Program description.

The BS in Hospitality, Travel and Tourism Management prepares students for management positions in one of the largest economic sectors worldwide. Combining a thorough liberal arts program of study with industry- specific business classes, students gain in-depth knowledge in the areas of hospitality finance, sales and marketing, revenue management, special event planning, destination development, and food and beverage operations. Students learn how to develop new hotel and resort concepts, market tourism destinations, and manage tourism and convention bureaus. Frequent site visits, industry events, and guest speakers ensure that students make use of all the opportunities New York City has to offer, both in and out of the classroom. In addition, they gain hands-on experience through internships, which develop them into successful—and highly employable—industry professionals.

Program Requirements

Concentrations.

The program requires the completion of 128 credits, and students may choose one of six concentrations listed below.

The BS in Hospitality, Travel and Tourism Management prepares students for a wide range of careers in hotels, restaurants, catering companies, real estate and management services companies, online travel agencies, marketing and PR firms, destination marketing organizations, event companies and consulting firms. The degree has six concentrations:

Event Management

This concentration explores career opportunities in festivals, weddings and social events, trade shows, and experiential marketing.

The event sector is growing fast, and offers a wealth of career opportunities. Whether you are interested in festivals, weddings, business conventions or sporting events, this concentration will equip you with the skills and knowledge you need to succeed in this exciting field.

Event planning, design and production are a central focus of this concentration. Event planners/producers coordinate every detail of the event: from the venue and speakers to arranging for printed materials and audio-visual equipment. They develop the concept for the event, and liaise with suppliers and staff. Event planners/producers may work for non-profit organizations, associations, hotels, corporations, and government. Many are independent business owners and coordinate events for a range of clients.

Events can also play an important role in a company’s marketing strategy. Experiential or event marketing is a promotional strategy that involves face-to-face contact between companies and their customers at special events like concerts, fairs, and sporting events. Brands use event marketing entertainment (like shows, contests, or parties) to reach consumers through direct hand-to-hand sampling or interactive displays.

Marketing and Analytics

In this concentration, students study hospitality and travel sales and marketing, as well as strategies and processes that optimize a business’s revenues.

The marketing and analytics concentration provides students with in-depth knowledge of the marketing functions of hospitality businesses.  Professionals in marketing and branding roles need strong analytical skills as they conduct market research, oversee multimedia advertising campaigns, and consult with outside agencies, promotional representatives and corporate executives.

Marketers and revenue managers currently evolve in an increasingly digital and data-driven environment. They are tasked to develop and implement strategies to maximize the business's revenues and profitability. On the basis of daily reports, they make predictions of demand and make distribution channels and pricing decisions. They also leverage the power of loyalty programs and optimize the entire guest acquisition phase; in partnership with travel agencies - on and offline - and other travel intermediaries.

Leadership and Management

This concentration focuses on the operational aspects of hospitality businesses – a great concentration for budding general managers!

The leadership and management concentration provides students with in-depth knowledge of the operational aspects of hospitality businesses. This is an attractive concentration for budding general managers, as the concentration includes aspects of sales and marketing, food and beverage management, but also leadership and law. Hotel operations roles are available in a wide range of departments: front desk, catering, events, housekeeping and human resources. Professionals in operations oversee the daily activities of their teams, and aim to ensure guest satisfaction.

Hotel Real Estate Finance and Development

This concentration provides students with in-depth knowledge of financial management and the hotel development process.

The hotel real estate finance and development concentration provides students with in-depth knowledge of financial management and the hotel development process. Hotel finance careers may include responsibilities such as overseeing the financial processes of the hotel, maintaining audits and reports, producing monthly income statements, and coordinating budgets and forecasts. The hospitality sector is mostly associated with the hotel industry, however, many other asset classes fall into this sector, including large scale resorts, spas, timeshares, restaurants and casinos.

Another aspect of this concentration is hotel development and asset management. Many well-known hotel brand names do not own the building in which the hotel operates, but rather contract their management and brand name to the owner for a fee. Owners and real estate investment trusts employ analysts to maximize the returns earned by the property. Hotel investment professionals produce valuations, and make recommendations about the development of new assets or the remodeling of existing assets.

Travel and Tourism Development

This concentration prepares students for careers in destination marketing organizations, (online) travel agents, tour operators, airlines, cruise lines, PR firms, and visitor attractions.

The travel and tourism industry has shown remarkable resilience in the face of economic challenges, geopolitical conditions and natural disasters. It remains one of the largest and fastest growing industry sectors in the world. Graduate tourism degrees prepare students for a wealth of careers in the public, private and voluntary sectors. WTTC estimates that the travel and tourism sectors support 292 million jobs worldwide, or 1 in every 10 jobs.

The travel and tourism development concentration prepares students for careers in destination marketing organizations, (online) travel agents, tour operators, airlines, cruise lines, event companies, development agencies, marketing and PR firms and visitor attractions. Students will explore various aspects of this large and multi-faceted sector, including casinos, special interest tourism products, sports tourism and mega-events, entrepreneurship and destination marketing.

Entrepreneurship

In this concentration, students will learn the different aspects of the typical entrepreneurship journey: from ideation, to prototyping,  to business launch, and management as applied to hospitality.

Entrepreneurship plays a crucial role in innovation, economic development and competitiveness. The entrepreneurship concentration provides students with in-depth knowledge of the crucial role that entrepreneurship plays in the travel and hospitality business. It also provides them with the entrepreneurial and innovative mindset sought after by many employers. The courses offer an overview of the different aspects of the typical entrepreneurship cycle, from ideation to business launch and management. Courses in this concentration are experiential,  applying theory to real world problems and opportunities.

There are real opportunities within this sector for rewarding and exhilarating careers.

Why study travel and tourism management at aur.

There are few more appropriate and relevant places to earn a degree in tourism than in Rome, one of the world’s most important tourist destinations. Rome is often described as the world’s largest outdoor museum, and while this is certainly accurate, the city is anything but an artificial theme park. Cultural and Heritage Tourism Cultural and Heritage Tourism is a leading sector in Italy, fueled by its immense wealth of artistic, archaeological and architectural treasure, thanks to which it is ranked first in the world for the number of UNESCO World Heritage sites it contains. Students interested in specializing in this area of the travel and tourism industry may concentrate their degree studies in Cultural and Heritage Tourism.

Food Tourism Italy is (rightly) renowned around the world for its cuisine. An increased tourist interest in local food traditions and the farm-to-table movement have driven an explosion in the food tourism business. Italy is the world’s top producer of wine, a leading producer of fine olive oil, parmesan, and prosciutto, to name just a few products that make it such a heavyweight in the global food market. Students will analyze strategic choices and what those choices mean within the context of a travel and tourism business. Special emphasis is placed on the importance and application of an analysis of risk and its management within the context of a travel and tourism business.

This field trip course provides a hands-on opportunity to critically explore destination branding in Europe, and to consider the range of marketing strategies employed by regional governments, Destination Marketing Organizations (DMOs), local businesses and communities.

Marshall entered academia after a 12-year career in finance in the U.S. and Europe, in investment banking and risk arbitrage with firms such as Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette Securities Corp and BNP Paribas. Marshall is also a Trained Group Counselor. Marshall Langer has been an Adjunct Professor at AUR since 2004.

An economics specialist, Professor Prota publishes regularly on issues related to the specificity of Southeast Asian market transition with a particular focus on place and path-dependent trajectories of development. How to Study Hospitality Management

Running a company in any segment of the hospitality industry requires not only financial and marketing prowess, but also an understanding of how to create an inviting environment for guests.

The art and science of hosting strangers is an essential skill for people working in many kinds of businesses, including airlines, casinos, cruise ships, festivals, hotels and restaurants.

Running a company in any segment of the hospitality industry requires not only financial and marketing prowess, but also an understanding of how to create an inviting environment for guests. Cultivating that marketable skill set is the goal of associate, bachelor's and graduate programs in hospitality management.

What a Hospitality Management Degree Is and What Classes It Requires

The goal of any course of study in hospitality management is to train people to create and maintain spaces where others will immediately feel at home.

“Understanding how to take care of the customer is a foundational aspect of the hospitality discipline,” Angela Ramsey, senior director of communication at the University of Nevada—Las Vegas William F. Harrah College of Hospitality, explained in an email.

Hospitality management degrees are, foremost, degrees in business, says Michael Sabitoni, chair of the food and beverage management department and the international travel and tourism studies department at Johnson & Wales University in Rhode Island. They include classes in accounting, finance, human resources, law and technology, he says.

However, unlike a general business degree, a hospitality degree typically includes specialized coursework focusing on the hospitality industry, such as classes on food service business operations, event management principles, and hotel and resort leadership, Sabitoni says. An overview class about tourism is also typically included in hospitality management programs, and industry internships are often mandatory, he adds.

Many hospitality degree programs require students to participate in experiential learning by helping to operate a student-run hotel or restaurant. They may also contain classes on:

  • Eco-tourism or sustainable travel
  • Global tourism and special considerations involved with international trips
  • Customer service protocols
  • Assessing the quality of guest experiences
  • Specific types of hospitality establishments, such as country clubs, golf courses, resorts, stadiums, timeshares or theme parks
  • Nuances involved in planning certain kinds of events, such as conventions or weddings
  • Concerns that face certain demographics of customers, including women and people of color
  • Various types of tourism, including business trips and visits to cultural destinations or historical sites

Top Undergraduate Schools With Hospitality Management Majors

Many U.S. colleges and universities allow undergraduates to major in hospitality management, including multiple nationally renowned academic institutions. Cornell University of New York, an Ivy League college, has a school devoted to hospitality.

Exceptional hospitality programs are often based in major metropolitan areas that attract significant tourism. For example, New York University and Boston University in Massachusetts offer a hospitality management degree.

How to Know if a Hospitality Management Degree Is Right for You

An interest in the food and beverage sector, a love for travel or an interest in entertaining people may lead someone to consider pursuing a degree in hospitality management. But prospective students should be aware that the hospitality sector has leadership roles for people with all kinds of interests and personalities.

Though some managerial positions in the hospitality industry are customer-facing jobs that require significant people skills, there are also back-of-the-house managerial jobs that concentrate on logistics, Sabitoni says.

Significant cultural awareness and strong communication abilities are essential in hospitality. Foreign language skills are also valuable but not mandatory, Sabitoni says.

What You Can Do With a Hospitality Management Degree

Hospitality programs are designed to train future leaders in the sector.

“It can include anything within the hospitality vertical, from hotel investment companies to real estate firms to our big brands which are the Marriotts, the Hiltons, the Four Seasons, to data analytics companies to Googles to Amazons,” says Kate Walsh, dean of the Peter and Stephanie Nolan School of Hotel Administration at Cornell. “Anything that touches hospitality as a part of their business product is something where our students get involved.”

Real estate investment firms often invest in hotel buildings, so people with degrees in hospitality management sometimes find jobs in the real estate sector, Walsh says. Alumni of hospitality management programs sometimes become management consultants who concentrate on assisting companies in the hospitality industry, she adds.

Executive and director roles in the industry typically require at least a bachelor's degree. Many high-level leadership positions at U.S. hospitality firms pay annual salaries above $70,000, according to an article published by Monster.com, a job website.

In 2020, graduates of Cornell's Nolan School had an average base salary of slightly over $69,000 and an average bonus of nearly $15,000, according to the school's employment report .

Considerations for Potential Hospitality Students

Aspiring hospitality managers should be aware of trends that may affect them when they enter the industry, experts say.

This sector has severe labor shortages at hotels and restaurants, many of which laid off workers due to pandemic-related safety measures and now have struggled to replace those workers even after raising wages.

Because of these staffing concerns, many hospitality companies have introduced initiatives to recruit and retain talented staff, improve working conditions, increase job satisfaction and reduce employee turnover, Walsh says.

When comparing hospitality programs, prospective students should investigate whether those programs include experiential learning opportunities, experts say, noting that hands-on projects are one of the best ways to gain hospitality skills. It’s also optimal if hospitality schools offer courses on design, which can inform aesthetic choices about how a hospitality venue looks, according to experts.

“I think the industry needs innovative thinkers," Walsh says. "They need people who think big culturally, who are comfortable with different modes of work, so it’s a great time to join the industry. The industry is trying to be extremely intentional in providing compelling career paths.”

GTO 320 – Bourbon, Beer & Spirits (3) The history, culture, and production of bourbon, beer, and spirits. Study of brewing and distilling tourism, with an emphasis on community impact, marketing, and sustainable practices. Prerequisite: Age requirement ≥ 21.

GTO 325 – Culture & Consumption of Wine (3) An exploration of interactions between wine, culture, and tourism. The interdisciplinary Master of Science in Travel Technology and Analytics, offered jointly by the College of Engineering and Computer Science (Departments of Computer Science; Industrial Engineering and Management Systems; Civil, Environmental, and Construction Engineering) and the Rosen College of Hospitality Management (Departments of Tourism, Events, and Attractions; Hospitality Services), introduces graduate students to the technical aspects of big data analytics, including predictive analytics, algorithm design and models for SMART-cities, SMART-technologies and travel systems, and service systems quality engineering, in the specific context of global travel and tourism. The value and importance of such a program is demonstrated by travel and tourism and is the number one industry globally with immense economic, social, cultural and environmental impacts. Locally, the program promises to deliver significant value for the industry benefitting from a large number of visitors to the state and especially central Florida.

This powerful industry with $8.3 trillion in economic benefits globally, which functions at the intersection of engineering and management, is being transformed by rapidly increasing technological innovations and advances and is adapting to these changes by creating new employment opportunities to match. The dynamic nature of the industry and technological advances reveal the need for a workforce with advanced skills: fluency in data science and analytics, understanding of complex travel systems, strategic problem solving, big-picture thinking, technical knowledge, and practical skills aligned with technological advances. The changing nature of travel and tourism employment reveals emerging positions in areas of online travel agencies [OTA], global distribution systems [GDS], data analytics, data architecture, predictive analytics, mobile devices, travel apps, geolocation, data visualization, data translation, programming, interface design, virtual reality [VR], augmented reality [AR], hologram technology, travel click technology, business intelligence [BI], social media management, SMART-city design and development, and SMART-technologies and travel systems. The broader travel industry and its subsectors (transportation, lodging, and attractions) are experiencing the disruptive effects of direct and indirect distribution impacted by mobile devices, e-commerce, role of IT in distribution and dynamic pricing, and a highly perishable inventory (e.g., hotel rooms, airline seats) as well as those of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning and becoming increasingly more dependent on analytics as a key facet of business strategy.

Newly admitted students choosing to complete this program exclusively via UCF online classes may enroll with a reduction in campus-based fees.

Graduate students may receive financial assistance through fellowships, assistantships, tuition support, or loans. Fellowship Information

Fellowships are awarded to highly qualified students based on academic merit. They are paid to students through the Office of Student Financial Assistance, based on instructions provided by the College of Graduate Studies. Fellowships are given to support a student's graduate study and do not have a work obligation. The program will be 30 credits (18 core/required and 12 electives). There will be no thesis requirement, however, a semester-long applied capstone project (involving industry and approved by the program director) will be required. The program will provide employable technical skills including the development of algorithms, discrete choice models, service systems quality engineering, machine learning, digital marketing, and big data management, and computer systems to extract insight from big data. The foregoing will be appropriately contextualized within the global travel industry and its trajectory toward increasing technological innovations that continue to drive the industry. The curriculum includes six (6) required courses that ensure that students have skills in algorithms and statistical techniques for extracting information in addition to awareness of the global travel and tourism industry including. Although courses can generally be taken in any order, the first two (2) required (co-requisite) courses serve as pre-requisites for all remaining courses in the program.

This course will support you to develop your operational, management and communication skills to deliver an excellent customer experience.

The focus of the course is on understanding the travel and tourism industry as a business. 

You will learn about:

  • the structure and organisation of the tourism industry
  • how the industry is changing and why
  • the needs of customers
  • the development of new tourism products and services 
  • how new products and services are brought to the market. 

Examples and case studies are taken from a range of different companies and organisations in the public and private sectors from all regions of the world.

The diverse module options and the final year project will give you the opportunity to explore a particular area of tourism interest, which can help you identify and work towards your career goals.

You can choose to take this course with a work placement of 40 weeks (1400 hours) after Level 5. This can be in any sector of the travel and tourism industry, either in the UK or abroad. It will allow you to expand your network, gain paid experience and enhance your professional skills. Once our placement is over, you will return for your final year of studies.

*As we are in unprecedented and unpredictable times, there is no guarantee that you will be successful in securing a placement in the UK in the future.

If you choose a course with a placement/internship route we would like to advise you that if a placement/internship opportunity does not arise when you are expected to undertake the placement then the University will automatically transfer you to the non-internship route. Compulsory modules

Introduction to travel and tourism.

This module aims to provide students with understanding of concepts concerned with travel and tourism. It familiarises students with the operating characteristics of the tourism industry and the business relationships between its sectors. The module adopts a multidisciplinary approach, thus developing a wide range of competencies.

Professional Skills for Tourism Management

The module is divided into two main areas: students’ academic development and employability. The first part of the module provides students with some of the skills needed to study at the UKHE level; such as essay and report writing, academic referencing and presentation skills. This aspect of the module seeks to provide students with a firm foundation for later, more detailed academic and research work at Level 5 and 6. 

In terms of professional employability, the module is designed to equip students with knowledge and understanding pertinent to employment and with skills to assist them to enhance their employment prospects.

Travel and Tourism Finance and Planning

This module will provide the knowledge related to the underlying concepts of profitability in financial and economic terms – the principles of supply and demand, costs and revenues – and the relentless desire amongst many tourism organisations to reduce costs and grow ancillary revenues. The module will also analyse the concepts and principles as to how tourism organisations attempt to obtain the capital they require in order to operate and grow.

Worldwide Tourist Destinations

This module aims to introduce students to the role of physical, human, political and economic geography in the travel and tourism industry. It develops your understanding of the complexities of global travel and the key geographic determinants of tourism destinations. This module develops academic knowledge and practical skills relevant in the tourism industry.

Tourism Service Operations

This module seeks to represent a contextualization of the principles of tourism service operations. This will be achieved through the application of ideas concepts and theories applied to the travel, tourism and transportation industry. Here the use of examples and case studies will be central to the delivery of the module.

Tourism Culture and Society

This module aims to engender an understanding of the role played by culture upon representations of people, populations and pasts in the tourism marketplace. The purpose of this module is to explore the embodiment of culture in contemporary international tourism movements. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach this module will require students to inspect the relationship between tourism and culture in society in different destination areas.

This module explores talent management, which has become an area of significant importance in international HR practice, as retaining excellent employees plays an important role in the strategic competitiveness of an organisation. This is never so important than in today's ever-changing work environment, where businesses operate in an environment of not only risk but also volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous (VUCA).

The module will develop your understanding of the requirements for entrepreneurial leadership, which is essential in enabling the dynamic capabilities of the organisation. This module aims to develop your understanding of the requirements for successful leadership and talent management in an ever-changing world.

Applied Research Methods

The module aims to provide you with broad knowledge and understanding of the theory and practice of research. It focuses on the use of a range of different research methods and approaches. The module encompasses the understanding and application of appropriate research methodologies, research approaches, research designs, forms of data collection, research statistics and report writing and presentation.

Managing Sustainable Tourism

This module focuses on the importance and evolution of the concept of sustainable development and how it applies to the context of tourism. The module identifies the core principles of sustainable development and looks at the implementation challenges faced by policymakers and destination managers in making all forms of tourism more sustainable.

Travel Technology and Innovation

The module examines how technology influences and changes tourism products, operations, processes and tourist behaviour in modern society. A review of global technological trends will also be undertaken to determine the cultural significance of technology to specific tourism societies and tourism businesses. The emphasis throughout is upon how we might more effectively address the challenge of creating and sustaining competitiveness in tourism organisations through the mechanisms of technology and innovation.

Digital Marketing and Consumer Behaviour

In this module, you will be introduced to the dynamic and changing world of digital marketing and communications. The importance of creating and sustaining internal and external digital communications as well as delivering the online customer experience are explored. The module also aims to offer you an overall perspective of the aspects of consumer behaviour in a digital age.

Leadership and Talent Management with Placement (Placement students only)

This module explores talent management, which has become an area of significant importance in internationally HR practice, as retaining excellent employees plays an important role in the strategic competitiveness of an organisation. This is never so important than in today's ever-changing work environment, where businesses operate in an environment of not only risk but also volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous (VUCA). The module will develop your understanding of the requirements for entrepreneurial leadership, which is essential in enabling the dynamic capabilities of the organisation.

Optional modules

Tourism fieldwork (overseas fieldwork).

An overseas field trip during which students will research cultural and heritage tourism through observing current challenges such as visitor management, tourist and local interaction and diversification of the tourism offer. 

Note that the cost of this module is not included in the tuition fees for the course.

Global Contemporary Issues in Travel and Tourism

This module presents a dynamic overview of global contemporary trends and issues in the travel and tourism industry. It therefore aims to identify and analyse some of the key current issues that are pertinent to the travel and tourism sector worldwide. It also aims to equip students with a deeper understanding of the background, nature and implications of the identified issues.

Strategic Management and Analytics

In this module, students will develop core analytical and evaluation skills in recognising and interpreting how organisations maintain and develop competitive advantage through the use of analytics and strategic management tools. The application of analytics is a key part of this, including the concept of data, together with the application of analytical skills to select data to inform the organisation’s strategic decision making processes. Students will also be able to interpret relevant data and its implications for the organisation, together with evaluating how the organisation can use the data to support strategic management decisions.

Revenue and Distribution Management

This module aims to provide students with a systematic understanding in the theory and practice of revenue management and its impact on hospitality and hotel businesses as well as their customers. It seeks to provide the students with knowledge and skills to enable them to critically analyse and evaluate market condition, pricing strategies, inventory control tactics and customer value assessment in order to make appropriate management decisions that enable hospitality organisations to achieve sustainable financial success.

Dissertation

The aim of the dissertation module is to provide students with the opportunity to critically review, analyse and evaluate a topic of their choice related to the subject area of the course that they are studying. This is best done by conducting research in that topic and presenting the outcomes in a thesis. The module builds on knowledge and understanding that students may have achieved as part of an introductory research methods module. However, this is a self-contained module and it is not a pre-requisite to have been previously studied an introductory research module.

Tourism Risk and Opportunities

Tourism destinations and tourism businesses are becoming increasingly exposed to various risks and prone to disasters due to global environmental changes and security challenges. This module provides a strategic approach to understanding the nature of tourism risks, and learning how organisations could plan for and manage such risks in order to minimise, or even turn them into opportunities.

Niche Tourism

This module covers the current debates in one of the key areas affecting the tourism industry – its fragmentation into a number of specific markets and the development of niche products. It, therefore, aims to develop a knowledge and understanding of the niche tourism provision globally. 

In doing so, the module will discuss a range of macro and micro socio-economic and environmental influences pertaining to the growth and development of niche tourism. It will also examine the influence of national and transnational tourism development policy relevant to niche tourism and consider the implications of this for tourists, the host communities and the wider tourism industry.

Tourism and Events in the Global Context (TEGC)

This module will take an explicit international approach. Tourism and Events will combine theory and practise which will address challenges and opportunities globally. You’ll examine the impacts and benefits globalization has on the tourism and events industry.

Tourism and Digital Futures

The module focuses on the digital futures of tourism. The module will examine the reasons for digital transformation within the tourism industry, which are related to innovation, the creation of new structures, and the implementation of a new culture, processes and technology. The module will also look at the premise that travellers have changed and how tourism businesses can develop new opportunities to meet their expectations and enrich their tourism experiences.

Looking for BSc (Hons) International Tourism Management with Foundation Year?

Mature applicants (aged 21+): If you do not hold the qualifications listed but have relevant work experience, you are welcome to apply. Your application will be considered on an individual basis.

Level 5 (year 2) entry To directly enter the second year of this course you will need to show appropriate knowledge and experience. For example, you are an ideal candidate if you have 120 undergraduate credits at Level 4 or a CertHE in a related subject area.

Level 6 (year 3) entry To directly enter the third year of this course you need to show appropriate knowledge and experience. For example, you are an ideal candidate if you have 240 undergraduate credits (at Levels 4 and 5), a DipHE, Foundation Degree or HND in a related subject area.

You need to meet our English language requirement - a minimum of IELTS 5.5 for each of the 4 individual components (Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening). Visit our English language requirements page  for information on other English language tests we accept. 

You also need academic qualifications at the same level as UK applicants. In some countries where teaching is in English, we may accept local qualifications. Check for local equivalents .

Dr Peter Smith

Peter Smith is the Course Leader for BSc (Hons) International Tourism Management programme at the London Geller College of Hospitality and Tourism. Peter has over 12 years’ experience teaching and leading tourism programmes at University level.

Peter’s research is interdisciplinary, focusing on the sociology of tourism. He is the co-author (with Jim Butcher) of Volunteer Tourism: The lifestyle politics of international development (Routledge, 2015).

Peter worked in the independent travel sector for many years. Immediately prior to embarking on an academic career, Peter was the UK Customer Relations Manager for STA Travel, the UKs leading student/youth travel company, where he was responsible for leading and implementing the company’s national customer relations strategy. Peter draws on his industry experience to inform his teaching, modules and wider curriculum development.

Peter regularly appears in the media and at public events discussing travel, tourism and mobility related issues. He has been interviewed for Radio 4 The World Tonight, Radio 5 live Nicky Campbell and presented an opinion piece on BBC London television news.

He has given guest lectures at a number of HE institutions including, Kings College London, University of Brighton, London Metropolitan University and Canterbury Christ Church University. Outside academia Peter has spoken at and participated in public debates for a range of organisations including: the Royal Institute of British Architects, Royal Anthropological Institute /Development Studies Association, The Cheltenham Science Festival, Clarke Mulder Purdie, and the Battle of Ideas annual festival in London.

Our International Tourism Management students attended World Travel Market in London’s ExCell Centre.

As well as the opportunity to network with industry professionals, they attended round table discussions and speeches about challenges facing the global tourism industry, sustainability and graduate job opportunities.

Course Leader, Dr Peter Smith explained, “The World Travel Market is an annual event held in London and is an invaluable opportunity for our students to meet representatives from all over the world showcasing their destinations. Students can meet and chat with industry professionals in a relaxed yet informative environment.”

Our International Tourism Management students recently completed a 4-day field trip to Madrid, as part of the Level 5 (Year 2)  Tourism Fieldwork  module.

Students researched cultural and heritage tourism in the Spanish capital, visiting sites including old town, the Plaza Mayor, Palacio Real, Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, and Catedral de la Almudena. 

Course leader, Dr Peter Smith said, “Madrid is a fantastic city for students to observe and research current tourism management challenges such as visitor management, tourist and local interaction and diversification of the tourism offer, in a European context.

With input from leading organisations, we designed the core units on this course to give you a thorough introduction to managing a tourism business. You can also choose to learn a new language such as Spanish, Modern Arabic or Japanese.

As well as taught classes, you’ll learn by working on projects and doing your own research. Your final year research project is a chance to explore an area in more detail based on your studies or work experience.

Tourism Operations Management

The management of tourism operations for competitive advantage within the global tourism industry requires knowledge and application of key operational management theories and models.

Destination Manchester

Destination Manchester: England's second largest city tourist destination and the living-laboratory for your studies. Explore what makes a successful international tourist destination and help to solve a real-world problem for a tourism company.

Financial Management for Managers

Understanding financial management is a vital skill for all managers of profitable companies. Learn how to analyse financial statements, plan budgets and use financial data to inform decision making.

Marketing for Tourism

Students will develop marketing skills for tourism, learning how to recognise the importance of marketing as a role and function; as well as apply the marketing mix to illustrate different tourist markets and needs.

During this year you will study six 15 credit units. Please note that the following list of units is indicative and may be subject to change.

Researching Tourism

Understanding how to appraise and apply research methods is a critical skill for undergraduates and this knowledge will be developed through this unit.

Industry Active

This unit will identify the variety of job roles within the tourism sector. It will enable students to develop their knowledge and understanding of the essential skills required to complete the application process for employment.

International Tourist Experience Design

Tourist experiences are designed and managed by tourism businesses, yet experiences become meaningful when personalised by tourists. Students will explore how new business approaches centring on the tourist have been devised.

People Management and Development

Students will develop knowledge and understanding of the theories, strategies, policies and practices that underpin the management and development of human resources in organisations particularly in the tourism industry.

Tourism Destination Fieldwork

Students will conduct fieldwork at a destination to assess local challenges.

The Business of Tour Operators

Students will examine the role of tour operators in the tourism supply and distribution chain. A focus will be on their partnerships with key stakeholders so ensuring a sustainable and ethical approach to business.

During this year you will study four 15 credit units and a 30 credit unit. Please note that the following list of units is indicative and may be subject to change.

Global Tourism Development

A global view of tourism as a tool to achieve the broader sustainable development goals in varying economies is provided. Different tourism development paths and their challenges, limitations and benefits will be critiqued.

The Tourism Graduate

With graduation on the horizon, you’ll focus on harnessing your personal and professional skills, as well as behaviours. You’ll have opportunity to engage in a range of activities, which might include mentoring with an employer in a tourism management role or a cutting-edge mock assessment centre experience, helping you become a sought-after and career-ready graduate.

Tourism Crisis and Risk Management

Within the global tourism industry, crisis and risk management is an increasingly important area for consideration. Students will be exposed to the interrelationships and stakeholder roles during a critical incident. 

Strategic Tourism Management

Students will explore the nature of strategy and strategic thinking, as well as the complexity of managing the strategic challenges found within the contemporary international tourism business environment. 

Research Project (30 credits)

Students undertake a substantial project based on work experience or academic research.

All of the books required for the course are available from the library. The University also has PC labs and a laptop loan service. However, many students choose to buy some of the core textbooks for the course and/or a laptop.

Which are the best universities for travel and tourism Choosing which university you study at and indeed which course is best for you is a very important decision. Not only will it affect the next three years (or longer) of your life but it is likely to guide the course of your career and what opportunities will be available to you. 

League tables can be really confusing as there are so many different lists out there! One of the most reputable sources is the Guardian , where courses have been ranked according to subject area. Remember, there is more to consider than simply where a university is ranked (like research output, funding opportunities, teaching and excellence (TEF) score etc), but for those of you interesting in studying travel and tourism this list is a good place to start. 

Some of the institutions on the Guardian list are not included below. This is because courses are grouped into ‘Hospitality, Leisure and Tourism’. Because of this, courses in nutrition, sports and business are included. Universities that don’t offer any courses related to travel and/or tourism have not been included in this article.

The top 10 best universities for travel and tourism in the UK

De Montfort

Based in Leicester, De Montfort offer various courses that fall into the travel and tourism bracket – BA Hons degrees in Arts and Festivals Management can be combined with dance or drama, or you could choose to study Global Arts Management. Another option is Arts and Festivals Management.

The University of Lincoln offers a BA in International Tourism Management. This includes a one-year work placement, so students can get amazing real-world experience as part of the course. They also offer masters degrees in this field, as well as an International Hospitality Management BA degree.

Central Lancashire 

UCLAN, as it is known, offers various courses in the Tourism, Hospitality and Events Management area. International Hospitality Management and International Tourism Management are two popular undergraduate courses here. They also offer ‘top up’ courses in hospitality and tourism management.

Glasgow Caledonian

This brilliant Scottish university offers International Tourism and Events Management as a full-time, four-year BA hons degree.

Coventry University offers courses in Tourism and Hospitality Management as well as International Tourism and Hospitality Management. You can also study HNCs and HNDs in Tourism and Hospitality Management. They, too, offer top-up courses. This is one of the best universities for travel and tourism in terms of the different levels of study offered.

Falmouth 

Located in Cornwall , one of the UK’s most beautiful areas, Falmouth offer a few related courses. One of these is Sustainable Tourism Management. With the boom in sustainable travel, this is a really interesting option. Others include Sustainable Festival Management and Creative Events Management.

Edinburgh Napier

You can choose from a variety of courses here. From International Tourism Management to International Tourism and Airline Management there is a wide range of options. International Tourism & Marketing Management, International Festival & Event Management with Tourism and International Hospitality Management & Tourism make it five. For something different, like the airline aspect, this is one of the best universities for travel and tourism.

Ulster 

Based in beautiful Ireland , Ulster offers two relevant courses: International Travel and Tourism Management, and International Hospitality Management. Both are BSc (Hons).

Greenwich University in London offers a Tourism Management course. You can choose to take this with a language, too. There is an extended four-year option, meaning you can walk away with an incredible skill set ready for a job in the tourism industry.

Bournemouth

Choose from full or top-up courses here. Options include Tourism Management as well as International Hospitality & Tourism Management, or International Hospitality Management.

The best universities for travel and tourism in the UK: 11-30

Another Southern university, Essex has a wide range of options too. Choose from Hotel Management or opt for Tourism Management, a 3-or-4-year course with a year abroad or placement year included in the latter. They also offer Hospitality Management, Events Management and more.

Sheffield Hallam

International Hospitality and Tourism Management, with a business option too, is a great course here. You can choose to take International Tourism Management instead, however, and combine it with French, Spanish or German if you want to. With a range of short courses and top-up available too, it’s no surprise that Sheffield Hallam is on the list of best universities for travel and tourism.

Huddersfield

There are fewer options here, but they do offer Business with Travel and Tourism Management as a 4-year sandwich course. You can take Events Management as a full time course, though. This can be a great ‘in’ to the tourism industry!

Oxford Brookes

At Oxford Brookes, you can take International Hospitality and Tourism Management as a full-time BSc (Hons) course. They also offer Marketing and Events Management as a 4-year sandwich course.

Manchester Met

Located in one of the cities with the best nightlife in the UK, as well as one of the best music scenes, Manchester Met is a great choice. They offer an International Tourism Management degree, too. You can do this as a 3-year course or make it four years with a foundation year. They also offer an International Hospitality Business Management degree.

This is another uni with a wide range of options. From Tourism Management BSc (Hons) to International Tourism and Hospitality Management you’ll be spoilt for choice. They offer Tourism and Aviation Management too. This is another brilliant specialised degree in the field. Sunderland offers foundation degrees and top-ups too!

Queen Margaret 

Located in Edinburgh, QMU have two related courses. These are Events and Festival Management, and International Hospitality and Tourism Management. Both are full-time, four-year BAs.

Canterbury Christ Church

At CCC, ‘Tourism Studies’ can be combined with many different degrees. These include Business Management, Digital Media, International Relations, Psychology, Sports & Exercise Science, and many, many more. They also offer a standalone Tourism Management course. For combing this with your other passions, this has to be one of the best universities for travel and tourism.

Located in the North West of England, this small but lovely university offer various related courses. International Tourism Management can be combined with a language, or with Marketing Management. There is also a ‘Professional Placement Year’ option. You can also combine Events Management and Business Management with the above, or opt for Events and Festivals Management as a standalone course.

Strathclyde

Up in Scotland, Strathclyde Uni is a popular choice. Hospitality and Tourism Management is a four year course here. It can be combined with various other subjects, like French or Finance, Marketing or Accounting. There is also an International Business degree available.

Here you can take Hospitality, Tourism and Events Management as a BA (Hons). You can also choose from standalone Events Management, or International Tourism Management.

Arts University Bournemouth

There isn’t as much choice here, but their Creative Events Management course still gets great reviews. It’s a 3-year, full-time course.

At Derby, you can study International Tourism Management or International Hospitality Management. Both can include a foundation year. There is also an Events Management course available here.

Leeds Beckett

Choose from Events Management, International Tourism Management or Hospitality Business Management. Some can be combined with marketing, too!

Birmingham 

In terms of studying travel and tourism related courses at the University of Birmingham, there isn’t much choice – Applied Golf Management Studies might get you into travelling, though! However, courses like Hospitality and Tourism Management at the University College Birmingham are accredited by UoB.

South Wales

The University of South Wales is a great choice. Located in Pontypridd, you can choose from a variety of related courses. Hotel and Hospitality Management is an interesting 3-year BA (Hons), and the university also offers International Events Management as a 3 or 4 year course.

The variety of courses at Surrey make it one of the best universities for travel and tourism. International Hospitality and Tourism Management, International Tourism Management and International Tourism Management make up the bulk of this department. These courses can be done over 3, 4 or even 5 years. Combine with a foundation year, or with a course in Transport.

Cardiff Met

Degrees here are 3 years, or 4 to include a foundation degree. Choose from International Hospitality Management or International Tourism Management.

Robert Gordon

Located in gorgeous Aberdeen, you can study International Tourism or Hospitality Management here. They are both 4-year courses.

Northampton

Northampton has a variety of options. You can study International Tourism Management as a top-up, with a foundation year, alongside accounting or just as a standalone 3-year course. They also offer some Events Management degrees.

The best universities for travel and tourism in the UK: 31-45

London south bank.

South Bank offer some really exciting degrees, meaning it could be a great choice if you’re looking for the best universities for travel and tourism. Tourism and Hospitality Management and Events and Entertainment Management are on offer here.

West London

University of West London is easily one of the best universities for travel and tourism in terms of the wealth of choice they offer. From International Tourism Management (wth foundation and placement years available) to Hospitality Entrepreneurship, there is something for everyone. They also offer degrees in Culinary Arts Management and Air Transport Management!

Hertfordshire

At Hertfordshire, Tourism and International Tourism degrees can be combined with various languages such as Japanese or German. Event Management and Business degrees with tourism aspects are also on offer here.

Liverpool John Moores

In one of the most vibrant cities in the world, LJMU is a popular university choice. Here you can study International Tourism Management or Events Management.

There are three different Event Management degrees on offer at Chichester, which might get you into the tourism sector. However, there are no degrees focused specifically on travel or tourism here.

Bucks New University

At Bucks, you can study International Tourism Management with Air Travel. This is offered as a 3 year course, or 4 years with a foundation year. They also offer Event, Festivals and Venue Management.

Anglia Ruskin

ARU offers Tourism Management as part of their Business degrees. This can include a placement or foundation year, and they have an accelerated (2 year) option too.

Here, you can study International Tourism Management as a standalone course or with Spanish or Mandarin.

Trinity Saint David

Located in Carmarthen, Wales, Trinity Saint David offers a wide variety of related courses making it one of the best universities for travel and tourism. These include UK Tourism Management and International Hotel Management with a placement year. Other courses include International Leisure Resort Management and Events and International Festivals Management. There are so many options here.

East London

From Airline and Airport Management to Tourism Management there is plenty of choice here. With courses as specific as Hospitality Management with Revenue Analytics, there is something for everyone!

A tourist hotspot, Brighton also offers some great travel and tourism courses. These include International Event Management and International Tourism Management. Both can be combined with Marketing.

Westminster

There are a few tourism courses here. These are Tourism Management (also offered as a 1 year top-up course), Tourism & Events Management and Tourism Planning & Management.

Tourism and Travel Management as well as Events Management are on offer here. These can include foundation years, too. Tourism and Travel Management is offered as a top-up course, and Events Management can be combined with Marketing.

West of Scotland

Tourism Management, a 2-year course, and Events Management, a 4-year course, are available here. Both are full-time BA (Hons).

Bedfordshire

If you want choice, look at Bedfordshire. From Marketing with International Tourism Management to Travel, Aviation & Tourism Management, there are so many options. Courses can be altered to include placement or foundation years too.

Berks visitors bureau hires new leader to help boost tourism

A pr. 25—The Reading and Berks County Visitors Bureau has chosen a new leader to replace its longtime president, the nonprofit announced Thursday.

Heather Zimmerman of West Lawn, who last served as executive director of the Kutztown Folk Festival, begins May 20 as president and CEO.

The bureau, which does business under the name Pennsylvania's Americana Region, works to increase tourism in Berks and that will be Zimmerman's primary focus, officials said.

"Heather has extensive knowledge about the industry, and we look forward to working with her as we continue to promote the outstanding features of Berks County," said Cathy Wegener, board president.

Since 2003 the bureau has been led by President and CEO Crystal Seitz, who will transition into retirement over the next several months.

Zimmerman is a Berks native and a graduate of Kutztown University with a background in hospitality and tourism.

She said that through social media and digital marketing the bureau is now able to reach more people in more places than it once could have dreamed of, which helps bring more visitors to Berks.

Part of what makes the county stand out, she said, is its diversity of attractions, events and businesses. That means it has something to draw tourists of all types, including those who live here, she said.

"We run the gamut here," she said.

For the visitors bureau she will implement the organization's strategic plan, develop opportunities that advance its goals, oversee daily operations and strive to advance the role of tourism in Berks through advocacy, community awareness and relationship building, bureau officials said.

In essence, she will work to grow tourism in the area, they said.

"I am excited to continue the hard work of Crystal and her team and find new ways to develop and promote tourism in our area," Zimmerman said. "I look forward to introducing visitors to all we have right here in our backyard."

A state report studying travel and tourism spending across Pennsylvania in 2022 showed that visitors' direct spending in Berks reached $983.2 million that year, surpassing 2019's pre-COVID-19 spending by 15% and far surpassing the amount spent during the pandemic years.

In addition, hospitality-related jobs in Berks grew to 6,550 in 2022 from 5,970 in 2021, and labor income rose to $228.4 million from $205.5 million during the same period.

In her most recent position, Zimmerman helped revitalize the Kutztown Folk Festival with new vendors, rebranding, new marketing materials and a new website, visitors bureau officials said. Under her direction, USA Today ranked the nine-day celebration as one of North America's top cultural festivals in 2023 and 2024.

Zimmerman also has hotel experience, having served as director of sales and operations of the Hampton Inn & Suites, Kutztown, which she helped open in 2019. Before that, she was the area manager of two local hotels for more than eleven years.

She is on the bureau's board, is the former board chair of Penn State Berks' Hotel Restaurant and Institutional Management Advisory Committee and a former board member of the Northeast Berks Chamber of Commerce.

Quzhou launches week of tourism promotions in Shanghai

Quzhou City in neighboring Zhejiang Province launched a week of activities on campus and at residential communities in Shanghai to promote its tourism before the May Day holiday.

The Nankong Culture Week of Quzhou has been held at Fudan University and will run through Friday, showcasing the city's intangible cultural heritage gems on campus.

About two hours by high-speed rail from Shanghai, Quzhou is known as the second hometown of the descendants of Confucius. In history, the offspring of Confucius were forced to leave their hometown due to war or political reasons, and Quzhou was their dwelling place in the south.

Kaihua paper, crowned a "pearl of Chinese handmade paper" originated in Kaihua County of Quzhou and is known for its delicate texture. The paper can be maintained for thousand of years and is used as the material of acceptance letters of the university.

At the bazaar, techniques of Quzhou intangible cultural heritage items such as Kecheng paper-cutting, Longyou bamboo plaiting, Changshan eggshell carving, and Keshan diancha (making finely ground powder from processed green tea) are displayed.

An exhibition of Yudong farmers' paintings features many works themed on folk traditions and customs regarding China's 24 solar terms and the rural development of Quzhou.

Students and staff members are invited to sip Quzhou tea and taste local spicy delicacies at the bazaar.

Quzhou's agricultural produce and folk music concerts are also part of the activities during the Quzhou Week on campus.

Quzhou is part of a 1,995-kilometer "tourism avenue," Union Route 95, stringing nine 5A (China's top grade) and 87 4A tourist attractions spanning four cities in four provinces, with the others Huangshan in Anhui Province, Nanping in Fujian Province, and Shangrao in Jiangxi Province.Town.

The union hosted a community festival in Wujing Town in Minhang District on Wednesday with Quzhou bringing its Wuju Opera performance, local delicacies such as sesame cake, and Changshan sugar figures.

Quzhou, as a nationally renowned historic and cultural city, is home to more than 150 tourist attractions. These include the Jianglangshan Mountain Scenic Area, the Longyou Grottos, the Confucius Temple and Family Residence, and Jiulong Lake Scenic Area.

During the May Day holiday, activities will be staged on Shuiting Street, a historical block in Quzhou, and at Nianbadu Ancient Town.

Amanda's travel blog at NotABallerina.com has been online since 2005 and she has run The Thoughtful Travel Podcast since 2016, with episodes now being downloaded thousands of times each week. She's a member of the Australian Society of Travel Writers and is writing a book on thoughtful travel.
