How to use Safari's Picture-in-Picture mode with YouTube on macOS
Introduced in macOS Sierra, Picture-in-Picture mode for Safari allows users to pop a video out from a webpage and onto the Mac desktop. The floating and resizable window hovers above other applications, keeping it in view while other applications are kept usable in the background.
While it is easily available in apps, including iTunes, as well as some websites, it is oddly not immediately accessible when viewing YouTube, arguably one of the biggest video services online. YouTube does support Picture-in-Picture for Safari, but there's a trick to actually using it.
Starting YouTube Picture-in-Picture
Open Safari . It is not currently possible to use the Picture-in-Picture feature with other browsers, not even Google Chrome considering this tip deals with YouTube.
Open a YouTube video that you wish to view. At this point it can be paused or left to continue playing.
Right-click on the middle of the video. This brings up YouTube's contextual menu which, while interesting, should not be used for the moment.
Immediately right-click the middle of the video again. This second right-click brings up a Safari menu, which includes the option we need.
Click Enter Picture in Picture . This will move the video from the browser out into its own floating panel.
Using Picture-in-Picture
The video panel can be moved around the screen by clicking and dragging it to a different corner. If you hold the Command key down, you can drag it to a specific point of your screen instead of a corner.
The size of the panel can be adjusted by dragging the edges or the corner to make it larger or smaller. At most, the panel can be resized to take up a quarter of the screen.
The playback controls on the website will still work as normal, but there are also basic controls on the video panel itself, shown by mousing over the picture.
To exit the mode, click the X symbol in the top left corner of the video panel, or by clicking the symbol next to the play button in the panel to replace it in the page. You can also right-click the webpage as before and select Exit Picture in Picture .
Further Notes
Websites have to enable Picture-in-Picture mode for it to work, but not every site does so. For example, while Vimeo is more direct in offering the feature by openly displaying a PiP button, there is currently no way to use the function with video from Netflix nor Amazon Prime Instant Video.

Apple’s latest MacOS Big Sur beta brings 4K YouTube to Safari
If you’re a fan of the Safari web browser on your Mac, Apple just gave YouTube video playback a major upgrade in its latest macOS beta release. Now available for download , developers on the macOS Big Sur beta 4 can finally playback YouTube videos in 4K UHD resolution using Apple’s Safari browser.
Apple published details about the feature change in its Big Sur beta 4 documentation, noting that the software brings “support for 4K HDR playback of YouTube videos” in Safari and Webkit.

Prior to today’s release, YouTube video was capped at just 1080p FHD resolution when using Safari. This meant that if you wanted to play YouTube videos at resolutions greater than FHD, you had to choose an alternate browser, like Google’s Chrome. If all goes well during Apple’s beta testing period, Big Sur is expected to be released this fall for all consumers.
This change is especially notable given Apple’s push for higher resolution displays in recent years with Retina Displays appearing on smartphones, tablets, and the Mac. This means that if you own Apple’s iMac with Retina 4K Display, iMac with Retina 5K Display , iMac Pro with Retina 5K Display, or Apple’s studio-grade Pro Display XDR panel with a Retina 6K Display, you can edit and playback YouTube videos in resolutions up to 4K .
Initially announced earlier this summer at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference event, macOS Big Sur introduced a number of new features , including new icons, an updated menu bar, redesigned sheets, and a refreshed Notification Center — changes that will helps to unify Apple’s desktop macOS operating system with its mobile iOS and iPad OS platforms. In fact, Apple views the changes introduced with Big Sur significant enough to warrant a numerical jump to its macOS platform, moving from macOS 10 for desktops — which was initially introduced in 2001 — to macOS 11.
Big Sur is also the first operating system that kicks off Apple’s support for its own custom in-house silicon as Apple moves away from Intel. As Apple transitions to ARM-based processors for its Mac, we can likely expect to see Apple port over more features from its mobile platforms.
If you want to give Big Sur a spin ahead of its commercial release, you can begin by enrolling your Mac in Apple’s software preview program . However, before you do that, be sure to read Apple’s documentation for the latest beta release to see what problems or issues you may encounter during testing. Although Apple announced that Big Sur will be coming to supported Macs this fall, the company did not give a specific launch date.

MacOS 14 is coming and coming soon, and thanks to Apple's big keynote address at WWDC 2023, we now know what it can do, what it's called, and who can get it. The next generation Mac operating system is codenamed Sonoma, and it's bringing gaming to macOS in a big way, as well as improving video calls, and security. It's going to be available for most modern Mac and MacBook users, but there are some legacy systems that are unfortunately being left out in the cold.
Wondering if your Mac can get macOS 14? Here's everything we know about what Macs are and aren't compatible with Sonoma.
Appleâs Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) was chock-full of new announcements, and itâs fair to say that between the Vision Pro headset and all of Appleâs new Macs, macOS was far from the biggest new reveal. Yet, there was one new macOS feature that could be absolutely game-changing.
Thatâs because right now, Mac gaming is in a pretty bad way. Gamers donât buy Macs because there arenât enough good games, and developers donât port their games to the Mac because there arenât enough people to play them. Itâs a chicken-and-egg situation caught in a death spiral.

Using Safari, itâs easy to watch a video while doing other things

If you like to work with a music video playing in the background or watch your favorite sports team while perusing social media or maybe if you simply like doing two things at once, picture-in-picture (PiP) can be really useful. It lets you pin a small window showing a video within a larger window on your computer or TV screen.
If youâre using a Mac, you can easily set up PiP for a YouTube video using either Appleâs Safari or Googleâs Chrome browsers as well.
This first time, on how to have PiP on Safari, is courtesy of a great tweet by Ricky Mondello .
PiP using Safari
- Right click twice on the YouTube Video. The first click will get you a menu that lets you copy the URL of the video, embed the code, or do other YouTube-related tasks. The second click will get you a more traditional menu.Â
- Click on âEnter Picture in Picture.â Your video will shrink down to a much smaller size.
- Open a new tab on your browser (or several, if you want) and go to another site â or you can leave the browser entirely. The video will keep playing.Â
- To control the video, hover your cursor over the video. You can pause and restart it, take it out of PiP mode, or close the window entirely.
- To move the small video window around, you can press down with one finger on your touchpad and use the other finger to move the window around your screen. If youâre using a mouse, then use the Command key.
There are a couple of other ways you can start PiP.Â
- While your video is playing, right click on the volume icon in the tab; the menu will include the âEnter Picture in Pictureâ command. (Note: You wonât see the volume icon if you pause the video.)
- If you have a Touch Bar, use the PiP icon (it looks like a small filled-in rectangle over a larger clear rectangle).
PiP using Chrome
After this article was published, a reader wrote me and asked why I hadnât also included the way to do PiP using Googleâs Chrome browser on a Mac. So I did a bit of research and found that you can have PiP on your Mac using Chrome â and it works almost exactly the same way that Safari does, except you can either use the built-in method ( courtesy How-To Geek ) or a Google PiP extension.
Use the built-in feature:
- Right click on the YouTube video you want to make into a PiP
- As with Safari, the first menu youâll get will be YouTubeâs right-click menu. So right click again (outside of the menu). Youâll get a Chrome menu with a âPicture in Pictureâ selection; click on that.
Again, as with Safari, the PiP functionality is pretty basic; you can move the video anywhere around the screen, pause it, and return it to its YouTube window. However, donât expect to get any captions with it; the captions will continue to run on the original YouTube page.
Use Googleâs PiP extension:
There is no perceivable advantage to using the extension over the built-in right-click feature; both give you the same simple (but effective) PiP feature.
- In the Chrome Web Store, find the Picture-in-Picture extension . Click on the âAdd to Chromeâ button.
- You will be asked for permission to âRead and change all your data on the websites you visitâ
- Once the extension is installed, you can access it either by clicking on the new PiP icon to the right of your address field or hitting the option+P keys.
Thatâs it! Enjoy your video.
Update June 23rd, 2020, 10:08AM ET: This article was originally published on December 27th, 2019, and it has been updated to include instructions on PIP in Chrome.

11 Ways to Fix YouTube Not Working or Playing Videos on Safari Browser
Mac users prefer Safari over other browsers because of better system integration with Apple’s ecosystem and privacy features that it offers. Safari is a capable browser that handles everything you throw at it, including playing YouTube videos. However, if YouTube is not working or playing videos on the Safari browser, you can follow these troubleshooting steps to make it run.
Fix YouTube Not Working or Playing Videos on Safari Browser
There could be two issues here. One is that YouTube is not working on Safari at all and the other is where YouTube is not playing videos. It’s about the time you found a solution that fixes your problem.
1. YouTube Is Down
If the problem lies in YouTube servers, you will end up wasting your time if you keep following any suggestions mentioned on this list. In other words, before heading to other solutions, you should know if YouTube’s servers are down or not. It has happened before .
1: To check, you can use a website called Down for Everyone or Just Me . It uses the ‘ping’ method to find whether YouTube is down at your end only or for the whole world.
2: After visiting this website, enter youtube.com in the empty box, and press the Return button.
If it shows It’s just you. youtube.com is up. message on your screen, continue reading try other solutions listed below.
Otherwise, keep waiting until it shows this particular message, which indicates that YouTube isn’t working on Safari for just you.
2. Check Internet Connection
It is recommended to check if you have a good internet connection. If you have some internet connection-related issues, you won’t be able to play YouTube videos in Safari or any browser. To verify if your internet connection is working perfectly, you can use the Terminal app and Ping command.
1: Press Command+Space , type terminal , hit the Return button to open the Terminal app.
2: Enter the following command and press the Return button.
If it shows concurrent positive replies, your internet connection is fine. However, if it shows Request timed out or anything like that, you should call your ISP.
Alternatively, you can try opening a website other than YouTube to check if your internet connection is okay or not. Like many other people, you can enter google.com in the address bar and hit the Return button. If it opens the Google homepage, your internet connection is working fine.
Note: Apart from checking your internet connection, it is also suggested to check the speed . If you do not have a good bandwidth, you might find the same issue while playing a YouTube video.
3. Restart Mac
Restarting a device solves countless minor issues. If Safari has some issue, a simple restart might be able to fix it within moments. Try it.
4. Try Different Browser
To find out if it is a browser-specific problem or not, you should try playing YouTube videos on a different browser. Almost everyone has at least two browsers on his/her Mac. If not, download one and check. You can always uninstall it later if you don’t clutter.
5. Disable VPN
Whether you use a free or paid VPN app , it can make things worse for you. VPNs help you browse the internet anonymously and safely. For that, they route your connection from their servers before you see the content on your computer screen. If the VPN’s server is in the middle of a breakdown, your connection will be much slower than usual. In other words, you may not be able to open YouTube on Safari to watch videos like you usually do. Turn off VPN temporarily to check if YouTube plays videos or not.
6. Disable/Uninstall Extensions
If you are a Safari user, you might have already installed some extensions to increase your productivity. There are extensions for YouTube too. However, YouTube might not load videos on Safari due to an internal conflict between extensions. We recommend you disable all extensions and check if you can play YouTube videos. As Safari loads all installed extensions in the Private Mode, you won’t notice any difference there. Go to Safari > Preferences > Extensions and disable them all.
Uncheck all the checkboxes, close the window, and try opening YouTube.
If it works, it’s time to enable one extension at a time to find the culprit.
7. Remove Ad Blocker Apps for Safari
To get rid of YouTube ads, many people use Adblock extensions, apps, etc., instead of purchasing a YouTube Premium subscription. If you use an adblocker extension on Safari, you might not find this issue. However, the official Mac App Store has some similar apps to excite the users. Although some work, it is recommended to remove such apps before opening a YouTube video next time.
8. Disable Content Blocker
Content Blocker is a Safari-specific feature that helps you allow/disallow specific content from loading on a website. It is supposed to improve the browsing experience by blocking unnecessary content in Safari. However, the same thing can break your experience too. To check, try opening the YouTube website (even if it doesn’t load properly), click on Safari > Settings for This Website and remove the tick from Enable content blockers .
After that, reload the YouTube to check if video works in Safari or not.
9. Clear Cache/Cookies for YouTube
Clearing the cache and cookies might help when there’s a major change in the browser or YouTube. If you are getting out of a malware/adware attack, this trick might be handy for you. Even if you don’t, you should try.
1: Open the Safari browser and click on Safari > Preferences .
2: Switch to the Privacy tab and click the Manage Website Data button.
3: Find youtube.com from the list, select it and click the Remove button.
4: Restart your browser and open YouTube.
10. Enable JavaScript
JavaScript plays a vital role in playing embedded YouTube videos in Safari. If the webpage is broken or showing only text or can’t play YouTube videos, it is better to enable JavaScript. Although Safari enables it by default, you should verify this setting.
1: Open the Safari browser on your Mac and go to Safari > Preferences .
2: Switch to the Security tab, and make a tick in the Enable JavaScript checkbox.
3: Reload the YouTube or webpage where the YouTube video is embedded.
11. Check External Monitor Connection
If an external monitor is connected to Mac and you are getting a blank or black screen, check the monitor connection. Several things are involved in dealing with this problem- the monitor, cable, MacBook’s port, etc.
You should verify if all those things are working and connected properly or not. In case you can’t, it is better to ask a professional for help.
Wrapping Up: YouTube Not Woking in Safari
There are mainly three steps to fix the YouTube not playing videos in Safari browser issue. One, you should verify if YouTube is down or not. Two, check if you have an internet connection issue on your computer. Three, use the browser-based solutions as mentioned above. Altogether, they can fix the issue and let you open YouTube without any problem.

YouTube picture-in-picture works in Safari for Mac with this hidden menu
The ability to watch YouTube using picture-in-picture on the Mac isn’t new , but it’s new to me. Apple added support for native picture-in-picture video to Safari on the Mac way back in 2016, and YouTube has supported it since day one. The option is hidden behind a couple of clicks…
I’ll be the first to admit that most of you reading this probably already know how to activate picture-in-picture mode on YouTube’s website in Safari. For those of you who are like me and have gone over four years without it, this article is for you.
YouTube seems like it wants to hide the option to watch videos in picture-in-picture. As we’ve seen on the iPhone and iPad side of things , YouTube isn’t keen on giving its users the ability to easily watch videos anywhere outside of the native YouTube app or website. Unlike on iOS, however, YouTube’s efforts can only go so far.
How to use YouTube picture-in-picture in Safari on the Mac
There are just a few steps to start watching a YouTube video in picture-in-picture on the Mac in Safari.
- Open the YouTube video in Safari on your Mac as normal
- Right click on that YouTube video
- When the YouTube’s native right-click menu appears, right click one more time.
After you right click for second time, you’ll see Safari’s menu that includes the option to “Enter Picture-in-Picture.” Choosing this will snap the YouTube video into Safari’s native picture-in-picture experience.
As a refresher, Safari’s picture-in-picture video player can be placed in any of the four corners of your Mac’s display. You can resize the player to your preference, play or pause the video, and snap the video back to the YouTube video in Safari.
That’s literally all there is to it. I can’t believe it took me this long to realize this feature exists. Please don’t be as mean to me in the comments as my colleagues were to me in Slack .

YouTube in 4K is finally coming to Safari on the Mac
What you need to know
- macOS Big Sur 11 Beta 4 has added 4K HDR playback for YouTube on Safari.
- Until now, users have had to use Chrome on macOS to watch YouTube in 4K.
- The upgrade will be available to all Mac users who upgrade to Big Sur this fall.
Safari is finally going to be able to play YouTube in 4K on the Mac.
Announced by Apple in the macOS Big Sur 11 Beta 4 Release Notes , Safari will now support 4K HDR playback for YouTube videos that were shot in the resolution.
Rene Ritchie, YouTuber and podcast host, also tweeted out the find earlier today:
WOOHOO! — Safari and Webkit New Features in macOS Big Sur 11 beta 4 •Support for 4K HDR playback of YouTube videos. (64824895) https://t.co/1m9HGVYC9v WOOHOO! — Safari and Webkit New Features in macOS Big Sur 11 beta 4 •Support for 4K HDR playback of YouTube videos. (64824895) https://t.co/1m9HGVYC9v — Rene Ritchie (@reneritchie) August 4, 2020 August 4, 2020
Until now, playback of YouTube videos in Safari on macOS has been limited to 1080p. This is a welcome update, as users have been able to stream YouTube in 4K through the Chrome browser on the Mac for a while now.
The feature is currently only available to those with the macOS Big Sur 11 Beta 4 installed. The macOS Big Sur Public Beta is still not out, so it is unclear if 4K HDR playback will be available in the first version of that release.
Regardless, it appears that all Mac users will finally be able to stream YouTube in 4K HDR when macOS Big Sur releases to the public this fall.

Introduction
Have you ever encountered the frustrating message "This browser does not support YouTube"? If you're a Safari user, you might have come across this issue. Safari, the default web browser for Apple devices, is known for its sleek interface and seamless integration with the Apple ecosystem. However, when it comes to using YouTube, Safari users often face compatibility challenges.
YouTube, the world's largest video-sharing platform, is a go-to destination for entertainment, education, and much more. With millions of videos covering diverse topics, it's no wonder that users across the globe turn to YouTube for their daily dose of content. However, Safari users may find themselves unable to access YouTube seamlessly, leading to frustration and inconvenience.
In this article, we'll delve into the compatibility issues that Safari users encounter when trying to access YouTube. We'll explore the reasons behind these challenges and provide workarounds to help you enjoy YouTube content on Safari without any hiccups. Whether you're using a Mac, iPhone, or iPad, understanding the limitations and solutions for using YouTube on Safari can enhance your browsing experience and ensure that you don't miss out on the wealth of content available on the platform.
Let's embark on a journey to uncover the intricacies of using YouTube on Safari and discover how you can overcome the hurdles that stand in the way of seamless access to your favorite videos.
Compatibility Issues with Safari
Safari, the default web browser for Apple devices, is renowned for its user-friendly interface and seamless integration with the Apple ecosystem. However, when it comes to accessing YouTube, Safari users often encounter compatibility issues that hinder their browsing experience. These issues stem from various factors, including technological disparities and platform-specific optimizations.
One of the primary compatibility issues that Safari users face when trying to access YouTube is related to the use of outdated browser versions. YouTube, like many other online platforms, continually evolves to incorporate new features and technologies. As a result, older versions of Safari may struggle to keep up with the dynamic requirements of YouTube's interface and functionalities. This can lead to performance issues, video playback errors, and overall instability when attempting to use YouTube on Safari.
Furthermore, Safari's default settings and configurations may not always align perfectly with the technical specifications and standards that YouTube relies on for optimal performance. This mismatch can manifest in various ways, such as video buffering issues, playback errors, or the inability to access certain YouTube features seamlessly. Additionally, Safari's built-in security and privacy features, while beneficial for protecting users, can sometimes conflict with YouTube's requirements, leading to compatibility hurdles.
Another significant factor contributing to compatibility issues between YouTube and Safari is the absence of support for certain video codecs and formats. YouTube utilizes advanced video encoding technologies to deliver high-quality content to users across different devices and platforms. However, Safari's native support for these codecs and formats may not always be comprehensive, resulting in incompatibility issues that affect the seamless playback of YouTube videos.
Moreover, the absence of certain web technologies and APIs in older versions of Safari can also impede the full functionality of YouTube. As web standards evolve, YouTube incorporates new features that leverage these technologies to enhance the user experience. However, older versions of Safari may lack support for these advancements, leading to limitations in accessing and interacting with YouTube's interface and features.
In summary, the compatibility issues between YouTube and Safari stem from a combination of factors, including outdated browser versions, mismatched settings and configurations, codec/format limitations, and the absence of certain web technologies. Understanding these underlying issues is crucial for devising effective workarounds that enable Safari users to enjoy uninterrupted access to YouTube content. In the following section, we'll explore practical solutions and workarounds to address these compatibility challenges and enhance the YouTube experience on Safari.
Workarounds for Using YouTube on Safari
1. update safari to the latest version.
Keeping your Safari browser up to date is crucial for ensuring compatibility with YouTube. By updating to the latest version of Safari , you can benefit from performance enhancements, security updates, and improved support for web technologies. This can help mitigate compatibility issues and ensure a smoother YouTube browsing experience.
2. Use YouTube in HTML5 Player Mode
Safari users can opt to use YouTube in HTML5 player mode, which offers broader compatibility with web standards and video playback. To enable HTML5 player mode, simply visit the YouTube HTML5 page and opt into the HTML5 trial. This allows YouTube to utilize modern web technologies that are well-supported by Safari, potentially resolving playback and compatibility issues.
3. Install Browser Extensions
Utilizing browser extensions can extend Safari's capabilities and address specific compatibility challenges with YouTube. For instance, installing extensions that enhance video playback, manage cookies, or modify user-agent settings can help optimize the YouTube browsing experience on Safari. However, it's essential to choose reputable extensions from the Safari Extensions Gallery to ensure security and reliability.
4. Adjust Safari Settings
Fine-tuning Safari's settings can help alleviate compatibility issues when using YouTube. For example, adjusting privacy settings, clearing cache and cookies, and enabling specific web features can enhance YouTube's compatibility with Safari. Additionally, ensuring that JavaScript and plugins are enabled can contribute to a smoother YouTube browsing experience.
5. Use Alternative Browsers
In cases where compatibility issues persist, using alternative browsers such as Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox can provide a viable workaround. These browsers often offer robust support for YouTube's features and technologies, allowing users to access YouTube content seamlessly. While Safari remains the preferred browser for many Apple users, leveraging alternative browsers can serve as a temporary solution to overcome compatibility hurdles.
6. Seek Community Support and Updates
Engaging with the online community and staying informed about potential workarounds and updates can be invaluable for addressing YouTube compatibility issues on Safari. Participating in forums, following tech blogs, and staying updated on Safari and YouTube developments can provide insights into emerging solutions and community-driven workarounds.
By implementing these workarounds, Safari users can navigate around compatibility challenges and enjoy a more optimized YouTube experience. These solutions empower users to leverage the strengths of Safari while mitigating the limitations that may hinder seamless access to YouTube content.
In conclusion, the compatibility challenges between YouTube and Safari can present hurdles for users seeking to enjoy seamless access to the vast array of content available on the platform. However, by understanding the underlying factors contributing to these issues and implementing practical workarounds, Safari users can overcome these obstacles and enhance their YouTube browsing experience.
Updating Safari to the latest version emerges as a fundamental step in addressing compatibility issues, as it ensures that users benefit from the latest performance improvements and web technology support. Additionally, opting for YouTube's HTML5 player mode and leveraging browser extensions tailored to enhance the YouTube experience on Safari can significantly improve compatibility and video playback.
Adjusting Safari's settings, such as privacy configurations and enabling essential web features, can further contribute to a smoother YouTube browsing experience. In cases where persistent compatibility issues arise, exploring alternative browsers with robust YouTube support can serve as a viable temporary solution.
Furthermore, staying informed about community-driven workarounds and updates can provide valuable insights into emerging solutions and optimizations for using YouTube on Safari. Engaging with the online community and seeking guidance from tech forums and blogs can empower users to navigate compatibility challenges effectively.
By embracing these workarounds and remaining proactive in addressing compatibility issues, Safari users can fully leverage the capabilities of their preferred browser while enjoying uninterrupted access to the diverse content offered by YouTube.
In essence, while compatibility issues between YouTube and Safari may present initial frustrations, the availability of practical workarounds and proactive measures empowers users to overcome these challenges and unlock a more seamless and enjoyable YouTube browsing experience on Safari.

Block Youtube Ads on Safari
YouTube is one of the most popular video-sharing platforms in the world.
By June 2022, more than 500 hours of video were uploaded to YouTube every minute, which is about 30,000 hours of uploaded content per hour .
However, videos are interrupted often by ads, and theyâre often irrelevant to your interests.
And while Safari comes with some built-in tracking protection , it does not block ads without using a browser extension.
Weâll explain different ways to block YouTube ads, including subscribing to YouTube Premium, using an ad blocker, or downloading a browser with ad blocking built-in.
Why Block YouTube Ads
YouTube ads are a way for the platform to generate revenue and support its creators, but some ads are more intrusive than others.
The main form of YouTube ads are:
- Pre-roll ads: Play before the video starts. They can be skippable or non-skippable, and they can last from 5 seconds to 20 seconds or more.
- Mid-roll ads: Play during the video, usually at a predetermined time. They can also be skippable or non-skippable, and they can interrupt the flow of the video.
- Post-roll ads: Play after the video ends. They are usually skippable, but they can still be annoying if you want to watch another video right away.
These types of ads can negatively affect your YouTube experience in several ways.
For example, YouTube ads:
- Waste your time and bandwidth by forcing you to watch something you are not interested in.
- Interrupt your concentration and enjoyment by breaking the continuity of the video.
- Expose you to unwanted or inappropriate content that may not match your preferences or values.
- Track your online activity and collect your personal data for advertising purposes.
So you may wonder, âCan you block ads on YouTube?â
Hereâs how to automatically skip ads on YouTube.

How to make YouTube load up to 5x faster in Safari
By Killian Bell âą 8:22 am, July 25, 2018
- Top stories
Have you ever wondered why YouTube is so much slower than all the other websites you visit in Safari? Did you know that you could make it up to five times faster with very little effort?
YouTubeâs new design doesnât play nicely with browsers that arenât Google Chrome, but with some simple tweaks, you can switch back to its previous design and enjoy much faster speeds.
Hereâs how.
Itâs not Safariâs fault that YouTube runs so poorly. In fact, the same problem affects Firefox and Microsoft Edge users, too. Itâs all because of the way YouTube is designed.
Google builds its services to run better inside Chrome. Some have been blocked from running inside rival browsers at all. What makes YouTube slow is that it still relies on a deprecated shadow API that only Chrome still supports.
https://www.twitter.com/cpeterso/status/1021626510296285185
This makes YouTube five times slower in Safari, Firefox, and Edge, according to Chris Peterson, a program manager for Mozilla â but there is a way to change that.
Speed up YouTube in Safari
You could ask Google to upgrade to the Polymer 2.0 or even 3.0 APIs, which are supported by other browsers. This would help make YouTube pages load a lot faster. But that probably wonât work.
The easiest solution is to force YouTube to revert to an older design that doesnât rely on the Polymer 1.0 API. Youâll lose its dark mode feature and a slightly more polished look, but the experience remains the same.
Hereâs what you need to do if you use Safari:
- Download the Tapermonkey script
- Tell Safari that you âTrustâ the script when it asks for your approval
- Download this user script that forces YouTube to use classic mode
If you use Firefox on your Mac, Mozilla has done the hard work for you. Simply download this Firefox extension that automatically forces YouTube to load its older design.

Your Guide to Private Browsing in Safari
Private browsing is often misunderstood, but it can be a helpful feature if you know whatâs what.
Quick Links
What private browsing does in safari, how to use safari private browsing on iphone and ipad, how to use safari private browsing on a mac, how to disable safari private browsing on iphone and ipad, how to disable safari private browsing on a mac, key takeaways.
- Private Browsing in Safari hides browsing history, autofill details, downloads, and locks tabs after inactivity.
- Safari on Mac groups private and non-private tabs, while on iPhone it shows all tabs regardless of mode.
- To use Private Browsing in Safari, identify it by a dark address bar, "Private" indicator, or "Private" next to the site URL.
Most browsers offer a private browsing mode that aims to keep the websites you view off the record. But what exactly does it do in Safari and how do you get the best out of it?
First and foremost, Private Browsing keeps the website pages you visit out of your History . The aim is to prevent someone else from seeing which pages you have visited if they have access to your phone or computer.
In Safari, Private Browsing does a lot more than just hide URLs. It also:
- Prevents recent searches from showing up in your history.
- Stops remembering details you enter in forms for autofill.
- Keeps downloaded items from appearing in your Downloads list.
- Locks private tabs after a period of inactivity.
- Adds tracking and fingerprinting protection.
However, it’s important to note that Private Browsing does not stop you from being tracked altogether. Websites you visit will still be able to use various methods to track you, and will still have access to all data that you send them.
On macOS, iOS, and iPadOS, Safari groups private tabs together, and separates them from non-private tabs. On Mac, each Safari window is either private or non-private, and can have as many tabs as you want.
On iPhone, you can switch between private and non-private modes, each of which shows all tabs belonging to that mode.
You can spot when you’re viewing a private tab with these signs:
- The address bar has a dark background. This may be less noticeable if you’re using Dark Mode .
- On Mac, you’ll see a prominent Private indicator in the title bar.
- On iPhone, you’ll see Private alongside the site URL at the bottom of your screen.
The steps to enter Private Browsing mode are nearly identical on an iPhone and iPad. The only difference is that the tab icon is at the bottom of the screen on iOS and the top on iPadOS.
- Long-press the tab icon (two overlapping pages) on the bottom-right (iPhone) or top-right (iPad) of your screen.
- Tap the New Private Tab menu item.
- If locked, enter your passcode to unlock Private Browsing.
You can enter Private Browsing mode on macOS using either a menu item or a keyboard shortcut:
- Open the File menu and choose New Private Window .
- Alternatively, use the keyboard shortcut Shift + Cmd + n .
- Use the browser as you normally would. Any tabs you open from this window will open in the same window, in private mode.
You may want to prevent users of an iPhone or iPad from using Private Browsing mode at all. To do so:
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap on Screen Time .
- Under RESTRICTIONS , click on Content & Privacy Restrictions .
- If not already enabled, press the toggle next to Content & Privacy Restrictions to enable.
- Tap Content Restrictions .
- Change the Web Content setting to Limit Adult Websites .
The option to enter private mode will now be gone.
On macOS, the wording of certain options differs slightly, but the overall process is near-identical to iOS:
- Open System Settings via the Apple menu.
- Click on Screen Time in the left panel.
- Under the Restrictions section, click on Content & Privacy .
- Click Content Restrictions .
- Change the Access to Web Content setting to Limit Adult Websites .
Private Browsing will now be unavailable in Safari, although any existing private windows will stay open.
Of course, anyone can re-enable Private Browsing using the same process, in reverse. However, you can use Screen Time’s Lock Screen Time Settings option to set a passcode and enforce the setting permanently.
How-To Geek
Youtube says you're offline here's how to fix it.
Many ways to fix the issue so you can watch your favorite videos.
Quick Links
Why does youtube say i'm offline, how to fix youtube's "you're offline. check your connection" error, key takeaways.
To fix YouTube's "You’re offline. Check your connection" error, make sure your internet is working, check if YouTube is down, ensure your browser extensions aren't the culprit, turn off your VPN, use different DNS servers, log out and back into your YouTube account, or disable IPv6 on your computer.
Can't watch your favorite videos as YouTube keeps displaying a "You're offline. Check your connection" error in Chrome or another browser? There are a few actions you can take to possibly get online again, and we'll show you what those actions are.
YouTube says "You're offline. Check your connection" in Chrome and other browsers because the site thinks your device isn't connected to the internet. The site has trouble loading, so it displays an error message.
You won't see the site's homepage, channels, videos, or any other content when the above error occurs. The main cause of this issue is a faulty internet connection, but there are other reasons.
To resolve an offline YouTube error, fix the items that can possibly cause the issue. The following are some of the solutions you can use to resolve the error and watch your favorite YouTube videos.
Check Your Internet Connection
The most common reason you get a YouTube offline error is that your internet connection isn't working. This prevents the site from loading, leading to an error message.
In this case, check your connection status and ensure it's working. Do that by opening a web browser and accessing another site. If your site fails to load, your connection is the culprit. Try to fix your internet problems by rebooting your router , re-connecting to your Wi-Fi network , or contacting your internet service provider (ISP) .
Check if YouTube Is Down
After checking and confirming that your internet connection is working, check if YouTube is down. The site's servers may be down, making your web browsers to be unable to load the site's web pages.
To do that, head to YouTube's page on Downdetector and check if the site is experiencing any issues. If this site says that YouTube is facing issues, that may be why you can't load your videos. In this case, wait until the company fixes the issue and brings the service back up.
Check Your Web Browser Extensions
Your web browser extensions let you do more in your browsers, but sometimes, they interfere with your sites' functionalities. Your browser may have an add-on, interfering with YouTube, causing the site not to load.
Related: How to Uninstall or Disable Extensions in Google Chrome
Verify that by disabling all the extensions in your Chrome , Firefox , Edge , or Safari web browser. Then, launch YouTube and see if the site opens. If you don't get the above error anymore, your extensions are the culprit. In this case, enable one extension at a time, then remove the culprit extension from your browser.
Disable Your VPN
A VPN app allows you to route your internet traffic via a third-party server. This setup sometimes causes trouble loading certain sites.
To check if your VPN is the culprit , disable your VPN service and load the YouTube site. If the site loads, your VPN has issues. In this case, change your location in your app and see if that fixes the issue. Or, get a new VPN app altogether.
Use Alternative DNS Servers
DNS servers help your web browsers translate domain names to IP addresses , which is required for your browsers to load your sites. It's possible your current DNS servers have issues, causing YouTube not to load.
In this case, switch to alternative DNS servers on your Windows 11 , Windows 10 , or Mac machine and see if that resolves your YouTube error.
Sign Out and Back Into Your YouTube Account
If your issue still isn't fixed, your login session with the site may have a problem. In this case, log out and back into your account on the site to possibly resolve your issue.
To do that, in the YouTube site's top-right corner, click your profile icon. In the open menu, select "Sign Out."
After you've logged out, sign back in using your login credentials.
Turn Off IPv6 on Your Computer
The last fix on the list is to turn off IPv6 on your computer to possibly fix your YouTube issue. IPv6 is the latest Internet Protocol Version, but it doesn't always work well.
To disable IPv6 on your Windows 11 or 10 PC, head into Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center > Change Adapter Settings. Right-click your network adapter and choose "Properties." Then, untick "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)" and select "OK."
On a Mac, navigate to System Preferences > Network. In the left sidebar, select your network. On the right pane, choose "Advanced." Access the "TCP/IP" tab, click the "Configure IPv6" drop-down menu, and choose "Off" or "Link-Local Only."
And that's how you resolve an issue that prevents you from accessing your favorite video site. Enjoy!

Foxtrot has left the building. A report from Eater Chicago reveals that Outfox Hospitality, which merged Foxtrot and the Chicago-based Domâs Hospitality five months ago , will file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. Its stores in Texas, D.C., and Illinois are all closed. All Dallas locations of Foxtrot are marked permanently closed on Google Maps, and the brandâs website has been taken down.
The news was first reported in the newsletter Snaxshot , which notes that Domâs didnât make the usual grocery order in the previous week. Reports say that Foxtrot workers were informed in a conference call on Tuesday morning that stores would be closing at noon CT and were instructed not to discuss it with customers. Eater Chicago reports that the company employs around 1,000 workers across multiple states. Outfox appointed a new C.E.O. in February 2024.
Foxtrot had four Dallas locations, the most recent on Greenville Ave., with others on Knox-Henderson, in Uptown on Hillcrest and also on McKinney.
A representative had not returned Eater Dallasâs request for comment at press time.

Jury recommends death penalty for Nassau County deputy killer
A river flood warning in effect for columbia county, âmonitor your credit card statementsâ: bartram park man warns of sunpass scam after online purchase.
Scott Johnson , Reporter/weekend anchor
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. â A Bartram Park man said he got random charges on his credit card after signing up for a sticker on SunPass â website.
The man requested anonymity and said this experience is concerning because heâs not sure how his credit card information was stolen.
Recommended Videos
He said he got on the SunPass website to get a $15 SunPass and shortly after the purchase, he started getting alerts from a credit card he seldom uses.
âMinutes later my credit card company sends me a text saying âDid you spend $3 on something?â Well, maybe that was SunPass. So I said yes. After 30 minutes went by then I get a $29, $39 charge from a gaming company. I Googled it and it was from China,â the man said.
When he called SunPass, operators kept warning him about fraudulent text messages that it had been dealing with. The man said he never clicked on a text message and only interacted with Sunpassâ website.
âI keep calling SunPass and they keep telling me not to use the text and I keep explaining the text had nothing to do with it,â the man said.
SunPass told News4JAX that the FBI is investigating the widespread text message scam.
âSimilar scams have been reported by toll agencies across the country over the past several days and the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) has issued a public service announcement warning the public about these scams,â a SunPass spokesperson said.
SunPass said theyâre not aware of a case like whatâs happening to the man and itâs unclear how he was scammed.
His only word of advice is to pay attention to your card statement if you get a SunPass.
âThatâs the reason Iâm warning people, please monitor your credit card statements because theyâre small charges. And you may not even notice them,â the man said.
SunPass said if you think youâve been a victim, contact the FBIâs Internet Crime Complaint Center at www.ic3.gov
