Kendra Wilkinson Defends Getting High at a Sublime Concert the Day Hugh Hefner Died: 'I Owe Him Nothing' (Exclusive)
In a revealing new interview with PEOPLE, Wilkinson emphasizes it was never her responsibility to protect Hugh Hefner
When Playboy founder Hugh Hefner died in September 2017 at age 91, Kendra Wilkinson wasn't sitting at home mourning.
Hours after the news broke, Wilkinson says she was getting high at a Sublime concert in California.
“I smoked a lot of weed,” recalls Wilkinson, 38, exclusively in a new interview with PEOPLE. Although it’s been 20 years since she first rose to fame at age 18 as one of Hefner’s girlfriends, the reality star says she is only beginning to unpack the trauma from her time living in his Playboy world.
“Look, at the end of the day, I owe Hef nothing,” she says. “I’m not going to sit here and protect him. Hugh Hefner decided to date millions of girls, right? That's not my responsibility. And whatever happened with him, with his relationships, that was his thing. It’s not my responsibility to protect a man for his life choices.”
Now two decades after she and Hefner first began dating, Wilkinson — who is currently in therapy — has more perspective. “I got into deep regret [afterwards]. I got to that point where I started hating myself [and asking], ‘Why did I have sex with Hugh Hefner?’” she says of Hefner, who was 60 years her senior. “I hated my boobs, my body, my face. I got to that point where I started hating myself.”
After Wilkinson left the mansion, she wed former NFL player Hank Baskett , 41, at her onetime residence in June 2009, walking down the aisle while pregnant with Hank Jr ., now 14, who was born that December. (She and Baskett — who finalized their divorce in 2019 — later welcomed daughter Alijah Mary, 9, in 2014.)
In September, Wilkinson was hospitalized and diagnosed with anxiety and depression and placed on antipsychotic medication. “It’s not easy to look back at my 20s. I’ve had to face my demons,” says Wilkinson. Now, she acknowledges that Playboy “messed up her whole life.”
“Do you know how many people were putting pressure on me to stick up for Hef with all his allegations and all this stuff? That’s not my responsibility to stick up for someone like that,” she says. “That’s what started triggering me because people were like, ‘Well, why don’t you stick up for him?’ And I had a marriage to my ex-husband and now two kids to focus on now, not Hugh Hefner.”
Although Wilkinson is finally ready to talk about her experiences, she says that she’d also like to move on as she continues pursuing her real estate career . “Hef kept appearing in my life and there were times where I wanted to stop that. I'm, like, ‘Hef's not a part of my life anymore. Can we not include Hef in my life moving forward?’” she says.
“He was five years of my life. He’s not my life," she emphasizes. "So there were times where I kept trying to part ways with Playboy and it just kept following me through time. I had to really face the truth of it all.”
Reflecting on her growth, Wilkinson is proud of how far she’s come from those troubling times. “I have so much good in front of me. I have two of the most amazing kids who are good, solid human beings, and I feel like I just pressed a rebirth,” she says, taking a deep breath. “Whatever that hurricane I was part of is in the far distance now.”

Kendra Wilkinson got high at a Sublime concert hours after Hugh Hefner’s death: ‘I owe him nothing’

Hours after Playboy founder Hugh Hefner’s death in 2017 , former playmate Kendra Wilkinson was getting high at a Sublime concert.
“Look, at the end of the day, I owe Hef nothing,” the 38-year-old told People , adding that she “smoked a lot of weed” at the time.
It is only now, two decades after she became one of Hefner’s girlfriends at the age of 18, that Wilkinson, who was hospitalized and diagnosed with depression and anxiety in September, is addressing her trauma and “demons” as a result of her five-year stint at the mansion.
She admitted that Playboy “messed up her whole life.”
“I got into deep regret [afterwards]. I got to that point where I started hating myself [and asking], ‘Why did I have sex with Hugh Hefner?’” she said.
“I hated my boobs, my body, my face. I got to that point where I started hating myself.”
Her admission comes after a slew of allegations against Hefner have emerged in the years since his passing, revealing the truth about the reality of life as a Playboy Bunny .
Past Playmates Holly Madison and Bridget Marquardt have also been outspoken about life in the mansion — Madison once compared the mansion to a “cult” while Marquardt recalled the bunnies being “fed” to Hefner like “meat.”
Wilkinson said that “people were putting pressure” on her to “stick up for Hef,” but she refused.
“I’m not going to sit here and protect him,” she said. “Hugh Hefner decided to date millions of girls, right? That’s not my responsibility. And whatever happened with him, with his relationships, that was his thing.”
She added “It’s not my responsibility to protect a man for his life choices.”
Instead, the realtor wants to focus on her two “amazing” children — Hank Baskett IV, 14, and Alijah Baskett, 9 — who she shares with her ex-husband Hank Baskett. The pair divorced in 2018 .
“He was five years of my life. He’s not my life,” she said. “So there were times where I kept trying to part ways with Playboy and it just kept following me through time. I had to really face the truth of it all.”
While she’s now opening up about her experiences with Hefner, her ultimate goal is to finally move on, despite her past as a playmate resurfacing. In a way, she said, it’s like a “rebirth.”
“Whatever that hurricane I was part of is in the far distance now,” she said.

Kendra Wilkinson Didn't Mourn Hugh Hefner Because She 'Owes Him Nothing,' Got High at Concert Day He Died
F ormer Girls Next Door star Kendra Wilkinson went to a concert and got high the day her ex-boyfriend Hugh Hefner died — and she’s got absolutely no regrets about not mourning the Playboy founder’s death.
Speaking to People , Wilkinson revealed she attended a Sublime concert in California and “smoked a lot of weed” just hours after Hefner died at the age of 91 on Sept. 27, 2017.
“Look, at the end of the day, I owe Hef nothing. I’m not going to sit here and protect him. Hugh Hefner decided to date millions of girls, right? That’s not my responsibility. And whatever happened with him, with his relationships, that was his thing. It’s not my responsibility to protect a man for his life choices,” she told the magazine.

The former Playboy model was only 18 when she joined the Playboy Mansion as one of Hef’s girlfriends in 2004. At the time, the controversial media mogul was 78 years old; the couple had a whopping 60-year age gap.
Now in therapy 20 years after she first began dating Hefner, Wilkinson is finally unpacking her time spent in the infamous Playboy Mansion alongside her Girls Next Door co-stars Holly Madison and Bridget Marquardt.
“I got into deep regret [afterward]. I got to that point where I started hating myself [and asking], ‘Why did I have sex with Hugh Hefner?’ I hated my boobs, my body, my face. I got to that point where I started hating myself,” Wilkinson admitted to People .

The real estate agent and former reality TV star had to “look back at [her] 20s” and “face [her] demons,” a journey which culminated in the revelation that Playboy “messed up [her] whole life.”
Things became even more difficult for Wilkinson when people began asking her about the many allegations against Hefner over the years, including accusations of sexual assault .
“Do you know how many people were putting pressure on me to stick up for Hef with all his allegations and all this stuff? That’s not my responsibility to stick up for someone like that. That’s what started triggering me because people were like, ‘Well, why don’t you stick up for him?’ And I had a marriage to my ex-husband and now two kids to focus on now, not Hugh Hefner … I’m, like, ‘Hef’s not a part of my life anymore. Can we not include Hef in my life moving forward?’” she explained.
Wilkinson moved out of the Playboy Mansion in 2009 after she met former NFL player Hank Baskett, whom she wed at the mansion just a few months later. Her reality spinoff snow, Kendra , launched the same year on the E! network. The series aired for four seasons through 2011.

Sporting KC releases executive Gavin Wilkinson after 8 days following fan backlash
The Gavin Wilkinson era is over at Sporting Kansas City , an eight-day period that sparked fan backlash like few MLS hires have elicited. On Friday, club principal owner Michael Illig announced that the club had “mutually agreed with Gavin Wilkinson to release him from his recently announced role .”
Wilkinson’s hire was met with criticism by the team’s fan base following his tenure as general manager and president of the Portland Timbers and Thorns. Portland fired Wilkinson near the end of the 2022 season following separate investigations into the organizations’ handling of player or coach misconduct.
Fans expressed their dissent in the week following the news of Sporting Kansas City hiring Wilkinson, rallying behind the social media hashtag #GWOut with several canceling their season tickets.
“In making this difficult decision, we want to first acknowledge the passion of our fans, our community of supporters, our partners and our stakeholders,” Illig’s statement continued. “Together, they comprise our deeply valued Sporting family. Our action today demonstrates our longstanding, unequivocal respect for their voices, and the belief that we are all stronger when we listen to one another.
“We ran a diligent and exhaustive process to identify our new sporting director. It was grounded in the deeply held principles and standards we have adhered to since the day we acquired the team.
“That said, the impassioned response from our fans reinforced to us a fundamental philosophy that has driven us since day one: to honor and protect our valued relationships. It is in that spirit that we take this action today, reflective of our abiding appreciation for our unrivaled SKC fans and our Kansas City community.”
Serving as the Portland clubs’ president of soccer after joining the organization in 2001, Wilkinson had recommended former Thorns coach Paul Riley for a position with the Western New York Flash despite being aware of sexual coercion allegations made by multiple Thorns players. Years later, he and the Timbers organization failed to report a citation issued to winger Andy Polo after police were called to handle a domestic violence incident. Although Wilkinson stayed in that role following an MLS-commissioned investigation, he was later dismissed in the wake of the Sally Yates report .
Wilkinson spoke to Timbers fans as part of a town hall event on April 22, 2022, in the period between the league-commissioned investigation and the findings of the Yates report. After half an hour of fielding on-field questions, he was asked by a fan about “a perception that there’s been a lot of cover-up” by Portland’s hierarchy. Wilkinson’s response centered on his involvement in both the coercion allegations and the failure to report the domestic violence citation.
Contextualizing the Timbers' optics battle in the Andy Polo saga
“Allegations are one thing, and at some stage, for me personally, facts have to matter,” Wilkinson said. “So if we’re gonna take what we believe to be a story and blow it out of proportion and then that’s gonna get momentum — and then social media and an echo chamber — if we’re gonna identify what we think the flaws are rather than listening to the facts, it’s gonna create issues. It’s ruined my experience. It’s ruined my family’s life in Portland. So I sympathize and I’ve lived it.”
After announcing Wilkinson last week, Sporting stated that they worked with sports search firm Nolan Partners to fill the sporting director role. On Thursday morning, The Athletic contacted Nolan Partners for comment on their involvement. A spokesperson for the firm declined to comment after Friday’s news.
The Athletic consulted multiple sources with knowledge of the process that led to Wilkinson’s hiring, speaking anonymously due to the sensitive nature of the situation. According to them, Wilkinson was one of dozens of candidates considered for the position. However, Sporting made the decision to hire Wilkinson based on prior relationships and his experience in the league. He was not among the candidates that were identified and presented by Nolan Partners.
In a news conference after his Sporting KC hire, Wilkinson said there was an “error of judgment” in Portland and “I should have done more.”
“I think I’ve learned I’m not perfect, but I’ve never met a perfect person,” he said. “And you know, with me being in a very public spotlight, obviously, everyone can have an opinion, everyone can pass judgment and I’m just hopeful that fans will look at the facts and I will have plenty of opportunity with town hall and other initiatives to relate to folks and answer questions as well.
“And then it’s up to them to make their mind up.”
The loudest supporter backlash came from the Ladies of SKC, a group of women and men with a stated goal “to grow the game, to build community and to support our SKC family however we can.” Since Wilkinson’s appointment, they’ve been visible in local television news reports and interviews with local written outlets. They had scheduled a protest to take place Saturday at the Sporting KC warehouse sale.
Just before Illig’s statement, the group was interviewed by the independent Kansas City Soccer Journal , where they described Wilkinson’s hiring as “a slap in the face” from a club they’ve done so much to support.
“This hiring has made us decide that we’re gonna get out there and fight the good fight,” Ladies of SKC member Brandy Peed said on the Shades of Blue podcast, “because we don’t think that he should be part of the Sporting community.
“For me, personally, I feel like it’s a slap in the face. This man had many chances to protect the players and he didn’t. Even in his press conference with Sporting, he mentioned that he should’ve done better and he deserves a second chance, but he had many chances to protect these women — and he chose not to, and he continued to do it.”
Sporting Kansas City declined to add further comment beyond Friday’s statement. The club is expected to make a replacement hire to fortify its backroom sporting staff.
An MLS spokesperson declined to comment on the situation between Wilkinson and Sporting Kansas City, as well.

Parklife: Doja Cat, Disclosure and J Hus to headline in Manchester
- Published 1 day ago
Singer Doja Cat, electronic duo Disclosure and Mercury Prize-nominated rapper J Hus have been announced as the headliners for Parklife 2024.
The festival, which takes place in Manchester's Heaton Park on 8 and 9 June, will also see performances from Sugababes, Becky Hill and Anne-Marie.
The DJ line-up will include sets from Peggy Gou, Four Tet and Camelphat.
Organisers said the line-up announcement was the "invitation everyone's been waiting for".
A representative said the annual event, which began in 2010, will also see the unveiling of a new main stage, "jaw-dropping production, less line-up clashes and a fresh new look".
They said the weekender would see several exclusive moments, including Doja Cat's UK festival-headlining debut, Disclosure's only British bill-topping show in 2024 and one of the first shows by J Hus in almost four years.
In December, the festival announced it would be reducing ticket prices by almost £5 in a bid to keep it "accessible to all" .
At the time, they also revealed "trailblazing house superstars" Fisher and Chris Lake would be bringing their "mammoth" Under Construction show to the event's Hanger stage.
Also on the bill in June will be the likes of Digga D, Mahalia, Rudim3ntal, Nia Archives, Barry Can't Swim, Wilkinson, Shy FX: Specials, Kenya Grace, Badger, Girls Don't Sync, Uncle Waffles, Chimpo and Loco Dice.
The festival representative said "early bird tickets" had sold out "in rapid time", but all remaining tickets would be put on general sale on Friday.
"Commanding the festival conversation as the largest city festival in Europe and an agenda-setting date in the diary unlike anything else this summer, Parklife is that invitation everyone's been waiting for," they added.
The 2023 event at Heaton Park saw revellers from all over the UK enjoy two days of live performances, DJ sets and high spirits , which even a storm-induced pause in proceedings could not dampen.
