Reasons Why You Should Visit Kenya at Least Once

Watching wildebeest in the early morning at Maasai Mara National Reserve is just one amazing reason to visit Kenya

Long after you’ve left Kenya , some things will stay with you forever – witnessing the Great Migration in the Mara, sampling ‘ugali’ dough or relaxing on the pristine beaches of the Kenyan coast. Here are the top reasons to visit Kenya.

For the ultimate experience, join Culture Trip’s expertly curated seven-day adventure in Kenya . Highlights include game drives in Aberdare National Park, admiring flamingos in Lake Nakuru and learning about Maasai culture in the Loita Hills.

There are more than 100 operational wildlife conservancies in Kenya, split between public and private land across the country. Each one aims to preserve and promote healthy wildlife ecosystems, complementing Kenya’s national park system. From Ol Pejeta near Mount Kenya to Ol Kinyei near the border with Tanzania, conservancies provide visitors with unforgettable experiences of incredible animals .

2. Visit pristine beaches and sail the Kenyan coast

A visit to Kenya is incomplete without a visit to the beautiful beaches in Mombasa, Malindi, Diani and Lamu . Lapped by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, the coast offers snorkelling and kitesurfing adventures as well as complete relaxation. A view of a vast tea plantation in Kericho, Kenya

Whether you plan to hike , drive or cycle , the picturesque Kenyan landscapes will leave you in awe. From fields of green tea leaves in Kericho and the lush Kakamega rainforest, to the barren Nyiri and Chalbi deserts and towering peak of Africa’s second-largest mountain, Kenya’s nature is astounding. Make sure you explore beyond the safaris.

7. Check out the nightlife

Nightclub, Cocktails

People in Nairobi party hard, so hit the clubs and lounges and laugh with locals. Visit the Central Business District, Westlands, Ngong Road or Nairobi West for the coolest clubs – the best days to party are Thursday, Friday and Saturday. If you’re not into loud music and dancing, try the laid-back jazz night at K1 Klub House. Brew Bistro & Lounge on Ngong Road is known for its craft beer, rooftop bar and salsa dancing.

8. Have breakfast with a giraffe

When it comes to jewellery, you can always find beautiful items at Maasai Market and other Nairobi flea markets . These bustling places are also the best sites for buying clothing fabric, decor items and furniture . Recommended shops to visit in the capital include Kitengela Glass and Kazuri, for handmade beads.

25 Reasons to visit Kenya

Home » Kenya » 25 Reasons to visit Kenya

Wildebeest crossing the Mara river in the Masai Mara Game Reserve, Kenya. Image copyright Jurgen Vogt, Shutterstock | Travel Africa magazine

Kenya is a microcosm of Africa. It has more than fifty of the world’s most breathtaking national parks, harbours some of Earth’s most threatened wildlife and promises an experience that’s both spiritually moving and visually luminous. So, in case Kenya doesn’t already feature on your list of dream destinations, Jane Barsby tells you why it should.

01 Marvel at the Mara Home to the ‘greatest wildlife show on earth’ — the annual migration of one-and-a-half million wildebeest and their accompanying escort of zebra, antelope and predators — the Masai Mara remains Kenya’s most famous reserve thanks to the sheer brilliance of its game viewing. Here, in a single morning, you can expect to see vast numbers of elephant, lion, giraffe, hippo and a veritable kaleidoscope of plains game, interspersed with such superb sightings as a lone cheetah perched on a termite mound, a leopard up a tree or a family of warthogs high-tailing it across the savannah. • Walking is not allowed here, so if you’d like to hike across the Greater Mara, visit one of the many private conservancies that fringe the reserve.

02 Out of Africa Perhaps the greatest single influence on the country’s tourism was the Danish writer Karen Blixen, whose book Out of Africa was made into an award-winning film, thus prompting an entire generation to yearn for Kenya. Both begin with the words, ‘I had a farm in Africa, at the foot of the Ngong Hills’, and you can visit this house in the Karen district of Nairobi, where it has been turned into a museum. • While in Karen, why not stroke a giraffe at the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife Giraffe Centre or cuddle a baby elephant at The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s Elephant Orphanage.

03 Ghostly in Gedi Just north of Watamu, on the silver-blue Swahili coastline, are the remains of the thirteenth-century town of Gedi, which was allegedly deserted by its occupants at the approach of cannibals. Now it is a picturesque ruin with crumbling streets, market places, palaces and mosques, all buried in the dense coastal forest, where silky-cloaked colobus monkeys preen. But, for many centuries, as the sun sets, it has been reported that a dark presence follows those who linger too late, so beware. • Near the entrance to Gedi is Kipepeo, a butterfly farm where you can witness the entire cycle of a butterfly’s life.

04 Go west For an entirely different take on Kenya, visit western Kenya — famous for its green quilt of tea bushes that blankets the landscape and rolls down almost to the shores of mighty Lake Victoria. Once you’ve sipped tea here, you’ll never regard this delicious drink in quite the same light again. Clear and smokily aromatic, pure Kenyan leaves fresh from the bush taste quite different. • For the ultimate experience spend a night or two at the Kericho Tea Hotel.

05 Mine with the elephants High in the mist-wreathed hills of western Kenya, Mount Elgon is a towering volcanic giant, honeycombed by bat-filled, labyrinthine caverns where the world-famous ‘troglodyte’ elephants come to mine for salt. A place of wild moorland, dense forests and stark basalt cliffs, this is about as far off the beaten track as you can get. It’s ideal for a gentle stroll or strenuous trek alike. • If you’d like to explore the Kitum cave, the most famous of them all, you should email Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) in advance to arrange a guide.

Flamingos on Lake Bogoria, image credit Gudkov Andrey, Shutterstock | Travel Africa magazine

06 Visit a lake with a difference To appreciate the power of the convulsions that formed the mighty Great Rift Valley you need to visit Lake Bogoria National Reserve. The most dramatic yet least-visited of the Great Rift lakes, Bogoria is a long thin ribbon of pewter-blue water, often candy-frosted with flamingos, while around its shores 200 boiling geysers spew jets of water high into air that reeks of sulphur. Add to this the bizarre spectacle of visitors boiling eggs in the bubbling rock pools and fishing them out with long sticks, and you have a vision from an insanely beautiful hell. • Take a picnic (or camp) at the late President Mzee Jomo Kenyatta’s campsite, Fig Tree, 3km from Emsos Gate. He was so fond of this spot that he would often summon his long-suffering cabinet here.

07 Fighting for Fort Jesus Bone-grey, red-stained and exuding blind-eyed malevolence from its ruined battlements, sixteenth-century Fort Jesus, in Mombasa, encapsulates the bloody history of the Swahili Coast. Built by the Portuguese, it dominates the city and now offers tours, a museum and, in the evening, a son et lumière show, followed by a Portuguese-style dinner beneath the stars. • To enjoy an atmospheric evening, board the Tamarind dhow for dinner and dancing. It sails up to the fort and back to Nyali Bridge.

08 Think pink It’s not until you stand on the shoreline, just metres away from a shifting mass of several thousand jabbering, dipping, sifting, murmuring flamingos, that you realise just how very pink they are. To experience the full-frontal fuchsia fusion, you should go to Lake Nakuru. • Nakuru is also Kenya’s leading rhino sanctuary; it’s the only park where it’s almost impossible not to see a rhino (black or white), as well as being a good place to spot leopards.

09 Travel back in time Olorgesailie is almost exactly as it was 1.2 million years ago, give or take the odd tyrannosaurus rex. Kenya’s answer to Jurassic Park, this prehistoric site is where our earliest ancestor Homo erectus once hunted for giant pigs, hairy mammoths and gigantic baboons. • This is a great place for a fascinating hike, as a complex series of walkways leads up to and over the piles of axes and bones. The heat of the day can be draining, so be sure to set out in the early morning or late afternoon.

10 Fly high Take to the skies for a bird’s-eye view of the traditional safari. Look down on a lion kill from the basket of your hot-air balloon, set out on a helicopter safari around Laikipia, the Chalbi Desert or the Matthews Range, or fly around the snowy peaks of Mount Kenya in an executive jet. And for those who’d like to add some spice to their flight, there are hang-gliding, paragliding, microlight flying and kitesurfing. • Kenya is one of the cheapest and most pleasurable places to qualify as a pilot. book a course through Kenya School of Flying.

Hell's Gate National Park, image copyright Nataliya Ulyanikhina, Shutterstock | Travel Africa magazine

11 Biking in hell There is only one national park in Kenya in which you can ride (and hire) a mountain bike: Hell’s Gate. Cleft deep into the floor of the Rift Valley, it offers a volcanic landscape of tortured basalt cliffs, rock towers, sultry steaming vents and belching plumes of steam. You can also walk through the park, which is the largest geothermal field in the world. •  Adjacent to Hell’s Gate is Elsamere conservation Sanctuary, the former home of Joy Adamson of Born Free fame, which is now an animal refuge offering educational tours and homemade teas.

12 Spot a sitatunga Kenya’s smallest national park, the three-square-kilometre Saiwa Swamp, has none of the usual pop-up-top safari vehicles. In fact, it has no cars at all — just sun-dappled woodland paths that wind through a luminous-green realm, alive with dragonflies, butterflies, monkeys and birds. It is also one of the last-known sanctuaries of the semi-aquatic sitatunga antelope, which dances across the water on its specially splayed feet. • The optimum time to see the sitatungas is at dawn, so stay overnight in one of the park’s tree houses to catch them unawares.

13 Tee off on a volcano Kenya has 40 golf courses in some stunning locations. There aren’t many places where you’ll encounter the rule: ‘If a ball comes to rest… close to a hippopotamus or crocodile, another one may be dropped at a safe distance, but no nearer the hole, without a penalty’. It certainly adds to the sense of anticipation on the green. • Stay at Heritage Hotels’ Great Rift Valley Lodge and Golf Resort (below), near Lake Naivasha, and tee off down the slopes of a volcano.

14 Watch the sun go down on the equator A relic of the Edwardian big-game hunting days, the sundowner is a modern-day safari must. Ideally, set out at 4pm as the afternoon cools, the sun lowers in the sky and the nocturnal creatures begin to stir. Be sure to arrive at your chosen scenic spot by 6pm to set out your chairs and sit back, cocktail in hand, to enjoy the show. • The pick of sundowner spots are in Tsavo West National Park (above), where you can either climb Poachers’ Lookout or sip with the raptors at Roaring Rocks.

15 Get twitching With more than 1070 species, Kenya has the second most extensive bird list of any country in Africa, but it’s the vibrancy and ease of the spotting experience that make it so special for amateurs and professionals alike. Top of the tweets is Lake Baringo, closely followed by the Arabuko-Sokoke Forest, the Kakamega Forest National Reserve and, of course, the famous Masai Mara. • For advice on destinations and guides, consult the East African Natural History Society.

16 Run wild Kenya has bred some of the most famous athletes in the world. It’s also the venue for the famous Lewa Marathon, which takes place in June in the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, which allows you to run through the pristine wilderness of Laikipia, a glorious privately owned area that abounds in wildlife and is set against the showstopping backdrop of Mount Kenya. • To jog alongside the Kenyan greats, go to the High Altitude Training Centre in the town of Iten, some 300km north of Nairobi where all the big names train.

Nairobi National Park, image credit Ismail9999, Shutterstock | Travel Africa magazine

17 Safari in the morning and dine on croc in the evening The ‘Safari Capital of the World’, Nairobi is the only city to have a national park just ten minutes from its centre. The rolling plains harbour around 100 recorded mammal species, including rhino, buffalo, lion, leopard, crocodile and hippo. Easily accessible by taxi, Nairobi National Park offers a mini Kenyan safari that can be enjoyed in one morning. • Afterwards head to the city’s world-famous Carnivore Restaurant, where you can sample everything from crocodile to ostrich.

18 Conquer Mount Kenya A magnificent extinct volcano, Mount Kenya is cloaked in a unique mosaic of forest, moorland, rock and ice, crowned by the glittering twin peaks of Batian (5199m) and Nelion (5188m). • Almost anyone in robust health can attempt the 3-day trek to Point Lenana (4985m), but allow five days for the round trip. For information contact the Mountain Club of Kenya.

19 Meet the Maasai Of all its many attractions, Kenya’s most enduring is the genuine warmth of its people. Best known of its ethnic groups are the scarlet-cloaked Maasai, who live a lifestyle that has remained unchanged for centuries. • Enjoy a Maasai-guided walk, style your own traditional wedding or visit a manyatta (‘settlement’), with Serena Hotels.

20 Dive in The Indian Ocean coastline promises crescents of silver sand, year-round warm waters, waving coconut palms and a world-class line-up of watersports, including coral-garden snorkelling, dhow sailing, game fishing, diving with dolphins, whale shark watching and turtle nest protection. • If you’re hooked on the idea of game fishing, book a few nights at Hemingways Watamu.

21 Feel the heat Searingly hot and arid, Samburu National Reserve lies on the fringes of a vast desert once known as the Northern Frontier District, whose scorched landscape ranges from rugged cliffs to meandering brown rivers, where hippos wallow and the mudbanks are embroidered by grinning bands of crocodiles. • Samburu’s wildlife includes some specimens you rarely find elsewhere, such as the reticulated giraffe, the Beisa oryx, the gerenuk and the blue-shanked Somali ostrich.

22 Gallop across the plains Kenya’s equestrian history dates back to the settler days, and there are many opportunities for both beginners and experienced riders. At private ranches such as Great Plains Conservation’s Ol Donyo Lodge in the Chyulu Hills horseback outings allow you to get much closer to the wildlife than would ever be possible in a vehicle. Viewing an elephant from horseback or galloping alongside a giraffe takes some beating. • Alternatively, opt for a different kind of steed and set out across the Samburu National Reserve on a camel. You can book this through a company such as Wild Frontiers.

23 Dip into Eden In the middle of the khaki, barren landscape of northern Kenya’s Sibiloi National Park lies Lake Turkana, the world’s largest permanent desert lake, whose shimmering, blue-green waters have earned it the name the Jade Sea. On its eastern shore you’ll find the three-million-year-old Koobi Fora palaeontological site, discovered by Dr Richard Leakey in 1968. Sibiloi is the almost universally recognised ‘Cradle of Mankind’. • If you visit the onsite Sibiloi museum you can view, among other fossil phenomena, a three-million-year-old giant tortoise.

24 Safari in the shadows of Kili Amboseli National Park’s emerald-green swamps, in which great herds of elephants wallow half-submerged, are dominated by the magnificent, snow-capped Kilimanjaro. Its panoramic vistas have led it to be favoured by Hollywood professionals and amateur photographers alike. • The ideal place for watching wildlife graze under the shadow of Kili is Observation Hill, which is best visited at 6pm.

25 Go eco-shopping For those who love to shop, Kenya has it all: beadwork, hand-woven linens and rugs, safari wear and art. It’s also a treasure trove of alternative gifts such as jewellery wrought from seeds, handbags fashioned from beer-bottle tops, sandals made from old tyres and — the epitome of eco-friendly gifts — writing paper made from rhino or elephant dung. • For eco-friendly presents, mostly made in cooperation with women’s self-help groups and street children rescue organisations, check out The Banana Box Company.

There’s so much to see and do when you visit Kenya. As one of Africa’s most famous destinations, it has a high concentration of all the very best the continent has to offer. This destination will surprise and enchant every visitor, including everything from world-class cities and fascinating culture to diverse wildlife, fauna and flora.

We share ten of our top reasons why you should add Kenya to your African itinerary.

1. Meet The Famous Maasai

a-group-of-maasai-warriors-in-kenya

One of the most famous African cultures is that of the Maasai. There are many derivatives of this heritage, each with unique customs and traditions. This is evident in the cultural villages scattered around the Maasai Mara Reserve, blending into a symbiotic relationship with the wildlife deep in the African bush.

Read more about their  unique African traditions , giving insight into what makes them a focal point in Kenya’s history.

2. Enjoy Some of Africa’s Best Game Viewing

Home of the wide-open Savannah plains, Kenya is most famous for safaris. The Maasai-Mara ,  Amboseli  and  Tsavo are among the most famous. However, there are over 60 national parks and reserves found throughout the country.

Visit Kenya to find yourself in a wildlife paradise where sightings of the Big 5 are almost guaranteed. Other exciting species you can expect to see are cheetah and a variety of antelope. Keen photographers should also keep an eye out for the ultimate Savannah shot, featuring a flat-topped acacia tree set against the golden sunset.

3. Relax on Kenya’s Rustic Beaches

The beach in Malindi Kenya

Beaches may not be the first thing that springs to mind when thinking about Kenya. However, its Indian Ocean coastline is simply sublime. The white sands and warm waters of Diani Beach and Watamu are straight out of a tropical island paradise dream.

Soak up the sun on Funzi Island or along the Lamu Archipelago for a relaxing beach break. Alternatively, explore the enchanting cultural influences of Mombasa and venture to various other historical colonial ports along the coast that shaped Kenya’s fascinating history.

4. See Cultures Collide In The Old Town of Lamu

A UNESCO World Heritage site, the Old Town of Lamu has been continuously inhabited for over 700 years. Lamu’s architecture and urban structure showcase the cultural influences that collided here over hundreds of years. These influences stem from Europe, Arabia, and India, combining with the traditional Swahili techniques for the distinct culture it’s known for today.

Highlights here include seeking hidden secrets in the narrow alleyways of this bustling town and experiencing sacred traditional ceremonies.

5. Live Your Best Life At Luxury Safari Lodges

elewana-loisaba-kenya

Kenya is the classic safari destination. Therefore, as you may expect, it’s host to a vast array of luxury safari lodges . As a result of their prime location, world-class service and fine dining, you can expect only the very best at these establishments.

In addition, expert guides at each lodge provide insight into local heritage and the area’s astounding fauna and flora. A luxury safari experience in Africa comes with an old-world sense of adventure, encapsulated in sophistication. There’s simply no better way to safari than in style!

6. Experience The Great Migration

Wildebeest crossing river during Great Migration

A must for any nature enthusiast visiting Kenya is witnessing the Great Migration . This is, without a doubt, nature’s most remarkable journey and features thousands of wildebeest, zebra and gazelle traversing across East Africa.

The herds are most often present in the  Maasai Mara from June through to October. However, August is the best bet for seeing the river crossings made famous by nature documentaries. Where the herds go, the predators follow. Therefore, any Great Migration safari is bound to offer an array of thrilling wildlife sightings and experiences.

7. Visit Kenya for its Cosmopolitan Capital City

Nairobi by night.

Nairobi is a vibrant and modern African city, complete with boutique shopping, artisan eateries, tech start-ups and high-rise buildings. Moreover, it’s home to several art galleries and the Kenyan National Theatre. As a result, Nairobi is known as the country’s arts and culture hub.

Friendly faces greet you around every corner while you enjoy all the comforts of home with the special touches of Africa. One of the city’s unique features is that it’s one of the only places in the world where you can see four of the Big 5, set against a backdrop of skyscrapers. This is due to the city’s proximity of Nairobi National Park.

8. Admire Africa’s Great Lakes

flamingos lake nakuru kenya

Africa’s Rift Valley Lakes network across three large catchments, spanning several borders. Kenya is home to eight of these lakes, including Lake Naivasha, a freshwater source that draws exquisite birdlife. Lake Nakuru is a “soda lake” famous for attracting large flocks of flamingos feeding in the shallows.

The region’s natural biodiversity led to the area around the lake being proclaimed a national park in 1961. Today, tourists can visit one of the many luxury lodges around the lakes. Furthermore, guests can enjoy a boating safari for a unique vantage point of the wildlife.

9. Exchange Winter for Warmer Climates

Ein Geländewagen und ein Baum, dahinter ein gelber Sonnenuntergang

Africa generally has hotter weather than most European countries. More importantly, it also has more consistent temperatures. In contrast to European winters, an African winter may consist of the occasional dry chill or a thunderous downpour. However, the weather is mostly mild.

Kenya, in particular, enjoys very mild temperatures and weather patterns year-round. This means that, while it’s still quite hot during midday in summertime, the mornings and afternoons reach a pleasant temperature, often complemented by a cool breeze.

10. Marvel At Magical Mountain Peaks

Mount Kenya at sunrise.

Kenya has a breathtaking collection of mountains, including Mount Kenya, Mount Longonot and Mount Elgon. And although it’s technically in Tanzania , you can also see Mount Kilimanjaro from Kenya’s side of the border.

Some might even argue that Kenya’s Amboseli National Park is among the best places to view Africa’s highest peak. However, if you book with one of the many lodges close to the border, you’ll get best of both worlds. Therefore, you’ll get to enjoy both refined Kenyan safaris and adventurous treks in Tanzania for the ultimate East African trip.

Witness the great migration.

One of the most amazing spectacles in nature is the Great Migration. Every year, millions of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles make their way across East Africa in search of fresh grass and water. They face many challenges along the way, such as predators, droughts, and river crossings.

The best time to witness this phenomenon is between July and October, when the herds arrive in Kenya’s Maasai Mara Reserve. Here you can see them cross the Mara River, where crocodiles await them. You can also see lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, and other predators following them.

The Great Migration is a thrilling and unforgettable experience that you don’t want to miss.

Immerse in the Fascinating Maasai Culture

Another reason to visit Kenya is to learn about its rich and diverse culture. One of the most renowned groups in Africa is the Maasai people. They are known for their distinctive red clothing, colorful beads, elaborate rituals, and close connection with wildlife.

You can visit a Maasai village and see how they live. You can also join them in their dances, ceremonies, and storytelling. You can even spend a night in a traditional Maasai hut.

The Maasai culture is a fascinating and inspiring one that will leave you with a deeper appreciation of Africa.

Of course, one of the main reasons to visit Kenya is to see its incredible wildlife . Kenya is home to some of the best game viewing opportunities in Africa. You can also visit the Koobi Fora Museum, where you can see some of the fossils and artifacts that have been discovered in the area. You can also learn about the history and culture of the local tribes, such as the Turkana, Samburu, and Rendille.

Lake Turkana is a fascinating and important place that will make you appreciate your roots.

Enjoy Kenya’s Mild Climate

Another reason to visit Kenya is to enjoy its mild climate. Kenya has pleasant weather all year round, with no harsh winters or seasons. The average temperature is around 25°C (77°F), with variations depending on the altitude and location.

The best time to visit Kenya depends on what you want to see and do. Generally speaking, the dry seasons (January-February and June-October) are good for wildlife viewing, while the wet seasons (March-May and November-December) are good for birding and green scenery.

You can also visit Kenya during its festivals and events, such as Jamhuri Day (December 12), which celebrates Kenya’s independence; Madaraka Day (June 1), which commemorates Kenya’s self-rule; and Lamu Cultural Festival (November), which showcases Lamu’s Swahili heritage.

Experience World-Class Birding

If you are a bird lover, then you should visit Kenya. Kenya is one of the best birding destinations in Africa. It has over 1,000 species of birds, ranging from tiny sunbirds to huge ostriches. You can see colorful and exotic birds, such as flamingos, lilac-breasted rollers, bee-eaters, hornbills, and turacos.

The best places to see birds in Kenya are the Great Rift Valley Lakes, where you can see millions of flamingos and other waterbirds; Kakamega Forest, where you can see rare and endemic forest birds; and Arabuko-Sokoke Forest, where you can see endangered and unique birds, such as the Sokoke scops owl and the Clarke’s weaver.

You can also join a birding tour or hire a local guide to help you identify and spot the birds.

Sample Delicious Kenyan Cuisine

Another reason to visit Kenya is to sample its delicious cuisine. Kenya has a diverse and flavorful cuisine that reflects its history and culture. You can taste dishes that are influenced by Arab, Indian, British, and African cuisines.

Learn Some Swahili Words

Another reason to visit Kenya is to learn some Swahili words. Swahili is one of the official languages of Kenya, along with English. It is also widely spoken in other parts of East Africa. Swahili is a beautiful and expressive language that has many words that are borrowed from Arabic, Persian, Portuguese, and other languages.

Learning some Swahili words will help you communicate with the locals and appreciate their culture. You can also impress them with your knowledge and interest in their language.

Contribute to Conservation and Community Projects

Another reason to visit Kenya is to contribute to conservation and community projects. Kenya has many organizations and initiatives that are working to protect its wildlife, environment, and people. You can join them as a volunteer or a donor and make a positive difference.

18 reasons why Kenya should be your next holiday destination

Loisaba, in Kenya's Laikipia county

T heresa May has been in  Kenya , attempting to boost trade ties (and not, thankfully, dancing). Here are 18 good reasons to start planning a trip of your own.

1. You might spot the Big Five

Kenya is easily one of Africa’s greatest wildlife watching destinations, home as it is to the Big Five (African lion, African elephant, Cape buffalo, African leopard, and white/black rhinos). Responsible safari operators include Sarara Camp and Kampi Ya Kanzi, says Lisa Grainger, a writer for Telegraph Travel, who visits Africa frequently. “The local people own the camps and all the benefit goes back into their own communities, rather than a rich operator’s pocket,” she said.

Kenya is easily one of Africa's greatest wildlife watching destinations

2. Or witness the greatest migration on Earth

From mid-August to October, more than a million wildebeest  migrate from the Serengeti  in neighbouring Tanzania to Kenya’s Maasai Mara, accompanied by hundreds of thousands of Thomson’s gazelle, zebra and eland. Despite the plethora of videos and photography of the migration available online, nothing comes close to seeing in person the mass movement of animals, lumbering, strutting and swaying in one of the great wonders of the natural world.

The wildebeest migration is one of the world's greatest natural spectacles

3. Entry is simpler than ever

Kenyan authorities introduced an e-visa system in 2015, meaning British travellers no longer need apply for entry documents before travelling, or queue at the airport for all the right stamps. A single entry visa costs $51 per person (£39) and the e-visa site is linked from the  Foreign Office’s Kenya travel advice page . Ensure that you use the official e-visa website to avoid being scammed by fake providers.

4. It's ideal for safari first-timers

Brian Jackman, Telegraph Travel's safari expert, recommends Kenya as one of the best countries in Africa for those on their  first wildlife watching expedition . “If you catch an overnight flight from Heathrow you can transfer to a light aircraft next morning and be in the bush in time for brunch,”  he said. “Such things are possible in Nairobi because Kenya’s safari industry is backed up by an efficient tourist infrastructure with a dazzling choice of camps and lodges to suit all budgets. This is, after all, where modern safaris were invented back in the Twenties.”

5. Big cats abound

The Maasai Mara is one of the best places in  Africa to encounter big cats . “Cheetahs and lions roam the plains, waiting for the migrating wildebeest, and leopards pose in its riverside fig trees,” wrote Jackman in his guide to the  10 best luxury safaris in Africa . “In fact, the animals are so associated with this region that the BBC chose the Mara for their Big Cat Diary TV series.”

Kenya is renowned for its populations of big cats

6. After a safari, flop on the beach

Kenya’s geography means that it offers the perfect combination of fauna-and-flora spotting adventures in its dozens of mighty national parks, and opportunities for lying prostrate on white sand Indian Ocean beaches.  Africa Travel  recommends an 10-day safari-and-beach itinerary, with the first stop at Kicheche Laikipia Camp, home to the country’s highest population of black rhino, as well as elephant, cheetah, lion, and leopard. Guests then move onto a beach hotel for a couple of days of watersports and relaxation.

A dhow punctures the horizon along Kenya's Indian Ocean coast

7. The bird life will have you all a flutter

Kenya has more than 1,000 recorded bird species, including flamboyant crowds of pink flamingos whose massing makes for surreal photographs. They have been driven from Lake Nakuru in the past half decade because of industrialisation and rising water levels, and many have moved to Lake Bogoria, which covers 32 square kilometres (12 sq miles). The matchstick-legged birds can be seen feeding on the algae that gives them their candyfloss hue amid geysers that result from the lake’s geothermal activity. Also visit Lake Naivasha, home to Golden-winged Sunbirds, Superb Starlings and African Fish Eagles –  Naturetrek  runs small group wildlife-watching tours.

8. You can sleep under the stars

Loisaba Lodge is set in a 61,000 acre reserve , and guests can experience the wilderness by night in private huts open to the skies a 20-minute drive from the main building. Beds, which can be wheeled out into the open or taken inside if the weather turns, overlook either a watering hole or a river where there is every chance of catching sight or sound of passing game.

It sits in  Laikipia, the most heavenly corner of the country . “This is the Africa of dreams: the air fragrant with the smell of greenery, alive with the sound of creatures, and, at night, lit up by what seems like a trillion stars,” says Lisa Grainger.

9. Mount Kenya rivals Mount Kilimanjaro

Less well-known than its Tanzanian sister, Mount Kilimanjaro, and considered a more challenging climb among mountaineers, Mount Kenya sits in its own national park, amid endemic fauna and flora. The highest of three peaks rises to 5,199m, although this requires a technical climb. Even the lowest of its three summits, though, offers astounding panoramas over the plains and savannah below, and as you ascend through the foothills you may spot elephant, black ehino, Cape buffalo, Colobus monkey, antelope and giant forest hog.

Mount Kenya is considered a more challenging climb than Kilimanjaro

10. It has ancient sites that will interest everyone

Even for those who sigh at the prospect of poking around old ruins, the former town of Gedi near Kenya’s coast will not fail to captivate. With origins in the 12th century, this Swahili town reached its zenith in the 15th century, and its wealth is indicated by the clusters of mosques, a magnificent palace and houses, all in 45 acres of primeval forest. It was first visited as an archaeological site by Sir John Kirk, a British resident of Zanzibar in 1884, and is today maintained by the  National Museums of Kenya .

11. It’s home to one of the Queen’s favourite hotels

Founded in 1932, Treetops is Kenya’s oldest safari lodge, and  Princess Elizabeth was in residence here  when she was told of the death of her father, King George VI, prompting her ascendency to the throne. “For the first time in the history of the world,” wrote big-game hunter Jim Corbett in the Treetops logbook, “a young girl climbed into the tree as a princess and climbed down as a queen.”

Treetops

12. Wills proposed to Kate in Kenya

Kate Middleton and Prince William stayed at Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in the foothills of Mount Kenya in October 2010, and came home engaged after the heir to the throne proposed at the luxury lodge. Unesco-listed Lewa, which has 55,000 acres of savannah, is home to the Grevy’s zebra, and more than 70 black rhinos, as well as elephants, lions and cheetah.

13. Tourism protects Kenya’s people and wildlife

Indeed, sensible tourism can be an alternative to poaching and discourage people from engaging in it. Telegraph Travel’s Lisa Grainger writes: “If tourism dies in Kenya, then there is no one to support the people who make their living from it, and the rangers who protect the wildlife. So communities have to turn to wildlife for food – and are forced to go into the cities to look for work. Tourism here really does protect traditional ways of life, and cultures, and wilderness.”

Responsible tourism helps supports communities and conservation efforts

14. You’ll come home with pretty mementoes

Kenya is home to many talented craftspeople who make covetable objects. Look out for Kitengela glass, which is made in the middle of the bush, and products from Ocean Sole, which pays local people to pick up old shoes washed up on the beach and turn them into toys. Also look out for beaded belts and shoes, which are sold across the country.

15. You can eat breakfast accompanied by giraffes

The famous Giraffe Manor is set in 12 acres of private land in a Nairobi suburb and allows guests to participate in sunset feeding sessions. Expect other impromptu feeding sessions: the herd of Rothschild giraffes will often poke their heads through the windos of the manor house for extra treats.

The local giraffes are certainly not shy

16. Or witness the Great Rift Valley

Maasai herders, herds of elephant, wide plains and dramatic escarpments all define the Great Rift Valley, which reaches through Kenya as part of a 6,000-km long scar that stretches from Jordan in the Middle East across Africa to Mozambique.

The epic Rift Valley stretches all the way to Jordan

17. There's a national park called Hell’s Gate

Named after a narrow crack in the cliffs, once a tributary of a prehistoric lake, this national park north-west of Nairobi is home to Fischer's Tower and Central Tower columns. Visitors can walk among buffalo, zebra, eland and Thomson’s gazelle and see baboons scratching each other. Prepare to be rendered silent by the beauty of the Njorowa gorge’s red sandstone walls.

18. Nairobi has a thriving creative arts scene

More adventurous travellers will look to the capital, which has a reputation for high crime levels and few reasons to stick around. However, centres such as GoDown Arts Centre, Shifteye Gallery, and The Kuono Trust offer visitors and locals the chance to see Kenyan creative at work, showing another side to Nairobi. Live music fans should check out jazz, hip hop and dub performances too.

why should you visit kenya

why should you visit kenya

  • The Masai Mara
  • Amboseli National Park (with the exception of the rhino)

8. Simple Visa Processing

Visa processing to enter into Kenya as a tourist is quick and easy.  All you need to do is go to the eCitizen portal and apply online and within two days he will have received an email with the details of your visa.

You will need to make a payment of $51 per individual and you can  make the payment online.

For more information check out the Kenyan eCitizen portal for details on how to apply.

9. Well Developed Tourist Infrastructure

Kenya has a very well-developed tourism infrastructure.  The roads to most of the popular national parks are paved or well maintained except for oddities like the Maasai Mara Road.

The benefit for you as a tourist is that you will  have a more comfortable time when travelling around Kenya .

The government of Kenya has invested a lot in ensuring that the national parks are accessible, well-maintained and have good facilities that would allow tourists to be comfortable.

Here is an excerpt from one of the Local Newspaper expounding on the same

“According to Kenya’s development blueprint, Vision 2030, tourism is one of the country’s key economic drivers, along with agriculture and manufacturing. Tourism was allocated Sh4.5 billion in the current budget, while heritage, which falls under the Ministry of Sports, Culture and the Arts, was allocated a paltry Sh1.9 billion. The tourism budget is likely to be directed to international marketing while the real measure of worth for the tourism sector as a product would be consumer spending.” Nation Newspaper Wed. June 2018

The reason why Kenya invest so much in tourism  is due to the fact that tourism plays a major role in Kenya’s economy and the government would want to ensure that tourist have an easy time when visiting the country.

Compared to some of our neighbours, many of the national parks in Kenya are fairly easy to drive in even with non four-wheel drive vehicles and makes Kenya easier to travel to for safari.

The additional benefit of good tourist infrastructure is that the cost of doing business for tour operators in Kenya is low and this benefit can be passed on to tourists in Lower fees.

10. Mature Tourism Industry

why should you visit kenya

In addition to a good tourist infrastructure,  Kenya has very mature tourism industry with hundreds of tour operators providing services to tourists on all levels of comfort and budgets.

Courtesy of yr.no

You would expect similar weather conditions for other parts of Kenya with slight variations depending on the altitude.

why should you visit kenya

this means that the lowest it would ever get is 9°C (48°F) and this would be the coldest night of the coldest month of the year.

35. You can visit both Kenya and Tanzania Easily

Kenya and Tanzania are fairly close to each other and travelers frequently visit both countries during their safaris.

During your trip for your safaris, it is very likely that you will cross the Equator multiple times and you will find signs like this indicating that “you are now crossing the equator”

One of the interesting things that you might want to try out in Kenya is the i nternational Carmel derby held in Maralal.

The diversity of Kenya’s tourism offering makes it perfect for tourists on the whole spectrum of budgets possible.  Whether you are a budget traveler seeking to backpack around the country or a luxury traveler looking for the most prestigious lodges,  you’ll find what you’re looking for in Kenya.

There are a large number of companies catering to the budget traveler with many  tourist cities having hostels that cater to international guests.

On the other end of the spectrum are companies like Abercrombie and Kent that cater to tourists seeking high-end luxury safaris and vacations.

Whether you have just a little to spend or a boatload of cash you will find a good safari that fits your needs in Kenya.

I have written an article on how much money you need for you to be able to travel to Kenya.   Check it out to see  a more detailed explanation on the same.

39. Skydiving on the beach

Another unique thing about Kenya is that you can skydive off the coast of Diani  at the Kenyan coast.

Skydivediani Gives you the opportunity to skydive from the coast of Malindi with an amazing view of the Indian Ocean and the Reef near the beach. Here is a quote from their founder

“The Kenyan coastline is amongst the finest scenery in the world; the beaches are breathtaking and the calm sea waters protected by the reef have an indescribable color when you look at them from above. I jumped onto the beach with some friends for a week or so in 2013, but knew that we had to create a permanent place to skydive.”

I have no affiliation with Skydivediani.com,  I just thought they were an interesting activity to recommend

40. Fancy Matatu Art (Public Transport Vehicles)

Public transport vehicles in Kenya,  popularly known as matatus, are moving pieces of art. Painted with  dazzling graffiti artwork, they represent our rich culture and our affinity for the West.

When you come to Nairobi keep a lookout for minibusses that looks like the picture above and admire the beautiful work done on them.

A Final Word

As you prepare for your trip to Africa, I would like to recommend a few products that would help make your life easier.

  • Information About Africa: I have created a YouTube channel that focuses on things about traveling to Africa that only Africans can tell you about. Check out the channel for insights about African culture and things you can do as a traveler to optimize your trip. You should also visit TripAdvisor forum posts ( Here is the Kenya Forum ) and ask questions about your particular situation. There are a lot of people who are happy to help you out.

It is usually thrilling and comforting to visit a country with friendly locals. You feel like you are in your home nation. Most citizens in African countries are welcoming.

People in Kenya are supportive and willing to associate with foreign visitors. Once there make sure to reach out to them, try to speak the local language, and more. This is an experience you shouldn’t miss.

Security matters a lot. No one would wish to visit a destination that is threatened by war and political unrest. With Kenya, it is just a tick.

The country is stable and invites tourists to come and explore its natural wonders at any time or date of the year.

Wildebeest migration

This is one of the most liked events in Africa. Popularly known as the great Wildebeest migration, this action includes thousands of animals that move from Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park to the vast grasslands in Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve.

The list includes wildebeests, gazelles, buffaloes, and different antelopes. The animals engage in long treks and cross rivers in search of greener pastures.

You can only behold this migration in Kenya or Tanzania. It occurs every year and enchants tourists with unending spectacular views of wild animals, savannah, and other scenery. If you love wildlife, this migration is for you.

Vibrant cities

If you prefer city life to nature, you are also covered. Kenya has multiple cities for you to enjoy. One of them is Nairobi. Popularly known as the capital, this city is the largest in the nation.

It is also home to the country’s largest airport named Jomo Kenyatta international airport. From Nairobi, you can extend your city tour to Kisumu, Mombasa, Eldoret, Nakuru, and a lot more.

Rich culture

Other than Wildlife, Kenya is loved for its great culture. Different tribes occupy land in various corners of the country. Tourists visit them to soak up their cultural norms.

One of the interesting tribes you shouldn’t miss is the Masai. These people delight visitors with their local displays including attires, food, handmade products, and performances like singing and dancing.

Delicious cuisine

If you are a foodie, don’t hesitate to try Kenya’s local food.

A food tour in Kenya takes you to different eateries and taste the dishes prepared by local chefs. Some of the staples you can try are Ugali, Kenyan stew, Pilau, Sukuma wiki, and more.

To have a remarkable experience start with local markets in Nairobi. Later on, you can visit other places for more beautiful moments.

Variety of attractions

Kenya has no shortage of things to see and do. Whether you need wildlife, city tours, hiking adventures, or beach encounters, there is something for you.

Protected areas like national parks, reserves, and sanctuaries are some of the reasons that travelers visit Kenya.

A Wildlife Safari in Kenya takes you to prominent places like Masai Mara, Tsavo East, and West, Amboseli National Park to mention but a few.

Great accommodation

Adding to the attractions, Kenya pleases tourists with its great accommodation facilities. Places for tourism are packed with lodging structures of different categories reserved for guests to stay while on holiday.

The list includes tented camps, mobile camps, self-contained and non-self-contained cottages. Most of these structures are within and just outside the protected areas. A tour to Kenya won’t disappoint. Just give it a try and explore all that it has to offer.

Is Kenya worth visiting? Read why you should visit Kenya at least once in your lifetime

Kenya’s breathtaking landscapes, wildlife, fascinating sunsets, people, the sounds of lions roaring, elephants trumpeting, birds singing, monkeys screaming, hyenas laughing, and the smell and taste of Africa will create your lifetime experience and stay in your heart forever like it stayed in mine.

Moreover, Kenya has one of the most beautiful beaches. Not only Kenya but the whole of Africa is so special in every way, even the sun shines more beautifully here. And so I fell in love with Africa.

If you want to know all the reasons why Kenya is worth visiting, keep reading.

Is Kenya Worth Visiting?

Kenya is a very popular tourist destination, mostly because of the safari and wildlife but also for its beautiful white sandy beaches. Kenya pays high attention to the tourism industry as it is one of the most important sources of income for the country.

Hotels and lodges are prepared for tourists with excellent customer service and welcoming hospitality. Kenya’s people are very welcoming and friendly.

If you are not sure whether it is worth flying such a long distance to Kenya and spending money on your trip, let me tell you the reasons why you should visit Kenya at least once in your lifetime.

1. Safari Adventures

The number one and the most important reason why Kenya is worth visiting and why we also visited Kenya is Safari Adventure. There are many National Parks which you can visit.

The best and biggest are Maasai Mara, Amboseli National Park, Tsavo East, and West, Samburu National Reserve, and more.

All of these parks are full of wildlife which you will see during your day driving around. Tourists usually take organized tours with a professional guide and a driver who knows every meter of the parks, and everything about the animals living here. We were not an exception.

Elephants crossing the road on Kenya Safari

We went to Amboseli National Park, and Tsavo East as we stayed in Malindi which is a small town close to Mombasa and these two parks were the closest.

We spent one night in Tsavo East in a lodge called Voi Wildlife Lodge and one night in Amboseli National Park in Kibo Safari Camp with a stunning view of Kilimanjaro.

While driving through the parks you can see zebras, elephants, giraffes, hyenas, wild dogs, wild pigs, lions, buffalos, wildebeest, hippos, cheetahs, antelopes, and monkeys. We haven’t seen rhinos as these are mostly in Maasai Mara.

You can see these animals very close to your car and you see them behaving in their natural habitat. It is not like a zoo. We saw lions relaxing in the grass, cheetahs hunting antelopes, and elephants crossing the roads.

When you go for a game drive you should not get out of the car as it is dangerous, while staying in the car is safe.

It is very difficult to describe how amazing an experience it is in Kenya’s nature with the animals and with the most extraordinary sunset. Even if this is the only reason to visit Kenya, it is worth it.

2. Great Migration

Great Migration is the migration of wildebeests and zebras crossing the Mara River from Maasai Mara, Kenya to Serengeti, Tanzania at the end of the year in October, and November, and from Serengeti to Maasai Mara in July and August.

Even though I haven’t seen this migration, I know it is an amazing experience where millions of wildebeests and thousands of zebras cross the river to search for grass and water.

For more sensitive people this could be a little bit heartbreaking as the hungry predators are waiting to catch the weakest from the group. Only the strong ones survive this migration. However, this is the cycle of nature.

3. Maasai Culture

Maybe you know, but for those who don’t, Maasais are people belonging to a tribe living in Kenya and Tanzania.

Some of them live in rural areas living their way of life in huts made of mud and elephants’ excrements. They make fire with a stick, use natural medicine, drink blood from goats or cows, and speak their language.

Maasais in Maasai Village, Kenya

However, these days many of them live more civilized lives and speak English and Swahili, which are the main languages in Kenya. You can recognize Maasais based on their clothes.

When you are in Kenya, you can visit a Maasai Village where they will show you around, explain everything about their lives, what natural medicines they have and what are they good for, and show you how they make fire.

They also perform their traditional dance with singing and you can join them. Another amazing experience for which Kenya is worth visiting.

However, the Maasais are not the only tribe living in Kenya. There are more tribes with their habits, clothes, and traditions that you can get to know.

4. Breathtaking Landscape

If you think that Kenya is dry land, you are wrong. Kenya has a wide range of landscapes.  From the snow-capped peaks of Mount Kenya through the idyllic beaches of the Kenyan coast to the Great Rift Valley, with its lakes and volcanoes, the country with endless opportunities.

Whether you are coming for a beach holiday, climbing mountains, watching flamingos on the lake, or just simply admiring the wildlife and nature, you can all find it in Kenya.

Watamu Beach in Kenya

Mount Kenya is the highest peak in Kenya and the second highest in Africa after Kilimanjaro. Lake Turkana is the world’s largest desert lake and in the Great Rift Valley, you can find Menengai Crater, a volcano that was formed like 200 000 years ago.

There are many stunning beaches with crystal clear water and white soft sand and the most beautiful beach not only in Kenya but in Africa is Diani Beach.

5. Unique Wildlife

Kenya together with Tanzania and South Africa are countries with the best safaris due to the unique wildlife. I can’t disagree on this.

Zebras, elephants, giraffes, hyenas, wild dogs, wild pigs, lions, buffalos, wildebeest, hippos, cheetahs, antelopes, monkeys, rhinos, leopards, crocodiles, all of these can be seen in Kenya.

Cheetahs on Kenya Safari

However, there are 5 most important animals that everybody wants to see so they can say they saw The Big 5. The animals belonging to the Big 5 are lion, elephant, leopard, rhino, and buffalo.

Let me not forget about the 1,000 bird species living in Kenya. It is a haven for bird enthusiasts.

6. Adventure Activities

What adventure activities can be done in Kenya? Safari is considered as one of the adventure activities. However not only safari, but you can also go diving and explore the beauty of the ocean.

If you prefer to fly like a bird, you can go on a hot air balloon trip. Other adventure activities are climbing Mount Kenya, taking a small boat tour to see the wildlife, and walking or cycling in Hell’s Gate National Park.

7. Conservation efforts

Kenya is one of the countries supporting wildlife conservation. Many projects are fighting poaching and illegal activities, they do lion monitoring, land conservancies, supporting eco-tourism, and working hard to protect endangered species.

8. Delicious cuisine

Not a very well-known fact, but Kenya has many unique dishes and they vary throughout the country. The national food of Kenya that every Kenyan family eats is Ugali.

Ugali is made of corn flour or maize and cooked in water or milk until it gets a dough consistency.  You can eat Ugali with beef stew for example, which is another favorite dish.

Grilled seafood and meat in Kenya

Kenyans love to eat meat, so they grill beef meat or goat but also fish, which are delicious. They also prepare Chapati, which is soft flatbread.

Another meal is Samosa, which in some Middle Eastern countries is called Sambosa, and it is pastries triangles filled with minced beef, peace, or potatoes.

They also have different dishes with fried rice or rice cooked with coconut milk, fried spiced potatoes, plantain bananas, and many more.

9. Historical Sites

Kenya has several historical sites like ancient Swahili ruins called Gedi Ruins in the coastal town of Malindi.

Gedi Ruins in Malindi, Kenya

When you stay on the coast, in Mombasa you can take pictures of Fort Jesus, which was built by the Portuguese between 1593 and 1596 and is under the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Another place in Kenya that is under the Unesco World Heritage Sites is Lamu Old Town located north of Mombasa.

10. Friendly People

Kenyan people are not only very friendly, smiley, and kind, but they will welcome you in their country with open arms.

They say hello to you when they meet you on the street, they like to engage in conversation and are willing to help when you need it. The children will run calling you Muzungu, which means white person.

You see that many people don’t have much from the materialistic world, but they have big smiles and hearts.

Is Kenya Worth Visiting: FAQs

Here you have it. The proof that Kenya is worth visiting and should be on every traveler’s bucket list. For more questions, check these FAQs below.

Is Kenya safe to visit?

This is a question that many people ask. Even I had concerns before I went there. Well, it is safe but you have to take some precautions and behave differently than in Europe for example.

First of all, you should have the necessary vaccinations which are tetanus, hepatitis A and B, and yellow fever. Bring with you strong mosquito repellent and if you wish tablets against malaria. These are mostly needed in rural areas and on safaris. Also, it is important to sleep under mosquito nets.

When you are on safari, listen to all instructions from your guide and don’t get out of the car.

While staying in your hotel, don’t go out at night. It is not safe for tourists. If you have local friends, then you can go with them, otherwise stay in your hotel or resort area. Other than that, I believe Kenya is safe to visit. Of course, always check the travel advisory before you travel.

When is the best time to visit Kenya?

If you want to see the Big Migration, then you should come from July through October. Other than that, the best months to visit are January and February during the dry season as the game viewing is amazing.

Are Kenya safaris worth it?

Kenya safaris are more than worth it. It is an exceptional experience that will bring lifetime memories. The nature, wildlife, and amazing lodges where you stay will create heartwarming moments and you will want to come back again.

Conclusion: Is Kenya A Good Place To Visit?

Kenya’s safari adventure, different cultures and tribes, breathtaking landscape, unique wildlife, historical sites, beautiful beaches, delicious cuisine, and kind and friendly people are all the reasons why Kenya is worth visiting.

There is a saying: “When you go to Africa for the first time, you will either love it or hate it.” I believe that if you go to Kenya, you will love it.

Why Travel to Kenya

why should you visit kenya

Conservation is central to Kenya’s tourism industry and is of great importance throughout the country, and the work of communities and old families with historic ties to the land ensures the continuity and success of Africa’s animals. From the rhino breeding programs in Lewa to the elephant research at the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage and predator programs, there is a groundswell of support for the precious resources of this fascinating country.

Why Travel to Kenya, Part of the wonder of traveling is to see how others live without getting the (often) cheesy, touristy front, and in this Kenya excels. If you do it properly, Kenya offers travelers the opportunity to get a true sense of the country and its people, and opportunities to interact with locals who are eager to meet and converse with travelers are truly unique in the safari world.

Although Kenya is perhaps best known for views of the wildebeest migration that travels into the Maasai Mara between July and August, you can visit Kenya at almost any time of year. If any time should be avoided it is the long rains between Mid-March and late May.

With Nairobi as a major African hub, it is easy to combine Kenya with Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, Zanzibar, Northern Mozambique, Seychelles and Ethiopia. Combining Kenya with Southern Africa requires a bit more complexity and travel time but can be done.

Why Travel to Kenya

Secrets and Tips

  • Combine the Maasai Mara with an area with lots of activities like Laikipia.
  • Adopt an elephant and get special afternoon access to the Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphange to interact with the babies.
  • October and Mid-January through March are both great times to be in Kenya with good game and fewer crowds.
  • Meru National Park has excellent game-viewing and birding.

Good To Know

Kenya offers incredible safaris and game-viewing, as well as the most unique family-owned properties. Kenya is the perfect destination for active travelers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who would like kenya.

Culturally, Kenya offers some of the most interesting and authentic experiences that can be had on safari, with numerous opportunities to interact with and learn from members of Kenya’s 40+ tribes, including the semi-pastoral groups such as the Maasai and Samburu. While canned cultural experiences do exist, we value working with properties that offer clients continuous opportunities for simple authentic interactions like casual conversations with the staff and guides at your camp or a visit to the local village to see the schools, workshops and projects that many properties support. When done right, Kenya offers you the chance to immerse yourself in another culture, without feeling as though you are being humored, and return home with a true sense of the country.

This friendly nation welcomes visitors, and its people are always happy to discuss their traditions and culture with new friends. In short, Kenya’s got soul, that elusive aspect that makes a visit so memorable.

Kenya’s Game Reserves and National Parks

Thanks to its more than its 50 national parks and game reserves, Kenya is home to a vast diversity of wildlife. The following are among the world’s most visited game reserves and national parks:

  • National Park of Maasai Mara
  • The Amboseli Game Reserve
  • The National Park of Tsavo
  • The Park of Lake Nakuru
  • Park of Aberdare
  • Protected Area of Samburu, Kenya

Visitors can tailor their itineraries to their interests by picking and choosing from the various parks and reserves, each of which offers something special.

Safaris and Animals in Kenya

The country’s diverse animal population is a big selling point for the country. The “Big Five” animals—lions, leopards, elephants, and rhinoceroses—can all be seen by tourists, along with giraffes, zebras, cheetahs, hyenas, and wildebeests.

The greatest way to see Kenya’s wildlife is on a safari, and there are many different kinds to select from. The most common kind of safari is a “game drive,” during which tourists ride along in specially equipped vehicles through the park or reserve in search of wildlife.

Some parks and reserves even provide walking safaris, where guests can go on foot tours of the park alongside an expert ranger. You can also go on a safari in a hot air balloon for a bird’s-eye view of the park and its inhabitants.

Safaris in Kenya: A Cultural Detour

Over forty distinct ethnic groups call Kenya home, each with its own history and traditions. Travelers interested in learning more about Kenya’s rich cultural heritage can do so by visiting cultural villages and participating in cultural events.

The Kit Mikayi rock formations are considered a sacred spot by the Luo people, while the Gede Ruins are the remains of a Swahili village from the 13th century.

Vacationing on Kenya’s Beaches

Some of the world’s most stunning beaches may be found along Kenya’s 480-kilometer coastline. Beachgoers can unwind in the sand and sun or try their hand at water sports like snorkelling or scuba diving.

Here are just a few of Kenya’s most well-known shores:

  • Beach of Diani
  • Beach of Watamu
  • Coast of Nyali
  • This is Bamburi Beach.
  • Beach at Malindi

Marine parks, such as the Kisite-Mpunguti Marine National Park, can be visited by boat, and are home to more than 200 different species of fish and dolphins.

The Best of Kenyan Adventure Travel

Kenya is a great destination for thrill-seekers because of the variety of extreme sports available. Hiking, mountain climbing, bungee jumping, and white water rafting are just few of the many outdoor pursuits available to tourists.

Hiking and mountaineering opportunities abound atop Mount Kenya, Africa’s second-highest peak. There are many ways up the mountain, and they all have their own special problems.

White water rafting is a popular tourist activity on Kenya’s longest river, the Tana. The river’s rapids vary in difficulty from grade 2 to 5, making it a good choice for both novice and seasoned rafters.

Ecologically Sound Vacations in Kenya

Kenya’s tourism sector relies heavily on eco-friendly practice’s. Many government-run projects and programmes in the country encourage ecotourism and environmental protection.

The Maasai Mara-Serengeti Ecosystem is a transboundary conservation area that spans both Kenya and Tanzania and is widely regarded as one of the most effective conservation efforts in the world. The project’s overarching goal is to encourage eco-friendly travel to the region while also protecting its natural resources.

Eco-Tourism Kenya encourages businesses in the tourism industry to adopt sustainable practice’s, and the Kenya Wildlife Service oversees the country’s national parks and game reserves.

Tourism Peak Season in Kenya

When you should travel to Kenya for a vacation depends on what you hope to get out of your trip. March through May and again in October through December are the wettest months in the country.  Safaris are most enjoyable from June through October, the dry season. Wildlife is easy to spot at this time of year since they congregate around water.

Between the months of December through March, the weather along the shore is hot and dry, making it an ideal time to travel there. The seaside is pleasant to visit in July and August as well, when temperatures are milder and humidity is lower.

Organising a Vacation to Kenya

Tourists visiting Kenya should give serious thought to a number of details before setting off on their journey.

To visit Kenya, tourists need a passport, a visa, and, if they haven’t already had one, a yellow fever vaccination certificate. You should also learn about the resorts, campers, and motels that will suit your needs.

It’s crucial to think about the type of safari you want to go on, the location of the park or reserve you want to go to, and how long you want your safari to be. Travelers should also do their homework before selecting a tour company to ensure they have a reliable and knowledgeable guide.

Advice for Travelers’  Security in Kenya

Even though Kenya is a relatively risk-free destination for tourists, you should still exercise common sense and take measures to protect yourself. Avoid going out at night, especially in populated locations, and never flash your cash or other valuables.

Safari-goers should listen to their guides and stay a safe distance from the animals at all times. Crocodiles and hippos may be present in the water, thus tourists should stay out of the water.

All in all, Kenya is a fantastic vacation spot since it offers a wide variety of activities and attractions. Visitors can expect to have a pleasant and safe time in the country if they prepare ahead of time and keep in mind some basic safety measures. I think everyone should travel to Kenya and experience the country’s rich culture and natural wonders firsthand.

10 Most Beautiful & Interesting Places To Visit in Kenya

Heather Richardson is an award-winning travel writer, based in South Africa. She is interested in conservation stories, emerging destinations and adventure travel.

A country of great diversity, both physically and culturally, Kenya is one of Africa’s most popular destinations for very good reason. With blissful Indian Ocean beaches, craggy mountains, lush forests and wildlife-rich savannahs, there are endless beautiful places to visit in Kenya.

2,171 Kenya Tours

1. Masai Mara

Masai Mara National Reserve

Masai Mara National Reserve is one of the most famous safari destinations on the continent, but you can escape the crowds by heading to a private concession or conservancy on the edge of the reserve. Aside from not being accessible to day-trippers or those not staying in one of the conservancies’ lodges or tented camps, the conservancies have the advantage of allowing activities not permitted in the national reserve: bush walks and night drives, for example. The Masai Mara is one of the best places in Africa for big cat sightings: lions, leopards and cheetahs are all relatively easy to spot. Then of course, there’s the big-ticket draw: the year-round migration that sees nearly two million wildebeest, plus half a million antelopes and thousands of zebras, following the rains around Tanzania and Kenya. The most anticipated part of this journey is the dramatic Mara River crossings that occur between July or August and October as the animals enter Kenya.

Masai Mara Tours

2. Lake Nakuru

Lake Nakuru National Park

Lake Nakuru National Park is home to a vast number of bird species, most notably flocks of flamingos – they have been known to number in their millions, though the lake has seen a decrease in recent times. Lake Nakuru is one of the Rift Valley lakes, and the birds are attracted to the high levels of algae in the water. Pelicans, cormorants, African fish eagles, Verreaux’s eagles, Goliath herons and hammerkops are also seen around the lake. In addition, you can spot black and white rhinos, Rothschild’s giraffes and lions throughout the national park.

3. Diani Beach

Diani Beach

Easily amongst the most picturesque shores in Africa, Diani Beach is about 30km/20mi south of Mombasa and a short flight from Nairobi. Its white sands are lapped by the brilliant Indian Ocean and backed by verdant forests, into which you can take nature walks when you tire of sunbathing or kite-surfing. Head out for a snorkeling tour, swim with whale sharks, enjoy a sunset dhow cruise – or simply kick back in a hammock with a good book.

4. Amboseli

Amboseli National Park

For iconic views, look no further than Amboseli National Park, close to the Tanzanian border and south-east of the Mara. With the mighty, snowcapped Mt Kilimanjaro, the world’s highest free-standing mountain, rising above the park from across the border, the dramatic scenery is partly why it’s one of the most beautiful places to visit in Kenya. Another reason is its healthy elephant population, many with giant tusks. Then there are the park’s lions, cheetahs, hyenas, buffalo, giraffes, pelicans, martial eagles, blue-cheeked bee-eaters – and much more.

Amboseli Tours

5. Mt Kenya

Mount Kenya

At 5,199m/17,057ft high, the largest mountain in Kenya is also the second highest in Africa after Kilimanjaro across the border in Tanzania. The stratovolcano was created around three million years ago when the East African Rift (part of the Great Rift Valley) opened up. Today its lower slopes are covered in forests of bamboo and African rosewood trees and the mountain runoff provides water for over two million people. With its rugged snowy peaks and glaciers along the upper slopes, Mt Kenya is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Kenya. Travelers hoping to summit can either hike to Point Lenana, one of the three peaks, taking the world’s highest via ferrata (iron way) route, or climb to the highest point, Batian Peak, though this requires experience of technical climbing.

Mt Kenya Tours

Samburu National Park

In northern Kenya, Samburu National Reserve is considered one of the best safari destinations in the country. This region is also home to the Samburu people, famed for their many strands of brightly colored beaded jewelry. Within the reserve you’ll find elephants, lions, leopards and cheetahs, plus over 450 species of birds. You might also spot rare sub-species such as the Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe and East African oryx, as well as the gerenuk (a long-necked antelope) and spotted hyena.

7. Ol Pejeta

A Big Five (lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino) conservancy in the foothills of Mt Kenya, Ol Pejeta Conservancy is known for its conservation initiatives. It was where the last male northern white rhino, Sudan, died in 2018; the last females of the sub-species still live at Ol Pejeta, protected around the clock. The Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary is in the Laikipia conservancy, too, providing a home for chimps rescued from the black market. One of the most interesting places to visit in Kenya, Ol Pejeta is a great destination to learn about the relationship between people and wildlife and the challenges faced in the conservation industry. Come for the day or enjoy a longer stay for lion tracking, bush walks and night drives.

8. The Aberdares

Aberdare National Park

In the cool highlands along the Great Rift Valley, Aberdare National Park is one of the most interesting places to visit in Kenya. Not only is it a lush mountainous region of valleys, rivers, waterfalls and forests, it is also home to extremely rare animals such as the black serval, the black leopard and the eastern bongo, the country’s most elusive antelope. This is the place where Elizabeth II heard of her father’s death, making her Queen of England; Treetops Hotel, where she was staying at the time, has since become a popular place for travelers to visit.

Aberdare Tours

9. Lamu Town

Lamu town

Kenya is not only noted for its safari reserves and savannah but also for its Indian Ocean coastline. The Lamu archipelago is amongst the most interesting places to visit in Kenya as an area brimming with history. Lamu town was founded around 1370 as a Swahili port that has since been inhabited by Europeans, Indians and Persians. As such, it’s a melting pot of multicultural influences. There are 23 mosques, a 19th-century fort and traditional dhow boats bobbing offshore. Then of course there are the surrounding peaceful and unspoilt beaches. The perfect place to unwind after a Kenyan safari tour.

10. Chyulu Hills

Chyulu Hills National Park

In southeastern Kenya, Chyulu Hills is a mountain range that extends for 1,000km/620mi, peaking at 2,188m/7,178ft above sea level. They’re some of the world’s youngest volcanic mountains, at just 500 years old, and where you can find the Leviathan Cave, one of the world’s longest lava tubes. In the scenic Chyulu Hills National Park , you might spot eland, klipspringer, giraffe and zebra, amongst other wildlife. Aside from wildlife-viewing safari drives, you can head out hiking, rock climbing and horseback riding. The lush hills and big skies make this one of the most beautiful places to visit in Kenya, especially in the Maasai conservancies and group ranches on the western slopes, outside the park.

Many Kenyans support their families by working in the hospitality business. Tourists also help small businesses and artists by visiting rural villages and buying local crafts.

Engaging with local communities on your journey allows for genuine cultural exchange. Respecting traditions and customs and participating in community-led projects like volunteering or homestays allows travelers to learn about diverse cultures and develop cultural understanding.

Urban security is also being improved in Nairobi and Mombasa. Police patrol tourist destinations, reassuring visitors to these dynamic cities. Kenya is like any other destination—take measures. Be careful, safeguard valuables, and avoid nighttime walking in unknown locations. Travel advisories from your native nation should also be checked before your journey.

Being aware and cautious can ensure a safe and memorable vacation to Kenya’s diverse landscapes and vibrant culture.

Tips for Traveling to Kenya

  • Prepare and research. Before visiting Kenya , plan beforehand and research the nation. Discover the best time to visit, visa restrictions, local customs, and top attractions.
  • Kenya has a diverse climate, so pack accordingly. Light clothing for warm days, but thicker layers for cooler evenings or Mount Kenya. Bring sunscreen, insect repellent, sturdy shoes, and a hat.
  • During your trip to Kenya, stay hydrated because the African sun can be fierce. Always carry a reusable water bottle and drink lots.
  • Respect animals and nature: Follow park guidelines about animal interactions and conservation when visiting Kenyan national parks and wildlife reserves. Avoid littering and environmental damage.
  • Celebrate cultural diversity: Kenya has over 40 ethnic groups with their own customs and traditions. Dress modestly (particularly while visiting religious sites), ask permission before snapping photos, and show curiosity in learning about local culture.
  • Use reputable tour operators and guides: If you’re going on safari or exploring remote Kenyan areas that may require local guidance, choose tour operators and guides who prioritize safety and nature conservation.

8. While eating different meals is part of traveling, be wary of street food in Kenya. Cook food thoroughly and serve it hot to avoid foodborne infections.

  • Kenya is conservative and, therefore respects local customs and traditions. Public expressions of affection may be frowned upon, especially in rural places. If you’re confused about customs, ask locals or your tour guide for help.

Kenya has many outdoor activities for adventurers. Every thrill-seeker can climb Mount Kilimanjaro or dive into Diani Beach’s beautiful seas. Kenya’s travel is affordable too. All travelers can explore this gorgeous nation with reasonable lodging and transportation.

When is the best time to visit Kenya?

With about half the country on either side of the equator, Kenya ’s climate isn’t a straightforward split of dry and wet seasons. In fact, its dry season has a short wet season, and its wet season is interrupted by a dry one – clear as mud, right?

What this means practically is there’s not exactly a single best time to visit Kenya. There is somewhere ideal to visit at any time of year, but for the Great Migration, bird migration or quality diving, you’ll need to pick specific months.

For climbers, the dry season is prime time for safety and visibility. Temperatures are generally consistent across Kenya, with the coast hotter – but humidity can vary. It can get cold in the mountains, and Kenya’s highest peak, Mt Kenya , is always covered in snow.

This East African nation counts more than 42 Indigenous communities in its population of nearly 54 million people, and many festivals and events explore this diversity – from the Lamu Cultural Festival celebrating the archipelago’s Swahili heritage and the exuberant Mombasa Carnival to the diverse gathering that is the Lake Turkana Festival.

Wildebeests grazing the Savannah during the annual migration in Kenya

July to October and January to February are the best times to see the Great Migration

If the wildebeest migration is on your must-see list, head to the Masai Mara from July onward to observe one of nature’s greatest sights – thousands of wildebeest, zebras and giraffes making the move across the Serengeti.

These high-season months are an enjoyable time to visit any of Kenya’s parks because the grass is thin, there’s little rainfall and sightings are easier as animals congregate around waterholes; they're also climber-friendly because of good visibility and lack of rain. July is also a good time to spot huge flocks of pink flamingos at Lake Nakuru .

Much like July, August is one of the best all-around months to visit Kenya, but it’s a busy time. The Great Migration is well and truly underway, and wildebeest are filling the plains of the Masai Mara. If you’re not in the Mara, August is an excellent time to visit other national parks and conservancies around Kenya .

You can also visit Nairobi without the humid stickiness that makes urban exploring harder work. The capital’s food scene is popping, and Nairobi Restaurant Week is a chance to get your fill. For a hyper-local experience in Samburu County in northern Kenya, the one-day Maralal Camel Derby is a colorful display of camels, costumes and culture.

September offers the best of July and August in terms of weather and wildlife but with slightly fewer crowds, especially in the latter part of the month. You can still catch the migration as hot, dry weather sets in, and there’s almost no chance of rain. It's also when the East African Community Arts Festival JAMAFEST takes place. It’s every two years and rotates between East African nations.

Nairobi hosts the Tusker Safari Sevens in October, an annual Rugby Sevens tournament open to international teams, creating a buzz in the city. October 20 is Mashujaa Day, also known as Heroes Day, honoring those involved in Kenya’s independence movement. It’s a public holiday, and Nairobi and coastal areas are buzzing as Kenyans head to the beaches and parks.

Hot and dry, the high season beckons as the new year begins. January is a popular and busy time for everything: safari, hiking, city exploring, diving, snorkeling and beach stays. Dry season is particularly good (and safe) for climbing Mt Kenya and other peaks and for hiking in places such as Hell’s Gate National Park .

You can usually benefit from low season prices at Masai Mara because the big migration is over, and migratory birds fly into the Mara instead. Celebrate the dawn of a new year on a Mombasa beach ; the city hosts major celebrations.

February sees both the high and dry seasons in Kenya. The lack of rain makes it a popular choice for safari, with minimal muddy terrain and plenty of wildlife to see. It’s also a top time for climbing and hiking , although as it's peak season, crowds and prices can both increase.

Gorgonia coral with small fish and a scuba diver in Mombasa, Kenya

November, December and March are the best times for lush landscapes and underwater adventures

November is a fun month for festival lovers, with both Mombasa Carnival and Lamu Cultural Festival celebrating the rich heritage of Kenya’s ethnic groups and communities.

Floats, music and dance epitomize Mombasa’s street party while on the archipelago of Lamu off the northern coast, Lamu Cultural Festival includes traditional dancing called ngoma and centuries-old skills such as dhow (sailboat) building, donkey racing, fish-trap making and dhow regattas.

For Kenya’s South Asian population, Diwali/New Year celebrations take place (sometimes in October), so the temples are buzzing, decorations are up and there’s an above-average production of Indian mithai (sweets). Weather is mixed with sun and rain, but November remains a good bet for safari.

If you like your landscapes lush and abundant, December in Kenya is magical. The rains tend to stop around the middle of the month, and Kenya’s parks take on a gorgeous green hue ahead of the upcoming second “high season” of January and February. Water visibility is optimal during the shoulder season too, so this is a great time for divers and snorkelers.

December 12 marks Jamhuri Day. Jamhuri means republic in Swahili, and this day is when Kenya marks its 1963 independence from Britain and its constitution as a republic a year later, with cultural events, dances and music.

The two-day Rusinga Cultural Festival on Lake Victoria celebrates the threatened culture of the Abasuba people, while the Beneath the Baobabs Festival in Kilifi is one of the country’s best music festivals, with East African and international performers, giant art and cool costumes.

It's getting hotter and more humid as the rainy season beckons, but March remains a particularly enjoyable time to be in Kenya. Prices can be in the traveler’s favor , and often the rains arrive later in the month, so you should be fine in the earlier half.

Diving and snorkeling are rewarding in March, with clear water and good visibility, and beach parties are especially welcome on these balmy evenings as the hot, dry season begins to give way to the rains. Muslim Kenyans observe the holy month of Ramadan, while for walkers, climbers and outdoors types, the Mount Kenya Festival is a celebration of the country’s highest peak.

Tea plantations on rolling green hills Kenya

April to June is the best time for smaller crowds and lower prices

The “long rains” hit in April and May, and sometimes in March too. While the rainy season can be off-putting for some travelers, this time of year can be incredibly rewarding, and the Mara remains accessible in March. Crowds thin out, and you can enjoy the quietness and solitude of nature.

Some safari lodges and camps close during this time because constant rain can hamper visibility in some parks, and the humidity can be uncomfortable. It’s still a great time to be by the coast, but heavy rains can reduce visibility for divers and snorkelers.

But don't dismiss May for safari or wildlife viewings! Yes, the grasses are longer, and sightings are trickier, but the light and colors can be extraordinary for photography. Samburu National Reserve in northern Kenya is a good choice as wildlife gathers on the riverbanks of the Ewaso Ngiro River.

June is a wonderful time to experience Kenya’s highlands, and with low humidity, walking and climbing become a little easier. This shoulder-season month is a lovely time for wildlife viewing, especially in northern Kenya after the long rains, and it’s also the start of the migration. The coast is mostly dry, and prices are a little lower before the high season kicks off in July.

Parades, singing and dancing take place on Madaraka Day on June 1 – the anniversary of Kenya’s move to self rule. The visually spectacular Lake Turkana Festival in the Rift Valley brings together different ethnic groups in the region, to both celebrate their diverse cultures and promote peace.

If you’re into off-road racing or want to watch, the Rhino Charge , a 4x4 race that raises funds to conserve mountain ecosystems, is quite a spectacle.

Five Reasons Why You Should Visit Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve

Diane Du Plessis

Author: Diane Du Plessis - 24 February 2017

Last Update: 30 January 2024

Part of the Kenya Safari Holidays & Kenya Tours & African Safari Collection

One of the most popular safari destinations on the planet, Masai Mara National Reserve   in Kenya provides travellers with an authentic African holiday experience.

To find out just why it’s so popular, we’ve done our research to convince you to add a Masai Mara safari to your travel wish list.

Abundance of wildlife

The Masai Mara is home to Africa’s famous Big Five species, as well as an abundance of other wildlife, including wildebeest, zebra, gazelle, antelope, ostrich, giraffe, cheetah, hyena and many more.

The great wildebeest migration

The Masai Mara also hosts the annual Great Migration of wildebeest between the months of July-October, as the herds will make their way from Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park, crossing the Nile crocodile-infested Mara river which forms an international border between Kenya and Tanzania, in search of better water and grass resources.

Wildebeest herd crossing the Mara River into Masai Mara, Kenya.

Often described as nature’s greatest spectacles, the great migration is one of Africa’s most dramatic survival stories. To stay up to date on the whereabouts of the herds, here’s a great wildebeest migration tracking map .

Excellent birding opportunities

Apart from its abundance of wildlife in the Masai Mara , birding enthusiasts are treated when visiting to a huge variety of birflife.

Vultures in Masai Mara, Kenya.

It’s estimated that there are over 570 recorded species of birds in the reserve, which includes species such as the Red-Winged Schalow’s Turaco, White-Tipped Crest, Ross Turaco, Orange Buff Pel’s Fishing Owl, Wary Guinea Fowl and the roaming Secretary bird.

It’s well maintained

The Masai Mara National is the most well maintained Kenyan wildlife reserve and accommodates travellers with modest to more high end budgets. If you’re looking for an authentic African safari, then the Mara should be destination of choice.

When is Eid al-Fitr 2024 and how is it celebrated?

The three-day festival celebrates the completion of the fasting month of Ramadan by Muslims across the world.

Interactive_Eid_2024_outside image

As a new moon was not sighted on Monday evening after Maghrib prayers, Muslims in Saudi Arabia and neighbouring countries will fast one more day, completing 30 days of Ramadan. The first day of Eid will then be celebrated on Wednesday, April 10.

The first day of Eid al-Fitr is determined by the sighting of the crescent moon marking the start of the month of Shawwal, the 10th month of the Islamic (Hijri) calendar.

Lunar months last between 29 and 30 days so Muslims usually have to wait until the night before Eid to verify its date.

Other countries follow independent sightings.

When the sighting has been verified, Eid is declared on television, radio stations and at mosques.

How do Muslims celebrate Eid?

Traditionally, Eid is celebrated for three days as an official holiday in Muslim-majority countries. However, the number of holiday days varies by country.

Muslims begin Eid day celebrations by partaking in a prayer service that takes place shortly after dawn, followed by a short sermon.

On their way to the prayer, which is traditionally held in an open area, Muslims recite takbeerat, praising God by saying “Allahu Akbar”, meaning “God is great”.

It is customary to eat something sweet before the prayer, such as date -filled biscuits known as maamoul in the Middle East. This particular festival is known as the “sweet” Eid – and the distribution of sweets is common across the Muslim world.

Muslims usually spend the day visiting relatives and neighbours and accepting sweets as they move around from house to house.

Each country has traditional desserts and sweets that are prepared before Eid or on the morning of the first day.

Girls and women in many countries decorate their hands with henna. The celebration for Eid begins the night before as women gather in neighbourhoods and large family gatherings for the application of henna.

In some countries, families visit graveyards to offer their respects to departed family members right after the morning prayers.

It is common for Muslim-majority countries to decorate their cities with lights and hold festivities to commemorate the end of the fasting month.

Eid amid the onslaught in Gaza

For some 2.3 million Palestinians in Gaza this Eid, this will be the first Muslim religious holiday after more than 33,000 people have been killed in Israeli attacks. With little food aid, and very limited water, Gaza’s Eid al-Fitr will be mired in destruction amid the continuing attacks.

What are common Eid greetings?
