Singapore may be one of the most expensive countries in the world to live in, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of free things to do that are fun and meaningful ways to experience the city.

We’ve rounded up our favorite cultural, historic and outdoor freebies – a little something for everyone.

1. Enjoy Sentosa’s beaches and trails

Spending a day on the resort island of Sentosa with its theme parks and casino can be an expensive affair, but there are a surprising amount of free activities for a budget day out. Bask in the tropical weather on any of the island’s three lovely white sand beaches, stroll through historical bunkers and exhibits about WWII at Fort Siloso and enjoy an 11-story view of the southern coast from the Siloso Skywalk.

Local tip: The Sentosa Express monorail is a cheap and convenient way to enter the island at just $4, but if you walk across the Sentosa Boardwalk and catch the island’s internal shuttle buses, it’s completely free.

2. Watch free arts performances at the Esplanade

Recognizable thanks to its unusual spiky durian-like rooftops, the Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay is Singapore’s national performing arts center and one of the busiest in the world, hosting frequent free dance, music and theater showcases evenings and weekends. Its outdoor waterfront theater is particularly scenic, set against the backdrop of Marina Bay.

3. Capture Singapore’s iconic skyline at Marina Bay

Get that postcard-worthy shot of Singapore – for free – by strolling around the scenic Marina Bay, especially pretty at night when the city lights are out in full force. Marvel at some of Singapore’s most iconic architecture here: the three towers of Marina Bay Sands , the swirling spirals of the Helix Bridge and the spouting half-lion half-fish Merlion statue .

Planning tip : There is a 15-minute Spectra show with projections, lasers and dancing fountains every evening on the waterfront in front of Marina Bay Sands. There are two shows at 8pm and 9pm on weekdays and an additional 10pm show on Friday and Saturday.

4. Get up close with the Supertrees at Gardens by the Bay

While the Flower Dome and Cloud Forest observatories, the Floral Fantasy Supertree Observatory and OCBC Skyway walk require admission tickets, you can actually see a lot of Gardens by the Bay for free. There are several outdoor gardens with different landscapes and art sculptures to check out, as well as the famous alien-like Supertrees.

Planning tip: Swing by the Supertree Grove in the evenings just before 7:45pm and 8:45pm every night to catch Garden Rhapsody , a spectacular 15-minute light and sound show amidst the Supertrees. If you catch the 8pm Spectra show, you can take a slow stroll over to Gardens by the Bay with time to spare for the 8:45pm Garden Rhapsody show.

5. Trace the historic Singapore River

The mouth of the Singapore River was once the heart of trade and the spot from which modern-day Singapore grew after the British set up port here in 1819. You could pay to ride one of the bumboats that transported goods along the river, but it’s more fun (and free) to walk along its river banks.

The warehouses of Boat Quay and Clarke Quay have been turned into restaurants and clubs in bustling nightlife districts, while former government offices like the Victoria Theatre and Concert Hall and Asian Civilisations Museum  are now heritage architecture. Keep an eye out for the many bridges that span the river as well – Anderson Bridge, Cavenagh Bridge and Elgin Bridge are gazetted National Monuments.

6. Relive the old days in Chinatown

You can learn plenty about how the early Chinese settlers once lived while wandering the streets of Singapore’s Chinese heritage district, Chinatown. Look out for wall murals around the neighborhood by local artist Yip Yew Chong that depict his memories growing up in Singapore in the 1970s.

Several important temples are located here and can be visited for free – the five-story Buddha Tooth Relic Temple is rich in finery and apparently home to the Buddha’s left canine, while Thian Hock Keng , dedicated to sea goddess Mazu, is one of the oldest Chinese temples in Singapore. Chinatown Complex Food Centre is also the largest hawker center in Singapore and the best place to pick up a cheap meal in the area.

7. Invigorate your senses in Little India

Colorful Little India, the epicenter of the South Indian population in Singapore, is a fascinating place for a stroll. Pop by the Tekka Centre early in the morning for a glimpse of daily life, or pay a visit to the Hindu Sri Veerakaliamman Temple with its intricate decorations.

The rainbow-hued Tan Teng Niah House is a popular spot for Instagrammers looking for that perfect shot, but keep an eye out for murals around the neighborhood that evoke the area’s unique history, like the buffalo that were tended by early Indian settlers here and the horse racing track that gave Race Course Road its name.

8. Marvel at the mix of cultures in Kampong Gelam

The former Malay and Arab quarter is one of Singapore’s oldest neighborhoods, and today it's a gentrified hip hangout. Most people make a beeline for hip Haji Lane nearby with its traditional shophouses and colorful shopfronts, but you’ll find plenty of murals all around this area – Gelam Gallery in the back alleys in front of the mosque is a good place to start, and you’ll find graffiti and art galleries around Aliwal Arts Centre and Sultan Art Village too.

And don't miss the majestic Sultan Mosque with its twin golden onion-shaped domes – enter outside of prayer time to better appreciate its architecture from inside as well as outside.

People enjoying a walk on the canopy walkway in the Southern Ridges.

9. Walk the Southern Ridges for lofty views

Some of the best views of Singapore’s skyline can be seen along the Southern Ridges , a 10km trail that stretches from the country’s second-highest hill,  Mount Faber , to the historic Kent Ridge Park . Highlights along the route include the Henderson Waves (the tallest pedestrian bridge in Singapore), the majestic Alexandra Arch, elevated canopy walks and the manicured gardens of HortPark .

10. Visit the Botanic Gardens, Singapore’s first Unesco heritage site

Inscribed as a Unesco World Heritage Site in 2015, the Botanic Gardens are the first (and currently only) tropical gardens on the list. These lush gardens sit surprisingly close to the Orchard Road shopping stretch and are perfect for those who need a break from city life. Most of the gardens are free to enter except for the National Orchid Garden .

11. Explore the mangrove forests of Sungei Buloh Nature Reserve

Nature lovers can enjoy a hike in any of Singapore’s public parks for free, but if you only have time for one, make a trip to the remotely located Sungei Buloh Nature Reserve in northwestern Singapore. Bird watchers will appreciate the many migratory birds that can be found here, along with the rich biodiversity in its varied mangrove forests, mudflats and tropical rainforests.

Planning tip: Buy a $5 pass to ride the Kranji Farms Shuttle on weekends and you can also visit Singapore’s rare remaining farms nearby after exploring the nature reserve.

Family looking at work at the National Museum of Singapore

12. Check out Singapore’s free museums

Singaporeans and permanent residents generally enjoy free or discounted tickets at most museums, but a handful offer free entry to everyone regardless of nationality. With over 8000 artifacts and artworks about Singapore's development, the  NUS Museum  is great for historians, while the Urban Redevelopment Authority’s Singapore City Gallery offers a great bird’s eye view and scale model of the city’s growth.

Local tip:  Even if you aren’t planning to pay for an admission ticket to the art galleries, you can walk through the National Gallery Singapore building for free to admire the restored colonial architecture of the former City Hall and Supreme Court.

13. Hang out at Changi Airporta

Have some time to kill before catching your flight home? Spend some time at Changi Airport. The 40m-tall Rain Vortex in the Jewel extension is the tallest indoor waterfall in the world, and the surrounding greenery of the Forest Valley makes for a great photo backdrop. There is a light and sound show every hour in the evening from 7:30pm -11:30pm.

The freebies don’t stop after check in. In the transit area, there are several gardens to wander, free 24-hour movie theaters and TV lounges, and transit passengers with at least 5.5 hours to spare can even take a free short tour of Singapore.

Local tip: Sign up for the free Changi Rewards membership and you can ride the four-story-tall Slide@T3 up to ten times, along with other perks if you plan to shop at the airport.

While you're at it, check out the luxe yachts docked at the marina.

Cross the oldest bridge in Singapore

Cross the oldest bridge in Singapore

The title of 'the oldest bridge in Singapore that exists in its original form' is none other than Cavenagh Bridge. The city's only suspension bridge links the Civic District on the northern bank to the Commercial District on the southern bank of the Singapore River.  Built in 1869, it was originally named Edinburgh Bridge after the Duke of Edinburgh’s visit. But it later became Cavenagh when it was named after the last India-appointed Governor of the Straits Settlement, Sir Orfeur Cavenagh. The Cavenagh coat of arms and original signages still stand at each end of the bridge that's still used by pedestrians. Based on the vintage police notices that are still up, no vehicles – even cattle and horses – are allowed to cross to this date.

Reconnect with nature at Punggol Waterway Park

If you're feeling ambitious and adventurous, journey through some of the best parks and nature reserves in Singapore like Bukit Batok Nature Park, MacRitchie Reservoir, Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park, and Singapore Botanic Gardens. Keep your eyes peeled for quarry lakes, parts of an old cemetery, and rustic forests along the way. Roads including Arcadia Road, Mount Pleasant Road, Mandai Road, South Buona Vista Road, and Lim Chu Kang Road are lined with mature trees that form the backbone of the city's landscape and are a result of over 40 years of dedicated care and growth.

Be a bookworm at National Library

Be a bookworm at National Library

  • 5 out of 5 stars
  • Literary events

With a central borrowing library, reference library and a digital library in tow, National Library aims to be more than just a place for book-reading. Showered with architectural awards before it had even opened, the building is designed as two towers, linked by walkways and walled almost entirely with glass. Head to level 11 for its latest permanent exhibition, The News Gallery: Beyond Headlines. The exhibition is divided into five zones and features original copies of Singapore's earliest newspapers – even those from the 1820s – and a fun, fake news-busting game for the whole family.

Soak your feet at Sembawang Hot Spring Park

Soak your feet at Sembawang Hot Spring Park

The hot spring in Sembawang is a peculiar attraction in Singapore. First discovered back in 1909, the hot spring was popular with villagers who believed that the water had healing powers. Later on in 1922 when the site was acquired by soft drinks giant Fraser & Neave (F&N), the water was bottled and sold to the public. And during the Japanese Occupation, the place was converted into thermal onsen baths. It finally underwent a major facelift and r eopened in January this year. The new Sembawang Hot Spring Park is where visitors can learn about the history and geology of the place, reminisce about the old kampung days by strolling through the fruit trees and edible plants, and of course soak their feet in hot waters at the pool or the wooden basins provided.

Slide your way down Admiralty Park

Slide your way down Admiralty Park

  • Playgrounds

Take a wild ride down any one of the 26 slides at Admiralty Park located on hilly terrain with Sungei Cina river running through it. Don’t mistake it for just any regular park, it's fitted with unique slide designs and is loosely separated into three main play areas: Junior Play, Adventure Play, and Family Terracing Play. The young and the young-at-heart can slide down The Curved Roller Slide, a 34-metre-long outdoor slide lined with black tubes similar to that of a conveyor belt for easy sliding. Besides the slides, there’s an inclusive playground fitted with a wheelchair swing and merry-go-round to support play between children with and without needs.

Go fishing at Bedok Reservoir

Go fishing at Bedok Reservoir

It is no wonder that Bedok Reservoir is one of the most popular fishing sites for the locals – especially the Easterners. In this nine metre deep reservoir, expect to catch many non-natives of Singapore, such as the African Walking Catfish, Armoured Sucker Catfish, Peacock Bass and Tarpon. As it is a reservoir, do try to use artificial bait only – as to not contaminate the water quality.

Stroll past the colouful shophouses in Katong

Stroll past the colouful shophouses in Katong

The main star of Joo Chiat and Katong? The rows of vibrant shophouses. Take a jaunt down Koon Seng Road where you’ll find the popular eye-candies adorned in ceramic Peranakan floral motifs, geometrical tiles, pastel hues and even Chinese couplets which are said to bring good fortune.  While you can’t photograph its interiors,  Rumah Bebe  has eye-catching cerulean exteriors and bright Peranakan tiles that your ‘gram desperately needs. For something less in-your-face, take a stroll down Lotus @ Joo Chiat, a stretch of 18 white conserved shophouses with green windows and doors with intricate carvings.

There's also the Changi Experience Studio featuring a number of interactive games that illustrate the work it takes to get Changi Airport working like clockwork.

Enjoy the bizarre world of Haw Par Villa

Enjoy the bizarre world of Haw Par Villa

This little theme park of horrors is both terrifying and impressive at the same time. Multi-coloured statues and tableaux depict scenes from Chinese history and mythology in bright, gaudy colours, making it look more menacing than they should. Light show at Gardens by the Bay.

Singapore is known for being an expensive city to visit. So, in this article, we wanted to look at some activities that can actually be done for free. If you’re visiting Singapore on a budget , then this article is for you.

I’m not going to lie, most tourist attractions in Singapore are expensive. And so visiting several of the big attractions (eg. Universal Studios , SEA Aquarium , Singapore Zoo ) during your trip soon adds up.

But the good news is, there are a few free attractions that you can take advantage of, to help keep your budget in check. Here are a few of our favourites:

Table of Contents

Gardens by the Bay

One of Singapore’s most famous tourist attractions, Gardens by the Bay , is in fact free! Well, some of it is free.

Gardens by the bay skywalk.

Unfortunately you do need to buy tickets for some of the main attractions within Gardens by the Bay. This includes the Cloud Forest, Flower Dome, OCBC Skyway and the Supertree Observatory.

BUT – it is completely free to enter the rest of the Gardens. And there are plenty of beautiful park areas, lakes, wetlands and photo spots to access.

Even the famous light show at Supertree Grove, Garden Rhapsody, can be enjoyed for free . Watch it every evening at 7.45pm and 8.45pm

Here are our favourite free attractions within Gardens by the Bay :

  • Supertree Grove – yes you can visit those iconic super trees for free! You may have to pay to walk the skyway or go up into the observatory, but walking around and admiring those mammoth structures is 100% FREE!
  • Far East Organisation’s Children’s Garden – if you are visiting Singapore with kids , be sure to pop their swimmers in the bag when you visit Gardens by the Bay. They will love splashing around in this awesome water play area.
  • Dragon & Kingfisher Lakes – a great spot for insta-worthy photos of the super trees and Marina Bay Sands.
  • Heritage Gardens – a history and cultural lesson told through plants.
  • World of Plants – to learn all about the spectacular myriad of tropical plants and the eco-systems they support.

Fort Siloso

One of Singapore’s best museums is actually FREE!

Singapore’s only preserved coastal fort that played a significant role in the country’s coastal defence during the war. This historic site on Sentosa Island is now home to a popular museum.

WWII exhibition at Fort Siloso.

At Fort Siloso , you’ll encounter well-preserved WWII-era guns, vibrant murals, and interactive exhibits, together with waxwork models and motion-triggered recordings. All offer insights into the fort’s operations and its significance in the defence of Singapore.

I nsider Tip:  While you’re here, check out the Fort Siloso Skywalk, an 11-storey high treetop walk that offers panoramic views of the fort and surrounding areas (also free).

Botanic Gardens

Singapore’s Botanic Gardens is just a 15-minute walk from the top of Orchard Road and is one of the most beautiful places in Singapore.

Waterfall at Singapore Botanic Gardens.

This UNESCO World Heritage site offers a huge variety of beautiful park areas, including some of the oldest primary rainforest in Singapore.

You’ll find lakes, fountains, sculpture gardens and plenty of well-manicured lawns to kick back on and enjoy the view.

If you’re visiting with kids, be sure to check out the  Jacob Ballas Children’s Garden . This has several learning areas, in addition to a fun tree house with a slide and a water play area.

Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum

There aren’t many free museums in Singapore for tourists, but the Buddhist Cultural Museum inside the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple is one of them.

Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum Singapore.

This excellent museum holds a unique collection of Buddhist artefacts from various parts of Asia and also teaches you the life story of the Buddha.

The museum is housed within Chinatown’s largest Buddhist temple , built to hold the Sacred Buddha Tooth and Relics. All parts of the temple are free to enter.

There are five floors plus a roof garden to explore, including the Ten Thousand Buddhas Pavilion on the roof.

Southern Ridges Walk

The Southern Ridges Walk comprises 10 kilometres of trails that connect five of Singapore’s national parks: Mount Faber Park, Labrador Nature Reserve, Kent Ridge Park, HortPark and Telok Blangah Hill Park.

Southern Ridges Walk.

It’s a popular trail with local runners and joggers and really exemplifies the juxtaposition of the real jungle and the urban jungle that is so unique to Singapore.

As you walk through sections of secondary rainforest, you will be reminded that you are never far from urban development. The sounds of cicadas mingle with traffic noise and apartment blocks tower above the rainforest canopy.

One of the highlights is the Henderson Waves, a very cool pedestrian bridge. This architectural masterpiece has an undulating wave-like structure and curved steel ‘ribs’ and is a great spot for photos.

Insider Tip: The Henderson Waves is a great spot to watch sunset, where you can enjoy views over the urban sprawl and out towards Sentosa.

MacRitchie Treetop Walk

MacRitchie Reservoir Park is one of the best places to go hiking in Singapore, with its its rich rainforest environment and well-signposted trails.

MacRitchie Treetop Walk.

There are several boardwalk treks and more rugged forest trails around the reservoir, varying in length from 3km to 11km.

The highlight is the TreeTop Walk , a free-standing 250m long suspension bridge that gives you a bird’s eye view of the rainforest canopy from its 25m high position.

Keep your eyes peeled for Long Tailed Macaques, Monitor Lizards, White-bellied Fish-eagles and an abundance of butterflies and birds along the way.

Insider Tip: The Treetop Walk is reached via the Blue trail, which is a 10.5km round trip from the MacRitchie Reservoir Park. You can also reach it via a slightly shorter 7km walk, (the Orange trail) from the Venus Drive car park.

Jewel Rain Vortex

It has become one of Singapore’s most iconic sights, but the Jewel HSBC Rain Vortex at Changi Airport is completely free to visit.

Jewel Rain Vortex.

You are bound to have seen social media posts of the HSBC Rain Vortex, the world’s largest indoor waterfall. It’s a sight to behold and a must-snap for your Instagram page.

Within the Jewel complex, you’ll find plenty of shopping and dining options too, to suit every budget.

Gelam Gallery

Singapore’s first outdoor art gallery can be found in the back lanes of the Kampong Gelam district .

Gelam Gallery Singapore.

Once reserved for deliveries and garbage disposal, the laneways behind Muscat Street are now home to murals and framed art from over 30 artists, both local and international.

Instagrammers, get snapping!

Haw Par Villa

Haw Par Villa is a strange and surreal statue garden located in the West of Singapore. The park dates back to 1937, when it was built by Aw Boon Haw, one of the brothers behind the Tiger Balm empire.

Statue at Haw Par Villa Singapore.

Here, you’ll find hundreds of multi-coloured statues and tableaux depicting Chinese myths and legends. It’s perfect for fun photos!

Unfortunately, the infamous 10 Courts of Hell are now part of the pay-to-enter Hell’s Museum, but the rest of the park remains free.

Spectra Light Show

Garden Rhapsody at Gardens by the Bay isn’t the only light show in Singapore. There’s another that takes place at Marina Bay Sands every night.

Spectra light show at Marina Bay Sands.

Spectra, a light and water show is a 15-minute extravaganza of choreographed  fountain jets, colourful visual projections, lasers, lava and mist effects, all set to an orchestral soundtrack.

To watch, head to the Event Plaza in front of Marina Bay Sands every evening at 8pm and 9pm, plus 10pm on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Art lovers rejoice, the  NUS Museum  at the National University of Singapore is a wonderful art gallery and it’s completely free to enter.

The gallery’s diverse collections range from classical Chinese and Indian materials to modern and contemporary Southeast Asian and Singaporean art.

With a comprehensive collection of over 8,000 artefacts and artworks in its permanent collections, it also hosts temporary exhibitions, meaning there is always something new to see here.

Explore the neighbourhoods

Exploring Singapore’s neighbourhoods on foot costs nothing and is one of the best ways to soak in the vibe of the city.

Chinatown shop houses

Chinatown , Little India , Kampong Gelam and the Civic District are all perfect for exploring on foot. You’ll find plenty of impressive architecture, temples, interesting alleyways and street murals along the way.

Our guide to the most Instragrammable spots in Singapore has plenty of free places to visit to get that perfect holiday snap too.

Insider Tip: Our self-guided walking tours cost just $9 each (or $21 for three) and are a cheap way to get an insider’s guide to each area. Check them out here .

Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve

Set in 130 hectares of mangroves, mudflats, ponds and secondary forests, the  Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve  is known as one of the best spots in Singapore to see abundant birdlife.

Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve

This peaceful oasis is particularly popular during the migratory season of September to March, when huge flocks of shorebirds, such as Egrets, Sandpipers and Plovers visit the Reserve. There are observation hides set up for keen bird enthusiasts to get a better view.

The reserve is also home to an amazing diversity of other interesting plants and animals, So keep a look out for otters, monitor lizards and crocodiles while you’re here.

Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery

The largest monastery in Singapore is home to one of Asia’s largest indoor Buddhist statues.

Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery.

This enormous statue of the bodhisattva Guan Yin is made from bronze, measures 45 feet in height, and weighs several tons. It’s an impressive sight.

The grounds are extensive and it’s a great spot to spend some quiet, reflective moments. Be sure to track down the Boddhi tree, said to be a descendent of the sacred Bodhi Tree where Shakyamuni Buddha attained enlightenment.

18 Free and Cheap Things to Do in Singapore

the skyline of Singapore lit up at night

Singapore is an expensive place to visit. There’s no way around it. The small city state is priced relative to the United States , which is a lot more expensive than its neighbors!

On a small stop-over trip, this isn’t a problem.

But on a big trip through the region, a trip into Singapore can elicit sticker shock, and it can turn people away if they’re trying to travel the area on the cheap. If you still want to visit this country, though, there are many ways to travel around Singapore on a budget.

Singapore has many free and cheap things to do when you visit so you can make the most of this big city!

Here’s a list of my favorite cheap and free things to do in Singapore!

Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice is another Michelin-starred hawker stall worth a visit if Hawker Chan’s is too busy. Like Hawker Chan’s, it’s located in the Maxwell Hawker Center.

6 fun and free activities to do with kids in Singapore

1. nature garden at hort park.

Garden at Hort Park Singapore

Like to surround your child with nature? Make sure you do not miss this educational nature garden situated at Hort Park .

This garden is made up of outdoor playgrounds that are suitable for children between the ages of 3 to 6. But hey, even if your little ones are slightly older, what’s stopping them from having some fun?

The garden is made up of numerous sections, such as Building Huts, Singing Seeds, Magical Woods, The Stream, The Kitchen, The Big Fig Adventure, The Log Valley, and The Secret Den.

In each of these sections, children can learn about various aspects of nature, and get to observe species of plants and birds.

They can also learn to climb and improve their balance through some of the logs placed around the garden. Altogether it's a great place for your kids to improve their motor skills.

When they've had their fill of fun here, check out what else Hort Park offers and walk through the cute little themed gardens spread across the park.

Notes and tips for visiting Hort Garden with children

  • Hort Garden is open daily from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.
  • As the area is only lit by natural light, please do not visit when it is raining and at night.
  • Pack some snacks and plenty of water for your kids and for yourself. There are no convenience shops around and only one restaurant (at the entrance of the park).
  • Hort Park is served by a number of bus services (51, 61, 93, 97, 100, 166, 963, which you can take from the nearest MRT station, Labrador Park Station (CC27, Circle Line)

2. Children’s Garden at Gardens by the Bay

Children’s Garden at Gardens by the Bay Singapore

This is an excellent addition to the playscape of Singapore. Why? It is super fun and best of all, it is free!

Can you imagine bringing them to a one-hectare playground that offers your child both a dry and wet play area? Children of all ages will be able to find something suitable for themselves and have a wonderful time.

The main aim of the garden is to encourage children to interact with nature through the integrated equipment and water play spread across 4 main zones.

All of these are set within the beautiful Gardens by the Bay , which in itself is an excellent choice for a day out and picnic in the park. Delve a bit deeper into the Gardens and you'll find more free treasures such as A Floating Baby sculpture, a couple of Dragonflies hiding in the lake of the same name, and a charming Water Lily pond .

There are lots of opportunities for the kids to have fun in the Children's Garden, including features such as stepping springs, swaying bridges, water tunnels, and treehouses.

For parents, you can join in the fun, or alternatively, you can opt to sit and relax under the canopy of the amphitheater. If you are there at the right time, there are free performances held here regularly too!

Notes and tips for visiting Children’s Garden at Gardens by the Bay

  • The Children’s Garden is closed from Monday to Wednesday.
  • Swimwear is not necessary, but do remove footwear before playing in any of the water features. And be careful on a sunny day: It's so easy to get a sunburn!
  • Shower facilities and nursing rooms are spread across the garden. Make sure to download a map to plan your trip accordingly.
  • Bring a picnic basket and a mat along. There are lots of open spaces for picnics!
  • Take the train to Bayfront MRT (CE1/DT16, Circle and Downtown Line) and follow the signs to Gardens By The Bay.

3. Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve

visit singapore free activities

Located in the North-Western corner of Singapore, almost on the border with Malaysia, is this amazing wetland that is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna.

Sungei Buloh is the first wetland and also the largest in Singapore and your children are sure to be amazed by the biodiversity. It is the perfect getaway spot from the city!

In this wetland reserve, your family and you can take part in nature walks (there are four of them — from 300 meters to 2 kilometers long), go crazy taking photos of the area, and watch birds feeding in some of the rarest mangroves in the world.

Along the longest Migratory Bird Trail, you will find 5 hides, which are essentially watchtowers, to observe the birds in their natural habitat.

During the months of September to March, bird species such as the Eurasian Wigeon, Black-Backed Kingfisher, and Himalayan Swiftlet pass through during their migration passage to feed on the rich supply of food.

Other residents of the reserve are the giant mudskippers, estuarine crocodiles, monitor lizards, and super cute otters!

It may be tempting to get close and personal to the animals, but since these guys are wild and untamed, make sure to keep a close eye on your kids and not allow them to poke or agitate the animals.

Respect for nature is of the utmost importance!

Notes and tips for visiting the Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve with children

  • Bring along insect repellents to prevent/reduce insect bites.
  • As the reserve is an open area, bring along raincoats or umbrellas in case of the occasional showers.
  • There are free educational sessions held regularly, so check out the main site before going.
  • From Kranji MRT (NS7, North-South Line), take the bus service 925 from right outside the station (do not cross to the other side of the road) and alight at Kranji Reservoir Carpark B. It is a pretty short walk into the Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve Extension’s Visitor Centre.
  • The park is open daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

4. The Artground

The Artground with kids in Singapore

Wanna groom the next Picasso? Or maybe the next Warhol?

Art is something that does not have any age restrictions, and over here at The Artground is where you can bring your children to release their creativity and talent!

On the Ground Floor, kids can take part in interactive art installations. Each year, it hosts 3 different installations to keep the content fresh.

Another area of the Artground is known as Baby Space which, as you might have guessed, is the best spot for toddlers from 0-2 years old. Here they can explore funky art exhibits suitable for their young age.

The entire setup of the Artground is to bring children closer to the arts and provides an avenue for them to learn and express themselves.

Filled with unique and whimsical visual art pieces, this is the right place to bring your child to nurture their talents!

Notes and tips for visiting The Artground with children

  • The Artground is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
  • The activities here are more suitable for kids aged from zero to twelve.
  • Check out their website for an updated list of events and shows.
  • Take the train to Mountbatten MRT (CC7, Circle Line) and use Exit B. Walk about 7 minutes to Goodman Arts Centre.

5. Marina Cove @ East Coast Park

Marina Cove at East Coast Park Singapore

East Coast Park is one of the favorites for locals to enjoy a day out in the sun and be near the beach.

After going through a series of revitalizing, the area is now replete with eateries and most importantly for the kids, a huge outdoor playground!

This new installation boasts space of 3500 square meters, and right in the middle of it lies the 3 stories high tower.

There are rope bridges connected to the tower and kids can slide down 3 different slides. As they move inside the tower, they can climb their way up to the top of the tower using a funnel net in the middle.

Across the playground, children can also play on the swings and sensory play panels. This playground provides hours of fun for the young ones!

What's more, it's a great way for them to pick up motor skills, hand-eye coordination, as well as movement.

Notes and tips for visiting Marina Cove @ East Coast Park with children

  • Marina Cove is part of the larger East Coast Park. The whole family can rent bicycles or rollerblades and whizz through the 15 kilometers of coastline it offers (right up to Marina Bay or even Sentosa island!).
  • Food and drinks are widely available so there is no need to pre-pack.
  • There's a nice beach area called East Coast Beach. Shower facilities can be found across the par, so bring a change of clothes along.
  • Take a train to Bedok MRT (EW5, East-West Line) and board the bus service 401 from the bus interchange. Please note that this bus service is only available on Saturdays from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • 2* Ibis Budget Singapore Joo Chiat is one of the most affordable yet decent hotels near East Coast Park and the beach.

6. Sentosa Island attractions

Yeah, we know, Sentosa Island is a number one destination for families in Singapore because of the Universal Studios . However, we suggest you exploring the island beyond the borders of the theme park and for free.

First of all, check out the local beaches — they are way more comfortable than the aforementioned East Coast beach. Shallow waters, extremely blue color of the sea, and clean almost-white sand — sounds like a perfect place for a family weekend on the beach!

You can choose from Siloso Beach or Palawan Beach located in 20 minutes walk from each other. Our pick would be Palawan Beach because it has quirky Curious Sue and Little Lyn sculptures and an interesting spot called the Southernmost Point of Continental Asia. It's a win-win: You would be excited to see the local end of the earth, your kids (or kid) would be excited to cross the rope bridge.

If your kid is up to an easy hike with some ocean and city views, then head to Fort Siloso Skywalk — an absolutely free and fun thing to do with children on Sentosa Island. Don't be scared away by the flight of stairs, though: There's an elevator just around the corner.

5 fun but paid things to do with kids in Singapore

Avatar Garden by the bay

If your child is blessed with an ability to ignore everything that is huge, bright and brimming with high-pitch happy squeals, we envy you! We know, it sounds weird, but sometimes it seems like Singapore has too many kids activities you need to pay for.

If you don’t want to splurge on all things attractions, choose from these options:

  • Universal Studios (79 SGD / $57) or  Singapore Zoo (45 SGD / $33) — both are immensely popular and adored by children. Pick what your kid would love more: Roller coasters and themed performances in Universal Studios or watching and feeding animals (which is, obviously, in the zoo). We slightly incline to the zoo because they have an incredible option of breakfast with animals!
  • Supertree Grove  — everyone is mesmerized by the other-worldly beauty of these artificial trees when peering upwards at the sky, but can you imagine the range of emotions when you’re WALKING among their treetops? Strolling along  OCBC Skyway (12 SGD / $8.8) is a great way to keep your kid entertained (if they aren’t afraid of heights, of course). It’s a superior place to watch the evening light show which starts at 19:45.
  • Flower Dome (53 SGD / $39) — one of the three covered gardens in Gardens by the Bay, Flower Dome is a “dreams-come-true” experience for every kid who’ve ever helped their granny in the garden. Orchids, blooming sakura, tulips, succulents, and the like in the perfectly cooled space — what else do you need to escape the scorching sun of Singapore in the middle of the day?
  • Museum of Ice Cream (40 SGD / $30) — it might be a bit challenging to get here, but what you get is eating tons of ice cream (included in admission ticket) in an Instagrammable Barbie-like settings, delving into the history of the ice cream through the centuries, and literally plunging in the sprinkle pool in the end!
  • Skyline Luge (35.3 SGD / $26) — if your kid is higher than 85cm, then hop together onto a small sled, fasten your helmets and explore four trails weaving your way through the tunnels and slopes.

Final tips about visiting Singapore with kids

Singapore Gardens of the Bay

Singapore visa

Singapore has built up diplomatic relationships with the majority of the countries out there, which makes it very simple for you and your family to come and visit.

To be sure, check out the immigration guidelines to see if you need a visa.

Best time to visit Singapore

CE LA VI Singapore

The best time to visit Singapore is anytime. Really! We have tropical weather and although you can check out weather forecasts online, the truth is that the weather can be unpredictable.

As I wrote this article, it was scorching at 33 degrees Celsius, and the next thing I knew was that it started pouring. However, most of these showers are passing only, and clear skies will emerge soon after.

What to pack for your Singapore family visit

Make sure to pack light clothing and a change of outfit in your day pack. Toilets are easily found in most parts of the island and are considered good by international standards.

Don’t leave out the sunblock if you don’t want to be burnt and always have insect repellent with you. Remember your sunnies too!

How to get around in Singapore (with kids)

Metro in Singapore

Get around the island with public transport. My favorite apps to use are:

  • MyTransport : download in the Google Play Store or Apple Store
  • StreetDirectory: download in the Google Play Store of the Apple Store

Of course, Google Maps is suitable too but the two apps mentioned above are more localized.

Wi-Fi in Singapore

WiFi is easily available everywhere, by logging on to the national Wireless@SG network at selected places. If you are out of range, chances are you can get free WiFi at cafes and restaurants.

If all else fails, go to the nearest McDonald's!
