The Perfect Crete Itinerary: Western Crete

We have been everywhere on Crete, picked out the best of the best and created this Crete itinerary. Here you will find world wonders, routes off the beaten path, the most spectacular views, traditional villages, hidden beaches and amazing trails through the beautiful gorges of the island.

balos

Let's say you landed in Chania. You rent a car, maybe take a look at the town (it is not bad) or maybe you postpone sightseeing to a later day. Either way: don't stay here for too long.

We'd recommend you to go straight to the north-western part of the island. Here is our first pick: the village of Afrata . Afrata is just a place that embodies everything that we love about Crete: narrow white streets, old houses, flowers everywhere and the scent of flowers in the air. Still, it is far away from the main tourist routes.

Tip: In Afrata, you may stay at Robin's Nest B&B and enjoy a beautiful view over the sea. You will love the breakfast there: local yoghurt, honey and fresh orange juice.

The small beach down the road is likely to be almost empty. Or head to the bigger Ravdoucha or Phalassarna Beaches further west.

Afrata

Here, on the western shores, you may also find the most splendid and famous sand beaches of Crete: Elafonisi and Balos .

A dirt road leads to the Balos Lagoon, make sure your car has a good ground clearance or take a boat.

Both beaches tend to get too crowded in the high season. If you happen to go to Balos in July or August, try to be there as early as possible, before the boats bringing the tourists from Chania arrive. Close to Elafonissi, there is another beautiful and less visited beach - Kedrodasos . You will not find any beach bars or chez-longs here, but local hippies chilling in hammocks tied to the trees.

Balos

The serpentine road along the west coast with some jaw-dropping views of the sea is a great sight itself.

sheep

You may also check Gialiskari Beach by Palaiochora on the southern coast of Crete. Even though it is one of the most beautiful beaches on Crete, it doesn’t get nearly as full as Balos or Elafonissi. There are plenty of hotels in the towns of Palaiochora and Sougia, but we would recommend that you can look for a nice Airbnb in the hills north of both towns as nothing compares to the idyllic Crete countryside!

We made a video about the most beautiful beaches of western Crete - Kedrodasos, Gialiskari, Glyka Nera, Marmara & Elafonisi! Find out what the beaches are like and how to escape the crowds and have your own private beach even during the high season ;)

If you are not short on time, get to Agia Roumeli from Sougia by boat (40 min) and trek the longest canyon of the island - Samaria Gorge for a day. There is also a smaller, less famous but not less beautiful gorge near Sougia - Agia Irini. If you don't have an extra day to spend for trekking, a short walk in Agia Irini will be a good alternative.

From Sougia, you can either go round the White Mountains Protected Forest (there is no car road in the southern part of it) or you can take a ferry from Sougia to Hora Sfakion.

Crete Itinerary

Mountains are always a source of awe and beauty, so driving the White Mountains is very rewarding, even while time consuming. The laid-back mountain villages of Crete - Lakkoi , Theriso, Fres will be a good change from the vibrant atmosphere of the beach towns.

Crete Itinerary Loutro

Tip: Omalos Valley and Mike Omalos Houses . Hidden in the White Mountains, the Omalos Valley is just a perfect getaway. Sitting on the veranda of Mike's beautiful house, listening to the goats bleating and bells was one of the best experience we had on Crete. There are a number of tracks close to Omalos, e.g. you may trek the Samaria Gorge from here.

Hora Sfakion . This little town would charm you with its tiny chapels by the sea.

Hora Sfakiaon

From Hora Sfakion, you may do a great day trip to Loutro . You may have seen pictures of this small white and blue town nestling under a cliff. But it is better to see it with your own eyes.

You can hike to Loutro either from the amazing beach of Glyka Nera , or from the opposite side - Finikas. These are some of the most spectacular trails on Crete. Still, you are not likely to meet a lot of people while hiking.

Crete Itinerary Loutro

Close to Finikas, there is another gorgeous beach - Marmara.

On the way from Hora Sfakion to Finikas, you reach one of my favourite spots on Crete: the picturesque ruins around Aradena Church . You may spend hours here enjoying the peace and the tranquillity of this historic place with only goats as companions.

Araden Church

Tip: Where to stay? Both Hora Sfakion and Loutro have a number of nice hotels a great choice of restaurants and cafés. But if you would like to stay away from the buzzing life of the tourist towns - and still close to the main points of interest, we would recommend Madares Apartments Anopolis in Anopolis village. And you can also trek to Loutro from Anopolis.

On the next day aim for the Preveli Monastery. You may take either a faster road along the coast via Korakas or if you have some time to spare, take a detour and drive inwards the island. From the hills, you would have a fantastic view over both coasts of Crete. The green meadows, the old villages and herds of sheep will make you love the place.

meadow

When you see Preveli Monastery , we promise, you won't be disappointed. It boasts a great location over the ultramarine sea, beautiful architecture and a splendid interior of the churches. In April, you would have the poppy fields around the monastery that would add to its parlour.

A scenic descent to a gorgeous beach close to the monastery and a short walk in the palm forest by the beach would top off the great day you had. You may want to stay in a basic cheap hotel by the palm forest - we preferred it to the overrun and rather plain Plakias. If you do stay in Plakias, choose one of the hotels situated above the town.

Preveli

Alternatively go through Kourtaliotiko Gorge to Lampini , an old town with another very old and beautiful church. Lampini is a good base for exploring the scenic atmospheric villages around: Gerakari, Amari, Monastiraki. Plan a couple of days as this region really is a gem!

Tip: In November 2014, we really enjoyed staying at the hotel Aoritis Villas . On the dark November evenings, its owner used to pop into for a drink and a chat and his wife made delicious cakes we had for breakfast.

If it is the time for you to get home, you may turn northwards towards Rethymno. Do stop on the way at the famous Arkadi Monastery and Amari monastery.

Arkadi

Once on the highway, you would reach Chania in just a couple of hours.

Tip: Planning you Crete itinerary, keep in mind that driving small roads (that also happen to be the most scenic) is time consuming. At the same time, Crete is very diverse, from the number of great regions we mentioned in this post, you may choose one and you are sure to find spectacular beaches, scenic villages, peaceful valleys and challenging hikes. If you have just a week, you may consider: a roadtrip along the western beaches (Balos, Phalassarna, Kedrodasos, and gorges and villages of the White Mountains (Omalos, Lakkoi). a roadtrip over Hora Sfakion, Aradena, Loutro, Preveli, Lampini, Arkadia and Rethimno.

If you plan to go further to the east, aim for Heraklion and stop at the beautiful small town of Zaros and check the Rouvas Forest and its gorgeous gorge.

We've stayed a couple of times in Zaros, and each time we had an XXXL breakfast there! A good breakfast seems to be a visit card of the village. We liked our stay at Roes Apartments . Hariklia Rent Rooms and Hotel Zaros are other good budget options.

If you land in Heraklion and want to explore the eastern part of the island, check our next blog post - The best Crete itinerary: Eastern Crete !

The Most Scenic Cretan Villages

The Most Scenic Cretan Villages

If you read us for some time, you know of our fascination for Cretan villages: so peaceful, so quiet, with the scent of oranges in the air and old people in black sitting in the village taverns. With whitewashed houses nestling close to each other and pots with flowers in the streets, the Cretan villages are incredibly scenic. People of the Cretan villages are usually amazingly friendly. Cretans love sharing their food (A couple of times we got pastry, fruit and a piece of cheese from strangers) and it is fun to be around these people. Don't be discouraged by your basic Greek – ours doesn't go beyond "Hello" - Kalimera and "goat cheese" – katsikísio tyrí .

Leaving behind us Chania and its Venetian port, we’ll drive you deep into the southern part of the island, the Sfakia region with its memorable scenic routes and the endless wild landscapes.

Sfakia is the land of the massive Lefka Ori, also known as the White Mountains, famous for Pachnes, its highest peak as well, the numerous gorges, and the endless views to the Libyan Sea. Aside from this astonishing beauty, the land of Sfakia has a million tales to tell you, such as stories about the turbulent but heroic past of brave rebel Sfakians, who fought for freedom.

The first stop of your day is at Askifou Plateau at an altitude of 730 meters, a natural picture-pretty valley surrounded by the White Mountains. From here, you’ll start your hike into the Imbros Gorge, an outstanding 8-kilometer gorge. During the 2,5 hours approximately easy hike, you’ll have the opportunity to admire amazing geological formations of very narrow passages, capture your best photos with your family, and learn about the fauna and flora that you’ll encounter along the way.

Especially for Australian, New Zealander, British, or WWII story lovers, walking through the gorge is almost a pilgrimage, as this gorge was the only escape route in May 1941 for fleeing ANZACs who fought with the allied troops in Crete, and finally, they succeeded in sailing to Egypt. We will have many breathtaking stories to share with you.

Next, we will head to Frangokastello, one of the most famous beaches of Crete, famous for the local Venetian castle on the beautiful beach and the legendary ghosts of Drosoulites. Located on the southern coast of Crete, this hidden gem offers crystal-clear turquoise waters teeming with vibrant marine life. This 14th-century fortress adds a touch of history and charm to the snorkeling experience, making it even more unique and memorable. Be mesmerized by the beauty and tranquility of this snorkeling destination.

After snorkeling, you can relax on the pristine sandy beach, soaking up the Mediterranean sun and enjoying the stunning views of the Libyan Sea before indulging in a delicious seaside lunch at one of the local tavernas, savoring the fresh catch of the day before heading back to Chania town.

9 Day Western Crete Road Trip Itinerary

Length:  9 days, 8 nights Start and End Point:  Heraklion. Alternatively, Chania Cities:  Chania, Heraklion Hikes:  Samaria Gorge , Katholiko Bay Beaches: Falasarna, Balos , Elafonisi , Kedrodasos, Seitan Limania, Preveli, Agia Roumeli

How Many Days in Crete?

This Crete itinerary is for 9 days, two of which are travel days. Crete is a large island so at minimum, I would recommend 7 days in Crete. For only 7 days I would compress a couple beach days or skip them. If you are really short on time you can definitely see some of West Crete’s highlights in 5 days and in this case I would likely stick to staying in Chania and cut out Heraklion entirely.

Renting a Car in Crete

Crete is definitely one of those places where it’s more convenient to have a car. It gives a lot of freedom and flexibility with your schedule in case you want to add in extra beach visits or change up the order of things.

I recommend and use   Discover Cars . It compares local Greek and international companies so you can get the best deal. If you don’t have full coverage, you can also add this to your booking so you’re covered.

Even though it can be tempting to go with the cheapest price, don’t go with a company with low ratings. In Greece, I used Sixt and was very happy with the car and the service.

I had no trouble getting around Crete, most of the roads are highways and easy to drive. Some roads, notably the one to Balos Bay, are dirt roads but still easily passable. Expect lots of switchbacks and mountain scenery. I found Heraklion especially hectic to drive as Google Maps was outdated on one-way roads and the roads are seriously narrow.

I do recommend paying for the extra insurance to cover everything on your car in Crete. A lot of parking lots have narrow spaces so it’s easy to get dinged. I, unfortunately, came back to a scratched and dented front bumper after parking in Crete. Luckily, the extra insurance meant it was 100% covered and I was reimbursed for the extra 450 euros for damage.

Narrow mountain road in Crete with sheep blocking the way.

When to Visit Crete

I visited Crete at the beginning of June and found the weather to be perfect. I didn’t have any rain days and the hottest it got was 29C.

In general, Crete is best to visit between May to October as you will have lots of sunny days. From July to August, you will get bigger crowds and much hotter days. Hiking may be affected by extreme heat as some places like the Samaria Gorge are closed in extreme heat or during rain.

A visit to Crete from November to April will give you cheaper prices and avoid the crowds but a much higher chance of rainy days. The Samaria Gorge is also closed from November to April.

Is Crete Worth Visiting?

Crete is definitely worth visiting. Crete has everything you need for a perfect vacation. Unique Cretan cuisine, ancient history, picturesque beaches, stunning mountain landscapes, and adorable historical cities. For me, Crete is the perfect balance between beach days, hiking, and cute towns.

One Week in Crete Itinerary

With only one week in Crete, you won’t be able to see the whole island. It’s best to just choose one area. You need at least 7 full days in Crete for this itinerary, plus two travel days.

This one-week itinerary focuses on Western Crete which has some of the most beautiful beaches in all of Greece, including Balos Bay and Elafonisi. It also has one of Europe’s most famous gorges at Samaria Gorge. There is a little something for everyone.

Day 1: Arrive in Heraklion and Visit Knossos

Your first day in Crete will look different depending on the time you arrive. I had an early flight so I arrived at Heraklion airport around 10 am. I quickly picked up my rental car at Nikos Kazantzakis International Airport and started my first day in Crete.

The first destination in this Crete itinerary is to visit Knossos Palace , just outside of Heraklion. You may want to book your ticket in advance as the ticket lineup can get long. Knossos Palace is an important Minoan site and may well be the first city of Europe as it was founded in the Neolithic around 7000 BCE. The palace was destroyed in 1370 BCE and rediscovered in 1878.

Ruins at Knossos Palace near Heraklion, Crete with three intact red columns.

The British archeologist who led the excavations in the early 1900s attempted to preserve and recreate the palace using modern materials such as concrete. The concrete is still present today and you can see these restoration attempts as you explore the site. I had one of the best meals in Crete in Knossos. I can highly recommend Pasiphae Restaurant , which offers plenty of parking in a shaded olive grove and is close enough to walk to the palace. There is an emphasis on Minoan food at Pasiphae and it’s the perfect place to relax before making the long drive to Western Crete.

A plate of dolmades (flavoured rice wrapped in grape leaves) and Minoan Salad in Knossos, Crete.

After your first taste of Cretan food, head to Falasarna and check into Casa D’Irene Deluxe Hotel where you will be staying for the next 3 nights of this itinerary.

End your day with dinner and check out the sunset at nearby Falasarna Beach .

Sunset over Falasarna Beach with parasols in shadow. Falasarna is the perfect place to base yourself in Western Crete to explore the nearby beaches and relax in the sun.

Where to Sleep in Falasarna: I stayed at Casa D’Irene Deluxe Hotel and it was probably my favourite hotel I stayed at in Crete. Beautiful rooms, nice pool and lounge area. But the breakfast! I’m still dreaming of it and I think it’s my favourite hotel breakfast I’ve ever had. They really include everything you could want. The location was also very convenient as it was close to a main road for exploring nearby sites.

Day 2: Visit Balos Beach

Start your day early by having breakfast at the hotel and then drive up to Balos Beach , one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe . While I had read the drive up should be avoided because the road was bad, I didn’t have any problems. The road is a dirt road but well maintained. If you are uncomfortable with driving here, there are boat tours from Kissamos to Balos .

The drive up to the parking lot to Balos Bay does take about 30 minutes from the main road but there is impressive scenery looking out over the water and you will likely see multiple goats. There is a small fee to drive up so be prepared with some coins.

The dirt road that is carved out of the mountain to Balos Bay at sunrise. Balos Bay is a must visit on a road trip of Crete

It’s a short walk down to the beach from the parking lot. It truly is a magnificent location and Balos Beach is my favourite beach in Crete . Balos Bay is the one place I would say is unmissable for a visit to Western Crete. I have a full guide (with tons of photos!) to Balos Beach here . While it doesn’t have as much pink sand as Elafonisi, keep an eye out for it as there are some spots along the shore where you can spot it.

You can easily spend a morning or afternoon here. Make sure you have plenty of water as the hike up is pretty hard in the sun.

The clear water at Balos Bay with some pink sand

Full disclosure: I visited Balos Bay, Elafonisi, and Kedrodasos Beach on the same day as I woke up super early to be at Balos for 7am. I’m not recommending it here as it’s generally not a great pace to travel at, I was just really excited.

Day 3: Elafonisi and Kedrodasos Beach

On your second full day of this Crete itinerary, explore more of the spectacular coastal scenery. From Falasarna, the drive to Elafonisi is about 1h15m. There are two possible routes you can take to get there. The first is the coastal road. While the coastal road is quite scenic, the road is very winding and narrow at some points so you do have to go slower. The second option is no less scenic as even though it is inland, it takes you through Topolia Gorge .

The road through the spectacular Topolia Gorge on the way to Elafonissi Beach in Western Crete

When you arrive at Elafonisi Beach there are multiple parking lots, keep driving to the end and park as close as possible to the entrance as the price for parking was the same at all of them. While it looks like you used to be able to drive down and park right at the beach, now there is about a 10-15 minute walk to get to Elafonisi.

Elafonisi Beach is famous for its pink sand and is the perfect place to spend the day lounging on the sand and swimming. One thing to keep in mind at Elafonisi (and other pink beaches!) is to leave the sand on the beach as in recent years there is much less pink sand than there used to be.

Elafonisi has plenty of shallow water perfect for casual swimming. It’s quite a large beach so even if you are there on a busy day you should be able to find a spot. Elafonisi has a snack bar, change stalls, and bathrooms that cost a Euro to use.

Elafonissi Beach with pink sand, clear water and mountains in the background. Elafonissi is a must visit destination in Crete and a must on any Crete road trip. It's one of the most unique beaches in the world because of the abundance of pink sand you can see here.

After Elafonisi, drive the 10 minutes to nearby Kedrodasos Beach . The parking is free and there are no services at this beach so make sure you bring drinks with you. It’s a short 15-minute walk down to the shore.

Unlike Elafonisi Beach, Kedrodasos isn’t a sand beach. It’s mostly rocks but the scenery is stunning and it’s a great place to get away from some of the crowds and relax. I loved that there were trees right next to the beach so you could find some shade as well. One thing to note is that Kedrodasos Beach is a nude beach, although most people are clothed.

Clear water and a rocky beach with mountains in the background at Kedrodasos Beach in Crete. This beach is near to Elafonissi and makes for a great addition to any Western Crete itinerary

Day 4: Hiking Katholiko Bay and Visiting Seitan Limania

Today you will be checking out of your hotel in Falasarna and check-in to Mosaic in Chania for the next three nights.

After a final breakfast at Casa D’Irene Deluxe Hotel , pack up the car and head towards the Akrotiri Peninsula northeast of Chania. From Falasarna this is about a 1h15m drive.

The first stop of the day is my favourite hike that I did in Crete, Katholiko Bay . To visit Katholiko Bay, drive past the Agia Triada Monastery down a fairly narrow road and park at Gouverneto Monastery. There is a small entry fee and you do need to have shoulders covered and shorts or a dress that goes to your knees. If not, make sure you have a shawl or light towel handy to cover up or you will be denied entry.

Hiking a mountain path with views of the Aegean Sea at Katholiko Bay, Crete

The hike at Katholiko Bay gives you gorgeous views of the Aegean Sea on the way down. One important stop on the hike is Bear Cave (Arkoudospilios Cave). It gets its name from a stalagmite that looks like bear. The cave has been used for worship since ancient times, perhaps since the cults of Artemis and Apollo. Bear Cave and others like it in the area were used by locals during WWII to hide from Nazis.

The whole area here is considered holy. At the bottom of Katholiko gorge, you can see the abandoned Katholiko Monastery which is quite imposing and impressive. Continuing on through the gorge you end up at Katholiko Bay. As it is a holy area, swimming here is not allowed. While at the bay I was lucky enough to spot a sea turtle feeding right at the inlet to the bay. It’s a beautiful area and a rewarding hike. Make sure to pack plenty of water as you are exposed to the sun for the entirety of the hike.

Mountain and beautiful Aegean Sea at Katholiko Bay, Crete. This is one of the best hikes in Crete and is perfect for a one week Crete itinerary

When you are done at Katholiko Bay make a stop at Agia Triada Monastery. This is an active Byzantine monastery that you can visit to see the 17th-century buildings and gardens. There is also a small shop that sells local products as well as ice cream and water.

The final stop of the day is Seitan Limania . While I had read before that the drive down is awful, when I visited it looked like the road had recently been repaved and was no problem at all. Parking is free and there is a short walk down to the beach here. You get a terrific view of Seitan Limania from the parking lot as well. This is the ideal place to go for a swim at the end of a long day.

View of an inlet near Chania, Crete. Seitan Limania is a popular beach and is perfect for cooling off after a hike.

Finish your day by driving to Chania and check-in to your hotel.

Where to Sleep in Chania I stayed at Mosaic and was very happy with it. I really liked the hotel location as it was easy to find street parking and was also within walking distance of the bus station and Venetian Port of Chania.

Day 5: Chania Botanical Gardens and Old Venetian Port of Chania

On your first full day in Chania, drive to the nearby Chania Botanical Gardens . The drive is beautiful as you go through many citrus farms, which is a bit of a change of scenery from olive groves. The Botanical Gardens are quite large and you can easily spend a full morning there. There are tons of beautiful trees and plants here to explore. There is also an on-site restaurant here that makes for a good place to have lunch while looking over the mountains.

A walkway with grapes growing over it at the Botanical Garden of Crete

Head back to Chania and explore the city for the afternoon. Around the Venetian Port of Chania, there are so many side streets to discover with cute shops and restaurants. There is an interesting mix of Ottoman and Venetian architecture in Chania. Make sure to check out the lighthouse and view of the port. In Chania, my favourite place to eat was The Well of the Turk , which had delicious food in a very scenic location.

Flowers and colourful buildings in the streets of Chania

Finish your first day in Chania with a sunset cruise that gives you views of Chania harbour and the Kissamos Mountains.

Day 6: Kourtaliotiko Gorge and Preveli Palm Beach

Today is all about visiting Preveli Palm Beach , with a stop on the way to Kourtaliotiko Gorge .

Kourtaliotiko Gorge can be a bit tricky to visit as there is not much parking at all. To visit, park at the spot that has a food vendor. Head down the path that is through a stone arch. When you reach the fork in the path, go left if you want to view the waterfalls from above and right if you want to swim to the waterfalls.

I honestly went with just viewing the waterfalls from above as the water was too cold for me. If you are feeling a bit adventurous, it is apparently worth the swim, just make sure you have something waterproof to put your phone or camera in. Even though the walk down to the waterfalls at Kourtaliotiko Gorge is short, it is fully exposed and gets hot quickly so take water.

View of waterfalls that are between a narrow gorge in Kourtaliotiko Gorge, Crete. This is a great stop on Crete road trip on the way to Preveli Beach

Back at the car, someone had hit the front bumper and scratched it. I had purchased insurance through DiscoverCars and once I got home I sent them all the documents and they covered 100% of the damage cost.

Car damage aside, it was onwards to Preveli Beach . There are two parking lots for Preveli Beach. I parked in the free one on the eastern side near Drymiskiano Ammoudi. There is a huge parking lot here and the walk to the beach is less steep. The official parking lot for Preveli Beach does have a small fee and the walk down is a lot steeper but it does have a more impressive view.

View of Crete's famous palm beach, Preveli with white sand and palm trees.

Preveli Beach is a rock beach so you may want water shoes as I found them quite painful compared to the soft sands I had been spoiled with at previous beaches. There is a palm forest here but when I was visiting there was a sign requesting people stay out because of fire risk.

Day 7: Hiking Samaria Gorge

On your final full day in Crete, spend the day at Samaria Gorge. I planned this entire trip around wanting to hike the Samaria Gorge as it had been on my hike wishlist for years.

You do have to keep an eye on the weather because they do close it if there will be high winds or rain. Visiting Samaria Gorge is a long day as you likely will be up and on a bus around 6 or 7 am and won’t return to Chania until 9 pm. So make sure to pack some snacks and plenty of water.

To visit Samaria Gorge, you can either travel independently and book buses and the ferry the night before at the Chania bus station or book a tour . Booking a tour to Samaria Gorge does have the advantages of not having to worry about tickets being sold out and they will pick you up from your hotel.

The cliffs get as close as 4m apart in Samaria Gorge, Crete

The scenery takes you through mountains and the old village of Samaria. The last couple kilometres of the hike are really spectacular as you are in the gorge with cliffs towering up to 500m high beside you. I couldn’t help but compare it to another remarkable hike in Europe, the Caminito del Rey in Spain .

The hike through Samaria Gorge is mostly downhill and quite rocky so it’s worth it to have thicker-soled shoes. The hike is 13 km plus another 3 km to get from the end of the hike to the village, it takes about 5 to 6 hours. While the start of the hike you do start with a big group of people, eventually, the crowds do thin out. Once you are out of the park there is also an option to pay around 3 euros to take a bus the last 3km to Agia Roumeli.

You end the hike at the village of Agia Roumeli  where you can swim in the sea and grab a meal nearby at Calypso before getting your ferry to the bus back to Chania.

View of Agia Roumeli village from the ferry. This is where your hike to Samaria Gorge ends and your only option is a ferry as no roads access this small village.

Day 8: Exploring Heraklion

Depending on where your onward travel leaves from, either extend your time in Chania or drive to Heraklion . If you are extending your time in Chania today, a Land Rover Safari to the White Mountains or a boat tour and snorkeling are good options. The final destination on this Crete itinerary is Heraklion. In Heraklion, check into your hotel as soon as you are able to. I stayed at Kipos Boutique Suites and loved it. I loved the location and the rooms are gorgeous. The concierge at Kipos also gave excellent restaurant recommendations.

Building in Heraklion, the biggest city in Crete

One of the top places to visit in Heraklion is the Heraklion Archeological Museum . It contains many Minoan artefacts and is a great museum to visit. After visiting the museum, explore the streets of Heraklion. Make sure to view the Venetian Harbour and seaside promenade as you wander through Heraklion.

One of the highlights for me in Heraklion was the food. I highly recommend Peskesi . They specialize in Cretan food and even have an olive oil menu. It’s a fantastic place to get to taste some of the food Crete is famous for. It is popular so if you can, make a reservation. One thing I loved about Crete is that many places offer up a complimentary dessert and raki liquor at the end of the meal. The hospitalty in Crete is some of the best I have experienced in Europe.

Where to Sleep in Heraklion: I stayed at Kipos Boutique Suites and the rooms there are absolutely beautiful. Everything is quite new and modern. The concierge here is there at all hours and is an excellent resource for where to go in Heraklion. The location also includes parking and is a short walk to the main sights.

Day 9: Departing Crete

Today is a travel day, for me, it involved dropping off the rental car at the Heraklion airport and getting a flight onwards to my next destination. If you have any time in the morning, explore the city and sample more of the fantastic food Heraklion has to offer.

Crete is easily one of the top spots I’ve visited in Europe and I can’t wait to have a chance to explore Eastern Crete as well. Between the food and spectacular scenery, it’s well worth the trip.

Have a blast exploring Crete on this one week itinerary packed with great activities! This is the perfect way to see everything the island has to offer.

Top ten things to do in western Crete

  • By Simpson Travel
  • 10 Sep 2021

A top ten is a tricky notion when it comes to Crete because there's so very much to see and do. But we hope our little guide to the west will help you scratch the surface of this most beguiling island and get you started on a love affair with enough appeal to last a lifetime.

west crete tour

No trip to western Crete is complete without a visit to Chania. Approached through the pedestrianised streets of the Old Town, the harbour is one of the prettiest in the Mediterranean. Nicknamed The Venice of the East, evenings are a great time to explore the myriad of boutiques and tavernas lining the backstreets or enjoy a sunset drink at a waterside taverna as you watch the world go by.

The Samaria Gorge is 16km long and stakes its claim as Europe’s longest and arguably, most spectacular gorge. A five to seven-hour hike over rough terrain requires a certain level of fitness and walking experience, but this majestic gorge, situated in the national park of Samaria in west Crete’s magnificent White Mountains, is truly worth the effort. Guided tours start dramatically with a steep descent from the Omalos plateau, and finish by the turquoise waters of Crete’s striking southern coastline. Only accessible by boat or on foot, there’s a chance for some light refreshment before the ferry appears to whisk you reluctantly back to civilisation.

west crete tour

Just a ten-minute drive from GK Beach Hotel in Kalyves, the abandoned Turkish castle of Aptera is pre-dated by the ancient ruins of the fallen Minoan civilisation which surround it. Believed to have been continuously occupied from as early as the 14th century BC, right up until the monastery was abandoned in 1964, this atmospheric spot above the village of Megala Chorafia enjoys spectacular views across Souda Bay and offers a truly evocative encounter with Crete’s extraordinary history.

west crete tour

The verdant foothills of the White Mountains are home to the sleepy villages of Plaka, Armeni and Gavalochori. All are worth a visit if you have the time but don’t miss Vamos, home to our Arosmari Village Hotel , a delightfully atmospheric place with a distinctly creative edge. Stroll the old streets, immerse yourself in the local culture and complete your day with a traditional Cretan supper in one of the excellent local tavernas. And if you’ve culinary ambitions of your own, we’ll even arrange a cookery lesson so you can prepare a taste of Crete when you get back home.

west crete tour

Arriving in Loutro for the first time is magical. On the one hand it’s hard to believe that such understated simplicity can evoke such a powerful sense of joy and wonder, on the other, there’s a niggling sense of regret that it’s taken so long to discover its mere existence. And once discovered there’s no going back. If you decide to take a day trip, the drive to catch the boat from Chora Sfakion alone makes the journey worthwhile. But if you decide to stay a night or two at our lovely Porto Loutro , you may well discover that a lifetime in this idyllic waterside village could never be enough.

west crete tour

The shoreline of south west Crete defies superlatives. It simply isn’t possible to do it justice in words or pictures (though we’ve done our best), so the only way to truly appreciate its unique appeal is to experience it for yourself. And there’s no better way to do it than from the water. Depart from Sfakia or Loutro and sit back as your local skipper shows you the very best of this stunning landscape; deserted beaches, remote churches, hidden caves and dramatic gorges await as you glide across the crystal clear waters of the Libyan Sea.

west crete tour

Crete is well known for the quality of its cuisine but it’s also rapidly starting to make a name for itself as a wine producer, and is home to a number of quality boutique wineries. On the local stage, the Dourakis vineyard is a firm favourite and a tour of this excellent family-run winery servicing all aspects of the wine-making process, from vine to bottle, is a sure-fire winner. For a more sophisticated, international flavour, the Manousakis Winery is the place to visit. But whatever your leaning and budget, you’ll enjoy the outstanding results of their labour, with a complimentary tasting and a bite to eat at the end of your tour.

west crete tour

Inland from the spectacular golden beach that stretches east of Georgioupoli, Lake Kournas is Crete’s only freshwater lake and a sanctuary to some unique wildlife; in particular the rare Diamondback Terrapin. Set in a picturesque valley, it’s a beautiful spot to walk, picnic and take a ride across the water on a pedalo. There’s also the option of a dip - but be warned, the water is fed by two springs descending straight from the White Mountains and is best described as refreshing in its truest sense!

west crete tour

If you’ve ever found yourself reading the travel pages and been taken aback by an image of Crete more akin to an archipelago in the Indian Ocean, that’s Balos Bay. At the north west tip of the island, a sweep of pure white sand creates a glittering lagoon and connects to uninhabited Gramvousa. You can catch a boat from Kissamos, or venture along the unmade track that winds up into the mountains high above the bay and walk down to the beach in 20 minutes. Arriving by car is not for the faint hearted, but the sense of adventure is worth the odd hair-raising moment as you negotiate the rough-hewn road that hugs the hillside.

west crete tour

On Crete’s west coast, Falasarna Beach lies in an area of outstanding natural beauty, renowned for its variety of flora and fauna, and large enough never to feel crowded. This glorious stretch of sand is perfect for a day by the sea and there are a variety of low-key beach bars and tavernas when you’re in need of refreshment. By early evening, the beach empties making it a wonderfully romantic setting to watch the sunset with a picnic, a glass of something bubbly and your favourite person.

The boat goes at a very steady speed along the coast of Lindos so you can take in the scenery. Watching the fish through the glass bottom and feeding the fish was great. The children loved seeing the fish and there was lots of time to take pictures and spot different fish. We ended by swimming in the most beautiful blue lagoon, the water was so warm, the children were given life jackets if needed. We thought it was very good value for money and would definitely recommend for a half day trip 😄🐠⛴ Read more Written October 22, 2023
  • rosh211 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Disappointing tour that didn't match the description The description of this tour states "Max of 20 per group". It also mentions a duration of 13-14hrs. Neither were accurate. A small gripe to begin with - we were given a pick up point at a hotel that was a 30 min uphill walk away. Having met us, the minibus came back down the hill and picked up another group about 5 minutes away from our accommodation. Not sure why it wasn't co-ordinated better. We were then surprised to be driven to a layby and transferred onto a double decker coach (I would estimate carrying 100+ people). It was already full so only limited seats were available. The seat in front of us was broken and although the occupant apologised, my husband spent the entire trip with very little legroom. The 'professional and multilingual speaking guide' sounded like someone reading from Wikipedia and at times it was difficult to understand the commentary. We returned to Agia Pelagia at 6.45pm - not quite the 13-14hrs advertised but to be honest, it was a relief to be off the coach. I have booked many enjoyable tours, in many cities, but I was very disappointed with this one. If we'd had any idea that it wasn't a small tour (as advertised) we would have looked elsewhere. The description is totally misleading and it felt like we'd been subcontracted out onto a much bigger tour. I have emailed Any Destination with my feedback and after 6 days have had no reply. Not sure that customer satisfaction is that high on their priorities. Read more Written October 3, 2023

The boat was supposed to stop at three locations but only stopped at two because of the weather. The stop at Antiparos was beautiful. Snorkel gear was provided. There was plenty of food for lunch and snacks were also provided. Free beer and wine too! Because of the windy weather in the afternoon we couldn't sail back to the port we departed from so the company organised a bus to take us back. Music was playing on the trip and it was a good vibe. The boat was a bit small for the number of people that were on it making it a bit hard to sit in shade and a bit cramped at times. Other than that, it was a great trip. They were all so friendly, chatty, really nice crew, answered all the questions we had about the areas we were visiting, gave us some good travel trips for the island hopping we were doing, We got to stop a couple nice spots to swim, we stopped a place to explore a cave if we wanted to or to cliff jump if we wanted to. The water is incredible, crystal clear water I was in heaven. The lunch provide was delicious, the wine on board was delicious, and plenty, we started off as a quiet bunch but didnt end the day that way, we had a blast! I would recommend this cruise for sure. The crew had very little interaction with guests. The snorkeling equipment didn't work and ran out. It didnt mater because there weren't really any fish to see. We didn't see the caves because the water was choppy. The lunch was delicious! The water is a turquoise I've really seen in the ocean. You can jump off the boat and enjoy a nice swim. Overall- I would skip the boat tour. Book a sunset cruise and take the public boat to a beach during the day. Better value for what you experience. Read more Written July 3, 2023

If we wanted to visit the sites we had to swim to them and we parked pretty far away. If you aren’t a strong confident swimmer, I would recommend booking a tour where they have little rafts to take you onto the ancient sites. Otherwise the views were great! West Crete: 5 Amazing Things to Do

Dieser Artikel ist auch verfügbar auf: Deutsch

Crete – a small jewel in the Mediterranean Sea. Crisscrossed by rugged mountains and lined with beautiful beaches, the island offers great things to do for everyone. Do you like cycling, challenging tours, or hiking through wild gorges? Then West Crete is the place for you! And if you enjoy swimming in crystal clear waters and relaxing on white sandy beaches, the island has plenty to offer.

Things to Do & Insider Tips for West Crete

Traveling to Crete is quite easy – many budget airlines fly from Germany to Chania or Heraklion . During summer months there are direct flights, in the low season you can fly via Athens . I recommend renting a car in Crete – although the public bus network is very well developed, having your own car gives you more flexibility.

As for travel times, Crete is still sunny and warm well into October – possibly mixed with a few windy days, so it’s worth considering a few more sunny days on Greek soil before winter.

Find out what not to miss in the western corner of Crete!

West Crete: Tours and tickets

1. balos and gramvousa.

Balos, along with Elafonissi , is one of the most beautiful and famous beaches in Crete. Dazzling white sand, crystal clear water – it’s no wonder that the beach is often overcrowded during high season. We booked a tour from Chania that took us by bus and boat to Balos (along with about 300 other beach bums). Of course, this is not an individual trip. The beach was packed.

It’s also possible to rent a car and drive to Balos. If you leave very early (it’s good to be there before 10:00 a.m.), you may be able to have the beach a bit more to yourself. After that, the tour boats arrive and it gets more crowded. The problem with driving yourself is that the road is incredibly bad. For the last seven kilometers to the beach, many drivers need more than an hour! Also, some car rental companies have a “No Balos” rule in their contract because too many cars have broken down there. So think twice and remember to get full insurance!

Gramvousa Beach on a Crete Tour

However, if you do the boat tour, a visit to the former fortress island of Gramvousa is included – here you can also enjoy a nice swim and visit a neat Venetian fort from where you have a great view of the sea and West Crete.

2. Elafonissi

For many, Elafonissi is the most beautiful beach in Crete, if not Greece. A headland of pink sand stretches far into the sea, there are dunes like on the North Sea, the water is shallow, turquoise, and sparkles like a diamond.

Crete's popular Elafonissi beach

Of course, Elafonissi is no longer an insider tip. Our tip: If you are comfortable driving on unpaved mountain roads with endless serpentines, drive by yourself to Elafonissi instead of joining one of the organized bus tours .

Like Balos , Elafonissi is crowded from about 10:00 a.m. during the high season (June to mid-September). Many tourists take the pink sand with them as a souvenir. That’s why there are now signs forbidding you to take sand with you. So here we should act according to the motto “Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints”. Apart from that, Elafonissi is really a beautiful beach and no trip to Crete is complete without it.

A little tip : On the way back to Chania, it’s worth stopping at the small Taverna Stomio (about 7 km after Elafonissi). In the shade of the old trees, you can have an excellent meal at a reasonable price.

3. The old town of Chania

Chania is the center of West Crete and one of the top things to do. If you don’t want to stay at a beach hotel, it’s a good idea to stay in Chania instead. To find accommodation, you should check out Airbnb: there are many cute little houses for rent in the old town that are not too expensive, even in the high season. If you don’t have a car, you can even go swimming in Chania: the city beach of Nea Chora can’t compete with the beauties of Balos and Elafonissi , but it’s nice enough for a short, refreshing dip.

Chania has thousands of winding little streets that you can easily explore on foot and stock up on Greek olive oil, oregano, and other souvenirs. The Venetian harbor in the old town has many restaurants where you can dine with a view of the water. But watch out for the prices: often the restaurants in the alleys are a bit better and also cheaper than those at the port, which are exclusively frequented by tourists.

4. Taverna Dounias in Drakona

A journey through time: You can drive by car through gorges, over steep mountain roads, and narrow passes, and arrive at a village that seems to have fallen out of time. In Drakona, the clocks tick differently – if there are any at all. The owner of the small taverna cooks exclusively over an open fire – with ingredients that come directly from the surrounding area. Real slow food, as shown by the numerous documentaries that have been made about Taverna Dounias.

If you’re there, you should try the roasted potatoes and salad – incredibly delicious! Be sure to watch the food sizzle in the old clay pots over the open fire. It’s a great experience! If you want to see it for yourself: The tavern is about half an hour’s drive from Chania .

5. Seitan Limania

This gem is only for the hardiest of travelers: Seitan Limania is not easy to get to. There is no bus service – and it’s better that way. The road to the small beach is the steepest and narrowest we’ve seen in West Crete, if not in all of Greece. You need nerves of steel for that! Once you have mastered the hairpin bends to the parking lot and your knees have stopped shaking, you are faced with a decision: walk down the small path to the narrow beach or just take pictures from above?

View of Seitan Limania beach in West Crete

It all depends on when you arrive there. From 11:00 a.m. on, this beach is full of tourists and locals who don’t want to miss the crystal clear, almost fluorescent blue water. We recommend that you leave Chania no later than 7:30 in the morning: Then you’ll be at the beach by 08:15 a.m. and have it almost all to yourself.

Itinerary for Western Crete Hiking Tour

Arrival in chania.

Upon your arrival to Crete, you will transfer from Chania airport to your hotel. Those who choose to fly into Heraklion airport will have a transfer to Heraklion Town included, but must book their own transfer to Chania to begin the tour (2.5-3.5h by bus).

After arriving in the most beautiful city in Crete, you will notice the stunning Venetian architecture, Turkish district and janissary mosque, Venetian port, and museums. Take some time to explore, wandering in the alleys, along the port, or simply hang around at the terrace of a café before turning in for the night.

Chania to Paleochora

Today you will take a two-hour bus ride to Paleochora (not included), which is a charming Cretan seaside village. Check into your hotel and enjoy a leisure day immersed in the Cretan atmosphere. Relax on the beautiful sandy beach, swim, and explore the village that is dominated by the ruins of Castello Selino, a 1279 Venetian construction.

Visit the Lagoon of Elafonissi

Head to Krio beach (transfer included) for the commencement of your hiking adventure. Here, you will follow the coastal path to Elafonissi, passing by the charming Agios Ioannis white chapel. Elafonissi's turquoise lagoon and pink sand rank it among Crete's most stunning seaside locations, though it can get crowded in the summer. Return to Paleochora with included transportation.

Hike from Paleochora to Sougia

Today you will embark on a magnificent coastal hike that ascends to a plateau, before descending through a gorge to the ancient Lyssos. Rich in Greek and Roman remnants, Lyssos is a historian’s paradise. Accessible solely by sea or foot, its emerald cove and port create a lush oasis. After, continue through the shady gorges of Selinou, where you will reach the picturesque village of Sougia with its port and beaches.

Rest Day in Sougia or Day Hike to Pikilassos

Today you will have the option to either take a day of rest on the splendid beach of Sougia or set out on a coastal hike towards the church of Agios Antonios and the site of Pikilassos, which is a small Cretan fishing village. There, you can swim in paradise and make the return trip to Sougia by foot or taxi-boat (not included). You can also decide to make the most of the village and of its beach.

Explore he Agia Irini Gorges

After breakfast you will make your way to the Agia Irini gorge's starting point (5 km), which can be done either on foot or by transfer (not included). On the hike, you will ascend the Agia Irini gorge, characterized by its wilder terrain compared to Samaria. Lush greenery lines the streambed with plane trees and oleanders; occasionally the water in the gorge flows until July.

After, you can either continue walking to Omalos village or arrange a transfer (not included; coordinate with the hotel in advance), reaching the plateau amidst grazing sheep. If you choose to walk directly to Omalos, add 2 hours and a 400 m ascent to the day’s activities.

Climb Gingilos (2,080m)

Begin the day with a transfer to the starting point for climbing Gingilos (2,080 m), which offers commanding views of Omalos plateau, Samaria gorges, the Aegean Sea to the north, and the Libyan Sea to the south. This captivating hike gradually reveals its beauty, with the final steep section offering splendid vistas. Opt for a route leading to the Kallergi mountain refuge (1,650 m) for a breathtaking perspective of the Samaria gorges. Return to Omalos on foot or by taxi (not included).

The Samaria Gorges

After breakfast, enjoy a brief transfer to Xyloskalo (included). This is the starting point of the renowned Samaria Gorge, a UNESCO-classified 16 km-long marvel. Descend through this breathtaking gorge to the village of Agia Roumeli on the southern coast, where you can indulge in a refreshing swim in the Libyan Sea. Note that the Samaria Gorge is open from May 1st to October 15th. If closed or due to inclement weather, a morning transfer to Sougia (approximately 1 hour, included) and a ferry journey (not included, around €12/person) to Agia Roumeli (departure at 09:20 am, arrival at 10 am) provide an alternative for exploration.

Agia Roumeli to Loutro

Today you will embark on a coastal hike that passes Agios Pavlos, a site with a 12th-century chapel believed to be where St. Paul landed and baptized the first Christians in the West. After, you will continue on to Loutro, an isolated village on the seaside that clings to the mountainside.

Throughout the hike, you will have the chance to alternate between walking and swimming, especially at Lykos beach with its turquoise waters and ancient Phoenix with a small port near Loutro. A taxi-boat can directly take you from the marble-slabs beach to Loutro. Explore the Venetian fort overseeing the sea and village. Loutro is exclusively accessible by sea or on foot.

The Aradena Gorges

Day 10 of the tour will see you set out on a stunning journey from Loutro, ascending to the olive tree-covered plateau of Anapoli where a rewarding panoramic view of the entire coast awaits. Take a moment at Anapoli to savor the mountain atmosphere in a local tavern. The return path winds through the deep gorges of Aradena, a haven for wild goats (kri kri), leading back to Loutro. For a shorter hike, descend to the gorge's lower part via Livaniana village. Alternatively, enjoy a leisurely day in Loutro with walks, swims at the marble beach, and visits to the Venetian fort in this idyllic setting.

Return to Chania

Today you will be able to enjoy some free time to explore or relax before taking the boat to Hora Sfakion (not included), then a regular bus back to Chania (not included).

Departure Day

Take one final morning to enjoy breakfast on Crete prior to your departure. Depending on the departure time of your flight, you might have some free time before making the transfer to Chania airport (included).
