Arctic Monkeys have cancelled a gig days before Glastonbury , prompting fears they’ll pull out of the festival.

The Sheffield quartet, led by Alex Turner , are midway through a world tour and, after three days at London’s Emirates Stadium, were set to play Marlay Park in Dublin on Tuesday (20 June).

However, a statement released via the band’s official social media accounts on Monday (19 June) revealed that the band have been forced to cancel the show as Turner is suffering from acute laryngitis.

“We are extremely sorry to announce the cancellation of Arctic Monkeys’ show at Marlay Park in Dublin tomorrow,” it read.

“Alex is suffering from acute laryngitis, and following medical advice, has been ordered to rest.”

The statement continued: “Alex and the band apologise for the huge disappointment this will inevitably cause to all their Irish fans.”

Arctic Monkeys’ post assured concertgoers that “full refunds will be credited back to the ticket purchaser’s account by Ticketmaster within the next six working days”.

This decision came after revellers attending the final Emirates show on Sunday (18 June) noted how Turner appeared to be struggling through some of his songs including “Brianstorm”, “Cornerstone” and “The View from the Afternoon”.

It has left those attending Glastonbury this week concerned that the band will cancel their headline set on Friday (23 June).

“Absolutely gutted, really hope Alex gets better soon and that all is good for Glastonbury,” one prospective Marlay Park concertgoer wrote, adding: “Please come back to Dublin soon.”

The band’s Irish fans lamented the decision to cancel a sold-out show, but wished the singer a speedy recovery.

It seems likely that Turner is hoping to rest his vocals in order to ensure the Glastonbury performance goes ahead. The band’s set is due to take place on the Pyramid Stage from 10.15pm to 11.45pm, with the performance scheduled to be broadcast live on the BBC.

It will be Arctic Monkeys’ third Glastonbury headline slot having performed their first in 2007, and their second a decade ago in 2013.

The band released their debut record, Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not , in 2006, with their most recent album, The Car , released in 2022.

During recent shows, Arctic Monkeys have been playing some old favourites, including debut album track “Mardy Bum” and “Fluorescent Adolescent”, which featured on their 2007 follow-up Favourite Worst Nightmare .

Other albums include Humbug (2009), Suck It and See (2011) and Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino (2018).

Headliners at this year’s Glastonbury, which opens its gates in Worthy Farm on Wednesday (21 June), also include Guns N’ Roses and Elton John. Find the full line-up here , and a list of the 20 greatest Glastonbury performances here .

Arctic Monkeys: Glastonbury 2023 headline set thrown into doubt by Alex Turner’s laryngitis

Band cancel open-air Dublin gig on Tuesday, leaving a nervous wait for fans looking forward to Friday’s Glastonbury set

Alex Turner, frontman with Arctic Monkeys , is suffering from “acute laryngitis” and the band have been forced to cancel an open-air concert in Dublin on Tuesday.

His condition could affect his ability to perform the group’s Glastonbury headline slot on Friday evening, though it is currently scheduled to go ahead.

In a statement on social media , the band said they were extremely sorry to cancel the concert at Dublin’s Marlay Park, adding: “Alex is suffering from acute laryngitis and, following medical advice, has been ordered to rest.” Ticketholders for the Dublin concert will have their orders refunded within six days.

The band are due to play the final concert on the UK run of their current world tour in Glasgow’s Bellahouston Park on Sunday, before continuing the tour with 15 dates across Europe, then legs in North America and Mexico, until mid-October.

The tour, coming off the back of seventh studio album The Car, has recently visited a string of major UK venues including London’s Emirates Stadium and two homecoming concerts in Sheffield’s Hillsborough Park.

In a five-star review of the opening night in Bristol, Guardian reviewer Huw Baines described “a storm of rock music that’s as surprising as it is thrilling in its brutish simplicity” in its opening half, giving way to performances from The Car “suggesting that these new songs can be muscular stadium-fillers all on their own”.

What is acute laryngitis? Alex Turner cancels Arctic Monkeys’ Dublin show due to illness

arctic monkeys tour cancelled

Arctic Monkeys have cancelled their Tuesday night concert in Dublin after frontman Alex Turner was diagnosed with acute laryngitis.

The band’s show at Marlay Park is the penultimate on their UK and Ireland tour that saw them play three nights at London’s Emirates Stadium last week.

Fans were treated to a guest performance from Miles Kane at the final date and wouldn’t have guessed there was anything wrong from hearing the 21-song set.

The news comes as Arctic Monkeys prepare to headline Glastonbury Festival on Friday, before they finish the UK with a date at Glasgow’s Bellahouston Park on June 25.

A statement on Twitter read: “Alex is suffering from acute laryngitis, and following medical advice has been ordered to rest.

“Alex and the band apologise for the huge disappointment this will inevitably cause to all their Irish fans.”

All Dublin ticket holders will be refunded. It has not been announced if the band will reschedule as part of their world tour supporting seventh album The Car.

What is acute laryngitis?

Laryngitis, according to the NHS , is when the voice box or vocal cords in the throat become irritated or swollen.

“It comes on suddenly and gets worse during the first three days,” guidance states.

Symptoms include a hoarse voice or losing your voice, a cough that does not go away, always needing to clear your throat, and a sore throat.

In children, it can also present as a high temperature, loss of appetite, and difficulty breathing.

Is laryngitis contagious?

Some types of the illness can be more infectious than others. Viral laryngitis is brought on by a virus, such as the common cold, and is the least infectious of the three types.

Bacterial laryngitis is also contagious and caused by an overgrowth of infectious bacteria, while fungal laryngitis is also transferable.

However, laryngitis can be caused by voice strain, smoking, acid reflux, and allergies.

How long does laryngitis last?

According to the National Institutes of Health, the first three to seven days are the worst.

Assuming Turner was diagnosed on Monday, fans can have their fingers crossed that the worst stage of the illness will have passed by Friday, when the Monkeys are due to headline the Pyramid Stage.

It usually passes after two weeks but, if it lasts for longer than three weeks, it can be called chronic laryngitis.

How to recover from laryngitis

Talking minimally and quietly is recommended, as is drinking a lot and gargling warm, salty water. Smoking, alcohol, and caffeine are not recommended. Laryngitis usually goes away by itself.

PLEASE NOTE: Arctic Monkeys have cancelled their sold out concert at Marlay Park in Dublin on Tuesday. You can find all the latest details here .

Alex Turner and his band of merry men will soon return to Dublin for the penultimate concert of their biggest Ireland and UK tour to date. In their first Irish gig since releasing their seventh studio album, Arctic Monkeys are set to kick off a summer series of concerts in Marlay Park, where a quarter of a million people will see performances this summer. Like any summer gig of this magnitude, it’s a hefty logistical undertaking, so what can we expect from the concert? And what will the band play for all the fluorescent adolescents screaming in the crowd?

When do they play?

The band will play to a crowd of 40,000 people at Marlay Park in south Dublin on Tuesday, June 20th.

What time should I arrive?

Gates open at 4pm and the show starts at 5pm. Amid increased traffic and security measures, fans have been advised to be at the venue in sufficient time. No overnight or early queuing is permitted.

Who are the support acts?

Swedish garage rock band The Hives are set to support on the night, as well as alternative rock band The Mysterines from Liverpool.

How do I get there – and home again?

Concert-goers have been asked to allow at least an extra two hours travel time to and from the venue. Organisers have said delays are “inevitable” and fans are encouraged to use the special event transport outlined below.

By Bus: Buses will transport fans to the ground of Marlay Park. For information on where and when to get a bus, visit evntz.ie . Marathon are operating a bus service from Custom House Quay in the city centre direct to the concert grounds. Tickets can be purchased here .

By Luas: Take the Luas green line from the city centre to Dundrum or Balally, both of which are a 35-minute walk to Marlay Park. A shuttle bus from Dundrum Luas station to Marlay Park will run every 30 minutes from 2pm, and tickets can be purchased from Marathon here . A joint ticket for Dundrum Town Centre parking and the shuttle bus can be purchased from Marathon here .

By Car: Car parking at Marlay Park is extremely limited and must be pre-booked for €25 per car. At the time of writing, it is sold out . The car park entrance is located on College Road and is accessed via Whitechurch Road. Only those who have pre-booked can park here. The organisers recommend the SuperValu car park on Balinteer Avenue as a suitable spot for drop off and collection by car. There will be road closures surrounding Marlay Park on the day.

By Taxi: Following the concert, a passenger pick-up point will be facilitated on the Brehon Field Road, however, the organisers have said they cannot guarantee taxis will be available.

Accessible parking must be booked in advance. You can contact [email protected] to register.

What will they play?

At a concert last Wednesday in Southampton, the band rocked up at about 8:50pm after doors opened at 5pm, and played for over an hour and a half. So you can expect the Dublin gig to look at little like this:

  • Snap Out of It
  • Crying Lightning
  • Teddy Picker
  • The View from the Afternoon
  • Cornerstone
  • Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High?
  • Four Out of Five
  • Pretty Visitors
  • Fluorescent Adolescent
  • Suck It and See
  • Perfect Sense
  • Do I Wanna Know?
  • There’d Better Be a Mirrorball
  • I Wanna Be Yours
  • I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor

Are there any tickets left?

This is a sold out show. However, keep an eye out for resale tickets at ticketmaster.ie . Buy tickets from accredited sources only. Melvin Benn, managing director of Festival Republic, last month advised fans to download their tickets to their phones before getting to the park as there is no guarantee of internet connection at the gates of Marlay Park.

What’s the story with security?

Under-16s must be accompanied by an adult; bring your passport, Garda age card or driving licence as evidence of your date of birth. Allow time for security checks on the way in. Bags larger than A4 size will not be permitted and all bags may be searched, and this can be time-consuming, so consider going bagless for easier entry. There will be no cloakroom or storage facilities. No umbrellas, alcohol, garden furniture, selfie sticks, flares, glasses or cans, among other items, will be allowed into the event. There are no re-admissions to the concert, so once you leave there’s no getting back in.

Supt Tomás Gormley of Tallaght Garda station told a pre-concert press conference last month: “There will be a big policing operation in place which will impact our policing commitments around the rest of the district,” adding his “number one priority” was keeping event-goers and the surrounding community safe.

Can I take photographs at the concert?

Yes, but only with a smartphone or small camera. Professional cameras with a detachable lens and any other recording equipment are banned.

What’s the weather forecast?

Met Éireann is forecasting scattered clouds, showers and temperatures of up to 19 degrees. A light rain jacket wouldn’t go amiss.

The news was announced earlier today (June 19) on the band’s Instagram page. According to the update, frontman Alex Turner has been suffering from an acute case of laryngitis and instructed to rest.

The upcoming gig was scheduled to take place tomorrow (June 20) at Marley Park in Dublin, and would have been the latest date as part of the band’s ongoing UK stadium tour.

According to the update, the newly-cancelled show will not be rescheduled and ticket holders will be issued refunds over the next few days. The show marked the Sheffield rocker’s only scheduled performance in Ireland.

“We are extremely sorry to announce the cancellation of Arctic Monkeys’ show at Marley Park in Dublin Tomorrow,” the update began. “Alex is suffering from acute laryngitis, and following medical advice, has been ordered to rest.”

The announcement comes just days ahead of the indie veterans’ scheduled performance at this year’s Glastonbury , which they are set to headline on Friday (June 23). At the time of writing, the set at Worthy Farm is still set to go ahead as planned, and will be preceded by sets from both Royal Blood and mystery band The Churnups .

Alex Turner and co. are also still scheduled to play their upcoming set in Glasgow two days later, with a gig planned at Bellahouston Park on Sunday (June 25). The show will be the final stop of the ongoing UK tour.

Over the weekend, the band performed three back-to-back shows in London. Kicking off on Friday (June 16), the residency took place at Emirates Stadium in the capital and concluded with a performance last night.

At last night’s show, the members performed numerous fan favourites including ‘Do I Wanna Know’, ‘Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High?’ and ‘Fluorescent Adolescent’. However, the main highlight of the set arrived later, when the band were joined onstage by Miles Kane for a rendition of ‘505’ .

Previous stops on the tour included sets in Bristol , Coventry, Manchester, Norwich and Swansea — as well as two of their mammoth homecoming shows at Hillsborough Park . It also featured support slots from Swedish indie rockers The Hives , and Liverpool-based alt-rock band, The Mysterines .

This is a developing story, and more details are set to be announced shortly.

Arctic Monkeys cancel gig days before headlining Glastonbury due to Alex Turner illness

Arctic Monkeys cancel gig days before headlining Glastonbury due to Alex Turner illness

The band made the announcement on social media.

Chloe Rowland

The Arctic Monkeys have been forced to cancel their gig in Dublin just days before they're set to take to the stage at Glastonbury.

The rock band were due to perform tomorrow at Marley Park in Dublin, marking their latest stop off on their UK and Ireland tour before they take to the big stage at Glasto .

Sadly, though, the band have been forced to cancel the gig after lead singer Alex Turner was ordered to rest after coming down with laryngitis, an illness where your voice box or vocal cords in the throat become irritated or swollen.

It'll come as a massive blow to fans, especially since the gig was their only planned stop off in Ireland, but the band has since offered up their apologies following the news.

"We are extremely sorry to announce the cancellation of Arctic Monkeys ’ show at Marlay Park in Dublin tomorrow," the band wrote on social media.

"Alex is suffering from acute laryngitis and following medical advice, has been ordered to rest.

The band announced the news today.

"Alex and the band apologise for the huge disappointment this will inevitably cause to all their Irish fans.

"Full refunds will be credited back to the ticket purchaser’s account."

While it's not the news fans want to hear, get well messages came swarming in following the announcement.

"get well soon alex, we love you," wrote one fan.

"Absolutely gutted, really hope Alex gets better soon and that all is good for Glastonbury. Please come back to Dublin soon," said another.

Meanwhile, a third put: "Get well soon my boi!!!"

Others, however, had Glasto on their minds as the band's announcement prompted fears they would cancel their headline set at the festival.

The band are headlining Glastonbury 2023.

"How long do you need to recover from laryngitis? Asking for a headliner," wrote one concerned fan.

Don't jinx it!

To be fair, it's highly likely that the cancellation is a way for Turner to rest his voice ready for when they take to the Pyramid Stage at Glasto on Friday (June 23), so hopefully there's nothing to worry about and he'll be absolutely fine once rested up a bit.

The 'Mardy Bum' hitmakers are set to be joined by the likes of Sir Elton John, Lizzo, Lana Del Rey, Lewis Capaldi and Guns N’ Roses, with their appearance marking their third time headlining the iconic festival.

You can catch their performance from 10.15pm to 11.45pm on BBC.

Fans who were hoping to see Arctic Monkeys in Dublin are fuming that the band haven’t rescheduled their cancelled concert.

The Sheffield group, fronted by Alex Turner, axed their upcoming performance in the Irish capital on Monday just one day before they were due to play, revealing that ticketholders would be refunded.

Breaking the news on social media , the group explained that Alex has come down with laryngitis, which is inflammation of the larynx, and has been ordered to rest ahead of their upcoming Glastonbury set.

‘We are extremely sorry to announce the cancellation of Arctic Monkeys’ show at Marlay Park in Dublin tomorrow,’ they said in a statement.

‘Alex is suffering from acute laryngitis and following medical advice, has been ordered to rest.

‘Alex and the band apologise for the huge disappointment this will inevitably cause to all their Irish fans.’

‘Full refunds will be credited back to the ticket purchaser’s account,’ they concluded.

But fans are furious that Arctic Monkeys didn’t reschedule the cancelled show, which was set to take place at Marley Park in Dublin.

Arctic Monkeys better reschedule Dublin, acc going to cry cause they’ve cancelled 😭😭 — Laura Kelly (@lauraekelly97) June 19, 2023

Why can’t you just reschedule it? There’s loads of venues in Dublin. Gutted 😭 — Roisin (@Roisin20467689) June 19, 2023
Surely reschedule to a later date, don’t do us dirty — John (@MoranJohn_) June 19, 2023
the fact that arctic monkeys didn’t even say anything about rescheduling their dublin show they were just like refunds will be issued like are u having me on 😀 so when’s the next time i’m gonna get a chance to see them then? — emily (@sixsirkos) June 19, 2023
Arctic Monkeys could have at least rescheduled the Dublin concert. Poor form cancelling and just offering refunds. — Gerry McK (@GMcK2012) June 19, 2023
I don’t want a refund for Arctic Monkeys 😭😭😭 @TicketmasterIre make them put on another show pls pic.twitter.com/5G6vTiJxmB — 🦆 (@katesm8z) June 19, 2023
I like Arctic Monkeys and I’m sure it’s serious but not sure if it’s just me but seems to be an increasing amount of acts who will cancel shows at the drop of a hat. “We’ll refund your ticket but you’re fucked on your hotel and train/flight” https://t.co/357bSfe0UP — Paul Duckett (@PaulDuckett) June 19, 2023

Venting their frustrations on social media, one slammed: ‘The fact that arctic monkeys didn’t even say anything about rescheduling their Dublin show they were just like refunds will be issued like are u having me on 😀 so when’s the next time I’m gonna get a chance to see them then?’

‘Surely Arctic Monkeys can just reschedule like I don’t want the refund, I want a concert????’ another added.

A third demanded: ‘Why didn’t they mention a rescheduled date?? 😭😭😭 it was so hard to get those tickets.’

‘Surely reschedule to a later date, don’t do us dirty,’ a fourth continued.

The cancellation is a huge blow to Irish fans, as the show marked Arctic Monkeys’ only scheduled show in Ireland.

Alex Turner

The band is due to headline Glastonbury Festival in Worthy Farm, Somerset, on Friday, however, there is now a question mark over whether their set will go ahead.

Providing everything runs smoothly and Alex recovers, they will take to the iconic Pyramid Stage following performances from Royal Blood, The ChurnUps, Texas, Stefflon Don, Maisie Peters, and The Master Musicians of Joujouka.
