Llanes is a coastal town in the province of Asturias in the region of Asturias and Cantabria . Llanes is considered to be one of the most beautiful towns in Spain .

Llanes is a charming coastal resort on the beautiful northern Spain coastline, one of our favourites in the Asturias region. With the Picos de Europa behind, and on a very attractive stretch of coast - lots of cliffs, coves and beaches - its position is great.

Above one of the town's beaches, the Playa del Sablon, there is a long rambla, the San Pedro Walk. It's a great place to go for a walk and see the dramatic coastal scenery on one side and the town on the other. Another of the nice town beaches is the Toro beach.

The best beach in the area, and one of the best in Spain is the Cuevas del Mar beach with its beautiful sculpted rocky cliffs. The beach is now a protected landscape but that does not stop you from going and enjoying the beach and sea and there is a car park nearby.

Also to look out for are geological formations called 'jesters' which are holes in the cliff that go right down to the sea and through which spumes of seawater are sprayed out of the top. It often makes a howling noise at the same time! There are four jesters in the area; Bufones de Pria, Bufones de Arallinas, Bufon de Santiuste and Bufon de Santa Clara.

Llanes itself has a lovely old town with medieval walls and a number of impressive buildings to look out for. There is a circular medieval tower along the walls which is home to the tourist office and there are some Renaissance palaces including the Casa del Cercau, the Duques de Estrada and the Palacio de Gastanaga.

The old quarter has been listed as a 'historic and artistic' complex.

Many locals from Llanes emigrated to the "Americas' to make their fortunes and many did indeed return rich. They then built large houses for themselves in an eclectic mix of styles from modernist to mountain chalet and inside had furniture brought in from Paris and Barcelona.

These houses are collectively known as the 'Indianas' and examples can be seen on La Calle de la Concepcion, near the Casino, and Avenida de la Paz.

The harbour of Llanes is interesting with its 'Los Cubos de Memoria' (Cubes of Memory). This is a breakwater to protect the harbour made up of lots of cubes of reinforced concrete. It was designed by Augustin Ibarrola and the cubes are decorated to represent the towns history and fauna and flora as well as the artist himself.

Llanes was once one of Spain's most dangerous ports and its maritime history is described in Llanes Maritime Exhibition Centre.

Places to visit nearby

The pretty, small town of Potes is nearby. It is a good place to start a walk in the Picos de Europa mountains. Also with a backdrop of the Picos de Europa mountains is the pleasant town of Cangas de Onis with its 'Roman Bridge'.

Ribadesella

Ribadesella is a charming seaside resort with an old town, a sandy beach and Modernista villas.

Llanes is a perfect example of a historic town. Its old town centre is an official historic and artistic heritage site, with interesting civil, religious and military architecture.

Its most important areas are around Paseo de San Pedro, Paseo de San Antón, the river Carrocedo and the harbour - it was once an important part of the fishing and whaling industries. Its heritage buildings include 300 metres of city walls, dating from the 13th century; the castle tower; the Basilica of Santa María del Conceyu, which was begun in the mid-12th century; Gaztañaga palace and the palace of the Dukes of Estrada, and the house of the 19th-century politician Posada Herrera, now the Municipal Cultural Centre.  

Llanes also has magnificent beaches , such as San Antolín, Torimbia, Barro, Celorio, Poo, Sablón, and Toró. If you like natural areas, you can stroll along Paseo de San Pedro , a clifftop walk more than a kilometre long, with great views over the town and the Cantabrian Sea.

Llanes has the greatest number of beaches of any municipality in Asturias. The beaches are situated along the 56km of coastline in the borough of Llanes.

There are beaches to suit every taste: near the town and well populated, out in the wilds and seldom visited, large, small, open and enclosed, sheltered or open to the weather, with or without a river, sandy, rocky etc. The beaches at Toró and Palombina-Las Cámaras has been awarded the Q for Quality award.

The tide goes through a full cycle every 12 hours, more or less, making a total of two low tides and two high tides every 24 hours. There is about 4 metres difference between the low and high tides, when there is a full moon and 1.5 metres when there is a new moon.

The water temperature varies between 11 ºC in winter and 19 ºC in summer. These temperatures are subject to changes according to the presence of warmer or cooler currents in the sea.

Beaches, the tide and water temperature

The beach at Andrín

Semi circular in shape, this beach is 240 metres in length. You can get to it along the roadway from the village of Andrín. There is a car park, rescue services, a Red Cross post, a beach clearing service, waste bins and a refreshments stall.

The beach at Antilles

This shell shaped beach is composed of fine, white sand and is located in a rural area.

The beach at Ballota

This is classified as a natural beach, perfectly shell shaped and some 350 metres in length. It is close to the village of Cué. From the village you continue along the road, heading east, away from Llanes. This is the road which goes up to the viewing point at La Boriza.

The beach at Barru

This is found in the village of the same name and is one of the most popular beaches on the Llaniscan coast. It is shell shaped with fine sand and is about 300 metres in length. It is an urban beach and has a variety of services and equipment.

The Beach at Borizu

This is a semi natural beach since it is less developed than Celorio. It is about 400 metres in length and is situated in a largely residential zone close to Celorio and close to the area where the campsites are.

The beach at Buelna

This is classified aas a natural beach both because its great beauty and its marvellous countryside. It was formed as a result of a group of various depressions in the limestone. There is an enormous pinacle, locally called, “El Picón”, the Great Peak.

The is a real marvel of a beach with rocks sculpted by the sea, fine sand and transparent waters. It is located about 1.5 km from Villanueva where it is possible to see various examples of Indiano architecture.

The Beach at El Canal (Villanueva)

Exceptionally beautiful small beach, situated at the end of a long, narrow canyon, covered with white sand, accessible on foot. It disappears at high tide.

The beach at El Sablón

This is the main beach in the town of Llanes. It is only 100 metres in length, but has fine sand, calm waters and a gentle semi-circualr shape. It is very close to the centre of the town, along the avenue which shares its name. On the left hand side of the beach you find St.

This is probably the most surprising part of the Asturian coast, declared a natural monument. Shaped as a half circle separated from the sea by the cliffs, it is a place where one can bathe without seeing the sea.

At the mouth of the San Cecilio River, located next to the famous Castro de las Gaviotas and close to  rural villages of Villahormes and Hontoria, from the which is accessed via an agricultural track.

The Beach at Palombina

Palombina and Las Cámaras with the Q for Quality award, despite being separate by an island, can be considered as the same beach. They measure about 300 metres and 100 metres in length, respectively.

The beach at Pendueles

Towards the east is the beach at Pendueles, next to the village which shares its name. Access to the beach is via a footpath. At low tide it can be seen to be linked to the island of Los Picones.

The Beach at Poo

The beach has been designated as a semi natural beach. It can be found along the right hand side of the cove which has been formed by the river Vallina. The beach is separated from the open sea and access to the sea is via a narrow pathway through the rocks.

The beach at Puertu Chicu

The beach here is 150 metres long and can be found at the end of the Paseo de San Antón (St. Anthony´s Walk) in Llanes itself. It is located on the right hand side as you look at the light house from the pavement. It completes the group of urban beaches within the town of Llanes.

The Beach at Puertu Secu

It's a small beach (35 mtrs. long) near Picones village. Due to its pedestrian access , It's a not very crowded beach.

The beach at San Antolín

This is the biggest beach in the borough. It is almost completely straight and measures about 1,200 metres in length and 62 metres in width. It is located at the mouth of the river Bedón, next to the little village of San Antolín.

The Beach at San Antonio (Picones)

Wild beach near Picones village is separted from the beach of Cuevas del mar by San Antonio point. The beach is 70 m. long, Shaped as a half circle, it has quite waters, pedestrian access and no facilities.

The beach at San Martín

Access to this beach is on foot. It can be found in the stretch of coast between Poo and Celorio. You can get to the beach along almost any coastal or agricultural track from either of the two villages. This is a totally natural beach and does not have any services.

The Beach at Sevalle

Placed in Niembro, it's a 50 m. wide cove. It's united to Toranda beach when the tide comes in. It has pedestrian access and wild environment.

The beach at Sorraos

Located close to the beach of Barro, it's a 70 m. wide beach and pedestrian access.

The beach at Toranda

Regarded as a natural beach, it has a refreshments stall, a life guard team, a Red Cross post and danger signals as well as a beach clearing service, showers, waste bins and telephones. It has been repeatedly awarded the Blue Flag of the European Community.

The beach at Torimbia

This is one of the most beautiful beaches along the Llaniscan coast. It has been popular since the 1960s because it is also a nudist beach. Access to the beach is via the village of Niembro, along the asphalted path towards the hill at the top of the Cape of Prieto.

The beach at Toró

This is a most spectacularly beautiful beach and has the Q for Quality award. It is shell shaped and  220 metres long.

The Beach at Troenzo

It's a 130 m. wide cove, located 100 m. from the road and between Barro and Celorio

The beach at Vidiago

From the mouth of the river Purón, and to the east of the beach at Andrín,you have to travel a good way along the coast which is made up cliffs, to come to the beach at Vidiago. This is also known as Novales or Bretones. The beach is divided almost in two by a rocky out crop.

About llanes.

Llanes in Asturias is a beautiful coastal town with lots of beaches, stunning hiking routes and much delicious seafood! 

Inhabited since prehistoric times, Llanes is an historic town whose defences were built at the beginning of the 13th century when King Alfonso IX brought the town under the rule of his kingdom. Some 300m of this pre-Romanesque wall remain standing whilst the defensive tower is now the Tourist Office. 

A period of prosperity followed from the 13th to the 17th century as the town became an important seaport, however, in 1802 Napoleon's troops arrived and made the town its headquarters until 1812. Skirmishes took place between the French Army and local guerrillas, and after the French left, many of the townspeople, known as Llaniscos, left for Latin America. 

Today, the town is a popular tourist destination for Spaniards and it enjoys sharing its past with visitors. The Museum of the Indianos shows the journey of those emigrating, many of whom returned with new-found wealth to build many of the mansions around the town which they use as holiday homes in the summer. There is also an ethnographic museum, and the Centro Regional de Artesanía y Artes Plásticas in nearby Poo is well worth a look to discover works by local artists and see them create their art in workshops.

The stunning beaches

There are 29 stunning beaches along the coast around Llanes with several in the town itself. Playa El Sablon is the most popular, a small beach of fine sand with calm waters, whilst Playa de Puerto Chico is a pretty beach with a lighthouse.

Slightly further east is the beautiful Playa de Toro, where rock formations pierce through the golden sand, the Playa de Antilles that connects the Isla Grande to the mainland at low ride, and the large beaches of Balotta and Andrin, which are renowned for their waves and are popular with surfers. To the west you'll find the Playa de Poo, a very calm beach that forms a narrow passage between the rocks. Follow the San Pedro walking route that extends 800m along the Llanes coast for some spectacular views of the sea and beaches.

In the town, one of Llanes most recognisable features is the Cubes of Memory, the brightly decorated cubes that form a breakwater in the harbour, which were created by Basque artist Agustín Ibarrola. With such great beaches and conditions for surfing, there are many surf schools around Llanes as well as opportunities for waterskiing, wakeboarding and snorkelling.

Inland, why not have a go at canyoning, quadbiking or caving to explore the striking gorges or go hiking or horseriding in the forest? If culture is more what you're interested in, there are many fiestas celebrated in Llanes with folk dancing and the townspeople wear their traditional costumes.

Food and festivals

With gastronomic festivals as well as the traditional religious fiestas, Llanes is a great place to try some Asturian cuisine. The town market is on a Tuesday selling crafts, jewellery, fabrics and plants and herbs whilst at the Friday market in nearby Posada you'll find local produce, including cheese and fish, for sale. Fish and seafood forms a large part of Llanes cuisine and crab, lobster, mullet, scorpionfish, anchovies and squid are just some of the delights on the menu.

Cheese is also very popular with the soft and creamy queso de Vidiago, the smoked Ahumado de Pría, and goat's cheeses such as La Cuevona. Fabada, a cassoulet-type stew, is a well-known dish and fabes beans are used throughout Asturian cuisine. Tortos served with picadello and fried eggs is also a common dish. 

Those with a sweet tooth are not left out with casiedella, an anise flavoured pastry with hazelnuts and walnuts and chocolates shaped and designed to look like the Cubes of Memory. Of course, don't forget to enjoy your meal with a glass of the local cider, sidra, poured in the traditional way from a great height.

The easiest way to visit Llanes is via the ferry to Santander . The ferry to Santander leaves from either Portsmouth or Plymouth and the drive along the coast to Llanes takes in the beautiful Parque Nacional de Los Picos de Europa.

Coastal path of Llanes

All llanes on the edge of the sea.

Conclusion more than 30 kilometers of travel for hiking or biking. Thirty kilometers that are taken by where they are taken go a long way . It is necessary to take a appropriate footwear (no shoes) and walk without fear provided with some sandwich. The most gourmets will not miss Asturian table in the villages, some of them almost unusual, others, loaded with tradition in the service sector, with restaurants and accommodations of true luxury.

In just an hour and a half, walking and contemplating without haste, you can do this little tour, which at the same time crosses from north to south, or vice versa, the friendly town of Puertas de Vidiago .

We leave the N-634 aside and start by entering the town. We cross a local road that contains splendid constructions to both margins. We continue and to our left is the bowling alley, with good weather you can enjoy watching the practice of this sport, traditional in the area. We follow the same rectilinear path. Already to the outskirts of the town, right next to the cemetery, a path begins, affluent of the coastal path with which it will cross more ahead, unmistakable by its whitish aspect of fine granilla. From there to buffoons we can take a quarter of an hour. In a moment the sea comes suddenly and majestically. We also have a great perspective of the mountains, in the middle the road continues and is lost in the horizon towards Andrín. We are throwing the brakes. Hidden and scattered, communicated by small paths, are the wells and cracks in the open sky that has carved the enraged water over the centuries. To be able to see the waterfalls, it is necessary that the Bay of Biscay be a bit rough and full tide . If the water roars, goes up snorting through the limestone walls and bursts in front of us, it is not advisable to be too bold and observe the phenomenon from a prudent distance.

We still have the courage to go around the whole journey. We cross the N-634 and follow a new path, perfectly marked, this time ascending. The ancestral wealth of Llanes has a custom symbol up there, twenty minutes away : the idol of Peña Tú . A being engraved on a mysterious rock, outlined by the winds that hit the flat mountain range where it is inscribed. Belongs to the Bronze Age and presents one of the best preserved symbols of the time, with paintings and engravings and a good amount of burial mounds in the environment. In the peña figure the abstract image of an individual: the supposed idol, more than a meter high and geometric line. Of his anatomy, being conscientiously wrapped in alleged robes, only the simple face is noticed with his two eyes and a nose. The engraving has a deep stroke and color pigments , like the weapon, possibly a sword, which is at his side. With outline outline, on the side of the rock facing east, several little men are discovered that give the feeling of walking. One of them carries a large cane in his right hand. Symbols all speak to us of hierarchies, fighters and battles, those of a rude man, limited in means of survival, which led the first stages of development of history in the council.
