Why the Galaxy Buds 3 inevitably looked like AirPods, according to Samsung's design exec

1549928918804.jpg

Following this Wednesday's Unpacked event , Samsung held an intimate roundtable with the press to answer our most burning questions. These are often the best opportunities to dig deeper into the minds of those in charge of industrial design decisions, software features, and general product philosophy.

Also: Samsung just unveiled its new Galaxy Buds 3. Here are the features I'm most excited about

In a conversation with Patrick Chomet, VP and head of customer experience, the Samsung executive was asked about the new Galaxy Buds 3 and 3 Pro -- specifically, how the earbuds were receiving backlash online  because of their striking resemblance to Apple AirPods. The fearless question was met with a fearless answer.

"I don't care," Chomet first responded. "My only answer is: Is it good for customers or not? Our job is to make good things for our customers." From my initial look and listen of the Galaxy Buds 3 Pro, the design benefits are certainly there.

Preorder the latest Galaxy foldables and save up to $1,500

"The sound is even more amazing because we have more space to update the speaker and subwoofer," Chomet lauded, with the Galaxy Buds 3 Pro featuring dual amps (one for bass and one for high tones) and frequency response support of up to 40kHz, twice that of the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro . Overall, you have a pair of earbuds that sound fuller and more powerful and have a wider spectrum for fine-tuning.

The stem design, which Samsung refers to as "blades," also gives the Galaxy Buds 3 series better directional audio -- a feature that switches seamlessly between active noise cancellation and transparency mode depending on whether someone is talking to you or sirens are blaring down the street -- due to the microphones on both earbuds now pointing closer to your mouth.

The Galaxy Buds 3 (left) and Buds 3 Pro (right).

Perhaps more importantly, Chomet said, the design of the Galaxy Buds 3 series should make them more universally comfortable to wear -- in ways, admitting that Apple nailed the ideal earbud form factor since the first-generation AirPods .

"People have very different ears, and they wear earbuds differently. So depending on very slight variations of how they wear them, the performance of the device can decrease," as Chomet reflects on the bulb-shaped design of previous Galaxy Buds models.

Also: Samsung's new Galaxy Buds 3 look nearly identical to Apple AirPods - and that's a good thing

As someone who's tested just about every pair of Samsung earbuds, including the bean-shaped Galaxy Buds Live and original Gear IconX, comfort and fit have been a longstanding issue that I'm glad the company is finally tackling -- even if it's doing so at the cost of some initial pushback from the public.

To Samsung's credit, the new Galaxy Buds aren't exactly a carbon copy of the AirPods. They also feature built-in LED strips that pulse when they're being charged or are in pairing mode. "We believe there is a future with gesture interactions, and the LED light is an area where Samsung can innovate," Chomet said.

Design Changes

Apple updated the design of the Safari tools that can be accessed through the URL bar. The tool icon is now a box with two lines, and tapping it brings you into full overlay window that's at the bottom of the display.

ios 18 safari design changes

Apple has also changed the design of the tab management page, with a unified toolbar for separate sections and tab groups.

New Quick Access Options

Some of the features that used to be tucked away in the Share Sheet are now more readily available through the Safari toolbar.

Locked Apps

Apps like Safari can be locked and hidden, requiring Face ID or Touch ID authentication to access them. Locking an app goes a step further than the protected private browsing feature that Apple introduced in an earlier version of iOS, as the entire Safari browser can be locked.

How Apple can clean up the mess that is Safari in iOS 15

Safari 15 beta 3

When Apple rolled out previews of the next versions of macOS , iOS , and iPadOS back in June, the most controversial aspect was the dramatic redesign the company gave to the Safari web browser. The new design sidelined much of the app’s user interface, choosing instead to prioritize web pages. And criticism has been fierce.

The good news is, based on the most recent preview releases of macOS, Apple is treating that Safari design more like a first draft than a final edition. Apple may not be going back to the drawing board with Safari 15, but it seems to be committed to listening to the criticism and making changes before the new design arrives on everyone’s devices this fall.

Safari isn’t just another app. I would argue that the web browser is the single most important app on just about any device, and on Apple’s devices, Safari reigns supreme. Sure, you can run other web browsers, but Apple would very much prefer all its users stick to Safari and would view any abandonment as a major embarrassment. The stakes are high.

With the latest beta releases, Safari on macOS has been left in a state that clearly can’t be the finished product—it’s a sign that Apple wants to show progress while still needing time to undo or tweak what it has done. On iPadOS, changes are in the works, but not visible yet. And on iOS, the new design feels a bit more entrenched but also still clearly in flux.

Why is this happening?

Apple isn’t redesigning Safari to mess with us, or because its designers are bored and looking for a project to stave off the ennui of Silicon Valley living. What it’s trying to do is get Safari’s interface out of the way of the web pages it’s displaying. The philosophy is admirable: We don’t use web browsers because they’re fun. They’re a means to an end and that end is the webpage itself.

For this round of updates, Apple has tried to minimize Safari’s interface as much as possible. Its designers have looked at every single interface element, from the tabs to the URL bar to every single toolbar item, and pondered if they could afford to hide, remove, or minimize those elements to give more space on the screen for the web page itself.

I think that Apple should be applauded for making the effort, not only because the vast majority of its customers are using screens that are at most 13 inches measured diagonally, but because Apple should always be striving to find better ways of doing things. I don’t believe there’s any class of app—from web browsers to email clients to text editors—that’s a solved problem. We can always do better. I want the owner of the operating systems I use the most to actively attempt to make my devices work better.

That all said, Safari 15 misses the mark. And while the newest beta of macOS improves matters a bit, there’s a whole lot more for Apple to do.

A broken work in progress

Safari 15 image stack

Separating the tab bar from the URL bar (top) makes the titles of tabs more readable than when they’re merged (bottom).

Jason Snell

While Apple’s philosophy of minimizing user interfaces might be admirable, its priorities are completely out of whack. Displaying another line or two of a webpage is nice, but not if I lose my reload button, can’t see the labels on any of my browser tabs, and can’t even find the location of the currently active tab.

In macOS Monterey beta 3, Apple has made one change that is a huge step in the right direction. It’s reverted its decision to merge the address bar and tabs into a single interface row. Giving the tabs a little more space means each of them can display a bit more of the title of their webpages, which can dramatically increase legibility. (I fully expect this design to make its way to iPadOS soon, too.)

safari 15 tabs

A close-up look at how tabs that don’t need to share space with the rest of the toolbar (top) are more legible than those without (bottom).

 alt=

Unfortunately, it’s still a bit of a mess. Tabs don’t display as tabs but as rectangular lozenges. It’s almost impossible to tell which tab is currently selected—navigating among open tabs is extremely disorienting. I’d understand this if Apple had decided that browser tabs were bad, but Safari 15 also introduces a clever new feature called Tab Groups that encourages the creation of an increasing number of open tabs. Left hand, meet right hand.

I keep some of my key favorites in my Safari toolbar, and with Toolbar Favorites enabled, Beta 3 gets even worse. The favorites appear beneath the tabs, breaking the entire metaphor and making it even harder to connect the currently open tab with its content.

Some toolbar buttons, such as Reload and Share, have also reappeared in the latest beta. If making tabs illegible is Safari 15’s biggest sin, hiding all functionality under a single junk-drawer of a menu was a strong second place. On the iPad, the Share menu is incredibly important and yet it was moved beneath a drop-down menu, requiring at least three taps to share anything. I’m glad it’s back, but the decision to hide it makes me wonder if Apple’s designers understand how people use these apps. And other important features are still buried deep down on the junk-drawer menu.

I also am not convinced Apple really has come up with a consistent story for how tabs work in Safari. Apple created Tab Groups, which sync across devices, but there’s also a tab group that’s not a tab group, which essentially matches the current behavior of Safari. Links from other apps open in the not-a-tab-group. There’s no way to tell Safari to open links in a specific tab group—and why isn’t that default not-a-group a synced group, anyway?

A few years ago, Apple also introduced the concept of Pinned Tabs , so you could place a few favorite pages on your tab bar permanently. It was a good idea, and I have had three pages pinned on Safari ever since. In Monterey, Pinned Tabs still exist, but only in the not-a-group tab set. Why aren’t they in Tab Groups? Why did they never show up on the iPad? If they’re a dead feature, why are they still kicking around? I have no idea.

Healing a self-inflicted wound

If you take a look at the calendar, you might be surprised to find that August is rapidly approaching and that Apple’s summer of betas is nearing its end. But the truth is, iOS and iPadOS probably won’t need to be finalized until September, and macOS could wait a bit longer than that. If the changes in the third betas of these operating systems are any indication, Apple is moving quickly to make changes. I want to be hopeful about that while also recognizing that the work-in-progress that is Safari in Monterey beta 3 is pretty awful.

Still, it’s a good sign that Apple is listening and now seems to be committed to making changes. But let’s be clear: this didn’t need to happen. I appreciate Apple’s ambition, but I’m troubled that someone looked at the state of Safari 15 and thought it was a project worthy of being displayed on stage at the WWDC keynote and used as a bullet point in the promotion of Apple’s latest operating systems. It’s up to Apple to clean up its own mess. If it doesn’t, then its users will suffer this fall.

Safari Not Working on Your iPhone? Here’s How to Fix It

Ojash Yadav

Although iPhones and iPads support other apps to reach the Web, Safari remains the most favored and frequently used browser for iOS users. Troubleshooting on Safari can be frustrating, especially if its issues prevent you from searching for a solution online. Here are a few common reasons why Safari may not be working on your iPhone and how to fix the problems.

Turn on Mobile Data for the Safari App

Disable experimental features, change your network settings.

Test Your Internet Connection

To begin with, ensure that the problem is with Safari and not with your internet connection. For this, open, say, a non-Apple app like Facebook or Chrome, and see whether the website or the feed loads. If it does, then Safari is at fault. Otherwise, your internet connection is at fault. If it’s the former, move on to the next step.

If you’ve been exploring your iPhone’s data-saving features, which let you specify which apps have access to your phone’s mobile data, then there’s a chance that you turned off mobile data for the Safari app. That means Safari will work when you’re connected to Wi-Fi but not to mobile data. (Try running Safari over Wi-Fi to test this.)

If that’s the case, then to turn mobile data back on for Safari, go to “Settings -> Mobile Data,” and then in the “Mobile Data” list, make sure the slider next to Safari is in the green “On” position.

Turn On Cellular Data For Safari App

You may not know about this, but Safari for the iPhone has a whole load of experimental features that you can disable and enable as you please.

The problem with these, as the name suggests, is that they are indeed experimental and subsequently don’t all work properly. Disabling them one by one can fix Safari if it’s not working and help you discover which exact feature was causing the problem,

On your iPhone, go to “Settings -> Safari -> Advanced -> Experimental Features.”

Turn On Cellular Experimental Features For Safari App

If you have more than one feature enabled here, disable just one, then check to see if Safari works normally again. If it doesn’t, re-enable that feature (if you want it) and disable the next one. Keep repeating this procedure until Safari starts working again.

Try resetting your Wi-Fi connection and reconnecting to the network.

  • Go to “Settings -> Wi-Fi” and turn it off, then turn it back on after a few seconds.

Turn Off And Turn On Wifi

  • If you’re using mobile data, go to “Settings -> Mobile Data” and turn “Mobile Data” off and back on after a few seconds.

Turn Off And Turn On Mobile Data

  • If neither option works, go to “Settings -> Wi-Fi,” connect to a different Wi-Fi network, and try loading the web page again.

Change Wifi Network

If the problem persists, try restoring your network settings to their original configuration.

  • Go to “Settings -> General -> Transfer or Reset iPhone -> Reset” and choose “Reset Network Settings.”

Common Problems With Safari And How To Solve Them

By following the fixes we’ve mentioned above, you should be able to revive Safari and make it work normally again. However, there are some specific issues that commonly come up with Safari. Here’s how to solve them.

Problem: Safari Crashed and Won’t Open

If you’ve ever panicked after Safari closed unexpectedly and couldn’t get the app to start, you probably encountered a bug that affects Safari’s search engine suggestions. This issue can cause the app to crash, freeze, or fail to start altogether. Although the bug usually plagues devices running iOS 10, it can affect just about any iPhone or iPad.

How to Fix It: Disable Search Engine Suggestions

Go to “Settings” and choose “Safari” in your list of apps. Here, find “Search Engine Suggestions” and turn it off.

Turn Off Seqarch Engine Suggestions

This feature offers suggestions for what you can search for as you type into Safari’s search bar. Disabling it gets rid of the problem for many users.

Problem: Safari Is Gray (and Won’t Open)

Sometimes when you update your iPhone’s iOS to a newer version, you may encounter a bug that turns some apps gray and prevent them from opening. This bug causes Safari to stop working and turns its icon gray when you switch to another app while Safari is running in the background.

How to Fix It: Update Your Software

To solve this problem, update your iPhone to the latest version of iOS. Apple includes important bug fixes in each software update, so it’s important to keep your iPhone or iPad up to date. iOS 11.1 fixed this bug for most users, so be sure to update to 11.1 or greater if you’re running an older version of iOS.

Go to “Settings -> General,” choose “Software Update,” and install the latest update.

Update Ios Software

Problem: Safari Is Slow

As powerful as your iPhone can be, it can get bogged down with all the extraneous information that it processes. If you notice that Safari takes longer to load pages or graphics, it may be time to do some housekeeping. Try clearing your browser history, website data, and cache to make Safari run more smoothly.

How to Fix It: Clear Your Data

To delete your cookies, cache, and browsing history, go to “Settings -> Safari,” choose “Clear History and Data,” and confirm that you want to go ahead. Safari will remember your AutoFill information if you choose this option.

Clear Website Data Safari

To keep your browsing history but clear your cache and cookies, first go to “Settings -> Safari -> Advanced.”

Safari Advance Settings Menu

There, choose “Website Data -> Remove All Website Data” and tap “Remove Now.” Note that Safari will not remember your AutoFill information if you choose this option.

Remove Website Data Safari 2

To remove only a portion of your browsing history, cache, and cookies, start by opening Safari and tapping the Bookmark icon. Here, open your history and tap “Clear.” Now Safari will give you the option to clear your history, cookies, and browsing data from the past hour, the past day, the past 48 hours, or from your entire history. Pick the relevant option.

Delete History Safari

Problem: Safari Still Isn’t Working

Although it sounds cliche, turning your phone off and back on again can be the solution to any number of Safari-related issues.

How to Fix It: Restart Safari or Reboot Your Phone

If none of the previous fixes help solve your problem, try restarting the app or rebooting your phone.

  • Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and press on the screen when your finger is near the center to open the multitasking view, and then swipe up on Safari to close it. This will reset Safari.
  • To shut down your phone, press and hold the sleep/wake button until a slider appears. Slide to the right to power off your phone. For iPhone X and above, press and hold the side button and one of the volume buttons until the slider appears. Then slide it to the right to power off your phone.

Hello, Anggiiee!

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities, it's great to have you here.

We see that you're having some issues with your iPad typing out your words unexpectedly. Being able to send messages and use your apps as you're expecting is definitely important. We're happy to try and shed some light.

It sounds like you may have Dictation enabled without realizing it. This is a feature built in to iOS where you can simply speak out loud and your device will transpose that to text.

If you want to disable that feature, however, you can do so by following the guidance here:

Use Dictation on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

We hope this does the trick for you!
