Live reviews

Steve Perry is best known for his continued stellar vocals in rock music. He is most successful for singing the original version of “Don’t Stop Believing” which was of course reprised in the hit television show, Glee.

Tonight, this rock and roll veteran struts onto the stage to complete adoration from an audience, some of whom have been with Perry since the Journey days, and they can’t wait to hear some of those old classics, and also some younger people too, who have only discovered Perry in possibly the last ten years.

Opening with “You Better Wait”, a hungry audience is entirely engaged rocking back and forth with their hands in the air; everyone dancing with huge grins on their face in awe at the raw talent that Perry has never lost. There are more intimate moments of the set with the audience when he sings “Missing You”. His three-octave range is a force to be reckoned with, and I struggle to understand how he gets his voice box in the gear that allows him to get up to those high notes. He teases the audience with a version of “Don’t Stop Believing”, and why not! The royalty cheques that he has been cashing in recently must be absolutely mammoth! Could there be a Journey reunion sometime in the near future, complete with Randy Jackson? Who knows!

The best vocals in the industry. I'm in Memphis, TN., I met Steve in the lobby of the Peabody. He turned around and ask for my name....I told him Cherri. He began to sing "Oh Sherry". He caught me off guard...then he ran off.

I had a friend that was a roadie. He called and invited me to go to the concert. I had the honor of seeing Steve warm up for his sound check.

I was blessed to have had the opportunity to encounter those memories.

Neal Schon Says Journey Will Play Stadiums for 50th Anniversary, Doesn’t Rule Out Steve Perry Return

The year 2023 will be a big one for Journey , who will celebrate their 50th anniversary as a band and in a rather significant way — guitarist Neal Schon has suggested the group will play stadiums next year in what is still quite a secretive operation. And he didn't rule out the return of two classic members either.

His comments came in an interview with  Entertainment Tonight , which also touched on Journey's new album Freedom and their Las Vegas residency shows which feature a symphony orchestra. Schon even laughed a bit when he was asked how many times Journey rehearsed with the orchestra before opening night and replied, "One day."

The interview then put the focus on the future and what lies ahead beyond the Vegas gigs as Journey prepare to celebrate 50 years as a band. "We're going back into stadiums with someone I can't really talk about right now," commented Schon, playing things close to the vest while managing to tease what appears to be quite a massive forthcoming announcement.

The guitarist was also asked about the likelihood of singer Steve Perry and keyboardist Gregg Rolie, who split with the group in 1998 and 1980, respectively. "You know, I think that those two guys were a big part of the band and I think if [it] permits - the city permits - the fans would overall love it," says Schon, though it's uncertain exactly what he meant in regards to the city permits — perhaps securing stadium locations and complying with local noise ordinances, but that remains unconfirmed.

Schon didn't rule out the return of either member and those comments follow recent remarks where the guitarist claimed he and Perry are "talking and getting to know each other again" but cautioned that they "are not trying to get together musically again."

Earlier this year, in May, the lone remaining Journey founder told UCR , "We’re going to celebrate the 50th anniversary and then celebrate it again in ‘24,” Schon tells UCR. “It’s my 50th year with Journey and I’m the only original member left there. You know, Jon [Jonathan Cain] is 40 years with us. Deen [Castronovo] has a good two decades and Arnel [Pineda] is now 15 years, the longest run of any singer [with Journey]."

He even has his eyes on sharing the bill with Carlos Santana and revealed in that same conversation, "I talked to Carlos and I talked to his manager about it the other day. He says Carlos definitely wants to do some stuff. I said, what about the latter part of ‘23? We could possibly go from big arenas in Europe to stadiums and finish out ‘23 in the stadiums, in South America and all of that."

Steve Perry has joined forces with Irish folk group The High Kings for their new single - and he's told us why

Watch the Video for the Steve Perry-enhanced folk ballad The Streets Of Kinsale

Steve Perry recording in the studio, and The High Kings

Steve Perry has made a surprise guest appearance on a new single from the Irish folk group The High Kings, The Streets Of Kinsale , which is released today.

Talking to Classic Rock , the reclusive former lead singer of Journey has also confirmed rumours of a duet with country superstar Dolly Parton on Parton’s upcoming rock album, said to be titled Rock Star . The pair worked together on a new version of Journey’s Open Arms .

Perry became involved with The High Kings through a friendship with the song’s writer, Glen Power, drummer of Irish group The Script.

“I thought the song was beautiful and the more I listened to it the more fascinated I became, so I went to my home studio and started stacking some vocal harmonies against what was already there,” Perry tells Classic Rock . “The band really loved the results, so I ended up singing on the master-track.”

“When we heard what Steve had done to our song, I had to sit down,” says Darren Holden from The High Kings. “In the studio we zoned out everything else and just listened to Steve’s wall of sound. It was so astonishing my jaw hit the floor; there were tears in my eyes. It’s something that only Steve can do with that tone that the world loves and knows.”

Based on separate sides of the Atlantic band and singer are yet to meet face to face but although Perry isn’t planning to make stage cameos with The High Kings when they tour America, the way he did with the US alternative band Eels in 2014 – his first time onstage as a lead singer in 19 years – it’s something that he won’t rule out.

“You never know,” smiles Steve. “But it’s a good idea and I do love the guys. Darren’s voice is scary. If it were to happen, I might be a bit intimidated.”

“Oh, come on Steve – seriously?” responds Holden. “But we would love to have Steve to sing with us at some point. Who wouldn’t?”

Having kept a very low profile since leaving Journey for the second time in 1998, Perry is in no hurry to follow up his fourth solo album, 2021’s Christmas set The Season. However, he was thrilled to record with Dolly Parton for her album which is reported to feature the likes of Paul McCartney , Steven Tyler, Stevie Nicks, John Fogerty , Nikki Sixx, REO Speedwagon’s Kevin Cronin and pop singer Pink.

“I’ve still got so much [of my own new] music backed up in my studio, but the truth is that I’m a bit lazy,” Perry admits with a mild chuckle. “Right now, I’m only doing things that I can really emotionally connect with. Anything else, I kind of pull away from.

“The duet between Dolly and I on Open Arms has just been mixed by Chris Lord-Alge and it sounds great,” he reveals. “Dolly told me she had always loved the song and wanted to sing it on an album. Open Arms has been recorded many, many times down the years, but, honestly, she killed it. Dolly is singing her tush off.”

ABOUT JOURNEY

Since the group's formation in 1973, JOURNEY has earned 19 top 40 singles, 25 gold and platinum albums, and has sold over 100 million albums globally. Their "Greatest Hits" album is certified 15 times-platinum, making JOURNEY one of the few bands to ever have been diamond-certified, and their song "Don't Stop Believin'" has been streamed over one billion times alone.

JOURNEY was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2017, and 2018's co-headlining tour with DEF LEPPARD was the band's most successful tour to date, landing them in the Top 10 year-end touring chart with more than 1 million tickets sold, and earning them the prestigious Billboard "Legends Of Live" touring award. March 2019 saw the release of "Escape & Frontiers Live In Japan", a live DVD/CD set from their concert at the Budokan in Tokyo featuring the band's first-ever performances of the albums "Escape" and "Frontiers" in their entirety. JOURNEY has also received a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame and were inducted into the Hollywood Bowl Hall Of Fame. Additionally, the band is the subject of the award-winning documentary "Don't Stop Believin': Everyman's Journey" about the band's resurgence upon adding Arnel Pineda as lead singer after JOURNEY Founder, Neal Schon discovered the Philippines native on YouTube.

The members of TOTO are celebrating an accomplishment few bands have achieved in the modern era. Cumulative streams of the ensemble’s repertoire

now exceed 3 billion plays. Amongst the most listened to recordings, “Africa” accounts for over one billion streams at Spotify alone. This year the song was recertified by the RIAA 8X Platinum.

Over the past decade, the band has had a major renaissance in popularity like few bands at this point in their career. The audience is truly multi-generational, becoming younger with each passing year. Joining Steve Lukather and Joseph Williams are band members bassist John Pierce (Huey Lewis and The News), drummer Robert “Sput” Searight (Ghost-Note, Founding member Snarky Puppy, Snoop Dogg), keyboardist Dominique “Xavier” Taplin (Prince, Ghost-Note), multi-instrumentalist / vocalist Warren Ham (Ringo Starr) and keyboardist / background vocalist Steve Maggiora,. This line-up marks the fifteenth incarnation of Toto in consideration of band members or sidemen who joined or exited. Individually and collectively, few have had a larger imprint on pop culture than the members of TOTO. The family tree can be heard on an astonishing 5000 albums that together amass a sales history of a half a billion albums. Amongst these recordings, NARAS applauded the performances with hundreds of Grammy nominations.

With now 45+ years together and literally thousands of credits, including the biggest selling album of all time: Michael Jackson’s Thriller, and accolades to their names, TOTO remains one of the top selling touring and recording acts in the world. They are the benchmark by which many artists base their sound and production, and they continue to transcend the standards set by the entire music community, being simply synonymous with musical credibility. They are pop culture and are one of the few 70’s bands that have endured the changing trends and styles continuing to remain relevant.

Neal Schon Addresses Possibility Of Steve Perry’s Return To JOURNEY For Upcoming 50th Anniversary Tour

  • July 21, 2022
  • 1 minute read

In a recent conversation with Entertainment Tonight, guitarist  Neal Schon  mentioned that singer  Steve Perry  might return to  Journey  for the upcoming 50th-anniversary tour.

“We’re going back into stadiums with someone I can’t really talk about right now.

“You know, I think that those two guys were a big part of the band and I think [that] if the city permits, the fans would overall love it.”

Earlier, Neal Schon has recently been talking about how the acquisition of Journey’s trademark led him to rekindle his relationship with the singer Steve Perry, as he told Eddie Trunk in a recent interview .

Here’s what he said:

“It definitely was nothing about music at all; it was just basically catching up — some things about business, some things about ‘how’re you doing in your life,’ just general friendship stuff. And [I’m] looking forward to moving forward with him like that, just as a friend.”

Saw Journey in 1981 at the Pasadena Rose Bowl. What a show.

I dont thnk it will happen due to legal action brought by SP with regard to trademark isssues that recently surfaced.PP

Steve Perry is absolutely amazing no doubt about that, but lets also recognize how great of a guitar player Neal is & how great of a piano/keyboardist Jonathan Cain is, they all had great chemistry as musicians. Just superb musicians/singers. I hope they can reunit all the classic lineup.

I would move Heaven and Earth to see Steve Perry with Journey again! I saw them in 1981 and that was the best show ever! This would be the reunion of a lifetime and I won’t miss it!!

I with all of you Steve Perry is Journey he is the VOICE OF JOURNEY and I pray to God that I get to see them one more time all together before I die.

Mixed feelings. The Steve of today doesn’t sound anywhere near the Steve of 40 years ago. Steve USED to be the man but Arnel is the better of the two in 2022 IMO

Why Some People Are Saying Steve Perry Will Be Back with Journey in 2024

I want to be 100% clear and upfront about this article.

This is NOT an announcement that Steve Perry is going to be singing with Journey when the band plays the Las Cruces Pan Am Center next year on March 21st.

But there are A LOT of rumors swirling around. Here are the top reasons people are saying Perry and the band might be reuniting.

1.) IT IS THEIR 50th ANNIVERSARY

Journey has announced their tour schedule for next year as the “Journey 50th Anniversary Tour 2024”. That’s a major milestone and, let’s be honest, there probably won’t be a 75th-anniversary tour. If they’re going to finally pull this trigger, next year would be the year to do it.

2.) PERRY JUST DROPPED A BUNCH OF LAWSUITS AGAINST THE BAND

Last year in September of 2022, Steve Perry filed a lawsuit against his former bandmates over 20 Journey songs that Perry was claiming as registered trademarks. It was quietly reported  that Perry had dropped that lawsuit.

Maybe it DOESN’T mean anything, but plenty of fans are taking it as a sign that a reunion is in the works.

will steve perry tour in 2023

3.) NEAL SCHON SAYS HE IS DOWN FOR A REUNION

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight in July guitarist and co-founder Neal Schon said he was “open to the idea” of reuniting with Perry. Shon said that he and Perry were “talking and getting to know each other again”.

VERY interesting!

4.) SOMEBODY IN THE LOOP TOLD ME AS MUCH

I can’t name any names here (I promised I wouldn’t)… but somebody “in the know” intimated to me that a Perry/Journey reunion was “ being talked about”.

This is STILL just a rumor at this point but my source told me, “ They’ve been talking back and forth about how they might make this happen”.

Again, this is not an announcement or even a prediction. But, as the old song says, “Don’t stop believing” !

Journey's Neal Schon says he and Steve Perry are 'in a good place' before band's 50th anniversary

will steve perry tour in 2023

On the cusp of turning 50, the band that etched “Don’t Stop Believin’ ” and “Faithfully” into lighters-up lore is entering “a cleaned-up chapter of Journey.”

That’s according to Neal Schon, the band’s ace guitarist, lone original constant and de facto CEO.

Despite decades of fluctuating lineups and  snarly lawsuits among band members , Journey endures.

On July 8, the band released “Freedom,” its first new album in 11 years that also presents the return of Randy Jackson (as in "American Idol") on bass. The 15-song collection is steeped with vintage-sounding ballads (“Still Believe in Love,” “Live to Love Again”) and soaring melodic rockers (“United We Stand,” “You Got the Best of Me”).

Journey – including longtime keyboardist Jonathan Cain,  peppy singer Arnel Pineda , drummer Deen Castronovo and keyboardist Jason Derlatka, adding bassist Todd Jensen for live shows – will hit Resorts World Las Vegas  this month for shows backed by a symphony orchestra before rolling through more arena dates this summer and in early 2023, the band’s official 50th year.

Journey in pop culture: Quarantined family perfectly re-creates 'Separate Ways' music video at home

Regular road warriors who consistently pack arenas and stadiums – their 27 shows this year grossed $28 million, according to Billboard Boxscore – Journey relies on a solid catalog of mega-hits and a devoted fan base that appreciates the familiarity.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Famers also received a boost from Netflix’s ’80s-centered “Stranger Things” when the show used “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)” in the trailer for the just-ended season, launching the song onto Billboard’s Rock Digital Songs chart. The affable Schon, 68, talked with USA TODAY about the band’s complicated legacy, his relationship with former frontman Steve Perry and plans for Journey's golden anniversary.

Santana recovers: Carlos Santana collapsed on stage from heat, dehydration

Question: Are you amazed at how the Journey train keeps rolling after almost 50 years?

Neal Schon: It’s quite an accomplishment and I’m very proud of what we’ve done and how we’ve gotten through emotional and personnel changes and survived. It’s pretty mind-boggling but also a lot of hard work.

Q: Does the title “Freedom” refer to anything specifically?

Schon: Our ex-manager Herbie Herbert  wanted to call the (1986) “Raised on Radio” album “Freedom” because he always came up with these one-word titles. Steve (Perry) fought him on that and got his way, so we sat on it for many years. When we got through the lawsuit with the ex-bandmates, we made the new LLC Freedom (JN) and when we were tossing around album titles said, why not just call the whole thing “Freedom?" It's for the times right now.

Q: There’s been a bit of a revolving door in the rhythm section. Deen Castronovo is back for the live shows, but Narada Michael Walden played drums on the album, and Randy Jackson is back in the band, at least on record?

Schon: Deen is singing and playing his butt off. He’s such a musical sponge, this guy. He’s been like my little brother for close to three decades and is such a joy to work with. Randy, he’d been working with me diligently this whole time. He’s so many things beyond being an amazing musician and bass player.

Rock in the rain: Def Leppard, Motley Crue, Poison, Joan Jett combat weather during The Stadium Tour

Q: Will Randy play at any of the upcoming live shows or is Todd Jensen handling those duties?

Schon: Randy is still recovering from some surgery and he stays very busy and Todd fits like a glove. Having said that, I think with our 50th anniversary next year, there’s room for everybody to jump in if they want to participate. We did go through an ugly divorce with (Steve Smith and Ross Valory) with the court proceedings (in 2021, Schon and Cain settled a $10 million trademark lawsuit with the band’s former drummer and bassist). But definitely, if Steve Perry wanted to come on and sing a song, yes. If (original Journey singer) Gregg Rolie wanted to come sing a couple of songs, yes. Randy Jackson (can) come sit in on some of the material – he played on a lot of hits on “Raised on Radio.”

Q: Do you talk much with Steve Perry?

Schon: We are in contact. It’s not about him coming out with us, but we’re speaking on different levels. That’s a start, even if it’s all business. And I’m not having to go through his attorney! We’ve been texting and emailing. He’s a real private guy and he wants to keep it that way. We’re in a good place.

Q: Do you think, after 15 years, that people have accepted Arnel?

Schon: I was diligent in that I wanted to show the massive size of our audience, so I hired photogs to come out every show and shoot the audience and show the size of the crowd to make everybody see, what am I missing? From putting up the different photos every night and the reviews from the fans online, I saw very little of “This is not Journey, man.” I think we just shut everybody up.

Journey Fans Turn to Facebook to Congratulate Steve Perry and Band on Biggest Song of All Time

B eloved Journey singer and songwriter Steve Perry recently shared his enthusiasm for the band’s worldwide recognition for “Don’t Stop Believin’” (1981) being named the Biggest Song of All Time by Forbes , and his legion of fans took no time to respond back.

Perry shared on Facebook:

“When this ‘Don’t Stop Believin’,’ “The Biggest Song of ALL Time” article came out yesterday {3/19/24}, I was so emotionally stunned. To be part of such a moment as this made me reflect on my parents. By that I mean, though I lost them both years ago, I was so happy for them because they are truly the reason this is happening. My dad was a singer and both of them were very musical. So on behalf of my Mom and Dad, I thank every one of you for so many years of support. -Sincerely, Steve Perry”

Earlier this year, Perry also updated fans on his remastering of the original Journey analog masters. Sharing he was excited to revisit those original tapes. He also shared that Journey Greatest Hits (1988) had been certified 18X Platinum in the U.S. and was tied for 13 th best-selling album of ALL TIME according to the RIAA (Record Industry Association of America). You can f ollow Perry on Facebook here .

Guitarist Neal Schon , who still plays with the band under now lead singer Arnel Pineda , also added to Perry’s post: “I may self reflect back to the time we spent in my studio in Oakland, CA, where we wrote it. This was the 3 of us Jon, Steve and myself with band where we collectively wrote this song ‘DSB’ has become somewhat of a world anthem! A lot to be proud of congrats to everybody.”

On Schon’s own page he announced the honor and also shared the band’s current tour schedule.

With “Don’t Stop Believin’” (DSB) being one of the most downloaded songs of the 20 th century, naturally thousands of fans from around the world poured in their support and enthusiasm congratulating Perry, Schon, Jonathan Cain (the original writers) and the current band for the accomplishment.

• “This song is forever. It really picks you up when you feel lost and just want to give up. The emotion is strong felt; it hits your core. All together you ignited such a powerful and substantial influence. The Answer!” — Linda Jane Cruz

Can you guess which one it is?

• “Congratulations Steve Perry! Bringing your experiences to the song definitely made it what is. Love the passion you put into music, still listening 40+ years later! Don’t Stop Believing in your magic! ” — Bo Chin

• “This song is Timeless and speaks to all of us…even 40 years later. What an accomplishment.” — Norma Staszkiewicz

• “Congratulations on such high praise!! Those three words are like an “Anthem for the Ages” or stages. Life happens…Don’t Stop Believin’” — Sharon Thallas

• “The Biggest song, sung by the Best voice of all time Thank you so much for sharing that great voice with us throughout the years Your Journey years, your solo career and your participation in ‘We Are the World,’ is truly amazing Your parents must have been so proud of who you are and all of your achievements. Wish you all the best for years to come!” — Espen Kjaerland

• “Congratulations Steve Perry! This is so well deserved. You’re so humble to give your parents the credit — I’m sure they were very proud of you. So glad your mom encouraged you to keep going and not give up on your dream. Your voice is a God-given gift that we’ve all been blessed to enjoy all these years and your fans are so grateful for all the great memories you and Journey collectively have given us. ‘DSB’ was written by you, Neal and Jon, but it became the greatest song of all time due to your iconic voice. You will always be ‘The (greatest) Voice’ of all time! Hope you know you’re appreciated and your fans have never ‘stopped believin’! And thanks for listening to your Mom!” — Julayne Sinicki

• “I’ve been thinking about how you respond when people congratulate you on your success and immense talent. I want to assure you that you truly are amazing! You possess the Midas touch for any work you are involved in. Not only are you gifted with talent, but you also have years of experience and a passion that stems from deep emotions. I felt it was very humble of you to credit your parents for your recent success, but you must know that your parents have been proud of you since the day you were born, and even now, looking down on you from Heaven, they are most proud not only of your musical achievements but also of the kind of human being you have become. They are proud of you for all the difficult struggles you have overcome and your courage that shines through every day as you keep moving forward and taking risks in love and life. You are too hard on yourself sometimes. I want you to know that you can take a deep breath and relax. You are doing so well and have been doing well and will continue to do well. You have made your mark in this world and in the hearts of millions, and you will continue to do so. So today, hold your head high and know that you are loved.” — Victoria Scragg

• “Neal congrats! Thank you for keeping Journey alive. Show after show sold out. What a success. I attended 6 of them in the past 2 years, you guys still have millions of fans.” — Marty Martin
