Here are some *hopefully* helpful tips from yours truly to keep in mind while planning your wine-tasting trip from Seattle.

• ⏰ Book as soon as you can: While I’m also one to procrastinate, I recommend booking or at least reserving a ✨ refundabl e tour ✨ you’re interested. These tours fill up fast, and if your travel dates don’t work out or something comes up, you can cancel 24 before the tour and get a refund!
• 📝 Write down your requests: If you have any dietary restrictions or want to tour a specific winery, make sure to write that down as you make your reservation! Most tour guides will do their best to accommodate you!
• 🥾 Wear Closed-Toed Shoes: Between the fickle weather and the possibility of walking on uneven ground (guaranteed if you’re visiting Snoqualmie Falls), be sure to wear comfortable, close-toed shoes! No one wants to start the day with a fall!

• ☔️ Dress for rain or shine! As mentioned above, the weather can change on a dime, I recommend bringing sunglasses, a hat, sunscreen, a light rain jacket (at least), and maybe a good travel-sized umbrella !
• 💸 Small Cash: I recommend bringing $10 – $20 USD to tip your tour guide(s). That said, if you don’t have small cash on you, you can likely Venmo, Zelle, or Cash App. That’s what I did when I had an amazingly charismatic guide for the Underground Tour of Seattle and had no small bills on me! 🙂

It’s no secret that Seattle isn’t the cheapest or most budget-friendly destination to visit. And after looking at some of the tours, you may be thinking, “Holy crap, some of these tours are expensive! I can’t afford this!” Unfortunately, some of the wine-tasting experiences may indeed be out of your budget. But, that doesn’t mean that you can’t do an independent wine-tasting tour around Seattle! Below, I’ll detail two ways I would recommend going about this.

Wine Tasting With a Rental Car

The first option is to rent a car . Public transportation from the city to the wineries in Woodinville is limited, making a car the most convenient mode of transport. I recommend doing this with Discover Cars as that’s what I’ve had positive experiences with and they offer convenient pick-up options from Sea-Tac Airport. Now, let’s say you can’t get a rental car or simply don’t want to go through the rental process. Another option is to do a little wine tour within Seattle itself… This isn’t ideal since you won’t get to roam around the vineyards that exist outside the metropolitan area. But, there are a couple of cellars and tasting rooms available that are close enough to the downtown area, which is nothing to turn up your nose to. You can find these tasting rooms around SODO, which is about 10 minutes South of downtown Seattle.

Specific places I recommend checking out are Rotie Cellars and Latta Wines ! These are both pretty highly rated and you’ll find a wide array of wines offered there. Also, if you purchase a bottle from Rotie Cellars, they’ll give you a tasting for free, which is always welcomed :’). Another spot to check out in the area is Slight of Hand Cellars . It’s newer and has a fun ambiance that mixes wine and music. Just beware, the wine-tasting experience is on the pricier side, but I’ve heard that most people say it’s worth it!

Snoqualmie Falls & Seattle Winery Tour

This all day wine tour near Seattle is the perfect option if you want to fit in things besides wine tasting. You’ll be picked up from your Sea-Tac Airport or Seattle hotel between 9:15 AM – 10:15 AM so you can depart for Snoqualmie Falls at 10:30 AM.

You’ll drive from Seattle through the Cascade Mountains to the majestic 268-foot tall falls for photo opps before heading toward Woodinville, a wine destination about 30 minutes east of Seattle. On your way you’ll stop at Boehms Candies, a candy factory built like a Swiss chalet with pretty grounds. After you shop to your heart’s content, you’ll head to the wineries.

Once in Woodinville wine country your first stop will be at award-winning wine behemoth Chateau Ste. Michelle. They produce millions of bottles of wines per year and own multiple sub winery brands, so they know what they’re doing. Here you’ll enjoy excellent wines on the most beautiful grounds. They also sell food items perfect for a picnic.

Next you’ll head to a secret smaller winery. You’ll taste here before heading back to your pickup point in Seattle.

What’s not included: Tasting fees at the wineries, pick up from the cruise terminal, lunch, or gratuity. This tour is also not wheelchair accessible and may be canceled if there’s inclement weather.

Bon Vivant Woodinville Wine Tasting Tour

Take a custom tour with professionally wine educated tour guides. They’ll pick you up from your home or hotel in an air conditioned bus for a 10:30 AM tour start time. They’ll chat with your group about their wine preferences and take you to wineries that fit what the group tour is looking for based on their insider knowledge.

The itinerary will start at a a flagship winery before heading to a boutique winery. Next you’ll get lunch at a local cafe before heading to 2-3 more wineries, depending on how quickly the group moves. If you’d like to learn more about wine and geek out with local wine lovers, this is probably one of the best wine tours in the Seattle area for you!

What’s not included: Winery tasting fees or lunch. This tour is also not wheelchair accessible.

Hike Mt. Rainier & Taste Yakima Valley Wine

If you’re hoping to squeeze in a day trip to Mount Rainier from Seattle , this is the full day wine tour for you. You’ll get picked up from your downtown Seattle location at 7:30 AM to make the approximately 2.5 hour drive in an air conditioned bus to Mount Rainier National Park. Since this wine tasting tour only allows a maximum of 10 guests, you can get to know your fellow wine tasters or sit back and nap until you arrive.

Once at the park you’ll take an easy 3-mile hike with a naturalist guide. They’ll point out plants and animals, and you may even get to nibble on some berries! Make sure to wear comfortable shoes, bring water, and wear sunscreen and layers. It may be cold while exploring the best hikes at Mt. Rainier National Park !

After your hike you’ll head Washington Wine Country where you’ll find rows upon rows of vineyards and get to experience where Washington grapes are grown. Your first stop will be at Wilridge Vineyard, Winery & Distillery for a tasting. Lunch and all tasting fees are included in the price. So you don’t have to think about anything except which bottles you want to take home. After Wildridge you’ll go to Owen Roe Winery for another tasting. Then on your way home you’ll stop at Lake Keechelus Trailhead to stretch your legs before being dropped off at your pickup point.

What’s not included: Gratuities. This is also a 21 years old and over activity and is not wheelchair accessible.

Bainbridge Island Winery Tour & Dinner

Bainbridge Island wineries are some of my favorites. Plus, the island makes for an epic day trip from Seattle, so this day tour is just perfect. You’ll meet your group in downtown Bainbridge and visit 3-4 boutique wineries. You’ll meet the winemakers and may even get a chance to try wine from the barrel!

During your wine tasting excursion you’ll be treated to a gourmet dinner included in the price of your winery tour. You’ll also get to take home a souvenir wine glass to remember all the memories you made trying the interesting grapes grown on the island that you won’t find anywhere else!

What’s not included: Transportation from Seattle. You must take the ferry yourself to Bainbridge Island, but it’s easy. The ferry departs from downtown Seattle and only takes 35 minutes. You can walk to the wine tour departure point from the ferry. I outline everything you need to know about the ferry in my guide to spending one day on Bainbridge Island .

Also note this wine tasting tour is not wheelchair accessible. It’s also non-refundable, so make sure you can attend before you book!

Seattle Wine and Chocolate Experience

Explore historic Pioneer Square on one of the few Seattle wine tours that never leaves the city. You’ll meet in Pioneer Square at 2 PM and your guide will share the history of the beautiful cobblestone streets and brick buildings of this charming area of Seattle.

You’ll stop at Browne Family Vineyards and Locus Wines, one of my favorite Seattle wineries . All wine tastes are included in your tour price. You’ll also get charcuterie from Salumi, a famous meat shop in Seattle, and small bites made by the chef co-owner at Locus Wines. If you want a more all-inclusive tasting experience, this is one of the best wine tours in the Seattle area for you.

Between stops you’ll visit Intrigue Chocolate Co., one of the best Seattle chocolate makers . Here you’ll get to learn how chocolate is made and how to taste chocolate like a professional.

While this specific winery tour doesn’t have any reviews on Viator where you can book, it’s run by Show Me Seattle, which hosts other tours around Seattle and is well reviewed on TripAdvisor with 4.5 stars out of 1,686 reviews at time of writing this.

The 6 Best Wineries in (and Near) Seattle

A city that’s known for rain is not the first place you’d think of for award-winning wines, but the Seattle Metropolitan area is one of the only areas in the country where you can find skyscrapers and a plethora of wine-tasting rooms within easy distance of each other. 

I’ve been to dozens of wineries and tasting rooms across the region and compiled six of the best options that are within driving distance from Seattle. Whether you’re looking for something in the city, a great option for food and wine, or a budget-conscious winery, I’ve picked out unique experiences for wine fans of all types.

The Background On Washington Wines

While Western Washington may be known for its milder temperatures, the desert-like climate of eastern Washington makes this the 2nd best-growing region in the United States for wine grape production.  The hot summers, and rich soils, are the ideal environment needed for the red wine grapes to fully ripen and deliver the fruity notes, and subtitle tannins that should be present in a well-made Syrah.  You won’t find notes of Jolly Ranchers in your wines here.

Although Washington wines are primarily produced in Eastern Washington, many winemakers have moved production to the Seattle Metro area to be closer to their customer base.  Many of those who’ve kept their production in eastern Washington still open a tasting room near their competitors in the Seattle Metro area to partake in the direct-to-customer market.  Making Seattle the best Metro area for quality wine tasting in the country.

1. The Best Winery in Seattle Proper: EFESTE

When wine tasting in Seattle proper, Sodo Urbanworks tends to draw the most attention.  This business park has congregated multiple tasting rooms creating an urban wine utopia.  Located 1.4 miles North of this cluster, EFESTE winery has opened an urban tasting room to draw in those who desire to sip in the shadow of the city.

EFESTE’s been a part of the Washington wine scene since 2007, and proved their ability to continue to produce quality wines while their popularity has grown. Their Final Final Red Blend has become well known around Washington as a dependable wine and can be regularly found in restaurants on wine menus around the region. Syrah drinkers will love their Jolie Bouch, and for Cab enthusiasts, your mouth will water over the Big Papa. White wine drinkers will appreciate the Penelope Roussane or the Lola Chardonnay.

2. The Best Winery to Spend the Afternoon: Januik Winery

• Address: 14710 Redmond – Woodinville Rd NE, Woodinville, WA 98072
• Area: Woodinville
• Distance from Downtown: 18 miles (About a 30 minute drive)

Wine tasting is not a quick event. Most people see this as a group activity with the wine being an excuse to get together, rarely the purpose.  Often groups can spend hours sitting and chatting in one location without thought of moving on to the next.  If that sounds like your intentions, then head to Januik Winery in the Hollywood District of Woodinville.

Januik has built a large production facility that doubles as an event venue.  Not only do they have an extensive wine menu, where you are sure to find at least one wine you will enjoy, but you’ll find food and entertainment to keep your group happy as well. On weekends their catering kitchen whips up Neapolitan-style pizzas for a small fee to go along with your wines of choice.  Have a seat on their outside patio in the summer and play a round of bocce ball while you sip and chat away the afternoon.  Kids are welcome, but feel free to hire a babysitter for some adult time.

3. Best Winery for Food and Wine: Maryhill Winery

• Distance from Downtown: 20 miles (About a 30 minute drive)

More wineries are embracing their customer’s desire to enjoy their wines onsite with other fellow wine lovers.  Not with a quick tasting, but to sit and relax with a glass (or two).  Maybe buy a bottle and split it among friends.  Which naturally has led to the offering of snacks at many establishments. A few have taken this above and beyond.

Located in the historic Hollywood School House, Maryhill Winery has been getting quite the reputation for their food offerings.  While they have a standard offering of your typical charcuterie plate, you’ll also find they have a full kitchen to serve mouth-watering creations. The kitchen changes up the menu seasonally to keep things fresh and keep you coming back for more. While snacks and appetizers such as baked brie and fish cakes are available, those looking for a full meal can also get full-size salads and sandwiches to keep your energy up during the flurry of wines coming at you.

4. Best Winery for Rare Wines: Covington & Two Vintners at the Vault in Maltby

• Address:  9206 200th St SE STE C, Snohomish, WA 98296
• Area: Maltby
• Distance from Downtown: 30 miles (About a 30 to 40 minute drive)

Most people are familiar with wine blends such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Chardonnay.  However not many have had the pleasure of tasting a Cinsault or Grenache Blanc.  The world of wines is vast, but most winemakers stick to only a few well know varietals as recognition sells.  However just because something is well-known doesn’t mean it’s the best.  For those who are new to wine and thinking perhaps wine isn’t for you, perhaps you just haven’t tasted the right wine yet?

Enter Morgan Lee, wine enthusiast, and winemaker of Covington Cellars and Two Vintners Winery.   Morgan has a passion for introducing the world to great wines and isn’t afraid to take on some of the lesser-known varietals he feels the world should know more about.  Covington Cellars began first, focusing primarily on Bordeaux styles wines.  Covington quickly became a success and so a collaboration began between the owners of Covington and Morgan to open Two Vintners, a new label of creative freedom for Morgan to develop wines of less renown, but deserving of your devotion. Two Vintners recently opened a new tasting room in The Vault at Maltby, but you can still visit them in their original location in the Warehouse District of Woodinville as well.  Covington Cellars is located next to Two Vintners in the Warehouse District of Woodinville.

5. Best Winery on a Budget: Newsprint at Guardian Cellars

• Distance from Downtown: 25 miles (About a 30 minute drive)

It often happens that winemakers will find themselves with too much product.  In order to ensure they have enough quality products for the wines their customers have come to expect from them, they must overproduce/purchase in case some products didn’t turn out right.  Winemakers have a couple of choices of what to do with their excess product.  First, they can sell it to other winemakers, usually at a discount.  This is how cheap bottles of wine like Two Buck Chuck are made.  Their second option is to make more wine and sell it under a new name or label.  This is a common story I’ve heard over the years when visiting wineries as to how their second label came about.

One such label is Newsprint. You’ll find Newsprint at Guardian Cellars.  This is no second-class wine. Although the price point of these wines may be more affordable, the winemaker pours just as much love into these wines as he does his better-known Guardian label.  On at least two visits to their tasting room when expressing my appreciation for this label, I’ve been met with excitement from the winemaker as he talked about how particularly proud he was of how well one of the wines had turned out ( although they all were good of course )!  The Newsprint Red Blend retails for just $18, which in the world of wine is really a great deal! Guardian has tasting rooms in both the Hollywood and Warehouse District of Woodinville.  If you can’t make your way to Woodinville, try the wine section at the local QFC and Metropolitan Market Grocery Stores as these have a section for local wines and often carry the Newsprint and Guardian labels.

Honorable mention has to be given to Darby Winery for their Purple Haze.  The Purple Haze has grown in reputation and even has its own wine club, yet the price has held at just $20 a bottle. This is a great wine for a gift, or just to drink yourself.  Darby Winery is found in the Hollywood District of Woodinville.

6. Best for Wine Aficionados: Pepper Bridge Winery

• Address:  14810 NE 145th Street | Building A-3 Woodinville, WA 98072
• Distance from Downtown: 20 miles (About a 30 to 40 minute drive)

While Washington is best known for labels such as Leonetti, Woodward Canyon, Quilceda Creek, and Cayuse, you won’t find tasting rooms for these wineries in or around Seattle.  There’s good news though for those hoping to find a wine able to please a more refined pallet.  You won’t need to drive to Walla Walla to meet your expectations.

Although their wine list is small, Pepper Bridge Winery makes up for their lack of variety in quality.  Primarily focused on creating craft quality wines, Pepper Bridge delivers for those looking for a taste of what wine should taste like when done to perfection. Expect to love their Cabs, and hopefully, you will find a new favorite in the Trine. While the tasting fee is standard for this area, should you want to take a bottle home, expect to pay $70+.  Quality comes with a cost, and while this is my top choice, this is not the most expensive wine you’ll find in the area.  Price is one part quality, and two parts demand.  Pepper Bridge Winery is located in the Hollywood District of Woodinville.  

Where to Find Wine Tasting In and Around Seattle

Wine production in the Seattle area began in the suburbs in the city of Woodinville.  You’ll find the majority of tasting rooms still located within the boundaries of Woodinville.  The “Hollywood District”, which has become the primary area for most well-known wineries, is located a short 30-minute drive from downtown Seattle.  However, for those unable to travel due to time or logistical limitations, some entrepreneurial wineries have established a small grouping of tasting rooms within the SODO region of Seattle itself.

A Note On Sampling Washington Wines

I’ve lived in Washington for the majority of my life and so naturally, living near this region of wine gurus, my indoctrination into wine culture began long before I was an adult. The wine community in Washington is connected and can be like a close nit family.  I’ve been fortunate to be introduced to quite a few winemakers over the years.  Once they see you share their passion for wine, many winemakers love to spend time chatting about their process, and I’ve been privileged to numerous private tours and barrel tastings.  Which eventually lead me to pursue formal education in the wine process.

Yet for all my experience and education, the one lesson I’ve learned is there is no magic words you can say to make someone like a wine. It doesn’t matter how many awards a wine has won, if the grapes were grown and produced to perfection, or who has recommended it. People like what they like, and what you like today is not what you will like tomorrow.  In fact, the primary reason people will buy a bottle of wine at a tasting room is not because they liked the wine, but because they enjoyed their experience while there! 

It makes sense though. If you wanted the best bottle of wine, you would have gone to a wine shop and asked for a recommendation.  If you’re visiting wine tasting rooms, you’re not dedicating half a day to visiting a small sampling of what Seattle’s wine scene has to offer and expecting to find the next 99-point diamond in the rough.  You’re looking for an experience. So with that in mind, I hope you’ve found some recommendations that find interesting and that you enjoy your next wine adventure in Seattle!

12 Washington Wineries Near Seattle for a Great Day Trip

When we decided to visit friends in Seattle, we knew we wanted to get out to experience several Washington wineries.

At first, we had our hearts set on hitting a proper wine region like those found in the Columbia Valley towards the eastern side of the state. But we quickly scrapped that plan when we found out that many wineries in Washington are not estate operated- that is to say, wine producers typically do not grow their own grapes.

While this is not always the case, we found that tasting rooms in proper wine regions are few and far between- so much so that planning a visit seemed a bit too daunting. There are fields upon fields of grapes, naturally, but when it comes to trying the final products at proper tasting rooms, we weren't quite sure if it made sense for us given how far of a drive the region is from Seattle.

As it turns out, many of the most well-known wineries in the state are actually based in the greater Seattle metro area! These wineries typically buy their grapes directly from vineyards all over the state but ferment, package, bottle, sell, and pour samples at their tasting rooms much closer to the city.

So we decided to stick close to Seattle and hit up a dozen wineries in nearby Woodinville, Bainbridge Island, and even within the city limits of Seattle proper and we quickly found out how much the region loves Rhone and Bordeaux varietals outright!

Wineries in Woodinville

Woodinville is what we think of as a classic wine-tasting city and is located just about 45 minutes from Seattle! There are well over 100 wineries in Woodinville, and most of them are accessible within a five to ten-minute drive of each other. Some are even located in the same building complex, meaning you could taste your way around a few simply by foot!

The only difference between here and other major wine regions? There are no grapes to be found (well, outside of some decorative vines).

Still, with such a large concentration of highly rated wineries, we knew we had to make a trip to find the best tasting rooms in Woodinville, and were able to check out eight great spots in two day trips from Seattle!

DeLille Cellars

DeLille Cellars was our first winery in Woodinville, and really set the stage for the experiences to come. This modern and elegant tasting room came with a wine flight of five wines that were inspired by the French regions of Bordeaux and the Rhone. But where other wineries may focus on just one or two grapes that come out of these regions (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah specifically), DeLille had a more robust and varied offering of whites and reds that went just a bit beyond others we visited.

Wines like the Chaleur Blanc (Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon) and Roofline (Pinot Noir) offered great counterpoints to the more traditional D2 (right bank Bordeaux that was primarily Merlot-based) and Minuit (an interesting Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon blend). Our only regret here is that some of our favorite grapes, like Syrah, were sold out so we were unable to try them entirely. So, naturally, we left with a bottle of the delightful Chaleur Blanc and was one of the only Sauvignon Blancs we picked up during our entire trip. Don't miss it!

DeLille Cellars is located at 14300 NE 145th St Suite 101 in Woodinville.

Out of all of the wineries in Seattle that we visited, Efeste had perhaps the widest selection of varietals overall. Think whites like Chardonnay, Roussane, Riesling, Chenin Blanc, and more; a rose; and reds running the spectrum from blends to pure varietal Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Grenache, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and more.

As such, while they may make their wine in similar styles to those from other wineries, you'll truly have a lot to take in here. Thankfully, their tasting flight contains six pours of wine which during our visit included the Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, right bank Bordeaux blend (Merlot heavy with Cab), Roussane, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon- a varied menu that we certainly appreciated as a cross-section of the winery's portfolio (naturally, we left with a Syrah).

Beyond this, they also have food available including small plates, charcuterie, and even an on-site pizza oven. Truly this is the kind of place you can go with a group, stay a bit for the food, and enjoy all without knowing anything else going into it. They have something to please everyone!

Efeste is located at 19730 144th Avenue NE in Woodinville. They also have a tasting room at 1730 1st Ave S in Seattle proper. 

One of the things we liked the best about our tasting experience at Avennia, apart from the ambiance at large, is that they have a wide portfolio that gives nods to traditional grapes grown both in Bordeaux and the Rhone regions of France. As others tend to focus on primarily Bordeaux styles or primarily Rhone styles in their portfolio, having a healthy mix of both here gave us much more to appreciate.

Furthermore, the offering of signature and reserve tasting flights here ensured we could get a nice broad view of their offering as well, including their Syrah, GSM, white Rhone blends, Sauvignon Blanc, Cab, Bordeaux blends, and more. So whether you favor Bordeaux, Rhone, or enjoy everything equally, you really can get a nice appreciation for this winery's delightful spread here. Although, naturally, we walked away with a Syrah and Grenache as we quickly realized how well Washington does in mimicking the style of this famous region!

Avennia is located at 19255 Woodinville Snohomish Rd #1 in Woodinville.

Matthews (Tenor and Jaine)

Matthews Winery is located in a combined space with the wineries Tenor and Jaine respectively and was arguably our favorite tasting room experience in Washington.

The reason for this is that the tasting experience lets you have any four wines from the three producers, which, when visiting with friends, allowed us to seriously taste our way through the menu. Matthews shined for their Bordeaux-inspired blends (try one of the Clarets), Tenor focuses purely on single varietal bottles (try the Syrah), and Jaine fills in the gaps with a strong white and rose program as well (the rose here was among the finest we've ever had).

As other wineries we visited only offered a single producer in concepts similar to these, having three available in a single tasting experience really helped us open things up a bit without locking our entire flight into one style of wine. A real gem- if you can stomach some of the bottle prices at least!

Matthews Winery (plus Tenor and Jaine) is located at 16116 140th Pl NE in Woodinville.

Amavi Cellars (Pepper Bridge)

Amavi is a smaller tasting room in Woodinville that shares its space with Pepper Bridge. Amavi's limited wine portfolio has a near-even split between pure varietal and blended Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlots (ala Bordeaux) as well as a few Syrahs (ala the Rhone).  We, naturally, gravitated to the Syrah offerings at this one but appreciated how approachable and perhaps even a bit informal the wine tasting experience here was- even if we did need reservations outright.

Amavi Cellars (plus Pepper Bridge) is located at 14810 NE 145th St A3 in Woodinville.

Chateau St Michelle

If there is one Washington winery you likely are well aware of, it is probably Chateau St. Michelle. It is the largest wine producer in the state, and its tasting room in Woodinville is among the most ornate and elaborate we went to. The ambiance here was truly second to none and the main tasting room included several bar areas, an on-site kitchen, and more.

We, admittedly, did not do Chateau St. Michelle justice as this was one of the wineries we visited without an appointment. Those who reserve in advance have an array of tasting experiences at their disposal from the winery's vast catalog, but walk-ins are limited to sampling just a few bottles that are pouring that day outright.

As such, I have to admit that the experience here was more or less a letdown (of our own doing mind you), but is still an obligatory stop all the same thanks to this one's size and popularity. Next time, we'll reserve and do a more robust tasting of the higher-end wines available!

Chateau St. Michelle is located at 14111 NE 145th St in Woodinville.

Gorman Cellars

Gorman Cellars was one of just a few wineries in this guide we were able to visit without a reservation, and quickly after arriving at their Woodinville tasting room we recognized that this one was different. First, there was the ambiance as the interior of Gorman Cellars is covered with guitars and rock memorabilia (the owner is a big fan, clearly) and the outside was set up with tables under a misting station to cool off on a hot day!

Much like other Washington vineyards, Gorman has ample selections of Bordeaux and Northern Rhone-style wines but also rounded out their portfolio with some GSM blends like those from the Southern Rhone, Chardonnay, and more. In fact, it was The Big Sissy Chardonnay that left the biggest impression on us at it had a perfect balance of oak and malolactic fermentation- both prominent but not too overdone that it masked all the fruit flavors outright (like is done aggressively in some Napa vineyards ). In fact, it reminded us of one of our favorite Chardonnays from Hamilton Russell (South Africa) and naturally, we had to leave with one!

Gorman Cellars is located at 14505 148th Ave NE in Woodinville. 

Novelty Hill (Januik)

During our visit to Novelty Hill, we were offered pours from a set tasting flight which changes regularly. As such, while we didn't get to pick the grapes we were able to try, our server did offer us a splash of a few others after the fact to help us try more of their portfolio.

If there was any tasting experience in Washington that I would say I was let down by, it would honestly be this one. Not because the wines were bad, far from it actually (they really know their stuff here), but rather that our tasting flight was almost entirely Cabernet Sauvignon-based. Yes, almost every single wine poured on the two tasting flights on the day of our visit were Bordeaux-inspired and Cab heavy. A good problem for those who like it, but it honestly felt like it wasn't a great representation of the winery's portfolio at large (they're indeed Cab heavy, but not that Cab heavy ).

What ended up happening here for us was that we found ourselves enjoying the wines we had in quick splashes at the end just a bit more as Cabernet Sauvignon, by in large, has never been a favorite grape for us. So we picked up a few non-Cabernet bottles to take home and hope for the best all the same.

We have to admit that this one was entirely the luck of the draw. From talking to our servers we were told the tasting menu changes often, and ours was so new they were still getting used to the wines on the list. So your mileage may vary here completely depending on how frequent the wines are changed. As such, we'd still recommend a visit to this one whether you are a Cab fan or not, but those who love this grape more so will get the most out of the experience if their flight is anything like ours.

Novelty Hill (plus Januik) is located at 14710 Woodinville – Redmond Rd NE in Woodinville.

Wineries in Bainbridge Island

Bainbridge Island is a great day trip spot from Seattle as it is located a short ferry ride across Elliott Bay and the Puget Sound from the city. All you have to do is get in line early, drive your car on the ferry, enjoy the scenery from the ~30-minute crossing, and then head out for a day of exploring.

Naturally, as this is popular for both locals and tourists alike, it shouldn't be surprising that a few wineries can be found on the island as well- many just around the corner from the ferry terminal outright!

We will admit that we did not head to the island with the intention of checking out wineries outright, but we ended up hitting two all the same.

Eagle Harbor Winery

We stopped at Eagle Harbor Winery after exploring Bainbridge Island and immediately felt like we were part of the family. The staff here were quite friendly and open to pouring wines based on whatever we selected from the menu (as opposed to set flight lists which were common virtually everywhere else) plus a few bonus splashes at the end for good measure.

Out of all of the wineries we visited, we got the most explanation of the wines here first hand from our server as opposed to only really reading about them on the tasting sheet or brief introductions as the flights came out in total. This allowed for a much more robust conversation where we learned more about how they acquire grapes from all over the state. While this one is decidedly a Bordeaux-inspired vineyard (expect numerous Cab and Merlot wines), we appreciated that they had Super Tuscan blends and Sangiovese on the menu as well.

Our only regret was that some of the super-premium options here were pushing $50-$80, and were a bit outside of the price we were willing to spend to take more bottles home with us. Alas, we enjoyed the experience here in a holistic sense all the same as the team truly made the experience a unique one!

Eagle Harbor Winery is located at 8897 Three Tree Ln NE as well as 278 Winslow Way E #106 on Bainbridge Island. We visited the former. 

Eleven Winery

We visited Eleven Winery a bit on a whim as we killed time before the return ferry to Seattle (a bit like Eagle Harbor, above). During our visit to the winery's city tasting room, we were presented with options of basic flights or reserve flights- naturally, we went with the latter.

The wines in the Reserve menu ran the spectrum including Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, and Viognier as well as Mourvedre two ways- one as a white (unconventional) and one as red (traditional). While we generally enjoyed all of the wines in the flight, the white Mourvedre is what jumped out at us the most. It is described almost as a rose in nature, but the bottle we enjoyed was devoid of any pink tints whatsoever but with rose characteristics like apricot, grapefruit, and lighter red fruits. A simply delightful find that we had to buy a bottle of to take home!

Eleven Winery is located at 7671 NE Day Rd W and 287 Winslow Way E in Bainbridge. We visited the latter.

Wineries in Seattle Proper

Finally, we come to the wineries in Seattle itself. Prior to visiting, we didn't actually realize the city had wineries within it outright, and it was only until after having a stellar bottle from Latta Wines that we found out it was produced within the city limits!

In fact, the complex where this particular winery can be found is home to a half dozen or so producers so while we visited for one, we ended up checking out two!

Latta Wines

We stumbled upon Latta Wines purely by chance. It came about when we were heading out to a nice dinner with friends and we went to a local wine shop to buy a bottle for dinner as the corkage fee at said restaurant was much cheaper than the wine markup they had on their bottles. We wanted a Grenache from Washington, found Latta Wines Upland Vineyard, saw it had great reviews, and off we went.

It was incredible. In fact, we later found out that Snipes Mountain, where Upland Vineyard is located, is one of the most sought-after producing regions in the state and is known to make some of the best Grenache anywhere. We truly believed it and knew we had to find the tasting room for this one right away.

As it turns out, Latta Wines is located in Seattle proper on the south side of the city. During our visit, we learned that they are primarily a Rhone producer and have an impressive spread of red and white wines from North and Southern Rhone plus other grapes like Malbec, Roussanne, Mourvedre, and more. True to form, we left this one with more bottles of Upland Vineyard's Grenache as well as their Syrah, because why mess with perfection when it is in reach? If you like these grapes, don't miss this one.

Latta Wines is located at   3933 1st Ave S in Seattle proper.

Rotie Cellars

Rotie Cellars was another winery we went to purely on a whim and was added to our hit list purely because it was located just 30 seconds away from Latta Wines on foot. We asked our host at Latta what winery in the complex she recommended best (as there were several) and Rotie Cellars came up on the list.

If you haven't guessed that we  love Rhone wines by now, you should not be shocked that a winery named after one of the most renowned Syrah producing regions in the Northern Rhone got our attention, and after learning they also only specialize in Rhone wines, off we went.

As you should expect, the Syrah here was the star of the day with the single varietal bottle and rose of Syrah being two of the favorites that we left with bottles of. The GSM-inspired blends were smooth and enjoyable, and our only regret was that they were out of the Grenache Blanc and we could not try it. All things being equal, for a winery that we stumbled upon simply by being next door, we'd add this one on our hit-list again as it was quite delicious.

Rotie Cellars is located at 3861 1st Ave S Suite F in Seattle proper.

The iconic Ukrainian Diner Veselka, open in the East Village since 1954, has new signage up at 646 Lorimer Street, near the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, in Williamsburg. The family behind the restaurant, Justin and Jason Birchard, say the restaurant will open in May. The 4,000-square-foot building was constructed as a garage in 1918 and recently operated as a car wash . Veselka signed a 48-year lease on the property last year . The opening will mark the first time the Ukrainian restaurant has operated in Brooklyn; in addition to the original diner in the East Village, there is another location in Grand Central .

For a day, pizza costs a dollar again

Remember the dollar slice? On Thursday, April 18, dozens of New York pizza makers will come together and sell their slices — margherita, plain, and coal-oven — for a buck each. The event at St. Anthony’s Church (155 Sullivan Street, near Houston Street) is a fundraiser started by Scott Wiener of Scott’s Pizza Tours for local group Slice Out Hunger . Participants can purchase $1 tickets at the event and exchange them for a slice, a drink, or a dessert. This year’s lineup includes Di Fara Pizza, John’s of Bleecker Street, Don Antonio, and others.

Hand Hospitality is opening a new restaurant

Odre, a new concept from the prolific restaurant group, Hand Hospitality — Her Name is Han, Ariari, Seoul Salon, Cho Dang Gol — has signed on a new spot in the East Village. It’s heading for 199 Second Avenue, near East 13th Street, this summer, a spokesperson confirms. Odre will serve an under $50 per person, four-course prix-fixe restaurant; it’s the first Hand spot led by chef Changki Kang, an alum of the Michelin-starred Seoul restaurant, Onjium (which now has a Manhattan outpost ). Think: seasonally changing dishes like summer squash shrimp jeon and oysters with pear and sea cucumber. — Emma Orlow, reporter

An Ops alum has a new wine shop

Haley Burke, one of three owners of Colors , a new wine shop near the Brooklyn Navy Yard, says it's a homecoming, having grown up nearby. Burke, who is overseeing managing and buying for Colors, has worked at Bushwick pizzeria, Ops, known for its wine list, and Ridgewood wine shop, Foret , among other spots. It opened in March, at 138 Flushing Avenue, near Vanderbilt Avenue, replacing Navy Wine Merchants, which first opened in 2017. — Emma Orlow, reporter
