Located on South Africa ’s northeast coast, Durban is the largest city in the KwaZulu-Natal province and a favorite destination for travelers in search of sun, sea and surf. Imbued with an irresistible vacation atmosphere, Durban is known for the idyllic beaches of the Golden Mile, its world-class surf spots and active Indian community. The latter is responsible for the city’s reputation as the curry capital of South Africa, making this a fine destination for foodies as well.

Hit the Beach

Durban is famous for its beaches , both in the city center and the suburbs. Grab a good book and a towel and spend the day working on your tan; or kick things up a notch with an early morning kitesurfing session. uShaka Beach is famous for its sandcastle artists, who create photo-worthy masterpieces for passing tourists. Northern Umdloti Beach is a good bet for families in search of safe swimming; or nature-lovers hoping to catch sight of migrating humpback whales in winter. North Beach is a bodyboarding hotspot. Durban is also convenient for exploring the more secluded beaches of the South Coast.

At almost any time of day or night, you’ll see surfers of all abilities paddling out to backline on Durban’s beaches. This is one of South Africa’s top surf spots - whether you’re a complete beginner or a seasoned pro. For entry-level waves, head to uShaka Beach and Vetch’s Pier. For the more experienced, the best waves are found north of the Golden Mile at North Beach, Bay of Plenty and Dairy Beach. South of the city center, top surf spots include Ansteys Beach and Cove Rock. Be respectful of other surfers and wait your turn, though - Durban locals are notoriously intolerant of visitors dropping in on their waves.

Learn to Scuba Dive

If you’d rather be under the waves than on them, pay a visit to Calypso Dive & Adventure Centre  on the beachfront. Here, a team of PADI professionals offer try dives at uShaka aquarium or in the ocean as well as full beginner courses. If you’re already certified, continue your education with an Advanced Open Water, Rescue Diver or specialty course. Calypso is also known for its tec diving and professional courses. Nearby dive sites include reefs teeming with aquatic life and a number of interesting shipwrecks. The most notable of these is Coopers, a large wreck of unknown origins named after a nearby lighthouse.

Catch a Sharks Game

You can’t spend time in KwaZulu-Natal without seeing the symbol of a shark wearing a black-and-white rugby strip. This is Sharkie, the official mascot of the Sharks rugby union team . Based in Durban, the Sharks represent KwaZulu-Natal in the annual Currie Cup tournament. Their supporters are devoted, and matches are attended by locals from all walks of life. Get tickets to a game at Kings Park Stadium, the Sharks’ home ground, to experience their passion for yourself. Several iconic Springbok players have played for the Sharks either now or in the past, including JP Pietersen, Tendai ‘Beast’ Mtawarira and Patrick Lambie.

Try a Bunny Chow

In the 1800s, British colonialists bought thousands of migrant workers over from India to work on  KwaZulu-Natal’s sugarcane plantations. Many chose to build a home in South Africa, and their descendants still live in Durban today. In fact, the city’s Indian community is so large that Durban is known throughout the country for its curry restaurants . A unique trademark of Indian food in South Africa is the bunny chow, a half loaf of bread that has been hollowed out and filled with curry. You can order bunny chows at countless eateries throughout the city, from top-rated restaurant Mali’s to favorite hole-in-the-wall spot Sunrise Chip n’ Ranch.

Explore the Moses Mabhida Stadium

An icon of the Durban waterfront, Moses Mabhida Stadium is the city’s main venue for athletic and music events. It’s also a thrill-seeker’s paradise offering several adrenalin-fuelled activities - including the Big Rush swing. Mounted 262 feet/80 meters above the ground on the stadium’s graceful arch, the swing is the tallest in the world. You can also climb the arch, admiring magnificent panoramic views of the coast and the city spread out below en route; or you can skip the workout and ride the SkyCar to the top instead. Moses Mabhida also offers stadium tours, either on foot or by Segway.

Indulge in Retail Therapy

Durban is a dream destination for shopaholics , whether you’re looking for authentic craft markets, sprawling malls or upmarket boutiques. Take care of your souvenir shopping at Amphitheatre Flea Market, held every Sunday on the Golden Mile beachfront. Here you’ll find traditional African arts and crafts, ranging from beaded jewelry to wooden sculptures. Of Durban’s many malls, Gateway Theatre of Shopping is probably the most rewarding, with over 400 stores. If your tastes lean more towards boutique art and fashion, plan a day trip to the Valley of a Thousand Hills, an inland region littered with upmarket shopping streets and markets.

Visit uShaka Marine World

Located at the southern end of Durban’s Golden Mile, uShaka Marine World is the city’s top-rated tourist attraction. The vast complex incorporates several different zones, including a reptile house, a rope adventure park and the Village Walk, an open-air shopping and dining destination. The two main attractions, however, are the aquarium and the water park. The former gives you the opportunity to admire South Africa’s diverse marine life up close - including ragged-tooth sharks, African penguins and green turtles. The water park is the ideal choice for a fun family day out, with water slides, splash pools and supertubes.

Have Dinner Overlooking the Bay

Durban is full of excellent restaurants and bars, but if you’re looking for the ultimate romantic date night destination, pick one that overlooks the vast expanse of Durban Bay. Moyo and the Cargo Hold are both sure to impress. Located at the end of uShaka Pier, Moyo offers panoramic views of the glittering nighttime waterfront. Sip craft cocktails while dining on African-inspired cuisine, accompanied by soft music and the sound of the surf crashing against the pier below. Ship-shaped fine dining restaurant the Cargo Hold boasts stunning ocean vistas on one side, and a floor-to-ceiling view into the uShaka shark tank on the other.

Go Swimming With Sharks

For an even closer shark encounter, consider taking a 40-minute drive south of Durban to the tiny coastal town of Umkomaas. Umkomaas is the gateway to Aliwal Shoal, an offshore reef system known as one of the best places in the world to dive with sharks . Several scuba diving centers offer baited shark dives, using chum to attract oceanic blacktip sharks, bull sharks and tiger sharks (in season). Sightings are almost guaranteed, and if you don’t have your scuba license, don’t worry - operators like Aliwal Shoal Scuba offer shark snorkeling and even shark cage diving for those that require a little extra peace of mind.

10 Best Things To Do In The Coastal City Of Durban, South Africa

visit durban south africa

  • Destinations
  • South Africa

The typical tourist visiting South Africa has an itinerary that looks something like this: Fly into Johannesburg, head to Kruger for a safari, and then head to Cape Town for some wining and dining. While that’s got the makings of a fantastic trip, it does mean most visitors miss out on Durban, the third-largest city in the country. Often overlooked in favor of Cape Town or Johannesburg, Durban is quite possibly South Africa’s best-kept city secret.

Joburg may be trendy and Cape Town may be glamorous, but Durban is cool. Best known for its beaches and Afro-Indian culture, Durban has plenty to see and do. An hour by plane from Johannesburg and 2 hours from Cape Town, Durban is a great place to visit year-round thanks to its fantastic weather. So, if you are planning a trip to South Africa, make sure to add Durban to your itinerary.

Let’s delve a little deeper into Durban and discover some of the best things to see and do.

The Golden Mile Durban promenade

1. The Golden Mile

Probably the best place to start is the Golden Mile, which takes its name from a series of golden sandy beaches that stretch for 3.7 miles along the edge of the city’s business district. The paved promenade is the perfect place to walk, run, cycle, skateboard, or do a segway tour. The sandy beaches are a massive playground; take a dip in the blue Indian Ocean, stroll along the beach, try your hand at a sandcastle, or relax and work on that tan. This is probably the safest surfing spot in South Africa; hundreds of surfers take to the water here every day and there are shark nets and lifeguards year-round. Even if you’re not a surfer, this is a great place to watch the action.

Too hot for a stroll? Then “take the back seat” in a Zulu rickshaw. A century ago, more than 2,000 of them crowded Durban’s streets and docks. Now, only about 20 registered pullers remain, all wearing beaded headdresses and pulling similarly decorated rides.

The Golden Mile is also home to uShaka Marine World and Moses Mabhida Stadium (more about them below). You can take care of any souvenir shopping at the Amphitheatre Flea Market, held every Sunday at the beachfront.

Entrance of uShaka Marine World

2. uShaka Marine World

At one end of the Golden Mile is The Point, overlooking the mouth of Durban’s harbor. Once infamous for its gangsters and dockside prostitutes, The Point is now home to high-end condos. The main attraction here is uShaka Marine World — a water park, the largest aquarium in the country, and one of the most popular attractions in Durban. The highlight of a uShaka visit is the Ocean Walk experience, when you get to walk across the bottom of the Open Ocean Exhibit and observe all sorts of marine life, including several species of shark, tons of sardines, and rays. You can actually do more than just watch; uShaka also offers several snorkeling and scuba-diving activities. And if you fancy a bite, book a table at The Cargo Hold and you’ll be dining underwater!

Moses Mbhida Stadium rope swing

3. Moses Mabhida Stadium

At the other end of the Golden Mile is the city’s sports complex, dominated by the Moses Mabhida Stadium built for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The stadium is now used for a number of events, including concerts, cricket, football, golf practice, motorsports, and rugby games. If there’s no match on, it’s worth climbing the 500 steps, or riding the Sky Car to the top of the arch that stretches over the field, giving you unrivaled 360-degree views out over the coast and the city. Looking for an adrenaline high? Jump into the void 347 feet above the pitch and swing out in a huge 720-foot arc under the iconic arch; this is the world’s highest rope swing. It’s also the only stadium swing in the world and is even open for children under 18 (as long as they weigh over 90 pounds), should you have an adventurous teenager in tow.

Durban Botanic Gardens

4. Durban Botanic Gardens

The oldest surviving botanical gardens in Africa, founded in 1849, the Durban Botanic Gardens provides a captivating insight into the flora of the region. The property also has some captivating smaller gardens, like the breathtaking Orchid House, the award-winning Sensory Garden, the tea garden, and the herbarium. There’s an impressive collection of living fossil plants — pre-dinosaur cycads — known to have existed for more than 250 million years and now at risk of extinction. The gardens are also home to more than 50 species of resident birds. The gardens regularly host musical concerts, exhibitions, and an indigenous plant fair every September. Entry to the gardens is free and paid guided tours are available.

KwaMuhle Museum entrance

5. KwaMuhle Museum

The KwaMuhle Museum documents Durban’s urban growth as well as celebrating the efforts of those who fought to end apartheid. It’s a great place to learn more about the history of the city. The museum is housed in the former Native Affairs Department building, an infamous place responsible for enforcing apartheid legislation. Exhibits include photographs, documents, and video testimonials of township life, black migration, the apartheid years, and the contributions made by people responsible for the city’s development. It is one of four museums in Durban that tells the story of the city’s past. The other three are the Old House Museum, the Port Natal Maritime Museum, and the Old Court House Museum.

Florida Road, one of Durban’s trendiest areas

6. Florida Road

Florida Road used to be an elephant trail to the marsh that is now Durban’s Greyville Racecourse. Known for its well-preserved, 100-year-old Victorian and Edwardian buildings, today, this is one of Durban’s trendiest areas. Lined with cafés, cocktail bars, designer boutique stores, galleries, and eateries, the street comes alive after the sunset with locals and tourists who come to eat, shop, and enjoy Durban’s endless summer. Art lovers can enjoy the African Art Centre , Elizabeth Gordon Gallery , and the Artisan Contemporary Gallery. This is also one of the best places in the city to taste “bunny chow,” a staple Indian-Durban dish made from a loaf of bread that’s hollowed out and filled with curry.

7. Muthi Market

The muthi (traditional Zulu medicine) market in central Durban is an outdoor network of stalls stocked with everything from herbs to animal carcasses. Inyanga (traditional healers) offer lotions, potions, medicines, and other treatments for various ailments. You can purchase “ingredients” like snake skins, crocodile teeth, plants, bird claws, powders, talismans, and more. This tour is definitely not for everyone — the carcasses can be gory and the smells pungent — but it’s an interesting way to learn about Zulu culture and the world of traditional African healing. It’s best to go with a guide, as many vendors are not fluent in English. Street Scene is one tour company that offers visits here.

8. Indian Quarter

Durban has a large Indian community and lots of Indian heritage. It goes without saying that one of the best things to do in Durban is explore its Indian Quarter. Encompassing Victoria Street Market and Juma Masjid Mosque (the largest in the southern hemisphere), Durban’s Indian Quarter is a multicultural mix of sights, sounds, and exotic aromas. Indian, Pakistani, Chinese, and Somali vendors haggle along the narrow pavements, selling spices, saris, incense, intricate handmade jewelry, embroidered fabrics, beaded sandals, and more. Savvy shoppers will get some bargains here and the restaurants boast some of the most authentic Indian cuisine in Durban — make sure to sample the tasty street food.

9. Inanda Township And Heritage Trail

About 20 minutes northwest of Durban is the Inanda Valley, a densely populated semi-rural settlement that played a large role in shaping the history of South Africa. This is where Mahatma Gandhi came up with his passive-resistance philosophy in 1904. It’s also where one of South Africa’s oldest girls’ schools — the Inanda Seminary — was founded by American missionaries in 1869. President of the African National Congress, Dr. John Dube, was born here in 1871 and Nelson Mandela cast his vote here in South Africa’s first democratic elections in 1994. If you are not self-driving, join a tour like the one offered by African Angel .

Oyster Box Hotel pool view

10. Umhlanga Rocks

Ten miles north of Durban is Umhlanga Rocks (pronounced Umshlanga), a popular, upscale resort town where water sports enthusiasts will find plenty of things to do. Surfing, deep-sea fishing, whale watching, dolphin viewing, scuba diving, and kiteboarding are just some of the activities on offer.

There are long golden beaches and a terrific promenade for runs and walks. The Umhlanga Pier has been called one of the most beautiful in the world, with “whale bones” forming a ribcage over the walkway, colorful mosaics, grates where you can watch the water underfoot, and a lovely viewing platform at the end. One of the nicest sights in the area, particularly at sunset, is the lighthouse, which you can spot on a walk along the beach or from the terrace at the Oyster Box Hotel — one of South Africa’s best spots for a sundowner. The Oyster Box is also renowned for its curry buffet, where you can choose from at least 11 curries, including the traditional Durban lamb curry and red-hot beef vindaloo, as well as naans and homemade chutneys.

Thanks to safety nets, shark attacks at Durban’s beaches are rare. The KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board maintains the nets that protect the city’s beaches and, while you are in Umhlanga, it’s possible to book an early morning boat ride with the crew that maintains them. It’s rare to see a shark around the nets, but for those that really want a Jaws moment in their lives, there are public shark dissections at the Board’s visitor center.

Pro Tip: A useful resource for your Durban travels is to download the Durban Walking Tour – South Africa’s Melting Pot audio tour guide. It allows you to play and pause as you wish and provides a day or two of entertainment for less than $5. The guide includes maps and directions, as well as insider tips and photos. It’s like having an expert guide in your pocket, who’s available 24/7 on your schedule!

Valley of a Thousand Hills

Inland from the popular resort area of Umhlanga Rocks lies the Valley of 1,000 Hills , a beautiful region of gently rounded hills sprinkled with scenic viewpoints, Zulu homesteads, and gorges. The hills rise up along the banks of the Umgeni River as it flows into the Indian Ocean from the distant Drakensberg mountains. The old road between Durban and Pietermaritzburg runs along the southern edge of the valley, an area with magnificent views.

After passing Hillcrest and Botha's Hill, it comes to Phe-Zulu, a typical Zulu village where visitors can see traditional dance performances and witness the rituals of witch doctors.

PheZulu Safari Park has an abundance of animals that can be spotted, and a Crocodile and Snake park where visitors can go on a tour by knowledgeable guides. The park also offers accommodations.

Umhlanga Rocks

Umhlanga Rocks (pronounced Umshlanga), 16 kilometers north of Durban, is a popular, upscale resort town. Long golden beaches, interrupted by rocky coast, stretch for 200 kilometers north of Durban to the beautiful Isimangaliso Wetland Park , a UNESCO World Heritage Site , containing eight interlinking ecosystems; three major lake systems; and Africa's largest estuarine system, Lake St. Lucia .

In Umhlanga Rocks, water sports enthusiasts will find plenty of things to do. Surfing, deep-sea fishing, whale watching, dolphin viewing, scuba diving, and kiteboarding are some of the aquatic pursuits on offer.

The museum is housed in a former Native Affairs Department building, an infamous place responsible for enforcing the apartheid legislation. Today, it's a place of hope, where people who fought against injustice are honored, and diversity is celebrated.

A beautiful old building on Florida Road

Known for well-preserved 100-year-old Edwardian structures, Florida Road, stretching from Sandile Thusi Road to Innes Road, is a happening attraction in Durban. Lined with cafes, boutique stores, galleries, and eateries , the street comes alive after the sun sets with locals and tourists who come to eat, shop, and enjoy Durban's endless summer.

Art lovers can enjoy the African Art Centre, Elizabeth Gordon Gallery, and the Artisan Contemporary Gallery.

This is the best place in the city to taste " Bunny Chow ," a staple Indian-Durban dish made with a loaf of bread hollowed out and filled with savory curry.

Perfect wave at New Pier Beach

New Pier Beach, also known as Dairy Beach, is on Durban's Golden Mile and is a top surf spot in the city thanks to a consistent beach break. Surf conditions are best when there is a southwesterly wind, as it creates an optimal eastern swell angle. The wave can be ridden right and left. Low tide is when to ride, as this is when conditions are best; however, this break can get crowded in summer.

If you want to just chill out, this golden stretch of sand in front of the Durban Beach Restaurants is a good place to plop down a chair or towel and just sunbathe or chat with friends. When in the water here, keep an eye out for jellyfish.

Houses overlooking Inanda Dam

About 20 minutes northwest of Durban is Inanda township, which has a rich historical legacy. This is where Mahatma Gandhi came up with his passive-resistance philosophy while visiting in 1904. Inanda is also where the president of the African National Congress, Dr. John Dube, was born in 1871 and where Nelson Mandela cast his vote in South Africa's first democratic elections in 1994.

To learn more, follow the Inanda Heritage Route through the Inanda Valley, which includes the township. The driving route will take you to the Phoenix Settlement, where Gandhi once lived and where his printing press still resides. It will also take you to one of South Africa's oldest girls schools , the Inanda Seminary, which was founded by American missionaries in 1869. You'll also visit Dube's house , which is now a national monument, and his grave at the Ohlange Institute.

White rhinos in Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park

South Africa's oldest game reserve , Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park (formerly Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve), is about a two-hour drive from Durban. It can be visited on an organized day trip from Durban, or you can drive yourself. Tours arrange for transportation from the city and offer optional afternoon excursions, including an estuary boat trip, a stop at a wild cat sanctuary, or a visit to Dumazulu Cultural Village.

Established in 1895, Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park is one of the only places in KwaZulu-Natal where you have a shot of seeing all the Big Fiv e (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo). The park is also known for its rhino conservation, and both black and white rhino can be observed here. Other animals that call this 96,000-hectare reserve home are wild dog, cheetah, hyena, blue wildebeest, giraffe, and zebra. There are also 300-plus species of birds.

In terms of seeing wildlife, the best months to visit are May through October , which see less rain and allow for less green coverage that can hide animals. That said, during the winter wet season, you'll have baby animals to spot, as well as lush environs.

Blooming flowers along the Midlands Meander

The Midlands Meander is a driving route that starts just an hour's drive from Durban outside Pietermaritzburg. If you have a car, it is a fun day trip from the city. The route takes you through a scenic valley and covers about 80 kilometers.

Besides being a pretty drive, with a green- and gold-hued landscape and a Drakensberg mountain backdrop, the route is known for its stops in small towns with serious handicraft scenes . From weaving to pottery to painting, wood crafts to leather goods and even fresh-made cheese, the route has more than a 150 places to eat and shop along the way.

Activities are also plentiful in this area, and you'll find everything from horseback riding to skydiving and white water rafting experiences. Midmar Dam is a popular place for locals to picnic or barbecue on weekends.

An important industrial center and port, the city owes its cosmopolitan air to its rich ethnic diversity forged from a turbulent history. Clashes between the British traders, who settled here in 1823; the Zulus, on whose tribal land Durban lies; and the Boers, played a part in shaping Durban's character. Contract laborers who hailed from India in 1860 to work on the sugar plantations remained after their contracts expired, making Durban the largest population of Indians in South Africa.

Mahatma Gandhi, who went to South Africa as a lawyer, developed his political views alongside Dr. John Dube, the first president of ANC (African National Congress) in Inanda Valley, 20 minutes north of Durban. It was here that Nelson Mandela cast his first vote in a democratic South Africa in 1994.

Top 10 Things To Do and See in Durban, South Africa

Durbans beaches are popular with tourists and locals

The enchanting coastal city of Durban is a popular tourist destination in South Africa, where visitors can enjoy all sorts of fun activities for the entire family. Whether you chose to go swimming or visit a museum, there is never a dull moment on the KwaZulu-Natal coast – here’s our pick of the most exciting activities and sights in Durban.

Head out to the golden mile.

The Golden Mile beachfront is a famous destination for joggers, surfers, sunbathers, bikers, water sports enthusiasts and for those in the mood for a relaxed stroll. The popular ‘mile’ is actually a 4-mile (6.5km) stretch that extends from Blue Lagoon South to Addington Beach and Durban Harbor. The name stems from the golden sand beaches along the coastal edge of the city. There is a wide pavement that makes it easy to walk, jog or bike the route. Or you could join the many surfers, kite boarders and sandcastle architects and soak up the warm sun.

Visit Durban Botanical Gardens to see living fossils

Durban Botanical Gardens was established in 1849 by Dr Charles Johnston on the edge of the Berea Ridge. The 37-acre property is Durban ’s oldest public institution and Africa’s oldest surviving botanical garden. It is a place of interest because of its many living fossil plants. These pre-dinosaur cycads (seed-producing plants extending back 250 million years) face possible extinction in the wild. A visit to Durban Botanical Gardens provides a rare opportunity to see these ancient plants up close.

Enjoy sun and sand at the beach

With its subtropical climate and more than 300 days of sunshine every year, spending a day at the beach is possible almost every day in Durban. If you consider yourself a decent surfer, you might want to try the South Coast for world-class surfing. Addington Beach is the preferred choice if you are planning a fun day on the beach for the entire family. Bay of Plenty is the destination for volleyball tournaments. The Golden Mile beaches are conveniently located closest to Durban’s city center (which is probably why they are so popular), and if these options aren’t enough, you could also try Umhlanga Coast.

Go on a KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board boat tour

Shark attacks in Durban are extremely rare because the beaches along the KwaZulu-Natal coastline are the only ones in South Africa protected by shark safety gear. While in Durban , why not stop by Umhlanga and join the KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board crew for a boat tour on an early morning? Enjoy watching the safety system at play and learn about sharks, and you may even get to see dolphins, turtles and rays.

View the Umhlanga Lighthouse from Lighthouse Bar

The red-and-white candy-striped lighthouse in Umhlanga is always a glowing fascination to visitors. Why not view the splendid structure while sipping a refreshing cocktail? Located on the premises of The Oyster Box hotel, Lighthouse Bar is a colourful establishment with a fantastic view of the Umhlanga Lighthouse and the beach. Don’t miss a beautiful sunset evening with live music in the background at this romantic rendezvous spot. Try their signature drink, the Umhlanga Schling, made with ingredients unique to Durban such as cane sugar and cane spirit.

Umhlanga Lighthouse

Follow the Inanda Heritage Trail

The Inanda Heritage Trail forms part of the Freedom Route, which recognizes important historical areas in the KwaZulu-Natal province. The trail begins at the Inanda Township, home to the Ohlange Institute, where in 1994 Nelson Mandela voted in South Africa’s first democratic elections. The Inanda Heritage Trail encompasses key historic sites that have been pivotal to the shaping of South Africa as it is today. Some of these sites include Gandhi’s Phoenix Settlement, where Mahatma Gandhi nurtured his passive-resistance philosophy, and the Inanda Seminary, one of South Africa’s oldest schools for girls, founded by American missionaries in 1869.

Dine at The Cargo Hold

If you choose to visit uShaka Marine World, be sure to book in for lunch or dinner at The Cargo Hold , located on board the infamous Phantom Ship, where guests can dine in fine style surrounded by the deep blue in one of Durban ’s most remarkable settings. Enjoy some of the spiciest, fruitiest and most exotic flavors procured from the freshest produce in KwaZulu-Natal, and sample expertly prepared meals while witnessing the beautiful ocean view and the sharks swimming in the tank. Try the grilled crayfish or langoustines, a mouthwatering dish prepared with herbs, spices, lemon and olive oil.

Go to Suncoast Casino and Entertainment World

Located at the northern end of the Golden Mile, Suncoast Casino and Entertainment World is a complex that houses cinemas, many restaurants, a beach bar, its own semi-private beach and, of course, a casino. If you visit during the months from September to January you will see many recreational cyclists who use the casino grounds as a base for their training rides up the North Coast. The casino offers both smoking and non-smoking areas where you can test out your luck in a comfortable environment.

Swing into Moses Mabhida Stadium

One of the host stadiums for the 2010 World Cup, this multipurpose sporting arena has evolved into a venue for a variety of surprising activities. A particular highlight, if you’re feeling brave, is the appropriately named Big Rush Big Swing, where you can strap yourself in and dive 80m (263ft) to experience the world’s biggest swing (as recognised by the Guinness Book of Records ).

Experience Indian Culture

More Indians reside in Durban than any other country outside India itself. Early immigrants worked on sugar cane farms in current-day KwaZulu-Natal, and many women still wear sarees, the national dress of India, and Indian cuisine is popular. Try a samosa (a savory fried pastry filled with spiced vegetables or meat) or bunny chow (a hollow, half-loaf of bread with curry).

Durban's Golden Mile , a 3.7 mile stretch of sandy beach, invites surfers and swimmers to enjoy the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. Vendors sell assorted crafts along the shore, and you can find many beautiful swimming pools along the esplanade. Hop into a rickshaw and ride along the beach; later, dine and dance at a beachside restaurant, trendy club or luxury hotel.

See Marine Life and More

At the end of the Golden Mile, look for uShaka Marine World , a 40-acre theme park. There are five main sections to explore: a snorkeling lagoon, an interactive animal show area, a shark cage diving area, a water park with slides and a reptile exhibit. Save time to pick up a snack or shop for ethnic clothing, surfing gear or souvenirs at Village Walk .

Shop and Dine from Daylight to Dark

Look for fine dining, shopping and entertainment along Durban’s Florida Road , considered one of the city's top spots for nightlife. Sidewalk cafes open in the early morning hours, and locals and tourists browse the galleries, boutique shops, and eateries until they close late in the evening. But don't leave yet. That's when the trendy bars and clubs start buzzing.

At Shakaland and PheZulu Safari Park , both located in the magnificient Valley of a 1000 Hills, you can walk through beehive huts (replicas of Zulu homesteads), sip traditional beer, watch tribal dances and participate in traditional ceremonies. Journey about 40 miles west of Durban to see  Isithumba Adventure Park , an authentic, rural Zulu village. While you’re there, join a tour and experience more Zulu customs, go horseback riding, or see the sights on a 4x4 excursion.

Dive into History

Follow the Inanda Heritage Route , where you can take a deep dive into some of the city’s most important historical sites. You’ll find Mahatma Gandhi’s house and International Printing Press and Museum in his Phoenix Settlement, a communal living society. Stop by Ohlange Institute to see the place where Nelson Mandela cast his vote for democracy. Continue to beautiful Inanda
Dam to make a day of it.

Durban Area Extras

Make Durban your jumping-off point for exploring the incredible scenery, wildlife, wetlands and mountains in Greater KwaZulu-Natal , roughly 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 hours away. Or take a guided walk or self-guided driving tour at Hluhluwe Game Reserve, where Zulu Kings once hunted and established the first conservation laws. 15 Reasons to Visit Durban, At LEAST Once in Your Life

Visit Durban … Described by CNN as ‘the coolest city in South Africa you’ve never seen’.

And ranked higher by Mercer in its annual Quality of Living survey than both Cape Town and Johannesburg , for yet another year, South Africa’s east coast city has taken its rightful place as one of the best cities in the country to visit.

But accolades aside. Why should you visit?

Here are 15 reasons to visit Durban, at least once in your life…

Berea in Durban

The laid-back lifestyle

When it comes to the laid-back stakes of coastal cities in South Africa, Durban wins hands down.

Slops and shorts are standard apparel, all year round – even the winters in Durban produce balmy days that easily give Mozambique and European summers a run for their money (in fact, they’re better, even, than the city’s sticky summers).

Durban has been likened to the Mediterranean for its beach-bum vibe and relaxed atmosphere.

Berea in Durban

Beaches all year round

Attributable to the glorious weather Durban experiences all year, its beaches are as swimmable in winter as summer and warm – unlike its sister city, Cape Town.

Durban’s Golden Mile (the beach front strip that lights up at night that is arguably Durban’s greatest icon) is a surfer’s idea of utopia, whilst beaches north of Durban, although wilder, attract as much attention.

Visit Durban

Unpretentious and multi-cultural, depending on where you go, Durban’s people are as varied as they are, almost without exception, friendly.

If you want vibey and culturally mixed head to the harbour or down town Durban; to Chatsworth or Tongaat for Indian curries, or to Umlazi or KwaMashu for house music and braaied meat.

Visit Durban

Durban has fast caught up with its more worldly cousins – Johannesburg and Cape Town – when it comes to food and coffee.

Despite its overwhelming curry fame, it also has a healthy craft beer, food and spirits scene (with the odd distillery producing spirits made with local ingredients) and active weekly food markets like the I Heart Market and the Morning Trade Market.

Visit Durban

The quirky neighbourhoods

Like most cities the world over it’s about those hip and happening spots that make a visit so worthwhile. And Durban is no exception.

Station Drive Precinct is the newest kid on the block, transforming a former light industrial, no-go area into a contemporary gathering of restaurants, breweries and designers.

Leafy Glenwood, in the shadow of the city’s university, plays host to its own selection of cool eating spots.

Morningside lies on the hill above Durban’s city centre, its Florida Road a well established restaurant, coffee shop and pub mecca.

Rivertown District is Durban’s answer to Maboneng in Johannesburg , an inner-city revival that has its own night food and craft market (Smarket).

The historical tours

Head down to the Durban Green Hub at the Blue Lagoon for a variety of tours of Durban – Woza Inanda offers trips on its Inanda Heritage Route – walking trails and guided routes that explore Gandhi’s life, the Ohlange Institute, and the Shembe Settlement amongst other places.

Or head inland on a Battlefields tour.

Visit to Durban

The tidal pools

Snorkelling in Durban is one of its lesser known highlights.

The city’s beaches are warm, the sea life unusually abundant and the water clear (provided you know your tides).

For exceptional tidal pools head to the north coast where you’ll find the Umdloti Pools, and Salt Rock tidal pool (Thompson’s is close by too).

Vetch’s Pier (or Vetchies) at uShaka Beach is also a popular snorkelling and dive site.

Durban Visit

Victoria Street Market

Durban’s inner-city street market, on Bertha Mkhize Street, is a predominantly Indian spice and flea market with a big north African influence in the form of curios, art and jewellery.

But it’s also the starting point of the 9 Markets of Warwick Tour that explores all the markets that connect up at Warwick Junction.

Durban

The walking tours

Durban Experience offers a couple of walk-about tours in its city centre, daily at 09h30 and 13h30 (but book a day in advance to avoid disappointment).

The Oriental walk-about explores the Point, the old Durban station, Gandhi’s influence on the city, the city’s architectural styles and the meat and fish markets.

The Historical walk-about explores Farewell Square, the city’s most historical buildings, and City Hall.

Durban City Hall

The sardine run

The Cape boasts whales, Durban has the sardine run – an almost-annual May / June migration of huge shoals of silver sardines from the cold oceans of the country’s Cape up along the coastline to Durban.

Described as a ‘feeding frenzy’ for thousands of birds and larger fish who gamely feed on the more often than not 7 km long, 1.5 km wide and 30 metres deep phenomenon, it is a spectacle that travels the length of the coastline.

I Heart Market in Durban

The Drakensberg

On Durban’s doorstep is one of KwaZulu-Natal’s two World Heritage Sites – the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg .

Aside from its sheer beauty, and impressive mountain peaks that stretch for well over 200 kilometres, what makes it so popular is its accessible plateau and the slopes and mountains that provide some of the best and most strenuous hiking in the country.

For unspoilt outdoor wilderness you would be hard-pressed to beat the Drakensberg .

Berea in Durban

The Moses Mabhida Stadium , Durban’s 2010 World Soccer Cup legacy, is anything but a static white elephant. Quite the opposite.

You can journey your way across the stadium’s arch on the SkyCar to a platform that gives you gobsmacking views over Durban.

The single cabin runs on steel tracks that, on the return journey, rolls under its own gravity.

Berea in Durban

People’s Park

Just below the stadium is People’s Park which, if you have children, you simply have to visit.

It includes a track and field area, a fantastic kids’ play gound and a café (where you can sip on coffee whilst watching your kids play). At night the park often hosts music festivals and shows.

I Heart Market in Durban

Outdoor Living

Whilst in Durban make sure to head to the Umhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve – a quiet, unassuming bit of wetland and dune forest; the Beachwood Mangroves where you’ll find chameleons the size of your thumb; and Hawaan Forest, Durban’s ancient strip of protected forest.

Best way to spend 3 days in Durban, South Africa

Long overlooked for Cape Town and Johannesburg, Durban, South Africa’s best-kept secret, is slowly emerging as a promising destination for travelers. Known for its beaches and Afro-Indian culture, Durban offers plenty of beautiful attractions. Three days is just enough time to experience the diversity this city has to offer, but you can absolutely make any changes you like, to adapt the tour to your preferences. Our 3-day suggested itinerary will give you a real taste of this charming city and you will be introduced to its best attractions.

Things to consider before traveling to Durban, South Africa:

Health – South Africa has several world-class private hospitals and medical centres providing specialist services by highly skilled professionals. Though in rural area, hospitals deal with primary health care and limited range of health care, trained medical professionals are deployed around the country. Getting a comprehensive travel insurance before departure is recommended as medical costs can be quite expensive. Exercise safety precautions if engaging in any sexual activities as South Africa has the highest incidence of HIV/AIDS infection.

Food and water safety – Hygiene standards in relation to food safety is generally high in most restaurants, hotels and clubs. It is safe to eat vegetables, fresh fruits and salads. Chicken, meat and fish are of excellent quality thus you can enjoy South Africa’s local cuisine. Tap water is potable however, not all water in rural areas is safe to drink ergo bottled water is advised.

Weather – South Africa is in a subtropical location with plenty of sunny, dry days. Winter is nothing compared to what is experience in Europe and snow is rare. Rainy months are from May to August and Summer is from November to February. The city is popular among local travelers and most accommodation options fill up during holidays (December and January).

Safety and security – There is currently no nationwide security advisory in effect for South Africa. Check your country’s travel advisory website to get the most up-to-date information for your personal safety abroad. Keep your guard up at all times and avoid any streets that are not crowded. Do not carry debit or credit cards with you, or hide it in your bra or shoes. There were incidences of robbery when offenders will escort you to an ATM and make you take out as much as you can. If you are staying in a hotel, leave your passport and other valuables in the safety deposit box in the reception. Just carry a photocopy of your passport. If you are renting out a car, always keep the car locked and don’t leave valuables. Do not stop for any hitch hiker or person in trouble on the open road.

Getting around – Durban is the third largest city in South Africa, so getting around is pretty simple and easy. The city features an excellent public transport network consisting of trains, taxis, public buses, tourist buses, rickshaws and rental cars. The city is also is bicycle friendly and can also be easily explored by foot. Another reliable option when getting around is by Uber.

Where to stay – Durban has a wide range of accommodation options, with something for every level of comfort and budget. If you would like to experience authentic local life, then we suggest staying in one of the locally-run homestays and guest houses. Not only that homestays are great value for money, it’s also the best way to learn the local cultures and customs. If you want to be close to some of the city’s prime beach-side attractions, then you can stay at one of the boutique hotels and beach bungalows in Durban Beachfront.

Detailed itinerary: Best way to spend 3 days in Durban, South Africa

Day 1: Durban Harbor

Today is spent learning all about Durban Harbor. Travel to your chosen accommodation where you will be staying for two nights. Get settled and spend the morning in your hotel to recover from jet lag. If you are stressed out, or simply needing a place where you can recharge and enjoy some downtime, then laze around Golden Mile , the crescent-shaped stretch of golden beaches. You may also get a panoramic view of the city at Moses Mabhida Stadium   located at the other end of the Golden Mile.

Moses Mabhida Stadium, Durban, South Africa

In the afternoon, explore the many attractions in the harbor such as  uShaka Marine World , uShaka Sea World Aquarium and Durban Botanic Gardens . If you have extra bucks to splurge, get a bird’s eye helicopter view of Durban. After a full day exploring, enjoy dinner at one of the restaurants with a view of the harbor. Do not miss to enjoy some seafood platters at the Cargo Hold and Moyo in uShaka Marine World.

Day 2: Durban Central

On your second day, leave before dawn and wait for the sun of the new day to appear over the Indian Ocean at the North Beach , which is still part of the Golden Mile. Waiting for the sunrise is probably one of the most fascinating experiences you could get in Durban. Then, it’s time to hit the sun and bask in the laid-back lagoon-type swimming area of the Umdloti Beach . If you want something extreme or if you want your own version of Jaws, then you may join one of the Cage Shark Diving tours in the city.

North Beach, Durban, South Africa

After you’ve dried yourself off, get acquainted with Durban Central’s best attractions aboard the Ricksha Bus . It’s a 3-hour hop on/hop off trip around the central district taking in sights like the Victoria Street Market , Juma Masjid Mosque , St. Emmanuel Cathedral , and others. Spend the afternoon wandering through the expansive Markets of Warwick and shops fresh seafood, herbs, clothing, and many more.

Day 3: Msinsi Nature Reserve

After experiencing the laid-back beaches and the wonder of local culture of Durban, take a day trip or stay overnight at Msinsi Nature Reserve , one of South Africa’s lesser-known game-viewing destinations. Managed by the South African state entity, Umgeni Water, the nature reserve provides controlled access to the dams. While it does not have the great wildlife and wonders of other South African nature reserves, Msinsi offers plenty of recreational activities to keep the visitors engaged.

Visit Durban, South Africa

  • Accommodation

Wrapped around a sheltered bay, Durban is a gateway to South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal and Drakensberg regions, but also a destination in its own right. Its multicultural population is bolstered by Zulus and the largest concentration of Indian descendants outside India, which is reflected in the city’s food and culture.

Tour the streets with a guide and you can sample Afro-Indian delicacies such as bunny chow (hollowed-out bread filled with curry), uncover a little of the city’s apartheid history and visit some of the contemporary galleries that have sprung up in the up-and-coming Glenwood district. And, down by the water, watch surfers tackling the waves from the city’s gold-sand beaches.

Durban beachfront

In its historic core, grand colonial villas with Victorian lacework balconies rub alongside Art Deco buildings and a wide range of restaurants, cafés and bars.

Contrast this with a stroll along the waterfront boardwalk, which is reminiscent of California, complete with surfers and street performers. You can also spend time on the long sweeps of golden sand, lapped by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean.

To make the most of your time in Durban, we recommend spending a day touring the city with a local guide who can help unravel its past and present.

You begin with a visit to Africa’s oldest surviving botanical garden, which was established in 1849. Many of the plant species here are endemic to the country. Some, such as cycads and palms, have adapted to the tropical climate this part of South Africa experiences. You can visit the orchid house, wander around the spring-fed lake and see jacaranda trees that have been growing since the late-19th century.

Then, you’ll head to Glenwood, a district that has become a popular haunt of young artists. Walls are ablaze with punchy street art, and works still fresh from the easel hang in small contemporary galleries. You might get a chance to meet some of the people behind these pieces and ask them about what inspired them.

Bunny Chow, Durban

You might try bunny chow, samosas or Bombay crush — a milkshake-style drink made with rose syrup, milk, tukmaria (basil) seeds and vanilla ice cream.

Seafood also plays a big part in the city’s food scene, particularly during the annual sardine migration that passes along its shores in June or July.

In the afternoon, you’ll hear about the impacts of apartheid on the city’s residents at the Kwa Muhle Museum. Nelson Mandela cast his first vote in Durban in 1994 in the country’s first all-race elections, and just an hour and a half outside the city you can visit the site where he was arrested.

As part of your tour, you can also visit the Moses Mabhida Stadium, which hosted the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The SkyCar ride takes you up the stadium arch to a 106 m (348 ft) high viewpoint overlooking the city and ocean.

Best time to visit Durban

The subtropical climate means summer (October to March) is hot, humid and wet. It’s best to visit outside this time, when it tends to be mild and sunny.

Top Attractions To Visit In Durban, South Africa

D urban is one of South Africa’s culturally blended cities. It delivers the beach, the bush and the Berg (mountain ranges) in one location. Located on the country’s east coast, Durban is the largest city of the KwaZulu-Natal province, overlooking the Indian Ocean.

While cities like Johannesburg and Cape Town get all the attention, Durban has its own unique flavor and worth a visit. Its tropical climate makes it an ideal destination throughout most of the year. With Indian, African and European influences, Durban is where you’ll find great food, art, architecture and activities.

Here are the top attractions to visit during a stay to Durban.

Phansi Museum

The Phansi Museum is an amazing place to start your Durban adventures. Pronounced ‘punzi,’ meaning ‘below’ or ‘beneath’ in isiZulu, ‘Phansi’ is the place beneath, where the ancestral spirits dwell. The cultural site houses art and artifacts that are central to life in the region from personal style to housekeeping.

Phumzile Nkosi, the museum’s hostess and tour guide, is the true gem of this experience. Nkosi, a descendant of Swazi Royalty, provides color and context to an already vibrant culture. Through guided tours and personal stories, she shares a firsthand account of the differences between village life and city life through the lens of signature clothing, everyday tools and goods.

Tours can last between 20 minutes and an hour, depending on the time available.

PheZulu Cultural Experience

For an immersive South African experience, visit PheZulu village to feel the rhythm of Africa. Located inside the PheZulu Safari Park, the village welcomes visitors into its space to explore Zulu culture.

From traditional beehive-shaped thatched huts to local beliefs and rituals, you’ll spend time with members of the Gasa clan. Zulu dancing shows take place daily, except Tuesdays, where dancers dress in traditional garb, showing off their skills with grace, agility and humor.

In addition to the cultural village, the safari park also offers game drives for wildlife spotting. A reptile park, a restaurant, self-catering chalets, and a bed and breakfast are also on the safari’s property. To get there, book a tour or hire a private car to make the 45-minute drive from Durban’s city center.

The Oyster Box Hotel

The Oyster Box Hotel is where luxury meets the sea in Durban. It’s where celebrities, like Naomi Campbell and Royal family members, stay while in Durban. Khloe Kardashian and French Montana also came here for vacation during their brief stint as a couple.

Located on Umhlanga’s beachfront, the hotel overlooks the Indian Ocean and an iconic lighthouse on the property. The 75-year-old property has an old-world feel, initially starting as a tea garden that grew into a hotel. Renovated at the turn of the century, every guest room is decorated with curated furniture and artworks, making the most of its tropical setting.

Dine at one of two on-site restaurants or indulge in the curry buffet which offers at least 11 curries daily, including meat, fish and vegetarian options. The Palm Court at The Oyster Box serves a lavish High Tea experience, along with a buffet of sweet and savory treats.

Nelson Mandela Capture Site

Located about an hour from Durban, this museum is very unassuming upon arrival in the middle of the countryside. However, this site holds a significant role in the history of South Africa, as it relates to the capture and arrest of its most prominent figure: Nelson Mandela.

The historical landmark comprises a massive steel sculpture and visitor center honoring Mandela’s legacy. Acknowledging the 50th anniversary of his capture, the interactive steel sculpture is the largest of its kind in South Africa. An immersive visitor center features a 360-degree film screen, along with hundreds of historical artifacts and photographs. At the entrance, there’s also a replica of the Austin Westminster that Mandela was driving in when he was arrested on Aug. 5, 1962.

Howick Falls

En route to the Nelson Mandela Capture Site, a visit to Howick Falls is a must. Howick Falls is a natural waterfall on the Umgeni (or Mngeni) River, northwest of Pietermaritzburg. Towering 364 feet, the second-tallest waterfall in South Africa is a sacred site for Zulu people. Local legend tells the story of a serpent-like creature said to live at the bottom of the falls called the Inkanyamba.

Located in the town of Howick, the area offers opportunities to hike and explore along the river, which feeds the falls. In addition to three walking trails, abseiling, rock climbing and boating activities are available for the adventurous.

Weekends are the best time to visit the falls when craft vendors are aplenty and grilled foods are sold. Viewing this magnificent landscape is free, which is good news for those looking to explore on a budget.

Hit One of Several Beaches

A highlight of visiting Durban is the numerous beaches available to enjoy. The city’s Golden Mile is a popular stretch of beachfront in the city with a promenade that runs alongside the coast. North Beach, the Bay of Plenty, Addington Beach and South Beach make up the Golden Mile and are some of the best beaches in Durban. Swimmers, surfers and sun lovers can all find their perfect beach in this area.

Umhlanga Rocks Beach is another popular seaside destination. Stretching more than 120 miles, it is where you’ll find The Oyster Box Hotel, along with high-end condominiums, resorts, lodges and B&Bs. Umhlanga offers a bit of refuge from the busier parts of the city. It offers peaceful vibes on the Indian Ocean .

Africa's Travel Indaba 2024 to be held in South Africa's Durban

Wednesday, 24 Apr 2024

JOHANNESBURG, April 23 (Xinhua) -- South Africa is expected to see some economic boost next month as the Africa Travel Indaba 2024 is set to be held in the coastal city of Durban, a government official said on Tuesday.

Deputy Minister of Tourism Fish Mahlalela said at a media launch that this year's Africa Travel Indaba will be held in Durban on May 13-16. The event has confirmed 990 exhibitors from 26 African countries.

A post-event survey revealed that Africa's Travel Indaba 2023 had a total economic contribution of 1.2 billion South African rand (about 63 million U.S. dollars), which included a direct contribution of more than 400 million rand to the South African economy, said Mahlalela.

Despite the subdued economic environment, the country is optimistic that the 2024 edition will match or exceed these figures and help create more job opportunities, he said.

Africa's Travel Indaba is an iconic African leisure trade show, owned by South African Tourism, with the specific objective of creating market access for the vast array of African leisure tourism products.

"Indaba" comes from the Zulu language, widely spoken in South Africa, and means a meeting to discuss a serious topic.
