15 Best Things to Do in Mildura (Australia)

The city of Mildura is at the heart of “Victoria’s Food Bowl” growing massive quantities of citrus fruit, wine grapes, avocados and wheat.

Dipping into this agriculture is all part of the Mildura experience, and there are wineries and open farms awaiting you close by.

The Murray River has always been crucial to Mildura’s fortunes, irrigating farms and helping to transport their cargo.

You can see how this massive waterway was made navigable in Mildura in the 1920s, and spend a blissful afternoon walking or riding along the city’s green riverfront.

Threading through the heart of Mildura is Feast Street, packed with places to eat and rich with Art Deco architecture .

Lock 11

Australia’s longest river wasn’t always easy to navigate, as it was susceptible to floods and sometimes dried up completely.

The answer for Mildura, which needed to get its citrus fruit, wine grapes, wool and grain to market, was a sophisticated and wide-ranging lock and weir system that took shape during the 1920s.

Lock 11 is a serious engineering achievement: The weir is made up of 24 steel trestles, each weighing 11 tonnes, but can be completely removed from the river during floods.

The lock is a sizeable concrete chamber, accommodating 4.5 megalitres and filled via two tunnels.

After watching a boat pass through the lock you can walk across to the relaxing parkland on Lock Island, which is accessible during daylight hours and has a perfect lookout over the weir on its south-east corner.

2. Vineyards and Wineries

Vineyard in Mildura

More than three quarters of all the grapes grown in the State of Victoria are harvested in Mildura and its environs.

In fact many of Australia’s wineries source their grapes from this part of the country.

Traditionally, varieties like Shiraz, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay do well in Mildura’s warm Mediterranean climate, with low rainfall and lots of sunshine.

So you’ll be free to delve into a wine region that has been producing vintages since 1891. There are dozens of vineyards and cellar doors (tasting rooms) within a short trip of Mildura’s CBD, counting some of the most respected names in the industry in Australia.

The Trentham Estate for instance is only 15 minutes away and has an impossibly pretty location, right on the Murray River.

You can sample an estate-grown Shiraz, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Gris at the cellar door, or sit down to an elegant meal at the restaurant, with a menu incorporating Mildura’s famous fresh produce.

3. Mildura Riverfront

Mildura Riverfront

The Murray River guarantees complete public access along its banks.

Since 1881 the State of Victoria has stipulated that there has to be a 60-metre green strip along the south bank to safeguard against floods and erosion, but also offer a space for public recreation.

The river is a huge asset for Mildura, which in recent years has been working on a riverfront redevelopment project.

There’s a chain of parks all down the riverside, from Rio Vista in the north, through Jaycee Park and then Ornamental Lakes Park.

At the latter you can board a paddle steamer for a cruise along the Murray, but this is also the setting for the Mildura Water Play Park, a go-to on summer days for families with younger children.

There are stately mature trees, neat lawns and picnic areas all the way, peppered with indigenous sculpture and places to sip coffee and watch the river flow.

4. Australian Inland Botanic Gardens

Australian Inland Botanic Gardens

Billed as the first semi-arid botanical garden in the Southern Hemisphere, this horticultural attraction across the Murray is where the desert literally comes to life.

There are more than 20,000 plantings here, a good half of which are scientifically labelled.

These come from all over Australia and New Zealand, but also Africa, Europe and North and South America.

Particularly compelling are the mature eucalyptus mallees, thought to be up to 2,500 years old, while the spectacular rose garden grows over 1,600 bushes in colour-coordinated patterns.

For a whirlwind tour you can take a tractor-train ride through the gardens every Saturday morning at 11:00.

5. Feast Street

Feast Street

Langtree Avenue has been Mildura’s main shopping and dining street since the very birth of the town.

One whole block, between Eight and Ninth Street is a pedestrian mall, while the palm and gum tree-lined stretch just north of it has the nickname Feast Street for its abundance of cafes, bars and globe-trotting line-up of restaurants.

Mildura’s warm days and balmy evenings allow for lots of outdoor seating and terraces on the footpaths, and on special occasions the entire street is closed off to road traffic.

There’s also lots of arresting old architecture on show, much of it in the Art Deco Style, like the Mildura Brewery (No. 20), which is a converted old cinema and the early-1940s T&G Building at the corner of Eight and Langtree, hard to miss for its clock tower.

6. Mungo National Park

Mungo National Park

Mildura is the closest city to what is one of the most incredible landscapes in the country, which is saying something for Australia.

A sacred meeting place for a number of Aboriginal Nations, and so tightly protected, Mungo National Park is composed of white dunes and dried-up lakebeds that look like they belong on the moon.

It was in this environment that the 40,000-year-old remains of Mungo Lady and Mungo Man were discovered, preserved by the sand and low humidity.

The park gives up new archaeological discoveries by the year.

You can get in touch with this landscape and its human and natural history at the visitor centre, learning about the once full Lake Mungo and the megafauna that lived here.

For an Aboriginal perspective you can take a guided tour, seeing ancient burial sites and fireplaces that have been here for more than 40 millennia.

7. Murray River Cruises

Mildura Riverfront Cruise

The locally-based tour company, Mildura Paddlesteamers maintains a fleet of three historic paddle steamers setting off for cruises on the beautiful Murray River 365 days a year.

The flagship and most active vessel is the P.S. Melbourne, built in 1912 and restored in 1965. Departing Mildura Wharf, this makes twice-daily two-hour cruises, accompanied by commentary and gliding downstream to the iconic Lock 11. This is an all-weather vessel, with heating and glazed indoor spaces, as well as a kiosk for snacks and drinks.

Also in the collection are P.V. Rothbury (1881) and P.V. Mundoo, a replica of an original from 1875, both catering to less frequent lunch, dinner and winery cruises.

8. Mildura Arts Centre

Mildura Arts Centre

The city’s all-encompassing arts hub borders Rio Vista Park on the riverfront.

This modern building houses a 444-seat theatre for live music, plays, dance, talks and children’s fun.

Mildura’s art collection can be seen at curated rotating shows in the centre’s gallery, which also hosts travelling exhibitions.

There’s also a cafe/bar for pre-show refreshments, and the centre is bedded in a gorgeous landscaped sculpture garden.

Under the same umbrella is the nearby Rio Vista Historic House, a three-storey mansion dating back to 1889 and housing more than 1,000 period items.

The property belonged to William Benjamin Chaffey, who was key to introducing modern irrigation systems to Australia.

9. Fossey’s Ginporium and Whisky Distillery

Fossey's Ginporium and Whisky Distillery

The landmark complex, The Setts, on Eighth Street is the home of a family-owned gin distillery and tasting room.

In Fossey’s range of artisanal infused gins you’ll find imaginative creations like Christmas Pudding, Shiraz, Gin Toddy, Rose Petal, Hot Cross Bun, Rose Petal and Desert Lime, along with single malt whisky.

These draw on Mildura’s renowned, high-quality produce, which also shows up on the nibbly food menu provided by The Gourmet Chef, another local business.

The best time to come is Thursday afternoon from 14:00, when the Ginporium is open to people who want to learn the ins and outs of distilling gin and whisky.

Afterwards you can order a tasting paddle to discern the subtle differences between the different infusions.

10. Mildura Holden Motor Museum

Mildura Holden Motor Museum

At this private museum you can trace the history of the Holden car brand, from the late-1940s 48-215 sedan right through to the latest Statesman and Monaro models.

Something remarkable about this collection is that it all belongs to one man, Ron Morello, who opened it up to the public in 2016. There are 30+ models on show at any one time, all pristinely restored and accompanied by a timeline and memorabilia on the walls of this large converted warehouse.

Take a break at the museum’s cafe, adorned with yet more Holden artefacts and serving a menu of sweet treats, hot and cold drinks and quick bites.

11. Orange World

Orange World

This working 20-hectare citrus farm invites guests onto the property for three tours each day, seven days a week.

On this informative experience, you’ll ride on a 70-seater tractor train through the orchard and avocado canopy.

Come during the picking season and Orange World will be full of activity during the rush to harvest, while around September the entire farm is abloom and a sweet fragrance lingers on the air.

Fruit and juice tasting is included in the tour, while there’s an educational talk at the nursery and a lookout tower to survey the orchard.

12. Merbein Common

Merbein Common

This floodplain reserve rests in a meander in Murray River, a little way north-west of Mildura.

Thanks to an enormous state-wide restoration scheme, the nationally important wetlands at Merbein Common are being returned to their original splendour.

The site is also primed for outdoor recreation.

You can hike next to the river, among black box and red gum woodland, and out into open spaces to watch the waterfowl.

There’s a free campsite at the reserve, as well as a boat ramp for fishing or just exploring the wetlands at your own pace.

The river water is as clear as it gets, and you’ll be able to swim at a designated area.

13. Old Wentworth Gaol

Prison Tower at Wentworth Gaol

A little way down the Murray River from Mildura there’s a remarkably preserved 19th-century gaol in the little border town of Wentworth.

This was built between 1879 and 1881, from locally fired brick, with bluestone dressings sourced almost 500 kilometres away in Malmsbury, Victoria.

The gaol served its original purpose until 1927, after which some of it became a school for a few decades.

Throughout, the basic structure and cellblock remained intact, and is now an enlightening museum painting a vivid if spooky picture of life and conditions in a colonial prison.

On a self-guided tour there’s ample information about the story of the building and Wentworth in the late-19th century, explained on mounted boards with lots of black and white photography and historic documents.

14. Woodsies Gem Shop

Woodsies Gem Shop

This outsized, family-run jewelry shop is more than its name suggests, qualifying as a worthwhile tourist attraction, especially if you’re here with your family.

To see the craft of jewelry-making firsthand, there are free grinding and cutting demonstrations daily at 11:00 and 14:00, during which you’ll discover how jewelry is cast and how precious stones are cut and polished.

In the garden Woodsies Gem Shop has a whimsical maze spread out over almost half a hectare, while a real highlight is Aladdin’s Cave, presenting the Woods family’s massive collection of gemstones, crystal and fossils, sourced from across Australia and the world.

15. Sunraysia Farmers’ Market

Sunraysia Farmers' Market

In a region known as “Victoria’s food bowl” you can be sure that the farmers’ markets will be out of this world.

Mildura’s market is held on the first and third Saturday of the month, 08:00 – 12:00 at Jaycee Park on the Murray River.

There you can buy world-class and seasonal fruit and vegetables, but also all sorts of other goodies like farm-raised meat, dried fruits, nuts, potted plants, herbs, wine, sauces, locally roasted coffee, olives, sourdough bread, local chocolate, natural cosmetics and flowers.

As a showcase for all this glorious produce, the market has a volunteer-run stall making delicious breakfast dishes.

Added to that you’ve got cooking demonstration, live music and all kinds of fun to keep children on board.

Mildura - the biggest city in the Mallee, with a population of around 35,000 in Mildura itself, and approximately 80,000 residents in the district (though that figure is somewhat debatable 1 ). We love this place, but then again, perhaps we're biased. We do live here, after all.

From watersports to fine food and wine, glorious sunny weather and riverboat cruises, Mildura has something to please everyone. For us, that means the wonderful climate (as long as you like your summers VERY hot!), the golf courses, the friendly people, and of course, the Murray river right on our doorstep.

Events like the "Dash for Cash" water-ski races, and the Jazz and Country music festival attract big crowds every year (although not 2020... due to Covid of course). No matter what time of year you choose to visit, there will be something going on in the Mildura and Sunraysia district.

25+ Great Things to Do in Mildura

Looking for things to do in mildura i’ve got you covered..

I have driven through Mildura so many times in the last few years, and every time I’ve said “I really need to stay here for a few days and look around”.

It wasn’t going to be my first visit – I had been here with a friend’s family as a teenager and again when my children were very young, but a lot has changed in the twenty or so years since then, and it was time for a revisit.

We stayed for two nights in Mildura as part of a larger trip from Adelaide across to the Snowy Mountains. We were only travelling from Loxton in SA, so had almost two full days to explore.

I had a huge list of things I wanted to do and see, but as usual, the weather gods conspired against me.

No, not rain for a change, this time it was around 40 degrees both days, making it almost impossible to spend much time outside doing the hiking and outdoor exploring I love.

Still, we found more than enough things to keep us busy in that time – in fact, there are still more things to do in Mildura next time we visit.

Top Mildura Attractions

These are the must-do attractions in Mildura that I think everyone should try to fit into their itinerary. Most of them I was able to do, but there were a couple I missed.

Take a Paddle Steamer on the River

A white, double-story paddle steamer at the wharf with a sign on it saying Rothbury Built in 1881

If you lived in Australia in the ’80s, then you probably swooned over Singrid Thornton and John Waters in the mini-series “All the Rivers Run” and wished you could live on a Murray River paddle steamer too.

Well, you can live out those long-held dreams and travel back in time as you cruise the Murray River aboard one of these vintage river vessels. These relaxing river cruises offer a unique perspective on the town and its rich river heritage.

There is a range of cruises available, from a simple two-hour cruise along the river to cruises that include meals, cruises that take you to wineries, or even longer multi-day cruises.

We took the two-hour cruise. Usually, these cruises are on PS Melbourne, but it was on PS Rothbury during our visit.

There are two cruises daily, leaving at 10:50 am and 1:50 pm. Strange times, you may think, but they are so that the boat can make it to Lock 11 just in time to go through it – which is fun to watch if you haven’t done it before (I hadn’t).

Taste the Local Beverages

I was going to just list this as wine tasting, but not everyone loves wine, and there are other options in town, so I think you should put at least one of them one your itinerary

Wine Tasting

A glass with a small amount of wine in it with the words Trentham Estate printed on it. It is being held up in front of a riverbank with a houseboat in the background.

Any area worth its salt in Australia will have at least one winery to visit, and Mildura happens to be right at the heart of the second-largest wine region in the country, the Murray Darling region.

During our visit, we went to the most popular (and closest, which is probably why it’s the most popular) cellar door, which sits just over the river on the NSW side of the border, Trentham Estate.

With a beautiful location on the banks of the river, this is a great spot to try their range of wines, or you can just choose your favourite and sit out on the grassy riverbank and enjoy it.

The best part – the tasting (up to six varieties) is free.

Icy beer taps with various types of beer at a pub. There is a glass of beer sitting on the bar in front of it

The Mildura Brewery & Pub is located right in the centre of town in the historic Astor Theatre, one of Mildura’s beautiful art deco buildings.

We popped in quickly looking for a place to escape the heat for a few minutes and rehydrate before continuing. I’m not a beer drinker, but my husband proclaimed the pale ale to be perfectly drinkable.

It’s not all beer here, there are plenty of other options for the non-beer drinkers out there. I had a wonderfully refreshing (and cold!) virgin mojito.

Gin Distillery

Sadly we did not get to try out Fossey’s Distillery on this visit – simply because we were in town on a Monday and Tuesday, and they are only open Thursday to Sunday.

Fossey’s has a range of delicious-sounding gins, including the intriguing Pepperberry and one of my favourite flavours elsewhere, Desert Lime. For special occasions, you just have to try the Hot Cross Bun or Christmas Pudding gin.

It’s not just gin here though, they also have a range of whisky, vodka and rum – and some rather interesting Outback Moonshine. Who wants to go taste that and report back?

Explore the Streets on Foot

In my opinion, the best way to really get a feel for a place is to spend some time pounding the pavement. Even though it was incredibly hot, we spent some time walking around the city centre to explore.

You could wander aimlessly around the city, or you could wander with a purpose. Here are three ideas to help you explore Mildura by foot.

Midura Street Art

A beautiful mural featuring birds and flowers. Includes a colourful parrot, a wren and a honey-eater.

This is the walk we did – or at least we did the majority of it, then cheated and jumped in the car for some outliers (I think that’s allowed when the footpath was nearly melting our shoes!)

I picked up a list of all the murals in the city centre from the Visitor Information Centre and set off to find them all.

Read more in the Mildura Street Art post

Art Deco Buildings

A large, two-story, art deco building called the Grand Hotel

Another of the things to explore is the incredible art deco architecture Mildura has in buckets. There are some fantastically preserved buildings around, particularly on Langtree & Deakin Avenues.

Again, pick up a brochure from the Visitor Information Centre to get a list of all the buildings, and learn a little about their history as you walk too.

The Riverbank

A mural on the side of a large concrete wall overlooking the Murray River. There is a bridge over the river in the background

Mildura’s Riverbank Precinct is home to a range of attractions and activities, from galleries and cafes, the paddle steamer wharf, water play areas and even Lock 11.

It is also the perfect place for a walk.

Stroll as much or as little as you like, stopping along the way and enjoying the Murray River – which is exactly why Mildura is where it is today.

More Mildura Activities

Once you have ticked those things off the Mildura list, you can spend the rest of the. time on any of these attractions or things to do.

Mildura Riverfront Gallery

Inside a small art gallery with several paintings hanging on the walls, There are also two chairs and a small table in the room

As you walk along the riverfront, duck into the Mildura Riverfront Gallery. This is a lovely little working art space, with some great art on display.

There are over thirty local artists who contribute to the gallery, and most of the artworks are for sale, so you can pick up a unique souvenir of your time on the river.

It was also fun to see several artists at work during our visit, creating and chatting. You may even see one of the workshops in progress as you visit.

The Chaffey Trail

A sign for the Chaffey Trail

The Chaffey Trail will take you to twelve of the most significant historical sites in Mildura. They all contributed to making the area the irrigated oasis it is today, in an otherwise arid part of Australia.

While the area around Mildura was originally settled by the Jamieson brothers in 1847 and officially named Mildura in 1858, it wasn’t until later that the irrigation potential was recognised.

The Chaffey brothers developed an irrigation system in Ontario Canada, and were invited to Australia to do something similar here. They arrived in 1887 and created the Mildura Irrigation Colony.

You will find signboards at each of the twelve sites explaining their significance, and more information at the Visitor Information Centre and on the website .

Mildura Arts Centre & Rio Vista Historic House

The Mildura Arts Centre is the heart of the region’s cultural scene, offering an array of exhibitions and performances.

Next door, the Rio Vista Historic House, once a grand family home, now showcases the history of Mildura through its elegant, preserved interiors )and is part of the Chaffey Trail)

NAP Contemporary

NAP Contemporary is yet another art gallery in Mildura. It’s a space where art comes alive, featuring cutting-edge exhibitions from local and national artists.

Here art enthusiasts and novices alike can immerse themselves in the vibrant contemporary art scene – which is often more interesting to me than traditional art.

Mildura Holden Motor Museum

The outside of a building that houses the Mildura Holden Motor Museum. There is a mural on the side of a Holden panel van, and an old Holden ute is on display

Is there a more iconic Australian car than the Holden? I don’t think so.

The Mildura Holden Motor Museum is a treasure trove of Holden vehicles, displaying a collection that spans the history of this iconic brand.

This is a nostalgic journey through Australia’s automotive heritage, and any car enthusiast will enjoy taking a look.

Etiwanda Wetlands

It was too hot for this during our visit, but I would have loved to explore the Etiwanda Wetlands.

It is an oasis where you can enjoy birdwatching, take peaceful walks, and have the chance to connect with nature not too far from the bustling life of Mildura.

Australian Inland Botanic Gardens

A group of bright red elongated flowers with a black centre still on the small, low, plant.

I had heard mixed reports about the Australian Inland Botanic Gardens, but we had time for an early morning walk before Orange World opened so stopped in.

To the average observer (that is, me!) for the most part it looks like a big patch of native scrub. But there are a few fun things to see and do.

I loved seeing all the Sturt Desert Peas in flower – these are so unique. We made the walk to the Wow Tree, a mallee tree estimated to be 2500 years old, and the nearby shelter with a ceiling made from seedpods

There are many other areas here too, such as the children’s garden and the rose garden, and a cafe and function centre too.

On Saturdays, there is a train tour that runs through the gardens at 11 am, which could be worth taking to learn more.

The River Runs Through Dynamic Art Installation

The River Runs Through Dynamic Art Display presents an immersive experience, unfolding stories and history of the Murray River through visually stunning art installations that engage all of your senses.

Merbein Lookout & Blandowski Stairs

Standing on a clifftop looking down at a flight of wooden steps twisting its way down the the riverbank below

The Merbein Lookout is the highest point in the district and is a great place to take a look at the Murray River from above.

There is a short walk nearby to the Blandowski Stairs which take you down to Chaffey landing on the banks of the river.

It was too hot for us to go down (or rather, for us to climb back up again), but we did enjoy the views of the river.

SRS Benetook Farm

SRS Benetook Farm is described on its Facebook page as a “social enterprise that provides meaningful training & support for people with disabilities.”

For visitors, it’s a great space to enjoy exploring the farm activities, even joining it on activities such as picking strawberries or feeding the chooks.

There is a playground area for kids, including a maze and jumping pillow. Kids will also love the pedal cars, the pet hotel and the vintage Melbourne tram.

SRS Benetook Farm is open 9 am to 4 pm every day.

Fossick for Treasure at Woodsies Gem Shop

At Woodsies Gem Shop, every visitor gets a chance to marvel at the stunning array of gems and minerals on display.

Whether you’re shopping for a unique piece of jewellery or just browsing, Woodsies is a gemstone enthusiast’s paradise.

Get Zesty at Orange World

The entrance to Orange World with large characters made out of citrus fruits

Orange World is a citrus wonderland where you can take guided tours, learn about citrus farming, and sample delicious, fresh produce.

If you are travelling with children, Orange World will be something they will love. It’s an experience that can add a “zesty” twist to your Mildura adventure.

Sadly, we arrived at the stated opening time, and everything was closed. We waited a few minutes, but knowing we already had more to do on our list, we didn’t wait long.

They may have been just a little late opening, or maybe they close on days of extreme heat. Either way, we will have to try again next time we are here.

Look Out for Markets

There are a number of markets that happened periodically in and around Mildura, although sadly (but not surprisingly) none for our Monday/Tuesday visit.

Look out for these:

  • Sunraysia Farmers Market (1st & 3rd Saturday, 8-12)
  • Red Cliff Country Market (1st Sunday)
  • Merbein Markets (3rd Sunday)

Visit Nearby Red Cliffs

A large, historical tractor and trailer on display under a shelter

Take a drive to the town of Red Cliffs, about fifteen minutes from the heart of Mildura.

The Red Cliffs lookout offers breathtaking views over the river and the nearby cliffs. The cliffs’ rich, red hue is especially stunning at sunset, making it a photographer’s dream.

While in town check out Big Lizzie , a huge tractor used in this area to help move timber. Lizzie was built in 1914 and her size is incredible – she’s about 5 metres tall. I barely came up to the top of the wheels.

If you’re here on a Sunday, the Red Cliff Historical Steam Railway runs once or twice a month, so you may be able to jump onboard for a ride.

Learn About Lock 11

Three large panels making up the information boards for Lock 11

Lock 11, part of the Murray River’s irrigation system is not just a feat of engineering but also a picturesque spot for a leisurely walk or a picnic.

We wandered down to take a look and discovered that watching boats navigate the lock is surprisingly captivating.

Take a read of the information boards while you are here and learn about the lock system that is in place right along the Murray River.

Also, take note of the flood levels over the years on the markers near the lock. It’s just incredible to imagine how much water was here.

Shop Until You Drop

A pedestrian mall filled with shady areas and seating

Mildura has the Langtree Mall in the centre of the city which is home to all the standard shops to pick up anything you need.

There are also a few interesting shops in Mildura you may like to check out:

  • Bushells on Tent Ye Olde Lolly Shop
  • Coward’s Cakes (Mildura’s oldest bakery)
  • Santa’s Magical Workshop (May-December, Red Cliff)
  • The Antisocial Collective (streetwear store started here in Mildura)

Day Trips From Mildura

Sadly I did not have time to do any of these day trips this time, but if you are looking to explore further afield, here are some ideas.

Visit Wentworth

We didn’t go to Wentworth on this trip, but I do remember visiting years ago when I was in Mildura. On that trip, we visited the Old Wentworth Gaol , and that’s still one of the top attractions.

The Wentworth Pioneer Museum is home to some full-sized replica megafauna skeletons found nearby as well as over 3000 other local artefacts and exhibits.

Wentworth sits at the junction of the Murray and Darling Rivers which you can view from the viewing platform or by taking a walk through the Junction Island Nature Reserve .

Get active with some sandboarding at the Perry Sandhills , or join a kayak tour with Moontongue Eco Adventures .

Mungo National Park

This will be on my list for sure next time I am in Mildura. I will make sure I stay long enough to do it as I had major FOMO this trip and seriously considered doing a tour rather than spending the time exploring Mildura.

It’s a bit under two hours each way from Mildura, and while you can drive it yourself, I think this would be a good opportunity to jump on a tour. There were many of them advertised all over town – even my accommodation had two different options.

Why a tour? not only does it save you from all the driving, but a guide to this stunning remote landscape will be invaluable.

Mungo is one of only 16 UNESCO sites in Australia and is best known as the home of the Mungo Man & Mungo Woman, which at more than 40000 years, are the oldest human remains found in Australia.

Walpeup Silo Art

Grain silos painted with the images of a soldier, a horse and a galah

We didn’t see the Walpeup silo art while we were in Mildura, but we did pass through on our way back to South Australia.

It’s a little under 90 minutes to drive from Mildura to Walpeup (just over an hour from Red Cliffs), and there isn’t a whole lot more to see in town other than the silo, but if you love seeing the silo art and you have time, why not take a look!

TRAVEL PLANNING ESSENTIALS Find flights – I always use Skyscanner as my starting point when searching for flights. One search will give many options including airlines I may not have thought of. This means I can find the best possible flights to suit my needs Book accommodation – my go to is always Booking.com for the best places to stay. It’s not just hotels anymore, but hostels, apartments, B&Bs and more. I love that the bookings are usually cancellable, and that I can book now and pay later. Hire a rental car – RentalCars.com is my go to here. It allows me to do just one search and it finds cars from many of the different supplies, so no checking multiple websites to compare. Get travel insurance – you would have heard by now that saying “if you can’t afford travel insurance, you can’t afford to travel”. If we’ve learnt anything from the last couple of years it should be how essential travel insurance is. I use CoverMore for my insurance. Pick up an eSIM – I tried an eSIM on my last trip and it was fantastic. I set it up before I went so it was ready as soon as I landed, and I still had access to my home number for emergencies. Get your own eSIM at Airalo . Book activities, tours & attractions – I use a few different websites for this. Viator and Get Your Guide tend to be the first places I look. In Asia, Klook often has more options, and in Australia it’s Experience Oz . Manage your money – the best way to manage your different currencies is with an account from Wise . You can hold money in many different currencies, and use them with the ATM card or from your phone.

The Ultimate Travel Guide to Mildura

  • getting there
  • eat & drink
  • destinations

An unassuming city in regional Victoria (population: over 70,000), Mildura doesn’t get nearly the amount of attention it deserves. Here you’ll find foodie and drinks experiences to rival those of a major city (it’s known as the centre of Victoria’s Food Bowl), as well as dozens of activities that take advantage of its location on the banks of the Murray River, as well as a short driving distance (1.5 hours) from World Heritage-listed Mungo National Park. Swing by its cellar doors for wine tastings, get competitive at go-karts or putt-putt or hire a houseboat, kayak or canoe to see its Riverfront by water. Whether it’s nature, adventure or good food and wine you’re after, Mildura has the scenery, activities and eateries to suit.

Getting to Mildura

Mildura is a six-hour drive from Melbourne, a 10.5-hour drive from Sydney and a 4.5-hour drive from Adelaide. The city has its own airport with direct flights from Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide. Not keen to drive?  V/Line  has an overnight coach from Melbourne to Mildura, leaving from Southern Cross Station, as well as a train service from Melbourne to Swan Hill Station that then transfers to coach.

Best time to visit Mildura

While summers in Mildura can get hot (the average temperature is 26 degrees) and winters can get pretty chilly (average is 10 degrees), overall the climate here is dry with clear skies. Come in autumn to see the fall foliage. Or time your visit to coincide with one of the city’s festivals,  Mildura Summer Festival  and  Mildura Writers Festival .

Mildura is a mid-sized regional city in Sunraysia , Victoria with a population of 56,972 (2021).

Understand [ edit ]

Mildura is on the Murray River in the northwest corner of Victoria . The region's population of 52,000 (2018) is growing at around 1.5% annually.

Mildura and the surrounding area is a large fruit growing region. Local produce includes most varieties of citrus, grapes, avocados and almonds. The quality of local produce and the growing wine industry have helped Mildura develop a reputation for great food and wine . Mildura has become popular with backpackers drawn by the availability of farm work.

Get in [ edit ]

By plane [ edit ], by train [ edit ].

The Mildura train station is on the corner of Langtree Avenue and 7th St. No passenger trains arrive or depart from Mildura.

By bus [ edit ]

The bus station is next to the train station. Buses to and from Melbourne depart daily and also run direct to Swan Hill (2½ hours) or Bendigo (6 hours) to connect with train services. The entire journey from Melbourne takes 7½ hours via Swan Hill, 8 hours via Bendigo or 10 hours direct from Melbourne.

Mildura is on the daily bus route from Adelaide to Sydney (via Canberra ). Local buses also connect Mildura with surrounding smaller towns.

By car [ edit ]

From Melbourne the journey time is 6-7 hours along the Calder Highway. Journey time from Adelaide is 4.5-5 hours. From Sydney you will be travelling via Wagga Wagga and Hay , and be prepared for a long straight drive through the Murray Outback for the best part of 12 hours (not allowing for breaks). Best to allow at least two days. The roads in and out of Mildura are generally uninteresting, and dotted with small towns with little to see or do. Be prepared for a long and potentially boring drive.

Get around [ edit ]

Map

Local buses connect Mildura with surrounding smaller towns. Buses run on weekdays during business hours between Ransoms (Deakin Avenue & Eighth Street) and Centro (Deakin Avenue & Fifteenth Street) every half hour. For most attractions a car is necessary - major rental companies operate from the airport. Mildura is largely flat, making it ideal for cycling - several trails run around the city and along the river. Bicycle Hire is available from a local bike shop.

Driving to Wentworth takes around 30 minutes, but by bus it can take 1.5 hours.

Buy [ edit ]

  • Some superb Murray pink salt from the visitor centre. These salts also help farmers who have lost their fertile soil to salinity problems.
  • Local dried fruit produce from the Australian Dried Fruits Association on Deakin Avenue.
  • Locally grown fruit and veggies such as oranges, grapes, avocados, mandarins, rockmelon, watermelon, tomatoes, mulberries, and onions from the roadside stalls. All stalls have an 'honesty box' system and charge very reasonable rates well below local supermarkets. Local Coles & Woolworths supermarkets may buy their produce locally, but they are not permitted by company policy to negotiate their own price with growers. The supermarkets also end up having to buy their fruit from local growers at wholesale markets in Adelaide or Melbourne, meaning the carbon footprint is massive after two approx. 5-hour trips in B Double trucks, and fruit at supermarkets is not as fresh as you would expect.
