What is the food like on board a Viking River Cruise ? It’s a valid concern, but after several sailings, I can say that the food is great! See for yourself, though, in the menus and food photos and videos below as enjoyed on the Viking Heimdal and the Viking Forseti in March 2014.

First, an overview of what to expect. There is only one restaurant on board the Viking River Ships, and only one seating for each meal in the dining room. There is also a more casual buffet on the Aquavit Terrace. The dining room is casual, with large tables seating 6-8 guests. The casual chic color palette is calming with muted tones and pops of color with the bright turquoise blue glassware. There is no assigned seating.

Breakfast is a large buffet served every morning in the main dining room. As you can see in the video, the choices are amazing!

If you don’t see something you’d like on the buffet, order off of the limited breakfast menu in the main dining room.

Alternatively, you can also eat breakfast on the Aquavit Terrace. The small amount of breakfast selections are ideal for a quick, light bite to enjoy in the enclosed glass seating area, or al fresco on the open air patio.

Coffee, cappuccino, tea and hot chocolate are also available in two snack stations outside of the lounge on the Viking Longships. A small assortment of bakery items are available in the morning, with sweets in the afternoon. Many are specialties of the area in which you are sailing that day.

For lunch, a large buffet with a pasta station and salads can be found in the main dining room, as seen in the video below. A menu offers appetizers and main meals, along with desserts. A lighter lunch is served in the lounge.

Dinner brings with it a bit more flair, without all of the formality. Meal service presents more imaginative dinner options, but it is never too formal or too over the top with pomp and circumstance. There are no formal nights.

Along with the rotating choice of main meals, there are always classics such as Caesar salad, salmon, chicken breast, and steak that are consistently on the menu.

Appetizers, main meal and desserts are offered, along with a cheese course. Wine pairings are included, and plentiful, throughout meal service.

Wine, beer and soft drinks are included with lunch and dinner – so no nickel and dining there!!

The food is fresh, and locally sourced whenever possible. We watched from our verandah balcony as the Viking Cruises staff members walked off the ship and picked up a local delivery of breads and wines. Their arms were laden with boxes that had bread loaves peaking out or were clinking as the glass wine bottles moved within.

Some optional excursions include accompanying the chef to the local farmer’s market to pick out foods, and the chefs utilize fresh herbs from the sunroof gardens on the Viking Longships.

One night, we especially enjoyed the bread basket at the table. We asked for another basket, but what was brought was not the same thing. They had run out of the original bread selection. There was nothing frozen in the back, no more on hand than they needed.

What if you are celebrating a special occasion? We celebrated a birthday while sailing, and with some advance notice, the chefs were kind enough to create a birthday cheesecake made with mango and tropical fruits. The cake was large enough to serve our entire table of six.

Torstein Hagen, the owner of Viking Cruises, states that the food will never be considered gourmet, but will always be great, fresh food. I agree!

My wife requires a gluten-free meal. What options does Viking River Cruises offer to accommodate her?

Friday 21st of April 2023

Viking actually works really well with allergies or special diets. When we were onboard several menu items were designated as allergy friendly on the standard menu. However, I had some things that I needed to avoid and they were really great at working with me. I would definitely try to contact Viking beforehand saying that you will need a gluten-free menu, and then be sure to talk to someone onboard once you get there so that there are no surprises.

We are booked for a Mississippi River cruise December 30, 2023, New Orleans to New Orleans. Will the menus reflect the Cajun food of the area. Thanks Diane Fournier

Saturday 19th of November 2022

Hi Diane, We haven't sailed the Mississippi River cruise, but do believe that there will be some Cajun food options. Viking is always good at representing the tastes of the region, so we'd expect there to be some local foods on the menus.

I am planning on taking the river cruise Frances Finest. At times I am not a early person. 6-8 Morning for breakfast too early...Is there anything for a lighter fare, continental breakfast if breakfast is missed. And...if I decide to be out for lunch at the designated time is there a lighter fare if that would occur.

Basically, is there food available if you do not make the designated time frame for Breakfast, Lunch and possibly dinner?

Thank You... C. Pacchioli

Tuesday 30th of November 2021

Yes, Claudia! There is food available outside of the designated sit down meals. We always found something to eat when we wanted it!

Monday 21st of October 2019

Is the Aquavit Terrace open for an early dinner? We prefer to eat early around 4:30 - 5:00. Can you get a full light dinner at that time? Thanks

Wednesday 30th of October 2019

When we went it was. I can't guarantee on your sailing, though.

Food On Board a Viking River Cruise

Food is the number one thing for Mr B and I when we go on holiday and when we cruise it is no different.

From Viking we were expecting quality, variety and a focus on local dishes. We got this and we both agree the food even exceeded our expectations.

When I am on holiday I always look forward to a leisurely breakfast.

A buffet is available with a very generous selection which included freshly carved smoked salmon, a selection of cheeses and cold meats, yoghurts, fresh pastries, a selection or breads, oatmeal, a range of cereals, fresh fruits and hot options with eggs cooked to order any way you would like, bacon (English and American) and sausages.

Whilst the food on the buffet looked lovely and I was impressed with the variety, I am personally not a fan of buffets so each morning I ordered my breakfast from the menu. I really liked that you had the choice of buffet or ordering from the menu, or you could do both if there were a few things you fancied.

There were nine juices on the menu. My regular choice, cranberry, was not on there, but from the first morning I ordered it there wasn’t so much the blink of an eye and it was brought to me in a matter of just a few minutes. That was how we found all the service with Viking, no matter what request we had nothing was ever an issue or too much trouble.

One morning I ordered an omelette with mushrooms, ham and cheese – the filling was generous and it was really tasty. Fancying something sweet, another morning I opted for the French toast with maple syrup – the sweet soft fluffy toast was very yummy!

There were two breakfast options in particular which I absolutely loved, so much so I ordered them both four times over the course of the holiday! Eggs Benedict with smoked salmon is my favourite breakfast of all time but, sadly, it can be done wrong – overcooked eggs or a poor hollandaise can ruin the dish so easily. Well Viking did my favourite breakfast proud. Every poached egg I had had a silky, glossy running yolk whilst the generous amount of hollandaise was rich with a gentle hint of lemon. Combined with the smoked salmon it was utterly delicious!

There was a reason when I ordered the Eggs Benedict I restrained myself and only ordered one egg rather than two. It was so I still had room for what I liked to call my ‘breakfast dessert’ which for me was the cooked-to-order buttermilk pancakes. You could order plain, blueberry, banana or chocolate. For me the plain with a side of maple syrup was all I needed – they were so unbelievably soft and fluffy, the perfect pancakes!

A continental breakfast was also available every day on the Aquavit terrace, but we chose to enjoy a full breakfast every morning in the restaurant.

Lunch is served in the main restaurant and also on the Aquavit terrace. Whilst we enjoyed a few lunches in the restaurant the weather was very good to us on our sailing so we got to enjoy quite a few alfresco lunches on the Aquavit terrace. Whilst many of our fellow passengers chose to dine on tables in the shade we always opted for a table for two at the front, sitting in the sunshine. We are from the UK after all – we don’t get much nice weather so we have to make the most of it whilst we could!

The lunch menu has ‘always available’ options which as the name suggests are options which you see on the menu every day. These don’t change and were good lunch choices which we thought were great crowd pleasers, such as Nicoise salad, Cheeseburger, Vegetarian burger, Hot dog and for dessert, Chocolate mouse or fresh fruit.

The other side of the lunch menu changed daily. There was usually a soup for starter followed by approximately four choices for main and a choice of two desserts.

As we always enjoyed a generous breakfast and dinner, Mr B and I tried to restrain ourselves at lunch and just ordered one course. One afternoon, Dani, who was part of the wonderful lunch service team, did persuade us to try the curried cauliflower soup as he said it was too good to miss out on. We both had a small bowl and Dani was correct! It was silky smooth, sweet with cauliflower and had a lovely hint of spice – not hot, but well balanced which added a lovely flavour.

There was a different pasta dish on the lunch menu every day and this was usually my go-to choice. I love pasta and all the ones I had were superb, fresh pasta with a well-made sauce. Some of my favourites were the pappardelle al ragu, spaghetti carbonara and the penne all’ arrabbiata. Some of the lunch choices Mr B particularly enjoyed were the chicken tikka masala and baby back ribs with sweet potato fries.

Whilst we always passed on dessert, it was difficult as there were some wonderful sounding and looking desserts such as chocolate chip sundae, floating island, flan Parisien, peach melba and banana split.

Evenings where always the highlight of the day for Mr B and I. A fantastic dinner followed by cocktails at the bar always completed the perfect days we had on our Viking holiday.

We varied our nights between eating in the restaurant and at Aquavit. The same menu was served at both – we just enjoyed the two different locations. What we did really like about the restaurant was sharing tables with other passengers, sharing stories of what we had all been up to and everyone’s highlights of the holiday.

Like the lunch menu there was an ‘always available’ section on the menu which had the option of a Caesar salad to start and main options such as Angus rib eye steak, Poached Norwegian salmon and Roast chicken supreme with Crème brulee, fresh fruit and a cheese plate as the dessert choices.

The daily menu which had different options every dinner time was split into two sections. At the top there was always one starter, main and dessert which was regional to the port you were in.

Below this there were then two additional starters, three mains and two desserts. You didn’t have to have all three courses from one section of the menu – you could mix and match between all the options which Mr B and I did most days.

Every night at dinner there was always a basket of freshly baked bread on the table and there was a different one each night. From cheese-topped bread to olive bread to rye bread, there wasn’t one bread I didn’t like. In fact most nights I had more than one piece – I’m a sucker for freshly baked bread!

We enjoyed many, many mouth-watering dishes. Some of my favourite starters were the Halaszle fisherman’s soup, which was on the regional menu whilst we were in Budapest as it is a traditional Hungarian dish. Another soup I very much enjoyed was the Tom Kha Gai which is a Thai chicken soup made with coconut milk. It was lovely and fragrant with lemongrass.

Mr B and I both really enjoyed the crab cake and one night I also enjoyed the buffalo mozzarella in baked eggplant rolls with tomato sauce. This was actually on the menu as a main course, but I asked if I could have a smaller portion of this as a starter and of course this wasn’t a problem.

Our favourite starter of the holiday, for both of us, was the Goats cheese soufflé. It was so light but packed full the lovely goats cheese flavour. It was served with a tomato sauce with the sweetness of tomatoes balancing well with the sharpness of the goats cheese.

I was really pleased with the variety which was on offer when selecting a main course. I had many lovely seafood dishes, including a delicious seared seabass fillet with a lemon, caper and parsley sauce.

And a perfectly cooked pieced of herb-crusted Ahi tuna cooked medium rare which was served with wilted spinach, potatoes and a sherry shallot vinaigrette.

I’m a big lover of mushrooms and there were two vegetarian main courses I enjoyed which I couldn’t resist ordering – the mushroom and potato strudel served with a cream mushroom sauce. The pastry was lovely and crispy and packed with filling.

On our last night whilst we were eating dinner on the Aquavit terrace I enjoyed the portobello mushroom risotto with parmesan crisp.

Whilst we were in Vienna one of the regional specialities was the Wiener Schnitzel, breaded Viennese veal with warm potato salad. This was very popular – a lot of our fellow passengers were ordering it too. It was wonderfully thin with a light coating of breadcrumbs. I was worried it would be dry but was pleasantly surprised that it wasn’t.

Two excellent beef dishes I enjoyed were the beef short rib (which fell apart just using my fork as it was so well cooked) and the outstanding chateaubriand which was accompanied with a bearnaise sauce, gratin potato and glazed vegetables. The chateaubriand was utter perfection, perfectly cooked and oh so tender. It was obviously quite clear how much we enjoyed it as our lovely waiter that night offered Mr B and I another piece and a few moments later reappeared from the kitchen with another portion for us both!

I am one of those people that looks at the dessert menu first before I have even looked at the savoury dishes – it’s safe to say I have a sweet tooth! Viking didn’t let me down with the dessert offerings. Some of the standout desserts for me were the Key lime pie with meringue and caramel sauce, New York cheesecake with berry coulis and the lime cake with white chocolate and raspberry sauce. All were very yummy.

One night I could not decide between two desserts so I asked our lovely server which one he recommended, and he said he would get me both! Of course I did not argue and here is the face of a very happy person who loves desserts and is very happy she was given two . . .

In case you were wondering, the two desserts I couldn’t decide between were carrot cake with cream cheese frosting (a classic and one of my favourite cakes) and Somloi Galuska, a traditional Hungarian trifle (which was also delicious!).

It’s a hard choice, but probably my favourite dessert of the cruise was the ‘Moelleux au chocolat’, aka chocolate fondant. The middle was full of rich molten chocolate which oozed out once I cut into it. Served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream it tasted absolutely divine.

A few nights, when I somehow had room left in my stomach, I also ordered the cheese plate. It does come with accompaniments, such as dried fruit, grapes, nuts etc., but when I ordered mine I asked for it plain – just cheese and some fresh French bread is good enough for me!

As lovers of food Mr B and I were very happy with the food on Viking, especially the focus on local, regional dishes which meant we got to try some dishes we had not heard of before.

Thank you Viking for keeping these two food lovers very happy and full during our wonderful holiday!

Ooo this I think is so important in a cruise. Having a variety and changing menus is a fantastic thing and it all looks so good

' src=

Wonderful post! Has me getting hungry and very excited about my cruise in April!

' src=

This looks amazing!!

' src=

Thank you so much for this post–it all looks delicious! My husband and I are going on the same cruise next week (July 29th) and we are pleased to see some of what we have to look forward to!

' src=

Thank you for sharing! Getting so excited for our Viking cruise after seeing all these pictures.

' src=

Given fears of Covid, I am relieved to learn the same dinner menu is available on the terrace so we can eat outside. Thank you for mentioning that! We will do the Cities of Light in September. Did you have trouble claiming a table outside for breakfast, lunch or dinner?

' src=

My husband and I went on the Viking Lyon & Provence cruise in April, and ate outside as much as possible. We found that it helped to arrive on the terrace as soon as tables opened for meals, so we could claim a spot. Wonderful weather and a great itinerary in France!

' src=

What a great review this was. My husband and I leave on our Viking Cruise in 4 days and you really made our mouths water. Thank you so much

' src=

Brilliant post! We can’t wait for our Danube cruise in September! Thank you. Did you ever try the buffet?

' src=

Thank you for your comment Nancy. I didn’t try the buffet but my husband did a few times and everything was prepared fresh and he enjoyed it.

' src=

Loved your descriptions. Made my mouth water. Love deserts and beef. Will be on the Christmas cruise 2023 with my daughter. Guessing it will be too cold to eat outside. Used to Arizona weather so 70’s is winter weather

' src=

It was very nice reviewing the menus. My husband and I will be on our 1st time viking cruise this month and we are Asians I wonder if there’s some Asian rice included in the menus. It is always a part of our meal to have it at least once a day. We are very excited and in a couple of weeks we’ll be there and my bags are packed and were ready to go. Kindly have that in the cruise. Thank you very much….

I’m afraid I cant recall if there was rice however the best thing to do would be to speak to the Maitre de when you board as if they don’t it may still be something they can do for you. they were very accommodating. Happy sailing!

' src=

We just returned from our first Viking Cruise aboard the Viking Star. The food selections were very good and they had white rice on the buffet very often if not every day. Therefore, I’m sure you can order it in any of the dining venues. They also had congee which I had never eaten before. It became one of my favorite breakfast items since I enjoy savory flavors for breakfast.

' src=

I read (& drooled) over your comments and photos of the delicious fare that Viking serves. Our first time with Viking I thought I had died and gone to heaven. We leave for our Christmas Market cruise with Viking in FIVE DAYS and I can’t wait!!!

Thank you for your lovely comment! I would love to do a Christmas market cruise with Viking. It will be magical, have the best time!

Viking Rhine River Cruise | Amsterdam To Basel

By Author Daryl and Mindi Hirsch

Pinterest image: photo of cruise scenes with caption reading

Cruising the Rhine River with Viking River Cruises is a popular option for exploring Europe in style. See what we thought about our scenic 12-day Viking Rhine River Cruise from Amsterdam to Basel.

Rhine Cruise with Viking River Cruises

In the grand scheme of things, people can be separated into two categories – cruise people and everyone else. We always placed ourselves in the latter category.

We eschewed cruises as being nice for people who prefer more structure on their vacations and prefer the safety of guided trips with strict itineraries. We prefer immersive experiences that bring us into the heart of a country’s culture.

That being said, we were thrilled when we received an unexpected offer from Viking River Cruise. Needless to say, it was an offer that we couldn’t refuse. This was our chance to try a certain ease of travel and to see what it’s like to experience a trip with guides and planned meals.

Pro Tip Don’t cruise without travel insurance !

Viking Eir - Rhine Cruise with Viking River Cruises

As part of Viking’s generous offer, we were able to select a European riverboat cruise that appealed to us. After pouring over the many options for cruises in Europe outlined on the Viking website and studying the photos and videos, we ended up selecting the Rhineland Discovery cruise.

This 12-day Amsterdam to Basel river cruise starts with two city destinations (Bruges and Amsterdam ) before cruising up the Rhine with stops in Rhine River cities like Kinderdijk, Cologne, Koblenz, Rüdesheim, Heidelberg, Strasbourg , Breisach and finally Basel .

Sure, Viking is reputed to have some of the world’s best river cruises and the Viking Rhine river cruise sounds wonderful. But what did we really think? We share our thoughts in the following Viking River Cruise review.

What We Loved About Our Viking Rhine River Cruise

Let’s be real. It’s hard to not enjoy a luxury cruise on the Viking Eir, a longboat with 95 staterooms and four decks. Food is plentiful and cooked to order, and the German beer onboard is some of the best in the world. Coffee flows all day long on a Viking river cruise ship, and the crew’s main mission is to make everybody happy.

Visiting Five Countries Without Lugging Our Bags

Rhineland Discovery - Rhine Cruise with Viking River Cruises

As independent travelers, we lug around our bags – a lot. As a result, we sometimes suffer from tired backs and sore feet.

What a treat it was to not have to worry about luggage for twelve straight days! This may not seem like a big deal, but it was a game-changer for us.

As an extra bonus, we loved unpacking our bags and feeling ‘at home’ during the length of the Viking Rhine River cruise. Since we use packing cubes when we travel, it only took us a few minutes to settle into the room and start enjoying the cruise.

Room With A View And Amenities

Comfortable Room - Rhine Cruise with Viking River Cruises

We weren’t sure what to expect from the room even though we had looked at various YouTube videos for a sneak preview. Our room turned out to be downright spacious with a comfortable bed, a full range of movies available on-demand and wonderful bathroom products that got replenished on a daily basis. We were pleasantly surprised by the room’s private balcony with a table and chairs for two, which made it feel even more spacious.

True confession – we didn’t use the balcony much once we discovered that the best view in our room was from the bed. It turns out that there’s not much better in life than lying in bed and watching the Rhine current stream gently next to the trees and hills of Western Europe.

Awesome Crew

Awesome Crew with Beer - Rhine Cruise with Viking River Cruises

We consider ourselves to be low maintenance travelers who don’t need a lot of assistance, but that doesn’t mean that we don’t appreciate excellent service. And that’s exactly what we got from the international crew while cruising the Rhine with Viking.

Empty beer stein? Not for long. Fresh fruit in our cabin? You betcha.

This crew was highly attentive without being intrusive, and it was our pleasure to tip them at the end of the cruise.

Food on a Rhine Cruise with Viking River Cruises

Food on our Viking Rhine River Cruise was varied and plentiful.

We appreciated the fancy, multi-course dinners and the big, hearty lunches served in the dining room, though we mostly opted for the simpler, more casual meals available on the Aquavit Terrace. However, we liked breakfast best of all.

The range of breakfast foods ran the gamut from healthy fruit and yogurt to more decadent options. Passing on the menu items, we stuck to the breakfast buffet where we enjoyed cheeses, meats and other regional delicacies.

The one and only thing missing was Nutella, but not for long. The attentive staff was kind enough to share their private Nutella stash with us once they realized we were true fans of the chocolate hazelnut spread.

Fun Excursions

Viking offers many excursions on its Rhineland Discovery cruise, many of which are at no additional cost for participants. The free Viking tours are good – mostly slow-paced walking/bus tours with lots of information and minimal pressure.

However, the optional excursions are the ones that truly wowed us with their passionate guides and small group format. These tours really offer travelers an intimate chance to experience many of the cultural delights that Europe has to offer.

It may seem like a hardship to spend the extra cash after already plunking down a bunch of dough for the cruise itself, but these are sincere, honest excursions that will detour you from the more touristic itineraries. These were our three favorite excursions:

Cologne’s Beer Culture Dinner Tour

Cologne Beer Crawl Excursion - Rhine Cruise with Viking River Cruises

As we learned over dinner at a brauhaus that dates back to 1858, Cologne locals never eat while drinking. They only drink while eating.

Living like locals was not a problem for us during this excursion where we drank an endless number of small glasses of chilled Kölsch beer at no less than four different family-owned pubs each oozing with Köln culture. We even learned how to toast like a local during this fun pub crawl.

We now like to clink the bottom of our glasses and say ‘Prost!’ even though we’re no longer in Cologne. In addition to drinking beer, we also enjoyed soaking up Cologne’s history through this walking tour of the town’s narrow, lively, rebuilt North German streets.

Taste Of The Best Of Alsace

Strasbourg Food Tour Excursion - Rhine Cruise with Viking River Cruises

We were pleased to get our first taste of Strasbourg during this full-day excursion which served as an introduction for our future stay in the fairytale Alsatian city in France.

The informative tour guide from Food and City Tours Strasbourg introduced us to a variety of local fare starting with kugelhopf and continuing with chocolate, cheese, baguettes, wine, flamenkuche and finally pain d’epices , a local pastry similar to what Americans call gingerbread.

Highlight of this excursion? For us, it was the picnic-style lunch at Oenosphère where we sampled excellent local wines from nearby vineyards along with an assortment of amazing French cheeses and charcuterie.

Black Forest Hike & Farm Visit

Black Forest Excursion - Rhine Cruise with Viking River Cruises

We pinched ourselves as we ate tasty German food and drank local beer with a view of the Black Forest. Was this real life or a dream?

Viking’s local tour guide took us on a winding journey where we visited old and new farms, hiked up forest trails and drank schnapps in addition to enjoying lunch with a view at a local eating hall. We saw so much that we felt like we were on a Black Forest road trip , if only for the day.

This excursion took us away from the standard cuckoo clock shops and allowed us to see the magnificent, lush, green Schwarzwald hills along with a glimpse into the day-to-day struggles of old German culture. We also enjoyed visiting a modern German farm complete with its on-site schnapps distillery not to mention adorable goats and cows.

The Rhine Itself

Castle View - Rhine Cruise with Viking River Cruises

We mainly chose the Rhineland Discovery cruise for the opportunity to cruise the Rhine and see Rhine River castles sprinkled along its verdant shore. Despite some cloudy and rainy weather, the view did not disappoint.

Seriously, the castles just kept coming as we lounged on the wide-open sundeck of our longship.

We toasted and drank hearty, dark Kostrizer beers as we sailed along the Middle Rhine River streaming by the famous Lorelei rock and oh-so-many castles. We were so inspired by the fabulous views and tasty beers that we plan to return and spend one week in the Rhine Valley so that we can explore the area more fully.

What We Didn’t Love So Much

Feeling rushed.

As full-time travelers and influencers, we usually travel slowly with a week or even a month in each location. Though it was great to hit five countries in twelve days, it wasn’t so great to have to leave each one so quickly.

Sometimes, when traveling in Europe, we just like to slow down, plant ourselves at an outdoor cafe and soak in the atmosphere. Some people like this quicker style of travel, but it’s not our preferred approach.

Spotty Internet

As internet junkies, it was a bit stressful to have spotty internet during our Viking Rhine getaway. Though out of the ship’s control and likely common on river cruises on the Rhine, the internet (or lack thereof) was a bit of a bummer.

Final Thoughts on Our Viking Rhine River Cruise

Kitchen Staff - Rhine Cruise with Viking River Cruises

Clearly, we loved a lot more about the Rhine cruise than we didn’t love. Does this mean that we’ve crossed over to being cruise people? Well, we wouldn’t go that far, but we’re very open to taking another cruise to help us with that transition.

You should check out Viking Cruises when you're ready to try a river cruise. They really do a nice job with all the details and the overall experience.

Wow, your trip looked amazing! I agree with everyone here about not being a super cruise-y person because I put a high value on my independence, but I went on a narrow boat trip in England when I was younger and really loved it, so I'm definitely interested in going on another river cruise in the future. I came across this tour site a while back that lets you compare different river cruise companies and trips and it's super cool- ever since I have been toying with the idea of booking a cruise and I think you guys just sold me on it haha!

Viking River Cruises — 9 Tips For Enjoying The Best Cuisine On And Off The Ship

viking rhine river cruise menu

  • Cruises and Sailing
  • River Cruises
  • Types of Travel
  • Viking Cruises

Viking River Cruises appeal to travelers of all ages and interests. Different destinations, itineraries, crew members, special events, and fellow passengers make each journey unique. The one thing we think all Viking River Cruise travelers have in common is an interest in delicious cuisine both on and off the ship. With several different dining options, you may not know which to choose.

We have some thoughts about how to get the most from both the meals offered on the ship and opportunities to savor the tastes of travel when you’re ashore. Here are our top tips for enjoying the best cuisine on and off the ship during a Viking River Cruise .

We were guests of Viking River Cruises for one of their itineraries. All opinions expressed are our own based on our experiences.

1. Plan Ahead

The first thing you’ll want to do is know when you’ll have the chance to try local cuisine off the ship and when you’ll need to eat on board . Sometimes you have your option of both. If you’re concerned about additional cost for meals in destinations, plan for main meals on the ship and go try a snack, share a dish with a companion or fellow passenger, or have drinks or dessert at the stop. There will usually be at least one themed meal that highlights local flavors, so plan to enjoy that one onboard. Check to see what excursions are available and if there’s nothing that includes a food or market tour or tasting that you’d like, try to book one on your own for the time you’ll be at that destination. Some Viking offerings do include lunch ashore, so be in the know on what is included in each of your planned activities.

2. Meet Fellow Travelers At Mealtimes

Sometimes the ship is moving during mealtime and you don’t have the option to go to a local spot to eat. Take advantage of this time to meet some of your fellow travelers. If you have special dietary needs, you can stay in the dining room and eat at the same table with the same servers who will get to know you and your needs. The same fellow travelers may come and sit with you regularly or you may meet others who join you for a time. We enjoy meeting a variety of people by eating at different tables and even at different venues on the ship. The Aquavit Terrace offers indoor and outdoor dining, so if weather permits, you can get a delicious dose of alfresco dining, too. It’s fun to share experiences, conversations, and ideas with a wide variety of people throughout the trip.

3. Ask For Dining Recommendations

The Viking brand has strong loyalty among its passengers, so several people on your trip will have traveled with them before, some even taking the same itinerary. They are a wealth of information about where you might go to grab a bit of local flavor. The crew are also knowledgeable and can help you with their own recommendations for what to explore. Before you go, spend some time researching where you will be docking so you can find interesting places nearby. If you get off and don’t know where to go, ask some locals. We’ve found that people love to talk about food and are usually delighted to share their favorites with visitors.

4. Decide What You’ll Be Drinking

Beverages are part of the pleasure of dining. With Viking River Cruises you have a few options and you should think about which makes the most sense for you before you come aboard. Your standard package will come with complimentary house wines, beers, and soft drinks during lunch and dinner onboard. There are also two coffee stations with tea and coffee available at all hours. You’ll need to pay for cocktails and beverages beyond the house offerings separately. If you’re not likely to drink much else, you can pay as you go. If you prefer to have unlimited access to premium local wines, beers, spirits, specialty coffees, soft drinks, and juices throughout the day and an open bar during operating hours, consider the flat fee Silver Spirits Beverage Package. The package price is based on the length of your cruise, so once you buy it you don’t have to think about it again. One other option is to bring your favorite drinks with you or purchase local beverages at your favorite stops. Most ship staterooms come with a refrigerator. Find that out in advance so you can store cold drinks if you like.

5. Provide Details On Dietary Concerns In Advance

The culinary teams and crew go out of their way to ensure that every guest has the best experience possible. Meals usually include seafood or vegetarian options. If you’re allergic or sensitive to certain foods or ingredients, tell them 90 days in advance of your departure so they can do their best to accommodate you. Introduce yourself to the maitre d’ when you board so they can get to know you too. Viking will make every effort to address your dietary concerns.

One of the writers enjoying food on a shore excursion.

6. Make The Most Of Time Ashore

A certain number of shore activities come with your itinerary. There are also special excursion or extension packages you can purchase separately. When you do, be sure to include a culinary stop during your adventure. Some excursions include overnight stays where you can explore a destination’s food scene in depth. Others, including those that come with your package, can explore a specific attraction or area. Whenever you have free time in the destination, visit the local restaurants, bars, bakeries, markets, and street food vendors. If you’ve discovered through your research that the area has special cuisine, find a place to give it a try. For example, we took Viking’s Romantic Danube itinerary, with stops in Germany , Austria , and Hungary . We tried sausages, schnitzel, Sacher torte , Langos , goulash, and other delicacies paired with regional beverages at our stops. This enabled us to enjoy authentic cuisine while also exploring venues and meeting locals.

7. Buy Culinary Snacks And Food Gifts To Take Home

When you go ashore, look for interesting snacks to try while you wander around. Stop in a souvenir shop or market and search the shelves for something you’ve heard about or seen others eat in the destination. When we were in Vienna , for example, we kept encountering these small round chocolates wrapped in foil. When we looked closer, we saw they had the image of Mozart right on the wrapping. We visited a local candy shop to buy some and learned that these Mozartkugel have a long history filled with Austrian pride. Bakeries, markets, convenience stores, and souvenir shops all usually have favorite treats on display. You can also purchase nibbles to take with you and enjoy during your journey or take home as gifts for your family and friends. The coffee stations on each ship often have pastries and cookies to go with your beverages, and sometimes those are local to the region. We enjoyed fresh lebkuchen — German iced, soft gingerbread cookies — with our tea.

8. Be Flexible When You Explore

Even though you’ll do lots of planning in advance for your trip, don’t forget to leave room for last-minute changes. Some of these changes may be the result of events beyond anyone’s control, like the weather and such. Viking may make alternative arrangements if it interrupts a planned excursion. Other times, you just may discover a super cute cafe with people enjoying food that looks delicious and decide you want to check it out. Or, you might hear about a special food, event, or vendor that strikes your fancy while you’re chatting with some locals. However you run into new ideas, don’t be afraid to give them a try. Some of our very favorite meals and memories come from totally unexpected places.

9. Enjoy Award-Winning Viking Demos And Recipes

Recently voted by its readers as the best cruise line in Food & Wine’s first-ever Global Tastemakers Awards , Viking offers creative and satisfying culinary programs that are well worth exploring.

Viking River Cruises does a great job of providing fun, regional culinary experiences for passengers onboard. For example, we had one dinner that featured local dishes and included live performances by musicians from the area. There was also a breakfast that included a special dish prepared by members of the staff who came from the region we were visiting. There may also be culinary demonstrations and classes on the ship where you can learn to make a local specialty. We learned to make linzer cookies and had a fun class decorating gingerbread houses. Many of Viking’s wonderful recipes are available online. If you’re interested, ask if you can meet the chef and get a tour of the galley . It’s a fun experience and great to see how the world-class kitchen staff work culinary wonders in such a small space. You might even learn a trick or two to use in your kitchen at home.

Viking River Cruises offer a world of culinary discovery, local flavors, and delicious experiences. With a little planning, some flexibility, a dose of curiosity, and our favorite tips, we’re sure you can enjoy the best cuisine on and off the ship.

Viking River Cruises Menus

Welcome to my Viking River Cruises Menus webpage. I have managed to get a few of the menus from one of my followers during her Viking River cruise. I am afraid that my knowledge does not go much further from what you see on this page. I have also attached a few of the pictures of the food that she took, from what you can see everything looks great!

Viking River Cruises Food

A river cruise is high on our to do list, hopefully we can manage to go on one something soon. Food is one of the main reasons that we cruise for, and from the looks of it seems like the Food Viking cruises will satisfy us and then some.

Remember, if you have pictures to share with us, please feel free to send me a private message.

What It’s Really Like on a Viking River Cruise

Want to know if a Viking River Cruise is right for you? I’m spilling all the details, including what they don’t tell you in the brochure, so you can make an informed decision. I’ll take you from Amsterdam to Basel, Switzerland along the Rhine River with lots of stops at charming old towns and villages in between. This Viking River cruise Rhine review is chock full of information that is helpful in planning your own Rhine getaway cruise.

I took 8 million photos so it’s impossible to share them all in one post. I’ll break up this trip into two posts so stay tuned for part two next weekend.

Viking River Cruise Best Things to Do on the Rhine River from Amsterdam to Basel Switzerland kellyelko.com #vikingrivercruise #vikingcruise #cruise #rivercruise #travel #luxurytravel #travelblog #travelblogger #amsterdam #basel #netherlands #switzerland #rhine #cruise #cruises #vacation #europevacation

When Viking invited me to set sail with them, I immediately packed my bags! Who wouldn’t want to sail to all the charming little European towns that dot the riverside? We traveled in October and I highly recommend Europe during this time of the year because not only do you get to experience the beautiful foliage and cooler temps, but it’s much less crowded and it’s cheaper too!

Viking River Cruise Rhine Review - everything you need to know to decide if a river cruise is right for you kellyelko.com #myvikingstory #vikingrivercruise #vikingcruise #rhinecruise #rhineriver #travel #travelblog #travelblogger #vikinglongship #kellyelko

What I love about the Viking Longships is that they are just the right size to float down the river and get up close and personal to all of the little towns. Plus there are only 90 staterooms which means it’s easy to get to know the crew and passengers. I love that you only have to unpack once instead of changing hotels every couple of days.

We sailed on the Hlin (pronounced “Lynn) on the 8 day Rhine River Cruise from Amsterdam to Basel , Switzerland (they do the same tour in the opposite direction too).

Booking was a breeze and a few weeks before we set sail, a package arrived in the mail with our personalized itineraries, red leather Viking luggage tags and more.

Airfare Tip: Viking can book your airfare and while I thought I could get a better deal by handling my own flights, I was wrong! I saved so much money by booking through Viking and I was able to have complete control over which flights I chose. So be sure to do your research. We flew into the Amsterdam airport.

We decided to add three nights in Amsterdam before the cruise and we’re so glad we did! With 165 canals, I can see why this is called “The Venice of the North.” Don’t let the stories of sex shops and pot scare you away because Amsterdam is so much more than that! I’ll share more about our time here in a separate post. Fun Fact: Amsterdam has more bikes than people!

Hotel Tip: If you are adding on time before and/or after your cruise, Viking offers lots of hotel packages you can choose as add ons to your trip. We saved money by booking our own hotels in Amsterdam and Basel because we didn’t feel we needed the extras that Viking offered including city tours and shuttle service to and from the ship.

Day 1 – Board Ship in Amsterdam

We celebrated our 24th wedding anniversary this day (October 13) and what a way to celebrate! We were greeted with a bottle of champagne and that night, after dinner, we were surprised to find a special “Happy Anniversary” dessert waiting for us in our room!

A buffet lunch was perfect for people who were arriving at different times of the day not to mention a late afternoon cheese and wine tasting, then dinner before we set sail that night. Can you say food coma?

Veranda Stateroom on a Viking River Cruise kellyelko.com #rivercruise #rhineriver #vikingrivercruise #vikingcruise #vikingstateroom #travel #travelbloggers #travelreviews

Our veranda stateroom was small but well laid out and I used the desk as my vanity (I loved the huge, well lit mirror) which made getting ready a breeze. The veranda made the room seem larger and I loved being able to pop outside to check the weather or just relax with a glass of wine. The bathroom was tiny but adequate (I loved the heated floors) but don’t expect to be able to bend over to shave your legs in the shower!

I’ll let you in on a little insider secret … when the boats dock, they often tie up to each other which means sometimes, you’ll have another boat parked smack dab against your window as you can see form the photo above. This is common on river cruises no matter which company you choose but it’s definitely something I want you to know before you go.

Viking River Cruise bathroom - small but love the heated floors kellyelko.com #vikingrivercruise #rivercruise #vikingcruise

It’s all about the common spaces and the lobby, with its glass roof, was such a welcoming place to come back to after a day spent exploring.

Viking River Cruise lobby - love the glass ceiling kellyelko.com #vikingrivercruise #vikingcruise #rivercruise

The top sun deck was the perfect place to walk off all of the food we seemed to be eating at every waking moment but hey, isn’t that what vacations are all about! I loved the fresh herb garden too.

Love the top deck of this Viking River ship with herb garden, walking track and golf kellyelko.com #vikingrivercruise #vikingcruise #viking #rivercruise #rhineriver #travel #travelblogger

Day 2 – Kinderjidk

We woke up to this peaceful view from our veranda. After breakfast, we only had to take a short walk to our destination (led by our guide of course).

Tip: There is an intercom in every stateroom so you can hear early morning wake up calls and announcements of when and where to meet for excursions. If you plan on sleeping in, be sure to turn off the intercom!

Love our veranda on our Viking River Cruise kellyelko.com #myvikingjourney #vikingrivercruise #vikingcruise #rhineriver #netherlands

You may be wondering is it worth getting a balcony on a river cruise and I can definitely say it was amazing! However, if it’s not in your budget, the French balcony cabins with their floor to ceiling doors that can be opened to catch the breeze are wonderful too.

Today’s shore excursion takes us to Kinderdijk which is a UNESCO World Heritage site with 19 enormous windmills. This is an included tour so it costs no extra money! It is such a spectacular sight to behold and straight out of a fairytale. Our local guide took us into a working windmill where families still live today.

The best part about returning to the ship was being surprised with a different daily treat in our stateroom.

Fresh strawberries on a river cruise kellyelko.com

The afternoon was spent on board taking in the scenery as we cruised along the Rhine.

Day 3 – Cologne Germany

It’s all about the food and the breakfasts on the ship were fabulous! We loved the made to order omelettes. Breakfasts were casual buffets while lunches and dinners were more formal sit down meals. I loved the casual dress code because after a long day of exploring, it was nice not to have to worry about getting all dolled up for meals.

Viking River Cruise - love the omelette station kellyelko.com #rivercruise #vikingrivercruise #travel #travelblogger #travelblog

We boarded a bus for a short ride to Cologne where our tour guide gave us a quick lay of the land then left us on our own to explore. The Cologne Cathedral (another UNESCO World Heritage sight) is HUGE and it was pretty impossible to get a decent photo!

the massive Cologne Cathedral in Cologne Germany is a UNESCO World Heritage site kellyelko.com #colognegermany #colognecathedral #travel #rhineriver #travelblogger #europevacation

Did you know Cologne is where the original Eau de Cologne was invented! I had to find the Farina Fragrance Museum and pick up some of the iconic red packages for friends and family (and of course one for me).

Farina Fragrance Museum makes the original Eau de Cologne Farina 1709 kellyelko.com #eaudecologne #farina1709 #colognegermany #perfume #farina #rhineriver #germany #travelblogger #rhinerivercruise

When in Cologne, you must drink Kölsch beer in an original “Brauhaus” (a traditional German pub where the beer is brewed). The waiters will continue to refill your glass unless you put your coaster on top to signal that you’re done!  By law, this refreshingly light brew can only be produced in Cologne so don’t miss it!

Drink Kolsch beer at a real Brauhaus while in Cologne Germany kellyelko.com #kolsch #colognegermany #brauhaus #germany #travel #beer #travelblogger #rhineriver #rivercruise

When we had our fill of Cologne, we enjoyed strolling across the Love Locks Bridge to get back to the ship.

Love Locks bridge in Cologne Germany kellyelko.com #lovelocksbridge #colognegermany #travel #rivercruise #rhineriver

Our ship had a prime location with a spectacular view of the bridge and the cathedral! The ship has two dining areas and this is the more casual Aquavit lounge with seating inside and out on the front (or the bow) of the ship.

Viking River Cruise - love the views from the glass enclosed restaurant kellyelko.com #vikingrivercruise #vikingcruise #rivercruise #vikinglongship #travel #travelblog #cruisereviews

We loved getting to know the friendly crew including Captain Wim, Sara our Program Director, and Mohamed (or Mo as everyone called him) the Hotel Manager. They mixed and mingled with the guests and one morning when we found the Captain sitting alone at breakfast in the main dining room, we joined him and had a great time chatting.

There are lots of optional night tours too like the popular Cologne’s Beer Culture Dinner but we enjoyed touring the beer halls on our own so we were happy to eat dinner on the ship.

Tip: House wine is served at lunch and dinner but if you prefer a nicer bottle of wine and cocktails, I recommend buying the Silver Spirits package so you can get unlimited drinks any time of the day or night!

Day 4 – Koblenz Germany

We chose to tour Marksburg Castle (there are many tour options to choose from every day) which is one of the few remaining castles on the Rhine that has remained intact. We took a short bus drive up a winding road to the top of a hill and were met with this spectacular view! There are optional tours this day including a walking tour of Koblenz so you’ll have to decide which one works best for you.

Middle Rhine Castle Corridor

When we were done exploring the castle, we went back to the ship to enjoy the most scenic sailing day of the trip!

Viking River Cruise along the Rhine River kellyelko.com #rivercruise #vikingrivercruise #myvikingjourney #vikinghlin #rhineriver #vacation #europevacation #travel #travelblog #travelblogger

This stretch of the Rhine is filled with castles perched high in the hills. Most have been turned into luxury hotels! There are tons of castles on both sides of the river.

We sailed past this spectacular 430 foot Lorelei Rock where legend has it that the beautiful maiden Lorelei sunk the ships of distracted sailors.

Lorelei Rock on a Rhine River cruise kellyelko.com #rhineriver #rivercruise #vikingcruise #myvikingjourney #loreleirock #germany #travel #travelblog #travelblogger

A little wind and rain didn’t dampen our spirits! The upper deck of the ship has a clear overhang making it perfect for being able to take in the sights while staying dry. Viking handed out a map of the castles and Sara, our Program Director, gave commentary over the loud speaker. If you want to see the castles up close and personal, pack a pair of binoculars.

Tip: Pack layers! We traveled in October and some days called for heavy coats while other days, a long sleeve shirt was all that was needed. Also, pack a small travel umbrella (Viking provides bright red umbrellas but you’ll stand out like a tourist if you use one)!

Rudesheim Germany

What a day! After being wowed by the castles, we docked in Rudesheim around 5 pm just in time for dinner. The only problem was, not many restaurants were open so we spent our time wandering around this charming little town of vine covered, story book buildings.

The charming Rhine river village of Rudesheim Germany has beautiful vine covered buildings kellyelko.com #Rudesheim #germany #rivercruise #rhineriver #travel #travelblog #travelblogger #vacation #europe #europevacation

I was a little bit disappointed and didn’t think there was much to do here (lots of touristy t-shirt shops) so we eventually took the scenic walk along the river back to our ship where it was time to dine!

I can’t wait to share Melissa! Rooting through 8 million photos right now!

We took this fabulous Viking cruise a couple of years ago, so reading this post brought back so many memories! The canals and charm of Amsterdam (even the red light zone : ), the castles along the Rhine and the spectacular windmills were just a few of the many enchanting sights we viewed from the balcony of the ship. Having sailed on both ocean liners and river cruise ships, I have to say that river cruises have so much more to offer in terms of comfort, size and individual services. Highly recommend! Happy Anniversary and can’t wait to hear how you enjoyed Strasbourg!

Amsterdam is incredible and I definitely want to go back! The best part about a river cruise is no sea sickness!

Oh, wow! I loved this! I get mail from Viking and wondered what one of their cruises would be like. I feel like all cruise ships have small rooms and bathrooms so that won’t deter me. The sites look amazing! Thank you for sharing! I am looking forward to Part 2!

Small bathrooms aren’t the end of the world I was just happy to have such a great counter space in the bedroom. Very well thought out!

We were on the Viking Villi during that same time! Our trip was Amsterdam to Budapest and then we racked on days in Amsterdam and Prague. Beautiful sights on the river and cities. Loved Cologne, Kolsch beer, Cathedral and the Lock bridge, and also bought cologne!

How funny! Maybe we sailed by each other Linda!

First, Congratulations on 24 yrs of marriage! Second, can’t wait to hear more about your trip, it looks amazing. The trip has lots of beautiful sites to see. Looks like I’ll have to add this journey to my list.

So many places to see, so little time Tammara!

What a beautiful trip! We haven’t gone a cruise before, and have even been reluctant. Thank you for sharing the beauty saw and tips on how to set up everything.

I’ve only been on a big ocean cruise over 25 years ago and didn’t love it but this is so different! Smaller ships that go right to the little towns!

Happy Anniversary!! This was very informative Kelly. Awesome job! I love the windmills and the pics of you and your husband. May I ask about all the purses hanging up??

Ok I’m so dumb and embarrased. I just googled it and saw that they are locks, not purses. On my phone it looks like purses. 😢😔

Don’t be embarrassed Lisa! Now that I look, they do look like a bunch of purses!

Viking is wonderful! We did the Amsterdam, Windmills and Tulips one in March-April. It was fabulous! So beautiful. We have been on the Seine Paris to Normandy. Highly, highly recommend that trip. We have booked and scheduled our next one, the Mediterranean Odyssey. Barcelona, Venice, all and everything in between! We always book the bigger Veranda’s. Sitting area separate from the bedroom/bathroom. Highly recommend! Did I say I love Viking cruises?!?! Glad you had that wonderful time. You need to treat yourselves to another! Thanks for sharing your trip!

Wow Melanie sounds like you are a river cruise fanatic! We met so many people on the cruise who had taken others in the past and I think that shows how great they really are to have people keep coming back for more! Enjoy the Med! I’ve been to Venice and it’s fabulous but very crowded!

Thanks for all this information, yes i have thought about it and wondered what they were like so i am writing down all these tips. You guys are such a cute couple no wonder your girls are so pretty.

Thanks so much Marlene! Our girls definitely hit the looks jackpot and they’re funny and smart to boot!

We took the same cruise in May of 2013. Love revisiting & reminiscing. Thank you.

How nice! I enjoyed writing the post and remembering all the fun we had (and it’s only been 3 months)!

Thank you for your comment. We are taking this cruise this May for our 50th anniversary. First time on a cruise. Are there any hints that would help. It does not sound like there were any negatives that we need to be concerned about. Ellie

We did this journey on our own years ago, visiting Marksburg Castle which was amazing. The stories told by our German speaking tour guide was incredible (we don’t speak German so we eavesdropped on a girl who was translating for her friend). I timed our trip to do the Rhine in Flames. To this day, my family still says it was the most incredible fireworks display we’ve ever seen. Hundreds of boats, decorated with Christmas lights, even though it was July, line up and we all set sail up the Rhine. From each of those castles fireworks began going off and it was a sight to see! We stayed in Rudesheim and when I woke up early in the morning and opened the shutters, I did feel like I was in a fairy tale. I have blonde hair & as I was gazing over the rooftops I heard clicking & chattering in maybe Japanese(?) below. Apparently my blonde hair made me look like a typical German Frau and they were pushing each other out of the way to take my picture!! I’ve always wanted to do a cruise, avoid the terror I always feel driving on the autobahn so I’m looking forward to the rest of your post.

I love that you will appear in all of those tourists photo albums Darlene! The fireworks sound spectacular!

Hi, Kelly. We did this same cruise 2 years ago at Christmas (seeing those famous Christmas markets has been on my bucket list for a while and I wasn’t disappointed). So glad to hear you had a favorable experience. Coming from Miami, I thought I knew cruising. But Viking takes it up a notch. Also, while I’m not an ocean cruise fan, river cruising is a whole ‘nother thing. Travel is about your destination – the terrain, people, customs, etc. These Viking cruises allow you to appreciate and enjoy that. Can’t wait to read the second post. Bet I know your favorite city already! Oh, and happy anniversary!

I went on one ocean cruise 25 years ago and wasn’t a fan! I know Viking does some though – maybe I’ll have to try one of theirs! The Christmas markets sound amazing and I’d love to go back for them.

I enjoyed reading this Kelly – I did an AmaWaterways cruise in Dec ’18 – basically the same route you took, but started in Basel – I THOROUGHLY enjoyed it! I’m doing another cruise in May of this year – this time up the Danube (with Ama) – looking at your pic’s of the ship, ours was pretty comparable – that was really ‘different’ the way the boats dock next to each other!

How fun Leanne! At one stop, we were tied to an Ama ship and had to walk across it to get to land! The Danube sounds fabulous and I hope you enjoy your trip!

What a wonderful experience! Your photos are so beautiful and it’s nice to see what the ship looked like…It really is a good size and your stateroom looked comfortable too! Those huge Caribbean type cruise ships never appealed to me but this is definitely something I would like. Much more intimate with constantly changing scenery! Great tips, Kelly! Shelley

I went on one ocean cruise over 25 years ago and I wasn’t a huge fan! The small ship really appealed to me Shelley!

Fun Kelly! That’s the same cruise Mark and I took last May & we loved it. We are going on another Viking River Cruise in September to France & we are excited. It was fun to see your pics of all the places we went.

How exciting Rhoda! Are you taking the Paris to Normandy trip along the Seine? If so, don’t miss Diane’s post!

Kelly, you did a wonderful job with descriptions and photos of your excursions. My sister and I are taking the Rhine Getaway trip in July of 2023. Since the descriptions of the excursions on the Viking site are not very detailed it difficult to decide which ones to take. We are trying to decide between the Medieval Colmar and the WWII Colmar excursions. I have heard positive and negative reviews of the Medieval trip. Also it looks like the food tour in Alsace is a lot more extensive than the description of it. It looks like you see more places along the way than I had imagined. Thank you for any input you might have.

You can always call Viking for a more detailed description of the tours Elaine! The Alsace was a highlight of our trip for sure. So many great little shops and food we would never have tried on our own. Enjoy your trip with your sister!

Viking Rhine River Cruise: Visit 3 Countries On A Floating Hotel

Viking Hild

When we sailed on a Viking Rhine River cruise on the Rhine and Moselle Rivers, we were unsure of what to expect. Although the itinerary included some fabulous cities, many of the port stops on the itinerary were in smaller cities, towns, and villages with new-to-us names.

We soon came to realize why Rhine River cruises are so wildly popular:

Reasons to take a Viking Rhine River Cruise

1) scenic beauty.

Morning mist over the Moselle River in Germany

Our Viking Rhine River Cruise passed through three counties— Switzerland, France and Germany—where the banks of the rivers are lush and green in springtime.

With beautiful scenery and fresh mountain air, it’s not surprising that the region is so popular with hikers, bicyclists and campers.

As the ship meandered the rivers, the spacious, glass-doored balcony of our stateroom on Viking Hild (as well as public areas on the ship) offered “box seats” to view the ever-changing spectacle of verdant hillsides dotted with medieval castles, and ornate church spires and steeples. The right-sized longship held a maximum of 190 guests.

Sitting on the balcony, we could often hear church bells ringing.

Cathedral in Mainz

One of the prettiest and most spellbinding portions of the cruise is along the Middle Rhine, also called the Rhine Gorge. With more than 23 picturesque castles, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

We found spectacular vantage points on the shores, too, whether from the top of a church or castle window.

Cathedral in Mainz, Germany

One of the most thrilling views was from a cable car in Koblenz suspended over the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers. (The view of our ship above was taken from the cable car.)

2) Engaging Ports

Although many cities on the Rhine suffered bombing during World War II, many have well-preserved or reconstructed “old towns” brimming with history.

Their small streets and cobblestone alleys lined with half-timbered houses and different architectural styles reflect the long and diverse multicultural history of Western Europe.

We fell in love with the winding streets of Koblenz , one of Germany’s oldest and most beautiful cities with one of Europe’s biggest aerial tramways.

Unusual roofline of the old synagogue in Koblenz

3) Wine Country

Our route on the Rhine and Moselle rivers passed through some of Germany’s most spectacular wine-growing regions (much like the river cruise itineraries do on the Douro River in Portugal).

Vineyard views along the route

Onboard, the wine steward pairs complimentary local wines with both lunch and dinner. Other premium wines and spirits can be ordered, at cost, at the ship’s bar.

Chilled glass of local Riesling

Shore excursions include visits to vineyards, wine tastings, and ample opportunities to savor a glass of local Riesling at a bar.

Of course, Germany is also known for its beers, often best enjoyed in one of the ubiquitous beer gardens.

4) Wonders of Navigation

If you’ve never traveled through canal or river locks, this is an opportunity to witness this fascinating technology.

Viking Hild traveled through 18 locks over the course of our cruise, some of them at nigh). They remind travelers of the importance of the European waterways, once used primarily for trade and transport of goods from city to city and country to country.

Johannes Bons, Captain of the Hild, at the bridge explaining the system of locks

Locks enable vessels to move smoothly on a river or canal even while water levels on both sides of the lock vary. Ships enter a closed compartment, where it is locked between two doors, as the water level is adjusted up or down.

Warning: Don’t stick your hands out the balcony. From your Viking stateroom, you can see that there isn’t much clearance between your ship and the high encasement, requiring expert navigation skills on the part of the captain.

Entering one of the locks on the river

To this day, the Rhine continues to be one of the most essential waterways in Europe. In addition to other riverboats, you’ll still find many interesting container ships and working barges along the way.

5) A Feast for Foodies

A Viking Rhine River Cruise is a feast for foodies. Food lovers will revel in all the opportunities to taste local specialties both on the ship and off.

Viking has been making great strides to incorporate local food products and recipes into its menus.

During our Viking Rhine River Cruise, the crew organized a delightful  “German Night” with an all-German buffet dinner, local beers and wines and festive music.

Some of the delectable local specialties served on German night on the Viking Hild

On land, kiosks, food trucks and quaint restaurants lure you to savor new tastes.

For example, you can sample hearty dishes like raclette and fondue in Switzerland or taste Alsatian specialties like kougelhopf (a delicious, yeasty cake made in a Bundt mold) or a tarte flamb é e (a flatbread-like dough topped with crème-fraîche, cheese and thinly-sliced onions).

Or you may stop for a warm pretzel or grilled wurst (sausage) at a kiosk on one of many town squares, or simply rest your feet and people-watch over coffee at an outdoor café.

We happed upon a food truck festival in Koblenz

Opportunities for tasting local cheeses are endless—and who can resist Swiss chocolates?

Worried about calories? Most river cruise guests walk an average of 3-5 miles per day during shore excursions.

6) Welcoming tourism Infrastructure

Small group tour on Viking Rhine River Cruise with English-speaking guide

Of course, river cruises offer the convenience of only packing and unpacking once!

But there are other reasons why our Viking Rhine River cruise was hassle-free. Because Western Europe has a well-developed tourism infrastructure, local guides are English-speaking and tend to be quite knowledgeable about history, customs and culture. (Viking provides free, guided excursions at every port.)

Cities and towns are conveniently close to the rivers. And many tours include free time to wander at your own pace, stop for a snack, peek into small boutiques, and/or talk to townsfolk who are generally eager to engage with Americans.

…and one more reason

There’s something very peaceful and hassle-free about the slow pace of cruising the Rhine on a floating hotel.

Both on land and on water, you pass relaxed locals sitting on park benches, tending their flower and vegetable gardens, or riding bicycles by the river banks.

You’ll soon feel at one with the tranquility and authenticity of the river.

What’s appealing to the over-50 luxury traveler?

  • You’ll get to visit France, Germany, Switzerland and Luxembourg (briefly) and get a feel for the diversity of Western Europe. This “sampler” will help you find destinations to which you’ll want to return.
  • The best time to take a Rhine River Cruise is during the spring and fall shoulder seasons, which are less touristed.
  • The Viking crew is extremely nurturing and professional; they make sure you feel well taken care of from the time you land at the airport abroad until your departure for home.
  • With a no-kids onboard policy, you’ll be among other mature, mostly over-50, intellectually curious people who love to travel.
  • Except for such things as optional excursions, specialty drinks, and gifts and souvenirs, the trip is mostly inclusive so you’ll know your costs before you leave home.

Viking River Cruises: Paris to Swiss Alps in 12 Glorious Days

S et sail on a river of dreams with our 12-day magical Paris to Swiss Alps Viking River Cruises adventure. There’s something so special about unpacking once and waking up at a new destination daily. Picture this — a boutique floating hotel where friendly faces greet you, culinary delights await your taste buds, and endless views captivate your heart.

OR Join us as we recollect our 12-day fairy tale aboard a Viking River Cruise, beginning through the romantic streets of Paris and winding down to the snow-kissed peaks of the Swiss Alps. If the travel bug bites you and you daydream about cruises that take the scenic route, buckle up; this one’s for you.

If you have been looking for a great cruise itinerary with  the best of both worlds (cruising and land trip) , this Paris to the Swiss Alps cruise may be the one for you. Let me show you what Viking River Cruises is all about and what this trip entails.

Thanks to Viking River Cruises for hosting my travel arrangements and stays. As always, opinions and reviews are 100% mine and unbiased.

A Journey Begins in the City of Lights

Paris, the city that sparkles, was our first stop. Soon after our arrival, greeted by the warm Viking team, we found ourselves unwinding at the Marriott Paris Rive Gauche – our cozy haven for the next few days.

High-quality service? Check. Oh-so-comfy beds? Double-check.

Eager to kick things off, my husband, Eddie, and I hopped aboard the metro  straight to the iconic Eiffel Tower .  Pro Tip:  meander around the base and capture those Insta-worthy snapshots—Paris in all its iron-laced glory!

Opting for a scenic Seine River cruise was a no-brainer. We floated by Parisian treasures like the Louvre, Musée d’Orsay, and Notre Dame, whose architectural splendor during the golden hour is a photographer’s dream.

Cherished Moments and a Brush with History

Viking knows how to charm its guests—a guided tour skipping the queues at Notre Dame (a day before the fire, mind you) was a poignant moment we’ll never forget. Post-tour, we rummaged through quirky souvenir shops and indulged in the ultimate French sandwich, the Croque Monsieur, perfectly complemented by a rich Parisian hot chocolate.

Starting the day right, Viking laid out an array of breakfast options in a room inside the Marriott hotel, including fresh bread, cheeses, delicious cold cuts, and more, with a fabulous selection of brews and juices to wash it all down.

A Palace Straight Out of a Fairytale

Are you craving more culture? Us too! That’s why we didn’t think twice about the extra excursion to Versailles, a  UNESCO World Heritage Site  that sees over six million visitors annually. It’s worth every penny of the $150, trust me. Viking whisked us away, and just like that, we bypassed the long lines to step into the opulence of the  Palace of Versailles .

King-size luxury, intricate details, and glistening chandeliers – even among the throngs, the Hall of Mirrors caught our breath in its shimmering reflection.

Luxembourg – A Delightful Detour

With Paris bidding us adieu, we ventured onto Luxembourg City. Just a short scenic drive and voilà—local guides were at the ready, sharing insights and hidden gems. “Un café et pain” (a cafe, meaning coffee, and bread) soon became our go-to phrase, savoring coffee breaks with a side of the local pastry du jour.

We discovered that Luxembourg City wasn’t just easy on the eyes but kind to our wallets regarding shopping and dining. And get this: mine and Eddie’s first date, 31 years ago, was to Chi-Chis, where we saw one in the city.

A Tribute to Heroes in Luxembourg

Our expedition took an unexpected turn as we ventured beyond the urban charms of Luxembourg City and stumbled upon a place of profound honor – the  Luxembourg American Cemetery and Memorial . We were moved to silence and tears among the thousands of white crosses marking the bravery of WWII heroes like General George S. Patton.

The place’s serenity contrasted with its tumultuous history, leaving us awestruck. By the way, this cemetery is maintained by America.

Trivia Fact:  5073 WWII service members from  Battle of the Bulge  are buried here.

Climbing back aboard the magnificent Viking Kvasir, the welcome couldn’t have been warmer. Stateroom cards in hand, our belongings whisked to our cabins, we were soon clinking glasses in a toast with newfound friends, the prelude to a scrumptious dinner, which follows nightly.

Germany Welcomes Us with History and Wine

In the warmth of our fourth morning, Trier awaited us. Trier isn’t just any German city — it’s brimming with history as the oldest in the nation and was once the Holy Roman Empire’s capital.

Our eager bodies followed the cobblestone paths to Roman gates and baroque palaces, each step a footprint in time. The Porta Nigra (ancient city gate) was the best photo op.

Our cruise to Bernkastel-Kues was a sequence of picturesque vignettes in the Moselle Valley. Remember to glimpse the circa 1608 Renaissance Rathaus and the St. Michael Fountain — moments in stone that captured our imaginations. This was my favorite port on the entire cruise.

Snack Tip: Pick up an ultimate cheesy pretzel or pizza spargel from a street vendor.

Sipping Riesling in Bernkastel-Kues

Opting for a ‘Tour & Tasting,’ we savored the robust Rieslings of the region at  Dr. Pauly Bergweiler , memories of honey and apricot dancing on our tongues. There’s something special about enjoying a vintage right where it’s born. They also had a tasty ice wine.

Other optional excursions unfurled the historic tapestries of Mainz and Strasbourg. Whether following in the steps of Martin Luther or sipping more wine while gazing at Alsatian vineyards, each opportunity was a gem waiting to be uncovered.

Once the wine had settled into pleasant recollections, we ventured to dine at Gasthaus Burkard . The evening highlight? A succulent Pork Jagerschnitzel paired with handmade Spaetzle. It doesn’t get much better than this.

Mesmerizing Moselle Valley

Our Viking Kvasir glided into Cochem, and we couldn’t resist the allure of exploring on our own during the five-hour window. Half-timbered houses seemed to whisper tales of yore as we wandered through the picturesque streets.

A ride on the Cochem Chairlift confirmed what our hearts already knew—this land is spellbinding. We grabbed amazing photos from this vantage point, and it cost less than ten euros each.

We skipped the guided steps up to 11th-century Reichsburg Castle, instead choosing to meander on our own, allowing us to absorb Cochem at our pace, a decision as rewarding as the panoramic views.

Scenic cruising unveiled the expansive Moselle Wine Country — a carpet of 22,000 miles of terraced hillside vineyards unfurling before us in the Upper Middle Rhine Valley.

Day six led to Koblenz, a trove of German wonders from shopping in the Four Towers to the historic fort of Festung Ehrenbreitstein. Here, find a corner under a covered table, fill up your coffee cup, and marvel at the mouthwatering pastries — a pleasure for the senses.

People-watching is supreme.

Jewels Along the Rhine

With the whispers of legendary sirens of the Lorelei rock still in our ears, Wiesbaden beckoned. A spontaneous discovery led us to margaritas and chips & salsa as delightful as the city itself, followed by a fountain McDonald’s Diet Coke, which had us rejoicing to no end.

Here, in the heart of savory experiences and cobblestoned mazes, we celebrated the luxury of choice and the thrill of discovery that a Viking River Cruise offers.

Wiesbaden Nights and Mainz Mornings

Day seven dawned in Mainz, a major trade center in the Middle Ages, with its stellar attractions—the Gutenberg Museum and Mainz Cathedral. Viking cruises have their magic, granting us a private peek into the celebrated museum on a day it is typically closed.

The museum vividly depicted Johannes Gutenberg’s groundbreaking press. Today, only 49 copies of the 180 original Gutenberg Bibles exist.

The quiet beauty of Marc Chagall’s blue-stained glass windows in St. Stephen’s Church (built in 990AD) was a sobering counterpoint to the jubilant sweet flavors we later savored from a nearby cafe. We are holding our own on keeping up with daily pastries and coffees.

Speyer – Where History and Taste Collide

Speyer, a storied name etched into the UNESCO annals, brought us face-to-face with the monumental  Speyer Cathedral . Its echoing halls and soaring organ note our symphony for the day, with eight emperors of old in their eternal sleep beneath, meaning they are buried here.

Peppered boutiques and cafes dotted the town we explored before we surrendered to the siren call of fresh pretzels and flavored teas at Maximilian Cafebar Restaurant. We then indulged in a hearty baked Italian dish from  Restaurant Porta Nuova .

A Technik Museum visit rounded off our tale in Speyer, treating our eyes to a fabulous collection of vintage cars and planes of yesteryear.

A Feast of Sights and Flavors

Returning on board meant not just rest but a celebration, with Captain Patrik and Chef Jakub conjuring a barbecue that turned lunch into a feast under open skies, setting the tone for the mélange of experiences that Viking River Cruises represent.

Our meal on the Aquavit Terrace featured four types of sausages, mustards for dipping, potato salad, and several side dishes.

Strasbourg, France – An Easter Day of Discovery

On the ninth day of our cruise, we bid farewell to our floating home with a day in the storybook town of Strasbourg. This gem in France’s Alsace region greeted us with its fairy-tale charm. Imagine – half-timbered houses, winding cobblestone streets, and a relaxed morning tour that was just a teaser of the town’s beauty.

Post-lunch, adventure-seekers had the option of a wine-tasting tour, but we couldn’t resist the pull of Strasbourg a moment longer. We ventured back on our own, meandering through Petite France, where cafes and souvenir shops welcomed us even on Easter Sunday.

Notre Dame Cathedral Strasbourg beckoned, but a snaking line guided us towards a delightful plan B – indulging in sweet and savory crepes at La Cigogne Bar & Creperie. Who knew defeat could taste this delicious?

Viking didn’t forget it was Easter; we returned to find luxurious Lindt chocolates and colored eggs waiting to add sweetness to our staterooms and breakfast tables. Such thoughtful delights!

And if you haven’t been to Europe on or during Easter, be prepared for white asparagus to be on your plate daily and at every vegetable stand you see.

Hello Basel, Switzerland – An Escapade with Grandeur

Transitioning from cruise to land, we discovered the vibrant spirit of Basel, our first Swiss encounter. The architectural splendor of Market Square captivated us during our short walking tour, with the city’s bustling rhythm starkly contrasting our tranquil days on the river.

Despite the holiday (Good Monday), Viking masterfully orchestrated an excursion to Rheinfall – Europe’s largest waterfall. Here, we were given the precious gift of time – 90 minutes to immerse ourselves in the majesty of cascades that rivaled the grandiosity of New York’s Letchworth.

Last Stop: Zürich – A Tale of Two Worlds

On our 10th day, we dawned at the  Sheraton Zürich Hotel , a modern retreat that served as our base camp for exploring. Swiss efficiency shone through as we were whisked away on a tram to begin our  Zürich escapade .

The day unfolded with marvels like the Grossmünster Church, the Limmat River, and a surprising backdrop on our Lake Zürich cruise – the proud, snow-draped Swiss Alps. Fair warning, though; the boat tour, while a photographer’s dream, did have its lulls.

Eddie and I played explorers in the heart of the city, absorbing the stained-glass beauty of the Grossmünster and the Fraumünster’s green spire, adorned with Marc Chagall’s touch.

Amidst sightseeing, our palates embarked on their own voyage – from a hearty Thai buffet at the Blue Monkey to savoring traditional cheese fondue and dreamy raclette, each a Swiss culinary rite of passage.

With costs on the steeper side – dinners and simple refreshments averaging above 25 USD and 6 USD respectively – Switzerland reassured us that some experiences are truly priceless.

Revitalized, Recharged, and Reconditioned

Our voyage with Viking River Cruises culminated in a trove of memories, new friendships, and an expanded gallery on our phones. Yet, what stayed with me was the tranquility amidst the nonstop thrill—a testament to the truly immersive and well-crafted experience that Viking offers.

Having set sail on over 40 cruises, my unwavering affinity for Viking speaks volumes of their devotion to stitching together exceptional adventures for travelers like us.

Does the allure of a river cruise tempt you? Should any questions or musings set sail in your mind, I am all ears and more than happy to guide you through the tides.
