V oyage Michigan Magazine is a publication that celebrates the people, places, and stories that make Michigan a vibrant and unique state. In a recent interview, we had the pleasure of speaking with the magazine’s editor-in-chief, Jane Smith, to gain insights into the art of storytelling and the magazine’s mission. With her wealth of experience in the field, Jane shared valuable tips and advice on how to create compelling narratives that captivate readers. Whether you’re an aspiring writer or simply curious about the world of storytelling, this interview offers a fascinating glimpse into the creative process behind Voyage Michigan Magazine.

What Makes Voyage Michigan Magazine Unique?

Voyage Michigan Magazine stands out from other publications due to its focus on authentic storytelling. According to Jane, the magazine’s mission is to showcase the stories of Michigan’s residents, businesses, and communities in a way that truly captures their essence. Instead of simply providing surface-level information, the magazine delves deep into the lives and experiences of its subjects, allowing readers to form a meaningful connection with the stories being told.

Through its engaging narratives and stunning visuals, Voyage Michigan Magazine aims to inspire readers to explore the state and discover its hidden gems. The magazine covers a wide range of topics, including travel, food, culture, and history, offering a comprehensive snapshot of everything Michigan has to offer.

The Art of Storytelling

When asked about the key elements of a compelling story, Jane emphasized the importance of a strong narrative arc. She explained that every story should have a clear beginning, middle, and end, with a well-defined conflict and resolution. By structuring a story in this way, writers can create a sense of tension and build anticipation, keeping readers engaged from start to finish.

In addition to a solid narrative structure, Jane highlighted the significance of character development. She explained that relatable and well-rounded characters are essential for connecting with readers on an emotional level. By providing detailed descriptions and exploring the motivations and desires of the characters, writers can bring their stories to life and make them more relatable.

Another crucial aspect of storytelling, according to Jane, is the use of vivid descriptions and sensory details. By painting a vivid picture with words, writers can transport readers to the setting of the story and make them feel like they are experiencing it firsthand. Whether it’s the smell of freshly baked bread or the sound of waves crashing on the shore, these sensory details add depth and richness to the narrative.

Interview Tips for Writers

For aspiring writers looking to improve their interview skills, Jane offered some valuable tips. Firstly, she emphasized the importance of preparation. Before conducting an interview, it’s essential to research the subject thoroughly and come up with a list of thoughtful and engaging questions. This preparation ensures that the interview flows smoothly and that all relevant information is covered.

Active listening is another crucial skill for conducting successful interviews. Jane advised writers to be fully present during the interview and to actively engage with the interviewee’s responses. By listening carefully and asking follow-up questions, writers can uncover deeper insights and create a more compelling story.

Lastly, Jane stressed the significance of building rapport with the interviewee. By creating a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere, writers can encourage the interviewees to open up and share their stories more freely. This connection between the writer and interviewee is what ultimately allows for a genuine and authentic narrative to emerge.

Common Interview Mistakes to Avoid

During the interview, we also discussed some common mistakes that interviewers should avoid. Jane highlighted the importance of avoiding leading questions, which can steer the interviewee towards a desired response. Instead, it’s crucial to ask open-ended questions that allow the interviewee to share their thoughts and experiences in their own words.

Another mistake to avoid is interrupting the interviewee. Jane stressed the importance of giving the interviewees enough time to fully express their thoughts and ideas. Interrupting can disrupt the flow of the interview and prevent the interviewee from sharing important details.

Lastly, it’s essential to be respectful and considerate throughout the interview process. This includes being mindful of the interviewee’s time and ensuring that they feel comfortable and valued. By treating the interviewee with respect, writers can foster a positive and productive environment for the interview.

Sample Interview Questions

For writers who are new to conducting interviews, Jane provided a list of sample questions to get started:

  • What inspired you to pursue your current career? – This question allows the interviewee to share their personal journey and motivations.
  • Can you tell us about a particularly memorable experience you’ve had in your field? – This question prompts the interviewee to share a specific anecdote or story that highlights their expertise and passion.
  • How has your work impacted the community or industry? – This question explores the interviewee’s contributions and the broader impact of their work.
  • What challenges have you faced in your career, and how did you overcome them? – This question delves into the interviewee’s resilience and problem-solving abilities.
  • Do you have any advice for aspiring professionals in your field? – This question allows the interviewee to share their wisdom and insights with others.
  • What do you hope readers take away from your story? – This question focuses on the impact and message of the interviewee’s story.

Our interview with Jane Smith, editor-in-chief of Voyage Michigan Magazine, provided valuable insights into the art of storytelling and the magazine’s mission. From the importance of a strong narrative structure to the significance of character development and sensory details, Jane shared valuable tips on how to create compelling narratives that resonate with readers.

Life & Work with Bryan Symansic

voyage magazine michigan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bryan Symansic.

Hi Bryan, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today. I’m Bryan Symansic and I’m outdoorsy and artsy-fartsy. I was born and raised in Michigan, and I’ve spent two decades designing t-shirts, logos, advertising, concert posters, beer labels, and other cool stuff. I grew tired of working for other people and always wanted to create my own clothing brand and work for myself. I created The Michigan Outfitter clothing brand to be creative and cool on quality garments. Now I’m living my dream and wholesaling to stores all around the State.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome? It has been a smooth road. I wish I would have started sooner.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do? I really take pride in making eye-catching unique graphics. Not simple block letters on a cheap shirt. I try to my each graphic look like art you would want to hang on your wall. My graphics get copied all the time, but what I love is that the good stores that carry my product know who made the original design and don’t buy the knockoffs.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success? Making the most with the least amount of effort and time. My goal is to thrive without killing myself in the process. I want to enjoy career and enjoy my life every day. That is why I started this, so I wouldn’t work 7 days a week in a factory like my dad before me.

Voyage Michigan Magazine Interview

Exploring Life & Business with Nicole Saleh of Mavella Home

voyage magazine michigan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Saleh.

Hi Nicole, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to share where your story begins. I was working in the advertising/marketing field for 10 years and felt very unfulfilled. Before I had my second child, I made a conscious decision to stay home and raise my children. I was very fortunate to do so and don’t regret it, but throughout those years, I also felt like I had lost myself. When my youngest daughter was about to start preschool, I had to be honest with myself about what I wanted to do, since I would soon be back in the workforce. Did I really want to go back to marketing? I knew in my heart and gut that it was not the right decision for me. I wanted to do something that I was passionate about, something that was both fulfilling and rewarding to me. The answer that I kept coming back to time and again was Interior Design. I have always had a love for design and it was something that came naturally to me, but I was unsure if I could turn this passion into an actual career.

I decided to just go for it and went back to school for Interior Design. I immediately started working in my field and about two years later, I decided to take the plunge and started my own business. I was given a referral through a friend whose cousin wanted to complete her unfinished basement. From that one job, I’ve received many referrals and I have never looked back. It has been over three years since I’ve started Mavella Home and it’s now a thriving Interior Design business.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road? It hasn’t been a smooth road and there have definitely been struggles along the way. I’m a first-time entrepreneur, so just learning about the business and all of the processes has been overwhelming at times. I had to navigate my way through all of the uncertainty. It was, and continues to be, a lot of hard work and I don’t believe I will ever stop learning in this business.

There’s no such thing as a perfect project and there are always obstacles during a renovation, but I tell all of my clients that we are partners and if something goes wrong, we’ll find solutions together. Sometimes what appeared to be a wrench thrown into the overall design actually worked to our benefit.  Currently, there are challenges with the supply chain, so we are waiting longer periods of time for items to be delivered.

Naturally, there is the challenge of finding balance between raising three children and running a growing business. It can be a lot at times, but to be able to do what you love on a daily basis is such a blessing. The fact that I get to express myself creatively has been a dream come true.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business? The name Mavella Home originated from the fusion of my children’s names – Matteo, Ava, and Ella. I specialize in designing residential spaces, both new construction and renovations. I also designed my first commercial space this year, which was the SkinFiniti Beauty and Wellness Spa in Royal Oak.

I’m known for creating classic and timeless designs and for approaching every project like it’s my own. If clients struggle with envisioning a space, I am able to visually present to them what the potential of the space could look like through vision boards and material samples. I’ve often said, and I firmly believe, that a beautiful space can be achieved without a high-end budget.

I’m most proud of the relationships that I have built with my clients because we truly are partners.  I am fully invested in the creative process and am empathetic to my client’s needs and budget, in order to achieve the best possible outcome. When that mutual trust and respect is nurtured, you are able to create great things together. To be able to design someone’s home is a privilege and that is not lost on me. The fact that I can create spaces that my clients love and will create memories in for years to come is by far the most rewarding part to me. When a client sees a space for the first time and they are over the moon excited or have tears in their eyes, that is the reason why I do what I do.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about? Something surprising that most people don’t know about me is that I’ve been involved in theatre and was the lead role in a local movie many years ago.
