Martha Is Inviting Guests to Her Home for a Thanksgiving-Inspired Retreat—Here's How to Attend

The experience includes a tour of the 150-acre property, as well as brunch with Martha herself.

Madeline Buiano is an associate editor at MarthaStewart.com, sharing her knowledge on a range of topics—from gardening and cleaning to home and pets. She has five years of writing and editing experience in the digital publishing industry.

Few people celebrate Thanksgiving like Martha. Every year, our founder typically cooks at least three turkeys, bakes a table's worth of decadent pies , and hosts 30 to 40 of her closest friends and family. This year, you may be able to experience what turkey day is like at Martha's home—she partnered with Booking.com to give two guests a Thanksgiving-inspired stay on her farm in Bedford, N.Y.

The getaway, which takes place from Saturday, November 18 to Sunday, November 19, features an itinerary curated by Martha herself to include some of her favorite fall activities . “Thanksgiving has always been one of my favorite holidays to celebrate, which is why I’m excited to be Booking.com’s newest host and welcome guests to my Bedford farm for a Thanksgiving-inspired stay ahead of the big day,” Martha said in a press release.

Booking.com

Guests will begin their stay with a welcome tour of Tenant House, a cozy cottage on Martha's property where her guests will enjoy their overnight stay. As an opportunity to experience more of the 150-acre property, guests will receive a guided tour of the farm with Martha's head gardener, Ryan McCallister. During the tour, guests will see Martha's chicken coop, gardens, and stables.

Of course, it wouldn't be a stay at Martha's without a delicious meal. During the two-day retreat, both guests will enjoy a brunch with Martha herself, prepared by James Beard Award-Winning Chef Thomas Joseph.

Martha will also help her visitors get ready for their own Thanksgiving celebrations. Kevin Sharkey, executive director of design, will give guests a table setting and wreath-making demonstration with his tips for how to make your Thanksgiving special.

“Every year, my Thanksgiving holiday prep begins weeks before hosting my family in Bedford, so I can’t wait to welcome the guests that book this experience to my fall-ready Tenant House on the farm and look forward to sharing my favorite Thanksgiving-inspired traditions during their stay.”

Martha Stewart's Thanksgiving-Inspired farm stay will become bookable through Booking.com on a first-come, first served basis on November 16 at 12:00 p.m. EST.

Turkey Farm Tours for the Family

Related to:.

You don't need to be a Pilgrim to know that turkey is a Thanksgiving favorite. For months leading up to the holiday, many turkey farmers open their farms to visitors. Most visits are designed for little ones; kids can watch the birds, learn about them and (at least in one case) pet them. All farms sell turkeys, too. Here are five of our favorite turkey farms worth investigating.

turkey farm tour

Claude Moore Colonial Farm (McLean, Va.)

Visiting this McLean, Virginia, farm is like stepping back in time -- to the 1700s, to be exact. The place replicates a pre-Revolutionary War farm, complete with workers dressed in period garb and "heritage livestock" descended from animals found in Virginia at the turn of the 18th century. Turkey species on site include Bronzeback and Spanish Black; they are for show only (meaning none are killed and cooked). Until October, visiting children take the turkeys out into the tobacco fields so the animals can eat worms that would otherwise ruin crops. Throughout the year, the farm also hosts "market fairs," which feature costumed vendors, artisans and entertainers.

Misty Knoll Farms (New Haven, Vt.)

One of the largest turkey operations in New England, this family-owned New Haven, Vermont, farm sells roughly 20,000 turkeys a year, and has its own U.S. Department of Agriculture inspector on site. The selling point of the farm is that it's "free-range," meaning that turkeys spend time in large barns, pens or pastures and are free to cluck and waddle wherever they see fit. The farm is open to visitors between May and December, and guests are encouraged to peek through the wire fence and watch the birds as they wander. There's also a small store where guests can buy everything from fresh (processed) birds to frozen and ready-to-cook turkey pot pies.

Bechard Family Farm (Conway, Mo.)

While this 11-year-old farm off the I-44 in Conway, Missouri, offers turkeys between July and late November, they are only one of five pasture-raised animals here (the others are chickens, cows, sheep and pigs). Visitors can watch farmed turkeys run around for hours; they can also pet and interact with Jack, the farm's mild-mannered "pet" turkey. Bechard's also boasts a modest store that sells birds fresh off the processing line (as well as other meats, jams and amazing homemade soaps). Because the farm processes turkeys on set days, if you're interested in buying, it's usually a good idea to call ahead before stopping by. The farm is closed on Sundays.

Diestel Family Turkey Ranch (Sonora, Calif.)

Tucked away in the Sierra foothills near Sonora, California, the Diestel Family Ranch has been raising turkeys for nearly 90 years. The farm squawks to life in early spring, and is buzzing with birds until December of every year. Visitors flock to the farm to lunch at picnic tables overlooking the turkey paddock; the area is a great vantage point to watch the animals as they (quite literally) strut their stuff. Afterward, be sure to visit the on-site store, where sale items include frozen turkeys, fresh turkeys (in November), turkey burgers, turkey sausages and sliced turkey meat. The farm is only open to the public Monday-Friday so plan ahead.

Springfield Farm (Sparks, Md.)

This family farm in Sparks, Maryland, specializes in chicken eggs, but sells other fowl seasonally, as well. Between May and November, this means the place is crawling with turkeys. On slower days (always call first), owners David and Lilly Smith let guests interact with certain birds (under supervision, of course). Usually this involves wandering into a pasture and letting curious turkeys come over to check folks out. In the spring, when new turkeys hatch, the Smiths also take visitors on impromptu tours of the incubator room. For Thanksgiving, the farm raises special Narragansett turkeys, a heritage breed. Come November, fresh specimens are available for purchase at the on-site store.

Turkey Farm Videos

In this 360 tour and other videos, you’ll tour a working Canadian turkey farm and meet the farm family. They’ll explain how they raise and care for their birds.

turkey farm tour

FarmFood360° – Virtual Reality Turkey Farm Tour

In this 360° video tour, you’ll get to see inside a working Canadian turkey farm and learn all about how turkeys are cared for, what they eat, where they live, and how Canadian turkey farmers care for their birds. You’ll see birds of different ages in two different types of barns and learn about the biosecurity and animal care protocols they follow.

turkey farm tour

What Turkeys Eat

Turkeys on Canadian turkey farms eat different diets (called rations) of food depending on their ages. In this video, you’ll learn about their diet of mixed grains, minerals and nutrients. They’ll also explain when a farmer might need to use antibiotics and about food safety protocols and withdrawal periods if birds do need medication. And, they’ll proudly attest to the fact that no Canadian turkeys are ever given added hormones. Did you know that’s actually been illegal for more than 50 years.

Life of a Turkey Farm Family

Meet Kathryn, Clair and their four daughters Carmyn, Sophia, Charlotte and Adele and hear about their farm family, life on their Canadian turkey farm, and the ways that the girls help their parents with chores.

Caring for Turkeys

In this video, Canadian turkey farmers Kathryn and Clair talk about the level of care and attention that goes into raising their flocks of turkeys. From housing to ventilation, biosecurity and nutrition, you’ll learn about it all here.

turkey farm tour

How Turkeys grow

A male turkey is called a Tom; a female turkey is called a Hen and young turkeys are called poults. On this Canadian family farm, they raise “Toms” which are used for further processing markets for some of the many turkey items you can find in your grocery store like ground turkey, turkey roll or turkey breast . This video will show what turkey barns look like and how birds are cared for at different ages of production. You’ll also learn about how important lighting, water systems, temperature and air flow are for the birds’ environment.

Quick Facts:

  • Turkeys are grown year round in Canada. In total, there are about 520 turkey farmers across the country.
  • Turkeys raised for meat always roam freely around the barn. They’re housed in modern barns where temperature, humidity, light, and ventilation are carefully monitored to ensure that the birds stay healthy.
  • Turkey barns are designed to provide birds with ample room to move about with easy access to water and feed. Most barns are insulated to help maintain a constant temperature.
  • Turkeys are kept in barns where they are free to roam on floors covered with soft bedding materials.
  • No growth hormones are used in turkey production in Canada. In fact, they are illegal and have been for many years.
  • Water and pelleted feeds made of grains such as wheat, corn and soybeans (similar in appearance to hamster food) are always available, so the birds can help themselves any time they want.
  • Most turkey farmers put all their new birds into the barn at the same time. This makes sense from both a logistics and disease prevention perspective, as typically the entire flock will be shipped to market on one day.

Turkey Farm & Processing Plant Tour: Temple Grandin

Leading animal welfare expert Temple Grandin PhD, professor of animal science at Colorado State University, guides the viewing public with an expert eye on the growth and delivery of 253 million turkeys each year. In the video, the viewer gets an up-close look as Grandin interacts with a flock of 15,000 birds roaming easily down the football-field length of a climate-controlled turkey house. When readied for market, those turkeys ride up into conveyor loading trucks and to an orderly delivery at the processing plant. There, the process of humanely stunning the birds renders them unconscious before processing under the watchful presence of USDA government inspectors enforcing safe and sanitary preparation. At each step along the methodical movement of rinsing, cleaning and separating the meat from the carcass, Grandin provides context and common sense explanations. The reality of raising and preparing turkeys for market is revealed in the video for what it is: a modern process that is humane, safe and efficient.

Farm life: Meet local growers at 16th Annual Farm Tour

turkey farm tour

Michael Dorminy was working as a warehouse logistics manager in Tallahassee when the pandemic hit. At the time, he and his wife, Jena, were raising their four young children in the Lake Jackson area.

They had regularly visited the Tallahassee Farmers’ Market and were inspired to raise some backyard chickens of their own. Soon, they wanted to take their goal for fresh food and country living to another level.

“We decided it was time to make a change,” Dorminy said. “We dreamed of having some land. And we wanted the kids to have this lifestyle.”

That lifestyle is “in an environment where they understood the importance of the food that we eat, and the lives that those animals lived,” Dorminy said.

To make that happen, Dorminy quit his job. Jena kept her position with the state Department of Revenue, working remotely. They sold their house, moved to Havana and became first-generation farmers.

“What’s more local than gathering eggs from your own backyard?” Dorminy said.

You can get a chance to meet the Dorminys, those chickens and other animals while visiting La Petite Ferme during the 16th annual Farm Tour , being held Oct. 14-15, a chance to meet the people who grow our food and see how it’s done.

Now, the couple and their children are surrounded by turkeys, chickens, pigs, milk goats, sheep and the kids’ pet rabbits on their six-acre farm, which they’ve dubbed La Petite Ferme (The Little Farm).

They sell their turkeys and chicken for meat and eggs, primarily through the Red Hills Small Farm Alliance online market. Their chicken guard dog, a Great Pyrenees named Soleil, helps guard the flocks. The birds are raised in shaded woods and on pasture lands, rotated seasonally.

“The chickens aren’t cooped up in a warehouse,” Dorminy said. “They can walk around being chickens.”

Meet farmers 'face-to-face'

During the free event, farms, ranches, apiaries and groves in North Central Florida and South Central Georgia will open their doors to the community.

This is the first farm tour for La Petite Ferme, among the 38 destinations on this year’s tour.

“We’d like for people to find out about us,” said Dorminy, who was born and raised in Belgium – hence the French names. “Customers can meet us face-to-face and see the place they’re buying from.”

The event is also an opportunity to find out what it takes to run a farm.

“Maybe they’re a young family and have the same ambition we had,” Dorminy said. “They can see how to farm on a small number of acres.”

Fun activities on the tour

Education and fun activities go hand in hand during the Farm Tour. Here are some of the many highlights:

  • Learn about the historic tradition of making cane syrup at Tallahassee’s Turkey Hill Farm.
  • U-Pick in a pumpkin patch and U-pick flowers at Moccasin Grove in Tallahassee. The farm, which offers varied U-Picks during the year, is a newcomer to the Farm Tour.
  • Find out about methods like aquaponics, hydroponics and raised beds to grow vegetables, flowers and fish at Bluefish Greenhouse Aquaponics, which has three, 3,000-square foot greenhouses in Cairo, Ga. Martin’s Harvest is another place to learn about hydroponic farming and to check out their farm-to-table meals.
  • Visit a working dairy. Arrive at Cindale Farms in Marianna before noon to see the cows milked. Stop by their award-winning dairy, Southern Craft Creamery & Market, to try their ice cream and other farm-to-table products.
  • See how an organic farm works at the Artzi Organic Veggies/Pita Queen property in Thomasville. They’ll be selling their vegetables, baked goods and terrific falafels.
  • Stop by the new facility to rescue livestock or farm animals, run by Redemptive Love Rescue. In some hardships, for instance, a farmer may buy animals they can’t care for anymore. The rescue group is a separate organization from Redemptive Love Farm.
  • Get a tour of Johnston’s Old-Fashioned Meat Market, the patron sponsor of 2023, and sample smoked meats and sandwiches.
  • Take a hay ride through the citrus groves at Florida-Georgia Citrus in Monticello.
  • Explore the organic farm and the store at Orchard Pond Organics.

'A great family weekend'

Kiona and Chris Wagner’s Rocky Soil Family Farm, along with other vendors, will be featuring seasonal crops. Wagner is a chef who bakes homemade sourdough breads and spätzle.

“The Farm Tour is a great family weekend,” said Majken Peterzen, executive director of Millstone Institute for Preservation, which has been the Farm Tour host since 2016.

“Our quest is to get people to come out to meet the farmers and for the farmers to meet the people,” Peterzen said. “Seeing how food is produced really encourages people to shop local.”

The tour also helps farmers develop new markets, she said.

Like the Red Hills Small Farm Alliance and the Red Hills Online Market, the Farm Tour “enables the public to see that our farms, no matter the size, are a valuable and important resource,” said Louise Devine, owner and operator of Turkey Hill Farm with husband Herman Holley. “It helps to connect the community with local farms and artisans.”

She recalls the visit of a young man who said he was inspired to become a farm volunteer after going on a farm tour when he was a kid.

“Now he’s in a Ph.D. program for soil science,” Devine said.

Devine got the idea for a farm tour after coming across one during a trip to North Carolina in 2006.

“I thought this was awesome,” she said. “I pitched the idea to New Leaf Market, and they said ‘Let’s do it.’ ”

Cane syrup demonstration

New Leaf, which later closed, ran the tour for several years before Millstone took it over.

Louise, Herman and their son, Reuben, will be showcasing the historic tradition of making cane syrup at their Turkey Hill Farm. Visitors can watch at least some of the day-long process, which she calls “an old-timey skill.”

Spreading knowledge about the numerous local talents among the region’s farmers is good for everyone, said Kelly Cogswell, who owns Paradise Found Farms with his wife, Chris. This is the fourth year that Paradise Found Farms has participated in the tour.

Kelly was working in the automotive retail business and Chris was a financial analyst when they developed health problems.

One major change the doctor suggested was eating more wholesome foods. The couple began raising chickens, then ducks and turkeys. As their operation grew, they turned eight acres of land into Paradise Found Farms on Jefferson Road in Tallahassee.

They now provide their free-range eggs and poultry to customers, primarily through the Tallahassee Farmers Market.

All these venues make a difference, Cogswell said.

“Knowing where your food comes from, that’s the most important thing, and knowing the people who are producing it for you.”

Tips for the Farm Tour

First, read the Farm Tour booklet, which has a thorough guide to all the places you can visit on the tour. Pay close attention to the days and hours the farms are open for visitors and times for workshops and classes. You can download the guide at https://tinyurl.com/2ths262t or check local nurseries or markets for a copy.

Traveler Reviews

I cant recommend this tour highly enough. I asked a friend to recommend one thing to do with limited time in Moscow and he said, check out the metro. I did one better, and went on this individual tour yesterday with my very well informed guide, Alina. She took me to a number of stations and explained the history, politics and meanings behind the different sculpures and artworks in a way that made the whole experience far more meaningful than getting on and off the metro without guidance would have done. I had a really fantastic time and was thoroughly impressed. To top it all off, we had lunch and Alina suggested some great things for me to do, even whatsapping me maps, suggestions, and internet links. Today she followed up by messaging me to ask how my day was going and if I had any questions about the city, or recommendations for places to eat, etc. A great tour, a lovely guide and a fantastic experience. I couldnt recommend this tour, or Alina, any more highly. Fantastic!

Dear Friends,

My son and myself visited Moscow for a holiday in April 2018. And we had selected this fantastic tour. Our Guide Mrs. Julia came sharp at 10.00 AM even though she was not feeling well and had sore throat. Thereafter she took us to many Metro stations. Though I had already visited Moscow last year and seen all these stations, she gave phenomenal historic background and many interesting facts. She was almost fluent in English and and a good knowledge of Russian Culture, food and many other things. Overall we enjoyed thoroughly and I will highly recommend this tour with Julia if possible. Truly amazing person. And even more amazing tour.

Our Tour booked for 26 December 2017 was absolutely amazing. Our guide Julia picked us up from our Hotel in St Peterburg on time in a luxury minivan. Thanks to Julia we were able to see most of the tourist attractions that day. She went out of her way for us to make our day special. She had a vast knowledge of all the places that we visited. Lunch was special in a typical Russian restaurant with food from the region. I would definitely recommend this tour.

Picked up in the hotel lobby by our guide, Lylie, who then walked us to the closest Metro. She walked/trained us to 13 different stations and then explained the history of the metro and the significance of the decor in each station. We had plenty of time to photo, view the decor, watch and ride the trains and observe the people coming and going with their daily affairs. The art work/mosaics/sculptures/stained glass/ marble all had a role to play in presenting the history of communist Russia. The Russian metro well deserves the title of the most interesting and outstanding metro in the world. Lylie then took us to lunch, advised us on menu choices and their significance in the Russian culture and was very happy answering our questions on how the younger generation is responding to the new Russia. We had an outstanding guide, a fantastic experience and would highly recommend this tour over and above other tours which merely include a visit to a small number of stations. Lesley and David - Sydney

Great guide! She explained everything and took me to all the important stations. She knew her stuff! Worth it!

Our guide ,Dacha, was charming and very informative. We took the 2 hour tour and saw what Dacha thought were the most beautiful and interesting metro stations. The Metro is certainly worthy of its museum status and we were glad to have some of the designs and features explained to us.
