Skiing may not wait just outside the door, but New York City residents can easily be on the slopes for a day trip or a weekend ski getaway. A train/bus combination can whisk skiers from Grand Central Station to Thunder Mountain in as little as an hour and a quarter. Longer runs and more vertical drop await just two hours from the city.

A three-hour radius includes resorts in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New York's Catskills. Skiing near New York City is made even easier by arrangements that resorts have made with transportation companies, offering round-trip bus transport, sometimes as part of a package with lift tickets and equipment rentals. The NYC Snow Bus provides transportation from Union Square to several of these mountains.

The order in the rankings below is based on multiple – and sometimes conflicting – factors, so the order is less important than the attributes of each mountain. Some skiers will be happy to sacrifice a few hundred feet of vertical drop in order to get there sooner.

For others, it's the powder that counts, or the variety of the terrain, not the travel time. Other facilities are important considerations, too, such as a tubing hill, learning programs for children, or the availability of night skiing.

In the Catskills, a two-hour drive from the city, Windham Mountain's 1,600-foot vertical drop encompasses a terrain so varied that it allows for seven double-black diamond trails for experts, along with a dozen gentle runs for beginners and almost half of the 54 trails for intermediates.

Boarders can ride at six separate terrain parks with more than 80 jumps, rails, pipes, and boxes, plus an inflatable Air Bag for practicing jumps.

Nearly all the 285 skiable acres - the most of any resort on this list - are covered by snowmaking, which has been enhanced in the past two years by major investments in equipment. Lighting extends the ski day on Friday and Saturday nights. Or extend the day right from the start with the First Tracks program that allows you to ski with a guide in the morning before the lifts open to the public. The multi-lane tubing park is open until 8pm on Friday and Saturday, and features a conveyor lift and reserved lanes for solo swirlers or larger groups. A rustic lodge at the tubing hill is a good place to warm up between runs.

The Tubing Park has a fleet of Arctic Cat snowmobiles just for kids between ages 6 and 13 and weighing less than 120 pounds. The resort also offers ice skating and cross-country skiing.

With the same 1,600 feet of vertical as Windham and about 2.75 hours from the city, Hunter Mountain includes three mountain faces that offer a tremendous variety of terrain. Its 320 skiable acres are covered by state-of-the-art snowmaking that supplements the Catskills' natural snowfall. The mountain is known for its high-quality maintenance and grooming.

The 67 trails are divided into 25 percent beginner, 30 percent intermediate, 30 percent advanced, and 15 percent for experts. Terrain parks include the signature Park Avenue, located on the main face of Hunter Mountain with plenty of jumps, transitions, rails, and other features. Park Ave West steps up the game with constantly changing features and is the venue for all of Hunter Mountain's freestyle terrain events.

A zipline canopy tour soars 600 feet above the resort, and the newly branded Bubly tubing park is one of the largest in New York. The tubing hill, at nearly 1,000 feet long, is accessed by a carpet lift.

With a respectable 1,040-foot vertical drop an hour's drive from New York, Mountain Creek offers the longest runs of any resort that's less than two hours from the city . The 46 trails, accessed by eight lifts, spread across four mountain peaks and are 100 percent covered by snowmaking.

About one-fourth of the trails are for beginners, one third for advanced skiers, and the rest for intermediates. Beginning skiers are not limited to the lower slopes, but have green runs from two of the summits. The 67-acre terrain park has over 80 freestyle features and a 50-foot jump airbag.

All the 167 skiable acres are lighted for night skiing ; the resort has a zipline tour and a 30-lane tubing park.

Mountain Creek's Go Skiing and Go Snowboarding packages include all the essentials for a day on the slopes or for a beginner to polish up their skills. Along with a full-day lift ticket and equipment rentals, the pass gives access to the Terrain Based Learning skills area for self-guided lessons and the help of instructors.

Terrain Based Learning was pioneered at Mountain Creek, creating a revolution in ski instruction, and has since been adopted by some of the country's best ski schools. A unique feature of Mountain Creek is the availability of rental snow pants and jackets for those who want to try out skiing or boarding but don't have suitable winter outerwear.

Although one of the smallest mountains listed here, with only 100 skiable acres and 500 feet of vertical drop, Thunder Ridge earns its place among the larger resorts as the closest to the city and the easiest to reach by public transportation . Via the Metro-North Ski Train from Grand Central Station and the free shuttle from the Patterson train station, it's about 1.25 hours from the city to the mountain.

The family-friendly resort's 22 trails include six for advanced skiers, with the remainder divided evenly between beginners and intermediates. All are covered by snowmaking, as is the terrain park, and are accessed by three chairlifts and four carpet lifts. A plus for families is the reasonable price of lift tickets. Weekdays offer the best value for adults.

Thunder Ridge is known for its learning program, with the northeast's highest percentage of Professional Ski Instructors of America certified instructors. The entire family can learn together or polish their skills with a Family Private Lesson for a group of four to six people with a private instructor.

A family-friendly mountain with an 800-foot vertical, Camelback Mountain designates 18 of its 39 trails for beginners and 11 for intermediates; even the remainder marked for experts don't offer any hair-raising drops. Twenty of its 166 acres are devoted to terrain parks that offer more challenges to riders and freestylers. The 50-square-foot air bag eases the landing for practice jumps.

Introduced for the 2023/2024 season, the new 6-person Black Bear 6 lift whisks skiers and boarders from the base of the mountain to the summit in under 3 minutes, protected from the wind and weather by a bubble canopy.

On Friday and Saturday nights, all trails and parks are open until 10pm, and the super-sized tubing park is open until 9pm. The 40-lane park has a carpet lift.

About two hours from New York, Camelback is in the Poconos, a popular weekend getaway destination for both New York and Philadelphia residents.

Plattekill may be farther from New York than neighboring resorts of the Catskills, but for those who love powder, it's well worth the extra few minutes. Known as the powder capital of the Catskills , Plattekill is in a small box canyon with its own microclimate . Its 3,500-foot elevation, north-facing slopes, and position as the first high mountain east of Lake Ontario combine to take full advantage of the lake effect as storms roll in from the west.

Natural snowfall averages 175 inches per year , drawing serious skiers to its two peaks, which lie along a ridgeline with a 1,100-foot vertical drop. Another draw is that nearly half the 38 trails are rated for advanced and expert skiers, four of them double-black diamonds to take full advantage of the Catskills' most rugged terrain .

Only 20 percent of the trails are for beginners, but unlike many mountains, Plattekill has green runs from each of its summits, so everyone can enjoy the full mountain experience. Its 2-mile-long gentle cruisers are a real thrill for beginners who are usually limited to lower-mountain slopes and trails.

In addition to its dependable snow and rugged terrain, devoted Plattekill fans love its unique laid-back atmosphere.

Open only Friday through Sunday, and on weekdays following at least 12 inches of snowfall, Plattekill restricts the number of lift tickets each day to keep lines short for its two summit chairlifts.

Also uncrowded and one of the most wallet-friendly ski resorts in the Catskills, Belleayre Mountain has an impressive 1,404 feet of vertical, with 50 trails across 175 acres of mixed terrain. More than half the trails are for intermediates, with the rest split at about one-fifth each for beginners and experts.

Nine of the trails are rated double-black diamond. These trails and five glades are on the top half of the mountain, accessible from a midpoint, so you can spend a day skiing only the upper reaches. The longest run is over two miles long.

Boarders and freestylers will appreciate the terrain and progression parks, which include a rails-only park. More than nine kilometers of ungroomed cross-country trails into the Catskill Forest Preserve are free to use.

Trailways bus line offers round-trip ski packages from Port Authority that include transportation to the slopes and a lift ticket, at less than the cost of a lift ticket alone at most major ski resorts. Low-priced Frequent Skier Cards score skiers half-price lift tickets on weekdays, 25% reduction on weekends and holidays; these are also valid at Gore and Whiteface Mountains.

About three hours from the city, Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort is a self-contained ski area in the Berkshires, close to the Massachusetts-New York Border. Almost half the 45 trails are for beginners, combined with the excellent Terrain Based Learning program to make the resort a favorite for families .

The vertical rise of 1,150 feet and nine expert trails - three of which are rated double black diamond - keeps the mountain interesting for more experienced skiers; the longest run is more than two miles. Much of the 167 skiable acres is lighted for night skiing.

The three terrain parks are graded for progression, with one designed for younger children just learning to ride. A mountain coaster rounds out the outdoor activities.

Jiminy Peak gets 100 percent of its electrical power from renewable sources, primarily the giant wind turbine at the summit; it is the only ski area in North America with this distinction. An advantage for families is the ability to stay in the resort village right at the base, with family-sized condos in the Country Inn at Jiminy Peak , along with dining, shops, and other services.

Also in the Berkshires, and half in Massachusetts, Catamount straddles the state line, so you can ski in two states on a single run. Its vertical is 1,000 feet, and the terrain is varied enough for 10 expert runs and the Berkshires' longest, a 2.5-mile cruiser from the top.

The rest of the mountain is evenly divided between easy and intermediate trails, a dedicated learners' area, and three terrain parks. The 15 trails and the terrain park, a total of 55 acres, are lighted for night skiing and riding until 10pm on weekends and holidays. Snowmaking covers nearly 100 percent of the trails.

The Catamount Zip Tour has one of the longest ziplines in the country, at more than 5,000 feet. This is one of the few family-owned ski resorts remaining in New England.

Granted, Mohawk Mountain's 650-foot vertical may not provide the longest runs - the longest is Deer Run at 1.25 miles -- but it packs a surprising variety into 112 acres of ski terrain. Half of the 25 trails are for intermediate skiers, with 30 percent for beginners and 20 percent for advanced. Mohawk also has a separate learning area for beginners.

Sixteen trails, about one-third of the mountain, are lighted for night skiing, and all the trails are covered by snowmaking. Mohawk Mountain is located in Mohawk State Forest, at the southern end of the Berkshires, just over two hours from the George Washington Bridge.

If you long for more vertical, and your ideal ski weekend includes moonlight in Vermont , you can have it all, in a four-hour drive from the city. Mount Snow is the closest Vermont ski resort to New York City, lying not far from the Massachusetts border.

The location in the Green Mountains' snow zone promises an average annual snowfall of 156 inches. The addition of more than 250 high-output snow guns (the most of any North American ski resort) keeps trail conditions at their prime.

The mountain's 20 lifts, including the Bluebird Express, the East's first six-passenger bubble lift, access 80 trails networked across 588 acres. Intermediates are a high priority at Mount Snow, with 54 trails; beginners have an area of their own with slower lifts and can even ski from the summit on a long gentle cruiser.

Experts head for the North Face to ski its 10 expert trails and one double-black, served by two triple chairlifts. Boarders love the 10 terrain parks and a halfpipe.

Mount Snow is a Vail Resort, so your EPIC Pass is valid here, but all Vail Resorts are limiting daily tickets this season, so be sure to reserve in advance.

Free beginner ski and snowboard school and skiing an hour from New York City combine to make Mount Peter a winner for families. In the Hudson Valley, Mount Peter is also known for its all-mountain snowmaking and expert grooming, as well as night skiing on every one of its 10 trails, the terrain park, and beginners' area.

The terrain is well divided for all levels of skier, with two beginner trails (one from the summit), four options for experts, and four for intermediates. Learning skiers have a dedicated area with a carpet lift, and another carpet lift serves the tubing park . Two double chairlifts and a quad access the mountain trails.

The closest skiing to New York with 100 percent snowmaking , Campgaw Mountain also stands out as a premier learn-to-ski or snowboard destination. We’ll admit, as New Yorkers, Virginia is not the first place that comes to mind when you think about skiing, but one look at Massanutten Resort will change that. Known for being an excellent affordable option, the ski resort is popular with locals and travelers alike for its classes and activities, which include standards like zip lining, ice skating and snow tubing. Less standard options include a class on Ukulele for beginners, animal sketching, and meditation classes, and this family-friendly resort also boasts an Indoor Water Park to keep the little ones busy off the slopes. When you are looking to shred, riders at Massanutten can jump on seven lifts and will find 70 skiable acres and 14 runs—meaning it’s smaller than a lot of resorts on this list in size but is a great option for first timers and families who don’t want to get lost from each other.

13. Camelback, Pennsylvania

The Poconos are full of winter wilderness vibes that will make even the most hardened New Yorker feel like a giddy kid on a snow day. Located about 90 minutes from Manhattan, the region is known for Camelback and also neighboring Shawnee mountain, which is close enough that you could hit both on the same day. Camelback boasts 39 ski trails on 166 acres while Shawnee features 23 trails on 125 acres of skiing terrain. If you don’t ski, the Poconos offer snow tubing , dogsledding and ice-skating —plus plenty of options for less active types too. After a busy morning, you deserve a hearty meal, like the disco fries and s’mores at Trails End Pub & Grille (which also offers outdoor dining).

14. Belleayre, New York

In Ulster County, where the Catskills meet the Hudson River, you’ll find wooded country roads that wind past barns, farm stands, antique shops and wineries into sleepy hamlets full of Victorian architecture and small-town charm. Skiers here can enjoy one of New York State’s best family-friendly mountains, which boasts eight lifts (including a high-speed gondola, more of a rarity in the Northeast), 174 skiable acres, 50 trails and four fun lodges. Non-skiers will love spending a day in nearby Woodstock , the artsy town that’s mandated to retain the hippyish roots it’s famous for. Nowadays, you’ll find everything from a mezcal bar to home-decor stores and even a toy shop stocked with creative gifts (like a selfie kit for your pets). At night, the place to be is Silvia (Snatch a res on Resy), offering seasonally-focused foods and tasty libations for both indoor and outdoor seating, plus pick-up.

15. Whiteface Mountain, New York

We love escaping to upstate New York whenever we need a break from the city and the winter months are no exception. Whiteface Mountain Resort in Wilmington hosted the 1980 Winter Olympics so you’d better believe that the trails here are top-notch. In fact, Whiteface boasts the tallest vertical drop on the eastern seaboard (at 3,430 feet), plus 90 trails and 11 lifts. Did we mention it’s also the mountain for winter visitors to Lake Placid, the storybook-like destination town just 30 minutes away?

In recent seasons, new high-speed quads have replaced two double chair lifts, providing access to all four of its peaks and Straight Brook Valley.

17. Mohawk Mountain, Connecticut

And for non-skiers, there’s showshoeing and show tubing available. The best part? It’s only 2 hours and 15 minutes from the city.

Though skiing is not the first thing that comes to mind when you think of New York, there are more than 50 ski resorts in driving distance from New York City. The further you are willing to drive, the smaller the crowds and the larger the mountains. Don't underestimate New York's vibrant ski culture. Stores in the region have top gear and cost-effective seasonal rental programs for children. 

New Jersey. Though not know for its vertical, NJ makes for an easy day trip. Campgaw is a treat for young learners and their parents. If you can navigate the crowds, Mountain Creek  has the most vertical and the most terrain in proximity to NYC. It also has night skiing and a racing program. Fun fact, many seasoned skiers, including our Founder, got started at Mountain Creek. 

Poconos, PA.   The Poconos are ~1.5 - 2 hours away with many ski areas including Blue Mountain, Shawnee, Camelback, Montage, Jack Frost, Big Boulder and Elk Mountain. Our two favorites are Camelback for families and Elk Mountain for more advanced terrain. 

Catskills, NY.   During the 2020-21 season, our NYC-based team members found themselves spending more time here because of the New York and Vermont quarantine travel restrictions. Located about 2.5 - 3 hours driving from NYC, the Hunter-Tannersville area is home to four “sizable” resorts with unique character —  Belleayre , Windham , Hunter Mountain , and Plattekill. While any of them are doable for a day trip, the area has plenty to keep you well fed and entertained, and we prefer to take a few days and visit several resorts.

​Berkshires and Beyond. For a long weekend, the Berkshires stretching across western New England are home to Butternut and Berkshire East. Catamount , located about 2.5 hours driving from NYC on the border with Massachusetts in Hillsdale, NY, is the closest of the Berkshires, and has great learning facilities, steeper areas and terrain parks.  The Connecticut ski areas of Ski Sundown, Mohawk, Mt. Southington, and Powder Ridge are also very family friendly.

Southern Vermont & Upstate New York .   Four hours driving distance from NYC is where things start to get really good. Choose from Whiteface or  Gore Mountain in the Adirondacks of upstate New York, or Stratton , Magic Mountain , Mount Snow, and Bromley in southern Vermont. Going just a little further into Vermont also opens access to Okemo and Killington .

Northern Vermont.   If you have the time and are feeling adventurous, the six hour car ride to northern Vermont will take you to some of New England’s finest ski resorts including  Sugarbush , Stowe , and Smugglers’ Notch . With steep runs, tight trees, and buckets of lake effect snow these places can even compete with major resorts out west.

Mountain Creek, NJ

Best for Proximity to NYC with Vertical

Travel Time: ~1.25-1.5 hours from NYC

Overview .   It's not hard to find skiers who hate on Mountain Creek. It's crowded, wild, icy, expensive, and filled with human cannonballs, they say. They say all of this because it's all true.

But they are missing a set of immutable facts: Mountain Creek is a huge, modern resort, with high-speed lifts, a dirt-cheap season pass, 1,000 vertical feet, outstanding snowmaking, and proximity to the largest city in America.

A bit of history : Mountain Creek's modern infrastructure is partially a function of a brief ownership by Intrawest. Though Intrawest sold the resort long before morphing into Alterra Mountain Company, the current owners, Snow Operating, continue to invest heavily. Today's resort is the combination of two historic ski areas — Vernon Valley and Great Gorge.

Bottom line , understand what Mountain Creek is and where it is, and plan around that. This is not some hidden secret - it's the closest large ski area to the largest city in America. You're going to have to share it. If you have a full day, go to the Catskills. Mountain Creek is best experienced in doses.

Getting To : Drive; Mountain Creek is ~50 miles and ~1 hour from the George Washington Bridge. The most reliable route is NJ-4 west to NJ-208 north to I-287 south to NJ-23 north, then a right on Stockholm Vernon Rd (County Road 515). Then a left on NJ-94 south and the resort is on the left. Parking is on the right. Keep going past the first parking lot and turn right into South Lodge, two miles down the road.

Special Programs : Snow Operating invented the Terrain-Based Learning system, a progressive teaching method that dozens of resorts use.

Also, the cabriolet, an open-air stand-up gondola, is one of the silliest lifts in America

The only ski area within an hour of NYC that has this kind of vertical (1,000 feet+) or this range of terrain

Though there is nothing overly steep, the runs are long and interesting, especially before the crowds arrive

One of the largest footprints in the Northeast, measuring nearly two miles along highway 94

Night skiing is available every day and on all of the terrain. This is one of our favorite ways to visit this resort in the spring

Top-notch snowmaking capabilities. Coverage is 100% of the mountain, more than making up for what is probably less than 2 feet of snow annually

South Peak is a giant terrain park; every run can translate into endless combinations of jumps and rails

INSIDER TIPS

When the line at the Cabriolet is long, you can sometimes ski right onto the triple chair — beware though, the triple is the slowest lift on the mountain

The Vernon Peak parking lot is one of the most congested and ill-conceived on the East Coast. For Vernon Peak, drive another 200 yards and turn right on Sand Hill Road, where the massive parking lot on the left is usually sparse; your walk up to the bridge over highway 94 will also be much shorter

South Peak doesn't open until noon on weekdays; get some corduroy on your lunch break if you live nearby

When lines are long at South Peak, the Granite Peak chair is often a far-less-congested alternative

Passes:  Season passes typically go on sale around Presidents' Day Week and include the rest of the current season and all of the next. If you miss pass sales, get the Triple Play card , a no-blackout, three-day pass that starts at less than $100; Mountain Creek is not part of any megapass.

Elk Mountain, PA

Best for Natural Snowfall

Travel Time: ~3 hours drive from NYC

Overview .   Elk Mountain's slogan used to be "It's like skiing in Vermont, without the drive!". That might make some Vermont locals angry, but it's a fair assessment for one of Pennsylvania's best mountains. The mountain is ~3 hours drive from NYC, making it doable for a day trip. Elk doesn't offer on-mountain lodging if you're planning on staying the night, but does list a variety of properties located near the ski area . Elk has a different feel from the established resorts located closer to New York City. Elk is best suited for intermediate to advanced skiers that are looking to push their skills past the hills of the Poconos. With 1,000' of vertical, decent natural snowfall, and steeps- you might just feel like you're skiing in Vermont.

Getting To : Drive, parking is free; Take I-80 W to I-380 N to I-81N. Take Exit 206 from I-81N to PA-374 E. Take PA-374 E to Elk Mountain.

Special Programs : Buy a season pass as early as possible. Elk's season pass rates increase once the season starts.

There are plenty of ski areas closer to NYC

The mountain is better-suited for intermediate and advanced skiers

The are no lodging options at the resort

Challenging and fun terrain await you at Elk. You won't find trails like this anywhere else in PA

Avoid the crowds. The extra hour's drive from NYC is well worth it to thin out the crowds that you will find at Camelback, Shawnee or Jack Frost

Lift tickets are less expensive than other Poconos mountains. Tickets start at $69 for adults on weekends

Camelback, PA

Best for Convenience & Family Fun

Travel Time: ~1.5 hours from NYC

Overview .   Camelback Mountain is by no means the largest ski resort in the region, but it's plenty to keep you entertained for the day. The resort offers lesson options for skiers and riders of all abilities. The waterpark is also a big draw and Camelback can get busy during peak hours. Enjoy empty slopes on their vast night-skiing terrain.

Camelback features 800' of vertical, 39 trails, and 100% coverage for snowmaking and night-skiing. Advanced skiers will have fun carving despite the short vertical. Beginners and Intermediates are given a variety of routes, including the resort's longest trail 'Nile Mile'.

Camelback is within a day-trip distance of NYC, but guests may want to stay longer. The resort has several lodging options, and an indoor waterpark to keep the kiddos happy after a day on the slopes.

Getting To : Drive, general parking is $10/day; Take I-80 W to PA-715 N (Exit 299), Take PA-715 N to Sullivan Trail to Camelback Rd.

Special Programs : Stop by the local ski/board shops on your way to the mountain. They have more affordable rentals and sometimes even offer discounted lift tickets.

Crowds. Camelback is no secret and crowds can clog Camelback's beginner and intermediate terrain

Lift tickets are pricey on the weekends. An average lift ticket will cost around $80

The natural snowfall at Camelback doesn't compare to resorts further north

Camelback is one of the closest ski resorts to NYC at only 1.5 hours away by car (~85 miles)

The ski school program at Camelback is suited for any skiing ability

High-speed quad chairlifts prevent the lift lines from getting too long

Night Skiing here is a fun way to get more turns and add variety to après

High-quality snowmaking keeps Camelback in decent shape, even through less than ideal conditions.

Hunter Mountain, NY

Best for Steeper Terrain

Travel Time: ~2.5-3 hours from NYC

Hunter might be the poster child for the statement "If you can ski the East, you can ski anywhere." The mountain features a 1,600-foot vertical drop and offers a wide range of terrain, although the steepest runs, such as Westway and Annapurna — only open after sustained snowfall. Its variable weather patterns and conditions keep you on your toes, but its excellent teaching program can prepare you in spades. 

The Hunter-Tannersville area is an increasingly attractive place to visit, with new cuisine such as Prospect and lodging such as Scribner's Catskill Lodge, opening each season. Hunter is on the  Epic Pass , convenient for those in the New York area who also enjoy skiing out West and/or further North. 

Getting To : 2.5- 3 hours from NYC: take I-87 to exit 20 then NY-32A to Hunter Mountain. Parking is free. There are also regular buses for day trips from NYC.

Hunter's proximity to NYC means it can be very crowded on the weekends. Lift lines can be long and trails may even feel crowded

Grooming is done daily, but the volume of skiers quickly makes that a thing of the past. Frequent rain and sleet can slick up the place

Vermont quality runs, but without the Vermont drive

The Hunter-Tannersville area is undergoing a renaissance with increasing options for dining, après and off-mountain activities for the whole family

With snow-making coverage on 100% of its terrain, you are guaranteed to get your runs in no matter how bad the season. Fun fact, Huner Mountain was the first ski resort in New York State to install snow-making

Top Trails. Beginner — Mossy Brook; Intermediate — Belt Parkway; Advanced — Hellgate

For the kids.  Head over to Scribner's Catskill Lodge to enjoy the ice skating rink, beautiful grounds and fire pit with s'mores to roast

Favorite Dining. Prospect  for locally sourced cuisine in a spectacular setting 

Favorite Après Spot.  With hundreds of beers and cheeses, Last Chance Tavern also has live music and the best atmosphere around

Where to Stay. For a relaxing, cozy stay,  Scribner's Catskill Lodge  is directly across the street from the resort. A little further afield with a more boutique feel, consider the Deer Mountain Inn

Windham, NY

Best for Family Weekend Getaways

Travel Time: ~3 hours from NYC

Many New Yorkers have learned to ski at Windham, and it's easy to see why: this is a family-friendly resort with good terrain and snowmaking covering 97% of the runs — all a straight shot from various points in the state. The base has been spruced up in recent years and feels pretty spiffy (it also features a couple of cool food trucks parked right off the lifts, always a welcome sight). The layout is easy to navigate and well marked, making it difficult to wander into trouble, especially since the double blacks are all tucked away on the west side of the mountain. Windham is also part of the Ikon Pass, offering 7 days on the full pass and 5 on the base pass.

A quarter mile from the resort, the Windham Mountain Adventure Park offers tubing and age-appropriate snowmobiles where kid can ride on an oval track.

Getting To : Three hours from NYC: take I-87 to exit 21 then NY-23 to Windham Mountain. Parking is free. There are also regular buses for day trips from NYC.

Special Programs : Windham offers an introduction to Alpine touring for $50. The guided session includes Rossignol equipment and an uphill travel ticket. Children and teenagers (until 19) more interested in speed should check out the racing program ($2,299-$2,499).

For great convenience, load your lift card or pass with "Snow Dough" and use it to pay for anything on-mountain.

Weekends can be a mad house, though Windham remains more chill than Hunter

All trail names start with W so pay close attention to the trail map if you're new to Windham

Ski Butternut, MA

Best for Families with Young Children

Overview .   Ski Butternut (also simply known as "Butternut") is a beautiful, smaller ski resort in the heart of the Berkshires. Still privately owned and operated, Butternut has a distinctly "family" feel - their slogan is "Where Families Go to Play in the Snow!" With 22 trails, there's enough variety to satisfy all but those who only want to pound black diamonds all day. In other words, it's a perfect ski area for a family with young kids. "Never-evers," beginners and intermediates will enjoy Butternut's mellow trails. With snow-making on 100% of it's terrain, there's usually plenty of snow. Terrain park enthusiasts will love the Twisted Terrain Park. Butternut is just a 5 minute drive into Great Barrington, MA where you can find plenty of shopping along with inns and Airbnb options. 

Special Programs : Ski Butternut during weekdays for only $25 . Uphilling is permitted in select areas at specific times , details here .

Getting To : Almost equidistant from Boston & New York City, set your GPS to "Butternut Basin" and enjoy a beautiful ~2.5-3 hour drive. Parking is free and the walk from your car to the lifts is short.

This is not the spot for steeps and challenges, but most people will enjoy Butternut's 1,000' vertical and fun trails

As with any smaller ski resorts, there's not as much variety in food offerings as at larger resorts

With top-to-bottom snow-making, the trails tend to be in good shape, even when the New England weather does not cooperate

Designated easy area for "never-evers," is secluded from faster skiers; parents can relax knowing the kids are safe here

Top notch lessons for skiing and snowboarding in both group and private arrangements

Overview .   Catamount is a solid ski area in the Berkshires and offers some steeper terrain generally more characteristic of Southern Vermont. Located near the New York-Massachusetts state line, it's an easy drive from New York City and its surrounding suburbs, making for a doable day trip. Gore Mountain, NY

Travel Time: ~4 hours from NYC

Gore Mountain is the biggest resort by acreage in New York state, and easily holds its own in the Northeast. Yet this spot in the Adirondacks remains under the radar and draws about the same crowds as Whiteface (i.e., none on weekdays), and a lot less than its marquee-name neighbors in Vermont. Add a low-key vibe, good terrain, comparatively cheap lift tickets, and you have a hill worthy of affection.

Experts will enjoy the fairly tight glades as well as the 'Rumor and Lies', a pair of steep double-black faces. But at heart Gore, which is spread over seven areas, is paradise for intermediates, with many long, wide cruisers that help build skills and confidence (more advanced skiers will love ripping down those groomers, especially on weekdays when the trails are empty and you can carve big turns).

The hill is fairly easy to navigate and well marked — you aren't likely to end up in tricky spots by mistake — and the return area is wide enough to avoid traffic jams. On chilly days, make a pit stop at the Straight Brook Lodge, off of the Straight Brook chair: It's the old gondola unloading station, converted into a warming shelter with vending machines and bathrooms.

Getting To : Located in North Creek, NY, four hours from NYC and 90 minutes from Albany, Gore is 20 minutes from exit 23 on I-87. There is plenty of free parking (with shuttle buses from the more remote lots to the base lodge) as well as premium for $20/day.

Special Programs : Fun programs for midweek adult skiers include Ladies Escape (Wednesdays) and Secret Society of Skiers (Thursdays). A season-long program for kids 7-12 features four-hour sessions (three hours during Covid) every weekend.

Not only is the SKI3 season pass valid at Gore, Belleayre and Whiteface, but it includes discounts on dining, retail and repairs, as well as one free non-holiday ticket and one half-price non-holiday ticket for friends.

Luckily, for many people who live in East Coast cities like Boston and New York, numerous ski resorts are a short drive away. You can be skiing down early-morning corduroy or ripping through powder just a couple hours after getting in your car. Ski Resorts Near New York City

Windham mountain , new york.

Located in the Northern Catskills, about two hours from New York City, Windham offers family-friendly fun with 50 runs and 285 acres of skiable terrain. The summit provides picturesque views of the Little Gap Valley, right beside the Pocono Mountains. 

A few honorable mentions are Mount Snow and Gore Mountain . Mount Snow, in West Dover, Vermont, and Gore Mountain, in North Creek, New York, are a bit more of a hike, taking at least 4 hours by car from New York City. However, they do remain popular among New Yorkers for weekend trips or longer stays. Other well-known ski areas, like Bristol Mountain in the Finger Lakes Region, and Whiteface Mountain in Lake Placid, host of the 1980 Winter Olympics, are several hours away, and better to fly to.

A few weeks ago, I was walking in New York City when I overheard two friends parting ways. "Let me know if you ever want to go snowboarding together!" one said, mid-hug. "It'd be nice to finally get the ski trip out of the group chat."

I laughed because anyone who's trying to plan a group ski trip with friends knows how hard it is to stop talking about it and actually book it. A ski trip isn't just another beach vacation or cabin getaway—there's a lot to account for. Just getting out of the city is a feat in and of itself. Then, there's ability levels and budgets and those friends who don't actually want to ski at all and are there just for the après scene. (Not that there's anything wrong with that!)

Rather than trying to wrangle all your friends to fly across the country for a week on the slopes, book a trip closer to home. There's a flurry of ski resorts well within driving distance of New York City with something everyone can enjoy—even those who have no intentions of ever clipping into a snowboard or ski binding whatsoever.

Or, you can swap the downhill action for a mellow winter stroll at the mountains cross-country and snowshoe center, where you can enjoy the winter wonderland at your leisure.

Afterwards, book yourself a massage at the resort's slope-side Alpine Spa, which includes access to its steam room and sauna. Then, go straight to après at the Umbrella Bar, where you can sit and sip amidst a panoramic view of the mountain action.

The Catskills aren't your only outlet for adventure—there's also the Berkshires, which are home to the fabulously fun Jiminy Peak . A 3.5-hour drive from NYC in Hancock, MA, this sprawling ski hill spans 167 acres with 45 trails, nine lifts, and a 1,150 vertical drop from the summit. If the Frozen lyrics, "The cold never bothered me anyway," resonate with you, then Whiteface is your place. Located in Wilmington, NY, the Adirondack mountain is no joke—and not just because it gets really freakin' cold. It's the highest ski resort in New York with the greatest vertical drop east of the Rockies. It's also been home to  two  winter olympics and continues to be a wintery paradise, spanning 94 trails over three peaks.

Now, if you're just along for the hot cocoa, you're in luck. Pop into the Cloudspin Bar & Grill for traditional après bites, like poutine and mac n' cheese, or cozy up to a Belgian waffle and coffee at the Waffle Cabin. Whiteface is also 15 minutes away from the Lake Placid, which—contrary to popular belief—has plenty to do besides winter sports. The less adventurous can take in the sights on a scenic gondola ride, which drops you off at the Peak Lodge which is just as pretty as it sounds. After that, pamper yourself at the Killington Grand Spa, where the most extreme thing you'll participate in is a Black Diamond Sports Massage. Round-out the night with a little après at the Wobbly Barn, which turns into a nightclub after 9 p.m.

Where to stay: Since it's a bit further than other resorts on this list, do yourself a favor and stay on-site at the Killington Grand Resort Hotel. The stunning property sits at the base of the mountain and is a stone's throw from mountain activities and offers plenty to do on the wellness front. Bretton Woods - Carroll, NH - 6 hours away

A 6-hour drive is a hike, but Bretton Woods is worth it. Situated in New Hampshire's breathtaking White Mountains, it's home to 464 acres ripe for alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, snowboarding, tubing, and more. You don't have to ski to see Mount Washington—hop in a horse-drawn carriage for a relaxing sleigh ride, ride the scenic gondola, or turn up the thrill with a winter zip line above the hemlock trees. Stowe - Stowe, VT - 6 hours away

Stowe is another 6-hour drive from New York city, but you won't mind once you get there. The iconic Vermont ski resort (which is on the Epic pass, too) boasts a vertical drop of 2,360 vertical feet and spans 485 skiable acres, 116 trails, and 12 lifts. Stowe shares a mountain with Smugglers' Notch, so skiers have plenty ski-able options to get their fill.

And those who are cool taking a couple laps (or... not) and then heading to the bar? You'll be covered, too. Wander around Spruce Peak Village down below and go ice skating or stop in Whistlepig, a craft distillery, for a boozy drink or warm mug of cider. Bring your appetite—there's tons  of dining options in the village, too, from warm, cheesy raclette to Japanese food.

Where to stay:  For ski-in/ski-out access, stay at the Lodge at Spruce Peak. This will keep everyone entertained, especially those who'd rather chill by the fireplace than shred the slopes. If you don't stay there, though, be sure to at least check out the spa and book yourself a treatment and check out the grounds. The Stowe Cider Scrub looks to die for, and uses apple pulp to give your skin a glow. Or, stay closer to home at Stratton (another Ikon mountain), which is located in the southern part of Vermont. The snow bus is the way.

What more can you ask for? They pick you up, they bring you to the mountain, you skip the lines because you are technically in a group. Rental and lift ticket are no brainers. No driving, no parking. Just crash in the bus on the way back after an awesome snow day and you are back home for dinner. Seriously, trying to figure out how to get there, renting a car or carpooling or whatever would be a nightmare. The snow bus is the way.

But it’s possible to hop on a train at Grand Central Station and be hitting the slopes in less than two hours. You can also catch buses from a number of places throughout the city that will whisk you away to some surprisingly good ski resorts and get you home in time for a late dinner. And if you’ve got a car, the only limit to your ski adventures is how many hours you’re willing to spend behind the wheel. Here are some of our top picks for skiing day trips from New York City.

Mountain Creek

An hour’s drive from the George Washington Bridge in Vernon Township, New Jersey, Mountain Creek is the closest ski area to NYC. It is beloved by generations of New York skiers who knew it as Great Gorge and then Vernon Valley. Boasting eight lifts, a 1,040-foot vertical rise and 167 skiable acres across four interconnected peaks, Mountain Creek is big enough to make you forget you’re in New Jersey. It also has night skiing on all 46 trails and 100% snowmaking coverage, ensuring good conditions even in non-snowy winters.

Thunder Ridge Ski Area

With three chairlifts, four magic carpets and 22 trails, Thunder Ridge in Patterson, New York, is a great ski area for families. But what really sets it apart is its convenience. Guests can board the Metro North Ski Train at Grand Central Station, get off in Patterson, and catch a free shuttle right to the slopes. The lifts run until 9 p.m. every day but Sunday, and the resort’s snowmaking system covers 100% of the terrain.

Hunter Mountain Resort

The resort most closely associated with NYC, Hunter sits just over two hours away in the scenic Catskill Mountains . Among the largest of New York state’s ski areas, Hunter has an impressive 1,600-foot vertical drop, three terrain parks and 67 trails spread out across 320 skiable acres. Famed for its snowmaking innovations, Hunter was the first resort in the world to install base-to-summit snowmaking, in 1968, and the first to achieve 100% coverage, in 1980. Weekends can get famously crowded, so try to ski on a weekday if you can.

Windham Mountain

Another 1,600-vertical-foot Catskills resort, Windham has 11 lifts serving 54 trails with a combined 285 skiable acres. Snowmaking covers 97% of the area, including Windham’s six terrain parks. The terrain parks run the gamut, from the beginner-friendly Wraparound Park to the advanced features of Wilbur Park and Jib Park.

Belleayre Mountain

A third, less crowded Catskills option, Belleayre Mountain in Highmount, New York, has a 1,404-foot vertical and 171 skiable acres. Skiers have access to 50 trails, eight lifts (including the Catskill Thunder Gondola), two terrain parks and an X-course. Snowmaking covers 96% of the terrain, which includes slopes for every level of skier.

Mohawk Mountain

Connecticut’s largest ski area, Mohawk Mountain , in Cornwall, sits about two hours away from Manhattan. It boasts a 960-foot vertical drop and 26 trails covering 112 skiable acres. The area is serviced by five triple chairs and four magic carpets, making it a great option for families. And snowmaking covers 99% of the terrain, so you’re guaranteed quality coverage. The resort even has night skiing if you’re not in a hurry to get back to the city.

Camelback Mountain Resort

Less than two hours from Manhattan in Pennsylvania’s Pocono Mountains, Camelback features 39 trails across 166 skiable acres and 800 feet of vertical. The resort, in Tannersville, Pennsylvania, also has the country’s largest snow-tubing park, with 42 lanes. Snowmaking covers 100% of the terrain, and three on-mountain restaurants keep guests fueled up for their skiing adventures.

New York City: secret skier's paradise? Well… we wouldn't go that far, but did you know that New York has more ski areas than other state in America, 44, at last count? (Yes, that's more than California, or Colorado). And Southern Vermont has another dozen or so, all within easy weekend ski trip distance from NYC.

So if you are looking to take a nice romantic weekend getaway or are interested in a wonderful winter day trip from NYC to points north and snowy… albeit often machine-made these ski ideas are some of most reliably-excellent excursions, embarking from all over town, to a variety of mountains, with varying degrees of amenities and add-ons. 

Emilio's Ski Shop 

For quantity, variety, and accessibility, it's tough to beat the day ski trips organized by Emilio's Ski Shop, who started these trips 50 years ago! Five-six morning trips scheduled a week, Emilio's boards busloads of skiers and snowboarders from all over Manhattan including: Forest Hills, Cobble Hill, Bay Ridge, the Upper East Side for day trips to Okemo, Hunter, Windham, Bromley, Gore and more. Meet in front of the centrally-located Paragon just north of Union Square every Saturday, Sunday, and Wednesday, and for $84 you get a luxury bus (with breakfast and movies) and a ski lift ticket to either Hunter or Windham. Weekend ski trip packages from New York City are little less common, especially ones as well organized as Mark and Marina's Upper West Side , non-for-profit, just-for-fun venture, The Ski and Snowboard Club in NYC. New York City during the holidays is aglitter with mesmerizing window displays and decor, some of the country’s best seasonal dance and theater shows, and—as anyone who lives here is well aware—lots (and lots) of tourists. As the crowds descend upon Rockefeller Center to see the Christmas tree or swarm Union Square for their holiday shopping, we don’t blame New Yorkers for pushing aside visions of sugar plums to make room for dreams of getting out of town until after the New Year.

Luckily, NYC is well-situated for many a winter weekend getaway , whether you’re craving snow-filled paradises for winter sports , charming Connecticut hamlets, or wellness meccas in western Massachusetts. We’ve combed the entire radius surrounding the Big Apple to find the absolute top-notch spots that are perfect for a quick trip away from the hustle and bustle. Just make sure you have your snow boots, flannels, and … a car. Remember those?

Lake Placid, New York

As a two-time home to the Winter Olympics (in 1932 and 1980), it’s hard to argue that Lake Placid isn’t the East Coast champion for snow sports. And, with the Lake Placid Olympic Center newly remodeled and reopened, this winter is an especially auspicious time to visit. Activities at the facilities include indoor and outdoor ice skating, speed skating sessions, as well as events like the Adirondack Winter Invitational for college hockey players.

But, the Center is far from the only winter sports hub in town here. The nearby Whiteface Mountain has over 90 trails spanning 25 miles and covering three peaks and is especially notable for boasting the greatest vertical drop on the East Coast. And, if that’s not enough for adrenaline junkies, you can also rocket down tracks at the Lake Placid Bobsled Experience or (in warmer months) tackle the longest mountain coaster in the USA, the heart-pumping Cliffside Coaster . After you’ve had your fill of snow and ice, you can stroll Main Street to pick up new ski gear or stock up on gorgeously scented candles and lotions from Pure Placid . We love the Mount Marcy , scented with citrus, basil, and sandalwood.

A straight shot up I-87 followed by a 40-mile stretch on NY 73W, Lake Placid is about a five-hour drive north of New York City. While the island has golf courses, boutique shopping and courts for petanque (a French game similar to bocce ball), undoubtedly the best thing to do here is nothing at all.

To get here, start by taking the Long Island Rail Road commuter train to Greenport, then board the North Ferry to Shelter Island. Alternatively, you can get here by driving to Sag Harbor and then loading your car onto the South Ferry. For lodging, Shelter Island offers a handful of small hotels, vacation rentals and B&Bs.

This port town, located on the southern tip of Aquidneck Island and about 180 miles northeast of New York, is famous for its miles of pristine shoreline, upscale boutiques and ornate Gilded Age mansions, which you can ogle on a trolley tour . It is also lauded as one of the world's premier sailing destinations.

While here, gain your sea legs aboard a boat tour of Newport Harbor, or get your steps in on part of the Cliff Walk, a scenic 3.5-mile pathway that runs along Newport's eastern shore. Then, engage in some well-deserved retail therapy along Thames Street, which is lined with a plethora of shops and restaurants. Five hours or less

This quiet village in upstate New York (around 300 miles north of New York City) is less crowded than the popular Lake Placid, making Saranac Lake an excellent choice for a weekend getaway from the city. Take advantage of this stunning lake by getting out on the water in a canoe or kayak, then get your heart pumping on the 3.7-mile Bloomingdale Bog Trail. For an extra dose of history, the Saranac Laboratory Museum showcases Saranac's interesting past as a tuberculosis treatment destination. Downtown, you'll also find a variety of shops, restaurants and art galleries to keep you occupied for hours, plus little ones will enjoy the Adirondack Carousel, which runs Friday through Sunday.

Saranac Lake is also a popular winter destination thanks to its plethora of outdoor sports (think: snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and ice fishing) and traditional winter activities such as the annual Saranac Lake Winter Carnival, which takes place every February. The event also features a fireworks display and multiple parades. When it comes to lodging, visitors will mostly find cozy cabins and B&Bs here, but a handful of luxury hotels are available as well. For the ultimate in comfort, book your stay at Hotel Saranac, a historic property with modern amenities.

Famous for its slew of historic landmarks, monuments and museums (many of which are free to enter), Washington, D.C., has long appealed to historians and politicos. However, there's more to the nation's capital than meets the eye. With more than 20 neighborhoods to explore and innumerable things to do , Washington is a treasure chest waiting to be unlocked. Find killer nightlife and impeccable dining in the Shaw and U Street area, upscale shopping in Georgetown, charming 19th-century row houses in Dupont Circle, and a bevy of historic attractions on Capitol Hill.

If you're only visiting for the weekend, expect an action-packed schedule. Start by hitting up one of the city's first-rate museums: The National Museum of Natural History, National Museum of African American History and Culture, United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and the National Gallery of Art are a few traveler favorites. Located roughly 225 miles southwest of NYC, Washington is an easy drive by car or bus. However, the best way to get here is by train. Take Amtrak's high-speed Acela or Northeast Regional train to Union Station and shed up to 90 minutes off your travel time. Plus, because Washington frequently plays host to celebrities, politicians and business tycoons, there are plenty of top-notch accommodations to choose from once you arrive. For a luxurious stay, book a room at The Jefferson , a sophisticated property with European flair plus a restaurant and a cocktail bar on-site. An added bonus? The Jefferson is located only a mile away from the National Mall, so you'll be right where the action is.

Bordering Boston Harbor and Massachusetts Bay, New England's largest city sits 215 miles northeast of New York City; travelers can opt to travel here by car, bus or train. Whether you're drawn here by the cobblestone streets, the historic landmarks or the city's strong baseball roots (a visit to Fenway Park for a game or behind-the-scenes tour can't be missed), Boston has all the ingredients you need for a memorable weekend getaway – just remember to pack your walking shoes .

After you've successfully trekked the 2.5-mile Freedom Trail (or hop-on, hop-off bus tour) to some of Boston's most famed attractions – including the Paul Revere House, Old North Church and Faneuil Hall Marketplace – find a shady spot to rest in Boston Common or the Boston Public Garden. For a dose of culture, check out the Museum of Fine Arts Boston and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, which features landscaped gardens and an extensive collection of European, Asian and American art. New York's Finger Lakes – a collection of 11 lakes that includes the popular shorelines of Seneca Lake, Skaneateles Lake and Cayuga Lake – are revered for their spectacular water sports opportunities, scenic state parks and top-notch wine. As one of the chief wine regions in the country and the largest wine-producing area in the state of New York, the Finger Lakes region has earned its reputation as a top destination for romantic weekend getaways.

For short stays in the Finger Lakes, following the Seneca Lake Wine Trail is the best way to see a lot of local wineries in a little amount of time. With nearly 30 wineries and several restaurants set along the route, the trail is perfect for leisurely car rides in the countryside (just be sure to assign a designated driver ahead of time). Opt for a refreshing riesling, the region's signature wine, or expand your palate on a tasting tour.

Meanwhile, nature lovers should head to Robert H. Treman State Park or Watkins Glen State Park for a chance to see breathtaking waterfalls. If you're looking for a small-town atmosphere with local shops and museums, you can't go wrong with Skaneateles Lake. Here, you'll also find a variety of charming B&Bs and inns like the Mirbeau Inn & Spa , a traveler favorite. Other top lodging options in the Finger Lakes region include the Inns of Aurora and The Statler Hotel at Cornell University , both of which offer easy access to Cayuga Lake.

A quick flight

If you're willing to hop on a short flight (or take a bus tour), you can enjoy a weekend marveling at one of the most beautiful and impressive natural wonders of the world: Niagara Falls. Niagara Falls is less than a two-hour flight from New York City – and, while this powerful waterfall is sure to take your breath away, it isn't the only reason to plan a weekend getaway to the area. With beautiful botanical gardens, wineries and casinos, this famous tourist town has everything you need for a fun-filled weekend away. Take advantage of both the American and Canadian sides of the Niagara River by bringing your passport with you.

For a classic Niagara Falls experience, don a poncho and board the Maid of the Mist boat tour. This famed attraction is one of the best ways to see the falls up close, but it's impossible to guarantee you won't get wet. If you'd rather view the falls from a drier and less crowded vantage point, head to the observation deck of the Skylon Tower. Thrill-seekers can also experience the falls on Journey Behind the Falls, which takes participants directly behind the thunderous waterfall, or on an exhilarating jet boat tour. When it's time to turn in, visitors on the American side of the falls can book their stay at Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino , while Ontario-based guests spend a cozy night in the well-appointed Harbour House Hotel .

While we can never quit NYC, with its  amazing restaurants , internationally-recognized bars and world-class museums , the crowds, the hustle and the pace, however, can lead to some serious stress and, well, sometimes we need a weekend trip.

Fortunately, the location of our fine city affords easy access to many other exciting, yet more relaxed destinations. These weekend getaways from NYC offer fun, relaxation and a little something different not too far from home.

Whether you’re taking a car or public transportation, these destinations are easily accessible in five hours or less. Enjoy nature, chill by a lake, take in some art or do a little shopping. From quaint towns to beachy locales, a weekend away will be just the thing to recharge. If you don’t have a whole weekend to spare, consider one of these day trips from NYC . Looking for a longer getaway? A road trip from NYC might be for you. But these weekend getaways are just right, opening up a whole new world in upstate New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and more.

1.  Bear Mountain, NY

In the time it would take to make it across town during rush hour, adventurers can get to Bear Mountain for an easy escape from city madness.

Do this: The state park, situated in the mountains rising from the west bank of the Hudson River, which offers a bevy of hiking and biking trails, as well as picnic groves, lake and river fishing access, a swimming pool and a zoo.

Stay here: Bear Mountain Inn , originally built in 1915, hosted Eleanor Roosevelt, Harry Truman and Dwight Eisenhower back in the day, and has been extensively renovated to include 15 luxury guest rooms, plus a spa and a restaurant. 

2.  Asbury Park, NJ

The summertime gay community in this shore town has actually been active since the 1950s—and over the past few years, the scene’s really heated up.

Eat here: MOGO Korean Fusion Tacos, a favorite among both visitors and locals. 

Stay here: Berkeley Oceanfront Hotel , which was originally designed by noted Beaux Arts architect Whitney Warren.

3.  Beacon, NY

Beacon is steeped in history (Beacon Mountain, the tallest point of the Hudson Highlands, played a significant role in the American Revolution), but besides its storied past, it’s also packed with modern-day culture. The city has an arty, indie spirit that attracts…arty, indie people.

Do this:  A former Nabisco box-printing facility on the banks of the Hudson, Dia:Beacon holds collections from the 1960s to the present. Exhibitions meld with works on long-term view from artists including Walter De Maria and Dan Flavin. 

Stay here: Sitting at the base of Mount Beacon—a mile and a half from the town’s center—the Swann Inn of Beacon is a charming bed-and-breakfast. Situated in an 1866 Gothic house, it has five uniquely decorated rooms, which all have retro-cool vibes that would make Wes Anderson blush, including the Red Parlor Suite, a romantic respite complete with a friggin’ front porch). 

4.  New Hope, PA

New Hope is Bucks County’s jewel, unhurried and unassuming, with indie boutiques, seasonal-focused eateries and forget-all-your-troubles B&Bs galore. Between hopping to different quaint spots, be sure to get back to nature. We suggest cruising on a rented bike down the Delaware Canal towpath.

Do this: With 134 acres featuring hundreds of species of native plants (including more than 80 that are rare or endangered) and stunning woodlands and meadows throughout, Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve offers guided walks in addition to talks and workshops (“Focus on Ferns,” anyone?). 

Stay here: A AAA Four Diamond winner for eight consecutive years, The Inn at Bowman’s Hill is damn swoonworthy. Rooms, like Fountain View and Orchard Retreat, have heated tubs for two—if that’s your bag. For platonic pals, there’s the Penthouse Suite, with its private deck and panoramic views of the property. 

5.  New Paltz, NY

Beyond all the worth-the-trip views of riverside bluffs and verdant trees, New Paltz is the most historic on this list, with preserved houses that were around 100 years before we even became the U.S. of A. So, yeah. Pretty old.

Do this: Learn about the lives of the 17th-century Huguenot settlers , as performers (dolled up in duds from the period) take you through 30 buildings over 10 acres, including seven historic homes and a reconstructed 1717 church. (Want to retain the back-to-basics spirit as you take in the National Historic Landmark District? Leave the selfie stick at home.) 

Stay here: Mohonk Mountain House , set in the Shawangunk Ridge on Lake Mohonk, is sporting and sophisticated, a sort of East Coast version of The Shining grounds (without all the killing and stuff). Whether you choose one of the classic, wood-paneled rooms and suites or one of its private cottages two miles away, your nightly rate gets you access to a range of complimentary activities like boating and swimming, not to mention meals in its dining room. 

6.  Lake Placid, NY

The beloved lake is just the beginning: This prime Adirondacks spot features art, shopping, hiking, swimming and one killer mountain. 

Do this: If you're already planning to go out to admire all the greenery upstate New York has to offer, visiting The Wild Center is a must if you want to experience truly unreal nature views. That is, as long as you aren't afraid of heights. Why? Oh, because when you go, you'll be walking an elevated trail across the Adirondack treetops. No big deal!

Stay here:  The seven-acre, 131-unit Mirror Lake Inn can’t be beat. Every room looks over the lake, and the cozy fireside accommodations (along with two restaurants and a spa) will keep you in your robe late into the day. Or check in to the aesthetic and cozy Eastwind Lake Placid .

7.  Hudson, NY

You’ve probably heard a lot about Hudson , and here’s why: food and antiques. The place does both extremely well—it’s a prime option for rustic fine dining (Ca’Mea) and rare retro finds (just about any storefront on Warren Street). But the other big reason why droves of New Yorkers and, fittingly, DIY businesses and developments are staking their claim on the town is because it’s all ensconced in a gorgeous Hudson River–side environment, dotted with quaint historic homes.

Eat here: The communal, high-end restaurant Wm. Farmer and Sons has a cozy-yet-urban energy, serving up bar snacks, small plates and big plates that make use, whenever possible, of local ingredients. 

Stay here:  The Hudson Whaler beautifully blends old-timey flavor with contemporary amenities. Set in an Art Deco building, the hotel has 16 well-appointed guest rooms with sleek, sculptural furnishings that match the Deco tone, as well as free Wi–Fi, an iPad lending library, Keurig coffeemakers, pillow-top mattresses and Lather Aromatherapy bath products.

8.  Phoenicia, NY

Tucked into the Catskills, this Ulster County hamlet is a real melting pot, the kind of place where you can expect to see a conservative old-timer and a Brooklyn lumbersexual sipping Buds along the bar in perfect harmony. For every no-nonsense staple (Phoenicia Diner), there’s a hipster newbie (the Graham & Co.). The mellow, no-frills, hippie-dippie local culture makes it easy for anyone to relax here.

Do this:  Explore downtown Phoenicia, go whitewater tubing on Esopus Creek, or explore Kaaterskill Falls. Phoenicia has plenty of adventures, from mild to wild. 

Stay here: Located directly on Esopus Creek in the heart of the Catskills,  Phoenicia Black Bear Campground  is rustic without being primitive. Choose your own adventure: There’s swimming, biking, horseback riding and more nearby. 

9.  Shelter Island, L.I.

A midsize island just a seven-minute ferry ride from Greenport, NY, and surrounded by Shelter Island Sound and Gardiner’s Bay, Shelter Island is all about unwinding, with historic plantations, unassuming cafés, kayaking and, of course, those views that will make your pals rageful that they didn’t join you.

Do this: With more than 2,000 acres of tidal creeks, mature oak woodlands, fields and freshwater marshes, Nature Conservancy’s Mashomack Preserve is one of the richest habitats in the Northeast. Edged in white by 12 miles of coastline, Mashomack attracts birders and botanists looking for ospreys and a number of rare plants—and regular people like us who just want our Facebook feed to look awesome. 

Stay here: Every room at the perennially popular Sunset Beach Hotel has a private sundeck with water views (and loads of Kiehl’s products in the bathrooms, yay). Sunset Beach’s area, with its curving shoreline and spectacular light, is pretty darn similar to the French Riviera.

10.  The Berkshires, MA

Think of the Berkshires as the Hamptons, minus the nightlife and plus all the art, theater, dance, music and small-town simplicity you could want. Yes, the mountainous region in western Massachusetts has luxury, but it’s served in a laid-back setting. And given its jaw-dropping bucolic backdrop, there’s no shortage of outdoor activities, either.

Do this: One of the country’s largest centers for contemporary art, MASS MoCA , which is set in a converted factory building, focuses on large-scale, immersive installations that more conventional museums just can’t handle. There’s just as much focus on performing arts as there is on visual here; each year touts more than 75 performances of music (Wilco’s Solid Sound Festival has been held here), dance, films, theater and more.   Another surefire bet for the performing arts is Shakespeare & Company in nearby Lenox. The thriving regional theater company mixes traditional Shakespearean productions with contemporary works across multiple, indoor and outdoor stages. And do we need to mention that weed is legal here? Try paying a visit to the closest cannabis dispensary to the New York state border: the chic and friendly Rebelle located in Great Barrington.

Stay here: Oriented toward health, wellness and pampering, Canyon Ranch , which is centered around the century-old, lovingly restored Bellefontaine Mansion, has a lot to offer: tennis, aerobics, guided hikes and bike rides, canoeing, croquet and more than 40 seminars and classes daily such as “Finding Forgiveness.” After all that fresh air and, er, learning, relax in the spa while enjoying the signature Canyon Stone Massage or the candlelit Euphoria body treatment. 

11.  Cape May, NJ

Rediscover your inner summertime kiddie at this seaside destination, which has some of the East Coast’s most unspoiled beaches. The unpretentious fun peaks on Fourth of July weekend—when a full-on carnival and an impressive fireworks display bring in throngs of people—but the good times continue throughout the season, with boardwalk vendors and even dolphin-spotting tours.

Do this: Yup, Jersey Shore Alpacas sounds like an MTV spin-off (and it’d be an awesome one). At this small alpaca farm in Green Creek, a quaint town right next to Cape May, mingle with the critters—well taken care of by owners Jim and Tish Carpinelli—during Open Farm Saturdays, when you can meet the cute creatures at the fence and feed them (carrots are provided). 

Stay here: Cape Resorts . One of the area’s Victorian buildings, the 200-year-old Congress Hall is America’s oldest oceanfront resort. It has 104 rooms, as well as a restaurant, bar and lounge, outdoor pool, spa and a fitness center. But despite the full-service amenity list, the best things here are the simple ones, like the smell of salty sea air outside your open window. (Book an Atlantic-view room for the best relaxation results.) 

12.  Philadelphia, PA

2hrs from NYC by car, 1hr and 23min by train 

Aside from the wild football fans and patriotic Liberty Bell-seekers, the city of brotherly love caters to the artistic set through major attractions such as the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Go to get cultured, but stick around for the amazing restaurants, beer gardens and the cheesesteaks ( duh ) that truly make the city a smash.

Do this: As the crown jewel of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, the  Philadelphia Museum of Art should arguably be the first stop on your list. (Yes, even before the aforementioned cheesesteak). Inside, you’ll find an impressive collection of 19th-and early-20th-century paintings and artifacts. After peeping the creative works, refuel at Reading Terminal Market . The famous indoor farmer’s market hawks everything from food and housewares to speciality snacks and treats all under one roof. Grab a takeaway treat from notable sellers like Famous 4th Street Cookie Company, Beiler’s Doughnuts and Little Thai Market. Once you’re full, head to Independence Beer Garden (an outdoor brew den) to down a few pints while playing games like giant jenga. What’s missing? Oh, right: End your night with a cheesesteak at any one of these spots.

Stay here:  Rest your head at the Kimpton Hotel Monaco . This is one of the city’s coolest hotels with post-modern meets art-deco inspired decor and a trendy rooftop bar. Added bonus: The hotel is located right next to Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell.

13.  The Hamptons, L.I.

2.5 hrs from NYC

The Hamptons’ gorgeous sandy respites, dunes and relatively untouched landscapes aren’t just for the jet set. The area boasts gratis culture (the Dan Flavin Art Institute ) and no-nonsense places to eat ( Lobster Roll ) and drink (Fellingham’s), plus plenty of other casual nooks for the rest of us.

Do this: Coopers Beach  is the only stretch of silky, fine-grained white sand in Southampton that’s open to the public. So you can look like a baller in your sunset Instagram pic—without having to actually throw down a ton of dough. 

Otherwise, you pay to park at Main Beach in East Hampton or park and walk to Montauk’s Kirk Park Beach. 

Don’t miss a trip to the Montauk Lighthouse for some gorgeous views or a shopping spree in Sag Harbor.

Stay here: Privacy, luxury and amenities reign supreme at the Reform Club . The main building houses seven suites with wood-burning fireplaces (you’ll want to turn them on, even in the summer, just for the fun of it), oversize marble baths and white wainscot walls with original artwork. 

14.  Cooperstown, NY

4hrs from NYC

Cooperstown has way more than baseball, and every true brew head knows this. With four breweries in town, Cooperstown was once the country's hops-growing capital.

Do this: Brewery Ommegang , is located on a 135-acre hops farm and offers daily tours. 

Stay here: The Otesaga , the charming (and reportedly haunted) historic hotel, is celebrating its 106th anniversary. It offers fishing and boating—and serves Ommegang beer, to boot.

15.  Newport, RI

It’d be easy to dismiss the town as a tourist trap, but what often brings people back to Newport (other than yacht races, tours of a Vanderbilt mansion and smiley locals) are the newish spots.
