Located on South Africa ’s northeast coast, Durban is the largest city in the KwaZulu-Natal province and a favorite destination for travelers in search of sun, sea and surf. Imbued with an irresistible vacation atmosphere, Durban is known for the idyllic beaches of the Golden Mile, its world-class surf spots and active Indian community. The latter is responsible for the city’s reputation as the curry capital of South Africa, making this a fine destination for foodies as well.

Hit the Beach

Durban is famous for its beaches , both in the city center and the suburbs. Grab a good book and a towel and spend the day working on your tan; or kick things up a notch with an early morning kitesurfing session. uShaka Beach is famous for its sandcastle artists, who create photo-worthy masterpieces for passing tourists. Northern Umdloti Beach is a good bet for families in search of safe swimming; or nature-lovers hoping to catch sight of migrating humpback whales in winter. North Beach is a bodyboarding hotspot. Durban is also convenient for exploring the more secluded beaches of the South Coast. 

At almost any time of day or night, you’ll see surfers of all abilities paddling out to backline on Durban’s beaches. This is one of South Africa’s top surf spots - whether you’re a complete beginner or a seasoned pro. For entry-level waves, head to uShaka Beach and Vetch’s Pier. For the more experienced, the best waves are found north of the Golden Mile at North Beach, Bay of Plenty and Dairy Beach. South of the city center, top surf spots include Ansteys Beach and Cove Rock. Be respectful of other surfers and wait your turn, though - Durban locals are notoriously intolerant of visitors dropping in on their waves.

Learn to Scuba Dive

If you’d rather be under the waves than on them, pay a visit to Calypso Dive & Adventure Centre  on the beachfront. Here, a team of PADI professionals offer try dives at uShaka aquarium or in the ocean as well as full beginner courses. If you’re already certified, continue your education with an Advanced Open Water, Rescue Diver or specialty course. Calypso is also known for its tec diving and professional courses. Nearby dive sites include reefs teeming with aquatic life and a number of interesting shipwrecks. The most notable of these is Coopers, a large wreck of unknown origins named after a nearby lighthouse.

Catch a Sharks Game

You can’t spend time in KwaZulu-Natal without seeing the symbol of a shark wearing a black-and-white rugby strip. This is Sharkie, the official mascot of the Sharks rugby union team . Based in Durban, the Sharks represent KwaZulu-Natal in the annual Currie Cup tournament. Their supporters are devoted, and matches are attended by locals from all walks of life. Get tickets to a game at Kings Park Stadium, the Sharks’ home ground, to experience their passion for yourself. Several iconic Springbok players have played for the Sharks either now or in the past, including JP Pietersen, Tendai ‘Beast’ Mtawarira and Patrick Lambie.

Try a Bunny Chow

In the 1800s, British colonialists bought thousands of migrant workers over from India to work on  KwaZulu-Natal’s sugarcane plantations. Many chose to build a home in South Africa, and their descendants still live in Durban today. In fact, the city’s Indian community is so large that Durban is known throughout the country for its curry restaurants . A unique trademark of Indian food in South Africa is the bunny chow, a half loaf of bread that has been hollowed out and filled with curry. Explore the Moses Mabhida Stadium

An icon of the Durban waterfront, Moses Mabhida Stadium is the city’s main venue for athletic and music events. Mounted 262 feet/80 meters above the ground on the stadium’s graceful arch, the swing is the tallest in the world. Indulge in Retail Therapy

Durban is a dream destination for shopaholics , whether you’re looking for authentic craft markets, sprawling malls or upmarket boutiques. Take care of your souvenir shopping at Amphitheatre Flea Market, held every Sunday on the Golden Mile beachfront. Here you’ll find traditional African arts and crafts, ranging from beaded jewelry to wooden sculptures. Of Durban’s many malls, Gateway Theatre of Shopping is probably the most rewarding, with over 400 stores. If your tastes lean more towards boutique art and fashion, plan a day trip to the Valley of a Thousand Hills, an inland region littered with upmarket shopping streets and markets. 

Visit uShaka Marine World

Located at the southern end of Durban’s Golden Mile, uShaka Marine World is the city’s top-rated tourist attraction. The vast complex incorporates several different zones, including a reptile house, a rope adventure park and the Village Walk, an open-air shopping and dining destination. The two main attractions, however, are the aquarium and the water park. The former gives you the opportunity to admire South Africa’s diverse marine life up close - including ragged-tooth sharks, African penguins and green turtles. The water park is the ideal choice for a fun family day out, with water slides, splash pools and supertubes. 

Have Dinner Overlooking the Bay

Durban is full of excellent restaurants and bars, but if you’re looking for the ultimate romantic date night destination, pick one that overlooks the vast expanse of Durban Bay. Moyo and the Cargo Hold are both sure to impress. Located at the end of uShaka Pier, Moyo offers panoramic views of the glittering nighttime waterfront. Sip craft cocktails while dining on African-inspired cuisine, accompanied by soft music and the sound of the surf crashing against the pier below. Go Swimming With Sharks

For an even closer shark encounter, consider taking a 40-minute drive south of Durban to the tiny coastal town of Umkomaas. Umkomaas is the gateway to Aliwal Shoal, an offshore reef system known as one of the best places in the world to dive with sharks . Several scuba diving centers offer baited shark dives, using chum to attract oceanic blacktip sharks, bull sharks and tiger sharks (in season). Sightings are almost guaranteed, and if you don’t have your scuba license, don’t worry - operators like Aliwal Shoal Scuba offer shark snorkeling and even shark cage diving for those that require a little extra peace of mind.

The typical tourist visiting South Africa has an itinerary that looks something like this: Fly into Johannesburg, head to Kruger for a safari, and then head to Cape Town for some wining and dining. While that’s got the makings of a fantastic trip, it does mean most visitors miss out on Durban, the third-largest city in the country. Often overlooked in favor of Cape Town or Johannesburg, Durban is quite possibly South Africa’s best-kept city secret.

Joburg may be trendy and Cape Town may be glamorous, but Durban is cool. Best known for its beaches and Afro-Indian culture, Durban has plenty to see and do. An hour by plane from Johannesburg and 2 hours from Cape Town, Durban is a great place to visit year-round thanks to its fantastic weather. So, if you are planning a trip to South Africa, make sure to add Durban to your itinerary.

Let’s delve a little deeper into Durban and discover some of the best things to see and do.

1. The Golden Mile

Probably the best place to start is the Golden Mile, which takes its name from a series of golden sandy beaches that stretch for 3.7 miles along the edge of the city’s business district. The paved promenade is the perfect place to walk, run, cycle, skateboard, or do a segway tour. The sandy beaches are a massive playground; take a dip in the blue Indian Ocean, stroll along the beach, try your hand at a sandcastle, or relax and work on that tan. This is probably the safest surfing spot in South Africa; hundreds of surfers take to the water here every day and there are shark nets and lifeguards year-round. Even if you’re not a surfer, this is a great place to watch the action.

Too hot for a stroll? Then “take the back seat” in a Zulu rickshaw. A century ago, more than 2,000 of them crowded Durban’s streets and docks. Now, only about 20 registered pullers remain, all wearing beaded headdresses and pulling similarly decorated rides.

The Golden Mile is also home to uShaka Marine World and Moses Mabhida Stadium (more about them below). You can take care of any souvenir shopping at the Amphitheatre Flea Market, held every Sunday at the beachfront.

2. uShaka Marine World

At one end of the Golden Mile is The Point, overlooking the mouth of Durban’s harbor. Once infamous for its gangsters and dockside prostitutes, The Point is now home to high-end condos. The main attraction here is uShaka Marine World — a water park, the largest aquarium in the country, and one of the most popular attractions in Durban. The highlight of a uShaka visit is the Ocean Walk experience, when you get to walk across the bottom of the Open Ocean Exhibit and observe all sorts of marine life, including several species of shark, tons of sardines, and rays. You can actually do more than just watch; uShaka also offers several snorkeling and scuba-diving activities. And if you fancy a bite, book a table at The Cargo Hold and you’ll be dining underwater!

3. Moses Mabhida Stadium

At the other end of the Golden Mile is the city’s sports complex, dominated by the Moses Mabhida Stadium built for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The stadium is now used for a number of events, including concerts, cricket, football, golf practice, motorsports, and rugby games. If there’s no match on, it’s worth climbing the 500 steps, or riding the Sky Car to the top of the arch that stretches over the field, giving you unrivaled 360-degree views out over the coast and the city. Looking for an adrenaline high? Jump into the void 347 feet above the pitch and swing out in a huge 720-foot arc under the iconic arch; this is the world’s highest rope swing. It’s also the only stadium swing in the world and is even open for children under 18 (as long as they weigh over 90 pounds), should you have an adventurous teenager in tow.

4. Durban Botanic Gardens

The oldest surviving botanical gardens in Africa, founded in 1849, the Durban Botanic Gardens provides a captivating insight into the flora of the region. The property also has some captivating smaller gardens, like the breathtaking Orchid House, the award-winning Sensory Garden, the tea garden, and the herbarium. There’s an impressive collection of living fossil plants — pre-dinosaur cycads — known to have existed for more than 250 million years and now at risk of extinction. The gardens are also home to more than 50 species of resident birds. The gardens regularly host musical concerts, exhibitions, and an indigenous plant fair every September. Entry to the gardens is free and paid guided tours are available.

5. KwaMuhle Museum

The KwaMuhle Museum documents Durban’s urban growth as well as celebrating the efforts of those who fought to end apartheid. It’s a great place to learn more about the history of the city. The museum is housed in the former Native Affairs Department building, an infamous place responsible for enforcing apartheid legislation. Exhibits include photographs, documents, and video testimonials of township life, black migration, the apartheid years, and the contributions made by people responsible for the city’s development. It is one of four museums in Durban that tells the story of the city’s past. The other three are the Old House Museum, the Port Natal Maritime Museum, and the Old Court House Museum.

6. Florida Road

Florida Road used to be an elephant trail to the marsh that is now Durban’s Greyville Racecourse. Known for its well-preserved, 100-year-old Victorian and Edwardian buildings, today, this is one of Durban’s trendiest areas. Lined with cafés, cocktail bars, designer boutique stores, galleries, and eateries, the street comes alive after the sunset with locals and tourists who come to eat, shop, and enjoy Durban’s endless summer. Art lovers can enjoy the African Art Centre , Elizabeth Gordon Gallery , and the Artisan Contemporary Gallery. This is also one of the best places in the city to taste “bunny chow,” a staple Indian-Durban dish made from a loaf of bread that’s hollowed out and filled with curry.

7. Muthi Market

The muthi (traditional Zulu medicine) market in central Durban is an outdoor network of stalls stocked with everything from herbs to animal carcasses. Inyanga (traditional healers) offer lotions, potions, medicines, and other treatments for various ailments. You can purchase “ingredients” like snake skins, crocodile teeth, plants, bird claws, powders, talismans, and more. This tour is definitely not for everyone — the carcasses can be gory and the smells pungent — but it’s an interesting way to learn about Zulu culture and the world of traditional African healing. It’s best to go with a guide, as many vendors are not fluent in English. Street Scene is one tour company that offers visits here.

8. Indian Quarter

Durban has a large Indian community and lots of Indian heritage. It goes without saying that one of the best things to do in Durban is explore its Indian Quarter. Encompassing Victoria Street Market and Juma Masjid Mosque (the largest in the southern hemisphere), Durban’s Indian Quarter is a multicultural mix of sights, sounds, and exotic aromas. Indian, Pakistani, Chinese, and Somali vendors haggle along the narrow pavements, selling spices, saris, incense, intricate handmade jewelry, embroidered fabrics, beaded sandals, and more. Savvy shoppers will get some bargains here and the restaurants boast some of the most authentic Indian cuisine in Durban — make sure to sample the tasty street food.

9. Inanda Township And Heritage Trail

About 20 minutes northwest of Durban is the Inanda Valley, a densely populated semi-rural settlement that played a large role in shaping the history of South Africa. This is where Mahatma Gandhi came up with his passive-resistance philosophy in 1904. It’s also where one of South Africa’s oldest girls’ schools — the Inanda Seminary — was founded by American missionaries in 1869. President of the African National Congress, Dr. John Dube, was born here in 1871 and Nelson Mandela cast his vote here in South Africa’s first democratic elections in 1994. If you are not self-driving, join a tour like the one offered by African Angel .

10. Umhlanga Rocks

Ten miles north of Durban is Umhlanga Rocks (pronounced Umshlanga), a popular, upscale resort town where water sports enthusiasts will find plenty of things to do. Surfing, deep-sea fishing, whale watching, dolphin viewing, scuba diving, and kiteboarding are just some of the activities on offer.

There are long golden beaches and a terrific promenade for runs and walks. The Umhlanga Pier has been called one of the most beautiful in the world, with “whale bones” forming a ribcage over the walkway, colorful mosaics, grates where you can watch the water underfoot, and a lovely viewing platform at the end. One of the nicest sights in the area, particularly at sunset, is the lighthouse, which you can spot on a walk along the beach or from the terrace at the Oyster Box Hotel — one of South Africa’s best spots for a sundowner. The Oyster Box is also renowned for its curry buffet, where you can choose from at least 11 curries, including the traditional Durban lamb curry and red-hot beef vindaloo, as well as naans and homemade chutneys.

Thanks to safety nets, shark attacks at Durban’s beaches are rare. The KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board maintains the nets that protect the city’s beaches and, while you are in Umhlanga, it’s possible to book an early morning boat ride with the crew that maintains them. It’s rare to see a shark around the nets, but for those that really want a Jaws moment in their lives, there are public shark dissections at the Board’s visitor center.

Surfing is also one of the more popular things to do in Durban. Long beaches lapped by the warm Indian Ocean, a mild subtropical climate, and excellent infrastructure lure tourists by the millions.

Located in the province of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), this vibrant city can be reached by air within an hour from Johannesburg and two hours from Cape Town.

Experience Durban's rich multi-cultural heritage in the Zulu and Indian markets and culturally significant attractions, walk the beautifully manicured parks along the water, and taste delicious Indian-influenced cuisine.

A good starting point for a walking tour of Durban is the "Golden Mile." This bustling beachfront promenade is lined with high-rise hotels, entertainment complexes, shops, and restaurants. The broad, golden beaches are a magnet for water sports enthusiasts who come here to surf, swim, fish, or just bask in the sunshine. Lifeguards and shark nets protect most of the beaches year-round.

Along the busy oceanfront path, pedestrians jostle with joggers, cyclists, Segways, and skateboarders, making the area feel a little like California. Other highlights along this coastal stretch include uShaka Marine World ; Moses Mabhida Stadium ; and Mini Town , a pint-sized replica of Durban, complete with a miniature rail network, airport, and harbor scene.

The Durban Botanic Gardens is the oldest surviving botanic garden in Africa. Set on the slopes of Berea Hill, northwest of the city center, the gardens were established in 1849 for the trial of agricultural crops. Today, visitors can stroll among the indigenous and exotic subtropical plantings, including majestic heritage trees, some of which are more than one hundred years old.

The main plant collections include cycads, orchids, bromeliads, and palms, and visitors can also experience the Garden of the Senses. In addition to the rich plant biodiversity, at least fifty different species of birds are permanent residents of the gardens.

In the Riverside district, on the north bank of the Umgeni River, Umgeni River Bird Park features more than 200 species of birds, and some are the only representatives of their kind in Africa.

On a network of paths running through lush landscaping and waterfalls, visitors can observe a variety of indigenous species, as well as birds from Southeast Asia and Australia, including lories, cockatoos, and aras.

One of the highlights of the park is the bird show, where visitors can learn more about the exotic species as they perform.

uShaka Marine World, one of the main attractions on Durban's Golden Mile, is a water-themed wonderland packed with attractions. Other attractions here include a Dolphin Stadium, Seal Stadium, and Penguin Rookery. Moses Mabhida Stadium is a world-class sporting and event venue on Durban's Golden Mile . The stadium hosted eight of the FIFA World Cup Games in 2010. Besides admiring the lavish architecture, a highlight of a visit here is enjoying a meal at the vegetarian restaurant, Govinda's . And ranked higher by Mercer in its annual Quality of Living survey than both Cape Town and Johannesburg , for yet another year, South Africa’s east coast city has taken its rightful place as one of the best cities in the country to visit.

The laid-back lifestyle

When it comes to the laid-back stakes of coastal cities in South Africa, Durban wins hands down.

Slops and shorts are standard apparel, all year round – even the winters in Durban produce balmy days that easily give Mozambique and European summers a run for their money (in fact, they’re better, even, than the city’s sticky summers).

Durban has been likened to the Mediterranean for its beach-bum vibe and relaxed atmosphere.

Beaches all year round

Attributable to the glorious weather Durban experiences all year, its beaches are as swimmable in winter as summer and warm – unlike its sister city, Cape Town.

Durban’s Golden Mile (the beach front strip that lights up at night that is arguably Durban’s greatest icon) is a surfer’s idea of utopia, whilst beaches north of Durban, although wilder, attract as much attention.

Unpretentious and multi-cultural, depending on where you go, Durban’s people are as varied as they are, almost without exception, friendly.

If you want vibey and culturally mixed head to the harbour or down town Durban; to Chatsworth or Tongaat for Indian curries, or to Umlazi or KwaMashu for house music and braaied meat.

Durban has fast caught up with its more worldly cousins – Johannesburg and Cape Town – when it comes to food and coffee.

Station Drive Precinct is the newest kid on the block, transforming a former light industrial, no-go area into a contemporary gathering of restaurants, breweries and designers.

Leafy Glenwood, in the shadow of the city’s university, plays host to its own selection of cool eating spots.

Morningside lies on the hill above Durban’s city centre, its Florida Road a well established restaurant, coffee shop and pub mecca.

Rivertown District is Durban’s answer to Maboneng in Johannesburg , an inner-city revival that has its own night food and craft market (Smarket).

The historical tours

Head down to the Durban Green Hub at the Blue Lagoon for a variety of tours of Durban – Woza Inanda offers trips on its Inanda Heritage Route – walking trails and guided routes that explore Gandhi’s life, the Ohlange Institute, and the Shembe Settlement amongst other places.

Durban’s inner-city street market, on Bertha Mkhize Street, is a predominantly Indian spice and flea market with a big north African influence in the form of curios, art and jewellery.

The walking tours

The sardine run

The Cape boasts whales, Durban has the sardine run – an almost-annual May / June migration of huge shoals of silver sardines from the cold oceans of the country’s Cape up along the coastline to Durban.

Described as a ‘feeding frenzy’ for thousands of birds and larger fish who gamely feed on the more often than not 7 km long, 1.5 km wide and 30 metres deep phenomenon, it is a spectacle that travels the length of the coastline.

The Drakensberg

On Durban’s doorstep is one of KwaZulu-Natal’s two World Heritage Sites – the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg .

Aside from its sheer beauty, and impressive mountain peaks that stretch for well over 200 kilometres, what makes it so popular is its accessible plateau and the slopes and mountains that provide some of the best and most strenuous hiking in the country.

For unspoilt outdoor wilderness you would be hard-pressed to beat the Drakensberg .

The Moses Mabhida Stadium , Durban’s 2010 World Soccer Cup legacy, is anything but a static white elephant. Quite the opposite.

You can journey your way across the stadium’s arch on the SkyCar to a platform that gives you gobsmacking views over Durban.

The single cabin runs on steel tracks that, on the return journey, rolls under its own gravity.

People’s Park

Just below the stadium is People’s Park which, if you have children, you simply have to visit.

It includes a track and field area, a fantastic kids’ play gound and a café (where you can sip on coffee whilst watching your kids play). At night the park often hosts music festivals and shows.

Outdoor Living

Long overlooked for Cape Town and Johannesburg, Durban, South Africa’s best-kept secret, is slowly emerging as a promising destination for travelers. Known for its beaches and Afro-Indian culture, Durban offers plenty of beautiful attractions. Three days is just enough time to experience the diversity this city has to offer, but you can absolutely make any changes you like, to adapt the tour to your preferences. Our 3-day suggested itinerary will give you a real taste of this charming city and you will be introduced to its best attractions.

Things to consider before traveling to Durban, South Africa:

Health – South Africa has several world-class private hospitals and medical centres providing specialist services by highly skilled professionals. Though in rural area, hospitals deal with primary health care and limited range of health care, trained medical professionals are deployed around the country. Getting a comprehensive travel insurance before departure is recommended as medical costs can be quite expensive. Exercise safety precautions if engaging in any sexual activities as South Africa has the highest incidence of HIV/AIDS infection.

Food and water safety – Hygiene standards in relation to food safety is generally high in most restaurants, hotels and clubs. It is safe to eat vegetables, fresh fruits and salads. Chicken, meat and fish are of excellent quality thus you can enjoy South Africa’s local cuisine. Do not carry debit or credit cards with you, or hide it in your bra or shoes. There were incidences of robbery when offenders will escort you to an ATM and make you take out as much as you can. If you are staying in a hotel, leave your passport and other valuables in the safety deposit box in the reception. Just carry a photocopy of your passport. If you are renting out a car, always keep the car locked and don’t leave valuables. Do not stop for any hitch hiker or person in trouble on the open road.

Getting around – Durban is the third largest city in South Africa, so getting around is pretty simple and easy. The city features an excellent public transport network consisting of trains, taxis, public buses, tourist buses, rickshaws and rental cars. The city is also is bicycle friendly and can also be easily explored by foot. Another reliable option when getting around is by Uber.

Day 1: Durban Harbor

Today is spent learning all about Durban Harbor. Travel to your chosen accommodation where you will be staying for two nights. Get settled and spend the morning in your hotel to recover from jet lag. If you are stressed out, or simply needing a place where you can recharge and enjoy some downtime, then laze around Golden Mile , the crescent-shaped stretch of golden beaches. You may also get a panoramic view of the city at Moses Mabhida Stadium   located at the other end of the Golden Mile.

In the afternoon, explore the many attractions in the harbor such as  uShaka Marine World , uShaka Sea World Aquarium and Durban Botanic Gardens . If you have extra bucks to splurge, get a bird’s eye helicopter view of Durban. After a full day exploring, enjoy dinner at one of the restaurants with a view of the harbor. Do not miss to enjoy some seafood platters at the Cargo Hold and Moyo in uShaka Marine World.

Day 2: Durban Central

On your second day, leave before dawn and wait for the sun of the new day to appear over the Indian Ocean at the North Beach , which is still part of the Golden Mile. Waiting for the sunrise is probably one of the most fascinating experiences you could get in Durban. Then, it’s time to hit the sun and bask in the laid-back lagoon-type swimming area of the Umdloti Beach . Day 3: Msinsi Nature Reserve

Wrapped around a sheltered bay, Durban is a gateway to South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal and Drakensberg regions, but also a destination in its own right. Its multicultural population is bolstered by Zulus and the largest concentration of Indian descendants outside India, which is reflected in the city’s food and culture.

Tour the streets with a guide and you can sample Afro-Indian delicacies such as bunny chow (hollowed-out bread filled with curry), uncover a little of the city’s apartheid history and visit some of the contemporary galleries that have sprung up in the up-and-coming Glenwood district. And, down by the water, watch surfers tackling the waves from the city’s gold-sand beaches.

In its historic core, grand colonial villas with Victorian lacework balconies rub alongside Art Deco buildings and a wide range of restaurants, cafés and bars.

Contrast this with a stroll along the waterfront boardwalk, which is reminiscent of California, complete with surfers and street performers. You can also spend time on the long sweeps of golden sand, lapped by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean.

To make the most of your time in Durban, we recommend spending a day touring the city with a local guide who can help unravel its past and present.

You begin with a visit to Africa’s oldest surviving botanical garden, which was established in 1849. Many of the plant species here are endemic to the country. Some, such as cycads and palms, have adapted to the tropical climate this part of South Africa experiences. You can visit the orchid house, wander around the spring-fed lake and see jacaranda trees that have been growing since the late-19th century.

Then, you’ll head to Glenwood, a district that has become a popular haunt of young artists. Walls are ablaze with punchy street art, and works still fresh from the easel hang in small contemporary galleries. You might get a chance to meet some of the people behind these pieces and ask them about what inspired them.

You might try bunny chow, samosas or Bombay crush — a milkshake-style drink made with rose syrup, milk, tukmaria (basil) seeds and vanilla ice cream.

Seafood also plays a big part in the city’s food scene, particularly during the annual sardine migration that passes along its shores in June or July.

In the afternoon, you’ll hear about the impacts of apartheid on the city’s residents at the Kwa Muhle Museum. Nelson Mandela cast his first vote in Durban in 1994 in the country’s first all-race elections, and just an hour and a half outside the city you can visit the site where he was arrested.

As part of your tour, you can also visit the Moses Mabhida Stadium, which hosted the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The SkyCar ride takes you up the stadium arch to a 106 m (348 ft) high viewpoint overlooking the city and ocean.

Africa's Travel Indaba 2024 to be held in South Africa's Durban

JOHANNESBURG, April 23 (Xinhua) -- South Africa is expected to see some economic boost next month as the Africa Travel Indaba 2024 is set to be held in the coastal city of Durban, a government official said on Tuesday.

Deputy Minister of Tourism Fish Mahlalela said at a media launch that this year's Africa Travel Indaba will be held in Durban on May 13-16. The event has confirmed 990 exhibitors from 26 African countries.

A post-event survey revealed that Africa's Travel Indaba 2023 had a total economic contribution of 1.2 billion South African rand (about 63 million U.S. dollars), which included a direct contribution of more than 400 million rand to the South African economy, said Mahlalela.

Despite the subdued economic environment, the country is optimistic that the 2024 edition will match or exceed these figures and help create more job opportunities, he said.

Africa's Travel Indaba is an iconic African leisure trade show, owned by South African Tourism, with the specific objective of creating market access for the vast array of African leisure tourism products.

"Indaba" comes from the Zulu language, widely spoken in South Africa, and means a meeting to discuss a serious topic.
