  • Once you have the app, you can either buy the digital card directly on your smartphone or redeem a card you have purchased on the website.
  • When you are ready to start exploring Copenhagen, you activate the card in the app .
  • You can then use the digital card by scanning its barcode at each attraction and showing it to the transport authorities when requested.

It's important to note that all cards on the same order will be activated at the same time. Just remember not to activate your card until you are ready to start using it. Enjoy your time in Copenhagen with the Copenhagen Card! The Copenhagen Card includes both a physical guidebook and an app to give you insight into what to see and do around the city, which is great if it's your first time in Copenhagen.

Where to buy the Copenhagen Card?

Visitors can buy the Copenhagen Card online , directly on their website or through the Copenhagen Card app on your smartphone. If you choose to purchase it on their website, you will receive a reference number that you can redeem on your phone using the app. Alternatively, you can buy the card directly on your smartphone through the app. Both options are convenient and allow you to easily access the benefits of the Copenhagen Card. Enjoy your visit to Copenhagen!

Let’s imagine you’re going to buy the 72 hour Copenhagen Card and you are going to use the card all day as you make your way through your jam-packed itinerary. This is what your trip could end up looking like:

  • Morning – Tivoli Gardens
  • Afternoon – Canal Tours Copenhagen
  • Morning – Glyptoteket
  • Afternoon – Rosenborg Castle
  • Morning – Copenhagen Zoo
  • Afternoon – The National History Museum of Denmark

Without a Copenhagen Card, this itinerary will cost you EUR 100 just on entry to the attractions you visit. That doesn’t factor in any public transport you use during that time, which could cost you up to EUR 53 if you are using it a lot. That brings the total to EUR 153.

With the Copenhagen Card, this itinerary will cost EUR 102 – the price of the 72-hour card.

city card copenhagen

On top of that, with the Copenhagen card in tow, you could save money on your meals by eating in the restaurants that offer a discount. Eating Danish food in Copenhagen is not cheap so saving 20% will be a welcome relief for your travel budget.

While this itinerary looks pretty busy, some of the attractions, such as the Rosenborg Castle, can be done in just a couple of hours, leaving you with time to add in a couple of extra attractions if you’re feeling zealous.

The Copenhagen Card is for anyone who wants to squeeze as much activity into their vacation as possible. Whether it's your first time or tenth time visiting the city, there's just so much to do.

Denmark is steeped in history and culture and there is no better way to learn all about it than by perusing the country’s finest museums, galleries, castles, palaces, and monuments.

If you are an active traveler and plan on packing a lot into your Copenhagen vacation, this card is really good value. Plus if you are traveling in a family, it is worth noting that two children under 10 can accompany each paying adult for free. That could make a serious difference in price if you want to drag your kids through museums all weekend or want to treat them to a trip to the zoo or the Tivoli Gardens.

While a lot of City Cards out there are not actually particularly good value, the Copenhagen Card is one of the exceptions. For the proactive traveler, this card could be a godsend.

copenhagen discounts

Having said that, in order to make this card worthwhile, you need to make sure you are visiting at least two of the attractions with free entry every day, otherwise, you just won’t make your money back with the amount you save.

If you want a chilled vacation, which involves wandering around the city and maybe popping into a museum or two, this card is not worth buying. It will be more economical in that scenario simply to buy individual tickets as and when you need them.

There isn’t much choice when it comes to buying the card. You simply buy the card that corresponds with the amount of time you will be there whether that's 24 hours, 48 hours, 72 hours, 96 hours, or 120 hours.

is copenhagen card worth it

Is the Copenhagen Card worth it?

Yes, Copenhagen Card is worth buying. It saves you a lot of money when you use it well. The Copenhagen Card is expensive but when you look at how much you can save when you use it well, it is worth buying. My first piece of advice is to go through the list above of attractions included with the card and make a note of everything you want to see during your trip.

Next, check the opening times of these attractions – some will be closed on Sundays or Mondays so you should plan the order in which you visit them accordingly. Also, be aware of what time they open and close each day.

Then, check where these attractions are situated on the map. It sounds obvious to say it, but I will anyway. If two or three attractions are all close to each other, try and plan your day so that you visit all of them in one go. This will save you precious time schlepping back and forth across the city, leaving you with more time to visit attractions and make the most of your card.

copenhagen card faq

Seeing as you have a public transport ticket attached to your Copenhagen Card, it makes sense to use it. Once the museums are closed and you can’t enjoy any more free entries, use your travel pass to explore the city. Hop on a tram or the metro and see where you end up. You might end up discovering a hidden gem while you’re at it.

Thank you for this great information. We are definitely considering buying the card. Perhaps I missed this, but I believe the train from the airport is also covered?

Hi again! One more question. We are both 65, so I was wondering whether there are senior rates for the museums and transit — and even for the card? Thank you!

Hey Cathy, Sorry for just getting to this now. There is no senior discount for the Copenhagen Card. Individual museums do have their own discounts, and transportation might as well, but it’s best to check the relevant websites for those as it’s a bit much to list all possible discounts in this article. Thanks!

Edward Greenwood says

Thank you for a very helpful post. I did exactly as you suggested and listed the attractions we wanted to see and then arranged them all by location. By the end of day three we were already saving money; the attraction costs alone exceeded the price of a five day card – without any allowance for the evenings or transport charges. Now, I can’t wait to get there. Thanks again.

Oh that sounds great! I hope you have a lovely trip.

Is Aarhus within the 99 zone?

I don’t know but I’m pretty sure you can easily Google that :)

We are going to be in Copenhagen 4 days . I was thinking of getting a 48 hour card and buying our return rail ticket from the airport . We will be spending one day with Danish friends driving into the country on our second day there . So I thought I would use the card for 3/4 day . What do you think ?

Hey Jill, I can’t comment on that without knowing what you want to do in Copenhagen. The article is written in such a way that you can make the calculation based on what your plans are and as such decide if it would be a good investment to get the card :) Have a lovely trip!

Chandramouli says

Hi, Planning a trip in a month’s time. Would prefer going round the city, than museums etc. Will it make sense to not buy this card. Then how about to and from airport, travel within the city etc. Will this be still economical than buying a card ? Thank you

Hi, The post has all the information you need to be able to figure out if the card is a good option for you or not. I can’t make this decision for individual readers :)

A Complete Guide to the Copenhagen Card

Copenhagen Card and Guide

If you’re considering a trip to Copenhagen, one of the things you will likely encounter in your research is the Copenhagen Card. Even if you’ve only spent five minutes on TripAdvisor or a quick glance at Denmark’s official tourist site you will likely have come across a mention of these but what do they cover? How do they work? And most importantly, is a Copenhagen Card worth it?

What is a Copenhagen Card?

Similar to many cities around the world, Denmark’s capital has opted to combine attraction tickets and offer a tourist pass. The card covers 79 attractions across Copenhagen and unlike some other city passes, the card extends outwith the city centre, covering attractions in greater metropolitan area.

Also included in the price is unlimited public transport in the whole of the city area from Zones 1- 99 which also encompasses the airport routes. As well as the “free” attractions, there are also discounts for additional tours, bike hire and some eateries as well.

Copenhagen Cards can be bought in several time increments starting at 24 hours up to a maximum of 120 hours and are available in adult and child version while children under 10 can travel on a parents card.

Copenhagen Card App Screenshot

Copenhagen Card App

As well as your card you can download the Copenhagen Card App onto your phone which gives you with all the information about attractions, their opening times and the nearest public transport stops. You can favourite locations to help plan your visit or simply use the map to see what is nearby.  Plus, the whole thing can be used offline. The Copenhagen Card App also has public transport maps and, if you don’t mind using data, it allows you to connect with google to find out the next bus or train to your chosen location. At present you still need to have a physical card but it looks like you might soon be able to simply use a QR code on the app instead.

Where to buy a Copenhagen Card and how much?

To purchase the card you can either order online before you arrive or buy a card in person once in Copenhagen. If you opt to purchase beforehand you can have the card posted out to your home address for a small fee but you’ll need to ensure sufficient time for it to arrive. The card’s official website actually suggests delivery can take up to six weeks so you’ll need to plan ahead. If you’re buying online you can also purchase the card in a number of different currencies.

If you don’t want to risk a late arrival or a card getting lost in the post the best option is to pick it up at one of the four collection points in Copenhagen . Just take along your emailed voucher and swap it for your cards. We chose to buy online and collect at Copenhagen Airport.

As of Feb 2018 Cards start at £47 | 389 DKK | €53 for an adult 24 hour card up to a maximum of  £107 | 889 DKK | €120   for the 120 hour option.

One of the benefits of the Copenhagen Card is that one adult can take up to two children up to the age of nine on their card and older children under 16 only require a child card which is roughly half the adult price. There are not currently any group or student discount options.

How to use the Copenhagen Card

Once you’ve got your physical card you will need to activate it before its first use. All you need to do is write the start date and time on the back. So, if you don’t plan to use your card right away you can delay the start time on the back until you’re ready to go to make sure you get the best value out of your card. Remember that the cards work on hours and not calendar days so if you fill in your card at 14.00 on the 5th of the month it will be valid until 13.59 on the 6th it will not end at midnight on the 5th.

While you will receive a booklet and map along with your card, we found the best option was to download the Copenhagen Card App to use in conjunction with your card to help you plan you visit.

How to use the Copenhagen Card to visit attractions

Once dated, your card is good to go but you will need to hand it over at most attractions. Ticket desks will scan your card and generally issue you with an attraction ticket for entry.

Copenhagen Zoo where we visited using our Copenhagen Card

Things NOT to do include trying to gain entry without an attraction specific ticket or trying to scan your card QR code on an entrance barrier. These are not chip-embedded cards and cannot be read by every venue so make sure to head to a ticket desk or reception before heading into your chosen activity. We saw a few people utterly confused why they couldn’t get through turnstiles – save the awkward interaction with a security guard and just ask first.

Another common mistake made with the Copenhagen Card is entering the wrong queue. Sadly, the Copenhagen Card is not a queue skip or fast track ticket so don’t enter these queues. During peak season there may be a dedicated line for card holders so look out for signs  at the entrance or listen for stewards and staff instructing where you should go.

How to use the Copenhagen Card on public transport

Using the Bus with the Copenhagen Card

This one had us a little confused at first and took three different staff members for us to understand how to use our cards but lucky for you we can share this knowledge. We watched locals and visitors alike purchase tickets for the trains and metros at the airport and then even more swipe cards on terminals on the platforms which thoroughly confused us. The last thing we wanted to do was end up as fair dodgers because we had simply misunderstood but it turns out you, mainly, do nothing.

Yep, unlike attractions you do NOT need to receive a ticket from an outlet to travel on the public transport. While commuters may swipe cards before getting on the trains or at the front of a bus you do not need to do this with your Copenhagen Card. Keep your card handy on trains or metro lines and if a ticket inspector asks simply show them the card. On buses show your card to the driver when you get on and you’re sorted. Unfortunately, we did not get a public transport ferry during out stay in Copenhagen but I can only assume this would be the same process where you will simply show the card to a staff member if requested.

Is a Copenhagen Card worth it?

For our three day stay in Copenhagen ? – absolutely YES . And here’s a couple of reasons why….

The ease of having the card was a big bonus for us. If you’re a nervous traveller or simply not a fan of interactions this card is great for not having to deal with multiple systems and payments.  It also instantly identifies you as a tourist which can often make people more friendly towards you and offer help.

Frederiksborg Slot in Hillerod is included in the Copenhagen Card

The inclusion of all public transport in the Greater Copenhagen area makes the card fantastic value for anyone planning trips out to any of the less central attractions. Similarly, if you’re not up for a lot of walking or, like us, just want to pack as much into a short space of time then unlimited public transport really helps you squeeze more into a day. The ability to pick up your card on arrival at the airport and the addition of airport transport, which is not typically included in such cards, means you are saving from arrival to departure too! As we travelled during the winter months the freedom and flexibility to jump on public transport rather than walk in the cold, wet weather was also a fantastic option.

And of course the big one, in terms of cost we saved around £210 | €236 | 1758 DKK  by using the Copenhagen Card! That is a massive chunk of money and we certainly wouldn’t have departed with that much on our short visit. One of the great things about the Copenhagen Card website is that you can favourite all the attractions you plan to visit and how long your visit is and it will let you know how much you could save before you buy. This way you can see before you even purchase if this is the card for you.

Hans Christian Anderson Museum

With lots of family friendly attractions including the zoo, aquarium and local science centre we think these card would be a pretty good option for family excursions as well. As children under the age of nine can use a parent’s, this card seems excellent value for family groups.

Another plus that we found in the terms and conditions is that even if you do manage to lose your card, you can get a free replacement during you stay as long as you purchase direct and not from a third party which certainly adds peace of mind to anyone prone to setting things down and wandering away!

Any down sides to the Copenhagen Card?

Like all tourist destinations, opening hours will vary between peak and off-peak seasons and so while there are many attractions included in the cards, you will need to double check if your planned attractions will be open during your stay. Many places will have reduced opening hours in winter and so you’ll need some extra research time to figure out how much you can fit in and if the card is worth it for you. Lots of attractions are also closed on Sundays and Mondays so this is something to take into account both when planning your trip but also for how many days to buy Copenhagen Card for. That said, our visit was in winter and included a Monday and while we needed a little more planning to compensate for lots of attractions that were only open 11 am – 3 pm and shut on Mondays but we still managed to visit 9 attractions in three days so it was still worth it for us.

While included in our Copenhagen Card, we only experienced the outside of Amalienborg Palace as we visited on a Monday

Another thing to watch out for is specifics of what is included. One of the questions that kept cropping up when we were doing our research was “Is Tivoli included in the Copenhagen Card?”. This is because Tivoli is one of the big attractions advertised on the card but the card overs only the entrance to the amusement park and not the rides. Many people feel a little put out by this but there are lots of attractions to the park itself and so lots of visitors do enjoy exploring the gardens. If you do wish to go on the roller coasters and other rides you need to pay for them separately or purchase an unlimited day ticket direct from Tivoli Amusement Park.  As mentioned before, the card is not a fast track ticket.

One downside that others have noted on forum sites such as TripAdvisor is that while the Copenhagen Canal Tour is included in the card, Hop-On-Hop-Off Tour busses are not. While this would certainly help get more direct transport to the must-see sites of Copenhagen, we found the public transport options were generally pretty good and where we had to walk a little, this gave us more of a chance to see the pretty streets of the city.

Cycling in Copenhagen, Denmark

One of the big things to do in Copenhagen is hire a bike and cycle from place to place as the locals do. There are a plethora of bicycle hire places and a lot of accommodation options have their own facilities too. If you’re planning on getting around by bike it might be worth calculating the cost of bike hire and individual attractions yourself as the card may not be for you if you’re not going to use the unlimited transport.

Would we recommend the Copenhagen Card?

100%. Even considering some of the downsides, we found the card completely worth it and would certainly look into using it again on a return visit to see the attractions that we missed out on the first time.

It also looks like the tourist board are currently considering plans to extend the card to cover the whole of the Zealand area and possibly include an option for travel to Malmo, Sweden which would be an exciting addition should it come into play. At present cards will only cover the Greater Copenhagen area.

Have you ever used a tourist card to explore a city? Did you find it worth the cost?

We bought our Copenhagen Cards out of our own pockets but would highly recommend them to any traveller heading to Copenhagen .

Pin it for later

Plenty of cities offer some form of tourist pass for visitors but they're not always worth their price. We tried out the Copenhagen Card while visiting the Danish capital. Prices might change.

Copenhagen Card Makes it Affordable for Families with Kids

For each paying adult, you can bring two kids under the age of ten, for free. That means that they can ride all the transportations for free, and get into most attractions for free. So if you are a family wanting to visit Tivoli Gardens, Copenhagen Zoo, and the Aquarium, two adults with the Copenhagen card can bring along four kids for free.

Is It Worth it For You?

In my family, we have me and my husband, an 11-year-old daughter, and a 16-year-old son. We want to do the Canal tour, the round tower, the national museum, and Tivoli Gardens when visiting Copenhagen . We need a 24-hour card, and we will be using public transportation. I used the Copenhagen Card Calculator to figure out if the card is worth it for us.

With the Copenhagen card, I will pay 196 EUR, for the four of us. If we don’t get the card we will have to pay 257 EUR for the same experiences. The card saves me 61 EUR, in this case.

How much will you save using the card? Check out the price calculator on their website:

How Do I Get My Card?

You have now figured out that the card will save you money, and it’s a good option for you. How do you get one? There are two versions of the city card, a physical card that you can collect, or a digital card.

If you want the physical card, you take the following steps: 1. Order your card online, can be done here:

2. Receive a voucher by email 3. Take the voucher to Copenhagen, and pick up your card at;

  • Copenhagen Visitor Service or
  • Tivoli Box Office

If you want the digital card on your phone, you take the following steps: 1. When purchasing your card online, chose the digital card option 2. Receive an email with the reference number to redeem the card in the Copenhagen card app 3. Instructions will follow on how to get the Copenhagen card app on iOS or Android

Note: You cannot switch between the two options. If you purchase the physical card, you cannot change it into a digital card.

More Than Savings

Why you want to consider the card, not just because it saves you money. The Copenhagen Card will also;

• Save you time – hop on transportation • Flexibility to use the different transportations • See things that you wouldn’t • See more, and maximize your visit – even if it’s just to spend 1 hour at a museum, it’s worth it, it’s included in the card anyway.

How the Copenhagen Card works

The Copenhagen Card is the official City Card of the Danish capital. It has been available in two versions since 2022: Discover and Hop. Depending on whether you prefer to use public transport or the hop-on hop-off buses free of charge, you can choose one of the two options. Either way, the City Card allows you to visit numerous popular sights, such as Tivoli, Amalienborg Palace and the zoo, free of charge.

With both options, you can take 2 children under the age of 12 with you free of charge per adult. They can use the sights as well as public transport or the hop-on hop-off buses free of charge, depending on the option selected.

You can buy the card online and then use it digitally with the free Copenhagen Card app. It is not necessary to collect the card on site. The card is activated via the app.

Who is the Copenhagen Card suitable for?

The Copenhagen Card is a good choice for travellers who want to spend several days in Copenhagen and explore the city.

Especially if you also want to use local public transport or the city's hop-on hop-off buses. In addition to saving money, you don't have to worry about public transport fares or can relax and discover the city on a hop-on hop-off bus without having to worry about planning and logistics.

The Copenhagen Card is also a great offer for families, as up to 2 children up to the age of 12 can travel free of charge per adult.

What does the Copenhagen Card cost?

The prices for the City Card depend on its validity.

The price applies to people aged 16 and over. Each adult can take 2 children up to the age of 12 free of charge. A reduced price applies for young people between the ages of 12 and 15.

The Copenhagen Card Discover does not entitle you to free travel on the hop-on hop-off bus. You can use the Copenhagen Card Hop for this.

Hop-on/Hop-off with the Copenhagen Card Hop

If you prefer to use the Strømma hop-on hop-off buses free of charge, then opt for the Copenhagen Card Hop.

In Copenhagen, the hop-on hop-off buses run on three routes:

  • Classic Route
  • Urban Route
  • Colorful Copenhagen

The Classic Route operates all year round. A seasonal timetable applies on the other two routes.

All buses have a multilingual audio guide so that you can get interesting information about the city and its sights during the journey. You can find more information about hop-on hop-off buses in Copenhagen here: Hop-on/Hop-off Copenhagen

The Copenhagen Card Hop only entitles you to travel with the provider Strømma. There are other providers of hop-on hop-off tours in Copenhagen, but you cannot use them free of charge with the card.

The use of public transport is also not included.

Is the Copenhagen Card worth it?

With the Copenhagen Card you can use numerous sights and museums free of charge. It offers very good value for money.

For our comparison we use the most popular Copenhagen Card: the Copenhagen Card Discover with a validity of 72 hours. We have also included very popular attractions such as Tivoli Gardens and Copenhagen Zoo in the selected sights.

Is The Copenhagen Card Worth It? 2024 Review

When visiting Copenhagen for the first time you’ll want to see as many of the main attractions as possible.

Is the Copenhagen Card worth it? At first glance, it seems like it could be worth it but might not be.

I spent 3 days in Copenhagen and used the Copenhagen Card throughout my trip, so I feel confident to provide a complete and honest review of the Copenhagen Card.

To summarise this article, yes the Copenhagen Card is worth it.

🚨Save a lot of money with a Copenhagen Card. Buy yours by clicking here .

🇩🇰 When planning a trip to Copenhagen, I recommend using: ✈️ Flights: Skyscanner 🏨 Hotels: Booking.com 💵 Hostels: Hostelworld 🗺 Tours & Activities: Viator and GetYourGuide 🚗 Car Rental: Discover Cars 🚌 Transport: Flixbus 🏥 Travel Insurance: Safetywing 📱 E-SIM: Airalo 💻 VPN: Surfshark

Is The Copenhagen Card Worth It? YES!

From my experience and in my opinion, yes the Copenhagen Card is definitely worth it .

It’s one of those things that depend on how much you use it. You could get less than what you pay for, or you could get more than what you pay for, depending on how much you use it.

As Copenhagen is expensive , I trialled the 48-hour Copenhagen Card to see if I could save money during my trip to Copenhagen. Below is an outline of what I used my Copenhagen Card for.

So over my 48-hour Copenhagen Card, I got 759 DKK worth of attractions. You’ll also notice that I didn’t include public transport on the table, I also took the bus a few times so I got even more value.

For the 48 hours, I paid 665 DKK so I saved just under 100 DKK , which is equivalent to £11.86 / $14.60 / €13.44. As well as saving money, I got to use public transport for free and had the convenience of the Copenhagen Card.

A polar bear at Copenhagen Zoo which I visited as part of my Copenhagen Card.

Another benefit of the Copenhagen Card is it means you don’t have to buy tickets individually, it’s very easy to use and saves a lot of hassle booking things.

One thing I will say is that you have to pack your days with a lot of things to do in order to get your money’s worth. As you can see above, I did quite a lot of things in 48 hours. You can do a lot of things in a short time in Copenhagen, this is why 3 days is enough days in Copenhagen .

But all in all, I would say yes, the Copenhagen Card is worth it. It saves you money and is very convenient.

What Is The Copenhagen Card?

The Copenhagen Card is a tourist pass for visiting Copenhagen. It includes free access to the city’s most popular attractions as well as unlimited free public transport . There are nearly 90 attractions included in the pass. It’s a great way to save money on a trip to Copenhagen.

A picture of a ride in Tivoli Gardens, access to Tivoli is included in the Copenhagen Card. Is the Copenhagen Card worth it? I would say so.

The Copenhagen Card is very convenient and allows all your tickets to be in one place, as you use the same ticket for everything rather than having to book individually. Another huge benefit is that it includes transport to and from Copenhagen Airport.

How Much Is The Copenhagen Card?

The Copenhagen Card prices vary depending on how long you want the card to be active. You can choose between 24, 48, 72, 96 and 120 hours. You can activate your card at any time, and it remains active for the designated amount of time.

There are also different prices for adults (16+), youth (12-15) and child (3-11) passes. Each paying adult is allowed 2 children (3-11) for free and under 3s are allowed everywhere for free. Below is an overview of the prices of the different Copenhagen Cards.

You can easily get more for your money with a Copenhagen Card. Particularly if you opt for one of the longer passes, as the prices increase in smaller amounts the longer you have the pass, and more days mean you can do more things to get your money’s worth.

What Does The Copenhagen Card Include?

The Copenhagen Card includes access to 89 attractions and unlimited free public transport. Most of the attractions that make Copenhagen worth visiting are included.

Some of the most popular attractions included in the Copenhagen Card are:

  • Rosenborg Castle
  • Christiansborg Royal Stables, Ruins, Royal Kitchen and Royal Reception

Of course, there are many more things not listed here. And if you’re wondering, I visited Copenhagen in January and managed to squeeze all of these into a short trip, as they weren’t particularly crowded.

Public transport is included. In Copenhagen, there are 4 forms of public transport:

  • Harbour-bus

Yes, you can take a journey on a harbour bus for free. It’s a pretty unique experience! However, if you opt for walking everywhere, Copenhagen is safe and you won’t have any problems.

Copenhagen Card Tips & Tricks

When using the Copenhagen Card, there are some tips and tricks to getting the most out of the pass.

  • Plan your days: Make sure to plan your days with attractions that are close together and work out how you can do as much as you can in the time of your card.
  • Take advantage of public transport: Make sure to make use of free public transport. The public transport in Copenhagen is regular and reliable so you can use it to go between attractions.
  • Some things are closed on Mondays: Lots of the attractions in Copenhagen are closed on Mondays , make sure to consider this when choosing when to activate your Copenhagen Card. You can still visit Copenhagen Zoo and take a canal tour on Mondays.
  • Be Aware of Tivoli Gardens Seasons: Tivoli Gardens closes at certain points throughout the year. As this is one of the main attractions included in the CC, you may miss out. For example, visiting Copenhagen in January will have Tivoli Gardens closed.
  • Don’t activate your card too early: If you activate your card before you need to, you will be wasting valuable hours which you have paid for. Only activate your card when you reach Copenhagen Airport to get the train to Copenhagen Central Station for free.

Why This Cool Scandinavian City Will Be One Of The Trendiest Destinations In 2024

If a trip to Europe is in the cards for you this year, then take a moment to pause before you press that ‘book' button.

Do you really want to wrestle with the crowds in Barcelona? Fight for beach space in the Algarve? Or are you ready for a different, cooler kind of  European experience ?

Copenhagen could be the answer you seek.

The capital city of  Denmark  has always been a popular choice for travelers, but in 2024, we could see it become one of the trendiest destinations on this historic continent.

Here's why:

King Of Cool

There's no doubt that Copenhagen is one of the coolest cities in Europe, and I'm not just talking about the dress sense of its inhabitants or the range of sleek bars and fine restaurants.

Being in northern Europe, the city enjoys pleasant summers that don't suffer with the baking hot summers of countries such as Greece or Spain.

The average temperatures for July and August are a comfortable 65F, meaning you can enjoy fun in the sun without cooking.

Heading to slightly cooler destinations in the summer is a trend that has been taking off in recent years, so expect places like Copenhagen to become even more popular.

Connection With The U.S. Has Never Been Better

Copenhagen Airport saw an  impressive 27 million passengers  pass through its doors in 2023, which pretty much puts it back on par with pre-pandemic tourism figures.

More interestingly, it seems that American travelers are taking a shine to the Danish capital, with more than one million passengers going between it and the United States last year.

You can fly non-stop to Copenhagen from no fewer than 8 locations in the U.S., including San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington D.C., Boston, Miami, New York (JFK), and Newark – with some flights in the shoulder season as little as $450 for a round trip.

Hidden Gems Are Plentiful

Away from the obvious sights and attractions of Copenhagen, there are some relatively easy-to-find hidden gems that can have you feeling like a local in no time.

Make use of Copenhagen's excellent metro system and take a trip out to Amager Strandpark.

This small but beautiful beach is actually its own tiny island just off the shore, but you can reach it on foot from the Amager Strand metro station.

Here, you'll find great walking and cycling paths, piers for getting out onto the water, and facilities such as cafes and toilets.

Another great coastal attraction to check out is CopenHill, a dry ski slope built onto the top of an energy plant.

It's also great for hiking in summer.

If you're looking for a trendy place to spend an evening, look no further than the Meatpacking District.

This former industrial area is a short walk from the central railway station.

Its former meat processing warehouses have been gentrified into a range of cool bars and stylish restaurants-my personal recommendation is Warpigs Brewpub.

Lots Happening In 2024

If you've had Copenhagen on your bucket list for the last few years but never managed to tick it off, then 2024 might just have the perfect excuse to do so.

From June 27-29, the city will host the annual World Coffee Championships at the Bella Center, where leading specialists from around the world will gather to celebrate all things roasty.

2024 will also be the first year that the new attraction, Home of Carlsberg, is open to the public.

This visitor experience will allow travelers to learn the story of the famous beer brewer that began life in the city all the way back in 1874.

Also new for this year are five new underground stations on Copenhagen's metro, which are set to open, linking the downtown area with cool suburbs such as Sydhavnen.

Underrated Digital Nomad Destination

It certainly won't be the first country that comes to mind, but Denmark is actually a very  underrated place to live as a digital nomad .

Americans can stay for up to 90 days without anything more than a tourist visa, and English is very widely spoken, especially in Copenhagen.

It also scores very  highly on safety , ranking as the second safest country on the 2023 Global Peace Network, while internet connection, infrastructure, and co-working spaces are all of a very high standard too.

The only real downside is that it's not the cheapest place to stay – but if you feel like enjoying some nomad luxury, there are few better places in Europe to do it than Copenhagen.
