Buckle Up and Check Out the Cast of Road Trip Then and Now

It's been 20 years since four college kids piled into the car and embarked on a tour of debauchery for a ridiculous cause in todd phillips' feature directorial debut.

How do we top Jason Biggs doing it with a pie...?

Such was surely the question on countless filmmakers' lips after the box office success of  American Pie , which spurred the urge to fill theaters with debauched hi-jinks that young gentlemen especially would find funny.

Todd Phillips  perfected that formula over the course of the 00s, and he started with 2000's  Road Trip , a raunchy gross-out fest cranked up to 11 about a fairly normal college student played by Breckin Meyer who hits the road to intercept a sex tape of him and a one-night stand that was accidentally mailed to his girlfriend, played by Rachel Blanchard , who's at another school. And of course he wouldn't embark on such an important mission alone...

Sex is had between expected and unexpected partners, a prostate is probed, French toast gets a dusting of flop sweat, a mouse is molested by Tom Green . Phillips, who also wrote the story with Scot Armstrong , packed it all in, and even borrowed Stifler from what would soon be a whole  American Pie  franchise for the ride.

"I find the term 'gross-out comedy' sort of dismissive," Phillips, ready to go to bat for whatever he was working on since the beginning, told the BBC in 2000. "It's very easy to be gross, it's very hard to be funny. I think why Road Trip  works is not because of the gross stuff, it's because of the characters."

And since 20 years is a bit of time, definitely enough time for a few twists and turns on everybody's journey, let's get a load of what these miscreants all looked like then vs. now:

After standing out as Travis Birkenstock in  Clueless  and scoring supporting roles in  The Craft ,  Go and  The Insider , Meyer moved into the starring position in  Road Trip as Josh—a cheater (it all works out in the end) but the relatively nice, normal one of the bunch. Next up was the ensemble comedy  Rat Race  and he's the voice of Jon in the  Garfield movies with Bill Murray as the lazy, lasagna-loving cat. A regular in movies and TV, Meyer also starred in the legal dramedy  Franklin & Bash with Mark-Paul Gosselaar  and more recently appeared in Designated Survivor  and  The Fix .

He has two daughters with ex-wife Deborah Kaplan (who directed him in 2001's  Josie and the Pussycats ) and since 2017 he's been in a relationship with  The Bold and the Beautiful  actress Linsey Gofrey after they met on a dating app for people in the industry.

"I always tell him all the time, I'm like, 'I had the biggest crush on you when I was growing up. I loved Travis from Clueless,'"  Godfrey told  Soap Opera Digest   in December 2018. "And I loved him in Road Trip and all that kind of stuff. He thinks that's really funny and I think it's really funny. He was adorable and we both have big crushes on each other. He's the best!"

He had just played Stiffler in  American Pie and would have three more turns as the unhinged but well-meaning party animal down the road, but first—Josh's best friend, the mildly unhinged but well-meaning party animal E.L., in  Road Trip .

Scott dove into his subsequent type-casting with relish, starring in the bromance classic  Dude, Where's My Car?  with Ashton Kutcher and  Final Destination  (both of which also came out in 2000),  The Dukes of Hazzard ,  Mr. Woodcock and  Role Models . He also turned up in  Old School  and  Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back and  provided the voice of Crash in four  Ice Age films. He has also starred in a number of small films, including the ensemble sci-fi thriller-comedy  Southland Tales (audiences didn't really get it either) and the Courteney Cox-directed  Just Before I Go .

He actually hasn't done much TV (his movies have quietly grossed almost $5 billion collectively in the meantime), but in 2018 was cast in Fox's  Lethal Weapon to replace the fired Clayne Crawford as the resident live wire, but the buddy-cop dramedy was canceled at the end of its third season.

Having maintained an impressively private personal life for two decades, Williams married interior designer  Olivia Korenberg  in September 2019.

Beth turned out to be the girl for Josh in the end, never mind the shady cinematic start to their relationship.

After  Road Trip , which was preceded by modeling, starring in  Varsity Blues  and playing Ruby on  Felicity , Smart reunited with Breckin Meyer in  Rat Race and co-starred in  The Butterfly Effect with Ashton Kutcher . She has appeared in a slew of films, including  Win a Date With Tad Hamilton , Starsky & Hutch ,  The Best Man ,  Just Friends (as the object of Ryan Reynolds ' long-suffering affection),  The Town and the holiday ABC Family classic  12 Dates of Christmas . Later TV work has included  Maron ,  Law & Order: SVU ,  MacGyver  and the new DC Universe web series  Stargirl with Luke Wilson , which just premiered May 18, 2020.

Smart married HGTV star Carter Oosterhouse in 2011 and they welcomed daughter Flora via surrogate in 2016.

Josh's smart-ass pal Rubin is the reason this road trip was possible, as he's the one who sent the wrong tape (Josh had also been recording innocent video messages in the era before FaceTime and Snapchat) to Josh's girlfriend, Tiffany.

Costanzo went on to co-star in 40 Days and 40 Nights with Josh Hartnett and then landed the technically plum role of Joey 's nephew Michael Tribbiani in the ultimately short-lived  Friends  spin-off. A steadier gig came as a star of the USA dramedy  Royal Pains for eight seasons, after which he had a pivotal role in the HBO series  The Night Of and joined the cast of  Designated Survivor  in season two.

Green's bum isn't on the road trip, but his character—Barry Manilow—serves as narrator and school bard. 2000 was an eventful year for the host of  The Tom Green Show— he chronicled his successful treatment for testicular cancer on his popular MTV show, and then appeared as The Chad in  Charlie's Angels  alongside then-girlfriend Drew Barrymore , whom he was married to for eight months in 2001 before filing for divorce that December.

After  Road Trip , his biggest movie was 2001's  Freddy Got Fingered , but he has written and produced and appeared in all sorts of productions over the years (including Tom Green's House Tonight , an ahead-of-his-time talk show he filmed in his living room, and Tom Green Live ), as well as done cameos and a lot of voice work.

The meek and scrawny Kyle was a sight gag in and of himself, but though he had some lows (eating adulterated French toast being the most memorable), he also ended up with Rhonda's leopard-print underpants as a souvenir from the best night of his life to date.

After  Road Trip , his movie debut, Qualls starred in his own bro comedy, 2002's  The New Guy , but is mainly known for supporting appearances in the likes of Hustle & Flow  and TV shows including  Lost ,  Criminal Minds ,  My Name Is Earl ,  The Big Bang Theory ,  Breaking Bad ,  Supernatural ,  Fargo and  The Man in the High Castle , on which he was a regular for three seasons. 

He also reprised the role of Kylie in 2009's direct-to-DVD sequel  Road Trip: Beer Pong .

After sharing with an audience that he was gay during one of his pal Jim Jeffries ' stand-up shows (in 2013 Qualls starred in  Legit , a sitcom co-created by Jeffries), Qualls took to Twitter in January 2020 to write , "It is 11:20pm. I just came out on stage at a @jimjefferies show in San Diego. Yep, I'm gay. Been gay this whole time. Tired of worrying about what people would think of me. Tired of worrying about what it would do to my career."

None of the aftermath of Rhonda's memorable sex scene, when Kyle's friends tease him, aged well, but Davis made a splash as the confident, sexy-as-hell girl Kyle loses his virginity to on the road. The model and actress went on to a career as a motivational speaker and style consultant before she died at 36 in 2011 from a pulmonary embolism following knee surgery. She was married to comedian Mike Yard from 2008 until her death.

Perfectly nice Tiffany remains none the wiser about Josh's unfaithful ways after the tape turns out  not to be what Josh thought it was, and they amicably split up.

Blanchard, the former child star ( The Kids of Degrassi Street , Are   You Afraid of the Dark? ) who played Cher when  Clueless was briefly a sitcom, has since worked alongside a slew of talented actors, but her most recognizable film since  Road Trip  is the instant-cult-classic  Snakes on a Plane . Up next, however, she's in Adrian Lyne 's thriller  Deep   Water , the film that brought co-stars Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas together off-camera, due out in November 2020.

Her TV work includes  7th Heaven ,  Peep Show ,  Psych ,  Fargo and Audience Network's  You Me Her , which has been renewed for a fifth and final season.

In 2014, Blanchard told ABC News that anything online saying she had a husband named Adrian Brown and two kids was a lie. "That's a rumor," she said. "I think I have an Internet stalker, who started that and then won't take it down. I keep having it taken down and he keeps putting it back up. But I don't have a husband, I don't have two kids."

She has since married composer Jeremy Turner and they have a daughter, Maxine.

The star of stage and screen who originated the role of Mark in  Rent  and Lucas in If/Then  on Broadway can play a chilling villain, see anti-Semite McGoo in  School Ties  and Josh, obsessive TA turned cult leader, in  Road Trip . He's appeared in numerous indie films over the years, as well as bigger fare such as  A Beautiful Mind  and the 2005 movie adaptation of  Rent , and his more recent TV work includes  Psych ,  The Knick ,  The Good Fight  and  13 Reasons Why . He currently stars on CBS All Access'  Star Trek: Discovery  as Lt. Commander Paul Stamets.

In 2017, Rapp changed the course of a lot of things when he said in an interview that Kevin Spacey had made a sexual advance toward him when he was 14 and Spacey was 26, which triggered a spiral of accusations  that resulted in Spacey being fired from  House of Cards . (Spacey said he didn't remember doing any such thing, but if he did so while drunk, he was deeply sorry.)

"I felt bad for the hundreds of people who were working on the show," Rapp said a year later, reflecting on how swiftly Spacey's career collapsed after he came forward. The actor told BuzzFeed he was "relieved" when  House of Cards returned for another season without Frank Underwood.

In November 2019, Rapp announced that he was engaged to his partner,  Ken Ithiphol .

The before-and-after of the prominent character actor never gets old. Suplee had already excelled at comedy (the only one who can't see the optical illusion in Mallrats ;   a high school bully's strongman in Boy Meets World ) and drama (as  Edward Norton 's racist lump of a friend in  American History X ) by the time he had a small role in Road Trip  as Ed. He was played a high school football player in  Remember the Titans in 2000 and went on to co-star in  My Name Is Earl  from 2005 to 2009. His film resume includes  The Butterfly Effect ,  Cold Mountain , Unstoppable ,  The Wolf of Wall Street ,  Deepwater Horizon and the Norton-directed  Motherless Brooklyn ,   and more recent TV work includes Hulu's  Chance , the new  Twin Peaks , and Netflix's  The Ranch  and  The Santa Clarita Diet .

He has four children with Brandy Lewis , his wife since 2006, and in January 2020—after almost a lifetime of yo-yo dieting and gaining and losing hundreds of pounds—he proudly revealed off his new muscled physique

The  News Radio  star and all-around quirky fellow had a brief cameo as an obviously strange motel clerk.

Amid several arrests over the years, some of them involving indecent exposure and groping other men, Dick has been open about struggling with substance abuse that has had him in and out of rehab. But despite the toxic behavior, he has stayed busy, having his own sketch show,  The Andy Dick Show , on MTV for a couple years; becoming a regular on the dais at celebrity roasts; releasing a few comedy albums; and doing a lot of cameos as an oddball in the likes of  Community , Maron ,  Workaholics and Netflix's  Sense8 . 

Dick has a son from his first marriage, to Ivone Kowalczyk, and a son and daughter with partner Lena Sved—who obtained a restraining order against Dick in 2018, claiming he had gotten belligerent in front of their son, who in turn locked his drunken father out of the house.

As "French Toast Guy," an otherwise unnamed diner cook, he amiably agreed to give Kyle a new plate of French toast  without powdered sugar, and proceeded to remove the sugar in every obscene way imaginable and serve it back to him.

Sanz had joined the cast of  Saturday Night Live  in 1998 and stayed until 2006, while also building a resume of small but standout comedic roles in the likes of  Boat Trip, School for Scoundrels, Lucky You, Step Brothers, Year One and Bachelorette. He's also the voice of Duncan in Wreck-It-Ralph and Ralph Breaks the Internet . His acting on TV has included  30 Rock ,  House of Lies ,  Parks and Recreation ,  Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt ,  Modern Family ,  Scorpion ,  GLOW  and  The Mandalorian .

In 2008 he revealed that he'd lost about 100 pounds, and later said on The Tonight Show that he'd been working out more and cut out alcohol.

Sanz is quiet about his persona life, but he married his wife Jenn in 2015.

A prolific improv comedian and star of  Mr. Show  and  The Larry Sanders Show  long before she became the unflappable IT wiz Chloe O'Brian on  24 , Rajskub had a quick turn in  Road Trip  as school bus dispatcher Blind Brenda whose intuition (and middle finger) works just fine.

Road Trip was just an early stop on the journey for Phillips, who got his start making documentaries ( Frat House put him on the map) and then went on to direct and/or write Old School ,  Starsky & Hutch ,  School for Scoundrels ,  The Hangover  (as well as  Part II  and  Part III ),  Due Date , War Dogs and  Joker . He also produced  A Star Is Born with longtime buddy Bradley Cooper, who in turn was a co-producer on  Joker , which was nominated for 11 Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director. Joaquin Phoenix won Best Actor (as well as every other major award), and  Hildur Guðnadóttir won for Best Original Score.

"I'm writing another comedy," Phillips told the BBC in 2000. "But don't worry, it's not a teen movie at all." Just adults who start a fraternity, that's all, and it's spectacular.

Road Trip made almost $120 million worldwide and put Phillips on the dude-comedy map—though, as he would be quick to point out, each of those dudes has a purpose.

What is it about the road trip that lends itself so well to cinema? Looking down the entries to the genre, some of our very favorite films of all time qualify as part of one of the oldest tropes in the movies, and today’s release of Todd Phillips’ “Due Date” confirms, if confirmation was needed, that the style is still alive and kicking.

It’s partly that the filmmaker gets to include as many cinematic locations as they can get their protagonists to visit, it’s partly that the nature of a chase, or a journey, is inherently filmic, and it’s partly that there are few better ways to create drama than sticking a group of characters together and forcing them to travel in the same direction.

In honor of Phillips’ movie (which as we’ll see, is dividing the staff here as much as it’s dividing critics around the world), we’ve picked over twenty of our favorite big-screen journeys. Not all are perfect, but all are worth adding to the Netflix queue.

Honorable Mentions: Ending on the note of “Bonnie and Clyde” highlights another major absence — “Badlands.” As much as we adore Terrence Malick’s debut, it’s been well-covered elsewhere, and we thought the space could be better used. “Easy Rider” is another one, and indeed, possibly the single most iconic road movie, which we simply didn’t have anything new to say about — Steven Spielberg’s “Duel” fits the same category. Otherwise, the Bob Hope/Bing Crosby “Road To…” series is occasionally entertaining, but fairly dated, while Preston Sturges’ “The Palm Beach Story” is wonderful, but comes off worse against “It Happened One Night.” Like “Two Lane Blacktop,” “Vanishing Point” is another pared-down chase flick not without its charms, while both Kathryn Bigelow’s “Near Dark” and Ruben Fleischer’s “Zombieland” are as much road trips as they are horror films.

“Faster ,Pussycat! Kill! Kill!” is one of Russ Meyer’s best exploitation flicks, while, albeit far more highbrow, Wim Wenders’ “Alice in the Cities,” the first in a trilogy of road movies, is also among its director’s best work. David Lynch’s “The Straight Story” is beautifully observed (and unusually matter-of-fact for the director), and perhaps the slowest road movie ever made. Unless we’re counting Gus Van Sant’s “Gerry,” of course. Van Sant is something of a road trip connoisseur, his best being “My Own Private Idaho.”

Comedy wise, “National Lampoon’s Vacation” is fairly definitive, with Chevy Chase rarely on better form, while “Little Miss Sunshine,” despite becoming a derisive byword for a certain kind of big name indie flick, remains a wonderful little film. We’d be remiss if we didn’t mention “The Cannonball Run” and “Smokey and the Bandit,” which were huge successes in the 70s, even if they are both terrible. But the film that probably got closest to inclusion? “Apocalypse Now,” as much a travelogue as it is a war movie.

Time to gather up the raunchy teen humor of 'American Pie', and hit the road for this charming, punchy, but disposable comedy.

"Take your situation for example: it's not cheating. It's never cheating when you're in a different area code, not to mention a different state ... That makes no sense."

I had nearly forgotten about this little college sex comedy that I did check out numerous times during my early High School years. As a whole, Road Trip is one of those typical teen movies that you would randomly go see with a bunch of friends for some laughs. Parents need to know that The Trip is a hilarious feature-length movie made from a British six-part comedy-drama TV series about two friends who travel around northern England reviewing restaurants. Directed by Michael Winterbottom , it has the two lead characters, Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon , improvising passive-aggressive fictional versions of themselves. The two are continually locked in a battle of one-upmanship as they try to outdo each other with impersonations and argue about their careers and behavior. Coogan's character is an insecure, jealous womanizer, who smokes a joint during the movie and has sex with multiple women -- although this is suggested rather than seen. A female companion of Coogan's takes cocaine, and it's assumed he does, too. Brydon is more likable, portrayed as a family man, albeit with a big, but fragile, ego. Much of the jokes and impersonations feature strong language, including "c--t" and variants of "f--k." There is a "joke" about Coogan having been an alter boy and whether he was abused or not. The restaurant scenes also involve drinking alcohol, and there is some cigarette smoking. The Trip is the first in a series of movies. What's the Story?

In THE TRIP, a fictionalized version of the actor Steve Coogan is sent by a newspaper on a week-long tour of high-end restaurants in the north of England. When his girlfriend drops out, he asks his friend, Rob Brydon , to go with him. But as the pair spend more time together, their egos clash.

Is It Any Good?

This comedy-drama is a deceptively deep and downbeat character study. Originally aired in the U.K. as a six-part TV series, The Trip is best known for the YouTube clips of Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon battling over dinner to see who can do the best celebrity impersonations. But there's far more to this feature-length movie than who does the best Michael Caine . Coogan and Brydon have both done excellent work with director Michael Winterbottom before ( 24 Hour Party People , A Cock and Bull Story ) and here, between the bombast of the impersonations, the director draws out of them superb performances portraying actors desperately driven by ego.

Based on real-life tabloid reports of his life, Coogan's character comes out worst: a self-centered, jealous womanizer for whom nothing appears to be enough. The movie's masterstroke is how this character is relatively loathsome but still carries pathos. Set against the beautifully shot but bleak landscape of northern England, it has an undercurrent of melancholia that makes the end of the week-long trip feel almost a relief. But the journey is entirely worth it to see such subtle but pitch-perfect performances that linger long after the movie ends.

After some movies, Gene Siskel liked to say, "I wish I'd seen a documentary about the same actors having lunch." A whimsical new movie named "The Trip" puts his theory to the test. We've seen Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon co-starring in " Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story " (2005), and now here they are having lunch.

The pretense is that the Observer newspaper has assigned Coogan to do an article about dining in the north of England. His qualifications seem to be that he was born in Manchester, and he eats. When his girlfriend begs off the tour, he recruits his old friend Brydon to drive along, magnanimously offering to give him 45 percent of the fee. Brydon bids farewell to his wife and child, and the two set off in Coogan's Land Rover under gray winter skies.

The film, directed by Michael Winterbottom , consists of (1) Coogan and Brydon talking in the car; (2) Coogan and Brydon talking at breakfast, lunch and dinner; (3) Coogan's luck at seducing hotel staff members; (4) Coogan standing alone in chilly but lovely landscapes trying to find a signal for his cell phone; (5) food being prepared and served, and (6) shots of the car on motorways and country lanes.

This is a great deal more entertaining than it sounds, in large part because the two actors are gifted mimics — Brydon the better one, although Coogan doesn't think so. They get into a sort of competition that allows them to compete with their versions of such as Michael Caine , Ian McKellen , Sean Connery , Woody Allen and others. Brydon does a virtuoso impression of Caine's voice evolving from his early days in "The Ipcress File" through decades of whiskey and cigars into its present richness.

There's an undercurrent of rivalry throughout, based on what Coogan sees as his greater fame, success and talent. What especially bugs him is that he's seen as a comic actor and denied a shot at the heavy duty A-list material he feels he deserves. He also sees himself as more handsome, fitter and successful than Brydon, and from the way he considers his hair in a mirror you'd think he wanted it to look that way.

Curiously, they give only perfunctory attention to the many meals they eat, although Winterbottom faithfully goes into the kitchens to show each one being prepared. Scallops are featured in at least half the meals. One breakfast centers on black pudding, which I believe is best eaten with the eyes closed.

Along the way, they visit Lake District sites associated with Wordsworth and Coleridge, quote copiously, and speculate on Coleridge's use of opium. Coogan's reaction shot is priceless when one woman recognizes Brydon but not him. There's an undercurrent: Brydon has a family to return to in a cozy home; Coogan has a son he's distant from and a barren, modern apartment.

It's a good question how true any of this is. The movie lists no screenwriters, but although it looks like a documentary, it isn't one. Apparently it was edited down from a longer BBC-TV series during which the food was possibly more discussed. At the end we're left with the intriguing question: Would we rather see the same two actors in a regular story?

"Deadpool and Wolverine" is set to be one of the biggest films of the summer, and fan theories are already flying around the internet regarding what Marvel could have in store for what looks like a bonkers trip across a multiverse populated by characters previously owned by 20th Century Fox and now owned by Disney. Whatever goes down in the sequel, starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, prior knowledge of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will not be a mandatory requirement in order to enjoy it. That's according to the film's director, Shawn Levy.

"I was a good student in school. I'll do my homework as an adult. But I am definitely not looking to do homework when I go to the movies," Levy recently told the Associated Press . "I very much made this film with certainly a healthy respect and gratitude towards the rabid fan base that has peak fluency in the mythology and lore of these characters and this world. But I didn't want to presume that. This movie is built for entertainment, with no obligation to come prepared with prior research."

While Hugh Jackman is playing Wolverine, it's not the same Wolverine he played on screen for more than a decade. That Wolverine was killed in "Logan," and Jackman assured fans when he joined the next "Deadpool" movie that his reprising of the X-Men character would not screw with the events of the beloved 2017 movie. The latest "Deadpool and Wolverine" trailer confirmed Jackman is playing a Wolverine who comes from a world that he nearly destroyed.

While the upcoming Marvel tentpole is the third movie headlined by Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool, Levy has been adamant in press interviews that his movie is not really a "Deadpool 3" as the press and fans have often called it.

"As far as crafting the ‘Deadpool and Wolverine' story, I just felt privileged every day because you're talking about two massive movie stars in their most iconic roles," Levy told  Screen Rant  during CinemaCon earlier this month. "It also gave me an opportunity. It's the third Deadpool movie, but it's not ‘Deadpool 3.' It's a different thing that's very much Deadpool and Wolverine. And it's not trying to copycat anything from the first two movies. They were awesome, but this is a two-hander character adventure."

Levy described his movie as "gnarly" and "funny" and said that early test screenings for the film "were extremely, extremely promising."

"I wouldn't say that there were any big surprises, but you feel where the pace wants to tighten, you feel where you can afford to slow down and have a deeper, more durable character moment," he added.

"Deadpool and Wolverine" hits theaters on July 26 from Disney.

Demon Slayer season 4 release date confirmed

The Demon Slayer season 4 release date is May 12, 2024 . It will be streaming exclusively on Crunchyroll.

We can expect new Demon Slayer episodes to premiere weekly on Sundays moving forward.

A movie, titled 'To the Hashira Training', dropped in February 2024 in the US and UK for a limited time only. It gave fans a chance to see the first episode a few months early, bringing together Demon Slayer season 4's opening episode as well as the season 3 (Swordsmith Village) finale in one big-screen package.

To the Hashira Training: is Demon Slayer season 4 a movie?

Demon Slayer season 4 is not a movie . Instead, this 'To the Hashira Training' release follows the same path as the Swordsmith Village arc: the first episode of season 4 was bundled in with the finale of the previous season as a preview movie-of-sorts.

Titled To the Hashira Training, the new Demon Slayer 'movie' (we hesitate to call it a full feature-length adventure) specifically combines Swordsmith Village arc episode 11 with Demon Slayer season 4, episode 1.

That got a limited release in February and is now out of cinemas. Demon Slayer season 4, including an hour-long first episode, will release this May.

Demon Slayer season 4 story: which manga chapters is it adapting?

Demon Slayer season 4 will follow on from the end of the Swordsmith Village arc (chapters 98-127 of the manga) by adapting the Hashira Training arc (chapters 128-136) . If you’re following on in the bundled editions, that’s the latter half of Volume 15 and the first three chapters in Volume 16.

No spoilers here, but the source material does give us a taste of what to expect.

The book synopsis reads: "Tanjiro goes to see the Stone Hashira, Himejima, who intends to prepare him for the battles to come. The training to become a Hashira – a high-ranking member of the Demon Slayer Corps – is intense and demanding, and earning Himejima’s approval seems impossible, but Tanjiro won’t give up!"

In straightforward terms, expect Tanjiro to harness more of his powers with the help of various Hashira. The Stone Hashira, Water Hashira, Insect Hashira, Wind Hashira, and Snake Hashira have already been confirmed for the Hashira Training arc, with the 'To the Hashira Training' outlining the group's plans to train the Demon Slayer Corps with a series of well-honed regimens that cater to each Hashira's style.

The upcoming season should also revolve around the emergence of Nezuko’s new powers, namely that she can ‘conquer the sun’ and exist as a demon in the daylight. Series antagonist Muzan Kibutsuji, as shown in the Swordsmith Village finale, is aware of those developments and will be hot on her tail.

Looking further ahead, it also appears to be the last step before the very final anime storyline, dubbed the Final Battle/Infinity Castle arc.

Demon Slayer season 4 cast

Tanjiro (Natsuki Hanae), Zenitsu (Hiro Shimono), Inosuke (Yoshitsugu Matsuoka), and Nezuko (Akari Kitou) will all return to the Demon Slayer season 4 cast in the Hashira Training arc. 

The Water Hashira Giyu Tomioka (Takahiro Sakurai), Serpent Hashira Obanai Iguro (Kenichi Suzumura), Insect Hashira Shinobu Kocho (Saori Hayami), Wind Hashira Sanemi Shinazugawa (Tomokazu Seki), Mist Hashira (Kengo Kawanshi), Love Hashira (Kana Hanazawa) and Stone Hashira Gyomei Himejima (Tomokazu Sugita) will each be a major presence as Tanjiro begins his training. The former Sound Hashira Tengen Uzui (Katsuyuki Konishi) will also return.

Demon Slayer season 4 trailer: new Hashira Training teaser

The most recent trailer for the Hashira Training season was released in March . While it only features footage from the first episode of the upcoming season, it does tease the upcoming arc. The Hashira will guide Tanjiro through to potentially being a Hashira-in-waiting, and they will train the next generation of Demon Slayer Corps against the surviving Twelve Kizuki/Upper Moons.

The first Demon Slayer season 4 trailer featured a quick recap of the arcs covered so far, plus the confirmed clutch of characters in the new arc. You can also see the new poster below, which highlights the Hashira involved in the titular training.

Demon Slayer season 4 episode count: how many episodes are in the Hashira Training arc?

The first season of Demon Slayer consisted of 26 episodes – but episode counts have been dwindling since then. The Mugen Train and Entertainment District arcs were seven and 11 episodes respectively, while Swordsmith Village was also 11 episodes.

Hashira Training, however, only has a small amount of source material to draw from. Without some serious padding, it’s unlikely to stack up to even Mugen Train’s truncated seven-episode run. While it’s been confirmed as a full season, we wouldn’t be surprised for it to be a short pit stop on the way to bigger things – a six-episode season (tops) would be our guess. But even something as short as two or three episodes could be realistic, especially given the one-hour premiere.
