Oppdal is a municipality in central Norway, between Oslo and Trondheim. The region is surrounded by two natural highlights, the Dovrefjell and Trollheimen mountain ranges, which hold many of the area’s best adventures.
In the south, Dovrefjell–Sunndalsfjella National Park is home to Norway’s lone population of musk oxen. Mountain reindeer and moose can also be spotted in the area. Towering above all is Snøhetta, the highest mountain in Norway outside of Jotunheimen National Park.
To the north, Trollheimen offers one of Norway’s most well-known hikes, Trekanten. Gjevilvasshytta, a serviced cabin along the route, is considered by some to be Norway’s prettiest tourist cabin.
An extensive trail network winds its way through the whole region and with so many mountains, hikers seeking views are rarely disappointed. Mountain bikers are increasingly flocking to the area and during the warmer months rafting on the Driva river is a thrilling way to spend a day.
Oppdal is central Norway’s premier winter destination. In the winter and spring the mountains hovering above the region’s valleys are renowned for wonderful ski touring. Oppdal is also home to a large alpine ski center and many kilometers of groomed cross-country trails.
In Oppdal village, the compact center has everything required for a comfortable stay. There are an array of hotels, shops, cafés and restaurants. For self-caterers, there are several supermarkets and a Vinmonopolet.
Oppdal is located about 2 hours from Trondheim and 5–6 hours from Oslo, on the main highway and railway line between the two cities.
The best time to visit Oppdal
Oppdal offers plenty of reasons to visit regardless of the season. For skiers, hikers, and bikers, the Dovrefjell and Trollheimen mountain ranges are perfect for discovering adventures in the mountains.
The true beginning and end of the seasons varies depending on snowfalls and general weather conditions. The Norwegian national weather service provides detailed weather reports and forecasts for Oppdal in English.
During winter Oppdal has 180 km of cross-country trails, a sizeable alpine ski center, and countless ski touring opportunities. The first snow arrives in November and it’s possible to take summit trips right into spring.
The skiing season is long in Oppdal and in April and May it becomes a ski touring paradise. With the right weather it can be possible to ski in the mountains one day and hike in the valleys the next. Long, bright days hint that summer is coming.
The popular musk ox safaris begin in mid-June. As July rolls around, the hiking season really kicks into gear with the high mountains calling. The trails have dried and are also suitable for mountain biking. Rafting, canyoning and ziplining are all possible.
Hiking and biking in fall brings a new perspective with stunning foliage in shades of orange and gold. Berry picking is a popular past time.

The Pilgrim Path
Hiking in the footsteps of pilgrims in classic mountain landscape over Dovrefjell. Experience exciting cultural monuments, rich mountain flora and views of several famous rock formations. The Pilgrim Path over Dovrefjell is one of the most popular stretches of the old hiking route from Oslo to Trondheim and Nidaros Cathedral. If you walk the entire distance over Dovrefjell, you pass four old mountain lodges that have welcomed pilgrims and other travelers over many centuries. The section of the route over Dovrefjell mainly follows the old thoroughfare over the mountains, the old King’s Road.
The King’s Road over Dovrefjell
A walk along The King’s Road can provide many new experiences and discoveries for each individual hiker, but the perpetual mountain landscape that surrounds the road can also provide many of the same experiences of nature. It is said that Prince Christian Frederik became so fascinated by the mountains that he began walking towards Snøhetta when he traveled over the mountains in 1814. Similarly, Vinje describes how travelers talk about the mountain as being “so magnificently beautiful”, and writes about Snøhetta mountain as he observes it from The King’s Road over Hjerkinnhø. When walking along The King’s Road over Hjerkinnhø today, one can feel the same attraction towards the majestic Snøhetta mountain and Svånåtindan mountain to the west. A hike along The King’s Road can provide experiences that are beyond time and space, and in that way the road creates connecting lines between past and present travelers.
The King’s Road over Hjerkinnhø, 7 km
Starting points for the trip are at Jøroskloppa (parking next to E6) and Hjerkinn Fjellstue. Visitors are able to reach the highest point (Hjerkinnhø, 1210 masl) from both places and experience great views of Rondane, Snøhetta mountain and Drivdalen valley. If you keep your eyes peeled, it is possible to discover many historical and cultural monuments along The King’s Road over Hjerkinnhø, such as culverts, guard stones and stone obelisks.
The King’s Road over Vårstigen, 9 km
Vårstigen is the most famous stretch along The King’s Road. The trip offers some rather exposed sections with high dry stone walls and several vantage points from which to view the beautiful Drivdalen valley. The starting point for the trip is either Gammelholet, Nestasvollan or Hesthåggån. The stretch between Gammelholet (southern parking) to Nestasvollan is 6 km. From Nestasvollan to Hesthåggån is 3 km.
All sections are suitable for children and young hikers. Read more at The King’s Road over Dovrefjell website
Cycling trips
The drotningsdals trail.

You can also drive up Vinstradalsvegen and park about 350 meters past the junction where the Drotningdals Trail continues southwards.
Dindalshytta – Åmotsdalen
Do you like trail biking? If so, you can cycle between Dindalen valley and Åmotsdalen valley in Oppdal. Follow the track from Dindalshytta cabin to Søndre Snøfjellstjønna, and continue on the trail/cart road into Åmotsdalen valley. There is a signposted exit to Dindalshytta cabin from the RV70 at Lønset. There is a signposted exit to Åmotsdalen valley from the E6 at Engan.
