Voyager Balloons, Cappadocia

Last Updated on July 17, 2023

Cappadocia Voyager Balloons  is a hot air ballooning company in  Cappadocia , Turkey that specializes in “boutique” flights, not the huge 40-passenger bus-in-the-sky baskets of some other companies.

The Voyager Experience

The standard flight has been reduced from 24 passengers to 20 to provide a more spacious area in the basket promoting social distancing. Voyager only accepts reservations for the  first flight of the day  (that is, the best one).  Click here to make a reservation with Voyager Balloons.

Voyager Balloons  has prepared a 4.5-minute video of the Voyager Balloon experience. It really lets you know what it's like to fly in a hot-air balloon over Cappadocia.

"Our aim is to provide the most unique and satisfying hot-air balloon flight experience over Cappadocia," says Mr M. Halis Aydoğan, the owner of the company who is also Voyager's multi-lingual, highly experienced  balloon pilot , along with Mr Hakan Yıldız.

Comfort Flights

"Operated in our medium-sized 20-passenger balloon, we take no more than 16 passengers on this flight so that passengers can enjoy more personal space and freedom to move around for photographs, videos, and the view," Mr Aydoğan says. A licensed tour guide, he is one of the most experienced hot-air balloon pilots in Cappadocia, having learned ballooning from Lars-Erik Möre and Kaili Kidner, the originators of hot-air ballooning here. Mr Hakan Yıldız, also very experienced, is the other Ultra Comfort Flight pilot.

"Our advantage is that both Hakan and I speak fluent English and we know Cappadocia intimately. This is exceptionally important because a balloon flight here is not just time in the sky. It's the best opportunity to learn about Cappadocia, its landscape, culture, history, traditions, agriculture—anything you see from the sky. Many pilots do not have the personality, knowledge or language skills to make a flight the enriching experience it should be, giving the passengers the best value for their money."

The Comfort Flight lasts from 75 to 90 minutes, which is longer than many other companies' flights," Mr Aydoğan says.

Exclusive Flights

Voyager Balloons is the only company in Cappadocia to offer ultra-deluxe flights: in a special basket built for wide visibility, four comfortable aircraft-style seats provide a  theater view  of the panorama. Snacks and drinks are served from a hamper to small individual swing-out tables:

Four lucky passengers flying high with hors d'oeuvres in the sky in Voyager's four-seat deluxe balloon. The white basket holds the goodies...

Cash Discount

Also, if you pay for your flight in  cash , Voyager offers you a  € 10 discount .

I've known the manager of  Voyager Balloons , Mr  M. Halis Aydoğan , for years. He's an experienced tourism expert, licensed professional guide, and an ethical businessman.

Cappadocia Hot Air Balloon: How to Choose the Right Company

Written By: The Planet D

Updated On: December 21, 2021

A Cappadocia hot air balloon ride is probably the most famous place on earth soar above the landscape. It’s been a dream of ours since we first saw images of colourful balloons floating above the fairy chimneys and dotting the lunar landscape. A Cappadocia hot air balloon flight is something you won’t soon forget. But we learned that not all flights are created equal.

Table of Contents

Cappadocia Hot Air Balloon Flight

It was while relaxing in Istanbul that Dave booked our first hot air balloon ride over Cappadocia via the Internet. We scoured the endless tour companies listed in our search and decided on the most expensive offering. We thought this is a once in a lifetime opportunity so we didn’t want to blow it.

cappadocia hot air balloon with royal balloons

It was low season so they gave a deal and for €140, we were automatically put in the comfort tour where they offered larger baskets with more room. We felt great about our choice and looked forward to our first flight over the fairytale chimneys.

cappadocia balloons

We were confident that we were going to have the best hot air balloon ride in all of Cappadocia.

They picked us up at our accommodation, the Kayakapi Cave Hotel, on time but when we were brought to breakfast we were a little disappointed to see a sparse display of pastries and cookies with a bit of tea and coffee.

Hot Air Balloon Tour Cappadocia

voyager balloon company

We’ve done many hot air balloon tours around the world, and they always feed you well so we were surprised to see such a small breakfast on our Cappadocia tour.

However, we’d always had breakfast after our balloon rides, so maybe this was just a snack. We weren’t too upset either way, because we were here for the flight, not the food.

Note:  In Cappadocia, they feed you before your hot air balloon ride, unlike all other balloon rides we’ve taken on four other continents. So our little snack beforehand turned out to be our breakfast.

cappadocia balloons

We sat forever waiting for the vans to finally bring us to our launching pad. We heard through the grapevine that some celebrity wedding was taking place and we were waiting on them, but they never showed. (Damn rich people ruining it for the rest of us!)

When we finally got in the van to go to our launch pad, it was getting late in the morning. When we arrived at the launch site other balloons were already filled and many others were already in the air.

The Launch Area Makes All the Difference

balloons of cappadocia

The sun was already coming over the horizon and we weren’t sure if we were late because of the celebrity mix up, or if this is how they always operate.

Dave mentioned to me that we were going to miss the sunrise. I relayed our frustrations to our guide and said, “You advertise that you are the best and that is why your prices are much higher than others, so why are we taking off last?”

cappadocia balloon ride

According to their website, Voyager Balloons has the guides who are most experienced and who are skilled enough to fly low through the fairy chimneys. Because of their skill, they are supposed to be able to mix it up and go where other companies can’t.

Fairy Chimneys of Cappadocia

The Fairy Chimneys of Cappadocia are fascinating; they reminded us of the hoodoos of Alberta

balloons cappadocia

We never did fly through the fairy chimneys, and I chalked it up to not understanding what they meant when they said “fly through fairy chimneys.” Maybe they just meant that we saw them. And we did see a lot.

We named Cappadocia one of the see where else we suggested.  most romantic getaways in the world .

Our Second Cappadocia Hot Air Balloon Flight Was Better than the First

unique landscape of Cappadocia

On this flight we never managed to get those epic shots that everyone always sees of hundreds of Cappadocia Balloons soaring through the sky together.

We were always either higher above the balloons or right in the middle of them.

It was low season, so there were only about 100 balloons in the sky instead of the usual 150. But the flight itself was a bit of a disappointment, due to the fact that we didn’t go through any caverns or near any spires.

balloons of Cappadocia

I don’t want to waste too much time on this Cappadocia Hot Air Balloon experience, because we had a second chance and that second flight gave us everything we ever wanted out of Cappadocia.

So, let’s move on!

Cappadocia Hot Air Balloon Ride Number Two!

cappadocia hot air balloons

Luckily, we had two chances to fly over Cappadocia in Turkey. Our second morning in Cappadocia was organized by our hosts at a travel conference we attended in Istanbul . They booked with Royal Balloons and I’m not going to lie, I expected this flight to be worse than yesterday.

ballooning in cappadocia

My expectations had dropped considerably. I assumed I booked with the best, so how could this be any better? Plus, we weren’t going in the comfort balloons, we were all going into a regular size. Regardless, I was happy to be going up again.

hot air balloons and fairy chimneys

The morning already started off way better than the day before. We arrived at the hotel restaurant to a full buffet breakfast with actual tables to sit at to have a bite before our flight.

There were a lot of people in the building, but we were all broken into smaller groups and sent to different vans to join our different balloons once we filled our bellies.

cappadocia hot air balloon with sun

We took off in a very different location than our balloon ride the day before, and were thrilled to see that as we took off, the sun was just coming up. As we rose, we witnessed the incredible Cappadocia landscape filled with colourful hot air balloons.

Flying with Royal Balloons lived up to all our expectations. Before our eyes were the Cappadocia Balloon-filled sky I’d come to expect. It seemed that hundreds of balloons were in the sky, soaring above jagged spires and tall chimneys.

Fairytale Chimney’s of Cappadocia

balloons of Cappadocia

Our pilot took his time rising in the air and stayed low, getting so close to the fairy chimneys we felt as if we’d run into them. He went through narrow gorges and jagged peaks and we all grinned with excitement as the spectacle unfolded before us. Balloons were everywhere and we seemed to have the best vantage point of all of them.

Booking a Balloon Flight with the Right Tour Company

hot air ballooning cappadocia

I soon realized that you must book with the right Cappadocia hot air balloon company to have the best Cappadocia experience.

If you don’t launch far away from the crowd, you’ll never see the mass of balloons above the landscape.

It also seemed to depend very much on the pilot. If the pilot doesn’t have enough experience, he can’t stay low in the valleys. He has to go higher above the other balloons and away from any obstacles to keep safe. The more experienced the pilot, the better flight you’ll have. If he is skilled and confident, he can soar and dive at will.

He can ride the wind through narrow gorges and close to fairy chimneys and he can take you out to see the extraordinary views. Our second pilot also spoke better English and had a lot more to say about the landscape. I also loved his sense of humour and casual way of speaking.

balloons cappadocia

I truly believe that the launching point makes all the difference. Our first flight left with many balloons and we were surrounded by other companies. We never could get away from the crowd enough to see the full spectrum of balloons.

cappadocia hot air balloons

Our second hot air balloon ride took off far away from the crowd, allowing us to view the parade of other balloons in the sky.

While our pilot was skilled, he couldn’t turn or drive the hot air balloon.

All he could do was ride the wind currents by raising and lowering the balloon to change directions with the wind. By beginning at a premier location, he already had the best vantage point.

How do you choose a Hot Air Balloon Company in Cappadocia?

Dave and I thought we did our research well. We read travel blog posts about our company and we scoured each and every website.

We were taken by the expensive price and SEO skills of the first company we went with.

They claimed to be the best and that is why their prices were higher, and we believed them. But we should have asked more questions.

Questions to Ask Before Your Hot Air Balloon Ride Over Cappadocia

  • How skilled are your pilots?
  • Can we be booked on the flight with your most skilled pilot? (I am willing to pay more for this once in a lifetime experience)
  • Will they go low in the valley?
  • Will they mix up the flight and go low and high (like ours with Royal Balloons) or will they just stay high?
  • Where is your launch point?
  • Do you take off with the crowd, or do you launch with other balloons?
  • How big is the basket and how many people are in each basket?
  • What is the breakfast like? Is it a proper meal or just snacks?
  • Are you speaking to the actual owner/operator of the company?

champage after cappadocia flight

Note: We booked with Royal Balloons and Voyager Balloons, and Royal gave us the better ride.

But we had read that Voyager gives good rides as well, so perhaps we didn’t ask the right questions.

Do Your Research Before Booking a Hot Air Balloon Ride in Cappadocia

Visiting Cappadocia is a once in a lifetime experience and you want to make the most of your hot air balloon flight.

We were lucky to have two opportunities . Had we not had the second day, we wouldn’t have realized what we had missed.

I honestly thought that all the grand photographs I saw were photoshopped like crazy, and just assumed that our first flight was the norm and that travel bloggers and travel writers just made up the experience.

But once I saw that a Cappadocia hot air balloon flight could be extraordinary on the second morning, I realized that it’s the pilot you are with that matters.

Cappadocia balloon flight with champagne

Perhaps the first company did have more experienced pilots, but we didn’t ask the right questions.

We just paid the most money and thought we’d get what we paid for. We learned a valuable lesson: to ask questions before committing. The Internet can lead a lot of customers astray.

Sure, if we didn’t have the second day, we would have gone away feeling fine about our flight, but by seeing what a real hot air balloon flight in Cappadocia is like, we went away mesmerized by our experience. What one would you want?

Tips for a Cappadocia Hot Air Balloon Ride

Cappadocia Hot Air Balloon

  • Dress in layers: you will go to high altitudes and it can be very cold
  • Pack a hat and gloves
  • Bring Sunglasses
  • Carry a GoPro on a Selfie Quick Pod Stick so you can get shots of yourself in the balloon
  • Be the last of your group in the basket. If you hang back and let others go in first, you’ll be on the outside corner giving you unobstructed views.

In the end, we loved our Cappadocia Hot Air Balloon Experience.

Both trips ended with a champagne toast and a chance to offer tips to our guides. I was surprised that Royal Balloons didn’t offer sticks with photographs and instead gave people actual hard copy photos.

hot air balloons of cappadocia

I think they should update their photography experience and take photos of the entire trip allowing people to buy all the photos uploaded onto a stick. More people would buy for sure.

Dave and I had plenty of photographs but I am sure that others would love to give €20 Euro for memories of their Cappadocia Hot Air Balloon Experience, from take off to landing.

Dave & Deb, thanks for this post. To clarify, did Royal Balloons pick you up at your hotel, or did you have to go early morning to another hotel as your meeting point for van pickup? You describe a full breakfast at a hotel during your Royal Balloons experience. I’m just wondering if this meant you ate breakfast at your own hotel, or Royal took you to another hotel for breakfast before then taking you to the launch site. Thanks in advance!

We went to another hotel for breakfast. I remember them picking us up at our hotel and then taking us to another hotel where we ate breakfast as a group at the second hotel before getting on a shuttle to take us to the launch site. I would just double check before booking whether or not you have to get yourself to the breakfast location or if they send shuttles as things change constantly in the world of travels. Have an amazing time, it was the trip of a lifetime.

Hello, Thank you for your wonderful review on what to look for when doing a hot air balloon flight and which company to choose. I seriously had no idea. I noticed a lot of companies want to charge me at least 25%-50% more because I’m a solo traveller yet I’ll be in a basket with at least 20-50 people tell me how does that work lol.

Cappadocia is one of the places I want to visit one day. It looks wonderful!!

Hi, I love your article and the images are great. Do you recommend visiting Turkey and Cappadocia in the winter or not all? Also, would you recommend someone who prefers to choose a smaller group when going on a hot air balloon ride in Cappadocia?

Hello Dave & Deb. Hot air balloon flights are also being organized over Pamukkale (Cotton castle) since couple of years. You may consider attending one if Pamukkale will be your destination in the future. Thank you for the useful article.

Great narration and pictures mate

Taking a balloon ride in Cappadocia is pretty much a must! It was amazing when I went (I chose a different company, Butterfly). Loved your descriptions and photos! Re getting into the basket last, I was lucky – everyone in my quad of the basket was keen to get good photos so we worked together and periodically rotated around so everyone had a chance for the “prime spot”. International collaboration at its finest 🙂

Ohh my God !!! I have no words for describe this place and these pictures.. very very nice !! congrats !!!!!

I had a superb experience with Voyager, and we were away from other balloons and went into valleys and could almost touch the chimneys. I am so sorry you did not get the same wonderful experience we had. I thought they were the best and they have a great group of safe pilots.

I am glad to hear that you had a fantastic experience. I think if we would have asked the right questions we could have made sure that we got what we expected. I had heard that they went into the valleys and chimneys, so perhaps they put us with a new pilot. Great to hear you had a super time, that is what counts. It is a once in a lifetime experience.

Excellent post, Dave & Deb. Since we are planning Cappadocia in the near future, your unbiased reviews will really come in handy. Loved it. Thanks for sharing 🙂

Royal is the best! I flew with them back in 2013 at the suggestion of Beth from Beers & Beans.

Beautiful photos, Cappadocia looks so dreamy! the balloon ride should definitely be in everyones bucket list! 🙂 Thanks for sharing this. Safe travels.

‘ve never had a balloon, I want to know how it feels. I think it’s something fantastic and unforgettable. I still have to make that dream!

I’ve only been on a hot air balloon ride once before, it was an amazing experience, even for me who isn’t great with anything that might put me in danger. This looks amazing though, the photo’s are incredible. I definitely think a hot air balloon ride is something everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime.

I rode with Royal too, great ride!

Great review, tips and photos from our two wonderful hot balloon rides! Yes, we definitely learned that paying more doesn’t necessarily equal a better ride – in fact the opposite in our case. Looking forward to seeing you guys again in Turkey in April 🙂

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers about your balloon flight with Cappadocia Atlas Balon. If you can’t find the answer you’re looking for here, please email and we’ll be glad to help.

Q1. Cost of the flight?

Our flight is 240€ per person and you can pay with different currencies.

Q2. When do we fly?

We schedule flights early in the morning, seven days a week, year-round. Our each flight is custom tailored to the weather conditions of the day by our experienced pilots. Hot air balloons are completely dependant on the wind. In other words we do exactly what the wind does. As the sun heats the earth the air begins to boil just like a pot of water. Early morning air is best for your safety. The first hour of light in the morning is the safest time of the day.

Q3. Take-off time?

There are two morning flights allowed by Turkish Civil Aviation in Cappadocia. The first flight just takes off before sunrise and the second flight takes of after sunrise.

Q4. Do you offer breakfast?

Yes, we offer open-buffet breakfast in our restaurant before the flight. Unlike other balloon companies, we provide our guests with an in-dooor restaurant that is not dusty, warm, and equipped with indoor bathrooms.

Q5. Who can fly in a balloon?

To fly in a balloon you must be at least 6 years of age, and we ask that our younger passengers (under 16 years of age) are accompanied by a responsible adult of 18 years or over. Passengers should be at least 4’6″ tall, so they can see over the edge of the basket and are able to adopt the landing position. There is no upper age limit.

Q6. Will we be cold up there?

Actually you will be WARMER in the balloon. HOT air balloons (note the clue HOT) float with the wind so there is no wind chill. Generally in the morning as we climb the air actually gets warmer by a few degree over Cappadocia.

World View to start flying passengers on stratospheric balloon rides in 2024

Seats are $50,000 apiece.

Arizona-based company World View Enterprises aims to start lofting paying customers on stratospheric balloon rides in 2024, as depicted in this artist's illustration.

Aspiring space tourists now have another option to consider.

World View Enterprises is developing a balloon-based system that will carry people to the stratosphere , with the first commercial flights targeted for early 2024, the Arizona-based company announced today (Oct. 4).

The typical ride will last six to eight hours and take passengers to an altitude of at least 100,000 feet (30,000 meters), where they'll be able to see the curvature of Earth against the blackness of space. But the overall experience will last five days, which will be spent in and around sites of natural beauty and cultural and historical significance, World View representatives said.

Related: World View wants to open a new market in the stratosphere

World View's Explorer capsule will reach altitudes greater than 100,000 feet (30,000 meters).

"World View's ambition is to change the conversation around space tourism. It's not just a joyride; it's so much bigger and more important than that," company president and CEO Ryan Hartman said in a statement. "We're redefining space tourism for participants by spending hours at apogee [a flight's highest point], building memories around some of Earth's most magnificent wonders."

Each seat on the company's pressurized, eight-passenger Explorer capsule sells for $50,000 — significantly less than any other major space-tourism outfit is charging. And the ride to the stratosphere will be smooth and gentle enough to accommodate people of widely varying ages and fitness levels, according to World View representatives.

"By designing a space tourism experience that is more affordable and more accessible to more people, we're hoping to give as many humans as possible the chance to see our planet from unprecedented new heights," Hartman said.

And World View already has a customer for its first crewed, commercial flight. The nonprofit Space For Humanity bought all of that debut mission's seats and will fill them with citizen astronauts that it will select and train.

"We are very excited about securing World View's first commercial capsule," Rachel Lyons, executive director of Space for Humanity, said in the same statement.

"Our mission is to expand access to space to all and in doing so, support the transformation of our world’s most ambitious leaders so they can use their experience in space to create positive change here on Earth," Lyons added. "This is a groundbreaking time for space tourism, and we're looking forward to giving more people the opportunity to experience it for themselves."

The Explorer capsule will carry eight passengers and two employees (a concierge and an operator/tour guide).

World View space tourism, take two

This isn't World View's first foray into space tourism. Nearly a decade ago, the company announced plans for a balloon-capsule system called Voyager , which would ferry folks to the stratosphere for $75,000 per seat.

At the time, World View said it hoped to get Voyager up and running by 2016. That didn't happen. And in 2019, two of World View's co-founders, Taber MacCallum and Jane Poynter, started a new company called Space Perspective , which is now developing a balloon-capsule system of its own called Spaceship Neptune . Florida-based Space Perspective hopes to begin commercial tourist flights to the stratosphere in 2024, and it's selling tickets on the vehicle for $125,000 apiece .

The Explorer plan shares some similarities with Voyager's design — for example, ascending with the aid of a giant balloon but landing beneath a parasail on dry ground. (Spaceship Neptune, by contrast, won't employ a parasail, and it will return to Earth via ocean splashdowns.) But Explorer is not just Voyager rebranded, Hartman said.

"The entire thing is different," he told Space.com in an interview.

The new concept centers on a desire to help foster "an inspired perspective for a radically improved future," Hartman added. That desire led the company to map out immersive, five-day customer experiences in launch sites that are tourist draws in their own right.

For example, the first operational Explorer flights are scheduled to lift off from Page, Arizona, close to the Grand Canyon . Customers will have the chance to explore the nearby Navajo and Hopi reservations, among other excursions, before settling in to soar high above Earth's most famous canyon system.

World View plans to lift off from six other sites around the world as well: Queensland, Australia, near the Great Barrier Reef; Kenya; Norway; Amazonian Brazil; Mongolia, near the Great Wall of China; and Egypt, near the Giza Pyramid Complex.

The Explorer flight experience will be luxurious, company representatives said. The capsule will feature reclining seats, high-speed internet access, Earth-facing cameras and star-spotting telescopes, among other amenities. Two World View employees will travel on each flight, with one serving as a concierge and the other an operator and tour guide. Meals and drinks, including specially devised cocktails, will be served. And yes, there will be a bathroom on board.

World View is still developing the Explorer capsule, Hartman said. But the company has already conducted four flights with the giant balloon earmarked for the project, he added. When fully inflated, that balloon holds 17 million cubic feet (481,400 cubic meters) of gas.

The Explorer capsule and parasail will be reusable. The balloons will not, but each one will be recycled post-flight into products that benefit communities near the liftoff site, Harman said.

Explorer will spend six to eight hours aloft on most flights, then land on terra firm beneath a parafoil.

Space tourism taking off

World View is entering an increasingly busy and active field, one that's taking paying customers to a variety of altitudes.

World View and its most direct competitor, Space Perspective, offer rides to the stratosphere. Both Virgin Galactic and Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin are selling trips to suborbital space (to altitudes around 62 miles, or 100 kilometers) aboard rocket-powered craft, which require deeper pockets. Virgin Galactic's current ticket price is $450,000; Blue Origin hasn't announced what it's charging, but it's expected to be in the same ballpark as Virgin Galactic, if not more expensive.

And SpaceX recently launched four people on the first-ever all-private mission to Earth orbit, a flight called Inspiration4 that employed the company's Crew Dragon capsule. Inspiration4 was booked and commanded by billionaire Jared Isaacman, who has not divulged how much he paid. But it was likely around $200 million, if the per-seat prices that NASA pays for Crew Dragon flights to the International Space Station are any guide.

SpaceX is scheduled to launch another orbital tourism mission in February, a Crew Dragon trip to the space station that will be operated by Houston company Axiom Space . And Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa and a video producer will fly to the orbiting lab aboard a Russian Soyuz spacecraft this December. (A Russian film crew will also launch to the station aboard a Soyuz on Oct. 5, but Russia's federal space agency Roscosmos is apparently footing at least part of that bill.)

So there's a lot going on. But World View is confident it can carve out a place for itself in the space-tourism arena.

"I don't see this as a fight for market share at all," Hartman told Space.com. "In fact, I see it as a broadening of the ecosystem that we're all feeling called to create."

World View already has extensive stratospheric flight experience, with robotic balloon-based craft the company calls Stratollites . Stratollites are designed to carry payloads aloft for long durations, allowing customers to gather a variety of remote-sensing data.

World View will continue operating Stratollites, but the company expects Explorer to eventually become its biggest moneymaker.

"Revenue-wise, space tourism is going to be 65 to 70% of our business," Hartman said. "We're so excited about this business."

What is your most meaningful Voyager moment and why?

I arrived at Caltech as an incoming graduate student in the late summer of 1967 and began work in the Space Radiation Laboratory, headed up by Robby Vogt and Ed Stone. I passed my thesis exam in March 1973 and I continued that summer with my thesis experiment, launching it on a balloon from Fort Churchill, Manitoba. It’s a long story, but something went wrong with the cut-down mechanism and we lost our experiment -- to the Russians! We did eventually get it back, but it was a hopeless pile of junk. So, I was put on a new project that was just starting -- the Cosmic Ray Subsystem (CRS) experiment for Voyager.

I was put in charge of testing the detectors for the Low Energy Telescope (LET) and The Electron Telescope (TET). One component of the LET telescopes was the front covering that we called a window, which was made of aluminum and very thin, 3 microns thick. The windows were mounted on circular lids that screwed onto the bodies of the telescopes. We were worried that the technicians working around the spacecraft would accidentally poke a hole in them, so we had spares available just in case. That led to my first memorable moment: I got to inspect the windows just before the spacecraft was sealed up for launch. I climbed up in there and inspected the windows. That was exciting!

My next memorable moment was when Voyager 1 encountered Jupiter, the first planetary encounter for either Voyager. Since Ed was the project scientist, I sometimes got to occupy the CRS chair at the table where the scientists gathered to discuss what discoveries were going to be presented at the press conference the next morning. I remember seeing the image of the moon Io for the first time and thinking that the Caltech students had engineered a brilliant stunt -- they must have substituted a picture of a poorly made pizza for the picture of Io! All that orange and black on Io changed our thinking about the moons in the solar system. I think most of us thought they would all look more or less like our own Moon. But, wow, how wrong was that! The discussion at the table about whether we were looking at an old or a new surface was fascinating and was put to rest a few days later with the stunning discovery of the volcanoes erupting in real time on Io.

Finally, for me, a cosmic-ray physicist, one of the highlights by far has been the crossing of the heliopause, the boundary of the Sun’s magnetic bubble, into interstellar space by Voyager 1. The Voyagers will orbit the center of the galaxy forever. It is humbling to think that I’ve been a part of such a fantastic mission.

Looking back, I think losing that balloon in summer of 1973 was a good thing, as Voyager has been a career mission for me and I could not imagine a better one.
