2023 Tour de France bikes — your definitive guide to what the top pro cycling teams are riding this year

2023 Tour de France bikes — your definitive guide to what the top pro cycling teams are riding this year

First Published Jun 28, 2023

Let’s check out the bikes and equipment that the world’s best road cyclists will be riding in the Tour de France.

There are 18 WorldTour men's teams in 2023. All of these will race the Tour de France along with four wildcard teams that have been invited to compete.

Of the WorldTour men's teams, 12 use Shimano groupsets, only one runs Campagnolo and the rest are on SRAM. Perhaps the most unexpected shift (no pun intended) for this season was made by UAE Team Emirates, which dropped Campagnolo as its component sponsor along with other Italian components from its bikes. This might have left quite a few Italians mortified, as the UAE team are now running very Italian Colnago bikes with very much not Italian Shimano groupsets...

In terms of the teams themselves, the men’s WorldTour roster has seen two new teams in 2023: Alpecin-Deceuninck and Arkéa-Samsic. Both Israel-PremierTech and Lotto–Dstny have left the World Tour but they take part in the Tour de France as wildcards alongside TotalEnergies and Uno-X.

Without further ado, let's have a look at the bikes...

AG2R Citroën Team

2023 BMC Team Machine SLR AG2R Citroen Team

We also spotted a new BMC bike being used by team members at the Criterium du Dauphine, and it's likely to see more action in the Tour de France.

> BMC prototype aero superbike spotted at Dauphine

We can also spot something that has become a rarity in the WorldTour: Campagnolo groupsets and wheels.

2023 Dauphine AG2R Campagnolo Super Record - 1

Yes, AG2R Citroen is the only WorldTour team that is running a Campag groupset in 2023. It'll be interesting to see if all of the riders are on the brand-new version of Super Record.

> Campagnolo ditches iconic thumb shifter and goes wireless with new Super Record Wireless electronic groupset... and it'll cost you £4.5k

The team bikes also feature Italian-quality components, with Pirelli tyres and Fizik saddles.

Alpecin–Deceuninck

2023 Dauphine Canyon Aeroad - 1

Alpecin-Deceuninck were only promoted to the WorldTour level this year, which might come as a surprise given riders like Mathieu van der Poel and Jasper Philipsen are in its line-up.

2023 Paris Roubaix Mathieu van der Poel © Zac Williams-SWpix.com - 1 (2)

Spec-wise, the team run Shimano’s Dura-Ace Di2 groupset and wheels. The tyres are Vittoria – usually the new Vittoria Corsa Pro – and the team sit on Selle Italia saddles.

Arkéa–Samsic

2023 Dauphine Arkea Samsic Bianchi Oltre RC - 1

French team Arkéa-Samsic have welcomed Bianchi  as their bike sponsor to replace Canyon, having the Oltre RC, Specialissima and Aquilla TT at their disposal.

2023 Bianchi Oltre RC Arkea Samsic - 1

The bikes come with Shimano groupsets and wheels, except for TTs where the wheels are Vision. The team uses Continental tyres and Selle Italia saddles.

Astana Qazaqstan

2023 Astana Qazaqstan Wilier action - 2.jpeg

Mark Cavendish's Kazakh team is continuing with Wilier Triestina bikes: the Zero SLR and Filante SLR models, equipped with Shimano groupsets and Corima wheels...

2023 Dauphine Wilier Filante HED wheels - 1

...although they've also used wheels from HED, which isn't a sponsor, this year. Those huge blue logos are hardly subtle.

2023 Astana Qazaqstan Wilier action - 1 (1).jpeg

For time trials, the team swaps onto the Wilier Turbine. The fresh “chrome-painted graphite” paintwork of the Wilier frames has impressed art lovers and bike enthusiasts alike.

Bahrain Victorious

2023 Bahrain Victorious Merida Pearl - 1

Bahrain Victorious are using the same trusted Merida bikes as last year, with the Reacto, Scultura and Warp TT models forming the line-up – but in a Pearl finish especially for the Tour de France. It's a "homage to Bahrain’s rich pearling history", apparently.

2023 Dauphine Bahrain Victorious Merida - 1

Shimano Dura-Ace remains the groupset, the wheels are Vision, the saddles Prologo and finishing kit is handled by FSA.

Bora-Hansgrohe

BORA-HANSGROHE 2023

Even though they’ve been a World team since 2017, it was only last year we saw Bora-Hansgrohe win their first Grand Tour when Jai Hindley smashed the Giro d’Italia  and became the first Aussie to win the Giro.

2023 Dauphine Bora Hansgrohe Specialized Tarmac SL7 - 1

The German team rides Specialized bikes, the US brand being a key sponsor. Specialized supplies it all: the Tarmac SL7 for the road, Shiv TT for the time trials, Roval wheels and Specialized tyres. Groupsets are Shimano Dura-Ace Di2, and the saddles and the finishing kit come from both Specialized and Shimano subsidiary PRO.

2023 Look 795 Blade RS road bike - 2 (1)

> Look unveils lightened 795 Blade RS road bike and disc brake-equipped 796 Monoblade RS time trial bike

Cofidis has moved from Campagnolo to Shimano this year, which means they had an opportunity to introduce yet another French brand, Corima, as the wheel sponsor. The tyres on those wheels are from Michelin.

EF Education-Easypost

2023 Dauphine EF Education Cannondale SuperSix Evo - 1

The American team, well known for their bold kit designs, sticks to the same bunch of sponsors as before: Cannondale bikes with Shimano groups, Vision wheels and Prologo saddles.

The riders are on the Cannondale SuperSix Evo (above) which was updated earlier this year.

> Cannondale launches new aero-optimised SuperSix Evo 4 with threaded bottom bracket — all the details + first ride review

2023 Dauphine EF Education Cannondale SystemSix - 1

They also have the SystemSix aero road bike which, launched back in 2018, must surely be the next Cannondale bike to get a refresh.

Groupama-FDJ

2023 Dauphine Lapierre Xelius SL - 1

The French team entering its 28th season is continuing its long-lasting partnership with Lapierre bikes, which come equipped with Shimano groupsets and wheels.

2023 Dauphine Lapierre - 1

In terms of models, the Xelius and Aircode framesets are the go-to options.

Ineos Grenadiers

Ineos Grenadiers Geraint Thomas 2023 Pinarello

Another team with very few changes: Ineos Grenadiers continues to ride the Pinarello Dogma F and the refreshed Bolide TT.

2023 Dauphine Ineos Grenadiers Pinarello Dogma F - 1

The groupsets are Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 and the wheels are usually from Shimano too – although the team has been known to dip into the Lightweight and Princeton ranges in its search for those famous marginal gains.

The tyres are Continental, the saddles Fizik and the finishing kit is from Pinarello's MOST brand.

Intermarché–Circus–Wanty

2023 Dauphine Cube Litening C-68X Aero Intermarche - 1

The Belgian team continues to ride Cube bikes equipped with Shimano groupsets, Newmen wheels and Prologo saddles.

Riders can choose either the superlight Cube Litening Air C:68X or the Litening C:68X Aero for lower drag. The Aerium C:68 TT is there for time trials.

> Cube launches Litening AIR C:68X Series road bikes with a claimed frame weight of 799g

Israel - Premier Tech

2023 Factor Israel Premiertech © Zac WiLLIAMS SWpix.com (t-a Photography Hub Ltd) - 1

Pic © Zac Williams SWpix.com (t-a Photography Hub Ltd)

UCI ProTeam Israel Premier Tech rides bikes from Factor, usually the Ostro VAM (above). However, we know that Factor is releasing a new bike on 10th July 2023, the first Tour de France rest day, which suggests it’s a road race model that’ll play a part in this year’s race. We’ll be keeping our eyes peeled.

Israel Premier Tech use wheels from Factor’s Black Inc brand fitted with Maxxis tyres.

Although the riders use FSA chainsets, the shifters and derailleurs are Shimano Dura-Ace Di2.

Jayco Alula

2023 Dauphine Giant Propel Groenewegen Jayco - 1

Team BikeExchange-Jayco has had a slight name change to Jayco AluIa but the team’s bikes stay the same with riders on Giant’s Propel Advanced SL, TCR Advanced SL (above) and Trinity TT.

Wheels are from Giant's Cadex brand and Shimano is the main equipment partner.

Jumbo-Visma

Jumbo-Visma won the Tour de France last year with Jonas Vingegaard and the team roster for this year's race includes huge names like Wout Van Aert and Christophe Laporte, as well as the defending champion.

2023 Dauphine Jumbo Visma Cervelo Vingegaard - 1

Cervelo is still the bike supplier to both the men's and women's teams, although the S5 (above), R5 and P5 models are now equipped with SRAM groupsets instead of Shimano. Vingegaard used a 1x (single chainring) setup for some stages of the Criterium du Dauphine. It'll be interesting to see if he takes the same approach in the Tour.

> Is Vingegaard going 1x for the Tour de France?

Wheels are new too, with the teams riding on Reserve hoops.

Trek-Road-Camp-Calpe-2022-RB-Web-Res-685

Trek-Segafredo has just changed its name to Lidl-Trek. At the time of writing, it remains to be seen whether the riders will be racing immediately on bikes with updated livery.

The Trek Madone and Emonda road bikes are the usual weapons of choice, with the Speed Concept for time trials.

SRAM supplies the groupsets while Trek's Bontrager brand provides pretty much everything else.

Lotto–Dstny

Lotto–Dstny use bikes from Ridley, usually the lightweight Helium or the aero Noah. However, we spotted a prototype being ridden by Maxim Van Gils in the Criterium du Dauphine, and it doesn’t look like any bike from the existing range.

2023 Dauphine Ridley prototype - 1 (1)

> New Ridley road bike breaks cover at Critérium du Dauphiné

We don’t have a name or a launch date yet but it looks like Ridley is combining light weight with aero features – which has been a big trend in the road bike market over the past few years.

2023 Dauphine Ridley prototype - 4

Lotto–Dstny uses Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 groupsets, DT Swiss wheels and Vittoria tyres.

Movistar Team

2023 Dauphine Canyon Ultimate Movistar - 1

Movistar continues to ride Canyon bikes – the lightweight Ultimate (above) and the aero-optimised Aeroad (below).

2023 Dauphine Canyon Aeroad Movistar - 1

The team uses SRAM Red eTap groupsets, Zipp wheels and Fizik saddles.

Soudal Quick-Step

2023 Specialized Tarmac SL7 Soudal QuickStep Yves Lampaert - 1

After yet another name change (the eighth, if you’re counting), Soudal Quick-Step races the 2023 season with trusty Specialized bikes and Roval wheels, saddles, tyres and finishing kit. Groupsets are still from Shimano.

2023 Dauphine Scott Foil Team DSM - 1

Scott returns to provide the DSM men's and women's teams with bikes, the Foil RC being the popular choice for most stages.

> Check out our review of the Scott Foil RC Pro 2023

2023 Dauphine Scott Foil - 1

The groupsets are Shimano Dura-Ace Di2, the wheels are Shimano and wrapped on them are Vittoria tyres. Scott’s subsidiary Syncros is providing all of the finishing kit, including the saddles.

TotalEnergies

2023 Dauphine Specialized Tarmac SL7 TotalEnergies Boasson Hagen - 1

Although it’s a UCI ProTeam rather than a WorldTeam, TotalEnergies boasts riders of the calibre of Edvard Boasson Hagen and Peter Sagan on the Tour de France start list.

2023 Dauphine Specialized Tarmac SL7 TotalEnergies Boasson Hagen - 1 (1)

The team is sponsored by Specialized so uses Tarmac SL7 road bikes and Royal wheels.

2023 Dauphine Specialized Tarmac SL7 TotalEnergies Boasson Hagen - 2

This is yet another team that uses Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 groupsets.

UAE Team Emirates

2023 Dauphine Colnago V4Rs Trentin - 1

The UAE Team Emirates riders have used the Colnago V4RS road bike this year after Tadej Pogačar raced on the prototype version in 2022.

It's all change regarding the groupset, UAE Team Emirates switching from Campagnolo to Shimano.

Pirelli tyres have been swapped to  Continental , and the wheels are now Enve.

UNO-X Pro Cycling Team

2023 Dauphine Dare - 1

Uno-X has changed little for 2023. Norway's Dare continues to be the bike and finishing kit sponsor – a brand that's little known in the UK. The bikes come equipped with Shimano groupsets and DT Swiss wheels.

They only had an image of the Oltre RC. I am biased, I think the Specialissima looks fine.

That is a lovely looking bike to be fair. Probably their only decent looking tour level bike in the last 10 years though. The aria also looks good, but not tour level.

Red Bull concludes deal to purchase UCI WorldTour team Bora-Hansgrohe

E nergy drinks giant Red Bull has completed its acquisition of Bora-Hansgrohe, the German-based WordTour team, to make its first entry into professional road cycling.

Red Bull, which has worked with Bora-Hansgrohe and its junior development team in recent years, filed a notice with Austria’s Federal Competition Authority of its intent to acquire a controlling interest in the team in January.

The Austria-based firm has now purchased a 51% stake in RD Pro Cycling GmbH & Co KG and RD Beteiligungs GmbH, the two companies that own and manage the team.

The two companies have been owned or controlled by team founder and manager Ralph Denk, his family, and other partners. Denk, a former cyclist, previously held the majority stake and will continue as team manager.

In addition, Red Bull will become a title partner of the team alongside German companies Bora and Hansgrohe.

Beginning with this year’s Tour de France, the team will ride under the name Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe.

Denk said: “We have always been in a very healthy position and have achieved an extraordinary level together with Bora and Hansgrohe. And we also want to continue to win in the future.

“That's why I was looking for another strong partner who fits with me and our current team, shares our vision, and acts innovatively and sustainably. We have known Red Bull as a team partner for three years and they are known as a sponsor and developer in the sport like no other.

“We now have access to the Red Bull world. This knowledge is unique in the world of sports, and we look forward to benefiting from this expertise and taking the next steps together.”

The cycling team was founded by Denk in 2009 and launched as a UCI Continental team, NetApp, for the 2010 season. It then progressed to ProContinental level in 2011 and in 2013, became NettApp-Endura, before being renamed Bora-Argon 18 in 2015.

On entering WorldTour level in 2017, the team was named Bora-Hansgrohe and signed then-world champion Peter Sagan. The team has since then worked closely with Red Bull and uses the company’s athlete performance center in Thalgau, Austria.

Its junior development team, meanwhile, is named Red Bull Junior Brothers.

From 2025, Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe will launch a new under-23 team, with the long-term development of young riders from within their own ranks a key part of the new strategy.

The acquisition adds to Red Bull’s investments in sport, which includes motor racing’s Formula 1 through the Red Bull Racing and Scuderia Alpha Tauri teams, soccer’s RB Leipzig, RB Salzburg, and New York Red Bulls, and ice hockey’s EC Salzburg.

"Red Bull concludes deal to purchase UCI WorldTour team Bora-Hansgrohe" was originally created and published by Sportcal , a GlobalData owned brand.

A 2021 study found that the Tour de France produced 216,388 tons of carbon dioxide. The UCI has announced a mandatory and aggressive reduction of emissions produced by teams.

col du glandon, france july 23, 2015 row of technical cars driving on the road to col du glandon in alps during the stage 18 of le tour de france 2015

In what is the competitive cycling’s biggest move yet to help protect the environment, WorldTour cycling teams have been told that they will have to cut their emissions in half by 2027 if they want to retain or earn a license to compete in the sport’s highest reaches.

He continued, “In front of me is the (UCI’s handbook on future direction) Agenda 2030 and the goals are the same for the UCI as they are for the stakeholders: we have to reduce by 50 percent by 2027 and be at zero by 2030. This will be certified by independent experts.”

At present, the UCI WorldTour counts eighteen men’s teams and fifteen women’s teams, with more in the lower ranks attempting to race their way into a WorldTour license. Additionally, teams must meet certain financial and ethical criteria in order to be included in the sport’s highest echelon.

In an effort to achieve carbon neutrality, teams have been encouraged to transition to electric power for their team busses and support vehicles. The UCI has also recommended that all permanent team headquarters and facilities install solar paneling.

Thanks in large part to the great dichotomy of one of the greenest modes of transportation on Earth being the cause of so much pollution, bicycle racing has long been at the center of the discussion on climate change, at least in relation to sports’ role in combating global warming.

In 2021, Belgian WorldTour team Deceuninck QuickStep (today called Soudal-QuickStep) announced they had become the world’s first carbon-neutral bike racing team . However, along with the news, the team announced just what it took them to reach carbon neutrality; the offsetting of 1288 tons of carbon dioxide.

In a statement, Deceuninck QuickStep said the quantity was “the equivalent of driving a car 179 times around the world or 539 return flights between Brussels and New York. The amount of forestation required to capture this amount of CO2 is the equivalent of around 3099 football pitches.”

Massive races like the Tour de France don’t help. A 2021 study found that the Tour produced 216,388 tons of carbon dioxide.

The teams, with their support vehicles, busses, and travel to and from races, are only one element of that. The Tour itself employs a small fleet of helicopters , their own cavalcade of support and promotional vehicles, and television production crews from around the world. Not to mention the innumerable fans who flock to watch the race live (to wit, this writer is leaving to go see his first Tour next week).

However, since the Tour was first audited in 2013, emissions have decreased by as much as 43 percent across a variety of factors.

According to Lappartient, putting more onus onto the teams is the next logical step in the evolution of a more Earth-conscious sport. But he did add that not every team was fully on board with the plan going forward.

“Some of them are on board, some of them are more into greenwashing,” he said, adding, “it’s something that whether you like it or not, you have to be part of.”

The surprise wildcard - Uzbekistan team in running for 2024 Tour de France Femmes

Rival teams dispute UCI points tally as Tashkent City Women’s PCT hits wildcard places, focus on key WorldTour races and Olympic Games

Uzbekistan National Champion Yanina Kuskova takes part in the elite women's road race at the 2023 World Championships

When the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift rolls out of Rotterdam on August 12, 2024, there could be a few surprising names in the peloton.

A UCI Women’s squad from Uzbekistan, Tashkent City Women’s Pro Cycling Team, currently looks set to be invited to all Women’s WorldTour races in 2024 after finishing 19th in the UCI World Ranking of teams at the end of 2023.

The merger between Liv Racing TeqFind and Jayco-AlUla (to be renamed Liv-AlUla-Jayco in 2024) and the folding of EF Education-TIBCO-SVB has effectively pushed the Uzbek team up to 17th and into the third of the three wildcard spots normally reserved for the top three Continental teams in the world ranking.

Tashkent’s road to racing in the Women’s WorldTour in 2024 has not been a straightforward one and it has not yet been confirmed – several rival teams have lobbied with the UCI over the validity of some of their points-scoring results since the summer.

The wildcard allocations are yet to be made official for the 2024 season, with the UCI having told Cyclingnews that the “registration procedure is currently ongoing and a list of all obligatory invitations for the 2024 UCI WorldTour events shall be published on the UCI website at a later date” – thought to be the December 12.

Tashkent planning a limited WorldTour schedule

Tashkent geared their entire 2023 season around winning as many UCI points as possible, with the intent to earn Uzbekistan a spot in the 2024 Olympic Games road race, which they achieved comfortably.

The team, backed by the Uzbekistan government, expects the wildcard to be confirmed by the UCI. However, they are only planning to race a few WorldTour events in 2024 due to budgetary constraints, team size and a lack of cycling infrastructure.

“The finance from the government is just for Olympic medals, not for the Tour de France or Giro d’Italia,” the team’s coach, Gleb Groysman, told Cyclingnews .

“We cannot race all WorldTour races because we don't have enough riders. We have maybe three or four girls ready to race in the WorldTour, and they are very young.

“We have a very, very hard situation because there are not enough bikes, wheels, anything…staff is problem number one. There are no professional staff there.”

It’s symptomatic of a nation that has risen through the cycling ranks at a sensational pace since Groysman took the reins as coach of the women’s national programme in 2021.

The team are hoping for additional financial support from the government or for a sponsor to come on board so that they can fulfil their race schedule for next season. Groysman wants to raise an additional $500,000 in budget.

Tashkent plan to race the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift, Giro d’Italia Women and a few other WorldTour stage races such as the UAE Tour, but Groysman is not planning to take the team to any of the one-day classics in the spring, apart from a possible ride at Strade Bianche in March.

Most of the major one-day races in the spring clash with the international track programme, which is a greater priority due to Uzbekistan’s Olympic ambitions in the velodrome.

Central Asia’s first team to race the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift

Uzbekistan is a nation with some history in cycling, in particular the exploits of the enigmatic Djamolidine Abdoujaparov, one of the most successful sprinters of the 1990s, and recent WorldTour professional Sergey Lagutin.

However, Groysman, who coached a teenage Pavel Sivakov in his native Russia but is now living in the USA, described the Central Asian country as “not a cycling country, absolutely not.”

As the name suggests, Tashkent City Women’s Pro Cycling Team is based in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan. It solely features Uzbek riders, the most well-known of these being Olga Zabelinskaya.

Before joining her current team, the 43-year-old Zabelinskaya had been part of European and American-based UCI teams since 2004, most recently racing for Roland Cogeas Edelweiss Squad in 2022.

Zabelinskaya has three Olympic medals to her name, having taken silver in the individual time trial in 2016 and two bronzes in 2012, all when representing Russia. She was also 7th at October’s Tour of Chongming Island Women’s World Tour race.

The team also features several promising young talents, such as Margarita Misyurina and Yanina Kuskova, the latter particularly impressed this season when she finished second at the Italian stage race Trofeo Ponente in Rosa, just behind Jolanda Neff.

“I cannot say to you our results for next year, but I'm sure we can reach our goals in the top of the races because they are very, very motivated. All the girls are very, very motivated and ready to work. I don't have any problem with working, they really work, 24/7. So, I hope we can be top of the races next year,” Groysman said.

“We cannot win the Tour de France or Giro d’Italia. A good result for us in the first year would be to finish there with all our riders. Maybe on one stage a top-three, maybe. We cannot win right now, but if we can finish, it would be great for our first season racing in the WorldTour.”

European teams raise points query with UCI

A brief foray into the late-season Chinese WorldTour races aside, Tashkent raced a low-profile calendar in 2023. They secured UCI points in smaller one-day races, continental championships and national championships.

The compilation of points helped them to surprisingly shoot up the UCI team rankings early in the season, above established European UCI Women’s teams such as Cofidis and St Michel-Mavic-Auber 93 - bumping the latter out of the wildcard places.

As the season wore on, St Michel-Mavic-Auber 93 became suspicious of Tashkent’s points haul. In the summer, the French team raised a query with the UCI alongside several others.

“As we had the 2024 wildcard as the main goal for our 2023 season, we always had an eye on the UCI World Ranking,” St Michel-Mavic-Auber 93 Head of Communications and Development, Charlie Nerzic, told Cyclingnews .

“Mid-season, we started to see that Tashkent was getting many points on races that did not match UCI minimum requirement regarding participants or with both the national team with Tashkent riders and Tashkent racing.”

UCI rules state that road races must have a minimum of 40 riders to award UCI points. Tashkent had scored points in several races in Cyprus in February, which did not meet this standard.

In a series of one-day races at home in Uzbekistan in May and at the Belgrade GP Woman Tour the month later, Tashkent fielded riders representing the Uzbekistan National Team as well as their own team. In theory, this would allow Tashkent to score points with double the number of riders at each race.

Groysman said that the team simply “didn’t know” that this was against the rules. “We were in Europe with eight riders, so we asked the organisation in Belgrade, could we put in two teams, four and four? And they said, 'yes, you can,'” Groysman added in defence.

In October, the UCI removed points from most of the races in Uzbekistan and Cyprus. The team were also retrospectively disqualified from the 2.2 Belgrade GP Woman Tour.

“The UCI published a new UCI World Ranking, and most of the problematic points were deleted,” Nerzic said.

However, Nerzic had also raised a concern with the UCI about Uzbekistan’s national championships.

Tashkent had gained a significant number of points by starting riders who were eligible in both the under-23 and elite races, filling the top 10 in almost every event.

This is legal within the UCI’s rules and a “nice way to cash 700 points,” according to Nerzic. However, this practice is only permitted if the under-23 and elite championships are contested over separate races, which is something St Michel “doubted.”

Groysman affirmed the results, stating that the under-23 and elite races took place on separate weekends and even had a UCI commissaire present. He also pointed out that this is a common practice in other countries too.

Tashkent’s 709 points gained at the national championships stand and form more than a third of their 2023 total.

With the UCI process now complete, to Nerzic’s knowledge, Tashkent should earn its wildcard according to UCI rules. As the rankings stand at the time of writing, Tashkent sits 203 points ahead of St Michel after point deductions.

“Facts are now that we won't get awarded the mandatory wildcard for 2024. It is what it is. We simply hope that races organisers will see our value and invite us,” Nerzic said.

Tashkent’s wildcard success could be viewed as a positive for the UCI’s agenda to globalise the sport. It shows that wherever a team is based, they can access the world’s biggest races if they score enough points. However, the manner in which Tashkent scored their points and unknown ability of many of their riders, may leave others questioning the process which delivered the Uzbek squad a place at the top table of cycling.

Giro d'Italia 2024: How to Watch a UCI World Tour Cycling Livestream for Free

It's the first Grand Tour of the 2024 season.

uci world team tour de france

The battle for the maglia rosa begins this weekend, as the world's best riders take on the 107th edition of the Giro d'Italia.

The first of the three Grand Tours in 2024, this year's event sees two-time Tour de France winner Tadej Pogačar make his debut in the race for UAE Team Emirates.

The Slovenian star is marked out as favorite to win with the bookies, with strong competition set to come from last year's runner-up Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) and Ben O'Connor (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) over the course of the 21-stage event.

Below, we'll outline the best  live TV streaming services  to use to watch the Giro d'Italia live wherever you are in the world.

Giro d'Italia 2024: Where and when is it?

How to watch the Giro d'Italia 2024 online from anywhere using a VPN

If you find yourself unable to view the race locally, you may need a different way to watch -- that's where using a VPN can come in handy. A VPN is also the best way to stop your ISP from throttling your speeds by encrypting your traffic, and it's also a great idea if you're traveling and find yourself connected to a Wi-Fi network, and you want to add an extra layer of privacy for your devices and logins.

With a VPN, you're able to virtually change your location on your phone, tablet or laptop to get access to what you want to watch. If your internet provider or mobile carrier has stuck you with an IP address that incorrectly shows your location in a blackout zone, a VPN can correct that problem by giving you an IP address in your correct, non-blackout area. Most VPNs, like our  Editors' Choice, ExpressVPN , make it really easy to do this.

Using a VPN to watch or stream sports is legal in any country where VPNs are legal, including the US, UK and Canada, as long as you have a legitimate subscription to the service you're streaming. You should be sure your VPN is set up correctly to prevent leaks: Even where VPNs are legal, the streaming service may terminate the account of anyone it deems to be circumventing correctly applied blackout restrictions.

Quick tips for streaming Giro d'Italia 2024 using a VPN

  • With four variables at play -- your ISP, browser, video streaming provider and VPN -- your experience and success when streaming the 2024 Giro d'Italia live may vary.
  • If you don't see your desired location as a default option for ExpressVPN, try using the "search for city or country" option.
  • If you're having trouble after you've turned on your VPN and set it to the correct viewing area, there are two things you can try for a quick fix. First, log into your streaming service subscription account and make sure the address registered for the account is an address in the correct viewing area. If not, you may need to change the physical address on file with your account. Second, some smart TVs -- like Roku -- don't have VPN apps you can install directly on the device itself. Instead, you'll have to install the VPN on your router or the mobile hotspot you're using (like your phone) so that any device on its Wi-Fi network now appears in the correct viewing location.
  • All of the VPN providers we recommend have helpful instructions on their main site for quickly installing the VPN on your router. In some cases with smart TV services, after you install a cable network's sports app, you'll be asked to verify a numeric code or click a link sent to your email address on file for your smart TV. This is where having a VPN on your router will also help, since both devices will appear to be in the correct location.
  • And remember, browsers can often give away a location despite using a VPN, so be sure you're using a privacy-first browser to log into your services. We normally recommend  Brave .

Para-cyclists to take on Tour de France team time trial course

On Monday July 9th, the Tour de France peloton will set off for a rolling 35.5km team time trial, starting and finishing in Cholet. One hour beforehand, eight of France’s top para-cyclists will cover the same course on handbikes in a demonstration of the discipline.

The handbike is one of four types of bike – alongside tandems, tricycles and traditional bikes – ridden in the para-cycling discipline. At an international level, athletes compete in the UCI Para-cycling Road World Cup, UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships and, for tandems and traditional bikes, the UCI Para-cycling Track World Championships. Para-cycling also features on the programme of the Paralympic Games.

In the 2013 Tour de France, Czech para-cyclist Jiri Jezek, amputated below the right knee, opened proceedings in the 11th stage individual time trial between Avranches and Mont-Saint-Michel.

While Jezek rode a traditional bike with adaptations, this latest initiative involving handbikes is unprecedented and is a result of collaboration between Tour de France organiser ASO and the French Handisport Federation (Fédération Française Handisport – FFH).

Although para-cyclists often compete in individual time trials, the team time trial is not an official event included in the UCI Regulations.

“So this will be a first for our athletes,” said FFH Cycling Sport Director Jérôme Dupré, who instigated the initiative. “I don’t think they will face more difficulties than able-bodied cyclists. Cohesion, regularity, precision and communication among the team members are always key in such an exercise.”

Dupré underlined: “It is not a question of comparing our performance with those of the professional riders but more to put para-cycling in the spotlight.”

Members of the eight-strong time trial team were selected for their homogeneity and include several Paralympians and French national champions in the different handcycling sport classes, including reigning UCI World Champion in the H3 road race David Franek.

Dupré explained that the athletes would be competing this weekend in the second round of the UCI Para-cycling Road World Cup taking place in Emmen, the Netherlands, where they will try to fit in a joint training session for the team time trial. They will travel directly to Cholet on Sunday evening and will be able to warm up on the time trial course Monday morning.

At 13h45, the handbike team will be on the start ramp, ready for a 13h55 depart. The first Tour de France team will set off at 15h00.

In an interview with HandiSport.org Dupré declared: “The Tour de France is unquestionably the most-watched annual sporting event of the year. It benefits from exceptional exposure. There are a great many spectators. I hope this promotion of para-cycling will motivate would-be sportsmen and women, and raise awareness among potential partners."
