Greece is famous for its picture-perfect beaches and romantic island escapes. One of TPG's favorite destinations to visit, Greece won last year's TPG editor's choice award as the top travel destination of the year in 2021, thanks to its sensible health measures , new influx of hotels, resorts, and flight routes, and its unwavering support of the cruise industry .

While 2021 was an ideal time to see some of Greece's more popular tourist destinations with fewer crowds at more affordable prices, as post-pandemic travel picks up, it's time once again to consider some of Greece's underrated destinations.

Related: Why the one Greek island I'd always avoided is now one of my favorites

1. Kastellorizo

underrated places to visit in greece

You may have never even heard of Kastellorizo, an island also known as Megisti, until now. Closer to Turkey than to Greece, the island will captivate you. Ease yourself in and start with its beautiful harbor, where the sun shines down on colorful neoclassical buildings scattered along the seaside.

Just like many Aegean and Mediterranean islands, Kastellorizo features a blue grotto sea cave to explore by boat. Another must-see is the Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhode, which offers views of neighboring Turkey from its perch on a reddish hill.

2. Oh Alonissos Marine Park

underrated places to visit in greece

The largest protected marine area in Europe , Alonissos Marine Park is one of the best destinations in Greece to view marine life, most notably Mediterranean monk seals. It's also a prime spot to scuba dive , snorkel or even visit historic monasteries and churches.

The park is made up of several islands (some uninhabited) that are covered in pine and strawberry trees, orchids, wildflowers and herbs such as wild sage and oregano. Underwater, there are numerous types of seagrass that more than 300 marine species call home. Visitors may also spot dolphins, sperm whales and loggerhead turtles in the Alonissos waters.

underrated places to visit in greece

The hills of Mount Olympus hold far more than just tales of Greek mythology. They're also home to the town of Rapsani and its accompanying vineyards. Rapsani is a red wine created from a blend of three different grapes: Xinomavro, Krassato and Stavroto. Visiting this sloping wine region is truly an off-the-beaten-path experience.

In order to access the vineyards that climb up the hills, you'll need to get off the road and drive along dirt trails. Pair a visit to the most famous winery in the area, Tsantali, with a trip to the nearby Mount Olympus National Park.

4. Nafplion

underrated places to visit in greece

Nafplion is one of the most beautiful and romantic towns in the Peloponnese region of Greece for an alternative seaside holiday. An easy drive from Athens, Nafplion features a picturesque old town and harbor that are perfect for strolling.

Arvanitia Beach is pebbly but has clear turquoise water ideal for a refreshing swim. Make sure to visit the Bourtzi Castle, a 15th-century medieval fortress that sits on a tiny islet just off the coast of the charming town.

5. The Athens Riviera

underrated places to visit in greece

If you don't have enough time to head to the Greek islands , a visit to the Athens Riviera, a stunning stretch of coastline, gives you an easy dose of sand and sun. Just 30 minutes away from the Greek capital, the coastal area is accessible by car or even tram from Athens , so you don't need to fret over the ferries.

The area teems with many beautiful beaches, plus fancy nightclubs, quaint harbors, hidden sea caves and tranquil fishing coves. One of the most popular areas to visit with a few sandy beaches is Voula, which also has towering rocks that overlook Lake Vouliagmeni.

Spend the night at the new(ish) Four Seasons Astir Palace Hotel, a fancy hideaway just 30 minutes from Athens city center on the tip of the Riviera.

6. Vikos Aoos National Park

underrated places to visit in greece

Greece has an immense amount of natural beauty beyond just its most famous islands. If you're an outdoorsy type, we recommend heading straight to Vikos Aoos National Park in northwest Greece.

The park is named after its precipitous gorges, Vikos Gorge and Aoos Gorge. Besides exploring these two epic natural wonders, travelers can enjoy outdoor activities among the many rivers, canyons, lakes, mountains and woodlands within the park. Expect to see a number of different bird species, plus animals like otters, foxes, wolves and deer — and watch out for brown bears!

7. Kastoria

underrated places to visit in greece

Part of Greece but in the Macedonia region, Kastoria is often compared to the Amalfi Coast , only without the tourists. The Hellenic town sits along a peninsula that juts out into Lake Orestiada. The lake — deemed a national monument in Greece — is backed by rocky, wooded mountains.

Besides enjoying the lake, visitors can explore the Byzantine churches and Ottoman architecture in Kastoria. One of the most important attractions is the Panagia Mavriotissa Monastery, which sits on the shores of the lake and dates back to the 11th century.

8. Elafonisos

underrated places to visit in greece

An island often frequented by Greek travelers, Elafonisos sits off the coast of the Peloponnese region near Athens. Although it's tiny, Elafonisos still has abundant white-sand beaches and crystal clear waters. Besides the island's glorious beaches (Simos Beach is a favorite for its unique shape), there are ancient ruins to explore.

Divers can appreciate the island's underwater ruins, too. Pavlopetri is one of the oldest complete sunken towns found underwater. The best part? Elafonisos is only a 10-minute ferry ride from Pounta, a port in the Peloponnese region, perfect for travelers who want to minimize travel time on their vacation or who get seasick on long ferry rides.

9. Lefkas (Lefkada)

This Greek island in the Ionian Sea is one of the few islands in Greece you can actually drive to — it's connected to mainland Greece by a causeway. Even though it's technically not a freestanding island, it's just as breathtaking as its island neighbors, with white-sand beaches and charming Greek villages . One of the island's most iconic beaches is Porto Katsiki, backed by an enormous, awe-inspiring cliff.

underrated places to visit in greece

Windsurfers should head to its southern beach Vassiliki, while kitesurfers will prefer the beaches in the north of this breezy island. If you need a sand and sun break, check out the fishing cove Sivota, visit the coastal village of Vlichos or soak in the natural beauty of Karia, a tiny hamlet located in a fertile valley further inland.

Bottom line

underrated places to visit in greece

There are plenty of destinations for travelers who want to get off the tourist track or try something a little different.

Traveling to lesser-known spots means you'll be able to experience more traditional Greek culture, sample local wine and cuisine, find those stunning deserted beaches or visit some of the country's lesser-visited monuments and attractions.

Be sure to check out the harbor, which is still largely the heart of the island. You can also drive or take a taxi to Panormitis, a monastery located in the south of Symi. One of the most popular pastimes on Symi is coastal walking, and there are miles of easy-to-navigate trails throughout the island.

It is located on a promontory stretching over the beautiful Lake Orestiada, and it is surrounded by gorgeous limestone mountains. There’s also amazing cuisine, impressive nightlife and plenty of historic Byzantine churches. Despite all of that, it is rarely visited by international travelers.

Head to Kastoria and head underground to the remarkable Cave of the Dragon, or learn about the city’s history and culture at the Byzantine Museum of Kastoria. Don’t leave until you’ve dined at an outdoor cafe with a view of the lake and sipped tsipouro, a local version of ouzo.

2. Folegandros

Folegandros

Folegandros, also known as Pholegandros, is one of the small islands found in the Cyclades chain. The landscape on the island is varied, and includes tall cliffs and a large cave. The capital of the island is built on the edge of a 200 meter (650 feet) high cliff. The biggest reason to visit Folegandros is to enjoy some of the best beaches in Greece , many of which will be secluded or at least not very busy.

You can hike around Katergo Beach, and you’ll be stunned by the crystal clear water of Galifos Beach. Angali Beach is the most popular on the island, and it can get busy during the summer months. Tavernas are steps away from Angali Beach, which means that you can enjoy amazing seafood and local wine with a view of the water.

1. Kefalonia

Kefalonia

The Greek Ionian Islands are among the best loved of Greece’s 6,000 islands. Kefalonia belongs to this group, but it is not as well known as other Ionian Islands like Corfu. Kefalonia is just as beautiful, and boasts breathtaking scenery, but it is a lot less developed and less crowded.

On Kefalonia, you can head to the brilliant Drogarati Caves, or you could join a boat tour and admire the island’s four peninsulas from the water. The famous Myrtos Beach, on the island’s west coast, has been repeatedly voted one of the best beaches of the world.

underrated places to visit in greece

1. Trikala, Greece’s hidden gem for year-round travel

Recommended by Cassie from MexicoCassie.com

Trikala  is a small village in the region of Corinth in the north of the Peloponnese region of Greece. It’s a short two-hour trip (155km) from Athens. But once you’re in this region, you’ll feel like you’re in another world. Athenians head to Trikala in the wintertime to ski but it’s also where they flock all year round to eat in the incredible restaurants in this small village.

While I recommend staying in Trikala because of the wonderful hospitality and views, it’s imperative to get out and explore the area. What makes Trikala particularly interesting is that the village is split into three parts – Upper, Mid and Lower. Most people live in Lower Trikala and most restaurants are in this area. The majority of guesthouses are in Upper Trikala. This, of course, means it’s really necessary to have a car if you’re visiting.

Trikala, a quiet place in Greece

While on this hidden gem of Greece, don’t miss the stunning Lake Doxa where you can kayak, use pedalos, or enjoy strolling around the beautiful lake.

Another must-see is the St Georgios Monastery, up on the hills above the lake. The monastery itself is beautiful and the views over Lake Doxa are enough to make you weep. Panagia Katafygiotissa (Holy Mary of the Shelters) is another must for incredible views all the way to the ocean.

Trikala and the surrounding area are good to visit all year round. In winter, it’s covered in snow and is a popular location for gentle skiing (the slope isn’t huge). In spring, the wildflowers are magnificent. In the summer, it’s gloriously warm and fun to frolic in the lakes, streams and even the sea. Autumn is perfect for hiking and seeing the leaves turning.

No matter when you choose to visit this Greece hidden gem, you’ll be sure to have this place to yourself, away from the crowds! Spend a few days here to truly enjoy this off-the-beaten-path destination in Greece.

2. Monemvasia, a unique place to visit in Greece

Recommended by Simina from TravelWithSimina.com

Monemvasia, often referred to as the “Gibraltar of Greece,” is a hidden gem on the southeast coast of the Peloponnese peninsula. It’s a great place to get off the beaten path in Greece.

There are several things that make  Monemvasia worth visiting . The medieval fortress town offers a unique setting as the only way to access it is over a causeway. Moreover, its history dates back to the Byzantine era so it feels like stepping back in time.

Monemvasia has well-preserved buildings and as it is located on a rocky peninsula, you get beautiful views of the Myrtoan Sea, especially during sunrise and sunset.

Monemvasia. a unique place in Greece

There are many things you can do in Monemvasia. You can hike the fortress and see the views of the town and sea, try local Greek cuisine in one of the restaurants, visit the wineries and explore the old town.

In order to get to Monemvasia, you’ll need to drive there or get a bus from Athens. You can rent a car and drive to Monemvasia from Athens. It’s about a 3.5 to 4-hour journey. Alternatively, you can drive from Kalamata, another hidden gem in Greece. This ride will take you around 2 hours and 20 minutes or from Nafplio (3 hours depending on traffic).

The best time to visit Monemvasia is during the spring (April to June) and early autumn (September to October). The weather is not that hot and the crowds are smaller. Avoid the peak summer season if you prefer a quieter experience.

While Monemvasia is small, it offers many experiences, so it’s perfect as a day trip from nearby towns like Kalamata or Nafplio, or spending at least 2-3 days in one of the hotels in town .

Monemvasia is a hidden gem in Greece, perfect for travelers seeking a unique and less crowded destination with a rich history, stunning views, and delicious cuisine.

3. Kalamata, another Greece hidden gem in the Peloponnese region

Recommended by Nikki of SheSavesSheTravels.com

Kalamata, Greece in the Peloponnese region in the south is a perfect place for a fabulous vacation away from the crowds! This Greece off-the-beaten-path destination is lesser-known yet accessible from Athens, while also being relatively affordable.

Kalamata is best done via rental car , but can also be accessed via bus from Athens. After spending  2 days in Athens , you can head southwest to Kalamata. Within 3 hours, you can be in the southern part of the Peloponnese, where the warm personalities and awesome beaches welcome you!

Kalamata, Greece Hidden gem

Staying for 2-3 days, you can really get to know this underrated town in Greece. There are plenty of accommodations to book in town. Be sure to visit the Kalamata Castle, Archaeological Museum of Messina, Central Square, Museum of Traditional Greek Costumes, Bouka Beach, Railway Park and so much more! Walk downtown and marvel at the old churches – which Greece is known for, of course.

The vibrant town has a fun downtown with nightly entertainment at restaurants. The beaches are rocky, long and welcoming in Kalamata! With this underrated gem in Greece, you certainly don’t have to worry about the beaches being crowded, unlike some other destinations in the country.

From Kalamata, you can also visit the famous Voidokilia Beach, which is just about a 1.5-hour drive away. This is definitely a summertime destination, with June – September being the best time to visit. There’s so much to see and do in this underrated region in Greece!

4. Nafplio, a non-touristy town in Greece with tons of history

Recommended by Kate from  Bags-Always-Packed.com

Once the original capital of Greece, today the beautiful town of Nafplio is a relaxing seaside destination that’s off the radar for the average foreign tourist.

With not one, not two, but three different castles to explore, there are plenty of beautiful sights to see in this historic town. Perhaps the most spectacular is the Venetian Fortress of Palamidi which looms over the city atop a 216m hill offering gorgeous views of its surroundings.

Make sure to allow plenty of time to yourself to get lost in the gorgeous cobblestone streets filled with ancient buildings, winding walkways, colorful flowers, and of course, plenty of friendly cats.

Nafplio, a non-touristy town in Greece

Nafplio is quite a popular vacation spot for locals but doesn’t yet seem to have been discovered by the hordes of foreign travelers who flock to Greece each year. What’s great about that is that you will find cheaper prices and fewer crowds, while still having access to a handful of museums, archeological sites, souvenir shops plus plenty of delicious Mediterranean restaurants (make sure to check out Alkioni Wine Bar).

Being just a 2-hour drive from Athens, it’s almost too easy to reach this gorgeous city whether you want to visit as a day trip or spend up to 3 days lapping up the culture. There are some great accommodations to choose from in town.

The best time to visit is in spring (April & May) and fall (September & October) when the temperatures are warm and the picturesque streets are in full bloom while avoiding the harsh mid-summer heat.

Napflio has plenty to offer and is a great destination to get off the beaten path in Greece.

5. Kefalonia, one of the least touristy Greek islands

Recommended by Karen of OutdoorAdventureSampler.com

While many visitors to the Greek Islands flock to Santorini or Mykonos, the island of Kefalonia is an off-the-beaten-path destination not to miss. It’s the largest of the islands in the Ionian Sea. Located west of the Peloponnese Peninsula, it’s a pleasant ferry ride from Kyllini or Patras.

Kefalonia is touted to have the most beautiful beach in Greece, Myrtos Beach. Additionally, many more beaches with crystal clear water dot the Kefalonia seashore. Spring and fall are the best times to visit.

Kefalonia, a non-touristy island in Greece

The picturesque village of Assos is a jewel of Kefalonia, where you can hike up to the castle for amazing views. Fiskardo is another attractive fishing village to stroll through, with great shopping and restaurants.

Outdoor adventurers will love the natural beauty of Kefalonia. A  sea kayak trip along the Kefalonia shore  goes to sea arches and caves. You can also rent a powerboat to cruise along the shore and explore uninhabited beaches. In addition, a series of hiking trails wind through the island’s natural areas. You can hike to the top of Mt Ainos, the highest mountain in Kefalonia.

Kefalonia - Melissani cave - one of the least touristy islands in Greece

Melissani Cave is a popular attraction in Kefalonia. A short boat tour on the aqua blue lake inside the cave is magical as the light streams through the ceiling. Drogarati Cave, with its impressive stalactites and stalagmites, is worth a visit.

In sum, consider Kefalonia as an alternative to the more popular Greek Islands. With its magnificent beaches, natural beauty, great food, and friendly people, you will thoroughly enjoy this off-the-beaten-track Greek island for a week or more. Best of all, there are plenty of hotels to choose from on the island.

6. Ermioni, a unique town away from the crowds in Greece

Recommended by Tanya from CanTravelWillTravel.com

Ermioni  is a hidden gem in the Peloponnese region of Greece. This picturesque harbor town is nestled on a peninsula surrounded by sea. It’s divided into three parts: the bustling ‘Limani’ side with its commercial port and harbor, the lively ‘Mandrakia’ side, and the Bisti pine forest on the tip of the peninsula. A coast road runs around the peninsular and in the centre is the old village filled with cobbled streets lined with traditional Greek houses.

Ermioni is known for its authentic Greek atmosphere and serene beauty. It’s an off-the-beaten-track Greek destination where you can immerse yourself in the local culture. Ermioni is an excellent choice for a peaceful escape, with great food, outdoor activities, and a glimpse into Greece’s rich history.

Ermioni has several highlights. Take a self-guided walking tour around the coast, and the old village. Explore the archaeological remains on the pine-covered Bisti. Swim and snorkel in the crystal-clear waters and don’t forget to try your hand at fishing and visit the busy Thursday market.

7. Voidokilia Beach, a beach destination in Greece to get you off the beaten track

Recommended by Anna & Anne from Perspektivan.de

Voidokilia Beach is a hidden gem in the Messenia region on the Peloponnese Peninsula. The beach is renowned for its breathtaking horseshoe shape and its turquoise waters.

Before you dip into the shallow waters, consider hiking up a small path that leads to the ancient Paleo Kastro castle ruins. The panoramic view from the castle is incredible, and it’s the only place to see the horseshoe shape as you are hiking up the mountain.

Voidokilia beach, avoiding tourists in Greece

To find the hiking path, follow the unpaved street that leads to the beach’s far end, where you can find a space to park your car. Please be aware that the street gets very muddy during rainfall. Many potholes on this path possibly get flooded. For bird lovers, there is also a great bird sanctuary near the beach with lots of beautiful birds to see.

Plan your visit in late summer or autumn when the weather is warm but not too hot. Voidokilia Beach is a 30-minute drive from Pylos or one hour from Kalamata, allowing you to incorporate your beach day into a day trip.

Keep in mind that the beach remains uncommercialized, so bring along essentials like sunscreen, refreshments, and snacks, as amenities are limited. There are many large trash cans, so please pack it in and pack it out.

8. Folegandros, a quiet Greek island away from the crowds

Recommended by Martina by PlacesofJuma.com

The island of Folegandros is not only beautiful but also off the typical tourist routes. It’s a great destination to go off the beaten path in Greece.

This dream island is still quiet and authentic and gives a pure Greek feeling. It belongs to the Cyclades and is best reached by ferry from Athens or Santorini. It’s recommended to stay one week in Folegandroos, especially if you want to decelerate away from the crowds in Greece.

Folegandros, on of the least touristy islands in Greece

The fascinating landscape of this small mini-island is absolutely enchanting – It is extremely rocky and has a rugged cliff. The  beaches of Folegandros  are also to fall in love with. However, the highlight is the romantic Chora, which is located on an imposing rock hundreds of meters above the sea. Here you can stroll through dreamy alleys, eat in authentic tavernas and enjoy the tranquil lifestyle.

There is also the church of the Virgin Mary, a must-see landmark of the island. It can be reached via a beautiful footpath. For a very special experience, you should visit this church in the evening, because the sunsets from there are more than spectacular.

Folegandros is an excellent destination for those who love hiking, thanks to its beautiful landscapes and intact nature. Around the island, there are numerous well-marked hiking trails that will take you to spectacular viewpoints and secluded beaches.

Folegandros, going off the beaten track in Greece

If you love adventure, you can rent a quad or a scooter and explore the island. Really worth visiting is the traditional village of Ano Meria, where you can find nice taverns and admire the landscape of the plateau.

The best time to travel is definitely the low season in April. Then you have this island all to yourself. For a vacation on Folegeandros, you will find some great accommodations on the island. Especially recommended are the Onar Suites & Villas with a beautiful pool and stunning views.

9. Amorgos, a beautiful lesser-known island in Greece

Known for its wild mountainous beauty, Amorgos is much further than the usual Cycladic island-hopping route. But it’s the perfect place to go in Greece to escape the crowds.

In this place, you will mostly only find local tourists, but the same stunning beaches and traditional Cycladic architecture that has made other islands incredibly famous – think Santorini , Paros and Naxos!

Connected by precarious winding roads carved into rugged cliffs,  Amorgos Island  comprises three main villages Chora, Aegiali, and Katapola. Chora sits in the island’s center, a cluster of whitewashed houses with charming cobblestone streets, iconic windmills, and cute restaurants. Katapola and Aegiali are the main ports of Amorgos, where the ferries dock and travelers can chill at tavernas and cafes.

The highlight of Amorgos is its ancient Monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa, built into a cliffside 1000 feet above sea level. With limited visiting hours, unwind on the small pristine shores of nearby Agia Anna Beach before hiking to this landmark.

Amorgos a hidden gem of greece

To reach Amorgos, you’ll need to ride a lengthy ferry journey from Athens, which typically takes anywhere between 5.5 to 9 hours. Due to the island’s size, renting a car is the most convenient way to get around . Alternatively, you can ask local shops about taxi transfers.

The best time to visit Amorgos is during the summer when the weather is perfect for beach activities and hiking. Even in the peak season, nothing here is crowded or sold out. Since it takes so long to get here and get around, it’s recommended to stay for at least three days. But a trip here can be easily added on top of an island-hopping itinerary in the Cyclades. There aren’t too many places to stay, so you may want to book ahead of time , just in case!

This non-touristy Greek island is the perfect place for those looking to get off the beaten track.

10. Milos, a lesser-known island in Greece

Recommended by Lauren from TheAdventureManual.com

Situated a short ferry ride south of Athens, the Cycladic island of Milos is another destination you need to visit in Greece. Although this island has become more popular in recent years, visiting in the shoulder seasons can combat the crowds. April to June and September to October are the best months to visit Milos.

Once you arrive on the island at Adamantas port, there are a few car rental places nearby to help you get around the island easier. It’s a short drive to the capital of Plaka, where most people choose to stay. There are plenty of hotels and accommodations to choose from.

Instead, consider bedding down in Pollonia for a more authentic experience. Three to five days is perfect to enjoy everything Milos has to offer with plenty of time for sunbathing guaranteed, too. Plus, there are some really great accommodations , so you can turn this into a more memorable experience!

Milos, where to go away from tourists in Greece

While you should explore the Catacombs and the Ancient Theatre of Milos during your trip, there are many things to do on this island that often fly under the radar. One example is the fisherman’s village of Firopotamos. The hike to this area takes around forty minutes and treats you to charming views of traditional blue and white buildings along the way.

Vani is another area of Milos that is overlooked. This tiny abandoned mining town is home to incredible hikes and some cool photo opportunities. Vani Beach might be slightly more difficult to reach than the ones near Plaka, taking almost an hour by car, but the dramatic views are worth the effort.

If you’re looking to experience Greece off the beaten path in the Cyclades, Milos is a great alternative to the touristy islands like Santorini , Paros or Naxos .

11. Syros, a non-touristy island in Greece’s Cyclades

Recommended by Tamara from MyElatedOdyssey.com

If you’re looking for one of the best off-the-beaten-path islands in Greece, then head to Syros. Between its rich history, relaxing beaches, and authenticity,  Syros is 100% worth a visit .

While on this lesser-known island you can visit the capital city of Ermoupoli and discover popular sites like the Town Hall and Apollon Theater. The island is also home to beautiful, golden sand beaches, with some of the best being Galissas and Kini Beach.

Syros, Greece off the beaten track

A trip to Syros is incomplete without going to Ano Syros, a historic town built on a hill to protect itself from pirates. From Ano Syros, you can also catch some of the best panoramic views of the island.

You can reach Syros by flight or ferry. Flights are only available from Athens, and they only last around 30 minutes! Ferries are available from numerous different islands, so those durations will vary.

Like other Greek islands, the best time to visit Syros will fall within the shoulder season months of May, June, September, and October. These months will still have pleasant to perfect weather conditions while benefiting from reduced costs.

Syros, Greece away from the tourists

Syros is also the capital of the Cyclades. Because of that, it remains lively throughout the entire year. That said, it’s a great place to visit in the off-season if you’re searching for an island with a reasonable degree of activity.

It’s recommended to stay in Syros for at least two to four days. This will give you enough time to do the top highlights leisurely. Be sure to book your accommodations ahead of time to have more choices.

You can also easily see it as a day trip from nearby islands. Mykonos and Tinos will be the most accessible islands to go to Syros for a day trip.

12. Tinos, another non-touristy Greek island to discover near Syros

Recommended by Alina from WorldOfLina.com

While popular Greek islands like Santorini, Mykonos, and Crete are widely recognized, their hidden gem of Tinos often goes unnoticed.

Tinos is an enchanting island tucked between the Cycladic islands of Andros and Mykonos. With its picturesque landscapes, charming villages, and serene beaches, Tinos offers a unique and tranquil escape from the tourist crowds. The perfect Greek island to get off the beaten path in the touristic Cyclades.

Getting to Tinos is easy and you have two main options. You can either take a flight to Mykonos and then catch a ferry, or you can embark on a 3-hour ferry journey from Athens.

To make the most of your Tinos experience, it’s recommended to plan for at least 4-5 days on the island. The island boasts numerous sandy and rocky beaches, perfect for unwinding in the sun. If you’re inclined to explore local culture, the island’s villages are a must-visit. You have so many places to choose from for your accommodations .

Tinos, lesser known places in Greece

One of the largest and most beautiful villages is Pyrgos, also known as Panormos, located in the northern part of the island. It’s not just a charming village but also a thriving arts center, home to many renowned Greek artists.

Another distinctive feature of Tinos is its abundance of dovecotes, white structures adorned with geometric patterns. While you can find such dovecotes on a few other Cyclades islands, Tinos outshines them all in terms of quantity.

In Tinos Town, the island’s capital, you’ll discover a multitude of excellent restaurants serving traditional Greek cuisine, such as To Koutouki tis Elenis.

Due to the “Meltemi”, Tinos is a rather windy island and the winds are especially strong during summer from the end of May to the end of September. Nevertheless, summer is considered the best time to visit Tinos, but you can also get a good portion of sun from May until the beginning of October.

13. Damouchari, a perfect town in Greece to get off the beaten track

Recommended by Annelies from TravelersAndDreamers.com

Damouchari is a lesser-known but very cute seaside settlement in the Pelion region of Thessaly on mainland Greece. It is popular among the Greeks for weekend retreats but it remains undiscovered by international tourists, preserving an authentic Greek vibe.

In 2007, Damouchari was in the spotlight for a moment as the harbor was a filming location for “Mamma Mia”. Although the majority of the movie was shot on Skopelos and Skiathos islands, some scenes featuring a wooden bridge were filmed here.

Damouchari Beach is a serene spot, ideal for yoga or meditation during sunrise. It has a mix of sand and pebbles and offers facilities like changing cabins and a taverna . Other activities include snorkeling, exploring the coastline with SUP boards or kayaks, and hiking on trails leading to picturesque beaches like Fakistra and Papa Nero. One thing you absolutely can’t miss out on are the natural rock pools a short walk from the center.

Damouchari, non touristy places in Greece

Damouchari boasts several restaurants of which Victoria Café is the absolute best. It offers a great setting overlooking the sea and a diverse menu with many vegan and vegetarian options. Another great restaurant that is a 20-minute walk away is The Beautiful Beach, located on Papa Nero Beach.

Damouchari has limited accommodation options and, during the summer months, making an advanced booking is recommended. A great place to stay nearby is Katerina Fotopoulos Rooms and Apartments, located between Papa Nero and Damouchari Beach, and Ghermaniko Guesthouse, which also owns Victoria Café, is another great choice.

Reaching Damouchari is most convenient by renting a car from Athens or Thessaloniki. While there’s an option for public transport, it’s not the most reliable.  Damouchari  is only one of the many magical places that you can find on the Pelion peninsula.

A road trip is the best way to discover this part of Greece. Allow at least two weeks to explore the eastern coast and four weeks to visit most places on the peninsula. And don’t forget to book your accommodations along the way!

No matter how long you choose to stay here, Damouchari is a perfect hidden gem in Greece worth exploring!

Damouchari, off the beaten track in greece

14. Metsovo, a small town in Greece to get off the beaten track

Recommended by Marga from Discover-Portugal.com

Metsovo is a cute town hidden in the mountains of mainland Greece. It’s located between Ioannina towards the west and the monasteries of Meteora further east. From Athens, it’s a 5-hour drive north, and from Thessaloniki, it takes 2.5 hours.

Metsovo is great in summer when you can enjoy long hikes and bike rides in the nearby landscape. But even in winter, you don’t have to sit still, as skiing opportunities are very near!

Metsovo in the winter, a non touristy place in Greece

Metsovo is relatively small, and apart from the landscape, the town doesn’t boast major sites. What you will discover are the traditions and the typical architecture in this region. From town, you enjoy beautiful views over the mountains, and from the Averoff Gardens, you can enjoy the view over Pindos National Park. What a place to read a book!

If you prefer a good glass of wine, the Katogi Averoff Winery is the place to be! You can join a guided tour and, of course, a wine tasting. Or enjoy an afternoon filled with art at the Averoff Art Gallery, where you can indulge in over 200 artworks by prominent Greek artists.

Metsovo in the summer, a lesser known place in Greece

At the Metsovo Folk Art Museum, you step back in time instead. The museum has a fantastic collection of everyday tools from previous centuries. It’s located in the 1661 Tossizza family mansion, so even the building is worth a visit!

Metsovo boasts several things to do, and you can easily visit the town for a day. But to be away from the busy cities, it’s also a popular spot to enjoy nature. Book a nice hotel and enjoy your stay! The surrounding mountains are well worth exploring! At night, you can find several cozy restaurants around the square. Try some of the best-known cheeses from the area, or try the local truffles.

15. Kastoria, a small town that is a hidden gem of Greece

Recommended by Emily from Wander-Lush.org

In the 15th century, the city of Kastoria was counted among the biggest in the Balkans. Today this small lakeside community in the north of the country could be considered a hidden gem of Greece.

Kastoria is synonymous with three things: Byzantine churches, Ottoman-era architecture, and a heritage fur trade. Mapped walking trails lead visitors through different chapters of the city’s history, with the cobbled streets of the old Doltso and Apozari Quarters being a highlight. Be sure to drop into Tsiatsiapas Mansion, a restored Ottoman-style house that now functions as a museum.

Another must-do is the Byzantine Museum of Kastoria, where dozens of resplendent icons and wooden iconostases salvaged from the city’s churches are displayed. Museum staff can help you access a few of Kastoria’s 50-odd frescoed chapels that are nowadays kept under lock and key (just ask at the ticket desk).

Kastoria, a Greece hidden gem

Kastoria is picturesquely located on a narrow promontory on Lake Orestiada, making it ideal for outdoor activities, too. Hire a bicycle from one of the rental shops in the new town and spend a few hours cycling the lakeside road, passing caves, lookout points and monasteries on the way.

For a fun experience, grab a table at Cafe 108 and sip tsipouro with the locals!

Just two hours from Thessaloniki by bus (or just a quick 60-minute dash across the border from Korce), Kastoria is perfectly located for a stopover when traveling between Greece and Albania or North Macedonia.

Kastoria is a year-round destination, but it’s particularly pleasant in autumn when the summer crowds have departed and the fall colors come to prominence. Two days is an ideal amount of time to experience the city, overnighting at a cute guest house such as Venetula’s Mansion .

16. Thessaloniki, a historic town that’s off the beaten track in Greece

Recommended by Lavina from ContinentHop.com

Thessaloniki is a lovely town in Greece, which has a rich history and scrumptious food. It’s the perfect Greek hidden gem to discover. This city is a beautiful blend of both modern and traditional. It offers wonderful historical landmarks, a lovely promenade and gorgeous sunsets.

Even though this city is known to few tourists, it has a lot to offer and you can do many things here. A   Thessaloniki itinerary  will make exploring this lovely city easy to navigate.

Explore the white tower which is Thessaloniki’s main attraction. The White Tower provides stunning views of the entire city and the Mediterranean Sea. This site also has an exhibition about the city’s Byzantine history. Visit the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki for a peek into the city’s past. You will find unique artifacts and exhibits on display here.

Thessaloniki, away from tourists in Greece

You should visit the Old Town of Thessaloniki, also known as Ano Poli (Upper Town). You can stroll through the charming cobblestone streets which are full of traditional Balkan houses.

Aristotelous Square is the city’s biggest square and is quite popular. You will witness the city’s modern and vibrant scene here. This place has many cafes and restaurants. Have a nice cup of coffee or go shopping.

Ladadika District is a lively neighborhood and one of the coolest places in Thessaloniki. It is filled with Cobblestone streets, beautiful ancient houses, and plenty of traditional food and music. This place boasts a great nightlife, arguably one of the best in Greece.

You can fly to Thessaloniki’s international airport to get here. You can also take a train or bus from all the major Greek cities.

The best visiting time in Thessaloniki would be April-June and September-October. These days have favorable weather conditions and few tourists. You can spend 3 to 5 days exploring this beautiful destination. Book a cute hotel , and enjoy your time on this hidden gem of Greece.

17. The Zagori Region, a hidden gem of Greece’s countryside

Recommended by Marjut from TheSmoothEscape.com

The Zagori region in northwestern Greece is a true Greek hidden gem and a fantastic place to experience the authentic charm of the Greek countryside. Surrounded by the picturesque Pindus mountains, the region is home to untouched nature and beautiful landscapes, making it a wonderful destination for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts.

The most famous natural attraction in the region is the spectacular Vikos Gorge. Known as the ‘Grand Canyon of Greece’, the gorge holds a Guinness World Record for being the world’s deepest gorge relative to its width. Along the bottom of the gorge runs the 13-kilometer  Vikos Gorge trail , which offers breathtaking views of the towering cliffs above.

Zagori vikos gorge, avoid tourists in Greece

Besides its natural beauty, Zagori is also home to rich history and culture. The region is known for its 46 traditional villages, collectively called Zagorohoria, where it seems as if time has stopped. Here you can find charming stone houses, narrow cobblestone streets, ancient arched bridges and a tranquil ambiance.

The best time to visit Zagori is from May to October. This is when the weather is the warmest and driest and the hiking trails are accessible. Three days is a good amount of time to spend in Zagori as it is enough to explore a few of the villages, do a hike or two and visit some scenic viewpoints. There are plenty of accommodations you can call home during your stay.

To get to Zagori, you can either drive, take a bus or fly to Ioannina Airport from Athens. The car and bus trip from Athens takes about 5 hours whereas the flight takes 1 hour.

18. Makrinitsa, one of Greece’s hidden gems in the Aegean Sea

Recommended by Milos from HappyFrogTravels.com

Greece is one of Europe’s most beautiful countries. Such a fascinating mix of great architecture, stunning landscapes, and rich culture is hard to find. What’s more, you can find all of these in off-the-beaten-track places like  Makrinitsa  in Thessaly.

Set on a slope of mighty Pelion Mountain, it’s a historic village overlooking the Aegean Sea. Though only a couple of kilometers from one of Greece’s busiest ports, it is often overlooked by tourists and travelers alike. Those few that do visit go as a day trip from Volos, which means you’ll have the whole place for yourself if you spend the night there! Luckily, there are plenty of accommodations to choose from.

Makrinitsa, a beautiful place in Greece

Makrinitsa is a dream. It hosts one of the nicest collections of traditional Ottoman houses in Greece. We are talking about the white houses with protruding upper floors and stone shingle tiles. These charming houses are all over the village, and you can even stay in one.

Makrinitsa’s highlights include its magnificent main square with a 19th-century fountain, historic churches, and two museums. Apart from stunning architecture, the village is known for its outstanding views. Hike to the top of the mountain, and you’ll be rewarded with some of the most spectacular views you’ve ever seen.

It is easy to reach Makrinitsa. You should fly, or take a train or a bus to Volos. Once there, you can take a suburban bus to the village. Most tourists visit in summer, so it gets more crowded. We suggest visiting in spring or fall. The temperatures are pleasant, prices are more affordable, and there are fewer tourists. Remember to spend at least a night or two! You have a ton of cute hotels to choose from!

19. Poros, a non-touristy Greek island worth visiting

Recommended by Eleanor of  ElevateYourEscapes.com

Poros, Greece is a charming little island in the Saronic Gulf. It features gorgeous landscapes, historic sights, and is surrounded by beautiful clear blue waters. It’s the perfect spot for a serene getaway.

Explore Poros Town, at the heart of the island. This is where you’ll get off the boat. You’ll see narrow cobblestone streets, with vibrant decor. Local shops, cafes, and tavernas line the main strip along the waterfront.

Visitors can hike or bike the island’s scenic trails for great panoramic views. Additionally, The Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi, is a nice climb in town. It offers incredible panoramic views of the island.

Poros, off the beaten track in Greece

Poros has an array of stunning beaches, including Love Bay, Askeli Beach, and Neorio Beach. Kayaking, snorkeling, and sailing adventures can be booked in town, too. History lovers will enjoy the Archaeological Museum, which showcases ancient artifacts from Poros’ past.

Visitors will arrive by boat into the heart of town. The best way to get there is the public ferry, departing from Athens/ Pireaus port. The ride is about 2.5 hours. Some day trip operators sail into Poros on a quick stop, as well, but it’s best to spend at least an overnight to see more of this tranquil island.

The best time to visit Poros is during the spring (April to June) or fall (September to October) when the weather is pleasant, but not too hot, and the crowds have departed for summer season.

20. Corinth, a unique coastal town near Athens to help you get off the beaten path

Recommended by Michael from TimeTravelTurtle.com

Just 80 kilometers west of Athens, the city of Corinth is easy to reach but often overlooked by visitors. Those who do come here tend to pop in just for a short day trip, but this coastal hidden gem of Greece has plenty to offer and makes a nice break for a night or two.

The millennia of fascinating history is without doubt the highlight. One of the best  things to do in Corinth  is climb up the fortress-like Acrocorinth that has been perched on top of a hill since the 7th century BC, renovated by successive rulers right up until the Ottomans. Near the base of the hill is another highlight, Ancient Corinth, which has the remains of temples and markets of a powerful city where Saint Paul famously preached the new Christian faith in the 1st century AD.

Corinth, Greece off the beaten path near Athens

But stay in the modern town for more than a day and you’ll also start to appreciate the seaside atmosphere with casual beach clubs and waterfront dining. The nearby town of Loutraki has thermal springs and more places to swim, there are walks up into the hills to see monasteries with centuries of heritage, and you can even bungee jump over the Corinth Canal!

There’s an easy direct train from Athens to Corinth but the sights are quite far apart so it may be better to rent a car for a visit. Because of the proximity to the capital, the city gets busy during national holiday periods but is fairly laid back the rest of the time. The warmer months are good for swimming but with so many things to see, it’s worth a trip any time of year.

21. Stavros, an escape from the touristy town of Chania on the island of Crete

Recommended by Adriana at  Wanderlicious.co.uk

If you’re the type who loves to discover those hidden gems that haven’t been splashed all over your friends’ social feeds, then you have to check out Stavros in Crete. It’s just around the corner from the most popular city of Chania.

Stavros is a laid-back little village that sits pretty on the Akrotiri peninsula, and it’s the perfect antidote to those packed tourist traps that you sometimes find in the city.

Picture this: a laid-back beach that curves around a bay so calm you’d think it’s a lake. There’s also this jutting, impressive mountain right by the shore that you might recognize from the classic film “Zorba the Greek.”

Crete off the beaten path in Greece

When you’re not soaking up the sun on Stavros Beach, you can hit the trails and hike up the hills for some killer views – it’s the kind of place where you can really connect with the local vibe. And if you’re into a bit of history, the Monastery of Agia Triada is just a short drive away and there are many wineries to try too.

Getting to Stavros is a breeze, just a quick drive, taxi or bus ride from Chania, and the journey’s got all those awesome coastal views you want from a Greek island trip. You’ll want to come between late spring and early fall to catch the best weather.

Sure, you could do Stavros as a day trip from Chania, but why rush it? Stay a couple of days at least. There are tons of amazing accommodations to choose from . It’s the kind of spot that’s perfect for slowing down, kicking back, and just living that Greek island life without the crowds. Spend a few days here, and you’ll be feeling like a local in no time.

15 Less Touristy & Underrated Greek Islands To Visit

15 Underrated & Less Touristy Greek Islands To Visit

Best Less Touristy Islands in Greece to Visit

With over 6,000 (well, 227 inhabited) Greek Islands to choose from, why not take the road less traveled? Most first-time visitors to Greece head to Santorini , an island famous for its sunsets and luxury honeymoon hotels , or Mykonos , a prime spot for partying. The call to these islands is understandable — most visions of Greece are Santorini’s whitewashed, blue-domed buildings overlooking the sea.

But there are downsides. Santorini is one of the most expensive spots in Greece to visit, and you can admire those whitewashed buildings and epic sunsets from hundreds of other islands at a much more affordable price without the crowds. Mykonos often gets so busy in the summer months that traffic on the island’s main roads comes to a dead stop.

underrated places to visit in greece

Important: How to Navigate Greece’s Less Touristy and Underrated Islands

Navigating Greece’s less touristy and underrated islands may require a bit more planning and research compared to visiting popular destinations, but the experience of exploring these hidden gems can be incredibly rewarding. Before setting off on your adventure, spend some time researching the less touristy islands you’d like to visit (read below or view the above Table of Contents). Take into account factors such as travel time, ferry connections, and the availability of accommodations. Plan your itinerary to ensure you have enough time to fully explore each island and make the most of your trip.

Best Greek Airports to Fly Into

The best airport to fly into before getting to Greece’s more underrated and less touristy islands is Athens International Airport (Eleftherios Venizelos Airport, code: ATH) . This airport serves as the primary gateway to Greece and offers numerous international and domestic connections. From Athens, you can take domestic flights to smaller airports on some of the islands or board ferries to reach your desired destination.

Alternatively, Thessaloniki International Airport (Makedonia Airport, code: SKG) in Northern Greece is another option for travelers, particularly if you plan to visit islands in the Northern Aegean or Ionian Sea. However, the number of domestic flights and ferry connections available from Thessaloniki is usually less frequent compared to those from Athens. You can compare flight prices into either airport right here.

When it comes to transportation, ferries are the most common and cost-effective means of getting around between islands. Research the ferry schedules ahead of time and book your tickets in advance, especially during peak season when routes may be busy. Keep in mind that ferry schedules can change due to weather conditions, so be prepared to be flexible with your plans. Domestic flights and private yacht or sailboat charters are also options for some islands, although they may be more expensive.

For an authentic experience, consider staying in locally-owned accommodations like guesthouses, rooms for rent, or small boutique hotels. Not only will this support the local economy, but you’ll also get a genuine taste of Greek hospitality. Be sure to book your accommodations in advance, particularly during the high season when availability may be limited. Contact the Winetraveler travel agency directly if you’d like us to handle the logistics for you.

During your stay, take the time to engage with locals and ask for recommendations on the best places to visit, eat, and explore. They can often provide valuable insights into lesser-known attractions, hidden beaches, or traditional tavernas that may not be on the typical tourist radar. Don’t be afraid to venture off the beaten path and explore the unique landscapes, history, and culture that these underrated islands have to offer.

Best Less Touristy & Underrated Greek Islands to Visit This Year

Worth noting: Just because they are less-touristy, these islands in Greece are still just as beautiful, if not more so.

Ancient volcanic rock formations dot the island of Milos.

A volcanic island part of the Cyclades, Milos has a budding culinary scene. Some family-owned restaurants such as Sirocco on Paleochori Beach use the volcanic landscape to their advantage. Chefs bury food in clay pots in the soil which is then heated by the underground geothermic springs. After a naturally-cooked meal, enjoy the sand and pebbles of Paleochori beach, backed by rocky cliffs marbled with volcanic amber colors. And don’t forget about the popular Sarakiniko beach, famous for its sleek white rock formations jutting out over the sea.

From its paradisiacal islands to its countless ancient archaeological sites, Greece is a place unlike any other. But while tourists often flock to popular locations such as the Acropolis of Athens and the island of Santorini, it’s just as worthwhile to go off the beaten path and explore some less crowded, yet equally awe-inspiring locations. If you think you’ve seen all that Greece has to offer then think again, as these hidden gems will blow you away with their rich history and scenic beauty.

Temple of Isis at ancient ruins at Delos island in Greece.

In Greek mythology, the tiny island of Delos is considered the birthplace of Apollo, the god of music, poetry, and art. So it’s only appropriate that this beautiful island paradise looks as if it came straight out of a painting. Nestled within the Cyclades archipelago of the Aegean Sea, Delos historically welcomed settlers as far back as the 3rd millennium BCE, a time period from which many archeological relics remain. Today, the island is uninhabited due to its remote location, though it’s that inaccessibility that makes Delos such an appealing destination.

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is accessible by a number of regional ferries . Upon arrival, there are countless sites to see, turning the whole island into an open-air museum. Notable structures found throughout Delos’ mere 1.3 square miles of area include the remnants of nine historic marble lions, as well as pieces of a once-colossal statue dedicated to Apollo himself. More can be learned about the history of Delos at the island’s tiny archaeological museum , which features artifacts including vibrant mosaics from the House of Dionysus. Other spots to see include the remains of the Temple of Isis from the 2nd century BCE, and the Ancient Theater of Delos from the 3rd century BCE — the latter of which was once capable of holding 5,000 spectators.

Temple of Poseidon

Poseidon Temple at Cape Sounion near Athens, Greece

The Temple of Poseidon dates to between 444 and 440 BCE and is located at Sounion, a once-sacred site 40 miles outside of Athens. Given that Poseidon is the god of the sea, it’s fitting that this temple lies atop a cliffside vista overlooking the sparkling Aegean waters. The temple's construction was spearheaded by ancient Greek statesman Pericles, the man behind the Parthenon. Even with this connection, the Temple of Poseidon remains a far less frequented tourist attraction.

At its peak, the Temple of Poseidon boasted 34 Doric columns composed of locally-sourced marble, of which 15 columns remain today. Since the site was thoroughly excavated in the early 20th century, the temple turned up many historic carvings and handmade pottery, all of which hold tremendous archaeological significance. Today, the temple can be easily accessed by bus or car, and is well worth the 90-minute journey from Athens’ city center.

Aerial view of Kythira with bay of water, harbor, beach, mountains and green nature.

Located just south of the Peloponnese peninsula is the tiny, idyllic escape known as Kythira . Given its lack of natural harbors, the island played little significance in ancient political times, though it was inhabited as far back as the Minoan Period (3000 to 1200 BCE). Kythira is considered the mythological birthplace of Aphrodite, the god of beauty, and was home to an ancient cult dedicated to the mighty goddess. Over time, Kythira served as a Spartan outpost and endured countless invasions, though it has since transitioned into its current status as an untouched island paradise.

The many residents of Kythira live in beautiful white houses that climb up the island’s rugged terrain, culminating in the Castle of Chora at Kythira’s highest point. This 13th-century fortress was able to see ships approaching from three different seas: the Ionian, Aegean, and Cretan. There are multiple museums chronicling the island’s archaeological and Byzantine history, as Kythira was part of the Byzantine Empire in the 7th century. Once you’ve learned all there is to know about the past, it’s worth exploring Kythira’s many natural wonders, from caves to grottos and sandy beaches where you can spend hours basking under the Mediterranean sun.

Theatre of Dionysus

Stone amphitheater overlooking Athens.

If you’re visiting the nearby Acropolis, then a quick jaunt over to the Theatre of Dionysus is well worth your time. Located in central Athens, this performance space was the first theater of its kind, and capable of accommodating 17,000 spectators at its peak. Famous ancient Greek playwrights brought their works to be performed on site including Aeschylus and Sophocles, and the theater is considered by many to be the birthplace of Greek drama.

The theater was dedicated in ancient times to Dionysus, the god of ecstasy and wine, and it was during festivals in his honor that many plays were performed here. Tragically, the theater fell into disrepair during Byzantine rule but was rediscovered in 1765 and later restored throughout the 19th century. Today, visitors can bask in the aura that emanates throughout this ancient site, imagining what it was once like to witness the many dramatic works that were performed here.

Samaria Gorge

Log walkway over water through narrow trail through cliffs.

As the largest and most populous Greek island, Crete as a whole isn’t exactly what you’d call a hidden gem. But contained within Crete is the Samaria Gorge , a World Biosphere Reserve that truly embraces being “off the beaten path.” With spectacular geological value and unparalleled biodiversity, Samaria Gorge is a must-visit for nature lovers, animal lovers, and hikers alike, as the gorge’s steepness and inaccessibility have left the terrain largely untouched.

Samaria Gorge is perhaps best known for a hiking trail that descends from an elevation of 4,035 feet down to sea level. The trail includes more challenging portions such as “the Gates” — a narrow stretch that’s only 13 feet wide and is surrounded by looming cliffs stretching hundreds of feet in the air. For those more interested in fauna, the trail is also home to endemic species such as the cliff-climbing Creten Agrimi goat, rare bearded vultures, and horseshoe bats. Upon arriving at the end, be sure to gaze out across the water toward the island of Gavdos, which denotes the southernmost point in all of Europe.

Tower of the Winds

underrated places to visit in greece

Athens’ Tower of the Winds is a fascinating archaeological relic, as it’s considered to be the world’s first ever meteorological station. The tower was constructed between 100 and 50 BCE by astronomer Andronicus of Cyrrhus, and it was originally built to track time. The Tower of the Winds once included a water clock , and over time it even developed into serving as a church’s bell tower.

The building itself features a unique shape, ascending 42 feet into the air with eight sides — each of which represents a distinct direction on a compass. Furthermore, the tower holds incredible archeological significance as its stone roof is one of the few roofs of an ancient building to remain intact today. Found throughout the tower include relics from the many cultures that occupied the site over the course of history, from ancient frescoes to Arabic calligraphy dating to the late Ottoman period. The Tower of the Winds was recently restored in 2015, and now welcomes visitors interested in the history of both Greece and meteorology.

Sharing is caring!

Even in 2024, there are plenty of hidden gems in Greece, that are just as accessible and arguably even more beautiful than the popular spots. It’s almost hard to believe right? especially considering how much travel has bounced back since the event we will not talk about! 🙂

Greece is a stunning country. It’s also super diverse. But, if you’re picturing yourself wandering through a pretty Greek town with the sun’s rays on your back and the sound of the ocean in your ears, then you might not want the babble of other people that comes with many of Greece’s hotspots.

Yes, I’m talking about you Santorini and Mykonos! You might be gorgeous, but you’re hardly a hidden gem these days! Instead, you might want to consider some of the places I’m about to spill the beans on below!

12 Breathtaking Hidden Gems Of Greece

Greece is so full of hidden islands each with its own unique culture and history that makes it distinct from all the others. There are islands with less than 5,000 inhabitants, stunning scenery, authentic Greek history, and virtually no tourism.

Some fo teh best hidden gems in Greece are it's wonderful beaches

So, if you’re looking for some of the most underrated Greek islands , you’re in luck. There are quite a few unique places to visit in Greece and spots that offer a quieter getaway without sacrificing the beautiful Greek culture and delicious food.

These are the most beautiful 12 Greek hidden gems.

Despite being the third-largest island in the Dodecanese, Kos is one of the quieter islands in Greece and a wonderful hidden gem. There are plenty of small fishing villages, quaint towns and ancient ruins for history buffs to explore, as well as tasty fresh fish dishes perfect for foodies.

Kos is one of the top underrated Greek Islands

There are some gorgeous beaches (like Paradise Beach and Lambi Beach). Plus, the island’s close proximity to the nearby volcanic Greek island Nisyros along with the European hidden gem Kalymnos makes wonderful day trips.

Kos is full also of historical wonders. Walking through the Asklepion and Agora will show you a glimpse into Greek history, while walks in Plaka Forest or explorations at thermal hot springs throughout eastern Kos offer a unique Greek experience.

2. Nafplion

One of my favourite destinations in Greece is easily Nafplio. This charming Peloponnese coastal town has been described as one of the most romantic places on Earth (perfect for a Greek couples getaway ), and it’s an Instagrammers paradise.

The Old Town is full of cobbled streets, traditional tavernas and a picturesque harbour. It’s perfect for your next trip if you’re looking to take some stunning photographs or just want to experience one of the hidden gems in Greece.

Nafplion is a wonderful secret place to visit in Greece

It’s so easy to get there too. Airport options include Kalamata or Athens , but you can also hire a car and drive there if you fancy adding a charming European road trip charm to your holiday plans. We drove from Athens to this quaint little town and were able to take a detour to a few other wonderful sites like Delphi and Corinth on the way.

If Greek history fascinated you, then you’ll love the history of Nafplion. This gorgeous town is the former capital of Greece and has been around since ancient times.

nafplio greece

Be sure to explore the historical sites of the town while you’re there. The most famous among them is Bourtzi Fortress which can be visited by boat from the port. Akronafiia Fortress’ is also a great option.

Its stunning location overlooking the bay provides wonderful views across the ocean and the mountainside. There’s also a fascinating archaeological museum.

✅ Discover the best places to stay in Nafplion

Hardly anyone has ever heard of Tinos. Tinos is an underrated yet beautiful island between the two Cycladic islands Andros and Mykonos. Despite its stunning landscapes, enchanting villages, and serene beaches, Tinos is a non-touristy and quiet island and one of the best unique places to visit in Greece.

There are many options on how to reach Tinos. Either you take a flight to Mykonos and then hop on a ferry. Or start from Athens and take a 3-hour ferry ride.

Visit Tinos

Numerous rocky or sandy beaches are perfect if you want to have a relaxing day. If you prefer to experience the local life, head to some of the many villages on the island.

One of the largest and definitely one of the most beautiful ones is Pyrgos, also called Panormos, in the northern part of the island. The village is a real arts centre, being the home place of many famous Greek artists.

Another very typical thing about Tinos is the great number of dovecotes located all over the island. These white buildings with geometrical patterns can be found on a few other Cyclades islands but neither of them has as many as Tinos.

4. Spinalonga Island

A must-visit place to add to your Crete itinerary is the intriguing Spinalonga Island, located less than half a mile from Crete’s northeastern coast.

Throughout the years, this piece of history was ruled by the Venetians and Ottomans until the Cretan revolt in the late 19th century. If it’s not your first time hearing about Spinalonga, you probably know it from the best-selling book, ‘The Island’ by Victoria Hislop.

Spinalonga Island

It introduced the world to the island’s history as a leper colony in the first half of the 20th century. This made it a rather popular tourist attraction, especially since it was one of the last active colonies in Europe (the last inhabitants left the island in 1962).

To get to the island, you’ll need to take a short boat ride from either Plaka or Elounda. But since these small towns are not so conveniently reachable by public transport, you might want to consider booking a day tour. This usually includes a few more stops along the way.

Although it is quite small, when exploring the island, you’ll get to see its old Venetian fortress, wander through the remains of the leper colony, and admire the scenic views of the entire Elounda harbour. It is an unforgettable experience and one of the most underrated Greek islands.

5. Kalymnos

Located just off of Turkey’s southwest coast , this Aegean island is full of natural beauty, a rich history, culture, and delicious food. It’s only about 20 kilometres from Rhodes but is definitely one of the hidden gems in Greece as it’s nowhere near as known to travellers.

It’s famous for its beautiful white-sand beaches and clear blue waters. But there are so many other things to do while you’re there including exploring ancient Greek ruins, castles, and museums.

It’s also great for an active Greek holiday as there are many hiking trails and paths for everyone’s tastes. Or if you prefer something more adventurous, you could try mountain biking through the forests and scenic hillsides.

Kalymnos is a gorgeous Greek hidden gem

The people of Kalymnos are traditionally fishermen, sailors and sponge divers. You get a real taste for authentic Greece while you’re there – as well as a taste for delicious fresh seafood.

Kalymnos is the perfect island for anyone who loves to travel. Some of the most beautiful beaches in Greece are lined up along the coastline of this small island and there is never a shortage of adventures to be had.

From hiking trails to pristine waterfalls and ancient ruins, you will never run out of things to do.

✅ Discover the best places to stay in Kalymnos

Naxos is one of the lesser-known islands in Greece. It is often overlooked compared to the popular and busy Santorini and Mykonos. However, a visit to this large island will reward travellers with amazing scenic views, soft sands, bright blue ocean and much fewer crowds.

From Athens , it’s accessible via a short flight or a 5-hour ferry ride. Those who opt for the ferry will step foot onto land at Naxos old town, which is also known as Chora.

If you follow the cobbled streets, white buildings, and winding alleyways, you’ll discover small restaurants and boutiques nestled into the stone.

Naxos

If you’re visiting in the summer months, then buses are available to get around the island. Alternatively, you can rent an ATV from one of the many rental hire places if you’d prefer to explore at your own pace.

Naxos has some of the best beaches in Greece including the gorgeous and secluded Plaka and Agios Prokopios. Make sure to also walk across from Old Town to see the ancient Portara monument, which is a popular sunset spot.

In the middle of the island is the delightful Halki Village, where you’ll find picturesque, bougainvillaea-lined alleyways, and colourful buildings.

Easily one of the unique places to visit in Greece, there is much to see and do in beautiful Naxos. Plus, you can visit without the crowds at the more famous islands in the Cyclades, making it a great option for your next trip to Greece.

7. Antiparos

Antiparos is a beautiful and underrated Greek island in the Southern Aegean Sea. It has very close proximity to Paros – in fact, the nearest airport to reach Antiparos is in Paros.

You can take a flight to Paros and then a seven-minute ride to Antiparos. It is known to be a small and less-rushed island for a calmer escape and there is a lot to enjoy during your trip.

You can experience adventurous activities like diving and swimming at the beautiful beaches along the coastline. You can also visit Camping Antiparos to enjoy a seaside campground stay at a maximum cost of €8 per night.

Antiparos is one of the best hidden gems in Greece

The best times to visit Antiparos and experience these activities are April -June and September- October . The weather in Greece at this time is moderate and you won’t hit the school holiday rush.

The island is mostly crowded during late June and early September. Therefore you might also find Antiparos hotels more expensive or booked up altogether. Instead, you can book a stay in Paros and visit the island Antiparos as a day trip – the ferry is only 7 minutes after all!

Apart from that, do not miss grabbing regional delicacies, especially the freshly sourced fish, at one of the popular restaurants, Captain Pipinos.

The island of Sifnos in Greece is a charming little hidden gem in Greece, overshadowed by its more famous neighbours in the Cyclades group.

Whereas other islands can get crowded in the summer, Sifnos retains its small island charm and laid-back atmosphere. Plus, it’s the same look as the other Greek islands – white-washed buildings, small villages, sandy beaches and a beautiful blue Mediterranean sea.

Located in the West Cyclades, Sifnos is accessible only by ferry. It’s easy to get to the island after a visit to Athens by taking a ferry directly from Piraeus to the port town of Kamares in Sifnos. If you fancy island hopping, you can jump on a ferry to other Greek islands too, including Santorini.

Stifnos is one of the best places to visit in Greece

Sifnos is well-known for its food thanks to a local chef who wrote the first well-known Greek cookbook back in the early 20th century. The local speciality in Sifnos is skepastaria . It involves chickpeas and is still made in ceramic pots as it has been done for centuries.

If you need to work off all the good food, there are plenty of hiking trails in Sifnos – most of which are regarded as easy or moderate. Of course, take lots of water because an easy trail can become difficult quickly under the bright Greek sun.

Sifnos is perfect for people seeking a picture-perfect island escape for simple pleasures like good food and an afternoon nap in the sun. Plus, as one of the top hidden gems of Greece, the island is far from dull. There are plenty of small cafes and bars in Apollonia, the capital of Sifnos.

9. Samos

Samos is much less known compared to more famous islands. Many of the beaches on this secret Greek island will be wild and empty even in July & August . Perfect for chilling out and drinking juice (the local Gia…giamas is absolutely amazing).

However, Samos isn’t just beaches and cocktails – although most of the beaches are free and easily reachable. You can also explore the mountains, hike through lush forests, explore tunnels and even take a day trip to Turkey .

Samos is a great hidden gems in Greece

But if you do love Greek beaches (who doesn’t), Potami Beach, in the northern part of the island is highly recommended. It’s a massive beach, heart-shaped and absolutely stunning.

Just before Potami Beach, you’ll find the small town of Karlovasi. This is one of the most wonderful hidden gems in Greece and an absolute must-see. Some years back it hosted a street art festival and the murals are still there to be seen, some are very impressive.

The traditional Greek food is also stunning in Karlovasi. You’ll find some very good restaurants near the harbour or in the city centre, and make sure to try the local octopus dish as it’s utterly delicious.

✅ Discover the best places to stay in Samos

Step back in time to Kasos island, one of the prettiest Greek hidden gems, which is relatively untouched by tourism.

Kasos is the southernmost island in the Dodecanese and lies just east of Crete. It is a rugged island with traditional villages and the picturesque old port of Bouka, which is well worth visiting to enjoy fresh fish.

There are lovely beaches for lazy days and it is fun to hop on a boat to the islet of Armathia which has some absolutely stunning beaches .

Kasos, Greece

When you are exploring Kasos, visit the dairy of the Vonapati family, near Ayia Marina, as it is where the different island cheeses are made.

Popular dishes in Kassian cuisine include almirotiri, and sitaka which are all made with sheep and goat’s milk cheese. Another speciality is soupiopilafo which is a rice dish cooked with fresh squid ink. A number of the local dishes have Egyptian roots as many islanders left Kasos to work in Alexandria.

A lovely place to stay is the comfortable Theoxenia Apartments, in the village of Panagia, a 15-minute walk from Bouka. Kasos can be reached by ferry from Athens , Rhodes , or Crete and by air from Athens and Rhodes.

11. Thassos

Thassos is one of the northernmost and probably lushest Greek islands. It’s definitely one of the most unique places to visit in Greece. Thassos has a lot of beautiful, natural gems, and historically important sites to offer.

For example, there’s the island’s capital city Limenas where you can find an old amphitheatre overlooking the new harbour. Another historical site not to miss is the archaeological museum which has many old artefacts to admire.

Thassos is a wonderful unique place to visit in Greece

The old harbour is a wonderful place to take a stroll and enjoy the relaxing atmosphere of the small city. Further south on the island, you can find the ancient marble quarry of Alyki. It’s really fascinating to learn more about the techniques people used to get marble more than 1200 years ago.

Moreover, there are some old ruins of a church on the peninsula. Only a few kilometres from Alyki is the Archangel Michael Monastery located on a cliff above the sea. It’s a very peaceful, quiet place and more than 700 years old.

If you want the best 360-degree view of the island, climb up the highest peak of Thassos – Mount Ipsarion. You can either take an organized tour or walk up there starting from Potamia. No matter what option you choose, the view from up there is simply breathtaking.

12. Pelion Peninsula

The Pelion Peninsula is another of the gorgeous hidden gems in Greece that is well worth a visit. This stunning area has very few crowds and in some places, exclusively locals or domestic visitors. This alone gives the Pelion Peninsula a huge appeal.

This is a great place to explore the great outdoors or dine on delicious Greek food. If you love being active while travelling, you’ll thoroughly enjoy a sea kayaking trip along the Pelion coast exploring sea caves or the chance to go hiking.

The scenery is incredible in this region of Greece. Expect to find turquoise waters, lush greenery and rocky cliffsides. In the area around Mount Pelion, in the northern part of the peninsula, you’ll find rock caves, quiet streams, and even waterfalls where you can take a dip and cool off after a hot day.

Pelion Peninsula is a one of the most beautiful hidden gems in Greece

For a more laid-back holiday, you can spend days lounging on the white sand beaches. The beaches at Agios Ioannis, Chorefto, and Potistika are must-sees and gorgeous hidden gems in Greece.

Since food is such a big theme on the Pelion Peninsula, it’s a great idea to take a cooking class while you’re there. The one at Karaiskos Farm is very impressive.

This organic farm produces lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, and they will teach you how to make tasty regional dishes. The recipes were a great souvenir of the Pelion Peninsula.

Which Greek island is the least touristy?

Well, if we were to go by annual visits, then Skopelos would be an easy winner. Skopelos was once called “the forgotten island” because there are so few people who live on this gorgeous piece of land. It’s only inhabited by only 4,696 residents which means that you’ll have a lot more space than anywhere else in Greece! It’s also one of the greenest islands in the country.

Skopelos is one of the best hidden gems in Greece

However, if you’re looking for a Greek island that is ideal for budget travellers and nature lovers, then Ikaria might be the perfect place for you.

Ikaria Island is one of the least-visited hidden-gem Greek islands. It’s not overrun with tourists like some of its neighbours. Located 10 miles southwest of Samos, the coastlines are beautiful and there are plenty of opportunities for hiking through the nearby forests.

Ikaria Greece

This beautiful island is one of the most unique places to visit in Greece. With only about 9000 inhabitants on this small island, it still retains its authentic Greek culture as well as many traditional customs from ancient times.

Final Thoughts on the Most Beautiful Hidden Gems in Greece

Greece is the perfect destination for anyone who loves to travel. It’s a beautiful, diverse country with an abundance of amazing sights and activities.

You can find some of the best food on earth there, visit ancient ruins and explore incredible natural scenery. But in many places, (like Athens , Mykonos, and Lindos in Rhodes ), you’ll also find large crowds.

So, if you’re looking for a peaceful Greek escape, I hope the destinations above have inspired you to visit some of Greece’s less-heard-of spots. They truly are worth it, trust me! And, they might even make your trip to Greece much more enjoyable.

The Most Underrated Places in Greece

While it's all too easy to wax lyrical about the white domes of Santorini and the legendary beach clubs of Mykonos, there's far more to Hellas than its two famous islands. From lesser-known villages where the black wine flows to an overlooked city in plain view, these are (in our opinion) the most underrated places in Greece.

underrated places to visit in greece

Recognize those steep cobbled lanes and sunny marina? Picturesque Skopelos, r eachable by ferry from nearby Skiathos, stood in as the fictional Greek island of Kalokairi—w here Meryl Streep and Amanda Seyfried danced and sang in the original Mamma Mia! film. The beautiful main town is a cascade of Byzantine-era monasteries and whitewashed buildings with orange tiled roofs that tumble down to the water's edge. Spend your time walking the island's hiking trails edged with walnut trees or bathing in the sea at its pebbly but utterly serene beaches. ( Kastani , on the western coast, was made movie-famous an d is the only one on the island that gets crowded).

underrated places to visit in greece

This rugged, 75-square-mile Aegean isle just north of Mykonos remains far more under the radar than its more famous Cycladic neighbors—but there's much to discover here, including a burgeoning food scene (think small-scale beekeepers producing local heather honey) and rolling vineyards like Domaine de Kalathas, which produce natural wine. The gravely sands of Livada Beach may not be the softest on your feet, but you’ll find few crowds and spectacularly clear waters perfect for swimming. Lodgings are of the bed-and-breakfast and inn variety. Our favorite is  Crossroads Inn in the hillside village of Tripotamos, which has its own terraced vineyard and offers a delightfully authentic experience.

Athens, Greece

Yes, you read it right: for a nation whose islands attract the bulk of its visitors, Greece’s capital remains one of the country’s—if not Europe's—most overlooked destinations. Visitors tend to tick off a quick visit to the Parthenon before catching a ferry for the Cyclades, but all of that is changing. Now that the financial crisis is in the rear-view mirror, Athens is finally enjoying a cultural moment. You can feel that new creative energy at spots like Six D.o.g.s. , a trendy café and art space down an alley in the buzzing neighborhood of Monastiraki, and the  National Museum of Contemporary Art , which opened to much fanfare in 2016. When the sun comes calling, head to Astir Beach, just out of town along the Athens Riviera, where well-heeled Athenians soak up the sun and linger over long seafood lunches at stylish spots like Nice N Easy Seaside .

Kythnos, Greece

You won’t find even a fraction of Santorini's omnipresent Instagram crowds on the island of Kythnos—the first stop on the Western Cyclades ferry route after you depart the port of Piraeus. It’s well worth your while to hop off and explore: we suggest hiring a scooter for a leisurely tour that takes in the island's healing thermal springs in the village of Loutra before checking out the whitewashed village of Messaria, which is full of stately mansions and domed cave houses. After building up an appetite, stop by any one of the seaside tavernas around the island ( Byzantio is a favorite), which are popular with locals and the sailing set. There are some wonderful beaches to explore, too, including the long, sandy stretch known as Agios Dimitrios on the island’s south side.

underrated places to visit in greece

Thanks to its rather remote location in the Northern Aegean, Lemnos offers a delightfully quiet escape compared to the busy islands of southern Greece. The hilltop Castle of Myrina sits above the main town of the same name, which rambles languorously across two bays. You can spend your days learning to kite surf on Keros Beach, where Surf Club Keros gives lessons. (They also offer an onsite spa and glamping tents if you wish to stay the night.) For a more upscale experience, check out Varos Village , a formerly dilapidated town that's been reimagined as an elegant resort sporting villas and suites with stunning sea views.

Ioannina, Greece

For something different, take a break from Greece's magical sea islands and explore inland Lake Pamvotida and the town of Ioannina, about five hours northwest of Athens. Many a Grecian novelist and poet hails from this town, which is also known for the works of its brilliant silversmiths as well as its imposing castle. Built in 528 B.C., it remains the oldest Byzantine fortress in all of Greece. Just a few streets away (and within a short stroll of the lake), you'll find  Hotel Antique , a charming sleep decorated with Persian rugs and works by local artists. For dinner, you can't go wrong with  Mpoukia Mpoukia , a popular restaurant for meze best washed down with a glass of local wine.

Paxos, Greece

The Ionian Islands' close proximity to Italy lends a uniquely Italian twist to their Grecian local culture. To get off the beaten path (i.e. beyond Corfu), set your sights on Paxi, the smallest in the archipelago where underwater caves, rolling green hills, and beaches that slide into the shoreline like fjords harbor much in the way of adventure. Actually comprised of two islands (Paxos and Antipaxos), Paxi is riddled with olive groves and scenic villages tucked into pine forests, all criss-crossed by hiking trails. Sample the local “black wine” from small, family-owned vineyards in Antipaxos, then take a dip in the water at Orkos Beach (one of the most beautiful sands in the Ionians). If you're visiting in the summer, mark your calendar for the many local music festivals that take place throughout both islands.

Antiparos, Greece

If you’re looking to get as far away from Mykonos's vibrant nightlife and social scene as you can, consider Antiparos, another underrated island in the Cyclades swirl to the north of Santorini and just off the southern shore of Paros. Here, it’s all about the simple life, where even celebrities like Madonna and Tom Hanks come to fly under the radar. The main town is centered around a 15th-century Venetian castle, and further afield, there are caves to explore. Stay in town at the minimalistic Kastro Antiparos , a cozy hotel just a short stroll from the harbor that comes with a pool and sea views.

Folegandros

Located on the southern edge of the Cyclades, the rocky island of Folegandros has been called the most Greek of all of them. The main village of Chora has often been referred to as the most beautiful town in the Cyclades and, with Santorini just to the southeast, that’s saying a lot. Most of the island’s beaches are accessible by boat only, and local companies offer tours to shuttle you to remote caves and coves. The luxe Anemi Hotel , a short walk from a pretty, pebbled beach, ticks all the boxes thanks to its gorgeous infinity pool and high-design suites with private pools overlooking the sea.

The 6 Most Underrated Destinations in Greece

underrated places to visit in greece

Are you traveling to Greece but wish to avoid massive crowds? Travel off the usual road and discover the most underrated destinations to visit in Greece.

Greece is famous for its stunning beaches and gorgeous islands, and it’s one of the most popular destinations to visit for every type of traveler. In fact, Greece often wins awards as the top travel destination of the year, thanks to luxurious hotels , resorts , and even flight routes and its ongoing support of the cruise industry.

However, thanks to the country’s beauty, millions of travelers arrive in Athens and famous islands such as Mykonos and Santorini every summer. Greece’s capital and islands can get flooded by travelers. It can often be overwhelming, especially considering people got unused to massive crowds thanks to Coronavirus.

That’s why, when it comes to Greece , try to think outside the box. The country has hundreds of islands and an expansive mainland with natural wonders such as mountains, marine parks, vineyards, and historical monuments.

For alternatives to popular spots, why not consider one of the more underrated destinations in Greece instead.

1. kastellorizo.

You probably have never heard of Kastellorizo , but this tiny island, also known as Megisti, deserves to be on this list. Located closer to Turkey than Greece, the island’s beauty will captivate you. Explore its beautiful harbor, where the sun shines down on colorful neoclassical buildings scattered along the seaside and immerse into the careless, peaceful lifestyle of the Greek islands.

Like many other Aegean and Mediterranean islands, Kastellorizo has a Blue Grotto sea cave that you can explore by boat. Another must-see spot on the island is Knights Castle, which offers views of neighboring Turkey from its perch on a reddish hill.

2. Nafplion

Nafplion is one of the most beautiful and romantic towns in the Peloponnese region of Greece for an alternative seaside holiday. Nafplion was the first capital of Recce thus, it features countless historical monuments. Its picturesque old town and harbor are perfect for strolling.

The Arvanitia Beach has colorful pebbles and clear turquoise water, perfect for a refreshing swim. While here, make sure to visit the Bourtzi Castle, a 15th-century medieval fortress that sits on a tiny islet just off the coast of the charming town.

3. Kastoria

Kastoria is often compared to the Amalfi Coast but without the tourists. The Hellenic town sits along a peninsula that extends out into Lake Orestiada . The lake, deemed a national monument, is backed by rocky, wooded mountains. Besides enjoying the lake, you can also explore the Byzantine churches and Ottoman architecture in Kastoria. One of the most important attractions is the Panagia Mavriotissa Monastery, which sits on the shores of the lake and dates back to the 11th century.

4. Elafonisos

An island often frequented by locals, Elafonisos sits off the coast of the Peloponnese region near Athens. Although it’s a tiny island, it still has astonishing white-sand beaches and crystal clear waters. Besides the island’s glorious beaches, it also has ancient ruins to explore.

Divers can appreciate the island’s underwater ruins, too. Pavlopetri is one of the oldest completely sunken towns that has been found underwater.

The hills of Mount Olympus hold far more than just tales of Greek mythology . They’re also home to the town of Rapsani and its accompanying vineyards. Rapsani is a red wine created from a blend of three different grapes, the xinomavro, krassato, and stavroto grapes. Visiting this sloping wine region is truly an unforgettable experience .

6. Lake kerkini

Kerkini lake is one of the 11 Greek wetlands of national importance (RAMSAR Agreement) and one of the 113 most important areas for bird life in Greece. In 2010, it won the EDEN award as the best European destination which was part of the program called “European Destinations of Excellence”.

Serifos is an island located just a few hours away from Athens . It is one of the Cycladic islands so that means, like Santorini and Mykonos it has those iconic whitewashed houses with quaint blue windows. But here it’s a little bit different. The main town on this island is located up on a hill, which offers stunning views of the harbour.

In Serifos you can enjoy the quiet and even stay at a camping ground if you wish to indulge in nature. There are, of course, many beautiful beaches to explore. Because it is not as well known as the other Cycladic islands, you may not have heard of Serifos, but this underrated Greek island is definitely worth a visit.

This isn’t just one underrated Greek island but a cluster of island s , located in the Saronic gulf. The Saronic Gulf is conveniently close to the capital and these islands are just a short ferry ride away. So, if you are only spending a few days in Athens but still want to experience the Greek islands, this might be perfect.

Poros, Hydra and Aegina are all situated in the Saronic Gulf and they are often visited all together. If you take a cruise you can spend a few days on each island exploring the dreamy beaches they have to offer. On Hydra, no cars are allowed on the island, so it really gives you that old town Greece feel.

Milos is one of the most romantic island destinations! Despite this, it does not receive as much attention as some of the others in the Cyclades. This makes it another underrated Greek island you need to put on your radar. Adamas is the main town in Milos. Here you can hire a rental car and explore the beautiful beaches and fisherman villages around the island.

One of the most famous beaches in Milos is Sarakiniko. On this moonscape like setting you can enjoy the crystal-clear turquoise waters and bask on the smooth bright white volcanic rock! This is an incredibly unique beach that is a highlight of the island.

Lefkada is known for having beaches that consistently rank as some of the best in the world. Yet, surprisingly it is still underrated. The rich blue waters of the Ionian Sea offer endless chances for adventure. Perhaps you’d like to give windsurfing a try? Whether you explore this island by car or hiking, it is perfect for the whole family.

The unique beaches and sophisticated capital are an enticing part of Lefkada. The island gives you a distinct feeling of untamed beauty, untouched by tourism. A sensation reserved for these lesser known and underrated parts of the country!

Ikaria is further away than most, which is probably why it is one of the underrated Greek islands on our list. However, it is also one of the Greek islands with an airport , so flying here can save you the 8-hour ferry ride from Athens . One of the things that draws people to Ikaria is the locals. They are a fine example of why travellers fall in love with the Greek people.

Ikaria is a “Blue Zone” , which means it has a high percentage of centennials. The life expectancy of people on the island is over 90 years of age! When you visit Ikaria you are truly immersed in the love, culture and hospitality that the Ikarians have to offer. And perhaps you can learn a thing or two about longevity. I heard the secret is Greek wine!

With this underrated Greek island you are truly spoiled for choice. On Lemnos you can find sand dunes similar to those of the Sahara. You’ll see stunning beaches, ancient cities and Frankish castles. All set in a backdrop of an otherworldly volcanic landscape! I’m sure you’re already intrigued.

As well as an incredible natural environment, Lemnos has amazing night life and its incredibly budget friendly. Lemnos is particularly special for those traveling from Australia or New Zealand, or anywhere in the Commonwealth, as this island was where the ANZAC troops left for Gallipoli.

The best itinerary for the ‘underrated’ Greek Islands

Looking to experience a different side to the Greek Islands? This is your itinerary for the ‘underrated’ Greek Islands. We love the Greek Islands and have visited quite a few. The ones we love the best are those that are a little underrated by most travellers. Maybe because they feel more undiscovered, or you meet the locals, or they just aren’t as busy. Either way this is the best itinerary for the most underrated Greek Islands.

How many days for this underrated Greek Island itinerary?

Ok you could definitely add or take away some days to this, I am doing a 20 day itinerary because these islands deserve a little more time. Either for you to really appreciate them or to get around them as they can be big! This is a guide for the minimum amount of days in each island.

What do you need to pack for the Greek Islands?

Check out my Greek Island packing list to make sure you have the essentials for your trip. The best advice I can give is not to overpack. We usually travel as lightly as possible. It makes getting on and off ferries, scooters, hiring cars and in general just moving around easier. The Greek Islands are hot. You do not want to be lugging masses of luggage around all the time. With this best itinerary for the ‘underrated’ Greek Islands you will be moving each 2 to 3 days, that can start to be annoying if you have to much luggage.

How to get around the Greek Islands.

You can fly into Athens from anywhere in the world and then get to the ferry port. The ferry takes between 3-6 hours from Athens depending on which you choose. We always book with Ferry Hopper . They show all the options for boats and times. You can purchase your tickets and have them on your phone to show when getting on board. It really makes it so much easier than having to print out tickets. On each Greek Island you can take a ferry to the next. It is such a comfortable and easy way to get around.

I will add these details in to the itinerary below. Naxos and Milos both have domestic airports. You could fly into them from Athens to start and finish your trip if you prefer. We found great prices for flights from Milos to Athens when we were there.

What is the best time to go to the Greek Islands?

The Greek Islands all but shut down in winter. The high season is June to August and is the best time of year for the weather. It is also the most expensive and busiest. The islands I recommend here are definitely not as busy as the more well known islands of Santorini and Mykonos.

The months of May and September are the shoulder season and the cheapest and quieter times to travel the Greek Islands.

The best itinerary for the ‘underrated’ Greek Islands!

Our itinerary starts in Naxos and goes through to Milos. For me these are the best islands we have been to yet! They have so much diversity and opportunity to really experience the Greek Islands.

Day 1-3 – Naxos

Naxos is full of authentic Greece vibes. It is sleepy and not overrun at all. The ferry port is so simple, just walk forward and you are in the Chora and bus stop to anywhere in the island. Naxos has so much to offer from excellent hiking, beaches, historical sites, beautiful mountain villages and more. Check out our Naxos blog for all the best things to do and how we spent 3 days here. Tip – this island has the cheapest souvenirs and shops selling unique jewellery so save some time to shop!

Naxos Island

Day 4-7 – Paros

Paros is one of our favourite Greek Islands. The ferry from Naxos to Paros takes between half an hour and 1 hour depending on which boat and time you choose. It is incredibly beautiful across the whole island. Want to spend time in the white washed Chora, it is full of churches, history and cute shops. Prefer to explore some of the best beaches in the Greek Islands? Or maybe you want to spend some time in one of the loveliest villages in all of the Greek Islands? The choice is yours they are all here. Check out my favourite things to do on Paros !

The View from the Church of 100 Doors, Paros

Day 8-10 – Antiparos

Antiparos is a very tiny and quiet little island right off the shore of Paros. You can actually take a little ferry over for a day trip or book one of many tours there from Paros. This one is really popular, it is with Get Your Guide who we always use and recommend.

We took the ferry from Pounta in Paros to Antiparos and stayed there for two nights and it was exactly enough time for us to stop and soak it up. When I say it is tiny, I mean it has one main street where everything is really located. It is completely low key and I think that is the appeal. It feels local. Check out how we spent two days on Antiparos to see if you would prefer to do the day trip or to stay there. If you choose to do a day trip then add one day to Paros for this and stay there. Add the other day to any of the islands on this itinerary you will easily be able to fill the day and enjoy taking the pace a little slower! Another option is to pop over to Antiparos for drinks in the afternoon. Many people just drive to Pounta, leave their car at the port there and take the ferry over and back for a few hours. The main street of Antiparos is right near the port, it is all really walkable.

Antiparos in such an underrated Greek Island

Day 11-13 – Sifnos

Sifnos is a nature lovers dream. It is full of hikes, rugged mountains and stunning views. It feels authentic and rural. There are some stunning hotels and resorts here our top pick for a splurge is Verina Astra . This is the most beautiful, earthy, tranquil place, a true dream destination hotel. Otherwise staying in Apollonia is great for a central location. You must visit this excellent authentic Greek taverna on the beach in Sifnos which should not be missed! The Kastro and church is beyond perfect and the coolest bar in Greece is right here in our Sifnos Island blog. It takes between 50 minutes to 3 hours for the ferry from Paros to Sifnos.

Faros Beach Sifnos

Day 14-16 – Kimolos

Kimolos is the idylic getaway from it all Greek Island. It is not only small but it barely gets visited by tourists. You will find locals that are interested in why you are there and stop for a chat if you allow the time. You should they are so sweet. We loved our time here. It is such a creative community of people. There are so many creative decorations throughout the streets, stores selling unique decor and jewellery. The cafes and bars are all so beautifully crammed in near the Kastro at the centre. It is a place you could get lost in and spend your time living simply and enjoying life. It takes about two and a half hours for the ferry between Sifnos and Kimolos . You can find out what we did on this beautiful island in our Kimolos blog , this Greek Island is seriously underrated!

most underrated Greek Island Kimolos

Day 17-20 – Milos

Our final Greek Island on this underrated Greek Island itinerary is Milos! I have put four days for Milos but you could easily spend more. Milos is big, and there is a lot to discover. It has such beautiful fishing villages, incredible unique beaches and great food. I could spend a week here and not be bored of it. Milos is an absolute must do! Check out what we got up to on our Milos blogs . We have covered our favourite beaches must dos and how to spend you time. The ferry from Kimolos to Milos only takes about an hour.

Alternatively you can take a tour around Milos, this one will show you all the best places and is well run: Best of Milos Private Land Tour

Milos Plaka

These are our favourite Greek Islands! They offer so much and you really get to taste and experience the real Greece. Meet the locals, visit the historical sites, and eat the food. I can’t wait to go back and would gladly visit any of these again. If you need any help at all in your planning feel free to reach out in comments or via email, we are happy to help. Check out all our Greek Island blogs!

The Best Underrated Greek Islands To Visit

With thousands to choose from, we narrow down the list for you.

underrated places to visit in greece

As a woman of Greek descent, I feel an absurd amount of pride when people rave about how amazing the isles are . But with thousands to choose from, why limit yourself to Santorini, Crete and Mykonos, which are constantly flooded with tourists? Here are some of the most visit-worthy enclaves in Greece you've never even thought about traveling to—until now.

Nicoletta Richardson is an NYC-based editor and writer who travels to eat and eats to travel. Follow her adventures on Instagram at @nicolettanne .

Known as the birthplace of the Greek cookbook , Sifnos upholds its longtime gastronomic reputation through both old-timey, hyper-local dives and new, internationally influenced restaurants from well-known chefs. You're guaranteed to feel like an insider when you stay at Smaragdi Hotel , an intimate, sophisticated property that's walking distance to great restaurants and beaches. Dine at Manolis for its signature revithia —a chickpea soup with onions and broth—and try homemade loukoumades , balls of fried dough drenched in honey. And whenever you see a souvlaki stand on the street, make sure to nab a stick or two—you won't regret it.

Past the hustling and bustling island of Mykonos is Naxos—a hidden gem where you can wander little alleys lined with shops and restaurants, or escape to the serene mountains to see ancient ruins, or retreat to Agia Anna beach, which is just steps outside the chic Iria Beach Art Hotel . On Mount Zeus, one of the highest peaks throughout the Cyclades islands, a wet climate and rich soil create ideal growing conditions for olives, figs and potatoes. Stop by Axiotissa Taverna for phyllo-covered cheese pie and figs, veal with fresh herbs, and thickly sliced potatoes. Fair warning: Naxos has become increasingly popular since Anthony Bourdain featured it on an episode of Parts Unknown, so pay a visit before it becomes overrun.

This tiny island is one of five locations across the globe where people live longer, happier lives, according to Blue Zones , an organization that tracks and promotes healthy communities worldwide. So why wouldn't you want to visit? Ikarians love hiking the mountainous terrain and chowing down on dishes made with unprocessed, local ingredients (olive oil, fruits and vegetables, goat's milk) that naturally follow the Mediterranean diet. Book a room at Erofili Beach Hotel —your balcony will offer incredible views of the blue water and lush terrain—then stroll to the nearby Atsachas Restaurant for a slice of homemade moussaka (an eggplant-based beef dish) and a glass of red wine.

Part of the Cyclades islands, Tinos is home to the Church of Panagia Evangelista, a famous Greek Orthodox pilgrimage site. Marble-sculpted buildings—a traditional architectural element on the Cyclades islands—are everywhere you turn in the main town of Hora, including on the exterior of the excellent Vincenzo hotel . At Koutouki Tis Elenis , a hidden gem near the hotel, you'll find fennel pie with artichokes; the latter is a popular ingredient found in many Tinos dishes. And at Drosia , a traditional Greek taverna , you'll find one of the island's specialties: fourtalia , a traditional fried-egg omelet filled with local sausage and potatoes.

Photo: milangonda/Getty Images

Although it's the largest of the Sporades islands, don't let the size fool you—this destination is the least touristy of the bunch and is perfect for a kick-your-feet-up vacation. Stay at Hotel Nefeli , where you can lounge by the outdoor pool and take in the breathtaking views of the hilly mountains and quiet coastline. Make sure to visit the beaches of Molos and Magazia, where you can dip into the postcard-perfect, crystal clear water. Many of the locals are fishermen by trade, so there's no shortage of fresh seafood. Head to Oi Istories Tou Barba and order the astakomakaronada , or lobster spaghetti, which Skyros is famous for.

underrated places to visit in greece

From iconic islands to major cities to the lesser-known, wild region of Epiros, our list of essential Greek destinations has a bit of everything © Georgios Tsichlis / Shutterstock

As its mythical Sirens were reputed to do, Greece has long lured travelers to its scintillating shores.

Across an expansive island archipelago, traditional whitewashed villages, azure seas and waterfront tavernas enchant visitors. Greece’s mountainous mainland, rich in UNESCO World Heritage–listed ancient sites, treasure-filled museums and spirited cities, is no less fascinating. As you contemplate your dream Greece itinerary, consider these 10 favorite places to add to it.

The Caryatids of the Parthenon at sunset, the Acropolis, Athens, Greece

Wherever you walk in Greece’s storied capital, the ancients have walked before – whether you see the evidence or not. From the Acropolis  (whose jewel in the crown is the fifth-century BCE Parthenon ) to the underground metro (where some stations feature archaic finds), Athens  is teeming with historical sites , monuments and museums. A combo card affords entry to the Acropolis and six more sites; the Acropolis Museum is also a must-see.

Easy to tackle on foot, Athens is also one of Europe’s liveliest metropolises – and strolls through neighborhoods like old-town Plaka , flea market–famous Monastiraki and hip Pangrati are highlights. By night, catch a live band in gritty Gazi , catch a movie at an outdoor cinema in Thission or go bar-hopping off the main commercial street Ermou.

Local tip: Book tickets online for a reinvented Greek tragedy or dance troupe performance at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus amphitheater as part of the  Epidaurus Festival , which takes place each summer.

Stunning photograph of a young woman diving in the deep and crystalline waters of the Cyclades islands, Milos,

A collection of over 70 beaches, sea caves hidden beneath limestone cliffs and technicolor traditional boat houses are just some of the reasons why mineral-rich Milos has won the hearts of many travelers. Evidence of its volcanic origins can be seen in the almost lunar landscape of Sarakiniko , where the more daring dive into a jade-colored Aegean. Arrive early at Gerondas beach to nab the generous shade of caves and enjoy floating silently in still waters.

Planning tip: Save a couple of days to spend on Kimolos, a small island northeast of Milos reachable by ferry. One of its most impressive beaches is Prassa, where coarse, blindingly white sand shows off shallow, aquamarine waters to full effect.

The medieval old town of Rhodes, Dodecanese, Greece

Rhodes has long been the Dodecanese ’s biggest draw thanks to its atmospheric UNESCO World Heritage–listed medieval old town . Transformed in the Middle Ages by the Knights of the Order of St John into a formidable fortified city, it fell to the Ottomans, who erected mosques, baths and houses, many of which have been restored. Youngsters might envision armored men on horseback thundering down the cobblestoned Street of the Knights .

Make sure you visit the Palace of the Grand Master , which features stunning Roman and Early Christian floor mosaics, and the Church of Our Lady of the Castle.

Planning tip: Book a state-licensed tour guide to show you around the old town for a full picture of its long and fascinating history.

A couple walks among the iconic white buildings of Oia, Santorini, Cyclades, Greece

4. Santorini

Whether you’re coupled up or not, it’s hard not to fall for Santorini ’s charms. Whitewashed and pastel-hued, cube-shaped homes cling to steep cliffsides above a cobalt Aegean and the island’s famed caldera, formed by volcanic eruptions over millennia.

Weave your way through the narrow alleyways of the postcard-perfect village of Oia amid blue-domed churches. Bathe in thermal springs warmed by an active volcano, splay out on black-sand beaches and don’t miss the prehistoric settlement of Akrotiri , which features an advanced drainage system.

Planning tip: Book a private tour of Santorini ’s smaller wine estates, whose new generation of vintners is breathing new life into traditional wines like mezzo and Nychteri.

Path to the Hermits Cave, near Monastery of Agia Paraskevi, Monodendri, Vikos Gorge, Greece

In Greece’s west lies Epiros , a remote region of soaring mountain peaks, fast-flowing rivers and hidden rock canyons. Hike to the alpine heights of Mt Tymfi’s Dragon Lake, which freezes over in winter, or traverse the thick forests, inclines and descents of spectacular Vikos Gorge . Whitewater rafting thrills and spills await in the Voidomatis or Arachthos rivers, while canyoning enthusiasts can choose from routes of varying difficulty.

View Of a windmill at the top of the whitewashed Hora Village in Serifos, Cyclades, Greece

6. Kythnos and Serifos

If peaceful sandy shores, unassuming waterfront tavernas and sleepy villages are more your style, the low-key West Cyclades isles of Kythnos and Serifos are worth a stop. Kythnos has deep, sheltered bays and tamarisk-dotted silver-sand beaches, among them Lefkes and Naousa.

Wallet-friendly tavernas line the laid-back fishing settlements of Loutro and Meriha, while wind-whipped Serifos , a two-hour ferry ride from Piraeus , features sweeping sandy beaches, sheltered bays, ghostly mining relics and a jewel-like hilltop capital whose neoclassical town hall stands sentinel over the buzzy main square.

Inside Kapani, one of the largest and most popular markets of Thessaloniki, Macedonia, Greece

7. Thessaloniki

At the crossroads of East and West, where the Romans, Byzantines and Ottomans have held sway over the centuries, Thessaloniki tempts serious foodies. Bougatsa , a phyllo pastry pie usually filled with semolina custard, spinach or mince meat, makes for a hearty breakfast. Pick up olives and spices at the olfactory-awakening open-air markets and Pontic cheeses from indoor food hub Modiano , which dates back to 1922. In the former oil merchant district of Ladadika, mezedopolia serve dishes revealing strong Anatolian and Middle Eastern influences, customarily with the fiery clear spirit tsipouro .

Planning tip: Thessaloniki is also renowned for its fish and seafood, served with fervor and pride whether it’s a backstreet taverna or an upscale restaurant. Bookings are recommended for the latter.

Amazing beach of Votsi in Alonnisos island, Greece

Tranquil, turquoise seas, fir-studded hillsides and a regal capital make Corfu one of the most beautiful parts of the country to go sailing. The Ionian isle is the ideal starting point for novices who can take a sailing course and gain certification.

Afterward, join a flotilla for a leisurely cruise around Corfu, dropping anchor at Kalami Bay (of The Durrells fame) and lush Paleokastritsa. In Corfu Town , admire Venetian fortresses, the French-designed Liston Arcade and The Palace of St Michael and St George , built during the island’s British administration.

Planning tip: Few venture to Erikousa island, northwest of Corfu, which is blessed with pristine beaches and shallow cerulean seas.

Venetian harbour of the Pittoresk Cretan town with colorful old houses and loads of people

Greece’s largest island, Crete  abounds in historical sites, well-preserved monuments and modern museums. A wander through the Minoan-era palaces of Knossos , Malia , Phaestos and Kato Zakros  won’t disappoint any fan of classical culture.

Stroll along the Venetian Harbour in Hania , lined with Ottoman monuments such as the Kioutsouk Hasan Mosque . Trek up to Byzantine and Venetian fortresses such as the Fortezza in Rethymno and Kastelli in Hania. In the east, the 16th-century Venetian fortress on Spinalonga islet reveals a harrowing, more recent past as a leper colony.

Among noteworthy museums are the Heraklion Archaeological Museum , Chania’s Maritime Museum of Crete , and the Museum of Ancient Eleutherna in Rethymno.

Homosexual couple watching the sunset at Mykonos

10. Mykonos

In the 1960s and 70s, Mykonos hosted roving hippies, celebrities and moneyed jet-setters who flirted and danced till the sun came up. While new five-star hotels and swanky brand-name restaurants may have altered the landscape and driven up prices, the fabled Cycladic isle still reigns supreme when it comes to summer nightlife in the Mediterranean.

Revelers can choose from the thumping bars lining Little Venice in Hora , as well as beach bars, cabaret restaurants and iconic clubs like seaside Cavo Paradiso , where illustrious music DJs fire up the crowd.

Planning tip: August is Mykonos’ busiest month. It’s also when you can witness the hottest DJs and surprise appearances by music artists, including prominent hip-hop names.

Looking to go to Greece but don’t want to deal with tourist crowds? These are five of the best Greek islands for you — the least-visited, unspoiled, and ultimately underrated

Greece is one of our popular holiday destinations , with the islands of Santorini, Crete, and Zakynthos being the main spots to welcome visitors from all over the world. But if you’re looking for somewhere less touristy (and often cheaper with it), there are some 200 other inhabited islands to choose from. We’ve narrowed them down to five of the quieter, lesser-visited, but still equally beautiful — these are the most underrated Greek islands, and any one of them might just be exactly the kind of you-time vacation you need.

Melissani Cave — Getty Images

Kefalonia is one of the largest Greek islands, but one of the lesser-visited. This means that you can explore the island’s rugged mountains, fir forests and magical caves in peace, away from huge huddles of tourists. For this, you’ll need at least a week if you want to go at a leisurely pace, stopping at regular intervals for glasses of local Robola wine. And because it’s quieter than the likes of similarly-sized Crete, Lesbos and Rhodes, the prices are cheaper and the locals are even friendlier.

One of Kefalonia’s sure highlights is Melissani Cave, with its lagoon water so clear, your boat will look like it’s floating in mid-air. On beaches, Myrtos Beach is generally regarded as the most beautiful, and its 700-meter stretch means that it never gets truly crowded. But for something that little bit more special, find Fteri Beach. There’s no road access to this spectacular little cove, so you either need to walk through the cliffs or take the Fteri “Water Taxi” from the village of Zola. Pure paradise, we’re telling you.

Sunset view over hills on Ikaria — Getty Images

Some 30 kilometers from the tourist hotspot of Mykonos, the unspoiled island of Ikaria can be described as a cute and calm collection of villages dotted in and around lush green mountains. This is the spot for you if you’re into trekking, birdwatching, and cooling off in secluded streams and waterfalls.

An interesting Ikarian feature is the peculiar stone houses that you’re likely to come across if you do venture inland. They date from a time known as piratiki epochi (“pirate era”), when pirates would regularly attack the island. To protect themselves, locals would build their homes so that they resembled nothing more conspicuous than big piles of rocks. Thankfully, people now live in houses more lavish than this, but the rudimentary stone structures remain as a cool and little-known relic of Greece’s dramatic history.

Ikaria is also one of the world’s Blue zones , and it’s easy to understand why. The local diet is one of the healthiest in Greece, if not the world; the island is especially known for its production of red wine, olives and honey — all of the highest quality. This, the natural surroundings that sort of force you to lose track of time, and the wellness culture as seen in the spa town of Therma all make for the best quiet Greek island vacation.

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Visit Samos Island | Greece (@visitsamos)

If you want to hop between islands, Samos is right next to Ikaria and equally beautiful, with its pretty villages, beaches and vineyard coves. Geographically, Samos is one of the last stepping stones before Asia, with the Turkish mainland being less than two kilometers away, yet it exudes its own charming identity. It welcomes more tourists than Ikaria does, but still relatively few compared to the larger islands. This is a place where you can truly chill out, be it among nature, or the laid-back village locals.

With a liberal sprinkling of archeological sites, Samos is the perfect choice for anyone with an interest in ancient history. The small town of Pythagoreio, for example, was named in honor of the pinoeer mathematician and philosopher who was born on the island, and it’s well worth exploring. It contains several ruins — collectively with Unesco World Heritage status — such as the very first human-constructed Mediterranean harbor which dates back to the 6th century BCE. Then, bring yourself back to present-day island life with a stroll down The Blue Street, an Instagrammable alleyway where the ground and the surrounding buildings are painted artistically in no other colors but white and blue.

View out to sea from cliffs on Anafi — Getty Images

Fly to Santorini , but don’t stop there — take a short ferry ride to Anafi for some proper peace and quiet. With a population of less than 300, this is the smallest Greek island on our list, and despite its proximity to Santorini, it remains unspoiled by mass tourism. Yet still, miraculously, Anafi is pretty visitor-friendly.

Because of its remote nature, people tend to visit Anafi for more of an off-grid experience. The best things to do here are take long, relaxing walks in the hills, swim in the clear waters, and simply lie on the sunny beach undisturbed. Camping on one of Anafi’s beaches is also an incredibly freeing thing to do (in more ways than one — you don’t have to pay a penny). Imagine drifting off to sleep at night, cozy in your tent, soothed solely by the sound of gentle waves lapping against the sand. This will be the point at which all your troubles with the outside world seem to melt away.

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by 🇬🇷Greek Islands Travel Guide🇬🇷 (@greek_islands_travel_guide)

This is a wonderful island to hop over to if you fly to nearby Crete or Rhodes, as it offers an experience that is both serene, and authentically, unpretentiously Greek . On your approach, you’ll notice that the landscape of Kasos isn’t as lush and green as that of some of the other islands we’ve recommended here, apart from around the municipality of Agia Marina on the north side. But don’t let the initially barren, rugged appearance of Kasos put you off — the place has a lot of things going for it, the distinct lack of noisy tourists being one of them.

It’s here that you’ll find some of the most secluded beaches in the Aegean, though some of them — such as Emporio Beach not far from the village of Fri — are organized, which basically means there might be a hut or a sun lounger to make use of. Emporio is said to be one of the best beaches on the island for its golden sands and the little nearby taverna of the same name, renowned for its fresh seafood dishes. Arts and culture also play a significant part in everyday life in Kasos, with village locals often up for a traditional song and dance, while exhibitions of local art take place in Fri. And, owing to the fact that it is a hidden gem of a Greek island, it’s comparatively cheap. What are you waiting for?

“A True Disappointment:” People Are Sharing Underwhelming Travel Destinations To Skip, And The Gems You Should Consider Instead

"This one may be controversial, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone."

Hannah Loewentheil

BuzzFeed Staff

It's a great big world out there — and there are so many places to see. But it can be difficult to decipher between disappointing tourist traps and destinations that are actually so worth the hype. To help with this, I scoured advice from travelers on Reddit and within the BuzzFeed Community . Here are 33 overrated places that — according to them — are not worth your precious time. (Plus 26 others that actually are!)

1. underrated: albania.

A beach with very blue water

"The northern part is filled with beautiful landscapes and mountain ranges, and the south has beaches with crystal blue water. You can find incredibly nice resorts and hotels to stay at for very affordable prices. The people are extremely welcoming, and the hospitality is great."

— u/Handsomeclooney

2. Overrated: Downtown Dubai

A cityscape of Dubai from an infinity pool

"It's talked up as one of the best tourist destinations in the world, but when I was there it felt like an amusement park under construction. I felt like I was constantly being shuttled from one tourist trap to another." — u/NamerNotLiteral

3. Underrated: Lima, Peru

Lima, Peru coastline

"I hear so many people say to skip it or only spend a day there, but I would say it's worth a trip. The historic downtown is gorgeous, and it’s on the coast with plenty of beaches. Plus the food and people are awesome. I spent four days there and still wish I had more time to explore."

— u/Ninjadwarf00

4. Overrated: Bourbon Street, New Orleans

Crowded Bourbon Street in New Orleans for Mardi Gras

"It's filthy, smells like pee, there's gross beer everywhere, and broken glass all over the ground." — u/HeadlessFlyKing

5. Underrated: New Mexico

A rocky desert landscape

"The whole state is underrated, but specifically Albuquerque, Taos, and the New Mexican desert. The scenery is utterly breathtaking, the culture and history are unique, and the food is delicious. You'll know why people call it 'The Land of Enchantment' as soon as you see the Sandia Mountains glowing pink at sunset."

— u/ tinyowlinahat

6. Overrated: Hollywood Boulevard, Los Angeles

A sign for Hollywood Boulevard

"It’s crowded and smells like pee." — u/ladies-pmme-nudespls

7. Underrated: Pienza, Italy

A couple sitting on the stairs enjoying the view

"Whereas some of the bigger Tuscan towns like Siena and Montepulciano felt a bit touristy, Pienza was truly a hidden gem. It's right in the picturesque Val d'Orcia overlooking vineyards and rolling hills, home to cute, family-run restaurants, tiny shops selling local wine and Pecorino cheese, and stunning Medieval buildings. Everywhere you look seems like it came straight out of a postcard. It was one of the most beautiful towns I've ever seen."

— H annah Loewentheil

8. Underrated: Tunisia

A whitewashed village with blue doors

"Tunisia is one of the best countries I've ever traveled to. It's mind-boggling to me that most people who venture there see it as simply a beach destination. In fact, most things I loved about the country could be found deeper inland."

— u/JayPetey

9. Overrated: Pisa, Italy

A hand pretending to hold the Leaning Tower of Pisa

"Pisa in general I found to be very touristy. If you want to visit a great destination in central Italy, head to the walled city of San Gimignano instead. It's a quick train trip from either Florence or Pisa, and it's 100% worth it."

—u/ nookienostradamus

"Does anyone really need to take the famous holding up the tower picture? Or rather, a picture of all the other tourists taking the holding up the tower picture?"

— u/Fluxxed0

10. Underrated: Dakar, Senegal

Boats on the beach

"Senegal in general, but specifically the capital Dakar and its surroundings should be up there with Cape Town, Nairobi, Johannesburg, and Cairo as one of the must-visit destinations in Africa. It's a lovely city with a lot of French influence, and it's a great spot to start a trip in West Africa."

— u/Thrill_Monster

11. Overrated: The Blue Lagoon, Reykjavik

People in the Blue Lagoon in Iceland

"I was very disappointed: It's tepid water flowing down from a power plant. You're better off finding the many natural hot springs scattered around Iceland." — u/KingCharlesHead

12. Underrated: Sicily

A coastal town in Sicily

"Sicily is gorgeous, and the food is out of this world. You get to experience a culture that has been inspired by the Italians, Greeks, Normans, Romans, Ottomans, and Spanish. The climate itself is so diverse: There are beaches, skiing, and Mt. Etna is one of the best wine regions in Europe."

13. Underrated: Ibiza, Spain

A quiet beach in Ibiza

"Ibiza has a bad reputation as a party city, but it's so much more than that if you know where to look. It boasts beautiful nature, amazing historical sites, and lovely quiet small towns all over. Just avoid the capital at night."

14. Overrated: Phuket, Thailand

An aerial shot of a beach

"Planning a vacation there during high season means you'll be sharing the beach with tons of other tourists. While this may improve if you go during low season, you'll most likely get lots of rain. Plus, trash and water quality are a big problem." — u/irishamerican

15. Overrated: Clearwater Beach, Florida

People on the beach

"It's been built up so much there's hardly any beach left. The traffic is really awful, so devote two hours of precious beach time just sitting in it. It stinks big time for the locals."

—u/kurnadurn

16. Overrated: The Pyramids of Giza, Egypt

Sightseers flock to view great pyramids at Giza

"This might be harsh, but the swarm of aggressive market vendors surrounding the pyramids makes visiting this site a bit of a nightmare. One woman in our tour group asked a guard to take her photo, and he refused to return her phone unless she paid him. The whole time, we were yelled at and haggled into buying headscarves and assorted souvenirs, which ruined my experience. I spent months looking forward to the trip and felt so disappointed."

— u/ TheTrustyCrumpet

17. Overrated: Atlantic City

Atlantic City boardwalk and Ferris wheel

"Venture a few blocks away from the boardwalk and you'll realize that Atlantic City is incredibly depressing. It's very clearly an area exploited by the big casinos while the locals have been driven to absolute poverty. But they still force a smile to work the shops that are required for the tourist traffic."

"Clearwater Beach is nowhere near the nicest beach in the area. You can drive 10 miles south and have Redington Beach, with nicer sand and almost no other people."

—u ToeyGowd

18. Underrated: Poland

Old Town Gdansk, Poland

"I spent two weeks in Poland, and I have to say it’s a gorgeous country that is much cheaper to visit than many of the more popular European vacation spots. Gdansk is amazing and has a terrific World War II museum. Almost every major city has an Old Town, which is so much fun to explore. Warsaw boasts lots of museums and acres of natural beauty. And if you’re nervous about the language barrier, most people in the major cities speak English. I can't wait to go back to Poland and explore more."

"I was so pleasantly surprised by how beautiful this country is. I road-tripped, and every city was very beautiful and had a unique history. Poland has something for everyone, whether you're looking for culture or to party. The mountains are also beautiful with great hiking. Prices are very affordable, especially if you come from a Western country."

19. Overrated: Cancún, Mexico

Aerial view of Cancun Coastline at sunrise

"Sure, it's pretty, but doesn't represent the beauty of Mexico. Go to Mérida — the food is better, and the nature is great."

— u/Lockshala

"There are so many cooler, hipper, better places to visit around Cancún and the  Yucatan. Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Valladolid, and Mérida are much better if you're considering a trip."

— u/samuraibutter

20. Overrated: Manila, Philippines

A high angle view of people at a busy market in a city

"I really loved the other places I visited in the Philippines, but Manila was awful. The air quality, the traffic, the garbage, I could go on. Most of all, the poverty, especially among children, was heart-wrenching. It was a good wake-up call for a privileged Westerner, but not one I want to experience again."

— u/ westcoastliz

21. Overrated: Kuta, Bali

A street with lots of restaurant and shop signs

"Kuta, a resort town in southern Bali, is the worst. It's been completely and utterly ruined by tourists. I was there during Australian 'spring break,' and the whole place was just overrun with young, drunk 'party bros.' I fled from Kuta as fast as I could."

— u/franichan

22. Underrated: San Sebastian, Spain

San Sebastian, Spain

"This stretch of Northern Spain within 70 miles of the French border has the best food in Europe. San Sebastian is a mecca for foodies, where you can drool over street food for lunch or dine at Michelin-starred restaurants for weeks straight before you run out of new options."

23. Overrated: Times Square, New York

A crowded intersection in Times Square, NYC

"It’s a tourist trap, and the restaurants and shopping aren’t unique to NYC. Why eat in Times Square when you can eat at the same chain restaurants in a Midwestern city for even cheaper?" — u/putmeinthegomi

24. Overrated: Niagara Falls (New York Side)

American Niagara Falls with the Niagara falls city in background.

"You're better off going to the Canadian side."   — u/jgoldblum88

25. Overrated: Nashville, Tennessee

Neon signs of Broadway in Nashville

"Nashville is not a fascinating place. In fact, you could tour every interesting place in a single day. The city is made up of a ton of bars to get drunk at and construction everywhere. I heard something like 10,000 new people a day move there, and I can't understand why. Rent is insanely high because of it. We're at almost $2,000 a month for 1,400 square feet 30 minutes out of Nashville city limits. Honestly, not even locals like living here anymore."

—u/herculeesjr

26. Underrated: Hilo, Hawaii

A waterfall surrounded by lush forest

"Many travelers overlook this whole island, but the lush and green Hilo side of the Big Island of Hawaii is especially incredible. The highway from Waipi’o Valley down to Hilo extends over valleys and cliffs. There are waterfalls and dramatic ocean views, and we were constantly pulling over wanting to take photos."

27. Underrated: Portland, Maine

Boats in a harbor

"Some of the best meals I've ever had were in Portland. The hardest part when visiting is trying to decide whether to go to your well-established favorite spots, or try the new ones that are currently popping up and being raved about."

— theshoegazer

28. Overrated: Las Vegas

Welcome to Las Vegas sign

"I am by no means a prude person, but that place is horrific."

 — u/nocliper101

29. Underrated: Tallinn, Estonia

Snowfall in a European town

"I really wasn't expecting much when I visited. I mostly just decided to stop in Talinn because I was traveling from Finland to London, and it was an off the beaten path location for a quick day trip. But holy crap, it was beautiful, and the people were so friendly. I'd go back there for a proper vacation in a heartbeat."

"Any of the Baltic states really, but Estonia is an absolutely delightful place. It's super affordable, easy to navigate, the capital city Tallinn is so beautiful and clean, the coast is lovely, the people are friendly, and the food is delicious. I absolutely loved our trip there, and it would be a great base camp if you want to check out the nearby countries of Finland, Norway, and Denmark."

30. Overrated: Athens, Greece

A view of Athens and the Acropolis

"Athens was dirty, and there was graffiti everywhere. I didn't feel safe in the city at all. There were insane drivers, and none of the locals were nice. In stark contrast to my experience in Athens, the Greek Islands were some of the most beautiful and enjoyable places I've ever been, filled with the most friendly people."

31. Overrated: Geneva, Switzerland

An old town surrounded by mountains

"It was most definitely a pretty city, but the soul-crushing cost of everything totally weighed down my experience there. I never expected to pay 24 Swiss Francs for a hamburger in my life...and I never will again."

u/blake22222

32. Underrated: Republic of Georgia

A town built into the mountains with a river running next to it

"Georgia is amazing! It's home to beautiful mountains, chic beaches, friendly people, amazing wine, food unlike anything you’ve ever tried, and a very interesting mix of cultures and influences. I was there for two weeks, but I could have easily stayed for a year."

— MariaPorgirella

33. Overrated: Machu Picchu, Peru

Tourists climbing Machu Picchu

"The site itself is really incredible, but it's overcrowded with so many loud tourists to the point where you feel like you're walking through Disney World instead of a UNESCO heritage site."

34. Underrated: Taipei, Taiwan

Sunset over Taipei, Taiwan

It's my favorite city in Asia: a great mix of traditional Chinese culture with Japanese and US influences. There's fantastic food (especially great street food at the night markets). It's modern enough to be convenient, but not expensive. It's big enough to have lots to do, but small enough to be manageable and not overwhelming. And the people are friendly, open, and helpful."

— u/gotthelowdown

35. Overrated: Bondi Beach, Sydney

A busy Bondi beach in Sydney, Australia

"It's a mediocre beach, and during the summer it's always very crowded, so you hardly have space to swim or enjoy yourself." — u/crocodiledendi

36. Overrated: Marrakesh

The main market square in Marrakesh

"It would have been amazing before about 2000, but now it just feels like a Disneyland version of their culture to cater to Western tourists. And you can't walk 20 feet without being approached by scammers, like, literally every block. The entire city just feels like a facade to attract tourist money."

— u/ legshampo o

"Of all the places we visited in Morocco, Jemaa el-Fnaa was the biggest disappointment. It's full of knock-off clothes and guys trying to get you to take pictures with cobras. Marrakesh in general is awesome, but the market is a letdown." — u/deleted

37. Overrated: Walt Disney World, Orlando

Characters at Disney World

"Disney World is the only place I’ve been that truly disappointed me. It had no redeeming qualities at all. You have to pay just to see characters or just about anything , all the rides lead right into overpriced gift shops, the lines were horrendous, and the rides were only mediocre. Disney is commercialism and exploitation of the consumer at its finest."

"Want to eat? Be ready to shell out $50 a person per day. Oh, you came for the rides? Enjoy the two or three you can actually enjoy on a busy day."

—u/flipamadiggermadoo

38. Underrated: Oman

A boat on a bay

"For people who love the outdoors, Oman is a no-brainer. There's hiking, camping, dune bashing, and miles of untouched coastline. There are even lush rain forests. It's also extremely safe."

39. Overrated: Stonehenge

Crowds arriving to visit Stonehenge

"It’s a set of rocks out in the middle of a field that smells like sheep poop. It was  cool for a few minutes, but far too big of a hassle to be worth it." — u/opvina4

40. Underrated: Osaka

Tatoyaki cooking in a street food stall

"People tend to only visit Tokyo and Kyoto, but Osaka shouldn't be overlooked. It's a big city like Tokyo, but with a much longer history. It's located smack dab in the middle of the Kansai region, the historical cultural center of Japan . It's known to be more fun and laid-back, and I think there's some truth to that. It's also the culinary capital of Japan, a must-visit for all foodies."

— u/CaptainNomihodai

41. Underrated: Romania

Medieval castles surrounded by greenery

"Romania is absolutely amazing. This Balkan country boasts beautiful sites, nature, warm sandy beaches, friendly people, and good food. And the icing on that cake is that it's incredibly affordable. I never understand why more people don't travel there."

—u/ louise1969

42. Overrated: Cinque Terre, Italy

Tiered colorful houses

"This one may be controversial, but I found this handful of villages in coastal Liguria to be very boring and overly touristy. All the hiking trails were closed. Either way, it's a day trip at best, and I would recommend visiting the Amalfi Coast over Cinque Terre."

—u/CaligulaAndHisHorse

43. Underrated: Girona, Spain

A coastal Spanish town

"People usually just go to Barcelona, but they overlook Girona just 100 kilometers away. It's a beautiful small city with an impressive old town. It's so beautiful that you might recognize the cathedral and other parts of the city from some  Game of Thrones   scenes."

— ropra7645

44. Overrated: The Waikiki Strip, Honolulu

Crowded Waikiki Beach in Oahu

"There are so many cooler places on the island to spend your time." — u/Jubilies

"Oahu is absolutely beautiful and worth visiting, but stay away from Waikiki. It's overpriced, crowded, and the beach is tiny. Waimea Bay on the North Shore during the summer and Lanikai/Kailua beach during the winter are way better." — u/deleted

45. Overrated: Angkor Wat, Cambodia

Monks walking near Angkor Wat

"It's so full of people that you can hardly move without stepping on someone's feet. And it's impossible to get photos without a million other tourists in them."

u/godless-life

46. Underrated: Giethoorn, Netherlands

Boats in a canal

"It's a small village where you can sail on a boat through the canals and just enjoy the view. In the summer it can get a bit crowded, but it's a lovely city. There are restaurants along the canals where you relax and have a drink. Not many tourists know about it, but it's a must-visit if you're in the Netherlands."

— u/imjohnk

47. Overrated: The Great Wall of China, Beijing

A crowd on the Great Wall of China

"If you go to the Great Wall of China, I'd suggest not going to the section right there in Beijing. It's newly rebuilt and touristy. For a much better experience, drive a ways out of the city to the Simatai section (120 kilometers northeast of Beijing). There, you'll find an original portion of the Great Wall that is uncrowded and more authentic."

— u/DownUpOverAndBack

48. Overrated: Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

People on a wide beach

"If you're on the Carolina coast, go somewhere else like Charleston. It's so much nicer." — u/brokendowndryer

49. Underrated: Alentejo, Portugal

A beach town surrounded by hills

"If you're looking for a quiet vacation, Alentejo is for you. You can visit Roman ruins, old churches, and see Moorish architecture in southern Portugal. There's also a ton of natural beauty from lakes to rolling hills and big, open farms. The region makes great local wine, and the food is delicious too. You can easily combine a trip to Alentejo with a visit to Spain, a beachy getaway in the Algarve, or a city escape to Lisbon." — sarapm

50. Underrated: Mainland Greece

The sun setting over a beautiful, steep landscape

"Everyone travels to the Greek islands and doesn't really spend time in the north on the mainland, but regions in Northern Greece like Halkidiki are very nice too! And the mainland has a fairly overlooked repertoire of wildlife preserves."

— u/Pontios93

51. Overrated: Monaco

Yachts in a harbor with a hilly city in the background

"I was in southern France and decided to take a quick trip to Monaco because I has heard great things about it. Once I got there though, I was thoroughly disappointed with the place. There was nothing but high-end clothing stores, extremely overpriced (and terrible) food, and docks filled with yachts. There was a complete absence of culture of anything interesting. It just felt like a place where ultra-rich people go to flaunt off their wealth."

52. Overrated: Goa, India

A beach with boats and people in Goa, India

"Goa is talked up to be a legendary beach destination, but it really isn't that great.  It's crazy busy, the water can be polluted, and it's not relaxing. If you're looking for a beach getaway, there are many better options."

—u/Thrill_Monster

53. Underrated: Adelaide, Australia

Steps leading to a beach

"Think: stunning wineries, a beautiful coast, and a vibrant food scene. The city itself is absolutely stunning, and the locals are so friendly. There's just as much to do in Adelaide as there is in Melbourne or Sydney."

— u/Gretchenmeows

54. Overrated: Venice, Italy

Gondolas in a Venetian canal

"Taking a gondola ride through the canals was cool, and the city itself is pretty, but Venice gets old quickly."

— u/GMen2613

55. Overrated: Caminito, Buenos Aires

Colorful buildings of Caminito in Buenos Aires

"Everything is massively overpriced, and if you venture out of the small triangle, it's not very safe. Stick to San Telmo and nicer neighborhoods like Recoleta, Palermo, and Belgrano."

— u/rivkasaurusrex

56. Underrated: Dry Tortugas National Park, Florida

A fortress surrounded by blue water

"Lots of people visit the Florida Keys for vacation, but many don't know about Dry Tortugas National Park. To get there, you take a ferry from Key West, and it's so beautiful. You can explore the fort and snorkel in the crystal clear water."

— leahd472a94326

57. Underrated: Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

A golden bridge leading to a city

"It's usually overshadowed by Philadelphia, but Pittsburgh is severely underrated, in my opinion. The food scene is really good, and the arts and cultural districts are also very interesting. The Warhol Museum in particular is well worth a visit."

— TDiabeetus

58. Overrated: Montego Bay, Jamaica

A hillside town with colorful houses

"I recently went to Jamaica as part of a Caribbean cruise. Montego Bay, in particular, was very beautiful, but I felt like everything was a scam to take your money. I didn't feel safe anywhere I went, and every place we were taken on a tour required that we spend money on something. Despite the natural beauty, the whole country is treated like a trash can, and there was garbage everywhere. It was very sad to see."

— u/deleted

59. Underrated: Asheville, North Carolina

A cityscape at sunset

"If you like mountain towns, Asheville is a great little spot with lots to do, local bars, and a fun, relaxed atmosphere. In addition to the urban comforts, just outside of the city you can go skiing, snowboarding, and hiking."

Time Out , the global brand that inspires and enables people to experience the best of the city, has compiled the list to inspire travellers to Europe to experience the very best things to do, whether that’s a unique twist on a beach break, an activity-packed adventure or a cultural escape.

The list spans the whole continent and features trips including once-in-a-lifetime opportunities and hidden destinations which travellers will want to revisit again and again.

Those looking to escape crowded beaches are encouraged to head inland to the warm water and wild nature at a Portuguese river beach aka a praias fluviais. Those seeking the ultimate relaxation should head to the island of Saaremaa which is one of Estonia’s best kept secrets – home to the old town of Kuressaare offering the highest number of spas per capita in the world.

For foodies, what could be more chilled out than an ice cream crawl in Copenhagen? Or for adrenaline junkies there’s a 2,000-mile mountain bike trail through the Balkans opening in July 2024 where cyclists can join and tap out along the route. For those who want to experience everything Scotland has to offer but don’t have buckets of time, there’s the North East 250, a condensed Aberdeenshire loop that offers the very best of the country’s castles, scenery, wildlife and whisky. And finally, mountain pastures await those choosing a weekend experiencing the daily life of Pyrenean shepherds.

Grace Beard, Time Out Travel Editor said: “We all like the idea of summertime in Europe – long, lazy days in the Mediterranean sunshine, whiling away an evening people-watching in local bars – but the reality is often much less romantic, with overtourism, soaring prices and scorching temperatures blighting many a Euro Summer fantasy. But it doesn’t have to be that way – as our list of the best things to do this summer shows, a great summer holiday in Europe can take on many forms, from hopping around river beaches to road trips and outdoor art trails.”

I've visited 93 countries, 57 of them with kids. These 5 underrated spots are great places to enjoy with your family.

  • Karen Edwards has traveled to 93 countries, and 57 of them have been with her young children.
  • Edwards said that her family has had more fun exploring underrated spots than the popular ones.
  • Her favorites include Tanzania for its safari tours and Abu Dhabi for its vibrant festival scene.

Insider Today

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Karen Edwards , who blogs about her family's travels around the world. The following has been edited for length and clarity.

Since 2000, I've visited 93 countries and 57 of them have been with my four children who are all under the age of 10.

I am a nurse by background, but I have been blogging about traveling with my husband and kids since 2014. I cover a lot of off-the-beaten-track destinations and write itineraries for places I've been to, explaining how they work for families with children.

Many popular family destinations tend to be overcrowded. They're usually the ones that get a lot of media exposure or are shown in viral videos on social media. In America, it'd be places like Disneyland in California or Disney World in Florida, while for Europeans, it might be some of the Spanish resort areas.

Although my family and I have visited these places, we have always come away disappointed. They often lack educational experiences, feeling like pointless affairs.

I think traveling to underrated spots makes trips feel more exclusive and you can learn more about the cultures of the countries you visit — it also keeps you away from tourist traps.

We went on a safari tour in Tanzania

Our family visited Tanzania in 2019 in collaboration with a tourism brand. We were there for 12 days.

Our flights to the country were kind of expensive; we paid about $9,000 for our then-family of four, including a stop in Zanzibar at the end of the trip for a few days. However, overall, the entire trip didn't end up costing us that much.

We had some really unique experiences in Tanzania. We went to Mto Wa Mbu village , which is beneath a banana plantation, and we went on a safari tour in its Lake Manyara National Park .

Interestingly, Tanzania is one of the few places in the world where lions are known to climb trees. I remember seeing them sit in tall trees; it was quite unusual, but my kids really enjoyed how close they were to the animals.

Throughout our trip, we actually felt like we were experiencing life in Tanzania. Our campsite was on a river's edge in the depths of nature. It was nice not to feel surrounded by tourists.

My kids fell in love with Abu Dhabi's culture

Many people mistakenly believe that Dubai is a country, but in reality, it's a city in the United Arab Emirates, with Abu Dhabi being its capital.

My family and I moved to Abu Dhabi in 2021 and lived there for 18 months. The city does have a lot of similarities to glitzy and glam Dubai , but you get a more down-to-earth experience.

There are amazing festivals in Abu Dhabi where they display their culture in different formats, whether that be through local food or crafts. It does feel authentic because it's usually mainly locals participating and organizing them.

The city is also 1.5 hours away from Al Ain, which sits at the foot of  Jebel Hafeet , one of the tallest mountains in the region. Along the way up, you'll find many ancient artifacts, such as beehive huts, which have been there for thousands of years. At the top, you can watch incredible sunsets.

Related stories

The city also has the Al Ain Oasis , which uses an ancient irrigation system. It has these beautiful paved pathways that look like cobbled streets.

My kids loved Abu Dhabi and are constantly asking me to go back — they really liked all the cultural celebrations.

We love Sri Lanka so much, we're building a villa there

In 2022, my family and I moved to Sri Lanka from Abu Dhabi. We thought we'd have more family time here, and it was going to be an affordable place to live.

We're building a family-friendly villa here that should be completed by August. The area where we are building has a lot of nice cafes, bars, and restaurants nearby.

Overall, Sri Lanka is an amazing country that has so many diverse experiences. There are tea plantations, mountains, and beaches. As for wildlife, their national parks have loads of elephants and leopards.

On one occasion, we went on a safari boat tour to an isolated national park where we watched elephants swim across a lake and onto a tiny island. It was amazing.

The beaches in Sri Lanka are pristine. They have beautiful scenery with swaying coconut palm trees, clear water, and perfect waves. Our favorite is Kabalana Beach .

Because we're always on the beach, my children have learned how to surf. I think it's the most fun thing that we do on the weekends as a family.

The ski resorts and spas are amazing in Andorra

We visited Andorra in 2018 for about six days. It's a tiny country nestled in the Pyrenees between Spain. It's a two-hour drive from Barcelona and three hours from Toulouse, France.

The city has a unique fusion of cultures, though I think Catalonian is the strongest influence. During our trip, my family and I toured many ancient churches.

We also went to some amazing spas and resorts in Andorra. The hotel and ski system there is really family-friendly.

During our visit to the Grandvalira ski resort , my daughter learned how to ski and my husband got to snowboard — the resort has a kindergarten at the foot of its mountain, where kids can play or ski.

Andorra also has amazing spa facilities that are suitable for families and are sectioned off for different age groups.

Our trip was in collaboration with Andorra's tourism board, but I feel like it wasn't overly expensive in comparison to some other places around the world.

I was treated like family in Macedonia

Macedonia is a Balkan country just north of Greece. I haven't been there with children, but I wouldn't have any issues taking my kids there.

It has many beautiful small villages and it's great for skiing too.

The country is also home to one of the oldest and deepest lakes in Europe named Lake Orchid, which borders Albania. There's this beautiful, small village on the lake that has charming restaurant and a lovely atmosphere for relaxing and enjoying good food.

I visited the country in 2008, and then again in 2012 with my then-boyfriend and now-husband.

The first time I visited, I went with two girlfriends, and we were backpackers. We arrived in the middle of the night by bus and had no idea what we were doing. The bus driver just made a call, and a stranger came and picked us up in his car — I thought I was going to die.

The opposite happened. He took us back to his home with his family, and we stayed there with them for a few days. We ended up extending the trip because he and his family were so amazing.

They didn't speak a word of English, and we couldn't speak a word of their language either. We'd just gesture at each other, and they'd give us food and red wine.

I just totally fell in love with them and their country.

The Pyrenees mountains have undergone a 'revival of their local lifestyle' with local shepherds welcoming guests to spend time with them

Time Out's Stuart Butler describes the Pyrenees mountains as 'a gorgeously unspoilt spine of peaks separating France from Spain'.

Better still, the area has recently undergone a 'revival' of its local lifestyle, with many Pyrenean shepherds welcoming guests to spend time with them, Stuart says.

'You can learn about the shepherding life in the French Vallée d’Ossau, Vallée d’Aspe and in the high Pyrenees,' he reveals.

Away from Croatia's more popular island-hopping destinations of Brac and Hvar is 'a cluster of little-known islands' accessible via the Jadrolinija ferry's newly introduced 401 line, which sails from Zadar.

So says Time Out's Peterjon Cresswell, who recommends the islands of Ist, Olib, Silba and Premuda in particular.

'Sailings leave at reasonable times' and allow you 'to experience Croatia as it once was', he adds.

Go on a Copenhagen ice-cream crawl

The ice-cream scene in Denmark's capital is an underrated summer treat

The ice-cream scene in Denmark's capital is an underrated summer treat

'Copenhagen’s ice-cream scene, much like summer in this bijou city, is an underrated treat,' says Time Out's Laura Hall.

'When they’re not swimming in the harbour, dining alfresco and building sandcastles on the beaches half an hour away, sweet-toothed Danes will be eating ice cream.

'In the summer you’ll find soft ice – the Danish term for Mr Whippy ice creams – everywhere. It’s concealed in pastries at Andersen & Maillard bakery, and shows up at Coffee Collective as a "coffee soft ice", a tall swirl of vanilla ice cream dusted with chocolate powder on top of a dose of espresso.'

Road trip Scotland's North East 250

Loch Muick, above, is one of the highlights of Scotland’s North East 250

Time Out's Richard Franks describes this 250-mile Aberdeenshire loop as 'Scotland in miniature'.

Because 'it offers the very best of the castles, scenery, wildlife and whisky found elsewhere in the country'.

Highlights include Loch Muick, Braemar Castle, Glenlivet distillery and the beach in Portsoy.

Hunt for Albania's Cold War bunkers

An estimated 170,000 Cold War bunkers are strewn across Albania, including Tirana's BunkArt, pictured, which is now home to art galleries

Albania is home to an estimated 170,000 Cold War bunkers, according to Butler.

'Visiting as many of them as possible will take you on an Indiana Jones-style adventure to all four corners of the country,' he says.

'Created under Albania’s former Communist dictator, Enver Hoxha, some of these bunkers – such as Tirana’s BunkArt – are enormous multi-storey, atomic bomb-proof structures that now house impressive art galleries or museums showcasing the horror of the Hoxha period.'

Hike a web of trails in Greece 's new Sitia Geopark

Sitia Geopark is located in the rarely visited eastern half of Crete

Sitia Geopark is located in the rarely visited eastern half of Crete

The Unesco-classed Sitia Geopark is in the 'rarely visited eastern half of Crete island', reveals Time Out's Heidi Fuller-Love, and can be reached via a 40-minute bus ride from Sitia town.

She continues: 'It’s home to countless endangered species of flora and fauna - I saw a kettle of griffon vultures swooping low overhead as I clambered out of Zakros’ Gorge of the Dead, so-called because the Minoans once used the beehive of caves pocking the surrounding cliffs as a cemetery.'

Heidi adds that while there she 'sampled Cretan stuffed snails... and hiked off the calories along the Geopark’s web of thyme-scented trails'.

'Berlin’s not often thought of as a summertime destination, but it’s during the warmer months the city is at its most sociable - and beautiful,' says Time Out's Kate Bettes, who recommends spending 'a long weekend hunting down its sundown lookouts'.

Begin at Klunkerkranich, a club on the top-floor of a car park where you can 'see the sunset's orange light turning the Berlin TV Tower pink', she suggests, adding: 'In Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, hike past the waterfall in Viktoriapark to reach the highest point in the city, and sit at the feet of the forbidding cast iron Prussian war memorial for the sunset.

'Picnic in the grassy expanse of Tempelhofer Feld as evening falls. Take an afternoon cruise down the River Spree for some sundowners, or above the water with street buskers at Oberbaumbrucke.'

Spa away on Saaremaa island

Saaremaa is replete with saunas and swimming pools - the perfect place to 'spa away in'

Saaremaa island's Kuressaare Castle

Saaremaa island's Kuressaare Castle

'The island of Saaremaa is one of Estonia’s best-kept secrets,' declares Time Out's Shafi Musaddique, partly because 'it’s the perfect retreat to spa away in'.

He explains: 'There’s no shortage of spa hotels at affordable prices, replete with saunas and swimming pools, with the old town centre of Kuressaare having the highest number of spas per capita in the world.'

The island is also home to the 'spectacular' Kaali meteorite crater and the star-shaped Kuressaare Castle.

How to get there? Via propeller plane from Tallinn airport or 'land and ferry through western Estonia'.

Cycle the Balkans

The new cross-Balkan bike trail, opening this summer, covers eight countries over 2,090 miles

The new cross-Balkan bike trail, opening this summer, covers eight countries over 2,090 miles

Challenge yourself to a cycling adventure on the new cross-Balkan bike trail, opening in July 2024.

The route takes in eight countries and connects all of former Yugoslavia plus Albania over 2,090 miles (3,364km) of mapped-out roads and pathways, explains Time Out's Peterjon Cresswell.

'You may set out and tap out anywhere you like, of course, but following the emerald-green river Soca through Slovenia seems as gentle an introduction as any,' he writes.

'Venturing into the Goriska Brda wine region allows you to sample the white Rebulas and blue Pinots at bucolic hilltop wineries commanding panoramic views. For an urban experience thrown in, the Tito-built city of Nova Gorica should give you your fill of heroic statuary and fractured history.'

Relax on central Portugal's inland beaches

In central Portugal are river beaches with sun loungers and beach bars

In central Portugal are river beaches with sun loungers and beach bars

Those looking to escape crowded beaches are encouraged to head inland to the warm waters and wild nature of central Portugal's river beaches, also known as a 'praias fluviais'.

Time Out's Lucy Bryson says that there are several 'dotted around this under-the-radar part of Portugal'.

She adds: 'During the summer season, they're equipped with  lifeguards, sun loungers, and beach bars serving salty local olives washed down with dangerously affordable jugs of wine.'

Follow an outdoor art trail in the south of France

North of Aix-en-Provence is Chateau la Coste, where 'a contemporary art walk weaves around rows of grapevines'. One of the works there is Prune Nourry's Mater Earth (above), 'an enormous pregnant woman emerging from a grassy field'

Avoid the 'swarm of summer tourists in Provence' and head to the region's outdoor art spaces instead, advises Time Out's Alexis Steinman.

North of Aix-en-Provence is Chateau la Coste, where 'a contemporary art walk weaves around rows of grapevines'. The writer's favourite is Prune Nourry's Mater Earth, 'an enormous pregnant woman emerging from a grassy field'.

Then there's the 'Friche d’Escalette' in Marseille, where you can 'amble between hills and remnants of brick walls to see contemporary art like Jean Prouve’s movable pavilions'.

Then take a boat from Hyères to Ile de Porquerolles and visit the rotating exhibits at Villa Carmignac, a museum which is 'perched above idyllic beaches and breathtaking cliffs'.
