Wines & Vineyards
No Mediterranean meal is complete without a robust red or chilled, crisp white wine as accompaniment. And there is nothing better to accompany local Maltese dishes than a wine produced on the Islands.
International grape varieties grown here include Cabernet Sauvignon , Merlot , Syrah , Grenache , Sauvignon Blanc , Chardonnay , Carignan , Chenin Blanc and Moscato . Then there are the indigenous varieties, Gellewza and Ghirghentina , which are producing some excellent wines of distinct body and flavour.
Grapes grown in Malta’s hot and humid climate ripen much quicker than their counterparts further north. Wineries are careful to grow varieties suited to the distinct limestone terroir. Soil samples are sent to leading European experts to assess which varieties will thrive here.
The efforts of the past couple of decades are reaping rewards for the local wine industry. Several local wines are found on UK supermarket shelves and deservedly so. Northern European markets are just beginning to discover the secret of Maltese wines.
If wine is your hobby, passion or favourite accompaniment to a sociable meal, the Maltese Islands have plenty to offer.
Tours and Tasting
The main wineries organise guided tours and tastings. Depending on the season, tours cover the entire production from the initial fermentation through to the ageing process. They also include wine history museums and opportunities to taste and buy a variety of vintages. Wine-tasting and vineyard tours are also organised by specialised local agents such as Merill Eco Tours .

Wine Tasting Malta Tour
The Three Cities is a collective description of the three fortified cities of Cospicua, Vittoriosa and Senglea. During the wine tasting tour, you will drive past Cospicua, a double fortified harbour city and the largest of the three. You will then arrive in Vittoriosa which has developed a very long history with maritime, mercantile and military activities. Prior to the establishment of Valletta as capital and main city of Malta, military powers that wanted to rule the Maltese islands would need to obtain control of Vittoriosa due to its significant position in the Grand Harbour. The third city Senglea is also called Civitas Invicta because it managed to resist the Ottoman invasion at the Great Siege of 1565. The name Senglea was given by the grandmaster who built it, Claude De La Sengle. The island on which Senglea lies was joined by a land bridge to Cospicua during the time of the Knights of St. John and as a result, it became peninsular in shape. During this tour you will walk through the various narrow streets shaded by many historic churches and buildings.
You will then drive to the Marsovin Cellars in Marsa. The wine tasting Malta tour commences with a historical introduction amongst original artefacts, followed by an explanation about the process of how the locally grown grapes are pressed, fermented and eventually transformed into wine. A walk through the 400-year-old ‘Ageing Cellars’ is an authentic and true piece of Maltese heritage. The wine sampling is held in the Marsovin wine bar, where trained staff guide guests through a wine tasting session to sample different Marsovin wines accompanied by a selecion of local savouries like maltese bread and cheese.

--> Fine Wine with Personality
One often attributes human characteristics to wine. A wine can be robust, opulent, tenacious, even elegant, profound or flirtatious.
At Ta’ Betta we playfully describe a wine, or even a specific vintage, in terms of the personality or character it evokes: be it young or old, open and ready or still closed on the nose, be it masculine or feminine, rough or refined.
the character of the Wines & Terroir
One can never make good wine from poor grapes, one can never make authentic wines by using chemistry to cover up shortfalls or to bolster nature’s yield.
More about our Terroir
know-how & the Tachis School
A good wine-maker should know how far to go to bring out the character of a grape varietal, of a vintage, to reflect what happened in the vineyard that year. Not all years will yield the same character, indeed that of itself creates the scope of vertical tastings as a narrative of time past. Read More

Isabella Guasconi
The Flirtatious
This youthful Syrah Rosé is a fresh, dry, medium-bodied wine, fermented in cast stone vats, benefits from a light passage through 500-litre oak tonneaux which contribute further to its overall structure and personality.

The Tenacious
This oak-fermented Chardonnay, produced against all odds, is a complex wine which conveys apricot, white fig and vanilla to balance the acidity and alcohol.
Antonio Manoel
The Opulent
This opulent blend of Merlot with Cabernet Sauvignon typically conveys cassis, strawberry and red forest-fruit, with undertones of chocolate and caramel.
Philippe Villiers
This robust blend of Syrah with Cabernet Franc typically conveys forest-fruit on the nose with undertones of tobacco, black and bell pepper.
