Peebles – a guide for visiting this lovely Scottish Borders town in 2023
The Scottish Borders is full of lovely towns and villages to visit, and we definitely think Peebles is one of the best. Set against the amazing backdrop of the Tweed Valley, this town is packed with cute little cafes, interesting history, and excellent independent shops. Plus, it's less than an hour away from Edinburgh. We decided to publish a guide about this town to outline the best things to see and do during your time here, all updated for 2023. Let's get into the guide:
Glentress Forest
Visit the war memorial
Explore the cafes
Explore the independent shops
Check out the Macdougall Footbridge
Walk along "The Cuddy"
The John Buchan Story
This museum celebrates the life and works of John Buchan, one of Scotland's most famous authors and the man behind 'The 39 Steps'. You might not be familiar with the book, but if you get a chance to read it before your trip to Peebles then we highly recommend you do. If you don't have time for an entire novel then the 1935 film is an absolute classic which is still very watchable today. It's a small museum and entry is free, but if you're a fan of Buchan you will find it utterly charming and fascinating. Learn more here - johnbuchanstory.co.uk
Explore the Tweed Valley
Visit the Peebles Old Parish Church
Admire the signs
Get involved in the Tweed Valley Trail Run
Visit Stobo Castle
Cycle to Traquair House
Traquair House - the oldest inhabited house in Scotland - is approximately 8 miles from the centre of Peebles, a distance which might be a little too far away for walking but which can easily be reached by bike. We'd definitely say that if you've got the time and the energy, a cycle to Traquair House is highly recommended as it's a very interesting place to visit. The restaurant here is also excellent and a lovely place to get some food after your cycle.
There are 2 main cycling routes you can follow from Peebles to Traquair House, and we've created a Google Map for both of them. This route takes you via the A72, and this route takes you via the B7062. Happy cycling!
Hopefully, this guide has inspired you to visit this excellent town! If you enjoyed this guide, we have guides about other areas within the Scottish Borders, including Melrose . We also have guides about walking routes within the Scottish Borders, including the Borders Abbeys Way , and the Southern Upland Way .

Peebles is a town in the Scottish Borders , with a population in 2020 of 9000. The name is Brythonic: pebyll meant "tents" or a temporary dwelling place. It's a market town and had a textile industry, which (as in other Borders towns) collapsed in the 1960s. It became a byword for provincial tranquility: to say that somewhere was "like Peebles on a Sunday" was not necessarily a compliment. It's nowadays a commuter town for Edinburgh. The main reason to visit is Traquair House, and to walk the nearby hills and forests.

The historic core of Peebles - the Old Town lies to the west of the junction of the River Tweed and Eddleston Water.
By the reign of King David I (1124-53) Peebles was already a Royal Burgh. King William I (1165-1214) The Lion", confirmed that the two chief courts of justice were to be held annually either in Edinburgh or Peebles. During the Wars of independence, King Edward I of England visited Peebles in 1301 and 1306. Edward appointed his man - William de Dureme - sheriff in place of Sir Simon Fraser of Neidpath, who had joined with William Wallace in his attempt to free Scotland. In the 15th and 16th centuries many visits were made to the town by the monarchy, King James III in particular was a frequent visitor. Peebles was relatively untouched by the conflicts - both internal and external - that characterised life in the Borders at that time. There were however three major events in the 16th century. In late 1549. Peebles was almost completely razed by the English: in April 1585 the population of the Borders was directed by King James VI to meet at Peebles in May in an attempt to halt the “crimes committed on the borders” i.e- the reiving or cross border raids and, from 1650-51, Cromwell‘s Army occupied the town. The 18th century was not a good time for Peebles as poverty and hunger were common in the Burgh. ln 1741, 1774 and again in 1783 the council found it necessary to purchase food for the inhabitants. The Industrial Revolution did not immediately affect Peebles and recovery from these dark years was slow. The 19th century was a time of progress from a poor start when the town was described in 1801 as being "stagnant and almost lifeless", due in no small way to the privations of the previous century. The arrival of the Railway in 1855 brought an increase in trade and the growth of industry brought a deal of prosperity and expansion. In the 20th century, the increased ownership of the motor car after the Second World War, led to an improved road network and the line closed in 1962. Today, Peebles is the third largest town in the Borders and occupies both banks of the River Tweed. The road network enables people to travel easily to Edinburgh or elsewhere in the Borders. Through all the changes of recent years. Peebles still retains its historic layout and there is much to interest the visitor. Please allow at least 19 minutes to complete it, excluding the time taken to enjoy the destinations along the way.
