Has Lee Mack’s Not Going Out been cancelled?

The bbc series is the second longest-running sitcom in the uk.

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Lee Mack has revealed the future of his hit sitcom Not Going Out , giving fans a better understanding of what they can expect from him and his career.

The BBC comedy series first began airing in 2006, with Mack starring as a fictional version of himself opposite Sally Bretton, who portrays Lucy Adams, and Hugh Dennis, who plays his neighbour Toby.

It has enjoyed huge success and has become the UK's second longest-running sitcom behind Last of the Summer Wine, so it's no wonder fans are curious whether there'll be more.

Mack has shared insight into this, telling The Sun that fans of Not Going Out can't expect the series to return until at least early 2025, if it comes back at all.

Sharing his career plans for the future, Mack said: "More 1% Club, more Would I Lie to You? and, for the first year in a long time, I won’t be doing Not Going Out. If we do bring it back, we're looking at early 2025."

The comedian clarified that despite being the show's creator the decision to make the show is no longer his to make, and he simply has to wait —just like fans— to find out if another season has been green lit.

“We’re talking about it now. I’d love to do more, I love doing it, it’s great fun, I love the cast but […] it’s not always my decision, these things," he shared. "I just wait for someone to say, 'There’s a bag of money, get on with it'.”

Now, the good news is Mack's comments suggest that the show has not been cancelled outright, it just simply hasn't been picked up for another season yet. Given his busy schedule, Mack has a lot of other projects on his plate that he has to contend with other than Not Going Out.

Given the show's success over the years it seems entirely possible that it will return, but it won't be for a long time until viewers are able to watch another season. If Mack is correct in thinking that the show won't return until early 2025 then filming might not begin til the end of 2024 or at the start of 2025.

Not Going Out has had 13 seasons so far, and viewers last enjoyed the return of the sitcom for a Christmas special in 2023. In the episode, Lee and Lucy invite a lonely old pensioner to their house for a festive dinner, only for things to start going hilariously wrong.

The Christmas special marked the 100th episode for the series and drew in almost 4 million viewers, so it's not like the show hasn't got the viewership numbers to prove it's worth bringing back. Fans will just have to wait and see, just like Mack.

Not Going Out is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.

Lee Mack to Star in The Return of The Unfriend

Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss’ record breaking collaboration The Unfriend will be making its return to the West End this year. The show will open in previews at Wyndhams’ Theatre on 16 December and will run until 9 March 2024, with a press night on 9 January 2024.

New to the show, award-winning comedian and actor Lee Mack ( Would I Lie To You, Not Going Out , Inside No. 9) will play the role of Peter, whilst Sarah Alexander ( Jonathan Creek , Green Wing, Smack The Pony and Coupling ) will play Peter’s wife Debbie and Nick Sampson ( Witness for the Prosecution , Anthony and Cleopatra ) will play The Neighbour. Frances Barber ( Silk and Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool ) returns to play the role of everyone’s favourite serial killer Elsa Jean Krakowski.

Lee Mack said: “ I’m delighted to be joining The Unfriend with the brilliant Sarah Alexander and the wonderful Frances Barber, and of course all the other amazing cast. It’s such a fantastically written play by Steven Moffat that I might even go the whole hog and learn the words .”

While on holiday Peter and Debbie befriend Elsa: a lusty, Trump-loving widow from Denver, USA. She’s less than woke but kind of wonderful, so they agree to stay in touch – because no one ever really does, do they?

When Elsa invites herself to stay with the family a few months later, they decide to look her up online. But it’s too late: on learning the truth about Elsa Jean Krakowski, the deadly danger is already on a flight to London! What began as a casual holiday friendship is suddenly a threat to all their lives.

Writer, Steven Moffat said: “ It’s a real thrill to welcome a couple of comedy legends on board The Unfriend, for our new run at the Wyndhams Theatre.  Lee Mack is one of the funniest men in the country and someone I’ve been wanting to work with for years. And Sarah Alexander is not just brilliant and hilarious, she’s an old friend from our days together on Coupling . Can’t wait to get started all over again. ”

Steven Moffat is a six-time BAFTA award-winning writer, whose hit television series include Doctor Who , Sherlock and Dracula – the latter two co-written with the actor and writer Mark Gatiss, who directs this production. The Unfriend is designed by Robert Jones, with lighting by Mark Henderson, sound by Ella Wahlström, video design by Andrzej Goulding and casting by Charlotte Sutton CDG. The Unfriend by Steven Moffat was originally developed by Playful Productions.

Lee Mack provides update on the future of Not Going Out

Virgin Radio

12 Dec 2023, 11:31

Lee Mack poses on red carpet, the cast of Not Going Out hold a glittery gold 100

Fans have loved Lee Mack's Not Going Out, and the star has provided an update of what we can expect in future ahead of the 100th episode.

Speaking to virginradio.co.uk and other press, Lee Mack opened up about the popularity of the show in general and some potential plans: "I'm not sure about another 100, but discussions are ongoing now. We will be back with you shortly with some more information in one way or the other, we're talking about that."

He added: "I'd love to do more, I love doing it, it's great fun. I love the cast: most of them are here!"

Lee revealed that even though he loves doing the show, he stressed "it's not always my decision for these things. I just wait for someone to say 'There's a bag of money, get on with it'" he joked.

He also said he feels "protective" about British sitcoms in general.

"It's such a unique thing that I think is worth protecting" he insists, calling them "brilliant."

"I know a lot of people rave about American comedies, but almost all British sitcoms are my personal favourites," Lee insists.

"I grew up on Dad's Army, Rising Damp, The Young Ones, which was unbelievably revolutionary at the time, but that was a studio sitcom," Mack recalls.

"I just think it's important to keep it going. I think it's an importantly almost uniquely British thing. I know the Americans do it, but I think the way we do it is very uniquely British."

He hopes it won't end anytime soon: "I like the idea of trying to keep that going. I'm hoping it keeps going. I'm also very lucky that it's very unfashionable, because no one younger up and coming comic is trying to take my place which is very unfashionable," he jokes.

His role is safe.

Not Going Out's 100th episode will air on Christmas Eve at 10pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

'The Unfriend' to return to the West End with Lee Mack

BAFTA-winner Mark Gatiss wrote this hit comedy production that broke box office records during its run at the Criterion Theatre earlier this year.

Bea Maynard

Mark Gatiss' The Unfriend will return to the West end at the end of the year with BAFTA-winning comedian and actor Lee Mack playing one of the title roles.

This hit comedy will play at Wyndham's Theatre from 16 December for a strictly limited season until 9 March 2024.

Mack ( Would I Lie to You, Not Going Out ), will star as Peter, alongside Sarah Alexander ( Jonathan Creek, Green Wings ), as Peter's wife Debbie, and Witness for the Prosecution star Nick Sampson as The Neighbour. They join Frances Barber ( Silk ), who's reprising her role of Elsa Jean Krakowski.

“I’m delighted to be joining The Unfriend with the brilliant Sarah Alexander and the wonderful Frances Barber, and of course all the other amazing cast. It’s such a fantastically written play by Steven Moffat that I might even go the whole hog and learn the words.” Lee Mack said in a statement.

The Unfriend follows married couple Peter and Debbie, who's wacky American friend Elsa invites herself to stay with them after meeting the pair on holiday. When the husband and wife suddenly realise they know hardly anything about her, they decide to look her up online. They don't like what they find but it's too late. She's already on her way.

Mark Gatiss directs the creative team behind this production that includes Mark Henderson on lighting, Ella Wahlström on sound, and video designer Andrzej Goulding.

Lee Mack interview: stand-up comedy, Not Going Out, Everybody Loves Raymond and more

His stand-up tour won acclaim far and wide earlier this year. And as it arrives on DVD, Lee Mack spares some time to talk about comedy, and the return of Not Going Out…

This might be pulling back the curtain a little, but rarely have we conducted an interview with quite so many technical problems as this one. We only mention this, because throughout the assorted troubles we had with dodgy phones and recording equipment, Lee Mack was a gent. It’s thus, thanks primarily to his patience, that we were able to have the chat that we did. And here’s how it panned out…

It’s probably best to start with the obvious question: how did you go about shaping the show for the DVD release?

Well, we obviously had to do lots of editing. But we toured it, and when it came to the edit, we did have to cut it a bit.

I only ask, because you cut my favourite joke of the tour out! [a joke about R White’s lemonade, of all things] I figured that got the cut because, when I saw it on tour, only around half the audience seemed to get it!

Ad – content continues below

And that didn’t stay in the DVD? I didn’t even know that! If only half the audience got it, I definitely would have kept it in! Do you know what, I probably just forgot to say it on the night we recorded it!

When I came and saw your live gig in Birmingham, you managed to lock a claustrophobic in a box…

Oh, you were there? Fucking hell! The one where the woman kept the lid open?

I had two in the same week. She wouldn’t even let the lid close. It was fucking mental that…!

It struck me, especially when watching the DVD back, that you top and tailed the gig with unpredictable elements…

I have to say, that I don’t top it. Usually they get in the box! The tail, without doubt, is very much a Q&A, peppered with a bit of chat. It’s the bit that I like probably the most. I have to say that it doesn’t always work, but that’s the nature of the night.

Get the best of Den of Geek delivered right to your inbox!

You say on the DVD, when you talk to some people behind the scenes on the tour that you’ve heard Simon Evans’ jokes 90, 91 times [Simon Evans is Lee’s support act]. The Q&A must be your release from doing the same material each night?

Yeah, but I’m always very conscious that you don’t want to outstay your welcome. I’m not a comedian who wants to spend far too long on stage. There are a lot of people going, this is all well and good, but I’ve got a babysitter. So, you can get a bit carried away.

You decided to embark on this tour when Not Going Out was originally cancelled, before that decision was reversed. I read in an interview once that you said every series of Not Going Out takes about a year to produce, and you have to clear the diary to do it…

Yeah, it’s probably nine or ten months. But yeah. I spend a massive proportion of the year doing it. It got better, and each series we’ve managed to get it down to less time.

In hindsight, would you say that the tour eventually came at the wrong time for you? Because looking at the behind the scenes documentary you put on your new DVD, you seem to be leading the opposite life to most stand-ups there. The old cliché of doing the gig, not getting up until after lunch the following day…

Oh yeah. I’ll be honest with you, there’s never a right time for it all. The tour takes a long time. Doing the sitcom – Not Going Out – takes a long time. So to do both at the same time is very hard.

There’s never going to be a good time to do both. I feel that I’m a stand-up comedian more than anything else, that’s my job. But I find the sitcom more of a challenge. That’s the thing I’ve spent most of the last five years doing. So I’m very protective over it.

It’s much harder to have a BBC One sitcom than to have a tour of stand-up. Not harder, but I can do a stand-up tour anytime I want over the next few years. But the sitcom is determined by the BBC and whether they want it.

So to have it on air still, I feel is a real pleasure. I’m very grateful, to do a studio-based sitcom particularly, which is a bit more unfashionable.  It doesn’t come around very often, so if you’ve got it, cling on to it!

It’s a team show, as well, so there’s more than me in it. I feel like I’m part of a group, and we genuinely have a great laugh doing it. So the fact that the tour was booked in, I had to carry on writing the sitcom, there’s no choice.

I’m a big fan of the show …

Thanks, I appreciate that. As I say, it’s very unfashionable. It’s easier to say you don’t like than you like it. If you say you don’t like a studio-based sitcom, it’s a much safer bet. Saying you like dark, edgy, shaky-camera stuff.

It was Victoria Wood who came out a few years ago and said that, after Dinnerladies , there would never be another successful sitcom, and The Royle Family and The Office also redefined television comedy…

Well, it’s funny you should say that. Not only do I remember her saying that, that was on – and it was called The Sitcom Is Dead – the night before we recorded the pilot of Not Going Out . And I remember watching it, thinking this is great news, thank you. David Liddlemount, the head of ITV, was the host.

The last line in the show was Armando Ianucci saying, “we’re saying all this, but who knows, tomorrow, somebody could write a sitcom about a clown, and it could be a big success”!

And we’d put a clown in the pilot!

You’ve spoken in the past about your admiration for something as long-running as Everybody Loves Raymond in the US…

Latest TV reviews

Red eye review: itv thriller starts silly, gets great, star trek: discovery season 5 episode 4 review – face the strange, conan o'brien must go reveals conan's natural habitat is everywhere.

Again, that’s a sitcom that attracted snobbish criticism for some time.

Yeah, of course. Lots of it.

Is that the longevity you’re aiming for with Not Going Out?

I’m on my own when I say this. But I’m one of the few people that think that E verybody Loves Raymond is better than Seinfeld . For me, they’re both brilliant, but if I had to choose one, I would say that Seinfeld … Everybody Loves Raymond , it’s very hard to be extremely on-the-face-of-it broad and mainstream. But actually, getting some quite edgy stuff in. The relationship between Raymond and his dad, and his dad and everyone else in it, was very dark. He’s a very dark character is Frank in Everybody Loves Raymond . And to get that across to a big audience is quite hard.

For me, I’ll rephrase it. Not that it’s better, but if someone said to me that you had to write an episode of Seinfeld , or an episode of Raymond , I would find Seinfeld easier to write. It’s more of a challenge to write Everybody Loves Raymond.

I hear Miranda Hart has dropped out of the next series of Not Going Out?

That’s correct, yeah.

You’ve faced this problem before, of course. Have you sorted a replacement for her?

Of course! I get through quite a lot of women in my show! Catherine Tate was in the pilot!

We’re not bringing new characters in. It’s me, Tim Vine, Katy and Sally. We’ve had quite a lot of guest characters this year. And Bobby Ball crops up as my dad again.

I’m quite pleased. I’m happy we’ve got our team of four together, that will be in it now, fingers crossed, for years to come if we’re recommissioned.

I hope you are.

I hope so too. It’s the thing that I’m most passionate about.

The obvious question, then, is that you left quite a lot of space between the last tour that you did and this one…

A lot of comedians now work on the two year cycle, that you have a year off, trial the new show, then go on tour the year after and put the DVD out.

Yeah. That sounds about right to me.

Are you looking to do that?

I think the nature of sitcom is that the sitcom dictates everything. If the sitcom is recommissioned I will probably concentrate on that for a year, and if not, I will probably go back to the stand-up. I tend to not really make too many plans now.

My only plan right now, quite literally, is that I’m going to have January and February off. And I genuinely don’t think ahead of that. Obviously at some point I’ll do another tour, probably in the next two years maybe. That would be my guess.

Are you continuing with Would I Lie To You as well?

Yeah, we’re doing that in March.

Finally, going back to Not Going Out , you’ve got the fourth series in the can for January?

Have you had any hint of a fifth series?

It’s one of the hardest things about a sitcom, unfortunately, that they’re commissioned from series to series, and are very hard to plan. It gets difficult to do that if you have to do that every year, so I’m hoping that we might have some more concrete commitment. But we’ll have to wait and see.

Do you have any more shows outside of Not Going Out that you’re looking to develop?

I’m talking to Channel Four at the moment about some stuff, and hopefully we’ll get something going. But we’ll have to see what happens!

Lee Mack, thank you very much.

Dark comedy of manners The Unfriend returns to the West End following a box office-busting season earlier this year, with Lee Mack starring as one half of a British couple hosting a potential murderer in their home! This “viciously funny” (The Guardian) play from Sherlock and Doctor Who showrunners Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss is the laugh-out-loud hit you can’t miss at Wyndham’s Theatre .

While on holiday, married couple Peter and Debbie strike up a friendship with loud, brash and Trump-supporting Elsa, and agree to stay in touch. Holiday friends aren’t real friends after all. Sadly, Elsa thinks differently because she is soon inviting herself to stay! Awkwardness turns into horror when Peter and Debbie look her up online and make a horrifying discovery. How will they get rid of her and keep their family safe… without seeming too rude?

Lee Mack stars as Peter alongside Sarah Alexander as Debbie and Frances Barber as Elsa in The Unfriend play. Mack is known for the BBC sitcom Not Going Out and the panel show Would I Lie To You, while Alexander ’s credits include Moffat ’s Coupling and Smack The Pony . Barber has played glamorous, murderous Elsa since the play’s first performances and has also appeared in Silk and Doctor Who .

The Unfriend is Steven Moffat ’s first stage play, directed by Mark Gatiss ( The League of Gentlemen ). The duo are responsible for some of the best television of the 21st century including Sherlock and Doctor Who , and their eye for making the mundane both hilarious and outrageous is on full display here.

Guess who’s coming to murder! The Unfriend play “hits the funny bone with a twang” and delivers the very best of British humour: self-deprecating, witty and a bit menacing too. Don’t miss its return to London in December 2023.

Too late, they learn the truth about Elsa Jean Krakowski. Deadly danger has just boarded a flight to London! What began as a casual holiday friendship is now a threat to the lives of their children.

Who’s on the cast?

Returning to the West End after a first run at the start of the year, The Unfriend will feature Lee Mack (Would I Lie To You, Not Going Out, Inside No. 9) as Peter, Sarah Alexander (Jonathan Creek, Green Wing, Smack The Pony and Coupling) as Peter’s wife Debbie and Nick Sampson (Witness for the Prosecution, Anthony and Cleopatra) as The Neighbour.

Frances Barber (Silk and Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool) returns to play the role of everyone’s favourite serial killer Elsa Jean Krakowski.

The Unfriend has a running time of 1 hour 55 minutes (including interval) and an age recommendation of 14+.

Lee Mack said: “I’m delighted to be joining The Unfriend with the brilliant Sarah Alexander and the wonderful Frances Barber, and of course all the other amazing cast. It’s such a fantastically written play by Steven Moffat that I might even go the whole hog and learn the words.”

The new play originally made its debut at the Chichester Festival Theatre in 2022 before first transferring to the West End at the Criterion Theatre in 2023.

The Unfriend will play at London’s Wyndhams’ Theatre from 15 December 2023 currently booking through to 9 March 2024.

'I saw Lee Mack's The Unfriend at Wyndham's Theatre and I haven't laughed so hard in a long time'

Lee Mack is a master of comedic timing, and Wyndham's Theatre is beautiful

The Unfriend cast: Nick Sampson, Jem Matthews, Lee Mack, Frances Barber, Sarah Alexander, Maddie Holliday and Muzz Khan

Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss teaming up always results in brilliance - think Doctor Who and Sherlock. Adding Lee Mack into the mix should spawn nothing less than perfection, and that's exactly what The Unfriend at Wyndham's Theatre is.

The premise is admirably close to an episode of Lee Mack's BBC show, Not Going Out . In fact, the whole play feels like an extended, funnier version of that already funny sitcom.

The difference is while Not Going Out is only available to laugh at on iPlayer , The Unfriend runs at Wyndham's Theatre. Not only is it a beautifully ornate building with a reasonable bar (and really nice popcorn), but it also has super-plush comfy seats and brilliant views of the stage no matter how much you're willing to pay.

The Unfriend starts off with married couple Peter and Debbie meeting a slightly unhinged Trump-supporting woman named Elsa on a cruise. They exchange details and expect never to hear from her again, despite her insistence that they will.

The Unfriend cast: Lee Mack, Frances Barber and Sarah Alexander

But when Elsa plans a trip to London, they decide to do some background research on the woman coming to their home. It turns out Elsa is not only an anti-vaxxer, a Trump supporter, and all-round cuckoo... she also might be a murderer.

Watching Peter and Debbie navigate that possibility while fighting British compulsive politeness made me and the rest of the audience continuously laugh out loud for the entire two-hour runtime. Sarah Alexander made perfect sense as the wife, and her portrayal of increasing hysteria outdid Sally Bretton's on Not Going Out.

Lee Mack's comedic timing lends itself perfectly to the stage , but his physical comedy really got the chance to shine in person. He's not only funny, he portrays the 'hopeless and unbearably husband' role so well I am convinced he is exactly like that in real life.

Frances Barber earned several snort laughs and cackles from the crowd as she swanned around as Elsa. The thick accent and affectations she employed made her embody the character in the larger-than-life way needed to keep a simple play like The Unfriend entertaining.

The supporting characters are deserving of just as much praise, with Peter and Debbie's on-stage kids, Rosie and Alex, making the family believable. Not to mention the neighbour and the policeman... but I'll keep their brilliance a secret.

Emerging from the theatre after the final twist, I couldn't stop smiling and recounting moments we'd just witnessed. The Unfriend isn't Shakespeare, nor is it particularly deep and meaningful. It's simply laugh-out-loud delightful, and sometimes that's all you need.

You can book tickets for The Unfriend at Wyndham's Theatre from TodayTix , London Theatre Direct , Love Theatre , Theatre Tickets Direct , and Last Minute . The Unfriend runs at Wyndham's Theatre until March 9.

ITV reveals the future of Lee Mack's The 1% Club

Over 5 million viewers are watching the current series of The 1% Club

Lee Mack for The 1% Club season 3

ITV has announced that the Lee Mack quiz show The 1% Club will return for two more series.

The 1% Club season 3 is currently airing on ITV and it has become a big hit for the broadcaster, pulling in over five million viewers. So, it's therefore not a huge surprise that it's getting two more series, with each including a festive special. Talking about the show's recommission, Not Going Ou t star Lee said: “Well let's be honest, the fact that I haven’t accidentally given a hundred grand to the wrong person or read out the answer instead of the question is as much a surprise to me as it is to everyone else.

"So I'm delighted that ITV are risking me steering this ship once again! Can't wait to discover more of the nation’s brainboxes.”

The 1% Club , which won the Quiz Game Show Award at the 2023 National Television Awards, has the beauty that it's great fun to play along at home.

Lee Mack hosts The 1% Club

The show’s format sees 100 contestants begin every show — but to make it to the end and win the top prize of up to £100,000, contestants must correctly answer a question only 1% of the country would get right.

Contestants of all ages and backgrounds can take part, because, unlike most quizzes, no swotting up on general knowledge is required to do well. Logic and common sense are the key to success. Lee Mack keeps things zipping along, adding in jokes and gently taking the mickey out of the contestants.  It’s also quite a brutal show at times, given that a contestant can get to the end, be the final player, and still end up with nothing!

That element makes it similar to Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? , which also has the jeopardy that players can go away with nothing or drop a huge sum of money.

The 1% Club season 3 continues on Saturday night on ITV1 at 8.35 pm (see our UK TV Guide for full listings).

Next Fleetwood Mac tour could feature 'everyone who's ever played' in the band, says Mick Fleetwood

The 73-year-old drummer says it is his "English pipe dream" that "everyone who's ever played in Fleetwood Mac would be welcome".

Mick Fleetwood has revealed he hopes every past and current member of Fleetwood Mac will perform together the next time the band tour, following the death of co-founder Peter Green.

The 73-year-old drummer said it is his "English pipe dream" that "everyone who's ever played in Fleetwood Mac would be welcome" when the rock group take to the stage again.

Green, who formed Fleetwood Mac with Fleetwood in 1967, died in July aged 73 .

The group's last tour in 2018 did not feature guitarist Lindsey Buckingham who reportedly claimed his ex-partner, singer Stevie Nicks, had given the band "an ultimatum" and forced them to choose between him or her.

But speaking to the Los Angeles Times, Fleetwood said: "I don't look at it like that. Stevie was very unhappy. It was not an ultimatum - it was about taking a breath.

"Two people have walked away from each other, like Liz Taylor and Richard Burton. I understand both people. Lindsey would say: 'You're piggy in the middle, Mick.'"

Fleetwood has been an ever-present member of Fleetwood Mac, along with John McVie who joined shortly after the band was formed.

Green left the group in 1970 as he struggled with mental health problems, before they became one of the biggest-selling acts in rock with a different line-up having switched from blues to pop.

Buckingham quit the band in 1987 and Nicks left four years later, though both returned in 1997. Soon after, singer Christine McVie retired and then rejoined in 2014.

The band's last tour in 2018 saw Buckingham replaced by Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers' Mike Campbell and Crowded House's Neil Finn on guitars.

Asked who will be in Fleetwood Mac the next time the band tours, Fleetwood told the LA Times: "I hope the whole f****** lot of them! I'm not done. And if I can get John McVie off his boat, he's not done either!

"My English pipe dream, sitting on top of a mushroom, would be that everyone who's ever played in Fleetwood Mac would be welcome. That's what would drive me, because this is all about a collective."

An all-star tribute concert honouring Green and the early years of Fleetwood Mac took place at the London Palladium in February last year.

It will be streamed online for the first time next month.

Fleetwood Mac is a British-American Grammy Award winning rock band formed in London, UK in 1967. The band has gone through multiple line-up changes over the years with Mick Fleetwood being the only original band member still present in the current line-up.

Fleetwood Mac, named after John McVie and Mick Fleetwood, is arguably one of the most successful and influential bands of the 20th century. Since their inception in the late 60s, the band has sold over 100 million records worldwide, making them one of the most successful bands ever.

Fleetwood Mac has released an astonishing 17 studio albums to date and has gone through two distinct periods of success in two different rock genres. Originally releasing blues-rock material, the band’s first two albums, “Fleetwood Mac” and “Mr. Wonderful” did well in the UK, both achieving top ten positions in the UK album charts.

As the band’s popularity began to rise, Fleetwood Mac decided to expand their style and play with a more rock and roll edge to their sound. Popular in Europe, the band toured extensively and got involved in the alcohol and drug fuelled rock and roll lifestyle. Frontman at the time, Peter Green, found his metal state deteriorating after the use of LSD, and he eventually left the band in 1970.

From here the band went through a transitional period where Christine McVie, wife to the Fleetwood Mac’s bassist John McVie, was recruited and found the band additional success with her song-writing and vocal abilities. Fleetwood Mac continued to steadily gain popularity throughout the early 70s, but their fame exploded with the recruitment of guitarist Lindsey Buckingham and his vocalist girlfriend Stevie Nicks in 1974.

The new line-up soon released the album “Fleetwood Mac” (also known as “The White Album”) in 1975 and it proved to be a huge breakthrough success. The album shot to number one on the US album charts and spawned legendary tracks "Say You Love Me", "Rhiannon" and "Landslide".

The resulting pressure from this sudden success, combined with the rock and roll lifestyle such success bought, contributed to the breakup of John and Christine McVie, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks, and Mick Fleetwood and his wife Jenny. The band channelled their emotions into their work and produced the album “Rumours”.

The raw emotion contained within “Rumours” rocketed the album to number one in both the UK and US, where it remained at the number one spot for 31 weeks. “Rumours” was an album that seemed to appeal to everyone, and still does today; it’s various singles, "Go Your Own Way", "Dreams", "Don't Stop", "You Make Loving Fun", "Second Hand News", "Gold Dust Woman" and "The Chain" are considered iconic, and the album itself is the second highest selling album of all time.

The band went on to release further successful albums throughout the 80s, 90s and early 2000s. While the various configurations of the group have all achieved success, the power line-up is still considered to be Mick Fleetwood, Stevie Nicks, Christine McVie, Lindsey Buckingham and John McVie.

The band still tours regularly across the globe, constantly changing line-up just as fans have come to expect. Fleetwood Mac is a band that has become legendary within it’s own lifetime. Its constant injections of new talent and the band’s willingness to experiment and take risks have ensured that their success will continue for years to come.

Live reviews

Imagine my joy when my uber cool teenage son began to share my love of Fleetwood Mac. I’d been a fan since my teens, Rumours one of those albums that I would listen to again and again, knowing which song came next and singing the opening refrain before it had a chance to start. (Supertramp’s Breakfast in America was another one.) I struggled with Tusk though, how could they change their style so? I would listen to it every so often just in case I was missing something, but sadly I wasn’t. As the years went on and new ways of finding music opened up to me, I discovered their Fleetwood Mac album and some of the songs on it matched the brilliance of the ones on Rumours. And then came Stevie’s solo career. Her vocals belted out on every track, none of your long drum solos there.

Fast forward to my mum days and my son Ethan, usually interested in whole genres of music of which I’d never heard, began listening to Rumours. It was around this time that I discovered my favourite Fleetwood Mac song - Silver Springs. How had this eluded me?

Ethan loved it too and I particularly enjoyed belting out the line “You’ll never get away from the sound of the woman that loves you” at him and laughing at my own joke.

I found a clip on YouTube that we watch again and again of Stevie Nicks singing Wild Heart backstage while she’s having her make up done. Check it out. I dare the hairs on your arm not to stand on end.

So it came to pass, that I promised Ethan that if Fleetwood Mac were ever to play in London, I would take him. When the tickets were released for the Wembley Concert, I balked at the price - especially as I would have to fork out for his as well. But a promise is a promise and in the words of a famous author : “If not now, when?”. I mean, I’m not getting any younger and Stevie sure ain’t. How long can these guys keep performing. I coughed up and we counted the sleeps.

When I heard that The Pretenders were the support band, I was delighted. Surely Ethan would be too, I mean, who doesn’t know “Brass in Pocket” and “Back on the Chain Gang”?

Ethan doesn’t. So I’m not such a brilliant parent after all.

The doors opened at 5 and we arrived at Wembley Stadium about an hour later, deciding to find our seats first and then go and check out the drink situation. Ouch again, but what the hell and I left Ethan in the queue with my bank card while I went to the loo. At this point I had noticed the lack of food outlets and I must admit I’m never totally relaxed when I don’t know where my next meal is coming from. However, we drank our beer water, chatting amiably, so very excited about seeing Stevie. I wondered where she was staying. Maybe the Elstree Village which is where the Big Brother contestants used to stay when they got booted out (in one of the Deck rooms, of course). Probably not. She’s a bit of a diva, our Steamy, more likely taken over the whole of the Ritz.

With no ado whatsoever, The Pretenders came on and bashed out song after song. Chrissie didn’t seem to mind that the stadium was ⅔ empty and people were talking amongst themselves. I’d described her to Ethan as the ultimate rock chick and she did not let me down - even wearing the tight jeans and capped sleeved t-shirts that I’d told him about. Not bad for 67, strummed and strutted like a good ‘un she did, with not an ounce of a bingo wing in sight.

Hit after hit, the base was too loud but we didn’t care a scrap. We were there for Stevie.

After their set we had another break for a wee and some more beer water (£.6.50 a pint. Nobody forced me to buy it, I know). I was hungry though and decided to get a “felafel dog” and a bag of crisps - more for the satiation value than the Epicurean. We took a queue each and liaised by phone. The queues were very long, but bands of such epic status usually stroll on hours after they’re meant to. There was a quick “oh no, where’s my bank card” scare (Ethan, had it) and ...what was that sound? Somebody was playing the opening bars of Chains (you know, the motor racing one) on their radio.

It was quite loud.

Oh no. The show’s started.

It’s Fleetwood Mac, I’ve paid almost a week’s wages.

But what about supper?

I rang Ethan and yelled: “Forget the food, son. Meet you back in the stadium.”

We got back and somewhere about a mile away in the distance was Stevie Nicks and her band singing their little hearts out. Tis true that we could hardly make them out. Tis also true that the sound quality wasn’t amazing. But we didn’t care. We rocked and rolled, danced and pranced this time drinking our beers from plastic bottles. I’d filled Ethan in on the personnel stuff. I told him that Lindsay had looked at Stevie the wrong way and had been sent packing, replaced by the guy from the band that sings “Weather With You”. I also told him there would be some boring bits where they played tracks from their very early line up. I know my shit and sure enough World Turning came on and we went for another toilet break. When we got back, Mick Fleetwood was still drumming away and Ethan also noticed Stevie’s absence. “She’s probably gone for a little nap,” he said.

At this point I should confess that this was not my first Fleetwood Mac or Stevie Nicks concert. I’d seen them both as a band and with Stevie on her own. It was the eighties and she kept going off stage and coming back in different witchy and twirly outfits. This time, if my eyes serve me correctly, her only concession to this was one of those shrug things over her shoulders.

I missed Lindsay Buckingham. He’s got a distinctive voice and his on and off stage pantomime with Stevie always fascinated me. Neil Finn did a great job though and they even gave him his own spot where he got to sing “Don’t Dream It’s Over” (which incidentally Paul Young nicked. Keep up.)

I turned to look at Ethan and he was swaying happily singing “hey now, hey now”. This almost made him for him not knowing “Don’t Get Me Wrong” earlier.

Incidentally, I must apologise to Christine McVie. She is a wonderful singer in her own right. She seems to take it in good spirits that Stevie gets most of the attention, but they have probably had some right old ding dongs in the past. Her voice is deep and melodic and I hope I’m as cool as her when I’m 75.

More songs from Rumours, a few from Tango in the Night, some slows ones where the phone torches came out and then lastly the wonderful Go Your Own Way. For the encore Stevie sang Free Falling as a tribute to her buddy Tom Petty and they finished off with Don’t Stop.

On our way out we saw someone in a t-shirt that I would love to have but could only wear indoors. Hers didn’t have the stars but I will put them in.

It took a long time to get on the train, but there was still somewhere open when I got to Canons Park at 10.50 and I got chips.

What an evening.

Monday 22nd June. The O2. Fleetwood Mac. A bit of trepidation tonight. Have we got decent seats in the vast dome that is the O2, are the Mac on song, swallowed their many and varied differences and will we get back to Waterloo for the last train. Not to spoil the tension but it’s a yes, yes and thrice yes.

Me and my wife, sounds weird to say that again, venture off down the Jubilee line with all the other middle aged ex rockers to see the hottest ticket in town. We rub shoulders with Heidi from the Sugababes, ahhh pause for a quiet moment to myself, and then it’s ready for the show.

The Walker ticket machine works its magic and though we are at the back on the floor we are on the second row of a raised platform so we can see across those who paid significantly more than us for pretty much the same view.

I won’t rehearse the tempestuous story of the Mac as its too long and too complicated but suffice to say they have all being either married, engaged or romantically involved with each other for the past forty years. Christine McVie has re-joined the band after a 16 year absence and the circle is once again complete. It all somehow works and that tension has led to some of the greatest pop songs ever written in those decades.

Set opener ‘The Chain’ starts the show as it means to go on. The rhythm section of Mick and John are solid and relentless and don’t let up throughout the show and provide a flawless platform for the front three to build on.

There’s clearly some deal between the Christine, Stevie Nicks and Lyndsey Buckingham that they all have an equal quota of their own songs to get through and in the main that works albeit the latter two can slightly cross the line into self-indulgence.

The set hasn’t changed over the ninety odd shows in this tour and draws heavily from Fleetwood Mac and Rumours. All the hits are there, the vocals are spot on especially Christine’s who I think I have been guilty of under estimating in the past. The same is true of Lyndsey Buckingham’s guitar playing; often understated he can rock out with the very best with a unique open strumming style that I’ve not seen before.

The highlight for me is the three song acoustic segment which starts with just Lyndsey singing an emotional ‘Big Love’ (slightly spoilt by some existential monologue preamble) and then joined by Stevie for a spine tingling ‘Landslide’ which brought the lump to throat, hairs on end and tears in eye moment. Sublime.

It’s a slick two and a half hour show and forty years later they still have it. Unnecessary Mick Fleetwood drum solo and a low key although perfectly delivered final encore of ‘Songbird’ aside it was the perfect show. A swift exit and we’re home by midnight.

It was a great night filled to the rafters! I feel as much as I did enjoy it, there was a couple of things that need to be aired, I am sure I was not the only one.

No offence intended here so please note this.

I came to see Fleetwood Mac, Yes I do like Neil Finn’s music and it was a thrill to see and hear him playing, I am also aware that nowadays, it’s the thing with bands that they have members from other top bands play with them as members of the group or share the time and advertise that they are both playing on stage basically sharing so they have the invited one open for them, yes that is feat. But this was not the case. Neil Finn was playing and singing with them, Neil also payed and sung at least three of his top hits even that I did not mind! But what I did mind was we were all sitting there for 20 mins or more waiting for them to come out and start, The tickets said( Show starts 8:00pm SHARP! ) so we could have been listening to Neil Finn play his 3 songs and more for the 20 mins. That’s not all! Stevie Nicks I am well aware this group may be aging and probably can’t cope with singing and playing for two hours straight like they used to but why wasn’t Stevie singing all her own songs or only actually singing some of the song while the blonde one was singing most of it for her, am I missing something here? I understand if there was a reason for this but the other one doesn’t even sound anything like Stevie, this was disappointing. Couldn’t believe even after they came on 20 mins late they only sang one song for encore never even gave us our 20minutes back! Bit mean really considering those who spent $a considerable amount of money to go and hear their band play. We all sat there only one or two songs did we all join in with and after all that they didn’t even play “TUSK” I thought they would have at least finished with this one, nup waited all night to hear it, so feel a tad let down to put it politely! I hope they take this on board and do something about it for Melbourne! I doubt they will be back as that’s why I put myself out to go this time. If they did I wouldn’t bother again to be honest had great seats here too!

I am a huge fan of Fleetwood Mac, regardless of the exact lineup, as long as the core is there, and for me, the core is the rhythm section, bass and drums. John and Mick are like a machine and are definitely in the Top Ten Rhythm Sections in rock, past and future.

I have liked them with Peter Green and Jeff Spencer, with Christine, and with Stevie and Lindsey. The thing that has tied all of these iterations together has really been Mick Fleetwood. He is a machine, I think of him sort of as a steam locomotive.

Because he is so tall, when he starts up, sometimes there is an inperceptable lag, and he plays his snare primarily behind the beat, laid back big time, but once he is rolling, that size imparts inertia (1st Law of Motion, 2nd half) and smoothness in his playing, grooving on the top with perfect timing. Also some drummers just drum, boom pop boom pop, standard rock and blues beats, but Fleetwood plays parts.

Few do this, and they are usually considered to be among the greats, Watts, Starr, Helm, Pocaro, Collins, think about it. Then there is one other thing great drummers do(and musicians in general), AND THIS IS THE HARDEST, THEY KNOW WHEN NOT TO PLAY, including playing fewer fills.

All that I have said is not meant to discount the fact that FM was lucky enough to bring together several of the greatest voices in music history. Also they were all very unique, character voices, unique, which is what I love in a voice, but it

means that that singer may be VERY hard to replace. If they weren't, they would not

I have written too much, but my last point is, if a band needs to replace a "unique singer", most times, I think they should let the new singer be themselves, otherwise it probably won't work, if they are lucky and may even sound corny, fake, bad. FM has made this mistake a couple of times in later years, but they are still on 90% of the time, and at their level, that is something.

Fleetwood Mac were a little before my time. Having formed in 1967 as a British blues band, Mick Fleetwood had already seen the complete transformation of personal and sound by the time I was born. In fact, up until recently, I thought the Buckingham-Nicks line-up represented the original Fleetwood Mac. As it turns out, Rumours was actually their eleventh album…and it beat me into this world by exactly four days. That was an amazing time for Fleetwood Mac as a band, but it was also a tumultuous time for its members. There are almost as many stories and documentaries about the drug-fueled, incestuous nature of the band as there are songs by the band, so I won’t delve too deep into those right now, but I will say that Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks, Christine McVie, John McVie and Mick Fleetwood are shining examples of ‘what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger’.

I didn't realize how much we were missing until Christine opened her mouth. With the first note of her voice it hit me instantly that she is the soulful heart of the band's sound. Having seen the show on their last tour and seven more going back to 1971 the band is like a fist of five when all together. To me being a seasoned Fleetwood Mac fan, I rightfully acknowledge Mic and John as the leaders accompanied by gifted talent. The Lindsey and Stevie duo was added chemistry similar to John and Christine which made for Mic to be the beat of a chemist. They still turn on the enthusiasm of us older folks as well as introduce themselves to the young just as they did in the beginning. No doubt they have built themselves into one of the top artists to entertain the world with their work, pleasing many and fulfilling their heavenly expectations and purpose they were united for. Thanks FM.

One of the best concerts that I've ever attended; and I've been to many a concert over the years.I couldn't see an empty seat in the house and that's almost 20,000 fans who sang along with the band. Stevie Nicks was truly outstanding as were ALL the band members. Words cannot describe the quality of this band and the excitement among fans. Fleetwood Mac's show lasted ninety minutes and that was ninety minutes of pure adrenaline and electricity. A tribute to Tommy Petty with the bands cover of, 'FREE FALLING' was both appropriate and had 20,000 singing along. 'Go YOUR OWN WAY,'brought down the house, along with any number of songs from their catalog. Never mind the absence of Lindsey Buckingham,it made little if any difference at all. This performance was worth every penny and then some. One will NOT want to miss this joy of a concert!

Someone on facebook asked me "they sound good? or like old rockers?"... This is my response and review here - "They sounded great ...Stevie may avoid a couple of the top notes here and there, but they have girls backing her up. She's still the same amazing, mystical creature she's always been. Lindsey's guitar playing is better than ever and a total spectacle (and he knows it.. lol ). Christine's return brings the band's distinctive harmonies back, not to mention 6 songs which I can't imagine them doing without her. They're so happy all be together through it all that the mutual respect is palpable as they've all put their dramas behind them for the greater good. They brought the house down with "Go Your Own Way" before the first encore. .. What an arsenal of songs they throw at you.. just an amazing show!"

To tell the truth, before the evening started I was more excited at the prospect of seeing Chryssie Hynde and The Pretenders again (they didn’t disappoint, and she continues to inspire - I was mystified as to why more folk didn’t turn up sooner - this was a support act truly worth catching). On reflection, as good as they were, the main event was to follow. And how.

From the opening chords of The Chain, the greatest songs (with the exception of Sara - how come?) were crafted, as fresh as if it was 30, 40, 50 (any advance?) years ago. A treat to see Neil Finn join the band, and delirium almost set in when he duetted Don’t Dream It’s Over with Stevie Nicks. She kidded us - how to follow such a song, she teased - then gave a perfect version of Landslide. Delirious, delicious, delighted.

In 1977 when I was 18 years old, one of my singing idols was Stevie Nicks and the band Fleetwood Mac. Singing was and is a passion of mine. I joined a rock n' roll band and sang for many years. My husband was the lead guitarist in the band. Our band did not get a break even though we worked hard, starved, and struggled through our passions. My husband and I went to the Fleetwood Mac Concert at the Rogers Arena in Vancouver, BC, on Saturday April 4th, 2015. It was the original band including Christine McVie. The show was fantastic. We were not disappointed. They sang and played exactly how I imagined they would when I was 18 years old. We had a blast. We will never forget that night and were thrilled to have seen, in our opinion, one of the best bands there is.

Orville Peck Announces Expansive Stampede Tour Ahead of Willie Nelson Collab

By Tomás Mier

After taking a break from touring, Orville Peck is ready to hit the road.

Rolling Stone can exclusively announce that the country star — who recently announced his signing to Warner Records — will hit the road later this year on a massive headlining tour. He also teased a new collaboration with Willie Nelson .

“I took a break from last year to focus on myself and even though it was a difficult decision at the time, I’m so happy I did,” he tells Rolling Stone . “I feel healthier and happier than I’ve ever felt in my life and I cannot wait to get back on the road.”

Peck will commence the tour on May 28 in North Carolina, before making stops in Atlanta, Columbus, Chicago, Toronto, St. Louis, and Los Angeles. He’ll bring numerous other artists on the road with him, including The War and Treaty , Gold Star, and Nikki Lane.

Nelson is set to join Peck on a cover of Ned Sublette’s queer-coded track, “Cowboys Are Frequently Secretly Fond Of Each Other.” (Nelson previously covered it in 2006.)

“Just getting to be around Willie is so special,” Peck says. “You’d think he would make you starstruck because he is such a legend, but he just emanates joy.”

“It was his initial idea for us to do the song together and I will forever be grateful for his support,” he adds. “As an artist who has sometimes felt excluded from the Country music industry, once Willie Nelson wants to work with you, there’s really nothing the country world can say after that.”

The new song with the country legend follows Peck’s release earlier this year of “This Masquerade,” and his 15-track album Bronco last April, which featured singles “The Curse of the Black Eye” and “C’mon Baby, Cry.”

Masters: PGA Tour’s Min Woo Lee to play Augusta National with broken hand

As if Augusta National does not create enough storylines, one of the PGA Tour stars dropped a dumb bell on his hand and broke it.

The Masters - Preview Day Three, Min Woo Lee

The 88th Masters Tournament is upon us. It is the event that for many golf fans marks the beginning of spring. With it, brings the mystique and aura of Augusta National .

There are always so many storylines at play this week. This year is no exception.

The emergence of LIV Golf and its 13 members who will tee it up as obviously a major talking point. Rory McIlroy going after a Green Jacket to complete the career Grand Slam is at play for the 10th time.

Tiger Woods expressed full confidence that McIlroy will indeed complete the feat .

But an unexpected story has emerged as players prepare for The Masters.

The Masters - Preview Day Three, Min Woo Lee

Min Woo Lee, a rising star on the PGA Tour, broke his hand while working out recently. Unbelievably, he is still giving it a go.

“I was in the gym on I think Saturday. Yeah, Saturday last week. I was just doing like a side bridge glute thing and it was literally my last rep, last set thing, and I like threw the dumb bell down and somehow clipped my right ring finger,” Lee said Tuesday.

“Broke it. But, yeah, I have it bandaged up right now. You know, I hit my first shot for the last week on Friday, so hit my first full driver... It’s actually amazing how fast the recovery was. It was bruised, still swollen, but not actually that painful which is really strange.

“Somehow recovering very good, so icing and elevating as much as I can. Yeah, I guess it wasn’t the best prep.”

Not only is he dealing with a broken hand, but also an illness.

“I got the flu two days ago. Yeah, it’s going great,” Lee said sarcastically.

He will be looking to improve upon last year when he went 75-75 to miss the cut. The year prior, his debut at Augusta, he posted a T14 finish.

The 25-year-old is without a win on the PGA Tour. Yet, he posted five top-10s in his 14 starts last year. That includes a T5 finish at The Open and finishing tied for sixth at The Players.

He has shown a penchant for playing big in big tournament during his young career. But how will he fare with a broken hand and the flu? Only time will tell.

Lee tees it up alongside Patrick Cantlay and Rickie Fowler at 10:06am ET Thursday morning.
