour you’ll never forget.

Passport and Visa Requirements

Dubai and Egypt tours from India - Passport with Egyptian visa and stamps

Passport with Egyptian visa and stamps.

Despite what you might read on some websites, Indian nationals cannot obtain a visa on arrival in Egypt . If you are considering Egypt tour packages from India, you will need to apply for a tourist visa at any Egyptian consulate or embassy in India prior to traveling to Egypt. This can be done either in person or through a visa agency.

Tourist visas are valid for a period of 3 months as from date of issue and they allow you to remain in the country for up to one month as from your date of arrival. If your chosen tour includes a visit to neighboring countries, you will require a multiple entry tourist visa. This will allow you to leave and re-enter the country as many times as you want prior to your tourist visa expiring.

As of February 2014, visas for Indian nationals cost INR 2,900 for a single entry and INR 4,000 for a multiple entry. As is the case with many countries, you may be refused a visa if your passport is valid for less than six months after the date of your intended stay, and your passport must have at least one blank page.

In order to be considered for the above mentioned visas, applicants also need to submit the following documents when they apply:

  • A cover letter stating the purpose of visit
  • One Copy of the identification pages of the passport
  • Visa Application Form completely filled out and duly signed (Print out and photocopy are accepted)
  • Two recent photographs (3.5x 4.5 cm) of the applicant (preferably not older than 3 months)
  • Confirmed return air ticket or proof of onward journey
  • Detailed tour itinerary
  • Proof of finance (Credit Card Statement; Bank statement  covering the last six months)
  • Copy of income tax returns from last three years
  • A complete list of all hotel reservations in Egypt as a proof of accommodation.
  • A letter of leave approval from the employer

EXCEPTION: Indian nationals arriving in the country at Sharm El Sheikh; St. Catherine or Taba airports can enter Egypt without any visa for a period not exceeding 14 days. During this time, you are not permitted to travel outside of the Sinai Peninsula region.

NOTE: If you book your Egypt vacation  or Nile cruise through us, we can send you an invitation letter once you have confirmed your tour and paid your deposit. This can be a big help when you apply for your visa, particularly if you don’t meet some of the above criteria.

When to Travel to Egypt from India?

Egypt packages tours from India - Wall with hieroglyphs

Wall with hieroglyphs in Karnak Temple, Luxor.

The best way to describe Egypt’s weather would be to say “Hot & Dry” but just like any other country, there are seasonal changes. The coolest months of the year are from October  to April , and as a result, this is also the high season.

The hottest months are from May  to September , and for many people, and especially those who come from cold countries, the extreme heat can be unbearable in most parts of the country. During these months tourist numbers – and tour prices – fall dramatically.

Egypt tour packages from India tend to peak just prior to the high season and also just after the high season. Most Indians find the weather to be quite pleasant during these months, and by booking your vacation outside of the high season, you can get far better value for your money.

During the high season, the cost of everything goes up, including Egypt tour packages from India; accommodation, and etc.

Safety Tips and Travel Advice

Egypt has been welcoming tourists for countless years already, not only because the country has so much to see and do, but also because the country has an excellent reputation regarding the safety of tourists. Even with the recent political crisis, tourists have been arriving in the country and have had a great time without ever being in harm’s way.

With all of that having been said, a bit of planning and a little common sense can go a long way in helping you to avoid potential problems when choosing our amazing Egypt tour packages from India:

  • Anything of value which you don’t need to have with you should be left in the safes which are generally available free of charge in all major hotels
  • Avoid large gatherings and avoid walking around in quite unfamiliar places after dark
  • Always follow any and all safety advice offered by tour guides and/or our company representatives, particularly in the very busy tourist attractions such as the Giza Pyramids
  • Avoid confrontation with locals and tourists alike. Vendors at the bazaar and markets can be extremely pushy, to the point where you might be tempted to speak your mind. However, it is best to just go on your way rather than get caught up in a potentially unpleasant situation.
  • Avoid getting into discussions about politics and/or religion
  • Dress appropriately when visiting religious sites, and especially mosques

Tour Name: Experience Egypt Cultural Sightseeing in 10 Days

This was the trip of a lifetime that I was able to have with my eldest son - an absolutely Read More amazing experience. To be able to actually see the places and artifacts that I had read about and studied was truly phenomenal. Our hotels were great, the travel to and from sites was completely taken care of, we never felt unsafe or left to our own devices, and the itinerary was just right. But what made the experience so fab was our two guides - Mahmoud Nour in Luxor/Aswan/Abu Simbel and "Max" in Cairo/Memphis/Saqqara. They taught us history and context as it related to each site we visited and they indulged my myriad questions. They were both so incredibly knowledgeable and my questions were never ignored or unanswered. In addition, they shared their culture with us and treated us to some awesome dining experiences. We were reminded that Egypt is more than just ancient ruins. I would recommend without reservation this tour experience. And "hats off" to Mahmoud and Max!!! I left feeling like I had made some great new friends. And I can't wait to try some home-made kushari. Read Less

They wor Read More k with phenomenal guides (we had Mahmoud Nour in Upper Egypt and Mohsen aka Max in Lower Egypt...I would recommend asking for these guides by name, as they were truly superb), make all the necessary arrangements in terms of drivers, covid testing, hotels, and in-country flights, and can tailor your tour to whatever it is you most want to see. The entire experience was smooth from start to finish. Both Mahmoud and Max spoke excellent English, were extremely knowledgeable, and went out of their way to ensure our experience was everything we hoped it would be. This was the second time I have used ETP, and I will continue to recommend them to anyone who expresses any interest in exploring Egypt. We especially liked that our tour group was limited to only our party, which meant we got one-on-one attention at all the sites, and allowed us to get answers to all our questions. And for those of you who are worried about safety or health in Egypt, in our experience it was extremely safe, and we never had any issues related to COVID-19. They have all the amenities you would expect to find at any good hotel. Most also have various forms of on-board entertainment in the evenings, including Egyptian Belly Dance Shows, Folkloric Shows, and etc.

Nile River cruises include full board, and offer a perfect blend of sightseeing and relaxation. During your cruise, you can look forward to daily onshore excursions to see some of Egypt’s most famous ancient sites. These excursions are small group tours that you share with a small number of our other clients. One of our English speaking Egyptologist tour guides will also accompany you on all tours during your cruise.

Some of our Egypt tours from India also include a few days on the Red Sea coast. Our Red Sea SCUBA diving packages, for example, are incredibly popular. The coastline around places like Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh is home to many of the world’s finest dive sites.

We also have a selection of Egypt travel packages from India that include a Sahara Desert safari and/or a Sahara Desert oases tour. All desert trips are undertaken in modern air-conditioned 4×4 vehicles. These trips allow you to experience traditional Bedouin culture in comfort and style. They also allow you to see and explore many fascinating ancient sites that are located off the main tourist trail.

While we are happy to customize/tailor any one of our existing Egypt tourism packages from India, it is worth noting that we are not able to customize cruise itineraries.

Egypt Passport and Visa Requirements for Indian Travelers

Passport  – Everyone who visits Egypt, including Indian nationals, must be in possession of a valid passport. Your passport should also have at least one blank page, and it must have at least 6 months validity remaining. If you are planning on booking one of our multi-destination Egypt tours from India, you will need at least one blank page in your passport for each country featured in your chosen tour itinerary.

Visas  – At the time of this post being written, people who are traveling on an Indian passport are not able to apply for a Visa-On-Arrival in Egypt. They also cannot apply for an online Egypt e-Visa. In other words, if you will be traveling on an Indian passport, you will have to apply for your Egypt tourist visa at an Egyptian embassy or consular office in India.

In addition to passport-sized photos and your visa application form, you will also be asked to submit a number of other supporting documentation. For example you will need to provide a copy of your bank statement showing that you have sufficient funds to support yourself while you are in Egypt. You may also be asked for a copy of your planned tour itinerary and etc.

When you book one of our Egypt tours from India, we will of course send you your detailed tour itinerary. This will include a list of any and all hotels that you will be staying in during your Egypt trip from India. We will also assist you in any way we can with your visa application.

While the visa application process may seem rather complicated, it is worth remembering that countless people visit Egypt with Indian passports. However, if you feel a bit intimidated by the visa application process, then you may want to consider using the services of a reputable visa agent. You will be charged a fee for the service, but using an agent can save you a lot of time.

Visa Requirements For Egypt Trip

Indian passport holders going on the Egypt tours can choose between an e-visa and a visa on arrival. A single-entry e-visa costs about INR 2,100 and is valid for 3 months from the date of issue. On the other hand, a multiple-entry visa costs around INR 4,800 and is valid for up to 180 days from the date of issue. Both visas are usually processed in 5-6 working days.

Alternatively, for Egypt tours from India, consider the convenient visa-on-arrival option. It costs approximately INR 2,100 for a single entry and INR 57,700 for a five-year multiple entry, valid for 30 days from arrival. Required documents for this include a filled-out form and payment in US dollars.

It is important to remember that passports must be valid for six months beyond your return date. The visa fee is non-refundable, and the e-visa cannot be extended. Both options streamline the process, making Egyptian adventures more accessible for Indian tourists.

  • A Thrilling Trip To Egypt From India In 2021 – Busting 6 Common Myths About This Wonderful Country

27 Mar 2023

Egypt had long been on Shivani’s mind. The mystical monuments, bizarre pyramids, Arabian towns, aromatic spice souks, and the famous Nile had been calling out to her for long, beckoning her to this lovely country. And when she finally got a chance to explore this Middle Eastern beauty with her son and husband, she planned her trip to Egypt from India in a way that would allow her to enjoy it to the fullest! See what all she did on her trip to make it memorable.

Egypt is a fascinating country and unlike any in the world. I have always wanted to see those Arabian deserts and enchanting pyramids with my own eyes. But the reviews of the country and the people kind of put me off. However, I did not let that damper my yearning to visit. I decided to go ahead with my trip and experience for myself what all this beautiful country had to offer, and boy am I glad that I did!

I chose to travel via TravelTriangle since they let me customize my itinerary and let me deal with the agent directly, something not many travel firms offer. The agent constantly kept me updated with the progress on my trip and I had nothing to worry about.

If you’re skeptical about taking that trip to Egypt yourself, let me bust a few myths about this wonderful country so that you can have the best of experiences there.

Why You Should Definitely Visit Egypt – Myths Vs Reality

Here are a few myths and misconceptions about Egypt that I came across on my trip to Egypt from India . Given below them are my experiences that prove none of these preconceived notions about Egypt are true:

MYTH 1: “The People Of Egypt Are Not Friendly”

best memories

I discovered that the locals of Egypt are some of the friendliest and most helpful folk in the world. People are extremely nice and hospitable. Whether it’s a shopkeeper in a general store or someone walking down the street, they would totally stop by to help you with whatever you need. The natives of Egypt are also very trustworthy people, and you’re least likely to be conned during your trip to Egypt.

MYTH 2: “Don’t Shop In Local Markets”

camel riding

The true essence and joy of shopping in Egypt lie in its local bazaars and souks. You haven’t truly experienced this place if you haven’t visited any of its bustling shopping streets brimming with the most authentic Middle Eastern goods and handicrafts. We had been told that shopkeepers in these local markets quote ridiculously high prices, do not let you bargain, and do not offer quality products. None of that is true.

You’ll find people selling authentic merchandise in the markets and souks of Egypt that are very much open to bargaining. Besides, it’s their sole means of livelihood, and most of the craft items, clothes, handbags, food, home decor items, and souvenirs you buy here are handmade, which is why the prices tend to be higher than what you get elsewhere. But you’ll find it all to be worth every penny you spend.

We ourselves ended up buying a variety of beautiful souvenirs and gift items from these markets in dirt cheap rates. We also bought the local ‘namkeen’ – packets of roasted seeds of fruits like watermelons, pumpkins, and sunflowers that are salted and spiced.

MYTH 3: “Dress Conservatively. Your Arms And Legs Should Be Covered”

memorable trip

We could find a number of tourists roaming around wearing hot pants and sleeveless tops, and none of the locals were raising an objection against travelers who were not covered from head to toe. Nowadays, people are very open to wearing whatever they want in these Middle Eastern nations without being looked down upon or ridiculed in public. One should, however, cover their legs, arms, and heads before entering any holy place such as a mosque.

MYTH 4: “Book A Hotel Near Popular Attractions Like The Sphinx”

exploring the place

On the contrary, one should always book a hotel that lies within the city limits. This way, you’ll be closer to a lot of facilities like grocery stores, pharmacies, vehicle rentals, and restaurants to help you in times of need. Staying in a hotel in the middle of the desert offering nothing other than gorgeous views of the Sphinx and the pyramids will not do you any good in case an emergency arises. Plus, they’re also pretty expensive!

Staying in or near the city will allow you to see more than just the famous tourist attractions, and you can explore Egypt more like a local than a tourist.

MYTH 5: “Egypt Is Just About Barren Deserts, Lofty Pyramids & Camel Rides”

 fascinated with Egypt’s history

No sir! There’s so much more to this country than meets the eye. Scholars and history geeks will totally love being here, owing to the treasure trove of knowledge and wisdom it provides to its visitors. From the Light and Sound Show at the Sphinx and the Giza pyramids to the informative and guided tour of the Egyptian Museum, you’ll be surprised by how much you will end up learning here.

My son was fascinated with Egypt’s history, museums, and even mummies. He was constantly taking notes throughout our Egypt tour. He was super ecstatic about visiting the Aswan Dam that he had been studying about for weeks, and the pictorial representation of the construction of this dam that he found near this attraction itself helped him gain in-depth knowledge about the same.

Seeing the pyramids and learning how they came into being was the most exceptional experience of my trip. The Egyptian Museum didn’t tell us about them as much as the Light & Sound Show did. The geometrical dexterity from every angle was simply mind-blowing, and it made us wonder how the people who built it had this kind of a technology thousands of years ago!

MYTH 6: “You Won’t Find Good Vegetarian Food In Egypt”

love being here

The other thing we came across on our trip to Egypt from India is that the food of Egypt is very similar to that of India. So, there’s no reason for Indian travelers, even vegetarians, to be afraid. The spices are also more or less the same. In fact, much of India’s exotic spices are imported from Egypt. You’ll find good outlets and vendors making delicious Shawarmas and Falafels almost at every corner, two of Egypt’s most famous dishes that have now turned into my favorites!

Whether you’re a vegetarian or a non-vegetarian, you’ll totally love the food options in Egypt during your Egypt tour from India. And the best part – good Egyptian cuisine at pocket-friendly rates won’t be hard to find.

We owe a big thanks to TravelTriangle for making our holiday experience an unforgettable one. We would like to make a special mention of the commendable services provided by the agent in Egypt. To begin with, from the moment we exited the Cairo airport to when we were escorted back to it, he was constantly there. Extremely efficient, polite, helpful, and cooperative, he made sure we had a smooth hotel check-in, used to help us with our bags, was always on time for our pickups and drops and had helped us get our visa. And there was no language barrier, so we could easily communicate with him. Our trip to Egypt from India couldn’t have been this mus fantastic if it was not planned by them. Kudos to them.

Common Queries We Had While Planning Our Holiday

We had quite a few doubts while we were planning our trip. Now that we’re back from our trip to Egypt from India, we would like to answer them to help you book yours smoothly.

Do you know any interesting facts about Egypt?

The pyramids were, by far, the most interesting aspect owing to their geometrical accuracy that just blew our minds. We learned a great deal about the interesting history of Egypt and the origin of the Giza pyramids at the museum and the Light & Sound Show. Even the temples of Luxor and the city of Alexandria had a curious history that can put one in a trance. In fact, everything about this marvelous country was intriguing, no matter where we went.

What is the most common food in Egypt?

We could find Shawarmas and Falafels at every nook and corner. Other than this, roasted salted seeds of fruits like pumpkin, sunflower, and watermelon seemed to be the favorite snack of all Egyptians. You could easily find them in all grocery stores across Egypt.

What is the best time to visit Egypt?

The best time to visit Egypt is ideally from November to April. We had visited in April and it was already starting to get warmer. The air is very dry during this time, so make sure you carry plenty of water as well as keep your skin moisturized regularly.

How much should an Egypt trip cost?

Overall, our trip cost us around 1 lakh per person, including the stay, shopping, transfers, and other tidbits. For a trip of 9 days to cities like Cairo and Aswan, the ideal Egypt trip cost from India should be between 3-5 lakhs depending on your choice of accommodation and modes of transit.

How should female tourists dress in Egypt?

Females are recommended to dress modestly in Egypt. They can wear sundresses with leggings and denim with non-revealing tops. Also, they must keep a scarf with them as there are some tourist attractions where they would need to cover their heads.

What is the coldest month in Egypt?

January is considered as the coldest month in Egypt when the temperature is about 14°C.

Top 5 airlines flying to Egypt

The flight was slightly delayed because of change of plane but informed beforehand. Flight was very good and comfortable

Superb like always. On time and quite comfortable. Only thing is that the arrival movement was by bus.

We were boarded by bus. That was a bit of pain.

This booking was as a result of stolen identity and hacking my debit account. I reported it to my bank. The thief tried to book two flights, maybe more. Hopefully, Kayak will be able to block fraudulent bookings and charges better in the future.

Very friendly and efficient staff. Would definitely fly Saudia again.

Entertainment for non Arabic speakers is very limited. Seats were comfortable. Seat map while booking showed 2-2-2 config, but the flight had 1-2-1..

The seats’ reclined like premium economy seats, ie, not much.. but leg space was a lot l, so it did not feel cramped. Crew was very friendly and helpful.

It’s like two different companies managing fligh from DC and totally horrible company between Jeddah and Cairo

Good variety could have been better; crew not as friendly

Since it leaves at 2:00am you sleep through most of it.

Flight was delayed, but there was no explanation why. Seats were comfortable and service was good. Food was good and there were more snacks than I expected.

The best way to fly is saudia airlines flight Every thing is better (Number one 🫶) Thank you

I have been traveling for over 30 years, and this was THE worst experience ever. The guy that was checking in at Dubai, didn’t have any professionalism or curtesy. During the flight, You had to wait a while just to get something to drink. They didn’t transfer all my luggage, even after they made me pay $155 extra for one small gallon of Zamzam water, and that luggage is still missing after three days of my arrival. NEVER AGAIN..,

The flight was cancelled with very little info at the airport. Absolutely mess with no option to reschedule flights without paying fortune for business class.

Despite paying business class, the angle seat was uncomfortable. The crew was just ok. The baggage checkin was a mess at JNB.

The seats were broken, crew didn’t really care about service, boarding was not priority for business class, my bags arrived last

Comfortable flight with decent legroom and good seats. The crew were helpful and courteous and managed well with the stressful boarding and the chaos that’s involved. The food was decent, more than expected from a short flight like this. The only reservation I have was that the crew allowed passengers to board With massive amounts of hand luggage which were piled up on the empty seats next to passengers and and it was a risk to all passengers in the case of turbulence or emergency landing. I’ve never seen this ever on any flights I have boarded with many other airlines.

Flight was supposed to take off Saturday at noon. Bumped for unknown reasons until 2 am, then 9 am, then noon, then we don’t know. Not weather related. Dismal and non existent customer service. No 24/7 relations. Couldn’t get my bag back to attempt to get on another flight until 5pm Saturday. Will never take this airline again!

Greater clarity in organizing line-ups for the various boarding groups would have made it easier for all. Due to the many children, the announcements could not be heard clearly enough, so a simplicity in organization would have helped.

I had a great experience with EGYPTAIR. They offered me to check in my handbag which made it very easy since I use a cane. Thank you to EGYPTAIR crew for making sure everyone is receiving the right services.

1st of all on February 27th Abu Dhabi to Delhi flight the seat wasn't comfortable at all, coming back the Lounge at Abu Dhabi didn't have anything. Than the Food in the flight

Overall mediocre experience. Check in was good. They're were discriminatory. They were not attentive, food choices were not vegetarian friendly. The food served was frozen.

Crew were very polite and quicker in service. Excellent cooling, comfortable seats and tasty food served

In my opinion, Etihad Airways is a first rate airline except for one important element. On the day before my return flights, when I chose my seats on the Etihad website I was charged an additional $55 (US) in order to sit on the aisle. I was not at all happy about this additional "hidden" charge and I felt cheated.

1.Aircraft Comfort: The aircraft type was quite small with non-reclining, cramped seats that significantly lacked comfort. 2.In-flight Entertainment: There was no provision of in-flight entertainment screens or Wi-Fi for the majority of the flight. 3.Boarding Process at New Abu Dhabi Airport: Despite the move to a new airport, which promised enhanced experiences, the use of buses instead of jet bridges did not meet expectations, causing inconvenience. 4.Gate Change Communication: A last-minute gate change was poorly communicated, resulting in a long and difficult walk.

Very unfriendly team. It was very difficult to get a cup of coffee. Legroom was extremely small. Old, dilapidated plane.

Ripped off and broken seats in Business class. Seats stink and need to request the staff for additional bedsheets. Crew if very friendly though

Crew was good, boarding mediocre, food choices were limited, seating was not comfortable

Everything is good and improved and needs to improve economy class seat more specious so long journey we can enjoy and it will be give more relaxable. Overall all services good and safely landed . I enjoyed my journey and all the cabin crew members services very well.

The flight was small and was not cool very bad

Comfortable seats. Be aware there is no alcohol on this airline.

Seats were comfortable. Be aware there is no alcohol on this airline.

Every thing was very food except the meal. It was a sandwich of something like a beef kebab. It was really bad in terms of hardness as well as taste. We were a family of 7 persons non of us could eat it his sandwich. Cake was good.

It was very nice flight only suggestions to upload recent videos and English subtitles. Thanks

Wheelchair service is not available right away on Kuwait Airways

Everybody was so nice to treat me good all the workers When I came to Bangladesh there was just a little problem with the luggage but I got my luggage it took like two hours Other than that everything is good

Food quality should be upgrade. Plastic spoons looks like not good as well as food quality not up to the mark.

Everything was great specially the seats was comfortable even I was in the economy and the food was really Great👍

Not much on entertainment, food was good but not delicious, flight was on time

The crew was attentive and kind. The business class cabin wasn’t very full during the flight so the service was catered to your specific needs.

Best time to visit egypt.

Egypt is blessed with lots of sunshine and very little rain. Generally, the hottest months are June to August, and the coolest month is January. Rainfall is negligible, except on the coast, with rain usually occurring during the winter months (December to March).

During the summer months (from June to August), daily temperatures can reach over 100 degrees Fahrenheit (40 degrees Celsius) - perfect for snorkeling and soaking up the sun on the beaches of Sinai, but can prove challenging for some in the crowded streets and souqs of Cairo.

Choose to escape the crowds by traveling from March to May or September to November when the weather is milder, and there's the opportunity to experience Egypt during Ramadan and the celebrations of Eid (which marks the breaking of the fast). If you are planning to travel during Ramadan, it's important to consider that many restaurants and shops will either be closed or operating at reduced hours.

Culture and customs

Life in Egypt has been in a state of flux since the 2011 revolution. Many of the issues that motivated so many to take to the streets in protest continue to be points of contention, but Egyptians remain hopeful, relying on religion, family and humor to get them through, like they have for thousands of years. A strong sense of community binds people across the country. Families and communities support each other and there is a prevailing sense that everyone is in it together. For all these reasons, most express great pride in being Egyptian, despite their nation’s recent turmoil.

As a largely Muslim country (about 90% of the population is Muslim while most of the remaining 10% identify as Coptic Christian), Islam permeates daily activities. Life revolves around the five daily prayers and everything is closed on Friday, the Muslim holy day. A wide array of cultural norms, including how people dress and interact with the opposite sex, are influenced by religion. Women are largely defined by their role as a mother and matron of the house, whereas men are expected to be the provider.

Many Egyptians consider their country the gateway between the West and the rest of the Arab world, and take pride in their ability to mix tradition with modern influences. This mixing is most apparent in major cities, such as Cairo and Alexandria, where American fast-food chains can be found next to traditional cafes, secular attitudes are more common, and pop music rings through city streets.

Food and drink

With fragrant spices, fresh fruit and vegetables, and delicious sweets on offer, culinary adventures in Egypt are guaranteed. On many Intrepid trips you'll be given the opportunity to dine with a local family – this offers a great chance to see how meals are prepared and learn more about the ingredients.

Things to try in Egypt

1. Hamam mahshi

A north African delicacy, hamam – roasted pigeon stuffed with cracked wheat and rice – can be found on the menu of most traditional Egyptian restaurants. You may need a few to fill up though, as they don’t contain a lot of meat. And be careful of all the tiny bones.

2. Ta'ameya (falafel)

Crunchy on the outside, and moist on the inside, these deep-fried balls of spiced fava beans are a Middle Eastern vegetarian staple. Usually served in a pita with salad, pickles, and sesame-based tahina - buy it at a street stall for a quick, cheap meal.

Shops specializing in this popular ‘poor man’s dish’ can be found throughout Cairo. A hearty mix of rice, macaroni and lentils, chickpeas, and fried onions, koshary is topped with a tomato-vinegar sauce.

4. Ful medames

Don't leave Egypt without trying the classic dish of ful medames, which can be traced back to pharaonic times. Consisting of slow-cooked fava beans, served with olive oil, parsley, garlic, and lemon juice - add some spice by seasoning with chili paste and eat with bread.

5. Pastries

Delicious, sweet pastries are found in restaurants, markets, and cafes in Egypt. Never was there a better time to live by the adage ‘Life is short, eat dessert first’.

Egypt is a mostly Muslim country, and any consumption of alcohol here is relatively low-key. There are many fantastic alternatives. Juice stands are common on main streets offering freshly squeezed banana, guava, or mango juice. Karkadai is a chilled, crimson drink brewed from hibiscus leaves (served hot in the winter). And tea (or shai) is the beverage of choice for most Egyptians, which is sipped throughout the day and with meals.

Geography and environment

Located in the northeast corner of Africa, Egypt shares its borders with Israel and the Palestinian Territories, Libya, and Sudan, as well as the Mediterranean Sea to the north and the Red Sea to the east. The two seas are connected by the man-made Suez Canal.

The remote triangle-shaped peninsula is largely characterized by limestone and desert, but also has a vibrant coral reef along the Red Sea coastline. Hot, dry desert covers most of the country’s terrain, with the Western Desert occupying much of the west, and the Arabian (or Eastern) Desert stretching the length of the eastern coast. These two regions are dissected by the Nile River, which runs the length of the country, emptying into the Mediterranean Sea. The Nile Valley, a narrow fertile band extending from the river, is the country’s only fertile land and where 98% of the population lives.

History and government

Recent history.

Napoleon Bonaparte, the infamous pint-sized French leader, invaded Egypt in 1798, seeking to set up a French colony. However, not long after, the French were repelled, and Egypt became a part of the Ottoman Empire once again.

From 1882, the British Army occupied Egypt to protect the Suez Canal. Muhammad Ali officially ruled from the early 1800s, and his family and successors continued to rule for decades (alongside and during British occupation) until overthrown by a military coup in 1952.

During World War II, Egypt became a crucial element in Britain's defense. The Italian Army tried to advance into Egypt in 1940 but was stopped by the British Army at Mersa Matruh. Egypt continued to serve as a vital base for British troops during World War II and despite the disruption, Egypt's shopkeepers and retail trade benefitted from the thousands of Allied troops staying in Egypt.

In 1953, Egypt was officially declared a republic, and a year later, Colonel Nasser was declared Prime Minister, then President. In 1979, after decades of confrontation with neighboring Israel, the historic Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty was signed. This agreement made Egypt the first Arab country to officially recognize Israel as a country - a significant step in the peace process. More recently, in February 2011, large-scale protests and mass demonstrations resulted in the removal of President Mubarak after decades of autocratic rule.

Early history

Ancient Egypt has been the focus of much fascination, investigation, speculation, and intrigue. It's hard to escape the education system without having studied Ancient Egypt in some way. Drawn in by the mighty pyramids, mysterious hieroglyphics, distinct burial rituals and animal-headed gods - scholars, students, historians, and travelers are all amazed by this civilization which has endured cycles of dynastic rule, invasion, and natural disasters.

Through key archaeological finds, historians have been able to unravel some of the mysteries of this great land. What is known is that the daily life of the average Egyptian usually involved working in agriculture with the waters of the Nile providing fertile ground for planting crops. Egyptians usually lived in modest homes with children and domestic pets. Professions were usually inherited - so if your father was a farmer, then so were you.

While most Egyptians led simple lives, dynasties of Pharaohs led lavish lifestyles, with the most well-known being Ramses II, Hatshepsut, Akhenaten, Tutankhamun, and Cleopatra. Huge monuments, imposing pyramids, golden artifacts, and detailed paintings all hold details about pharaonic rule and succession, as well as commonly held beliefs about religion and the afterlife.

Spanning centuries and full of drama worthy of a soap opera, the epic history of Ancient Egypt is complex and we suggest you read about it before visiting.

A provider of irrigation, an essential travel route, home to hippos and crocodiles, and now a source of leisure for locals and travelers alike, the Nile is an aquatic link to Egypt’s ancient heritage.

4. Terrific temples

Discover an enormous open-air museum like no other. The awe-inspiring Temples of Karnak are filled with stately statues, immense columns, and gigantic gateways. Explore this intriguing site and be left in no doubt about the brilliance of the ancient Egyptian civilization.

5. Holy mountain

Embark on a trek to the top of Mt Sinai and witness an incredible golden sunrise to remember. A place of worship for many faiths, a pilgrimage to Mt Sinai reveals stunning scenery, an ancient monastery and historic chapels. An iconic highlight of Egypt for believers and non-believers alike, Mt Sinai is not to be missed.

6. Double happiness

Located in the Nile Valley, the unique Temple of Kom Ombo is a ‘double temple’ and a rare archaeological find. Dedicated to two gods, a visit here is a true highlight of an Egyptian escapade. Marvel at the well-preserved wall reliefs, try to decipher the hieroglyphics and honour the craftsmen who created this wonder.

7. Museum magic

Step into a dazzling world of antiquity at the Egyptian Museum. Be amazed by the glittering treasures recovered from King Tutankhamun’s tomb – with jewelry, furniture, chariots and that famous gold funerary mask, this pharaoh was certainly prepared for the afterlife.

8. Roman ruins

The Roman ruins of Kom el-Dikka in Alexandria may not be the biggest, but they are certainly among the best-preserved in Egypt, if not the world. Soak up the atmosphere of the Roman amphitheater and imagine it in all its glory - packed with 800 spectators ready for action.

9. Colossal characters

Near the modern city of Luxor stand the imposing Colossi of Memnon. These massive stone statues of Amenhotep III, while badly damaged, still maintain an unmistakable air of authority. Stand below them and be dwarfed by the scale of these tremendous figures.

10. The ancient heart of Cairo

Wander the cobbled streets of Islamic Cairo and uncover the ancient heart of this chaotic city. Admire mosques, palaces and houses, and peruse the goods on offer at one of the world’s oldest bazaars. Dating back to medieval times, the Khan al-Khalili bazaar is where people have traded goods for centuries.

Souqs – or open-air bazaars – are both the best place to shop in Egypt and attractions in their own right. The biggest and most famous souq is the 500-year-old Khan El Khalili Bazaar in Cairo. Within the maze of narrow streets and laneways lie stalls selling jewelry, glass, copper, spices and artisan goods, along with more standard tourist fare. Quality can vary greatly so spend some time shopping around.

Like many markets around the world, bargaining is the norm, but Egyptians take it to another level. Expect to be offered tea (it can take that long) and for elaborate theatrics from the seller. While bazaars in Cairo tend to sell everything, visit Aswan’s bazaar for spices, incense, and basketwork, and Luxor for cheaply priced alabaster figurines and vases. It's also a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country.

Things to buy in Egypt

You’ll often see spices piled high in bazaars. In addition to making a great photo for Instagram, they’re often a good buy as long as you keep a couple of things in mind. Always buy whole spices rather than ground to ensure freshness and skip the ‘saffron’ – it’s actually safflower and tastes like dust.

2. Glassware

Hand-blown Muski glass, recognizable by its air bubbles, comes in brilliant shades of blue and green and purple and has been made in Egypt since medieval times. Be careful with this purchase though as it’s extremely fragile.

3. Cartouche

A kind of nameplate written in hieroglyphics. Most gold or silver shops sell these and many can customize them by engraving your name.

Festivals and events

Eid al-fitr.

After fasting for an entire month, Muslims celebrate the end of Ramadan with Eid al-Fitr, or ‘Feast of Breaking the Fast’. For three days, starting on the first day of the tenth month of the lunar calendar, people celebrate with feasts, family, and festivals. Look for vendors selling kahk cookies (nut-filled cookies covered in powdered sugar) while taking in the festivities, a tasty treat synonymous with Eid for many locals.

Eid al-Adha

Arguably the most important holiday in Egypt, the ‘Feast of Sacrifice’ is not one for vegetarians and vegans. About 70 days after Eid al-Fitr, sheep, and goats are slaughtered (often in the middle of the street) for a mighty feast.

Sham el-Nessim

Each year on March 21st, Egyptians celebrate the coming of spring by spending the day outdoors. Join the locals for this ancient holiday by packing a picnic and heading to a park or public garden.

Abu Simbel Sun Festival

As if the two temples dedicated to Ramses II and Queen Nefertari weren’t impressive enough, they were constructed in such a way that twice a year, the sun’s rays reach its innermost chambers and illuminate three stone gods that reside within, while leaving Ptah (god of the underworld) in the dark. And those days just happen to be Ramses’s birthday (October 21) and coronation (February 21). Coincidence? We think not.

What to wear in Egypt

Summer temperatures can get very high, so light fabrics like linen, cotton and athletic gear made to take the heat are best. If you’re traveling outside of winter, don’t underestimate the cool change that can come in the evenings, especially if you’re spending the night in the desert or on a Nile cruise. Avoid packing anything in white – desert dust will quickly turn those light-colored clothes a not-so-delightful shade of brown.

How to plan the ultimate adventure in Egypt, from Cairo to the Red Sea

Feluccas drifting down the River Nile, ancient wonders found in dusty temples, warm waters filled with tropical fish: Egypt remains one of the world’s most atmospheric destinations.

With millennia-old pyramids, hallowed temples and intricately painted tombs worthy of an art gallery, Egypt has a mindboggling amount of history on show. Some of the first threads of human civilisation started here over 5,000 years ago, and Egyptians still call their country umm al dunya — mother of the world.

Egypt offers the opportunity to time-travel like few other places. The past seems to keep careful watch over the present. The Pyramids of Giza — the last survivor of the original seven wonders of the ancient world — overlook cacophonous Cairo , the third-largest metropolis in Africa and the biggest in the Middle East. South along the River Nile, a temple built more than 3,400 years ago stands in the centre of the modern city of Luxor, which was once ancient Thebes.

The Nile flows through the hearts of most of Egypt’s major cities. This blue-green ribbon keeps the ever-encroaching biscuit-coloured desert at bay, coaxing lush plant life amid the Saharan sands. Fly in a hot-air balloon over the west bank of Luxor to see just how abruptly the desert reasserts its dominance over riverbanks lined with date palms and green grasses. Or travel like royalty, following in the footsteps of legendary pharaohs and their armies and merchants, on a scenic multi-day cruise along the Nile, making the temples and tombs between riverside Luxor and Aswan easily accessible.

( A practical guide to travelling in Egypt. )

Egypt’s extensive pharaonic history takes centre stage for most travellers, but even more adventure awaits on a different waterfront, to the east along the Red Sea in the Sinai Peninsula. The three Abrahamic faiths — Christianity, Islam and Judaism — put great credence in stories said to have unfolded in the mountains of the Sinai. Most famously, Moses is supposed to have received the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai, and listened to God at the burning bush, where he was instructed to lead the Israelites out of Egypt.

These high peaks make a stunning backdrop for surfacing snorkellers and for scuba divers returning from explorations of the Red Sea. Beneath the water’s surface, a bountiful aquarium of sea turtles, sharks and neon-bright fish dart around flourishing coral reefs that sprout along the sea floor and scale the vertical walls. Witnessing the wildlife of the Red Sea is one of the world’s great underwater experiences, and pairing it with a Nile cruise allows travellers to experience the broad range of Egyptian adventures.

Itinerary 1: The Nile Valley

Start point: Cairo End point: Abu Simbel Distance travelled: 725 miles Average length: 10 days

Herodotus, the 5th-century BCE Greek historian, famously called Egypt the ‘gift of the Nile’, but perhaps that description doesn’t go far enough. Egypt would be almost nothing without it. The river, the longest in the world, isn’t simply a watery artery stretching nearly 1,000 miles across the length of the country — it’s a genuine lifeline, and one of the world’s earliest civilisations wouldn’t have started here without its life-giving properties.

Ancient Egypt’s major temples and cities were located along the Nile’s fertile banks, called Kemet (‘the black land’) by its inhabitants. The fact that the river flows from south to north was key to the Egyptians’ worldview, with its focus on the daily journey of the sun between the horizons. The desert fringes on the Nile’s west bank — symbolically associated with the land of the dead — are where you’ll find most of the country’s tombs and pyramids. The ancient Egyptian idea of paradise, the ‘Field of Reeds’, was but a heavenly version of the real-life abundance of greenery along the Nile. Today, some 95% of Egyptians still live within a few miles of the water.

This itinerary, following the Nile’s course upriver on a boat cruise, has been travelled since the days of the pharaohs, and it remains the most popular way to explore Egypt, hitting all of the country’s major historic sites. To escape the crowds, slow down — linger longer in Luxor, dig deeper in Cairo and relax in Aswan. Egypt hides many more treasures beyond the Pyramids of Giza and the Valley of the Kings for travellers who take the time to seek them out.

Highlights along the Nile Valley

1. Cairo Dive into Egypt’s chaotic capital. The Pyramids of Giza are the stars of the show, and the nearby Grand Egyptian Museum will be a blockbuster when it finally opens. For now, marvel at the 20 royal mummies at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization and find the gold death mask of Tutankhamun, housed in the Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square until the GEM is ready.

Tourists visiting Luxor temple

2. Luxor Take the train (around 10 hours, daytime or sleeper) to Luxor, built atop the ancient capital of Thebes. Big-hitters at this UNESCO site include the Luxor Temple and religious complex of Karnak, and the tombs of pharaohs in the Valley of the Kings outside town. Other nearby sites include the Ramesseum, whose giant statues inspired the poem ‘Ozymandias’, and the temple of the female pharaoh Hatshepsut.

3. Edfu Board a cruise boat in Luxor and spend the best part of the day sailing the Nile, with scenes of desert dunes and a shoreline punctuated with date palms unspooling outside your cabin. The standard first stop 70 miles upriver is Edfu, a tiny town with a well-preserved temple.

4. Kom Ombo The Nile crocodile takes centre stage at Kom Ombo, another 40 miles or around five hours’ sailing from Edfu. Half of the unique ‘double’ temple is dedicated to Sobek, the crocodile-headed god of pharaonic power and fertility, and an intriguing museum of mummified crocodiles awaits at the end of your visit.

5. Aswan All cruises dock at Aswan, after two nights on board en route from Luxor. The Nile is at its most fascinating here. Take a felucca (small sailboat) to Gharb Soheil, a brightly painted village home to a few thousand Nubians, an Indigenous group that has lived in the region since pharaonic times. For sunset, have a drink on the terrace of the Old Cataract Hotel , made famous by Agatha Christie, who wrote part of Death on the Nile here.

6. Abu Simbel Abu Simbel sits on the shore of Lake Nasser, created by the construction of the Aswan High Dam in 1970. The temples were rescued from rising waters by moving them stone by stone to higher ground. Twice a year, the sun still illuminates the figure of Ramses II and two of the three gods in the temple’s inner sanctum.

Itinerary 2: The Red Sea & Sinai

Start point: Sharm el-Sheikh End point: Nuweiba Distance travelled: 250 miles Average length: 7 days

Egypt’s best-known body of water is a river, but the Red Sea that stretches along the country’s eastern coast guarantees some thrilling aquatic adventures of its own. Suitable for all levels of underwater explorers, from snorkellers to advanced scuba divers, the Red Sea is a technicolour dream world beneath its surface. There are a huge number of endemic fish — including species of elegant highlighter-yellow butterflyfish, neon parrotfish and shy clownfish lingering in finger-like anemones — and thriving coral reefs.

Sprawling resorts have taken up much Red Sea real estate around Sharm el-Sheikh, but the development and crowds thin out as you travel north. Just a few miles inland from the coast, Sinai’s interior reaches for the sky, a sacred land of pilgrimage and revelations still lived in by long-established Bedouin tribes. Hiking trails climb to mountain summits and wind through valleys carved with centuries of graffiti left by visitors from the Nabataeans (of Petra fame) to the Crusaders, leading to secret wild swimming pools and small waterfalls.

This itinerary hits Egypt’s superlative highs and lows — from the country’s loftiest peaks to its deepest dive sites — as it traces the eastern edge of Sinai and traverses the peninsula’s biblically connected mountains.

Highlights on the Red Sea and Sinai

1. Sharm el-Sheikh When you need a break from sun, sand and snorkelling, Sharm has a couple of worthy distractions. The Sharm el-Sheikh Museum — the only such collection on the peninsula — has a digestible assortment of artefacts that span Egypt’s history from the pharaohs to the Bedouin. At the heart of the Old Market, which, despite its name, is quite new, the Sahaba Mosque looks like it could have come from the drawing board of Gaudí, with spiralling brick columns and honeycombed minarets.

2. Ras Mohamed National Park At the southernmost tip of Sinai, Egypt’s first national park is blessed with incredible dive sites. Vertical reef walls have names that hint at the types of species scuba divers and snorkellers can see: Jackfish Alley, Eel Garden, Shark Observatory and Anemone City. Divers with advanced certifications can check the shockingly large concentration of shipwrecks and the contents that have spilled out on the sea floor. Sleep in a canvas tent on the beach within the park boundaries at Bedouin-owned Bedawi Eco Camping .

trip from india to egypt

3. Dahab A chilled hangout spot for a curious mix of nomadic types — of both the digital and Bedouin varieties — Dahab is Egypt’s most laid-back destination. Whitewashed cafes draped with colourful Bedouin-style rugs line the crescent-shaped bays, where flippered snorkellers waddle past remote workers clacking away on laptops. North of town, the Blue Hole is infamous for its underwater tunnel, the Arch, which has seen a number of fatalities over the years; it is a safe and popular spot for responsible snorkelling and diving outside of that.

4. St Catherine Sacred to Christians, Jews and Muslims, the UNESCO-listed area around St Catherine’s contains the world’s oldest continuously lived-in Christian monastery, watched over by majestic mountains that are some of the tallest in the country. No matter your religious beliefs, join a night-time pilgrimage, arriving to witness sunrise from the summit of   Mt Sinai , or Jebel Musa (Mt Moses) in Arabic. Add on a day or more to walk with the local Jebeliya Bedouin through the neighbouring valleys that few outside visitors make time to see.

5. Nuweiba A small town with a laidback vibe and quiet golden beaches, one of Nuweiba’s main attractions is Dar Jan . A passion project by a couple who left the big smoke of Cairo, the nine-acre organic farm north of town is unlike elsewhere on the peninsula. Travellers can join creative workshops, including organic agriculture and outdoor survival skills, and spend artsy afternoons of pottery, meditation and mosaic-making. You can stay overnight, too.

The Ultimate Guide to Egypt: Dos and Don’ts Every Traveler Must Know!

W aving hello from the land of the Pharaohs , it's Kevin Erickson , your trusty travel companion. Ever dreamed of marveling at the Sphinx , floating on the Nile , or relishing in the historic hustle and bustle of Cairo's streets? Ah, Egypt, a majestic place! But, wait – do you know the etiquettes and local customs? Dive in as I unravel the treasures of Egypt and help you navigate potential pitfalls. 🌍

  • Dress modestly and respect religious practices
  • Greet, haggle, and tip like an Egyptian pro
  • Stay hydrated, savor local delicacies, but know where to draw the line
  • Relish history but respect boundaries
  • Dive deep into the culture but keep American sensibilities in mind

Why Egypt Should Be on Every Traveler's Bucket List

According to the World Tourism Organization, Egypt welcomed a staggering more than 11.3 million tourists in 2018. A beacon of history, culture, and cuisine, Egypt promises a travel experience like no other.

Cultural Nuances: Navigating Egypt's Rich Tapestry

1. dress to respect.

Egypt's culture is an intriguing mix of modern and traditional elements. In religious and rural areas, dressing modestly is the key.

Women, consider long skirts or pants and tops with sleeves, while men might ditch the shorts.

Remember, dressing appropriately is not just about blending in, it's about showing respect!

2. Communicate Like a Local

Starting with a warm " As-salamu alaykum" can break many barriers. It’s an essential phrase that means "Peace be upon you".

Plus, trust me; locals appreciate it when you put in the effort.

3. Fun with Finances: Haggle and Tip!

Haggling isn't just a transaction; it's an art form in Egypt .

Dive into the vibrant bazaars, start with half the price, and let the dance begin! And when it comes to tipping, small gestures can bring big smiles.

4. Food, Drinks, and the Egyptian Way

Egypt offers a culinary journey that your tastebuds will cherish.

From falafels to koshary, there's a world to explore. And here’s a zinger for my American friends: while Egypt is a Muslim-majority country, alcohol is indeed legal and available in many restaurants, hotels, and bars.

However, remember: public drunkenness isn't just frowned upon—it can land you in hot water!

5. Dive Deep into the History, but Respect the Boundaries

Egypt is, as Anthony Bourdain rightly said,

" a unique fusion of civilizations, cultures, and religions. Traveling here is like walking through layers of history."

But remember, while the Pyramids might tempt you, climbing them is a big no-no. Let's keep history preserved!

From a Traveler's Eye: Kevin's Secret Tips

  • The Nile - More Than Just a River - The Nile isn't just about those mesmerizing boat rides. Avoid swimming, especially near urban areas, due to pollution.
  • Not Everyone's After Your Bucks - Sure, there are hustlers, but many Egyptians are genuinely warm. Embrace the culture, make friends, and you'll discover the true heart of the country.
  • Step Outside the Tourist Spots - Discover Egypt's hidden gems. Beyond the Pyramids and Sphinx, there’s a whole world awaiting.

Embracing the Egyptian Adventure: A Final Word

The magic of Egypt is something that has enticed travelers for generations. Whether it's the mysterious allure of the Pyramids, the sprawling beauty of the Nile , or the vibrant tapestries of the bazaars, every corner of Egypt is a testament to its rich heritage and captivating culture. But beyond the visual spectacle, the soul of Egypt lies in its people – warm, welcoming, and eager to share their stories.

Traveling here is not just about checking off sites from a bucket list; it's about immersing oneself in a timeless narrative that has shaped much of the world's history. It's about understanding the delicate balance of tradition and modernity that Egyptians navigate daily. By respecting local customs and approaching each experience with an open heart, travelers can forge connections that transcend mere tourism.

Kevin Erickson' s insights and tips are crafted from a place of deep respect and admiration for this land. While the dos and don'ts serve as a practical guide, they also underscore a more profound message: Travel with empathy. Every "do" is an invitation to embrace and every "don't" a nudge to respect boundaries.

In conclusion, as you set out to experience Egypt, remember that it's a journey both external and internal. The monuments will leave you awestruck, the cuisine satisfied, but it's the memories made and the friendships forged that will truly stand the test of time.

So here's to Egypt – an eternal story waiting for your chapter. Safe travels!

What currency should I carry in Egypt?

Egypt uses the Egyptian Pound (EGP). While major cities and tourist areas accept credit cards, it's wise to carry some local currency for smaller vendors, tipping, and haggling in bazaars.

Do I need any vaccinations before traveling to Egypt?

It's recommended to consult with your healthcare provider before your trip. Common vaccines suggested for Egypt include Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and Yellow Fever, especially if you're planning to visit rural areas.

Is English spoken widely in Egypt?

While Arabic is the official language, English is widely understood and spoken, especially in tourist areas, major cities, and by younger generations. However, it's always appreciated if you learn a few basic Arabic phrases.

Are there specific cultural or religious festivals I should be aware of?

Yes, Egypt has several religious and cultural festivals, the most notable being Ramadan, a month of fasting. During this time, many shops and restaurants may have altered hours. Eid Al-Fitr and Eid Al-Adha are also significant festivals with grand celebrations.

Is vegetarian or vegan food easily available?

Yes, Egyptian cuisine offers a variety of vegetarian and even vegan-friendly dishes. Staples like falafel, koshary, and molokhia are both delicious and vegetarian-friendly.

How do I get around within the country?

Egypt boasts a range of transportation options from trains, buses, and domestic flights to more local means like tuk-tuks and horse-drawn carriages. For major attractions like the Pyramids, it's often convenient to hire a taxi for the day or join a guided tour.

Is the tap water safe to drink?

It's advisable to stick to bottled water in Egypt, both for drinking and brushing your teeth, to avoid any potential stomach upsets. Always ensure the bottle seal is intact when purchasing.

Egypt and Saudi Arabia have once again asserted their dominance as the top global destinations for international travel among MENA travellers in 2024, retaining their respective number one and two positions.

India held steady as the third most preferred destination for Middle Eastern travellers.

Top source markets

Egypt and India are both major source markets for foreign talent and labour for the Gulf region and have consistently held the top spots for international air travel. Going as far back as 2014, Egypt has consistently either come in at number one or two, with India invariably taking the third spot since 2016, Wego revealed.

While the top positions remained relatively stable, there were notable movements within the top 10 and beyond. Pakistan notably gained traction, climbing two spots in the rankings.

Additionally, Russia experienced a significant jump of nine spots globally, signaling its growing appeal among Middle Eastern travellers.

Popular regional rivalries

In the Middle East , Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE maintained their positions at the top, with Pakistan making a notable advancement to the fourth spot.

Qatar and Oman also saw gains, reflecting ongoing shifts in regional travel preferences.

Commenting on the trends, Mamoun Hmedan, chief business officer at Wego, said: “We are excited to see Egypt emerge as the leading destination for travellers in the MENA region during Q1 2024.

“According to Wego’s data, Egypt stands out as a favored choice among travelers seeking unique cultural experiences and diverse attractions. Meanwhile, the UK retains its position as the preferred European destination for Middle Eastern travellers.”

European destinations that lead the list

The UK continues to reign as the dominant European destination for Middle East travellers, with Italy rapidly gaining ground and securing the second position.

Italy, among the most popular tourist countries in the world, has continuously been among the top ten European destinations for Middle East travellers, 2024 is the first year that the reached the top three, coming in at number two.

While Eastern European countries such as Azerbaijan and Georgia experienced slight declines in popularity, larger Western European markets saw gains, indicating a broader trend of European destinations reclaiming traction.

Asian destinations that are popular choices

Thailand maintained its position as the top Asia Pacific destination for MENA travellers, solidifying its lead over Indonesia.

Vietnam made a notable advancement, overtaking South Korea in the rankings.

A recurring trend from 2023 persisted in 2024, with closer, regional destinations gaining favor over more distant ones.

Countries such as Morocco, Indonesia, and the US experienced declines in rankings, while regional destinations like Kuwait, Pakistan, and Jordan continued to ascend.

In 2024, Qatar broke into top 10 for the first time taking the place of Morocco which dropped two notches down to number 12.
