Keeping safari updated, how to update safari in system preferences.

It's a good practice to keep your web browser constantly updated for security reasons , but Apple Safari on Mac doesn't have an update button. Here's how to keep Safari updated.

Every year, Apple releases new features for Safari, and you usually install them without realizing it because they're linked to macOS updates that you get in System Preferences.

But because Safari is a browser, Apple often lets you update to the latest version of Safari without installing the next big OS release. For example, while Safari 14.0 came bundled in macOS Big Sur , macOS Catalina users can still update to it. Apple also provides regular security updates to older versions of Safari, which is the main reason why  we recommend that you keep it updated .

To update Safari, you'll have to use the Software Update feature in System Preferences. To get there, click the Apple icon in the top-left corner of the screen.

In the menu that appears, choose the "System Preferences" option.

In System Preferences, click "Software Update."

The Software Update panel will show you whether there are any software updates available for your Mac. If there are, you have two choices.

If you want to install the latest operating system along with the latest version of Safari, just click the "Update Now" button and follow the process.

Related: Why You Should Update Your Web Browser

If you only want to install an update to Safari, click "More Info" under the list of available updates to see a detailed list of all updates.

After clicking "More info," a panel will appear listing the updates available for your Mac. Make sure that the "Safari" update is selected, and uncheck "macOS" if you don't want to install a system update along with it. When you're ready, click "Install Now."

After a while, the Safari update will be installed on your Mac.

Once the update process is finished, you can safely quit the System Preferences app using the red Close button in the corner of the window.

Since this process is somewhat confusing and non-obvious, we recommend enabling the auto-update feature to keep Safari and your Mac updated. Good luck!

How to Update Safari on a Mac

Find out how to update Safari on your Mac to keep the browser running as smoothly and securely as possible.

If privacy, performance, and power efficiency matter to you while browsing online, then you have no reason to use anything other than Safari on your Mac. To get the best possible experience, however, you should install Safari updates when available.

The latest Safari updates come with not only feature enhancements but also critical bug fixes and security patches. Below, we'll teach you how to update Safari on a Mac.

How Do Safari Updates Work?

New Safari updates come bundled with macOS updates. But rather than installing everything, you can choose to apply updates only related to Safari.

Still, it's a good idea to install any other system updates when you have the time to improve the stability of other native apps and the operating system in general. Bug fixes are also one of the important reasons to keep your Mac updated , and that extends to Safari as well.

Additionally, it's not possible to update Safari to the most recent version unless you use a relatively new version of macOS. For example, you can't experience the newest Safari features if you don't have the latest version of macOS installed on your Mac.

But you can still apply the latest minor updates for older Safari versions regardless. Since the way to update Safari varies slightly between macOS versions, be sure to check which macOS version is installed on your Mac before processing.

How to Update Safari in macOS Ventura and Later

The process of updating Safari on the Mac is straightforward. If you use Safari on a Mac running macOS Ventura or later, you can get the update by visiting the Software Update section in System Settings. Here's what you need to do:

  • Click the Apple menu in the menu bar and choose System Settings from the dropdown.
  • Select General from the left pane, and then click Software Update on the right.
  • Wait for a moment while your Mac scans for new software updates.
  • Select More Info .
  • Select Safari-specific updates (if available), then click Install Now.

On the same page, you can also enable automatic updates. That way, you won't have to install updates for your system manually.

How to Update Safari in macOS Monterey, Big Sur, Catalina, and Mojave

If your Mac is running macOS Monterey, Big Sur, Catalina, or Mojave, updating Safari is similar to how you would update it in macOS Ventura, except that you'll be using the System Preferences panel. So, follow these steps:

  • Click the Apple menu in the menu bar and choose System Preferences from the dropdown.
  • Select Software Update .
  • Now, click on More Info .
  • Select any Safari-specific updates if available, and then click Install Now.

How to Update Safari in macOS High Sierra and Earlier

In macOS 10.13 High Sierra and older versions of the Mac operating system, you need to use the Mac App Store to update Safari instead. Follow the instructions below:

  • Open the App Store app on your Mac.
  • Head to the Updates tab.
  • Wait until the Mac App Store scans for new software updates.
  • Click on More within the Software Update section.
  • Now, click on Update next to Safari.

Run the Latest Safari Version on Your Mac

Not all Safari updates end up making a big splash on the Mac. In fact, you may barely notice a difference with most of them. But the various under-the-hood improvements from each update do stack up over time.

Despite Apple products usually performing updates flawlessly, there may be times when your computer might get stuck during the update process. But don't worry; there are ways to overcome that obstacle.

Privacy is built in.

Online privacy isn’t just something you should hope for — it’s something you should expect. That’s why Safari comes with industry-leading privacy protection technology built in, including Intelligent Tracking Prevention that identifies trackers and helps prevent them from profiling or following you across the web. Upgrading to iCloud+ gives you even more privacy protections, including the ability to sign up for websites and services without having to share your personal email address.

What you browse is no one’s business but your own. Safari has built‑in protections to help stop websites and data-collection companies from watching and profiling you based on your browsing activity. Intelligent Tracking Prevention uses on‑device intelligence to help prevent cross‑site tracking and stops known trackers from using your IP address — making it incredibly difficult to learn who you are and what you’re interested in.

Safari makes it simple to see how your privacy is protected on all the websites you visit. Strong security protections in Safari help keep you safe. Passkeys introduce a safer way to sign in. iCloud Keychain securely stores and autofills passkeys and passwords across all your devices. Safari also notifies you when it encounters suspicious websites and prevents them from loading. Because it loads each web page in a separate process, any harmful code is always confined to a single browser tab so it won’t crash the entire application or access your data. And Safari automatically upgrades sites from HTTP to the more secure HTTPS when available.

Passkeys introduce a more secure and easier way to sign in. No passwords required.

Passkeys are end-to-end encrypted and safe from phishing and data leaks, and they are stronger than all common two-factor authentication types. Thanks to iCloud Keychain, they work across all your Apple devices, and they even work on non-Apple devices.

Safari works seamlessly and syncs your passwords, bookmarks, history, tabs, and more across Mac, iPad, iPhone, and Apple Watch. And when your Mac, iOS, or iPadOS devices are near each other, they can automatically pass what you’re doing in Safari from one device to another using Handoff. You can even copy images, video, or text from Safari on your iPhone or iPad, then paste into another app on your nearby Mac — or vice versa.

When you use Safari on multiple devices, your tabs carry over from one Apple device to another. So you can search, shop, work, or browse on your iPhone, then switch to your iPad or Mac and pick up right where you left off.

Save web pages you want to read later by adding them to your Reading List. Then view them on any of your iCloud-connected devices — even if you’re not connected to the internet.

iCloud Keychain securely stores your user names, passkeys, passwords, and credit card numbers and keeps them up to date on your trusted devices. So you can easily sign in to your favorite websites — as well as apps on iOS and iPadOS — and quickly make online purchases.

Safari 17.3 patches WebKit security issues on macOS Monterey and Ventura Macs

Apple says Safari iOS 17.3 patches four security and privacy vulnerabilities on older macOS editions, one of which may have been exploited.

Illustration showing an Apple Safari logo set against a blue gradient background

This Apple support document explains that Safari 17.3 contains patches for three vulnerabilities discovered in WebKit, the rendering engine powering Safari.

The same update also squishes a privacy bug, discovered by Mark Bowers, that Apple says could expose your private browsing activity in System Settings.

Safari 17.3 is available to download and install on Mac computers powered by Monterey (macOS 12) or Ventura (macOS 13) via System Settings > General > Software Update . For those wondering, macOS Sonoma 14.3 , iOS 17.3 and other updates released on January 23 fix those same WebKit issues as Safari 17.3.

Safari 17.3: WebKit security patches

One of the issues may let an attacker use malicious web content to run dangerous code on your device. “Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been exploited,” the document reads. This issue was addressed with improved checks.

A similar issue exists where an attacker might fingerprint you when you visit a maliciously crafted webpage, which was fixed with improved access restrictions.

The third WebKit issue deals with processing web content, which may result in arbitrary code execution. Apple addressed it with improved memory handling.

More bug-fix updates for older system

Apple provided additional bug-fix software updates for older macOS versions. While the company doesn’t actively develop new features for older OS versions, it continues supporting users with emergency fixes and security patches for years.

If you own an older Mac powered by macOS Monterey or Ventura, use Software Update in System Settings to ensure you have the latest security and bug fixes.

Here’s why I finally gave up on using Safari on my Mac

Alex Blake

I have a web browser confession to make: I’m an inveterate tab hoarder. I’ve tried to change. I’ve tried to cull open tabs and tried to resist opening new ones — but somehow the open tab counter just keeps on rising. At this point, I think I’m beyond saving.

The tab problem

Sharing is caring, playing catchup.

What I’ve learned is that I need a web browser that can accommodate me, that has learned to accept my tab-based failings without judgement or chastisement. And after many years of trying, it turns out that Safari is not that browser.

Safari treats tabs in the same way that Google Chrome does (and the same goes for all Chromium-based browsers like Edge, in fact). That is, the more tabs you open, the smaller each individual tab gets. If, like me, you have dozens or even hundreds of tabs open at a time, each one is shrunk down to the size of a pinhead in the tab bar.

  • Why I finally gave up and embraced Apple’s walled garden
  • I need to change how I use Apple tech in 2024. Here’s how I’m going to do it
  • This simple app changed how I use my Mac forever

Needless to say, this is pretty anxiety-inducing, as it’s a pain to find whichever tab it is that I’m looking for. Sure, I could always, you know, clear out my tabs, but who knows when I might need that article on the perfect way to iron my shirts? It could be right now. Bookmarking it and forgetting about it simply isn’t an option.

Instead of being more measured with my tab usage like a proper adult, I’ve taken the easy way out and switched to a better browser alternative: Firefox. Unlike Safari, when Firefox reaches a certain tab threshold, it lets you scroll the tab bar. Tabs stay a reasonable size and never shrink down to an unmanageable dimension. It’s enabling my bad habits, and I love it.

I’ve actually used Firefox for over 15 years now, and I’ve previously written about why I love it so much . But while it was always my go-to Windows browser, Safari still clung on while I was using my Mac. Recently, I finally pulled the plug and switched over to Firefox on my Mac, and I couldn’t be happier.

As I’m someone who regularly uses both Windows and macOS, I find myself frequently sending content from one device to another. Apple’s ecosystem is great for that (hello, AirDrop ), but going from Windows to macOS and back again isn’t so straightforward.

That is manifestly the case when it comes to sending myself web content. Apple pulled Safari from Windows years ago, so if I’m reading a webpage on Safari on my Mac, I have to email it to myself if I want to read it on my PC. It feels like it’s 2005 all over again.

If I use Firefox on my Mac, though, I can simply use its Send Tab to Device feature to ping the website across to Firefox running on my PC. It takes just a second and doesn’t clog up my email inbox. The irony is that Firefox is essentially setting up the kind of walled-garden ecosystem that Apple has long perfected.

Despite what I’ve said so far, it wasn’t just Safari’s tab management that forced my hand, although that played a big part in it. For one thing, both Safari and Firefox are some of the best browsers for privacy and have a plethora of privacy-protecting features built in. In that regard, switching to Firefox on my Mac didn’t feel like a step back at all.

But there’s something else, and it comes down to a more fundamental problem I have with Safari: it constantly feels like it’s playing catchup. We had to wait years before it got multiple browsing profiles , something rivals have long since baked in as standard in their own browsers.

Even worse, we had to wait until November 2023 to get favicons in the favorites bar. That’s right, websites saved to the toolbar have only just gained this key visual cue, literally years after every other browser implemented the feature.

In the end, it was a combination of all these factors that led me to give up Safari on my Mac. I used it for years because, as the default macOS web browser, it was easy. But sometimes you’ve got to go beyond the default to find something better.

A week ago, a shocking report emerged: Apple apparently had no plans for a larger iMac, potentially meaning the iMac Pro was dead and buried. However, opposition voices soon emerged, and the consensus now seems to be that Apple has only ruled out the 27-inch iMac, not the idea of a larger all-in-one entirely.

In fact, just yesterday, Bloomberg Mark Gurman reiterated his previous claims that a larger iMac is still in the works. That’s an exciting rumor because I’ve felt for years that the iMac isn’t quite living up to its potential. If a larger, more powerful version really is still in development, it could be a seriously impressive device. Here’s everything I want to see from it. More raw power

Thanks to the massive success of Apple Silicon, Macs have become increasingly tempting. Plenty of folks are heading back to the Mac for the first time in years, and in doing so, making the dramatic switch from Windows 11 to macOS.

When it comes to these operating systems, though, they're not equal across the board. And in the end, here are the five things that keep me coming back to Windows 11. Device support

Ever since they changed from Intel processors to Apple silicon chips, Apple’s MacBooks have boasted phenomenal battery life. Now, it looks like the new 16-inch and 14-inch MacBook Pro laptops due out this year could take their battery power even further.

That’s if a new report from DigiTimes (via MacRumors) is to be believed. The outlet has claimed that the new MacBooks -- which it says will launch later this year -- will feature improved displays that are even more power-efficient than the company’s existing ones.

The Vision Pro’s first killer app is the web, whether Apple likes it or not

Apple rules the app world with an iron fist. now, as developers reassert their control, apple needs safari to work for its headset to work..

A man controls Safari and other apps inside the Apple Vision Pro headset

In the days ahead of the Vision Pro’s launch, Apple has heavily promoted some of the apps destined for its spatial computing headset. Download Disney Plus and watch movies from Tatooine ! Slack and Fantastical and Microsoft Office on your face! FaceTime with your friends as a floating hologram! But it’s increasingly clear that the early success of the Vision Pro, and much of the answer to the question of what this headset is actually for, will come from a single app: Safari.

That’s right, friends. Web browsers are back. And Apple needs them more than ever if it wants this $3,500 face computer to be a hit. Embracing the web will mean threatening the very things that have made Apple so powerful and so rich in the mobile era, but at least at first, the open web is Apple’s best chance to make its headset a winner. Because at least so far, it seems developers are not exactly jumping to build new apps for Apple’s new platform.

Historically, Apple is unmatched in its ability to get app makers to keep up with its newest stuff. When it releases features for iPhones and iPads, a huge chunk of the App Store supports those features within a few weeks. But so far, developers appear to be taking their Vision Pro development slowly. Exactly why varies across the App Store, but there are a bunch of good reasons to choose from. One is just that it’s a new platform with new UI ideas and usability concerns on a really expensive device few people will have access to for a while. Sure, you can more or less tick a box and port your iPad app to the Vision Pro, but that may not be up to everyone’s standards.

The bigger-picture reason is that Apple and its developers are increasingly at odds. Some of the high-profile companies that have announced they’re not yet building apps for the Vision Pro and its visionOS platform — Netflix , Spotify, YouTube , and others — are the very same ones that have loudly taken issue with how Apple runs the App Store. Spotify has been railing against Apple’s 30 percent cut of in-app purchases for years. Netflix got a sweetheart deal from Apple years ago to share only 15 percent of revenue but has recently been refusing to participate in the Apple TV app’s discovery feature and has long since stopped allowing you to subscribe to Netflix from your iOS device. YouTube stopped allowing in-app purchases a few years ago and even canceled subscriptions people purchased in the App Store in order to get away from Apple’s commission.

You’d think the recent end to the Apple / Epic dispute would have made things better since Apple was required to allow developers to link out to other places users can pay for apps. But Apple changed its terms to say that, actually, even if someone clicks the link and subscribes through the web, developers still owe Apple a commission. Sure, it’s 27 percent instead of 30, but that’s not likely to change anyone’s mind. The message was clear: if you sell a product through the App Store, Apple will get its cut one way or another.

All this corporate infighting has the potential to completely change the way we use our devices

But what if you don’t need the App Store to reach Apple users anymore? All this corporate infighting has the potential to completely change the way we use our devices, starting with the Vision Pro. It’s not like you can’t use Spotify on the headset; it’s just that instead of tapping a Spotify app icon, you’ll have to go to Spotify.com. Same for YouTube, Netflix, and every other web app that opts not to build something native for the Vision Pro. And for gamers, whether you want to use Xbox Game Pass or just play Fortnite , you’ll also need a browser. Over the last decade or so, we’ve all stopped opening websites and started tapping app icons, but the age of the URL might be coming back.

If you believe the open web is a good thing, and that developers should spend more time on their web apps and less on their native ones, this is a big win for the future of the internet. (Disclosure: I believe all these things.) The problem is, it’s happening after nearly two decades of mobile platforms systematically downgrading and ignoring their browsing experience. You can create homescreen bookmarks, which are just shortcuts to web apps, but those web apps don’t have the same access to offline modes, cross-app collaboration, or some of your phone’s other built-in features. After all this time, you still can’t easily run browser extensions on mobile Safari or mobile Chrome. Apple also makes it maddeningly complicated just to stay logged in to the services you use on the web across different apps. Mobile platforms treat browsers like webpage viewers, not app platforms, and it shows.

There are some reasons for hope, though: Apple recently added multiple profiles, external webcam support on the iPad, and a few other features to Safari, which at least shows Apple is aware Safari exists and is willing to give it access to some native features. It felt for years like Apple would happily ditch Safari altogether if given the choice; after all, it tightly controls everything about its platforms, and the web is an utterly uncontrollable place. But the company appears to be still invested in making Safari work. (All the Safari-focused antitrust pressure is probably helping move things along, too.)

Safari for visionOS will also come with some platform-specific features: you’ll be able to open multiple windows at the same time and move them all around in virtual space. A leaked video recently showed a user manipulating a 3D object inside of a webpage. Apple engineers said at WWDC last year that they’ve completely redesigned the tab overview for visionOS, and they’ve also made some changes so the browser works both with touch and the eye-tracking and double-pinching mechanics that are core to visionOS. Apple has been warning developers to prepare their apps for all kinds of new screen sizes and layouts, as users do wacky stuff with their headsets. The company also confirmed that it will support WebXR , a protocol for browser-based VR that can be used for some impressively immersive stuff.

Many users might mostly not notice the difference between opening the Spotify app and going to Spotify.com

Rumors have also been flying for a couple of years that Apple is going to drop its WebKit requirement for developers, which would mean other browsers could be built on other rendering engines. If and when that happens, you might be able to run full-fledged Chrome or Firefox on your Apple devices, potentially including the Vision Pro. That change, along with the increased attention on progressive web apps (PWAs) — the cross-platform, web-based apps that Android, Windows, and even Apple are starting to support more aggressively — could make your headset’s browser wildly more powerful practically overnight. With a good browser and powerful PWAs, many users might mostly not notice the difference between opening the Spotify app and going to Spotify.com. That’s a win for the whole web.

A powerful, deeply integrated desktop-class browser will make the Vision Pro useful and powerful from day one. Apple should embrace Safari, allow other desktop-class browsers, and treat the Vision Pro like the power user platform it is. No one has yet seen enough of Safari for visionOS to know if it is all of those things, though — and I’m not sure whether Apple wants it to be. Because here’s the real question for Apple: which is more important, getting the Vision Pro off to a good start or protecting the sanctity of its App Store control at all costs? As Apple tries to create a platform shift to face computers, I’m not sure it can have it both ways.

How to delete your Safari history on Mac, iPhone, or iPad

Posted: January 14, 2024 | Last updated: January 15, 2024

  • Clearing your Safari history removes cookies and reduces online tracking.
  • The process for deleting web history is different for Mac, iPhone, and iPad.
  • You can use Private Browsing Mode to prevent web history from being saved.

From accessing your bank account on a shared computer to Googling embarrassing queries, there are a number of reasons to want to clear out your search history. Deleting your history on Safari removes your trail of web browsing, but the process also does more than clear out potentially embarrassing websites.

Clearing your history will also remove associated cookies from the web browser, reducing the number of ways you are being tracked online. While clearing your web history only removes cookies from Safari and not third-party websites that already have your data, it can still be helpful to reduce online tracking. Clearing the related cache can also sometimes fix bugs.

Deleting a web history from Safari isn't a terribly complicated process, but the steps are a bit different if you are using a MacBook , iPad , or iPhone . The steps for clearing several web pages and a single website are also different. Some privacy settings can also prevent you from deleting any web history, leaving the buttons you need grayed out.

How to close all Safari tabs on iPhone at the same time

There are also a few tricks that can make the process simpler. For example, if you turn on iCloud for Safari, when you delete the history from your Mac, it will automatically be deleted from your phone and tablet too. If you know you want to delete your web history before you make a single click, you can use Private Browsing Mode instead.

Whether you are a murder mystery writer looking to eliminate search queries that would raise the eyebrows of any detective, or you want to reduce the number of cookies tracking you, this guide will tell you how to delete Safari history in a few simple steps.

How to delete Safari history on a Mac

Safari allows you to delete a lot of web history from a Mac or MacBook at once by allowing you to choose the dates for which you would like to erase. If you want to clear websites from the last hour, last day, last two days or all of your web history, this is the process to use.

  • Open Safari
  • From the top toolbar, click on History , then click Clear History.
  • In the pop-up window, use the drop-down menu to select the time period you want to clear from your history.
  • Click Clear History .

How to delete Safari history on an iPhone or iPad

The steps for clearing out your Safari history on an iPhone is quite different from using a Safari browser on a Mac. But, the process is the same across both iPhones and iPads, so these steps below work for both your phone and tablet.

  • Open the Settings app.
  • Select Safari.
  • Scroll down to the Privacy & Security section and select Clear History and Website Data.
  • On the next page, tap the time frame that you would like to delete the history for.
  • Optional: If you also want to close out of all open websites, tap the toggle for Close All Tabs.
  • Tap Clear History.

How to delete a single website from Safari history

Safari allows you to easily delete websites from the last hour, day, two days, or your entire web history easily. But, if you only want to remove a single website, you'll instead have to access your history, and then select the individual page to remove.

  • Open a Safari browser.
  • From the top toolbar, select History > Show All History. Or, you can use the keyboard shortcut Command + Y.
  • Select the website entry that you wish to delete. If that site was not visited today, you will need to tap on the date that you visited the website to find it or use the search bar at the top.
  • Right-click on the website entry and select delete.

On an iPhone or iPad:

  • Tap the Bookmark icon on the bottom (it looks like an open book).
  • Tap the Clock or History icon at the top of the page.
  • Locate the website that you wish to delete from your history -- your history is organized by the date you visited.
  • On the website you wish to delete, swipe left, then tap on the red trash icon.

How to use Bing Chat on Safari

How to use private mode in safari.

If you know that you'll want to delete the website that you are about to visit from your history, try using Private Browsing Mode instead. This mode does not save any website history, including search history and autofill information. That means you can do your online banking without going back and deleting your web history when you are done.

To use Private Browsing Mode on a Mac:

  • Open Safari.
  • On the top toolbar, go to File > New Private Window.
  • Use this new private window for browsing. You can quickly see if a Safari browser is Private because the field to type in the URL is dark gray instead of white.

To use Private Browsing Mode on iOS:

  • Tap the tab icon in the bottom left corner.
  • At the bottom of the screen, tap Private (swipe to see all the toppings in this toolbar if you do not see the Private option.)
  • Private browsing will have a dark gray URL field instead of white. To return to regular browsing, repeat the steps but this time swipe back to your open tabs.

How to use picture-in-picture mode in Safari on Mac

How to instantly clear your web history from multiple devices.

With iCloud , Safari can save your web browsing across all the devices that you use with your Apple ID. While that's helpful for quickly recalling a website no matter what device you first opened it with, it also syncs any deletions to the web history across your devices . That means if you delete a web page from your history on a Mac, it will automatically be deleted from your iPhone too -- as long as both devices are logged into the same Apple ID and iCloud for Safari is enabled.

iCloud for Safari can be enabled during the setup process for a new device, but it can also be turned on and off from the Settings app:

  • Tap on your Apple ID or name at the top.
  • Tap on iCloud.
  • Under Apps Using iCloud, select Show All . (If you are running iOS 15 or earlier, you may not see the full list already instead of the Show All option, in which case you can jump to the next step.)
  • Toggle on Safari from the list.

Why can't I clear my Safari history?

In some cases, the buttons that you need to tap to clear your Safari history are gray. But why can't you delete your Safari history, and how do you fix it? Here are a few common reasons why the Safari history options are grayed out:

  • You've already deleted your history and there are no more websites to clear out.
  • Web content restrictions are turned on. Some parental control settings prevent kids and teens from deleting their web history, while other content restrictions can also prevent you from deleting. To access the content restriction options, open the Settings app and go to Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions.
  • You are using Private Browsing Mode. This mode does not save your web history, so you have nothing to delete.

14 Safari tips and tricks you absolutely need to know

Can you permanently delete safari history.

Deleting your Safari history makes it difficult for the average person to recover the past websites that you have visited. However, if you are connected to your work or school network, in some cases the network administrator can still see your website access. Deleting your website history also may not fool a trained digital forensics expert during an investigation.

Chrome's new AI update brings a smart twist to browsing & text composition

Google Chrome's recent update introduces generative AI

uppdatera safari macbook

The recent update to Google Chrome introduces generative AI features that enhance the browser's functionality. These include assistance in text composition, improved organization of tabs, and the creation of customizable themes, contributing to a more user-friendly experience and demonstrating the evolving role of AI technology in Google Chrome.

Navigating the web with AI

At the heart of the update is the 'Tab Organizer,' a tool designed to manage multiple browser tabs. It's similar to the Tab Groups that Apple introduced in iOS 17 , but with an AI twist.

By automatically grouping open tabs into coherent categories based on content similarity, the Tab Organizer turns a jumbled collection of pages into neatly arranged sets, such as 'Summer Clothes Search' or 'Road Trip Itinerary Ideas.'

To activate the function, right-click on a tab and choose "Organize Similar Tabs," or use the drop-down arrow on the left side of your tabs. Chrome will also recommend names and emojis for these newly formed groups, making it more straightforward to locate them for future use.

Personalized browser themes with AI

Introducing an AI-driven theme creator allows users to generate unique browser themes based on specific prompts. Whether it's a mood, a color palette, or a particular style, Chrome's text-to-image diffusion model can create a bespoke theme that reflects the user's taste.

From serene landscapes to vibrant abstract patterns, the possibilities for personalization are virtually limitless. For additional ideas, take a look at an assortment of the Chrome team's preferred theme designs.

AI-assisted writing

Chrome's new 'Help Me Write' feature can help users who often find themselves at a loss for words. The AI-based tool offers real-time assistance in drafting text directly within the browser.

It's ideal for various purposes, whether composing a thoughtful restaurant review, creating a polite party RSVP, or drafting a formal apartment rental inquiry. Right-click on any text box or field in Chrome and choose "Help me write."

Use macos recovery, use the app store, use a web browser, use a bootable installer, if you need help.

Software Update is the fastest and easiest way to get macOS updates and upgrades, and it can use less storage space to download and install them. Software Update shows only software that is compatible with your Mac. If Software Update says that your Mac is up to date, then no new software is currently available for your Mac model.

How to update macOS using Software Update

If you need to reinstall macOS on your Mac, you can use its built-in Recovery system to do it.

How to reinstall macOS

To download macOS from the App Store, use a Mac that is compatible with that macOS. If your Mac isn't compatible, the App Store dims the Get button, says that the macOS is not compatible with this device, or says that the requested version of macOS is not available.

If these links don't work as expected, try again using Safari, which is in your Applications folder.

Monterey 12

Catalina 10.15

Mojave 10.14

High Sierra 10.13

Use these links to find macOS in the App Store.

Cick the Get button in the App Store to begin downloading. Software Update might open and ask you to download from there.

After downloading to your Applications folder, the installer opens automatically. Follow the onscreen installation instructions. Or quit without installing to leave the installer in your Applications folder for later use.

These older macOS versions are available as disk images that you can download using your web browser. To get the installer from the disk image, use a Mac that is compatible with that macOS.

Sierra 10.12

El Capitan 10.11

Yosemite 10.10

Mountain Lion 10.8

Use these links to download a macOS disk image (.dmg) file.

Double-click the .dmg file to open it and see the package (.pkg) file within.

Double-click the .pkg file, then follow the onscreen instructions to install the macOS installer into your Applications folder.

Open your Applications folder and double-click the macOS installer, named Install [ Version Name ]. Follow the onscreen installation instructions.

A bootable installer can be useful if you want to install macOS on multiple computers without downloading the installer each time, or when you can't install using the other methods. To download an installer suitable for creating a bootable installer, use the App Store or use a web browser to download from a compatible Mac. The Mac must also be using macOS High Sierra or later, the latest version of macOS Sierra, or the latest version of OS X El Capitan.
