Zanzibar safari | Sun, Sea & Safari

Visitors to the glorious island of Zanzibar come not just for the breathtaking beaches, beautiful corals and turquoise waters but to make the most of their African travels and combine their beach plans with Zanzibar safari adventures on mainland Tanzania.

In the Zanzibar archipelago and its mainland in Tanzania, guests can easily combine the two. Zanzibar’s white sand beaches are simply stunning and attract visitors from the world over to its shores whilst the island’s wildlife attractions are more limited to marine life, monkeys and birds.

The big five (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and African buffalo) wildlife can easily be found however on the Tanzanian mainland, a short 30 minute plane hop from Zanzibar to the spectacular Selous Game Reserve or a 2 hour ferry ride to Mikumi NP or a 3 hour charter flight to the world renowned Serengeti National Park.

Zanzibar safari tours

A safari tour package in Tanzania is typically organized by a tour operator, safari tour company or via a self drive Africa safari trip, taking into consideration the number of days visitors would like to allocate for beach time and safari activities.

Certain periods are more favorable for a safari in the best conditions. To know the best time to visit Zanzibar , visitors should take into consideration the following key criteria:

  • Regions visited
  • Weather conditions

The best time to visit Zanzibar for a beach and safari trip is during the dry season, from late June to October. The Zanzibar beaches are dry with no rains and the summer months are ideal for the Great Wildebeest Migration river crossings and impressive wildlife sightings.

Zanzibar and Tanzania safari cost

Tanzania is a premier safari destination in Africa, thus incurring the more expensive costs associated with this.

There are multiple factors that can impact the cost of a safari in Tanzania including accommodation selected, trip duration, safari costs, tours, flight transfers from Zanzibar island to game reserves on the mainland, transfers, meal options and additional activities visitors may request.

Travellers on a budget can reduce costs by booking their own flights, accommodation and the best things to do in Zanzibar as well as hiring a 4*4 to travel between the parks and reserves.

Organizing your safari

There are a number of different options available for organizing your Zanzibar holiday and Tanzania safari including:

Tour operators

The biggest tour operators will offer safaris in Tanzania where visitors can book a package that will cover their flight, transport, accommodation, activities and food, an ideal option for those with no previous safari experience in preparing for such a trip.

Safari travel agencies

Visitors will often find dedicated safari travel agencies to be the best option in booking their dream safari. These agencies have many years experience in booking safaris as well as multiple partnerships with local tourism networks and lodges/game reserves.

Travel agencies typically offer:

  • Local tour guides
  • Trips to must-see wildlife areas and parks
  • All transportation from Stone Town in Zanzibar to the game reserve
  • High quality accommodation at reduced prices
  • Day safaris and full day itineraries customised to your requirements

The cost of the service of these specialized agencies can be a bit higher compared to other options, a cost worth bearing given the quality and ease of services provided.

Organizing your own safari is possible but only recommended for more experienced travelers and visitors on a strict budget.

Accommodation

Visitors typically will have the choice between lodges, chalets and campsites as well as African tent camps, suites and bedrooms.

Luxurious facilities are common including swimming pools, restaurants, bars, spas and terraces. Game viewings and plane transfers are organized by the accommodation providers.

Baraza Resort and Spa

Zanzibar is an attractive tropical island that combines perfectly with a safari experience in Tanzania. Zanzibar boasts some of Africa's finest swimming beaches, world-class scuba-diving sites, luxurious beachfront resorts, the finest spices in the world, and a wide range of water sports. Whether you want to spend your days relaxing on a tropical beach, explore the cultural attractions of Stone Town, or indulge in several adventure activities, this island affords you the gift of choice and an unforgettable getaway.

Zanzibar has a tropical climate allowing you to plan your seaside vacation in this part of Eastern Africa at any time of the year without any extreme variability in temperatures. The monsoon breezes blowing in from the Indian Ocean help to maintain its warm temperatures.

The best time to visit Zanzibar is from June to October during the cool, dry months of spring. Another popular time to visit this tropical island is from December to February when it’s hot and dry. The ocean temperatures are perfect for swimming, diving or snorkeling expeditions.

There are two best times to scuba dive off the coast of Zanzibar, in July and August and in February and March. Diving off the north coast is particularly good from June to October and off the south coast between November and March .

Zanzibar Island has two wet seasons, the long rains and the short rains. The long rains in Zanzibar begin in the month of March and pick up the tempo in April and May, dusting off by June while the short rains fall in the months of November and December . We don’t recommend visiting Zanzibar during the rainy seasons.

Unguja, also known as Zanzibar Island, is the main tropical island in the Tanzanian archipelago of Zanzibar.

Boasting some of the finest swimming beaches in Africa, as well as world-class scuba-diving sites, we rate Zanzibar as an ideal destination for travelers seeking a blissful, barefoot-luxury holiday. Whether you want to spend your days relaxing on a tropical beach, exploring the cultural attractions of Stone Town, or enjoying the many water sports on offer, this island has something for every traveler.

Zanzibar produces some of the world’s finest spices and is home to the endemic Zanzibar red colobus, the Zanzibar servaline genet, and the (possibly extinct) Zanzibar leopard.

Zanzibar is also perfectly combinable with a safari in Tanzania .

Stone Town is the heart and soul of the island and oldest part of Zanzibar City. Named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000, it is known for its rich cultural heritage of Arab, Persian, Indian, and European elements. An incredible mashup of winding alleys and old Arabic-style buildings, you can temporarily lose yourself in the town’s magic. Soak up the local culture by sipping a cup of coffee from a local vendor or wander through the streets, discovering unique little spots at every turn.

Palace Museum

Commonly known as the Sultan’s Palace, The Palace Museum is perhaps the most historic building in Stone Town and is a must-see for any traveler. The Palace Museum is located in the waterfront, overlooking the ocean, and was built in the 19th century as a home for the Sultan and his family. After the 1964 revolution, the site was used as a Government building and was renamed as The People’s Palace. Today it serves as a museum that showcases relics of the past Sultan family.

House of Wonders

The House of Wonders is a hugely important and visually stunning historic building in Stone Town. The House of Wonders rises in impressive tiers of slender steel pillars and balconies overlooking the waterfront. Its enormous carved doors are said to be the largest in East Africa, fronted by two bronze cannon with Portuguese inscriptions dating them to the 16th century. It boasts a highly interesting exhibition that offers a brilliant insight into Zanzibari and Swahili culture. The House of Wonders is the grandest and tallest building in all of Stone Town and is found in a prominent location in front of the Forodhani Gardens on the old town’s seafront.

The Old Fort

The oldest building in Stone Town, the Old Fort is located on the seafront, right in front of the famous Forodhani Gardens. Originally built in the 17th century with the purpose of defending the island from attacks from the Portuguese, nowadays the Old Fort is one of Stone Town’s main sights. Visitors can admire the remains of the former fort and amble around the courtyard in the center, where sellers have local produce for sale. An old amphitheater still hosts events and functions in the fort.

Prison Island

A half-hour boat trip from Zanzibar, Prison Island provides a fascinating glimpse into the island’s slightly dark past – this land was once used as a place where slaves were detained and, when slavery was abolished, it functioned as a camp where people with deadly diseases were sent. Fortunately enough, that is all in the past and today the island is a nature reserve for giant tortoises and a place to see the ruins that once functioned as the prison.

Jozani Forest

A vast and scenic spread of green, Jozani is the last indigenous forest left on Zanzibar. Located inland from Chwaka Bay the area often floods, which luckily nurtures a unique swamp forest of many amazing looking trees and ferns. This forest is one of the last remaining sanctuaries in the world of the red Colobus monkey and is also a great place to encounter many indigenous varieties of flora and fauna. The forest is best reached via bus (309 or 310), by chartered taxi, or as part of an organized tour.

Nungwi Beach

Nungwi is a village found on Zanzibar’s North West tip. This is a popular place yet it’s not overrun by tourists, and it’s one of Zanzibar's top beaches as the tide doesn’t head out too far. The aquarium on the north coast of Nungwi near the lighthouse, rears small turtles found on the beach until they are large enough and then released to survive in the sea. The aquarium is a natural pond with seawater that seeps through the cliff at high tide. This is a great destination for those looking to just soak up some sun and dip their toes in the sea but don’t need the luxury of a fancy hotel.

Zanzibar is known for its spice trade, so what better way to immerse yourself in the local culture than learning about its wealthiest and most profitable industry? Travelers can choose from a variety of tours and explore the winding streets with expert tour guides who will inform you of the origins of the industry, as well as teaching guests about the wide variety of spices that Zanzibar produces and trades in.

Anja is awesome!
Anja is awesome!! She went above and beyond for me as I had several changes until I locked in my bucket list itinerary and then my friend cancelled. She wasn't mad and just went about cancelling her portion which saved me money in the long run. Anja is a true professional regardless and I have been dealing with her since Sept 2023. Cannot wait until my trip in Sept 2024.

Shann was beyond amazing
Shann was beyond amazing. Listened to our needs, communicated super-efficiently and gave really honest excellent advice. She was so patient, kind and professional. The time difference across the globe made no difference. I am so excited for the itinerary she has put together. I usually cobble my own itinerary together for our holidays and it’s so time consuming and hard work. This was a piece of cake! Thank you Shann.
Great planning and service
Great planning and service, and everything worked like clockwork. We booked an Inyari Lodge safari with air with Safari.com. it wasn't clear if there will be 2 or three of us, so with Candis' help we booked a family chalet for 2 and added the third later when it was confirmed he can come. Candis put us on flights that maximized our game drive time (unlike some of the other guests) so we got all 6 drives in 3 nights. The lodge was great. Especially the game drives. We saw more than we hoped for. Additionally, Safari.com's insurance was very competitive. Highly recommended.

Fantastic travel agent for African safari family trip!
Wow! Shann was and is fantastic! She figured out a way to make our entire trip work. We are going on a 2 week trip to South Africa and Botswana. She really helped tie it all together as a wonderful, cohesive trip. She is super nice and super smart and very knowledgeable. She is also flexible and thoughtful, etc., etc. When the chips were down (and we literally were considering pulling the plug on the whole trip), she found a way to make the entire itinerary work and got us excited about our wonderful adventure! Highly recommend!

Learn more about Zanzibar

Culture and customs.

The Zanzibar archipelago is an eclectic melting pot of cultures, customs, and religions. Within the streets of Stone Town, you’ll find mosques and churches standing literally side by side. While Zanzibar is a primarily Muslim region, it shares a history of cultural influences that spread as far wide as the Middle East,  India , and ancient Persia. Previously a protectorate of Britain and officially a part of Tanzania since 1964, the archipelago has a long history of bureaucratic changes and tensions.

Currently, the population of Zanzibar is largely divided. Many still champion for independence from Tanzania and seek to have Zanzibar declared its own country. Despite their political differences, the discussion remains respectful between the locals. You are just as likely to see them passionately debating politics in town centers as you are to see tropical fruit farmers hawking their produce roadside all around the islands. But one thing everyone in Zanzibar has in common is their love of soccer. Head to any beach in the late afternoon and you are almost guaranteed to witness the locals coming together for a friendly game of beach soccer.

Eating and drinking

The variety of food in Zanzibar rivals anywhere in the world. It owes this entirely to its geography: being at the crossroads of ancient trade routes, the locals have picked up a thing or two about worldly cuisines.  Whether it is yam and plantain-based dishes from the Bantu peoples of Eastern Africa, Indian inspired masala curries featuring many of the spices the island is famous for, or the sweet date and hazelnut bread is traditionally eaten to celebrate the end of Ramadan – you will be spoiled for choices to fill your plate! Unsurprisingly for an island, seafood takes pride of place in Zanzibar and seafood lovers will rejoice at the wide range of dishes available at restaurants and markets.   An absolute must for anyone visiting Stone Town is the Forodhani night market. As soon as the sun sets each night, beachside Forodhani Park transforms into an open-air food market filled will vendors tempting you to try their dishes. Our pick is the Zanzibar pizza – filled with whatever fresh ingredients take your fancy at the time. Wash it all down with fresh coconut juice (direct from the coconut of course!)

Perhaps the most famous export from Zanzibar is its spices, including pepper, cinnamon and ginger to name a few. Visit a spice plantation to sample countless types of spices directly from the source. Don’t forget to pick up a selection from the local markets before you leave.

Zanzibar has a large Muslim population, so bear in mind that Ramadan is the fasting month for all Muslims. During this month, no food, drink or smoking is permitted during daylight hours. While non-Muslims aren't expected to fast, it's recommended to try to avoid eating, drinking or smoking in public during daylight hours.

Must-try foods in Zanzibar:

1. pweza wa nazi.

Octopus boiled in coconut milk to create a curry-based dish with cinnamon, cardamom, garlic and lime juice.

2. Barbecued lobster

Enjoy a lobster grilled to perfection at one of the many beachside eateries around the island.

3. Spice cake

A typical local dessert made using pastry with a mix of cinnamon, clove, nutmeg and chocolate.

Geography and Environment

Zanzibar is an island province of Tanzania located off the coast of East Africa. Surrounded by the Indian Ocean on all fronts, it is covered mostly in lush rainforest and encircled by white beaches and coral reefs.

Zanzibar is actually an archipelago made up of many small islands and two prominent, main ones: Pemba Island and Unguja Island – the largest, often mistaken as ‘Zanzibar Island’, where the majority of the province’s population lives.

While there are various swanky stores in main hubs like Stone Town, specializing inexpensive trinkets and homewares, you simply can’t visit Zanzibar and not take an afternoon stroll through one of its lively, colorful markets. Lose yourself amongst the hustle of Darajini market in Stone Town, where you will find stores piled high with spices, vegetables, fabrics and dried snacks. The market is so jam-packed, stores often spill out into the tiny laneways nearby.

Things to buy in Zanzibar

Don’t leave the island without purchasing a selection of the many spices still grown on plantations today. Pepper, cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg are among the islands’ specialties. But you can find almost every type of spice imaginable here!

2. Woven handicrafts

Pick up a handmade ukili bag, placemat, rug or even a sun hat. The locals have perfected this handicraft and are widely available throughout Zanzibar. A great way to support local initiatives and talent.

Festivals and events

Festival of the dhow countries .

The highlight of the Zanzibar International Film Festival, the Festival of the Dhow Countries is a cultural celebration of international film, music, theatre, and performing arts. One of the biggest annual cultural festivals in Africa, it takes place over the first two weeks of July. Film screenings, exhibitions, and craft classes are on offer during the day, while at night beach parties are a fun way to interact with locals.

Sauti Za Busara Festival

If you are lucky enough to visit Stone Town in early February, you’ll be treated to a hypnotising swell of Swahili music and dance during this vibrant celebration of East African culture. The festival concludes with a beachside festival of crafts, cuisine and entertainment.

2-Day Safari From Zanzibar - Compare 82 Tours

There’s nowhere in East Africa quite like Zanzibar, both for its beaches and fascinating cultural offering that is utterly unlike anywhere else you can visit in Africa. But it also opens up some fantastic opportunities for going on a safari on the Tanzanian mainland, which lies just across the water. It’s a very common combination that allows you to see two of Tanzania’s most memorable attractions: the Indian Ocean coastline and its safari parks with their amazing wildlife. There are so many tours and packages to choose from, and although 2 days isn’t very much time, you’ll still get a taste of what this diverse country has to offer.

5 Questions About 2-Day Safaris From Zanzibar

Anthony Ham

Answered by

Anthony ham.

zanzibar safari trip

Which parks are typically visited on a 2-day trip from Zanzibar?

“Going on a 2-day safari from Zanzibar means you will most likely travel on day 1 and return to Zanzibar on day 2, allowing you one precious night in the park of your choice. To make the most of your limited time, you will need to fly in both directions, preferably to an airstrip inside or very close to the park. With only 2 days and 1 night in a park, you should really make it a good one. If you decide to visit Tanzania’s south, then Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve) is a fine choice. Its main rival would be Mikumi National Park. If, instead, you travel to the north, Serengeti National Park would always be my first choice, although it would be quite a long flight to get there. Any of Lake Manyara National Park, Tarangire National Park or Ngorongoro Crater would also ensure an absolutely fantastic safari.”

Is the south or north of Tanzania better for a 2-day safari from Zanzibar?

“As long as you choose your park carefully, it’s impossible to have a bad safari in either the south or north of Tanzania, so you can’t really lose! When making your choice, a key question to ask your safari tour operator is whether you can fly directly to the park from Zanzibar or whether you have to change planes (in Arusha or Dar es Salaam, for example). With only 2 days at your disposal, a change of planes can waste valuable time. As a general rule, it’s easier to find direct flights to southern Tanzanian parks, but it’s best if you ask your operator about the options. When it comes to the parks themselves, there’s not much difference in relation to wildlife. Big cats, elephant, giraffe, zebra and most of the safari animal highlights can be seen in nearly all parks across both regions. One thing that Nyerere has that other parks don’t is a boat safari on the beautiful Rufiji River. But remember that time spent on the boat will take away from the time available for game drives, where you’ll generally see more animals.”

Are 2 days enough for a trip from Zanzibar?

“The short answer is no, but 2 days are better than none. There are many different tours and packages available, but a 2-day safari from Zanzibar will always involve flying to the park on day 1 and flying back on day 2. The benefit of this (when compared to a 1-day safari) is that you will get to stay overnight in the destination and have time for game drives during the ideal times for seeing animals: late afternoon and early morning. The downside is that you won’t get to enjoy a full day in the park you’re visiting. At the end of your 2 days, you will almost certainly wish that you had more time. But the same could be said for just about any length of safari. More than that, if given the choice between a 2-day safari from Zanzibar and no safari at all, I would choose the 2-day safari every single time.”

Are all 2-day safaris from Zanzibar fly-in safaris?

“Because Zanzibar is an island, and it is impossible to have a classic safari experience there, you have no choice but to fly to the Tanzanian mainland and then fly back. You also have very limited time on a 2-day safari, so flying is the best way to make the most of that time. Flying has pros and cons. On the one hand, flying is expensive, which will make it almost impossible to arrange a cheap or affordable 2-day safari from Zanzibar. But if you can afford it, the views as you fly into the park should be worth every dollar you spend. Your trip will feel less like a transfer and more like a scenic flight. A fly-in safari should mean that you fly from Zanzibar into an airstrip inside the national park (or, in the case of Nyerere, just outside the park gate). Very often this airstrip will be close to your accommodation, and you’ll be driven around in a safari 4WD vehicle while you’re in the park or reserve.”

How much does a 2-day trip from Zanzibar cost?

“There are almost as many packages and tours available for a 2-day safari from Zanzibar as there are tour operators, so expect the prices that you are quoted to vary greatly. Because each day of your trip will include an expensive air transfer, your safari will cost at least US$500 per person per day. It could cost much more if it’s high season and you stay in luxury accommodation. Always ask your tour operator what’s included in, and what’s excluded from, the price they quote. As a general rule, it should include both air transfers, park entry fees, accommodation, meals, guide, vehicle and a driver. You’ll have to pay for all these things whether they’re included in the quoted price or not, so ask for a full list to avoid any nasty surprises when it comes time to pay.”

As you walk out of Kilimanjaro International Airport, your personal Tanzania Specialist guide greets you with a big smile: 'Karibu Tanzania - welcome to Tanzania!' The guide takes you straight to your hotel, where you can relax and take in the African atmosphere. The next day your guide takes you on an exclusive, private safari that allows you to travel at your own pace. Enjoy the luxury of your own safari jeep and take the liberty to stop and watch the animals as long as you like!

Tarangire National Park is well known for its big groups of elephants and the huge amount of giant baobab trees. These trees can live for hundreds of years and are actually a source of water for elephants in the dry season as they have a special technique to draw water from them. Besides, the Tarangire River is the only source of water in the dry season, which is why in this season in Tarangire you can see groups of up to 250 elephants next to many more animals!

Day 3 - 4: Serengeti National Park (central west/east)

Serengeti National Park is widely known as the place to go on safari, mainly because of the Great Migration that passes through here. The enormous, stampeding herds are impressive, as are the vast amount of predators that live here: over four thousand lions, 225 cheetahs, a thousand leopards, 3500 hyenas and hundreds of wild dogs! And of course, plenty of other beautiful animals, which your guide will be delighted to search for together with you. Are you ready for this?

The famous Ngorongoro Crater is one of Africa's seven natural wonders. The crater was formed two million years ago when a vast volcano erupted. The fertile lava has created a unique ecosystem, now home to the highest concentration of animals found anywhere in Africa! Once in the crater, thousands of animals such as lions, zebras, buffalos and black rhinos surround you, and the views are astounding – you won’t know where to look! Watch the video of the park here .

Today you fly to the spice island of Zanzibar. You will be picked up at the airport by your guide and taken to your hotel.

Over the next few days, you can discover white sandy beaches, crystal-clear turquoise waters and vibrant coral reefs. Immerse yourself in the rich culture and history of Stone Town, visit spice plantations and enjoy the delicious local cuisine. The tropical paradise awaits you!

Day 7 - 9: Zanzibar

Ultimate paradise is here: gorgeous, tropical Zanzibar! The clear blue waters of the Indian Ocean and the palm-fringed, white sandy beaches are almost too beautiful to be true. Buy your coconut drink fresh on the beach, spend hours sunbathing or swimming, and taste the delicious Zanzibari food. In the mood for something active? Then explore the beach, ocean, and island through a range of activities ! We highly recommend the Safari Blue Cruise or a tour of Stone Town.

The last day! Depending on your flight time, you can relax on the beach or explore the island just a little bit more. A driver then takes you to Zanzibar International Airport in time for your flight home. Having second thoughts? It's also possible to extend your holiday to another paradise island , such as Mnemba, Pemba, or Mafia!

We ordered this tour in Russian but the guide only knew 5 words. He also did not explain anything about the places we’ve visited. It was more like here we go, be back in 15 min. So definitely would not recommend this particular tour. Read more Written March 17, 2024

  • Itsdipen 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Poorly organised and very disappointing As a solo traveler, I booked a "private" group tour, expecting an exclusive experience. However, upon arrival, I was dismayed to find myself merged with another group from a different tour company. The only private aspect was that each group got their own tour guide. The pickup and drop-off at the farm went well. The taxi showed up early and phoned me to let me know they were outside. The first stop was the farm. The farm was OK, very gimmicky and tip orientated, so make sure you bring small notes. The problems started on our way to prison island. The rain was coming down, we were given big umbrellas by the tour company, which is great that they came prepared. However, the other group did not feel like traveling to prison island in the rain, so to accommodate them, the tour guide for a DIFFERENT company (Family Safari and Tours) decided that we would wait for the rain to stop before traveling. I had to wait for almost 2 hours for the rain to stop. They only booked one boat, so we all had to go together. As disappointing as this was, I let it slide. I decided to get an early lunch while we waited for the rain to stop. When the rain finally did stop, the journey to prison island was fine, as was the tour itself, but the tour guide was very inexperienced. We had to travel back in the same boat, so my tour guide should have kept pace with the other group so we didn't finish too quickly. He did not, so I had to wait around 40 mins in the heat at the end for the other group who stopped at the bar after the tour. My tour guide and I were already outside and waiting for the boat at this point. To be clear, my issue isn't with the other group. They booked privately (as did I) and had every right to take their time. My issue lies specifically with the management of Mango Tours or Family Safari or whoever is responsible for the booking. Once they finally returned and we got back to Stone Island, the walking tour was lackluster. There wasn't much information given about the history of Stone Island besides information about the doors. The tour guide was nice and accommodating, it wasn't really his fault the company cheaped out and put me on another boat. He was still very inexperienced and should have managed the pace better and also should have been better informed of the history of the island. I booked another tour the same time I booked this one for the next day. That got 5 stars, so your experiences may vary. Read more Written January 1, 2024

As it’s a private tour, they accommodate to you specifically and make sure you’re not tired or too hot! They always have fresh water bottles on hand and have your best interest. Simba is king of the road with his careful driving and I felt very safe in his car. Ibrahim was also incredibly patient and came with me on tour if I felt uncomfortable by myself or if I just wanted company - and he was always happy to do so! Thank you Mango Travels for making my solo trip a safe and fun experience! P.S. Simba has a greatly music playlist in his car! Read more Written December 12, 2023

My travel was very good. Guide Khamis was very helpful and we are still meeting, I would like to come back and recommend it to everyone. Turgay from Turkey,İstanbul

Dear Khamis, thank you so much for this great experience and for not only being our personal guide but also being a friend!

Zanzibar is a place with dark chapters in history, but at the same with so breathtaking beautiful landscapes, nature and arquitecture. Visiting Freddy Mercury’s birth house was really cool and we enjoyed strolling through these little alleys and the food market. Thank you for all the deep conversations we had during the lunch about everthing under the sun, never had thought that we would learn so much about Zanzibar and the people living there! This tour has left us with so many impressions and beautiful memories and we were happy to help you understand German grammar 🙂

Best wishes from Germany

Courtesy of Zanzibar White Sand Luxury Villas & Spa

It takes time to unwind at White Sand Luxury Villas & Spa . Not the least of which is because, in all likelihood, most guests at the Zanzibar luxury resort are arriving — as my husband John and I did last winter — post-safari. Reeling from our bush adventures in Serengeti National Park, we were still firing on all cylinders when we reached the 10-acre beachfront resort on the Tanzanian island’s eastern coast. Accustomed to 5 a.m. wake-up calls, eight-hour safari drives, and all the requisite thrills that come with it, we were floating on the extreme highs of predator kills and rare animal sightings — hardwired for anything but relaxation.

Upon arrival, Idrissa, introduced as our doting butler, must have sensed just how tightly wound his new guests were. And so, he slowly immersed us into his tropical oasis. Like dipping one toe at a time into a hot bath of water, we slowly toured the grounds: first, the rooftop bar, where we gazed over the resort, coastline, and endless stretch of Indian Ocean; then the beach (yes, the sand is white — there’s truth in advertising here); and finally, winding through the tropical grounds to the al fresco restaurants, thatch-roofed spa, and resort pool.

Only after this extended orientation did Idrissa deliver us to our villa, where yet another tour was necessitated. How else would we know where the stairs next to our bedroom led? (Answer: To a sprawling terrace for dining, napping, and soaking in birds-eye views of the beach.) Or how to take a bath? (The soaking tub is in a secret garden behind the bathroom, and Idrissa was all too kind to fill it with bubbles and flower petals for our arrival.) We’d also need tutorials on the butler’s kitchen — everything from what spices were used in the freshly baked cookies on the table to how to use the espresso machine — as well as intel on the goodies left on our bed (the Relais & Chateaux–branded hats and traditional kitenge sarongs were ours for the keeping).

Lengthy orientations aside, once the mellow of White Sand hits, it hits hard. Over the next three days, Idrissa checked in on us occasionally — if anything, to make sure we hadn’t died of relaxation. As the high-octane energy of our safari slowly left our bodies, it was replaced by a euphoric state in which we were unconcerned with anything, save for perhaps where we’d take our sundowners (on our rooftop terrace or at the sunset bar?) or how often we needed to reapply sunscreen (hourly for best results). Plans for tennis matches were carelessly abandoned, along with lofty goals of learning to windsurf — a serious pastime on this part of the island — or even a bit of gym time. Utterly unbothered with anything resembling a to-do list, we all but quarantined ourselves within the confines of our tropical oasis, with only Idrissa’s occasional check-ins, dropping off delicious frozen fruit skewers or even more delicious frozen fruit cocktails to mark the passage of time.

Yet even in our lackadaisy, we absorbed the spirit of Zanzibar, as if by osmosis: at meals bursting with local spices and fresh flavors of the island; at the Lounge Bar, decorated with vibrant textiles, pottery, and woven baskets; and at the Senses Spa, where my body was buffed, and face exfoliated using Zanzibari cloves, lemongrass, cinnamon, and other native remedies. Lunchtime views over the beach were dotted with dozens of ngalawa , the traditional sailing boat of local fishermen. Walking through the resort’s gardens, we made the acquaintance of more locals: curious Red Colobus monkeys swinging from branch to branch.

By the time Idrissa called on us to gather our luggage for check-out, John and I were perhaps unrecognizable to our doting butler and especially to our former selves. We had become the kind of people who would think nothing of lounging on a hammock all day and certainly not the sort to entertain a 5 a.m. wake-up call. The change was slow at first, then absolute — a testament to the transformative power of our white-sand Zanzibari retreat.

Here, everything you need to know about White Sand Luxury Villas & Spa .

Zanzibar White Sand Luxury Villas & Spa

  • Secluded and spacious private villas with every luxury accounted for, including a private pool and beach access, a rooftop terrace, and separate living room and bedroom villas.
  • The hotel is located in Paje, a lively tourist destination with excellent restaurants and world-class kitesurfing and scuba diving (a watersports pavilion is located on resort grounds).
  • Cuisine is a star at the resort, emphasizing natural ingredients and local spices, from cinnamon porridge for breakfast to catches of the day and traditional biryani for dinner — all included in nightly room rates.

Our 968-square-foot beachfront one-bedroom villa was a stunner, spread across two air-conditioned structures: a living room and dining room with a butler’s kitchen, plus a bedroom with en suite bathroom. An exterior staircase connected the bedroom to a rooftop terrace, with a beach-view dining table and daybed. A private garden featured a soaking tub. The entire private space measures more than 16,000 square feet, with multiple sundecks, a swimming pool, and a private beachfront with hammock and ocean access.

Other villa categories include the $2,400-per-night two-bedroom family villa and the $4,300-per-night five-bedroom presidential villa. There are also more affordable suite accommodations, including the Cinnamon Rooms with garden views and Deluxe Rooms with access to a shared pool. A new collection of Garden Villas operates entirely off-grid, using 100 percent renewable energy and operating with net-zero carbon emissions. All 18 rooms, villas, and suites are decorated with natural wood and stone interiors accented by traditional textiles and objets d’art, with thatched roofing and abundant tropical foliage outside.

Reservations at White Sand Luxury Villas & Spa are booked on a half-board basis, with standard rates including daily breakfast and multi-course dinners. Guests can choose to upgrade to an all-inclusive booking covering three meals per day plus all house wines, beers, spirits, and liqueurs, as well as mini-bar items.

Unlike many all-inclusive resorts, White Sand’s dining is top-notch, with a diverse selection and regularly changing menus. Breakfasts are packed with fresh fruits and pastries, Zanzibari porridge seasoned with local cinnamon and spices, and classic dishes like eggs Benedict and omelets. Instagram-worthy floating breakfasts in your private swimming pool are also offered for an additional fee. An al fresco beach café turns out delicious pizzas from a wood-burning oven, fresh catches, and crisp salads (best enjoyed with a bottle of rosé). Multi-course dinners featuring South African wine pairings are served by candlelight at the main restaurant or course-by-course by your butler in-villa. Sundowners are served at the Sunset Bar, where views stretch over the Indian Ocean.

With year-round winds and calm shallow waters, Paje is known worldwide for excellent kitesurfing — and White Sand Luxury Villas & Spa is home to one of the area’s best facilities, Zanzibar Kite Paradise. The high-end watersports club offers kitesurfing lessons, equipment rental, snorkeling, stand-up paddleboards, and kayaks (including glass-bottom kayaks).

For more physical activity, book one of the resort’s tennis courts with a pro, join a free group yoga session, or borrow a bicycle to explore the city (via beach cruiser) or the sand (via fat-tired e-bike). There’s also an al-fresco fitness center with limited weight-lifting equipment and just a few cardio machines.

Several excursions can also be organized through your butler. Choose from a traditional ngalawa boat tour, horseback riding, or a guided visit to the nearby Jozani National Forest. A tour of historic Stone Town — a UNESCO World Heritage Site with fascinating history, architecture, and food markets – is a must.

The Senses Spa is small but a standout nonetheless for its traditional treatments and serene setting. Each of the two open-air treatment rooms is enclosed in a thatched-roof stone structure that allows the tropical breezes to pass through. There is also a hammam, infrared sauna, salon, and nail and hair salon. During my 60-minute Zanzibar Spice Scrub, I was massaged and buffed with a concoction of fragrant cloves, healing lemongrass, and nourishing moringa oil. A facial using hydrating marula and rose followed for a head-to-toe glow.

Family-Friendly Offerings

White Sand Luxury Villas & Spa provides plenty of diversions for all ages, from a baby pool and sandy playground with slides and mini trampolines for its littlest guests to watersports lessons and PlayStations for teens. There’s also ping pong, table football, petanque, darts, volleyball, chess, and board games. Children’s menus are available at both restaurants, and everyday needs — including changing tables, bottle warmers, baby bathtubs, and pool floaties — are available for guest use. Nearby, the resort’s mini-farm with rabbits and donkeys, as well as the native Red Colobus monkey, is ideal for family visits. The Senses Spa even offers kid treatments such as the 60-minute Junior Glow, combining gentle Swedish massage and a mini facial. White Sand also provides babysitting services for an additional fee.

Accessibility and Sustainability

White Sand Luxury Villas & Spa is the first resort on the island of Zanzibar to feature off-the-grid accommodations. Four recently completed villas operate entirely on solar energy produced by photovoltaic solar panels. Throughout the resort, solar heating provides hot water, and a desalination plant filtration system produces high-quality drinking water, eliminating the need to import bottled water. Biowaste is used for compost throughout the 10-acre grounds, including the organic herb and vegetable garden and fruit trees, all of which supply produce for the resort’s restaurants. White Sand also partners with local producers to provide everything from the handmade soaps in the guest rooms to the fresh catches of the day offered at the two restaurants.

Located in the resort town of Paje, White Sand Luxury Villas & Spa is roughly 30 miles (about one hour) from the Abeid Amani Karume International Airport. Renting a car is neither necessary nor recommended as taxis are reliable and affordable. The resort also provides airport transfers and other local transportation at a fair cost. Many of Paje’s attractions are easily within walking or biking distance.

How to Get the Most Value Out of Your Stay

Cinnamon Rooms start at $750 per night, with coveted villas starting at $1,900 per night. All bookings come with half-board, including daily breakfast and dinner, butler service, and unlimited non-motorized watersports. The all-inclusive option is an excellent value for those who enjoy a cocktail (or five) or with large appetites. A bonus for families: Children under three stay and eat for free. Discounted rates also kick in when booking four or more nights.
